Welcome
to the 2014 Summer Edition of My Say
Cornwall Care is on track to have its best year ever. We have the best trained carers and nurses in the County if not the Country, so that is something to be proud of and shout about. We have some exciting new services and changes taking place in Cornwall Care in 2014, one of which is our new website that was launched in the spring – if you haven’t seen it yet go to www.cornwallcare.com and let us know what you think. One of our biggest challenges for this year will be to provide the exceptional residential care we are well-known for, whilst keeping up with the growing demand for care of individuals in their own home. We are still running the ‘Recommend a Friend to Cornwall Care’ scheme where you can earn up to £300 for each caring person you introduce to work for the organisation, a great way to earn some extra money!
In the spring, Cornwall Care won the Best Employer Award at the National Skills for Care Accolades 2014. This is a fantastic achievement and well deserved, reinforcing how committed we are to providing quality training and development to all who work at Cornwall Care. Thank you all for your hard work over the last year and thank you for your constant, caring commitment to all our residents and clients of Cornwall Care. Anticipating a happy, warm and dry summer for us all,
Douglas Webb CEO.

Trengrouse - Helston WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING… • Flora Day dancers came to Trengrouse in May to Dance their way through all the lounges. In the Press…
Trevern made the press when Nikita Hunter from Falmouth put her artistic skills to use by transforming the glass walkway into an underwater scene; complete with crabs, fish and a mermaid. Trevern wanted some artwork to decorate the walls and Anne Morrison (member of our staff) recommended her granddaughter for the task. During the school holidays Nikita hopes to paint is some colourful beach scenes on canvasses for the walls in Trevern. It’s all about bringing the outside in and to try to brighten up the communal areas of the home to give everything a lift and make people smile.

Admiral Nurse Team ABOUT US…
Admiral Nurses specialise solely in dementia care. They provide families and carers with emotional support and the tools and skills they need to understand and take care of someone suffering with dementia. We work in partnership with Dementia UK to help families through their the dementia journey. As well as practical and psychological support, our Admiral Nurses can offer advice on tough decisions, such as treatments and residential care. They also liaise with other healthcare professionals on behalf of the family, helping them understand the different areas of the health and social care system involved with their loved one’s condition. Admiral Nurses provide a free service which is initially offered on a short-term basis, but family carers are easily able to access support as they need it. We usually work with people caring for dementia sufferers in their home, but if your loved one is in a residential home we can still offer assistance and advice if you need it.

Cornwall Care Celebrates
National Nurses’ Day Cornwall Care celebrated national Nurses’ Day on Monday 12th May with a specially made ‘Thank you’ card designed by a resident from Trewartha. Over 1000 cards went out to staff who make a fantastic contribution to quality nursing and health care for older people in the county. The annual awareness event coincided with the birthday of Florence Nightingale who developed nursing practice standards which have stood the test of time and underpin nursing principles today.
Bridget Varney, Deputy Director of Operations at Cornwall Care said: “We recognise that our staff are our greatest asset. National Nurses’ Day is an opportunity for us to pause and reflect on the hard work, dedication, compassion and skills of our nurses and the Health Care Assistants.”

Cornwall Care know that it takes a lot of people on the frontline and behind the scenes to provide high quality care and we wanted to acknowledge their wonderful contribution too. So in addition to the nurses and HCAs, thank you cards were also given to our housekeepers, home managers and administrators, domiciliary support staff, our inhouse training service and the Admiral Nurses team. A big ‘Thank You’ to all our caring employees for your hard work and commitment.
Wheelchairs
on Ice!
Twelve of our residents and their carers from Trengrouse, Woodlands and St Breock braved the weather to take part in wheelchair ice-skating at the Eden Project ice rink on 12th February. Inspired by Angie Bray, administrator at Trengrouse, the day was a huge success and both residents and their carers had a wonderful and memorable experience. Most of the residents that took part were in their seventies, eighties and nineties proving that there is no age limit to trying new experiences. A thank you note: “On behalf of the family and myself, may I thank you and your staff for arranging, and taking PB and some of your relatives to Eden last week. It sounds as if it was a resounding success, and a most enjoyable outing for all, in spite of the weather conditions. It was thoughtful and kind of you all to do this, and hopefully most beneficial as well. I understand that PB was laughing most of the time. All this goes to reinforce in my opinion that you have a well-run, considerate, and most helpful team, for which I wish you all well and give my thanks.” - From a loving husband and Trengrouse resident.
Sandra Manley pushin g her mum Sylvia Lucas
A big Thank You to those who took part especially; our residents, the Eden Project , Angie, Julie Jackson, and of course to our amazing hardworking ice-skating carers and support staff - some of which had never skated before! If you would like to see more pictures of the Ice-skating day trip… we have lots, courtesy of Trengrouse! If you think of a fun experience that you think our residents might enjoy to ‘make their day’ – voice your ideas and get in touch. Email- marketing@cornwallcare.org
