Spring Spruce-Up

Ihave a confession: For as long as I can remember, I’ve had the pile. When I was a teenager, it was a boundless heap that shape-shifted daily and consumed everything in its path. As a 30-something adult, I’ve learned to tame the pile by confining it to a designated spot (a rattan ottoman in my bedroom), but it’s still ever present. No matter how often I destroy the pile, it finds a way to replenish itself, slowly and sneakily.

If it isn’t obvious, I’m talking about a pile of clothing: an assortment of shirts, hoodies, jackets, and jeans that I’ve worn briefly—making them too clean for the hamper—and failed to return to their proper homes in my closet. It’s a bad habit that I’ve tried to break, but it wasn’t until I read professional organizer Stephanie Sikora’s tidying tips (“Clean Up Your Act” on page 27) that I realized why I continue

to battle with this nemesis. In the article, Sikora notes that, on average, people only wear about 20 percent of their wardrobe, meaning that up to 80 percent of that clothing could just be clutter. Indeed, my small closet is jam-packed with pieces I haven’t worn (or even looked at) in years, leaving little room for the items in my current rotation, which—you guessed it— end up in pile purgatory.

This spring-cleaning season, I’m on a mission to create functional storage systems with Sikora’s organization tips for the most irksome areas of the house. Who knows? Maybe I’ll defeat the pile once and for all.

WHAT’S HOT IN DENVER DESIGN

Prety EnoghToEat

Yes, you can eat flowers, and some of the best edible varieties are easy to grow in Denver backyards.
› 5280 HOME 17 photograph by LILY MORELLO
by MICHELLE JOHNSON

For Theresa Halliburton and Kristen Kapoor, owners of Flouwer Co., flowers are more than just pretty faces. Since 2019, the duo has been creating a variety of pantry items—from artisanal crackers to cocktail garnishes—infused with edible blooms, and last November, they opened their first retail shop, in West Highland. “We eat with our eyes first, and it’s so fun to play and experiment with the different flavors and colors [of flowers] in recipes,” Halliburton says. Here, the neighbors-turned-business-partners share 10 of their favorite edible flower varieties that are easy to grow in Colorado.

BLOOM APPÉTIT

Flower: Nasturtium

Flavor: Savory, peppery, radish-like

Try it: Stuff flowers with a softcheese-and-herb mixture for a pretty appetizer; coat the lily-pad-shaped leaves with olive oil, then bake and sprinkle with garlic salt (Halliburton’s kids call these kale-chip substitutes “lily pad chips”).

Flower: Borage

Flavor: Fresh, delicate, cucumber-like

Try it: Freeze into ice cubes and add to white sangria or your favorite summer cocktail; sprinkle atop gazpacho or cold cucumber soup for a beautiful garnish; mix into salads.

Flower: Pansy and viola

Flavor: Mild, grassy

Try it: Vibrant colors and a subtle flavor make these blossoms very versatile: Use as a cocktail garnish, in veggie spring rolls, atop cupcakes, or pressed onto cookies before baking (the colors withstand heat).

Flower: Rose

Flavor: Sweet, fruity

Try it: Bake into cookies and cakes (but use caution—a little goes a long way).

Flower: Daylily

Flavor: Green bean, snow pea

Try it: Batter and fry buds and serve with a spicy aioli.

Flower: Apple blossom and crab apple blossom

Flavor: Soft, floral

Try it: Make into a syrup or jelly; mix into a fruit salad; candy flowers and use as a delicate garnish on cakes and tarts.

Flower: Alyssum

Flavor: Sweet, peppery

Try it: This relative of kale, cauliflower, and broccoli is great in soups and salads. Or dry the tiny blooms in a flower press and decorate a cake with them.

Flower: Marigold

Flavor: Bitter

Try it: Best reserved as a garnish for savory dishes. Bigger marigold varieties have loads of petals that can be used as sprinkles.

Flower: Bee balm

Flavor: Oregano, bergamot

Try it: Combine with citrus juice, extra-virgin olive oil, and herbs and use as a marinade for meat or fish.

Flower: Dill blossoms

Flavor: Fresh, grassy

Try it: Anywhere you’d use dill leaves: in salads, paired with seafood, in a jar of pickles, etc.

3 TIPS FOR GROWING YOUR OWN EDIBLE FLOWER GARDEN

KEEP IT EASY For the hands-off gardener, Flouwer Co. sells premixed seed blends that will yield colorful, flavorful edible flowers with little effort. Each blend is designed with varying bloom times in mind for a garden that’s active through the seasons.

OPT FOR POTS Instead of amending your yard’s soil to create a fertile environment for edible flower seeds, plant them in pots or raised beds. “It’s super easy to build a box, throw some logs in, and spread an organic soil on top,” Halliburton says, noting that the logs will help garden beds retain moisture. “Then you’re not fighting with Colorado’s clay soil.”

GO NATURAL You wouldn’t spray harmful chemicals on your veggie garden, and the same rule should apply to your edible flower crop. “Stay completely away from pesticides,” Halliburton says. “If you’re having a pest issue, it’s usually because of overcrowding or the plant is in the wrong spot.” Skip the toxins and include marigolds (edible flowers that naturally deter garden pests) in your mix.

Pillow Talk

STAY TUNED This fall, Krishnamurthy will return to India to source fabric for a new pillow collection inspired by the religious celebration Diwali, also known as the Festival of Lights.

HOME

Sarita Krishnamurthy is not afraid of color. And even though many of her clients hire her to update their kitchens or bathrooms because of her penchant for vibrant hues and bold patterns, “sometimes it’s a challenge because I have to temper it,” says the owner of Denver’s In.De Interior Architecture and Design

But back in 2014, as Krishnamurthy strolled through a textile shop in India with her mother, she didn’t hold back. “I saw these candy-colored fabrics, and they were so beautiful,” the designer recalls. “I was really inspired by them.” She bought a few yards of each of her favorite silks, brought them back to Denver, and had them made into throw pillows—a low-investment, nonpermanent way, she figured, for her clients and website customers to add pops of hot pink, electric orange, and shimmering chartreuse into their homes.

Since then, Krishnamurthy has made more trips back to South Asia, which have yielded new pillow collections. For one, she worked with Indian artisans to make custom block-printed designs; another features jute, a textile fiber made from a plant that thrives in tropical climates like India’s; yet another line employs embroidered vintage fabrics. Each run is limited, so when all the pillows are sold (directly to her clients or via her website and Etsy shop), they’re gone for good. “You’re getting something that not everybody can go to West Elm and pick up,” Krishnamurthy says.

Another reason to feel good about investing in one of these pillows, which are priced from $155? A portion of each sale goes to Shadhika, a Denver-based organization that educates and empowers young women in India. “The pillows are a way that I can use my design skills, but they also tie back to my culture, my heritage,” says Krishnamurthy, whose parents grew up in Mumbai and immigrated to the United States in the 1960s. “India has always been a big part of my personal life. It’s been such an experience to have it be part of my professional life, as well.” in-de.com

Out On A Limb

A one-room retreat built into the trees in Manitou Springs is the stuff of fairy forest dreams.

Like so many recent home design projects, this Manitou Springs treehouse is a product of the pandemic. In 2020, when Robin Wall’s two college-age children returned home from school to take online courses, she unexpectedly found herself with a full house. For screen breaks, the family took nature hikes through the 40 acres of pristine, Sutherland Creek–traversed wilderness that surrounds their historic home (a former hunting lodge). As the kids rediscovered the Douglas fir, Ponderosa pine, and blue spruce forest they had explored as children, they recalled a long-forgotten dream of a treehouse tucked among the branches. What better time

than now, they thought, to bring it to life at last?

The trio created a rough concept—more zen retreat than clubhouse—and Wall enlisted handyman Richard Faldzinski to build a bridge over the creek and a set of stairs leading up to the project site, a forested plot surrounded on three sides by the water. Ed Ott of D & O Construction was hired to finish building the treehouse (a feat, given that the remote location lacks electricity and road access), and designer Natalia Romero spearheaded the interior concept.

The team relied on locally sourced and reused materials to create the nature-inspired hideaway: native Douglas fir from a local mill for the structure,

segments of an old metal roof repurposed from a nearby farmhouse, and 100-year-old French windows that Wall found on Facebook Marketplace for $200. Inside, two upholstered daybeds, designed by Romero and topped with charcoal-linen cushions from Hedgehouse, accommodate cozy gatherings and sleepovers.

“A perfect afternoon in here is when snow is falling,

the wood stove is burning, and hot chocolate is warming up on the stove,” Wall says, adding that the treehouse invites her to slow down and experience nature. “Creating a space immersed in the forest has been a great adventure and an inexhaustible source of inspiration, as well as a lesson about the importance of having an open mind.”

If your home's storage systems don't exactly spark joy, consider these pro organization tips to spiff up your most utilitarian spaces.

SPRING CLEANING

The Pantry

Six dusty cans of garbanzo beans. Forgotten, half-empty pasta boxes. Loose soy sauce packets from takeout orders eaten long ago. If opening your kitchen pantry makes you want to retire from cooking for good, try these tips.

PHONE A FRIEND

Small pantries require strategic organization. “What space do we have, and how do we maximize it?” Sikora suggests asking yourself, noting that this is best done with someone who doesn’t use your pantry every day. “It’s really hard for people to see their space any differently, but having a third party with an objective perspective can help you find opportunities, like leveraging wall space.”

WASTE NOT

A crowded pantry is a money waster. “If you can’t see what you have, you over-purchase…because you don’t know you have three ketchups and buy more,” Sikora says. Her solution: Remove everything from your shelves, discard expired goods, and rearrange each item so you can see its label—like you’re strolling the aisles at Sprouts. Have unwanted (unopened and unexpired) pantry goods? Consider donating them to Denver Community Fridges (denvercommunityfridges. com), which has five fridgeand-shelf setups across the metro area that anyone can grab food from at any time.

GIVE EVERY ITEM A HOME

Sikora creates specific homes for each food category, placing cans on risers so she can quickly see if she’s out of something. Labeled bins for categories like pasta and snacks also

Handy Helper

help. “Labeling is such a powerful communication tool: It makes it very obvious to everyone in the house that this is where a particular item goes.”

MAKE IT EASY

Think about how everyone in your household navigates the pantry and arrange it accordingly. For example, if you’re a green tea addict, corral your kettle, matcha, and whisk onto one tray. A frequent bread baker? Keep your go-to flours closest to your pantry door. Strategic placement is even more important for parents. “If you have kids, putting their snacks down low so they can reach them makes sense,” Sikora says. “Put them too high, and they’ll scale the shelves!”

DECANT IT

Decanting pastas, flours, and other foodstuffs into resealable containers looks much neater than a lineup of sundry boxes and bags. “It keeps your food fresh and allows you to see at a glance how much you have,” Sikora adds. Plus, decanting is easier on the environment: You can BYO bags and buy grocery essentials in bulk from stores like Sprouts and Natural Grocers and avoid the wasteful packaging altogether. But Sikora has a decanting caveat: “I always ask people, ‘Is it realistic for you? Do you think that, week after week, you’re going to refill this jar?’ If your answer is no, then don’t do it. It needs to fit your lifestyle.”

Once you’ve cleared your shelves, your pantry will undoubtedly need a deep clean before being restocked. To get the job done, check out the cleaning brand Bona (bona.com). With its U.S. headquarters located just south of Denver, Bona makes products that are EPA Safer Choice certified, dye free, and made with plant-derived ingredients. Boulder Clean (1908brands.com) is another local favorite that offers everything from Valencia-orange-scented dish soap to plant-based disinfecting wipes.

The Bedroom Closet

When Sex and the City ’s Carrie Bradshaw stuffed extra sweaters into her oven because there wasn’t enough room in her closet, we felt that. Very few of us have California Closets–worthy storage space, whether we’re fashionistas or we wear the same Patagonia pullover day after day. Here’s the fix.

PURGE PROUDLY

“The average person only wears about 20 percent of their wardrobe,” Sikora says, meaning that up to 80 percent of the clothing in your closet could be adding to the clutter. The solution: Remove every item and ask yourself what you really use. For example: How many pairs of black leggings do you actually wear and need?

“Before you even think about organizing it, you have to simplify it,” Sikora says. Fair warning: If you skip this

painful step, any system you create will inevitably fall apart.

KEEP YOUR GOAL TOP OF MIND

Even KonMari devotees know it’s not easy to give away clothes tied to memories. Maybe you wore that blazer on your first date with your wife or donned that skirt at your baby shower. “If your goal for the space is to walk in and see your pretty sweaters, bring it back to that [to stay focused],” says Sikora, who challenges her

Handy Helper

clients to ask themselves, “Are these additional items worth taking up that space?”

If you can’t bear to part with, say, your bridal gown or your granny’s mink stole, Sikora advises putting such sentimental items in a protective container and tucking it away in a climate-controlled area of the home.

WORK WITH WHAT YOU’VE GOT

Wondering whether to fold or hang your jeans? Unless you’re going to entirely redo

your closet, be sure to work with the space you have— whether that’s shelving or hanging rods. “Some people want to fold everything, but if they don’t have shelf or drawer space, it won’t stay organized,” Sikora says. And this may seem obvious, but it’s easy to forget: Keep the items you wear most frequently front and center and relegate lesserworn pieces (Christmas sweaters and 4-inch stilettos, for example) to a higher shelf. Coloradans

know the weather is always changing, so it’s better to hone your wardrobe to what you really wear than attempt a seasonal rotation.

DIVIDE AND CONQUER

Drawer dividers “create specific homes within drawers so they don’t turn into hot messes,” Sikora says. Use them to build cubbies for socks, bras, and more. “Good shoe organizers can often help leverage underutilized spaces, too.”

The Garage

When it’s a dumping ground for sports gear, DIY projects, and lawn care equipment, a garage can quickly become an abyss. In fact, according to a survey by the National Association of Professional Organizers, some 50 percent of American homeowners have deemed the garage the most disorganized place in their house. “For a lot of people, the garage is the first point of entry into a home, so that’s not the feeling you want to have every time you arrive,” Sikora says. Here, her tips for tackling this space.

LOOK UP

“In garages, you have to maximize every square inch,” Sikora says. Creating specific vertical storage spaces helps get items off the floor and out of your hair. “If it can be hung, I want to hang it, because there’s so much underutilized space on our walls for scooters, bikes, camping chairs, tents, and more. Hooks [and pegboards] are your friends!”

DO A SEASONAL DEEP CLEAN

At the very least, garages require a seasonal cleanout, Sikora advises. “Each season is an opportunity to assess:

‘Are we still using this?’” she says, adding that this is the perfect moment to chuck kids’ broken sidewalk chalk and other items that may have been needlessly stockpiled over the past few

months. Skis and snow boots can be tucked away—and bikes and scooters rolled out to a more accessible spot— come spring.

BE A TASKMASTER

Next to the entry door of her garage, Sikora built a simple shelf that she can reach from inside the house. This functions as a landing zone for boxes that need to be broken

down for recycling. “With the cars parked in there, there’s no room, it’s cold, it’s dark, and you just want to throw [the box],” she says. Problem solved!

DISCARD SAFELY

Let’s face it: Those cans of dried paint stacked in the corner aren’t doing you any favors. For old paints and wood stains, call your local

paint supply store to inquire about recycling. “Some take 25 gallons at a time and may already be at capacity,” Sikora notes. The Happy Beetle (thehappybeetle.com), a local, subscription-based recycling company, will pick up old paint, plus lightbulbs, toys, batteries, electronics, and other items collecting dust in your garage.

Handy Helper

If you have a garage full of things you’ve been meaning to schlep to Goodwill, call Denver-based Junk Trunk (thejunktrunkco.com), Sikora’s go-to recycler for everything from electronics to chemicals. “They go through all resources before anything goes to the dump, creating a one-stop shop for the client,” she says.

How To Smudge Like A Pro

If you recently moved into a new home that doesn’t feel like yours yet, or your family finally recovered from a virus that kept you cooped up for weeks, it might be time to clear the energy in your home. “We’re sending out energy all the time, and our emotions can imprint upon spaces and objects,” says Matthew Tenzin, founder of Aspenand Boulder-based True Home Design. Here, he shares three simple steps for wiping your home’s energetic slate clean. truehomedesign.com

TUNE IN

“The first step is to ‘listen’ to the space—notice how you feel in your body, what sensations or emotions you have when you’re in that space,” Tenzin says. Maybe you feel anxious, tired, or a bit frustrated—whatever the reaction, make a mental note of it.

SET AN INTENTION

“Starting outside the house or room, light a candle or some incense, sage, or cedar, and take a moment to set an intention,” Tenzin says. Think about what feeling you want to evoke in that space, whether it’s a sense of happiness, clarity, or ease.

LET IT GO

With the incense, sage, etc. in hand, walk around the space. “Open the windows and doors to let the smoke travel throughout the room(s),” Tenzin says, adding that you can also close your eyes and visualize light filling the space. “Repeat your positive intention to release the stuck energy.”

TRIAL BY FIRE

The house’s worn stucco facades were replaced with dark-stained planks of rot-resistant, kiln-dried wood from Montana Timber Products. Nearly all of the windows were replaced with aluminumclad fiberglass versions, and a new standing-seam metal roof provides durability and fire resistance.

A long list of challenges and setbacks—including a devastating fire—couldn’t stop an interior designer and her family from transforming their tired Front Range property into a versatile modern home.

story by CHRISTINE DEORIO • photography by DAVID LAUER

Los Angeles transplants Amy Pigliacampo and Corey Szopinski knew they had their work cut out for them when they bought this Front Range home at auction six years ago. “I wanted a project that was going to be a massive transformation,” says Pigliacampo, a former fashion stylist who had recently shifted to a career in interior design. But had the couple known that every problem they thought the house might have would turn out to be the worst possible version of that problem, would they still have forged ahead?

Perhaps not. The original house “was kind of a science experiment,” says architect Ian Read, a college friend of Pigliacampo’s who—along with his wife and co-principal, Gretchen Krebs, and project architect Andy Pittman—helped address the home’s failing systems while bringing a sense of simplicity to its cluttered facades and disjointed floor plan. “The person who built it was super into sustainability and created his own versions of systems that could, when designed and built properly, result in a net-zero home,” Read explains. “But when those systems don’t work, they can create big problems.” Such as the extreme heat a faulty fan system created in the solarium, resulting in a delaminated glass door. Or the radon issue caused by defective homemade geothermal tubes. Or the moisture that crept behind improperly installed EIFS stucco, damaging the exterior walls.

But those troubles paled in comparison to the fire that broke out mid-renovation. Sparked by a lightning strike, it quietly smoldered in the attic for 24 hours before making its way down the side of the house late one night, while the homeowners and their two young children slept in their temporary basement bedrooms. The family

To achieve her vision of walnut cabinetry without breaking the bank, homeowner Amy Pigliacampo had Fort Collins–based Custom Classic Cabinetry create grain-matched walnut cabinets for the interior of the U-shaped kitchen and highgloss, white drawer fronts for the outside of the peninsula. escaped, but the second story and attic required a complete rebuild.

In some ways, Pigliacampo reflects, “the fire was the best thing that could have happened.” For one, it allowed the couple to vault the secondfloor ceilings—a move that hadn’t been in the original renovation budget. “Now, the peak is 14 feet, so there’s some drama that wasn’t there before,” she says. It also gave the design team the opportunity to tackle more of the home’s aesthetic oddities—such as its “ridiculous number of windows, only three of which were the same size,” Pigliacampo notes. “We eliminated about 13 windows and unified the spacing between the others,” which—along with the addition of dark wood siding and a metal roof—“transformed the exterior.”

The windows that remain are plentiful enough to fill the home with light while also inviting interaction with the half-acre property, which includes ample turf for yard games and a spacious terrace. “The main thing that strikes me [about the renovation] is that the rooms feel much more connected to the outdoors in a way that makes sense,” says Read, who reoriented the living room toward the backyard with the addition of a woodstove and glass door. And with its fans functioning properly, the solarium—now filled with happy houseplants—is “like a little oasis” no matter the time of year, he adds. “It’s nice to sit in there and feel kind of hot while looking out at the snow.”

To amplify the interior’s sense of spaciousness, Pigliacampo stripped away every unnecessary wall, door, cabinet, and color. “I think the

person who designed this place had forward-thinking ideas, so I felt like I could go more modern without taking away the spirit of the house,” she explains. After painting every room white, she added oak and black tile floors, then custom, grain-matched walnut cabinetry. Next came a collection of vintage Moroccan rugs. “I love starting a space with the rug because it provides an opportunity to tell a story with colors I might never have considered otherwise,” she says. “Because of the plane the rug is on—it’s not hitting you in the face—you can live with more color and pattern there, and everything else can be quieter and cleaner.”

Like the family room’s low-slung sofa upholstered in a faded gray-green velvet. Or the mid-mod credenzas—selected for their versatility—that Pigliacampo placed throughout the house. “At one point, they held Legos, then they held my [fabric] samples,” she says. “I like for furniture to have multiple lives and functions, because life changes.”

A set of 12 modern, fiberglass shell chairs in a muted rainbow of colors also moves around the house as needs and moods shift. “I can change the configuration around the dining table and create a whole new palette,” Pigliacampo says. “I’ll have those chairs forever, and I’ll always find ways to use them differently.”

Which seems to be this designer’s superpower. “I’m able to visualize what something can be in a very immediate way,” she says. “Like this place: [Before I even saw it in person], I knew it was the house. And the way it looks now is exactly how I believed it could be.”

A FAMILY HOME NEAR BOULDER'S MOUNT SANITAS RECEIVES A TOP-TO-BOTTOM RENOVATION THAT PROVIDES ITS INHABITANTS WITH A GREATER CONNECTION TO THE OUTDOORS—AND TO ONE ANOTHER.

Eight-paned glass sliding doors provide the home's kitchen and dining area with a seamless connection to the second-floor deck.

Hop on Surround Architecture’s website and you’ll notice that each of the homes in the firm’s portfolio has been given a clever name that captures its aesthetic, spirit, or locale.

(Think: Shadow Box, Black Bear, or Trailhead.)

So, when the owners of this North Boulder house attended their first meeting with Anna Slowey, director at Surround and the lead architect and designer for their renovation, they already had a name in mind: Koselig. Loosely translated, the Norwegian word (pronounced koosh-lee) means

coziness. It’s a close relative to the ubiquitous Danish hygge, but the difference is that koselig describes a connection to nature, to place, and to the people you love.

Set on a triple-wide lot in the Newlands neighborhood, the couple’s home already provided a strong connection to nature and to place. (Newlands is ideal for outdoor enthusiasts— it’s common to spot a bobcat, buck, or bear passing through, and the neighborhood’s quiet Fourth Street is unofficially known as Lycra Highway for its steady stream of cyclists, runners,

and hikers.) But the house also had deep ties to the 1990s, when a renovation created a choppy layout that wasn’t functional for this young family of five. “Our vision was to have a space where you could find a quiet spot alone but also connect as a family,” the homeowner says.

Following Boulder’s strict building codes, the Surround team worked within the home’s 4,000-square-foot envelope. Slowey’s first order of business was to replace a series of oddly configured outdoor decks with a 400-square-foot addition. The boxy, cantilevered form houses a mainlevel great room, which the family calls the “gathering room.” This new hub of the house encompasses a handsome, hardworking kitchen, ample seating for dining, and a fireplace-equipped hangout area.

A play shed (which the family calls “the cabin”) is tucked behind a mature apple tree.

“Opening up the main living space allows the laughter, homework, cooking, and eating to happen in the same space,” Slowey explains. This design move also invites nature inside, the homeowner adds: “The large windows and patio doors allow us to watch sunrises; the whole space turns orange and pink. We watch lightning storms in the summer, and in the winter, when the snow is falling, it feels like we’re living inside the coziest snow globe.”

Inspired by those natural wonders, Slowey and the homeowners created an organic materials palette comprising a mix of leather, wool, walnut, oak, ceramic, and linen, all in nature-inspired colors. “The interior materials were chosen to lend a down-to-earth, welcoming, and cozy sensibility,” Slowey says. “I never thought I’d have a pair of blue sofas,” the homeowner says of the gathering room’s clean-lined seating, “but the space is so inviting, and I can’t imagine it without them.” The family’s collection of women-made art also highlights natural motifs, from modern botanicals to wispy clouds.

When it came to the exterior renovation, the design team celebrated the same organic sensibility, choosing charcoal-stained lap siding in varying depths and light gray limestone for contrast. “We were working with a shaded lot, due to the proximity to the foot-

hills and to mature trees,” Slowey says. “How the home visually nestled into the setting was important. We loved the idea of a dark, bold object within this rich, green landscape.”

Slowey collaborated with Boulder’s Marpa Landscape Architecture & Construction to reinvent the spacious lot for outdoor living and kid-approved fun. “The rear garden was conceived as a lush and magical place to gather with friends or family in a very protected environment,” Slowey says. “Little paths meander through the flowering ground-cover perennials, and many moments are devoted to kids and adults alike.” A trampoline is nestled into an aspen grove, and a play shed—which was designed by Slowey and named “the cabin” by the family—is tucked behind an old apple tree. “The kids spend time in the cabin listening to music and playing chess,” the homeowner says. In the summer, it’s sometimes used for family “glamping.”

“We wanted the house to be where we loved spending time together,” the homeowner notes. “This goal was tested during the pandemic [the house was completed in 2019], and we often told one another back then: ‘This is the best spot to be told to stay.’” Three years later, it remains their favorite place to gather, taking in the nature—and koselig—that surrounds them.

I Love My...

Furniture design duo Lindsey Price and Donnie Criswell (at right) spent more than a year perfecting their Vail lounge chair— a minimalist perch with a slim, powder-coated steel frame, leather back straps, and cloudlike cushion. But it was worth the wait: “Vail emerged as the clear winner [of our collection],” Price says, noting that the couple’s brand, Denver Modern, has released several iterations of the bestselling piece since its debut in 2019. The newest edition, pictured above, is a patio-ready version outfitted with weather-resistant nylon straps and durable, machine-washable upholstery. “The most important feature of our design is comfort, and also there’s this convenience factor,” Price says. “People want beautiful, long-lasting [furniture], but they also want to be able to clean it when messes happen.” A seat fit for the rugged Colorado lifestyle. denvermodern.com
