Nomads Are World-Record Breakers The Fareham Nomads mixed relay team made a splash by breaking the World Record in the 4 x 100m medley event - by nearly two seconds. Joanna Corben, Martin Bennell, Noémie Plumridge and Johannes Berbers smashed the record in the 160+ age category in a time of 4.22.40 at the British Masters Long Course Championships. The team added this to their European and British records which they set at the British Masters Short Course Championships last year. Assistant coach Stewart Crowe said: ‘This was an outstanding result from a group of outstanding individual athletes who combined to become the best in the world.’ Nomads had an outstanding event at the Plymouth Life Centre achieving 10 gold, 11 silver and 2 bronze medals in individual events, and 6 gold and 2 silvers in relay events. The 12 swimmers swam 38 events and claimed 21 masters personal best times and 13 Hampshire County Records in the process. Overall the swimming club ranked 10th out of 202 clubs, a superb result for a small masters team. Crowe added: ‘Most of those that attended the British Championships will next race again at the Hampshire County Masters Championships on Sunday, where I anticipate more record breaking performances.’

Johannes Berbers, Noemie Plumridge, Martin Bennell and Joanna Corben boasted four gold medals in the 50m, 100m and 200m backstroke, as well as the 400 Individual Medley. And youngest Nomad competitor Clive Marquis achieved silver in the 200 Fly in a time of 2.25.78. Johannes Berbers achieved a staggering 10 medals from 10 events, racing in the 40-44 age category. While Helen Andrews, competing in the 50-54 age category, claimed her first ever British masters title in the 800m freestyle in a time of 13.09.28. The mixed 4 x 200m and 4 x 50m freestyle team in the 120+ age group, made up of Johannes Berbers, Andy Green, Noémie Plumridge and Laura Molyneaux, proudly took home gold medals in both of these events. Swanwick Lakes nature reserve turns 25 This year Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust and NATS, the UK air traffic control service, are celebrating 25 wild years at Swanwick Lakes nature reserve. The nature reserve and popular education centre were created through an innovative partnership between NATS and the Wildlife Trust that began in the early 1990s when NATS moved their base to the site of the old brick works at Bursledon. Together the organisations turned what was an abandoned clay pit into one of the Trust’s most popular reserves and a haven for wildlife and people to enjoy. Today, Swanwick Lakes is now a beautiful oasis for nature in an otherwise urban area. A mixture of woodland, lakes and meadows attracts a large array of species. The majority of the site is woodland, and during the spring it come alive with bird song and woodpeckers drumming as a multiplicity of birds settle down to nest. Rare species such as marsh tits also thrive at this reserve. Come summer the meadows are in full bloom; they hum and buzz with thousands of insects. North East Meadow is adorned with orchids and knapweed, as well as marbled white, meadow brown and gatekeeper butterflies. In the woodlands elusive white admiral, purple emperor and silver-washed fritillary butterflies flit between the trees. The lakes and ponds around the site are prime locations for dragonflies and damselflies, including unusual species such as the downy emerald.

A loyal and hardworking group of volunteers who help Wildlife Trust staff with everything from tree felling as part of our woodland management, leading school groups and family events to helping us maintain our wildlife garden. Together they gave an amazing 3445 hours of volunteer help last year! Their work helps both wildlife and people too - over two miles of paths around the lakes and woods with over a mile of surfaced marked trails make it a great place to visit and explore at this time of year. Victory for veterans at new charity regatta Armed Forces veterans pitted their sailing skills against each other at the launch of a charity’s new racing division. More than 50 injured veterans took to the water to compete at a special 3-day regatta held at Gosport near Portsmouth last week. In partnership with Help for Heroes and The Endeavour Fund, the event was organised by Turn to Starboard, the charity set up to help those affected by military operations by taking them sailing. Many of those taking part in the sailing event had barely set foot on a yacht, yet made the decision to brave the waves and learn new skills. Beneficiary Lt Cdr Jay Saunders said: “A couple of weeks ago I was hiding in my bed, but this regatta had me up and chasing a win I would never have dreamed of. Thanks to Turn to Starboard I discovered that my PTSD can’t take control of me when I’m sailing and the racing element has enabled me to turn my anxiety into adrenaline, and of the good sort. I found my competitive nature returning and I needed to get to the front of the fleet. I’m so thankful that Turn to Starboard has helped me find a part of myself that I thought that I had lost.” Over the duration of the regatta the crew were led by professional skippers on eight racing yachts to compete in three races around the Solent. Under clear skies and enjoying gusts of 10 to 15 knots, ‘Team International’ skippered their way to the finish line at least eight boat lengths ahead of their nearest friendly rival ‘Team ABF Soldier’s Charity’. ‘Team Endeavour’ asserted their dominance over the rest on the fleet to finish in third place.

The event was followed by an awards ceremony at Haslar Marina with trophies for the winners and runners up. Turn to Starboard Chief Executive, Shaun Pascoe, said: “We’re really excited about the launch of our new racing division this summer. The sport of sailing helps individuals affected by operations to get active outdoors, regain confidence and learn new skills to help start new careers in the marine industry. With support from Help for Heroes and The Endeavour Fund, we are able to show people how sailing is a great way to get active outdoors and enjoy the physical and social benefits the sport can provide.” Set up just four years ago, Turn to Starboard has helped more than 1200 injured veterans with many gaining sailing qualifications to start new careers in the marine industry. The Falmouth-based charity is aiming to raise £100,000 towards a new training boat by the end of this year.

‘Every One Remembered’

Hedge End Women’s Institute

As a valued supporter of the Royal British Legion, I hope you’re already aware of the ‘Every One Remembered’ initiative. Now we are reaching out to you to ask for your help ensuring all Commonwealth Service men and women who fell during World War One are remembered by the end of the centenary. If you can circulate our call to action amongst your colleagues, friends, clients – to whomever you feel is appropriate – we would hugely appreciate your support. If you would also like to share on social media we are happy to provide some suggested content if this would be helpful.

At our monthly meeting in August, Gwen Appleton discuss ‘Growing old disgracefully’, and on Friday 31st the members of the Hedge End WI celebrated 100 years since the formation of the Hampshire County Federation of WI’s with an afternoon tea at the 2000 Centre.

In 2014, we at The Royal British Legion were inspired by the words of a school child visiting a war cemetery in Belgium, she wrote to us and said “I know that not everyone can be remembered as individuals, but I felt it was a shame for some people to have dozens of poppies and crosses while others had no one left to remember them.”

On 25th September, our monthly meeting will be our birthday meeting and we will be entertained by Carol Watson who will tell us all about ‘Traversing the Alps’. The annual skittles evening has been booked for Thursday 27th September at the British Aerospace Club in Hamble. The tickets are only £10 and there is a variety of meals to be chosen. The Hedge End WI won the Group round of the General Knowledge Quiz and will be representing the Hamble Valley Group in the finals in October.

Everyone Remembered is that place, where all 1.1million Commonwealth Service men and women who fell during World War One will be individually remembered, including any who died from war related injuries up to two years after the conflict ended.

26th October at 7.30pm, there will be a fashion show by Travelling Trends at the 2000 Centre. After the parade of models there will be many items to try on and buy. Tickets will be only £3 and all profits will be given to charity.

Debbie And Dolly Join The Ninth Women’s Cancer Challenge Debbie and Dolly Walker are getting on their bikes and taking positive action in the fight against breast, ovarian and cervical cancers. Debbie who has just handed over her role as President of Bishop’s Waltham Rotary Club is now tackling her next challenge along with her Niece, Dolly, they are part of an amazing group of women tackling the ninth Women V Cancer challenge. They will be challenging themselves as part of a women-only team of cyclists riding through rural Rajasthan in India to support the work of three charities: Breast Cancer Care, Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust and Ovarian Cancer Action. Previous Women V Cancer cycle challenges in Kenya, India, Cuba, China, Africa, Vietnam & Cambodia, the UK and Brazil have raised over £9 million for the three charities. Debbie previously took part in the Kenya, China and Brazil rides and has raised over £10,000 in the past and for Dolly this is her first ride challenge. Women of all ages and all cycling abilities from across the UK are invited to join the adventure in November 2018. The group will cycle around 450kms in just 5 days – both on and off road – experiencing rural India at its most raw and colourful. What to do with a loved ones ashes? When I joined the company in 2005 we had a cupboard with ashes dating back to 1970…and we still do. In fact in 2018 we now have 2 cupboards. 73% of all funerals A H Freemantle completed last year were cremations. For some, the ashes of a loved one hold no meaning while for others, they are the very embodiment of the person who has died. If you have chosen a cremation funeral the next step is to decide on what to do with the ashes. So here are some ideas for you: A scattering – Scatter them in the person’s favourite place. Be aware some grounds such as cemeteries or private land require permission to scatter ashes. Do it carefully and remember to stand upwind! Bury / Inter them – Put simply this is placing the ashes somewhere permanent such as a cemetery or above ground chamber (columbarium). With a bang – Loved ones ashes can be placed in a firework for a colourful / loud send off. In America a company called ‘Holy Smoke’ will even turn ashes into ammunition!

Made shiny! – Want some bling to remember your loved one? Ashes can be turned into jewellery, hand-blown glass or stained glass that you can appreciate and admire for a long time. Plant them - The ashes are mixed with nutrients and placed in an urn used to grow a tree in the persons memory.

Losing a loved one is often a gut-wrenching experience and it can be difficult to figure out the right way to remember them and honour their last wishes if known. Average Geoff What a belter of a Summer we’re having the past few weeks! Hopefully you’ve all been making the most of it and taking the opportunity to get outside and be active. This month is coming to you from my new home gym. Not everyone can make it to a gym so home gyms can be a great alternative. It can be as simple as a couple of pieces of equipment that can be stored easily such as a portable pull up bar or dip bars. Instead of my normal workouts, this month has a bit of a different format. I want to bring you some movements that a beginner may not typically do and show you firstly how to do them unassisted and secondly, how to scale them if you’re not quite ready for the full movement. They are all great movements to really up your game and help you build superb bodyweight strength and lean muscle. The three movements are the pull up, the dip and the L-sit.

SCALE IT The movement is the same but we’re going to use our band to help reduce the force of gravity by lifting us up. Holding one end, throw the other end over the bar and grab it. Loop one end through the other to secure it and allow it to hand down.

In order to help scale the pull up and dip I use a resistance band, which is basically a massive elastic band. They work in these movements to support your bodyweight and reduce the effect of gravity against you in the movement, making it easier to complete the movement. You can get a range of these bands in different tensions from numerous sources on the internet and in sports shops. To give you an idea of repetitions, aim for 10 reps of each movement or ten seconds in the case of the L-sit. Go for 3 sets with 2-3 minutes of rest between sets. Once you can do each movement with a resistance band for the above sets and reps, use a thinner band until you can do it unassisted. PULL UPS

Grip the bar with and overhand grip (palms facing away from you) slightly shoulder width apart. Clench your butt and imagine you’re trying to hold a coin there... don’t drop your dinner money!! Make sure not to swing about and stay tight.

Place one foot inside the bottom of the hanging loop and jump/ step up to the bar. You can put your seconds foot into the band at this point if you like but it’s down to preference. Keeping your legs straight, go through the steps in the unassisted pull up. Once you can get 10 pull ups with this band, progress to a thinner band. Once you can do this with the thinnest band, shoot for the unassisted and do a little victory dance!

DIP

If you are using moveable dip bars, position them shoulder width apart. Step up to your bars or dip station. Using a neutral grip with palms towards you, come off the ground and straighten your arms, locking them out. As in the pull up, clench your butt cheeks and keep hold of your metaphorical money!

Pull your shoulders down and back away from your ears. Imagine a turtle popping its head out of its shell. Try to visualise pulling the bar down towards your body and keep your elbows back. Imagine that you’re trying to put your elbows in your back pockets. Keep pulling until your chin is above the bar. If it isn’t above the bar, it’s not a full repetition. 20

Keep your shoulders back and down and don’t allow them to shrug. Keeping your head and neck neutral, lower your body down until your arms are at 90 degrees, inhaling as you go. Your shoulders can come just lower than your elbows but no further. Push yourself back up and exhale until you reach the starting position. SCALE IT Take a band and place either end over each bar, leaving a fair bit of slack. Place your hands on top of the ends of the bands to secure them in place. Lift yourself up as in the unassisted dip. You can place your feet

HEALTH & WELLBEING (big muscles on the front of your legs above your knees) towards your hips. Make sure to keep your head and neck neutral and don’t hold your breath. Hold this position for as long as you can with good form.

FOOD

Buckwheat Pancakes in one or both lengths of the band, depending on how much assistance you need. If you’re using moveable dip bars you may need to do this with your knees instead of your feet. Perform the movement as in the unassisted dip and progress as in the pull up.

L-SIT

Set up on your dip bars with locked out arms. Push your shoulders down and back and squeeze those cheeks!

Feeling fruity after all this sunshine so decided to try something new by using buckwheat flour. Sold by the bucket load in health food shops and online so pretty easy to find. Ditch the lame cereal for some of these fluffy pancakes that are even vegan if that’s your thing. Ingredients: 1/2 cup buckwheat flour 1/2 tsp baking powder 1/2 tsp baking soda 2 tbsp maple syrup/sweetener of choice 1 tsp lemon juice 1/2 - 3/4 cup of milk of choice (oat, almond etc) Pinch salt Method: Mix all the dry ingredients in a bowl and then add the wet to the bowl. Mix together until combined, adding more milk if the mixture is too thick. Spoon about 1 & 1/2 tablespoons of the mixture for each pancake into an oiled pan on a medium heat. When bubbles start to form and burst, flip them over to finish cooking. Plate up and top with what you fancy. I added flax seeds, flaked almonds and berries

Southampton joins forces for Cultural City Key Southampton institutions including the University of Southampton, Solent University, Southampton Cultural Development Trust and Southampton City Council came together at the Cultural City event last week to workshop and debate the potential of a bid for City of Culture 2025, and concluded that ‘The time is now right for Southampton’. The conference galvanized support from a variety of stakeholders in the city, identifying what is unique about Southampton, existing local strengths to build upon, as well as areas for investment and development for the potential bid. Keynote speaker, Rosie Millard OBE, chair of Hull City of Culture 2017 said, “I really wish the Southampton team all the best for the bid, it is a prize really worth having. It’s been transformative – since 2014 Hull has had £2 billion in investment, 800 jobs have been created and the city has been visited by 5 million people. The perception of Hull has completely changed, it been transformative for the nation, put particularly for the young people in Hull. Fareham College win Apprenticeship Initiative Award at Constructing Excellence SECBE Awards 2018 Fareham College’s Civil Engineering Training Centre (CETC) has won the very much sought-after Apprentice Initiative Award at the annual awards dinner at The Royal Lancaster, London, where construction industry professionals waited in anticipation to learn the results following a thorough and robust judging process in all the 16 categories. CETC is a partnership between Fareham College and Solent Civil Engineering Employers Group (SCEEG). It is a simulated construction site that has been designed to give civil engineering apprentices a realistic training environment to get them site-ready. SCEEG provides governance to the apprenticeship programme and comprises employer members, associate members such as CECA, suppliers and construction companies outside of civil engineering such as Taylor Wimpey. Day-to-day, the centre is managed by a site manager and training delivered by experienced civil engineering operatives. The project supports the development of the existing workforce in a practical way that is not only cost and time efficient, but also re-engages the workforce with skills that are of value to both the individual and the employer. CETC has attracted national attention and government interest as an example of an employer led, co-designed apprenticeship. Due to the programme’s success, proposals for a new £4.1m ‘CETC 2’ campus have been awarded preliminary funding of £2.8m from Fareham College and the Solent LEP for an estimated Autumn 2019 completion. This is a practical scheme that not only addresses the skills shortage but importantly the lack of ‘suitable’ apprenticeship standards and low levels of funding available. It has achieved the right staff ratio to deliver first class training and, at an early stage, apprentices are fully aware of what is expected of them, especially in the winter months. “The Apprenticeship Initiative category, sponsored by CoTrain, seeks forward-thinking employers that actively and innovatively develop a sustainable workforce by equipping young people with skills, knowledge and confidence” explains Darren Birch, Regional Framework Manager, BAM Construction Ltd and head judge for this award. “The Civil and Engineering Training Centre (CETC) is an exemplary model of an employer-led apprenticeship programme that is co-designed to meet skills shortages and productivity issues.” The Constructing Excellence SECBE Awards are unique in their recognition of some of the best teams and organisations in the

Goodwood’s Hall wins Women’s British Open Championship On Sunday 5 August, Golf At Goodwood ambassador Georgia Hall became the Women’s British Open champion, landing her first major tournament victory. Finishing the final round at Royal Lytham and St Annes on 17 under par, the 22-yearold was two shots ahead of her nearest rival, Pornanong Phatlum of Thailand. Hall had started the round one shot behind Phatlum, but a near perfect performance, with only one bogey, saw her pick up five shots and forge clear. Dropping just three shots throughout the entire fourround competition, Hall was always in contention, but Phatlum proved an extremely tough opponent, leading overall for 54 out of the 72 holes played. Hall’s calmness under pressure and ability to get herself out of the bunkers when most-needed meant she was able to capitalise on the few mistakes made by Phatlum and emerge victorious in front of a home crowd. Talking to BBC Sport, Hall, from Bournemouth, said; “It is too good to be true. It was my goal when I was nine to win the British Open. I am so happy. I just had to stay calm and patient. There’s something incredibly magical about the coming of Autumn. After the heady, closely aired Summer days draw to a close, the sun begins to cool its glare and the leaves turn rusty and fall to the ground. One of my favourite aspects of this changing of the guard is the renewed sense of self that comes with Autumn. So many things are refreshed - for the students among us the new school year begins. Local astronaut Tim Peake launches competition to name ExoMars Rover The UK Space Agency has launched a competition to name a rover which is being sent to Mars to search for signs of Life.

Tim Peake said: “Mars is a fascinating destination, a place where humans will one day work alongside robots to gather new knowledge and search for life in our Solar System. “The ExoMars rover is a vital part of this journey of exploration and we’re asking you to become part of this exciting mission and name the rover that will scout the Martian surface.” The UK is the second largest European contributor to the ExoMars mission, behind Italy, having invested €287 million in the mission and £14 million on the instruments. Airbus Defence and Space is leading the build of the rover while the UCL Mullard Space Science Laboratory is leading on a key instrument known as the PanCam, a high resolution 3D camera which will be used to look at the terrain and rocks to try to detect signs of life.

Leicester University and Teledyne e2v are involved in work on the Raman Spectrometer with STFC RAL Space processing the data it delivers. ExoMars will be the first mission to combine the capability to move across the surface and to study Mars at depth. The rover, which is due to land on Mars in March 2021, uses solar panels to generate the required electrical power, and is designed to survive the cold Martian nights with the help of batteries and heater units.

Due to launch in August 2020 the UK-built rover is part of the European Space Agency’s ExoMars mission which will look at how Mars has evolved and whether there may be conditions for life. The ExoMars rover will be the first of its kind to travel across the Martian surface and drill down to determine if evidence of life is buried underground, protected from the destructive radiation that impinges the surface today. It will collect samples and analyse them with next-generation instruments, many designed by British engineers.

Another part of the ExoMars mission, the Trace Gas Orbiter, is already at Mars, looking for atmospheric gases that may be linked to active geological or biological processes.

Science Minister Sam Gyimah said: “Exploring the surface of another planet is what many scientists and researchers dream of and now a British-built rover will travel the surface of Mars to answer some fundamental questions, and the public can be part of this exciting new chapter by naming the rover. We want creative and bold entries – I’ll start the ball rolling with Rover McRoverface! “The ExoMars mission showcases the very best of the UK’s worldleading robotics expertise and this mission will inspire the next generation of engineers, scientists and space enthusiasts to be part of the journey as the UK continues to reach for the stars. We are truly entering the new Great British Space Age.” The competition was unveiled by British ESA astronaut Tim Peake at the Farnborough International Airshow today (Friday 20th July).

In 2014 more than 4,000 people responded to a call to name Tim Peake’s 6-month mission to the International Space Station, with Principia being chosen as the winner. The name referred to Isaac Newton’s world-changing three-part text on physics, Naturalis Principia Mathematica, describing the principal laws of motion and gravity. As well as the honour of naming the rover the winner of the competition will receive a tour for four people of the Airbus facility in Stevenage where the Mars rover is being built. The competition will run from 09:30am BST on 20th July 2018 (the “Opening Date”) to 23:59pm BST on 10th October 2018 (the “Closing Date”) inclusive. Small Changes Big Difference in Portsmouth The Lord Mayor of Portsmouth Councilor Lee Mason has put a call out to the City to Eat better, move more and help others. Cllr Mason said; “Portsmouth has higher rates of obesity than many other places in the UK and it’s causing people to die younger and have a poorer quality of life. I know that my own weight has led to health problems and I want to be an inspiration rather than a warning. If I can change my eating habits and get more active then anyone can. Cllr Mason sets his goals for the city to achieve 1 million lbs lost, 1 million miles walked and 1 million hours volunteered. “As the name of the campaign suggests, this is not about drastically altering your life but about making small changes, which we know can make a big difference. University Students Meet The Navy’s Big Guns At HMS Collingwood Students from the Defence Technical Undergraduate Scheme (DTUS) recently visited HMS Collingwood to get a hands-on experience of Weapons Engineering within the Royal Navy. The group, studying at various universities but all committed to joining the Royal Navy, visited HMS Collingwood, near Fareham, as part of a package of visits to other RN establishments, all giving them a different experience of RN life.

After briefs about Weapons Engineering in general and specifically the excellent training offered by HMS Collingwood, the group visited the Armoury where they were introduced to the General Purpose Machine Gun and other small arms, getting the feel of the personal weapons used by the sailors. They then moved on to one of the bigger guns, specifically the 4.5 inch Mark 8 Gun which is fitted to the Type 45 destroyer and is one of the Navy’s most versatile weapons. Petty Officer (PO) Alan Bates was on hand to demonstrate the procedure for loading the 37 kilogramme rounds into the gun – an operation that needs to be completed every five seconds to keep the gun firing at its optimum rate. DTUS students will join the Royal Navy at the conclusion of their university studies and visits such as these are designed to give them a flavour of what the Royal Navy can offer them, together with what it expects from them.

Bishop’s Waltham Rotary News THE LONG AND THE SHORT OF IT!

There are over 35,000 Rotary clubs in the world and they all work in a similar way: there are no administration charges; all of what is collected in donations goes directly to the chosen needy cause. In most case that will be local, but in some cases it will go to an international cause such as Polio Eradication or a relief for a natural disaster, for example. Every year, the President of these clubs change. Last year Debbie Walker, a retired local business person, was the first female President of the BW club. During her year she presided over further growth in the club taking our membership to 36 members. Just in case you were wondering: the ratio of men to women is now 9 to 28; and more ladies in the pipeline! Debbie presided over her last BW Rotary meeting, inaugurating John Natt as the next President, along with Linda Treveil as President for the following year and Mandy Tourle for the subsequent year. John is a Partner in Wilkins Kennedy Chartered Accountants, and a trustee of the Rainbow Centre. He enjoys fishing, photography and travel. John’s favourite charities for the year are Macmillan Nurses, The Rainbow Centre, and Lymphoma Action. His aspiration is to continue supporting worthy causes both in funding and assistance where required; raising the profile of Rotary and the work it does; and ensuring the members enjoy the year. Debbie’s last meeting as President, saw two new members being inaugurated into the club. Margaret Jacobs retired from running a local coach company joined the club at the same time as Sara Walker who runs Better Financial Planning in BW. Both are looking forward to contributing to Rotary goals and joining in the community spirit of the local club. A week after the exhaustion of the Carnival came KidsTreat, where our members took turns to be a Human Fruit Machine; supporting the efforts of the Town Team in providing a free day of entertainment for local children. The Northern Lights, the hottest break in town! For centuries, people have marvelled at an astounding vision in the Arctic skies; a wonder which has been attributed in folklore as a reflection of a shoal of fish, the sweep of a fox’s tail and the spirits of dancing children. This wonder, of course, is the Aurora Borealis, otherwise known as the Northern Lights. Holidays to see the Northern Lights have never been more popular, with so many destinations to choose from, where is the best place to see them. Answer, Abisko. You’ve never heard of it? That’s not entirely surprising, as while it’s arguably the finest place to see the lights, it’s also probably the least well-known, but that’s just part of the reason it’s so very special. Abisko is a tiny village in the very northern reaches of Swedish Lapland, some 150 miles within the Arctic Circle. Not far from Norway, it is located close to the Abisko National Park, which is famed for its wild terrain, craggy mountains, wildlife and sheer Nordic beauty. Visitors come to Abisko for two main reasons: in the summer, to hike under the midnight sun and in winter, to see the Aurora Borealis.

Why is Abisko the key destination for sightings?

Being one of the locations situated within the mystical-sounding Auroral Oval a ring around the geomagnetic North Pole where auroral activity is most likely to occur - it’s probably no surprise to learn that Abisko’s skies are frequently painted with the dazzling, colourful illuminations. However, it is said that of all the aurorae hotspots in the world, Abisko boasts the highest probability of sightings. This is due to several, differing factors. Firstly, its remote location means there is very little light pollution. Secondly, Abisko rarely experiences any inclement weather due to its geography; it sits within a ‘bowl of mountains’ which seemingly protects it from cloud or rain. This micro-climate also produces some prevailing winds which, together with the mountains, serve to disperse cloud cover. Hence the region enjoys greater numbers of clear nights per season, something that other locations cannot so confidently boast. There are many night time tours to choose from, two of the more popular are a photography-based Northern Lights trip, run by an expert and a visit to the Aurora Sky Station followed by a gourmet meal dining experience. However, as mentioned above, it is possible to see the lights in any dark area which is far from artificial light, so take your pick. Your nights might be covered, but you’ll need something to do during the day. Fortunately, this is another string to Abisko’s bow: the diversity of experiences that are on offer. Providing you’re wrapped up warmly and have some sturdy shoes, there are plenty of things to do in Abisko. You can explore the wilderness of frozen lakes and dramatic scenery with a local Sami guide, keeping your eyes open for indigenous wildlife.

COURGETTE AND SWEETCORN PIE Ingredients: • 4 tablespoons butter • Half of a white onion, diced • 1 cup of sweet corn • 2 large courgettes, sliced very thinly (about 4 cups) • Handful of sliced mushrooms • 1 tablespoon dried basil • 1 teaspoon dried oregano • 1/2 teaspoon salt • 12 ounces shredded cheese (I used both Mozzarella and Cheddar • 4 eggs, beaten Method: 1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Heat the butter in a large, deep skillet over medium high heat. Add the onions, courgette, and mushrooms. While the veggies saute, cut the corn kernels off the cob (or use frozen). Add them to the pan and continue to saute until the veggies are soft, 5-10 minutes. Remove from heat. 2.

Once the mixture has cooled for a few minutes, stir in the basil, oregano, salt, cheese, and the beaten egg. Line a pie pan (9-inch or larger) with parchment paper or just grease a pan with nonstick spray. Transfer the mixture to the pan. Arrange the top so the courgettes slices lay flat and look nice. Top with a little extra cheese for looks, cover with greased foil, and bake for 20 minutes. Remove foil and bake for an additional 5 minutes to brown the top. Let stand for 10-15 minutes before cutting into slices.

Ingredients: • 4 salmon filets • Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste • 4 tablespoons all-purpose flour • 4 tablespoons honey • 2 tablespoons olive oil • Zest of 1 lime For the browned butter lime sauce: • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter • 2 cloves garlic, pressed • 1 tablespoon honey • Juice of 1 lime • Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste Method: 1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. 2. To make the browned butter lime sauce, melt butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Cook, whisking constantly, until the foam subsides and the butter begins to turn a golden brown, about 3 minutes. Stir in garlic, honey and lime juice, salt and pepper, to taste; set aside. 3. Season salmon with salt and pepper, to taste. Dredge each salmon filet with 1 tablespoon flour and drizzle with 1 tablespoon honey. 4. Heat olive oil in a large oven-proof skillet over medium high heat. Working in batches, add salmon to the skillet and sear both sides until golden brown, about 1-2 minutes per side. 5. Place into oven and bake until completely cooked through, about 8-10 minutes. 6. Serve immediately with browned butter lime sauce and lime zest, if desired.

From sludge ship to flag ship the story of SS Shieldhall It was 30 years ago on 28 July 1988 that Southern Water passed ownership of an unheralded vessel that had been in service between 1980-85, to a recently formed charity. That charity was the Solent Steam Packet, and the vessel Steamship Shieldhall. Performing a very perfunctory role SS Shieldhall for Southern Water – taking treated sludge to the ‘dumping grounds’ to the east of the Isle of Wight – Shieldhall was destined for a more glamourous future role as a passenger vessel and as a flagship for the National Historic Fleet, which she continues to perform to this day.

Shieldhall marked her 30th anniversary of charitable ownership with a ‘Return to the Nab Tower’ cruise on Sat 28 July, and has a busy August and September sailing programme.

Shieldhall had been constructed in 1955 by the Lobnitz Shipyard in Renfrew, Glasgow, on the banks of the Clyde, where she was to perform a sludge disposal role for the Glasgow Corporation. Daily trips past Garroch Head on the Isle of Bute to the ‘dumping grounds’ where the water was ’70 fathoms deep’ lasted some 8 hours. During the summer months Shieldhall would welcome groups identified by the Corporation who could enjoy trips ‘Doon the Watter’ – doubtless enjoying the sea air before retiring to the Shieldhall saloon shortly before her tanks were emptied. Replacing an earlier vessel of the same name, Shieldhall was built with twin powered triple expansion steam engines and scotch boilers – rather than diesel engines which were fast becoming the norm. Some 30 years later this was to be her saving grace, for when Southern Water announced she was to be scrapped, a number of heritage enthusiasts recognised the rarity of what was to be found on Shieldhall ‘below decks.’ There was still the matter of saving Shieldhall, for Southern Water needed to be paid the sum of £20k, which represented Shieldhall’s scrap value. The Southampton University Industrial Archaeology Group (SUIAG) and the Council’s Museum Service, led by Nigel Overton, were leading lights in Shieldhall’s preservation, together with a team of dedicated watchkeepers who undertook duties on board Shieldhall. These lasted 24hrs a day for 3 years – with tours of the ship undertaken hourly day and night - whilst funds for Shieldhall’s purchase were raised. During this period Shieldhall remained under the ownership of Southern Water, with the understanding that she could be brought back into service at any time if required. Such dedication was rewarded and after her purchase in 1988 the volunteers proudly saw Shieldhall make her maiden voyage for the Solent Steam Packet on 9th June 1991.

Shieldhall will pass the cruise ships departing Southampton in August and September.

Today Shieldhall’s fine lines, her original engine room, boiler room and bridge are in high demand for film producers and documentary makers, and she has been the star of movies including Angela’s Ashes and Grimsby, and many documentaries about the Titanic, where many of her features are similar, albeit on a smaller scale. A far cry from her origins as a humble sludge boat! Following completion of a HLF project ‘Saving Shieldhall: Conservation in Action’ in 2017, the Solent Steam Packet charity can look forward to more years of summer sailings in the Solent. Shieldhall continues to be run by a number of volunteers, a mixture

Taste Of Wickham Festival Sunday 9Th September 2018 10am - 4pm The stalls are booked, the entertainers are rehearsing, the raffle tickets on sale and prizes arranged, volunteer helpers recruited, (but see below!) and fingers crossed for good weather. Wickham is almost ready to welcome visitors to its fifth celebratory festival. This year there will be a record number of stalls – well over 60, showing off local businesses and organisations – crammed into the picturesque medieval Square. Each business shelters under its striped square gazebo, which creates a festival atmosphere to the day right from the start. The programme of children’s activities and entertainments, live music, local groups performing their musical and dancing shows keeps the audiences of all ages amused and entertained. And then there are the goats – always a popular centre of attraction! We hope and expect that the crowds who attend each year – and the many who come every year! - will enjoy the day once again. If you have not been before, where were you? You have missed a (free) treat! There is lots here for people of all ages – and their dogs. Parking is eased by the (also free) Park and Ride scheme – so popular last year that the number of buses has now been increased to speed up the process. Once again the organisers are hugely indebted to Southern Cooperative who sponsor the event and support the ever-popular programme of cookery demonstrations in the temporary kitchen in the marquee. It is also rumoured that this year a demonstration of cocktail-making is to be added! WHAT’S ON HEDGE END WOMEN’S INSTITUTE On 24th July, Dan Allen entertained us with a talk entitled ‘What did you do in the war Granny?’ Also, the Hedge End WI had a stall at the Hedge End carnival, where we sold cakes and handmade assorted goods. At our August monthly meeting on 28th, Gwen Appleton will discuss ‘Growing old disgracefully’. The annual skittles evening has been booked for Thursday 27th September. Tickets will be only £10 and on sale at the August meeting. The Hedge End WI won the Group round of the General Knowledge Quiz and will be representing the Hamble Valley Group in the finals in October. Other dates to be aware of are; 31st August when there will be a free historical tea party at 2.30pm, catered by Jackie Atkinson.
