Local volunteer group receive two national awards in one day At the National Historic Ships annual award ceremony on board HQS Wellington yesterday, Group 199 were presented with the Marsh Award for Historic Vessel Conservation. A few hours later at the ICON (Institute of Conservation) annual awards, Steam Pinnace 199 won the IMechE (Institution of Mechanical Engineers) Award for Volunteering in the Conservation of an Industrial Heritage Artefact. Group 199 are National Museum of the Royal Navy (Portsmouth) volunteers who operate and maintain Steam Pinnace 199, a 1912, 50 foot, ex-naval steam pinnace or picket boat. In 2012 they commenced a “100-year refit” of 199 which involved raising some £120,000 including £50,000 from the Heritage Lottery fund and £30,000 from the Friends of the Museum. Many other individuals, organisations and companies helped with donations and materials. The hull was stripped to bare wood, her engine, boiler and auxiliary machinery were removed for checking and overhaul as necessary. Several internal bulkheads and the machinery rafts were replaced. This was followed by a huge amount of preparation and painting. The group was also faced with replacing the 860 tubes in the boiler and had to seek help from Isle of Wight traction engine expert Mark Filer to undertake the work. This was Mark’s first

attempt at working on a marine boiler - their inherently compact design makes them very difficult to work on. Sadly Mark died a few months after completing the task – his widow said that it was the project of his lifetime. The boiler had 40 hours of steaming ashore before being lifted back into 199. The project required an enormous amount volunteer work; some 12,000 hours were recorded as a contribution to the Heritage Lottery award. The biggest problem that faced the group was to maintain morale and interest in the project for the volunteers as unforeseen serious problems arose and the length of the project became extended. The boiler work, for example, took a year longer than originally predicted. 199 is currently afloat again in Forton Lake Marina but it is planned to move her to Boathouse 4 in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard at the end of October where she can be seen by the public. A programme of events under steam for 2016 is being planned.

Bring on the Christmas Trees! Do you know that nearly 90% of British households put up a Christmas tree? And do you know that legend and lore surround the origin of the Christmas tree? One such legend is that it all began in the 7th century when the Devon born monk, St Boniface, went to Germany to teach the word of God, using the triangle shape of a fir tree to describe the Holy Trinity.
Choose your Christmas Tree with Hambrooks and make it fun!
The most reliable records indicate the tradition of decorating a tree comes from Germany in the mid 15th century, with the first known Christmas tree in England put up at the Queen’s Lodge in Windsor by the German born Queen Charlotte in 1800. In those early days, trees were decorated with apples, nuts, dates and paper flowers together with wax candles and the first electric fairy lights were used in 1882 by an associate of Thomas Edison. Well, whether it’s a real or an artificial tree you are after this Christmas, do call in and see
the wide range of both types that Hambrooks of Titchfield has on offer at their Garden Destination Centre. Additionally, you will discover tree lights, outdoor and indoor decorations and a pretty variety of glass baubles – in fact, everything you need to make your home feel truly festive this year! The famous Nordmann Fir premium cut non-drop real Christmas trees are available from Monday 23rd November in a variety of sizes so there is something to suit everyone’s taste. Prices start from £29.99 and all trees are net wrapped to enable you to transport them home with ease or we are very happy to deliver direct to your home (please ask for details). The trees are under cover so you can browse in comfort at your leisure. If you shop early, you have a better choice and all you need to do is to keep your fresh tree in a bucket of water outside away from the sun and wind until you are ready to bring it inside to decorate. Remember to cut approximately half an inch off the trunk before setting up your tree to help it absorb water. You can call 01489 572285 to reserve your tree www.hambrooks.co.uk

Wickham Festival Wins Top Award
The Wickham Festival has been voted the best event of its kind in the country. It has been named the Best Festival (Capacity under 15,000) at the prestigious Live UK Music Business Awards. They beat off strong competition from Dorset’s End of the Road and the Slam Dunk Festival in Leeds to claim the crown. The announcement was made at the gala awards evening in London last night (October 15) and is a fitting reward for the hugely successful event staged at Wickham in August when record crowds flocked to the picturesque site to see the likes of the Proclaimers, 10cc, Billy Bragg and many more. Organiser Peter Chegwyn said: “We are absolutely delighted to have won, especially given the quality of the opposition. “We were thrilled just to be nominated for this coveted award and then to make the top three… but to come out on top is a fantastic achievement. “We are stunned but very proud. It is a fitting tribute to all the people who work so hard to make this festival such a success and to create its unique relaxed atmosphere and family feel. “This year’s event was our best yet and I am delighted that has been recognised like this. Hopefully that will give us the impetus to make next year’s festival even better.”

Now in its sixth year, www.livemusicawards. co.uk is the only event committed to presenting awards to the business people who drive the country’s contemporary live music industry. The awards recognise excellence and talent among promoters, venue operators, festival organisers and agents, through to artiste managers, tour managers, show producers, brand impact and record label partnerships. Chegwyn added: “The success in not just down to our staff and the artists but also to the fans who have fallen in love with the Wickham Festival so it is only right we share our success with them. Until the end of October, anyone booking an adult weekend ticket for next year can get a £50 discount. “Although it is nice to see our efforts recognised like this, the greatest reward is seeing thousands of smiling faces – and the biggest testament to our success is that so many people come back year after year. “We have already had a record number of people booking for next year before we have even announced a single act. They know there will be a top quality line-up and they know the atmosphere and amenities will be as good as ever. “People regularly come from all over the world. This year we had more than 25,000 fans with not a single crime reported and we are looking forward to welcoming them back next year. “This year has been the best festival I have put on in 25 years, record-breaking in every sense. It has really put Wickham on the map – the question now is how do we top it?” The 2016 event takes place from August 4-7. To celebrate this award, until the end of October fans can save a third on a weekend ticket – a reduction of £50 on a four-day adult ticket. Contact eastfest@talk21.com for details. Full details of the Festival and how to buy tickets can be found on the Festival website www.wickhamfestival.co.uk or the event’s twitter feed @festivalwickham

Rosanna Celebrates Career Success Unsurprisingly, Rosanna went on to complete a law degree at Southampton University in 2010, study her LPC at the University of Law in Guildford before returning to legal firm Wilks Price Hounslow to start her training contract. She gained experience in contentious cases of dispute resolution, licensing and crime, but the vast majority of her work was continually in Family Law. ‘It wasn’t a conventional training contract as I was working in a place where I had experience and knowledge of the way the firm worked,’ she says. ‘In the first week, I had my own caseload and was taking notes in the High Court.’
Rosanna Hounslow, Solicitor in the Family Team of Eric Robinson Solicitors
It isn’t every 26 year old who can say she has spent over half her life working in law firms, but Rosanna Hounslow of Eric Robinson Solicitors has been recognised for her unusual wealth of experience by being accepted onto the Law Society Family Law Scheme. Rosanna Hounslow’s first experience of helping in a law firm was at the age of just nine years old at her father’s firm on the Isle of Wight. By her late teens, she was working at the offices after school by answering phones and doing clerical work. ‘It was amusing to see some people’s reaction when I went behind the desk and sat down before taking off my school blazer,’ she recalls.
After qualifying, Rosanna wanted to pursue her career independently, so came to the mainland to join the Family Law team at Eric Robinson Solicitors a year ago. Now, her experience and abilities have seen her accepted onto the Law Society Family Law Scheme, recognising her as a legal expert in cases of relationship breakdown and private law disputes regarding children. ‘I love my job and always found the utmost satisfaction in Family Law. You meet people at their most stressed and many are feeling vulnerable. Either their relationship has broken down, or they are in conflict over the most emotional issue – children. My job is to untangle the mess and find a solution so that people can move on with their lives. It is a very privileged responsibility.’ ‘Rosanna’s early exposure and experience of the law is reflected in her professionalism, service and how often clients are surprised at her age,’ says Managing Partner Catherine Maxfield. ‘She is a valued member of the team, and we are delighted at her recent accreditation.’

Polycast Limited is a foundry situated behind the Clock Tower in Warsash, It has been there since 1979, but was started in 1974 in Woolston by M.S Gibb Ltd. David Sadler became Chairman in 1984 and with the present M.D Andy Martin showed the two visitors around the factory. The foundry uses the Lost Wax process which has been practised for over 4000 years and enables the manufacture of very detailed castings in just about any air melt metal. A wax model is made then assembled to a runner system.
Compete head to head on world-famous race circuits. Events start with qualifying and races in entry level race cars, before progressing to the fantastic F1 experience. Catering options and a fully licensed bar are available. For full details, call the venue. Tel: 023 8026 9927

David, Suella, Sean and Andy in the wax room.
Showing the new semi auto fettling machine.
The whole assembly is coated in china and after the china has dried the wax is melted out, this forms the mould. The mould is fired and heated to about 1000°C, when it is ready for the metal to be poured in. The filled mould is then left to cool down before the china is removed revealing the cast form of the original wax. There are then many finishing techniques that can be used to produce the final casting that the customer requires. Polycast’s customers are mostly in the UK but the parts they make go into equipment that is sent all around the world. They supply many industries which include the Marine, Auto, Medical, Dentistry, Aircraft, Safety and many General engineering companies. In 2002 it became the only foundry that makes the Stainless Steel Spirit of Ecstasy for Rolls Royce Cars which are now made near Chichester. The casting is very highly finished and is sent to Rolls Royce in specially made boxes, from which they are lifted out and fitted to the car as they move through the assembly line.

A day in the life of a gig photographer You get asked to shoot all sorts! Following my last article ‘New kid on the block’ in issue 13 of Loop Magazine, I have been rather busy with a variety of shoots. September was a busy period for me photographing local bands for charity, capturing a world renowned multi-million album selling artist, photographing an award winning world rap star in front of thousands of people and covering a ‘distinguished gentleman’s ride’ motor bike rally in aid of prostate cancer, you get asked to shoot all sorts! Getting the kit ready? Starting the typical day would be ensuring the kit is clean, batteries fully charged with spares, memory cards erased, spare back up memory cards, checking the settings on the camera / lenses, it has been known to have in-depth settings within the camera set too high or too low such as ISO settings when shooting manual, this can kill a shoot from the out-set and before you know it you have 300 pictures that are either too bright or totally dark because the auto ISO setting ranges were incorrect. On the evening or day of the shoot, it’s always best to check through the kit again, double check the cleanliness of the lenses and if you’re going to a venue as a guest or a press access pass has been authorised, ensure you have the correct paperwork with you, there’s nothing worse than going to all the trouble of getting everything ready and travelling an hour up the road to arrive and be told ‘sorry your name is not on the guest list’. I print off emails and confirmation documents with key contact names and telephone numbers just in case, this can get you out of a tricky situation. Business cards are essential, not just for proof of who you are but more often than not someone in the audience will ask for your details to take a look at the pictures from the event.
What time to arrive? Arrive early, this gives you the chance to see the venue and layout, the lighting situation can vary so be on your guard with the settings on the camera, the venue maybe well lit, bright white lights, clear visibility to the stage, then BANG! The artist is announced over the PA and the stage looks like something straight out of a horror movie, black, dark, bright red, vibrant fluorescent greens, strobe lighting and the photographers worst nightmare? ‘smoke or dry ice’ machines. Be ready and let the challenge begin. Keep calm, don’t panic! Being in the pit can be somewhat daunting, thousands of pounds worth of camera equipment can be seen all around you, 10 sometimes 15 photographers running round like ants backwards and forwards and trying to get the best positions, I sometimes use the squash court scenario, I stand still and let the artist (squash ball) move about as he / she will no doubt be heading my way soon, unless they’re sat on a bar stool then get ready for a stand-off with the photographers to get the best position. It’s all good fun and its over before you know it. The artist may come out shouting and screaming, jumping up and down, but don’t fall into the trap of shooting every second, pick you moment, choose your angle and sometimes wait for the right shot to come to you rather than chase the subject. Kit check

How many pictures to take? As many as a you like I suppose, some venues / artists only allow the first three songs to get your pictures, and others let you stay for the duration of the show but to be honest, there’s only so many shots and angles you can take, get a feel for the lights as well, if the pattern of lights is say red, green, white, then repeats the same, aim to get your best shots when the lights are white, you will get sharper images there and then mix it up with other colour lighting. Only when you sit down and look at the pictures on your PC will you fully know how good the shoot went, this is a really good lesson time, to sit down and look at what went well and what didn’t, often I think ‘if only I had turned the shutter speed up’ it’s a complicated hobby and one we may never master! The residents of Hampshire will soon be getting used to a new name for Renault in the area. Picador Group PLC are a long established family owned and run business that, since its opening in 1963, have been synonymous with the Vauxhall Brand. With its first venture outside the General Motors banner, Picador are opening a purpose built brand new site, adjacent to its main dealership in Sholing. Group CEO Graham Jacobs commented: “We have been running a very successful used car operation from the land next door to our main site, so we felt the time was right to take the next step and expand our new car portfolio. “We are delighted to be representing such exciting brands with a clear vision of the future”.” Of course our core business is still with Vauxhall, but I feel the addition of Renault and Dacia will be adding another important string to our bow”. The all new showrooms will provide display for up to eight cars with the latest Renault / Dacia corporate identity. Picador have a long established record for high levels of customer service, having won the top honours with Vauxhall for four years in a row.

Spike Edney and his All Star Band to play Portsmouth Guildhall on 8th December How did the concept of the SAS Band come about? Back in the 70’s, I jammed with a bunch of like minded players at a regular Sunday pub session in Southampton. I daydreamed about having a larger band with horns, percussion and backing singers. I spoke to several musicians about the idea and was met with a luke warm reaction - “too much work and not enough money” they all said, so I shelved the plans, but held the thought. Then in 1994, I’d just finished a world tour for Brian May and his “Back To The Light” solo album, when I got the call from Peter Chegwyn at The Gosport Festival, asking me to put together a “Jam session” for the Friday Party Night. I decided to have a go at something more organised and called on Brian May’s Band, Cozy Powell (drums), Neil Murray (bass) and Jamie Moses (guitar) and then went about finding artists that I could approach directly. I didn’t want to go through management, as I knew they would refuse me. Chris Thompson had worked with us on The Freddie Tribute and some of Brian’s early South American dates, so he was my first call. I knew Tony Hadley vaguely from Queen days and I bumped into him at The Jazz Café in London. He said he wasn’t doing a lot since Spandau Ballet had split and I knew he was generally up for a laugh, so I asked if he wanted to join us and he accepted. I then went along to see ex Smiling Hard drummer, Larry Tolfree play with Kiki Dee and he introduced us. By the end of the evening she was on board as well. From the very start of Chris Thompson singing “Davy’s on The Road”, I knew it was the start of something! The SAS band was born... and quickly started to play private parties and corporate shows worldwide. A live TV Festival on VH-1 soon followed involving, among others, Chaka Khan, Tom Robinson and Graham Gouldman. I added a 3 piece horn section and later on, The Fabbagirls, Susie Webb and Zoe Nicholas on BV’s and my early 70’s dream of a large 10 piece band was now a reality. The rest is a continuing history of The SAS Band, featuring the best singers in the world singing iconic hits, as well as their favourite songs.
Who has been your favourite guest that has performed with you so far? I couldn’t name only one because there have been too many great ones to list them all, but it’s always nice to work with Jeff Beck, Roger Taylor and Roger Daltrey. Our regular favourites also are Madeline Bell (Blue Mink), Chris Thompson (Manfred Mann’s Earthband), Patti Russo (MeatLoaf ), Kiki Dee, Tony Hadley (Spandau Ballet), Tom Robinson and Midge Ure (Ultravox). A while back we were the Houseband for “The Meltdown Festival” at The South Bank and in one evening got to work with Ray Davies (The Kinks), Paloma Faith, Sandie Shaw, Carl Barãt (The Libertines) and the legendary Ronnie Spector (The Ronettes). It doesn’t come any more fun than that! Well..., except maybe playing along with Stevie Wonder on his version of “Happy Birthday” for Nelson Mandela at the 46664 concert at Radio City in New York!! That was a moment! What’s your most treasured memory from your 30 years+ with Queen? There have been so many unbelievable moments, such as Rockin’ Rio, Wembley and Knebworth, but I think Live Aid may just be the highest point. I had been on tour with Bob Geldof and The Boomtown Rats during December ‘84 when The Band Aid single was happening. On the tour bus one day he explained his concept for a simultaneous concert in Wembley stadium and originally Shea Stadium, New York. I laughed and said “in your dreams - it’ll

never happen”. He knew I was going back on tour with Queen in early ‘85 and he wanted me to sound them out to see if they were interested in playing at Wembley. It turns out they were... At the rehearsal everyone instantly agreed that we should pack as many of their hits as possible into the allotted time of 20 mins. I think we mapped it out in a few minutes. I had a stop watch and we put it together and played it very quickly indeed. On the day the time slot was perfect, as up until then the gig seemed to have a nice sunny afternoon picnic feel to it and the audience had a nice lazy vibe going on. That all changed when Queen started “Bo Rhap” and it turned into a proper rock show. The hands aloft in ‘Radio Gaga” is a sight to behold. Their career went through the roof after that set and I have seen it voted as the most influential performance in modern music history. Not bad for 20 minutes really! A close 2nd would be The Freddie Mercury tribute Concert which was was announced at the ‘92 Brit Awards in Feb, scheduled for 20th April and sold out immediately. Work soon began on putting together a stellar line up for the Wembley show. Queen were to be the band for the greatest line up of rock singers ever assembled. It was a period of high intensity and I have a vivid memory of a north London production hangar with the band set up opposite lines of folding chairs and I looked up to see David Bowie, Annie Lennox,George Michael and Elton John all sat patiently, lined up like a doctor’s waiting room. The gig was inspirational and all those egos were put aside in honour of Fred. It was televised around the world and seemed to me to be almost like a bookend to Live Aid. After the show was over, we all bundled off to Browns night club in the ironically named “Great Queen St”. The whole exhausting experience of the rehearsals and the manic, adrenaline fuelled show, took so much out of the four of us, that we all just stood staring at each other while the party raged. With Freddie gone, it was indeed the end of an era.
Do you have any special plans for your homecoming show in Portsmouth? I am currently cataloguing my collection of personal photos, stage clothes, instruments and tour memorabilia for an exhibition due to open in November at The Portsmouth Guildhall called “Spike Edneyfrom Landport to Live Aid”. This exhibition will chart my musical career from my first band in the 1960’s, through the tours with iconic soul Legends of the 1970’s then on to the world tours of The Boomtown Rats, Dexy’s Midnight Runners and Duran Duran, plus my longstanding association with Queen and the launch of The SAS Band a.k.a. Spike’s All Stars. I’ve also been threatening to write a book telling the whole gruesome story in gory detail, so I’d better get that rolling before I start to forget the best bits!! There’s also a suggestion of me being added onto the Portsmouth Guildhall’s “Wall of Fame” - I didn’t know there was one! Maybe someone’s pulling my leg...
What special memories do you have of performing in Southampton and Portsmouth? As a teen, I was always nervous about playing in Pompey, as I always thought there were so many good bands going around that it was difficult to be noticed and the audiences could be so blasé. Great bands like “Simon Dupree & The Big Sound”, plus “The Blackout” were tough acts to follow. In Smiling Hard we went off around the world assuming that nobody was bothered about us back home, but I remember at the John Peel Pub in Gosport one night, we played a homecoming gig and they were hanging from the rafters and went completely bonkers. We were knocked out and couldn’t believe that we had such a local following. We had great nights playing live for Radio Solent over at The Ponderosa in Boarhunt and then had several great shows at The Tricorn Club in Portsmouth with Dj Pete Cross. In 1994 The Gosport Festival gave birth to The SAS Band and The Brook at Southampton has been our spiritual home for 20 years. We’ve always had a warm reception and I’m really looking forward to The Brook on Nov 26th and The Guildhall on Tues Dec 8th. I think these are going to be special, fun nights and I’m hoping to catch up with lots of mates!!

How Clean is Your Tile? Natural Stone, Porcelain and Ceramic tiles are beautiful to look at and are worth every penny of your investment! but what happens when they get dirty? Do they lose a little of their ‘wow factor’?
“Don’t Fret About Your Dirty Stone 0r Ceramic Tile Floors... We can Bring Them Back To Life.” YES!! Including Those Filthy Grout Lines - And They Can Apply A Sealer To Keep Them Looking That Great Longer!
TILE DOCTOR
Are you tired of getting down on your hands and knees to scrub grout lines or have you just given up? Well, fear not for the Hampshire Tile Doctor is here to help. They offer free advice and free quotations on how to clean and restore any sort of natural stone, be it Marble, Travertine, Limestone, Terracotta, Slate, Victorian tiles, etc. Imagine your natural limestone entrance hall floor tiles, your terracotta or slate kitchen floor tiles, or your ceramic bathroom wall tiles, even your granite worktops and splash-backs being made to look as if they were freshly laid.

Also, have you ever noticed the difference in shade of colour of the grout at the very edge of the room, which should be almost as new and the grout in the middle of the floor? It can be surprising how, even with regular mopping, the grout always looks dirty. Why? Because the grout channel attracts dirt which mopping often glides over. So why not let The Tile Doctor clean the grout so it looks new again? The old days of mops and toothbrushes are gone forever! And what if the grout is also badly stained? No problem, they can even re-co|our the grout for you from a range of subtle colours. After the cleaning process they apply a professional coating of an impregnating sealer, which sinks into the tile and/or grout and gives an invisible protective barrier that will leave your floors so much easier to clean. Sadly, some tile fitters never seal the tiles or grout they lay, which means you could damage your floor by spilling some everyday products you have in your kitchen or bathroom.

HMS personnel get baking for Macmillan
HMS Collingwood’s Chaplaincy took the lead by kicking off this year’s series of Macmillan cake and coffee mornings. Organiser Charlotte Gilbert, who has previously been involved with the annual cake sale, said of the event: “I organised this due to experiencing several family members being affected by cancer. It’s an incredible charity which is very close to my heart, raising awareness counts.” The first of four showed a great start to the money raising events across the naval base with generous donations being placed in return for slices of cakes.
The second of three events was hosted by Chief Petty Officer Physical Trainer Leona Young, in the Sport and Recreational Centre (SARC), she spoke of her motivation towards the cause: “I lost my Dad to cancer and Macmillan supported the family really well. We need to raise awareness as it affects us all, directly or indirectly, at some point.” Leona was joined by Petty Officer Electronic Warfare Mary Wittin, who encouraged her team to show their support for the cause, she explained: “I know Leona and knew her father, so I have come to show my support.” Friday saw two more events supporting the charity within Atlantic Building. The first proved another successful year for the Babcock Integrated Training Support Centre (ITSC) team with various homemade treats on offer in exchange for donations. The organiser, Hayley Packer, commented: “The Macmillan Cake and Coffee morning is tradition. 90% of us have been affected and my family received support from Macmillan when my Grandfather died from the disease so we need to carry on supporting the charity.” Finally the last of the sales was arranged by Captain’s Personal Assistant, Lisa Lade and provided a spread of sweet to savoury items. Lisa commented: “Our Macmillan event last year was very successful and with a few of us being touched by the illness it’s good to give something back to the charity.” Contributions ranged from caramel cupcakes to chocolate brownies with each event including support and donations from various departments across HMS Collingwood, this included both civilian and military personnel. The final total raised this year is £779.

Festive Food Recipes for Chutney I have been a member of New Alresford W.I. For over twenty five years. I have been to Denman, the W.I. College near Oxford, a number of times and learnt all sorts of things from millinery to Thai cookery. At a great jam festival there I was lucky enough to win a first prize for my Christmas Chutney.

I started making Jams and Chutneys when we took over a large garden which produces lots of fruit. It makes a nice gift when you visit people and I also sell it at my W.I. meetings which helps with their funds. Over the years I have developed some recipes of my own - here are two that you might like to try.
Pumpkin Chutney 12 whole cloves 1 crumpled cinnamon stick 750 ml cider vinegar 750 gr peeled and prepared pumpkin. Chop or process it small so that it cooks down 500 gr Bramley apples, weighed after peeled and cored and chopped or processed small. (You can use windfalls) 220 gr onion, weighed after peeled and chopped or processed finely. About 2 medium onions 2 tablespoons of fresh, peeled ginger chopped finely 250 gr chopped apricots - I use kitchen scissors to cut them small 1 tablespoon of salt 500 gr golden granulated sugar 75 gr chopped stem ginger - the sort that comes on a jar with syrup. Put the cinnamon and cloves into the vinegar and heat up. Simmer gently with a lid on for about half an hour and strain into your preserving pan so that you have flavoured vinegar without the bits.

Add everything else to the pan except the sugar and stem ginger. Cook gently until everything is soft. This can take an hour or so, stir it from time to time. Add the sugar and stem ginger and cook until it is dissolved. Continue to cook until thick, stirring so that the bottom doesn’t burn. Spoon into warm sterilised jars and seal.
Rhubarb Chutney 1 tablespoon of mustard seeds 2 teaspoons of black peppercorns 1 teaspoon of whole allspice 2 oranges, zest and juice 1 kilo of rhubarb, washed and cut into small pieces 350 gr finely chopped onion about 4 medium ones 700 gr golden granulated sugar 300 gr raisins or sultanas 50 ml white wine or cider vinegar Grind the spices. I use a coffee grinder. Put everything into a preserving pan and bring slowly to the boil. Stir until the sugar is dissolved. Simmer till thick and well blended. Spoon into warm sterilised jars and seal. Both my recipes need to be kept for two or three months for the flavours to develop so if you want to make something in time for this Christmas, look up Delia Smiths Spiced Apricot and Orange Chutney which is ready after a month and tastes delicious with cold meats. 32 | The LOOP

How to Create the Perfect Cheeseboard As the festive season approaches buffets are set, dinner parties are hosted and hospitality ramps up. In all the festivities it’s easy to forget that a cheeseboard can be an easy-to-make impressive addition to any celebration. Rather than leaving it to the last minute and simply grabbing whatever is nearest, Louisa Mason from Flavour Tastings gives us some top tips to create an impressive cheeseboard. “Variety is the key to a perfect cheeseboard,” she suggests. “Combine different styles, colours, shapes and flavours so there is something for everyone.” Start with a soft and creamy cheese like a brie or camembert. Find one that is unctuous and will be at the peak ripeness when you are ready to eat it. This means keeping an eye on it in the fridge and even taking it out a few hours before eating to finish its maturing process. French Bries and Camemberts tend to be stronger compared with British ones so choose the flavour profile you most enjoy. For something really British try Isle of White Soft an unctuous creamy cheese made with Jersey milk, or the rich and deep flavoured Tunworth from Hampshire. Add to your board a hard cheese. The obvious choice is a mature cheddar but also consider less well know cheeses like Old Winchester, a cross between an Old Amsterdam, Parmesan and Vintage Cheddar produced in the New Forest. Continental style hard cheeses also go well such as an aged Gruyère. Whilst many people just use Gruyère for cooking this is a deeply complex cheese especially if you can acquire some Premier-Cru matured for 14 months. Of course, the nation’s favourite cheese is cheddar and this in itself comes in variety of flavours and styles.
Festive Food
From the more earthy, farmhouse flavour of an unpasterised Montgomerys all the way through to the sweet, soft Godminster Vintage, there is a plethora of good cheddars to pick from. Barbers 1833 Vintage Cheddar is a good mix of savoury and sweet notes which will suit most palettes and is over 2 years old.
Often over-looked are the semi-soft cheeses. This includes soft delicate cheeses like Cornish Yarg and also the washed rind cheeses. “Washed rind cheeses are seriously under rated in the UK.” Louisa tells us. “They are much more popular on the continent which is a shame considering how good they have become in the UK now.”She suggests looking further afield than Stinking Bishop too. “Sussex has an amazing washed rind cheese called Burwash Rose. It’s creamy, rich in flavour and washed in rose water giving it a lovely floral aroma.” If that’s not to your taste try a firmer washed rind cheese like Drunken Burt who’s producers are winning numerous awards. Of course, no festive board would be without a Stilton, nick-named ‘King of English Cheeses.’ There are now six producers who can make Stilton under the Protected Designation of Origin Scheme. Under these rules the cheese must be made in Derbyshire, Leicestershire or Nottinghamshire and only from pastuerised milk. This means the unpasteurised form cannot be called Stilton but is actually named ‘Stichelton.’ Stilton needs very little explanation but do try out the different producers. Colston Basset tends to be slightly lighter in texture whilst Cropwell Bishop has more tang. Stichelton can be very piquant and goes wonderfully with a glass of ruby port. For a truly stunning board consider the colour and shape of each cheese and try to bring in come variety. The other consideration is to include at least one non cow’s milk cheese like a ash-covered goat’s cheese or square ewe’s milk cheese like Flower Marie. “I love Flower Marie,” writes Louisa. “It’s definitely on our board this year. Soft, lemony with a lingering tang this Sussex cheese is a gem.” Finally presentation is everything so make sure you have a nice platter to serve it on. This can be wood, marble or slate and feel free to experiment with how you decorate it. Frozen grapes, walnuts, edible flowers, the list is endless. However, don’t get too carried away as sometimes less is definitely more! So what ever you decide to have on your Christmas cheese board, make sure you give it some thought. If you want some more ‘cheesey’ advice or want to buy some hard-to find cheeses then see Louisa’s website. www.flavourtastings.co.uk or follow her on Facebook and Twitter. contactus@loopmagazine.net

Festive Food Christmas Foodie Ideas from Food Fiend Experience
3. Roll the pastry and apple starting from the left hand side. Secure the pastry on the right hand side with water. Using some foil which has been folded into strips wrap the apple rose securely. Place onto lined baking sheet. Continue making each rose until 6 roses have been made. Cover each rose with foil so that apple is protected from over cooking and burning.
Christmas is such a special time of the year and I am delighted to be able to share some of my favourite recipes with you. For dessert I have chosen my Christmas rose which has the ‘wow’ factor in terms of appearance but it uses only 3 simple ingredients. I have then selected a couple of vegetables which may not be everyone’s favourite but with a bit of cooking creativity you just never know!
Christmas Rose Ingredients: 3 large (preferably) red apples 1 pack ready rolled puff pastry 1 jar mince meat
4. Cook in preheated oven at fan 180 for 20 minutes and then remove foil cook for another 5 minutes or until pastry is golden brown and cooked through.
Method 1. Wash and cut apples in half and core. Cover with lemon juice. Cut the tops and bottom of the apple so you are left with the middle. Take each portion and slice thinly (3mm). Place in glass bowl and cover with more lemon juice and microwave for 1.5 to 2 minutes on high until the apple slices are soft and pliable.
Tarting Up Brussel Sprouts!
2. Cut rolled pastry into 6 equal pieces along the shortest edge. Each piece of pastry will be approximately 5 cm by 20 cm. Blot any excess water from the apple slices before laying into the pastry. Take the first slice and place on the left hand edge of the pastry but making sure the apple slice sits a couple of cm from the top. Overlap the slices as shown in the picture below leaving a couple of cm at the end. Place a small length of the mincemeat under the row of overlapping apple slices. Fold the pastry over the mincemeat and cover the apple slices but ensure about 3 cms of apple is protruding from the top of the pastry.
Brussel sprouts can be dressed up by adding fried chopped pancetta or smoked bacon and garlic. Simply quarter Brussel sprouts and steam for 5 to 7 minutes until par cooked. Use tip of sharp knife to test that it goes into Brussel sprout easily. In a large frying pan or wok heat up small amount of olive oil and when hot add pancetta and cook for a few minutes until they start to brown add a 3-4 cloves of chopped garlic and then the quartered Brussel sprouts. Mix well in pan and season with pepper and salt. Keep warm in oven until ready to eat or cook just before ready to serve. Quantities: 450 g Brussel sprouts 110 g pancetta or smoked bacon 3 to 4 cloves chopped garlic Roasted Peppers and Celeriac Roasted peppers and celeriac add a beautiful combination of colour and texture to any meal. To feed 6 to 8 people use 6 multi coloured peppers (red, yellow and orange only) and one celeriac. Halve the pepper and remove the stalk and seeds and then cut into 8 pieces. Peel the outer layer of the celeriac and cut into pieces roughly 4 cm by 2 cm by 2 cm. Place cut peppers and celeriac in a large roasting pan. Drizzle with olive oil and season with pepper and salt. Roast for 35 minutes on fan 180 degrees. Check after 15 minutes turning vegetables over and return to the oven. M AN AG EM EN T
Coming up to Christmas, I am at my busiest time of year, cooking for lots of Dinner Parties right up through December, including Christmas Day itself. Whether I am cooking for private clients or at home, I always like to make a traditional feast, but also offering something a little different and exciting. However, a whole cooked Turkey, Golden Brown on the outside, beautifully moist in the middle, surrounded by traditional garnish such as Pigs in Blankets, Roast Potatoes and Greens, served on a large Platter at the centre of any Christmas table can be very impressive. If using a large whole bird you need to take timings into consideration to ensure the meat is cooked at the right temperature right through to the middle, whilst avoiding overcooking the meat on the outside and causing it to be dry. A few general tips are bullet pointed below to ensure a well cooked and moist Turkey.
2) Cover your turkey in rashers of thin streaky bacon to keep moist, 3) Cook in a deep tray, with a little water, covering with foil, but removing for the last 30 minutes of cooking time to crisp up the skin. (You can use the liquid for the gravy after) 4) Allow to rest for at least one hour. It should retain its heat really well if a large bird. 5) Always use hot plates and steaming hot gravy. 6) Carve horizontally into the breast bone, this ensures an even slice of turkey, rather than the first few slices being dry when carving vertically. Last year, I stayed true to using traditional Turkey but served a Turkey Wellington as the main centre piece. It’s easy to make a delicious stuffing from sausage meat, confit turkey leg meat, dried cranberries, lemon zest, finely diced shallots, sage and thyme. This was wrapped around the breast with Parma ham and then rolled in puff pastry. An excellent idea for serving your Turkey a little different. It slices really well after resting and looks beautiful on the plate. This year, I shall be cooking with game on Christmas Day, using Venison. Taking the Prime Fillet and roasting Rare, I will also be using the shoulder meat to make some individual pies to act as an accompaniment. Of course, serving with all the traditional flavours, Venison will go well with a good home made gravy, roast potatoes, honey roast parsnips, roasted carrots, Brussel sprouts, cooked with chestnuts and bacon, chipolatas wrapped in Parma ham, spiced red cabbage and stuffing. contactus@loopmagazine.net

‘Green’ school recognised in national awards
their Silver level STARS accreditation. The STARS scheme recognises schools that have demonstrated excellence in supporting cycling, walking and other forms of sustainable travel. Botley Primary is the first school in Eastleigh Borough to achieve their Silver STARS award, and one of only three in Hampshire. Throughout the borough six other schools have been successful in achieving their Bronze STARS accreditation and are now also working towards Silver. This October, during International Walk to School Month, schools from across the country are being recognised as pillars of excellence for their efforts to promote more walking, cycling and scooting to school. Ross Butcher, Chair of Modeshift, the scheme coordinator, said: “Modeshift STARS presents a huge opportunity for us to collectively increase the number of children and young people that get more active on the journey to school. In a time of tight budgets and the Government’s spending review just weeks away, it is vital that we recognise the efforts of our schools in making our communities happier, healthier places to live.” Cabinet Lead for Transport & Steetscene Cllr David Airey said: “It’s great that Botley Primary School has been recognised for its excellent work in encouraging more sustainable ways of getting to and from school. “Increasing levels of walking and cycling amongst young people will bring huge benefits in terms of reducing carbon emissions, fewer cars on the road and more active communities.”
Local schoolchildren from Botley Primary School have been recognised for their efforts to encourage their pupils to travel to school in greener, healthier and safer ways. They received the award at the South, South East and South West STARS Regional Awards event and were presented with
He added; “The Council works closely with schools on travel issues and we have seen an 8% increase in the numbers of children walking to schools in the borough since 2006, at a time when in many other areas fewer children are walking to school.” contactus@loopmagazine.net

“Forty-five year old Jo Corben has been associated with the club for the past 35 years or so, after all these years she still surprises. At Sheffield she had a tough three day programme of six events and returned with 6 Gold, 4 British Records and 1 European Record.
07745 977960 01489 574465
“Normally at these events she would concentrate on the 50m, 100, and 200m Backstroke but for Sheffield she also entered the 100m, 200m and 400m Individual Medley – one of the toughest of the swimming events. Age-for-age, year-for-year she is probably achieving some of her best results ever.
(Behind Sheila Hurst Florist)
“Jo is a great example to all at the Club and of all the swimmers he has coached she comes highly up the list of those that ‘just get on and the Hard Metres’.” Competing in the 45 -49 year age group her full results in order of racing were: 200 IM 1st 2.35.02 British Record 50m Back 1st 31.99 British Record 100m Ind Med 1st 1.11.99 200m Back 1st 2.23.66 400 IM 1st 5.27.24 British Record 100m Back 1st 1.07.27 British and European Records

Jo said: “I am absolutely delighted with my results. The records for the 50m and 100m backstroke were very unexpected, particularly with the 100m being my final event of a hard weekend’s racing. I’m really looking forward to next year and competing at the European Masters Championships in London in May. A big thank you as always to head coach Stewart Crowe, assistant coach John Molyneaux and my husband Tony.” Tony Corben, who also recently returned to swimming with Fareham Nomads, had a good weekend competing in just four events but swam the fastest times he has achieved in many years: 200 Free 10th 2.24.71 200 Fly 8th 2.45.83 400 Free 14th 5.19.00 100m Butterfly 12th 1.14.62 Claire Tagg, another ex-age group swimmer with the Club, also set good marks for the 100m Ind Med 1.24.65 15th and 200m Breast 3.15.16 6th. Stewart added: “This meet was being used to see if she would compete in the European Masters in 2016; these times definitely indicate that she will. Hopefully all three of these will be joined by many more from the Club.” 38 | The LOOP

Pure Foot Care is a privately run mobile foot health clinic covering Portsmouth, Fareham and the Meon Valley area.
FR E & E Q
The importance of good foot care Founded by Donna Powell (MCFHP MAFHP), a qualified foot health practitioner registered with the British foot health professionals who visits her patients in the comfort of their own homes or places of work. A wide range of services are available, including basic nail cutting, thickened nails reduced, corns, callous, cracked heels, fungal nails and verrucae treatments. Donna said: “Your feet aren’t just something at the end of your legs. They need to last a lifetime, so it is essential we look after them to keep us mobile and happy.” Diabetic patients especially have to take great care with their feet, as they have fewer defences against everyday wear and tear. The sugar effects the nerves in the feet causing peripheral neuropathy. This can produce feelings of burning, tingling and numbness and this lack of sensation makes diabetics more likely to injure their feet without knowing. Sugar also effects the smaller blood vessels in the feet, causing peripheral vascular disease which decreases the amount of blood, nutrients and oxygen that are brought to the skin, fat, muscles, joints and bones of the feet, which can cause an inability to properly heal a small cut to a broken bone. When a diabetic patient takes necessary preventative foot care measures it greatly reduces the risk of serious foot conditions. Pure Foot Care provides a professional and friendly service and looks forward to meeting new feet in the area. For more information contact Donna on 07432 568 981 or visit her website: www.purefootcare.com

Gardening Pruning your trees and shrubs The nights are long and cold and our gardens are our last thought as Christmas fast approaches but now is the time to prune various trees and shrubs. On deciduous trees and shrubs the leaves have all gone and it is easy to see the shape of the tree/shrub and if there is any dead wood that needs cutting out Hydrangea are best cut all the way down to the ground. This will ensure big blooms next year. Buddleia or butterfly bush as it is also known as can be pruned from winter to early spring. It is a real hardy plant and thrives well even when severely pruned. Cut back as low down as you desire making sure that the cuts are by buds to ensure no dieback. Apples and pear trees should be pruned now. Firstly cut out any dead or diseased branches any branches that are rubbing or crossing other branches. Then remove overgrown and smaller branches to increase light and air into the crown. This helps to stop disease and infection. In general your aim is to keep the branches that have developed and to keep the structure of the tree. Cut the branches at the node (the point at which one branch or twig attaches to another) or by buds this will allow the wound to heal and stop dieback. Do your pruning on a dry day and remove all your debris and put in the compost heap. Enjoy your garden and make the most of the winter’s sun.

Reverend Roland Wort has said farewell to HMS Collingwood, Fareham, as he has departed the establishment after 26 years’ service within the Royal Navy.
Celebrating 50 Years in Business Personalised Prints Acrylic Photo Blocks Wedding Signage Canvas Prints
After finishing his studies in Maths at Cardiff University and acquiring experience as a Baptist Minister, Roland wanted to apply his skills within a challenging chaplaincy environment and first joined the Royal Navy in 1981. Enjoying the busy and diverse role of Chaplain, his career has seen him provide pastoral care to all service personnel regardless of faith and beliefs. Roland’s final role has seen him working within HMS Collingwood for the third time in his career; he has previously served across the world on various ships and shore establishments which were all within the Portsmouth area. In 2013 he became one of four Royal Navy chaplains to be given the title of Honorary Chaplain to HM The Queen and he has also received the Telic Medal for serving on HMS St Albans in the Indian Ocean. The highlights of his career have involved working across the Far East in places such as Singapore, Vietnam and Thailand, along with spending four months working with the Royal Australian Navy. Roland, who lives in Winchester with his wife Sharon, said: “I’ve had a very interesting and enjoyable time in the Royal Navy; it’s been a great privilege to be a chaplain ashore and afloat.” Being a dedicated supporter of Southampton Football Club and Hampshire Cricket Club, he is looking forward to spending more time attending matches. He has also decided to serve as a Chaplain within the Royal Navy Reserves and become a Baptist Minister in his local area. 50 | The LOOP

Mayor of Eastleigh Cllr Jane Welsh, welcomed the installation of the statue of Charlotte Mary Yonge who was Eastleigh’s best-selling Victorian novelist who gave Eastleigh its name. The statue of Charlotte has been installed on a bench outside Eastleigh Railway Station as part of the re-development of the station forecourt. The statue was created by sculptor Vivien Mallock in bronze. Charlotte Mary Yonge was one of the most prolific and best-selling novelists of the Victorian period and was at the forefront of charitable endeavours to develop good housing and facilities for the people of Eastleigh. In 1868 she donated £500 towards the parish church (Church of the Resurrection) and was asked to choose which of the two villages (Eastley or Barton) the parish should be named after. She chose Eastley, but advised that it should be spelt ‘Eastleigh’ as we know it today. The scheme has been funded and managed by Eastleigh Borough Council and is a great example of partnership working by many groups to provide opportunities for writers and also environmental improvements to the town. The Charlotte Mary Yonge Fellowship, Eastleigh & District History Society, Eastleigh Museum, Hampshire County Council and many local writers provided information, support and enthusiasm for the project Mayor of Eastleigh Cllr Jane Welsh said: “This is a superb statue and a fitting tribute to Charlotte. I’m sure local people will enjoy it and be very proud of it. This is a great example of the Council’s commitment to community working and I hope it will provide interest, enjoyment and help raise awareness of the contribution Charlotte made to Eastleigh for many years to come.”

Southern Hydro Coatings We Provide the Magic! My name is Gary Coleman and my family run business, Southern Hydro Coatings, enters into the world of hydro graphic dipping, where practically anything non-porous can be transformed. As long as your item fits in my water tank, I can make it unique and distinctive – something you can’t buy off the shelf.
‘Manic’ Children’s Christmas Cream Tea with Santa
So what am I talking about? Most of us have attempted to wrap an awkward shaped present, it rarely turns out well. Imagine if you could dip that present into a liquid based pattern where every surface was perfectly covered – well that’s exactly what a water transfer does – it’s permanent and very hardwearing. Items that I have done include Xbox controllers, wheel trims, wing mirrors, mud guards for motorx bikes, scooter helmets to larger projects including motorbike fuel tanks, jet ski trims and a full Suzuki boat engine cover which was displayed at Southampton Boat Show. There are thousands of patterns to choose from and your colour choice and finish will really make your piece one of a kind. Popular ranges are carbon fibre, sticker bombs, Union Jack and skull based designs, however I can advise what will work on your item and fully embrace any ideas that you have. I am based in Curbridge and welcome anyone to come to the workshop and see what I do; there is a viewing window in the reception area. I also have some sample items that have already been dipped, please feel free to handle and take a close look. I’m open Monday to Friday 9am to 5.30pm but happy to see anyone outside of these hours, just contact me: Office: 01489 789385 Mobile: 07854 437164 Email: gary@southernhydrocoatings.co.uk

Local stage production team have Christmas wrapped up for families, with its complete Santa Experience on Saturday 19 December at the Historic Square Tower, in the heart of Old Portsmouth. There will be a ‘First Santa Experience’ early session for babies 18 months or younger, from 10am – 11am, with a photo opportunity with Santa, Mrs Claus and the elves. This will be at a fraction of the cost, as the babies are too young to get involved with the fun packed activity day. Pre-book your hour time slot for cream tea party with Santa, and your ticket also includes access to Manic Stage Productions all-day song and dance disco, plus many more seasonal goodies, making it a truly magical experience. Nicole Louise, director and co-founder at Manic said: “We ran a Christmas Experience last year and parents and children have been asking us to do it again. When the feedback and demand is high we want to give families what they want, that’s what Manic is all about. “We want to offer good value for money and a fabulous song and dance disco with a great party atmosphere to really get people into the Christmas spirit. The children can meet the elves and Santa Claus and his wife too. “It’s been great fun to organise this event with the team, adding all the little extra things to make it the perfect activity session filled with fun and excitement for all the family to enjoy.” If you want to know more about this event and time slots available to book your cream tea party with Santa, visit Manic Stage Productions www.manicsp.co.uk events page to book your tickets. Limited spaces are available, so book early to avoid disappointment. contactus@loopmagazine.net

Local man’s Lost in Space B-9 robot TITCHFIELD MOTOR WORKS
MOT and SERVICE CENTRE “Friendly, Honest and Professional” (Motor Codes Survey 2014)
Google us or call: 01329 843337 Sat nav PO14 4AD. East Street, Titchfield. Wishing all customers a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year The year was 1965 when the series Lost in Space, created by Irwin Allen, came to the TV. The series was based on the adventures of the Robinson family: Professor John Robinson, his wife Maureen, and their three children Judy, Penny and Will. The three other main characters were the pilot Major Don West, saboteur Doctor Zachary Smith and of course the robot, which was model B-9 of the class M-3, a General Utility Non-Theorising Environmental Controlled Robot (GUNTER). In the series Doctor Smith is sent to sabotage the Jupiter mission, which is to send a family to a planet orbiting the star Alpha Centauri, for the purpose of future human colonisation, by reprogramming the robot to destroy critical systems on the Jupiter 2 spaceship, so that the mission would fail. The B-9 you see pictured was purchased in 2007 from Mike Joyce of B-9 creations, located in the town of Deadwood in the United States. He is a full-scale 01 officially licensed replica which stands 6ft 6” and weighs 250lbs and is made up of over 1,500 individual parts. On full power-up he is operational as in the series (although its owner mainly keeps him on half-power). The local Lost in Space fanatic, who wishes to remain anonymous, said: “The episodes would start around 5 o’clock and I would rush home from school ready for each week’s episode and to make sure there were enough shillings for the telly. Each episode would end on a cliff-hanger and show a small part of the following week’s episode. I could not wait.” The robot was voiced by Richard ‘Dick’ Tufeld, and phrases from the series, as well as a few one-liners thrown in for fun, are included. The prop robot was operated by Bob May in the series and was created by Robert Kinoshita. The robot’s most well-known phrase was ‘DANGER, DANGER Will Robinson’. One of the robots has been donated to NASA’s Kennedy Space Centre, by Sheila Allen, the widow of series creator Irwin Allen. Finally, contra to popular belief he is not ‘Robby the Robot’. He is and was just known as Robot. 56 | The LOOP

Historic wreck found in Hampshire believed to be Henry V warship Historic England is taking steps to protect and investigate a shipwreck in the river Hamble that is believed to be one of four great ships built for Henry V during his invasion of France in the early 15th Century. Experts believe the wreck, which is buried in mud in the South Hampshire river, is the Holigost, a vessel which played a key role in two battles that broke French naval power and enabled Henry to conquer France in the late 1410s, serving as the flagship of the Duke of Bedford at the Battle of Harfleur in 1416, suffering serious damage, and being in the thick of the fighting off the Chef de Caux in 1417.
study. The Holigost fought in two of the most significant naval battles of the Hundred Years War, battles that opened the way for the English conquest of northern France.” Duncan Wilson, Chief Executive of Historic England said: “The Battle of Agincourt is one of those historic events that has acquired huge national significance. To investigate a ship from this period close to the six hundredth anniversary is immensely exciting. It holds the possibility of fascinating revelations in the months and years to come.” If verified, the Holigost would be a tangible link with the life and times of Henry V. Like all the great ships, it was built to further Henry’s war aims, but its decoration and flags also reflected both his personal religious devotion and his political ideas. Unusually, this included a French motto Une sanz pluis, ‘One and no more’, which meant that the king alone should be master.
The vessel was rebuilt from a large Spanish ship called the Santa Clara that was captured in late 1413 or early 1414. Its name is derived from Henry V’s personal devotion to the Holy Trinity. The find was made by Dr Ian Friel, a historian and an expert adviser to Historic England. He was re-visiting documentary evidence for his new book, Henry V’s Navy, which is available now. It looks at the men, ships and operations of Henry’s sea war, and tells the dramatic and bloody story of the naval conflict, which at times came close to humiliating defeat for the English.
Future scientific research on the ship could reveal much about late medieval ship design and construction, both in England and Spain. The wreck might also improve current understanding of life aboard ship, ship-handling and naval warfare in the 15th century. Given the care with which the ship was laid up, the site itself might also preserve information about contemporary dock-building and docking practices. Historic England experts use a range of research methods, including sonar, remote sensing including aerial imaging using drones, and dendrochronology. The remains of the largest of the four ships, the Grace Dieu, were identified in the river Hamble in the 1930s and have been protected since 1974.
Friel said: “I am utterly delighted that Historic England is assessing the site for protection and undertaking further

The History of Hendy Ford and Hendy Fareham. On 7th November 1910, Percy Hendy shook hands with Ford Motor Company boss Henry Ford to cement a partnership that would last 105 years and counting. In 1911, the first UK Model T landed at Trafford Park in Manchester and within a few short years it had become the biggest car production plant in Europe. Off the back of this success, Hendy opened new dealerships across the South West.
Consul/Zephyr/Zodiac range in 1956 all helped to boost sales. Still constantly expanding and evolving, the company also updated and extended the Vincent’s Walk premises in time to celebrate its Golden Jubilee as a Ford dealer in 1960. Two years later, the new Ford Cortina was introduced, and within twelve months had already reached one million sales.
When the war broke out, the Government’s call for increased food production meant that Hendy was given the task of servicing and maintaining Fordson tractors. In 1926, the Palmerston Road depot in Southampton brought the servicing and repair of commercial vehicles under one roof - creating the finest facilities and operation in the South. During the Second World War, Hendy Ford stopped production to help manufacture the Submarine Spitfire. Much loved by those who flew it, the Spitfire was the only fighter aircraft to be in continual production before, during and after the war.
Hendy has changed its identity on several occasions in the past to reflect both the times and the acquisitions that have taken place. In 1971, the entire Group adopted the ‘Hendy Lennox’ title. This move was made in order to project a stronger identity and a more cohesive internal organisational structure. Another significant trading title change took place in 1989 when the company’s car dealerships became known as Hendy Ford, in line with Ford’s new corporate marketing plans.
After the war, the arrival of the new Consul and Zephyr Six in 1950, the 100E Anglia/Prefect in 1953 and the powerful Mk.2

The remainder of the century saw a succession of developments. All were related to the core business of motor power but the company began to expand its activities into niche markets, including vehicle leasing and rental, motorsport
and leisure. Hendy Leisure Limited was set up to exploit the sales potential and Gentrac Road Trains began to run at holiday resorts, theme parks and other leisure complexes around the world, including places in the UK like the Eden Project, Kew Gardens, Bournemouth, Poole and Torquay. The last part of the century saw a flurry of business activity, with several location moves, depot closures and new site openings. Today, Hendy Van & Truck is a hugely successful aspect of the Hendy business, responsible for 30% of total Group turnover with 220 dedicated staff. In 2000, Hendy Ford acquired their Fareham site. In 2010 Hendy Ford reached a remarkable milestone - a 100year relationship with the Ford Motor Company. Victory Squadron revive Rainbow Centre garden A group of service personnel from Victory Squadron at HMS Collingwood came together recently to actively revive part of a charity run centre. The Rainbow Centre, based in Fareham, is a charity run programme providing Conductive Education to children with Cerebral Palsy and also offers a range of specialised services for adults with motor disorders aiming to provide a better quality of life for the individual. In 2007 the charity received funding to create and open ‘The Garden of Rainbows’ which hosts a collection of items such as mirrors, herbs and wind chimes to stimulate the senses.
CURBRIDGE • Free Wi-Fi • Live Music • Specials Boards • All Ingredients Fresh & Locally Sourced Where Possible • Gluten Free Options Available Including Beer • Quiz Night Every Tuesday • Themed Nights • Plenty of Parking • Small Boats, Canoes & Kayaks Can Moor at High Tide
When the team at the centre decided the garden was in great need of some TLC they contacted HMS Collingwood who provided the man power to carry out the project. This was a mark of Collingwood’s continued support towards The Rainbow Centre, with various donations contributed from the naval base over the years. The woman behind the garden restoration project, Office Manager Ann Stuart said: “The garden is part of the conductive education here and its purpose built, which is why the maintenance is so important. We are a small charity so it’s vital to receive the voluntary support we have today”.

The charity’s CEO, Lara Bull, also added: “Being a charity, you have to watch the pennies and budget carefully. This project wouldn’t be possible without the support as the garden must be suitable for anyone using it.”
✁
The team, currently undertaking their naval training at Collingwood, got to work sanding and varnishing the wooden apparatus within the garden with the main aim to maintain the safety and preservation of the area. Among those volunteering was AB Diver Martin Boson who said of the project: “It’s great to get involved with something like this and give something back to the community as charities generally have little or no funding for these types of projects”.

Vision: research in space environments and human spaceflight The UK Space Agency has published its National Strategy for Space Environments and Human Spaceflight.
on the ISS, coordinated by NASA, ESA, and the Japanese and Canadian space agencies, 3 new experiments led by UK research teams were selected by ESA for further definition. Of these, 2 were the top-ranked proposals in Europe in terms of scientific merit, judged to be ‘outstanding’ by the international review panel. Dr Timothy Etheridge, University of Exeter, will study muscle decline in space, and potential ways of counteracting this. Professor Donna Davies, University of Southampton, will investigate how a lack of gravity affects the respiratory system, using a novel 3D model of human bronchia. Both experiments will improve our understanding of human health here on Earth, as well as the effects of long duration human space travel. British European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut

The strategy is published ahead of British ESA astronaut Tim Peake’s maiden voyage, expected in December 2015. This covers a range of scientific and technical disciplines, giving a coherent picture for activities which use the space environment – from fundamental physics and novel materials to healthcare technologies and space science – and sets out the UK’s vision for human spaceflight. A public consultation on the Strategy was conducted in 2014, following which a government response was published and the draft Strategy revised.
The forthcoming flight of British ESA astronaut Tim Peake, in November 2015, will be a major milestone for the UK’s involvement in human spaceflight. Tim will be the first British astronaut to visit the International Space Station (ISS) and during his 6 month mission will conduct a range of scientific experiments which will increase knowledge, deliver benefits on Earth and test technologies for future missions further afield, such as to the Moon or Mars. He will also help deliver an inspiring range of outreach and educational activities.
Countdown to launch: new UK Principia website now live With just one month to go before astronaut Tim Peake launches into space, get involved with his mission using the new UK Principia website: www.principia.org.uk
Minister for Universities and Science Jo Johnson said: “From new advances in healthcare to getting our young people really excited about science, human spaceflight has the potential to deliver a huge range of benefits here on Earth. “This strategy outlines our ambition to advance scientific knowledge and create the right environment for human spaceflight and space environment research to boost growth and deliver new technologies that will improve everyday life in the future.” Dr David Parker, Chief Executive of the UK Space Agency, said: “Our new national strategy is all about making the most of space: exploiting the unique opportunities for growth which human spaceflight and associated research programmes can offer. “I’m immensely proud of British scientists, who really are among the world’s best, as demonstrated by the strong showing in the recent international space life sciences competition. “Space and life sciences are two areas where the UK has a proud heritage and the UK Space Agency is committed to helping researchers access unique facilities such as the ISS.” Most of the UK’s involvement in human spaceflight and research in the space environment is through the European Space Agency (ESA). At the 2012 ESA Ministerial the UK Space Agency made its first contribution to the International Space Station and ESA’s European Life and Physical Sciences Programme (ELIPS). In the latest Ministerial (2014) the Agency again pledged money to the ISS and ELIPS. This money - £49.2 million - gives UK researchers access to the $100 billion ISS programme, allowing them to use the unique environment of space to carry out research and make important advances in areas such as materials science, additive manufacturing and medical/biological sciences. UK success in life science experiments for space The UK has a strong research base and is rapidly establishing itself as a key player in space environments research. Mission overview From space experiments to family shows, a wide variety of exciting projects and activities can be found on the Agency’s Principia website. The new website will bring the Principia mission to the nation, acting as a one-stop shop for everything Tim Peake, and featuring information about big activities such as the launchday celebrations taking place across the country. Tim has selected the name ‘Principia’, to celebrate Isaac Newton’s ground-breaking text on physics, Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica (Latin for “Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy”), which described the principal laws of motion and gravity on which all space travel depends. Tim will fly to the ISS as a member of the Expedition 46/47 crew. He will be launched on a Soyuz from Russia’s Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on 15 December 2015 alongside NASA astronaut Tim Kopra and Russian cosmonaut Yuri Malenchenko. They will join the international crew already on the ISS, briefly bringing the number to nine, and then reverting to the more usual complement of six, before returning in May 2016. The ISS is a unique scientific research facility, allowing Tim and his crewmates to work on experiments that cannot be done anywhere on Earth. These experiments include physiology, biology, materials science, solar physics, radiation physics and technology demonstrations. Some of these experiments are intended to improve our understanding of fundamental science and some will contactus@loopmagazine.net

demonstrate new applications of science and technology – but all will help to enhance the quality of life here on Earth or help us in the next stages of human exploration of the solar system. Tim also wants to use his mission inspire people, especially children, to develop their interest in science and to learn more about the career opportunities that it opens up. There are many ways you can get involved – and the Principia website is the starting place to find out what is going on and how to can join in. At the moment they are busy rolling out an exciting programme of education and outreach activities for young people across the country. When Tim launches into space in December he will be the first British astronaut to live and work on the ISS. He was selected for his mission in May 2013, following the government’s increased investment in the European Space Agency and first time investment in the ISS programme. When Tim reaches his temporary home in space, he will start his own programme of scientific discovery. With the ISS being first and foremost a place of science, he will be working on experiments that cannot be done anywhere on Earth. Most of the projects running alongside Tim’s mission have some element of science or technology in them, cover a range of curriculum-linked activities and use the mission to inspire young people and increase interest in STEM subjects.

universe, and now we have convincing science that validates what we’ve long suspected. “This is a significant development, as it appears to confirm that water -- albeit briny -- is flowing today on the surface of Mars.” These downhill flows, known as recurring slope lineae, often have been described as possibly related to liquid water. The new findings of hydrated salts on the slopes point to what that relationship may be to these dark features. Scientists say it’s likely a shallow subsurface flow, with enough water wicking to the surface to explain the darkening.

Lujendra Ohja of the Georgia Institute of Technology said: “We found the hydrated salts only when the seasonal features were widest, which suggests that either the dark streaks themselves or a process that forms them is the source of the hydration. In either case, the detection of hydrated salts on these slopes means that water plays a vital role in the formation of these streaks.” Astronaut Tim Peake - Credit. www.principia.org.uk
NASA find evidence of flowing water on Mars In late September NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter provided the strongest evidence yet that liquid water still flows on Mars. Using an imaging spectrometer, researchers detected signatures of hydrated minerals on slopes where mysterious streaks are seen. These dark streaks were seen to ebb and flow over time. They darkened and appeared to flow down steep slopes during warm seasons, and then faded in cooler seasons. They appear in several locations on Mars when temperatures are above minus 10 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 23 Celsius), and disappear at colder times. NASA astronaut and associate administrator of the agency’s Science Mission Directorate, John Grunsfield, said: “Our quest on Mars has been to ‘follow the water,’ in our search for life in the 66 | The LOOP

Ojha first noticed these puzzling features as a University of Arizona undergraduate student in 2010, using images from the MRO’s High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE). MRO has been examining Mars since 2006 with its six science instruments. For Ojha, the new findings are more proof that the mysterious lines he first saw darkening Martian slopes five years ago are, indeed, present-day water. He said: “When most people talk about water on Mars, they’re usually talking about ancient water or frozen water.” “Now we know there’s more to the story. This is the first spectral detection that unambiguously supports our liquid water-formation hypotheses for RSL.” The discovery is the latest of many breakthroughs by NASA’s Mars missions.

The Diving Museum, located in No2 Battery, Stokes Bay, Gosport, is part of The Historical Diving Society and this is a total surprise to us all. It is a fantastic end to what has been a great year for the museum. Everybody concerned with the Diving Museum are enthusiastic volunteers, some have day jobs and all have families but they still found the time to put many hours into getting the museum opened and then to make it a success and a great experience for all the visitors over the last 5 years. The Family Friendly and Service with a Smile awards are nominated and voted for by the public so that has given all the volunteers great pride and satisfaction to know that the visitors have enjoyed their experience enough to vote.

Win-win in Wickham Organisers of the Taste of Wickham festival are celebrating once again after more than 5000 people flocked to market town’s medieval square to enjoy the event in September. Despite an unfavourable forecast, dry weather prevailed and visitors were treated to a huge array of experiences. As well as the 60 stalls filling the traffic-free square, some selling locally produced food, drink or crafts and others handing out samples to promote their services, there was also free entertainment appealing to both adults and children. Cookery demonstrations by local chefs alternated with live musical performances while children enjoyed the bouncy castle, craft activities and face painting, all put on without charge. The Southern Co-operative, whose financial support was the enabling factor in providing much of the free entertainment, ran a hugely popular stand with visitors lining up to taste the local cheese, chocolate and ales from the store’s Local Flavours range. Store Manager Stuart Heaton said of the event: “It was a fantastic day allowing local businesses and individuals to truly showcase their products and services. “It was a real pleasure for The Southern Co-operative to sponsor this year’s event and presented us with a fantastic opportunity to not only raise awareness of our locally sourced range, but also further support our wonderful local community.” Chairman of the Organising Team and local butcher Ben Sawyers spoke of how this year’s festival involved even more of the local community: “Taste of Wickham is all about showing off everything that makes Wickham so special, and we really wanted to strike a balance between offering people things to buy, eat and drink and introducing them to local activities, musicians and organisations.

“The achievement of this aim was clear to see around the site. Wickham Tennis Club’s mobile court for example was occupied throughout the day, and the cookery demonstrations and music performances attracted huge audiences.” Local organisations and residents and business owners were also heavily involved behind the scenes with over 40 volunteers taking on roles such as putting up marquees, setting out tables and chairs, car parking and stewarding. Army Cadets from Bishop’s Waltham and Fareham, Police Cadets from Portsmouth, Rotarians from Fareham and Lions from Meon Valley were among those helping out on the day. The event was opened by Mayor of Winchester, Cllr Angela Clear, who is also chair of Wickham Parish Council and a long term resident of the town. Her opening address paid tribute to the organising team and highlighted how events like these help to bring the community together and make it stronger.
Millie the cat in need of a home Millie is a dainty and affectionate cat of approximately two years, who loves company and attention. She came into care as she was unhappy living with a number of other cats. She needs a home in which she would be the only pet, and someone to be at home at least part of the day. She would be okay with older children. A garden to play in would be ideal once she is settled. If you would like to offer Millie a happy life, please contact 023 8043 5855.
New boxing centre extension opens
Mayor of Eastleigh Cllr Jane Welsh and Alex Arthur MBE, the former British, European, Commonwealth and WBO Super Featherweight Champion, officially opened the extension to Poseidon Boxing Club at the Ageas Bowl last month. Eastleigh Borough Council’s Hedge End, West End & Botley Local Area Committee (LAC) contributed £360,000 to enable the extension of the hugely successful Poseidon Boxing Club to be developed. These state-of-the-art training facilities will enable the club to offer a safe and effective learning environment for those wishing to get involved in boxing. The facility has tripled in size and will house three boxing rings along with associated fitness equipment and an area for community groups. The English Amateur Boxing Association is supporting the initiative and it is planned that it can develop into a regional boxing centre. Poseidon is leading the way in inclusive boxing having already hosted and run workshops for disabled participants in partnership with Coaching Hampshire and Isle of Wight and The Amateur Boxing Association (England). The extension would also allow more space for wheelchair access. Chair of the LAC Cllr Rupert Kyrle said: “The project is part of the Council’s priority of developing “a healthy community; active and lively with a spirit of togetherness, health and wellbeing”. “These fantastic facilities will also benefit local sporting groups who could relocate to this venue, along with local athletes and local coaches. “These are exciting times and I am sure that the Poseidon club together with other future projects will help to inspire local people to enjoy and or participate in a range of sport and leisure activities.”

Former Great Britain boxer and Poseidon Boxing Club Chairman, Lucy O’Connor said: “Since opening in February 2013 Poseidon Boxing Club has been a phenomenal success. It now has around 550 members many of whom try to attend training more than once per week. “These new facilities will allow Poseidon to increase the total club membership to around 1600 and in addition, it will help us to increase the number of sessions we run in the community.” Alex Arthur MBE said: “It’s an absolute privilege to be invited to the launch of this remarkable new facility. I have seen first-hand that boxing changes lives, it brings young men and now women off the streets and gives them focus and direction. It’s great to see local councils recognising these benefits and investing in them.” For more information about Poseidon Amateur Boxing Club visit www.poseidonabc.co.uk contactus@loopmagazine.net

Fareham College celebrates the completion of its innovative new campus
Education
It has been a particularly exciting start to the academic term for Fareham College, who are currently celebrating the completion of the brand new, innovative Bishopsfield Road campus redesign. The £16 million transformation of the College’s main site began in August 2015 and is the result of a year-long project to create state-of-the-art learning facilities for students from Fareham, Gosport and the surrounding areas. Alongside the College’s Centre of Excellence in Engineering, Manufacturing and Advanced Skills Training (CEMAST) in Lee-on-the-Solent, the new buildings offer some of the best learning and educational facilities in the country. The new campus provides dedicated new workshops for a wide range of construction trades, a digital industries lab, a new training salon for beauty and hairdressing students, a fully integrated media, music and performing arts suite and new theatre, plus an on-site gym and sports centre. The College’s commercially successful Avenue 141 fine dining restaurant, Salon 141 and Travel 141 travel agents continue to offer students a working dimension to their studies, and a high quality, but reasonably priced, service to the local community. The project has involved a combination of both new build activities and refurbishment of existing 1960’s buildings already within the College site, ensuring a highly sustainable and costeffective way of creating great new spaces. Careful architectural planning has ensured that all space is fully optimized and the new design has afforded significantly more classroom space than was previously available within the former site design. As well as extensive subject-specific resources, general purpose classrooms are equipped with technology including short throw projectors and interactive white boards, which are deliberately oversized to allow lecturers to write notes and annotations while video clips and visual assets are playing. Level 3 Sport Performance & Excellence student Oakley Crosswell says: “The classrooms are really good; they are large, clean, fresh and uncluttered which makes it a great place to focus on your studies. I couldn’t wait to start using our large sports hall and brand new gym – they are really exciting facilities!”
The new campus is based around an impressive outside courtyard space onto which ground floor training rooms and the Avenue 141 restaurant face, and this outdoor area provides a pleasant and green setting in which students can socialise and relax in between lessons; there are also several cafés and eating facilities for students to use during their working day. Level 3 Media Make Up student Zoe Barnes says of the new campus: “The new facilities are really high quality and there are many areas in which you can undertake independent study. The new salons offer a much more interactive experience as they have an open plan layout are they are industry standard, which prepares me for employment.” Public Services student George Wilshire says: “I think the new building will encourage students to come and experience college life at Fareham. The new IT suites in particular are really well equipped and much bigger with many more computers than before – there is a great atmosphere around the College.” contactus@loopmagazine.net

Eastleigh Men’s Shed, Based in Hamble it is one of 200 Men’s Sheds around the UK that exist to offer a space for men to meet, share tools and resources for working on projects of their own choosing and at their own pace. The members of the Eastleigh group have a wide range of skills learnt either professionally or through their personal interests. The shed is putting these skills to practical use by launching a Repair Café for people that don’t know what to do with broken items. Often they end up being thrown away when they are perfectly serviceable. The Eastleigh Men’s Shed Repair Café is held at the Pilands Wood Community Centre on the first Thursday of every month between 2pm and 4pm. Repair Cafés are free meeting places, all about skills sharing and repairing things together and enjoying a nice cup of tea. If interested in the Repair Café or joining the group contact Hugh Millar on 07788 418851.

Woofs and Wellies returns to Stansted Park Due to popular demand, The Rowans Hospice is delighted to announce that Woofs & Wellies is returning to the stunning grounds of Stansted Park on Sunday 29 November. Once again the event is being proudly sponsored by local veterinary clinic, Sanctuary Vets. Karen Kay, Events Fundraiser at The Rowans Hospice, said: “This event was extremely popular last year with both dogs and their owners dressed in their best Christmas outfits. “We are really excited to be able to repeat Woofs and Wellies and look forward to seeing hundreds of pooches and their humans walking around Stansted Park once again. “This is a great way to start off the festive season and we hope that local people will support the event. After completing the walk, the doggies will receive a medal and there will be the opportunity to purchase food from the farm shop to warm you up.” The 3km ‘walkies’ is open to all dogs to register and bring along as many human companions as they like. Registration is £5 per dog and there is a sponsorship target of £25. All the money raised from the event will go to The Rowans Hospice, which provides care and support for local people affected by life-limiting illnesses. Information and online registration is available via the website www.rowanshospice.co.uk or call Fundraising on 023 9223 7142. contactus@loopmagazine.net
