Stars of the Autumn Garden With the mornings and evenings taking on that autumnal air, now is the time to put in your autumn bedding to allow the plants to become well established before the colder months appear. There is plenty on offer including winter pansies, violas, cyclamen and bedding dianthus. These come in a wide range of colours from the paler shades of white, pink and yellow to deeper darker hues of red, purple and blue.
Aster - Star of the border!
Autumn bedding will see you through the winter months for colour, but remember there are still plenty of herbaceous plants that look their best now. The Japanese Anemone has a lovely pale pink or white flower with a yellow centre and provides masses of blooms. It is such a fair flower, somehow it seems that it must surely belong in the borders at the height of summer rather than alongside the darker blooms of sedum, aster or golden rod. Asters also fill your borders with wonderful lilacs from lavender blue to white or hazy blue. These masses if tiny daisies are a real treasure at this time of year and it is no wonder that aster means ‘star’ in Latin.

Children’s Starlit Walk

Children will once again have the opportunity to take part in a special sponsored walk in aid of the Rowans Hospice on Thursday 27th October around Portsmouth Historic Dockyard and HM Naval Base. Renamed ‘Starlit Walk’ for 2016, event registration has opened online to coincide with the schools returning after the summer break.

The event, which takes place during the October half-term break, has proved very popular over the last six years raising thousands of pounds to support people living in Portsmouth and South East Hampshire affected by life-limiting illnesses.

The walk starts at 6.30pm and goes past HMS Victory which is illuminated in all her glory, into the Naval Base not normally open to the public and back to Boathouse No. 7 where all children receive a medal, snack and drink. For more of a challenge, there is a choice to walk the 1.5 mile route twice. Participants have the opportunity to light a candle in St. Ann’s Church in memory of someone special and to make a memory star to place on the memory board. Teresa Jeffery, In-memory Events Fundraiser at the Rowans Hospice, said: “Children love this event and so do all the volunteers who help. It has a great atmosphere with music and entertainment at the start and en route. Everyone is invited to dress up in something shiny, sparkly or bright and to make and decorate a mask if they wish. Come along and be a star!” It costs £5 to register a child and an accompanying adult can walk for free. For more information and to register online, visit www.rowanshospice.co.uk

Lord Mayor of Portsmouth When local boy David Fuller was elected Lord Mayor of Portsmouth on the 17th May this year, 51 years and 1 day to the date of his birth, his lifelong dream came true. Having struggled through his school years, he promised himself he would make amends by one day having a job that he could be proud of, and after a chance visit from a previous Lord Mayor, his sights were set: “A former Mayor of Portsmouth came and visited my secondary school one day and I remember thinking to myself, ‘I wouldn’t mind doing that one day’, and I look back now and I’ve achieved it. I need to pinch myself sometimes to make sure it’s real!” Councillor David Fuller has lived and worked in Portsmouth all of his life, and represents his hometown Fratton ward for the Liberal Democrat Party. As well as this the Lord Mayor is a devout member of the Freemason society, now in the role of ‘Almoner’, and is responsible for the well-being of lodge members and their families. Councillor Fuller said: “The aspect I love the most about being a Freemason is the feeling of togetherness - everyone working together and helping each other. I’m a very strong believer in everyone helping each other. We are not a secret society anymore, we need to come out more and be more visual in the community.” There is a total of 30 Lord Mayors across the country, and Cllr Fuller is one of the few that also possesses a full-time job in managing a residential care home for dementia sufferers in Cosham. His career up to this point has predominantly been in the care field, starting off as a weekend volunteer at the Harry Sotnick House, and has since been the manager of many successful care homes. Another big part of David’s life is his charity work. He explained: “Charity is also very important to me. I’ve supported previous Lord Mayors in putting on several big charity events at the King’s Theatre, so I had previous experience in working closely with Lord Mayors. When I worked with them I always thought to myself: ‘If I were Lord Mayor, how would I do things differently?’” Of course every Lord Mayor is different from the last, and they each bring their own expectations and goals to the role. For David, his

main objective is to get out on the streets and meet as many members of public he can. He said: “The main things I want to achieve during my time as Lord Mayor are to meet as many people as I can, and to promote Portsmouth to the world. Every Lord Mayor brings something different into the role with them. For me, I’m very much hands on, loud – but above all I’m a people person and I love my role as Lord Mayor because I get to meet so many different people and volunteers every day.” Councillor Fuller also stressed the importance of the many volunteers that operate across the city. He said: “In my opinion, without volunteers this city would grind to a halt. They are so important and are an essential part of the City. They work so hard, and that’s why I’m inviting as many as possible for high tea here at the Guildhall.” The appointment of David Fuller as Lord Mayor of Portsmouth has also brought his close family closer together. He chose his sister, Mrs Leza Tremorin, to be by his side as Lady Mayoress. David said of the appointment: “When my late Mother died of cancer at just 59, my sister and I started to grow apart a bit for some reason. So to have her alongside me as Lady Mayoress has been an absolute dream.” Having been influenced by another man in the same role as his, and with his priorities set on meeting as many members of public as he can, who knows if he will inspire another child to become a Lord Mayor of the near future.

Gifts for Christmas Are you looking for a gift that is a bit different? The perfect Christmas gift? How about ticking off something from the bucket list? Or a ‘taster’ before embarking on a PPL/NPPL course? The answer may be on your doorstep with a trial flying lesson. Phoenix Aviation is a CAA registered Flying School at Lee-on-Solent Airfield, offering trial lessons with its fully qualified and highly experienced flying instructors. From just £75 you, or the lucky recipient, could be learning to fly in a C42 Microlight ! Phoenix Aviation started operating from Lee-on-Solent Airfield in 2008, with a group of just a dozen private pilots and one leased aircraft. At that time the future of the Airfield was in doubt, and there were no facilities which could be used as a base for operations. Once the threat of imminent closure of the airfield was removed, Phoenix was able to locate into a portacabin, and purchase its first aircraft - a Piper PA28 Warrior. The Club’s activities were soon extended to include flying training for the Private Pilot’s licence, and further aircraft were purchased to accommodate a rapidly growing membership. The Club also branched out into microlight hire and training, using two new Ikarus C42 microlights. At the end of 2014, Phoenix moved into purpose-designed facilities on the second floor of the Control Tower, with excellent views across the airfield. P&O Cruises to build new 180,000 tons LNG-powered ship for delivery in 2020 Carnival Corporation & plc (NYSE/LSE: CCL; NYSE: CUK), the world’s largest leisure travel company, today signed a memorandum of agreement with leading German and Finnish shipbuilders Meyer Werft and Meyer Turku to deliver a next-generation cruise ship for P&O Cruises, the largest cruise ship to be built specifically for the British market. The new ship will exceed 180,000 gross tons and will accommodate approximately 5,200 guests (lower berths). Through an innovative use of space, the ship will offer an extensive range of dining, entertainment and relaxing features.
P&O Cruises senior vice president Paul Ludlow said: “These are very exciting times. The number of British passengers taking a cruise in the past five years has significantly increased, boosted most recently by our very successful launch of Britannia last year. We know there is still huge potential as more and more people realise the value for money, choice and range of dining and entertainment options available on ships of all sizes. With an amazing range of itineraries, from two days to three months, there is a cruise to suit every budget.
The ship will be built by Meyer Werft at its shipyard in Papenburg, Germany, with an expected delivery date in 2020 and will feature the company’s exclusive “green cruising” design as one of the first generation of cruise ships to be fully powered by Liquefied Natural Gas, shipping’s most advanced fuel technology, which will significantly reduce air emissions.
“P&O Cruises is uniquely experienced in designing ships to meet the specific needs and aspirations of British passengers and the agreement by Carnival Corporation & plc to build a new ship of this size reflects all that our guests and prospective cruisers have been telling us and shows our confidence in the growth of the UK market. “This ship will be the largest in the P&O Cruises fleet, will have a striking new exterior and interior design and will comprehensively embrace the company’s classic and iconic features. Innovative new guest experiences will be announced soon.” The new vessel will be the most environmentally efficient ship in P&O Cruises history. The ship’s “green cruising” design will use LNG to generate 100 percent of her power both in port and on the open sea, significantly reducing exhaust emissions to help protect the environment in support of the company’s sustainability goals.

Team Cross Country in aid of Jon Egging Trust “Fun, satisfaction, fresh air & exercise - the hobby you’ve always wanted!”
A team of students from East Midlands Universities Air Squadron recently completed a challenging cross-country cycle ride in aid of the Jon Egging Trust (JET) which concluded at HMS Collingwood in Fareham. With over 300 miles of road ahead of them, the team set off on their bikes from RAF Fylingdales in North Yorkshire. Their chosen route provided them with overnight stops at various MOD establishments along the way, allowing them to prepare for each day of intense cycling. The team took a total of 10 days to complete their journey from Yorkshire to Fareham. The challenge presented itself as a huge achievement for all involved as many had little previous interest or experience within any form of cycling, which was shown through the team’s celebration and relief when they reached the gates of HMS Collingwood.
Come and have a go - no prior experience necessary! Perfect for all ages - Men, Ladies, Juniors & Families. Selected dates & times at Cams Hall Estate Golf Club - from only £5pp - all equipment provided. For more information please call us on 01329 827222 or email camshall-pro@crown-golf.co.uk Cams Hall Estate Golf Club, Fareham PO16 8UP www.neweragolf.org www.camshallgolf.co.uk
One member of the team, Jake Butler, said: “We are all ecstatic and proud that we have accomplished this journey. The whole process has allowed us to pick up new skills, including modifying our route along the way to ensure the crew’s safety. We are also very grateful to have received help from the RAF Charitable Trust to fund the bikes for this challenge”. Ellie Orton, Interim CEO of JET, also added: “From now until 2019 we will be adding a new region each year. As we expand into new areas, fund raising efforts by our loyal supporters are more vital than ever to sustain our work nationwide. Many, many thanks to East Midlands University Air Squadron”. The JET is a charitable organisation which supports young people who find themselves in difficult circumstances, helping them to overcome adversity and achieve their full potential. They deliver accredited learning programmes to develop young people’s life and work skills by providing access to inspirational role models and life-changing opportunities linked to aviation, engineering and science. If you would like to get involved and support the team, then head to their Just Giving page: www.justgiving.com/fundraising/ East-Midlands-UAS. contactus@loopmagazine.net

Carl Warner Biography
they first think that it is a picture of a real place, and then when they look closely, they realise that everything is made of food.
Born in Liverpool England in 1963, Carl now lives in Kent and works from his London based studio near to London Bridge’s colourful food emporium of Borough Market.
My work is used to advertise different types of food and I have put all my pictures into a new book which will show all the secrets of how they were created.
Having worked as a photographer in the advertising business for 25 years Carl stumbled on the idea of making landscapes out of food just over ten years ago and these ‘Foodscapes’ have now brought him world wide acclaim for his very own unique and individual art form. This has led not only to many commissions for international clients such as Nestle, Unilever and General Mills, but also to a publishing deal with Abrams books which saw the launch of his first book ‘Carl Warner’s Food Landscapes’ in November 2010. His work has been used in children’s hospitals, childhood obesity clinics, by nutritionalists and many other good causes to promote better eating habits in both children and adults. Carl is has now completed his second book ‘A World of Food’ which will be for children and will feature poems which are also written by Carl, he is now starting to exhibit his work around the world to audiences both young and old who enjoy the ‘pleasant deception’ of his imagery and the escape to his gastronomic paradise.
Q&A Q. What is your job title? I am a photographer an artist and now an author. Q. Please explain what you do. I create landscapes and other scenes out of food and then I photograph them in my studio using special lights to make the scene look as real as possible, so that when people look at them

Why did you choose to do this job?
Q: Do you enjoy doing this job? Why?
Because I had an amazing talent and gift of being able to imagine things and I was always good at art. Photography is something that lets allows me the freedom to be creative and to make pictures for people to look at.
I love this job as I get to play with food and then eat it afterwards! It also gives me great satisfaction to see people look at my pictures and smile as they realise what they actually are.
Why is your job important? It is important because my work makes people smile and it inspires them to realise that human beings are capable of creating wonderful things.
This week I am building a chocolate train, but it is taking a very long time as I keep eating all the chocolate!

Q: What is the best and worst part of your job? The best part is when I look through my camera to see the final food landscape once it is all built, it makes me very happy to see the idea I had imagined come to life before me and this is a really great feeling. I also love eating the food afterwards, so I suppose that is just as good. The worst part of my job is working with yucky or smelly ingredients like fish, and doing all the washing up afterwards. Q: Please tell us about your most memorable or funny experience while doing this job. The most memorable experience was when I made a seascape out of fish. It took all day long and into the evening working with fish which were obviously very smelly, but because it took all day, we grew used to the smell, so when we went home we did not know how bad we smelt! So when my son picked me up from the station that evening he said I smelt so bad that he drove all the way home with his head out of the car window. So all the people I sat next to on the train must have suffered this fishy smelling man in silence!

Windows 10 – The Upgrade Continues...
Establishe d 1989
As you may be aware, the Windows 10 free upgrade offer finally expired on July 29th. Around 1 in 5 Windows PC users upgraded to Windows 10 during this offer! Which is a phenomenal statistic.
Carpet Fayre
Many people who did not do the upgrade were probably quite happy with their current version of the Windows operating system. But for anyone that missed the opportunity, or found that they could not upgrade due to hardware restrictions, worry not! There is still a way to get Windows 10 for free.
WE SUPPLY & FIT • Carpet • Vinyl • Wood Laminate • Solid Wood • Karndean Design Flooring • Refits, Repairs & Adaptations Undertaken • Made to Measure Blinds Plus a Selection of Rugs Available • Alternative Flooring
Microsoft have created a loophole in the upgrade for those people that use Assistive Technologies. These are tools that have been designed to help people that have disabilities to use Windows. For example the high-contrast colour settings, voice activation, and Narrator mode, that reads on screen text out loud. Before upgrading your PC, we recommend backing up your entire PC to protect your data, just in case anything happens during the upgrade process… (See the last edition of the LOOP for our article on Cloud Storage ;-) if you haven’t got an external hard drive) OK so to start the upgrade you’ll need to go to this website https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/accessibility/windows10upgrade
Click the download button, and that will download the Windows 10 Upgrade Assistant in your Downloads folder. Run that program, and you’ll be prompted to confirm that you wish to run it, click yes. The Windows 10 Upgrade Assistant will then pop up on your screen, and begin downloading the updates. This could take some time, depending on your internet speeds. When this process has finished, the Assistant will take you through a few additional options to complete the update, bear in mind that these can be changed after the Windows 10 upgrade.

Once you have gone through the options, your computer will restart and begin the Windows 10 installation. Will I need to prove that I have a disability? This offer is not limited to any specific assistive technologies and Microsoft does not request proof that you genuinely need them. Microsoft has also yet to disclose when this loophole will be closed, however, a post from Microsoft suggests that it might at some point start insisting that Windows users contact its Disability Answer Desk. within the incision, blood in the lungs, nutritional deficiency conditions like osteoporosis and anaemia, digestive problems, ulcers, a leak from the stomach into the abdominal cavity and many more. After rapid weight loss, you may notice muscle loss, excess or saggy skin, the more weight you lose, the more excess or saggy skin you will have. Access saggy skin will show on different parts of your body and this may lead to developing a low self esteem for the patient. The risk of complications are said to be lower in specialist centres that concentrate purely on these types of surgeries.
What happens after Surgery?
Why weight loss surgery? As fitness professional I feel that it’s important to share information about weight loss surgery. There are people out there who have been through the surgery and have managed to restore their lives. However there are some people who have found it extremely challenging to adjust to a new life after the surgery despite their weight loss results. Weight loss surgery is simply not for everyone and should be avoided at all costs. Weight loss surgery or (bariatric surgery) is used to treat people who are morbidly obese and in danger of serious medical conditions caused by excessive body fat. This type of surgery is only performed on people who have life threatening levels of obesity. People who have a body mass index (BMI) measuring over 35-40 and serious weight related health conditions are likely to be considered for this surgery. Weight loss surgery has proved to be effective in reducing excess body fat significantly quick in order to save lives. There are two well known types of weight loss surgeries, there’s the gastric band and the gastric bypass. However both the surgeries work well but can have complications if not conducted properly or if the post surgery instructions are not followed properly.
What is a gastric band?
Adapting to these two surgeries can prove to be difficult as the rapid changes from having a bigger stomach to a smaller one can make it hard for your body to get enough nutrients. You will get full more quickly when you eat, you will feel nauseated, shaky, weak and light headed, you will experience some belly pain and tender soreness to the incision after surgery. Your stomach will only handle liquids and small soft foods. You will experience irregular bowel movement; you will experience discomfort and nausea which will lead to vomiting. You won’t be able to over eat as this will lead to over stretching of your stomach. You may also end up taking vitamin and mineral supplements for the rest of your life. It is highly recommended that you see a dietician for the first few months so they can provide you with a healthy diet plan which consists of all the vital nutrients.
How to avoid weight loss surgery? As you may already know that prevention is better than cure weight loss surgery is not the easy way out. You will still need to do the dieting and exercising even after your surgery. It is important to recognise and deal with weight gain issues urgently. When your body mass index (BMI) is beyond the recommended 25 and you carry more fat than muscle, then you should know that it’s time to take action. If you have a problem with your eating or have an addiction to unhealthy food it’s highly recommended that you get some counselling or speak to a dietician or health professional. Do at least 30 minutes of physical activity a day which could be anything from walking to structured exercise. Try to join a gym and get some advice from Personal trainers and gym instructors. You can avoid these gruelling surgical solutions by just getting the right advice, changing your lifestyle and making the right choices. Start today! Contact Mr FunkyFit; studiored@frankfitnesstrainer.co.uk
The gastric band surgery involves reducing the amount of food you can hold at a time by putting an adjustable band around your stomach. The surgeon creates a small pouch in the stomach by dividing the stomach into a large and small portion. The small part of the stomach is stapled or sewn together to create a pouch which can only hold a cup full amount of food at a time. Because of the small stomach people get restricted to eating less enabling them to feel full quickly.
What is a gastric bypass? The gastric bypass surgery involves reducing the length of your digestive system and making your stomach smaller. The small stomach pouch is disconnected from the first part of the small intestine called the (duodenum) and then connected to a part of the small intestine farther below called the (jejunum). This is so that the food passes directly from the stomach into the jejunum bypassing the duodenum. This process holds back the absorption of nutrients and calories into the body.
Are these surgeries risky? All these surgeries are adapted to meet individual needs; however the patient must stick to the doctor’s instructions to prevent any major problems from happening. The patient may get infections contactus@loopmagazine.net

How Clean is Your Tile? Natural Stone, Porcelain and Ceramic tiles are beautiful to look at and are worth every penny of your investment! but what happens when they get dirty? Well, fear not for the Hampshire Tile Doctor is here to help. They offer free advice and free quotations on how to clean and restore any sort of natural stone, be it Marble, Travertine, Limestone, Terracotta, Slate, Victorian tiles, etc. Imagine your natural limestone entrance hall floor tiles, your terracotta or slate kitchen floor tiles, or your ceramic bathroom wall tiles, even your granite worktops and splash-backs being made to look as if they were freshly laid.

Also, have you ever noticed the difference in shade of colour of the grout at the very edge of the room, which should be almost as new and the grout in the middle of the floor? It can be surprising how, even with regular mopping, the grout always looks dirty. Why? Because the grout channel attracts dirt which mopping often glides over. So why not let The Tile Doctor clean the grout so it looks new again? The old days of mops and toothbrushes are gone forever! And what if the grout is also badly stained? No problem, they can even re-co|our the grout for you from a range of subtle colours. After the cleaning process they apply a professional coating of an impregnating sealer, which sinks into the tile and/or grout and gives an invisible protective barrier that will leave your floors so much easier to clean. Sadly, some tile fitters never seal the tiles or grout they lay, which means you could damage your floor by spilling some everyday products you have in your kitchen or bathroom. Let the Tile Doctor clean and protect for you. Call now 0800 695 695 9 or visit www.hampshireti|edoctor.co.uk, for a free ‘demo’!

Breast Cancer Haven – Your help through the toughest times A diagnosis of breast cancer can be frightening and the treatment gruelling. Surgery, hair loss, radiation, chemotherapy and medication can all take its toll. Medical treatment is necessary but people need so much more to get them through it. That is where Breast Cancer Haven comes in. From our centre based in Titchfield we support women, men and their families throughout the Wessex region and help them to cope with the debilitating effects of treatment and the emotional toll of living with the breast cancer. Our support is free of charge and available to anyone affected by breast cancer – whatever stage they are at, wherever they are in their medical treatment or wherever they live. Some of the free therapies available: • Counselling
• Reflexology
• Aromatherapy massage
• Nutritional advice
• Acupuncture
Marian Parfitt, Breast Cancer Haven’s Manager of the Titchfield centre says: “Everybody’s experience of breast cancer is different, so we tailor each person’s care to their particular situation and concerns. Our trained professional nurses, therapists, counsellors and advisers listen to each person’s individual concerns and give them all the practical, emotional and physical support you need in a tailor-made support plan. This could include emotional help – for individuals and their families, help combatting stress, exhaustion and nausea brought on by chemotherapy and practical advice on things like healthy eating, exercise, money and work. And above all, there is always someone here to talk to about their deepest fears. “Almost 3,000 people are currently in treatment in the Wessex region which includes Hampshire and its bordering counties and we want to help as many of these people as we can. “We are celebrating our first anniversary in October and since we opened we have helped over 300 people, who come to us for on average about four months each. “In April we stated a Younger Women’s Support Group and a Secondary Breast Cancer Support Group which have been very well attended – sometimes just sharing experiences with other people in a similar situation can be really helpful”.
“The hospital got rid of my breast cancer but Breast Cancer Haven put me back together again.” Jackie, service user

The Green Blue supports call on UK Government to ban microbeads in cosmetics Tackling the environmental impact of microplastics
How can you help?
Microbeads can be used in medicine for a range of treatments, but do we really need them in face wash and other body scrubs?
The Green Blue, the joint environment programme created by the Royal Yachting Association and British Marine, is mindful that people having showers on boats without greywater holding tanks will be contributing to the amount of microbeads in the ocean possibly without realising it.
Recently a number of countries have decided to ban cosmetic microbeads, including the US and Canada. Here in the UK, Parliament’s Environmental Audit Committee has called for a national ban by the end of 2017.
Damaging marine life Environmental Audit Committee Chair Mary Creagh MP said: “Trillions of tiny pieces of plastic are accumulating in the world’s oceans, lakes and estuaries, harming marine life and entering the food chain. “The microbeads in scrubs, shower gels and toothpastes are an avoidable part of this plastic pollution problem. A single shower can result in 100,000 plastic particles entering the ocean. “Cosmetic companies’ voluntary approach to phasing out plastic microbeads simply won’t wash. We need a full legal ban, preferably at an international level as pollution does not respect borders. “If this isn’t possible after our vote to leave the EU, then the Government should introduce a national ban. The best way to reduce this pollution is to prevent plastic being flushed into the sea in the first place.”
Global evidence Across the globe there is overwhelming evidence that microbeads are in our oceans and the rate is increasing. Here in the UK, microplastics are being found in our oceans by scientists who are trawling the surface of the water with a fine mesh. The majority of microbeads which are used on land enter the sewerage network where it is estimated about 1% remain in solution and do not get filtered. Up to 86 tonnes of microbeads from personal care products are washed into the marine environment from the UK every year. The problem with microbeads is that they end up in the food chain and the long term effects to human and marine health are still not known.
Jane Swan, Project Manager of The Green Blue, said: “As boaters we all have a vested interest in protecting the environment where we spend our leisure time and The Green Blue is dedicated to ensuring you get the best possible advice on how to do that. “Grey water discharge from sinks and showers can be very damaging to sensitive aquatic life. There are a number of publications which list the scrubs that do and do not have microbeads in them – the most up-to-date being Flora and Fauna International’s Good Scrub Guide. “Boaters may also like to download the app called ‘Beat the Microbead.’ Using this app you simply scan the barcode and it will tell you if the product has microbeads. The Green Blue team used the app in the shower facility at the RYA and found one item to have microbeads in it. The owner did not know that microbeads were in the product. “There is an array of highly effective natural sustainable options that have a hugely reduced impact on the environment, so we urge boaters to think carefully about the impact of their grey water discharge.” Government will respond to the recommendations of the Environmental Audit Committee in the coming months – watch this space! For more advice on how to maintain, equip and operate your boat in an environmentally friendly manner visit www.thegreenblue.org.uk/ Boat-Users

Marwell Zoo Visitors to Marwell Zoo, near Winchester, can enjoy lots of new arrivals this year including, Amur leopard cubs, Amur tiger cubs and zebra foals! Marwell Zoo is owned by Marwell Wildlife, a world renowned, action oriented charity leading conservation programmes in the UK and Africa. There’s more than 170 species to see at Marwell Zoo and over 140 acres of beautiful parkland to explore with play parks, trains, animal talks and feeds there’s plenty to occupy your little ones whilst you relax and soak up the surroundings. In August the zoo’s tiger cubs made their first appearance and they’re delighting guests with their playful antics. This is mum, Milla and dad, Bagai’s first litter together. Both tigers are part of an important European endangered species Breeding Programme (EEP) which maintains a healthy captive population of tigers and preserves critical genetic diversity for the future. As wells as little tiger cubs the zoo celebrated the birth of some of the rarest cats in the world, the Amur leopard. The leopard cub twins took their first tentative steps out of their den at the beginning of September. With fewer than 70 Amur leopards remaining in the wild, these cubs are not only wonderful to watch but they are a vital addition to the future of the species. The zoo has also welcomed the arrival of Safiya, a Grevy’s zebra foal who can be seen in the ‘Wild Explorers’ exhibit, which is also home to white rhino, ostrich and scimitar-horned oryx. There are lots of adoptions on offer at the zoo, including their new arrivals, so why not treat a loved one to a very special furry surprise! Or book a special animal encounter for an experience of a lifetime! Visit the Marwell website www.marwell.org.uk and click on the ‘support us’ link for more information. 58 | The LOOP

This summer Marwell Wildlife launched a trail of ‘Marwell’s Zany Zebras’ in the city of Southampton and a miniature trail at the zoo. In October, all the sculptures will be brought together for a ‘Zebratastic’ event at The Ageas Bowl in Southampton. Visitors can view all 150 of the sculptures in one place. For more information about Marwell’s Zany Zebras visit www.zanyzebras.org.uk Marwell’s Zany Zebras was not only a spectacular fun-filled event but it also raised awareness of Marwell Wildlife’s conservation work in Africa. Marwell Wildlife has been working with Grevy’s zebra for a long time, contributing to the development and implementation of a national plan for their conservation in Kenya. This includes
carrying out research to help guide conservation action, monitoring the status of Grevy’s zebra populations throughout their range, and supporting community based initiatives that help people and wildlife. Because their numbers are so low, Marwell Wildlife also responds to save Grevy’s zebra from critical events such as disease outbreaks or prolonged drought.
After the Zebratatsic event, the Marwell’s Zany Zebras will be sold at auction to raise funds to conserve endangered Grevy’s zebras and other wildlife. This winter sees the return of the award-winning ‘Christmas at Marwell’. Make your family’s Christmas magical and join in the festivities at the zoo as they celebrate with a few special friends. It’s one of the top 15 places to see Santa in the UK according to netmums.com. The event runs from 19th November - 24th December 2016. To book tickets or to find out more visit www.marwell.org.uk Visitors to Marwell Zoo can enjoy a range of daily talks and feeds including curious coatis, snow leopard feeds and penguin talks. Download the app for the latest information and discover even more fascinating facts about the residents at Marwell Zoo. You can read all about the zoo’s latest updates in their magazine ‘Marwell News’. Find out about the zoo’s latest arrivals, new exhibits, the latest conservation developments in Africa, special events taking place and meet some of the staff that work for the charity. Extensive refit for Oriana to retain “classical elegance” P&O Cruises have unveiled details of the new-look Oriana, due for an extensive refit later this year. Oriana will undergo a three-week refurbishment in Hamburg at the end of November. The adult-only mid-sized ship will receive a complete makeover of its cabins, restaurants, bars, entertainment areas and public spaces to provide a whole new elegant and sophisticated look for the ship. Details of changes include Oriana’s main dining rooms, the Peninsular and Oriental restaurants, which will each be updated with rich new colour schemes, replacing the carpets, curtain fabric and upgrading the lighting. The passenger cabins will also be transformed with a new palette of natural creams, soft greys and teal. Chairs, sofas, tables and lamps will also be updated with newer classic styles as well as upgraded bathrooms. P&O Cruises’ senior vice president, Paul Ludlow, said: “After listening to guests’ feedback, we are investing in updates to many areas of the ship, but what is key is that we are retaining her unique charm and traditional character. With her teak promenade and lido decks, we know that Oriana holds a special place in the hearts of many of our guests and so we will be keeping her most distinctive features, such as her Tiffany glass ceiling and other well-loved classic touches.” P&O Cruises is collaborating with leading designers Richmond International, who also worked on the décor for Britannia and various luxury hotels across the continent, to provide a modern yet classic look and feel throughout. P&O Cruises has selected Oriana sailings in its latest ‘come celebrate with us’ promotion with extra on board spending money for Select Price bookings in an outside cabin or above made by September 30, 2016. For more information or to book, call P&O Cruises on 0843 374 0111, visit www.pocruises.com, or visit your local travel agent. contactus@loopmagazine.net

Andy Comley - Singer-songwriter Singer-songwriter Andy Comley, Acoustic Routes Tour, Shedfield Reading Rooms, 26th November 2016 Having played on three continents and supported some of the UK’s top singer-songwriters such as Boo Hewerdine (Eddie Reader), Emily Barker, and Amy Wadge (Ed Sheeran), singer-songwriter Andy Comley is moving out of the usual venues and heading back to his roots, by embarking on a tour of rural halls, which will begin at the Shedfield Reading Rooms and then move countrywide. The gigs will be a sit down, lights out, spotlight on, affairs but that’s not the only way they will differ from your average gig. Although the music will be the usual line-up of Andy on acoustic guitar and vocals and Dave Bulbeck on double bass, this time they will be playing and singing to only one microphone to get a rich, but delicate, live sound - more of the player, less of the technology. This format will make for intimate, atmospheric evenings for the audience and performer alike. Doors open 7.00pm for 7.45pm start. Tickets £12 on the door, or £10 online. Doug Cole I have been painting professionally for 6 years now, but it’s only been the last year that I have been doing it full time. The work I do is so varied, and every job is so different. I paint anything from individual canvases, to cafes, care homes, and schools. The canvases I paint are usually commissioned as a unique gift for someone, and often include specific subjects such as, a favourite scene from a film, family portraits with a particular background/ setting, and I have even painted someone’s family crest! The jobs I enjoy most are working in schools as the children always love to get involved and they are always so enthusiastic about it. It is so rewarding for the children to see their ideas come to life on the walls, and their teachers/parents are always amazed at the artwork that is there for years to come. I love hearing what ideas people have for me, sometimes they are very specific, but a lot of the time they are just a vague idea, which I’m happy to build on with the customer. My goal isn’t just to satisfy the customer, but to amaze them every time.
Hand painted, unique designs to transform your home, school, restaurant, pub, cafe, care home, workplace, or for an amazing gift Contact me with your ideas, I can paint you anything, any size, on walls or canvas, have a look on my Facebook page - Doug Cole’s Magnific Murals or my website www.magnificmurals.co.uk for more of my work! Keeping your Pets Happy and Healthy this Winter Before the onset of winter now is a good time to assess our furry companions. Whether dog, cat, rabbit or exotic as owners we need to be aware of our pets condition so that should any changes occur we can act immediately. It is important for them to be in the best of health before the challenges of the winter months. Firstly are you vaccinations, flea and worm control up to date? Visiting your vet in order to do so, gives you the opportunity to go over any health queries you may have; thus building up a relationship with the professional in charge of your pets health. It is good to know your pet physically so that you can identify when something is amiss. Checking weight and recording regularly, enables an owner to act if a pet loses or gains too much (maybe indicating a problem). Teeth and gum checks are important to identify early signs of periodontal disease, any tartar build-up or for cracked or broken teeth that may cause discomfort. Knowing what your pets eyes and ears look like normally is vital; when changes do occur, you can then act quickly and get them treated, as these issues usually turn very nasty quickly if left alone. Again knowing your pet skin and body highlights problems should they occur and again treatment should be sought if anything untoward presents itself. Changes in the way your pet moves can indicate problems early. Take time out to observe how your pet gets up, walks and runs; identifying problems is easier when you know how your dog is normally. With your understanding of your pet and the vets knowledge, together you can keep your family member fit and healthy and prevent chronic conditions. Some premium Healthy Pet Clubs offer complimentary health checks throughout the year without charge so it is worth asking your vet if they do this. Take time out today and get to know your pet; one day you’ll be glad you did. Tel: 01489 607001 www.heathsidevets.co.uk

In this edition Rosetta’s comet lander Philae found Rosetta and the UK Tim Peake to attend Schools conference in Portsmouth 2nd November 2016 New colour images of Martian terrain released by NASA

SPACE
AGENCY contactus@loopmagazine.net
Rosetta’s comet lander Philae found On Friday 2 September, Rosetta’s high-resolution camera showed the Philae lander’s location on Comet 67P/Churyumov– Gerasimenko (Comet 67P) for the first time. Philae was spotted over 2km away from the OSIRIS narrow-angle camera on the surface of the comet.
Can you spot Philae? Credit ESA
Rosetta deployed the Philae lander on 12 November 2014. It was last seen at Agilkia, before flying again and ending up in Abydos. Establishing communication with Philae was difficult with its primary battery being exhausted and the lander went into hibernation. Philae briefly communicated with Rosetta in June and July 2015 as the comet came closer to the Sun and more power became available. Establishing communication with the lander was difficult; however these new images show the cause was Philae’s orientation.
The news comes less than a month before Rosetta ends its mission and descends onto the comet’s surface. During Philae’s first bounce off of the comets surface, UK-led instrument Ptolemy sampled ambient gas and detected main components of coma gases, including water vapour, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. Smaller amounts of carbonbearing organic compounds were also detected, such as formaldehyde. Ian Wright, Professor of Planetary Sciences at the Open University and Principal Investigator for the Ptolemy instrument, said: Finding Philae is strangely rewarding and emotional news. For those of us who worked for so long on this project it is great to see the spacecraft one more time. This will give all of the Ptolemy team a sense of closure on the mission.
Rosetta and the UK With funding from the UK Space Agency and the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC), Rosetta is a mission with significant UK involvement from industry and science.
Credit ESA
Philae’s instruments include a gas analyser, the Ptolemy instrument, which was designed and built by teams from the UK’s Science and Technology Facilities Council’s RAL Space and the Open University. Ptolemy has an on-board oven for heating comet samples and collects data to analyse the relationship between water ice on comets and the Earth’s oceans. Ptolemy also studies the nature of organic material on the comet and uses this to investigate the relationship with similar materials from other Solar System bodies. contactus@loopmagazine.net

The Schools Conferences will celebrate the work done by over a million school students throughout the UK, inspired by Tim’s Principia mission. Students will present their work through talks and exhibitions to Tim and experts from the UK Space Agency, the European Space Agency (ESA), our partner organisations and the space sector. The UK Space Agency has invested £3 million in the biggest education and outreach initiative ever undertaken for an ESA astronaut. Over a million young people have taken part in a broad spectrum of curriculum-linked projects, including scientific experiments, coding challenges, family shows at local science centres, creative writing and more.

Tim Peake said, “Encouraging students to engage with my Principia mission was always something that I had hoped to do and I am thrilled at the range of different things young people have done to follow my mission. I’m really looking forward to hearing about all these tremendous projects direct from the students themselves.” Jeremy Curtis, the UK Space Agency’s Head of Education and Skills, said, “This is a fantastic opportunity for students and pupils to find out what it’s like to be part of a professional conference. We want to celebrate the achievements of young people across the whole country, to meet with them and to hear more about what they have done. It’s great that Tim is able to join us for both of these events.”

Accommodation
Our Three-star package offers our high standard of luxury rooms and attention, along with our daily maid service, night time steward, daily grooming, massage and personal trainer. Meals are selected from the Quarterdeck Menu to our guests’ personal taste.
At the Seaside Cat Hotel, we aim to give our guests a relaxing and luxury experience, a real home from home. The Hotel has been carefully designed to be fully compliant with the latest licencing conditions 2013 (revised June 2016). All rooms are en-suite, have a daily maid service and an evening steward, to provide for our guests every need. A daily massage, grooming session and personal trainer session are included. All our rooms are divided into a heated private cabin for relaxing, and a promenade to stretch your legs, sleep in the sunshine, enjoy the sea air or watch the world go by. All cabins have a thermostatically controlled heating system, so our guests are warm and cosy whatever the weather. Each have a relaxation pod to get away from it all, an open bed to doze and a massage centre for a rub in those hard to reach places. All our sleeping areas have bespoke handmade quilts, with soft bedding you can snuggle into. Combine this with a relaxing aromatherapy diffuser designed for felines, and its cat holiday heaven. The promenade area is accessed directly from the cabin through a convenient swing door, which can be held open if our guests prefer clear access to this facility. Each promenade area is private, and not accessible by other guests. If you wish to relax in private, the lower areas have solid divisions, but if you want to see what everyone else is doing and nosy at other guests, the higher areas are slightly more public. The promenade area is where our team offer personal training sessions and entertainment. For our less active guests, we provide a hammock for relaxing and enjoying some peace and quiet in the sun. If our guests prefer to watch the wildlife and take in the view of the hotel gardens, each promenade has its own lookout tower. Our aim is that each guest will have the perfect holiday, and return home relaxed and rejuvenated. We always provide each guest with a momento of their holiday, and of course a gift for Mum and Dad.
Package Options We offer three packages to enable our guests to have the purrfect holiday. Our Three star package offers all our standard services.
For that extra touch of holiday luxury our Four-star package could be just what you are looking for. All the services of our Three-star package are included, along with our daily Bedtime Butler Service. As a nightly treat, our Bedtime Butler will bring a milky drink designed for felines and some artisan nibbles, to end the day in style. Who doesn’t like something special at bedtime! We pride our hotel on providing luxury options for our guests. The Five-star package offers all services from our Four-star package, with an up-grade to fine dining from our Captains Table Menu. This menu has been carefully selected and taste tested by our resident food critics Eric (the Ginger) and Evie (the Tabby). They have selected meals created by Canagans or Natures Menu Country Hunter for our guests. We have both a wet and dry food menu choices available, or we can mix and match for those who enjoy both. All meals are grain free, high meat content meals. The dry kibble we offer is a Canagans choice, is grain free and come in two varieties with either free range chicken or Scottish Salmon. Both varieties offer at least 70% high meat content along with carefully selected vegetable and botanicals for balanced nutrition. Just pick your meal provider and we will do the rest. Alternatively, try a bit of everything and we will carefully select the meal choices for you. If it becomes obvious that our guests are not enjoying this menu, we will offer something different. We do not want any of our guests to be hungry. If our guests are celebrating a special occasion, or want to try something new while on holiday, we can offer a Tasting Experience, with new and exciting tastes to try. This experience gives our guests an opportunity to try a new taste. We offer tastes which combine fruit and meat, and our guests love them. This menu has tastes such as Chicken with Pineapple, Tuna with Papaya, Chicken with Apple, Tuna with Mango to name but a few. We all love to try new foods on holiday, and our tasting menu is ideal as a little bit of a new taste is gentle on the tummy, and a naughty but nice treat.

Linda is the first point of contact should any of our guests need anything at all. She is always popping into their rooms to check they are enjoying their stay, and is the main provider of all the services at the hotel. Nigel is more of a silent partner and when at the hotel loves to meet the guests. He will take on various duties around the hotel, when help is needed, in accordance with Linda’s exacting standards, or else! Here are our resident food critics Eric (the ginger) and Evie (the tabby). As you can see they take their job very seriously, and can often be found sleeping on the sofa after a busy taste testing session.
About Us As my family grew up and spread their wings, I finally had some time for myself. My true crazy cat lady was making a bid for freedom. I had persuaded my ever tolerant husband to agree to have a Cats Protection foster shelter in our garden. We both found it so rewarding to nurture a cat back to health or encourage a timid cat to become more confident. Once our work is done, off they go with a kiss, to a new forever home. A seed was sown, and the idea of offering a safe, secure, modern, luxury Hotel for cats to stay while their mum and dad are away from home, was born. We wanted our Hotel to offer a personal service, and in order that we can get to know our guests and be able to adapt to their individual needs we only have six double rooms. They are each carefully designed to give a calm and relaxing environment, but with enough entertainment so boredom doesn’t set in. Our dream was to create a real cat holiday heaven. The Seaside Cat Hotel has been developed with the input of the whole family, including Eric (the Ginger) and Evie (the Tabby), our resident food critics. While our guests are with us they become part of our family, and are given lots of love and cuddles, or peace and quiet if that’s what they want. I now have my dream job, looking after animals I adore. I now have lots of new cats to love, some to get clean, healthy and with new loving families. Others to pamper and return to their parents happy, healthy and relaxed. contactus@loopmagazine.net

Brits top sailing medal table in Rio For a fourth time over the last five Olympics, Great Britain is crowned top performing sailing nation at Rio 2016 Two golds for Giles Scott (Finn) and Hannah Mills and Saskia Clark (470 Women) plus Nick Dempsey’s RS:X windsurfing silver ensured Britain topped the table as best sailing nation at Rio 2016. University of Southampton graduate Giles Scott headed into the final Medal Race of his Olympics knowing that he simply had to complete the race to top the podium. The four-time World Champion effectively wrapped up his first Olympic title before the Medal Race by putting a 24-point gap between himself and Vasilij Zbogar (SLO) in silver medal position. With his final race worth double points, even if Giles was disqualified and scored the worst possible result of 22 points, he still couldn’t be beaten to gold. It proved to be a defining moment for Giles as he ensured that the men’s heavyweight dinghy crown remains in British hands for a fifth successive Games by inheriting the Finn title held by the most successful Olympic sailor of all time, Sir Ben Ainslie. For the University of Southampton’s remaining competitors in Rio 2016, the results didn’t bring home the silverware but the experience for some will undoubtedly bring future success. In the women’s Laser Radial class, Civil Engineering graduate Alison Young finished strong by winning the final Medal Race but came eighth overall. After the race, Alison revealed she had suffered a broken ankle in a training accident eight weeks out from the Games, and had undergone an intensive rehabilitation programme to get her onto the Olympic start line. Olympic debutants Ben Saxton, a Southampton Business Studies graduate, and sailing partner Nicola Groves, who lives in Fareham, also made an early challenge for a place on the podium in the mixed Nacra 17 multihull before finishing ninth. 86 | The LOOP
contactus@loopmagazine.net
“You need to be able to nail every single day, we said that coming in to the event, and we tried it,” said Ben. “Nic and I went out with the approach to try and attack the Games, we started off the event really well and then didn’t manage to close it out. But we’ve done ourselves proud, plus we’ve had fun. The Olympics are awesome.” There was Medal Race disappointment for Dylan Fletcher and local sailor Alain Sign in the 49er after a second lap capsize ended their chances of finishing their first Olympics on the podium, as they crossed the line in 10th spot to finish the event sixth overall. Nevertheless, the duo have taken positives from their Rio performance. Alain, who started sailing aged 10 near his home in Lee-on-the-Solent, said: “It’s amazing to be part of the team, how we all muck in and help each other out. That spurs you on when you have a bad day, they pat you on the back and say ‘good job’ when you are struggling out there. It’s been a great experience to witness that.”
Luke Patience and Chris Grube ended Rio 2016 on a high with a third in the 470 Men’s Medal Race seeing them end the event fifth overall. It was an impressive end to a full-on eight months for the pair who only started sailing together again after Elliot Willis, who Patience had campaigned with for the Rio Olympic cycle, was diagnosed with cancer in late 2015. In the RS:X Women’s class, windsurfer Bryony Shaw admitted she felt “unfulfilled” after finishing her Rio 2016 in ninth overall. It was also a tough day in the office for Charlotte Dobson and Sophie Ainsworth in the 49erFX Medal Race after a start line penalty and a mid-race capsize saw them cross the line in 10th to end their debut Games in eighth overall. The duo admitted it has been four years they will never forget. Charlotte said: “It’s been a magical experience, from start to finish, way more than I expected it to be. It’s amazing to be part of such a strong, supportive GB team. It’s been really nice to share in all the success and hopefully one day it might be us on the podium.”
“The Olympics is amazing, it’s everything everyone always said it was going to be, it’s the greatest show on earth. Just being here representing my country is an incredibly proud moment, it’s something I’ve always wanted to do and it means a lot to me,” he concluded.
Southampton-born Nick Thompson admitted Olympic success is something that “still burns inside him” after finishing his Rio 2016 Laser quest in sixth place. Nick went into his double points Medal Race still with an outside shot of claiming a podium spot, but after crossing the line in eighth he maintained the final overall position that he held at the start of the day.
On the final day of racing at the Rio 2016 sailing regatta, Hannah Mills and Saskia Clark confirmed a glorious victory which they had all but wrapped up by putting a 20-point gap between themselves and Jo Aleh and Polly Powrie (NZL).
“There’s no one reason I didn’t settle into the regatta, I just wasn’t on fire. Coming into this event I always knew that if I was going to have a chance of winning I was going to have to be 100% and I just never got into that rhythm,” explained Nick.
An eighth in their double points Medal Race confirmed what had been delayed for 24 hours after a postponement for lack of breeze – that the British 470 Girls’ had upgraded their London 2012 silver to Rio 2016 gold. Gig photography, is it for you? Wickham Festival 2016 - What a show! Hello again readers. Since my last article in LOOP Magazine Issue 16, I have been rather quiet with my photography hobby, well sort of! Following my first photo shoot at the Wickham Festival in 2015, I was totally hooked on this award winning festival; a bonus of seeing my shots published on the festivals gallery page some months later was enough for me to attend the festival again this year as one of the official photographers. I couldn’t wait to go back again. Seeing what the festival had to offer in terms of professional artists and local talent was very well publicised and the closer the date came the more excited I was to get the camera gear ready to get into the ‘PIT’ and photograph some live action, especially when I heard who was playing. This festival has graced the fields of Wickham since 2010 I am told, year on year the talent that visits the festival over the 4 day period has been pure class and goes from strength to strength. From rock n roll stars, Mod acts, Fiddlers, Acoustic solo acts, TV talent show winners to foot stomping hillbilly blues acts and highly acclaimed folk music acts, this along with local up and coming talent there is something for everyone here. Ages from the cradle to the mature traveller frequent this excellent festival with its lovely prepared fields, superb facilities and entertainment to suit all needs. Do you fancy being up close and personal with the stars? Gig photography is one way of doing this, listening to the music live is what the festival goer attends for, but if you want to visually see the strings on the guitar and witness the artist looking you straight between the eyes, then come on down and get started in this great hobby.

Roger Taylor from Queen ‘Radio Ga Ga’
The Stranglers
From Roger Taylor (Queen) to Tony Hadley (Spandau Ballet) playing live, you know you’re going to be in for a treat. The camera settings are constantly being changed as a gig photographer throughout the day, the sun and clouds are keeping you on your toes outdoors, then we head indoors into an acoustic tent or the big top, multi coloured lights and the sun streaming in through the tent roof, it’s a constant battle but one that has rewards when you see the results. Sit in the PIT with your gear and the band is ready to come on, no flash allowed! Yes that’s right, its dark, its blue, its green, then there are the dry ice smoke screens, how are we supposed to get a good shot in those conditions? Practice! Then practice again, but be mindful, the acts normally only allow you to take photographs during the first three songs so be quick! If you have ever witnessed the mayhem in the PIT at night don’t be fooled! The photographers know how to behave, how to keep out of each other’s way, how to be courteous with the paying audience and certainly know how to get the attention of the artists, well most of the time. Ever thought you would be standing in front of the Stranglers? Well at the ripe old age of 50 this photographer is well versed in the melody that is ‘Golden Brown’ ‘texture like sun’…..so no surprise here I was looking forward to seeing this set for sure, camera at the ready I did a distance shot with the audience in the foreground, pretty cool to be able to roam around and grab what shot you want.
Toyah Wilcox
Jamie Moses
I have photographed Spike Edney’s SAS band before (Keyboard and technical director from Queen), as always he does not disappoint the audience when he brings his stars to the stage. Wickham Festival was no exception. Toyah Wilcox was superb and wowed the audience with past hits as was Madeline Bell and Fish aka Marillion. Lead guitarist Jamie Moses was also on stage. Jamie is an accomplished session guitarist who’s played with Queen and Sir Tom Jones for many years. He has performed and recorded with Mike and the Mechanics, Bob Geldof, The Pretenders, Chaka Khan, Amy Winehouse, Gary Barlow, Tony Hadley and many more. contactus@loopmagazine.net

The crowd at Wickham is full of people who are there to relax, feel safe, and enjoy the atmosphere with their family and friends, to chill out, drink tea, eat cake, generally socialise and maybe have the odd nap or two, whatever you do at Wickham Festival, you will thoroughly enjoy yourself, and the real ale is good I am told lol.
Buckaroo or dancing anyone? Just taking a nap!

Wickham Festival THE BEST just got better. Organisers have hailed this year’s Wickham Festival as the most successful yet. After being named the Best Small Festival at last year’s Live Music awards, it seemed a tall order to top it but record crowds have made the recent event more popular than ever. Organiser Peter Chegwyn said: “After winning that award, it was always going to be a huge challenge to improve but somehow we have managed it. “As holders we are not allowed to enter this year but if we were then I know we would have a strong chance of winning it again because everything went so well. “We had record crowds, glorious weather and a fantastic array of artists. We had an extra stage this year to give a platform to new performers and that proved hugely popular. “And once again it was the feelgood factor which sets us apart from other festivals. You cannot invent that atmosphere, it just happens. “Saturday was 25 years to the day since I started running festivals and I can honestly say this has easily been the best – it has ticked all the boxes. “It is wonderful to see so many smiling faces – not just the fans but the artists too. Every single one of them has come off stage on a high and saying how much they enjoyed playing here. “Even the likes of Roger Taylor of Queen was buzzing. He is used to playing big arenas and stadiums rather than little Wickham but he loved the chance to get up close and personal to the fans. “It is that intimate feel and great music which has fans coming back year after year and we have already had hundreds booking up for August 3-6, 2017. They don’t know the line-up but they know it will be good and that the family-friendly atmosphere will still be the same.
“Once again, we now face a big challenge to get even better but the hard work starts now to make sure we improve again.” Tony Hadley of Spandau Ballet got the opening night off to a great start with The Stranglers topping the bill 24 hours later. Saturday night saw one of the big successes of the event as X Factor winner Matt Cardle guested for the Trevor Horn Band and blew the audience away with a stunning performance. That was followed by Taylor on vocals for the SAS Band whose planned finale was cut because of the curfew. Sunday had a rousing finish with the Red Hot Chilli Pipers and the outstanding Hayseed Dixie cranking up the tempo before Lindisfarne closed the event with a polished show. Chegwyn added: “I think some of our regulars were a little unsure of what to expect from having an X Factor winner there but he showed he not only has an amazing voice but also real stage presence. His version of I’m Not in Love with Lol Creme of 10CC was a real highlight. “We had a lot of big names this year and the great thing was they all chilled together in our backstage area and they all said how much they loved playing here and how they would love to come back. That is why we do this every year – to see so many people having a wonderful time.” Fans who book for next year (Aug 3-6) before the end of this August can save £60 on a weekend ticket and will also have the chance to win a t-shirt signed by most of the top artists including Roger Taylor and Tony Hadley. Community News CommuniCare CommuniCare’s Tuesday Luncheon Club recently held a special luncheon in recognition of the long term service and commitment of its 4 longest serving volunteers. Mrs. Mary Carless and Mrs. Pat Tanner both began their voluntary work with the Luncheon Club around 1976 as cooks. In the late 1970s, Mrs. Lucy Miller was invited to become a volunteer and has carried out the role of cashier/buyer. Mrs. Mavis Bowthorpe first joined Communicare in 1975, when she was an escort on the mini bus. Mavis later became a cook and Luncheon Club coordinator, and has undertaken other roles within CommuniCare as well as within the local community. The Luncheon Clubs take place at Sarisbury Green Community Centre on Mondays, and at the Victory Hall, Warsash on Tuesdays. Where possible, people are transported to the Luncheon Clubs in the CommuniCare mini bus. Other services offered by CommuniCare include: • Collecting people to go shopping at the Lockswood Centre each Thursday, cost £2.00 per person and to Fareham or Whiteley every other Friday at a cost of £3.00 per person. • Coffee Shop – Lockswood Community Centre foyer (opposite the Library). Open every morning except Wednesdays and Sundays. • Arranging car transport for senior citizens (excluding wheel chair users or persons who require medical assistance) to medical appointments. Car drivers collect patients from their home, take them to their appointment and return them to their home again, all for a modest donation. CommuniCare could not function without its volunteers, and we are appealing for people to come forward to help in the areas of cookery and kitchen help. We are also looking for treasurers and volunteer drivers. All CommuniCare personnel are unpaid volunteers, however, car drivers are paid mileage. If you would like to volunteer please ring the CommuniCare Duty Officer between 9.30am and 4.30pm Monday to Friday on 07002 456689.
Hannah helps Little Princess Trust Hannah Browning, 17, from Titchfield Common had 22 inches of her hair cut off to support a charity which supports children who have lost their hair due to cancer treatment. Hannah, who attends Itchen College, heard about the work of the Little Princess Trust and decided to have her locks cut off to support the charity which helps children across the UK. Not only did she donate her hair to the charity she also raised over £140 in sponsorship. Hannah said “I have never had my hair this short before but it was really worthwhile as it is helping young people experiencing very difficult times. I am very grateful to everyone who has sponsored me”. Vanilla Rooms Hair and Beauty in Hedge End were more than happy to help Hannah and the charity by cutting her hair free of charge. Hannah’s mum Sarah Fawcett commented “I am really proud of Hannah; her kindness will hopefully encourage others to donate their hair to this fantastic cause”. 96 | The LOOP

However, in addition they assist children with other conditions which also result in hair loss, the most common being alopecia. www.littleprincesses.org.uk/about-us
