Shrubs that Sparkle in Spring! “Oh to be in England now that spring is here!” The poet Robert Browning certainly knew what he was talking about when he wrote these few immortal words. There is nothing quite like a warm sunny spring day to suddenly bring our gardens back to life. The drab days of winter disappear in an instance as the abundance of spring flowering shrubs burst into a kaleidoscope of yellows, reds, pink and white. Spring is the season that probably inspires us the most and treating ourselves to some bright spring shrubs is just the tonic and motivation we need to get back into the great outdoors. One of the earliest flowering shrubs is the flowering or ornamental currant Ribes. From it stark bare branches little pinnacles of delicate pink flowers appear before the leaf. It is quick growing and tolerates most aspects. The Forsythia, or if you prefer its rather charming common name, Golden Bells, is another early spring shrub with its wonderful clusters of the brightest yellow flowers. Another popular early spring shrub is the Spirea, especially the variety ‘Bridal Wreath’, which bears clouds of tiny white flowers that appear after the lime coloured leaves have burst their buds. Be careful not to mix up the spring and summer varieties, with the general rule of thumb being the spring shrubs are white and the summer shrubs pink. One little tip for spring flowering shrubs, if you need to do any pruning this has to be done as soon after flowering as possible to ensure the shrub has plenty of time to grow, as flowering the following spring is on the new growth. Air School Trainees Help Revitalise Facilities at Local School Air Engineering Technicians (AETs) from the Defence College of Technical Training’s Royal Naval Air Engineering and Survival Equipment School (RNAESS), HMS Sultan, recently helped out at a special needs school in Fareham.

helps prepare us for life on board and I am really enjoying the course. I think I am even more eager to do well now, than when I passed out of HMS Raleigh. “One of the jobs that we undertook at the School involved using a pressure washer to get some of the moss removed from the playground. Although this might not sound that interesting, we hope that it made the playground that bit safer and it’s rewarding to know that we have made the facility more accessible to the children. “It’s great to be able to help out where there is a real need. It was really sad to hear what the school has been through in recent times. It gives you a really warm feeling to know that you can help make a difference.”

St. Francis School hit the news headlines in November last year as it came under a series of attacks by vandals. With over £15,000 worth of damage caused, it became necessary for it to be closed temporarily. Thanks to the generosity of the local community, through a series of fundraisers, the School have been able to repair damaged facilities. Several improvements to facilities have followed, with the School benefitting from a number of different donations ranging from a CCTV system, to a morale boosting visit for students to attend the Panto at the Kings Theatre in Southsea. With the School returning to normality, the AETs from HMS Sultan spent several days on a number of different maintenance tasks aimed at further enhancing the pupil’s experience. Painting, cleaning and gardening were among the many activities, and additionally the trainees were able to build a new shed within the School’s gardens. Among the team of trainees involved was AET Matthew Parker, 21, who, after completing his A Levels, spent a short period working in retail before joining the Royal Navy. He was really excited about supporting the School while completing his training. He said “Joining the military is something I always wanted to do. I am mechanically minded and have also been interested in aircraft from an early age, so this seemed to be an ideal job. So far it’s been absolutely brilliant and I couldn’t imagine doing anything else. Every day seems to have offered something different, which

Carol Marsh, School Business Manager said: ‘We had suffered a small amount of vandalism and graffiti before and during half term. After a report in the local newspapers, we had suffered extensive vandalism which included damaged roof tiles, smashed windows and skylights and graffiti which made the fabric of the building unsafe and we had to close the school for the pupils for 8 days.’ “Since then the community have been fantastic and rallied round. We have been overwhelmed with the response and in donations alone we have been given over £20,000. In addition we have received all sorts of gifts and support. “We are very grateful to the trainees from HMS Sultan for offering their support to the School, especially for their input towards revitalising our outdoor facilities. As we move further into spring the children will spend a lot more time outside and will really benefit from what has been achieved.”

Computer Know How! Internet Browsers Most of us are used to the likes of Internet Explorer and probably Google Chrome. You may also be aware of Microsoft’s new browser Microsoft Edge, which launched with the release of Windows 10. In this article, we shall take a look at a couple of the unsung heroes of the browser underworld:

And now for something completely different… If any of you have suffered at the hands of Windows 8’s diabolical (and almost non-existent) Start Menu, and uttered the famous words “Why did they change that???” then Classic Shell is here to help you out.

Firefox… www.mozilla.org A reliable and fast Internet browser that provides virus, popup and spyware protection in a simple and easy-to-use tabbed interface. Firefox is an open-source web browser which provides excellent browsing speed, rich suite of customization options to personalize your daily Internet sessions, clean navigation mode, as well as extensions provided by third-party developers for adding extra functions. Firefox bundles features that include spell check, private browsing, download manager, tabbed layout, bookmark manager, popup blocker, and several others. Firefox also provides the sync feature, allowing users to have access to bookmarks, history and saved passwords across all of your devices. All in all, Firefox proves to be a reliable and fast web browser, which provides a clean and comfortable browsing experience, as well as plenty of customization options. With the aid of a few add-ons and themes, it can be tailored to the needs of day-to-day users, as well as developers.

Opera… www.opera.com Speed through the web… Opera has always been a pioneer in web browsing, developing loads of really useful features that are now commonplace across all browsers. Some of the new tricks under its hood include a really useful feature called Opera Turbo. Opera Turbo basically compresses requested web pages by up to 80%, making the pages load significantly quicker, ideal for those slow internet connections! Personalize your browser. Over 1,000 extensions make it easy to customize Opera. Download the extensions and themes you like from Opera’s add-ons catalogue to get the best browser experience with a personal touch. With the animated themes, you can even bring Opera’s start page to life. Keep it simple - Searching and navigating the web is a breeze, with Opera’s intuitive combined address and search bar. Pick one of the preinstalled search engines like Google, Yahoo! or Wikipedia, or add a custom search engine. You can also customize keyboard shortcuts and mouse gestures.

Classic Shell is free software that enhances the usability of Windows and gives you the freedom to use your computer in the way that you like. Have no fear the classic Start menu is here! Classic Shell gives us back one of the things we craved since Windows 8, the Start menu. Giving it back its customisability that even surpasses Windows 7 with multiple styles and colours. It also combines some of the features that made Windows 8 better, the quick access and pinning functions, allowing you to add commonly used files and folders to the Start menu, even adding in a nifty little search facility. Classic Shell is compatible with Windows 7, 8, 8.1 and 10. Don’t forget that you can always contact us for free impartial advice. Eric Robinson Leads the Property Race With a number of issues having a major impact on the industry in recent months, specialists at Eric Robinson Solicitors have been in high demand from people seeking advice and guidance on a variety of property deals. With the rise in stamp duty on investment properties coming into force, Eric Robinson Solicitors saw a marked increase in buy-to-let landlords wanting to complete property purchases before the start of the financial year. ‘It is hardly surprising that our clients have been grateful for efficient service in the past few months - the sense of urgency in property transactions for investors has been palpable.’ says Catherine Maxfield, Managing Partner. ‘In addition, property values that were zero-rated for stamp duty (property valued up to £125,000.00) will now incur 3% stamp duty for Buy-to-Let Landlords. ‘The other big issue that is motivating a lot of new clients is that of lease extensions,’ says Maxfield. ‘If the leasehold on a property has 80 years or less, it will usually be sold for a greatly reduced price. 70 years or less would see most mortgage lenders refuse potential buyers and this seems to be a growing situation in the Solent region. ‘Freeholders of blocks of flats find short leases attractive as they know the majority of people aren’t aware of this issue and extending them can be an extra way of making money.’ Maxfield is also intrigued by the ‘first time buyer’s ISA account’ which was introduced at the end of last year. ‘The government will pay a 25% bonus when funds saved in this type of account are used as a deposit for a property purchase. Recent reports say that 250,000 people took out an account within two months of its launch, so we shall see whether people are able to stick with this type of saving and take advantage of it in line with the government’s intentions.’

Though firms can charge their clients £50 for requesting funds under the scheme, Eric Robinson Solicitors has decided not to charge people who instruct them and subsequently have to make an application to obtain funds under the ISA scheme. ‘I see it as doing our bit for the industry,’ concludes Maxfield. ‘If we can all work together to get the property market moving from the bottom up, it will be of great relief and benefit to everyone involved.’ For more information or support on any property matter, call 023 8022 6891 or visit www.ericrobinson.co.uk

Scheme Means Churchyard will Remain Open for Burials A church is to extend the use of its churchyard with two new developments to serve its community. The churchyard at St. Mary’s Church, Warsash, is almost full after 145 years of continuous use. Its Parochial Church Council has now agreed that forthcoming burials can take place on old, unmarked graves that are more than 100 years old, and is awaiting final approval from the Diocese to permit this. This is not a new idea, as the current regulations allow for old graves to be used in this way. They have also agreed to provide a new Garden of Remembrance where ashes can be interred. This will be a landscaped area at the eastern end of the churchyard, where ashes can be buried. Both of these developments will allow those in the St. Mary’s parish to be buried, or for their ashes to be interred, in their local churchyard. It will also allow local residents to visit the graves and memorials of loved ones in the tranquil surroundings of the church grounds.

“Interment of ashes is actually much more common these days than burials, so we focussed first on this. Once there is no more space for ashes to be buried in specific plots, the idea is to provide a landscaped area where ashes can be interred. People’s names will be recorded in a Book of Remembrance kept on display in the church, which is open from 9am-5pm every day. “This is similar to the practice at many other churches, and the book will be opened each day at the current day of the year. Families can also visit by appointment to find the names of their loved ones. “A local man has also done a lot of research into our churchyard. As a result, we know there are a number of unmarked graves where it is impossible to identify who is buried in them. There is a centuries-old practice of re-using grave plots, and we plan to introduce this.

Churchwarden Roger Clear said: “One of the significant ways in which we serve our community is through the churchyard, where all who die in the parish have the right to be buried. This is unusual these days, as so many churchyards are full or closed to further burials.

“The current regulations allow such ‘over-burial’ for graves over 50 years old. But, given our village life and local long memories, we would only over-bury above graves over 100 years old, which are unmarked, with unknown remains. Any remains discovered when preparing graves would be reinterred with suitable dignity and prayers. With our current rate of burials, we believe this will allow us to continue to use the churchyard almost indefinitely.”

“Our PCC wanted to keep the churchyard available for as long as possible to the local community, so we can continue to provide a final resting place for loved ones in our parish.

If you have any queries or comments on this scheme, please contact the vicars or the churchwardens via enquiries@ stmarywarsash.org.uk.

St. Mary’s churchyard is the only one in the Western Wards of Fareham where new burials can take place, as the other churchyards in the area are all full.

UK Ice Swimming Championships head to Hampshire Andark Diving and Watersports played host to the very first UK Ice Swimming Championships at its watersports lake in Swanwick on Saturday 20th February. This new sport is not for the faint hearted and the rules, run under the auspices of the IISA (International Ice Swimming Association), require that swimmers take to water of 5°C or under wearing only a regular swimming costume, a pair of goggles and swim hat to stay warm!

As a new sport, with big aspirations to take part in the Winter Olympic, it’s great the Ice Swimming Championships 2016 were held in Hampshire, which is a first for the county and the UK. “Andark Lake is a new watersports facility which we had purpose built just under two years ago for a variety of activities. As well as diving and kayak training, we also have a lot of open water swimmers who now use the lake, as it offers a large, safe training ground, with first-class facilities onsite. I think having a hot shower and a café to sit down and warm up in was welcomed by all the swimmers, post event. We now wish all the qualifiers the very best for the World Championships in Germany.”

The elite ice swimmers braved the cold to race the ‘ice mile’ to qualify for a place in the world championships, which are taking place in Germany later on in the year. The hope is then to get the sport of ice swimming recognised as an Olympic sport in its own right and run in the Winter Olympics 2022. The racers all had to undergo strict fitness tests before competing to ensure they were capable of being in the water for such a prolonged length of time. Alongside the world championships, the general public were also invited on the Sunday and provided with the opportunity to ‘have a go’ at this new extreme sport. They were able to compete wearing a wet suit or go for the full ice swimming experience and just don a regular costume! With triathletes and open water swimmers regularly training at Andark there was a great turnout and perhaps some new converts to the sport! Managing director of Andark Lake, Andy Goddard explains: “We were really delighted to be hosting this event plus providing people with the exciting opportunity to actually give it a go. 20 | The LOOP

contactus@loopmagazine.net

The event was run with Hampshire Ice Swimming champion, Kate Steels-Fryatt who has been using the facilities at Andark to practice, for some time. “I’m thrilled that the ice swimming championships came to my home county and to Andark where I do so much of my swimming. Many of my swims take place in Russia where we have to break the ice to create lanes, so to be able to do this just down the road from where I live was great.” For further information on winners, qualifiers and images from the weekend visit www.andarklake.co.uk

Cardiology Service at Heathside Veterinary Surgery Heathside veterinary surgery in Locks Heath is pleased to welcome back David Sewell, veterinary surgeon and RCVS certificate holder in veterinary cardiology. David was at Heathside for 4 years (2009-2013), then spent 2 years working part-time as a cardiologist for a large 1st opinion and referral centre in Bristol. He is now back and looking forward to providing a cardiology service for the practice. The skills and services provided include performing and interpretation of blood pressure measurement, ECG’s, chest x-rays and echocardiography (ultrasound of the heart). Being able to provide this service will benefit clients who wish to avoid the additional travelling distance and costs associated with referral to a specialist. This will hopefully result in more patients with murmurs or arrhythmias being assessed for significant heart disease. Once assessed it may be necessary for some cases to be referred to a specialist for interventions such as placing artificial pacemakers or correcting congenital defects. In addition to cardiology David also enjoys performing other diagnostic services including abdominal ultrasound and endoscopy of the airways or gastrointestinal tract. His interests also include feline medicine, small mammal and exotic medicine and dentistry.

Push The Boat Out More than 65,000 people have discovered sailing through the RYA’s Push The Boat Out national ‘have-a-go’ festival since its launch in 2012. Now in its fifth year, a record number of clubs and centres nationwide will again welcome all-comers to get afloat from May 14-22. Following a hugely successful event in 2015 that saw more than 24,000 people visit 347 sailing providers across the UK, this year’s event is set to be the biggest yet. Once again, following its successful introduction last year, Push the Boat Out will run for nine days through May. This will allow more clubs than ever before to get involved by hosting open days and events to encourage people to give sailing a go. For clubs seeking to reach new audiences, Push the Boat Out offers a unique opportunity to take part in a nationwide campaign offering everybody the chance to get afloat. Tudor Sailing Club took part in Push the Boat Out for the first time in 2015, and Committee Member Hannah Barnes believes the event has helped reverse the declining membership trends seen at the club over the past few years. Hannah believes the publicity gained has helped the club, who sail in Langstone Harbour, become more noticeable within the wider community, as part of a long-term plan to develop the club’s facilities, equipment and services. “We’d been experiencing a slow downturn in membership, which was against the RYA trends, so we decided as a club to take decisive action to change this. We really wanted to put our sailing club out there more, in order to fill the gaps in the membership we had started to see. “We were keen to appeal to the local community and let them know we exist and we aren’t expensive.” Previously, Tudor Sailing Club had held their own open days, focussing on attracting more families to the club.

24 | The LOOP

contactus@loopmagazine.net

“When Push the Boat Out first started in 2013, it was a two-day event and unfortunately didn’t fit with our club calendar, so we adapted it and had it more as a family fun day. We encouraged people to bring another family who weren’t members. “In 2014, we continued in that vein and had a respectable turnout. “However, this year we really decided to out everything we could into making Push the Boat Out a big success at the club. “We had banners, flyers in supermarkets and a strong social media campaign. We really went for it and got news of it out as far as we could. We even had a few people come down who had heard about it on the local news the previous day.” As an entirely volunteer-run club, Hannah feels that the considerable efforts of club members before, during and after the event were crucial in making it a success. Tudor Sailing Club also teamed up with a local charity, which provided two keelboats, ensuring there were a range of activities and boats on offer for all those who attended. “The day itself was hugely successful. Everyone put effort in to make sure the clubhouse was presentable, the galley was staffed and everybody that wanted to go on the water, got on the water. “We had nearly a hundred people come, and 19 people sign up on the day with 13 confirmed as members there and then. Since the event, the new members have also bought in other friends and neighbours, who have come down to try out the sport and become hooked.” Hannah is looking forward to this year’s event, and believes it will prove an even bigger hit. “We are really looking forward to this year’s Push the Boat Out, and are excited to welcome even more members to the club.” For more information on clubs that are holding Push the Boat Out events in your area, visit www.rya.org.uk/go/ptbo. contactus@loopmagazine.net

The World’s Leading Annual Solo Yacht Race is Coming – 22nd to 26th June The world’s leading annual solo sailing race, the Solitaire du Figaro is coming to the Isle of Wight between the 22nd and 26th June, bringing an exciting five-day public event to Cowes as part of the Island’s colourful ‘Festival of the Sea’ celebrations.

An international event, the Solitaire du Figaro will bring not only a professional sailing race to the pontoons of Cowes Yacht Haven, but a bustling race village to Cowes Town. FREE and open from 22nd to 26th June, the Race Village will be fun for all the family whether messing about on the water is your thing or not. Mark McNeil, Deputy Mayor of Cowes and Chairman of ‘Destination Cowes’ –a key organisation behind the event – explained why hosting the Solitaire is important step forward for Cowes: “Portsmouth has had the America’s Cup, Southampton has had the Volvo Ocean Race – this is our chance to put Cowes back on the map as the UK and Europe’s sailing capital. A real spectacle of the sea and a showcase of top level sailing, the Solitaire will attract crowds from both the island and mainland to the Isle of Wight.” The Solitaire du Figaro will offer five days of fun family entertainment in Cowes, including food markets, a drinks bar, live music in the Race Village and try sailing for all on the Solent - courtesy of the official event charity United Kingdom Sailing Academy (UKSA). Alongside the live entertainment, there will be a host of interactive stands and activities to entertain the public. For the local community there will be the opportunity to showcase in the Race Village, add to the entertainment schedule and for local children, a successful education program focused on coastal conservation and the environment. Recognising this major event as an opportunity for increased tourism, international awareness and community involvement, Visit Isle of Wight are fully supportive of the Solitaire as Chief Executive David Thornton explained: “The forthcoming Solitaire du Figaro is a brand new and exciting event for the whole of the Isle of Wight and Cowes. We are delighted that the UK leg of the race coincides with the Island’s annual celebrations of our maritime lifestyle and heritage, ‘The Isle of Wight Festival of the Sea’, and we look forward to working with our partners in Cowes and our new friends in France to make this an exceptional celebration that everyone can enjoy and be a part of.”

A world-class sporting event with an international following, the 2016 Solitaire du Figaro spans 1425 miles between five European Host Venues – Deauville (France), Isle of Wight, Cowes (UK), Paimpol (France) and La Rochelle (France). Considered as the world championships of solo offshore racing, the Solitaire takes just over a month to complete and pushes competitors to the edge of human limitation – one man, one boat, 1500 miles, rough seas, harsh weather, no sleep…the list goes on.

Alongside the Island’s main tourism body, the businesses and organization forming the aforementioned ‘Destination Cowes’ are also key stakeholders in the event – Cowes Town Council, Cowes Business Association, Cowes Harbour Commission, Cowes Yacht Haven and Red Funnel. Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of the Isle of Wight, Major General Martin White will act as the Patron for the event, and looks forward to welcoming the weary Solitaire skippers to Cowes next June: “This event is not only a marvellous opportunity for Cowes, but also a chance for the whole Island to welcome international competitors and supporters to our shores. As a seafaring Island, we have much to offer both visitors and sailors alike and I very much hope the sailors will enjoy their stay with us.” Following the success of the last UK stopover in Torbay, the Isle of Wight would hope to see 20,000 visitors pass through the Solitaire du Figaro race village over five days. The Solitaire du Figaro had a hugely positive economic impact on Torbay in 2015, injecting roughly 1.8 million pounds into the seaside town. The Isle of Wight is one of four venues playing host to this major sporting event in 2016. Starting from Deauville, a grand French town twinned with Cowes on the 19th June, the Solitaire competitors are expected to dock into in Cowes Yacht Haven around the 22nd June after sailing 510 miles. The race will restart in the Solent on Sunday 26th June, a spectacle not to be missed from the water or the Parade. From Cowes, the Solitaire du Figaro fleet will race to Paimpol (France), and finish in La Rochelle (France) on the 7th of July. Space Times Gravitational waves herald new era of physics and astronomy Gravitational waves, predicted by Albert Einstein almost a century ago, have been detected for the first time.

Artist’s impression of LISA Pathfinder. Credit: ESA.

These mysterious ripples in space-time are thought to be caused by massive celestial events such as neutron stars, black holes or supernovae collisions.

LISA Pathfinder was expected to reach its operational orbit in midFebruary. After final checks, it will begin its six-month scientific mission as of the 1st of March.

The first clear gravitational wave signal was picked up last September by the LIGO/Virgo collaboration and the information was rapidly passed to astronomers, including teams in the UK, allowing them to join a world-wide hunt to identify the source of the mysterious waves.

The UK’s involvement in LISA Pathfinder’s technology demonstration payload and the operational phase of the mission is funded by the UK Space Agency and was formerly funded by the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC). Airbus Defence and Space is the prime contractor for the mission, having built the spacecraft, as well as being the LISA Test Package (LTP) architect, on behalf of ESA and the participating Member States. SciSys UK Ltd developed the satellite’s on-board software and UK scientists from the University of Birmingham, the University of Glasgow and Imperial College London designed and built elements of the innovative and complex LTP. STFC RAL Space was involved in several technology development projects in the early stages of the mission in 2001.

This exciting find, announced by the LIGO/Virgo collaboration, is also big news for scientists involved in Europe’s LISA (Laser Interferometer Space Antenna) Pathfinder mission - a UK-led spacecraft (launched in December 2015) to test new technologies needed to measure gravitational waves in space. LISA Pathfinder has some of the most precise and advanced technology ever launched into space. Professor Mike Cruise at the University of Birmingham said: “The announcement of the first detection of gravitational waves by the Advanced LIGO Team has opened a new era in astronomy which will require observations and measurements from both ground and space borne detectors. The successful launch in December of LISA Pathfinder, designed to pave the way for a future gravitational wave detector in space, is the next step in opening up our new window on the Universe”.

At the core of LISA Pathfinder is a pair of identical 46 mm gold– platinum cubes separated by 38 cm, which will be isolated from all external and internal forces acting on them except one: gravity. The mission will put these cubes in the purest free-fall ever produced in space and monitor their relative positions to astonishing precision, laying the foundations for gravitational wave observatories in space. contactus@loopmagazine.net

Rocket Science Grow your own space salad and join a huge national experiment run by the Royal Horticultural Society Campaign for School Gardening Grow your own space salad as part of a national space experiment! The UK Space Agency partnering with the Royal Horticultural Society in an innovative educational project that will give around half a million UK children the chance to become space biologists.

As part of Tim’s mission, 2kg of rocket seeds were sent to the International Space Station and have just returned to Earth so that thousands of UK schools can take part in a national science experiment to compare the seeds against seeds that have stayed on our planet. Participating schools will each receive two packets of 100 seeds to grow and compare and a collection of fun, inspiring curriculumlinked teaching resources and posters. Schools and other educational organisations can apply now for teaching resource packs containing the seeds. The packs will be sent out after the seeds return to Earth, which actually came back with NASA Astronaut Scott Kelly after his epic #YearInSpace Mission. When will Tim Peake come back? Peake is scheduled to return on 5 June 2016 but he’s already planning his next trip. Recently answering a students question about where he would like to go next, he said,

Unfortunately for Tim, there are no plans to send ESA astronauts to Mars - yet. But Tim may get a good chance to fly to the Moon, where landings could happen in the late 2020s.

“I would like to go to Mars. I think it’s fascinating; it’s quite closely related to Earth in being one of the small, rocky planets that probably once had an atmosphere and once had oceans on it.”

Education Bridgemary School rated ‘Good’ by Ofsted, on its way to Outstanding Students, staff and governors are absolutely delighted after Bridgemary School was rated ‘Good’ by Ofsted following a visit on 3 & 4 February 2016.

Industry chefs and College students prepare five course seasonal dinner Last night, Andy Stephenson and Tom Pemberton, two professional industry chefs, joined Fareham College to share their expertise, experience and knowledge with Level 3 Catering students. The guest chefs and the budding cooks produced a five course seasonal menu for members of the public who filled the College’s Avenue 141 restaurant.

The Ofsted report judged the school as ‘Good’ in every single category and praised the leadership at the Academy stating: ‘The headteacher’s excellent leadership has led to rapid improvement in all aspects of the academy since the last inspection’.

Mrs Vicki White, Headteacher at Bridgemary School, commented: “We are delighted by the outcome of our recent Ofsted inspection. The Good rating is testament to the dedication, resilience and hard work of all the staff, and is recognition that we’re on our way to becoming the outstanding school that our wonderful students, their families and the community deserve.” The report also highlighted the schools strengths, including that: • Improving the quality of teaching has been at the centre of the academy’s work. Teaching is now consistently good • Pupils’ behaviour in lessons and around the academy is good • The academy’s work to promote pupils’ personal development and welfare is good • Teachers know their pupils well and carefully plan lessons to meet their needs • Parents are well informed about their children’s progress • Governance is good We are pleased that Ofsted have recognised that the ‘Trust have provided effective support and challenge for the academy over a sustained period of time’. Karen Roberts, CEO at TKAT, said: “Ofsted’s decision to move Bridgemary School from an ‘Inadequate’ to a ‘Good’ rating is a truly fantastic and thoroughly deserved result for the school. This judgement recognises the pace and hard work put in by the school’s leadership, students, parents and local community in driving progress and standards. We are proud to have them within the TKAT family and look forward to our continued work with them on their journey to ‘Outstanding’.” 32 | The LOOP

Tom Pemberton cofounded the Hereford Road restaurant off Westbourne Grove in London. He was previously Head Chef at the celebrated St. John Bread and Wine in Spitalfields, which is most notable for its use of offal and often neglected cuts of meat. Pemberton also trained under Fergus Henderson at the original St. John in St. John Street in Smithfields, and has cooked at the Chelsea Arts Club and the Anglesea Arms gastro pub in Hammersmith. Andy Stephenson, after gaining his qualifications at Portsmouth based Highbury College, has worked in various Michelin starred establishments based in locations such as London, Provence and the French Alps. He finally settled in Antibes on the French Riviera to work as a personal chef for one of the world’s richest men Adnan Khashoggi. Returning back to London, he worked in the Michelin starred Rue St. Jacque restaurant, then the AA hotel of the Year Woolley Grange in Wiltshire, before finally taking his first Head Chef position at the Angel Hotel in Midhurst, where he gained many accolades including three AA Rosettes for his unpretentious seasonal food. For the past 15 years Andy has been his own boss, successfully running his award winning small 24 cover restaurant Hallidays in West Sussex, as well as writing several cookery articles for local publications and magazines.

Education

Both chefs were extremely pleased to be collaborating with the College students. Andy Stephenson stated: “It’s the fact that when you are in the industry, you rarely have the opportunity to work with young people. Opportunities like this where chefs like us can pass on our knowledge and experience to help improve young people’s skills and confidence is a brilliant thing.” He added: “All the students have been extremely keen to learn. They were all here and ready before they needed to be. All clean and presentable and, more importantly, they used their initiative in the kitchen, asked questions and have taken everything in.” Tom Pemberton agreed: “Taking the time to work with the students here at Fareham College is really rewarding. We are able to inspire young people in this industry but it is also inspirational for us to see their enthusiasm. It’s a chance for the students to see new and different things.” James Clancy, Level 3 Catering student said: “It’s great when guest chefs come into the College. It’s a great opportunity to speak to them to find out their own experiences in the industry and it’s also a chance to learn some new and different techniques. They are both really adventurous with their cooking!” The guest chef collaboration led to Tom’s first visit and experience of the new campus at Fareham College. Tom commented: “It’s my first time here at the College, and compared to industry, I’m really impressed with the facilities here. It’s really well equipped and everything I have needed has been here. It’s a professional, clean industry-standard kitchen and the students have been incredible.”

Guests thoroughly enjoyed a fantastic locally sourced five course meal featuring delicious dishes such as grilled ox heart and seasonal shoots, Selsey crab Scotch egg and hairspring watercress, venison haunch and forced Yorkshire rhubarb. Blenheim Oak Auto Repairs Proudly Celebrating 21 Years in Business Hi I’m Mike Crawley, owner of Blenheim Oak Auto Repairs; our family run and owned business established in 1995 to provide a wide range of vehicle services for the local area. As a well experienced garage, we work hard to keep up to date with the latest vehicle technology whilst maintaining our expertise in general vehicle repairs and focus our efforts on customer care and satisfaction. Customers believe our work to be of a higher standard than most, as reflected in our Checkatrade feedback and our long term dedicated staff offer a personal and reliable service. We pride ourselves on being able to offer a complete service to our customers with an available Free local collection and delivery service to meet their personal requirements. Our services include M.O.T/repairs, vehicle servicing, welding, tyres/balancing, four wheel alignment, air conditioning, batteries, diagnostics, fault finding and electrical repairs. Our workshop is manned by our fully trained mechanics all having a vast experience with any make of vehicle. We offer a pre booked while you wait service in our VOSA approved fully equipped M.O.T station. We have fully trained air conditioning technicians and carry state of the art diagnostic equipment, enabling us to cope with all the sophisticated electronic systems on today’s modern vehicles.

From an early age I wanted to become a mechanic. I went to Southampton College for four years to study on a City and Guilds Motor Vehicle Technician course. I passed with credits and distinctions while working as an apprentice at Bristol Street Motors in Shirley. My next position was at New Park Garage in Locks Heath where I put all my training to full use, acquiring a greater range of vehicle knowledge. Later I was given the opportunity to move to Cheltenham with a Lancia Fiat franchise as their Workshop Foreman. I was soon promoted to Service Manager and then General Manager dealing with all three of their franchises. In 1992 I decided to move back to the Southampton area to start my own business. Having been based in Botley for the past 21 years, I have now built up a good local client base, many of whom have stayed loyal throughout the years. In 1999 I applied to the Ministry of Transport to become an M.O.T testing station which was very thorough and after a short wait we were approved as a registered Vehicle Testing Station. In 2007 we were nominated to become a Checkatrade company and at this point also decided to become a Limited Company. During the company’s growth there have been many challenges and I wish to thank so many of my clients who have stayed loyal with their support. We now look forward to the future and to welcoming new customers assuring them of our best and reasonably priced service.

It’s a ‘kinder’ Magic! Magicman restores damaged surfaces of all types. Imagine how you would feel if a worktop in your beautiful kitchen was spoilt by a large burn mark. Or if you’re the prized wooden floor in your sitting room suffered a deep gouge. Accidents will happen and sometimes the cost of rectifying can be substantial. However, there is a very affordable alternative. Magicman is an innovative service that specializes in repairing damage of all types to hard surfaces – wood, metal, uPVC, ceramic, stone, laminate, marble and even glass. The standard of finish makes the repair virtually impossible to detect. It’s as if the damage has disappeared, just like magic!

The Magicman service uses specialist resins, paints, lacquers and tools to create a repair that will be permanent, not just cosmetic. It means that damage to valuable fixtures and fittings can be rectified with minimal cost when compared to the expense of replacement. Chris explains “We have grown used to living in a throw away culture, where damaged or worn fixtures and fittings are simply replaced with new. In many cases that may be practical and affordable, but not always. If the damaged item is valuable or irreplaceable, or perhaps if replacing would involve costly disruption to surrounding décor or assets, repair is far more cost-effective”.

The Magicman service is now available in the Solent area, under the management of local independent operator, Chris Mitchell. His technical expertise is available to carry out repairs to damage on behalf of homeowners and businesses, involving the restoration of surfaces that have been scratched, chipped, dented, burnt, drilled or scuffed. Chris says “The scope of our repair capability is very wide. We can repair damage to virtually any substrate. Providing it is structurally sound I’m able to achieve a finish that will be exactly matched to the colour, pattern and finish of the existing surface. Customers are often extremely surprised about the quality of the work we do”.

Scared of Pins & Needles? Q&A with Vida Woods – a Traditional Acupuncturist – may change your mind…

Health & Beauty

What first led you to become a traditional acupuncturist? I first felt the benefits of traditional acupuncture in my early teens and have returned frequently to this ancient form of healing ever since. I was so overwhelmed by the positive effects of acupuncture on all levels of mind, body and spirit level that I felt the need to pass these benefits on to others. I waved goodbye to the corporate world of investments and followed my passion to become a fully qualified traditional acupuncturist. I’m keen to share my knowledge with you about traditional acupuncture as although it’s one of the most popular complementary therapies practised in the UK today, many people only discover it as a last resort despite widely recognised and well-evidenced health benefits.

What is traditional acupuncture? It’s an evidence based therapy of natural healing, offering a holistic approach to treatment that has been developed and refined over 2,000 years. Holistic means that your body, mind and spirit are all engaged, as the acupuncture re-establishes your energy balance along the meridians (pathways of energy that run through your body).

How can traditional acupuncture help you? Treatments are designed around you as an individual, with emphasis on identifying the root cause of a condition while also enhancing your general wellbeing. There are many ailments for which it can be effective, including: • Allergies • Anxiety • Asthma • Depression • Fertility (men/women) • Gynaecological issues • Headaches/Migraines • Irritable bowel syndrome • Osteoarthritis/Rheumatoid arthritis • Pain (such as musculoskeletal/menstrual) • Pregnancy discomforts, morning sickness, labour induction • Sleep • Skin conditions • Stress “Increased vitality”, “greater enjoyment of life” and “feeling better in myself ” are just some of the other benefits which my patients frequently cite.

of a hair thin needle in my amateur sketch, they are often only inserted just under the skin. The sensation can be described as a dull ache or tingling sensation that only lasts a second or two. I ensure that you’re always involved in the whole process, where everything is explained and all of your questions answered. Give it a go - don’t let the needles put you off – the rewards are more than worth it. Written by Vida Woods (Lic Ac, BSc (Hons), BSc (Hons), MBAcC). www.vidawoodsacupuncture.com, 07341 981 546, Facebook page: Vida Woods Acupuncture

Is acupuncture safe? Should I be scared? Yes – acupuncture is safe and no – you should not be scared! The clichéd image of acupuncture is someone being used as a human pin cushion with needles inserted head to toe. The reality is very different. There can be as few as 2 to 4 extremely fine, single-use, sterile needles used in one treatment. Many of my patients actually find the experience relaxing! All members of the British Acupuncture Council (UK’s largest regulatory body for traditional acupuncture) are fully qualified, insured acupuncturists - as am I - and follow strict codes of safe practice as a matter of course.

Is it ok to feel nervous when I try acupuncture for the 1st time? Yes - you are not alone. A recent survey of adults in the UK (2,000 respondents) showed 21% are too scared to try acupuncture because of the needles. It may help you to look at the photo contactus@loopmagazine.net

FINALIST

Facial & body issues - Ask Dr Wong!! Q. I am a 52 year old female worried about my lines & wrinkles. I have heard of Botox but not sure if this is the answer.

Locksheath Swim Squad A small but competitive Locksheath Swim Squad took part during the first two weekends of the Hampshire County Championships against larger clubs from across the region.

A. For some this may be the answer. Botox is great for muscle relaxation and finer lines, whereas dermal fillers are better for deeper lines and wrinkles. For those who would prefer an alternative to an injectable product, then opt for radio frequency skin tightening, plasma ionisationation or great skin care. If you choose a reputable clinic with a variety of treatments then a consultation with the practitioner will allow you to decide what’s best for you. Q. My 22 daughter wants bigger lips. I don’t think she needs anything bigger than she’s got but she says she’s old enough to go ahead without my permission! I worry that she’s going to look like a freak, what can I do! A. Lip augmentation is a growing trend for young people – particularly women, so it may be difficult to stop her. If she’s going to do it any way, then help her to find a reputable doctor who has everyday expertise with this treatment. A consultation will be offered where you can ask about the product used, any side effects and outcome. Beware of inexperienced nurses or others advertising sharing of vials and very cheap offers (this may be an indication of the quality of the products they are injecting) and always ask to see photos of patients they have treated. Q. I’m a 28 year old male struggling to find a girlfriend. I’ve had acne scars on my face since my teens and it affects my confidence with women. What can I do? A. There are a number of treatments that can help with acne scarring including peels, daily topical skin treatments as well as a very new treatment to the UK – Jett plasma ionisation. Seek a consultation with an expert in a clinic to find out which treatment would be best for you.

Undoubtedly the star performer was 11 year old Amelia Ayling, with silver medals in her 200m and 100m butterfly plus a bronze in the 50m event, all of these also automatic regional qualification times. She was also in the 12 year old 100m freestyle final coming 5th place. Other finalists were Grace Goddard bronze medallist in the 10/11 year olds 50m breaststroke, Mia Day 7th in the 10/11 year old 100 freestyle, Mary Edwards 4th position in the 12 year olds 100 breast and Evelyn Hall earnt 4th position in the 12 year old girls free. Other individual swimmers were Shannon Lamb, May Fletcher, Jan Stoop and Kyle Kirkland with many personal bests. In the relays their best performance was girls 10/12 medley of Edwards, Goddard, Ayling and Fletcher coming 7th and the boys 10/12 freestyle of Kirkland, Joshua Beaudro, Taylor Gargiulo and Thomas Larby finishing 9th. Other swimmers that competed at the championships were Evie Selby, Juliet Jarvie, Isla Croll, Ella Richardson-Fitt, Isabel Barbary and Eve Limburn. Coach Lynda Reid was extremely proud of the squad’s achievements and the improvement on last year.

Q .Why can’t I budge the fat around my tummy even when I lose weight! A. We are all predisposed to store fat in different places based on our lifestyle and genetic makeup, Equally, we will lose weight from some areas before others! Stubborn fat can be difficult to budge but there are ways of doing this. Speak to a clinic who specialises in fat reduction where they can target specific areas and often cause the fat cells to reduce or die. They will often give you a choice of affordable treatments to help. Call now to speak to a practitioner to answer any questions or to book for a consultation: 023 9238 2000 or email in confidence info@changesclinic.co.uk. contactus@loopmagazine.net

Lion President Roger Morfill recently attended Bishop’s Waltham Gateway Club to learn more about this very special group, that meets on the first and third Monday of each month at St. Peter’s church hall. The Gateway Club is a social club for people over 16 with learning disabilities and does a super job providing a full programme of fun activities for its members, including discos, games, group outings and Christmas dinners. The Lions were delighted to help with one of these events, by funding a pantomime trip for some 46 club members to see Dick Whittington at Ferneham Hall in Fareham. Roger was delighted to present a cheque for £610, covering the cost of the tickets, to Jan Chamberlain and Brian Loveday, who do such a great job running this club on a totally voluntary basis.

Just the ticket for the Gateway club!

Glee Club UK has Recorded at Abbey Road Studios! From the Beatles, Pink Floyd to cinema soundtracks such as Star Wars, Harry Potter and James Bond 007, Abbey Road Studios is probably the most famous recording studios in the world. As such it has been in demand as a premier recording venue for the last 80 years. Members from our Fareham club were part of a two-hundred strong choir who spent the day recording an album at the iconic London studios. A red-letter day for all concerned and a bucket list item for any musician or singer, Fareham group leader, Liz Marshall is very pleased with how things went. “It was the most amazing experience to be in Studio 1 and Studio 2 where so many famous people have recorded before us. The staff at Abbey Road were so welcoming and made us feel really special - it was a dream to record there. I’m so proud of my choir and how they sounded on the day. It is a day that we will remember forever!” Glee Club UK forms a group of adult community choirs based over the South of England with a local club based in Warsash. Meeting every Thursday evening, it’s open to men and women aged 16 and over, and is a fantastic way to de-stress. Come and join us, no auditions required, have fun and just be you! “I looked for ages to find an adult singing group like this. I didn’t want classical or serious, just to sing for myself and have fun. “I can’t imagine life without Glee and the wonderful friends I have made.” Interested in singing with us? Going back to school and meeting the ‘Teacher’! Before we get started here, I wanted to share a couple photographs of two local acts I photographed in the Horse and Jockey pub recently, Lewis Smith and The Kazbaas. What a great venue this pub is and a real pleasure to be photographing local artists in here, if you get chance to see live music here you won’t be disappointed! In addition to this, I had a real treat in that I was invited to shoot Heather Small from MPeople, Lewis Smith at the Horse and Jockey

Following my last article ‘The Stars Rolled Into Town’ in issue 15 of Loop Magazine, I started to think about where I started off and how I had learned about one of the most difficult areas of photography known as gig photography. I asked myself who influenced my passion for photography; I wondered what my ‘teacher’ would now think after two years behind the lens as a novice. Let’s be honest, I am a novice amateur photographer, not a professional however I was still keen to meet up with her again and chat about not only her work but how she got started. So I contacted my ‘Teacher’ or should I say a professional photographer who has a wide range of photography skills from headshots to product shots, and fashion, to a very ‘arty’ new area of photography called ‘light painting’, not only is she a professional photographer, she also teaches a number of disciplines within the photography world. So I called her up and set up an interview.

Julia Mills Photography Hi Julia, thanks for agreeing to meet up with me. How long have you been in the photography ‘business’? I’ve been a freelance photographer for around 10 years now, before that my love for photography started at school at the age 17.

How did you learn? Who was your ‘teacher’? I was taught in the days when the only way you could learn the skill was to buy a camera & film, take your photos then either send it away for development

or spend hours in the darkroom printing your own photos. Both of which I did on a regular basis. I was really lucky; my first photography tutor saw something in my work back then that, at the time, I couldn’t see. After his constant encouragement I became completely hooked. I then spent the next few years learning my craft. Did you intend on reaching academic levels for photography? I studied from GCSE to Degree level so I suppose yes this was a natural progression for me, following this I found myself in London working in a portrait studio. It was there that I discovered a love of teaching photography purely by chance (a long story I add) maybe another issue topic for Loop Magazine ha ha! During the time that I’ve been freelance I’ve become much more aware of my own personal shooting and teaching style and I have developed this by offering services that attract those who seem to love photography as much as I do. So this is where I met you right? Yes at my workshop in Hamble, I got a wide diverse audience coming through the door and it was great fun, especially the location; it was fantastic, from street scenes to lovely yachts and pleasure cruisers, and lots of sea of course! What’s not to like about photography in that environment! How long have you lived down in the South for? My husband and I moved to the South Coast in 2012, this is where you attended one of my ‘Beginners Intensive workshops’ which I ran in a local gallery down in Hamble I have to say Julia I was hooked there and then but unsure as to what path I would take, so you enjoyed the workshop? I recall taking photographs that day using skills you taught me, it wasn’t easy but the results were great, there was so much information to take in, getting off automatic settings on the camera opened up a whole can of worms for me! I then went on holiday and used the skills you gave me to capture some stunning shots, especially a seascape scene where the water was crashing against the rocks. In Issue 13 of Loop Magazine I do touch on areas of interest back then, flowers, landscapes, wildlife, yet I needed more and went into ‘gig photography’ I do see my early tutorials paying off even in my current chosen area of photography, the basic fundamental principles are the same it’s just a case of tweaking a few settings here and there, my back issues 13, 14, 15 in Loop Magazine have some pretty cool shots thanks to your ‘training’ and ‘advice’. So how does the workshop work for your students, what can they learn about photography? My aims during the workshops are to enable the students to unlock the hidden potential in all those camera menus without having to hunt through a hefty camera manual. The workshops are great fun and it’s a joy to see those same students gain confidence and release their inner creativeness once they master the skills using different settings! Are the workshops solely for groups Julia? Lately I’ve been teaching a lot of one to one sessions, this enables me to tailor make each session to the specific needs of the individual, whether that’s starting from the camera straight out of the box to someone who just needs a refresher on skills that they just haven’t made use of in a while. What about the exciting ‘light painting’ you do, I hear so much about this on your social media pages, tell me more as I am sure the readers will be keen to see what this is all about? One of the areas of photography that I’ve been able to develop whilst moving to this area (the South Coast) has been my interest in light painting. Light painting is basically using long exposures and torchlight to create your images rather than daylight or flash. It’s a very simple and fun technique which can lead to some very surprising and eye-catching results. In my photographs I aim to capture familiar local landmarks and

areas by making use of the light painting technique. This enables the viewer to see that subject in a completely different way the results are amazing, its looks great fun Julia. Well I am sure you will agree it’s a great hobby Julia, our readers are no doubt clicking away and wondering about whether they can improve their skills, whether they are inspired by their chosen discipline, or maybe they want to explore other areas of photography, take it from me, there’s so much to learn in photography and I am sure I will be calling you again soon! Thank you for your time and more importantly your ‘Beginners Intensive Workshops’ it’s a great way to understand the photography set up and use of the camera. You are welcome! Well readers, it’s time to go, I hope you enjoyed the article and I look forward to writing in the next issue of Loop Magazine Light painting by Julia Mills Photography www.juliamills.com Tel: 07808 119361

The LOOP Team Visits Southampton’s Carnival Academy LOOP Magazine was given the exciting opportunity to attend the opening of the Carnival Group development kitchen in Southampton. P&O Cruises and Cunard invited the team to the Academy event for a masterclass with French patissier and celebrity chef Eric Lanlard, dish and wine tasting, and an after lunch performance from P&O Cruises Headliners Theatre Company in partnership with Wilkes Academy. The new kitchen, which is to be used for both brands, will be an integral part of assisting on menu development, cooking processes, and features some new innovative equipment helping to shape and develop new dining concepts. Tempura of fresh Oysters, Galician blonde beef, Dominican Goat Curry, Dark Chocolate Mousse with Caramelised Smoked Apple, were just a few of the fresh dishes we were lucky enough to sample. The Carnival Academy and studios are the training facility for the on board production performers. It has four state of the art rehearsal rooms, as well as vocal studios and a wardrobe department, where casts go through a nine week rehearsal and training process encompassing both stagecraft and ship life. The creative team provide the cast members to the fleet, and P&O Cruises has over 70 performers at any one time using the facility, providing essential space needed to create the spectacular on board shows. P&O Cruises has joined forces with Jonathan Wilkes and Wilkes Academy in order to give opportunities and work experience on board ships to young performers. P&O Cruises has also introduced a sponsorship programme for two Wilkes Academy students each year in order to nurture and inspire new talent. The first two Wilkes Academy students to benefit from the P&O Cruises sponsorship are 21 year old Joel Ekperisin and 16 year old Charlotte Payne, both from Swindon. Joel began dancing at the age of 10 after moving to London from Nigeria. With street dancing his first passion he then joined Pineapple Studios and gained experienced in commercials, pantomime and music videos. Charlotte Payne began dancing at the age of two at Swindon Academy of Dance. She twice represented team England in the dance world cup in Portugal and Romania and went on to work with the BBC on dance show ‘GLEE CLUB’.

258,000 Babies Lost Each Year – Portsmouth Remembers Families from Portsmouth and the Solent who have suffered the pain of baby loss at any stage of pregnancy, birth or in infancy are invited to join a special service on Saturday 9th April 2016 at Portsmouth Cathedral. The International ‘Saying Goodbye’ services help families pay tribute to their lost babies and provide an opportunity for people to say goodbye. The Saying Goodbye services, are the first set of national commemorative services to take place in Cathedrals and Minsters across the UK. This is one of over 24 International services this year and the third time the service has come to Portsmouth. The service in Portsmouth will feature contemporary music, as well as poetry and readings, mixed with acts of remembrance and time for reflection. The service is free to attend and open to anyone of any faith or no faith. It is hoped that people from across Hampshire, the Solent and beyond will take the time to come to what has always been a beautiful and deeply moving service. The Saying Goodbye services were established by Devon couple Zoe and Andy Clark-Coates, who have lost five children through miscarriage. Zoe explains “Approximately one in four pregnancies end in miscarriage, which means that nearly 680 babies are lost each day leaving parents, grandparents, siblings and family friends in the depths of grief. We decided to take our experience of loss and create an organisation that could help others who have previously, or are currently going through the grief of losing a baby. The aim of the charity we set up called The Mariposa Trust, is to help support those who have suffered the pain of losing a child at any stage.” Andy commented: “Having lost five babies, we experienced firsthand how loss can affect people. We wanted to create services that would give a wonderful goodbye to babies that

have been lost, and allow the parents to grieve in a supportive environment. When you have parents saying ‘this is the first time in 50-years that I am being able to grieve and say goodbye’, you understand that whether it happened yesterday or half a century ago, the pain is still there, and people need help and support. We wanted to allow people from the region to have access to a Saying Goodbye service and the support that we offer.” Zoe added: “A loss before 24 weeks gestation is not recorded with a certificate, which leaves the parents with no official recognition of the baby’s life. As miscarriage often takes place at home without medical intervention, people can be left with no avenue for grief, and as no memorial service usually takes place, the opportunity to officially recognise the unborn life, can just pass by. With stillbirth and early infant loss, services are usually conducted quickly whilst parents are in the depth of despair, and not at a time when people can truly take onboard and process the grief. Saying Goodbye aims to give people the opportunity to remember their lost baby in a fitting way, whilst also uniting with others who have faced similar sadness.” Professor Robert Winston, one of Saying Goodbye’s many Ambassadors, said: “Miscarriage is often something that’s not acknowledged or talked about in the UK, and people certainly do not appreciate how utterly distressing it is for women, and indeed their extended families. It’s a loss of a precious life, and whether the loss happens in early or late pregnancy it’s traumatic, and a natural grief process must be allowed to happen. I hope that these services will be a turning point in the nation, and through this new organisation miscarriage will become more widely understood, and families will know that their pain and loss has been heard and recognised.” For more information please visit the Saying Goodbye website www.sayinggoodbye.org or follow on Twitter @SayinggoodbyeUK

Everyone Has a Story to Tell

Solent Garage Doors

Autobiographies are one of most popular and successful genres in modern literature, but it’s not just the life stories and memoirs of the rich and famous that are worth telling. We all live exceptional lives filled with adventure and success, sadness and loss, with tales, anecdotes and secrets. What if you could have your own story written for posterity? Perhaps that of a family member or close friend, a significant place or organisation that’s played a part in your life... Now you can with the collaborative work of professional writer and published author, Edward Couzens-Lake and design publishing house Tidbury Media, whose passion it is to make your story a literal reality. “As a writer, Edward reveals, I’m fascinated by the stories that people have to tell, stories that are all too often either never told or are ultimately lost forever. My own Grandfather’s falls into that latter category and it’s a lasting regret of mine that I never sat down with him to record it when I had the opportunity.” Everyone Has a Story to Tell is open to everyone. Your story could be ghost-written before being carefully typeset and presented as a beautifully printed book to share among your family and friends. The whole process is managed for you from the beginning through to delivery. “There’s nothing quite like opening a box of brand new books with your name on the cover waiting to be enjoyed.” Daniel Tidbury, Senior Publisher at Tidbury Media, comments. “We’re passionate about you, and the stories you have to tell.” So if you think you’ve got a story worth telling, for yourself or for future generations, why not take the opportunity to commission your very own book? Whiteley Primary Sweep us into Spring Locks Heath Rotary loves to work for their community and that is where the focus has been this spring. The Schools Music Festival is always a great favourite of the Club. This project has been running for over 20 years and gives the opportunity for young people to sing and play for a large audience. The parents, relatives and friends of the competitors poured into the Victory Hall at Warsash. The Rotarians assisted by Locks Heath Inner wheel hosted seven choir, twenty soloists and ten duets & ensembles. It was a joy to see the skill and enthusiasm of the young people, this was demonstrated by the noise in the green room.

As a result of Locks Heath School putting in small choirs we hope to create a new category next year to encourage more children to sing but there was no doubt that Whiteley Primary School swept the board. Rotary District Governor, Tony Summers awarded the prizes and said that this was a great event and that all the children were winners.

The National Watersports Festival returns for 10th Anniversary edition! The National Watersports Festival will be returning to Hayling Island for the 10th anniversary edition over the weekend of the 2nd4th September 2016 and this week celebrates six months to the start! Going back to its roots and focusing on windsurfing, alongside one of the world’s fastest growing sports of stand up paddle boarding, this is one event to lock off on your calendar. Three days of spectacular action on the water, ‘have a go’ sessions, demo testing, live music, night time flood lit displays, parties, food and drink stalls and, new for this year, family focused activities, will all be on offer at Hampshire’s favourite watersports festival. Supported by Havant Borough Council the NWF has grown to accommodate 500 competitors and 10,000 spectators, all eager to see the world renowned field take to the water. Allan Cross, event director explains: “When we started this event a decade ago we really didn’t know how many people would attend and what the reaction would be like but from the very first festival the NWF has exceeded all our expectations. “To attract the record number of competitors we do and the crowds, in their thousands, that the event pulls in is testament to the special event that this NWF has become. This year we want to deliver a weekend that raises the bar on previous years and we’ve got a number of things up our sleeve that will make this a must-attend event for both competitors and spectators alike. “Our thanks, as always, go to Havant Borough Council for their unwavering support and the residents of the island who are always incredibly welcoming and support the event in so many ways.”

In the pipeline for the 10th anniversary edition is live music throughout the weekend - day and night - that spectators can enjoy and a host of attractions that will keep everyone occupied from the minute they enter the event grounds. More will be announced over the coming months but keep checking NWF’s social media and website www.nationalwatersportsfestival.com for more details. The NWF has become known as the people’s festival so all ‘weekend warriors’ who take their windsurfers or SUPs out across the weekend are being encouraged to sign up and challenge themselves in the huge number of races which take place over the festival. “There are events for all ages and experience and even a number of fancy dress heats, where competitors can simply disguise themselves if they’re not very confident on their board!” concludes Allan Cross. www.nationalwatersportsfestival.com

Charter NI Get a Taste of Navy Life Recently a group of young adults currently involved with the charity Charter for Northern Ireland (Charter NI) made the journey to England to visit the Royal Navy (RN). The group, aged 15-19, began their trip at Portsmouth’s Historic Dockyard where they attended a presentation by a RN careers advisor, aiming to educate the group on life within the RN or Royal Marines. Their visit was part of a 3 day insight to the career and lifestyle of a sailor in the Royal Navy, introducing them to military leadership and team building. In support of this they visited HMS Collingwood, Fareham, where they were given the chance to participate in some Physical Leadership Training at the Royal Navy Leadership Academy based on the Fareham site. Activities included the “Fall of Faith” and “Low Ropes”, which saw individuals volunteer to lead the group and participate in team building exercises with the aim of improving their communication skills. Charter NI’s Project Manager John Douglas and Youth Worker Thomas Warnock said of the experience “We are here to build confidence and self-esteem whilst taking them out of their comfort zone, if we can inspire the group to understand that they have a lot of choices when it comes to building a career then that’s great. They are all from deprived areas and were approached through our outreach work; we feel it is key to get involved with the local community for these guys to realise what they could be capable of.” Since 2000, Charter NI has studied the causes of conflict at community level within Northern Ireland. They aim to provide a forum for creative and challenging discussion, whilst offering direction and hope for previously disengaged individuals within deprived communities. They work with a wide spectrum of knowledgeable organisations and professionals, to combat issues such as; low levels of educational achievement, mental health, community safety issues and many more to enable communities to develop positively.

70 | The LOOP

contactus@loopmagazine.net

The visit was made possible through Charter NI’s strong relationship with Active Communities Network, Asda Foundation and Big World Impact, who all aim to improve communities and create a positive impact on the people within them. Julian Wadsworth, Community Engagement Manager for Big World Impact, commented “When talking to the guys from Charter NI, it has become clear that in Belfast they seem to lack visibility of the Navy and the opportunities it offers, it’s very important for us to team up as it helps both organisations to seek out these experiences for the young adults. We also get an insight in to the contrasts between local issues within Northern Ireland and England.” One member of the group, Frazer Mackinnon, said of the visit “I am now considering applying to become a Royal Marine, I didn’t know much about the lifestyle or training until the past 2 days, it’s really inspired me.” The final day was spent with Leigh Park Amateur Boxing Club and Leigh Park Youths enjoying interactive sport sessions, promoting their team working abilities.

All Hands on Deck to Get Rainbow Centre in Ship Shape! A group of officers, currently on course at HMS Collingwood in Fareham, came together recently to actively revive the garden in The Rainbow Centre. The Rainbow Centre, based in Fareham, is a charity run programme providing Conductive Education to children with Cerebral Palsy and also offers a range of specialised services for adults with motor disorders aiming to provide a better quality of life for the individual. In 2007 the charity received funding to create and open ‘The Garden of Rainbows’ which hosts a collection of items such as mirrors, herbs and wind chimes to stimulate the senses. On arrival of the centre the 5 officers were given a tour and the opportunity to meet some of the children whilst in their sessions. With the pupils currently unable to enjoy the centre’s garden, due to unsafe conditions created by bad weather, the group from course Principal Warfare Officers Course 178 seized the opportunity to get involved and improve this. The team got to work on maintaining the safety and preservation of the rubberised play surface within the ‘Garden of Rainbows’; spending the afternoon gardening, scrubbing and jet washing the area. Providing them with the man power to complete the project was a sign of HMS Collingwood’s continued support towards The Rainbow Centre, with various volunteering projects and donations contributed from the naval base over the years. The officers involved are now looking to encourage future visits to help out the centre.

Reading, Writing, Skiing? When it comes to Skiing most secondary schools manage to run an annual or bi annual ski trip to the Alps with a group of children, some who have never skied before and some who have had limited skiing through family holidays. The level of skiing, progression and opportunities are limited and as the United Kingdom is classed as a Lowland country in the alpine sports world and lacking from the “white stuff ” you would not expect children to want to be anything more than a recreational skier let alone a ski racer. Well! Sarisbury Junior School has other ideas and in the last year formed the SJS Ski team. Yes, a Ski team! One of the younger pupils Geno Hounsham happened to be at the Southampton Sports Centre for a football match one Sunday morning when his attention was drawn to the dry ski slope where there was a lot noise and activity. He asked his parents if he could take a closer look as Geno had been skiing on many occasions but was unaware that there were local ski race events. On closer inspection, what they found was a winter series race hosted by the Southampton Area Ski Association (SASA) consequently conversations were had and Geno went along trained on the dry ski slope and joined the club. There were two SASA winter series races left of the season which Geno was able to compete in and by surprise managed to pick up Silver followed by a Gold medal. Now the dilemma, what event was next?

The SASA Interschool’s Race was mentioned however this is a school event and you needed a school team. Well Geno was the only skier competing from his school and Sarisbury Juniors never had a ski team. So Geno’s father had a conversation with the headmaster Mr Stockton and a plan was hatched to send an E-mail to all parents at the School informing them of the upcoming schools ski event and that the school was looking for participants. With great surprise twelve interested children came forward and along with Geno they all competed for the first time at the Interschool’s event. Some of the children had only skied a few times and never through race gates but with a few practice sessions under their belts the children all embraced the challenge. The Racing SJS finished a commendable sixth place on the day and all the children were buzzing with excitement and asking “when we can race again”. This came soon after in the Southern Schools open race where the SJS “A” team picked up third place and the “B” team sixth. SJS also received a fantastic boost when one of the parents stepped forward without being asked and offered to sponsor the team shirts and this was topped off with matching pom pom hats. (A big thank you to Viking Projects) We now had a team that looked the part and could compete alongside other established school teams. With the early successes of the team the head master took great pride in telling parents of the new year three students at the school open evening of the rise of the ski team and the team have already recruited new team members ready to take to the slopes. SJS has recently competed in the English Schools Ski Association (ESSKIA) Southern Schools qualifiers were the Boys came third just missing out on selection for the English School Ski Championships and the Girls team fourth rounding off a great summer of racing for the school. 2016 will be a very interesting year for the ski team as many of them have now joined SASA and train every week and the level of skiing has improved tremendously. With a village known for Sailing and Cricket who knows one day we may have an alpine champion?

Community News Tilly and her Team are off to Cup Denmark Tilly Barr, 12, from Knowle found her interest in football during her time at junior school. After winning the Fareham School cup and continuing to play the sport, it was in year 6 of juniors that she recognised her passion for football and asked her parents if she could commit to a team. Tilly’s father found that Portsmouth FC ladies youth section were holding trials. Without a second thought Tilly jumped at this opportunity and after an intense few weeks of trials she secured her place at Portsmouth Youth. Tilly started playing for the under 11 age group and now dedicates two evenings a week for training and every Saturday to a league or cup game where she loves to play her preferred position left midfield. Not only is it her enthusiasm for playing football, Tilly enjoys being part of a team, the girls have created a strong bond with friendships made and laughter along the way. Opportunities and achievements are continuing to grow for the ladies youth section, Tilly and her team fought their way through to the under 12 league final where they were awarded runners up. A proud moment for the newly formed team. With support from the coaches and managers at Portsmouth FC ladies Youth Section there goal is to encourage ladies football to become more popular than ever before. Looking out for natural talent and guiding the girls in the right direction for a potentially professional future. With the girls best interest at hearts the Portsmouth Youth Section Coordinator has challenged the girls by entering them in the 2016 Cup Denmark Tournament. In July 2016, team players, friends and family will fly into the beautiful City of Copenhagen Denmark. Over a four day stay the girls will showcase their skills up against the Swedish champions Rosengard, Malmo, Brighton, Peterborough and various teams from Europe and America. The Tournament itself will be held at Ishoj a fabulous place offering many activities beyond football for some much earned downtime.

January 2016 I have just typed January 2016 for the first time and it has given me such a shock I think I need help and guidance from someone. At least it was a good job I was sitting down at the time. It is true that time passes more quickly the older you get, but, hang on, 2016 has come round far too quickly! Our fundraising depends a lot on the generosity of folk at Christmas, and I will report our figures next month. However we do try to fundraise at other times and we held an enjoyable Pony Rides and Cream teas event in September. Luckily you did not have to ride the Pony whilst eating the Cream tea (we’ll do that next time), nor did any of the ponies eat the Cream teas (although a number looked as though they might be interested).

Tilly is now if full flow of training preparing for her biggest football challenge yet and whilst excitement levels are at a high the organisation behind the scenes are non-stop. In order for Tilly and her team to travel, the youth section had to raise an extreme amount of money to cover every cost! The team themselves have participated in a number of fund raising events to ensure that they hit target and every girl has the opportunity to attend. Braving the bitter wind and rain in early January the girls smashed a 12.5 mile sponsored walk, Morrison’s Supermarket Victory Park helped by offering our girls a bag packing weekend, we introduced Travel My T-shirt where team players contacted local companies requesting a sponsor for Cup Denmark. The player will wear the company logo on their T-shirt to travel to and from Denmark and at all of our fund raising events. These are just to name a few and without the continuous support from the Portsmouth FC Ladies coordinator, parents of players and the kindness of local companies who have invested time and spirit in us, none of this could be possible! Once the team have hit target, it’s all down to Tilly and her team to show us all what they are made of. It goes without saying what a huge experience this will be and what it may bring for Tilly. She will wear the Portsmouth Crest with pride and make her parents proud. Although Tilly can see her career heading down the medical route, she cannot possibly imagine her future without a ball at her feet. Follow our status and progress and Cup Denmark YouTube.

The only point in mentioning fund raising is that we have recently helped three charitable associations involved with local families and young people: Home-Start, Rose Road and the Teenage Dropin Centre. We had the pleasure of welcoming representatives of the three charities who came to our lunch meetings and explained their work and their needs. We are delighted to say we were able to respond to their appeal and we wish them well with the wonderful work they do. Rotary is not all about fundraising I hear you cry. You are right. We have had a talk this month about ‘ferrets’. I now know a lot about the sex life of the ferret. I am sure it is going to come in useful sometime. Long live the Mustela putorius furo. And best wishes to you all in 2016. May we wish you everything you would wish yourselves. If you are interested in volunteering or would like to mention a local need please get in touch through our website hamblevalleyrotary.co.uk Carey Blake - Hamble Valley Rotary contactus@loopmagazine.net

We are an active club, rowing all year round most Sunday mornings, normally a row to Hamble for coffee or a longer row up river to the Horse and Jockey pub. If the tide is right it’s possible to have an evening row for curry in Botley. Rowing back in the twilight is a magical experience! During the summer, the more competitive Members take part in the Hamble River Raid, Netley Regatta, The River Hamble Games, Bursledon Regatta and the Great River Race on the Thames.

Visitors will be able to get straight in a boat to try rowing with experienced members and you should be on the water within 10 minutes of arriving. Complete beginners are very welcome. We can promise you will have fun learning to row! We row Bursledon Gigs, very stable boats which take four rowers and a cox. They are very suitable for beginners and the more experienced. The club keeps 5 Bursledon gigs in the water so that up to 50 people can row on most Tuesday evenings, our club night, in the summer months. And of course, we have the pub on the doorstep. 80 | The LOOP

Robert reported he was having a batch of new brake drums manufactured. Our club holds a very substantial stock of quality used parts, including body panels. Parts can be acquired by making contact with our club, a discount is offered to Austin members. Our last meeting was held on the 10th March at the Empress of Blandings, it was particularly well attended with both our regular and newer members, and good to see two Austin’s in the car park. Our original planned speaker unfortunately could not attend, however every cloud has a silver lining. At very short notice John Avery stepped to give an excellent talk on the demise of Lord Kitchener the famous General who appeared on the iconic World War One recruiting posters. Spring is nearly here and as always there will be many events to take part in. ‘Drive it Day’ will take place on the 24th April this year, which is a day when all Classic Car owners are urged to use their vehicles, there will be a planned event for this day. Our next meeting is scheduled to take place at our normal venue on the 14th April. Our guest speaker will be Brain Farncombe from the Institute of Advanced Motorists, this promises to be an interesting topic for all car enthusiasts. There are many motoring and social events to look forward to during the coming months. New members always made welcome. For more information go to www.austina35sotongroup.co.uk
