Statement

Starting an architecture journey from the college, my life changes a lot. Not only the view I see the world, but also the thoughts I think about the world. After taking a five-year undergraduate program in Changsha University of Science and Technology (a school in the middle of the mainland in China), I learned about the form, the function, the circulation, etc... In the following year, I had two internships in two different companies- SHENZHEN AUBE and WAU Studio and my working experience included concept design and technical drawings. In order to explore architecture deeper, I came to SCI-Arc with an M.Arch II program. It is an unorthodox school which break the traditional grid of architecture, building up a creative lab for architects. The entire environment inspires me and gives a motivation to keep adventures.

Man Made Nature Design Studio
Spring 2018 DS 1200 ( 2GBX ) Instructor: Tom Wiscombe Team: Cisem Saglam & Jiekai Yi
Issues of labor, commerce, tourism, and global economies marked the final phases of what is usually called “modernization”. This process can be described as the end of nature - using Zizek’s words, “Nature is over, there is no nature anymore.” And while classical ideals of nature disappear, the territory of nature has silently become an area for work, speculation and potentially a new aesthetic of architecture. It is precisely in this arena that the studio will look for new architectural opportunities. This year the 2GBX Design Studio will take on this controversial discussion - how contemporary “architecture” engages with “nature” within a high density city setting like Downtown LA. The project is productively situated between a mid-rise and tower massing, during one of the fastest economic turns that transformed a low density industrial zone into a highly valuable land for mixed-used developments. These definitions are often relative to context and are relevant here, as the area of the project is in transition from horizontal fringe to a vertical landscape condition. This mixture of expansive
market hall and repetitive vertical housing units will be exploited through the deliberate integration of nature, real, implied or fake. This combination will require innovative reconsider of circulation models, hybrid structural systems and an extensive exploration of material and color. Mixed-use buildings trade in programmatic distinction and historically have separated commerce and housing. Starting in the 1970’s the late architect and enveloper John Portman tested boundaries with grand atrium that created interior vistas and a mixture of atmospheres. The projects blurred the physical and/or implied line between expansive collective space, intimate units and nature. The section was utilized to offer a dramatic model for mixed programs. In this project we aim to challenge the clarity of these borders to design the spaces of the everyday that are punctuated by curated atmospheres that reinvent, and possibly distribute, the qualities market hall.

Complex Morphologies Design Studio
FALL 2017 DS 1200 ( 2GAX ): Semblances Instructor: Casey Rehm Team: Jiekai Yi & Chian_Liao
This studio will interrogate the potential of new forms of digital perception in architecture. The studio will exploit contemporary methods of measuring and analyzing 3D form and space in conjunction with human and computational forms of design production to identify how this transforms our understanding of the relationship between context and architecture. The technology behind data collection allows for the production of overwhelming quantities of information which need to be interpreted and structured. How can we rethink our relationship as designers to these methods to allow for new possibilities in architectural production. “..perhaps the most intense and lasting effect that the digital will have on architecture culture will be its capacity to once again bring attention to the real by operating on its fragments in a postproduction space in order to generate alternative futures, what we could describe as a practice of engaged digitalism.” Jesús Vassallo – Seamless: Digital Collage and Dirty Realism in Architecture Our focus is on the aesthetic dimension of architecture and the possible production of new modes of being in the world. If, as argued above, the shift in modes of reproduction accompanies transformations in the architectural invention, a contemporary approach to architecture would be affiliated to modes of imaging that dislocate the subjectivity of single point perspective, such as machine vision. As a starting point we will work on producing a composite form of selected source material derived from the site context that redefines the formal relationships inherent in selected elements and shifts these toward an architectural scale.

Visual Studies I Visual Studies I
FALL 2017 4200 ( 2GAX ): Visual Studies 1 Instructor: Kristy Balliet & Casey Rehm Team: Jiekai Yi & Chian Liao The course will cover issues of contemporary representation and the development of splines in relation to complex digital form and physical and visual space. Visualization today encompasses the development, exploration and communication of information and ideas in multiple mediums. The course will engage recent techniques related to splines, gesture interfaces and virtual reality. The course will develop critical visual literacy and review methods for generating and evaluating lines, surfaces and volume. We will review modes of drawing and modeling in three-dimensional space, including the importance of precision and abstraction. Exercise and associated tutorials provide opportunities to discover novel concepts through transformation and tactical work flows. Finally, the course will foster the development of architectural character. You will be expected to develop expertise and execute your intentions with clarity. The exercises will range from straightforward drawing tasks to tasks that will require aggressive experimentation. This course will introduce students to methods and concepts of three-dimensional drawing (zero gravity), digital modeling, multiple realities and digital/physical fabrication.

Advanced Materials & Tectonics FALL 2017 AS3200 ( 2GAX ): Advanced Materials & Tectonics Instructor: Maxi Spina Team: Yue Qi _Siyao Zheng_Chengxi Hou_Jiekai Yi Precedent Study: International Baroque Museum
The class paired areas of investigation and speculation are Tectonics- predominantly building envelopes- and Performance - largely consisting of technical, technological, cultural and environmental dimensions. Working in groups throughout the entire semester, students analyze and document a Precedent in order to formulate a series of hypotheses in an attempt to construct a number of interrelated tectonic conjectures. In scrutinizing building assemblies, the class will attempt to position construction analysis so as to produce both technical knowledge and critical awareness of embedded cultural habits. The class will thus seek out an alternative understanding of the Tectonic- one that not only mirrors the realm of construction - materials, methods ,sequences, tolerances, etc.- but also embraces architectural process of expression, encompassing issues of geometry and technique; posture and character.

The Semi-public Garden June 2016 Studio Undergraduate Solo Work The neighborhood is blocked by buildings. Citizens feel pressures when walking around the concrete forest. What if the garden is open to the public but belongs to the residents. The project explores the relationship between the public and the private. The public is the place share ideas and the space to hold activities. Sharing and Communicating make the community energetic, inspiring the neighborhood with different voices. The privacy keeps residents safe, making families harmony. The project uses the neighborhood in Brooklyn, trying to create voids and paths in the block to differentiate the public and the private.

The Pavilion Undergraduate Thesis February, 2016 Yangshi, Loudi, Hunan Solo Work Urbanization is still an issue in China. The research is undergoing to explore how urban function fits in the village. Library, Concert Hall, Moving Theater and etc., are all these functions people want in the village? Culture between cities and villages isolates themselves, not to mention the tradition house in the remote village. The Shi Sha Tang is one of them, like the peaceful island abandoned by human. Sun casts the shadow on the ruin wall. The moss grows in the courtyard. A few elders still live in there for the embrace of childhood. The project wants to keep the nature of the tradition house and activate the building itself, building a place belong to the village.
