Tudor House & Garden This summer is a perfect time to discover one of Southampton’s hidden gems, tucked away in the old town area of Southampton City Centre. As one of the city’s most important historic buildings, the house encompasses over 800 years of history on one site. The museum, with its beautifully recreated Tudor knot garden, is an exciting discovery for all ages and is just a few minutes away from the city centre and the Red Funnel Ferry terminal. Dating back to 1492, the current Grade 1 listed house has been home to such characters as eminent Tudor lawyer Lord Lyster, artist George Rogers and Victorian bonnet maker Eliza Simmons. Tudor house reopened in 2010 after it was lovingly restored in a ten year project to repair and protect the aging fabric of the building. The lottery funded restoration project brought in a mix of new technology and well thought out displays to showcase the story of the house and some of our extensive collection of objects. Most importantly it has ensured the survival of our historic house for future generations to enjoy. Within Tudor House you can enjoy a vivid and exciting audiovisual show which explains the history of the house. Delve deeper into the house’s past through lenticular panels and innovative interactive screens that rotate to show how the rooms would have looked during different historic periods. The story of the house is truly brought to life with representations of the Tudor, Georgian and Victorian eras. The reconstructed Tudor and Victorian kitchens demonstrate what has changed (and stayed very much the same) down the years. A selection of restored artefacts of historic importance are on display in the fascinating museum, including examples of Georgian and Victorian jewellery, as well as a number of archaeological finds dating back to the medieval and Tudor periods. There are also a series of interactive activities giving children the chance to find specific objects around the house, design their own wall fabrics or tiles, make rubbings of unusual textures within the building and dress up in period costume.
After touring the house, you can enjoy a cream tea in the excellent café overlooking the tranquil Tudor knot garden, offering plenty of opportunities for children to explore safely, and a quiet spot to enjoy a sunny day out. Beyond the garden lies King John’s Palace, the remains of a stonebuilt merchant’s house built in the 1200s, which later became part of the medieval town walls. Tudor House & garden is a place to discover the history of the city and meet the colourful characters of its past.
Tudor House often plays host to a range of learning and craft sessions for both adults and children. To find out if one is running on the day of your visit check the Tudor House & Garden website www.tudorhouseandgarden.com or call 023 8083 4536 for opening times and admission charges. 8 | The LOOP

Garden Design on your Doorstep
The unusual, the interesting, the different.
Do you ever long to find that little bit of inspiration that will help make your outdoor space into something special? Creating a garden that serves both as a functional area for entertaining, relaxing or somewhere for the children to play and as a place that is pleasing to the eye is not always as simple as it might first seem. Most of us believe it is ‘something anyone can do’ and in some ways, this is true. Many gardens are quite breathtakingly beautiful and a designer has not set foot inside the garden gate. Mostly, these gardens have evolved over a long time, perhaps even over a couple of decades and are fine for those of us who are happy to potter and experiment at our leisure. The rest of us poor mortals need a helping – or a designer’s hand! – to obtain quickly and effortlessly, a captivating garden.
This is because most of us lead very busy lives and we want someone else to create for us what we don’t have time for ourselves. Furthermore, most of us want a garden with the minimum of maintenance and to achieve the balance between something that is attractive and requires little attention, needs skilful planning.
Today, great garden design needs to depict a lifestyle that reflects stylish 21st century living where the trend for expanding our living areas beyond the four walls of our homes, comes complete with outdoor kitchens, fireplaces, elaborate lighting and all weather garden sofas. Did you know that great garden design truly enhances the exterior of our homes and can add not only value to our properties, it can also greatly increase the chances of a quicker sale? Want to be inspired and see some great innovative design ideas? Then do pop along to Hambrooks of Titchfield, Hampshire’s only Garden Destination Centre where you can wander about 16 show gardens, or sit in the coffee courtyard and chat to one of the resident Garden designers about design, plants or indeed anything to do with gardens!

Stagecoach Fareham and Hedge End We pride ourselves on helping each child develop at their own pace and providing a friendly environment where children can learn, develop and most of all have fun. Over the years our students have performed in many theatres including The Mayflower Theatre in Southampton and Her Majesty’s Theatre in London’s West End.
Stagecoach Fareham and Hedge End has been running for over 12 years and in that time the school has had the privilege to develop some wonderful talents. Each week over 150 students receive an hours training of each of the three disciplines of singing, dancing and drama by teachers, all of whom have a background in performing professionally. Taking classes in singing, dance and drama has been proven to build a child’s self-esteem and confidence, giving them skills they can use to only in performance but in everyday life.
This June, 18 students made the trip to London to perform a song and dance piece from Hairspray and in November another group of 18 will be performing Annie on the same stage. Our ever popular summer workshop will also be featuring songs from Hairspray, for those children aged 6-16, whilst our Early Stages workshop, aimed at 4-6 year olds, will be taking a trip on The Magic Carpet with music from Aladdin and Arabian Nights. Photography Young talented Photographer Introducing the photography Bolih Hengki Lie... of Bolih Hengki Lie from ...to exhibit his work in Indonesia Fareham - featuring his homeland Indonesia. An interesting story of how, through the marvels of modern technology, it became possible to link up this young photographer [living in Indonesia] to be tutored by Mike Herring [a local professional photographer] via Skype.
I first came in contact with Bolih in 2011. Bolih was a keen up and coming photographer thirsting for knowledge. On seeing samples of his work, I was aware that here was a young photographer bursting with talent, but so keen to widen his range of subjects.
The distance in travel plus the restrictions imposed meant that to become his tutor became rather difficult. Through the wonders of the internet and skype, I was able to help with a tutorial programme with Bolih. I dare not think of the time we both gave to this project. There is a sense of achievement when you see how a young man from humble beginnings, and living in a less fortunate country than ours in the availability of creative and technical backup and support, fights the odds to become a brilliant photographer. I proudly introduce you to his photography. What you will find is that he has a technical talent and a creative eye, this combination allows him to photograph people in natural situations, plus capture the beautiful landscapes of his country. But beyond that, Bolih captures people with character naturally, and also people of beauty and grace, which is a rare talent which endured me to his work. Mike Herring LIBPP [R]

“Using modern methods of construction - and with technologies incorporated into the design to seek carbon neutral credentials - Ben Ainslie and his team have sought to commission a team home that brings together the three key functions of boat design and team training; boat building; and a Visitor and Education Centre. HGP Architects design delivers each unique function of the building in a hierarchy of cascading layers linked together through a central light well that connects everyone to the heart of the team and the boat.”

Fareham Arts Festival This summer a new multi venue arts festival is coming to Fareham in Hampshire. From August 8th–16th local people and visitors will be treated to a feast of art, music and performance, literature, workshops, yarnbombing and film at various locations around the borough.
FESTIVAL areham ARTS
Unlike many events of this nature, we are run by a not for profit (Live Art Local CIC www.liveartlocal.co.uk) whose aim is to promote artistic work from the region and to make the arts accessible to all. To this end the vast majority of our events are free to attend, with the rest being low cost. This is so every person who wishes to engage with arts and culture as part of this nine day celebration, can without worrying about the price. As well as art, film, literature, poetry and performance there will be a variety of workshops running over the duration featuring everything from theatre, to art and literature. Some of these will be free to attend; whilst others will be low cost with all materials provided. Details of these will be released soon and you will shortly be able to buy tickets and book your place on our website. As it is the school holidays we want the young people of the borough to engage with this great event in any way they can, so unless stated otherwise, all our events and happenings are suitable for children and young people. Highlights for teenagers include hip hop performances at Café Imbizo’s performance space curated by Music Fusion and a spoken word event hosted by nationally acclaimed spoken word organisation, Apples and Snakes. The crowning glory of the festival is the first Fareham Shorts: International Short Film Competition. Filmmakers from around the world have been invited to submit their short films under 12 minutes in length in four categories: Animation, Non-Narrative/Experimental, Documentary and Fiction. Judged by industry professionals including a Bafta winning, Oscar nominated filmmaker there will be a winner in each category, with one film named Film of the Festival.
SUPPORTED BY:
The winning and shortlisted films will be shown at Ashcroft Arts Centre and film lovers are invited to buy tickets to be part of this gala event and to take part in a question and answer session with some of our filmmakers and meet them. We want you to get involved in your arts festival so if you want to be part of this great event then we would love to hear from you. There are many ways you can help from volunteering to getting involved in yarnbombing (decorating the town with knitting) or participating in workshops. If you would like to volunteer then please email volunteer@farehamartsfestival. co.uk for all other ways to get involved please email enquire@ farehamartsfestival.co.uk and we will warmly welcome you to the Live Art Local family. Those who wish to visit the festival can pick up one of our programs from a variety of locations around the south from late July and visit farehamartsfestival.co.uk to find out more, including to purchase tickets.

Portchester Memorial Gardens
Staying connected to loved ones Losing someone close to you is never easy – but even more so when it is your mum or dad who passes away. For those struggling to deal with grief, it can help to have the physical focus of a place where they feel close to their loved one, which is why many choose to inter their parent’s ashes within Portchester Memorial Gardens. Explains Sarah from Fareham: “My mum passed away three years ago and I still miss her. I visit the Gardens regularly to take flowers, sit at her grave and tell her about what’s going on in my life and what the kids are up to. The gardens are so peaceful and lovely, that I always feel lighter after I visit.” Memorials can be placed in a variety of themed areas cultivated to offer year-round beauty within tranquil grounds – including the Garden of the Sea with its sculptural anchors and wooden jetty, and the Hill of Roses, flooded with summer scent and colour. The sympathetic team at the family-run Memorial Gardens are experienced in helping to create fitting, lasting tributes where ashes can be laid to rest. Give them a call to discuss your requirements.

Pole and aerial talent not just for the girls The art of pole and aerial acrobatics is not reserved just for girls, as 21-year-old Henry Lovejoy-Brinkman has proved. The Portsmouth man has joined the Tiger Tone studio in Leigh Park and is now reaching dazzling heights and gaining in strength and muscle tone each week. He highly recommends the physical sport as a great way to meet people and have fun. Henry commented: “I’m a full time mechanic and my other interests lie with working on cars. When I first saw the advert for Tiger Tone, I thought it looked like great fun. My next thought was, heck why not? “Being a guy at pole can be very hard. A lot of people see it as a girl only sport but guys really do excel at it due to greater strength. “Since joining Tiger Tone I’ve gained a lot of strength and gone down 4 inches on my waist. I can see why girls love it, for the waist-line benefits.
Imagine the benefits of Liposuction without surgery! See our website for latest offers!

Local school’s ‘Wear a Hat Day’ for brain tumour charity There were hats galore at Hook-with-Warsash C of E Academy on their ‘Wear a Hat’ Day for Brain Tumour Research. Every year the school holds a special day in which pupils and teachers are invited to pay a donation to wear a hat to school for the day and all the money collected is donated to the charity Brain Tumour Research. The day was first held in 2012 in memory of Ross Pearman, father of pupil Phoenix Pearman, a Hook-with-Warsash year three student. Ross sadly lost his life to a brain tumour on 19 February 2012. Phoenix was recently interviewed as part of a video documentary for the charity Brain Tumour Research. He said: “Daddy died on 19th February 2012. He was at home. He had a brain tumour and they couldn’t get it out of his head. I feel bad and I wish I had him back.” On the school’s ‘Wear a Hat’ day Phoenix wore a special woolly hat with a picture of his dad on it. He also has a colourful treasure box with memories of his dad in it including a poem that his dad wrote especially for him. Phoenix bravely shared his memories in an assembly, including a Powerpoint presentation that he had made himself, in front of all the other children. The school raised £290 for the charity this year. Headteacher Sara Willoughby said: “The academy is always eager to support charity events but this one is unique due to the close links with Phoenix and his dad. It was lovely to see all his friends and the staff supporting this worthy cause.” If you would like to donate to this charity and support Phoenix’s cause please go to: www.braintumourresearch.org 26 | The LOOP

“Hopefully one day more men will join Tiger Tone. The stereo type of it being only for girls and more commonly for Adult Clubs needs to go. It’s a great sport that will make almost anyone smile, and is super good for you. Natalie Sabiston-Cripps, founder of Tiger Tone, said: “Henry is great and is very popular at class. He’s also a great ambassador for pole performing. Let’s hope it will encourage other men to take up the sport.” The fitness studio in Leigh Park runs classes in many different disciplines including pole fitness, aerial hoop and silks. Visit www.tigertonestudio.co.uk or contact Natalie on 07840 383488. Exercise the fun way.

The Taste of Wickham festival is back for a second helping! Last year saw the first ever Taste of Wickham festival and due to its spectacular success, it is returning this September (Sunday 13th, 10am-4pm), promising to be even bigger and better than before. Blessed with gorgeous weather, Wickham Square was buzzing with over 4000 visitors last year and organisers are planning for the same again. With a total of 58 stall-holders (up 10 from last year) from florists to crafters, butchers to bakers, and live music from local musicians, it will be an exciting showcase of local Wickham talent. Ben Sawyers, Chairman of the organising team said, “After the success of last year’s festival, we have been inundated with applications from many different local producers and businesses, all wanting to participate in this year’s festival. We have done our best to include a wide and interesting variety of stalls while ensuring that this really is a taste of Wickham and not just another market. Not only do we have businesses joining us from in and around the Square, we also have local food stalls and plenty of fun activities for the children, such as the Jungle Buddies Playbus, a bouncy castle and free craft activities put on by Creation Station. It promises to be a really great family day out.” The Southern Co-operative has just been confirmed as the main supporter of the event, enabling the organisers to once again arrange the popular cookery demonstrations. This year, four local chefs will be incorporating ingredients from The Southern Co-operative’s Local Flavours range into their tasty recipes, showing visitors how to make the most of locally produced food. Learning lessons from last year, there will be two Park and Ride shuttle buses operating between Westlands Farm and the Square to get people back and forth as quickly as possible. Further details regarding the programme of events, stall holders and so on will gradually be added to the website www.tasteofwickham.co.uk. 28 | The LOOP

Rocket Science: turning UK children into space biologists The UK Space Agency and RHS boldly go where none have gone before, turning half a million UK children into space biologists.
• up to 10,000 UK schools to take part in nationwide horticultural ‘citizen science’ experiment Register your interest through the RHS Campaign for School Gardening website.
We have partnered with RHS, the UK’s leading gardening charity to unveil ‘Rocket Science’. This educational programme, revealed this week at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, will: • send rocket salad seeds into space as part of British ESA astronaut Tim Peake’s historic mission to the International Space Station
The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Campaign for School Gardening has partnered with the UK Space Agency to embark on an innovative educational project, launched at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show (19 – 23 May 2015). The project, Rocket Science, will give around half a million children the chance to learn how investment in human space exploration contributes to our knowledge of life on Earth, using the invaluable expertise of the European Space Agency (ESA) and RHS Science team. Rocket Science will involve 2kg of an as-yet un-named cultivar of rocket seeds (Eruca sativa, a popular salad variety) sent to the International Space Station as part of British ESA astronaut Tim Peake’s six-month Principia mission. After several months on board, orbiting the planet at 17,000mph, the seeds will be returned to Earth and sent to thousands of UK schools, alongside a batch of seeds of the same cultivar that have stayed on Earth. Over the following months pupils will grow and compare the seeds as they embark on a voyage of discovery to see whether we can sustain human life in space through the production of our own food. The results of the nationwide citizen science experiment will then be analysed to discover whether space travel has impacted on the growth of the seeds. British ESA astronaut Tim Peake said:
As New Horizons approaches its flyby of Pluto on July 14, it will deliver color images that eventually show surface features as small as a few miles across. What Pluto Might Look Like. Illustration by NASA/Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory/ Southwest Research Institute.

It’s a huge privilege to be the first British ESA astronaut flying to the International Space Station. During my sixmonth tour, I’ll be conducting a number of experiments on the International Space Station. I hope that Rocket Science will inspire the next generation to think scientifically, and to consider the fulfilling careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths).

Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh Credit: RHS/Hannah McKay
Minister for Universities and Science Jo Johnson said:
Rocket Science is a really exciting project for us, and a unique chance to get even more schools engaging with horticulture and science. Working with a partner like the UK Space Agency brings a fresh and exciting perspective on horticulture in the National Curriculum. We look forward to discovering the results of the nationwide experiment.
Britain’s space industry is going from strength to strength, and for this to continue it’s right we inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers. ‘Rocket Science’ is doing just that by giving thousands of schoolchildren the opportunity to play a part in Tim’s mission to the International Space Station, while learning new skills in a fun and unique way. To introduce the project, an inspiring exhibition was on show in the Discovery Zone at this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show, complete with a real-life Mars Rover and a team of ESA’s leading scientists on hand to talk about their work in this field. Set across four zones, interactive displays will take the visitor through the past, present and future of plants in space, discovering the important role scientists play in helping plants to thrive in inhospitable conditions, how space exploration helps solve problems on Earth and even the plants astronauts need to survive long-term missions. Claire Custance, RHS Skills Development Manager – Education & Learning, said:
Further details of the project will be made available following its launch at RHS Chelsea Flower Show. Schools will be able to apply for seeds from September 2015 via the RHS Campaign for School Gardening website. Along with the seeds, schools and other educational organisations will be able to use a comprehensive suite of teaching and learning resources that are being developed by the RHS Campaign for School Gardening and Science and Plants for schools. Resources for both primary and secondary schools will be available, and will include suggestions on scientific investigations and experiments inspired by the project and even details on how to design and build a table top Mars greenhouse. PJ Drew (Engravers) Ltd Signs and Graphics celebrate 50 years In April this year P.J. Drew (Engravers) Ltd celebrated 50 years in Business. We had a series of open days to mark the occasion, and to thank friends, family and customers for their support over the years. One of our many visitors was the Mayor of Southampton, Cllr Sue Blatchford, who presented Peter and Mary Drew with a rose to commemorate their achievement. From humble beginnings in 1965 as one man with an engraving machine, P.J. Drew (Engravers) Ltd now have the capabilities to produce many different types of engraved items and signage, from one off labels and control panels to bespoke office fascias, shop fronts, boat nameplates and vinyl graphics. Over the past 50 years we have constantly adapted to changing trends and technologies, and we have recently started to manufacture illuminated lightboxes, letters and numbers for premises, boats or even wedding centre pieces! We also produce items such as temporary directional signage and table plans to suit your wedding theme. This month we have been exhibiting at the Seaworks Exhibition in Southampton, to showcase some of the many items we are able to manufacture for the marine industry.

Cricket Live Returning for it’s fourth year, the home of Hampshire Cricket welcomes The Ageas Family Festival on 1st August. Alongside fantastic family entertainment, the Festival will feature the Royal London One-Day Cup – Hampshire v Middlesex, with a headline musical performance from Boyzone, one of the UKs best-loved boybands. Known for hits including ‘Love Me For A Reason’, ‘Words’, ‘No Matter What’ and ‘When The Going Gets Tough’, Boyzone are currently celebrating two decades in the music industry. Within these 20 years, the band have tallied up an impressive 5 Brit Awards, eighteen top 10 hits on the UK Singles Chart, six No. 1 UK hit singles and five No. 1 albums, with 25 million records sold by 2013 worldwide. They released their sixth studio album ‘From Dublin to Detroit’ last year, featuring their favourite songs from the Motown era, including renditions of “You Can’t Hurry Love”, “What Becomes of the Brokenhearted” plus many more. Boyzone said: “After the heroics of the Irish team in the Cricket World Cup, we’re glad to be bringing a bit of the Irish craic to the Ageas Bowl on August 1st. It will be the last gig of the Summer for Boyzone so we’re all looking forward to a great night.” Prior to the headlining performance by Boyzone, the cricketing action will see Hampshire face Middlesex in a Royal London One-Day Cup match. The Royal London One-Day Cup, a 50-over competition, offers a midpoint between County Championship cricket and the NatWest T20 Blast. As such, it benefits from the best of both of the aforementioned formats, the tactics and intricacies of County Championship and some of the fireworks associated with Twenty20 cricket. Fun for all ages, this unique event sees the return of The Ageas Family Festival, which will provide the backdrop to both the cricketing and musical entertainment. The popular festival promises to be bigger and better than ever before. A whole host of family-friendly activities will be installed onsite and available for use throughout the day. Plus, alongside the exciting cricketing action, the Ageas Bowl will welcome the arrival of the Red Devils (British Army) who will parachute into the ground during the innings interval! Free activities for children will range from bouncy castles to climbing walls, laser quest to a fun fair, with Cricket Coaching also returning alongside an arts and crafts area for all.
The Ageas Bowl Commercial Director, Stuart Robertson said: “We pride ourselves on innovation here at the Ageas Bowl and we are delighted to be partnering with Music plus Sport to again deliver a ground-breaking event for all the family. There can’t be many more family days out with so much included and we can’t wait to welcome everyone on 1st August.” Director of Communications and Public Affairs at Ageas, Paul Lynes said: “We are very proud of our partnership with The Ageas Bowl, and delighted to be supporting The Ageas Family Festival for the fourth year. It’s all about delivering new experiences at a venue that has much to offer, especially given the new ‘Hilton at The Ageas Bowl’ will be open for this year’s season. This event provides the opportunity for those that don’t usually attend the cricket to experience what the sport has to offer, but also, something new for the avid fan, with the introduction of Cricket Live. We are really excited about this event and look forward to continuing to work in partnership with The Ageas Bowl over the years to come.” Tickets will be on general sale at via www.ageasbowl.com. Tickets are priced at £40 adults /£10 child (under 18) however a limited number of early bird adult tickets will be available at £30 and £35. There will be hospitality packages available to suit all budgets. The match starts at 10:30, with a scheduled finish of around 18:30.

Solicitors Step Up for Charity Support After unprecedented success in fundraising during its Golden Anniversary in 2014, Eric Robinson Solicitors kicked off this year’s programme of charity events when staff took part in a Step-a-thon for the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance. In 2014, Hampshire law firm Eric Robinson Solicitors raised over £6,000 for Wessex Heartbeat’s ‘HIGH 5 Appeal’, making its online donation page at ‘Justgiving.com’ in the top 3% for the site that year. Now the legal firm is looking to do the same this year for Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance. The first event saw staff spend the afternoon in the gymnasium of Upper Shirley High School in their first ever Step-a-thon. ‘Members of the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance actually climbed Kilimanjaro earlier this year,’ explained Emma Henley, Marketing Executive for Eric Robinson Solicitors. ‘We wanted to raise money while showing our support for them by doing the same number of steps, albeit in much easier surroundings.’
EST
‘The charity was nominated and voted for by our staff when we asked them what they would like to support this year,’ says Catherine Maxfield, Managing Partner of Eric Robinson Solicitors which has 140 staff at six offices across the Southampton, Winchester and the New Forest. ‘We are so proud of what we achieved last year and our hope is to match, if not exceed that success for another important local charity.’

Number 12 Bistro - Following the Dream Number 12 Bistro is bringing you a touch of the Mediterranean with its new offering of Turkish/Greek mezes. Under new management from January this year, Number 12 Bistro has undergone many exciting changes, the main addition being the opening of a new and vibrant bar area, offering an extensive range of spirits, wines, beers and freshly made cocktails. The launch of a new evening menu, which offers a delicious selection of Greek/ Turkish mezes and cheese platters, makes Number 12 a great choice for any occasion. During the day the Bistro offers breakfast, a variety of baguettes and Paninis and mouth-watering gourmet burgers, alongside daily specials and a selection of homemade, freshly baked cakes. Located on the edge of the Hamble River, and with a sun filled decking area, this is a perfect location to enjoy some delicious food and drink while soaking up some rays and taking in the gorgeous views. The Bistro is owned and managed by Engin Sevincli and Sonia Fisher, a young couple who gave up their careers and lives in Torbay to follow the dream. Engin has been a cocktail bartender for over 13 years and has always been looking for the right opportunity to run his own business whilst continuing to do what he loves. Sonia’s passion lies with cooking and baking, making them the perfect team, all they needed then was the perfect premises! After a time of not finding anything they loved closer to home, Sonia decided to follow her heart and not her head, and step away from her career as a chartered accountant so that together they could pursue the dream of owning their own business. Number 12 Bistro was a chance find for the couple as they did not know the area. They stayed in a nearby hotel on the way to stay with a friend during their tour of the South coast in a quest to find a suitable location for their business. Falling in love with the Hamble River and Swanwick they never thought that just two weeks later Number 12 Bistro would go on the market – this definitely was one of those ‘it was meant to be’ moments.

Does your PC seem slow? Maybe even noisy? Well these could be a couple of many signs that suggest the hard drive could be at the end of its life. If you’re running Windows 7 or higher we recommend changing the hard drive for a solid state drive (SSD). This is a drive that uses flash memory as a means of storing and accessing data, much like computer RAM but still behaves in the same way a Hard Drive does. Unlike other storage devices such as the original hard drive in your PC, an SSD has no moving parts, which gives it advantages such as; accessing stored information MUCH faster, produces no noise, often much more reliable, and consumes much less power than the traditional hard drive (HDD) found in computers. This upgrade will significantly increase the speed of your PC even from when it was new.
Paint Your Own Pottery Individual Or Group Bookings Baby Hand & Foot Prints Birthday Parties Team Building Parties Ladies Evenings Hen Parties Gift Vouchers Open 7 Days a Week Til Late Call to Book Your Table
Assuming your PC is still working we can clone the original drive onto the SSD so the computer will be exactly as it is now, just much faster (can deliver speeds of up to 100 times faster than a hard drive) and more reliable. If you would like more information on SSD drives or would like to upgrade your PC please call us and we arrange this for you. Windows 10 will be here sooner than first expected. Microsoft have said it will be available on July 29th as a free upgrade for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 users. If you are running any of these two operating systems and haven’t already noticed, take a look in the bottom right and you should see a windows symbol, click on this to ‘reserve your free upgrade’. However not all is good, Microsoft have announced that you will say goodbye to Windows 7 gadgets, Windows media center and Hearts (card game). Also Windows 10 won’t be able to play DVD’s and so will require a separate software package, like VLC Player. Don’t forget that you can always contact us for free impartial advice. Growing church in need of expansion A church in Sarisbury Green is attracting so many new worshippers each week that it needs to build an extension to keep up with demand. St. Paul’s church in Barnes Lane, Sarisbury Green is welcoming many young families to the congregation and must create new meeting rooms, toilets and a kitchen in order to cater for its new attendees. Having so many parents and young children in the building has highlighted the need for extra rooms and toilets. At the moment, there is only one toilet, which also doubles as the disabled facility and the baby-changing room, meaning queues can get quite long. The church, which was originally built in the early nineteenth century, wants to create an extension to the south of the existing building, which will provide two small meeting rooms, three extra toilets, an office, a kitchen and some storage space. The £200,000 project will also include revamping the existing vestry to create additional kitchen and storage facilities. The extension will involve building on part of the churchyard, in a space that includes some older graves. All of these graves are more than 100 years old, and none will be disturbed – the idea is to float the extension on top of the ground so that no digging below ground is necessary. The vicar of St. Paul’s, the Rev Sandy Matheson, said: “The fact that the church is growing is obviously good news. We love having the church full of children and young families, and our commitment to them is shown by the fact that we are employing a new children and families’ worker, Debbie Boyt. “But of course, that has highlighted our need for better kitchen and toilet facilities, as well as some other rooms. There is no church hall, so everything we do happens in the church itself. This extension will give us the flexibility we need.”

Taxation of property and rental income As many people find it difficult to raise a mortgage they are forced to rent somewhere to live. This increase in potential tenants has been matched by people who have turned to the property market in an effort to improve on the low returns on their bank accounts.
TAX
Looking for help and support?
In the excitement and stress of acquiring property and finding tenants it is easy to overlook the fact that if you receive income from land and property in the UK you need to tell HMRC. The only exception is income of less than £4,250 from a lodger in your own home. You have until 5 October following the end of the tax year (5 April) in which you first received the income, to tell HMRC. For example, if you rent out a property you own on 1 March 2015, you need to tell HMRC by 5 October 2015. If you do not do this, you may be charged a penalty. It is best to tell HMRC as soon as possible after you start, as this will give you more time to consider record keeping, saving up for any tax bill, and how you are going to submit your tax return. You should inform HMRC of your property income no matter whether you are making a profit or a loss from the property. HMRC may ask you to complete a tax return, but if the rental profit is low and you are an employee, you may be able to pay tax through PAYE instead. HMRC let property campaign HMRC is running a ‘campaign’ about let property which provides an opportunity to disclose taxable income to HMRC on better terms than those available under an HMRC enquiry. You may be unaware that the income you have from property is taxable and the following are situations where this may arise,• Changes in relationships – if you move in with someone and rent out the home you previously lived in. • Homes occupied by relatives –a house owned by you and lived in by your son or daughter who contributes to its upkeep. Money you received from this property may be taxable. Remember that for married couples or civil partners, there are special rules for jointly held property, which mean that income is usually deemed to be split 50:50 – you cannot simply allocate the income to the partner with the lowest rate of tax. • Inherited property – income you receive from a property you have inherited is taxable

If HMRC finds you before you have voluntarily made a disclosure you are likely to face higher penalties. You may need to take professional advice first to ensure that you fully understand the position and make an accurate and full disclosure. Making a disclosure is a two stage process. Initially you will need to notify HMRC – and then follow this up with a full disclosure and payment within three months of HMRC’s acknowledgement of your notification. For help with this and other tax matters contact Moore McCusker Tax Associates on 01489 247047.
• Property abroad – if you are resident in the UK you are taxable on your worldwide income. This means that if you let out your home abroad while you moved to the UK to find work, income from your home abroad may be taxable in the UK • Renting a house while you work away from home – you may have been unable to sell your home when taking a job in a different part of the UK. As a result, you may have decided to rent a house close to your new job, and rent out your home. Even if the rent you receive is matched by the rent you pay, you still have taxable rental income • Mistakes about the ‘rent-a-room’ scheme – the renta-room scheme exempts from tax the first £4,250 of income from letting a room in your home to a lodger. If income from lodgers in your home is more than£4,250 in total, (about £83 a week), you are likely to have a tax liability. In addition, rent-a-room does not cover renting the whole of your house.

Education Wyvern College It’s been another busy year at Wyvern, as you will see from the Latest News section on the College’s website. Various trips continue to enrich learning beyond the classroom and provide opportunities for students to experience other countries. Year 7 students were able to use their language skills during trips to France or Germany, Year 9 History students had a poignant visit to WW1 Battlefields, and Year 9 and 10 Philosophy and Ethics students took part in a memorable trip to Berlin and Poland. Wyvern sport continues to flourish, with several Track & Field athletes being selected for the County. In addition, the annual Wyvern 10K Race maintains its popularity and entries are increasing year on year. Fareham College showcases students’ achievement at annual award show Fareham College rewarded students for a range of successes at its annual Awards Ceremony last month. The event took place at Fareham’s Ferneham Hall and recognised the achievements of students throughout the 2014-15 academic year, with categories including Academic Excellence, Outstanding Achievement, Exceptional Personal Endeavour and Contribution to the Reputation of the College, as well as an array of dedicated qualification and subject-specific awards. The Mayor of Fareham, Councillor Michael Ford presented the awards to the winning students, and commended the personal and academic dedication, commitment and efforts of each nominee and winning individual. A range of apprenticeship awards were also presented at the event, recognising the huge recent success of this form of training. Some of the evening’s awards were also sponsored by local employers who work closely with the College to offer apprenticeships, including BAE Systems and Randstad. Damien Vanderhaegen received the Trainee of the Year award. He said: “I have gained a lot of experience during my Traineeship and I would say it is one of the best things I have ever done. I am really grateful for the opportunities the College has given me.” Peter Marsh, Deputy Principal and host for the evening said: “Our Annual Awards event is a fantastic celebration of everything we do. It was a joy to hear the support from the audience and delight from parents and friends as students were recognised for their hard work and contribution to the College.”
The pinnacle of the evening was the announcement of Student of the Year, which was awarded to Level 3 Uniformed Services student Stewart Schomberg. Stewart, formerly of Crofton School, said: “The experience I have had at Fareham has been great and I have really enjoyed my time here. I am hoping to join the Royal Navy after college and feel fully prepared to pursue my career.” Fareham College Principal, Nigel Duncan, praised the hard work and exceptional performance of all students who had been nominated for prizes this year, commenting: “It is always a huge challenge deciding which students should be awarded with one of the 29 awards that the College makes, but for those who win, it is a massive tribute to them as individual learners, their tutors and family who have supported them.”

Thousands of spectators enjoy the spectacular HMS Sultan Summer Show HMS Sultan opened its gates to over 25,000 visitors over the Father’s Day weekend, for a fantastic programme of entertainment and activities at the HMS Sultan Summer Show. The visitors were able to enjoy a wide and varied programme of acts, which included stunts from motor cycle display teams Bolddog Lings (Saturday) and the White Helmets (Sunday) alongside the next generation of riders from local group The Gosport Tigers. Also appearing in the main arena, were The Devil’s Horsemen Stunt Team who performed breath-taking Cossack and chariot racing and the main arena also hosted Field Gun Displays, a steam fayre and the Establishment’s own HMS Sultan Volunteer Band.
A Circus performed within its own Big top along with an unarmed combat displays from a team of Royal Marine Commandos and in a late addition to the scheduled programme for Father’s Day itself, the Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team the Red Arrows give a special flypast.
Amongst those enjoying the Summer Show was Mrs Pauline Blubb, from Southampton who had come along with several generations of her family. Pauline said: “There are 18 of us here today all having a good time.”
The HMS Sultan Summer Show aims to raise valuable funds for local and Service charities while providing an exceptional day out for the local community.
“As children, our parents used to bring us down to enjoy the Show, and now we are parents we bring our own. We really like the Show as there’s always a lot to do and it’s excellent value for money and our children always really love being here.” The HMS Sultan Summer Show is the largest community event held by the Establishment throughout the year. The Show is preceded by a Charity Reception on the Thursday and a Children’s Party for disabled and disadvantaged children on the Friday. Captain Trevor Gulley the Commanding Officer of the Establishment said: “HMS Sultan continues to play an active part in the wider community and we are very keen for our local community to feel part of everything we do here.” “I am grateful to everyone who has come along to support us in our efforts, especially the Red Arrows who have added something extra to what was already an exceptional Show programme. “I am immensely proud of all of my personnel, both Service and civilian, who have made all of the events of the past 4 days run so smoothly. I know so many of those who attended the events will already be looking forward to next year.”

Gardening Hedge your bets! As summer is finally here (whoop whoop )we all want to enjoy our garden. Thoughts come to maintaining that perfect look, With keeping plants in flower and shrubs tidy and grass nice and green. Grass will need cutting once a week and a feed applied and watered if need be. Deadhead annuals and hanging baskets to keep them flowering and looking nice, water in early evening and morning so as the water will not blister the leaves in the sun. Apply a liquid feed at about every 10 days. Many gardeners assume that all pruning has to be done in the dormant season. Certainly if you want to create vigorous bursts of new growth then winter pruning is the answer. However summer pruning is most often done to slow growth, and is best carried out when early summers growth is complete. This reduces the amount of leaf growth which in turn reduces the amount of food the plant produces hopefully slowing the plant down. Prunus trees (cherry) are best pruned in July and August to reduce the chance of silver leaf. Also to avoid the spread of disease as disease sreading spores are most active from September to early spring.
Thinning out the canopy of small trees to allow light into smaller plants and flowers is best done in the summer as you can see exactly how much leaf you are taking out, if done in the winter it would encourage it to become even more vigorous next year. As flowers fade on late spring and early summer deciduous shrubs ensure lots of flowers for next year by pruning out congested and unproductive stems. Using loppers or secateurs start by cutting back stems that have finished flowering. Remove any deadwood, reshape stems that have become old and leggy. Always use sharp pruning tools with care. Maintenance of hedges can be done to keep everything looking tidy in summer months. Once a year for most hedges should be sufficient ,privet is a vigorous growing hedge and can be trimmed up 3-4 times a year. Take care not to cut conifer hedges back to hard in extreme sunshine as the heat and the cutting puts the hedge under stress and can take a long time to recover. A good hedge trimmer will make light work of hedge cutting making sure the blades are kept sharp so as to cut rather than tear the growth. Always remove the clippings from the top of the hedge as decaying clipping as cause disease. If you have large or unwillderly hedges or just don’t feel safe climbing up a ladder with a hedge-cutter do not hesitate to call a professional in they have all the right equipment and it may not cost as much as you think! Lastly sit back and enjoy all of your hard work and relax.

In June and July 1415, Henry V mustered the English army in Hampshire as a prelude to sailing from Portchester and Southampton to invade France in August of that year – an expedition that would end with the famous English victory at the Battle of Agincourt in October 1415. The Bishop’s Waltham Town Team, in collaboration with Bishop’s Waltham Festival, have been planning the event and asking local businesses to get involved through advertising and sponsorship to help fund the celebrations. Hampshire Financial Planning director Nick Clegg, has offices in Winchester Road, Bishop’s Waltham and his clients come to him through personal recommendations. He commented: “I decided to sponsor the banquet as I was so impressed by the Town Team and other community organisations all pulling together and getting involved to organise this event. “It feels great to give something back to the local community in which many of my clients live, and it links with the nature of my job, helping my clients’ families and their children by planning for their future. “I am looking forward to joining in throughout the four day event. With all the activities being planned it’s going to be an amazing weekend.” Tony Kippenberger, Chairman of Bishop’s Waltham Town Team, added: “We have made strenuous efforts to involve other community organisations and they have responded brilliantly. “Our plans are really coming together now and with only a few weeks to go the countdown has really begun. I would like to thank each of our sponsors for their generosity.
“It’s a real achievement to have so many people supporting the event and getting involved in any way they can. Great community spirit.” If you would like to know more about Agincourt History or how to get tickets/programmes for this event visit www.lovebishopswaltham.com/agincourt/history-of-agincourt For tickets, please contact Joan Ferrer on 01489 892430 or email: Jcferrer@talk21.com

How Clean is Your Tile? Natural Stone, Porcelain and Ceramic tiles are beautiful to look at and are worth every penny of your investment! but what happens when they get dirty? Do they lose a little of their ‘wow factor’? Are you tired of getting down on your hands and knees to scrub grout lines or have you just given up? Well, fear not for the Hampshire Tile Doctor is here to help. They offer free advice and free quotations on how to clean and restore any sort of natural stone, be it Marble, Travertine, Limestone, Terracotta, Slate, Victorian tiles, etc. Imagine your natural limestone entrance hall floor tiles, your terracotta or slate kitchen floor tiles, or your ceramic bathroom wall tiles, even your granite worktops and splash-backs being made to look as if they were freshly laid.

Also, have you ever noticed the difference in shade of colour of the grout at the very edge of the room, which should be almost as new and the grout in the middle of the floor? It can be surprising how, even with regular mopping, the grout always looks dirty. Why? Because the grout channel attracts dirt which mopping often glides over. So why not let The Tile Doctor clean the grout so it looks new again? The old days of mops and toothbrushes are gone forever! And what if the grout is also badly stained? No problem, they can even re-co|our the grout for you from a range of subtle colours. After the cleaning process they apply a professional coating of an impregnating sealer, which sinks into the tile and/or grout and gives an invisible protective barrier that will leave your floors so much easier to clean. Sadly, some tile fitters never seal the tiles or grout they lay, which means you could damage your floor by spilling some everyday products you have in your kitchen or bathroom.
We do all the jobs tilers hate including
• Slate & Stone Re-sealing • Grout Cleaning & Sealing • Grout Colouring • Terra Cotta & Quarry Tile Re-sealing • Granite & Marble Re-sealing • Porcelain Clean and Seal • Bath and Shower Re-seals

Registration open for this year’s Ruby Ride Registration is now open for the Rowan Hospice’s fourth Ruby Ride, which will take place around Portsmouth, Purbrook and Petersfield on Sunday 20 September. With a choice of three great routes of 18, 30 or 65 miles, the event appeals to leisure cyclists as well as the more competitive cyclist. Participants are encouraged to raise sponsorship as all monies raised go towards providing hospice care in Portsmouth and South East Hampshire. The Ruby Ride has raised £160,000 over the last three years. Helping to launch The Ruby Ride are event partners Bicycle Recycling, Dirt2Road and SERV Bikers, with cakes and refreshments provided courtesy of the Co-op in Denmead. Karen Kay, Events Fundraiser at The Rowans Hospice, said: “The Ruby Ride is now an established event for cyclists of all abilities with those completing the 18-mile ‘Leisure’ route coming back the next year to try the 30-mile ‘Challenge’ route, and the 30-milers going for the 65-mile ‘Epic’ route. “We are encouraging everyone, even if you haven’t been on a bicycle for years, to come and take part. “All three routes start and finish at Lakeside, North Harbour. It’s not a race and there are refreshment stops en-route for all cyclists which makes it a very enjoyable event. “Everyone taking part receives a T-shirt to wear on the day and medal when they cross the finishing line. We ask all participants to try and raise £100 in sponsorship but every £1 matters and will make a difference.”

Martin Richardson has taken part in previous Ruby Ride events and is encouraging others to sign-up this year to help raise money for The Rowans Hospice who provided care and support for his late wife, Sue. Martin said: “On 30th September 2012, my wife Sue, my daughters Molly-Mae and Alice completed The Ruby Ride, as part of Sue’s birthday. Just a few weeks later she was diagnosed with a late stage cancer of both the bowel and the liver. “Right to the end she fought hard to stay at home to enable her to spend time with all her family, but was eventually admitted to the Hospice and died peacefully the following day. “The Hospice at Home team, the Hospice themselves and the Macmillan Nurses who are based at the Hospice, were instrumental in pulling out all the stops in keeping Sue at home for as long as possible, without their input and assistance this wouldn’t have happened. “So whilst her death was still very fresh in our minds, we were determined to try and complete The Ruby Ride once again in 2013, although this time with a much bigger team of Richardsons. “In 2014 Molly, Alice and I completed The Ruby Ride for the third time in Sue’s memory and to thank the Hospice for all the support they have provided since her death, through the Rowan’s Meerkat Service.” Online registration is available at: www.rowanshospice.co.uk Registration forms will also be available from all of The Rowans Hospice charity shops. New for NWF 2015 will be a designated area for family camping, offering a quieter location for the kids, away from the hardened party animals who are naturally also catered for! There will be new camping guidelines for visiting guests, all of which is available on the website. This year there will be a Howard Plumb Memorial Race, being held on the Saturday, which will commemorate an incredible life, fantastic windsurfing talent and the achievements of a very loved individual. Further information is available from the website www.nationalwatersportsfestival.com/all-events/hayling-island/ windsurfing/howard-plumb/ Allan concludes: “The NWF is a community event that is only possible thanks to the trade element and our ever faithful supporters.” “With the usual price of camping on Hayling seafront costing £20 alone, without any elements of a festival thrown in, we’re confident we’re continuing to provide value for money and look forward to delivering another iconic NWF. Bring it on!”

It only seems like yesterday that global yachtsman Mike Golding and artist Pippa Blake were launching The Green Blue – the joint environment project of the British Marine Federation (BMF) and the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) – but time has flown and in 2015 it’s amazing to think that the project is now celebrating its tenth anniversary. The Green Blue raises awareness through practical projects and activities and identifies environmentally friendly products to make boating in the UK as sustainable as possible. The small Hamblebased team also offers help, guidance and even money saving tips for anyone who wishes to help keep our coasts and inland waters the pleasant places that we so enjoy. Of course, general attitudes and awareness of all things environmental have increased over the past decade, so to some extent The Green Blue has been able to capitalise on new generations of boaters who have grown up with a more willing understanding and acceptance of how important simple changes are, from turning off taps and switching appliances off standby to recycling and upcycling.
Boating behaviours have changed too. Tossing an apple core or cigarette butt overboard is no longer acceptable, and the vast majority of marinas and clubs now recycle waste instead of sending it to landfill. Keeping an eye out for invasive species on hulls and anchors is very much on the radar too. Jane Swan, The Green Blue Project Manager explains: “Highly invasive non-native species can affect whole ecosystems by filtering out large quantities of nutrients. Eradication of most invasive species once established is very difficult, so the best approach to deal with the arrival of new species is to focus on better biosecurity, especially the ‘Check, Clean, Dry’ routine for both inland and coastal boating activities.” A number of organisations in the sector have also championed sustainable boating and promoted The Green Blue’s best practice. Many boaters may not realise when they see The Yacht Harbour Association’s Gold Anchor flags flying at a marina, it means that key environmental standards have been achieved.
Looking back, it’s amazing to think that today’s ever-present technology (the iPhone and Kindle to name just two) did not even exist ten years ago! In 2005, George W Bush and Tony Blair were in power, pubs in England and Wales were permitted to open for 24 hours for the first time, The New Forest became England’s twelfth national park, and Ellen MacArthur had just completed her record-breaking single-handed round-the-world 27,000 mile voyage. A lot has changed in the boating world since then! Take a look around most sailing clubs and marinas today and it is clear that the boating sector has really taken to environmental change. LED lighting along pontoons, smart meters, waste management facilities with different receptacles for every type of boat waste, solar panels visible on many marina office roofs and yacht decks, on board wind turbines, hybrid engines, inline bilge filters and even electric car charging points in marina car parks. And there are chairs, bags, tablet covers and crabbing kits made from recycled sails, and chandleries stocking several types of environmentally friendly cleaning products.
Major events, campaigns and regattas have also recognised the importance of being environmentally sustainable. Sir Keith Mills’ America’s Cup Challenge ‘Race for Change’ was supported by The Carbon Trust, Powerboat P1 created its P1 Marine Foundation, and in 2014 (and again in 2015), the Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week designated the first Saturday of the regatta as ‘Green Blue Day’ to raise awareness of the event’s on-going commitment to sustainability. Ben Ainslie Racing (BAR), The Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy, and Sunsail have all achieved ISO20121, the international standard for sustainable event management with a helping hand from The Green Blue. But there is still more work to be done to protect the future sustainability of our marine ecosystem. By working towards an environmentally self-regulating boating community, The Green Blue aims to make efficiency savings, avoid red tape, help boaters and boating businesses minimise their impact on the environment, and safeguard the waters and habitats we enjoy and rely on for the future. Making the environment second nature has not been a quick fix but rather a voyage of small but meaningful transformations. A decade on and it’s exciting to think how much has been achieved and what further changes might be possible by 2025! Community News Alice in writerland Once upon a time, there was a Primary School in Durley and the Head teacher’s name was Kirstie Baines. For a few years, her pupils have entered the Rotary Young Writer competition and in 2015 Hamble Valley Rotary awarded first prize to Alice Savill, second prize to Georgia Richards and third prize to Josh Jefferies. Alice Savill’s entry was entered in the Junior Section of the District competition (there are more than 70 clubs in District) and her entry came first. Because she won the District competition, her entry was entered in the National competition (there are over 1800 clubs in RIBI) and she was ‘highly commended’, which means she was in the top ten. Hamble Valley Rotary hope some more primary schools would like to join in next year and if you think you are one of those, please let them know. If you are interested in joining or would like to mention a local need please get in touch through their website: hamblevalleyrotary.co.uk
Visitors and new members are always welcome. For further information please ring Mary Ford on 01489 584923. Warsash Choral Society The Society will resume their rehearsals on Friday 24th July at 8.00pm in the Hook Room at the Victory Hall, Warsash, in preparation for their autumn concert. The works they will be rehearsing are Schubert’s Mass in G, Mendelssohn’s “Hear my Prayer” and Handel’s “Zadok the Priest”. We urgently need extra voices to come and sing these beautiful works. If you enjoy singing then do come and join us; sopranos, altos, tenors and bass voices. We especially need tenors. Music is provided free of charge. For more information call 01489 892326.
Borough achieves Fairtrade status Eastleigh Borough Council has been awarded Fairtrade status for its commitment to Fairtrade principles. Eastleigh is now officially a Fairtrade Borough, after it made a resolution in 2005 to actively promote Fairtrade to consumers, businesses and community groups in the area. As part of the campaign, retailers had to pledge to sell more than four Fairtrade products and eateries had to serve Fairtrade tea and coffee. The campaign also secured support from faith groups, schools and voluntary groups, as well as lobbying businesses to promote the Fairtrade message in their working practices.
The next meeting of Titchfield Abbey W.I. will be held on Tuesday 14 July, starting at 9.30am at Titchfield Community Centre, and will feature an illustrated talk by David Allport MBE entitled “Snowballs in June” depicting life in the Falkland Islands. Visitors are always welcome to listen to the talk, meet members and to enjoy a cup of tea or coffee with biscuits.
Cabinet Lead for Environment & Sustainability Cllr Rupert Kyrle said: “I would like to congratulate everyone who has worked for this and it’s great news that Eastleigh is now a Fairtrade Borough”
There will not be a meeting of Titchfield Abbey W.I. in August as the group will be on their annual outing.
The ‘Fairtrade in Eastleigh Borough’ group will be presented with the certificate by the Mayor of Eastleigh at their AGM, 7pm on 15 July at Eastleigh Borough Council, Eastleigh House.

Adam Gardner, Communities Campaigns Manager at the Fairtrade Foundation, said: “We are delighted to welcome Eastleigh Borough to the Fairtrade movement which now unites over 1,500 communities worldwide, taking practical steps to making a fairer world trade system a reality.” Today, more than 1.4 million people including farmers and workers across more than 70 developing countries benefit from the international Fairtrade system, but there is still a long way to go.

Community News ESS employees get into character for cake sale ESS employees from HMS Collingwood got into character as they held a cake sale to fundraise for charity. ESS chose Cancer Research UK as their nominated charity for the year and asked employees to create unique and fun ways to aid in raising awareness and funds. Cleaning Supervisor Martyn Taylor and colleagues Pauline Sheath, Angie Whitney and Lyn Madden, who all work at the Phase 2 training establishment came up the with idea to get into character to make a cake sale more entertaining whilst raising money for the charity. During a morning break, civilian and military personnel were invited to purchase homemade treats made by friends and families of the team and take part in the “guess how many sweets are in the jar” game.
Tea by the sea in Hill Head Locks Heath Inner Wheel and the Rotary Club of Locks Heath joined forces and invited the senior citizens of the local area to an afternoon by the sea. Around 30 invited guests enjoyed free transport supplied by the Rotarians to take them to the Wheel House at Hill Head, a special building owned by the Fareham Rotary club. Throughout the afternoon they enjoyed the sunshine as well as being fed with sandwiches and cakes, made and supplied by members of the Inner Wheel. With copious cups of tea, they enjoyed a singalong with the U3A choir from Warsash. Tea by the sea is an annual event which is enjoyed by both clubs as much as by their guests. They have been lucky for a number of years to be blessed with beautiful sunshine.
Commenting about getting involved, Lyn remarked: “It’s all in aid for a good cause plus dressing up is a good way to bring fun.”
The guests are all from the local area and also enjoy facilities Communicare can offer.
The team were joined by five year old Mason Barnes, whose mum, Karen also works at HMS Collingwood. On helping out, Mason said: “Mummy made some cakes and they seemed to go really fast. I didn’t have a chance to try any!”
Rotary is quite involved in Communicare, as volunteer drivers throughout the week enabling relationships between passengers and club members to flourish.
The trio also received support from fellow co-workers and Lidl who all donated cakes to be sold. The cake sale raised £246.52 for Cancer Research UK.
Council bestows Citizen of Honour on three residents Eastleigh Borough Council recognised the excellent community work of three local residents by conferring them with a Citizen of Honour award at a Special Council meeting. The Citizen of Honour awards are given by the Council every two years in recognition of long and exceptional service for their community. In total 51 awards have been presented since 1986. They receive a Citizen of Honour badge and certificate. Alain and Mary Hunt were founder members of Bishopstoke Good Neighbours when the group was formed 29 years ago.
Tea by the sea
They have served the group as Chairman and Treasurer respectively and Alain also as a volunteer driver. Without Alain and Mary the group would not be as strong as it is today and it continues to fulfil a vital community need. They are shortly to take a well-earned retirement from the group and the Council was pleased to honour them for their long service and commitment to volunteering for their community. Kathryn Rau has been a volunteer for ‘Eastleigh Friends of People with a Learning Disability’ for the past 40 years. This valuable group provides social support for families and gives opportunities for those with a learning disability to enjoy outings and other social events. The Council was delighted to honour Kathryn for her outstanding contribution to charitable work in the community.
Cllr Jane Welsh with Kathryn Rau
Mayor of Eastleigh Cllr Jane Welsh said: “I’m delighted that one of my first duties as Mayor was to bestow Citizen of Honour awards to three such deserving recipients as Kathryn, Mary and Alain.” On the same night the Council also recognised 15 past Councillors for their long service to the Borough and awarded the status of Honorary Alderman. They received a badge and a certificate.

Community News Play a vintage 1930s theatre organ in Gosport
The Solent Singers music for a summer’s evening
Gosport’s Thorngate Hall houses a rare example of our musical heritage – a vintage theatre organ from the 1930s.
The Solent Singers will be holding their Summer Concert on Friday 17 July at The Victory Hall, Warsash, starting at 7.30pm with support from The Warsash Trad.
It started life at the Gaumont, Wood Green, rising up to entertain cinema-goers during the interval, and accompanying silent movies with dramatic music and sound effects. Organists from all over the country come to play it. The next concert will be on Sunday 19 July at 2pm, by Stephen Austin – see the What’s On section. He will play a wide selection of music, everything from show tunes and recent hits to classical favourites. A small band of enthusiasts at the Gosport Organ Club keep the instrument in working condition. It’s a wonderful piece of engineering, with over nine hundred pipes as well as a percussion section including castanets, xylophone, snare drum and sleigh bells. All the sound is made by real instruments, not simulated by electronics. The club meets on the second Wednesday afternoon of each month. Visitors are always welcome, whether to just listen, to see the maze of pipes and wires behind the scenes, or even to play the organ themselves. There aren’t many places where you would be allowed to get close to an instrument like this, let alone have a go.
The concert is in aid of the Free Memory Café in Warsash, which supports people suffering from Alzheimer’s & Dementia and their carers. Tickets cost £7.50 and are available from Sue McCaig on 01329 847990, choir members, on the door or by emailing solentsingers@yahoo.co.uk. Bar and raffle available. Solent Singers look forward to welcoming you to a wonderful evening of music.
Stained glass window unveiled A new stained glass window that was designed with the help of local junior school children forms a key feature of a new residential home has been unveiled by TV broadcaster Fred Dinenage.
Club chairman Peter Buckles, said: “You don’t need to be an organist, or even a serious musician of any kind. “Once you’ve sat at that console and experienced the wealth of sounds at your fingertips, and under your feet, you’ll be hooked.” For more details contact Peter on 01329 310592 or visit www.organfax.co.uk/clubs/gosport
The creation of the stained glass window was coordinated by Eastleigh Borough Council’s Public Art Officer, and forms a centrepiece of the new Netley Court development on Victoria Road, Netley Abbey that comprises a care home and residential flats for the elderly. The stained glass window was produced by professional artist Shelagh Davies with help from children from Netley Abbey Junior School who helped design the window. They came up with the idea to use their four house logos and the appropriate house colours into the centre panels with the sails of eight yachts. Local ward Councillor, David Airey said: “The stained glass window looks really fantastic and it’s great that local children from Netley Abbey Juniors had the chance to work with a professional artist to help design such a wonderful focal point for residents of the care home to enjoy.” Netley Court House was built in the mid-19th century and in 1954 the house was developed into a school for children with learning disabilities and extra buildings were added. The school was closed in 2006 and the children went to a brand new school in Southampton. The site has now been transformed into a 65 bedroom care home and 9 residential apartments for the elderly. 80 | The LOOP

Catering students provide fine dining experience Fareham College Hospitality and Catering students successfully ran the lunch and dinner services at Hallidays restaurant in Funtington last month. Following the great success of the restaurant takeover at Woodies Bar & Brassiere in Chichester back in January, ten Level three students were given a second opportunity to demonstrate their skills in another local restaurant. Students prepared, cooked and served high-quality dishes from the menu at Hallidays, which are particular favourites of regular guests at the restaurant. Customers were very complementary of the food and service, and thoroughly enjoyed their dining experience. Guest Wendy Byng said: “The students were certainly kept on their toes as they performed their duties in first class fashion. The food, supervised by the restaurant manager Andy, was excellent and we would have liked even more.” Level 3 Food and Beverage Service student, Rebecca Knight said: “I have really enjoyed the experience at Hallidays and I am grateful to have had the opportunity. The kitchens and training restaurant at College are great but it’s good to be able to practise what I have learnt in a new and challenging environment.” The Owner and Manager of Hallidays, Andy Stephenson commented: “The students have been incredibly organised and efficient, and they have worked so hard to deliver the best service. They produced excellent food and put to practise everything they have learned from health, safety and hygiene, to table setting and polite service. They pulled together to provide the high-standard service that is expected by our customers at Hallidays.” contactus@loopmagazine.net
