Southampton hosts march against sexual violence The rally raised more than £350, which will be split between Southampton Rape Crisis and Southampton Women’s Aid. Aria Alamalhodaei was one of the events organisers. She said: “In England the conviction rate for rapists is 6%, which is embarrassingly low. “One in three women worldwide get raped in their lifetime. It’s like an unspoken epidemic.” Southampton is the only city in the country to see a rise in sexual assaults in recent years. HMS Collingwood’s 24 hour padathon

A squad of 12 boxers from HMS Collingwood’s team continuously punched pads for 24 hours all in the name of charity. The team made up of both Navy and Army personnel kicked off their day long challenge on Friday morning with a view to landing 50,000 punches whilst raising money for the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity (RNRMC) and local children’s charity KIDS. Working in rotation, the boxers spent their

time in the ring boxing in 5 minute bouts and then holding the pads for fellow team mates. The 24 hour Padathon concept was thought up by Head Coach Petty Officer Physical Trainer Daz Hoare in a bid to demonstrate core naval values of courage, determination, commitment and

Boxing appears to run in the blood as Daz’s father Roy Hoare, an ex-submariner who used to box as well, set the team a final challenge upon completion of the Padathon. The final boxer in the Ring was to complete as many press ups as possible in a minute and Roy would donate a £1 each. That boxer was Leading Engineering Technician Submariner Liam Price. Remarking on his involvement in the Padathon, Liam said: “I have been boxing on and off for ten years. I only began boxing for the Navy in July this year. It’s a great event to participate in and a good warm up to what will be a busy boxing season for me.” In total, the squad surpassed their target of 50,000 punches by achieving a total over 200,000. So far they have raised over £500 for the two charities. The total continues to climb as sponsorship money comes in. On completion of the challenge the team enjoyed a complimentary breakfast from the Harvester in Fareham.

fighting spirit. Commenting at the event Daz said: “It’s a real endurance challenge for the lads; usually they box in the ring for 2 minutes so boxing for 5 is not easy. It’s a bit of fortitude for the lads but its all for a good cause. The 24hr Padathon is the first of its kind to be held at the base. This was the third epic challenge that Daz has organised. He had previously organised a 48hr cycle ride and 24hr punching bag challenge.

Portsmouth man publishes horror novel ‘The Roots of Evil’ Eric Barber works his way through the terms and conditions of his father’s will, to secure a future fortune. But, in a remote village, the sins of lust, greed and envy of the inhabitants are disturbed by strange occurrences and disembodied evil that give way to shockingly graphic violence, intense horror and gore-laden revenge. David E. Gates follows up his first published non-fiction novel, Access Denied, a deeply personal account of him becoming a father and then finding out several years later that his daughter wasn’t his, with his first Horror fiction, The Roots of Evil. Karen Moore said: “A well written novel with really likeable characters. A thoroughly enjoyable book that had me gripped with its twists and turns and funny goings on in the village. Would happily recommend.” David said: “I wrote my first book, Access Denied, to show the world the incompetence and injustice of the Child Support Agency. “My second book, a work of fiction, was re-discovered when reviewing previously written stories and items for

Fareham charity receive cheque in time for Christmas from fundraising events held at the Phase 2 Training establishment. One of these events was the recent ‘Norfolk Trophy’ Christmas Relay which LPT Carley organised and saw them collect over £500 for The Rainbow Centre. This coupled with money raised during small fundraisers and raffles at the Navy Elite Boxing Championship in March enabled Collingwood to present a cheque to the Centre for £1219.68 just in time for Christmas. During their visit, Scouse and Captain Dainton received a tour of the facilities and had the opportunity to meet the children that the Centre helps through Conductive Education. Remarking about his visit to the Centre, Scouse said: “I have known about the charity for a while now and have helped with previous fundraising events, but this was the first time I have been able to see first hand what the Centre does. “It’s just amazing. I felt so humbled. I am already planning on doing more fundraising next year for The Rainbow Centre.” Last

Portsmouth to host two years of spectacular America’s Cup World Series Racing On 25 November 2014, Sir Keith Mills GBE announced that America’s Cup Racing is to return to British waters when the America’s Cup World Series (ACWS) takes place in Portsmouth 23-26 July 2015 and 21–24 July 2016. Sir Keith has been central to the delivery of some of the UK’s greatest sporting events, most recently as Deputy Chairman of London 2012 and Chairman of ‘Invictus Games’. The ACWS Portsmouth will be managed by TEAMORIGIN Events, a company set up by Sir Keith Mills in 2007. Speaking during the launch event at London’s OXO Tower, Sir Keith said: “I’m passionate about bringing world-class sporting events to Great Britain, and delighted that America’s Cup World Series racing will be coming to Portsmouth. This will not just be a spectacular sporting event, it will also showcase Portsmouth, the South Coast and Great Britain on a global stage, delivering economic benefit to the City and the sponsors involved. The series will attract huge crowds to watch the exhilarating racing and we plan to give the event a festival feel bringing activities and entertainment for all. “Our plans are for more than two action packed long week-ends. We are also putting together a three year activation programme running right up until the end of the 35th America’s Cup in 2017. We look forward to delivering a world class sporting event for Great Britain.”

16 | The LOOP www.loopmagazine.net

The ACWS is the preliminary race series of the 35th America’s Cup, consisting of eight to ten regattas taking place around the world during 2015 and 2016. All America’s Cup teams will compete in the series and their overall placement will affect the seeding and starting score they take into the America’s Cup Qualifier events in 2017. “The America’s Cup World Series events in Portsmouth in 2015 and 2016 are an opportunity for British fans to watch world class America’s Cup teams compete and of course support Ben Ainslie Racing as they compete on home waters,” said Harvey Schiller, the Commercial Commissioner of the America’s Cup. “I know Ben joins all the competitors in their goal to bring the America’s Cup back to their home country and racing in the America’s Cup World Series is a first step towards that end.” Ben Ainslie Racing (BAR) is the British challenger for the 35th America’s Cup, and have their home base in Portsmouth. Team Principal and four-time Olympic gold medallist, Sir Ben Ainslie said: “A key part of BAR’s plans was to bring America’s Cup racing to Great Britain and I would like to thank Sir Keith and his team for making those plans become a reality. The last ACWS was a game changer for the sport of sailing, the racing was entertaining and brought in the crowds. The new foiling AC45s are going to be faster and even more exciting than the previous generation and we promise to provide an event experience like you have never seen before – come and cheer us on!”

The City of Portsmouth has a significant role to play and the event will encompass most of the City’s existing visitor destinations including HMS Warrior and Victory, the Mary Rose Museum, the Spinnaker Tower, Gunwharf Quays and Southsea Common. Spectators will enjoy three days of racing, including practice racing on the Friday and then two races on Saturday and two races on ‘Super Sunday Final’. Speaking at the launch, The Leader of Portsmouth Council Cllr Donna Jones said: “We’re delighted to welcome America’s Cup World Series Racing to Portsmouth for the next two years. Portsmouth enjoys its esteemed maritime history and BAR bringing their base to the City has already brought a great sense of anticipation. The ACWS has a proven record of attracting huge spectator numbers to competing venues, and it will provide a massive boost to our marine and maritime industry and bring economic benefit to Portsmouth. We welcome visitors from everywhere to watch the world-class sailing, and support Ben Ainslie Racing on home waters.” The events will be funded by a combination of private investment, sponsorship, suppliers and media partnerships. Previous ACWS events have been commercially successful and the ambition is to grow the value of the events by offering sponsors branding and visibility, media impact, hospitality for clients and employees, and tickets for public entertainment. Speaking at the launch, BAR Chairman Sir Charles Dunstone outlined the commercial opportunities of the ACWS in Portsmouth: “Sport is big business. The last America’s Cup saw more than 150 companies involved in significant sponsorships or supplier partnerships with the event or competing teams. The last time the ACWS came to Britain was Plymouth in 2011 and we saw 150,000 live spectators and the economic value and media impact of the event was estimated at £60m. By securing the commercial and

marketing rights of these events we can offer a wider and more diverse range of opportunities to businesses and media to get involved, generate value and gain benefit from what will be an incredible sporting spectacle. “ One of the key objectives of the organisers of ACWS Portsmouth will be to bring the action to the public with ‘free-to-view’ areas in the Race Village where spectators can enjoy the atmosphere, and watch the racing. There will also be additional opportunities to buy tickets for specific attractions, prime seating areas, exhibitions and hospitality. Further ticketing information will be released in the New Year.

We understand it’s about feeling good about yourself, being able to relax, getting a bit pampered … and, of course, walking out with a fantastic haircut that suits your look and your lifestyle. Welcome to Hair Ott, where we go out of our way to be friendly, share our insider tips and find the style just for you. We love it when clients say things like, “Lovely coffee, great head and shoulder massage,” because it means they’ve had a brilliant all-round experience. (Did we mention our salons offer a complimentary head and shoulder massage every time you come in?) And, as well as being bang on-trend (we try), we’re human too. We understand that however great our work, you can struggle sometimes in your bathroom trying to look your absolute best. So we offer blow-dry lessons and free advice on everything from techniques to products. Just ask! Our products are so good you get a money-back guarantee. We listen carefully to what you’d like. We won’t leave you with a complex, fussy style if you’re an ‘out-ofbed-and-out-the-door-in-5-minutes’ kind of person. On the other hand, if you love spending an hour on your hair every morning, that’s great: we can design something exclusively for you. ‘Best Wishes’ this St. Valentine’s Day

St. Valentine’s Day is celebrated each year on 14th February and is observed in many countries around the world. The day was first associated with romantic love following a poem by Geoffrey Chaucer in the late Middle Ages. In the 18th century, it evolved into an occasion when lovers expressed their affection for each other by giving handmade cards, flowers and chocolates. As the popularity of Valentine’s Day grew, cards began to be mass produced, with over 60,000 cards being sent in 1835.

Nowadays, just under half of the UK population send Valentine’s cards with an estimated 25 million cards sent and £1.3 billion spent. Why not visit ‘Best Wishes’ to find that special card for your Valentine! ‘Best Wishes’ works closely with many of the local businesses, and this Valentine’s, is teaming up with ‘Barrington’s Deli’ to offer the chance to win a hamper worth £50. Congratulations to Shirley Hunt from Fareham who won our competition featured in the last edition of ‘The Loop’.

Win a £50 Valentine’s Hamper ‘Best Wishes of Bishop’s Waltham’, in partnership with ‘Barringtons Deli’, are offering one lucky reader the chance to win a Valentine’s hamper worth £50. All wrapped up at the Christmas Fair

Christmas was kicked off in style at Hook-with-Warsash Academy last month with a fabulous festive fair full of Christmas treats. There was a fantastic range of delights to keep every Christmas shopper happy including children’s toys, books, a wine tombola and even a chance to meet the busy man himself: Father Christmas. All visitors were keep entertained at the fair with a wonderful range of activities including face-painting, balloon-modelling

and cookie decorating. There was even an opportunity for visitors to make their own Christmas decorations at the arts and crafts stall. Little shoppers were given an extra hand to get themselves organised for Christmas with a special mums’ and dads’ present stall with wrapping facilities provided so that all secrets can be kept under-wraps until the big day. Refreshments were also on hand to motivate tired shoppers along with Christmas carols sang by children from year 2 and there was even a play area with a ball pit for children to play in. Mrs Willoughby, Headteacher of Hook-withWarsash Academy, said: “The fair was an enormous success this year with a wonderful range of activities for everyone to enjoy. “Every year this event is organised by the PTFA and supported by helping parents and staff. Funds raised from events such as these will allow the school to invest in quality resources for the pupils to enjoy. “We would like to say an enormous thank you to everyone involved in making the day such a success.”

Collingwood hopes for repeat success Military personnel at HMS Collingwood have completed a 50 mile charity relay competition with hope of winning the trophy for the fastest team for the consecutive year. Leading Physical Trainer ‘Scouse’ Carley took charge of the Phase 2 training establishment’s entry into the Fleet-wide event known as the ‘Norfolk Trophy’. Each team to enter must run 1x50 mile in a relay fashion to accrue the fastest overall time in a bid to win. The Collingwood team of over 70 runners are hoping to beat the establishment’s winning time last year of 5 hours, 27 minutes and 58 seconds with a time of 6 hours, 41 minutes and 43 seconds. In the same style as the previous year, those participating this time were invited to run in Christmas themed attire whilst fundraising for The Rainbow Centre. On the start line to witness the event beginning, was Captain Steve Dainton CBE RN, Commanding Officer of HMS Collingwood. The first runner of the day was the new First Lieutenant, Lieutenant Commander Mike Long, who after his mile remarked: “It was a very chilly morning but well worth the small amount of discomfort for a local charity that does a massive amount for children and adults that will last a lifetime.” Also in attendance from The Rainbow Centre was Jessica Greenwood, Community Fundraiser, who

commented: “The support we receive from Collingwood is always great and I was happy to be invited to see the relay begin.” The ‘Norfolk Trophy’ is the shore side adaptation of the ‘Mike Till Trophy’ challenge. The ‘Mike Till Trophy’ is run each year in memory of Mike Till, who died whilst serving on HMS Sheffield during the Falklands Conflict in 1982. In total, the event raised £519.68 for The Rainbow Centre.

The Complete History of Comedy (abridged) Written and Directed by Reed Martin & Austin Tichenor Following a hugely successful, critically acclaimed season at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2014 the Reduced Shakespeare Company will set out to reduce the UK to tears of laughter in Spring 2015. Yes that’s right, the bad boys of abridgement will finally tackle the subject they were born to reduce. From the highbrow to the low, The Complete History of Comedy (abridged) covers comedy through the ages, from Aristophanes and Shakespeare to Vaudeville and Charlie Chaplin. The Complete History of Comedy (abridged) is far more affordable than tickets to an amusement park, but you’ll still come away with the same feeling of nausea and motion sickness. From cavemen telling “Rock Rock” jokes to Chris Rock and everything in-between, the Company leave no joke untold as they deconstruct the entire history of comedy in 90 rollicking minutes.

The Reduced Shakespeare Company is a three-man comedy troupe that takes long, serious subjects and reduces them to short, sharp comedies. Since 1981, ‘The Bad Boys of Abridgement’ have created nine stage shows, two television specials, several failed TV pilots and numerous radio pieces – all of which have been performed, seen, heard and translated into Klingon the world over. The company’s first three shows, The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged), The Complete History of America (abridged) and The Bible: The Complete Word of God (abridged) enjoyed a nine-year run at the Criterion Theatre in Piccadilly Circus. Not only were they London’s longest-running comedies, but at one point the Reduced Shakespeare Company had more shows running in the West End than Andrew Lloyd Webber. The company were last seen on a four month t+our of the UK and Ireland with The

Bible: The Complete Word of God (abridged) at the start of 2014. Before that a whirlwind eight month tour of The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged) played to packed houses throughout the UK and London’s West End throughout 2013. Prior to this the “other RSC” were wowing the UK with their highly successful Complete World of Sports (abridged), which toured the country before completing a season in London’s West End during the 2012 Olympics. The Complete History of Comedy (abridged) comes to the Berry Theatre in Hedge End on Friday 6 March. www. theberrytheatre.co.uk www.reducedshakespeare.com formation

I just thought I’d email you to let you know that I’ve had a fantastic response to my adverts in the first couple of issues of ‘The Loop’! Financially, I’ve had well over 1000% return on my investment which in itself is excellent, but I’d go as far as to say ‘The Loop’ magazine can take a lot of the credit for the most successful start of the year I’ve ever had! Many thanks to all at ‘The Loop’ magazine. I and all at Rubbish Clearance and Waste Removal are looking forward to the next edition coming to print! Yours, Jim Gildea

Mandy’s New York Marathon A Babcock employee from Lee-on-the Solent successfully conquered the New York Marathon (NYM) earlier in November. Mandy Chalkley, a Senior Specialist based at HMS Collingwood, completed the epic 26.2 mile race around New York in five hours and fifteen minutes. The NYM was Mandy’s first attempt at this long distance race and saw her and fifty thousand other runners follow a course around the famous boroughs of NY including Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens and Harlem. She competed in the race as a personal challenge. Mandy, who began running just over four years ago in a bid to get in shape remarked: “I noticed I was out of breath from just climbing the stairs so I joined a local Boot Camp class and also began running. “After three unsuccessful attempts to enter the London Marathon, a friend suggested the NYM as it seemed a lot easier to enter. “I have officially supported the London Marathon before but it doesn’t compare to the support and atmosphere I received in NY. On each corner there was live music, gospel

Why put off to tomorrow, what you can do today?

Taxpayers need to file their 2014 tax returns by 31st January 2015. But despite the best efforts of HM Revenue & Customs, taxpayers insist on leaving tax return preparation until the last minute. This coincides with the festive winter period which means nothing gets done in the month up until 2 January. This leaves less time to file and pay any tax owed before the 31 January 2015 deadline. The main advantages of filing a tax return early are as follows. Peace of Mind With your tax return completed and submitted early you can relax and enjoy the holiday period without a tax cloud looming over you. Cash flow management Early filing of your tax return, gives you time to plan for the tax bill and to manage your cash flow. If you pay your tax bill late, HMRC will charge you interest and late payment surcharges of up to 10%. Another benefit of filing early is that if your tax liability is less than £3,000 and you submit your tax return by 30th December 2014, you can choose to have your tax liability collected through your PAYE tax code which means it will be deducted from your wages or pension over the following year. Tax payments aren’t accelerated Even if you file your tax return early, you need only pay the tax liability by the normal due dates of 31st January 2015 and

if applicable, 31st July 2015 Tax refunds are made quickly If you file your tax return early, you should receive any tax refund you are due fairly soon after you’ve submitted it; HMRC do not wait until 31st January to pay you. Therefore, if you suspect you have overpaid tax and are due a refund, you should really prepare your tax return as soon as possible. Time If your affairs have changed this year and you have, losses or a significant amount of additional income, then preparing your return early can gives you the time to consider any tax planning opportunities which could lead to tax savings. Having plenty of time to prepare your return reduces the risk of errors being made, because you aren’t rushing to get it finished. Contacting HM Revenue & Customs Getting hold of HM Revenue & Customs is difficult at times, but it’s even more difficult around the tax return deadline. Avoid leaving your tax affairs until December or later; just in case you need to speak to them and can’t get through. If you are due a tax refund, you’re also likely to experience a longer turnaround time if you file your return during their peak times. Penalties HMRC have changed the penalty regime for late tax returns, and these are now significantly more than they used to be.

For example, the initial £100 penalty used to be reduced if you paid the tax on time or was capped to your tax liability. But the £100 penalty is now automatic. If your tax return is more than three months late, £10 daily penalties start to accumulate up to a maximum of £900. A penalty of the higher of £300 or 5% of your tax due is then charged if your return is 6 months late and again if it becomes over 12 months late. And all of these penalties are in addition to one another; rather than in place of. This can mean penalties for late tax returns can top over £1,600. Accountants & Advisers Using an accountant should take away the stress of filing a tax return and leave you to concentrate on running your business. Not only should penalties and interest be avoided, but accountants may be able to save or defer you tax. They should also keep you informed of your tax position and abreast of any changes in the tax regime. If you plan to use an accountant to deal with your affairs, you should be aware that some firms may charge you a premium if you deliver your records to them close to the deadline because they may have to pay overtime to staff in order to complete the tax returns in time. Moore McCusker, a local Chartered Tax adviser advises: “Taxpayers should provide the information to their advisers as quickly as possible so that if there is a problem the accountant can be held responsible”.
