Lisa Bloxsome opened Always Plastic Free in Shore Road, Warsash on the 6th December 2018.

The main ethos of the store was to offer alternatives to single use plastic – a few of the products offered are Bamboo Toothbrushes, Bamboo Straws, Chillys Bottles, Beeswax Wraps, Vegan Wraps and Rewrap Sandwich Bags (as feature on The Customer is always right). The shop also offers reusable and repurposed products such as Seaglass Jewellery and Cards, Free Machine Art and Cards and driftwood items all made locally. Kards & Keepsakes is very conscious of the environmental impact of plastic use, therefore most of our plastic wrapping goes home with Sheila to turn into eco bricks keeping her awake while watching TV! See Eco bricks in use. We are pleased to say one of our largest suppliers are already in the process of selling cards that are not packaged in plastic except for the ones that will damage easily and more of our suppliers are looking into this idea.

LHSS had a successful day on Sunday 19th May when the children competed in the Portsmouth Long Course Sprint Meet held at the Mountbatten leisure centre. In total there were 101 individual swims, with an impressive 94 personal bests. Our swimmers managed to secure 3 gold, 1 silver, 6 bronze and 1 club record. Young Eva Beaudro (9) got the LHSS club record in her 100M breast. Well done Eva Charlotte Aris (10) is going from strength to strength at the moment. She won gold in the 50m back, 100 back, 100 fly, silver in 50 fly and bronze in 50 free and 100 free. Daisy Smith (11) won bronze in the 50m free and 50 fly. Grace Goddard (13) won bronze in the 50m free. Toby Ellis (11) is looking strong and had a great day, he won bronze in 50m fly. The club welcomed and supported Jasmine Allen as this was her first swim meet and she produced some

great times. There are too many attending children to mention but Save up tolong 70%on Inkjet Coach Lynda Reid said ‘competing course (50m pool) was a great experience for Cartridges all the youngster’s. Some swimmers had never seen a 50m pool until they arrived for warm, they all tried very hard’.

The Ferryman (or is it)?? Warsash is getting very excited as The Ferryman, which has been closed since the new year, is preparing to open its doors again. New tenants Shaun and Kim have returned after meeting, then running the pub together 23 years ago! Since getting the keys last month they haven’t stopped and hope everyone will enjoy the new surroundings which although is a huge undertaking they say “it will be well worth the effort” The pub will have a fresh start with a new name which until confirmed is under wraps at the moment but the clue is linked to the local maritime theme and their green fingered friends next door in the allotments!. “We are very much looking forward to making the Ferryman a proper pub, with great food, beer and regular entertainment. The pub will proudly be on pub watch and operate strict policies on keeping drugs and violence out of our premises.”

Kim and Shaun have decided to not have a pool table, Sky or BT Sport but rather concentrate on a more traditional pub ideal. TVs will be of course be permanently installed for the big free to air events (especially the rugby with the upcoming world cup breakfast mornings !)

Simplyhealth, Simply Helping!

A torrential downpour first thing did not stop an enthusiastic group of 10 volunteers making a difference to the community centre in Wickham. Simplyhealth is a large company based in Andover and in Winchester helping its clients and customers get the healthcare support they need. They take part in a rolling programme of volunteer events organised by Community First and were happy to answer the call for help from The Wickham Centre. The Centre is keen to develop its community garden and make it a welcoming space for local people to enjoy. Split into two groups, the volunteers tackled different areas of the garden. One group cleared an area ready to be made into a sensory garden, the other cut back and planted up the garden outside the Wickham room, making it into a safe and welcoming space for families using the community café. Steph Cohen, a volunteer from Simplyhealth said, “We’ve had a fantastic day spending time together as a team and helping The Wickham Centre. Clouds and rain didn’t dampen our enthusiasm and it has been very rewarding to see the difference you can make in just a few hours.” Kate Turnbull the Centre’s Volunteer Garden Manager said, “I am blown away by the amount of work that Simplyhealth has achieved for us. They have been so positive, their presence has had a massive impact here as passers-by have stopped and asked questions and have been interested in what we are doing. Reflections of a Pond Master During the summer months I often hear a toad croaking away noisily at the edge of the pond, although I have never yet managed to see him! One year, a three-foot grass snake was in residence, while foxes, birds and small mammals regularly come and go.

While water features are big business these days particularly in smaller or urban gardens, if you have the room, a pond really does add something special and more importantly encourages the presence of wildlife. My own large pond came into being nearly twenty years ago when I had ambitious plans to build a naturalised swimming pool. Naturalised Planting and Wildlife For a number of reasons this did not materialise and instead I found myself creating a very large pond complete with stone waterfalls and extensive naturalised planting that includes reed beds to help purify the water. Generally speaking ornamental ponds contain fish, while those without are more commonly referred to as a wildlife pond. However, there is plenty of evidence that any pond will help to encourage a variety of wildlife into your garden. Kingfishers, Herons and Snakes. Each June a Kingfisher visits my pond hoping to catch some unsuspecting fish while the heron of course, is a regular visitor.

The Right Mixture So, despite the fact we are currently encouraged to conserve water and we might believe it is not politically correct to be installing ponds, we need to weigh this against supporting our local wildlife. Additionally, get the right mixture of sun and shade and a pond will not require constant refilling, and more often than not in normal conditions, our average rainfall will keep it topped up.

Chichester Cinema at New Park - Ruby Anniversary Chichester Cinema at New Park is celebrating its Ruby Anniversary. Back in 1979, the closure of the final cinema in Chichester at the time led to the formation of a film society showing 40 films a year for students. In 1986, the college society moved permanently into New Park, and attendances have grown to 76,000 at 1,500 screenings in 2018. The cinema has invested in new facilities and equipment, including state-of-the-art digital projection which allows live performances transmitted by satellite and internet, featuring opera, ballet, theatre and exhibitions from around the world. Chichester Cinema at New Park is celebrating the anniversary with events such as Ruby Tuesdays â&#x20AC;&#x201C; twice monthly screenings of milestones from past years. Ruby Friends features film-inspired events locally and nationally, and the Cine Circle provides a monthly opportunity for film fans to discuss films and air their views. The Chichester International film Festival is now in its 28th year, and is taking place in August with six screens at four venues. Attendances reached more than 9,000 for the festival last year which showed 150 films from 30 countries. It is the largest film festival on the South Coast. HMS COLLINGWOOD SAYS GOODBYE TO COMMANDING OFFICER Sailors and staff at HMS Collingwood said goodbye to Captain Rob Vitali, the Commanding Officer of the establishment and Captain of the Maritime Warfare School (MWS). Captain Vitali was the guest of honour at the Establishment’s weekly Divisions. He was then escorted to the Wardroom by the Guard of Honour and Heads of Departments through the main thoroughfare, which was lined by Navy and civilian colleagues who waved him farewell. On departing Captain Vitali said “It has been an honour and a privilege to have commanded HMS Collingwood and the Maritime Warfare School, where the combined military and civilian team works so well to prepare our people for front line operations and to support all the units operating within the Establishment. I have been particularly satisfied with the progress we are making in transforming our modern learning environment in order to maintain first class training; Collingwood and its sophisticated training facilities remain at the cutting edge of global Naval training.” Before departing, Captain Vitali spoke to Leading Engineering Technician (Communication Information Systems) (LET(CIS)) Course 18/02 and the Physical Training Instructors (PTIs) from the Fareham Base. HMS COLLINGWOOD SAILOR IS GUEST OF HONOUR AT NURSING HOME serenaded by the residents singing a selection of naval-themed tunes. He was later presented with a leaving gift from the residents and the staff had baked a celebration cake in his honour covered in sprinkles in the shape of mini ships’ anchors. Jane Palmer, Director of Heathfield Care Homes Limited said, “We’ve been so lucky to have had Dan visit with our residents. They’ve enjoyed talking to him and really loved seeing him in his uniform on Wednesday when he agreed to open our residents-requested newly built bar.” She went on to congratulate Daniel on his Mayor’s award saying, “Everyone at the Home is delighted Dan has won this award based on the effort he’s put into our visits to us. Fresh from his appearance at the Fareham MayorMaking ceremony, where he was presented with the Mayor’s Award for his volunteer services at a local nursing home, he was invited back to the home, Tudor Lodge, for a celebration tea. However, unknown to Daniel, the staff had planned that he should be the guest of honour and open the new residents’ bar in the Home! Tudor Lodge Nursing Home caters for 56 residents in a caring and homely atmosphere and staff were delighted when residents suggested that a bar would be a great way to relax and socialise for those residents who are no longer able to visit a traditional pub. It also provides a welcoming place for football fans to follow their favourite matches away from the main lounge! ROYAL NAVY VETERAN RECEIVES SPECIAL VISIT

Royal Navy veteran, Mr Leslie Johncey, 94, received some special visitors recently when Lieutenant Steve James, Chief Petty Officer Dave Fielding and Petty Officer Del Nicholls, who are currently serving at HMS Collingwood, Fareham, paid him a visit at his care home in Netley. Netley Court Care Home hold a monthly “Gents Club” luncheon for the residents, and with the date for this month’s event coinciding with the D-Day 75th Anniversary commemorations, the event held a special resonance for World War 2 veteran Mr Johncey. Mr Johncey did his initial training at HMS Collingwood during the war, he was involved with escorting troops across the channel on D-Day, he also served in the Far East. Lieutenant Steve James said of the visit “During the luncheon we were privileged to meet Mr Johncey and discuss his Service, we also met several other residents of the Care Home who had military Service or close ties to the military, including working on vital and pioneering submarine engineering projects. They are a fantastic group of people, from a generation without peer, we were humbled to hear of their

Service and it was a genuine privilege to spend a few hours in their company.” The visit was arranged by Care Home worker Richard Hazelgrove, who was determined to arrange this special visit for Mr Johncey, who talked effectionately about his time at both HMS Collingwood and in the Royal Navy. WE WILL REMEMBER THEM Pupils from Hook-with-Warsash C of E Academy held a very special service on Strawberry Fields in Warsash in memory of the 3000 soldiers who left from the River Hamble on D-day 75 years ago. Warsash was the embarkation point for Commandos of 1st and 4th Special Service (Commando) Brigades, who included both British Army and Royal Marine forces. The 1st Brigade was commanded by Lord Lovat and included his famous bagpiper Bill Millin. The two brigades landed on the British and Canadian beaches of Sword and Juno. Lord Lovat asked Millin to play the troops ashore to keep up moral and he was one of the first people off the landing craft. He was known as ‘Piper Bill’ during this time. In 2002 he met some of the Germans that had been fighting in WWII and he asked them “Why didn’t you shoot me?” and they answered that they didn’t shoot him because they thought he was mad and took pity on him. Over 420 children and staff walked to Strawberry fields dressed in 1940s styles clothes. They were met by ex pupil Toby Ellis who plays the bagpipes and attended in honour of Bill Millin. Headteacher Sara Willloughby told the children local stories about the war and Toby played 'Highland Laddie' which was one of the tunes played by Bill MIllin on D-Day. The children held a minute's silence for all those that died in the war and year 5 pupil, Zander, played 'The Last Post' on his bugle. To end this special service Reverend Terry led a prayer and blessing with the children. After the service Toby continued to play the pipes to the memorial in front of the Rising Sun where pupils from service families, and one pupil whose great-granddad left for D-day from Warsash, laid a wreath in memory of the soldiers that died. A visiting parent said, "It was an absolutely beautiful service; there wasn't a dry eye left from anyone watching. It's so lovely so see that the younger generation are keeping the memories of these war heroes alive." photos by Catherine Nice

Shockwave Player Shockwave Player was a freeware software plug-in for viewing multimedia and video games in web pages. It was discontinued and is unsupported since April 9, 2019. However, since then, seven new vulnerabilities have been detected but will not be patched. Remove this software from your system! 1. Open the Windows start menu. 2. Select Settings. 3. In the 'Find a setting' bar, start typing "Remove" and then select "Add or Remove Programs" 4. From the "Apps & Features" page Select "Adobe Shockwave Player" from the list. 5. Click Uninstall. 6. Proceed with the directions on your screen to remove Adobe Shockwave Player from your computer. NOTE: These instructions are for the latest Windows 10 update. The cost of sickness to UK businesses and the economy is well documented, the 2011 Frost-Black report showed that: • Sickness absence cost the economy around £15 billion annually, predominantly in lost economic output; • £13 billion was spent on health-related state benefits; • long-term absence made up around 5% of all sickness absence but accounted for almost half of total working days lost. A 2013 audit published by the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy, stated that 40 per cent of all staff sickness is due to work-related musculoskeletal disorders (MSD), e.g. back pain. Prevention Predominately, physiotherapy is associated with MSDs once an injury or condition has occurred. Although, physiotherapy can have a proactive role, by listening to the employer and under standing the work patterns and

the needs of the staff, creating a bespoke strategy to increase wellbeing within the workplace. Options On-site; bringing a physiotherapist into the workplace can prevent and reduce absences from work, save money for the employer and boost the productivity. Also, the added benefit of bringing a physiotherapist onsite, is that they become a key part of the team and can understand the culture and ethics of the workplace. Off-site; if the work-place doesn’t have the infrastructure to support an on-site clinic, employees can often be treated off-site on a case by case basis, receiving a similar service to that of an on-site service. Return to work; a physiotherapist can help identify adjustments that need to be made for an employee returning to work, assisting businesses to support their employee.

Does lunging equal happiness?.....in a roundabout sort of way...yes! I'm certainly not the first person to highlight it but it can't be shouted about enough. The psychological impact that activity and exercise has on a person is worth it's weight in diamonds. There are countless studies showing a link between physicalactivity and the improvement of mental health issues. There is evidence to suggest that it can't have a significant effect on reducing the symptoms of those suffering with anxiety. What you choose to do is up to you. If you hate running, the on your new program of running 3 times a week is going to get pretty tedious pretty quickly and you may start looking for excuses not to go. However, if your activity is something you enjoy and are passionate about, you'll look forward to the opportunity to do it. Try new things and seek out passions. If you like tennis do that, if you like bouncing on a trampoline to disco music, do that, if you like walking then do that....You get the idea. For me, it's how I like to unwind and it's a very mindful and centering process. Even a dog walk is enough to raise my spirits if I'm rather sleepy or a bit put out. I can speak from experience that exercise can have drastic effects in your mood and emotional balance. Whilst it's not a magic pill that will solve all your problems, I truly believe it's a hefty piece of the puzzle. Get moving today and be awesome!!! T PUSH UP - Start in the top position of a push up with your shoulders stacked above your wrists and your body straight. - Perform a push up making sure to keep your elbows no more than 45° away from your body. - As you get to the top of the movement, rotate your body on to your right hand and the outer side of your right foot. Tea h up tall with your left hand, keeping your core braced and body straight. - Return to the start and repeat on the other side.

SQUAT TUCK JUMP - start with feet hip width apart. Squat down until your thighs are at least 45° to the ground but 90° if you can. - Explode up through your heels into the air and bring your knees up towards your chest if you can. - Land softly and repeat.

LOW PLANK - Start in the same position as a push up but on your forearms. Keep your forearms facing forward like a Sphinx. - Brace your core, making sure that your body is as straight as possible from head to toe and hold for the time. Kettlebell workout Perform each movement for 10 reps each side with a weight that is challenging but allows you to keep good form. Rest for 90 seconds between sets and do 3 sets before moving in to the next movement. Bodyweight workout Set a timer for 20 minutes. Do the circuit as many times as possible in that time 10 T-pushups 20 seconds low plank 10 squat tuck jumps

KETTLEBELL SWING - Stand with your feet shoulder width apart and the kettlebell an arms reach in front of you. - Flex at the hips and knees to reach forward and hold the handle with both hands. Your shoulders should be relaxed and down with straight arms. - Lift and drag the kettlebell back, allowing it to swing between your legs and bending at the hips and knees. Try to imagine touching a button behind you with your butt to help get the hip hinge position right. - Powerfully extend the knees and hips forward in an explosive movement, allowing momentum to propel the Kettlebell forward and up to shoulder height whilst maintaining straight arms. The power should come from your hips, not your arms. - Allow gravity to bring the Kettlebell down 'catching' it at the back of the swing between your legs with that same bend at the hips.and knees and repeat the explosive movement.

SHOULDER PRESS - clean the kettlebell to the rack position with feet shoulder width apart. - Press up, turning your palm to face forwards as you reach the top. - Control the movement back to the racked position.

KETTLEBELL CLEAN - You can start the clean either from the floor or from the swing. In this example we will use the swing as you've already learnt part of it. - Start with feet shoulder width apart. Start the drag and lift section of the swing and as you bring it forward to about 30Â°- 40Â°, start to rotate your forearm and bring the kettlebell in close. - Catch the kettlebell by bringing it around the wrist to land softly on the back of the forearm, supported by the shoulder and with the hand at the sternum (bony plate between your ribs around nipple level). - the reverse the movement, rotate the arm in the opposite direction to allow it to fall back to its swing path. Maintain a strong core and flat back as it travels back. Repeat as necessary.

Coffee lovers, you're going to lose it over these little balls of joy! Made with just 5 ingredients and in under 15 minutes, your sweet tooth is going to love you! 100g ground almonds 15g cocoa 54g chocolate protein powder OR 2 more TBSP cocoa and a tbsp of honey 50g dark chocolate (i used 75% dark) 100ml cooled espresso or very strong coffee Set aside your chocolate for now, get your dry ingredients in a bowl and mix. Now get your cooled coffee and chuck it in. Mix it up until you get a play doh consistency that you can roll into balls. If it it is too crumbly then add a little more water at a time until you get it. Once you're happy with it, roll into 10 balls and sit on some baking paper. Now melt your chocolate. You can do it however you like (Bain Marie, microwave etc) but if you use a microwave, make sure to stop it regularly and stir a little to make sure it doesn't burn. Once it's all melted, grab 2 forks, drop a ball in and the on lift it out, giving it a moment to drain off the excess. Pop back on the baking sheet and repeat. You can add a cheeky little coffee bean or chocolate shaped one on top if you're feeling fancy!!

Food Cash for Kids at Avenue 141 LOOP magazine were wow'd by the students at Avenue 141 restaurant, fine dining at Fareham College at a charity dinner and auction to raise money for Wave 105 Cash for Kids. In total they raised £2512.94! All going to Wave 105 Cash for Kids. The main focus of the evening was young people helping to raise money for other young people in their local area. And the food was amazing! We highly reccomend a visit.

Jane Devonshire, winner of MasterChef UK 2016 will be making an appearance at the 2019 New Forest and Hampshire County Show which is taking place on 30th, 31st July & 1st August. Jane will be cooking live at The Kitchen by Chewton Glen in the Local Produce Market on Wednesday 31st July at 1.30pm. Jane will be cooking with fresh locally sourced produce from across Hampshire. Visitors can meet Jane Devonshire after her demonstration at the Hampshire Fare stand in the Local Produce Market where she will be selling and signing copies of her new book ‘hassle free gluten free’. Since winning MasterChef in 2016, Jane Devonshire has taken the bull by the food horns and tested herself further by working with a number of top chefs including Marcus Wareing, Atul Kochhar, Jason Atherton, Michel Roux and Michael O’Hare at their restaurants. Since MasterChef’ inception, over 300 million viewers worldwide have tuned in to watch contestants transform their lives through a passion for cooking and the phenomenon shows no signs of slowing down. Jane has presented at numerous food and drink shows around the UK, including the BBC Good Food Show. Her travels have taken her from Edinburgh to Brighton, in the course of which she has developed a love for presenting her recipes and chatting to people about food. This year Jane will be adding the New Forest Show to the list. Focaccia bread Ingredients

• 4 cups all-purpose flour • 2 teaspoons kosher salt • 2¼ teaspoons instant yeast (1 packet) • 2 cups warm tap water • 1 teaspoon butter for greasing pan • 4 tablespoons olive oil divided • Italian seasoning or finely chopped fresh herbs • flaky sea salt Prepare the dough: 1. In a medium-large bowl, combine flour, salt, and instant yeast. Stir well. Add the warm water. Using a Danish Whisk, sturdy wooden spoon or a rubber spatula, mix until all of the flour is incorporated. Cover the bowl with a plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 8 hours and up to 24 hours. 2. Lightly butter two 9-inch cake pans. Line pans with parchment paper. Pour one tablespoon of olive oil into the center of each pan. Divide dough in half with a large spoon or rubber spatula and place one piece of dough in each pan, turning to coat with oil. Tuck edges of dough underneath to form a rough ball. Cover each pan tightly with plastic wrap and allow the dough balls to rest for 2 hours depending. The dough should cover most of the pan. Bake: 1. Preheat oven to 450˚F with a rack positioned in the center of the oven. 2. Drizzle another tablespoon of oil over each round of dough. With oiled fingers, using both hands, press straight down and create deep dimples that go all the way through the dough (in other words, you'll actually be making deep holes.) If necessary, gently stretch the dough as you dimple to allow the dough to fill the pan. 3. Sprinkle tops with Italian seasoning (or fresh herbs) and flaky sea salt. 4. Transfer the pans to the oven and immediately reduce the temperature to 425˚F. Bake for 22 to 28 minutes, until the tops are golden and the undersides are crisp. Remove pans from the oven. With a metal spatula remove bread rounds from the pans and transfer to a cooling rack. 5. Serve warm or allow to cool completely then store in a zippered bag.

Smoked cheddar and spring onion cakes Ingredients • • • • • • • •

700/800g jersey royal potatoes 160g smoked cheddar or vegetarian alternative Generous knob of butter 2 heaped tsp English mustard Bunch of spring onions Seasoned plain flour for dusting Good splash of olive oil Chopped walnuts and crisp leaves to serve

Peel the potatoes, cutting any large ones in half. Put in a pan of lightly salted water and bring to the boil. Simmer for 15 minutes or until completely tender, then drain and return to a low heat to steam dry. Grate the cheddar or vegetarian alternative into the potato with a good knob of butter and 2 heaped tsp wholegrain mustard, then pass through a ricer or push through a metal sieve with the back of a spoon. Season generously. Trim and finely chop a bunch of spring onions, then stir through. When the mash has cooled slightly, shape into 8 small cakes, then dust lightly in the seasoned plain flour. Heat a good splash of olive oil in a pan and fry the cakes for 5 minutes on each side or until golden and crisp, though soft in the centre, flipping over carefully with a fish slice or palette knife. Fry in batches with extra oil if necessary. Serve with a salad of chopped walnuts and crisp leaves.

Cohabitation Agreements It is now very common for people in relationships to cohabit instead of marrying and to cohabit before marriage. There is no such thing as a common law husband or wife – this is an urban myth! The law does not give cohabitees the same rights to financial support or to share in their partner’s assets on the breakdown of their relationship, in the same way as spouses. Cohabitation agreements are mostly sought by couples who have decided to live together but not marry or enter into a civil partnership but who want to regulate their financial and living arrangements both during the period of cohabitation and should it come to an end. The cohabitation agreement can be executed even after cohabitation has begun. A cohabitation agreement records arrangements between people who have chosen to live together. It records each party’s rights and responsibilities in relation to the property where they live or intend to live together, financial arrangements between them, both during and following cohabitation and the arrangements to be made if they decide that they no longer want to live together. A cohabitation agreement can be used to record ownership of assets such as property, cars, furniture, art etc which may be used or enjoyed by both parties when they live together, but perhaps are to be retained by the owner if cohabitation ends. The potential benefits of entering into cohabitation agreements are financial planning, avoiding litigation and protection of assets. The purpose of a cohabitation agreement is to give parties the flexibility and freedom to organise their financial affairs as they wish both during and following cohabitation and to record the cohabiting couple’s intentions about the legal and beneficial ownership of real and personal property with the aim of reducing the possibility of a dispute about ownership if cohabitation ends. Such agreements also try to identify and protect investments and contributions that you have either brought into the relationship or have contributed significantly towards during the relationship. This is very common where there is a property often where one party has paid a significant contribution, or a party has received a gift or a loan from family, or where parties are beginning a new relationship following a divorce and they wish to safeguard their own financial security and protect a future inheritance for their children. Parties considering a cohabitation agreement should be aware of the uncertainty regarding enforceability of terms of a cohabitation agreement and that it is essential that such agreements are drafted carefully to comply with ordinary rules of contract in order to reduce the risk of them being challenged. It is important to ensure that the agreement is negotiated and signed after a sufficient cooling off period has elapsed.

Telephone Fraud

If you have a caller display facility on your landline and you see what looks like an incoming UK mobile or landline number, please don’t take it for granted that it actually is. Fraudsters can ‘spoof’ number so that people receiving the call think they are dealing with someone genuine. When this happens with a call made to your mobile phone – it can even show the name as ‘Bank’ if that is how you have it stored in your mobile, leading you to think it’s a genuine call from your bank, when it isn’t. Do not confirm anything and do not start any process. This trick is often used when fraudsters will have successfully hacked a person’s email or other account, so they can speak with authority about financial transactions you have made recently, leading you to think you are speaking with someone genuine. The Telephone Preference Service cannot protect you from these types of calls, as they are there to ensure genuine companies do not make contact if you have registered to opt out of receiving unsolicited calls. The advice is simple, never enter into any business with someone who you cannot 100% verify. Call your bank using a number you have sourced yourself, or better still, visit your bank in person. Remember • Banks will never call you to get you to transfer money or ask for your PIN • Police will never call you to assist in an investigation regarding money, jewellery or debit/credit cards • HMRC will never call you to tell you they have an arrest warrant for you because you have an outstanding tax bill Visit Action Fraud for more advice and to sign up for alerts on the latest scams. Finance & Legal Bobby Scheme offers home safety advice The Bobby Scheme is a free practical service providing reassurance and a sense of security to vulnerable people in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight within their own home. The scheme aims to bring peace of mind and reduce the fear of crime, particularly for elderly people and victims of burglary and domestic abuse. It is the charitable arm of the Blue Lamp Trust and is supported by Hampshire Constabulary and Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service. How does it work? A full crime prevention and fire safety survey is carried out by one of the schemeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s trained, police-vetted fitters. They will provide both general and specific crime and fire prevention advice to improve home safety. When appropriate, they will fit such items as locks, spy-holes, door chains and smoke alarms. This service is completely free.

The Blue Lamp Trust can supply and fit police approved key safes for a small donation. The Blue Lamp Trust also gives talks at community groups to offer advice about home crime and fire prevention. Your New Guide to Legal Matters starts here With the first discussion in this new feature having a focus on separated parents. IN BRIEF: Parenting Plans

How can you make parenting decisions after a divorce or separation? As parents it can be difficult to agree on decisions relating to your children, but if you have separated it can be even harder. Communication is not always easy for parents living apart and sometimes the welfare of the children can get lost in the battle of wills as to who is right or who wins. Unfortunately, when it comes to children there isn’t always a clear path to right or wrong and the only losers are the children. But there are options available to help you navigate through dual parenting. So what do you do? Whether you are the main carer or the non-resident parent it can be difficult to talk to the other parent, but what you need to know is that parents with Parental Responsibility both have equal weight as regards the care, education and general well being of the children and the non-resident parent should be considered and consulted on all issues relating to health, education and religion. However, due to many possible reasons, this is not always practical. So what do you do? A Parenting Plan is the simplest, easiest and most cost-effective option available to parents who live apart. A Parenting Plan is a document which is devised and agreed between the parents and can incorporate as much or as little detail pertaining to the care of the children as you desire. If you are worried about sitting down with each other on your own then you can enlist the assistance of a friend, family or lawyers to aid in this process.

The main thing to remember here is that a Parenting Plan is voluntary and formed by agreement. It is not a legally binding or enforceable document, but rather a tool for separated parents to agree a way forward. Your Parenting Plan can include, but is not limited to: • Who the children are to live with; • When, where and how often the non-resident • parent will spend time (contact) with the children; • Contact collection and drop off times, locations and how this will be shared; • If the children are to see grandparents and/or other family, where, when and for how long this will be; • School holiday contact and care; • Arrangements and details to be provided in • relation to holidays either within or outside of the UK; • Where the children should go to school; • What religion, if any, the children will practice; • Child maintenance: when and how it will be paid, and recourse fo non-payment; • Communication and how you intend to address disputes, disagreements or any issues and/or difficulties that may arise. There are many benefits to having a Parenting Plan, including: • An agreed plan of action to resolve issues or • difficulties, including what form of communication to use, such as telephone, text or email; • It can help reduce hostilities; • You devise and agree a plan regarding the care and welfare of your children together; • Expectations, duties and responsibilities are • discussed and agreed between you; • Open discussions can reduce or prevent future conflict.

Pumas are ready for the new season... are you!! As the rugby season drew to a close the Pumas reflected on what has been a great season and are preparing for the next come September. Our Chairman George Winch us looking forward to the continued growth of the rugby club but concerned over the lack of available rugby fields to offer rugby to the wider community. However, if his enthusiasm inspires you to play the game then come along during our summer events to try us out. You won’t be disappointed. George starts by saying, “Our 1XV have had a great season and finished a credible 4th in Hampshire 1 after a very tough campaign. Planning has already taken place for next season to get the Pumas in shape for the challenge of a new season. We have had great numbers join us at training all last year and this has helped us to continue to grow our senior sides. We have a young coaching team that work hard to deliver a good standard of rugby and these coaches are truly inspirational to help the Pumas improve our rugby. The players have a really developed a healthy attitude to their game and have shown real character and dug deep when needed. Our 2XV also had a great year by completing a full fixture programme without the need to cancel a single match. They also were promoted to Hampshire 3 and as we continue to grow this side will only get stronger having good competitive rugby. But that leaves a clear space for those members that want just social rugby as they cannot commit each weekend due to work or family commitments. So as long as the numbers are available, we plan to launch a 3XV within the Club. This team will enjoy playing as often as fixtures can be arranged and if the numbers are short, we will work with other rugby clubs to get enough players to fulfil a fixture. So, if you fancy returning back to rugby or you have always wanted to try, then now is your chance as we are a Club that will welcome you!! However, the summer months don’t stop us. We play Touch Rugby every Saturday during the summer starting at 10am at the Hunts Pond Road recreation space, Tichfield Common. The session is open to any member of the public (all abilities and genders very welcome) that may wish try Touch Rugby out. It’s non-contact and a great way to stay in shape. We will be running our Annual Touch Tournament on Saturday 6th July (again on Hunts Pond Road Recreation space) from 11am – 6pm and are welcoming squads of 10 players. Each squad has to be mixed (men and women) and have a 16-19 year old and over 40 player in the squad. It’s a great day out for you to take part in or to come along and watch. Our Pre-Season Training starts Tuesday 2nd July and all are welcome. Our sessions run Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7pm at Hook with Warsash School, Church Rd, Warsash SO31 9GF. The sessions are open to anyone wishing to see if they like the sport or work on their fitness. So, come and join us and find out what a friendly bunch we are and if you have children our successful Puma Cubs (minis and juniors) have just finished their second season. Hayley Selby as taken over the reigns as the new Chairperson and is looking forward to continuing the expansion of the Pumas into all the lower age groups. Hayley says “formed in August 2017, the first-year year for the “Puma Cubs” were a roller coaster ride! However, we now have many more volunteers working with the Puma Cubs each Sunday. The objective was to offer rugby for the children to a new local audience, and following an initial Internet campaign, coupled with a recruitment day held at the Whitley Shopping Centre, led to taster sessions being run within the Locks Heath ward. Meanwhile, contact had been made with Hook-withWarsash School and the Puma Cubs have a very safe environment for the Puma Cubs to play. The Puma Cubs membership rises each week with some 100 children actively involved. Over the summer months, we will be holding more recruitment drives and some fun session that are free to the general public. Our pledge to the parents was to promote Safety, Fun and Rugby. To that end we will continue to work hard over the summer to get many of our new coaches onto the required RFU Coaching and First Aid courses. Finally, though we need YOUR SUPPORT!! The only rugby pitch in the Western Wards was at Brookfield School and unfortunately, they are converting this ground to another football area. This is a massive disappointment for the Pumas!! So we need help on any landowner who can help us gain a pitch area and work with us to develop the right facilities to help our senior and junior players. How did they know they liked chocolate? They tried it!

I remember seeing a flyer for a children's rugby taster session organised by Locks Heath Pumas a few years ago. I asked our boys if they’d like to give it a go and with a little encouragement, they agreed. I have to say that rugby was not my thing at school and had still eluded me up until now. I was aware of the excellent reputation that rugby had from a ‘sportsmanship’ point of view so was keen for my children to experience that. Those first taster sessions were a fantastic foundation for what has followed. Three years later, Locks Heath Pumas Cubs has gone from strength to strength with over 100 children and their families enjoying the weekly training sessions held at Hook-with-Warsash C of E Academy. The club is growing quickly as word is spreading. During the rugby season (Sep-May), the Puma Cubs train every Sunday from 10.00-11.00am with RFU (Rugby Football Union) trained and qualified coaches. The Cubs are separated into age specific groups based on their school year group. Naturally all coaches are DBS checked by the Puma Safe Guarding Officer, whose role is in place to protect the children. The framework for the training is all based around the RFU core values: Teamwork, Respect, Enjoyment, Discipline and Sportsmanship (TREDS). On several dates out of season, the club run ‘fun’ sessions where rugby is played along with a few games to keep the Cubs entertained and for us all to keep in touch.” What's unique about the Pumas is how genuinely friendly it is. Everyone goes to great lengths to ensure new families feel welcome and the overall experience for both the children and their families is as positive as possible. The hot drinks and bacon butties go a long way to keeping us parents happy and whilst the Club don’t charge, they are grateful for any donations you choose to make. I can honestly say that of all the local clubs my children have attended, Locks Heath Puma Cubs is the one they are most happiest at.

With Louis Suffill...

My name is Louis Suffill. I’m 21 years old and I am currently studying Multimedia Journalism at Southampton Solent University. My main passion is music. When I’m not at uni I can be found either playing guitar or listening to music or editing photos of gigs I’ve been to. I only really stated to take an interest in music after the first time I listened to The Sgt Pepper album by The Beatles when I was 12.

After that I started listening to all kinds of music, I could get my hands on. My favourite genre is punk rock and my favourite bands are My Chemical Romance, The Cure, Greedy and Creeper. I recently started a punk band with some friends and I am also looking to start an acoustic project. I’ve always been fascinated by how theatrical bands can be onstage and so this is what started an interest in photography of bands for me. I think it’s important to capture moments in photos because when I think back to 12-year-old me I couldn’t afford to go and see the bands I liked and so photos were the best thing I had so I think it’s important to take photos of musicians and gigs.

British To Spanish. A Music Comparison

All music is different. That’s simply a fact. Different instruments different styles, the list goes on. Two contrasting types of music I want to look at are British and Spanish.A lot of British music is derived from many different cultures and the people who bought their own native styles. Spain has also a long history of foreign influence in both culture and music which has evolved to create its own sound and identity. A lot of other styles such as rap, hip-hop and rock n’ roll have inspired Spanish versions; however, the differences still remain. Now, you could fill a book with all the different aspects of these two styles of music, but as I’m only looking at the main aspects, a good place to start would be with cultural impact.A lot of British music is typically about people expressing their struggles, opinions and collective goals through music. Therefore, the cultural impact has been so strong, the music has helped shape the country. Spanish music is often associated with spiritual dances and celebrations rather than cultural discourse. Spanish music typically fuels more communal live events such as bullfights, carnivals and fiestas which are common in Spain. Another thing to look at is the instrumentation, or more specifically the guitar. Spain has been credited as crafting the acoustic and classical guitar.

Listen to almost any flamenco music and you will recognise that particular guitar sound as soon as it comes in. This is not to say British music doesn’t use guitars, almost every band will have a guitarist, but in British music it is sometimes more subtle. Just listen to Twenty-One Pilots. Also, the electric guitar can claim to make more of an impact in British music. We were using it as far back as the 50’s and 60’s with bands as diverse as The Beatles and The Shadows. Another difference is modification within the music. A lot of British music promotes sound rather than substance. Often lyrics just don’t seem to matter. Record labels are looking for the next ‘club banger’, something to get people moving and onto their feet and so modifiers and synthesizers are used and so modification of voices and instruments are common. Whilst Spain does produce the same type of music, the typical Spanish style focuses more on the instrumentation and the natural sound of the instrument. This also showcases the talent of the artist whereas in my opinion a lot of club music is produced by people with little to no musical talent. It is very rare to find typical Spanish music that uses synthesizers and modifiers. So, it’s clear to see that there are many similarities and differences. Take a typical British song like an early Beatles song and it is easy to compare it to something like “Entre dos aguas” by Paco De Lucia right through to “Despacito” by Luis Fonsi. Of course you don’t have to take my word for it but you should definitely listen to both types of music and see whether you agree with me or not.

Myriad Launch Their Campaign Supporting Southampton’s Music Scene •

Myriad Highlight the Individuals Who Keep the Music Scene Alive in the Run-up to their Upcoming of life to the song’s meaning, flipping lyrics on their head in Single.

Myriad have taken photos with 12 influential music industry individuals who all represent different • important aspects of Southampton’s music scene. • The band use their platform to spread awareness about what these people are doing for the music community. • Myriad relate the campaign to their new song • “Castle of Sand.” • From grassroots music venues, to sound guys, to promoters, to BBC Introducing, Myriad have all aspects of the Southampton music scene covered. [SOUTHAMPTON, HAMPSHIRE, 22nd APRIL 2019] Myriad are giving back to the Southampton music scene by taking photos with 12 people who play a big part in the city’s growing music community and writing short features online (on their social media) on each of them explaining how they impact the local scene. The entire campaign occured over 12 days (from 13th-24th April) . This is all happening because, as a band, Myriad feel like they have a platform where they can promote the work that all of these people do behind the scenes. They want as many people to get on board as possible, spreading awareness of these people all around Southampton and Hampshire and writing about what they do. As a band, Myriad know that this entire campaign would be incomplete without a song to go along with it. Originally about a tenuous relationship, Myriad have taken their song “Castle of Sand” and have brought a new lease

The lyrics in the chorus for example “This Castle of Sand wasn’t built to last, you said let’s make a new start” are taken from being negative to a positive when relating it to the Southampton music scene; it’s so important to realise that any music scene nowadays is hard to maintain - venues are disappearing left and right all over the UK (including Southampton’s own The Talking Heads last year). Myriad use the “Castle of Sand” as a metaphor for the music scene being fragile, but it stands strong when people hold it up. This is exactly why Myriad chose to have people holding up letters spelling out “Castle of Sand.” Myriad realise that coming together, making a “new start” and working as a community is always the way forward. Myriad go into detail on many other lyrics relate to the music scene in “Castle of Sand” in their interview on Steph Nieuwenhuys’s Early Late Show (being broadcast on the 25th April). Their song “Castle of Sand” is out on Friday 26th April. To sum up the project, Myriad realise that the Southampton music scene has really come to life in the past few years, and the individuals who work hard to keep it thriving absolutely need to be recognised and talked about. Music Festivals TICKET SALES BOOM FOR WICKHAM FESTIVAL

The Wickham Festival is heading for a sell-out! The four-day event, being held from Thursday August 1 to Sunday August 4, is reporting record sales. The event’s strongest ever line-up has sparked a huge surge in sales and fans are being warned not to leave it too late to buy tickets. Thousands have already booked to see headliners including Frank Turner and the Sleeping Souls, the Proclaimers, Judy Collins, Graham Nash, Gilbert O’Sullivan, Level 42 and Hollywood icon Kiefer Sutherland. Organiser Peter Chegwyn said: “There is a very real possibility that for the first time ever all four days could sell out completely. “We still have tickets for all nights but people should buy in advance as there is a strong chance we won’t have tickets on sale on the gate as in previous years. “We have already sold more tickets at this stage of the year than ever before which is hardly surprising given the quality of the line-up which is comfortably the best yet. “There has been huge interest in this year’s event with people coming from all parts of the country and across Europe so there is sure to be a fantastic atmosphere. I really believe this will be our best festival yet.” Other top acts include: Alabama 3, Ralph McTell, Afro Celt Sound System. The Men They Couldn’t Hang, Steve Knightley, Stanley Jordan, Grace Petrie and many others. There will also be late-night comedy once again for those who want to stay up and enjoy another drink before turning in. And with an additional 28 acres of camping provided, there will be more space than ever before. This year there will be two main Big Tops of equal billing with two smaller stages to provide more variety and provide a platform for local acts. News from the West Meon Music Festival 2019

West Meon Music Festival is to the manor born This year’s West Meon Music is delighted to welcome actor Peter Bowles, who will be the narrator in a rare performance of Richard Strauss’ “Enoch Arden” – a dramatic setting of Tennyson’s 1897 poem.The festival opens on Friday 13 September with a candlelit concert of classical favourites performed by various members of the Primrose Piano Quartet, who founded the event in 2011. The evening includes Beethoven’s renowned “Kreutzer” Sonata for violin and piano and piano trios by Brahms and Schubert. Booking for the festival – now in its ninth year – opens on 1 June with an exciting line-up of great chamber music, masterclasses with talented young musicians, a recital by an award winning young harpist and that evening of “Music and Melodrama” with Peter Bowles – regularly performing on the West End stage but perhaps still remembered by many for his television roles in “The Irish RM” and “To the Manor Born”.

Saturday morning is devoted to masterclasses for local young musicians (free entry for the audience), with “Rising Star” harpist Gabriella Jones performing at nearby East Meon church in the afternoon, before Saturday evening’s “Music and Melodrama” when Peter Bowles and the quartet’s pianist, John Thwaites, will be discussing the work and other musical dramas in a pre-concert talk. Sunday’s musical treats start with a “coffee concert” in the morning which include Rebecca Clarke’s famed Viola Sonata – often described as a jewel in the instrument’s repertoire; followed by a lunchtime showing of the classic Enoch Arden film from 1911, and the afternoon’s “Festival Finale” ends with Brahms’ Piano Quintet Op.34 – generally regarded as "the crown of his chamber music” – when the Primrose will be joined by Jenny Sacha, best known as the first violin of the highly regarded Pavão Quartet. As in previous years the festival will also be raising funds for the Petersfield-based Rosemary Foundation which provides a hospice at home service throughout the surrounding areas. Don’t miss the biggest spectacle on the Hamble River this year The HRSC Centenary Parade of Sail The Hamble River Sailing Club (HRSC) is aiming to attract 100 boats to take part in its centenary sail past on the 6 August, to mark the very day the club was founded in 1919. HRSC is oldest surviving sailing club on the Hamble River and has been an integral part of the community ever since. The event is intended to provide a spectacle for residents and to celebrate the wonderful life we all enjoy here, on and around the river. It is also being held to show appreciation to HRSC members and other River Hamble Combined Clubs for their continued support over the years. “We encourage everyone to head down to the Hamble and Warsash shoreline to enjoy what we hope will be a magnificent atmosphere and sail by,” comments Steph Merry, Commodore of HRSC. “Spectators will see more than 100 boats hold centre stage and provide a spectacle of noise and colour as they sail up the river. This is one event you shouldn’t miss!” The event will take place on Tuesday 6 August at around HW Portsmouth (16.45).

Follow Hamble River Sailing Club on Facebook for updates on this event. Be part of it… Anyone with a boat on the Hamble River is invited to join the parade to celebrate this momentous occasion. People of all ages are encouraged to get involved, and baby dinghies through to super yachts are welcome. The smaller of the fleet will sail inshore on both the Hamble and Warsash side, with the larger boats in the main channel. The parade will proceed past the platform of HRSC Club House where a salute will be taken, then past Hamble Quay and up to a point north of Hamble Yacht Services, where boats will disperse. Everyone will be encouraged to dress in the HRSC colours of red, white and blue, and display Club flags if they have them. If you are interested in being part of this significant event, you are urged to register as soon as possible so that the Club can track progress towards their goal of 100 boats. ASSISTANCE dog charity Canine Partners are inviting families and their pet dogs to their Southern Training Centre this summer to join in the fun at their annual dog show. Locals are expected to attend the Family Fun Pet Dog Show near Midhurst, West Sussex, on Saturday 20 July with their pet dogs to raise vital funds for the local-based assistance dog charity. “Our Family Fun Pet Dog Show is the perfect opportunity to gather friends and family for a great day out whilst supporting a local charity,” says Gemma Tupper, Community Fundraiser for the South and Wales. “It’s not all about the dogs as there is plenty of fun activities and games to keep the kids entertained plus some delicious food and refreshments.” The dog show includes categories such as ‘Most handsome chap’, ‘Loveliest lady’ and ‘Best rescue’. Canine Partners is a national charity that trains amazing assistance dogs to transform the lives of people with disabilities, boosting their confidence and independence. The dogs are taught a range of everyday tasks including picking up and fetching items, opening doors and helping to undress a person. They can even help to load and unload a washing machine and they can fetch help in an emergency. With Autumn on the way and this, the ‘Harvest’ season in full swing, it doesn’t mean that we can’t plant anything. Certain types of broad bean and peas, garlic and onions can be sown soon as can shallots – perhaps the latter two might benefit from starting off indoors in pots. Spring Cabbage and Kale seedlings can be planted out, too. Even Lettuce can be sown indoors. Also, indoors, you could plant a spud in a 17ltr bag of light compost which may be O.K. for Christmas. Growing potatoes in bags seems to be de rigeur these days and well worth a try for 2020. Look at RHS.org. How did plants evolve, and why did we end up with our wonderful world as we see it now? Some plants have changed us and the world. On Wednesday 25th September Rosina Brandham will tell you about; “Plants which changed the World and the way we live”. With the world changing fast, at least we will know how it all happened up until recent times.
