The Scents of Summer With the height of summer comes the garden brimming with plants and shrubs that not only bring colour to our borders but also fills the air with rich heady fragrances. From the light sweet scents of lavender, rosemary, sweet peas, phlox, lilacs and nicotiana to the more pungent aroma of the curry plant, there is nothing quite like an intoxicating aroma that stops you in mid tracks as you stroll past a flower border. Fascinating still, there are many plants that only release their scent at night, and these include the bewitchingly sweet aroma and honey like fragrance of night-scented stocks and the Evening Primrose. Then there is the enchantingly named Lady-of-the Night that releases its scent as soon as night falls and instantly disappears as the sun rises! It is an evergreen woody shrub that is a native of Cuba and a member of the potato family. It is best to grow it in a pot so you can move it indoors during the harsher months of winter. Perhaps one of the most distinctive and underrated perfumed plants of summer belongs to the Philadelphus, which is so very often erroneously referred to as a Syringa. The simplest way to avoid confusion is to remember Syringas belong to the olive family and perhaps rather surprisingly, the Philadelphus to the Saxifrages. Anyway, its clusters of snowy white blooms throw out a potent fragrance that is second to none, so grow it close to a path or gate to enjoy its luscious bouquet to the full. Additionally, most scented blooms are designed by Nature to attract bees and insects to help with pollination, so by choosing to plant them you will be adding your support to the all important topical issue of biodiversity. Happy scented days of summer! www.hambrooks.co.uk

Importance of vaccinating puppies and kittens Vaccines are the single most important preventative medicine that we have available to protect our pets. The moment we bring home a puppy or kitten we immediately commit ourselves to a lifetime of care. We have a responsibility to that puppy or kitten to protect it from pain, suffering, injury and disease. Today we have greater opportunities than ever to ensure our furbabies lead long and healthy lives. One of the most important areas of preventative health care is the immunisation against viral and bacterial infections. We’ve all heard of Distemper and Cat Influenza; the former usually causing death, the latter commonly leaving long term health complications. These diseases are only the tip of the iceberg! However modern vaccines for our pets are better than they have ever been before; protecting our pets young and old, helping to prevent the spread of infectious diseases in the community. At Heathside we use a cutting edge vaccine called Versican (DHPPi/ L4) where by puppies start their vaccinations at 6 weeks old with a follow up vaccine 3-4 weeks later, with a full booster at 12months old. A full vaccination does not need to be given for three years (this covers for Distemper, Parvovirus, Hepatitis) however Leptospirosis and Para Influenza are still required annually. Kittens are vaccinated from 9 weeks of age with a booster 3-4weeks later, revaccination is required annually. Once again Heathside use Fevaxyn Pentofel that immunise against the five major diseases in the cat. Visiting your vet early in the life of your pet gives your vet the chance to give your pet a thorough medical check and to advise on vaccination and parasite control (fleas and worms). At Heathside we practice preventative medicine with the ultimate aim to help keep your puppy, kitten, dog or cat fit and healthy for a long happy and active life. Join our Healthy Pet Club to spread the cost of annual health care. If you have any questions do feel free to call 01489 607001.

Knitwear Designer to Pitch Her Business to Instagram Following Awards Shortlist Knitwear designer and founder of Sprig Knitwear Antonia Sullivan will be pitching her business to a panel of industry experts from Instagram, Pinterest and Etsy, as part of the highly-regarded Mollie Makes Handmade Awards. Antonia, who works from her studio at The Sorting Office in Eastleigh, is one of three people shortlisted for an award in the Start-Up category, having seen off strong competition from hundreds of entrants. The annual awards are intended to celebrate and support good craftsmanship and creative entrepreneurship. To apply, designers had to create a Pinterest board of their work and send it to the judges. Speaking about being shortlisted, Antonia said: “I was really surprised because there were a lot of really good people who had entered. “I’d been keeping an eye on Pinterest to see who’d been entering, and I thought I probably won’t get it because there are a lot of talented people.” The awards event is to take place on July 7 at The Proud Archivist gallery in London, where Antonia and the other finalists will pitch their businesses to the panel of experts, before finding out whether or not they have won.

The prize for the winning competitor in the Start-Up category includes a stand at the popular Crafty Fox Market in London, a Business Starter Package to advertise in Mollie Makes, and an exclusive six-week online training course with The Design Trust.

Officers Scout Opportunity to Help A class of System Engineering and Management Course students currently under training at HMS Collingwood, Fareham recently took time out of their training schedules to help the 1st Catisfield Scout Group revive their Scout Hut. Six members of the course were involved with cutting and clearing overgrown areas within the grounds to create an enhanced outdoor area for the scouts. The team restored the onsite fire pit and also helped with reorganizing the Scout’s equipment stores.

Group Scout Leader, Rose ‘Foggy’ Fogwill, said of the officers visit “Not many Scout groups have their own land, so we are very lucky, however it is difficult to maintain as we are all volunteers and a lot of us have full time jobs. Having the Royal Navy’s assistance with this project has been brilliant and has really helped in terms of resources. We are very much looking forward to continuing our relationship with HMS Collingwood in the future!” Currently 100 children and young adults attend the 1st Catisfield Scout Group; providing fun and challenging activities, experiences and adventure for individuals aged 6 to 25. As the biggest Scout group in the area, 1st Catisfield Scout Group currently accommodate Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Explorers and Network, covering all ages and focusing on developing skills including team work, time management, leadership, communication and commitment. 10 | The LOOP

The 1st Catisfield Scouts Group are now looking forward to continuing refurbishments throughout the hut and surrounding land, welcoming new volunteers to get involved in any way they can. The Royal Navy officers, who are currently training to qualify as Deputy Weapon Engineers, took advantage of a day that had been assigned for them to conduct a Community Project by supporting this event. Community Projects are one way for personnel at the establishment to engage with the local community whilst at the same time supporting a good cause.

Manual Therapy

What is Physiotherapy Physiotherapy is a healthcare profession promoting wellness, mobility and independence in its patients. Whatever the problem, be it physical injury, illness or disease, physiotherapy helps encourage and facilitate recovery on a person to person basis. Physiotherapists help patients to maintain movement and function throughout and after sickness or surgery. What Physiotherapy Do Physiotherapist conduct a comprehensive physical assessment of every patient, considering the body as a whole rather than the specific aspects of an injury or illness. They use a wide range of techniques working with people of all ages to regain as much mobility and function as possible. Some of the main approaches covered by Physiotherapist include: Education and advice Physiotherapists can give patients general advice on problems that may affect our day to day activities. They will inform the patients about injury prevention techniques, such as how to maintain proper posture and the correct ways to lift and carry heavier items without inflicting damage. They can also advise on pain management where certain home remedies like heat and ice applications may be beneficial. Movement, tailored exercise and physical activity advice As a new patient, the physiotherapist will ask a series of questions relating to the injury or illness. They will also learn about the patient, finding out a little about their background, hobbies and what their job entails so as to understand exactly what level the patient needs to back to in order to resume their activities. Once an assessment has taken place, the physiotherapist can advise on what course of treatment will optimise recovery. This may include specific exercises intended to alleviate pain in the affected area, or help strengthen different parts of the body.

In manual therapy a Physiotherapist will use their hand, applying certain massage techniques to help relieve pain and stiffness in joints. Soft tissue manipulation may be used to relax and loosen any of the muscles affected by injury or illness. In certain situations, specialised treatment like acupuncture may be used. Why Physiotherapy Physiotherapy is a degree-based healthcare profession requiring years of training to qualify as a practitioner. Throughout their training Physiotherapists study a wide range of conditions affecting the various systems within the body. These include: Neurological This deals with disorders involving the brain, spine and nervous system. Many patients seek physio treatment to help with neurological diseases such as Parkinson’s, Multiple Sclerosis and strokes. Physiotherapy is key in these situations, helping regain the mobility often lost after suffering from these conditions. Musculoskeletal This is an area that deals with joint and muscular problems. Physiotherapists will often advise and treat a patient for back pain, whiplash, sport related injuries and arthritis where pain management is a large factor. Cardiovascular This covers any heart related conditions like Heart disease and aiding with rehabilitation after a heart attack. Respiratory Physiotherapist can help, assess and treat anyone suffering from disorders often respiratory system which affects the lungs and breathing. These issues include Asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and cystic fibrosis. Physiotherapist can go on to work in specialise in a variety of sectors within health and social care. Many physiotherapists work within different departments of the NHS, while others go on to private practice or specialise in sports care or paediatrics.

Fareham Nomads were represented by Ellen Jewell, Hannah Cooper, Joe Davies and Matthew Sullivan. Coach Stewart Crowe said: “Between them they competed in 12 events over two days of competition. “It was 14-year old Matthew Sullivan that became the only medal winner from the group, he claimed a bronze medal in the 200m Backstroke in a personal best time of 2.23.18, a small improvement on the time he set in the heat which was also a personal best time. “Matt has also qualified for ASA Summer National Championships for the Boys 14 years 200m Backstroke, a delightful result.” Sullivan also set best times for the 200m Individual Medley, 100m Backstroke and 400m Freestyle. The youngest of the group, 11-year-old Ellen Jewell showed her promise by claiming a place in the 11/12 years 100m freestyle final in a personal best time of 1.06.40, she will be competing in this age group in 2017. She also set best times in the 50m Backstroke and 50m Butterfly. Health & Fitness Are you a binge eater? Frank Mangna; known as Mr FunkyFit is a motivator, personal trainer, fitness writer and the owner of Studio Red Fitness in Southampton.

Are you gaining weight? Binge eating usually leads to rapid, excessive weight gain and possibly obesity. Obesity then causes numerous other complicated medical conditions which end up leaving you with personality disorders, anxious, stressed and depressed. Weight gain and obesity have some serious implications on health. Carrying too much fat can lead to serious health problems such as cardiovascular disease and many more other conditions mentioned earlier in this article. These risky health problems usually start when someone is slightly overweight and increase as you become more and more heavier.

How do you stop binge eating?

What is binge eating? Every single one of us will overeat at some point on one occasion or another, it could be on holiday, a birthday party or even that odd favourite meal. We will have seconds, thirds and lots of desert after. When this type of eating behaviour becomes a regular occurrence it can be easily characterized as binge eating. Some binge eaters will eat too much food too fast and not even enjoy or register the taste of the food there’re eating. In this article I look at the characteristics of a binge eater and how they can control their eating habits.

Are you a binge eater? The main behavioural symptoms of binge eaters are compulsive overeating. The signs to look out for are; eating continuously throughout the day outside planned meal times, never feeling satisfied after a decent meal no matter how much you eat, eating even when you’re full, eating large amounts of food, hiding food to eat secretly later, lack of control when it comes to stopping and controlling what you’re eating. You might also feel stress or tension that can only be relieved by eating. However with all these symptoms it takes a number of different reasons for someone to develop the binge eating habit or disorder. There are social and cultural reasons, personal experiences, Psychological reasons, genetics and different emotions can contribute towards binge eating.

How does binge eating affect you? Binge eating has a lot of elements to it. The binge eater might feel upset, stressed or even depressed and then they resort to binge eating for comfort. This becomes an uncontrollable habit which leads to many complicated problems. Most binge eaters will feel guilty and disgusted with themselves after a compulsive binge eating episode. This then leads to them worrying about their lack of control. The binge eater then gets depressed and then goes back to comfort eating in order to feel better, then feels worse instead. This becomes a vicious cycle causing them to gain weight and have problems like high blood pressure, osteoarthritis, type 2 diabetes, gallbladder disease, Joint and muscle pain, gastrointestinal problems, sleep apnea, high cholesterol, heart disease and many more. 22 | The LOOP

contactus@loopmagazine.net

As we now understand that becoming a binge eater can be associated with personal experiences, different emotions, genetics, social, cultural and psychological reasons. The main solution has to be focused on helping you to stop eating too much. The first thing to do is to learn and identify what type of foods trigger your binge eating episode and then remove them from your diet. By removing your temptations you’ll find yourself having to think about other ways of making yourself feel good, try physical activities/exercise. This is one of the best proven ways of diverting your mind as it helps to raise your self esteem, get fitter, improve your moods and it’s a great way to escape the temptations while achieving good results. Try to stick to three structured meals everyday and force yourself to only eat at the right times regardless how hungry you are. Be healthy and try to keep your food temptations clear off sight and well away from your cupboard and fridge. Stay positive! Contact Mr FunkyFit; studiored@frankfitnesstrainer.co.uk

From Rubbish To Racing – You’d never believe it!! Jim Gildea started a waste removal service approximately 10 years ago, aptly named ‘Rubbish Clearance and Waste Removal, a title which says it all! When Jim began providing this service it was just himself, a Nissan Serena van, and endless pounding the pavements of Fareham, Gosport, Stubbington, Hill Head, Portchester, right through to Portsmouth, putting leaflets through letterboxes, and when his phone rang he took the call, go do the job, and start leafleting again afterwards from where he had left off!

‘Scenes of Crime 0fficers’, when tasked by the ‘National Academy of Crime Scene Cleaners’ with whom Jim has trained and been equipped and licensed by). Also, training from Killgerm UK, certification in health and safety, data handling and currently ongoing asbestos handling and removing course work has greatly expanded the services now Rubbish Clearance and Waste Removal are able to provide, ‘new vans but the same old friends are still with me!’

This was followed over time with a website, rubbishclearanceandwasteremoval.co.uk, and adverts in local magazines. – ‘I have been advertising in this magazine since its beginning, and also dealing with any trade waste as and when needed!’ Over the last ten years, the business has expanded and led Jim to places and opportunities he had never dreamt of, in so far as his hopes and expectations were concerned when he began this business venture nearly 10 years ago! Over time Jim was able to take on a couple of friends to help out, which led to being able to take on bigger jobs, which led to bigger vans, more friends involved, more jobs…..a busy spiral of an increasing workload etc, and has removed and dealt with just about everything you can imagine…. This being the case, Jim decided to invest in training and equipment, which has led to now being the local crime / trauma scene cleaner, on occasions going in behind Hampshire Police’s

So, with a customer base, a good reputation – ‘not claiming we are perfect by the way’, and working 7 days a week usually, Jim found himself at Brands Hatch last month, as sponsors of the ‘Quattro Plant Kawasaki Sidecar Team’, under their branded services ‘Total Waste Removal’, and just last week on Sky’s Property TV show as their invited waste expert discussing waste issues for the home buyer and property investor! ‘It all started from pounding the pavements putting leaflets through letterboxes and a £700 Nissan van, and it shows where hard work and a bit of imagination can lead, and while I’m sure I’m far from perfect, I’m proud with what my friends and I have achieved, and that we are now in our first year of trading as a limited company, but always the priority remains the same, looking after the local people who pay our wages year in year out, and providing the best service we can…….’ ‘Many thanks to all that have hired us over the years,’ – Jim Gildea

Cloud storage can be defined as “the storage of data online”. This data can then be accessed from various platforms. Most cloud storage options have apps on Windows, Apple and Android devices, so you can save a document online and access it from anywhere (providing you are online). This makes cloud storage ideal for sharing and backing up your files. Apple iCloud iCloud connects you and your Apple devices in amazing ways. iCloud Photo and iCloud Library and iCloud Drive keep all your photos, videos and documents stored securely and updated everywhere. With iCloud you always have what’s most important to you, on whatever device you have at hand. You get up to 5GB of free storage in iCloud, and you have the option to choose a plan for up to 1TB for £6.99/month. Google Drive Drive starts you with 15GB of free Google online storage, so you can keep photos, stories, designs, drawings, recordings, videos – anything. Your files in Drive can be reached from any smartphone, tablet or computer. So wherever you go, your files follow. You get 15GB free storage with Google, but can pay for additional storage. 1TB works out at around £7/month. Microsoft’s OneDrive Get to your files from anywhere, on any device with Microsoft OneDrive. OneDrive is pre-installed on Windows 10, and it works great on all of your devices. Access and share files and photos on PC, Mac, Android and iOS. You can collaborate with Word, Excel, Powerpoint and OneNote from your desktop, mobile device, and the web. OneDrive offers 5GB free, with the option of 50GB for $1.99(£1.50)/month. However, if you subscribe to Office 365 which is £5.99/month you get 1TB worth of storage as well as getting Word, Excel and PowerPoint. DropBox Get to all your files from anywhere, on any device, and share them with anyone. Save your files on your computer, then access them on your phone from the road. Everything you keep in DropBox is automatically synced to all your devices. DropBox comes with 2GB of free storage, you can upgrade to DropBox Pro for £7.99/month which gives you 1TB LiveDrive This is what we at Hypersonic use to back up all of our data, without any limit on space. LiveDrive automatically backs up your files securely online. It constantly monitors your files as you work and backs them up as soon as you save them. You can easily download your files from the web at any time, or restore files using the LiveDrive recovery app. Your LiveDrive account has unlimited storage too, so no matter how many files you have, there is enough space. This works out at £38+VAT/year for unlimited storage. If you are interested in LiveDrive, feel free to contact us here at Hypersonic. We are always more than happy to help! Don’t forget that you can always contact us for free impartial advice. Rainbow Fun Day makes a splash! A local charity held a fun day to celebrate and raise funds for the vital work they do to help children and adults with disabilities. The Rainbow Centre, in Fareham hosted their third annual Family Fun Day and Dog Show at the Centre, which is based in Cams Alders Recreation Ground. Despite the thunder, lightning and torrential downpours spirits were not dampened as hundreds of families still turned up to support the event which raised just over £3500. The dog show, judged by Tina’s Dog Grooming and Mrs Fareham Galaxy, Jodie O’Keefe, was postponed so man and his best friend could take shelter when the heavens opened. Many people opted to head inside the Rainbow Centre, including Mayor of Fareham Councillor Connie Hockley, whilst others chose to huddle inside the huge inflatable pub, which served beer, cider, wine and Pimm’s.

CEO Lara Bull said: “Our annual Fun Day is an excellent way to raise awareness and to give the local community a chance to see exactly what the Rainbow Centre does. We had a brilliant day despite the weather and would like to thank absolutely everyone that has been involved and helped to make the event happen. Fingers crossed for more sunshine next year”.

When the showers stopped the dog show recommenced and children of all ages queued up to have go on the impressive eighty-five foot inflatable assault course, which was sponsored by Basepoint Gosport. Other attractions on the day included fete style games and activities, Locks Heath Classic Car Club, Frozen and Minion characters as well as Giddy Up Parties who provided pony rides and the Peculiar Encounters petting zoo. The charity were lucky to be joined by Victory Squadron from nearby HMS Collingwood who helped to set up and man stalls throughout the event.

Jacks of London kicks off at new venue The future of English football met the future of sharp barbering as Jacks of London celebrated the opening in Southampton of its latest venue. More than 150 guests packed the stylish new Jacks of London premises on Above Bar Street for a party that kicked off a weekend of special events at Jacks, coinciding with the opening games in the Euro 2016 championships. Prominent faces included local Under-18s footballing rising star Harvey Read. After two seasons in the Southampton youth squad, Harvey recently transferred to Stoke City, where he is now a squad-mate of Jacks of London’s recently signed brand ambassador, Stoke and England goalie Jack Butland.

Already a leading name in men’s grooming around the M25 area, with barbershops in Guildford, Kingston and Wimbledon, Jacks is one of the smartest barbering brands to come out of London. For the weekend ahead, visitors to Jacks can enjoy beer-tasting and beard-trimming sessions, with special introductory prices on cuts, shaves and Jacks’ famed D-tox face service. As well as handing out complimentary Jacks goodie bags, containing a selection of Jacks own-brand True Gent products, Jacks will also be launching its ‘Win the Ultimate Jacks Day Out’ competition for one lucky winner and five of his mates worth over £1,000. #jacksdayout Jacks recently confirmed its premiership gents’ grooming status by signing up England and Stoke City goalkeeper Jack Butland as the face of the brand. And this month will see a hand-picked team of Jacks barbers, including those from Southampton, servicing the world’s tennis elite at the Aegon Championships at Queen’s in London. Nuffield announces start of a new three year programme to unlock the arts for Southampton’s children development of thousands of children across the UK. We are delighted to be working with Artswork and Nuffield to provide these opportunities for children in Southampton.” From the beginning, Nuffield will work with the teachers to build Start into their curriculum planning so that it’s an integral part of the school year. Teachers participating in Start will be given special training, new and exciting teaching resources and provided with creative ‘CPD’ opportunities. In the first year the children will be invited to see one of Nuffield’s productions and through pre- and post-show workshops in the theatre and in class, will explore the themes of the show and reflect on the production and their experience of live theatre. Embedded within the programme will be the opportunity for the children to achieve either an Explore or Discover level arts award.

Nuffield is pleased to announce that it will begin a new major education programme with children from Southampton’s Primary Schools in the Autumn. The three-year Start programme created by leading education charity, Children & the Arts and supported with investment from Artswork, the South East Bridge will complement and build on the success of Nuffield’s existing education programme with local secondary schools. With the appointment of Rupert Rowbotham in the new role of Head of Engagement in January this year, and plans underway to expand into the new city centre venue Studio 144 in 2017, Nuffield has embarked on a mission to encourage greater use of the theatre by local schools and Southampton’s diverse communities. “We are Southampton’s leading producing theatre company, and want to bring in the broadest cross section of audiences to discover and enjoy our work. Start will allow us to share the excitement and experience of live theatre more broadly, by advancing the reach of our existing education work. This will transform our relationships with those local primary schools, teachers, children and families that are part of the programme,” said Rupert Rowbotham. The plan is to work with nearly 500 Year 3 and 4 children (ages 8-9) from ten primary schools across Southampton. The schools will be confirmed over the next couple of months and the programme will begin in the Autumn term. The three-year Start programme partners arts venues with local schools to offer children opportunities to engage in arts activities that inspire and challenge them and enhance their experience of the arts. Over the past decade Children & the Arts has worked with nearly 400,000 children and young people. Jeremy Newton, Chief Executive of Children & the Arts, explains that Start takes learning beyond the classroom, to new and exciting environments, such as Nuffield: “The Start programme reaches out to the many children in the UK who are denied the opportunity to engage with the arts, whether that’s due to geographical or economic reasons. Start shows that local theatres, museums, galleries and concert halls, are places that they are allowed to visit, places where they can experience and learn something new, and most of all, places that they can enjoy.

“I am thrilled for the Nuffield that we’ve been awarded this prestigious funding. Start is such a good name for it, because it really does all start from programmes like this; this year Nuffield will take nearly 500 children to see two pieces of theatre. The first of these will be to our biggest family show so far ‘The Fantastic Mr Fox’, which will be a Southampton World Premier. I am so excited for them!,” said Rupert Rowbotham. “As a flagship producing theatre, Nuffield has the ability to not only offer children an opportunity to explore great quality arts but also life-enhancing skills and experiences. Artswork is really pleased to be supporting Nuffield to enhance their offer to children and teachers. We look forward to learning and sharing the impact for all involved over the next three years,” Jane Bryant, Chief Executive, Artswork.

Education Wyvern College Wyvern College continues to flourish as an inspiring and highly successful educational establishment. Students have enjoyed a range of events this year including the annual production, Vocal Festival, GCSE Art Exhibition, Careers Week, and a superb Arts Festival showcasing the talents of students in music, art, drama and dance. Various trips have enriched learning and enabled students to experience other countries. Year 7 students put their language skills into practice during a recent trip to France, Year 9 History students had a poignant visit to the WW2 Battlefields, and Year 9 and 10 students discovered the geographical wonders of Iceland. Local destinations have included the Natural History Museum, the Globe Theatre, and the Weald and Downland Museum. During the last year, the College has won the Hampshire Schools’ County Football Championships, achieved third place in the Rock Challenge competition, and scooped three category awards at the CISCO Little Big Bang event. In addition, the College’s Head of Maths received a Silver Teaching Award in the national Pearson Teaching Awards. The Wyvern 10K Race celebrated its fifth anniversary, achieving its aim of becoming a true Olympic legacy event. Students are also encouraged to become participative citizens with some training as Reading Ambassadors to support younger students, others taking part in the prestigious Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, and some representing the College in local community events. To find out more, visit the annual Open Evening on Thursday 22 September or join an escorted Admission Tour during the school day in September and October. Enterprising students present winning pitch to West Quay A team of five students from The Henry Cort Community College participated in The Watermark Challenge hosted by West Quay, Hammerson PLC and Education Business Partnership (EBP). The students; Myah Ojla (14), Kate Woolford (13), Matthew Steward (13), Annie Jenner (13) and Daniel De Roure (14) were all invited by the EBP to be involved in the launch of the new Watermark development at West Quay in Southampton along with other local schools. The students were presented with a business brief ahead of the launch on 3 February 2016. The brief was to capture the interest of the student population of Southampton, Hammerson PLC would like to hold an event that promotes the new Watermark development as a destination and as an employer. The event should be appealing to students of Southampton and Solent Universities and be held at the end of September or beginning of October 2016. They were told that the use of the public realm as well as potential partnerships with the restaurants who will be occupying the units would be available as part of the event. Presentations had to be submitted by 3 March with finalists being notified the following week. The team along with students from St George Catholic College and Chamberlayne College for the Arts both of Southampton, were selected as finalists and were invited to the management offices of West Quay in Southampton to pitch their plans in the boardroom. The Henry Cort team presented a portfolio to each member of the board and the students delivered a powerful pitch which led to them winning overall and receiving West Quay gift vouchers as their prize. Mrs Claudia Cubbage, Principal, said: “I am very proud of all the students who took part. The feedback from the organisers was superb. Enterprise is one of the College’s four pillars of excellence and I am always looking for opportunities for students to be able to put their ideas into action in real life contexts.”

The Mary Rose After six months of work, and weeks of testing all of the environmental systems, the Mary Rose Museum are proud to announce that they will be reopening on 20th July 2016. Before sinking in 1545, the Mary Rose saw 34 years of service as Henry VIII’s flagship. Built in Portsmouth, the Mary Rose was launched in 1511. She sank during an engagement with a French invasion fleet just two kilometres from the entrance to Portsmouth Harbour.

Visitors to the new-look Mary Rose Museum will see stunning panoramic views of the ship from all 9 galleries through floorto-ceiling glazing on the lower and main Decks. On the Upper Deck, they will breathe the same air as Henry VIII’s warship for the first time in 23 years, with only a balcony between them and the hull. Approximately 19,000 artefacts have been recovered from the wreck site so far. it has taken over 30 years to excavate. Many artefacts have to be kept within environmentally controlled conditions to prevent them disintegrating. For the first time since she was raised from the Solent in 1982 visitors can now share the same space as the Mary Rose, entering the Upper Deck through an air lock, allowing you to experience the full splendour and magnitude of the Mary Rose. The only 16th century warship on display in the world, the Mary Rose has been under-going continuous conservation since she was raised in 1982. The hull was first sprayed with a mist of fresh chilled water and then with a water soluble wax from 1994. In April 2013 the Mary Rose entered a stage of controlled air-drying. The hull has now reached a stable state within this drying process which allows the black drying ducts to be removed. This lets you to see the Mary Rose in all her glory, unobstructed for the first time in over 34 years! The Museum run special events throughout the year, with exhibits, talks and occasions for every audience. From talks by leading academics and historians through to fun family days out, you’ll find plenty to come and enjoy.

Soon after the Mary Rose sunk, divers were hired to try and recover the ship and guns, but to no avail. The world had to wait until 1982 for the hull to be raised, as well as the the majority of her artefacts to be recovered. Now, 437 years after the ship sunk this rare treasure of England will be on full display at the Museum in Portsmouth.

The story of the Mary Rose spans almost 500 years. This year the Museum will welcome visitors from all over the World who want to learn more out more about the ship, her crew and the thousands of artefacts that have been recovered from the wreck site since the 1970s. This is an exciting moment in the history of the Mary Rose, as the only surviving 16th Century Warship this will be a unique Tudor experience.

Get on the Water with the RYA’s Summer of Sailing From the history-making British Sailing Team sailors racing for gold on the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic waters, to the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series arriving in Portsmouth in July and the adventure of the Swallows and Amazons remake released in August, inspiration to get afloat will be everywhere this summer including Hampshire. Following the recent success of Push the Boat Out, the RYA are offering a whole summer of sailing with even more opportunities for everyone to go sailing whether you’ve never done it before or are returning back into the sport.

Free sailing and windsurfing taster sessions One of the easiest ways you can have a go is at one of the 40 venues across the country which will be running free ‘try sailing and windsurfing’ taster sessions this summer. Portsmouth Watersports Centre will be opening their doors on 07 August with sessions running all day with their welcoming and qualified instructors. This event is open to anyone over 7 years old and people of all abilities.

At each event you can discover what it’s like to go sailing with free taster sessions and then watch the drama unfold with sailing medal races shown on big screens. There’s no better place to cheer on your local sailing hero!

You can also have a go on the Isle of Wight at the Royal Victoria Yacht Club on 10 September. From 10-4 the club is offering experiences on a variety of different boats including yachts, keelboats and dinghies with food and refreshments available throughout the day. Both events have free parking on site.

Members of the British Sailing Team will also be on hand at events with inside knowledge on all the action in Rio as well as advice on how you can get into sailing and maybe start your own Olympic journey.

RYA Sail for Gold Roadshow

The Royal Lymington Yacht Club and the Lymington Town Sailing Club will be joining forces to host the event when it arrives in on 15 August to cheer on the hopes of local British Sailing Team member Nick Thomson in the Laser class and Alison Young who will be competing in the Laser Radial at Rio.

Celebrate the 2016 Games this summer with the RYA Sail for Gold Roadshow. Launched by members of the British Sailing Team, the Roadshow will visit venues across the UK that have a special connection to our Olympic medal contenders.

Lymington Town SC are running free sailing taster sessions throughout the day which can be booked in advance and are hoping to attract a great crowd to the waterfront to celebrate their sailing heroes.

Find out more information and to book onto taster sessions visit www.rya.org.uk/go/trysailing

Be part of the summer of sailing So if you’re looking for a new way to get your family outdoors and active, leaving the stress of daily life behind on the shore then why not be part of this huge summer of sailing. “Sailing often carries this unfair misconception as being inaccessible and expensive, the reality could not be further from the truth and we want to prove that to the public this summer” explains RYA Director of Sport Development Duncan Truswell. “Many sailing venues have recently benefitted from substantial investment to improve their facilities and have boats and equipment available so newcomers can get on the water without needing to buy their own kit.”

After you’ve had a go, why not stay on and enjoy the medal races which will be shown at 5pm at the Royal Lymington Yacht Club.

There’s plenty of great places to sail in Hampshire so why not discover how you can get out on the water near you. Start your sailing adventure at www.rya.org.uk/go/startboating

To find out more information about the event and to book your taster session visit www.rya.org.uk/roadshow

Bart’s Bash Over the weekend of 17-18 September, sailors across the County will hit the water to take part in Bart’s Bash. The global sailing event sees thousands of sailors from around the world remember double Olympic medallist Andrew ‘Bart’ Simpson, whilst having a great day out on the water with friends and family. This year, Bart’s Bash is working with the RYA to raise money for disabled sailing. As the event coincides with the end of the Rio 2016 Paralympic sailing event it provides a fantastic opportunity for sailors and clubs to show their support for the team and help even more disabled people to get on the water in Bart’s memory. Countdown to the 10th Anniversary National Watersports Festival – one month to go! It is just two months to the start of the Rio Olympics, but if you can’t make Brazil, how about an amazing carnival atmosphere, fancy dress and a beach-side setting, complete with racing and Olympic medallists… but a little closer to home? It is only one month to the start of the National Watersports Festival, which takes place at Hayling Island on 2-4th September 2016, with up to 500 competitors and around 10,000 spectators expected to make the annual pilgrimage. Widely held to be the birthplace of windsurfing, Hayling Island is where a 12 year old Peter Chilvers first took to the water with a sail fixed to a board in 1958. It is, therefore, a most fitting location to hold what is now the largest, multi-disciplinary watersports festival in the UK. The National Watersports Festival has become a much-loved and unmissable annual event - and this year, the Festival is bigger and better than ever, as it is celebrating its 10th Anniversary! The NWF concept has always been a fun watersports event, which caters for the majority of watersports people – i.e. non-professional, recreational Windsurfers and SUP (Stand Up Paddleboarders). There are fun races, open to participants of all ages and on any type of equipment. There are also taster sessions for those who wish to try one of the sports for the first time and free clinics, run by top professionals, for those looking to improve. The past 10 years has attracted the very elite world champion and Olympic names, who have joined in with the festival and competed or simply soaked up the incredible atmosphere that the event elicits. Among them, windsurfers Nick Dempsey and Bryony Shaw, who will be representing Team GB in Rio, although you can also expect a host of World Champions, World Record Holders and Top Professional Coaches. Over the years, the size and scope of the event has grown very markedly. Event Organiser Allan Cross wants to attract a record number of competitors and has promised a spectacular weekend of on and off-water activities, which will keep the whole family entertained from the minute they enter the Festival site. “This year we want to deliver a weekend that raises the bar on previous years.” says Allan. “We’ve got a number of things up our sleeve that will make this a must-attend event for both competitors and spectators alike.” 62 | The LOOP

Live music has always been a big attraction at the NWF - and this year there will be more. Lots more! The awesome beach parties in a marquee right on the shoreline are not to be missed, but to add to the Festival vibe, there will be live music throughout the day, with a diverse range of talent and styles, both local and from further afield. The NWF Trade Show has now become the largest of its type in the country – as shiny new toys are always good to look at! All the major windsurf and SUP manufactures will be there with their latest equipment, offering expert advice to those looking to get kitted out or upgrade. There is also a wide variety of artisan stands to browse and delicious food stalls. Would you like to take part in The World Bathtub Racing Championships? Or what about trying Bonga Balance Boards, SUP Tug o’ War, SUP Polo and PugilSUP? Green Dragon Activities will be at the NWF with all of this and more. The precise mix of activities will depend on the weather, but expect anything from Archery to Zorbs via Climbing Walls, Bungee Trampolines and Inflatables. To see the sort of thing, check out www.greendragonactivities.co.uk It was 10 years ago that the Festival started the iconic Night Windsurf and the festival would not be the same without the spectacular, floodlit night event. Amateurs can win the opportunity to compete in the night races alongside some of the biggest names in windsurfing. There is also a spectacular, floodlit Freestyle demonstration just feet from the shore, with some of the most talented team riders and professionals from the World Tour. Then - it’s time to party… If you are passionate about watersports or just want an enjoyable beach weekend with entertainment for all the family, get those dates in your diary, book your place early and wait for the fun to begin! For further information, see www.nationalwatersportsfestival.com or follow NWF on Facebook.

Also, have you ever noticed the difference in shade of colour of the grout at the very edge of the room, which should be almost as new and the grout in the middle of the floor? It can be surprising how, even with regular mopping, the grout always looks dirty. Why? Because the grout channel attracts dirt which mopping often glides over. No problem, they can even re-co|our the grout for you from a range of subtle colours. The Air Training Corps 2016 marks the 75th Anniversary of The Air Training Corps. The Corps has come a long way in 75 years, with now over 35,000 members including females, ranging from 12yrs (year 8) to 20yrs old. We are no longer a recruitment method for the RAF, but we still stick to our original values. To promote and encourage an interest in aviation and the Royal Air Force. To provide training which will be useful in the Services and Civilian Life. To encourage the spirit of adventure and develop qualities of leadership and good citizenship.

Hampshire and Isle Of Wight Wing consists of 24 Squadrons with 1000 cadets spread throughout the counties, stretching from Ryde in the South to Aldershot in the North. The Wing offers an extensive syllabus of training and activities. These include Flying, First Aid, Leadership (ILM), Music, Sports, Drill, Radio Communications, Entry Level Health and Safety and teaches up to A-level standard in physics, BTECs in Aviation Studies and Music. The Air cadets is the largest promotor of the Duke Of Edinburgh Award, which is the world’s leading youth achievement award, encouraging our cadets to be the very best that they can be, with over 100 Cadets expected to gain their Bronze award this year alone. We run numerous weekly camps each year, including Adventure Training in The Lake District, a Military Field Training Camp in Kent, Royal Air Force Camps in the UK and Abroad. These are in addition to the national camps run by our National Headquarters which include Drill, Skiing, QAIC (Qualified Aerospace Instructor Course) and STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Maths). To celebrate the 75th Anniversary Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wing will be holding a celebratory Parade and Service in Romsey, and taking part in the National Air Cadet Torch Relay which sees an emblem of the organisation being relayed around the country being passed on from Wing to Wing. Already we have held an awards evening celebrating the success and dedication of our cadets and adult volunteers. Our sport teams have come 1st in Athletics, 1st in Netball and 3rd in Football, Rugby and Hockey.

Stagecoach Stagecoach Fareham has been running for over 13 years and in that time the school has had the privilege to develop some wonderful talents. Each week over 100 students aged 6-18 attend our Main Stages classes held in Whiteley Primary School and receive an hours training of each of the three disciplines of singing, dancing and drama by teachers, all of whom have a background in performing professionally. We also offer Early Stages classes for 4-6 year olds which provides them with 30 minutes introductory training in each discipline. Taking classes in singing, dance and drama has been proven to build a child’s self-esteem and confidence, giving them skills they can use to only in performance but in everyday life. We pride ourselves on helping each child develop at their own pace and providing a friendly environment where children can learn, develop and most of all have fun. Over the years our students have performed in many theatres including The Mayflower Theatre in Southampton, Kings Theatre in Southsea and Her Majesty’s Theatre in London’s West End. This December, 16 students are making the trip to The Phoenix Theatre in London to take part in Stagecoach’s Annual Charity Gala, an invitation only event celebrating some of the best ‘stand out’ performances over the course of the year, highlighting students’ achievements whilst raising money for Charity. The group of students aged 10-16 will be performing an 8-minute piece including songs from the musical Annie that they first performed at Her Majesty’s Theatre in November 2015. During the Summer Holiday’s our ever popular summer workshop will be running from 8th-12th August with children aged 6-16 being invited to attend The High School Hop and learning songs and dance routines from Grease. Our Early Stages workshop, aimed at 4-6 year olds, will be taking a trip to a magical kingdom and meeting Rapunzel. You don’t have to be a regular Stagecoach student to attend our Summer Workshops so it is a great way to dip your toe into the world of musical theatre. Our highly energetic and enthusiastic coaches love meeting new students each Summer and the workshop is a week of guaranteed fun!

We are also pleased to announce the opening of a brand new Thursday night school at Bridgemary School in Gosport. Lessons for 6-18 year olds will take place from 5pm-8pm with Early Stages for ages 4-6 running from 4.30pm-6.00pm. We have assembled a team of highly skilled teachers for all disciplines and open our new school during our Show Term meaning students will get the full Stagecoach experience straight away. All students of our new Thursday night school will also be able to audition, alongside our Saturday students, for the chance to perform at Shaftesbury Theatre, London next April 2017! If you would like any more information on weekly classes or our Summer Workshop, please visit www.stagecoach.co.uk/fareham or call 01489 666323 and speak to Principal Vanessa!

Nomads Were Master Class at County Event Fareham Nomads swimmers won an incredible 41 gold, 20 silver and eight bronze medals at the Hampshire Masters County Championships. Some 18 members of Fareham Nomads competed at the event on 19 June at the Mountbatten Centre in Portsmouth, just two years after the Masters squad was formed. The squad looked to improve on their seventh place in 2014 and fifth place in 2015, and did not disappoint with their 89 personal best times from 106 events to place second overall behind Basingstoke. Head coach John Molyneaux said: “The swimmers were master class and to place second was a brilliant achievement. “It was a challenging target competing against 15 other clubs, many of whom have very strong established Masters squad over many years. “The Masters squad is friendly bunch of all ages and abilities. It was fantastic to see the swimmers supporting and cheering each other on, as well as children coming along to watch their parents swim.” Much was expected of those that competed at the recent European Masters Championships, particularly championship winners, Joanna Corben and John Molyneaux, who between them won 15 gold and four silver medals at the local competition. Corben, who entered 10 individual events, was by far the most successful swimmer in the 45–49 age group and although expected to win the backstroke events also gained valuable points for the team in the breaststroke, butterfly, freestyle and the individual medley. The clubs’ newly appointed head coach John Molyneaux led by example chipping in with seven individual gold medals showing his all-round ability in the 25–29 age group. He won gold medals in the 50 and 100 backstroke, 50 and 100 butterfly, 50 breaststroke, 50 freestyle and the 100m individual medley. Teammate and wife Laura Molyneaux helped the cause with five gold and five silver medals to add to her successful outing at

the European Masters Championships. Another of the European squad also impressed, Noemie Peignon, who was in fine form and competed over some of her weaker events winning gold in the 100m breaststroke, 100m backstroke and individual medley. She also added a further two gold and two silver medals to the team’s effort. The youngest member of the squad, Jess Davies, competed in the 18–24 years age group, which she dominated with six gold medals from her six events. The teams eldest competitor Phil Disley, competing in the 50-54 years, was another to be in great shape winning five gold and three silver medals. Triple Gold medal wins came from Paul Rowan together with two silver and one bronze in the 35-39 year age group. Stuart Wass, another member of the squad to return to swimming after a long time out of the water, had a great weekend with an impressive 100 freestyle, achieving a very respectable gold medal time of 56.02. Wass also won two silver medals behind Molyneaux in the 50m Back and 50m Freestyle. Claire Tagg, another of the European Masters team competed in the same age group as Jo Corben and was successful in winning four silver and one bronze. Other medal winning performances came from Clive Marquis with one bronze, Ian Dickson with two silver, Andy Green with three bronze and Dan Alberts with two bronze in individual events. Valuable points were also added to the total with minor placings from Gemma Knipe, Ruth Bannister, Michael Andrews, Vince Hewitt and Lisa Mortimore. Mixed relay medals were also achieved with Nomads claiming silvers in the 72+ years 100m medley team, as well as silvers in the 72+ and 120+ 100m freestyle team events. Molyneaux added: “The weakness within the Nomads squad was that the oldest swimmer entered was in the 50–54 years age group, so we did not have any swimmers old enough to challenge the medals in the 55 years plus age categories.”

About Fareham Nomads Swimming Club Fareham Nomads Swimming Club (FNSC) is a competitive swimming club affiliated to the Amateur Swimming Association (ASA), ASA South East Region and Hampshire County ASA (HCASA). Our goals are: 1. To ensure that everyone has the opportunity to learn to swim. 2. To ensure that every member can achieve their personal goal within the sport. 3. To ensure that every member has the opportunity to compete. To achieve these aims, the club has professional coaches to supervise our competitive squads and our learn to swim program. Under their guidance and direction, the club's swimmers are able to compete successfully in many competitions in the ASA Southern Region including Leagues, Galas and Open Meets, together with additional non-league and Novice Galas to provide competitive opportunities across all levels of ability. Our swimmers also compete at County, Regional, National and International levels with notable success. The club is accredited to Swim 21 - it has reached the tough standards laid down by the National Governing Body (the ASA) for swimming clubs. Fareham Nomads Swimming Club is also a recognised Community Amateur Sports Club (CASC) which has been achieved because the club is open to the whole local community without any discrimination. The Club was formed in 1974 before there was a public swimming pool in Fareham. Due to the lack of a home pool the club took its' name because in the early days it led a 'nomadic' existence, using various pools throughout the area for training until 1980 when Fareham Leisure Centre was opened. Since then, the Club has grown considerably and today has a membership of around 250 children and young adults. The club runs a learn to swim scheme to provide lessons for young children who either cannot swim or have taken the first steps to learn with lessons being held on a Monday and Friday evening at Fareham Leisure Centre between 6:00pm and 8:30pm using the small shallow teaching pool. Once a swimmer is competent to swim 25 metres then they will advance to lessons in the main swimming pool. Here they will be taught by qualified teachers to develop their skills further and build up their stamina. Fareham Nomads is a competitive swimming club and provides competitive opportunities for swimmers from novice up to national standards. The club has 6 competitive squads plus a new Masters squad to develop swimmers from novice level up to national competition standard. Sample the flavours of Hampshire at Hamble’s Festival of Food this September On 3rd September, Hampshire Farmers’ Markets will be returning to Hamble’s Foreshore Car Park from 10am to 4pm for the village’s Festival of Food. “Around 30 of our producers will be setting up shop for the day,” says Alex Handford, business manager at Hampshire Farmers’ Markets (HFM). “At the last event celebrating St George’s Day in April there was a great turnout and everyone said it was a brilliant day out. We’re hoping this means even more people will come along to see us on the 3rd’”

Back in April, it was the first time producer Cupcakes ‘mmm Cookies had attended a Hampshire Farmers’ Market at Hamble and their delicious treats certainly proved too tempting for some. “I’m really looking forward to this September’s festival,” says owner Tracy Burns. “Our cupcakes and cookies are all freshly baked with lots of different flavours for those who love sweet things. I certainly don’t feel like I’m a new member of Hampshire Farmers’ Markets as everyone has been so welcoming and friendly - I can’t wait for lots more markets,” she continues.

As an addition to the festival, on the quayside there will also be music from St. Andrew’s Pipe Band, face painting, JJ’s cider tasting and Bursledon Brickworks will be putting on activities for children. Best of all, parking is free. The village’s pubs and restaurants have produced special menus and will be getting involved with events throughout the day, including The Bugle, who will be offering tastings from their stand on the quayside.

Just some of the other Hampshire producers you will find on the day include the award-winning Ambrose Sausages, as well as New House Venison and Game, both of whom will be selling meat perfect for that last minute end-of-summer barbecue. If it’s new plants for your garden you’re after, then make sure you visit Fernlea Nurseries’ stand, or Whinwhistle Nursery and Cutting Garden. For freshly baked artisan bread, The Flour Stall will have lots of loaves on offer, plus those hooked on seafood will be keen to see what’s available from Catch Isle of Wight and Kerri’s Catch. Plus, as well as cupcakes and cookies, there will be more sweet delights from Fordingbridge Fudge, Michelle Mason Chocolates and cakes from Beceries. 76 | The LOOP

SS Shieldhall is marking the 1000th anniversary of King Canute being crowned King of the English at Southampton (1016) on Sunday 14 August, with a 3 hour cruise down Southampton Water and into the Solent (3pm – 6pm). On board will be Viking re-enactor group ‘Manaraefan’, with hands on opportunities for families including the trying on of helmets and swords, and playing of contemporary games including ‘Hnefatafl’, a strategy game which has similarities to chess. There will also be weaving demonstrations presented by the group, who will all be wearing Viking clothing presenting some great photographic opportunities! King Canute is closely associated with Southampton – it is where he is said to have ordered the waves to go back – and there are many buildings that have taken his name, most famously Canute Chambers, home to the White Star Line, on Canute Road. As a special summer promotion, Shieldhall will be welcoming children free of charge on the cruise (up to 6 per adult) – the perfect opportunity for families to spend some quality time on the water! Children will receive a Shieldhall passport around the ship, where they can visit volunteers in the Engine Room, Boiler Room and Bridge, collecting stickers as they go.

On her return to port, Shieldhall will pass the departing cruise ships Celebrity Eclipse and Seven Seas Voyager, always an opportunity to sound the Shieldhall whistle and sirens as the ships acknowledge one another in time-honoured tradition! Shieldhall will continue her summer programme by sailing to Poole on Mon 15 August, where she will be based for one week. During this time she can be visited alongside Poole Quay, from where she will visit the Bournemouth Air Festival on Fri 19, Sat 20 and Sun 21 August, before returning to Southampton on Mon 22 August. September continues the busy sailing programme for Shieldhall, with cruises from Southampton on each of the weekends 3 & 4, 10 & 11 and 17 & 18 September. For full details on all trips and tickets, please visit www.ss-shieldhall.co.uk or call 0844 357 2329 (calls cost 7p per minute from a landline, calls from mobile may vary).

Dive into the Blue Abyss UK company Blue Abyss Ltd. is gearing up to build the most comprehensive spaceflight training, research and Space hardware evaluation facility of its kind. The facility will house the world’s largest and deepest indoor pool at 50m (164ft) by 40m (131ft) by 50m (164ft) deep, alongside hyper and hypobaric chambers, the Kuehnegger Human Performance Centre, and a micro-gravity simulation suspension system for replicating the effects of weightlessness in Space. Tailored to support the training, research and development needs of the human spaceflight industry as well as the commercial diving and Remote Operated Vehicle sectors, Blue Abyss aims to become a ‘global asset’ according to CEO, John Vickers. As the Government’s ‘Star Trek’ Bill paves the way for commercial human spaceflight in the UK, Blue Abyss will be perfectly positioned to support Britain’s aim of capturing 10% of the world’s Space market by 2030. The facility will provide a safe and controlled environment to train humans for spaceflight. Neutral buoyancy training will offer the most incredible and realistic spaceflight experience to prepare ‘Space tourists’ for the rigours of launch and return to Earth, and the “microgravity” experienced during spaceflight. The same technique will be used to provide a valuable training tool for astronauts preparing for Space missions. Former NASA Astronaut and 7-time spacewalker Dr. Scott Parazynski, recently joined Blue Abyss as Non-Executive Director to advise and guide on 82 | The LOOP

neutral buoyancy training for astronauts and human physiology in extreme environments. Dr. Parazynski says: “Blue Abyss is uniquely positioned to provide a pioneering, state-of-the-art facility delivering ‘space-ready’ humans for flight. Moreover, Blue Abyss will have infinite opportunities to advance new Space and sub-sea technologies, helping the UK play a key role in the Space and Tech sectors globally.” Blue Abyss hope that the facility will have a place in everyone’s lives, not just for the fortunate few: gift experience packages will give the general public a taste of what it’s like to be in Space without the hefty price tag; and educators will be supported

Expected to be fully operational by mid-2018, this globally unique aquatic centre will be located on a 6-acre site at the University of Essex’s Knowledge Gateway Science Park, Colchester, providing: • Pool with multi-layered functionality including Hydrolab • Kuehnegger Human Performance Centre • Hypobaric and hyperbaric chambers • Microgravity Suite with traversable, full body suspension system • Amphitheatre & classrooms • On-site 120-bed hotel, cafeteria and parking Major Tim Peake, ESA Astronaut and Blue Abyss Consultant adds:

Tim Peake returns to Earth and sets his sights on the moon British ESA astronaut Tim Peake has returned to Earth after spending six months living and working on the International Space Station.

Astronaut Tim Peake said A human colony on the moon is the next “great ambition” for space exploration, in his first live television interview since blasting into space in December. A permanent research station would allow astronauts to investigate the challenges that will face astronauts on a manned mission to the Red Planet, including radiation exposure and energy production.

Tim Peake after landing. Credit: ESA–Stephane Corvaja, 2016. British European Space Agency astronaut Tim Peake returned safely in June 2016 to Earth alongside his crewmates Yuri Malenchenko and Tim Kopra after spending just over six months living and working on board the International Space Station. The crew landed at 10:15 BST in Kazakhstan after undocking from the station just under three and a half hours earlier. Tim spent most his time in space tending to many of the 250 or so experiments that are being carried out in the orbiting laboratory. He also carried out some demonstrations for educational activities and had enjoyed sharing his views of space with us. There are many highlights of his mission to choose from, but Tim said that the spacewalk he carried out, to replace a failed power unit, would be “etched in my memory forever”. 84 | The LOOP

contactus@loopmagazine.net

Peake added that a moon colony would be a valuable venture in and of itself, calling it a “wonderful place” to set up a research station. “There’s a huge amount that we’ve still yet to discover about the moon. It can tell us a lot of things about the origins of our own planet,” he said. “I hope that we see that as a next destination in itself and also as a stepping stone to Mars in the future.”

Journey to the Stars this Summer An exciting range of star shows is on offer this summer at the South Downs Planetarium in Chichester, located to the south of the City on the campus of the Chichester High Schools. We offer weekly riding sessions all year round at our Hampshire branch on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons, also Saturday mornings. These 20 minute riding sessions are designed to be fun for younger children, helping them to gain confidence in a safe environment without pressure. Our Shetland ponies are very appealing to small children and the session can consist of a countryside walk or a more structured lead rein lesson in the arena. Riding hats are provided. We also introduced a simple progress scheme, which has proved to be very popular, to recognise the achievements of our little riders and help them to progress in logical steps to more advanced riding and pony care when they are older. During the 20 minute session children can learn new things each week and collect stickers for each of 4 levels to earn rosettes and certificates! Book today for a 20 minute trial session for just £10!! McCaws Data Company Ltd McCaws Data Company Ltd opened the doors for business on the 18th April after nearly a year in planning. The idea for the business came about from a conversation with some solicitor friends who were bemoaning the increasing cost and space requirements for storing their dead files. This generated the concept of digitising the files, that is scanning and indexing the paperwork, and then shredding the hard copies. The striking McCaws logo is based on a bird that lives in Florida. Owned by friends, he is a master at shredding the paper on the bottom of his cage, we loved the idea of using him as a mascot. Based in Fareham we offer a service across the South coast from Bournemouth to Brighton and North as far as Aldershot. Our shredding service can accommodate customers who require either ‘one off’ purges or regular collections. Our scanning service is being tested and will become a commercial offering shortly as we complete our British Standards Certification to ISO 9001. Security is key and we have invested in state of the art logistics and tracking systems that will provide a full audit trail for our customers. A visit to our website will show you the detail of how this works. If you are subject to inspection by a regulatory body, such as the CQC, we can provide access to our web portal where you can view or download a history of when your confidential material was destroyed. We provide certification for each transaction.

A first time guide to Japan A country of contrasts, with its ancient traditions, state of the art technology, the most modern of cities, historic castles and stunning mountain scenery. Discovering this mix of wonders is a major part of what makes travelling here so appealing.

Where to go First of all, as with any destination where contrasts are a key attraction, it’s important to select an itinerary that allows you to explore these. For first-time visitors to Japan, a tour that incorporates the dazzling capital, Tokyo, taking in trips to Mount Fuji, Nikko and Kyoto is a good choice. This way, you’ll get to experience much that Japan has to offer in the way of culture. From Tokyo, there are many amazing day trips. One is to Nikko, the most famous attraction of which is its line of Jizo Buddhas, so old that they’re covered in moss. You can also go to Mount Fuji, which is one of the country’s most iconic sites. When it is time to leave Tokyo there is only one way to go, by bullet train, and where better to head for than Kyoto a city that really contrasts with Tokyo. Kyoto is home to an incredibly impressive 17 UNESCO World Heritage sites, as well as more than 2,000 Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines.

Slurp your noodles And finally, don’t be afraid to slurp your noodles. Dishes like ramen are virtually impossible to eat without at least a bit of slurping, and this is expected - in fact, it’s considered polite, because it shows that you’re enjoying your food!

The second show was the Abshot Variety Performance, where the acts were primarily amateur and novice entertainers. They were supported by a former professional, Brian Coshall; an impressionist who had previously appeared at the London Palladium and many other variety theatres in the UK and Australia. Brian was also a regular on television and radio in the 70s and 80s. Amongst the amateur acts were James Whitehead, a local, talented guitarist, playing his first ever solo performance and also providing backing for other acts, he definitely lived up to his Mum's description, “The intergalactic rock star before he was famous!. The performers from our local community included an 11 year old singer, Charlie Sewell, whose confidence, stage presence and singing ability showed a quality not often found in a performer so young, definitely a star of the future. Performances by the other talented, albeit more mature acts on stage, ranged from up to date covers of Adele songs to well known tunes by

Whitney Houston, Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra. The audience particularly enjoyed the Elton John and Kiki Dee duet by a pair who met through a local choir and performed as a duo together for the first time after only one real rehearsal. Sound, stage setting, lighting and furnishings were provided by volunteers from the association who used their skills and time to ensure that the show went ahead with the minimum hitches. The evening was a tremendous success, enjoyed by all those who attended and took part. The audience participation and enthusiasm was well received by the acts and most definitely helped to calm the nerves of the novices. The fact that there wasn't an empty seat in the centre was most notable and provides encouragement for the Abshot Community Centre to produce and deliver further entertainment in the future.

Fun, Low Cost and Local Days Out Fort Nelson

Royal Victoria Country Park

Fort Nelson is open every day except 24th, 25th and 26th December.

Open 8.00am–9.00pm March to October

Summer (April to October 10.00am - 5.00pm (last admission 4.00pm),

Open 8.00am–5.00pm November to February

Winter (November - March) 10.30am - 4.00pm (last admission 3.00pm).

Along the foreshore in Netley, Royal Victoria Country Park provides an excellent day out for those on a budget.

Fort Nelson is a historic fortification, rescued from dereliction and carefully restored. It commands spectacular views over Portsmouth Harbour to the south and the picturesque Meon Valley to the north. The Royal Armouries Museum was opened in 1984 for the first time, and today is one of the largest artillery museums in the UK.

For just the cost of parking (£4/day) we’ve got over 200 acres of beautiful woodland, grassland and foreshore. Why not bring a picnic for a family day out relaxing in the sunshine, playing games and exploring the myriad of woodland trails. There’s also plenty of scope for fun and adventure in our new accessible playground. For just a small price you could include a ride on the Royal Victoria Railway, the mini fun fayre or visit the Café for light meals, teas and ice creams. Did you know that the Park was the home of the world’s largest military hospital? All that remains is the Chapel in the centre of the Park. We’ve been lucky enough to be granted a Heritage lottery bid to help us cover the costs of revamping the chapel and its surrounds. The project has just begun and should be completed by September next year. You will then have the opportunity to visit our new exhibition and take tours to the top of the chapel tower. It’ll be well worth the wait!

Although a cliché, the phrase ‘must see’ truly applies to Fort Nelson’s astonishing collection of different artillery and guns from different time periods. Over 700 items of artillery from many countries and spanning 600 years are brought to life whilst sensitively telling the unique stories behind them. Set within 19 acres and featuring the Ramparts, Parade, eerie tunnels, restored barracks, museum galleries and Café 1871, the Fort is an exciting day out whatever the weather! Fort Nelson is one of a few places where visitors can experience live black-powder firings of historic artillery pieces daily at 1.00pm. contactus@loopmagazine.net

Hear’Say’s Noel Sullivan will lead the cast as the all-singing Prince Valliant , whose job it is to wake Princess Belle from her hundredyear sleep! Noel shot to stardom more 15 ago in Popstars – the TV series which put together the band Hear’Say and paved the way for other reality talent shows such as The X Factor. At just 20 years old he gave up his job in Wales as a waiter and moved to London and, along with other bandmates Myleen Klass, Kim Marsh, Suzanne Shaw and Danny Foster, Hear’Say’s debut track, Pure and Simple, became the fastest selling number one single in the UK at the time. Since the band split up in 2002 Noel has been a regular on TV, having made appearances in Gavin and Stacey, The Royal Variety Show and Trust Me I’m a Holiday Rep and he will once again be on our screens this autumn as a regular character in the second series of BBC hit drama Ordinary Lies, starring alongside EastEnders star Matt Di Angelo, Griff Rhys Jones, Angela Griffin and Jill Halfpenny! Noel is no stranger to the stage and has been in London’s West End starring as Danny Zuko in Grease and taking the lead roles in numerous national tours including Rock of Ages, Priscilla Queen of the Desert, We Will Rock You and most recently in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels which played Southampton’s Mayflower Theatre last November. From the team behind last year’s smash hit panto, join us for another spectacular Fareham pantomime full of music, laughter, amazing special effects and plenty of surprises. With swashbuckling Prince Valiant, dreams really can come true. Hannah helps Little Princess Trust

To be held at Ferneham Hall, Osborn Road, Fareham ,P016 7DB From Monday 19th September - Saturday 24th September

Hannah Browning, 17, from Titchfield Common had 22 inches of her hair cut off to support a charity which supports children who have lost their hair due to cancer treatment. Hannah, who attends Itchen College, heard about the work of the Little Princess Trust and decided to have her locks cut off to support the charity which helps children across the UK. Not only did she donate her hair to the charity she also raised over £140 in sponsorship. Hannah said “I have never had my hair this short before but it was really worthwhile as it is helping young people experiencing very difficult times. I am very grateful to everyone who has sponsored me”. Vanilla Rooms Hair and Beauty in Hedge End were more than happy to help Hannah and the charity by cutting her hair free of charge. Hannah’s mum Sarah Fawcett commented “I am really proud of Hannah; her kindness will hopefully encourage others to donate their hair to this fantastic cause”. The Little Princess Trust is a children’s cancer charity and their mission is to supply real hair wigs to children suffering with cancer, for the duration of their treatment. However, in addition they assist children with other conditions which also result in hair loss, the most common being alopecia. www.littleprincesses.org.uk/about-us
