"Bathing" in the field New experience of Da-an Beach This project attempts to reconnect people and polluted beach through experiencing “spatial ceremony. The existed constructions are rebuilt to be several part tectonics for experiencing. Each tectonic space presents at least one environmental element (sunlight, tide, wind, sand) feature that creates a sense of ritual and poetic atmosphere in the area. People would dismiss distracting thoughts gradually during accomplish the procedure of the spatial ceremony. A framed seawater pool and the untouchable ocean is the final scene for people; people would realize the damage of this field and rethink the relation between human and nature. Ceremony

Sensory and Spatial experience

Invisible Pollution

A ceremony is a process through physical participation to transform mental feeling. Different religions or festivals have unique rituals. The propose of ceremony usually have symbolic meanings, such as conveying appreciation and missing mind to the ancients; expressing their respect to nature; awakening people’s consciousness to something.

People have the first expression of the space is impacted by the visual feeling about the light. Once the light becomes weak in the area, people will sharpen other sensory perceptions to capture the smell, sound and the sense of touch in the space. These feeling will create the experience that people never have before.

Environmental pollution is an essential issue in this modern world. People usually ignore the seriousness of invisible pollution (like water pollution, air pollution), this project discusses how to recreate a series of “ceremony” to let people experience the polluted land and awaken people’s consciousness to environmental protection.

Spatial ceremonies , Environmental awareness When people visit the beach, they do a series of process-entrance, storage, changing clothes, taking shower- before into the water. I redefine these processes as “spatial ceremonies” to experience Da-an beach. Through a series of new experiences to let people recognize this field and realize the water pollution of this land.

People come to Da-an beach happily when they notice it is reopened, what they do not know yet is that Da-an beach is different from the past.

Walking into the new facility space, sunlight, seawater, wind, and sand are combined with space. people enjoy the new atmosphere of the space and do a series of “ceremony” before into the water.

Untouchable Beach , Untelled story Da-an beach used to be a popular hotspot in Taichung, since the seawater was polluted by sewage from near animal husbandry, this beautiful field has been abandoned and prohibited to swim. Nowadays only a few visitors come to Da-an beach for sea viewing.

When people close to the beach, what they see is the limited area with purified seawater and the polluted ocean. Finally, they realize they can not swim and play in the ocean freely anymore.

Natural elements , Reconsruction , Installations

In order to create a unique experience, I analyze the elements of the surrounding-su periodic change and the most influential place on the beach. Furthermore, I utilize these constructions to rebuilt new experience place. All rebuilt materials are sustainable to reduce create some installations to let people close to the sea without touching it.

Sandfall entrance

After walking through a light-guiding tunnel, people arrive at the beach entrance; the first sight is the slowly flowing sandfall. Without the full view of the beach, people could only hear the sound of blowing wind and tide which imply the place.

The storage area brings a different feeling to people. The light sparkles in the space and reflects on the water surface, which looks like twinkle stars. The romantic and poetic space’s route is impacted by tide. It only appears while the tide is rising.

SPEED AND CITY Future train station of Kaohsiung

This project discusses the relationship between urban and a train station, and how the train station represents a city and shows the charm of a city. We give the future train station an imagination: in the future, Kaohsiung train station will be regarded as a lobby of city, which combines multiple programmes and city features for people use. The future train station is not only for transportation, but it also plays the role of tourism, commercial, culture, and entertainment. Team Work Autumn 2011 Partner : wai-che Lee Location : Kaohsiung, Taiwan Advisor : chun-kai Fang

From Industrial city to Livable city Kaohsiung is a typical industrial city. In the past, the first impression was lots of factories and the harbor when people talked about Kaohsiung. Infrastructures such as railways usually were built to develop industries. Today, Kaohsiung has transformed from an industrial city to a livable city. Many tourists visit this city to enjoy its well-known hotspots and experience the local lifestyle. In the case of this trend, the future train station should play a positive role to connect people and Kaohsiung’s multiple features.

Features of Kaohsiung In order to let station have Kaohsiung’s features, we analyze four parts- urban plan, life culture, industrial change, and station’s history- and choose six features to implant in the station design.

1

|

Green belt

As an industrial city, Kaohsiung doesn’t have enough green space for citizens. After the underground railway project finish, the existing railway space could be transformed as the urban green belt axis which bring people a new cityscape.

2

| Observatory

There are many hotspots around the downtown. As the center of the city, the station has a great location to view these hotspots.

3

| Public Plaza

The station location is the junction of the commercial and residential districts. To ease crowded city, we plan a plaza for the new train station; this will provide people a place to do leisure activities.

4

| Timing Event

Night market culture is popular in Kaohsiung. It is a timing event: the road is used by the vehicle in the daytime but it becomes a lively night market place at night. We want this kind of events could exist in the station.

5

| Container Unit

The container is the symbol element of Kaohsiung's industry. We u s e c o n t a i n e r s a s a u n i t which can combine with different programmes.

6

| History Reserving

The old station represents the pa r t h i s to r y of K a o h s i u n g . I n order to remind people about its contribution, we design to keep it on the site and reproduce the process of its retirement scene.

Plan of Future station According to the above characteristics and integrating the functions and of the station, we have plans for the future station: 1. programmes' height | Different programmes will be planned in the several heights, the ground plaza will be used for multiple activities; 2. Main entrance | The viaduct will become the main route to arrive station's lobby, this plan will ease the traffic congestion. 3. Stucture and circulation | Station's main structure is made by steel construction which represents the industrial style; we provide two vertical circulations for people, each circulation has different angles to enjoy the city view. 4.New programmes | We add commercial, culture, and leisure programmes into the station to ser vice different groups.

Units | Programmes We combine container units and new programmes to create unique user experiences.

03 Collector's House Personal Work Autumn 2009 Program : House Location :Taichung,Taiwan Advisor : wei-ming Ruan A livable space with arts

The owner is a family who loves collecting paintings and hopes to have artworks in every part of the house. This project discusses how to create interesting spaces for art viewing and circulations without disturbing the family’s private area. The design also utilizes spatial features to enhance interaction between family members.

Art and Space | Visual focus, Circulation guiding At first, I try to define the relationship between art and space. The circulation of people in the area is guided by visual attention. I design to put artworks at the place of circulation’s turning pointArtworks not only embellish space but also guide the direction.

The scenery of nature The project’s site is located near a beautiful small river. In order to let this family enjoy the view, the elevation of the riverside will respond to interior space and river scenery.
