The art of accessories Outdoor home improvements are the current buzzword that is blurring the distinction between our interior rooms and our gardens. With the Seniors Challenge set to take place at the HMS Collingwood Open Day on Saturday 4 June, the annual Junior Leaders Field Gun Competition is following suit with the final on Friday 8 July. This competition reflects the traditional Royal Navy Field Gun, introducing the sport to youths aged 18-25. The teams will consist of individuals who have either recently joined the Armed Forces, have just begun apprenticeships with major commercial organisations or who are studying at local colleges.

Leaders Challenge offering youths a chance to work as a team and challenge them in a unique setting, the training and overall experience also comes as a valuable experience for team members that are considering a career in the armed forces. Steve Christian, Field Gun Officer for Fareham College, said of the visit “It’s been a great opportunity for the course to receive this training, it acts as a guide for our future sessions at the college and also gives the students a look into military life as we currently have roughly 10 individuals in the team looking at a career in the Royal Navy and Royal Marines. The session today has been a great motivation for everyone as it has taken the team out of their comfort zone, giving them the extra push to show the trainers what they can really do!” Fareham College have entered the challenge for 6 years, last year the crew even won the Endeavour trophy, which recognises the crew who have shown the greatest improvement throughout the competition. The team will now continue their endurance training every Tuesday morning until the competition.

The team from the Uniformed Service course at Fareham College, aged between 17 and 20, got a first hand glimpse into the intense training of a naval field gunner as the two organisations strengthen their ongoing relationship. They were invited to the establishment’s Sports and Recreation Centre for a training session with Chief Physical Trainer Jimmy Forwell and Leading Physical Trainer Will Ballanger, replicating the preparation in which Royal Navy sailors endure once they have joined their respective field gun team. 2016 Youth Awards The Council is keen to acknowledge the voluntary work carried out by young people in the Borough, and nominations for The Mayor of Eastleigh’s Youth Award for Volunteering 2016 (supported by Eastleigh Lions and One Community) are now being sought. The awards are for young people aged 11-18, who can be nominated for either a gold or silver award. A silver award is for at least 50 hours of volunteering in the previous 12 months (from date of nomination). A gold award is for at least 100 hours of volunteering in the previous 12 months (from date of nomination). Volunteering activities include helping older people, being a carer for family or friends, fundraising for a good cause, taking a role in an organisation like the Scouts, helping in school, and so on. Activities can include formal or informal volunteering roles. The eligibility criteria are as follows:

• The young person must know they are being nominated and why. • Their parent/carer must be aware of the nomination. The award is to recognise the voluntary work of young people in the Borough. We are keen to recognise young people who regularly volunteer, and also to acknowledge the invaluable contribution of all young volunteers. Those nominated will be invited to a presentation as part of One Community’s volunteer award evening. This will take place on the 7th June during Volunteers’ Week. If you know a young person who you would like to nominate, the nomination form can be found on Eastleigh Borough Council’s website.

• You must have known the young person you nominate for more than 6 months. • You must not be related to the young person. • The young person must either live in the Borough of Eastleigh or undertake the activity they are being recognised for in the Borough of Eastleigh. • They must be under the age of 19 on 1 June 2016.

HASAG are an asbestos support group covering the whole of the south coast and around 43 hospitals, the group supports sufferers and families through difficult times, informing them about the illness and of what financial support is available. Another reason behind the walk is to honour Uncle Jack. He kept fit and healthy, gardening and socialising with friends and family until Jan 2015, when his illness started. Uncle Jack remained positive throughout and was determined to keep fighting, which showed the kind of person he was. Uncle Jack was very loved and was an ‘true English Gentleman, who had a zest for life. After 8 months of deterioration, Uncle Jack sadly passed away in Aug 2015 due to an Asbestos related illness called mesothelioma which was in his case an industrial disease. Uncle Jack had spoken about his greatest achievement in life, which was doing this same walk in 1969. The sisters, his nieces, have the framed certificate that states out of the 136 walkers only 46 completed the course and he was one of them. Walking all of this way in office brogue shoes, as seen in the picture. The girls have been training locally wearing their HASAG t-shirts now for many months so if you pass them, give them a toot, as it’s always nice to have support from the local area.

Known as the island of serendipity, Sri Lanka has a hot and wet tropical climate caused by its close location to the equator. Although the island is only a little larger than Ireland, it has a huge amount of diversity. On a trip to Sri Lanka you can enjoy game reserves, the seaside, unspoiled plains and the bustling cities of Colombo and Kandy. Sri Lanka has two monsoon seasons so there is a fair chance you’ll get wet on your visit. If you are heading to the capital city Colombo, the season runs from April to October, while the rains come from November through to February on the eastern side of the island. Further inland the island is hilly and the weather tends to be hot and wet all year round. The east of the country is far less developed than the west, but if you’re happy to head off on the beaten track you will be rewarded with some of the finest beaches in the world. If beaches are your thing you simply must head to the harbour town of Trincomalee, which is home to idyllic long stretches of palm-fringed sand. Andark Diving and Watersports If you’ve driven past a rather ordinary looking red brick building, just opposite Swanwick Marina with ‘Andark’ on the front you probably thought, like us, that this was just a chandlery or similar type of shop. So, when we received a call in the Loop Magazine office asking us if we’d like a tour around Andark’s water sports ‘Aladdin’s Cave’ and a ‘Try Dive’ in their fully heated indoor swimming pool, we were intrigued and naturally jumped at the chance! Andark Diving and Watersports, to use its full title, is actually celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. Its roots began with diving, however, over the past four decades Andark has become synonymous with every type of water sport there is, from sailing to paddle boarding and from triathlon swimming to kayaking. Andark does indeed have a shop, which, they’re delighted to boast, holds one of the largest and most competitively priced stocks of clothing and equipment on the south coast with all the big names from Henri Lloyd to Crewsaver. Andark, as we were to find out, has so much more and is best described as a Tardis with a swimming pool, classrooms, an outdoor watersports lake, state of the art Wifi conference rooms, a café, multiple changing rooms and one of the UK’s only privately owned under water helicopter escape simulators. My tour starts in the Andark shop and as I wander around I decide that I wish I’d known about this place years ago as there are flip flops, boardies, snorkel sets, wets suits, dry suits, offshore watersproofs; you name it. It’s all here (and they’re right; at pretty rock bottom prices!). They even sell Go Pros to capture all the action. From the shop I get taken down to the pool area where I’m shown a seriously impressive piece of equipment enroute; an Underwater Escape Training Unit (HUET) - to teach aviators how to evacuate and survive from a ditched Aircraft. “This has actually saved

lives,” I’m told, “as pilots who’ve used this and crash landed in water were trained how to get out using this very machine.” I’m impressed but not impressed enough to go in it, although I’m told it is also used for corporate events! The Andark Pool is the ideal setting for my first go at diving as there’s a shallow end and also a much deeper end where you can really get further down to experience the sheer exhilaration of being underwater. The pool is used for a host of different activities including swimming lessons and teaching children diving from age eight with Saturday / holiday classes and diving birthday parties (Aquanauts). The pool is also utilised for a number of RYA courses, such as sea survival, so by the sounds of it there’s always masses going on. It’s a quick change and then I meet my instructor, Ben who immediately puts me at ease and starts showing me the ropes. Ben runs through all the breathing apparatus and how to use it, as well as the basic hand signs and how to clear my mask when underwater. The briefing is very thorough and I learn more than I had expected to. Ben really makes sure I understand everything properly before we go into the deeper water and is happy to go through things twice if I got it wrong the first time. We’re underwater a lot longer than I thought we would be and it feels quite surreal and completely different to anything I’ve done before. I really enjoy the “zero-gravity” feeling of diving in such deep water; it feels great to swim around independently and I feel safe in the knowledge that Ben is keeping an eye on things the whole time. I’m struck by how quiet it is and when it’s time to surface I can understand why diving is such a popular sport. Once my Tri Dive is finished I’m feeling exhilarated and keen to do more. “This is why we love to do Try Dives here as it draws people straight into this phenomenal sport,” explains Ben. “They’re hooked and then there’s a whole new world to discover below the water that so many people simply never encounter.”

After my dive I’m taken to Andark Lake, which is quietly hidden up a small lane at the back of the shop/ pool complex. The guys are really proud of this lake, which has only been open for about two years. And so they should be. I never in a million years thought that this place existed. Double the length of an Olympic swimming pool, the lake is set in beautiful and very peaceful surroundings, with woodland and rolling countryside providing the perfect backdrop.

The lake is seven metres deep, and beneath the surface lies a submerged jet ski and the bow of a 17th century barge. This lake is cited as being the first in Europe that has been purpose built for diving. As well as providing a natural and safe environment for outdoor dives, which are a requisite for many diving qualifications, the lake has been adopted by other water sports enthusiasts including open water swimmers, kayakers and sailors who use the lake to practise capsize drills or bring children for their first taste of dinghy sailing. With first class changing rooms, a café and state of the art function rooms, I’m told that the lake has also been used for corporate events and training.

With Andark and all its facilities right on our doorstep, I’ve come away armed with diving brochures and leaflets and a promise to myself that I’ll be back. The Tri Dives are ideal for people of all ages (from age 8) and this unique experience is definitely worth a go. I warn you though, once you have a go, you’ll be hooked, just like me. Holly Hill Leisure Centre right on track Construction of the new Holly Hill Leisure Centre is progressing well and will open later this year.

What’s happened so far? The main structure of the building is now complete, the two swimming pool tanks are in place and the filtration equipment and air conditioning have been installed. The external glazing is being put in place in May, after which passers-by will get to see what the finished building will look like.

What next? Once the main contractor has completed their works, the building will be handed over to Everyone Active, who will run the Leisure Centre. Everyone Active will install the fitness related items such as the gym equipment and lane markers and the starting blocks for the main swimming pool. Not just a leisure centre

Work is now underway to install underfloor heating and the electrical cabling to supply the building. This includes a state of art audio–visual system for the dance studio and fitness gym!

Two new football pitches for junior use will be provided next to the Leisure Centre.

Work on the 203 space car park is also underway, with the final surfacing being laid.

A brand new children’s play area and multi-use games area (MUGA) will also be installed once the Leisure Centre is complete. The MUGA will be suitable for a range of ages and abilities and will provide a space for sports such as football, basketball and netball.

Estate agent is now a successful artist To many, an artist’s life is a carefree and relaxed existence. But in pursuing success as a professional wildlife painter, Clive Meredith from Warsash, it’s busier than ever. “It is a hand to mouth existence and you do it for the love of it, certainly not the money,” says Clive, a former estate agent in the Chichester area (who gave up in 1993 to be a full-time artist). “I have 12 events planned throughout 2016 ranging from Titchfield Art Show in April through to The Great Yorkshire Show in July and Gatcombe International Horse Trials in August, not forgetting Hampshire Open Studios of course towards the end of August.” Clive has to juggle research and reference gathering. Although there is a good amount of wildlife on his doorstep in Warsash, he has also travelled extensively in Asia and Africa in search of wildlife to paint. He has to produce his work, often from his own photographs back in the studio/gallery. The final stage in the process is to find and create sales opportunities.

Clive is exhibiting his work at events coming up at a number of different locations. Local events include: • The New Forest and Hampshire County Show in Brockenhurst, which will be running from July 26 to 28. • The Hampshire Open Studios event, which will be held at Clive Meredith Wildlife Studio/Gallery, 60 Warsash Road, Warsash, Southampton SO31 9JA, from August 20 to 28. • 6The Southern Nature Art Exhibition, which will take place at Rookesbury Manor, Wickham, Hampshire from September 9 to 11. He adds: “So aside from my collectable originals I have also produced my own high quality, affordable limited edition prints and cards, which are an important area of growth during challenging economic times. Selling work is all about finding the right customer and providing them with what they need. It’s increasingly a sales environment and my experience as an estate agent is undoubtedly helpful. I think many artists crawl into their shells and really prefer not to play any part in this commercial exercise, but if you believe in your work you can do extremely well. Customers like to talk to you and find out how you produced a piece and what you were thinking at the time. “Sales come through a variety of avenues from selling work on Facebook through to meeting customers at events and in my own studio. But I also like to exhibit in galleries and have some exciting meetings scheduled this year.” Clive works in graphite and oils. He was a finalist in the DSWF Wildlife Artist of the Year in 2010, 2012 and 2013 with works exhibited at The Mall Galleries in London. Clive was Wildscape Magazines Wildlife Artist of the Year in 2010. He is a published artist with works held in collections worldwide. He was last year recognized as a Master Pencil Artist by the Pencil Art Society of Canada and is a member of Creative Coverage, which represents selected professional artists and craftspeople. Pupils buy a Buddy Bench to promote friendship and caring at Titchfield Primary School Young Governors at Titchfield Primary School have helped to design and pay for a new Buddy Bench for their school playground. Buddy benches and Friendship seats are used in many schools to address loneliness and foster friendship in the playground. The idea is that any children who are looking for someone to play with them, who are upset, or who wish to talk about a concern can go to the Buddy Bench. Lunchtime supervisors, designated buddy pupils or any pupil can foster a sense of friendship by looking after, chatting to or playing with a child sitting on a Buddy Bench. Neptune Street Furniture, a local company who have been manufacturing park and school playground furniture since the 1960’s were delighted to help the children by coming up with a range of design concepts to put forward to the school PTA. “Starting with our standard products, we looked at what material would provide the school with a low maintenance and hard wearing solution that could be customised to meet the children’s ideas and expectations. We then provided several design ideas and colour schemes for the children to work with.” Explained Alan Gingell, MD of Neptune Street Furniture. In this instance the PTA chose brightly coloured recycled plastic for their seat and then the schools Young Governors voted on their favourite inspirational phrase to be engraved into the seat slats. It was decided that hand prints would be a fun and friendly addition to the design and several of the children from different years at the school were invited to Neptune Street Furniture’s factory, where the furniture is manufactured, to paint hand prints that would later be CNC engraved into the seat slats. 38 | The LOOP

Neptune Street Furniture manufacture a large range of brightly coloured recycled plastic furniture and kindly donated a matching litter bin to the school, to acknowledge all the hard work by the Young Governors and PTA. The pupils were delighted with the end result and thought the Buddy Bench would not only be a colourful and fun addition to their playground but be a lasting legacy for the school, helping to cherish friendships and promote caring for many years to come.

From Cabin “Boys” to Captains: 250 years of Women at Sea Book launch to mark Shieldhall’s first cruise of 2016 Steamship Shieldhall, Southampton’s hidden heritage asset, commences its sailing programme for 2016 on Saturday 4th June with a 2-hour morning cruise of the Southampton Docks, followed by an afternoon cruise down Southampton Water. As the cruises coincide with the Southampton Beer Festival, there will be a selection of real ales on board, courtesy of the Romsey Flack Manor Brewery. In between the two cruises, Shieldhall will be welcoming author Dr Jo Stanley aboard, for a launch of her book ‘From Cabin “Boys” to Captains: 250 years of Women at Sea’. Tracing the progress that women have made in seafaring jobs through the centuries, Jo Stanley recounts the stories of dancers, purserettes, doctors, stewardesses, captains and conductresses, all of whom have taken to the waves on everything from floating palaces to battered windjammers. Their daring story is barely known, even by today’s seawomen. Many of those veteran pioneers will be on board to celebrate, meet interested people and enjoy the voyages with Clare. In keeping with the theme of the day, the book launch will be attended by Southampton’s Admiral of the Port, the Mayor Councillor Cathie McEwing, whilst Shieldhall’s Captain for the two cruises will be Clare Holmes. ‘We are very much looking forward to welcoming Jo Stanley aboard and commencing our 2016 sailing programme’ said Shieldhall Marketing Director Nigel Philpott. ‘Jo’s book is a fascinating read; a lively compendium of stories and interviews with female pioneers in both the Merchant Navy and Royal Navy. Jo also has some interesting ideas for helping more women go to sea, some of which are controversial! feels like home. And I’ve sailed into this berth on a tall ship recently. Women climbing aloft could be best be understood by going up the mast myself, I thought. So I did. No, I wasn’t scared but my knees certainly showed me that it’s a young person’s job!’ An all-day Solent Cruise, returning to see the cruise ships Britannia, Celebrity Eclipse, Azura and Queen Victoria depart will be staged on Sunday 5th June between 3.00pm and 7.00pm. Further June Shieldhall sailings will take place on Saturday 18th June, when the wonderful Soulcatchers will be on board, and Father’s Day Sunday 19th June, when guest commentator Colin van Geffen will highlight the important role that Southampton Water and The Solent played in aviation history. All Shieldhall cruises allow access to the Engine Room and Boiler Room, whilst passengers are also encouraged to visit the Bridge and meet the Captain. There is plenty of seating on board, both on the covered Awning Deck and Saloon, and open decks. Refreshments are available and there is a licensed bar on board. The Shieldhall is run entirely by volunteers, and everyone purchasing a ticket for a Shieldhall cruise helps support the charity running Shieldhall to keep her ‘alive and steaming’!

Wyvern Arts Festival 2016 Wyvern Arts Festival returns from 8 – 14 July 2016, centred around a Big Top tent and showcasing the talents of the College community in music, drama, dance and art. The opening concert will celebrate the timeless classics of Frank Sinatra as the Big Top hosts Anthony Adams, acknowledged as one of the best tributes to Sinatra in the UK and Europe. Your dog, micro chipping and the law Plus - How well does your dog behave in public? Did you know that from April 2016 it is a legal requirement for all dogs (over 8 weeks old) to be micro chipped? This means that the police, police community support officers and local authority representatives can check that your dog has been chipped. Did you also know it is a requirement to have your dog wearing an ID tag with collar (or harness) with all up to date contact details engraved? This is according to the Control of Dogs Order 1992. These requirements are here to protect our dogs and to ensure responsible dog ownership. Too many dogs end up in the local council pound or overstretched rescues, with no ID and collar or microchip. Each year up to 250,000 pets go missing, furthermore incredibly up to 100,000 dogs are abandoned each year. This costs the taxpayer and animal charities £57,000,000 a year. (Source www.gov.uk) As you can imagine as well as being heartbreaking for the owner who is wondering what has happened to their beloved pet, also local shelters are at breaking point looking after and feeding dogs that need not be there. If they have a microchip, a simple scan across the neck and shoulder area will reveal the dog’s address and contact details. Therefore a lost family pet might only be away from home for a matter of days instead of weeks. As a deterrent to ensure that owners are responsible, the fines are quite heavy. You could receive a fine of up to £500 should your dog be found without a chip. No ID tag and collar can lead potentially to an even higher fine, up to £2,000. I have heard from the extensive Happy Dogs Training community that many owners have recently been stopped and checked to ensure their dog is chipped and has all relevant details on their

ID tag and collar. Checks can now include ensuring that you are carrying an adequate amount of poo bags. Don’t let it be you that incurs a fine, micro chipping is quick and painless, and some vets and pet centres are offering this service for as little as £10. Some animal charities can even offer free micro chipping. Your vet should be able to offer advice regarding chipping if you need detailed information on how the quick and easy procedure is carried out. - And remember, responsible dog ownership doesn’t just stop at ensuring they are chipped. We at Happy Dogs Training are very keen advocates at ensuring that your dog is well mannered in public. This means that your dog should come back when called, should not jump up or bark at passersby or chase joggers or cyclists. Special caution should be exercised when dogs are near children unknown to them, even a friendly well socialised dog should not run up, jump or try to snatch any toys children may be playing with. You may know that your dog means no harm, but an unknown dog running up to a stranger can be very frightening. Many owners I have worked with have had very bad experiences when their dog has done something inappropriate in public and they have received a ticking off by a passerby. Receiving some good quality one to one training in the place where you have had your bad experiences should solve any problems that you have, and also bolster your dog handling confidence. Passivhaus standard homes in Fareham Many of us would like to reduce our impact on the environment – so wouldn’t it be great if your home itself made it easier to be green!

We’re made up with the place and can’t wait to make it our own.” Six new properties with a difference have been built in Fareham. The homes in Allotment Road, Sarisbury Green, have been built to the Passivhaus standard – meaning they have state of the art eco heating systems. This means because of the actual design of the house (eg the location of the windows, use of solar energy and the thickness of the walls) there is little need to turn on the heating even in winter. As a result the properties have much lower carbon emissions than most other homes. The properties are now being rented to families on the Council’s housing list. Nicola was among the first to move in to one, along with her partner and three year daughter. Nicola had previously been on the Council’s waiting list for three years and she told us their new home has changed their lives: “We were all living in a one bedroom property before so my daughter couldn’t have her own

The new homes were built by Interserve, and funded by Fareham Borough Council with help from the Home and Communities Agency’s Affordable Homes Programme. The Council now hopes the project will set the standard for future house building in the Borough and help to reduce the area’s environmental footprint – all while providing much needed homes for local families.

Honeybee Swarms A sudden swarm of swirling bees and an accompanying roar is one of nature’s wonders. For many it is a frightening experience to have a cloud of bees descend on their garden. the honey on which they gorged themselves before leaving the hive), a decision will often be made. When that happens, the whole cluster takes off and flies to it. Even so only 24% of swarms will survive their first winter unless collected by a beekeeper. If you do see a swarm contact a local beekeeper or your local beekeeper’s association. Beekeepers check their hives each week for signs of swarming.If found they deploy various techniques to delay or prevent a swarm. Normally by dividing the colony before it swarms. No one really knows what triggers a colony of bees to decide to swarm as not all colonies swarm every year. When the hive gets ready to swarm the workers guide the queen to lay eggs into wax cups made by the workers. They look like acorn cups. New queens are raised and the colony normally swarms as soon as the queen cells are capped and before the new virgin queens emerge from their queen cells. That’s when about 60% of the bees and the old queen leave the hive. The workers gorge on honey before leaving and do not present a threat to anyone. They are more intent on finding and setting up a new home elsewhere than stinging you. Mind you I would advise anyone to keep clear, go inside and close all doors and windows. A laying queen is too heavy to fly long distances. Therefore, the workers will stop feeding her before the anticipated swarm date and the queen will stop laying eggs. During the swarm preparation, scout bees will simply find a nearby location for the swarm to cluster. When a honey bee swarm emerges from a hive they do not fly far at first. They may gather in a tree or on a branch only a few yards from the hive. There, they cluster about the queen and send scout bees out to find suitable new nest locations. They will normally leave within a few hours to a suitable location. An individual scout returning to the cluster promotes a location she has found. She uses a dance similar to the waggle dance to indicate direction and distance to others in the cluster. The more excited she is about her findings the more excitedly she dances. If she can persuade other scouts to check out the location she found, they may take off, check out the proposed site and promote the site further upon their return. Several different sites may be promoted by different scouts at first. After several hours and sometimes days, slowly a favourite location emerges from this decision making process. Roger Taylor of ‘Queen’ joins Wickham Festival line-up Rock legend Roger Taylor of ‘Queen’ is the latest star name confirmed for this year’s Wickham Festival. The Queen drummer will perform Queen tracks and classic rock anthems when he appears with The SAS Band (Spike’s All-Stars) on Saturday 6th August. Also appearing with The SAS Band will be former Marillion vocalist Fish plus Toyah, Madeline Bell of ‘Blue Mink’ fame and other star guests to be announced. Founded by renowned musician and musical director, Spike Edney, THE SAS BAND (Spike’s All Stars) is the “Ultimate All-Star Band” featuring world class musicians and some of the world’s greatest Rock artists.

Astronaut Tim Peake set to return June 2016 Tim Peake’s journey to the International Space Station (ISS) is a true testament to the staggering advances of modern science and has inspired the nation. But how exactly did he get there? The image below demonstrates the separation and ignition sequences reaching orbital phase, ready to dock on to the ISS, which travels in orbit around Earth at a speed of roughly 17,150 mph (about 5 miles per second). Orbiting the Earth at such speed means that Tim witness the sunrise once every 92 minutes.

exploration missions. They are also running numerous educational activities from space, including the ‘Inspiring Young Lives’ program. Tim and his crewmates, Tim Kopra and Yuri Malenchenko, will continue to carry out an intensive schedule of European and international experiments until his return to Earth on 18 June. They will then be replaced by three more astronauts who will move into the ISS after the trio have touched down back on terra firma. Tim said: Although I am looking forward to being back on Earth and seeing friends and family again, each day spent living in space is a huge privilege and there is much work to do onboard the International Space Station. This extension will keep the ISS at a full crew of six for several days longer – enabling us to accomplish more scientific research. And, of course, I get to enjoy the beautiful view of planet Earth for a little while longer!

Rendezvous and docking with the space station are automated by the on-board computer, which keeps track of the positions of the Soyuz and ISS, using measurements from mission control and radar. Crew members closely monitor the process, and can intervene or take over manual control if required. Tim and his team are using the unique environment of space to run experiments, as well as trying out new technologies for future human

Tim has scheduled a command to start opening the hooks and latches that hold the Soyuz to the ISS, which will be issued when the crew are ready to return to Earth. The spacecraft then separates from the space station at a speed of 10cm/s (4ins/s). Once the Soyuz has reached a distance of 20m (66ft), it will fire it’s thrusters for 15 seconds. When the capsule reaches a distance of 19km (12mi) from the ISS, the Soyuz will make it’s main “de-orbit burn” and the engines for 4 minutes and 21 seconds to begin the return to Earth. The descent module carrying the crew will then separate from the empty orbital module which burns up in the atmosphere.

About 15 minutes before landing, the capsule will deploy a drogue parachute to slow its descent speed from 230m/s (755 ft/s) to 80m/s (262 ft/s). The main parachute will be released, cutting the capsule’s speed to 7 m/s (24ft/s) and shifting it to a vertical position. Six engines fire on the underside of the capsule to cushion the craft just before it thuds down on the Kazakh steppe. A recovery and rescue team will then arrive to extract the crew members, which means that Tim will have spent 6 months and 3 days in total on the ISS, having launched on 15 December 2015. When Tim returns, he will head straight to the European Astronaut Centre in Cologne, Germany, for check-ups and examinations to inform research into how his body has adapted to living in the microgravity environment of space. The next Soyuz launch is set for 21 June 2016, three days after Tim leaves. The next ESA astronaut will be Frenchman Thomas Pesquet, who will head to the ISS for his Proxima mission in November 2016. UK Space Agency to hold Principia Schools Conferences Portsmouth University

the students’ work and the opportunity to meet and talk to experts from the space industry and the Principia education programmes. Tim Peake will be in attendance at both events, subject to operational requirements. In addition to the conference days, each University will also be hosting an accompanying day of workshops and talks which participants can also attend. The conferences will be free of charge, with travel bursaries available to help schools with the cost of travelling to the venues.

How to Apply: Individuals or groups of young people of school age are able to apply, through a competitive process, to come to the conferences and present/exhibit their work by submitting a summary of their project(s). A judging panel, made up of representatives from some of the Principia education projects, will select those that demonstrate high levels of commitment, dedication and creativity. Some or all of the pupils involved in the projects will be invited to attend one of the conferences. There is no limit on the size of group that submits an application (it could be an individual, a small group, an extracurricular group, a class, a whole school etc.), but if the application is successful, a maximum of 6 children with up to 2 accompanying adults will be able to attend.

The UK Space Agency is organising two conferences for school pupils in November 2016. The conferences will give young people the opportunity to present their work, linked to Tim Peake’s Principia mission to leading experts from industry and education. The conferences will be held at the University of Portsmouth on Wednesday 2nd November, and the University of York on Saturday 5th November. The days will include keynote talks from leading figures, presentations from the students, exhibition of

Hampshire Search and Rescue â&#x20AC;&#x201C; we need people like YOU! Search and rescue is not just the domain of helicopters and Mountain Rescue teams. Did you know that Hampshire has its own search and rescue team? Hampshire Search and Rescue (HANTSAR), a registered charity, is one of many Lowland Rescue teams which provide professionally trained volunteers to assist the police with searches for vulnerable missing people (such as children or the elderly or despondent). We are well-equipped, with a control vehicle, a support van and the necessary computer and communications equipment to run an effective search.

We are called by the police when they need extra assistance in searching for a high risk missing person. A callout is initiated and members start heading out to a rendezvous point where we set up our command post.

One of our Search Planners will decide which areas need to be searched and which have highest priority. This is a skilled task which takes into account missing person behaviour statistics as well as personal information about the person who is missing.

Searchers are then divided into teams of between three to six people, each with a Team Leader. The teams are dispatched to their areas where they begin searching. There are two possible outcomes: either the missing person is found or, having completed the search of their area, the team reports back to the control vehicle for re-assignment. Our members come from all walks of life and there is no upper age limit. The only requirement to be considered for operational membership is that you are 18 or over and able to walk at least five miles in two hours. We are available for callout 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, whatever the weather. In 2015 we were called upon for assistance 53 times. Callouts occur at any time of day but of course not everyone is able to attend every time. We train four times a month in order to maintain and improve our competences in skills such as search techniques, first aid, navigation, radio operation, scene of crime procedures and river bank searching. We are totally dependent on donations for our running costs and hold regular collection days and fundraising events. The Flying Lovers of Vitebsk comes to the Nuffield

On Tuesday 5 July to Saturday 9 July, The Flying Lovers of Vitebsk will be showing at the Nuffield Theatre in Southampton. Emma Rice directs Marc Antolin and Audrey Brisson as Marc and Bella Chagall in Daniel Jamieson’s The Flying Lovers of Vitebsk, a dazzling and evocative play vividly drawn from the early life of the artist Marc Chagall. This new production will open at Bristol Old Vic on 2 June 2016 as part of the Theatre’s 250th Anniversary season of work, a. This co-production celebrates the special relationship between Kneehigh and Bristol Old Vic which has spanned nearly three decades. Summer Activities Guide Sunday Gun Firings: 19th, 26th June, 21st August, 11th September. Fort Nelson. Free. Fort Nelson is one of a few places where you can experience live black-powder firings of historic artillery pieces. On selected Sundays throughout the year there are special firings, featuring authentic gun drills by uniformed detachments from Portsdown Artillery Volunteers. The crews will be available after the firings to talk about the guns and their history. Guns are fired at: 11.30am, 2.00pm and 3.00pm. These events are free and everyone is welcome.

HMS Collingwood Open Day: 4th June. HMS Collingwood. The most spectacular event will take place at HMS Collingwood, Fareham, Hampshire when the establishment opens its gates for the annual Open Day, featuring the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity (RNRMC) Field Gun Competition. The Field Gun competition will feature crews from across the UK and as far afield as Gibraltar competing for the coveted Brickwoods Trophy. The competition is fast, furious and requires 18-man teams to run, dismantle, reassemble and fire the gun in the shortest possible time. During the Open Day there will be attractions, entertainment and displays designed to capture the imagination of everyone from 8 to 80. Attractions will include the Tigers Motorcycle Display Team, plus an extensive recruitment zone with interactive activities and much more. There will also be a ship open to the visitors’ area where you will be wowed with some of the training equipment used by today’s Navy. Experience Royal Navy training first hand in the Bridge Simulator which will allow you to simulate taking a ship into harbour. The gates will open at 9.30am, there will be free parking, free buses from the local area and FREE FUN FAIR – all you need is to come along and join us for this amazing day, happy in the knowledge that once you pay your entrance fee all attractions and entertainment is FREE.

HMS Sultan Summer Show: 18th and 19th June. Military Road, Gosport. The HMS Sultan Summer Show will return again as the perfect entertainment for Father’s day weekend. The D-Day Revival Weekend will include talks from renowned military historians of the Second World War, Dr Peter Caddick-Adams and Stephen Prince. Dr Caddick-Adams is an author, broadcaster and documentary maker who will talk about Normandy 44 and the Battle beyond D-Day. Mr Prince is the head of the Naval Historical Branch and will shed light on Operation Neptune, the landing operations during the Allied invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944. Other events include a 1940s dance, a military vehicles display, a period funfair in Squire’s Paddock and a Battle of Britain Memorial Flight fly-past. The fly-past will include the Hurricane, Spitfire and Lancaster, and other authentic military vehicles will be on display at the village. Armed Forces Day: 25th June. Fawley Parish Council. Free. Armed Forces Day is celebrated up and down the country on the last Saturday of every June. Armed Forces Day is designed for armed forces personnel and their families to spend valuable time together. This is a way for the general public to show their appreciation for the sacrifices the Armed Forces personal make. There will be a marquee placed central of the event which will contain re-enactors and live music for everyone to enjoy. This will include local bands such as the big town boppers. As well as live acts and shows, there will be a fun fair attending as well as a bouncy world, which includes bouncy castles, ball pits and inflatable assault courses. Different regiments will be attending in full uniform and bringing with them different types of army vehicles, such as armoured ferrets and stormer tanks. The RAF will be flying over the event in a Dakota fighter plane. Along with the armed forces, the local emergency services will be bringing vehicles to the day. This is great for all the young children who attend and get the chance to sit in a real fire truck or police car. This is fabulous event and best all it is FREE for anyone to attend and enjoy.

Let them burn off some energy on the balance beams, crawl nets and tire walks. Stay and play all day. Calling all gardeners, crafters, artists and bakers! The Sarisbury Green Horticultural Society will host the 69th annual show on Saturday 13th August at the Sarisbury Green Community Centre. The show is designed to be a fun place in which to showcase local talent. Entries are invited from all age groups and from novice to expert alike. There is a special junior section with lots of variety, however, many of the talented youth are more than capable of taking on the oldies, especially in art and photography. Community News Bears Sighted on Hamble Common! Bears have been sighted on Hamble Common but while they are from Canada they are not the furry kind. The Hamble Conservation Volunteers assist Eastleigh Borough Council preserve the Common and one of the tasks is to ensure that it does not turn into a forest. Open heathland is unnatural and is the result of thousands of years of human intervention but the ancient techniques of fire, grazing and peat removal are no longer practical and we need alternatives ways of removing fast growing saplings. We have to be selective as gorse and the occasional oak tree are part of the heathland landscape so each sapling, mainly silver birch, needs to be targeted individually. Until now we have handcut the saplings and then treated the remaining stumps with root killer but we have been on the lookout for methods that would remove the need to use toxic chemicals. After considerable research we identified a specialist handtool originating in Canada with the catchy name Pullerbear. It is essentially a very large lever with a set of jaws that grasp the sapling near the ground and applies sufficient force to pull it up with its roots intact.

It is still a manual task requiring some strength to unearth the roots but it is a well thought out tool that does not require excessive force risking injury. The new tools had a very successful first outing and we are very grateful for the grant donated to us by Hampshire County Council for their purchase. It would be wrong to leave you with the impression sapling clearance is our only preoccupation, we are also involved, for example, in maintaining Hamble Common’s numerous paths and twice a month we carry out beach cleaning.
