Introduction All of us at 516 ARTS and the University of New Mexico Art Museum are delighted to work together to showcase contemporary photography from the region, the country and the world this summer. We have teamed up to launch PhotoSummer, a collaborative initiative that strives to represent and actively promote historical and contemporary photography in New Mexico.

PhotoSummer 2015 features exhibitions and public programs in both Albuquerque and Santa Fe, focusing on contemporary photography through exhibitions, talks, workshops and more. For future PhotoSummer initiatives, UNM Art Museum will partner with a variety of organizations in Albuquerque, Santa Fe and throughout the state in order to highlight the very best of photographic practice and scholarship.

The first PhotoSummer collaboration has emerged around the exhibition Fraction of a Second, which is a multi-site exhibition at both 516 ARTS and UNM Art Museum, guest curated by Fraction Magazine co-founder David Bram. As an online venue, Fraction Magazine has been able to showcase artists from around the globe. The exhibition Fraction of a Second focuses on the in-person experience of photography, serving as a point of departure for dialogue about the nature of contemporary photography in the digital age. It is PhotoSummer’s inaugural exhibition and has spurred alliances with partners. We are excited to partner with CENTER to highlight their international photography festival Review Santa Fe, now entering its 15th year in celebrating the photographic vanguard, as well as Richard Levy Gallery, SCA Contemporary and Central Features in Albuquerque and Center for Contemporary Arts and Santa Fe University of Art & Design in Santa Fe, all of which are hosting ancillary exhibitions for PhotoSummer 2015.

516 ARTS and UNM Art Museum have a long history of collaboration. This partnership, which helps to connect the community and the university with the rest of the world, has brought international artists and programming to our city, state and region for LAND/ART, ISEA2012 and most recently Digital Latin America. Our two institutions continue to foster a rigorous and engaging dialogue about contemporary art along Albuquerque’s cultural corridor of Central Avenue and New Mexico’s cultural corridor through collaborations with organizations in Santa Fe and Taos.

For 516 ARTS, PhotoSummer has generated an expanded program of workshops, offering more ways for artists and audiences to engage through hands-on and cross-media activities. For the UNM Art Museum, this collaboration extends educational programming and community outreach, bringing life and energy to the museum and university campus during the summer months. And for all of us involved, PhotoSummer 2015 is carrying on some of the collaborative momentum created by On the Map: Unfolding Albuquerque Art + Design.

We hope to see you at 516 ARTS and UNM Art Museum for the opening weekend June 5 & 6, in Santa Fe during Review Santa Fe June 11-14, and at partnering venues in both cities for events described in the following pages. Happy PhotoSummer!

Albuquerque’s Fraction Magazine Takes Center Stage Curated by David Bram, editor and publisher of the online Fraction Magazine (www.fractionmagazine.com), this multi-site exhibition brings together 45 diverse contemporary photographers, both established and emerging. The exhibition includes 35 artists from across the United States featured at 516 ARTS and 10 international artists featured at UNM Art Museum (from China, France, Japan, Ireland, Italy, The Netherlands, Norway and the UK). Fraction of a Second is the inaugural exhibition of PhotoSummer.

Fraction Magazine began as a way to broaden exposure for under-recognized work.

Since it was launched seven years ago, it has featured portfolios of more than 300 photographers worldwide. The diverse nationalities and backgrounds of the artists add to the rich content offered to viewers each month. Even now with its inclusion of international artists, Fraction Magazine maintains its strong connections to New Mexico.

A Convergence of Photography in Santa Fe CENTER will hold the 15th annual Review Santa Fe Photo Festival June 11-14, 2015 in Santa Fe, NM. Kicking off the summer arts season in a city rich with photographic history, Review Santa Fe offers photographers, photo enthusiasts, collectors, and the public a spectacular showcase of outstanding photographic talent from around the globe.

More than 40 leading photo professionals will serve as reviewers, seeking out new talent, including professionals from The New Yorker, MSNBC, TIME Magazine, The Museum of Contemporary Photography, and The Library of Congress.

An array of other public programs and exhibitions will be offered, beginning with a keynote presentation by internationally celebrated writer Lucy Lippard, ongoing artist presentations, and as well as an evening of portfolio viewing of the work of 100 vetted photographic fine art and documentary projects. These public programs offer the rare opportunity to browse portfolios and speak face-to-face with the photographic vanguard from around the globe.

Since 1966, she has published 23 books on contemporary art and cultural studies, including Mixed Blessings: New Art in a Multicultural America (1990), The Lure of the Local: Senses of Place in a Multicentered Society (1997), Down Country: The Tano of the Galisteo Basin 1250-1782 (2010), and, most recently, Undermining: A Wild Ride through Land Use, Politics, and Art in the Changing West (2014). She has been co-founder of various artists’ groups including Printed Matter, Political Art Documentation/ Distribution (PAD/D), Artists Call Against U.S. Intervention in Central America, and the guerrilla performance groups Outside Agitators and Damage Control. She has received grants from the Guggenheim Foundation, the Lannan Foundation, and Creative Capital, various awards, and nine honorary doctorates in fine arts. She has curated some 50 shows, and once made feminist comics starring Polly Tickle. For 18 years she has edited El Puente, the monthly community newsletter for Galisteo, New Mexico, where she has lived for 23 years and is active in community planning and other local issues.

Anne Wilkes Tucker In 2001, TIME magazine honored Tucker as “America’s Best Curator.” After working in various museums and universities, she joined The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston in 1976, and is currently the Gus and Lyndall Wortham Curator. She founded the museum’s Photography Department, which now has a collection of over 28,000 photographs. She has curated over forty exhibitions, most recently including the exhibition WAR/PHOTOGRAPHY and its award-winning catalogue. She has contributed essays to many other monographs and catalogues, and published numerous articles on photography and its practitioners. She has been awarded fellowships by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), the Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, The Getty Center, the Harry Ransom Center, and the Dora Maar House.

Surveillance as Art Stealth Investigations is an exhibition of three artists’ work who use different forms of surveillance in their art practices. Each of the artists employ video, photography, and performance to engage issues of privacy, intimacy and communication in a number of ways.

Jessamyn Lovell uses surveillance techniques in both No Trespassing and Dear Erin Hart, to find, follow and photograph her subjects learning about her own identity throughout the process. Lovell surreptitiously photographed her estranged father from 2007-2010 before his passing. Dear Erin Hart, documents the artist’s pursuit of the San Francisco woman who stole her identity in 2011.

Trish Stone’s Lighter Than Air was inspired equally by DIY hobbyists sending cameras into space and by the proliferation of surveillance drones patrolling U.S. Borders. The project examines the quiet discomfort of drones through community engagement.

Three videos document an artist-led activity featuring the launch of a balloon drone (a weather balloon fitted with a video camera) that engages participation on several levels, including performance for the camera, steering the camera with attached strings, and using hand-­held mirrors to communicate with the aerial surveillance device.

Lee Montgomery uses drones to make portraits of willing subjects in their personal spaces and work environments in an effort to examine the quiet discomfort drones instill. Montgomery is presenting art works made by unmanned autonomous vehicles using various media.

Images of the In Between Driven Snow is a series of photographs that focuses on the chunks of snow and ice that accumulate under cars during the Minnesota winter. A byproduct of weather and urban transit, these solid formations are a kind of temporary automatic sculpture somewhere between natural and human made.

Born and based in Albuquerque, Andy Mattern is a contemporary photographer who uses everyday objects as a source of inspiration. His images focus on residual forms found in urban landscapes and consumer products, especially those which emerge as byproducts of other systems or activities without design or intentionality. Andy holds a BFA in Studio Art from the University of New Mexico and an MFA in Photography from the University of Minnesota.

Also on view: We Care A Lot, a selection of 100 small sculptures by Seattle-based artist Debra Baxter, made of found, discarded, and fabricated materials collected from the rural and urban environment.

Human Rights Conflicts and the Passage of Time

Artists

Exposure is an exhibition of photographs by Gordon Parks and Rania Matar. Each photographer presents a deeply humanitarian perspective to human rights conflicts both past and present. In the wake of the 1955 bus boycott in Montgomery, Alabama, Life Magazine asked Gordon Parks to go and document the racial tensions embedded there. While on assignment, Parks developed a series of images that documented the daily lives of the African American community. This body of work entitled Segregation Series was discovered in his personal archives and posthumously released in full color, something rarely seen in photographs from that era. Today, Rania Matar photographs Syrian refugee children living in her hometown of Beirut. In her series, Invisible Children, she captures portraits of these children who often go unseen while begging for work to help their displaced families. Matar puts a face to this present humanitarian crisis by capturing each child and their individual identities.

In the Project Room, the Richard Levy Gallery presents groupings of photographs

by Sandi Haber Fifield from her series After the Threshold. Although these images are created over time, Fifield connects seemingly disparate moments together into arrangements of three or four photographs. These groupings show how small glimpses of life experiences can align and create compositional harmonies.

Artist Talk: Rita Koehler

Rita Koehler is a guest artist-inresidence for PhotoSummer as part of 516 ARTS’ partnership with the national NPN/Visual Artists Network. The public is invited to her artist talk about her two latest bodies of work, Rite of Ordinary: Interior Indiana featured in Fraction Magazine, and her new work in progress, Xenia, focusing on women religious in the Catholic Church and their role in transforming the hierarchical Church. She asks, “Whom does representation address and whom does it exclude? What is a portrait? And how can I keep from being restricted in my understanding of my subjects?”

A selection of her portraits from Xenia are featured in Fraction of a Second at 516 ARTS.

KEYNOTE Panel Digital Culture and the Photographic Condition The digital age – with its speed, high-saturation, and un-ending accessibility – has shifted the condition of the photographic medium. A paradox exists wherein the artist and viewer have access to a vast, global collection of photography and related scholarship, yet are engaging work at a distance without the personal connection of a physical encounter with the art object. Curator and co-founder of Fraction Magazine, David Bram, will lead a conversation illuminating the various ways that photographers negotiate these issues and continue to create powerful work in an era of digitization.

Mary Anne Redding, curator at the Turchin Center for Visual Arts at Appalachian State University (Boone, NC), has more than 30 years experience working as a curator, archivist, librarian, educator and arts administrator. She has written and published numerous essays on photography and contemporary art. Most recently she was the Curator of the Marion Center for Photographic Arts and the Chair of the Photography Department at Santa Fe University of Art & Design.

Aziza Murray, who is attending graduate school in the UNM College of Fine Arts, is primarily a photographer, working with themes of home, loss, displacement and beauty. She has previously traveled and photographed in India and Ireland, and used photography as a medium to discuss racial prejudice and identification. Her MFA thesis show, Tinstagrams, was a collection of 95 tintyped, Instagram photographs.

Daniel W. Coburn is a photographer and professor whose work and research investigates the family photo album employed as one component of a visual infrastructure that supports the flawed ideology of the American Dream. His work has been published widely, most recently appearing in the International New York Times. He received his MFA with distinction from UNM in 2013, and is currently an Assistant Professor of Photo Media at the University of Kansas.

Maggie Blanchard is Director of Twin Palms Publishers, which has published exceptional photography and art books with an emphasis on monographs for over 30 years. Each beautifully made book honors the original work while creating an object that has a life of its own. Formerly, Maggie was Co-Director of CENTER. Her experience there gave her the opportunity to view thousands of portfolios and gain familiarity with the network of industry professionals.

David Bram, panel moderator, is the co-founder of Fraction Magazine and guest curator of the exhibition Fraction of a Second. He has reviewed portfolios at over 20 national events including PhotoLucida, Fotofest, PhotoNOLA, Review LA and Review Santa Fe; and has been a juror for Critical Mass for the past four years. He has been a reviewer at Fotofest Moscow and a curator at the Lishui Photography Festival in China, and is the recipient of the Griffin Museum of Photography’s Rising Star Award.

workshopS Cyanotype Printing and Toning in the Digital Age

Using Photography in Mixed Media: Weekend Workshop with Holly Roberts

During this two-day immersion workshop, participants will learn the art of cyanotype printing, a technique that rivals the tonal range and seductive quality of platinum prints. By carefully utilizing the modern cyanotype process and finetuning a set of digital negatives, workshop participants will learn to make pristine cyanotype prints. This 19th century process is as versatile and economical as it is beautiful.

Daniel Coburn, master of alternative process printing and beloved teacher, will instruct students on how to tone cyanotype prints with a variety of rich colors and hues. This process is relatively non-toxic, and printing techniques can be carried out in normal ambient light, which makes this printing technique ideal for a home workshop or studio.

Photographers and artists of all skill levels can learn and enjoy this printing process, and experimentation is highly encouraged! The only prerequisite is a basic knowledge of Photoshop.

Holly Roberts’ first national exposure came in 1989 with the publication of the monograph, Holly Roberts, published by the Friends of Photography. Although her work is based on the photograph, it is the inclusion of paint that continues to make it so distinctive.

As David Featherstone says in his introduction, “While it is Roberts’ evolving interaction with the photograph that takes her to her finished work, it is the existence of the underlying photographic image—even when it is obscured by paint—that gives the work its powerful qualities and sets up the emotional challenge for the viewer.” Her work has continued to evolve, but she has reversed her original process of heavily overpainting the black and white silver print. She now works on the painted surface, developing a narrative scene with collaged photographic elements. 516 ARTS presents a special intensive weekend workshop for PhotoSummer with guest artist Holly Roberts, combining photography and photo-based processes with different materials to build unique mixed media works. Students will work with transfers, water-based paints and adhesives, laser and ink jet prints, and any found or made material that they would like to incorporate into their collages.

They will prepare paintings as backgrounds to adhere photographs, drawings, paintings and just about any collage material they can come up with. Techniques taught will include polymer transfers, the use of water based paints, correct gluing techniques, substrates, and composing and building an image.

516 ARTS welcomes writer Michael Backus to teach a fourweek summer writing workshop in the gallery. It will cover some of the basic conventions of creative writing, with a focus on the idea of using photographs as a way to inspire writing (both fiction and creative non-fiction). The workshop will explore various approaches via in-class and take home exercises, including creating a story from a photograph in the exhibition Fraction of Second at 516 ARTS, from a photo the student takes, and from old photos that have personal meaning. The goal will be to create a functional short piece by the end of the class. There will be a voluntary reading of work at 516 ARTS to be scheduled after the class is over.

Fee: $100, space is limited, pre-registration required Register: 505-242-1445, teresa@516arts.org Michael Backus has had a number of pieces, fiction and non-fiction, published in recent years, including Hoosier Hysteria in Prime Number magazine, My Bad in One Story, Santa Fe Cab in Exquisite Corpse, along with work in Hanging Loose, The High Hat, The Writer, The Portland Review, The Sycamore Review and Storyhead magazine.

Xynobooks published his novel Double in early 2012 and he is currently shopping a book-length memoir about New York City in the early 1980s working in the meatpacking district tossing meat. He has taught over 70 creative writing classes in the past eight years at Marymount Manhattan College in New York City, Gotham Writer’s Workshop, and Zoetrope magazine. He has also taught film production and film history classes at Columbia College in Chicago, and composition, literature and film theory classes at Marymount.

Come and explore one of the oldest photographic processes with the entire family! The Cyanotype (aka blue print) is one of photography’s oldest printing methods and is named for its rich blue-green hue, cyan. Cyanotypes are made by placing objects or negatives directly onto lightsensitive paper and exposing the paper to sunlight. The resulting image is unique and shows white shapes against a blue background. In this class students will create a series of Cyanotype images. All materials will be provided. However, participants in this class are encouraged to bring in any personal objects that they would like to use in making their Cyanotypes (things like beads, jewelry, action figures, toy cars, etc.). Also, keep in mind that instead of printing on paper, materials such as fabric, muslin, or cotton (things like tote bags) can also be used – so bring those too if you want to experiment.
