Has your house got the ‘Home Appeal’? Congratulations! You made the big decision to sell your home. Well, whether you are just about to phone your estate agent to begin the process or have been trying for some time to unsuccessfully to get that sale, I encourage you to read on. What is the most common mistake sellers make? The answer is fairly simple: they assume that, because they are comfortable in their own home and love it just the way it is, a prospective buyer will feel the same way. Nothing could be further from the truth. Buyers need to be able to visualise themselves and their things in a home, before even thinking of making an offer. They have to be able to see it as theirs not yours. “First impressions are often what make or break a sale” By following a few simple, common-sense tips….you will be able to get the highest and best price for your home and get it fast. Exteriors: ‘Kerb Appeal’ is critical when selling your house, don’t ever underestimate the importance of how it looks from the outside. What use is a perfect designerstyle interior, if the outside of your house is so scruffy that prospective buyers drive right past. Are the boundaries clear? Invest in some fencing, a brick wall or hedging plants. Mow the lawn, tidy the edges and prune trees that block the view of the house. Even invest in some attractive bedding plants. Make sure the paintwork is in good repair, mend broken guttering and think about painting or re-varnishing the front door. Cleaning windows can make a huge difference too. Entrances: Stepping into the entrance hall will create a lasting impression on your potential buyer. Remember the hall is the space that sets the mood for the rest of the house. First of all remove any clutter. Having done that, look at the walls, strongly patterned wallpaper or bold colours can be overpowering and feel claustrophobic. Paint in a neutral shade where possible.
Maximise the available light, by cleaning windows and adding a well-placed mirror. Remember too, it’s not an art gallery, don’t overcrowd it with pictures and personal photos. Reception Rooms: Get rid of all of the junk! Old magazines, bags of knitting, children’s toys – everything must go. Remove all evidence of your pets and any lingering smells. Weed out crowded bookshelves, the same goes for that CD and DVD collection. If shelves, like rooms, look crowded, it gives the impression that there isn’t enough storage space. If you’ve made a bold statement with your choice of wallpaper or paint, it makes sense to redecorate in a neutral colour.
Kitchens: The kitchen is probably the biggest selling ticket you’ve got, so make the most of it! As with every room: remove all superficial clutter, including those jolly fridge magnets, letters on the fridge door and all evidence of your children and your hectic social life. Then you must clean, clean and clean again! These days people want light, bright, spacious kitchens, so if you have used a strong wall colour, it would be wise to repaint in a safe neutral colour subtly echoing the colour in the tiles or curtains. Work space is at a premium, so double check that you’ve cleared the worktops of all inessential items, thought a bowl of fruity or a vase of flowers can make a nice finishing touch. Disguise a well-used kitchen table with a table cloth or a length of colourful PVC and make sure that the waste bin is empty. Bedrooms: Always remember the importance of the master bedroom! A buyer won’t want a room which leaves their nerves jangling from the unexpected combinations of bright colours, or one that gives the impression of being in ‘a storeroom with a bed squeezed in the corner’. Once again, it’s a question of clearing all the clutter out of the way, and creating the illusion of space and calm.

Having cleared the room, look at it objectively. What will the colours say to another person? It only takes a lick of paint to turn your funky choice of wallpaper into something more neutral. A fresh new rug can add a splash of colour to the room, as well as cover up any bits of carpet that have seen better days. Bathrooms: It is absolutely essential that your bathroom gets the same TLC treatment. Make the room as clean as possible. Clean the bath, basin and lavatory for all you are worth. For tiles, clean the grouting between them, remove any lime-scale marks, and replace any missing ones. Paint the walls a soft, light colour, and double check the flooring, too. Grubby toothpaste stained carpet is a real turn-off, as is curling linoleum. It may be worthwhile replacing it. Again remove all the clutter, including your well used toothbrush and collection of shampoos and deodorants. Get rid of what you can and hide the rest in a basket or medicine cabinet on the wall. Gardens: It’s easy to overlook a garden, when selling a house, but it can be a huge asset. It should be seen as another room, which can be enjoyed just as much.

If yours has been taken over by children and pets, have a look at the state they’ve left it in. If you’ve got too many plastic bikes and outdoor play things? Invest in a small shed to hide them away. Clear up all pet mess, and re-turf any areas that have turned into muddy football pitches. Repair fences, broken walls, and take any rubbish to the tip. Prune overgrown tress and bushes. And finally add some patio furniture and the odd flower basket.

Record crowds for James Blunt at this year’s Wickham Festival James Blunt helped to make this year’s festival the best yet, according to organisers The international superstar drew a record crowd of 7,000 on the opening night and gave a stunning 90-minute show to delight fans who braved the rain. His presence also boosted the profile of the festival drawing fans from as far away as America and Australia to the tiny Hampshire village. Organiser Peter Chegwyn said: “The festival has been a fantastic success, our best ever with record ticket sales and record numbers of fans. “Getting James Blunt was a real coup and really put Wickham on the map. He was a delight to work with and made a point of saying how much he enjoyed the festival. He really put on a superb show which thrilled not just his diehard fans but also those less familiar with his music. “It has given us a real problem for next year because how

Hamble over the years Ian Underdown, who is Chairman of the Hamble Local History Society and has lived in Hamble all his life, tells us that prior to the early 1900s it was a small village with a significant maritime heritage. As early as 1346 Hamble supplied 7 ships & 117 mariners for the Battle of Crecy and in the 1700s it built sailing vessels for the Royal Navy. Various maritime activities and agriculture provided its residents with employment. In the 1800s it was an important fishing community and in 1842 it supplied 90,000 lobsters and crabs to the metropolitan markets. Most of its shellfish was not caught locally but brought from the West Country, Ireland, France and Norway.
Regattas at Hamble can be traced back to 1868 and have provided its residents and mariners with enjoyment and prize money over the years. It developed into a large event in the area with royalty attending in the 1870s. These regattas included sailing, rowing and various aquatic events such as walking a greasy pole over the water to win a pig in a basket at the end.
From the late 1880s to the Second World War, Luke Brothers built all sizes of yachts and motorboats up to 70ft and also offered its customers boat maintenance, moorings, mud berths, ashore storage and chandlery. After the Second World War the Fairey Aviation factory became Fairey Marine which was to become the largest boat building company in Europe. Ian’s first memory of the river in the 1950s was an open view of b*oats moored on individual moorings and even the posh owner had to be taken out to their large boat by their skipper or local boatman, either in a dinghy or a small motor launch. Local boatmen and sailing clubs helped the village’s children develop their interest and skills in this leisure activity. During this decade Hamble had over 25 shops serving the community, as well as other businesses. It also had horse drawn carts or motor vans delivering milk, bread, fish and other products. Over the years these reduced with improved transport out of the village and the introduction of supermarkets. In the 1960s and early 1970s Hamble was at the forefront of the development
Around the First World War the village’s population greatly increased with the coming of the aviation industry. Avro and Fairey Aviation built factories during the war, attracted by the appropriate local skills of the boatbuilding industry and its location being particularly suitable for seaplanes. Other aircraft factories followed, as well as Air Service Training which trained civil and military pilots from all over the world and became known as Britain’s Air University. In 1960 it was taken over by the College of Air Training to train pilots for the national airlines. Hamble had its own maritime educational establishment, TS Mercury that train boys for the Royal and Merchant navies.

The village subsequently developed with large factory sites changed to accommodate small businesses, including Ensign Business Park which is today the home of contact lens maker, CooperVision, which is the largest employer in the Borough of Eastleigh. New homes were built on the land of the former airfield buildings, the last farm meadow and other sites, as Hamble is a very attractive and popular place for people to live. Today Hamble is one of the country’s leading yachting centres. It has three marinas, three yacht/sailing clubs and a multitude of marine based industries such as boat builders, sail makers, riggers, chandlers, yacht agencies, boat charters. The yacht/sailing clubs organise nationally renowned sailing regattas and events. Hamble is visited by thousands of people throughout the year. The majority are yachting and boating people using the river and its facilities, although many are just casual visitors possibly discovering the delightful old
village centre or the quay, foreshore and waterfront. There are public houses, restaurants and other similar businesses to cater for the visitors. Ian says that residents who have lived in the village for many years are trying to retain Hamble’s village character and the river for everyone to enjoy, including non boat owners, so that it does not become just a boat park. Hamble is a lovely place to live.

Free Dog Microchipping at Harrier Veterinary Surgery Throughout September 2014! Microchipping will be compulsory for all dogs in England from April 2016 and Wales from April 2015. Last year 111,986 stray and abandoned dogs were picked up by Local Authorities across the UK, with only 40% reunited with their owners. With support from the Dog’s Trust, Harrier Veterinary Surgery in Hamble, Southampton are offering FREE Microchipping throughout September. From 1st til 30th September, any local dog owner can contact the surgery to have their dog chipped. Microchips offer a range of benefits, not least the potential to reunite a lost pet with its owner.
The dog owner’s contact details relating to each number are logged on a central database, so should the dog ever go missing or be stolen it can be scanned by the authorities and returned to his owner swiftly and safely. It is vital that the owner takes responsibility for updating their details with the database should their circumstances change.

All aboard for a fantastic family festival at this year’s PSP Southampton Boat Show 15 August 2014 – The internationally renowned PSP Southampton Boat Show unveils its plans for the 46th annual event. As one of Europe’s biggest outdoor boat shows, visitors will be treated to an array of exciting attractions, exhilarating experiences and world-class boats, all set against a stunning backdrop of the Show’s spectacular marina. Running from Friday 12 September until Sunday 21 September 2014, the PSP Southampton Boat Show is the perfect opportunity for the whole family to banish those back-to-school blues with a fun-filled day out. This year’s event located at Southampton’s waterfront, boasts a number of new additions to the packed programme, not forgetting favourites from previous years. From boating accessories to superyachts, marine clothing to sailing holidays, the Show will offer everything needed to have fun whether on the water or land. For the first time in the history of the Show, visitors will be able to take to the air on the new PSP Southampton Boat Show Eye. The impressive ride will whisk guests more than 100 feet off the ground for a spectacular 360 degree view of the Show and surrounding Southampton area. Carol and Roy have for many years supported the Southampton hospital cancer care, because of all the help and care they gave their daughter in being treated for breast cancer; sadly she passed away. But in her memory they both strive to raise much needed funds for this wonderful cause. The Case of the Heart of Gold
In fairness to myself I must ask the reader to bear in mind that the following events took place in the early days of our friendship, before I had really got to know the man. A pleasant autumn afternoon found me working on some medical notes. Holmes lay on the chaise longue, deep in thought. He had been out all morning, on what business I had not ventured to enquire. Suddenly he sat up, and with a gesture towards the window, said, “Well, Watson, what do you make of that?” A heated argument had just broken out in the street below. “Why,” I replied, “it sounds like a dispute over a cab fare, between the driver and his passenger.” “That much is obvious. But what, from her voice, can you tell of that passenger?” “I should say she is quite young, quicktempered, assertive, and decidedly of the people – “bleedin’ daylight robbery” is hardly a term one associates with ladies.” Thinking I had done rather well, I was disappointed when Holmes merely said, “You can deduce nothing more?” “Why, no; not without going to the window and taking a look at her.” “Pray do not trouble yourself, my dear fellow. I can tell you that she is in her early twenties and has a fine Junoesque figure. Her dark-green dress, which goes well with her abundant auburn hair, displays rather more décolletage and silk-stockinged ankle than we are used to seeing in Baker Street. She wears long black gloves, and her elegant shoes were not fashioned with very much walking in mind.” Although I had known him for only a short time, I was already familiar with Holmes’s amazing powers of observation and deduction; but this defied belief. “You recognize this person’s voice, Holmes,” I said accusingly, “and happen to know her preferred mode of attire.” “I assure you, the voice, for all its considerable volume, is quite unknown to me.” He held my incredulous gaze for several seconds before bursting into laughter. “Ah, Watson, I confess I am teasing you; for although the young lady is indeed a stranger to me, I am confident

I got to my feet. “Perhaps I should leave you for a while, Holmes?” “My dear fellow, by no means. In fact it is I who must leave you for the moment; I need to effect a little disguise.” That he should engage in deception only served to deepen my worst suspicions. “But I say, look here, Holmes – “ He cut me short with a wave of his hand. “Listen. Our housekeeper has been given her instructions, and I want you, Watson, to receive the young lady. Tell her that she will not be kept waiting long. On no account are you to mention my name.” I readily assured him that neither of our names would be mentioned by me. “Excellent, Watson. You may refer to me as your “noble friend”… Well, it sounds as though the cab fare is finally being settled, so I will leave the lady in your capable hands. I am sure she would welcome a glass of sherry.” And with that, he retreated to his bedroom. The unseemly haggling had indeed come to an end. The cabby cracked his whip. “I bet it ain’t you what pays, anyway!” was his parting shot. The woman’s I shall not record. Soon there was a knock on the door and our worthy housekeeper primly asked if “a young female person with an appointment” might be admitted. The young person, I need hardly say, was just as Holmes had described. She turned to me with a dazzling smile, which was quickly replaced with a puzzled frown. “Pray be seated,” I said. “I have been instructed to offer you a glass of sherry.” Her expression brightened. “Oh, of course! you’d be one of his servants. A sherry? Thanks, I don’t mind if I do.” She

After sampling her drink (with evident relish), she added, “So, my good man, where’s your master got to, then?” “My friend will be joining us before long,” I replied coldly, unable to bring myself to include the epithet “noble.” “Friend? I hope I’m not expected to entertain two gentlemen!” I was spared having to make a reply, for, to my relief, Holmes now stood in the ill-lit doorway. In other circumstances I should not have recognized him. The master of disguise was wearing an elaborate frock-coat, a jet-black curly wig with sidewhiskers, and a thin waxed moustache. The woman sprang to her feet with a squeal of delight, uttered an indelicate term of endearment and twirled herself around several times. “Like the ensemble? You needn’t have sent that reminder. I hadn’t forgot what you said charmed you most particular.” I watched in dismay as she advanced towards Holmes, arms outstretched. She had almost reached him when she stopped abruptly. “’Ere, what’s going on?” she cried, the false accent now abandoned. “You’re not… What’s the bleedin’ game?” “I must apologize for the deception, Nellie,” said Holmes, removing the wig and moustache, “but I needed to be sure that I had got the right girl. Permit me to introduce myself: my name is Sherlock Holmes.” “I’ve heard of you – you’re one of those detectives. You’ve got nothing on me, Mr Holmes.” “Many people would be surprised, not to say alarmed, if they knew what I had “got on them,” young lady. But fear not, no harm shall come to you, provided you do none. I trust this sherry is to your liking? Allow me to refill your glass.” “Thanks, but listen – “ Holmes raised a masterful hand. “No, you listen, Nellie. I am going to tell you a story. Two evenings ago a young man, whose illustrious title we shall not mention, was led astray by some wild companions. Much the worse for drink, they visited what I shall delicately call a house of pleasure.
Now, this young man has a particular weakness for auburn-haired, curvaceous beauties like yourself.” “Thanks very much, I’m sure.” “Not at all. But alas, beauty and virtue do not always go together. When our misguided young man reached his apartments he discovered that his index finger lacked a ring – a large gold ring with a heart-shaped emblem. It was a gift from his loving mother and carries an inscription to that effect. I want that ring, Nellie.” “Who says I’ve got it?” “I do. I am assured that only the fair charmer I have described could have taken it. You are far too smart a girl to have involved the proprietress of the establishment, who would have cheated you as readily as she cheats her clientele.” I had to admire the subtle mixture of gallantry and firmness employed by Holmes. “Now,” he continued, “the son cannot long delay a meeting with his mother. The loss of her gift would cause her much pain, to say nothing of the circumstances of that loss! To business: I am authorised to offer you this purse of one hundred guineas for the return of that ring.” “A tidy little sum, Mr Holmes, but you’re asking me to give up what could be a nice steady source of income.” “Blackmail is a very serious crime, Nellie. Besides, you surely would not wish to distress a loving mother.” “He could tell her he was robbed at knife-point. We’ve all got to live, Mr Holmes. Why shouldn’t the money be spread around a bit more? No doubt you’re getting well paid for your services. I bet if it was some ordinary bloke you’d let him stew in his own juice.” “You do me an injustice, Nellie,” said Holmes, replenishing her glass yet again. “A recent somewhat similar case enabled me to be of service to a young man from a very impoverished background. A young man, moreover, who hails from the same district as yourself.” “You don’t say! Oh, how touching! I wasn’t born yesterday, Mr Holmes.” To my amazement, Holmes merely smiled at the brazen hussy’s impertinence. “You may even have heard of him,” he continued, “I speak of a certain flame-haired footballer.” Her eyes widened and her jaw dropped.
“Not… not “Carrots” Clooney?” Even I, a dedicated follower of rugger, was familiar with the name “Carrots” Clooney – the “flame-haired, frecklefaced fiend of the football field,” as one sports-writer had dubbed him. Taking the silence of Holmes as affirmation, the girl exclaimed, “The brilliant “Carrots” Clooney! Best footballer in England, they say! Oh, Mr Holmes, what did you do?” “It was a rather delicate matter…” “I swear I won’t blab. I can keep a secret – I do keep lots of them. My kid brother worships “Carrots” Clooney. He’d murder me if I did anything to harm him.” Holmes fixed his piercing gaze on the girl’s face. “Nellie, I am going to trust you. Clooney had been out celebrating what I believe is known as a “hat trick” when he became involved with a vicious woman of the very lowest sort; a woman, moreover, old enough to be his mother, adding the risk of derision to that of shame in the event of the encounter being made public. While he languished in a drunken stupor, she cut off a lock of the famous carroty hair as proof of their liaison. Now a victim of blackmail, he confessed all to his dear mother, who, as luck would have it, happened to be working as a skivvy at my lodgings. Having heard something of my work, she begged me to save her boy from ruin.” “Ruin?” I interjected. “Isn’t that pitching it a bit strong, Holmes? I mean, how can the poor be blackmailed.” “His fortunes were changing. You are evidently unaware, Watson, that today’s top footballer is often a professional, earning as much as a fully-skilled tradesman.” “For kicking a ball around on a Saturday afternoon! Surely not?” “Such, I assure you, is the case. But would the paying public forgive, or even care to watch, a player who had lapsed in this way?” “I take your point, Holmes. Our English football fans revere moral integrity as highly as good sportsmanship.” “Exactly, and their high expectations do them credit. But was the lad to lose the rewards of his talent because of one foolish mistake? I determined it should not be. By methods perhaps a little questionable, I obtained that incriminating lock of hair. Clooney, who had been sick with worry and quite off his game, swiftly went from strength to strength. His
widowed mother, who had once lived in dread of the workhouse, now runs a prosperous pie-shop adjacent to a large football stadium. His two sisters, their carroty hair expertly dyed blonde, their freckles concealed by the best cosmetics, have every chance of finding good husbands.” I was surprised to see that the girl actually had tears in her eyes. “Oh, Mr Holmes, I’m sorry. I thought you only worked for the police and the toffs. But you were prepared to listen to the troubles of a skivvy.” “A mother’s love is a sacred thing, Nellie. It is always much the same, be she in a pie-shop or a palace.” After some fumbling with the lining of her reticule, the girl withdrew a large gold ring. “Take it, Mr Holmes, you’re a good man.” “And you, Nellie, are a good girl,” said Holmes, discreetly handing her the bulging purse. “I knew your heart was in the right place.” “Thank you, kind sir. Well, gentlemen, I’ll bid you good day.” After a pause, she added coyly, “If there’s nothing else…? “Just one thing, Nellie,” replied Holmes. “As you said, we’ve all got to live – remember, that includes cabmen.” She winked. “Point taken, Mr Holmes. I might even give the next one a tip!” And with that, she was gone. “Well, Watson,” said Holmes, rubbing his hands in satisfaction, “I think we have earned ourselves a little treat. What do you say to a night at the opera?” “An excellent idea, Holmes.” “The Bohemian Girl is being performed at the Savoy; at Covent Garden it’s La Traviata… shall we say the former? I think we have had enough of fallen women for one day.” I readily concurred. And never again did I for one moment doubt the morals of the great man.

motoring Welcome to September’s Motoring Section. With the best of Summer behind us I’ve been looking back at what a great season it’s been. The South has been packed full of motoring events, which the sun has mostly shone for. For me at least, the summer has ended on a high - I’m delighted to say this issue of The Loop includes our first ever road test of a Jaguar no less. But here’s to looking ahead to Autumn. I always say nothing beats driving through the countryside in the Autumn...If only I could have the Jaguar back! Enjoy, Sam Mace, Motoring Editor
DRIVEN: The Jaguar XF Sportbrake
Ride and Handling The ‘S’ specification means this car benefits from a more sporting suspension set up. The ride is firmer than a standard XF, but the S still retains an excellent ride quality. The Sportbrake does a very good job of fending off harsh jolts and vibrations, and any bumps that do make it into the car are soaked up by the seats and cabin brilliantly.
Performance and economy The 3.0 V6 engine powering our test car is available in two states of tune: 240 BHP and 275 BHP. The car I drove was equipped with the more powerful of the two units. On the road, this translates into effective overtaking and instant, smooth acceleration. Slip roads are dispatched with ease and hills don’t require a change of gear to keep up good progress. Although you can override the eight speed automatic gearbox by using the paddle shifters to go up and down through the gears. This doesn’t come at the expense of sensible fuel consumption, though. Our test car averaged around 40 miles per gallon. In such a high performance car, that’s very good. This is made more impressive when you factor in the large amount of town and country driving I did, where economy will always suffer. More economical engines are available for the XF and XF Sportbrake though, if you want your fuel to go even further.

When cornering, the body is controlled, composed and poised. Not even the terrible road surfaces I subjected the Jaguar to unsettled it. Impressively, you can take most roundabouts with almost zero body roll, while retaining a supple, relaxing ride quality. During motorway driving, the sure footed nature of the car’s set up means it is remarkably easy to keep in your lane without having to constantly make adjustments to the steering.
Refinement
Quality
The engine whispers when you’re making gentle progress, and under hard acceleration, the engine note is nothing more than a muted growl.
The overall impression this car gives is one of high quality. Everything you touch feels like it will stand the test of time, which is a very important advantage in this price bracket. The interior had no obvious weak points - another plus if you’re planning on using one as family transport.
A combination of a great ride and a well constructed interior means that if the Sportbrake does find a bump, there’s no annoying squeaks or nasty rattles to spoil things. The car is at its most serene though, on the motorway; with the windows and sunroof shut, it’s near silent.
Practicality The XF in saloon form is hardly a car which anyone could accuse of being difficult to live with. The Sporkbrake though, gives the XF even greater practicality. The load area is big enough for a pram or a dog, and the rear seats fold flat with surprising ease to give improved load carrying capacity. The centre consul has two deep storage bins, with one doubling up as a cup holder. All the doors have sensible sized pockets. The driver’s one was filled with my sunglasses, mobile phone, water bottle and compact camera with room to spare. This may sound trivial, but it makes life a lot easier when you can put everything in once place when you’re on the move. The door mirrors give great visibility, and this car came equipped with a reversing camera and parking sensors on both the front and rear (rear parking cameras are standard across the Sportbrake range). Overall, the car was no more difficult to drive and live with than a hatchback.
Conclusion This is a Jaguar you can buy with your head as well as your heart. Convincing fuel consumption, performance and handsome looks make this an easy car to like - everyone who I showed the Sportbrake to were excited by it. There’s very few cars in this class currently on sale which are so evocative. And don’t be saddened if it’s out of your price range - I’m sure that H.A Fox will happily sell you a used one.

Ways to minimise inheritance tax Families hoping to pass their wealth down the generations should not be put off by HM Revenue & Customs’ attack on schemes that purport to reduce inheritance tax. The crackdown by HM Revenue & Customs is aimed at those schemes and the providers which use complicated legal arrangements and ‘aggressive’ tax avoidance schemes. It hopes to raise an extra £2billion of tax a year. The majority of families who are trying to preserve savings and property for their children and grandchildren are not being targeted. However, taxpayers should still be aware that there is a real prospect that some of their estate may be subject to Inheritance tax. In 2011-2012 around 3% of estates paid Inheritance tax. As tax allowances have been frozen and property prices rise it is estimated that 10% of all estates will pay some Inheritance tax at 40% in the next five years. Marriage Any wealth above £325,000 – known as the nil rate band – left by an individual to relatives or friends on death triggers a tax bill set at 40 per cent. However, husbands and wives and civil partners (but not unmarried couples) can pass wealth between themselves tax-free while they are alive and they can also inherit each other’s nil rate band on death. This increases the allowance to £650,000 after the surviving spouse dies. There are also a number of simple steps that taxpayers should be taking to reduce the risk of being subject to Inheritance tax. Annual Gift Allowance Money can be given away to one or more people as long as the total sum amounts to no more than £3,000 a year. The unused part of this allowance can be carried over to the following year for one year only. Multiple Gifts
Gifting up to £250 to an unlimited number of people in one year will not be caught by Inheritance tax. Wedding Presents Parents can each give cash or gifts worth £5,000 to the bride and groom, while grandparents can each hand over £2,500 and anyone else can give up to £1,000. These gifts must be made on or shortly before the wedding. Regular Gifts Out of Normal Income Regular gifts out of normal income will fall outside the taxpayer’s estate providing that the gifts were made regularly and the donors standard of living did not suffer as a result. It is a little used exemption, but if set up correctly can save a considerable amount of Inheritance tax. Plan Ahead Any gift of any size will not be considered for inheritance tax if the donor survives for another seven years. This is known as a potentially exempt transfer. However, the gift may crystallise a Capital gains tax liability Take Out a Simple Trust A Financial Adviser website has predicted that over £500million worth of unnecessary Inheritance Tax will be paid to the Government in 2014 – 10% more than in 2013. This figure is attributed to the number of life insurance policies that are not placed into a trust. A trust removes the policy proceeds from the policyholder’s estate so that on death it is paid direct to the beneficiaries. It will not pass through probate and the proceeds will be free of inheritance tax up to the nil rate band allowance. Trust law is complicated. The ‘Big Breakfast Launch’ by Archie Luckett Archie’s savoury and scrumptious menu of a full English breakfast is in the guise of a big square burger. Archie is a pupil at Abberley Parochial V.C. Primary School in Worcestershire. ‘Space Menu’ by Joseph Drennan Joseph invented a cosmic menu of tomato and rocket soup, best of British beef stew with asteroid dumplings and a chocolate mousse with space dust. Joseph is a pupil at Wray Common Primary School in Reigate. The winning menu ideas were selected yesterday by Tim and award winning chef Heston Blumenthal. They were looking for fun and balanced menus that excited Tim, had an element of Britishness, and the potential to be transformed into a space dinner that could be flown to the ISS. The

Children were asked to design a British-inspired meal for Tim to eat in space, taking account of good nutritional principles as well as the constraints of space (such as handling, packaging and preservation). Is this double-lobed structure built from two separate comets that came together in the Solar System’s history, or is it one comet that has eroded dramatically and asymmetrically over time? Rosetta, by design, is in the best place to study one of these unique objects. As the Rosetta spacecraft makes history as the first to orbit a comet as it swings around the Sun, our UK Rosetta scientists and engineers will be ‘on-board’ for the trip of a lifetime, ready to unlock the secrets of this time capsule from the dawn of our Solar System. Comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko and Rosetta now lie 405 million kilometres from Earth, about half way between the orbits of Jupiter and Mars, rushing towards the inner Solar System at nearly 55 000 kilometres per hour. The comet is in an elliptical 6.5-year orbit that takes it from beyond Jupiter at its furthest point, to between the orbits of Mars and Earth at its closest to the Sun. Rosetta will accompany it for over a year as they swing around the Sun and back out towards Jupiter again. Comets are considered to be primitive building blocks of the Solar System and may have helped to ‘seed’ Earth with water, perhaps even the ingredients for life. But many fundamental questions about these enigmatic objects remain, and through a comprehensive, in situ study of the comet, Rosetta aims to unlock the secrets within. The comet began to reveal its personality while Rosetta was on its approach. Images taken by the OSIRIS camera between late April and early June showed that its activity was variable whilst the stunning images taken from a distance of about 12 000 km began to reveal that the nucleus comprises two distinct segments joined by a ‘neck’, giving it a duck-like appearance. Subsequent images showed more and more detail – the most recent, highestresolution image was downloaded from the spacecraft earlier today and will be available this afternoon. Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko activity on 2 August 2014. The image was taken by Rosetta’s OSIRIS wide-angle camera from a distance of 550 km. The exposure time of the image was 330 seconds and the comet nucleus is saturated

Today, Rosetta is nearing the comet’s surface, but will edge closer still. At the same time, more of the suite of instruments will provide a detailed scientific study of the comet, scrutinising the surface for a target site for the Philae lander. Eventually, Rosetta will attempt a close, near-circular orbit at 30 km and, depending on the activity of the comet, perhaps come even closer. The primary landing site will be identified in midSeptember. The final timeline for the sequence of events for deploying Philae – currently expected for 11 November – will be confirmed by the middle of October. Among its wide range of scientific measurements, Philae will send back a panorama of its surroundings, as well as very high-resolution pictures of the surface. It will also perform an on-the-spot analysis of the composition of the ices and organic material, including drilling down to 23 cm below the surface and feeding samples to Philae’s onboard laboratory for analysis. The focus of the mission will then move to the ‘escort’ phase, during which Rosetta will stay alongside the comet as it moves closer to the Sun, monitoring the ever-changing conditions on the surface as the comet warms up and its ices sublimate. Speaking about the Philae lander’s UK-led Ptolemy instrument – a laboratory the size of a small shoebox Ian Wright, Professor of Planetary Sciences at The Open University, said: “Once the Philae lander touches down on the comet, we will be looking for evidence recorded in remnants of debris that survived the processes of planet formation. This is not merely a period of pre-history, but one that pre-dates the origin of life itself. Our quest is to gain insights into this transitional era, which took place more than 4.5 billion years ago.”
