Q&A with Stephen Walford Pianist and Teacher Q Stephen, you have been teaching piano for twenty years in the area. How do you approach teaching? A The most important aspect is to try and pass on a love of music in a way that will encourage people of all ages desire to learn. That means creating an informal, enjoyable atmosphere where children and adults alike can flourish. Being positive and always encouraging produces great results. These foundations have to be in place in order for the serious side of technique and musicianship to mature.

Q What is the most enjoyable aspect of teaching? A For me, it is seeing the development over time of pupils who become very accomplished pianists. Perhaps in this day and age, something of the cultural is being lost, but through teaching, the younger pupils especially are gaining that important knowledge that can be so beneficial in enjoying life.

Q What styles and levels do you teach? A All styles, all levels and from age 5 up. You are never to old to learn!

Q Finally, you have performed in concerts over the years, do you have a favourite moment? A Undoubtedly, performing the legendary Rachmaninov Third Piano Concerto with the Southampton Concert Orchestra at Turner Sims Concert Hall, in a live hospital radio broadcast.

A totally new type of dog bed Berkeley Dog Beds is a new business based in the picturesque village of Wherwell, by the River Test in Hampshire. Owned by Martin and Gail Starbuck, the company has developed a full range of dog beds including a unique and innovative Waterproof Dog Bed Mattress that uses pocket springs sandwiched between a six inch thick layer of natural wool felt, lambswool and cotton. Martin said: “We have owned working Labrador gun dogs for thirty years and must have spent a small fortune on countless different types of dog bedding.” “Our experience was that the vast majority of dog beds available were simply not up to the job and that even the better ones were too flimsy, offered little if any insulation and joint support and soon started to break down and smell. “We found that we were having to replace our dog beds on average around once every 3 months.” Armed with a list of criteria that they wanted to see in their ideal dog bed Martin and Gail spent many months researching modern orthopaedic mattress technology available in quality human beds to arrive at an ideal specification. Working Labradors are notoriously hard on dog beds and theirs proved perfect testers of the prototypes until they arrived at a final design which ticked all the boxes.
Martin continued: “We now have a dog bed that is much more substantial than any competitor product, is 100% fit for purpose and still represents great value for money. “It looks superb, but we went on to develop a range of optional fabric covers to add a further touch of luxury and comfort making the beds a perfect match for both town and country homes.” In addition, the company has designed a range of raised and wooden beds to complete the range. All are UK-manufactured and supported by a five year guarantee against faulty materials and workmanship. Their website at www.berkeleydogbeds.com lists all the above products as well as containing some really useful information to help you choose the best bed for your four- legged friend.

Olive and Ted in Bishop’s Waltham Formerly Rethunk Interiors, owner Amanda Redwin rebranded the business in January this year. “The focus is still our painted furniture but I wanted to offer other product lines such as decorative home accessories, lighting and soft furnishings which complement our furniture perfectly but are not upcycled. Olive and Ted are the names of my paternal grandparents so we are still keeping it in the family.” Although not a gift shop, the year so far has seen a surprising number sales for birthdays, weddings and anniversaries and there is no reason why this should not continue for Christmas. Amanda says “We all love to have beautiful things in our homes. At Olive and Ted we take great care choosing high quality, eye catching pieces which will look amazing in any home”.

Wickham Beekeeper I keep British honeybees on farmland in Wickham taking the surplus honey each year but making sure I leave plenty for my bees to survive the winter. It is an absorbing hobby but not one for the feint hearted for it carries the risk of being stung. And yes, even after many years it still hurts, especially if you are stung on the head where there is only a thin layer of skin covering your skull. I can only describe it as like being hit with a sledgehammer. The plight of honeybees seem to be regularly in the news over the last few years. That’s mainly due the Varroa mite which jumped from the Asian bee to the honey bee. This mite, like the black rat in the medieval age transmits a whole host of viruses when it feeds off a bee. In fact recent research has shown that the DNA of the wild honey bee is identical to those bees managed by beekeepers. The conclusion shows that those bees in the wild are simply honeybees that have left managed colonies. These wild or feral colonies have been shown to die out within two or three years from Varroa. It is this rather than any change in farming practices and use of pesticides which has drastically reduced the number of honeybee colonies worldwide. That’s not to say that farming practices haven’t contributed. In particular a reduction in the amount of forage available. If you buy honey from supermarket it will be heated to 60°C and finely filtered to remove pollen grains because this prevents granulation. This process remove the unique aroma and goodness from Honey. However granulated honey is perfectly edible and all you need to do is gently heat the jar to liquidise it again. Local honey (i.e. Honey where you live) is the best honey for hay fever because it contains the pollen grains that hay fever sufferers are actually allergic to. Honey has natural antibacterial and anti fungal properties and has been recognised for over 2,500 years as an antiseptic. In fact it is the one substance in the biological arms race that bacteria has not evolved to defeat over many millions of years. I also make Beeswax candles, which is a natural renewable source.
10 | The LOOP
contactus@loopmagazine.net
95% of candles today are made from paraffin wax because they are cheaper as they originate from non-renewable petroleum. This is an oil-based, highly refined petroleum by-product that contains up to 11 toxic compounds and chemicals such as benzene and toluene, emitting toxic diesel exhaust-like fumes. Beeswax candles burn for two and a half times longer than paraffin wax candles and produce a brighter flame. The bees must fly 150,000 miles to collect enough nectar to produce six pounds of honey just to secrete one pound of wax. And for every 100 pounds of honey harvested the beekeeper can only obtain about 1-2 pounds of beeswax. That is why the cosmetics industry and candlemakers do not use it. Bees cannot produce sufficient wax to meet demand and therefore it would be too expensive for the mass market. I normally sell my honey by word of mouth but you can now buy it from Bouquets and Blooms above Hemmings in Wickham Square. Stephen Bentley

Finance & Legal Sevices Taxation of property and rental income
TAX
Looking for help and support?
As many people find it difficult to raise a mortgage they are forced to rent somewhere to live. This increase in potential tenants has been matched by people who have turned to the property market in an effort to improve on the low returns on their bank accounts. In the excitement and stress of acquiring property and finding tenants it is easy to overlook the fact that if you receive income from land and property in the UK you need to tell HMRC. The only exception is income of less than £4,250 from a lodger in your own home. You have until 5 October following the end of the tax year (5 April) in which you first received the income, to tell HMRC. For example, if you rent out a property you own on 1 March 2015, you need to tell HMRC by 5 October 2015. If you do not do this, you may be charged a penalty. It is best to tell HMRC as soon as possible after you start, as this will give you more time to consider record keeping, saving up for any tax bill, and how you are going to submit your tax return. You should inform HMRC of your property income no matter whether you are making a profit or a loss from the property. HMRC may ask you to complete a tax return, but if the rental profit is low and you are an employee, you may be able to pay tax through PAYE instead. HMRC let property campaign HMRC is running a ‘campaign’ about let property which provides an opportunity to disclose taxable income to HMRC on better terms than those available under an HMRC enquiry. You may be unaware that the income you have from property is taxable and the following are situations where this may arise,• Changes in relationships – if you move in with someone and rent out the home you previously lived in. • Homes occupied by relatives –a house owned by you and lived in by your son or daughter who contributes to its upkeep. Money you received from this property may be taxable. Remember that for married couples or civil partners, there are special rules for jointly held property, which mean that income is usually deemed to be split 50:50 – you cannot simply allocate the income to the partner with the lowest rate of tax. • Inherited property – income you receive from a property you have inherited is taxable • Property abroad – if you are resident in the UK you are taxable on your worldwide income. This means that if you let out your home abroad while you moved to the UK to find work, income from your home abroad may be taxable in the UK • Renting a house while you work away from home – you may have been unable to sell your home when taking a job in a different part of the UK. As a result, you may have decided to rent a house close to your new job, and rent out your home. Even if the rent you receive is matched by the rent you pay, you still have taxable rental income • Mistakes about the ‘rent-a-room’ scheme – the rent-a-room scheme exempts from tax the first £4,250 of income from letting a room in your home to a lodger. If income from lodgers in your home is more than£4,250 in total, (about £83 a week), you are likely to have a tax liability. In addition, rent-a-room does not cover renting the whole of your house. 12 | The LOOP

If HMRC finds you before you have voluntarily made a disclosure you are likely to face higher penalties. You may need to take professional advice first to ensure that you fully understand the position and make an accurate and full disclosure. Making a disclosure is a two stage process. Initially you will need to notify HMRC – and then follow this up with a full disclosure and payment within three months of HMRC’s acknowledgement of your notification. For help with this and other tax matters contact Moore McCusker Tax Associates on 01489 247047.

Community creates woollen window for charity shop Crafters in Cowplain have created a quintessentially English scene for The Rowans Hospice Up-cycling and Craft Centre to celebrate their 1st birthday. Shop Manager Julie Bennett had the idea of asking shoppers and Hospice volunteers to create items for the window that represented the English countryside. Julie said: “I asked people to make items based on the theme, but had no idea what to expect! People had their own ideas for items and I assembled the display out of the randomness that we received. I was amazed at the response to the appeal and the window display is a real community effort.” The display will also be on show at The Rowans Hospice later in the year so that staff, volunteers, patients and visitors can enjoy the amazing work. The project has been so successful that Julie is already planning to create a similar display for Christmas, featuring elves working in the toy workshop. Any crafter who is interested in taking part is invited to pop in to the shop to find out more. The Cowplain shop specialises in craft items, all of which have been donated to the charity. There is a wide range of stock including wool, fabric, sewing accessories, dressmaking patterns, craft books and magazines, papercraft, buttons and ribbons and accessories for vintage sewing machines. Julie and her team of volunteers also make things to sell including cushions and pincushion dogs. A small range of craft accessories is also available at our North End shop. “I had a look online and realised that we had this exact model sat in our middle room ready to be put on display! I brought the machine out to show the couple and the lady burst in to tears – it was the exact model that she had been looking for. She bought the machine on the spot for £285. “It is so fantastic that we were able to provide exactly what she wanted, and to raise money for the Hospice.” Julie added: “The Rowans Hospice Trading Company is always looking for donations, whether from crafters who are having a clear out or craft businesses who have discontinued lines they no longer need. It is a great way to recycle and also supports a worthy cause.” If you would like to take part in the Christmas window display, make a donation or are looking for a new craft project, visit the Up-cycling and Craft Centre at 63 London Road, Cowplain, PO9 9UJ. The North End Rowans Hospice Shop has also just started a craft group that meets on Thursday evening at 6.30pm. The group is open to all and you are invited to bring your own project to work on. If you are interested in the group, please contact Russell, the Shop Manager. contactus@loopmagazine.net

Autumn is the perfect time for planting Did you know autumn is the perfect time to plant a fruit tree? The earth is still warm from the summer sun and generally very moist from the damp autumnal atmosphere. Planting now gives the roots of a young tree time to settle and become established before the spring stimulates new top growth. So if you to look forward to a lovely crop of apples next year begin planting now! Most apple trees are pretty in shape and the Cox’s Orange Pippin is a good example and it’s fruit is still considered the most flavoursome apple in the world.

Greengage trees certainly need the winter months to settle in and the ideal time to plant them time is late September through to November. They can take a little coaxing to fruit, however once they are established and providing you plant them in a southerly aspect, you will be well rewarded. You will also find that the fruit is very sweet and a far cry from the hard tasteless greengages offered to us at today’s supermarkets!

Damson trees are another delight in the garden especially if you enjoy making jam! Did you know they originate from Damascus in Syria? Hence its older name “Damascene plum’. They like full sun, a sheltered position and good drainage, other than that they very much fend for themselves and only need pruning if you need to keep them to a certain size. There so many varieties of fruit trees available that you would be wise to do a little research before deciding which is best for your garden and your pocket. Perhaps you need some help? Then do call into Hambrooks of Titchfield where you will find our team of horticulturists who will be able to guide you with tips and advice. Or do call us on 01489 572285. www.hambrooks.co.uk

Local angler part of England winning team Local angler Loraine Perry is on cloud nine having returned from the Sea Angling Liaison Committee (SALC) Home Nations Shore International as part of the winning England ladies team. Loraine, 41, who lives in Lee-on-the-Solent, works as a courseware developer within the Future Training Unit at HMS Collingwood, Fareham. Of her involvement in the Competition she said “I am immensely proud to be part of the gold winning ladies team, it was a joyful and emotional moment when we went up to collect our medals and cup, as this is the first time the England ladies have won gold at the Home Nations. We gelled as a team and all worked really hard; everyone did their part in achieving the gold win.” The event, which took place in County Wexford, Ireland, was a Shore Fishing competition, with two matches held over 2 days. Loraine had the honour to be part of the gold winning England ladies team which consisted of 5 ladies fishing and a manager, with Loraine as reserve/assistant. Teams from Ireland and Scotland competed with the England ladies team in gold position after day 1. Day 2, however, saw a slightly tougher day with less fish caught, but they did win enough zones and points to retain their gold medal position. The Irish team won silver with the Scottish team bringing home bronze. In addition to the adults competition there was a junior section for under 16s and a youth section for under 21s, which saw both England teams win gold. There was also a bronze win for the England men’s team. The England Ladies team are entirely self-funded and receive no support or sponsorship, they pay their own entry fees, accommodation and travel expenses. Financial sponsorship is sought, especially as the Home Nations for 2016 will be held in England, with the England Ladies defending their title. If anyone is interested in sponsoring the Ladies team, please contact the Angling Trust Competitions and Events Manager (Tel: 0116 9061 301).

The National Watersports Festival – the people’s festival – celebrates another successful year! Another year, another highly successful National Watersports Festival (NWF) where the beach at Hayling Island in Hampshire was turned into a mecca for watersports enthusiasts over the weekend of the 4 – 6th September. Billed as the largest multi discipline watersports event in the UK, the festival regularly attracts around 500 competitors and thousands of spectators who make the annual pilgrimage to the island where a host of activates, races and events await them! Allan Cross, event director commented: “The event is completely free for spectators, so Hampshire residents have always been able to take advantage of what’s on offer including watching all the racing, floodlit spectacles, visiting the trade show and picking up tips, plus enjoying the wealth of food and drink stalls on offer. “Of course this year many of the visitors were also able to have a go at the various taster sessions where the experts were on hand to show the rookies their beloved sports and how to windsurf, kitesurf, stand up paddle board or get to grips with a spot of kitesurfing!”

Once again the schedule was absolutely chocker block with activities and events, both on and off the water with freestyle clinics, group SUP cruises, demos and pro races, including the new Chimet dash; all from the minute the event opened for registration at 8am on Friday, 4th September. As with any big festival the NWF also focuses heavily on the night time action with a host of new activities keeping everyone on their toes, including the NWF’s first ever SUP water polo event which was just as much fun to watch as compete in! The NWF also staged its legendary floodlit night windsurf event on the Saturday where the pros took things to another level and ‘wowed’ the assembled crowds with their freestyling jumps and phenomenal windsurfing skills. Of course the partying was never far behind with a mods n rockers theme and Andy Lewis and the Perfect Blue rocking the house down to the partying masses. The event has become known as the ‘people’s festival’ as there is no big title sponsor vying for the spotlight. Instead, The NWF is a consortium of clubs and associations- supported by the trade show’s big industry names - with the principle aim to get people on the water, having fun.

Charlotte Burns - Andark Charlotte first learnt to dive at Andark aged just 10 and has since dived multiple times in Andark Lake which is Europe’s first purpose built diving lake, which was only opened last year. More than double the size of an Olympic pool, the lake also offers state of the art conference rooms, a café, changing rooms, shop and Wi-Fi throughout. The lake itself is seven metres deep, with various sunken features to explore, including the bow of a 17 Century barge, a jet-ski and mirrors (to check yourself out!). Everything has been meticulously designed by divers for divers, to provide optimum safety, alongside a mixed range of activities to hone diving skills and teach the more advanced certifications. Alongside scuba diving, the lake also provides a safe and stunning location for triathletes, practising their open water swimming, kayakers and canoe enthusiasts practising drills, model boat owners as well as novice sailors (Andark is even planning on fitting wind simulators to provide the optimum conditions). Charlotte is also one of the only children to have ever dived the helicopter simulator at Andark, which is one of the only privately owned in the UK. It has been known to save the lives of pilots, trapped under water in a crashed aircraft, who practised a disorientating ascent back to the surface, at Andark’s pool.
It was at Andark’s centre in Hampshire during the inaugural Women’s Dive Day where Charlotte was officially presented as PADI’s first ever Global Ambassador. There were also certificates presented from PADI to Andark for supporting the sport of diving and Andark trainer, Carl Yates was awarded a Certificate of Recognition for ongoing support and development of outstanding divers.
Talks were given by Charlotte Burns and veteran diver, Jane Maddocks who was one of the team who excavated the Mary Rose from The Solent. Scubapro and Cressi brought along diving kit specifically designed for women which helped give visitors a greater idea of what’s available for them on the market.
The lake was the setting for PADI Refreshers, with some refreshers also taking place in the pool. The café was also open for food, drink and a relax by the lake in the summer sunshine. The day was an enormous success and Andark hopes it’s played its part in encouraging more females to try diving and give themselves access to a whole new world! 26 | The LOOP

Wickham festival nominated for top award A Hampshire Music Festival is in the running for a top national award after its most successful year yet. The Wickham Festival has been nominated in the “Best Festival (Capacity under 15,000) category of the prestigious Live UK Music Business Awards. Now in its sixth year, this is the only event committed to presenting awards to the business people who drive the country’s contemporary live music industry.
Organiser Peter Chegwyn said: “We are absolutely delighted to be nominated for this award. It is a tribute to all the people who work so hard to make this festival such a success and to create its unique relaxed atmosphere and family feel. “Although it is nice to see our efforts recognised like this, the greatest reward is seeing thousands of smiling faces – and the biggest testament to our success is that so many people come back year after year. “We had a record-breaking 26,000 admissions at this year’s Festival and we’ve already had a record number of people booking for next year before we have even announced a single act. They know there will be a top quality line-up and they know the atmosphere and amenities will be as good as ever. “People regularly come from all over the world to attend the Festival which really puts Wickham on the map. “This year has been our best festival yet, record-breaking in every sense, with great live music in glorious sunshine and not a single crime reported all weekend.
The awards recognise excellence and talent among promoters, venue operators, festival organisers and agents, through to artiste managers, tour managers, show producers, brand impact and record label partnerships.
“The question now is how do we top it next year?”
It is a fitting reward for the hugely successful event staged last month when record crowds flocked to the picturesque site to see the likes of the Proclaimers, 10cc, Billy Bragg and many more.
Full details of the Festival and how to buy 2016 Festival tickets can be found on the Festival website www.wickhamfestival.co.uk or the event’s twitter feed @festivalwickham
The 2016 Wickham Festival takes place from August 4-7. Anyone booking by the end of September can save a third on a weekend ticket – a reduction of £50 on a four-day adult ticket.

Tips for avoiding back pain when driving • Raise the seat as high as is comfortable to ensure maximum vision. • Check you have adequate head clearance from the roof. • Move the seat forwards until you can fully depress the pedals. • Adjust the seat height for good pedal control. • Adjust cushion tilt angle so that the thighs are supported. • Adjust angle of the back rest so it provides continuous support along the length of the back to shoulder height. • Don’t recline the seat too far back, 10-15 degrees. • Adjust steering wheel for easy reach elbows bent 30-40 degrees • Adjust lumbar support for even pressure along the length of the back rest • Adjust head restraint to reduce the risk of injury in an accident. Ensure the top of the restraint is no lower than the top of your head and not tilted forward. Take regular breaks when driving long distances, always think twice about undertaking a long car journey if you have acute back pain.

‘I must sort my wardrobe out this weekend’ How many times have you said that? Do you always find an excuse to put it off? • Wardrobe in a complete mess? • Full of outfits but nothing to wear? • New outfits that have never been worn? • So many separates but nothing matches? Well, let me help - spend a few hours of fun with me and you’ll be amazed just how many outfits you actually have and we get rid of the rest! How do you feel every morning when you open your wardrobe? Frustrated when you find outfits that don’t fit or don’t match? How often do you say ‘I’ve nothing to wear’ when looking into your full wardrobe? Do you often pick the same ‘safe’ dress and add a different scarf? How often do you shop for more of the same – another black dress some more white jeans. How many ‘old favourites’ do you have that you know you will never wear again? They all just hang there; some for many years!! Do you dream of opening a neat tidy wardrobe filled with colour co-ordinated outfits that can be seen at a glance with the knowledge that everything in there will suit you and fit you? Having spent the past 15 years in London organising the lives of my CEO and three executives I have decided to return to Hampshire and re-direct my organisational skills to those in need of a wardrobe re-vamp! Having run a fashion shop in Fareham for many years I feel I can give an unbiased opinion on your current outfits; advice on the styles that really suit you and advice on colour and shapes that are/aren’t flattering.
How it works After an initial chat on the phone I will make an appointment to come to your home; the session should take between 3-4 hours (approx. for a 4 door wardrobe). Everything will be removed from your wardrobe; yes everything!!! We will then dissect each garment piece by piece. Those that are a definite ‘yes’ will be placed back into your newly cleaned wardrobe; those definite ‘no’s’ will be put in a charity pile, the ‘not sure’ items will be placed on my rail to deal with later in the session. I find that sturdy, matching coat-hangers make an enormous difference to the way your clothes hang and look; I can buy these on your behalf and bring them with me for an additional cost. All wire coat-hangers must go!
Once we have completed the charity pile and returned the outfits that you are 100% happy with to your wardrobe we then tackle the ‘not sure’ rail; these are then tried on, one by one, and a decision is made! These outfits have obviously been bought for a reason; the fabric, the colour, the print, but they say if you put on an outfit and take it straight off more than 3 times it has to go; how many times have you done this? I usually find that some of the ‘not sure’ outfits can be transformed with a minor alteration; a lift of the hem or maybe a slight tapering on the hips; that’s when I get my pins out and we create an ‘alterations’ pile! By the end of the session you will be absolutely amazed at the result and thrilled each time you look inside your wardrobe! Just imagine - you will be happy with, and be able to wear, every single item in there! And leaving so much more room to refill it! Your remaining items can either be donated to your favourite Charity, sold through a Dress Agency or have you ever tried a Car Boot sale; there is a great one in Titchfield most Sunday mornings! Forget a Spa weekend – spending a few hours with me, clearing out your wardrobe, could be far more invigorating! Call me on 07747 410049 for a chat or email me at fiona@wardrobe-organiser.co.uk Fiona Barnes – Personal Wardrobe Organiser 07747 410049 www.wardrobe-organiser.co.uk Sessions can be booked from 9am – 1pm or 2pm – 6pm Monday to Friday. Evening and weekend appointments are available at an extra charge. Based in Fareham, I cover Southampton, Winchester, Petersfield and Chichester areas.

“Don’t Fret About Your Dirty Stone 0r Ceramic Tile Floors... We can Bring Them Back To Life.”
How Clean is Your Tile?
YES!! Including Those Filthy Grout Lines - And They Can Apply A Sealer To Keep Them Looking That Great Longer!
Natural Stone, Porcelain and Ceramic tiles are beautiful to look at and are worth every penny of your investment! but what happens when they get dirty? Do they lose a little of their ‘wow factor’?
TILE DOCTOR
Are you tired of getting down on your hands and knees to scrub grout lines or have you just given up? Well, fear not for the Hampshire Tile Doctor is here to help. They offer free advice and free quotations on how to clean and restore any sort of natural stone, be it Marble, Travertine, Limestone, Terracotta, Slate, Victorian tiles, etc. Imagine your natural limestone entrance hall floor tiles, your terracotta or slate kitchen floor tiles, or your ceramic bathroom wall tiles, even your granite worktops and splash-backs being made to look as if they were freshly laid.

Also, have you ever noticed the difference in shade of colour of the grout at the very edge of the room, which should be almost as new and the grout in the middle of the floor? It can be surprising how, even with regular mopping, the grout always looks dirty. Why? Because the grout channel attracts dirt which mopping often glides over. So why not let The Tile Doctor clean the grout so it looks new again? The old days of mops and toothbrushes are gone forever! And what if the grout is also badly stained? No problem, they can even re-co|our the grout for you from a range of subtle colours. After the cleaning process they apply a professional coating of an impregnating sealer, which sinks into the tile and/or grout and gives an invisible protective barrier that will leave your floors so much easier to clean. Sadly, some tile fitters never seal the tiles or grout they lay, which means you could damage your floor by spilling some everyday products you have in your kitchen or bathroom.
We do all the jobs tilers hate including
• Slate & Stone Re-sealing • Grout Cleaning & Sealing • Grout Colouring • Terra Cotta & Quarry Tile Re-sealing • Granite & Marble Re-sealing • Porcelain Clean and Seal • Bath and Shower Re-seals
Let the Tile Doctor clean and protect for you. Call now 0800 695 695 9 or visit www.hampshireti|edoctor.co.uk, for a free ‘demo’!

Portchester Memorial Gardens
Staying connected to loved ones Losing someone close to you is never easy – but even more so when it is your mum or dad who passes away. For those struggling to deal with grief, it can help to have the physical focus of a place where they feel close to their loved one, which is why many choose to inter their parent’s ashes within Portchester Memorial Gardens. Explains Sarah from Fareham: “My mum passed away three years ago and I still miss her. I visit the Gardens regularly to take flowers, sit at her grave and tell her about what’s going on in my life and what the kids are up to. The gardens are so peaceful and lovely, that I always feel lighter after I visit.” Memorials can be placed in a variety of themed areas cultivated to offer year-round beauty within tranquil grounds – including the Garden of the Sea with its sculptural anchors and wooden jetty, and the Hill of Roses, flooded with summer scent and colour. The sympathetic team at the family-run Memorial Gardens are experienced in helping to create fitting, lasting tributes where ashes can be laid to rest. Give them a call to discuss your requirements.
A place of peace and tranquillity Six acres of beautiful landscaped gardens offering a final resting place for the burial of your loved one’s cremated remains along with an individual memorial.

Gig Photography insight ‘new kid on the block’ well not so much a kid as a middle aged man exploring his passion for photography as a hobby ….to shoot live music at gigs has taken me to see some amazing acts and that’s one hell of a hobby to have! In just over 12 months, David Horrocks has gone from basic camera equipment photographing local pub bands, to the dizzy heights of shooting world renown acts such as UB40, The Three Degrees, Alexander O’Neal, Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel, 10cc, The Buzzcocks, Inspiral Carpets, Jack Savoretti and more using his beloved Nikon D700.

It all started about 12 months ago, my day job working for a Civil Engineer was somewhat full on in terms of travelling and a heavy work load, I needed to find a hobby for nights and weekends that would take my mind off the hustle and bustle of everyday working life, so, with that in mind I set out to buy a mid-range Nikon D3200 camera with standard kit lenses and off I went on my journey into the unknown, click click! I started with flowers in my back garden, wildlife, clouds and even fruit and veg! This really wasn’t doing it for me so I decided to try live music, I love live music and the thought of getting close to the stage was a big selling point for me. I started with a few local bands playing at a beer festival (always a bonus) and a couple of small venues that were dedicated to showing live music. After sometime I eventually got invited into a local music venue called The Concorde Club in Eastleigh. This is where I started to really understand the boundaries of ‘Gig Shoots’ and what was required to become a gig photographer and more importantly how to see angles of the artist in terms of their best position in the shot, this was difficult.
I soon realised that no matter what the venue was, the rule was ‘NO FLASH’, now in the early part of my relatively short career that was a serious downer for me, all of my images were dark and I was struggling to find half a dozen shots from say 300 shots taken on the night. So after much deliberation I researched the kit of the ‘Pro’s’ got myself a full frame camera with prime and zoom lenses, started to take note of key people in the industry who were producing some stunning work and latch on to their words of wisdom and tips on how to improve, all of a sudden the new kit and combined pro lenses were letting in more light and the results were outstanding, I was hooked!
I am now managing to get some great festivals and capture some amazing acts in all sorts of music genre from Folk – Rock – Indie – Punk! As they say in the business ‘Rock On Baby’ www.facebook.com/DavidHorrocksPhotography
Following the local pub, clubs and small venue scenes, I started to request access to bigger venues and use my small portfolio of shots to try and gain access to the stage area known as the PIT. The rest is history as they say and contactus@loopmagazine.net

Law Firm Appoints Trio of Leadership Roles
this year. My role will be to oversee the growth and continued expansion of the department.’
Eric Robinson Solicitors has promoted three of its staff to lead the firm’s departments in Family Law, Mediation and Dispute Resolution.
‘Strong leadership is fundamental to any team,’ says Catherine Maxfield, Managing Partner. ‘It is fantastic to have three such talented and experienced individuals promoted from within as they not only understand their area of professional expertise, but the ethos and structure of the firm as a whole.’
With over 10 years’ experience working for the Family Law team at Eric Robinson Solicitors, Vicki Rawlins has been appointed as its new Head of Department. Responsible for 12 staff that work within the team, Vicki is delighted to now be taking up the reins of the department. ‘We have reviewed our practices and, as a result, introduced a number of additional policies,’ she says. ‘My main focus is standardising our practices across all six of Eric Robinson Solicitors’ offices to provide a consistency which will improve efficiency, maximise the case flow and ensure clients receive the best possible service.’ Also working in Family Law, Beverley Pym is leading the firm’s specialist Mediation department. ‘This is very much the future of matrimonial and family law,’ she explains. ‘Now the government has made a Mediation Information & Assessment Meeting, or MIAM, compulsory for all those wanting to begin court proceedings for children or financial matters (unless there are exceptional circumstances,) people are starting to understand its importance.’ ‘Myself and Vicki are fully qualified Mediators, and the firm has been accredited with MIAM status so we can work with solicitors to provide the impartial Mediation their clients need.’ Craig Petrie has been promoted to head Eric Robinson Solicitor’s Dispute Resolution team. After qualifying with the firm, he has spent several years representing clients in property and financial disputes. ‘We have worked very hard over the last few years to build our reputation for litigation and it has been paying off in recent months,’ he explains. ‘The team has expanded considerably with three new appointments of highly experienced individuals

Space Times
• enjoyment and engagement in all lessons using the context of space
We are investing over £1.5M in education and outreach projects that harness inspirational power of ESA astronaut Tim Peake’s space mission.
• confidence in learning science and working scientifically
As British ESA astronaut Tim Peake counts down to his flight to the International Space Station (ISS), the UK Space Agency is launching and funding an array of new initiatives that will allow him to share his mission with the children of the UK, bringing the excitement of space to classrooms and venues across the country and encouraging interest in STEM subjects.
The ESERO-UK network of Space Ambassadors will help schools take part in a range of space activities that have been created to support Tim’s mission to the ISS. These activities will also include professional development for teachers.
The new projects were announced today (14 July 2015) at the UK Space Conference 2015. Minister for Universities and Science Jo Johnson said: “Tim Peake’s space mission will be a huge moment in British history that we want young people all across the country to share in. I hope that schools and students will get involved with these fantastic projects to follow Tim’s journey and learn alongside him as he flies into space to carry out experiments aboard the International Space Station.” Interactive shows at UK Science Centres Later this year, 20 of the nation’s top science and discovery centres will launch an inspirational and exciting hands-on programme of space activities and experiments for children, schools and families across the UK. Destination Space will be launched during the autumn and will run throughout Tim’s mission. It will give children across the nation the chance to learn about Tim Peake’s mission through hands-on experiments, rocket demonstrations, astronaut equipment and live video from the International Space Station.
• knowledge of career opportunities available to pupils who study science, technology and maths subjects • teacher confidence in teaching space topics
Example activities include: • free access to resources and activities developed to link with Tim Peake’s mission • ‘Rocket Science’ - planting rocket seeds that have flown in space • Astro Pi resources, which help teach computing using a Raspberry Pi computer • help in achieving the Space Education Quality Mark (www.esero.org.uk/seqm) • loans of a ‘Space Case’ of resources to support teaching of materials • in-classroom support to deliver inspiring space lessons • teacher Continuing Professional Development (CPD) delivered face-to-face or online
Tim Peake Primary Project The Tim Peake Primary Project, delivered to the country by the UK Space Education Office (ESERO-UK), co-funded by ESA and UKSA, will engage with 1000 primary schools, delivering a range of free space activities that will help primary students to engage with science, numeracy and literacy. Starting in September 2015 it will be working with primary schools to increase:
Soyuz TMA-19M spaceflight planned for November 2015. It will transport three members of the Expedition 46 crew to the International Space Station. TMA-19M will be the 128th flight of a Soyuz spacecraft; the first having occurred in 1967. The crew will consist of a Russian commander accompanied by American

and British astronauts. Astronaut Tim Peake is scheduled to be going to the International Space Station (ISS), on December 15th 2015, for Expeditions 46 and 47. He will launch on board Soyuz TMA-19M. UK-led Rosetta instrument successfully sniffed 67P The preliminary scientific observations of Comet 67P from Rosetta’s Philae lander published in special edition of the journal, Science. Highlights from the first scientific analysis of data include: • complex molecules that could be key building blocks of life • daily rise and fall of temperature • assessment of surface properties and internal structure Data was obtained during the lander’s seven-hour descent to its first touchdown at the Agilkia landing site, which then triggered the start of a sequence of predefined experiments. But shortly after touchdown, it became apparent that Philae had rebounded and so a number of measurements were carried out as the lander took flight for an additional two hours some 100 m above the comet, before finally landing at a site named Abydos.
The surface of comet 67P. Credit: ESA.
Some 80% of the first science sequence was completed in the 64 hours following separation before Philae fell into hibernation, with the unexpected bonus that data were ultimately collected at more than one location, allowing comparisons between the touchdown sites. Ptolemy science During Philae’s first bounce off of the comets surface, UK-led instrument Ptolemy sampled ambient gas and detected main components of coma gases, including water vapour, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. Smaller amounts of carbonbearing organic compounds were also detected, such as formaldehyde. Some of the compounds detected by Ptolemy could be the key building blocks of life. Formaldehyde, for example, is implicated in the formation of ribose, which ultimately features in molecules like DNA. The existence of such complex molecules in a comet, a relic of the early Solar System, imply that chemical processes at work during that time could have played a key role in fostering the formation of prebiotic material. Ian Wright, Professor of Planetary Sciences at the Open University and Principal Investigator for the Ptolemy instrument, said: “Notwithstanding the bumpy landing, our instrument was in action (and working perfectly!) a few minutes after the initial touchdown, making analyses of compounds from the surface of the comet. We discovered a large signal from an organic polymer rich in carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. We believe that materials like this were probably brought to the surface of the primitive Earth and are likely to have been involved in processes leading to the origin of life.”

NASA’s New Horizons probe has lifted the veil on Pluto On July 14, New Horizons performed the first-ever flyby of the faraway dwarf planet, zooming within 7,800 miles (12,500 kilometres) of its fascinating surface. The close encounter is giving researchers their first up-close looks at Pluto, since its 1930 discovery. New Horizons will continue beaming flyby data home for months to come, and it may cruise past a second distant object in 2019, if NASA approves and funds a proposed mission extension.
Rosetta and the UK With funding from the UK Space Agency and the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC), Rosetta is a mission with significant UK involvement from industry and science. Philae’s instruments include a gas analyser, the Ptolemy instrument, which was designed and built by teams from the UK’s Science and Technology Facilities Council’s RAL Space and the Open University. Ptolemy has an on-board oven for heating comet samples and collects data to analyse the relationship between water ice on comets and the Earth’s oceans. Ptolemy also studies the nature of organic material on the comet and uses this to investigate the relationship with similar materials from other Solar System bodies. One of the main challenges for all the companies designing instruments for Rosetta has been to ensure the components remain intact for ten years, while the spacecraft makes its way to the comet, and then work perfectly when it gets there.

New startup company set to be world’s largest diving pool Imagine having the opportunity to help create the world’s first commercial ‘Space Environment’ simulation facility, for aerospace research and development, including potential to train humans for spaceflight? Due to its size and construction, it also caters for divers and human physiology researchers – to better understand the effects of the marine and space environments on the human body and has educational use to encourage our children to be more aware of the vast richness of our oceans and the vast potential of space. Blue Abyss is building the world’s largest and deepest, multi-level, indoor research, training and development pool. Alongside hyperbaric chambers, commercial diving and micro-gravity facilities, this will be the UK and Europe’s premier marine and space research facility. Speaking to Blue Abyss’s John Vickers we discussed the opportunities that will arise from the Diving Pool. John said: “We are intending to create the UK, Europe and one of the Worlds Premier Marine and Space research, training and development facilities. “The Blue Abyss concept is focussing on providing a number of opportunities relevant to recreational and commercial diving, including Remote Operated Vehicle Development (ROV), Human Physiology Research and Aerospace applications for Space Environments and habitat creation.”
54 | The LOOP
contactus@loopmagazine.net
In addition, the creation of a STEM (Science Technology, Engineering and Maths) project, along the lines of the Bloodhound Project, Blue Abyss will feature a scientific research applications arm, which has been launched – SeaSpace Research Ltd, allowing scientists to utilise the cutting edge facilities, whilst also being able to provide a centre of training and research for search and rescue, military and educational development. John continued: “We are going to let schools train at our facility at minimal cost in order to encourage more children into diving and increase uptake of STEM subjects through a unique training environment”. We also spoke to Helen Patricia Sharman (OBE FRSC), the first Briton in space and the first woman to visit the Mir space station in 1991 is supporting Blue Abyss. Helen said: “Blue Abyss will provide a world-leading training pool for space EVAs and other activities where neutral buoyancy activities are required. Astronauts and other space professionals will want to come from around the world to use the massive, yet controlled, environment to reduce risk in space. Knowledge transfer between the different types of users will benefit everyone, divers and astronauts alike, and I can see plenty of international collaborations and business ventures starting life within Blue Abyss.” Major Tim Peake is Britain’s newest astronaut. He was named as one six new astronauts under the European Space Agency intake in May 2009. Having learned of Blue Abyss, Tim said: “I’m very supportive of what Blue Abyss are doing and see this future facility as something that does not yet exist in Europe and that would compete with, or potentially even surpass, what is available in the US and Russia” www.blueabyss.uk They can be found on Facebook/BlueAbyssPool and Twitter @BlueAbyssDiving
Voice FM’s Annual Christmas Charity Event Preparations are underway for Voice FM’s annual Christmas fundraiser. The event taking place on December 19 at The Talking Heads Southampton is now in its 3rd year and is shaping up to be bigger and better than ever. Born from an idea formed by Mark Tutton from The Talking Heads and Voice FMs Jodie Newman, this fun family event will benefit several local charities, most importantly the Children’s Wards at Southampton General Hospital, a place where both Mark and Jodie have spent a considerable bit of time, Mark as a parent and Jodie as a patient. Starting at 4pm and running late into the evening, Voice FM’s Christmas Charity Event is a one day festival with local and national bands performing free of charge along with a huge tombola with prizes kindly donated by businesses all over the world. Last year they had over £5000 worth of prizes and donations are already coming in thick and fast. As well as music and prizes there will be cakes and popcorn, magic and balloon modelling, face painting and crafts for the kids. This is a free to attend event. All attendees are required to do is to bring a gift, wrapped and labelled ‘boy’ or ‘girl’ and with a suggested age. These gifts will then be taken along to the Children’s Wards on Christmas Morning, where Santa will be distributing them to those children who are unfortunately in hospital at Christmas.
Last year they had over 300 donations and hope to better that figure this year. Bands will be announced over the coming months. They are looking for local businesses who would like to sponsor or donate a raffle prize to this incredible cause. All businesses who donate will be included on an exclusive page on the Voice FM website, mentioned on air and also included in their annual video of the event. They will also be listed on the event page on Facebook and through their social media. Please contact Jodie@voicefmradio.co.uk for more information or call 023 8063 4663. www.voicefmradio.co.uk

Gosport Ferry Vital Lifeline The ferry service is a vital lifeline to the people of Gosport. The ferry service delivers 72,000 trips and over 3 million passenger journeys per year. With the main roads in and out of Gosport already highly congested, the ferry takes the burden of the equivalent of 42 million miles off the road every year – the same as 84 return trips to the moon! That is why it is important that the company maintain investment in its fleet and sustain the unparalleled 99% reliability rate.
Harbour Spirit was officially launched in glorious sunshine on Wednesday, 13th May 2015. Mrs Sharon Edwards, wife of General Manager Keith Edwards presided over the naming ceremony and the ship’s blessing was performed by Rec. Phil Hiscock. Gosport Ferry staff were joined in the celebrations by representatives from the companies involved in Harbour Spirit’s creation including designers Houlder’s Limited and Tehnomont Shipyard, Pula.
A Brief History of Harbour Spirit Harbour Spirit, our new ferry was delivered to Portsmouth Harbour in early March on board a container ship, following a 3,000 mile journey from the shipyard in Pula, Croatia. The team from Gosport Ferry and Portsmouth-based marine design consultants, Houlder, worked closely with shipbuilders Tehnomont over recent months as the new ferry reached completion and sea trials were carried out.

After carrying out intensive crew training on board, to make sure all staff were familiar with the new vessel and its safety and emergency procedures. This was followed by a final survey and inspection by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency and the issue of a Passenger Certificate to allow the ferry to operate. Harbour Spirit came into service on the cross-harbour route on the 3rd July.
On-board Benefits Harbour Spirit can take up to 300 passengers and crew and will be used mainly as a harbour ferry, although it is capable of operating anywhere in the Solent.
The ferry has been provided with increased inside seating - 92 seats compared with 75 on the Spirit of Gosport. The forward saloon area is also more enclosed and better protected from the elements. We have improved facilities for wheelchair users, with dedicated wheelchair spaces in the main saloon, on the starboard side, and easy access to toilets for passengers with reduced mobility. In response to customer demand, more cycle space has been provided and we can also remove the seats on the aft end of the open main deck to give additional stowage for bikes and motorbikes if required.
Ferry Fact File Length: Breadth: On board capacity: Service speed: Number of crew: Total cost:

Gosport Ferry general manager, Keith Edwards comments: “We are delighted with the quality and design of our new ferry. It includes many improvements suggested by our passengers and will enable us to continue to provide high standards of comfort, reliability and service on the route between Gosport and Portsmouth for many years to come.”
Winning Name Harbour Spirit was the winning entry in our competition to name the new ferry and was suggested by Gosport resident, David Hurman. David said: “I thought it was important that the name of the new ferry should reflect the way that Portsmouth and Gosport have come together through the regeneration made to the Harbour area.”

Henry Cort students celebrate great GCSE Results Talented students at The Henry Cort Community College are today celebrating some excellent GCSE results. Across the board, the College results show a strong improvement with outstanding results in several subjects. The number of students achieving higher grades, A* - C, in Mathematics increased by 16% to 74% which is a record result for the College. English also saw a strong improvement of 8% from last year to 66% of higher grades. Record results were also achieved in Art, where an amazing 96% of students achieved the higher grades, and History, with 79% achieving higher grades of which 30% were A* and A. In Science subjects there are pleasing improvements with nearly two thirds of the year group achieving A*- C in at least two Science subjects. Overall 60% of students gained the ‘Gold Standard’ of five higher grades, including English and Mathematics The College also achieved a very strong result in the English Baccalaureate. This performance measure is used to show where students have secured a C grade or above at GCSE level across a core of academic subjects at Key Stage 4. Last year the College result was 27% but this year it has again improved strongly to 34%. The College’s performance at 34% is well above last year’s National Average of 24% students achieving EBacc. The EBacc consists of: English, Mathematics, History or Geography, the Sciences and a Language. Retiring Executive Principal, Phil Munday, explained that he was very proud of the students and the results that they achieved. He said: “I am delighted that so many students have achieved outstanding results. This reflects their determination and hard work and I congratulate them and wish them well for the future. I would also like to thank our staff who worked so tirelessly to support them. It is also particularly pleasing to see such strong results in the English Baccalaureate which reflects the broad curriculum which we feel is so important at The Henry Cort Community College.’’ He remarked, “Our role is to develop assured, capable, enterprising people. We strive to deliver customised learning programmes and to enable every student to achieve his or her personal best. I also wish my successor, Mrs Claudia Cubbage, every success as she takes over the College in September.’’
Dance and Cheer-a-Cality In 2015 we raised hundreds for our chosen charities, won the National and Southern ICC Cheerleading Competition at senior level 1 at our first year of competing, performed in many community displays , and also sold out Twice in our yearly showcase “Lights, Camera, Action” at the Berry Theatre.

There is much excitement at Locks Heath Infant School as the building work that started last October is nearly completed. This is part of a joint building project with Morgan Sindall carrying out major developments on the Junior School site too. The learning environment will be vastly improved for the current children and future generations to come, with 3 new classrooms and other developments to the site. The new classrooms will replace the temporary classrooms and the staff and children are looking forward to having the school all under one roof. New furniture and upgraded IT equipment will complete the modern look to these new classrooms and the children will start using them in September. Earlier this year, Mrs Cullum and Miss Burden, the Co-Headteachers, met with the school’s ‘Helping Hands’ to get their ideas on what they think should go into a Time Capsule. Since then the school has been busy collecting lots of things. Inside are newspapers,
plans, school uniform and much, much more!
12/08/2015 10:32
Year 2 children have written postcards to the children of the future and these also went in to the Time Capsule. The children have told them about life in 2015 and what they think life will be like in the future. Marcus in Class 10 wrote: “When you read this I will be a grown up and I will probably be in the armed forces or a wildlife producer!” The children had some weird and wonderful ideas about what the future would hold. Rylee from Early Years, Millie from Year 1 and Max from Year 2 helped pack the things in and are pictured with the Time Capsule just before it was buried. The Time Capsule is marked with a plaque so that future generations can easily uncover the ‘treasures’ in years to come. contactus@loopmagazine.net

Local car enthusiast’s visit to setting of sixties classic The Prisoner They say if you can remember the 1960s you definitely weren’t there. A decade that saw the emergence of the Fab Four, Cilla Black, Twiggy and the psychedelic world of London’s Carnaby Street. Harold Wilson was Prime Minister and petrol was 24 pence per gallon – that’s just 5.3 pence per litre.
Sanderson Business Centre CREATING CONNECTIONS & OPPORTUNITIES FOR LOCAL BUSINESSES
The swinging sixties heralded a new and exciting era in television production with inventive shows such as The Avengers, The Saint, Thunderbirds and the baffling The Prisoner starring Patrick McGoohan. Local classic car enthusiast and lifelong fan of the show Phill Upshall regularly returns to the series’ filming location, the Italianesque village of Portmeirion in North Wales, with his Prisoner Mini Moke car to attend the PortmeiriCon, an annual Prisoner convention. The star of this year’s convention was actor and writer Derren Nesbitt, who, even at the age of seventy-nine, is still acting and directing and is currently working with Ray Winstone.

Derren, best remembered for his Hollywood roles in Where Eagles Dare, The Blue Max and the Naked Runner was also a huge UK television star with roles in The Saint, Doctor Who, Space 1999 and of course as the menacing Number 2 in the Prisoner. He delighted the convention, recounting his role in the series and recalling his work with stars such as Richard Burton, Clint Eastwood, Frank Sinatra and Tony Curtis. Phill was happy to provide Derren and his wife Miranda with a Mini Moke village taxi to revisit the series locations during their stay.

Steam Pinnace 199 The Institute of Conservation (ICON) Awards team have announced that Steam Pinnace 199 has been shortlisted for the Institution of Mechanical Engineers Award for Volunteering in the Conservation of an Industrial Heritage Artefact. Built in 1911, 199 is owned by the National Museum of the Royal Navy (Portsmouth) but operated and maintained by museum volunteers known as Group 199. After a year of fundraising, she began a 100-year refit in 2012 aided by a grant of £50,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) and £30,000 from the Friends of the Museum. The group raised a further £30,000 from a huge range of smaller amounts and received a lot of support in materials and services from commercial firms. The group’s balancing contribution to the HLF award was made in volunteer man hours and over three years more than 13,000 volunteer hours was recorded. Work on the pinnace hull had to be detailed and carefully planned. The three-drum boiler required replacement of over 800 tubes and this has presented a number of serious, delaying problems. The process has been described as wall papering your hall through the letter box because of the very limited access to the tube ends. A traction engine boiler specialist, Mark Filer, was eventually found on the Isle of Wight and the boiler was sent over to him. Over ten months behind the plan, the re-tubed and independently certified boiler was returned to The Maritime Workshop in October 2014. Very sadly Mark died a few months later. His widow described it as his project of a lifetime. The rest of the steam plant has been removed from the vessel, stripped, inspected, defects rectified, recorded and replaced.
Later this year it is intended that 199 will be seen in steam around the Portsmouth/Gosport and Solent area. In the past she has attended events in the Historic Dockyard, the Southampton Boat Show and the Old Gaffers’ Festival at Yarmouth, Isle of Wight. Negotiations are underway for her to have a berth in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard’s Boatshed 4 which is currently being redeveloped. This will significantly increase public access to view her.
This year ICON had more entries than ever before and they have only shortlisted the top two entries in this category. The winner will be announced at an awards ceremony to take place on 22nd October 2015 at the Institute of Mechanical Engineers in London.

Gardening
Early autumn is the ideal time for planting evergreen trees and shrubs as the roots can get established while the soil is still warm. Water well when first planted and at least once a week if the weather stays dry.
Hedge your bets! As I write this it is pouring down with rain and I am hoping the summer is not over and that we get a late blast of sun in September. With all the rain and warm weather everything is growing like mad, hedges, shrubs, lawns and the last flourish of flowers. We are in the middle of hedge cutting season now as the bird nesting season is over we can now do all those big hedges that customers want reduced in height. I have a vast array of customers who like their hedges and gardens tidied up ready for winter as it is towards the end of the growing season the garden will stay tidy till next spring. September is the ideal time to prune conifers as it is not as hot as the summer months as you can put the hedge under stress by trimming in severe heat, also trimming in frosts can damage the immature new shoots. These are two of the main causes of browning in conifer hedges. I am also getting the results in for various planning applications for tpo (tree preservation order) trees that have been submitted over the previous months so this work will be carried out soon.
The end of September is ideal time to prepare your lawn ready for next spring. Scarify your lawn after killing of any moss and before applying a autumn feed use a spring tine rake to remove any thatch. This will help thicken up and make for a lush green lawn next year. Start to tidy up and get everything ready for winter. Any old crops can be discarded, as the leaves start falling rake them up of from borders put nets over fish ponds to stop any leaves from falling in. Apply a layer of mulch to borders either rotted manure or a woodchip layer this will start to decompose into the soil over winter and make the soil that much better for growing next spring. Last but not least enjoy your garden and every last bit of sunshine we get believe it or not winter will soon be here.

P&O cruises to raise money for young people with cancer in new charity partnership P&O Cruises is partnering with Teenage Cancer Trust for the next three years to raise funds for the charity and awareness of the valuable work it does helping teenagers and young adults with cancer across the UK. P&O Cruises will be raising money for Teenage Cancer Trust through a number of exciting staff and passenger fundraising initiatives across its family friendly large ships, Britannia, Ventura and Azura. All money raised over the next three years will go towards Teenage Cancer Trust’s vital services, including the funding of expert nurses and youth support coordinators, as well as specialist hospital units for young people with cancer. P&O Cruises Head of Entertainment, Paul Wright, visited the local Teenage Cancer Trust unit in Southampton. He said: “Meeting young people like Laura on the unit, really reinforced to me the phenomenal work Teenage Cancer Trust does on both a practical and emotional level for teenagers affected by cancer. As we take many thousands of families on holiday each year we wanted to recognise the incredible work carried out by the charity and go some way towards contributing to it. We will be doing this through fun, engaging activities which will appeal to children and teens on board our ships. I am delighted we will be working together and I hope we raise a significant amount over the next three years.” Siobhan Dunn, Chief Executive at Teenage Cancer Trust said: “Everyone at Teenage Cancer Trust is very excited about working with P&O Cruises. Despite all the hard work and progress we
have made in supporting young people, we still have a long way to go. For every young person with cancer we help, there is another we can’t. P&O Cruises will be helping us reach these young people. We feel very lucky to have been chosen by them and look forward to working together.” There are now 28 specialist Teenage Cancer Trust units in NHS hospitals across the UK and the charity wants every young person with cancer to have access to this specialist support, no matter where they live. Excitement builds as new leisure centre takes shape A new name Holly Hill Leisure Centre is the name of our new multi-million pound leisure facility being built on the site of the old Coldeast Hospital in Sarisbury Green. Almost 500 pupils from Sarisbury Infant School, Sarisbury Junior School and Park Gate Primary School voted from a choice of Holly Hill Leisure Centre, Woodlands Leisure Centre and Coldeast Leisure Centre. The votes were close, but Holly Hill came out on top! Building the Leisure Centre Construction of the new £9m Leisure Centre started in June. The initial grounds works and earth moving is progressing well and the steel frame should be erected in October. Following this, the roof and exterior cladding will be installed. By the end of 2015, the exterior of the Leisure Centre will be complete. Work will then start on the inside of the building to complete the swimming pool, install the heating and ventilation systems, complete the changing rooms and fitting out the facilities. The car park and landscaping of the site will be the final stage of the works.
Building work is scheduled to be complete in summer 2016. The Leisure Centre will then be handed over to Everyone Active who will manage and operate the centre on behalf of the Council. Separate box: Facilities will include; a 25 metre pool with 6 swimming lane, a learner pool, a gym with over 100 pieces of equipment, cycle spinning studio and dance studio There’s more… As well as the Leisure Centre, there will be 2 new football pitches for use by junior teams, a children’s play area and a multi-use games area (MUGA). Pupils from local schools have been helping us to decide what equipment should go in the play area. The play area and MUGA will be installed once the Leisure Centre and football pitches are complete. There is also a large area of land, already managed by the Councils Countryside Service and supported by volunteers, that includes woodlands, meadows, a pond and an orchard. No cemetery It has been decided that proposed cemetery will not be built at the site at this time.

‘Final Mission’ accomplished for charity
Two sailors from HMS Collingwood placed 5th when completing the ‘Final Mission’ European 4x4 Rally in aid of Help for Heroes (H4H) Charity recently. The Rally organised by ex-military off-road enthusiasts Keith and Tim Bowen was themed in commemoration of the D-Day landings and saw participants follow the route taken by the US 101st Airborne Division and Allied Forces during the Second World War. Petty Officers Mike Sawdon and Ash Peace along with Mike’s fiancée Lucy Weigel formed Team ‘Senior Service’. They joined 45 other teams who set off from Littlecote House Hotel on June 13th for a 12 day, 2,000 mile journey across 7 countries. In ‘Tonka’, the teams’ Land Rover Defender, the crew of three took turns at orienteering, driving and spotting. Journeying across Europe, often driving for 12 hours a day, the team navigated tough unfamiliar varying terrain to reach check points and took part in daily challenges to achieve additional points. The programme allowed teams plenty of down time to visit many military historical and poignant sites on route including Commonwealth War Grave sites, the Thiepval Memorial and John Frosts Bridge (A Bridge Too Far). Those involved also took part in a Last Post Ceremony at the Menin Gate in Ypres, where the Rally Children laid a wreath to ‘Remember the Fallen of WW1’. Commenting on the Rally, Mike stated “It was one of those things you just have to do in life; everyone should visit the War Graves at least. The things we have seen along the route have left a life impression. We really felt how costly war is and the damage it does to humankind. We experienced the sheer loss of life during WW2. The event was so well organised and thoroughly researched. We were incredibly lucky to not have had any mechanical problems along the way.” The Rally ended at Eagles Nest at Berchtesgaden (Hitler’s summer retreat) on the 27th June in Bavaria, Germany. On completion, an award ceremony was held locally and team ‘Senior Service’ were presented with a glass paperweight for placing 5th overall and 2nd within the military section of the competition. The ‘Final Mission’ was just that for the H4H 4x4 European Rally. The event which has taken place annually for the last five years concluded this year as they reached their fundraising target of £1 million for the Charity. Team ‘Senior Service’ raised £7,700 towards the final total and wished to express a special thank you to Beaumont Landrover, Richard Chassis and Babcock for sponsoring them.

Bright spark receives award from old crows Leading Seaman (Electronic Warfare) James ‘Jim’ Hick was presented the award for top student by the Vice President of the Association of Old Crows (AOC). Gathered outside Lewin Building, home of the Electronic Warfare (EW) Section at HMS Collingwood in front of colleagues, fellow course mates and members of the AOC, Jim was presented with the award. The Top Student Award has not been given to a student since 2012 and is allocated to the best individual on the Petty Officers EW Professional Qualifying Course. Vice President of AOC and EW Director at Systematic, Chris Howe MBE, who was invited in as a special guest, gave a short speech ahead of the presentation providing information about the AOC and the EW family across the world. Jim’s nomination for the award is in acknowledgement for his continuous and exceptional degree of EW knowledge, overall professionalism and ability; something which was recognised from the beginning of his course. Officer in Charge of EW Training Element Warrant Officer ‘Reggie’ Slaughter received many positive remarks not only from EW staff but also visitors to the section who were complimentary noting Jim’s obvious in depth knowledge in particular understanding the principles of EW. Commenting on his training Jim said “It has been an intense few months of study that has enabled me to lead a department when I go back to sea.” Jim was not only presented with the award, but with a cheque and a young executive professional package from Systematic. Systematic provides software to the RN and NATO and provides the tri-service EW Warfare Centre. Jim will soon be joining HMS Monmouth after completing his Senior Rates Leadership Course to achieve promotion.

Community News Fareham in Bloom open day The mayor and lady mayoress visited the garden at 4 Nightingale Mews which was open for the Fareham in Bloom charity event. Nearly 120 people braved the wet weather and enjoyed the complex planting and displays. They were also buying teas and cake despite the rain. A big thank you must go to all the ladies who baked the cakes, served tea and ensured everyone had an enjoyable visit. There were seven gardens opened in the borough for Fareham in Bloom and despite a day of heavy rain £1,500 was raised for the mayor’s charities. In total we raised nearly £2,000 for charity with 500 visitors which included those who visited on the two weekends for the National Garden Scheme charities.
The Hot Tub Man Comes Home Eighteen years ago, a young Hampshire man started working as an engineer for the UK’s only manufacturer of garden hot tubs, a company called Spaform. Whilst working for them, the youthful Jamie Giles learned everything there was to know about modern hot tub manufacturing, servicing, and repair, working in a number of departments before going out on the road as the firm’s warranty service engineer. Jamie left Spaform at the end of 2002 and, in January 2003, started working from home as ‘Spa Maintenance Services’, offering a repair service to the growing numbers of hot tub owners who now found themselves out of warranty. Though officially trading as ‘Spa Maintenance Services’, the company became better known by its alternative moniker ‘The Hot Tub Man’, as so many customers rang up to speak to Jamie, asking “is that the hot tub man?” Fast forward to 2015, and Spaform, a once proud and productive business, is no more having been bought up by a foreign competitor, the factory closed down, its assets sent overseas, and the brand disappeared. However, Jamie and his wife Julie have taken The Hot Tub Man from strength to strength, culminating in their recent move to new, larger premises on the Botley Industrial Estate opposite the site of the old Spaform factory where Jamie first started work in the industry 18 years before.

In the interim the company has moved three times in the course of its expansion; impressive growth achieved through some of the worst economic conditions since the 1930s. Jamie and Julie now feel that they’ve arrived at premises they hope to be in for some time to come. Jamie says “We’re really pleased and excited to be moving into our new home, it has great connections to the A27 and other main routes, and is only a mile or so from the family home. It also enables us to keep the levels of stock we need to service our customers, as well as display our range of pre-owned and new hot tubs for sale,” He goes on to say “I guess there’s an irony that we’ve now come right back to where Spaform used to be, and we’re still here and expanding, and they’ve gone.” Jamie and Julie were recently joined by Jenny, one of their four daughters, to help out in the office and shop, and Jamie says that later in the year he will be looking to recruit someone on the engineering side of the business. The Hot Tub Man now offers a vast array of products and services for new and existing hot tub owners including repairs, servicing, filters, spa care products, hot tub relocation, installation and commissioning, pre-owned hot tub sales, and new spa sales; including their own ‘Hot Tub Man’ brand

Community News The Friends of Fareham Community Hospital Annual General Meeting
The Friends of Fareham Community Hospital held their AGM on Thursday 25 June. They were joined by County Councillor Sean Woodward and Fareham’s new MP, Suella Fernandes, to hear a presentation by local GP Dr Alan McFarlane and Sara Tiller, Chief Development Officer of the Fareham and Gosport Clinical Commissioning Group. This set out the CCG’s plans for increased health provision in the community, and the role the Hospital is likely to play in this development, with more diagnostic and therapeutic treatments based there. The Friends were thanked for the valuable support given by their volunteers in the services the Hospital provides.
Teams Paddling Power raises funds for charity A Local IT Company pulled together in the name of charity at the Portsmouth Watersports Centre last month. Syn-Star Complete I.T. Solutions, based in Portsmouth, entered its six strong team into the annual Portsmouth and Southsea Round Table event, with all proceeds going to Autism Hampshire. Giles Cleverley, Director at Syn-Star commented: “We saw this as a great opportunity for a team building exercise. Working together to build the raft and then paddling in sync, without sinking. It was great fun. “Coming second in a field of eight teams was brilliant and with all the proceeds raised going to such a worthy cause, it was a terrific event. “Our staff are a great asset to the business, without their commitment and dedication to the quality and service our clients deserve and expect, we couldn’t continue to achieve our goals. It’s good to have some fun away from the office and apply our ‘pulling together power’ in another way.” Mike Ward Chair of Portsmouth and Southsea Round Table added: “Round Table is open to anybody to join; we are a group of lads, who get together a couple of times a month socially and organise and hold events and challenges to support local charities. “We are so grateful to those who take part and make these events successful, it’s a great way to have fun and make a difference to people’s lives through the charities we support.” The event raised a total of £1,200 for Autism Hampshire, an independent regional charity designed to meet the needs of families, young people and adults with autism.

Summer success for Locks Heath Swim School
Locks Heath Swim School ended the summer season on a high after being awarded the top visiting club trophy at the Southampton Summer Splash Open Meet. At the event, which was held in July at Southampton’s The Quays, the team picked up 12 gold medals, seven silvers and five bronzes. Amazing Amelia Ayling finished first in all five of her races, picking up gold medals for 50 and 100 fly, 100 and 200 free and 100IM.
In July Western Wards community came together to raise funds for the thousands of people affected by a series of earthquakes that struck Nepal in April. Representatives from local churches and other organisations were joined by Fareham mayor Councillor Michael Ford and mayoress Ann Ford, who together formally opened the cake sale. New Fareham MP Suella Fernandez was also in attendance, alongside recently retired MP Mark Hoban and Councillors Brian and Susan Brayford, and Councillor Trevor Cartwright and his wife Ruth. The cake sale raised £700 for the cause and will be donated to the Disaster Emergency Committee.
Lizzy and Cokey longing for their own home Lizzy and Cokey are sadly victims of cruelty and neglect. They have been rescued and are now in care where they are responding well to love and attention. Both are between 8-10 years old, have sweet characters and would appreciate a future with owners who will give them the love and security they rightly deserve. If you have the patience for them, considering their unhappy past, in a safe area with a garden for them once they are settled, and are interested in adopting these two cats contact 023 8043 5855.
Shannon Lamb successfully claimed first position in her 200 free and 100IM and was awarded bronze medals in her 100 back and free. Grace Goddard picked up a silver and a bronze for her 50 breaststroke and 50 free respectively. Lucy Newton managed two bronze medals, in 50 fly and 100 back. The boys were also on form, with Taylor Gargiulo, James Hall, Scott Hutin and Joshua Beaudro all claiming silver medals at the meet. Joshua also claimed a bronze medal at the event. To top the day off young Thomas Larby impressed all in attendance, picking up six gold medals in 50 and 100 fly, 50 and 200 free and 50 and 100 breast. Other competing swimmers were May Fletcher, Evelyn Hall, Hannah Roberts, Juliet Jarvie, Matilda Hall, Evie Selby, Isla Croll, Megan Watts, and Harrison Kennedy.
