Bucket-list travel destination: Dubai. The architecture is above and beyond; it’s a future city in present time. Maximalist or minimalist: Minimalist. My mind starts to wander too much when things go the other direction. Favorite space in your home: My office. It’s where I get lost in my music while editing photos. Make It Personal

his past September, I had the pleasure of (virtually) attending Business Of Home’s third annual Future Of Home conference, where home-industry professionals geeked out on topics ranging from the rise of coliving to digital currency’s impacts on the art world (please don’t quiz me on the latter). By the end of the two-day summit, I had a page of quotes from the star-studded lineup of panelists, including Martha Stewart, Jonathan Adler, and Christian Siriano, scribbled in my notebook. During a discussion about the future of media, Mélanie Berliet, general manager of the Spruce lifestyle website, spoke about how social and digital media platforms have led to the speedy turnover of design trends. “Information spreads so widely and quickly that it’s almost as if [trends] don’t exist,” she said. “I think that’s a beautiful thing because ultimately what will matter is people

figuring out what their personal style is.” I couldn’t agree more. Sure, fleeting trends are fun to admire and experiment with, but meaningful living spaces that reflect one’s lifestyle and personal history are the backbone of great design. In this issue, you’ll explore residential spaces with plenty of personal panache, including a moody den inspired by its owner’s English upbringing (“Top Denver Design 2021–22,” page 45), an interior designer’s modern dwelling furnished with vintage finds she revived herself (“Open House,” page 52), and a local fashion stylist’s beloved credenza with a familial backstory (“I Love My…,” page 80). As you flip through the following pages, I hope you’ll take note of the artworks, furnishings, and space-planning techniques that pique your interest, as well as those that don’t. This inspiration could inch you closer to finding your own personal style— a beautiful thing indeed.

Maximalist or minimalist: Clutter and I don’t get along (unless it’s a packed bookshelf). Favorite space in your home: My bedroom. Its mix of grays, blues, and lighter woods always relaxes me. Recent design find: My husband and I commissioned a painting from our friend Carly Jo Hougen. It fits perfectly in our home. Daliah wrote “Stay Stylish” (page 35)

Cheryl Meyers WRITER

Morning drink of choice: A double-shot latte with oat milk. Dream-home requirement: Six Adirondack chairs around a fire pit. Favorite paint color: Benjamin Moore’s White Dove. It’s a warm, creamy white—not too stark or harsh.

Solo Shows at Robischon Gallery

San Francisco Bay Area designers Kate McIntyre and Brad Huntzinger joined forces more than 20 years ago to create a line of furnishings called Oly Studio (named after McIntyre’s daughter, Olivia). Their combined talent has led to a wide-ranging collection of elegant-yet-approachable, nature-inspired furniture, lighting, and casegoods—including the Klemm cast-resin table lamps, Faline four-poster bed, and Ariel chandelier (all pictured above). Now, you can see (and feel) their pieces at RiNo’s Design Wright Studios, Oly Studio’s new flagship dealer in Colorado. olystudio.com; designwrightstudios.com

Art lovers will concur: Five art exhibitions are always better than one. Robischon Gallery, long celebrated for its robust roster of artists and its fascinating shows, presents five concurrent solo exhibitions—each exploring political and social themes via surrealist imagery. At the LoDo space, view contemporary works (including painting, sculpture, mixed media, and video installation) by Spain’s Paco Pomet, New Mexico’s Walter Robinson, Pennsylvania’s Tom Judd, and Colorado’s own Gary Emrich and Terry Maker. WHAT’S HOT IN DENVER DESIGN

Hot Seat

Designophiles have much to celebrate with the debut of the Denver Art Museum’s recently renovated Martin Building. More than 11,000 square feet of new and redesigned exhibition space accommodate the museum’s enviable collection of 19,000 architecture and design pieces (one of the largest such collections in the country), some of which are showcased in a rotating exhibition called By Design: Stories and Ideas Behind Objects. On display now: Denver furniture designer Laura Kishimoto’s Yumi chair, which was commissioned in 2018 by the museum’s curator of architecture and design, Darrin Alfred. “One of my favorite things about the chair is how bold and unapologetic it is,” Alfred says. “It’s meant to be looked at from all different angles.” (To peek inside the updated Martin Building, flip the page.) kishimotodesign.com —CHERYL MEYERS 5280 HOME

What you need to know about the Denver Art Museum’s newand-improved Martin Building, which reopened to the public this fall. by CHERYL MEYERS

2. The three-year, $175-million renovation celebrates and even augments Ponti’s vision. The design team began by rehabbing the tower’s exterior, replacing many of the damaged, original pyramid-shaped glass tiles (produced by Corning) with replicas made by German tile company Bendheim; these also cover the building’s new facades. The unconventionally shaped windows, some of which frame views of the mountains, were swapped out for more energy-efficient versions (the building is now LEED Silver–certified). And speaking of views, a rooftop terrace—part of Ponti’s original vision that wasn’t built until now— is a prime spot to take in the cityscape.

Top: The Sie Welcome Center’s elliptical event space overlooks downtown Denver. Middle, from left: An exterior view of the revived arts complex; the welcome center’s grand staircase; a fresh gallery space

Coinciding with the 2021 reopening of Denver’s Gio Ponti–designed Martin Building is the release of a new coffee-table book celebrating the starchitect’s work. Gio Ponti (Taschen, 2021) is available for $250 on Amazon.

3. The interior renovations make way for lots more art. More than 33,000 square feet of sleek gallery and education spaces have been carved out of the castle-like building’s core, with many former storage rooms repurposed to make way for the museum’s growing collection. “We didn’t have enough space to suit the scale of this collection [before],” Darrin Alfred, curator of architecture and design, says. “This is our opportunity to shine a light on the architecture and design collection in a way we haven’t been able to in the past.”

4. A welcome center ties it all together. Sandwiched between the linear Martin tower and the angular Hamilton Building, the new, rounded Sie Welcome Center “unites what otherwise may be experienced as disparate elements,” Fentress says. The structure’s curves are echoed inside, where the Grand Staircase—constructed as a monolithic terrazzo form—winds sinuously to connect three levels. The welcome center houses ticketing, an event space, and two new dining options—including the Boss Architecture–designed restaurant that’s helmed by chef Jennifer Jasinski and aptly named the Ponti.

1. The original structure is truly one of a kind. Designed in 1971 by the late modernist architect and furniture designer Gio Ponti and Denver– based James Sudler Associates, the sevenstory, glass-tiled edifice—formerly known as the North Building—was one of the first high-rise art museums upon its construction and is the only Ponti–designed building in North America to this day. (The Italian architect’s notable works also include Milan’s Pirelli Tower and the iconic Superleggera chair.) “He was a visionary and artist with incredible attention to detail,” says Curtis Fentress, principal of Fentress Architects, who worked with Boston-based architecture firm Machado Silvetti on the building’s most recent iteration. “So much of what Ponti is known for is represented in the tower: textured facades, geometric cutouts, and form following function.”

A Room With A Mood

A den swathed in sumptuous fabrics and soothing colors offers a quiet moment in a Wash Park penthouse that’s all about the views. by CHRISTINE DEORIO

24

5280 HOME

Can a person ever tire of a 20thfloor view that stretches from Longs Peak to Pikes Peak? Not likely. But, while remodeling their penthouse pied-à-terre, homeowners Garth Tait and Lael Klitsch realized that they would like a cozy contrast to their new living, dining, and cooking space that captures the Front Range panorama via a floor-to-ceiling window wall. “Most evenings, they retire to this den,” says interior designer Jodi Cook, who worked with KGA Studio Architects and builder Diamond Homes to transform the apartment’s former kitchen into the snug space. The jewel-box design began with a Schumacher fabric that caught Klitsch’s eye and now adorns a Lee Industries sofa. “The chenille-like weave almost looks like a patch-

work, which is inherently a provincial pattern,” Cook says, “but it has a sheen that feels soft and supple and upscale. It’s approachable yet luxurious at the same time.” The fabric’s shades of dusty silver, blue, and green inspired the moody blue-gray paint color that covers the newly paneled walls, custom builtins, and coffered tray ceiling. A wool-and-silk rug from ShaverRamsey echoes the palette, its abstract pattern creating a bridge between the formality of silver-leaf sconces from Visual Comfort and the organic texture of a Mongolian fur– covered chair. “We kept joking that this was like someone’s kooky Aunt Myrtle’s Upper East Side apartment,” Cook says of the eclectic mix. “So when we pondered what art to hang on

the wall, we thought, ‘A cougar is what she would have!’” Cook proposed a black-andwhite photograph from Natural Curiosities—“because keeping it monochromatic makes it feel that much more sophisticated,” she says. Aunt Myrtle has great taste. cookdesignhouse.com photograph by DAVID PATTERSON

Suchit Majmudar’s favorite way to tap into his creative side is by hosting loved ones for drinks and dinner at his Cory-Merrill home—which comes as no surprise given the Denverite’s résumé (he helms Sunday’s Spirits, an independent Japanese spirits company specializing in whisky and sake, and he serves on the board of trustees for the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver). “As much as I love art, my ability as a visual artist is nonexistent,” he says. “Where I thrive from a creative perspective is [preparing] food and drinks.” We asked Majmudar to share 10 design-savvy items for the happiest of at-home cocktail hours, though he admits that the secret ingredient isn’t something you can buy. “In Arabic, it’s called nafas, which loosely translates to ‘spirit’ or ‘breath,’” he says. “It’s the je ne sais quoi that makes a drink or meal something you couldn’t get anywhere else.” sundaysspirits.com 1. Sunday’s Whisky. “This is our company’s first product in the United States and our pride and joy. We partnered with 256-year-old Japanese distiller Sasanokawa Shuzo to make a whisky that’s fun and easy to drink.” 2. Bar cart. “A bar cart isn’t critical, but it sure makes at-home cocktail-making more convenient. I love the deep-green color of this option from Visibility, its clean design, and its versatility—it’s suitable as a bar cart or as a trolley for your office supplies or kids’ toys.”

Zester. “Little touches like citrus zest or dark-chocolate shavings can really elevate the flavor and presentation of a drink (or food). This citrus zester from Microplane will last a long time and is dishwasher-safe. You’ll wonder why you didn’t buy one a long time ago.”

3. Ice bucket. “Ice is a critical part of making the perfect drink, and a nice ice bucket is a practical investment. This black-and-gold one from Pottery Barn is sleek and modern, but will fit nicely into any aesthetic.”

8. Cocktail book. “It’s awesome that Death & Co’s second location after Manhattan is inside RiNo’s Ramble Hotel. Their book, Death & Co: Classic Modern Cocktails, is a great guide if you want to try your hand at making something complex or simply learn about the history of a classic drink.”

4. Carafe. “Having a couple of carafes of water available for happy-hour guests is always a good idea, especially if the vessels look as good as this version by Research & Design Lab. Your guests will be grateful for the hydration the next morning.”

9. Coasters. “I often use vintage coasters that I’ve picked up on trips abroad because they bring back great memories. But if you want to go the luxe route, anything by L’Objet is amazing, including these leopard-print, 24-karatgold-plated coasters.”

5. Cocktail napkins. “Atelier Saucier makes napkins from reclaimed fabric in classic materials and fun colors like navy chambray and blush linen.”

10. Bitters. “The quality of everything from your glassware to your whisky to your mixers makes a big difference in how a drink turns out. These bitters by the Japanese Bitters Co. won’t disappoint: unique flavors, thoughtfully made, and because you use very little at a time, they ought to last forever.”

OFFICE DESIGN

Wor orkin kin’’ It

Duet Design Group whipped up a whole-office transformation for clients who wanted their Denver workspace to feel as comfortable and chic as a beautifully styled home. Lucky for us, the project delivers abundant inspiration and ideas for any HQ—whether it’s at home or in an actual office building. (Remember those?) OFFICE DESIGN

1

TAKE INSPIRATION FROM RESIDENTIAL DESIGN. “We designed these clients’ primary residence, and they wanted their office to feel like a home away from home,” says Duet principal Miranda Cullen. “[They asked for] a space with different areas to work, eat, relax, and have large and small meetings—whatever allows [employees] to be most productive and supported.” The design team embraced a cozy, elevated aesthetic that meets those needs: office spaces flex for small gatherings, comfortable chairs sit beside pull-up laptop tables for on-the-fly brainstorming, sitting areas feel like mini living rooms, and gorgeous textiles and patterns abound.

2

GET CREATIVE WITH ART AND LIGHTING. “I almost had a heart attack when I saw this piece, I loved it so much,” Cullen says of Melanie Rothschild’s colorful 3D installation—one of many vibrant pieces that local art consultancy Nine Dot Arts curated for the office. One trick to take from this project: Display art at the end of a hallway or wherever your line of vision ends. You get the fun of looking at it as you cross a room or meander down a corridor. Lighting also makes a big impact. “You’ll never be sorry you invested in beautiful fixtures,” Cullen says. “They go a long way toward making the workday more enjoyable, both practically and aesthetically.” Throughout this office, Cullen specified sculptural fixtures that provide layers of illumination and visual interest— a welcome departure from the fluorescent light panels often found in office spaces.

Clockwise from top left: Designer Miranda Cullen tempered the 12-foot ceiling’s volume with a custom walnut wall installation in the reception area. In a transition space between two areas of the office, a colorful piece by Melanie Rothschild—featuring long strips of peeled paint—hangs above a pair of Oggetti consoles. A curvy Hive Modern chair, made from recycled cardboard, has a place of prominence: It’s visible at the end of a long hallway so passersby can admire its shape. The pendant is by the Future Perfect. Local furniture-maker Rooster Socks built the custom conference table, which is surrounded by chairs from Design Within Reach and paired with a colorful console from Blu Dot.

3

DESIGN WITH WELLNESS IN MIND. Throughout the office, the design team added spaces for employees to decompress or think quietly. “You can’t go, go, go all day without little mental breaks,” Cullen says. In one of the office’s private wellness rooms, a vinyl watercolor wallcovering from Phillip Jeffries— reminiscent of a lake or seaside scene—surrounds a leather chaise from Rifugio Modern. It’s worth noting: No matter where you’re punching the clock these days, space away from your desk (and in a place you find pleasing) is an investment in your mental health.

Clockwise from top right: A booth, lit by fixtures from Y Lighting, provides a casual spot for colleagues to chat or collaborate. Cullen’s team found the vintage cane chairs at 1stDibs and had them reupholstered in a vibrant green fabric to tie in with other nature-inspired elements in the office. A wellness room gives employees space to decompress or meditate.

EMBRACE NATURE. The clients wanted natural elements—unlike typical commercial spaces’ hard, beige furniture bathed in fluorescent light—and the design team took up that call enthusiastically. In the library, a palm-frond-print wallpaper from Kravet backs a custom bookshelf where employees can pick up new reads or share favorites with coworkers. Wall-mounted planters by Little Eden Plants in Arvada add live greenery to the dining room. And natural wood tones throughout the office create a soothing atmosphere. “Any time you can add wood to a space, even if it’s just a small element, you get more warmth, more richness,” Cullen says.

Clockwise from top right: The library’s 29-foot-wide back wall is home to this custom bookshelf, backed by a leafy Kravet wallpaper. Throughout the room, chairs from Industry West flank custom laptop tables by BuildLane. Denver furniture-maker Rooster Socks built the custom lounge chairs, upholstered in a vibrant Schumacher fabric, and the ottoman, in a solid fabric from Anzea. The accent table is from Mr. Brown London. A feathery chair by Kenneth Cobonpue stands playfully beside a Noir cabinet, custom-painted by Denver artist Mauri Powell. “Give yourself moments of surprise or just joy in your space, especially your workspace,” Cullen says. “You’ll never regret it.”

THE BOTTOM LINE

“These set-ups can absolutely be duplicated at home,” Cullen says. “Those days of sitting at a stationary desk 24-7 are gone. Think through function and ergonomics. Think about how you want your space to feel. Then build it, even a little at a time, until it serves you exactly the way you want.” duetdesigngroup.com

after a gut renovation of the 1902 structure. Morgan handled all of the design work and smartly preserved a number of architectural features, including the tin ceiling in the common area and the second-story maple floors (discovered beneath old carpet and linoleum). With help from a local artisan, the duo sourced period-appropriate glass to repair the fish-scale-paned windows above the front doors and had new door trim fabricated so everything would match the original, elaborate wood designs that frame the building’s front rooms. The 15 guest rooms look like bright jewel boxes, with velvet curtains and bed frames in pastel pinks, sky blues, and rich greens; brushed-brass finishes add a subtle sheen. Groups traveling together will love the just-opened bunk room, a luxurious take on the traditional hostel with 10 extra-long twin beds (built by Loren Lew, a local contractor) that can be booked separately (thank you, blackout curtains) or as one space. Silverton, in southwest Colorado, is known for being a rugged, hardy town. But when Shane Fuhrman and Haley Morgan bought a historic red sandstone building on its main drag, their goal was to create a boutique hotel that offered something new to the area. “It’s a very relaxing, calm [area] with huge mountains surrounding us,” Fuhrman says. “To have this warm, clean, soft place to come back to is really nice.” The Wyman opened in May 2019

In some of the 34 private guest rooms, custom lofted beds made from knotty alder—and topped with Tuft & Needle mattresses—separate the sleep space from the sit-or-stand desks. Six eight-person bunk rooms and a camping deck, where you can literally pitch a tent while enjoying access to a (heated) private bathroom, are also available. It all jibes with the team’s philosophy for the property—“everything you need and nothing you don’t”— which sounds like a pretty great motto for vacations, too. As fun and invigorating as travel can be, it also often involves some bumps along the way. That’s why the group behind Kinship Landing— who are experienced world travelers themselves—kept things simple at their year-old hotel, an anchor of downtown Colorado Springs’ revival. It’s “functional design,” says CEO and co-founder Bobby Mikulas, who worked with local Echo Architecture & Interiors on the design. “We wanted things to feel and look and be handmade.”

As one of the architects on Factor’s design team, my own personal passion for architecture developed unknowingly at a young age on our family’s many trips to the country’s National Parks. The awe-inspiring beauty of the parks was always reflected in their grand lodges, timeless places of quiet reverence that enhanced their already magnificent locations and set the stage for every incredible visit. I always came away with a profound sense of place, a deep connection to the natural world, and an appreciation of how the built environment plays a dramatic role in our lives. Now, many years later, I try to impart that same sense of awe and wonder into every project, knowing that our work will serve as a beautiful backdrop against which our clients live their lives.

The Den What was once a catchall space that lacked coherent design and function has been transformed into this modern, slightly cheeky version of a den you’d find in an English manor house. “We didn’t want this to be typical of anything else in the house, which is fresh and light,” says designer Miranda Cullen, principal of Duet Design Group. “This room is really a destination, kind of set apart stylistically from the other spaces.” Inspired by the client’s childhood in England, Cullen and her team created a moody space anchored by a custom built-in, complete with an Avocatus fireplace surround.

46

Dentil molding and beefy door-knocker hardware on the pull-down desks flanking the fireplace provide a European flair. The dark paint that extends across the ceiling (crowned with a textural chandelier) “gives the room such a cozy feel,” Cullen says, pointing out that the palette works because a giant window brings in abundant light. Even better, the design combines tradition with a little sass. For example, the artwork over the fireplace (by Washington, D.C.–based artist Josh Young) looks like a typical old-world portrait— except that the artist added a dash of paint across the sub-

ject’s eyes. The whitewashed hoof legs on the leather ottomans are another playful addition. “Design is personal,” Cullen says. “This family doesn’t take itself too seriously, and we wanted the den to feel like a reflection of them.” No doubt they’re chuffed to bits by the result.

The Dining Room

TOP DENVER DESIGN 2021–22

“Nobody uses a traditional dining room anymore,” says designer Andrea Schumacher, who skipped the formality and bestowed multifunctional good looks upon this space in the House Beautiful show home in Frederick. “You can host dinner here, but you can also pull down a book and have a cup of coffee, or use [the room] as a bar.” Without a client to offer opinions, the designer took inspiration from the home’s small-town surroundings (“lots of tumbleweeds and gorgeous 180-degree views of the mountains,” she summarizes) and the room itself: The modest footprint and tall ceiling led her to paint the entire space a single, striking hue—SherwinWilliams’ Cascades in high gloss—and accent the upper reaches in a custom wallcovering. “I used every single inch of the walls,” she says, noting the sky-high built-in shelves (accessed by a sleek ladder). The integrated bar underneath the shelves comprises a vintage dresser topped with Caesarstone quartz. To fill the lofty ceiling volume, Schumacher chose a multitude of Visual Comfort chandeliers from Circa Lighting that are “representative of the tumbleweeds outside,” she says. (Kudos to the electrician, who had to put 1,400 brass petals into the fixtures before hanging them!) Metal Craft, a local maker, created the dining table’s base from a tree root, which was bleached then paired with a custom copper tabletop. Vintage chairs, warmed up with sheepskins for a Colorado vibe, finish the look—a triumph of modern, Centennial State– inspired style.

The Home Office In an era of endless Zoom meetings and on-again, off-again virtual schooling, a spacious home office might be as coveted as a luxury kitchen. And this walnut-paneled beauty in Broomfield—with a handsome workspace, a steel spiral staircase leading to a loft library, and glass doors that open to a patio for outdoor meetings—is the stuff of quarantine dreams. The office is part of a 9,000-square-foot residence (designed 15 years ago by Denver architects Brad Tomecek and Christopher

Herr) that recently underwent a renovation by Boulder’s Rodwin Architecture and Kimball Modern Design and Interiors. “We rearranged the layout and added contemporary finishes to redefine the very soul of the home,” says architect Scott Rodwin. But before the renovation even started, the designers and homeowners agreed: The bones of the original, old world–inspired library would remain intact. “We decided to keep the existing wood paneling because ofits craftsmanship —despite it not being some-

thing the homeowners would have chosen themselves,” says interior designer Kate Van Sluyter, principal at Kimball Modern Design and Interiors, who tackled the task of complementing the paneling with a mix of clean-lined office furniture from Blu Dot, Design Within Reach, and Room & Board. “In this case, the traditional styling balanced beautifully with the much more modern style that the owners wanted.” To a home office that looks this good, we say: Work from home forever!

The Exterior EXTERIOR ELEVATED Incredible views of the Flatirons and downtown Boulder were lost on this South Boulder property’s original home, whose architecture did little to capitalize on the stellar hillside site. So the owners called in Chris Gray and Steve Perce of architecture firm Bldg Collective to redesign the structure and maximize the views. The team preserved the old home’s foundation, “but even that wasn’t ideally located, so with some structural gymnastics, we cantilevered the main floor at an angle to better accommodate the connection between the interiors and the outdoors,” Gray says. One outcome of their work is this striking outdoor deck (built, along with the rest of the home, by local contractor Buildwell). Accessed from the dining room through large sliding doors, the area is made of batu hardwood decking and topped by a slatted pergola, “so we didn’t limit

the amount of natural light [coming] into the home,” Gray says. Limestone, steel, stucco, and fire-treated clear vertical grain cedar complete the materials palette, which is both contemporary and warm, and aligns beautifully with the landscape design by Hidelly Kane of Kane Hanson Architects. The architectural feat here is that “we gave [the owners] intimate space without the sense that they’re in a fishbowl,” Gray says. The east-facing deck makes the most of the views and the natural topography—which is steep on this side of the lot—and showcases how to marry form and function to maximum effect.

The Kitchen Those of us of a certain age might cringe to classify anything built in the 1990s as vintage, but 30 years of home-decor evolution can’t be denied. Back then, kitchens were often small, isolated spaces, while voluminous dining rooms with oversize tables and chandeliers were the fashion. This Snowmass Village retreat—with its secluded kitchen, colossal dining room, and timber and moss-rock accents—once epitomized ’90s design. So when architect Flynn StewartSevery, principal of Snowmass Village’s F&M Architects, was hired to reimagine the house for today, his first instinct was to convert the dustcollecting dining room into a functional and eye-catching kitchen/great-room core. “This home was built before

kitchens were celebrated public spaces,” Stewart-Severy says. “The hierarchy of rooms has evolved, and we felt it made sense to reevaluate the layout and push the kitchen forward, connecting it to the living room.” Clean white walls and bleached walnut floors replace the original mountain-lodge finishes, and dark trim and cabinets (painted Sherwin-Williams’ Sealskin) offer an elegant contrast. Atlanta-based interior designer Jason Mitchell’s selects—including a waterfalledge Brazilian marble island, Francois & Co. brass-trimmed hood, and shimmering Restoration Hardware chandelier—add a bit of glam that feels right at home in the mountains, creating a house that honors how its owners live now, and for the next 30 years.

When it comes to just-right houses, this contemporary stunner in the Polo Club neighborhood would get Goldilocks’ seal of approval. Credit that to the homeowners, a couple who love to entertain and know exactly how they want a house to function—and who, at the first meeting with their architecture team at Semple Brown Design, laid out sugar packets on the table to represent their ideal floorplan. For the home’s centerpiece, a sunken living room with 32-foot-wide sliding glass doors that open to a patio and pool, the goal was gathering: “They wanted it to function like a boutique hotel, with multiple seating areas, some more intimate than others,” says interior designer Danielle Wallinger, principal of Studio D Interior Design. A tufted, two-sided, custom sectional sofa (which the designer describes as “Harvey Probber–meets– Minotti”) was “designed to offer different configurations throughout the year, depending on the season or the occasion,” Wallinger says. A grand piano in one corner of the room and a built-in bar with a hidden television in the other take the space from game-day hub to holiday sing-along headquarters in an instant. And overhead, a trio of Gallotti & Radice’s Bolle Orizzontale chandeliers adds some fairytale magic. Just like Goldilocks, we’d like to stay awhile.

The footprint of a humble midcentury ranch in Boulder gives rise to a new modernist dwelling that embraces its surroundings—and its owners’ love for design with a story. story by CHRISTINE DEORIO • photography by DAVID LAUER

hen interior designer Stephanie Waddell, her husband, Greg O’Neal, and their young son moved from Chicago to Boulder, they knew they wanted to live as close to the foothills as they could get. A midcentury ranch on a double lot in Lower Chautauqua fit that bill, and its lush Japanese-style gardens were an unexpected bonus. The couple also loved that the home’s unassuming form sat low on the land. But after moving in, they discovered that the home’s dim interiors were too closed-off, making it difficult for the family to connect with their surroundings. So after some time, Waddell began a redesign—in partnership with friends, architect Renée del Gaudio and builder Dan Flohrs—that was all about opening up. BREAKFAST NOOK A glass-walled corner just off the kitchen holds the breakfast nook, where a custom upholstered bench and Arhaus’ Gage fauxleather dining chairs provide seating around a CB2 dining table. living, dining, and cooking space, which opens to the outdoors via a 16-foot-wide slidingglass door. Hammerton Studio’s Rock Crystal Starburst chandelier makes a bold statement in the dining area, which homeowner and interior designer Stephanie Waddell furnished with an oak dining table by DoubleButter, fauxleather dining chairs, and a vintage seat at each end of the table.

OFFICE Built-in walnut cabinetry and floating shelves create a workspace for two in the office, which is flanked by doors to the outdoors. The vintage chairs are newly upholstered in Knoll’s Cleo fabric in Fox. Architect Renée del Gaudio designed a wall to accommodate the vintage card catalog, which Waddell’s husband, Greg O’Neal, purchased via Craigslist years ago. The rug is also vintage, from the Sapere Collection, and the Charlton large triplearm chandelier is by Visual Comfort.

COURTYARD A pathway connects the residence’s rear terrace to a separate structure that houses a recreation room and garage. Both buildings have dark-stained cedar shiplap facades, which contrast dramatically with clear-sealed tongue-and-groove cedar roof eaves. ART SPACE The light-filled, secondfloor stair landing, whose floor-to-ceiling window captures a view of the Flatirons, is the perfect spot to paint. The easel and stool are both vintage finds. The Rue black marble side table is from Tov Furniture.

BEDROOM A new second story holds the main bedroom suite, which opens onto a private deck via a sliding glass door. Rather than covering the bedroom’s Douglas-fir rafters, del Gaudio made them a feature. The wood’s honeyed tone and organic quality add warmth to the lightfilled space. BATHROOM In the main bathroom, hand-painted terra-cotta wall tiles by Tabarka Studio are the backdrop for Sazerac Stitches’ Double Loa sconces with terra-cotta shades and a pair of black Infinity wall mirrors from CB2. The two-tone vanity is by

Wedgewood Cabinetry of Louisville and features black hardware on the hickory drawers and copper hardware on the navy-blue drawers. GARDEN Local landscape design firm Marpa tucked intimate little gardens into all of the dwelling’s exterior corners, giving spaces like this first-floor bedroom a lush landscape to look out on.

5280 Home: You lived in this house for about seven years before renovating. What wasn’t working? Stephanie Waddell: The ceilings were like

7 feet, 9 inches high, which is barely above code. And I’m 6 feet tall, so it felt claustrophobic. The circular layout was strange and offered very little privacy, and most of the windows faced the front, but the backyard was the killer part of the property. Renée del Gaudio: The primary entry to the backyard was through Stephanie and Greg’s bedroom. It was so wrong. Was anything right? RDG: The most redeeming quality was the

way the landscape pocketed into the exterior turns of the footprint. We wanted to keep that footprint and make the connection to the landscape even stronger. It’s almost like the original house was hinting at what could be there. And you took the hint. RDG: The concept was to remove the roof

and exterior and interior walls, then rebuild on the existing foundation—with the exception of an entryway that we carved out and a 280-square-foot lower-level bedroom addition—which saved thousands of dollars in materials and other costs. We created an open-plan kitchen/living/dining core with high clerestory windows to bring in light from all directions—and give a glimpse of the Flatirons. Around that central core are the spaces for sleeping and working, which have adjacent gardens— designed by Marpa—that you can walk out into. And everything opens up and connects to the big garden to the north.

58

59

Your materials palette, which highlights the wood and steel structure, flows from interior to exterior too. RDG: We didn’t see a need to design with un-

necessary materials, or to cover up the Douglas fir rafters. Expressing the framing of a project always helps to describe your concept. You’re showing how it’s built. SW: And it brings some of those earthy elements indoors, which became part of my design vision. I wanted all the interior selections to have an earthy or handmade feel, from the polished concrete floors to the walnut cabinetry to the slate kitchen countertops, which soak up every drop of lime juice when you’re making margaritas, but I’m growing to love how they show every way that we use them. But that wasn’t your boldest move. SW: I played a lot with tile. When I’m design-

ing, I’ll collect patterns and tiles that I love and it’s great when there’s that happy accident when they work together. I did a very odd tile combination in the main bathroom—a hand-painted terra-cotta 60

5280 HOME

backsplash with terrazzo floors and a weathered Moroccan tile shower surround— that I thought no client would ever bite on, but I was able to do it in my house because I was the client! You also got creative by mixing old and new furnishings. SW: I gravitate toward interesting shapes and

things that have the potential to be upgraded with paint or upholstery, so I reupholstered vintage pieces and bought vintage rugs. We’re such vintage thrifters that we hadn’t bought much new furniture in our lives, but we’ve never needed such a large dining table before, so that’s new. RDG: My favorite piece is the fantastic vintage card catalog that functions like a giant junk drawer. SW: We asked Renée to size a wall for it because I can’t live without that thing. It’s got 100-some drawers—for everything from measuring tapes to my college diploma! Part of what I love about a vintage find like that is that it has a lived-in feel; it feels like it’s a part of history. Much like this house.

BACKYARD The updated backyard, designed by Marpa, offers a variety of gathering spaces, including a cozy firepit shaded by a trio of mature aspen trees. “When we bought the house, we were told that those aspens were done for, and 10 years later, they’re still going strong,” Waddell says. To minimize the need for irrigation, Marpa prioritized native plant species and gravel groundcover instead of turf.

I Love My...

MID-MOD CREDENZA

STYLING BY KERRI COLE

Kiri Morken knows how to uncover hard-to-find gems. “I come from a family of treasure-hunters,” says the Denver wardrobe stylist, whose list of clients includes the six hosts of the nationally syndicated, Denver-based talk show Daily Blast Live. Some of her best childhood memories, she says, are of wandering the Quaker City Flea Market in Philadelphia with her mom and aunt and finding original McCoy pottery and Fire-King glassware. So it’s no surprise that the most beloved piece in Morken’s new Lincoln Park home is a midcentury walnut credenza with brass-medallion pulls and woven-cane doors—a gift from the same flea-marketloving aunt. “I would describe my interior design style as midcentury-eclectic with a kiss of deco,” Morken says. “I like drama, but I also like restful spaces.” And this credenza, which stands in her living room and houses books and candles, checks all the boxes. “I like being taken by surprise,” Morken says of both home decor and clothing. “If it delights me—even if it’s not exactly what I’m looking for—I ask, How can I make it work?” Spoken like a true treasure-hunter. —CHERYL MEYERS
