Happy New Year! Happy New Vegetables! start dabbling with if you are a beginner. Just give the plants plenty of water and they will reward you with an abundant crop until the first frosts appear. Furthermore, they provide a stunning display in their own right with their bold architectural leaves and orange flowers with their pretty frills. It is quite an adventure peering under the large leaves to find the courgettes that seem to multiply dramatically during the height of summer if you forget to pick them for even one day! However, if you do not have much space, just go for one plant, otherwise you will find there is no room for anything else. Potatoes are another good choice for intrepid beginners. Once again you do need space, although there are plenty of compact potatoes growers and containers on the market to enable you to grow small quantities on a patio or balcony. Once you have tasted a potato grown by your own fair hand you will never want to buy supermarket potatoes again! Don’t say we didn’t warn you! How about making a New Year’s Resolution to grow your own vegetables? A couple of highly popular television chefs have helped to make it so trendy it is now known as ‘Edible Gardening’, which is really just good old fashioned vegetable gardening to the rest of us! Courgettes are a good vegetable to
There is a lot to learn but don’t be put off by this – we all have to start somewhere. Just as long as you have a south facing spot, are prepared to do some digging and face a few disappointments you will be fine. So how about that New Year’s Resolution? www.hambrooks.co.uk

Oxygen Freejumping Lands in Southampton Oxygen Freejumping opened its brand-new park in Southampton last month. The £1.5m, 25,000 square foot trampoline park, only the second of the organisation’s elite freejumping parks, will have over 100 trampolines in its brand-new home in Antelope Road Retail Park, on Bursledon Road. Following the success of the firm’s first Acton site, Oxygen Freejumping Southampton will be bigger and better, with an even larger obstacle course, a 3,500ft mezzanine, two dodgeball courts, an airbag and walls the jumpers can walk up.
James Bond star and the recognised founder of freerunning, Sebastian Foucan, helped to design the Southampton site, ensuring the ultimate bouncy experience. Foucan, who played a memorable role in Bond’s Casino Royale, is Oxygen Freejumping’s resident expert and will be on hand to impress and inspire jumpers.

How Clean is Your Tile? Natural Stone, Porcelain and Ceramic tiles are beautiful to look at and are worth every penny of your investment! but what happens when they get dirty? Do they lose a little of their ‘wow factor’?
“Don’t Fret About Your Dirty Stone 0r Ceramic Tile Floors... We can Bring Them Back To Life.” YES!! Including Those Filthy Grout Lines - And They Can Apply A Sealer To Keep Them Looking That Great Longer!
TILE DOCTOR
Are you tired of getting down on your hands and knees to scrub grout lines or have you just given up? Well, fear not for the Hampshire Tile Doctor is here to help. They offer free advice and free quotations on how to clean and restore any sort of natural stone, be it Marble, Travertine, Limestone, Terracotta, Slate, Victorian tiles, etc. Imagine your natural limestone entrance hall floor tiles, your terracotta or slate kitchen floor tiles, or your ceramic bathroom wall tiles, even your granite worktops and splash-backs being made to look as if they were freshly laid.

Also, have you ever noticed the difference in shade of colour of the grout at the very edge of the room, which should be almost as new and the grout in the middle of the floor? It can be surprising how, even with regular mopping, the grout always looks dirty. Why? Because the grout channel attracts dirt which mopping often glides over. So why not let The Tile Doctor clean the grout so it looks new again? The old days of mops and toothbrushes are gone forever! And what if the grout is also badly stained? No problem, they can even re-co|our the grout for you from a range of subtle colours. After the cleaning process they apply a professional coating of an impregnating sealer, which sinks into the tile and/or grout and gives an invisible protective barrier that will leave your floors so much easier to clean. Sadly, some tile fitters never seal the tiles or grout they lay, which means you could damage your floor by spilling some everyday products you have in your kitchen or bathroom.
We do all the jobs tilers hate including
• Slate & Stone Re-sealing • Grout Cleaning & Sealing • Grout Colouring • Terra Cotta & Quarry Tile Re-sealing • Granite & Marble Re-sealing • Porcelain Clean and Seal • Bath and Shower Re-seals

Eastleigh Borough listed in Top 20 places to live in the UK
Save up to 70% on Inkjet Cartridges
The Borough of Eastleigh has been named in the Top 20 places to live in the United Kingdom. A study of quality of life indicators, published today (Friday 18 December) by the Halifax banking chain, puts the borough at number 18 in the national rankings. Factors including employment levels (Eastleigh has the third highest nationally at 85.3%), life expectancy and health, crime rates, average earnings - and even the weather - were taken into account in compiling the survey. The south east scores highly, accounting for 27 out of the top 50 districts in the study. Hart and Winchester are the other two Hampshire local authority districts to feature in the top 20. Leader of Eastleigh Borough Council, Councillor Keith House welcomed the survey findings. He said: “We are pleased that Eastleigh Borough has been included in the top 20 places to live in the United Kingdom. The Borough Council’s corporate plan commits us to promoting prosperity, environmental sustainability and the health of our residents and it is good to see that these ambitions are mirrored in the Halifax study.” Martin Ellis, housing economist at Halifax, said: “Many areas in south eastern England … perform well in terms of average earnings, employment rates, health and the weather. But the South doesn’t have it all its own way, and there are areas in the North which score highly on school exam results, and physical environment characteristics such as low population densities and low traffic flows.”

Bishop’s Waltham Rotary Club DO YOU KNOW how Bishop’s Waltham Rotary distributes the funds that it raises? Last month I drew to your attention that a portion of the funds raised goes towards the eradication of polio in the world. Every year, we organise the annual town Carnival, which is attended by thousands of locals and raises around £12,000 for local charities. So this month I would like to focus on these charities.
SECONDLY, in support of local youth: Rotary has provided funds and manpower to support the Youth Club’s recent hut renovation. The picture shows club members helping to paint the club hut.
FIRSTLY, in the community: The BW Gateway Club is a cause which we have supported for many years. They meet twice a month, providing support for adults with learning disabilities and to help provide activities which they would probably not otherwise receive. Here is Rotarian Linda Treveil helping Santa to distribute Christmas presents at the Gateway Club. In the last 12 months we have contributed funding to Guides and Scouts trips to international events in Austria and Japan. More locally we have assisted both BW Dynamo and Waltham Wolves football clubs. We provided physical support to the Young Carers weekend held at Fairthorne Manor, manning a cafe for these very deserving children while they let their hair down as they took a break from their demanding circumstances, and have funded an inflatable ‘table’ football game which was well received. The club also recently donated £1,000 to the Rotary Regional Support for the flood victims in Cumbia. The Bishop’s Waltham Annual Carnival is planned for Saturday 11th June, and forms part of a weekend of recreational activity, along with the Town Team’s planned celebration of the Queen’s 90th birthday on the 12th June. Over the past few years we’ve also supported all the local Lunch Clubs, the Community Responders, the Bishop’s Waltham Minibus and the BW swimming pool. We contributed to the Community Defibrillator, Citizen’s Advice, Waltham Chase Pre School, Swanmore film project, Upham Pond & the Flamingo Cricket Club. We’ve also donated to County/National charities such as Help for Heroes, Wessex Cancer, the Haven, Countess Mountbatten Hospice, the Rainbow Centre, Hampshire Air Ambulance, Canine Partners and Gift of Sight.

The stars rolled into town!
happy? Not quite sure? Try and play with the F stop setting, not only will this give you depth of field options, it will also give you options to get more light into the lens if you use a lower F Stop. It’s all about playing with the settings until you are happy, at the end of the day it’s a hobby, enjoy it!
Get ready with those camera settings, this should be fun! Following my last article ‘A day in the life of a gig photographer’ in issue 14 of Loop Magazine, I feared I may not get a shoot on the music scene to share with the readers in issue 15, how wrong was I. Spike Edney’s SAS Band (Spikes All Stars) were in town and playing live at The Brook Tavern Southampton, who am I to pass up on the chance to shoot not one legend but a whole load of ‘Stars’ all on the same stage. Spike Edney is one of the most respected and versatile session musicians and musical directors in the business and Issue 14 of Loop magazine had a great article describing his work. In addition to being legendary rock band Queen’s musical director and keyboard player since 1984, British multi-instrumentalist Spike has toured, recorded and performed with the living and late legends of our time for over 40 years, including, but not limited to, Bon Jovi, The Rolling Stones, and Eric Clapton. It is from this extensive network of musician friends he calls upon to put together each unique show which proves to be a sell-out show every time. The Brook Tavern gig delivered bucket loads of talent and entertainment.
During the show Spike entertained the crowd with musicians and artists both young and mature, from as young as 11 years old (The Bobbs Band whom supported the main act) to legendary artists from Meatloaf (Patti Russo), 10cc (Graham Gouldman), The Spice Girls (Melanie Chisolm better known as Mel C or Sporty Spice), Bucks Fizz (Cheryl Baker) and a Soul / Jazz legend (Madeline Bell) For the budding photographer wondering about what settings are used during shoots like this, I decided to add a few technical notes with the photographs in this issue. The Nikon D700 is a great camera and allows you to manually change the settings at the touch of a button or twist of a wheel. Even when you are in a shoot with the camera held up to your face, you can alter the settings extremely quickly. The eye can not only see the subject through the viewfinder but also every setting manually entered, this can be seen through the view finder in the form of digital figures, when you change the settings you will see the figures change immediately in front of your eyes, a bit like wearing a pair of simulator googles, for example: the subject appears dark when you check the shot on your display screen, you see in the viewfinder that your ISO is set to 4500, a twist of the dial wheel and watch it increase, you may now be up the ISO 6400 take the shot and have another look at the picture on the display screen, happy? Maybe not, everything was bright and blurred! Reduce the ISO slightly, increase the shutter speed and re-take the shot, 16 | The LOOP

10cc Graham Gouldman Settings: f/2.8, 1/250 Sec, ISO 3200, focal length of 80mm
The subjects at music concerts are continuously on the move so having the ability to pre-set minimums and maximums can help you out. For example the 1/250 Sec minimum shutter speed I had set ensured I would almost certainly capture a clear shot opposed to say 1/60 Sec where the subject may become blurred had I had that as a minimum
The Spice Girls Mel C Settings: f/2.8, 1/500 Sec, ISO 4500, focal length of 200mm
Quite an energetic artist Mel C, running about, jumping from left to right, constantly turning, twisting and bending. You will notice I compensated the movements and mitigated the blur by increasing the shutter speed to 1/500 Sec.
Settings: f/2.8, 1/500 Sec, ISO 6400, focal length of 80mm
The next shot of Mel C was interesting, not only did the settings freeze her in mid walk (or shall we say strut!) you will see the drummer’s stick upright and frozen in time, the shutter speed is the king here in terms of ensuring you get that clean shot, all artists here are moving about considerably and yet the picture looks like they are not moving at all.
The youngest band to play The Isle of Wight Festival 2015 The Bobbs (aged 11 yrs) Sometimes you get the opportunity to see an up and coming band, now at 11 years old these guys were energetic and didn’t make life easy for the photographer, yet their presence was well received by the audience and a great start to the show. It was great to be up on the balcony when the band were in rehearsals and capturing them all together looking at the camera was a great moment.
Meatloaf singer Patti Russo Settings: picture one, f/4, 1/250 Sec, ISO 6400, focal length of 200mm, picture two f/5.6, 1/250 Sec, ISO6400, focal length 110mm
The super famous Patti Russo graced many a stage with Meatloaf for a number of years and didn’t fail to impress at The Brook. Getting the shots you want can sometimes be a game of patience, a certain pose may happen only once and being on your guard looking through the lens can sometimes feel like an eternity waiting to press the shutter button. There’s no point reeling off twenty shots just on the off chance you happen to capture something special, be patient and let the subject come to you!
Why do I do this for hobby? Because now and again you capture something that makes it all worthwhile! Mel C (Below) Settings: f/5.6, 1/500 Sec, ISO6400, focal length 80mm

Holly Hill Leisure Centre right on track If you regularly drive along Barnes Lane in Sarisbury you may have noticed the presence of a large crane and a new building being constructed. This will be the new Holly Hill Leisure Centre which will open to the public in summer 2016.
What’s happened so far? The structure of the £9m Leisure Centre is nearing completion. The steel frame has been erected, the flat roof above the dance studio is in place and the curved roof and the pool hall will be finished by the end of February. Following this, the work to complete the interior of the building will get underway with the electrical systems, pool filtration systems and internal partitioning being installed. The swimming pool tanks are also now complete, although it did temporarily resemble a Lido as they were tested for leaks!
What next? Once the main contractor has completed their works, the building will be handed over to Everyone Active, who will operate the Leisure Centre. Everyone Active will install the fitness related items such as the gym equipment and land markers and the starting blocks for the main swimming pool.
A brand new children’s play area and multi-use games area (MUGA) will also be installed once the Leisure Centre is complete. The MUGA will be suitable for a range of ages and abilities and will provide a space for sports such as football, basketball and netball. Facilities will include:
Not just a leisure centre
• • • • • •
Two new football pitches for junior use will be provided next to the Leisure Centre and these will be available to use from September 2016.
For more information on the plans for the leisure centre, and to watch a video of the construction process, visit www.fareham.gov.uk/leisurecentre
All those involved are working really hard and the building work is on target to be completed as planned. The Leisure Centre is scheduled to open in summer 2016. We look forward to seeing you there!

Finance & Legal Sevices Taxation of property and rental income
TAX
Looking for help and support?
As many people find it difficult to raise a mortgage they are forced to rent somewhere to live. This increase in potential tenants has been matched by people who have turned to the property market in an effort to improve on the low returns on their bank accounts. In the excitement and stress of acquiring property and finding tenants it is easy to overlook the fact that if you receive income from land and property in the UK you need to tell HMRC. The only exception is income of less than £4,250 from a lodger in your own home. You have until 5 October following the end of the tax year (5 April) in which you first received the income, to tell HMRC. For example, if you rent out a property you own on 1 March 2016, you need to tell HMRC by 5 October 2016. If you do not do this, you may be charged a penalty. It is best to tell HMRC as soon as possible after you start, as this will give you more time to consider record keeping, saving up for any tax bill, and how you are going to submit your tax return. You should inform HMRC of your property income no matter whether you are making a profit or a loss from the property. HMRC may ask you to complete a tax return, but if the rental profit is low and you are an employee, you may be able to pay tax through PAYE instead. HMRC let property campaign HMRC is running a ‘campaign’ about let property which provides an opportunity to disclose taxable income to HMRC on better terms than those available under an HMRC enquiry. You may be unaware that the income you have from property is taxable and the following are situations where this may arise,• Changes in relationships – if you move in with someone and rent out the home you previously lived in. • Homes occupied by relatives –a house owned by you and lived in by your son or daughter who contributes to its upkeep. Money you received from this property may be taxable. Remember that for married couples or civil partners, there are special rules for jointly held property, which mean that income is usually deemed to be split 50:50 – you cannot simply allocate the income to the partner with the lowest rate of tax. • Inherited property – income you receive from a property you have inherited is taxable • Property abroad – if you are resident in the UK you are taxable on your worldwide income. This means that if you let out your home abroad while you moved to the UK to find work, income from your home abroad may be taxable in the UK • Renting a house while you work away from home – you may have been unable to sell your home when taking a job in a different part of the UK. As a result, you may have decided to rent a house close to your new job, and rent out your home. Even if the rent you receive is matched by the rent you pay, you still have taxable rental income • Mistakes about the ‘rent-a-room’ scheme – the rent-a-room scheme exempts from tax the first £4,250 of income from letting a room in your home to a lodger. If income from lodgers in your home is more than£4,250 in total, (about £83 a week), you are likely to have a tax liability. In addition, rent-a-room does not cover renting the whole of your house. 22 | The LOOP

If HMRC finds you before you have voluntarily made a disclosure you are likely to face higher penalties. You may need to take professional advice first to ensure that you fully understand the position and make an accurate and full disclosure. Making a disclosure is a two stage process. Initially you will need to notify HMRC – and then follow this up with a full disclosure and payment within three months of HMRC’s acknowledgement of your notification. Partners Prepare for New Year Mediations Two senior legal specialists who lead the family law team at Eric Robinson Solicitors are preparing for a busy few months as qualified Mediators.
Finance & Legal Sevices
Partners of the firm, Vicki Rawlins and Beverley Pym, are preparing to facilitate meetings that allow couples ending their relationship to resolve all matters relating to finance, property and care of any children. “Mediation is a private and confidential dispute resolution process in which an independent, neutral person, the ‘Mediator’, is appointed to support both parties in reaching an amicable settlement before there is a need to spend further time and often a great deal of money in Court,” explains Vicki. “It is a process which is focused on each individual and their futures by providing a forum to calmly explore the motivations and agendas of each party and examine a range of potential solutions for a mutually acceptable, lasting agreement.” Mediation involves not only joint meetings attended by the mediator and both parties, but also private meetings between the mediator and the individual parties alone to help avoid the raw emotion that is inevitable in a lot of initial face-to-face meetings. “As Mediators, we have been trained to stay neutral and facilitate,” says Beverley. “We make sure everyone has the opportunity to speak and we don’t take sides. We can provide broad based legal information in a meeting, but cannot give specific advice to any party, which is why both parties are encouraged to seek independent legal advice throughout the mediation process. “At the moment, Mediation is advised or recommended as a solution as it saves the expense of both running and attending court.”

Volunteers brave the winter weather to tidy Hook-withWarsash’s ‘Environmental Area’ Keen volunteers braved the winter weather to help tidy the environmental area at Hook-with-Warsash C of E Academy. All the budding helpers were kept busy by cutting back trees, clearing paths and trimming hedges.
The environmental area at the school has a pond, willow tunnel, sensory garden and woodland. The area allows pupils at the school to study pond life and compare different habitats within the school grounds. The garden is maintained by volunteers including parents, pupils, teachers and even grandparents. The school allows the local community to use the area and it is regularly visited by local pre-schools and other groups such as brownies and cubs. Pupils at the school enjoy the chance for welly walks in the grounds, during which they spend time exploring the area and learning in the outdoors, whatever the weather.
Hook-with-Warsash C of E Academy would like to thank all the helpers who came on the day and gave up part of their weekend to make a big difference to the school. They would also like to thank the school’s dedicated PTFA who provided delicious homemade food to keep the volunteers refreshed. If you are part of a local group and would like to use the area please feel free to contact the school on 01489 572393.

Hamble Conservation Volunteers Hamble Common is 55 acres of coastal heath owned and managed by Eastleigh Borough Council and assigned Special Scientific Interest because of its wide range of habitats. It is the main focus for the Hamble Conservation Volunteers and for those who have not heard of the Common before, it is a downward pointing triangular shaped area bounded by Southampton Water and the River Hamble.
The Creek
However, this interesting and diverse environment is only seminatural being the product of thousands of years of grazing and the removal of turf and scrub for fuel. The disappearance of these traditional activities means that without suitable intervention our Common would revert to scrub land or dense woodland with the loss of many of our plants and wildlife and that is where we come in. We are the Hamble Conservation Volunteers, a group of local enthusiasts committed to preserving the habitat and amenity of Hamble Common for the benefit of the community. We have been working with Eastleigh Borough Council for the past six years providing support for a variety of activities. In essence Eastleigh BC form the strategy and provide the expertise and we assist with those tasks that would be prohibitively costly were they to be carried out commercially.
Scrub Clearance Maintaining the Common without recourse to fire or extensive grazing is a challenge. To the uninitiated the task must appear relatively simple, with either a mechanized cutter or hand held strimmers cut back the growth and remove the debris. Sadly it is not that simple. We need to target specific plants such as Silver Birch leaving the other plants intact and if we were to cut down the saplings leaving the roots in place they would be back with alarming vigour next season. So the saplings must be cut down by hand and the remaining roots treated individually. By following the way marked trail the visitor can discover heathland, woodland, meadow, salt-marsh, mudflats and a shingle beach. Coastal heathland is now very rare in Hampshire, heather and purple moor-grass cover much of the Common with occasional patches of gorse providing ideal nest sites for stonechats and linnets. At low tide you may see wading birds such as oystercatchers, turnstones and ringed plovers feeding on shellfish and worms from the mud. Brent geese spend the winter here before returning to the Arctic to breed. Redshanks and herons can often be seen on the mudflats of the creek. At high tide birds rest on the surrounding salt-marshes which are covered in sea lavender. The earliest evidence of humans on the Common is the ditch and bank running right across the site that is thought to have protected an iron-age settlement. Since Tudor times the Common has been used to help protect Southampton Water. In 1543, King Henry Vlll had St. Andrew’s Castle built here, one of several sited along the Solent to defend against French invasion. All that remains today are a few foundation stones exposed at low tide. To help protect Southampton and the nearby oil terminals during World War 2 an anti-aircraft gun was sited near Hamble Point and a similar Bofors gun is on display to indicate the site’s defensive importance in times past. Today the common is much quieter, and an ideal place to walk and relax. 26 | The LOOP

Scrub clearance
Repairs Hamble Conservation Volunteers carry out a wide range of repairs around the Common. The majority of these are concerned with keeping the paths functional maintaining access. For example the winter storms a couple of years ago destroyed a large section of the coastal path and it was a major task to rebuild a replacement further inland. A working party of volunteers spent days clearing the path of gorse and bracken and laying over 40 tons of gravel sand mix in places which were boggy under foot. We could not have achieved this without the support of a large team from local company Qioptiq.

Beach Cleans It is an unfortunate fact of life that not everyone respects our environment, even those who use the Common and its beaches on a regular basis, so there is a continuing need to sweep the beaches for litter. Most of the litter is unsightly but a significant proportion is hazardous to wild life, domestic animals and us. We carry out litter sweeps on two Mondays every month with the occasional special ‘blitz’ if there is additional support. The current record for a day is 28 bags of rubbish achieved by a solid turnout of regular volunteers bolstered by a large number of staff from NICE Systems UK based in Hedge End.

Bird Boxes We are fortunate in having a large variety of thriving song birds on the Common. We believe that this is in part due to the provision of bird boxes that protect our birds during the nesting season from predators such as grey squirrels, magpies and domestic cats. We have sited 24 boxes throughout the area which are checked at the end of the season to establish whether they have been used and, if so, the breed of bird making use of them.
Can you help? Most of our tasks are manually intensive and there is no substitute for numbers. The tasks may appear arduous but there are roles for almost all agility levels. We appreciate that many people will have other commitments and may be only able to help infrequently but all projects are preceded by briefings that assume no prior experience. It may be small in size, but The Gregg School has proved it can match the “big boys” when it comes to sporting success. The independent School, which has a roll of 300 girls and boys aged 11-16, was one of three Finalists in the “Outstanding Achievement in Sport” category at the Independent Schools’ Association (ISA) National Awards for 2015. The ISA, which represents 340 of the best independent schools in the country, were impressed not only with The Gregg School’s very impressive list of local, regional and national sporting achievements in both individual and team events, but also the School’s inclusive approach to sports, which pays dividends not just for the students who are aware of their interest/skill in a particular sporting discipline, but for those students who, given a more selective environment, would not necessarily have discovered a hidden talent or enjoyment of a new interest. The Gregg prides itself on its outstanding pastoral support, and, recognising the demands and stresses that competing at high level place on young people, created its Elite Sports Programme in 2013. Participants range from GB standard sailors to nationallyranked athletes, County and London Irish Rugby players to members of the GB Taekwondo squad. Students on the Programme are mentored by PE staff, who offer advice on sports nutritional and training strategies, speakers are invited into School once a term to motivate and inspire the young sportsmen and women, and the School is able to create bespoke homework timetables alleviate some of the stresses caused by the students’ rigorous training commitments. Andark Aquanauts – Totally Fun! Andark runs a programme of SCUBA diving training for youngsters aged 8 to 12 years of age. 6 consecutive sessions in the Andark indoor heated pool on Saturday afternoons from 3.45pm to 4.45pm. Price is £18 per session but if you book all 6 together the total cost is £96.00 per person. The children receive an Aquanauts certificate at the end of the 6 sessions. After the 6 sessions have been completed, the children can progress to Master Aquanauts where they enhance their skills with “aquamissions” in the form of underwater navigation, photography and night diving to name but a few. The cost is £18 per session and does not need to be taken consecutively.
The next Aquanauts course starts on 13 February 2016 – spaces are limited. Call Andark on 01489 581755 or email claire@andark.co.uk A great fun event with a view to gaining skills to undertake the PADI Junior Open Water course in the future.

Scuba Diving with Charlotte Burns I am a 14 years old scuba diver, and I have recently been made a global ambassador for ‘The Professional Association of Diving Instructors’ (PADI) in their PADI ‘AmbassaDiver’ programme, helping to inspire more young people and women to take the plunge and to try out the sport. I have been diving for four years and I have loved every minute of it. When I was just 10 years old, I was inspired to take up the sport by my brother, Will, who, during his teenage years trained at Andark, Dive Centre in Swanwick. Will had a picture on his bedroom wall of himself and Jean Michelle Cousteau, presenting him with an award from PADI for being the most qualified junior diver in the world. From the moment I was old enough to realise how significant the award was, all I wanted to do when I grew up was to surpass his impressive record. You might call it sibling rivalry, I guess. My first experiences of diving happened at Andark; I trained in their pool a few times a week, before moving to Vobster Quay where I did my open water diving course. Since completing of the course, I have become very familiar with the instructors at Andark and have completed a number of courses with them; they are always so friendly and professional and I think that they have been a real inspiration in helping me to progress through the qualifications. I continued to train and was very proud to become the youngest ever junior master scuba diver in the world, qualifying two days after my 12th birthday. Carl Yates the Chief Instructor at Andark lets me help out when I can with their ‘Aquanaughts’ children’s dive training on Saturday afternoons; its a dive training programme for 8 to 12yr olds, I also help out when I can with kids scuba parties at Andark. This experience is helping me get leadership skills and to see the training side of diving. Being able to work with instructors (not instructing but assisting) I hope will make me a safe instructor in the future.
before, and had gained a lot of experience over the past few years, there were not allowed to make an exception for me. After the dive was cancelled the Icelandic government invited me to Iceland, to help assist and inform a review of their current dive laws (they are the only country in the world with an age minimum of 17 years!). I went to Iceland and met with a government minister and his advisors and gave a presentation to them on my dive experiences, qualifications and my thoughts. Carl Yates and Mike Lindsell, both from Andark and who are professional divers, travelled with me to help answer any technical questions which I couldn’t answer. We hope that consideration will be given to the prospect of lowering the age. Even if the age restrictions were lowered to 14 years old, then I hope I can be the first to dive there! I’m doing my best to keep learning. I’ve completed 28 PADI courses and I’m getting as many different experiences as I can. I believe that you can never stop learning and, using the great resource of people (there are so many experienced divers out there happy to help young people like myself ), then nothing is out of the question.
Recently, I planned to make an educational documentary (to be used in schools) about tectonic plates. After months of planning, I decided to go to Iceland to dive in between the Silfra crack, capturing footage of the amazing waterscape. In the build up to the dive, I trained at the Andark lake behind their dive centre in Swanwick. The film was going to be made by Coventry University media students. After all the planning and having been given a waiver by the dive centre in Iceland to dive, it was later realised that the dive would be breaching an old law that states the minimum diving age in Iceland to be 17 years old. This prohibits not only diving in the Silfra crack but even scuba diving in swimming pools. Even though I had dived in conditions like it contactus@loopmagazine.net

The Best Sailors, the fastest boats watch the excitement and join the action: The Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series is a premier racing circuit that forms part of the 35th America’s Cup sailing programme. The series features the best sailors in the world competing on AC45F (45 foot foiling) catamarans. The circuit will travel to a number of locations around the world in 2015 and 2016. Portsmouth was the first event of the series with local heroes Land Rover Ben Ainslie Racing winning the event in front of their home crowd. They will be looking to defend their title in July 2016. The British America’s Cup challenger, Land Rover BAR has launched it’s latest testing boat – T2 – at their home in Portsmouth. This boat will continue and increase the momentum already developed with the initial launch of ‘T1’ last October. It’s the next stage in the relentless pursuit of technological excellence that will culminate in the design and build of the final race boat to challenge for the America’s Cup in 2017. · T2 is designed to drive forward a new era of British maritime design and technology
Andy Claughton; Land Rover BAR Chief Technology Officer and two times America’s Cup winner:
· The boat uses the latest technology from both the aerospace and automotive industries to create the marine equivalent of a fighter jet
“This is the most technologically advanced sailing boat I’ve ever been involved with. It’s the vital next step on our path to developing the boat that will challenge for the America’s Cup, containing some of the most innovative and powerful technology ever used in this competition.”
· T2 will fly on foils the size of a wakeboard, whilst lifting the weight of a fully occupied London taxi
Land Rover BAR will continue test sailing in the Solent throughout the winter ahead of the Portsmouth event in July.
T2 represents a significant step towards the team’s pursuit of power and speed; driving forward a new era of British maritime design and technology.
The America’s Cup World Series Portsmouth event in 2016 will deliver an incredible four days of world class sport and entertainment action, family friendly, fun filled and action packed. Portsmouth will offer spectacular views of AC45 (45 foot flying catamarans) racing from the shore and on water. Thrilling and exciting fleet racing with these impressive boats will be a spectacle not to be missed.
The design combines ideas and concepts previously only found in aerospace and automotive technologies, uniquely, T2 combines the raw power of carbon fibre hydrofoils and a wing sail with sophisticated electronic flight control systems. Ben Ainslie; Team Principal and Skipper, four times Olympic gold medallist and America’s Cup winner: “T2 is an extraordinary achievement; everyone on the design, engineering and shore teams have put everything they have got into this boat. Power is nothing without control, and there has been no compromise in the pursuit of both. All of the sailing team are grateful and privileged to get the opportunity to test fly this unique craft.”

Acting UP, a local drama class provider, has celebrated its first anniversary of providing affordable after-school classes in the local area. Formed in November 2014, by director Rosanna Sloan, Acting UP set out with a mission to provide high-quality drama classes at affordable prices, so local people could benefit from the many skills and experience drama could offer. The classes started with just 9 students at Hamble Village Memorial Hall. Since then Acting UP has blossomed into a thriving and busy not-for-profit organisation which teaches just over 100 children, teenagers and adults a week - in 3 locations, Hamble-leRice, Locks Heath and Gosport. Founder Rosanna Sloan commented: “It is a privilege to see people of all ages come each week to learn, enjoy themselves and reap the benefits that drama has to offer. We have received a huge amount of community support, for which I am truly thankful, and I look forward to continuing in my mission to deliver interesting, inspiring drama classes to help children, teenagers and adults grow in confidence, add to their skills and, just as important, to enjoy themselves in the process.” This term students in the Monday classes at Abshot Community Centre, and Wednesday’s classes at Hamble Village Memorial Hall, are working towards creating a short film, imagining a world where drama is banned. Acting UP is the education side of professional theatre company Unexpected Places, adding to the uniqueness of what Acting UP can offer. Students frequently benefit from additional free workshops and previews of Unexpected Places performances. Lessons at Acting UP are always tailored to the interests and abilities of each group, providing a truly personal, community focussed class. To find out more about Acting UP visit www.actinguphants.co.uk, email actingupinfo@gmail.com, or call 07519 754829. Classes run for 4+ years, including adult classes.

Eastleigh declared UK StreetScene champions for record 5th time The teams that keep the Borough of Eastleigh beautiful have been recognised in prestigious national awards – for a record fifth consecutive time. Eastleigh Borough Council’s Street Cleansing Service was declared ‘Best Overall Performer’ at the Association of Public Service Excellence (APSE) awards in Blackpool - a clean sweep since they first picked up the award in 2011. Meanwhile, the authority’s Parks, Open Spaces and Horticultural Services team was ‘highly commended’, having once again made the list of finalists in the ‘Best Overall Performer’ category. The Street Cleansing Service was also nominated for the ‘Most Improved Performer’ award by APSE, the organisation dedicated to promoting quality in the delivery of frontline services to local communities. This is the fifth consecutive year that Eastleigh’s StreetScene Services have been nominated for APSE awards in each of these categories - an unprecedented achievement in itself. The APSE awards are unique in that they are based on actual performance data which is assessed against a complex range of performance indicators, including cost, quality, workforce development and value-for-money. The data is independently verified for accuracy and integrity following an initial assessment.

The Street Cleansing Service won the ‘Best Overall Performer’ award in 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014, being judged the UK’s Best Street Cleansing Service in the process. No other council service in the country has won a category more than twice, in a competition that attracts submissions from more than 250 councils across the UK. Councillor David Airey, Eastleigh Borough Council’s Cabinet Member responsible for StreetScene, is delighted with the teams’ success. He said: “Being declared best overall performer nationally for the fifth year running is an amazing achievement. The continued success of the Council’s Street Cleansing Service and Parks and Horticulture Service in the APSE awards is a tribute to the hard work and dedication of team members and reflects the huge pride they take in keeping the whole of the Borough of Eastleigh a pleasant place to live and work.”

UK celebrates successful launch of astronaut Tim Peake Tim Peake has successfully launched into space, becoming the first Brit to undertake a long duration mission on the ISS. The launch was celebrated across the UK as millions of people watched the live feed and over 15,000 people gathered at launch events across the country to wave Tim on his way. Space Times UK attended the launch event at the London Science Museum with Blake Hopley (KJ, BSc, MSc) Conference Lead for UK Space LABS and UK Space Environments Association’s, based in Hampshire, Blake organised some of the 70+ activities and demonstrations for the public to get involved in at the museum with over 11 thousand school children on the day, inspiring a generation into STEM subjects and Human Space Flight. It was a tremendous occasion. And as the UK’s first British Astronaut for 25 years settles into his new station, we look back at his launch, how your children are able to get involved with Tim’s mission and the UK’s involvement with the International Space Station Tim has been and will be sharing his experiences of living and working in space on his Facebook and Twitter. Already some amazing photographs of his view from space – make sure to have a look!
Tim’s launch - the first of a British astronaut in over 20 years – took place on the 15th of December at 11:03:10 GMT from the Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. As is now standard with a Soyuz launch, Tim and his crewmates, Tim Kopra and Yuri Malenchenko reached their destination after just four orbits around our planet. Their spacecraft docked at 17:33 GMT and the hatch to their new home in space was opened at 19:58 GMT. They were welcomed aboard by Russian cosmonauts Mikhail Korniyenko and Sergey Volkov, and NASA astronaut Scott Kelly.
Mission Principia Tim’s six month mission, named Principia after Newton’s worldchanging text on physics, Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica, will see him carrying out unique science and inspiring young minds across the UK. As well as being a test subject for health research, Tim will be using the unique environment of space to run experiments for researchers from all over our planet, including trying to grow blood vessels and protein crystals, simulating atomic structures, charting areas in the brain as they adapt to stressful situations and using a furnace to melt and cool metal alloys as they float in mid-air. He will also be trying out new technologies for future human exploration missions and may perform a spacewalk (EVA).

The LOOP | 61
With the UK now investing in the ISS and microgravity research, a variety of UK experiments are planned to take place during Tim’s mission, from testing and controlling a robot in Stevenage from the interior of the ISS to monitoring intracranial fluid shifts during prolonged spaceflight.
Education and outreach Throughout the Principia mission the UK Space Agency will be running a £3 million programme of education and outreach activities, bringing the excitement of space to classrooms and venues across the country and encouraging interest in STEM subjects. From following Tim’s training regime to designing experiments that will run on the ISS, there are many ways UK students can join Tim on this adventure of a lifetime. Most of the school activities running alongside Tim’s mission have some element of science or technology in them, but they cover a range of inspiring, curriculum-linked activities, covering everything from computer coding, growing plants and science/ maths demonstrations to fitness, nutrition, art and design. UK and the ISS At the European Space Agency (ESA) Council of Ministers in November 2012, the UK committed funding for the first time to the European Life and Physical Sciences (ELIPS) programme and the ISS Utilisation programme: 16M€ was committed to ELIPS over a four year period, and 20M€ to the ISS as a ‘one-off’ contribution. This marked the first time the UK had been involved in human spaceflight, and the decision was based upon detailed business cases prepared by the UK Space Agency in consultation with scientific and industrial communities and other government bodies.
In the latest Ministerial (2014) the Agency again pledged money to the ISS. This money, £49.2 million, gives UK researchers continued access to the $100 billion ISS programme, allowing them to use the unique environment of space to carry out research and make important advances in areas such as materials science, additive manufacturing and medical/biological sciences. The money will also be invested in the demonstration of a UK-built communications terminal for the European module of the ISS, lunar research activities – preparing for the likely next destination after the ISS, and developing key flight hardware.

southeast Alaska’s natural history and marine wildlife. For the ‘Whale Watching & Wildlife Quest’ shore excursions, passengers board a water jetpowered catamaran specially designed for wildlife viewing. An onboard naturalist explains the habits and habitats of the wildlife in the waters of Juneau. These shore excursions are best taken in June and July as the Inside Passage near Juneau supports a very healthy humpback whale population during these months, and guests may also spot blue whales and orcas.
The main aspect of Discovery at Sea concerns the sea’s wildlife and its conservation. Many ‘Discovery at Sea’ cruise holidays feature themed tours offer families the chance to learn about and observe wildlife at sea. Guests can reserve Discovery Channel and Animal Planet shore excursions, which provide enriching and immersive animal or nature experiences – tours such as swimming with sting rays, playing with sea lions, dog sledging and more. The most popular shore excursions of this kind are the whale watching excursions on Princess Cruises’ Alaska cruises. These tours give passengers a unique opportunity to experience

On this whale-watching shore excursion, if guests do not see a whale, Princess Cruises will give a $100.00 cash refund when guests disembark the tour vessel. However this is far from likely as whales have been spotted on every one of these tours for the past fourteen years. Once whales are sighted, the captain will manoeuvre the boat to allow for exceptional viewing and photo opportunities. Passengers are also likely to see Steller sea lions, harbour seals, Dall’s porpoises, bald eagles, Sitka black tail deer and, occasionally, bears. (The shore excursions cost around $159.95 – this price is subject to change). Through the Discovery at Sea collaboration, Discovery Science Channel and Princess Cruises also offer ‘Stargazing at Sea’, taking guests on a cosmic voyage as they look to the star filled sky from the top deck of the ship. On this interactive guided tour, a stargazing specialist will teach guests how to find their bearings and identify the major constellations as well as hear the secrets of the stars and the folklore around them. Guests can also learn culinary skills through Princess Cruises and the Discovery brand with ‘Princess Culinary Academy’, which offers adults and kids alike to learn tips, tricks and techniques in bakery design with the best pastry chefs at sea. For kids and teens, there are a range of fun and engaging activities through the ‘Discovery Youth and Teens activities’ scheme. Kids can join the ‘Fun Lab by Discovery’ where Princess Cruises’ young explorers will partake in activities related to Animal Planet, including fun apps; arts and crafts; and creative animal-related activities such as Shark Week, a very popular amongst Discovery activity for the children. For Shark Week, children write a short story about sharks and then perform it in front of the green screen. Shark video is added to their performance and they take home their very own Shark Week movie! For the teens, Princess Cruises offers the ‘Curiosity Lab by Discovery’, where teens engage in science programmes and activities made popular by programmes such as MythBusters; get hands-on experience panning for gold in Gold Rush activities; and immerse themselves in a brand new Discovery ‘Green Screen Experience’. Plus with interactive games from Discovery Channel, they will have the chance to discover, create and express themselves while learning and having fun.

Community News Talented Sam builds bridges for his career
Hospice’s charity fundraising tops £19,000 Fundraising for The Rowans Hospice has now reached over £19,000 since their first Lockheed Martin UK and BAE Systems charity cricket match nine years ago. The ninth Steve Rowling Memorial Trophy cricket match took place in June this year, and since then more fundraising has taken place, including a raffle, resulting in a grand total of £2,750 being raised this year.
Sam Bridges, a 16-year-old rugby player from the Henry Cort Community College in Fareham, has signed for Aviva Premiership side London Irish. Sam only started playing rugby four years ago, at Trojans Rugby Club. Sam has been a member of the Hampshire rugby squad for 3 years and has worked his way up through the London Irish Academy: he will start on the Achieving Academic and Sporting Excellence (AASE) scheme in September. Over 40 boys trialled for 15 places and Sam will play and train with London Irish while he studies at St Paul’s 6th Form in Sunbury. The Advanced Level Apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence (AASE) is a sports performance programme. It provides a structured training and development route across a number of sports for talented young athletes (aged 16-19), who have a real chance of excelling in their sport, either by competing on the world stage, or securing a professional contract. The programme length varies depending on the sport but can be from 12 to 24 months. AASE alumni apprentices have achieved huge success in the sporting arena, including Olympic and Paralympic medals, Commonwealth medals and professional contracts. Past AASE athletes have included double Olympic Gold medallist swimmer Rebecca Adlington, Arsenal and England footballer Jack Wilshere, and Olympic medallist in taekwondo Sarah Stevenson, and Ladies European Tour golfer Rachel Jennings.
The annual match started in 2005 after the sad loss of former BAE Systems employee Steve Rowling to cancer. In his final days he was looked after by The Rowans Hospice. Steve worked at BAE’s Waterlooville site and played for the site cricket team for 15 years before he passed away in 2003.
Sam’s proud mother said: “I am so proud of Sam, he is a talented rugby player and I hope he achieves his dream of playing professionally in the future. Sam also hopes to be selected to represent London Irish at the Wellington festival at the end of March.”
Rowan Hospice’s Donor Relations Manager Ally Calver, said: “We are extremely grateful to both Lockheed Martin UK and BAE Systems for their continued support for The Rowans Hospice, raising vital income to provide services for people affected by life-limiting illnesses in Portsmouth and South East Hampshire.”
Garry Fearon, Curriculum Leader of PE, remarked: “Throughout Sam’s school career, Sam has excelled in all aspects of sport. He has broken all sprint records every year on Sports Day. It has been a real pleasure to teach him and I wish him every success in the future.”
This year’s match was a slightly one-sided affair with the Lockheed Martin side winning back the trophy in determined fashion after “loaning” it to BAE for only a single year.

Community News Eastleigh Tec Hub members create wearable interactive map for Agincourt project David Overton, Managing Director of SplashMaps, said: “The project has provided the ideal opportunity for us to consider how you attach data and information to a physical map, and it’s helped us with our product development. “Working on the project has been a lot of fun. We took the map to Bear Grylls’ survival race to test it out and ended up teaching them all about Agincourt, which was great. “It gave us a great opportunity to interact with different people in an exciting way.”
Members of Eastleigh’s Tec Hub have been commissioned to create an interactive map of Hampshire, which can be worn and provides users with historical context surrounding the battle of Agincourt. The interactive wearable map is being created by Marcus Pullen of Blue Donut Studios and David Overton of SplashMaps, as part of Eastleigh Borough Council Culture Unit’s Road To Agincourt project, in association with the national Agincourt600 charity. It will feature an augmented reality trail that will provide information at specific points in Hampshire that hold particular relevance to the battle of Agincourt, such as where Henry V discovered a plot to overthrow him (Portchester Castle), places he stayed during the build up to the invasion of France (Bishops Waltham, Titchfield, Winchester and Southampton), and the main harbour where he kept his flagship Grace Dieu (Hamble). Using the latest technology, areas on the map will “come to life” with a click of a button from a smartphone. Historical points will transform into animations before the wearer’s eyes, and tales from another age will be revealed by characters from the past. From Medieval ship building in Hamble to The Southampton Plot, the interactive map examines life and experiences at the time of Henry V and the legacy that remains in the region some 600 years later. The map itself is based on the John Speed map of Hampshire, and is printed on an all-weather fabric developed by SplashMaps, which is durable and can be easily washed and worn. Marcus Pullen is responsible for the design of the map, as well as implementing the technology which will bring the augmented reality trail to life. The technology works via an app which can be downloaded onto any smartphone or tablet, and then, when the user scans at a location which is featured on the map, a beacon will send videos and other interactive content to the user’s device. Marcus believes that integrating the augmented reality trail with a physically durable map is a winning formula. He said: “The interactive map is a brilliant idea; nobody has done an augmented reality trail like this. “The SplashMaps themselves are really good, and they have a lot of practical value: you can lay them on coffee tables, car bonnets, anywhere. “The interactive features give you plenty of historical context when you’re out and about.”

Victory Squadron revive centre for KIDS Recently a youth support charity, KIDS, received hands-on assistance from Victory Squadron personnel at HMS Collingwood to refresh an area in their Fareham centre. The Phase 2 sailors were tasked with redecorating the centre’s reception area with bold and bright stimulating colours, reflecting the atmosphere KIDS aims to provide for the children who visit. KIDS Assistant Administrator, Abigail Limburn-Green, said: “We are very happy to be supported by HMS Collingwood in this project; it brings the two organisations together and is a real show of community spirit. There have been many compliments from parents, staff, visitors and the little ones themselves on the reception’s new look.” The KIDS Centre in Fareham is a charity run programme providing child care involving education, leisure and support to children with disabilities, special learning needs or those who are classed as young carers to improve their quality of life and their future. VS Training Officer Lieutenant Samira Pashneh-Tala said of Collingwood’s involvement: “We wanted to provide our support to KIDS as we have the resources and we are part of the same community so it’s great to assist a local project. It gives some of the Phase 2 trainees the chance to be interactive; it’s very similar to activities they may be involved in when on deployment and visiting foreign ports.” contactus@loopmagazine.net

Dynamo gymnast Kelly Simm was a key member of the amazing team that achieved the first ever team medal by a Great Britain Women’s Gymnasts team. Kelly splits her training between the National Centre and the Dynamo gymnastics facility, based in Hamble, which enables her to train in a top class facility and reach the high standard required to achieve World Medals. Dynamo Coach Debbie Richardson said: “We have been moving up the ranks again and enjoying the participation of hundreds of children all benefitting from the fantastic facilities at the club. Since the extension in 2012, the number of medals and trophies has rocketed. The club are supported by Eastleigh Borough Council and without their support and expertise the borough would not be able to offer such opportunities for the local children, together we are a winning team.” She added: “The team at Dynamo have enjoyed sharing the preparations preceding Kelly’s selection for the Team and will be celebrating when Kelly and her coaches return to the Hamble club.” In 2012, the Council worked with Dynamo to secure £220,000 from British Gymnastics, and £157,000 from Eastleigh Borough Council to extend the facility. Dynamo School of Gymnastics is a club for everyone and as well as elite development, they work closely with local schools, pre-school and recreational gymnasts and also supporting and developing local coaches and volunteers. The new extension allowed for more pre-school gymnastics work and school sessions to take place in the daytime and even more gymnastics in the evenings for all levels to train simultaneously. The two-storey extension includes a viewing gallery, extended vault run-off area and a dedicated hall for pre-school children. 70 | The LOOP

Locks Heath CC is starting its pre-season senior nets on Wednesday 3 February, starting at 7pm at the Ageas Bowl, and is always welcoming new recruits to the club. Club chairman Mark Acaster said: “With our junior section continuing to grow and receiving such excellent coaching in both the summer and winter, we realised that the time was right to grow our adult section. “Cricket is a great social activity and we’ve got the set up to involve the whole family.” With four teams in the Hampshire Cricket League, a Sunday side, a midweek T20 team, and five colts teams for boys and girls aged between eight and 15, Locks Heath CC has something to offer anybody looking to get involved.
Mission successful for Naval Base Last month HMS Collingwood personnel contributed to Mission Christmas, a gift appeal set up by Wave 105 FM to benefit local underprivileged children. Julie Reynolds of Interserve, one of the establishment’s Mission Christmas ambassadors and organisers, said: “We’ve had a great response to the appeal around Collingwood; we will definitely be doing this again next year!” Donations ranged from cuddly toys to fragrance gift sets to suit the broad age range. Gifts have come from various departments and individuals, including Unit Personnel Office Supervisor Chris Hayward, who generously donated his bingo winnings to the cause. The Interserve team are continuing to collect gifts until 8 December - asking that you buy one extra present this year, which will then be given to disadvantaged children locally to make their Christmas morning special. They are looking for new and unwrapped gifts suitable for children and young people aged 0-18 years.
“Normally at these events she would concentrate on the 50m, 100, and 200m Backstroke but for Sheffield she also entered the 100m, 200m and 400m Individual Medley – one of the toughest of the swimming events. Age-for-age, year-for-year she is probably achieving some of her best results ever. “Jo is a great example to all at the Club and of all the swimmers he has coached she comes highly up the list of those that ‘just get on and the Hard Metres’.” Tony Corben, who also recently returned to swimming with Fareham Nomads, had a good weekend competing in just four events but swam the fastest times he has achieved in many years. Claire Tagg, another ex-age group swimmer with the Club, also set good marks for the 100m Ind Med 1.24.65 15th and 200m Breast 3.15.16 6th. Stewart added: “This meet was being used to see if she would compete in the European Masters in 2016; these times definitely indicate that she will. Hopefully all three of these will be joined by many more from the Club.”

Directed by Eclipse Theatre’s Dawn Walton, this intense family drama, written on the cusp of the civil rights era, sees the Younger family await the arrival of a cheque for a life changing $10,000. Driven to conflict as they encounter issues of inequality, housing and lack of opportunity that continue to resonate today, the play acts as a stark warning to anyone who measures happiness and personal worth in capital gain. This brand new production will star Ashley Zhangazha as Walter, in one of the great roles of American theatre. Widely regarded as one to watch following performances in Henry V for the Michael Grandage Company and alongside Lenny Henry in Fences in the West End, Ashley won the 2013 Ian Charleson Award for his performance in Macbeth at the Sheffield Crucible. He will be joined by Llewella Gideon as Mama, whose recent theatre includes Play Mas at the Orange Tree and Birthday (with Stephen Mangan) at the Royal Court, but also well-known to audiences for her many roles in TV comedies including Nighty Night, Absolutely Fabulous and The Real McCoy. Following its debut on Broadway in 1959, Lorraine Hansberry adapted her play into a critically-acclaimed film starring Sidney Poitier as Walter. Testament to its continuing power and relevance, A Raisin in the Sun has been revived numerous times in the intervening years and Walter has been portrayed on stage by actors including Denzel Washington and Danny Glover. Eclipse Artistic Director Dawn Walton said: “A Raisin in the Sun is the type of play I love - one with a domestic setting, universal themes and big emotions. Lorraine Hansberry was a visionary and a playwright I always introduce writers to - most recently our ‘Revolution Mix’ writers. Like all great playwrights Hansberry allows her characters to speak the truth in a way that transcends time and place. I am really excited to work with Ashley and Llewella on this exceptional play.” For more information visit www.nuffieldtheatre.co.uk or call 023 8067 1771.
Nuffield announces upcoming 2016 Spring/Summer season Following his successful directorial debut at Nuffield, Southampton, of The Glass Menagerie, Nuffield’s Director Sam Hodges, announces the upcoming spring/summer 2016 season. The new season will feature two new Nuffield co-productions, The Massive Tragedy of Madame Bovary! and Noises Off, alongside six visiting productions by nationally and internationally renowned companies.
What’s On Waterloo comes to the King’s Theatre
Sam Hodges, Nuffield Director said: “We are especially thrilled to present two new Nuffield productions this season: an exhilarating new adaptation of Madame Bovary and the legendary comedy Noises Off. We are really looking forward to our 2016 season, it promises a full programme of bold, funny, classic and stylish theatre, and welcomes some of the most exciting theatre companies from across the UK to join us.” The season begins with the Massive Tragedy of Madame Bovary!, a collaboration between Nuffield, Peepolykus, Liverpool Everyman & Playhouse, Bristol Old Vic and Royal & Derngate, Northampton. Gustave Flaubert’s seminal 19th century novel has been lovingly derailed by John Nicholson and Javier Marzan of Peepolykus and will be directed by Liverpool Everyman & Playhouse’s Artistic Director Gemma Bodinetz. A bijoux cast of just five - with a fair amount of doubling – will create an absurd take on the traditional tale. In June, Nuffield, alongside Nottingham Playhouse and Northern Stage, will mount our production of Noises Off, the multi-awardwinning comedy by Michael Frayn. This riotous comedy serves up an irresistible glimpse into the onstage and backstage antics of a touring company as they hurtle towards a disastrous first night. It will be directed by Nuffield’s Associate Director Blanche McIntyre (The Oresteia, HOME; As You Like It, Shakespeare’s Globe; Tonight at 8:30, Nuffield). In addition to Nuffield’s co-productions, Nuffield’s Youth Theatre will present two productions in spring/summer 2016. Evan Placey’s Girls Like That in January, and in late March, a new modern adaptation of The Odyssey. The rest of Nuffield’s season features a host of visiting companies who will present a collection of classics and popular titles retold. In February, Curve Leicester and Rose Theatre Kingston will bring their production of the wicked Roald Dahl story The Witches, followed by an Eclipse Theatre Company, Sheffield Theatres, and Belgrade Theatre Coventry co-production of the American classic A Raisin in the Sun, a ferocious portrayal of working class life on the cusp of the American civil rights era. In April, Nuffield will welcome Filter’s explosive take on William Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night followed by Get Carter, Northern Stage’s dark and stylish new adaptation of the classic Newcastlenoir thriller. In May, Nuffield hosts the farewell tour of the award winning West End hit The 39 Steps. Alfred Hitchcock’s spy thriller is brilliantly and hilariously recreated for the stage, with four actors playing 139 roles in 100 minutes of fast-paced fun and thrilling action. The Flying Lovers of Vitebsk will bring the spring/summer season to a close in July. This Kneehigh and Bristol Old Vic co-production, written by Daniel Jamieson, traces a young couple as they navigate Pogroms, the Russian Revolution, and each other. This production marks the Emma Rice’s final direction for Kneehigh. Tickets for the new season will be on sale from Thursday 12 November. For more information visit www.nuffieldtheatre.co.uk or call 023 8067 1771.
