Award ceremony held to honour charity apprentices

An award ceremony was held at The Rowan Hospice Trading Company in Farlington to congratulate apprentices who successfully completed their level 2 NVQ in Customer Service.

Whilst studying for the qualification the apprentices worked in charity shops and a processing centre, gaining valuable work experience.

Amy Palmer and Will Locke were presented with their certificates and enjoyed a celebration tea with the Trading Company managers including Russell Sansom, manager of the North End shop

The Rowans Hospice team works with the NHS specialist palliative care teams to achieve optimal quality of life for families affected by lifeshortening illnesses both within the community and at our Hospice.

It costs £4.3 million each year to provide hospice care and to ensure the hospice building and grounds are well maintained, offering a haven for rest and recuperation. The provision of their Hospice at Home service increases this figure to £4.8 million.

Although The Rowans Hospice receives some statutory support from the NHS and Social Services, over £4 million (including Hospice at Home) still needs to be fundraised each year. This would not be achieved without help and support from the local community.

Fareham College celeb rates new building opening

Fareham College celebrated a key milestone in its Bishopsfield Road Campus redesign project with the official opening of the first completed building by Mark Hoban, MP. The £16 million project is creating innovative new learning spaces, with investment in technology and facilities to build an outstanding College that will offer students from Fareham, Gosport and the surrounding areas the very best

educational experience.

The opening of ‘A Building’, the first new teaching space to be completed as part of the redesign, was celebrated with an event attended by key project stakeholders, and the unveiling of a commemorative plaque within the building’s contemporary new foyer area.

Guests had the opportunity to tour the building, which is now fully operational and includes new workshops for construction students, 16 general purpose classrooms and two IT suites. Students in the new building are studying construction, sport and uniformed services and travel and tourism – all key careers to our local and regional economy.

President of the Student Board, Laura Quelch, took her first look around the new building and said: “The classrooms

are amazing, so bright, light and modern – they will definitely provide a really inspirational environment in which to work.”

Completed ahead of schedule, the opening of ‘A Building’ is an exciting taster of the leadingedge learning environments that will be featured throughout the rest of the campus redevelopment, which is due to open in September 2015.

The campus design will create a ground floor courtyard of real life studios, workshops including a new gym, art studios, digital industries lab, hair and beauty suites and, of course, our excellent Avenue 141 fine dining restaurant. On the upper floors there will be new science labs, a fully integrated media, music and performing arts suite and general purpose teaching spaces. Fareham students will have access to transforming facilities that promise to support the delivery of the very best vocational training in Hampshire.

As well as housing the latest technologies and curriculum-based equipment, the new campus will feature an impressive architectural design that focuses on accessibility and incorporates sustainable, environmentally responsible solutions, placing Fareham College at the forefront of educational institutions in the area.

As well as formally opening ‘A Building’, MP for Fareham Mark Hoban joined staff from the College and Bouygues UK for a ‘topping out’ ceremony of the building works, where those who have been integral to bringing the new College design to life signed a foundation wall within the progressing structure, leaving a poignant mark which could well be uncovered in generations to come.

Mr Hoban said: “I am sure that the investment in this exciting development at Fareham College will reap excellent returns by producing ambitious young people who will be inspired to pursue exciting careers or go on to higher education.

“It is my pleasure to open this building, and I wish the College all the best for the remainder of the project.”

Concert raises over £3,000 for local charities

Five local charities were presented with cheques following a successfil concert held at HMS Collingwood.

Members from the Royal British Legion, Royal Naval Association, Royal Air Force Association, The Jon Egging’s Trust and Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity were invited to the Wardroom at the Phase 2 Training Establishment to receive their donations.

Also in attendance, were the organisers of the Concert including Flight Sergeant Vanessa Bray

and VIP Commanding Officer of HMS Collingwood Captain Steve Dainton CBE RN. After a brief welcome and cheque presentation the attendees were treated to an intimate surprise lunch with the Captain.

Captain Dainton said: “It was a pleasure to be able to sit with the representatives from each charity and get to know their members and the amazing work that they do behind the scenes.”

Phil Williams, Branch Chairman for the Royal British Legion, Netley and Hamble commented:

“Vanessa came along to an Armed Forces Day event we were at and asked if we would be interested in attending the Concert. We were delighted to have received the support and happy to have helped support the Concert. We didn’t realise that there would be anything after the concert so this was a wonderful surprise.”

The well attended ‘We Will Remember Them’ remembrance concert held at Collingwood last November invited each charity along due to their connection with the armed services. Each had the opportunity to promote themselves to attendees as well as act as standard bearers during the event.

The Concert raised a total of £3,300 was raised through ticket and raffle sales enabling a sum of £660 to be donated to each charity.

Speaking about where the donation will go, Dr Emma Egging, CEO of The Jon Egging Trust commented: “The money raised will go directly to our Blue Skies programme, raising the aspirations of young people from Bournemouth who face barriers to learning and supporting them to be the best they can be.

“Thank you to everyone who made the event such a success.”

New artwork celebrates 50 years of Lions Club in Eastleigh

An eye-catching piece of artwork incorporating an image of a Lion has been jointly unveiled by the Mayor of Eastleigh, Cllr Tony Noyce and Lord David Chidgey to celebrate 50 years of the Lions Club of Eastleigh.

The artwork that is sited in Leigh Road Recreation Ground has been jointly funded by

Eastleigh Local Area Committee (ELAC) and the Lions Club of Eastleigh.

The image of the lion, designed by the Council’s Implementation & Design Officer Joanne Calcutt, was fabricated locally by ICEE Ltd and consists of several panels of 12mm thick Corten pre-rusted steel. The artwork is an anamorphic design

meaning it needs to be viewed from one specific direction to see the complete lion. It also features a range of words chosen by the Lions Club to reflect their work over the last 50 years.

Chair of ELAC Cllr Paul Bicknell said: ”The Lions do fantastic work for the community all the year round and have been doing so in Eastleigh for 50 years. It is only fitting that the town recognises this long connection with the Lions with this stunning artwork which will last another 50 years as I hope the Lions do. This artwork is a fitting tribute to the Lions and is already bringing greater awareness to them as people study and “work out” the artwork.”

Cllr Wayne Irish, President of the Lions said, “I am delighted to be president of Eastleigh Lions in its 50th year in Eastleigh. I would like to thank Eastleigh Borough Council for their help and support with this.’

The sculpture completes the refurbishment of the new seating area on a corner of the Recreation Ground that also included the Installation of three Council’s flag poles. The area will also include planting later in the spring.

Irish smash hit brings fresh show to the Kings Theatre

Essence of Ireland is set to hit the Kings Theatre, Portsmouth on 15 March.

Guaranteed to ignite audiences with its compelling love story inspired by true events, Essence of Ireland is set against the music and dance of Ireland, USA and Spain.

Creative Director and co-writer Ged Graham is delighted to have dancers from the Solas School of Irish Dancing performing.

Phase One of Swanwick Marina Expansion Open for Business

Phase One of Premier’s Swanwick Marina boatyard development is complete; offering new and existing customers first class facilities and an outstanding line up of marine services.

Located on the eastern bank of the River Hamble, Swanwick Marina accommodates over 300 berths and boasts 24 hour access to the Solent.

With the existing boatyard having been in operation since the 1970’s, Premier has invested £5.8 million to build a modern, industry leading boatyard and Phase One of Swanwick’s boatyard is now set to challenge the best on the South Coast.

At the heart of the new development is a modern, industry leading boatyard with purpose built accommodation for a suite of marine services.

Existing tenants, Dixon Yacht Design, Clipper Marine, Sea Ventures, Marine Clean and Swanwick Marine Engineering are all making the move into the new boatyard complex; attracted by the lighter and more spacious units with adjacent parking and luxury showers and toilets for both berth holders and tenants.

Comprising 16 individual offices and workshops, the new boatyard building houses a number of new companies; adding a fresh line up of marine services to the mix.

Services include everything from boat sales to heating and engine maintenance and marine electronics to property consultancy and RYA courses.

Marine engineering specialists Keto Marine and Hamble (Boat & Rib) Centre and also boat sales company M.i.Cats, property consultants Knight Frank and RYA accredited training school, Urban Truant have all been attracted to the site.

Hendy Marine (division of the Hendy Group) has also secured 4 units in the new complex and will be moving in shortly; experts in engine servicing and suppliers of new and refurbished engines for the marine, industrial and automotive industries.

The new boatyard aims to set the standard for the marine industry by providing a larger, more modern and user friendly business environment for tenants. But whilst the facilities in the new yard are up to the minute, the buildings have all been designed in an architectural style that reflects the heritage buildings on the site and preserves the character of the marina.

To complement the services provided by on-site tenants, Swanwick Marina has also upgraded its boatyard facilities to make it the one-stop location to carry out boat maintenance.

A new dedicated dry stack area has been installed to offer storage for 80 boats up to 11m and a specialist Neptune dry stack forklift provides fast lifting and launching from the rack to the new dry stack launch bay. The new boatyard also boasts a new hoist bay and new in 2015 and unique to UK coastal marinas is the addition of a new self-serve fuel pontoon with a dedicated high-speed diesel pump for large power boats and pump out facilities.

Premier Marinas Chief Executive Pete Bradshaw commented: “Premier Marinas prides itself on providing first-class facilities and customer service at all its marinas. Swanwick’s new boatyard will provide an unrivalled boatyard on the River Hamble and in turn, the expansion of the marina will encourage growth across the whole site, attracting further businesses and generating more employment in the area.”

Work on the new boatyard began in early 2014 and the second phase, due to be completed by March 2015, will include an additional building for boat sales offices and new tenant, Maricom; suppliers and installers of navigation and electronic systems.

Swanwick Marina Introduce New Dry Stack Premier’s Swanwick Marina in Hamble is introducing a new dry stack service for boats up to 11m; providing boat owners with a flexible and cost effective alternative to keeping their boats in the water.

The new dry stack will store up to 80 boats of between 6m and 11m in length, but Premier is expecting the dry stack to be extremely popular amongst RIB and sports boat owners and fishermen as a convenient alternative to towing, launching and recovery.

Dry stacking is the ideal way to store small to medium motor-driven boats as it provides improved security against theft and allows boat owners to maximise their time on the water by reducing the time they spend on the launch and retrieval of their boat.

Boat owners can also expect to benefit from easier maintenance, as dry stacking reduces wear and tear on the hull, which in turn means improved through the water performance and reduced fuel consumption.

Maintenance costs are lower too and the boat’s residual value is maintained for longer.

As part of Premier’s dry stack service, customers will be able to request for their boat to be put in the water, any day of the week – with at least 1 hour’s notice (9am-5pm).

A specialist marine forklift will lift the boat gently out of the dry stack and launch it safely into the water ready for immediate use. On returning to the marina, boat owners will be able to leave their vessel on the new waiting pontoon, where it will be lifted ashore, washed off and stored safely until their next visit to the marina.

Flexible service aside, Swanwick Marina offers excellent on-site facilities and a fantastic mix of marine services.

Premier’s dry stack customers can also enjoy the benefit of free nights at other Premier marinas, fuel at cost and 15% discount on boatyard services and savings on marine insurance.

The National Watersports back for 2015!

P&O takes delivery of its biggest ever ship P&O Cruises has officially taken delivery of Britannia – the largest cruise ship ever designed specifically for the British holiday market.

The handover ceremony took place last month (Sunday February 22, 2015) in Italy’s Trieste and was attended by Carnival UK executive chairman, David Dingle, senior executives from P&O Cruises, as well as senior teams from the shipyard Fincantieri, where Britannia was built.

The traditional ceremony included the exchange of flags, in which the shipyard flag is taken down and the P&O Cruises flag is flown. Britannia’s Captain Paul Brown was also presented with the first water to touch the hull of Britannia during the official float out ceremony.

Other guests at the handover ceremony included some of P&O Cruises Food Heroes; TV wine expert Olly Smith who is represented in The

Glass House wine bar and restaurant as well as master patissier Eric Lanlard and cheese expert Charlie Turnbull who are represented in The Market Cafe and Epicurean fine dining restaurant.

Britannia will left Fincantieri shipyard at the end of February and arrived in Southampton on Friday March 6. She will be officially named on Tuesday March 10 before her maiden voyage to the Mediterranean on Saturday March 14.

Southampton Apprentices to Build Sustainable Boat for Ben Ainslie Racing Ben Ainslie Racing has announced that a new project with City College Southampton to build two specialised docking ribs. The boats will be built by apprentices trained by the college under the supervision of Darren Patten at the College’s Marine Skills Centre.

The docking rib has been developed from those used at the 34th America’s Cup to help berth the huge, foiling multihulls. The ribs have a highly innovative design, powered by a centrally positioned outboard that can be rotated through 360 degrees to push the boat in any direction. This makes them very manoeuvrable, an important asset when they are used to move the AC45 and AC62 America’s Cup boats into their berths.

The team has researched the most sustainable materials from which to manufacture the boats, supported by

BAR’s sustainability partner 11th Hour Racing. A mixture of materials have been explored that have a lower environmental impact than traditional resins and fibres, researching their overall impact in terms of strength and environmental footprint. The team is working with the college on natural materials such as flax (a plant material that has been used in marine applications for thousands of years), epoxy bonding resins with high biomass content (50+%), and a recyclable PET core material that comes from plastic bottles.

The project will provide an opportunity to assess these more sustainable materials. The students are already taught to monitor the different material and wastage quantities as part of their curriculum – driving efficiency in the construction process, an important component of sustainability.

The students working on the ribs are mostly Level 2 and Level 3 apprentice boat builders and engineers, studying for City and Guilds qualifications. Many of them work for local marine companies and attend the college one day a week. The college’s Marine lecturer, Darren Patten will manage his rotating workforce so the highest possible number of students will have the opportunity to work on the project, and be part BAR’s challenge for the 35th America’s Cup.

The construction commenced at the beginning of the spring term, and the boats are due for delivery in May 2015 – so the timeline is tight. BAR’s Shore Manager, James Stagg commented, “We’re really pleased that City College Southampton have joined us in this project. We need these docking ribs before we commence sailing operations at the new HQ in Portsmouth this summer, but it’s great to do it in such a way that it will give these young apprentices workplace experience with a project that they own.”

Every student will have the opportunity for exposure to each of the speciality skills involved in the production; from the building of the mould, through the composite construction, fairing and painting, and finally the fit out of engines, tubes and electronics. BAR will be responsible for the materials, and the boats will be built with support partners Yamaha, who will provide the engines.

Duchess of Cambridge Gets Inside Track on Cup challenge

Ben Ainslie Racing (BAR) and the 1851 Trust were today delighted to host a visit from The Duchess of Cambridge, the Trust’s Royal Patron.

The Duchess received the inside track on the team’s progress and was privy to some of the secret technology that will not only give the team the competitive edge in the upcoming 35th America’s Cup, but also be adapted for the BAR Visitor Centre. This will be run by the 1851 Trust at BAR’s Portsmouth HQ and will show not only why STEM matters, but STEM in action.

The Duchess was introduced to BAR’s Design Team, who shared the innovative technology behind the America’s Cup racing, introduced some of the advanced technologies the team have in development and gave an update on the timeline and build schedule, between now and the final racing event in 2017.

Many of these technologies will be simplified and used within the BAR Visitor Centre which will be an engaging and interactive showcase for the sport, sustainability and innovation, to inspire and engage more young engineers. It will also support the STEM agenda - to focus on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics in schools and provide resources to teachers within the core subjects.

Ben Ainslie commented, “It was fantastic to have The Duchess join us today. We’ve just returned to sailing on the Solent with our training boat, and it was a chance for us to be able to explain what we are up to on the technical side of the team’s challenge, and show the work that goes on behind the scenes” The Duchess added her own touch to the 1851 Trust mural - painting BAR’s foiling AC45 The tour continued to Old Portsmouth and the

construction site of the new headquarters and BAR Visitor Centre. To celebrate its launch last October, the 1851 Trust hosted an art project, coordinated by Southsea arts company Strong Island, bringing seventy two young people from six local schools together – St Jude’s Church of England School, Park Community School, Admiral Lord Nelson School, Charter Academy, Ryde School and Ryde Academy – to work on a painting of the Solent waters that link them all.

Local street artists James Waterfield and My Dog Sighs supported the project, painting the skyline from Portsmouth to Ryde, Isle of Wight, and worked with the students who filled the Solent with images of its rich maritime history - a history that Ben Ainslie Racing will maintain from their new home in Portsmouth.

The students showcased their artwork to The Duchess, including HMS Victory – Admiral Lord Nelson’s flagship – now just a few hundred metres away in the Historic Dockyard. The Duchess added her own touch to the mural, alongside Team Principal, Ben Ainslie, with a painting of the team’s AC45 – the dramatic, highspeed foiling ACWS boats that will race off Portsmouth and Southsea seafront in July 2015 and 2016.

The Duchess was briefed on the construction of the headquarters, the BAR Visitor Centre and shown the racecourse for the America’s Cup World Series event in July.

Local students from Brune Park Community School, City College Southampton, Cowes Enterprise College, Springfield School, Mayfield School, Portsmouth Grammar School, Priory School, Riders Junior School and Westover Primary School were also invited to meet The Duchess. The 35 students are some of the first to experience the ideas and exhibits in development that will feature in the Visitor Centre, including a virtual 3D sailing experience.

The Duchess of Cambridge tried out some of the BAR Visitor Centre exhibits in development Once open, the centre will provide a unique new experience of sailing for visitors, giving those who have never previously been in a sailboat a sense of what it’s like to race at the very top of the sport.

Other tasters on show included a 3D printer, producing custom parts for the team’s boats and the Power Grinder that the sailors use for fitness training, adapted to demonstrate the importance of energy efficiency. The new building is being constructed to BREEAM Excellent standard, and sustainable operations and safeguarding the marine environment are the final pillar of the 1851 Trust’s activity.

The Duchess also met apprentices from City College, Southampton. The student apprentices are building two ‘Docking Ribs’ (specialist boats that will help manoeuvre the America’s Cup multihulls in preparation for craning) in a combined project with BAR. Helping young people achieve maritime skills and qualifications is another long term goal of the Trust.

Swimming school picks up 42 medals at winter meet

The swimmers from Locks Heath Swimming Squad delivered 75 Personal Bests, 42 medals, five Hampshire County Qualifying Times and a club record at a meet hosted by Fareham Nomads at Waterlooville on 25th Jan. Newcomers Sophie Thompson and Taylor Gargiulo, both nine, performed well, putting in personal best performances, with Taylor successfully winning a gold medal in his 50m backstroke and a bronze in 200m freestyle.

Joshua Beaudro, 10, was on fire in the 200m Individual Medley. After the Butterfly leg he was just off the back. He put in a great back stroke leg to get back into contention before taking the lead with what looked like an almost effortless breaststroke leg. He went on to win gold in this race by finishing off the competition with a strong freestyle finish. He also picked up a Bronze medal in his 200m free.

Jan Stoop, 11, won a silver medal in each of his four races with his best performance being in the 50m butterfly. He won his other silver medals in 50m free, 100m free and 100m Individual Medley.

Kyle Kirkland, 10, put in another fine performance and added to his ever increasing medal collection. He secured two gold medals with strong swims in 200m freestyle and 100m Individual Medley. He also collected three silver medals for 50m free, 100m free and 50m back.

A big congratulations goes to Jack Newton, 14, who secured not only a personal best but a club record. This time it was for the 400m free. His performance gave him a deserved third position and a bronze medal. Jack also managed to get bronze medals in 100m free, 50m free, 50m back and silver 50m fly.

Jack’s little sister, Lucy Newton, 11, swam well to earn herself a gold medal in 50m back and followed this up with a silver medal performance in 50m fly.

Evelyn Hall, 10, swam amazingly well, picking up three silver medals in 50m free, 50m back and 50m breast. She finished off her collection with a bronze medal for her personal best performance in 100m free.

Another young starlet was Eve Limburn, nine, who won the 100m Individual Medley for her age category, earning herself her first gold medal.

Eve also delivered another top swim to gain a bronze medal for 50m back.

Jessica Larby, 13, picked up four shiny medals with good performances in 50m free and 50m back, both for silvers and she gained bronze medals in 200m free and 200m Individual Medley.

Not wanting to be outdone by his sister, Thomas Larby, 10, swam out of his skin for a personal best time in 50m butterfly which earned him a gold medal. Thomas showed off his butterfly skills once more in his 100m Individual Medley, helping him finish in second position so another silver medal to add to his ever growing medal collection.

Shannon Lamb, 11, continues to demonstrate her individual smooth style, barely making a splash as she glides through the water. Her first race was the 200m freestyle where she showed great strength to finish in second place for a silver medal. She then went on to show a high level of stamina as she finished third in the 400m free, earning herself a bronze medal.

Nine year old Isabel Barbary won her first competitive medals by swimming into silver medal position in the 50m backstroke. She then showed good skills in all four strokes to give her a bronze medal for a personal best performance in the 100m Individual Medley.

Scott Hutin,10, proved that he has great stamina and determination to succeed after competing in many longer distance races during the day. His best was his 400M free and he well and truly deserved his third position giving him a bronze medal.

Brothers Taylor and Matthew Collins were engaged in a bit of sibling rivalry as they raced in adjoining lanes in the 50m breast. Matthew also competed in the 50m free and won a bronze medal in the boys age nine category.

There were more medals to come with Arabella Suttie, 12, and Ella Richardson-Fitt, 10, both swimming well to win bronze medals in their age categories for 400m free. Ten Year old Amelia Ayling also delivered an excellent performance in 50m fly to leave her in third position, collecting a bronze medal.

For such a young team they delivered some very mature performances and collected a large amount of medals.

Wilko for Wickham Star who beat cancer joins The Proclaimers, 10cc and Billy Bragg on Festival Line-Up Legendary rhythm & blues guitarist Wilko Johnson is among the latest big-name acts confirmed for this year’s Wickham Festival in Hampshire.

Two years ago the former Dr Feelgood & Blockheads guitarist was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and, after refusing treatment, was given just ten months to live. He embarked on a farewell tour which included a date at the 2013 Wickham Festival described by Festival organiser Peter Chegwyn as one of the most emotional shows he had ever seen.

According to his doctors Wilko wasn’t expected to live past the end of 2013 but when he was still alive in the Spring of 2014 his doctors discovered that his cancer was not inoperable after all. They removed a 3kg tumour in an 11-hour operation and Wilko has now made a full recovery and is about to start gigging again with Roger Daltrey of The Who. One of his first gigs will be a fund-raiser for Addenbrookes Hospital in Cambridge whose doctors saved Wilko’s life. (See www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-englandcambridgeshire-31516558). Wilko will then appear at a small number of UK festivals this summer and will headline the opening night at Wickham on Thursday 6th August.

“It’s bound to be another emotional night”, says Wickham Festival organiser Peter Chegwyn. “When Wilko appeared at Wickham in 2013 we all thought we would never see him again so we’re delighted to be welcoming him back two years later. There’s been huge interest in his appearance with fans from all over Europe booking tickets for his show.”

Wilko Johnson will be supported by another legendary rock guitarist at Wickham, Andy Fairweather-Low, who often appears in concert with Eric Clapton.

Andy Fairweather-Low was the singer in 60s chart band Amen Corner, had a solo top-10 hit with ‘Wide-Eyed and Legless’ and has often performed live with other guitar greats including Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Ronnie Wood of the Rolling Stones, Pete Townsend of The Who, and Bill Wyman’s Rhythm Kings.

Other artists confirmed for this year’s Wickham Festival include chart-toppers 10cc, The Proclaimers, and The South (formerly The Beautiful South), singer-songwriter Billy Bragg, and top folk artists Eliza Carthy, Kathryn Tickell, and Show of Hands.

The Wickham Festival takes place between Thursday 6th and Sunday 9th August, 2015 on a green field site just outside the village of Wickham near Fareham in Hampshire.

A history of Austin A30 and A35 cars and vans

Little Austin’s have been a favourite of many for decades, they are an infectious petite car which owners have grown to love.

The A30 model range was launched at the 1951 Earls Court Motor Show in London by Austin Motor Company and produced by the newly formed British Motor Company from May 1952.

The car was advertised as the “new Austin Seven”.

This little car was one of the first all new post war cars, made at a time of rationing and hardship but at a reasonable price.

At the launch the car cost £507 undercutting the Morris Minor by £62.

The body structure was designed by T K Garrett, who had been an aeronautical engineer before

joining Austin but the styling was by Ricardo “Dick” Burzi.

Production ran to 223,264 examples before the model run ceased in 1956, they were assembled at Longbridge UK and Melbourne Australia.

Originally offered as a two door saloon, by 1954 a van and a van based Countryman were available.

A car tested by The Motor magazine in 1952 had a top speed of 62 MPH and fuel consumption of 42 MPG from its 803CC state of the art straight four engine.

At the time this was impressive.

The car was so successful an upgraded A35 was produced from 1956 to 1959, but the design lasted in van format until as late as 1968.

Austin also made a now ultra-rare Pick Up only 477 made.

The later A35 had a larger back window and a larger 948CC engine eventually to increase to 1,098CC. These cars have a top speed in excess of 70MPH. Back in the day they were even

tested on the Autobahn, driving flat out all day, averaging 60 MPH for 25,000 miles.

Total production for all A35 models reached 354,609.

These little cars were successful at motor racing, and rallying during the late 1950’s and early 1960’s.

Today they are still used for motorsport and historic car rallies.

Charity ball to raise funds for PLANETS

Fareham catering students ‘takeover’ restaurant

48 Fareham College Hospitality and Catering students have embraced the challenge of ‘taking over’ and running a local restaurant, Woodies Bar and Brassiere in Chichester.

The ‘takeover’ event enabled students to experience the pressures, challenges and rewards of working in the catering industry, using the skills they have learnt during their course.

The restaurant was very busy with around 150 guests enjoying the lunch and dinner services provided by the students, who took on roles needed to facilitate a fully operational restaurant from Restaurant Managers and Head Chefs to Commis Chefs and Bar Staff.

Students went through a rigorous interview process in order to be selected to take part in the takeover, which included writing and submitting their CV and a cover letter, and learning key interview techniques. The selection process, led

by Programme Manager, Oonagh Taylor, allowed students to be allocated roles that best suited their individual skills and talents.

Level 2 Hospitality and Catering student, Lee Taylor, who took on the role of Restaurant Manager for the event, said: “The takeover has given me a real insight into my desired future career. I have always wanted to be a Restaurant Manager and this experience has helped me understand more about the role and what I need to do to get there.”

Commis Chef, Jasmine Allen (Level 1 Hospitality and Catering student) added: “It was lovely to work in a new environment with a new team, and I feel proud that we were able to provide such a smooth service.”

The owners of Woodies Brassiere, Shane Beaton and Matt Beaton, commended the way in which the Fareham team managed the restaurant: “The students

were a real credit to Fareham College. They were hard working both in the kitchen and front of house. It was a lovely experience for us to help the students, not only with their learning but also their work experience, which will be valuable for them in the future.”

As Fareham College has its very own training restaurant, Avenue 141, which is open to customers daily, the students regularly have the opportunity to practice their catering skills, which has helped to develop their confidence and been directly transferable to another restaurant environment.

Avenue 141 Restaurant Manager, Ellie Exley said: “It was fantastic to see students of all levels working together and rising to the challenge of running an entire restaurant. The recruitment process meant students put a lot of time and effort into their applications and it outlined the important employability skills that are necessary for a role within the catering industry.

Throughout the service, students were confident and willing and I am very proud of their hard work and determined attitudes which made the takeover a real success.”

Important year for HMS Warrior

Situated in the heart of Portsmouth’s Historic Dockyard, HMS Warrior 1860 commands a prime position in the harbour.

The ship is one of the most unusual attractions on the South coast and visited by in excess of 350,000 people a year.

However she is not getting any younger; 2015 marks an incredibly important year for Warrior with the hopefully successful outcome of a Heritage Lottery Fund application due in March.

They are seeking £2.6 Million for upper deck bulwark repairs and ship preservation, however, in order to qualify for this they will need to raise over £1 million themselves and so their public fundraising campaign commences.

Warrior Preservation Trust is a selffunded charity that is not supported by any government grants or funding.

Warrior relies solely on daily visitors, donations, private hire, weddings, and fundraising events.

Heritage Lottery Funding affords the ability to undertake large scale

projects that may otherwise be cost inhibitive.

The importance cannot be underestimated of ensuring that HMS Warrior is preserved as a piece of working history for a further 150 years.

To assist with this throughout the year they host a series of public events, the first of which they are delighted to announce is their 2015 Programme of Fundraising Dining events.

Local Astronaut Timothy Peake has now been on ISS for a number of weeks, enabling Europe to contribute to the excellent science being carried out in low Earth orbit.

Tim was born in Chichester in 1972 and studied at Chichester High School for Boys on the excellent Southdown’s Planetarium site before attending the Royal Military Academy in Sandhurst.

This year Tim Peake will become the first British European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut to live and work on the International Space Station. Tim will join the crew of Expedition 46/47 for six months, launching on board the Soyuz TMA-19M from Russia’s Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan in November 2015.

Tim’s mission ‘Principia’, named for Sir Isaac Newton’s seminal text Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica, was announced by the European Space Agency in May 2013. His mission will follow those of fellow ESA astronauts Alexander Gerst, who has just returned to Earth, and Samantha Cristoforetti, who

He served as a platoon commander in the Royal Green Jackets and became a helicopter pilot and flight instructor, subsequently graduating from the Empire Test Pilots School as a helicopter Test Pilot. In 2006 Tim completed a BSc (Hons) in flight dynamics and evaluation at the University of Portsmouth and, having gained over 3000 flying hours, left the Army in 2009 as a result of his successful candidacy for ESA astronaut selection.

His success in this regard saw him being chosen to be one of six candidate astronauts from a field of over 8,000 applicants, graduating from basic astronaut training in November 2010. Tim thereafter embarked upon advanced astronaut training to increase his skills and ability to work in a microgravity environment. More recently he was appointed as a UK ambassador for science and space-based careers, working with the UK Space Agency in developing the country’s microgravity research programme.

Tim commented that “The medical training has been incredible and one of the most enjoyable aspects of mission training. As an army officer I was always qualified and interested in first aid, but as an ISS crewmember a higher level of training is required. This includes skills such as suturing, injections, phlebotomy, minor surgery and even tooth extraction. There are also several in-flight biomedical activities planned such as extensive use of ultrasound, otoscopic imagery, routine phlebotomy, ECG and airway monitoring.”

Since being assigned to an ISS mission, Tim has been gaining the required knowledge of the different modules of the Space Station, training to be able to undertake the various experiments he will conduct on orbit and practicing how to carry out activities such as body mass and metabolism measurement and dentistry.

We asked Tim for his views on the Medical knowledge and training he has undertaken and is required to know for his mission and details of any in-flight biomedical activities planned. He informed us that 40 hours of standard Crew Medical Officer (CMO) training was required together with ESA field medical training (familiarisation with acute trauma and surgery) and whilst on ISS there was periodic operational medical monitoring.

Tim’s health must be maintained in the lead up to his mission, during take-off and over the 6 months he is in orbit. Associated with the maintenance of his health is the medical research he’ll conduct which is important to help us understand how to sustain life beyond the confines of Earth. Tim has been undergoing a variety of examinations and has undergone medical training in preparation for his mission. The field of Space Life and Biomedical Sciences is one that he has championed in the UK due to the strong potential for this domain to benefit terrestrial healthcare.

We asked Tim what he is looking forward to most about his mission.

“There are so many different elements to a six month ISS mission that it is hard to choose what I am most looking forward to. The most demanding tasks will undoubtedly be robotics and EVA, but equally enjoyable will be enjoying the incredible view and of course sharing the mission as much as possible with everyone back on Earth.”

After beginning in humble premises, including a rat infested shed in White’s Shipyard with a communal lean-to toilet, Peter eventually purchased the land to build his own units. They have occupied those units in Lower Vicarage Road, Woolston, since 1970 and hope to remain there for many years to come.

Over the years the company has adapted to changing technologies and, as well as continuing to offer many commercial and Industrial engraving services, P.J.Drew (Engravers) Ltd also produce Vehicle Graphics, Shop Fascias, as well as many other types of signage. The business has changed in other ways too. Peter no longer deals with the day to day running of the company, he has handed the reins over to his daughter, Donna Scopes, who - with the help of her team - is doing a fantastic job of running the family business.
