Rubbish Clearance & Waste Removal Networking in your local community... Hello and welcome to another packed edition of the LOOP. We thought we would include a little round-up of what’s been in the last four issues, in case you missed out on anything. Lord Mayor of Portsmouth, Cllr David Fuller is included again in this issue after our interview with him in last month’s issue, (Issue 19), was responded to by a mother whose daughter was inspired by the Lord Mayor following a chance meeting. It was wonderful to go and have high tea at Portsmouth Guildhall with Cllr Fuller last month, and he made us feel very welcome. Issue 18 featured a preview of Wickham Festival, as well as the opening of the Mary Rose museum in Portsmouth. It is fantastic that a piece of iconic British history from so long ago is now again on display for all to see, and provides yet another attraction to Portsmouth. Issue 17 saw the Taste of Wickham Festival previewed, which is followed up in this issue with a review of the festival. It was a huge success this year; so congratulations to the organisers for putting on such a good show, and enjoying their most successful year to date! Also in issue 17 was a piece on the Hampshire Search and Rescue team, who recently received their 500th call-out since being founded in 2003, which you can read about in this month’s issue. We had our eyes opened to the world of Acupuncture in issue 16, when we had a Q & A with traditional acupuncturist Vida Woods, who gave us an insight into the ancient form of healing.

Design on Christmas Isn’t it wonderful that during the dark, dismal and cold days of December we can brighten up our homes and gardens with colourful lights, decorations and Christmas trees? How lucky we are that every year the festive decorations seem to become more varied with such a wide choice that there is always something to suit everyone’s tastes. So whether you go for the bright traditional look or the more sophisticated colour schemes, do go along to Hambrooks of Titchfield where Mike Hodges our Head Garden Designer has created themed Christmas displays to inspire you with different ideas on how to decorate your tree and home this year. One of his themed displays is ‘Santa’s Spectacular Toy Shop’ where elves, reindeer and woodland animals line the rustic shelves of the garden ‘Where Time Forget’. Some are soft toys ideal as presents or stocking fillers and others are tree or outdoor decorations. Mike has actually created an ‘Elf Christmas Tree’, which cleverly demonstrates how to use a single idea using warm colours that are followed through to create a stunning, and unusual Christmas tree. His ‘White, Magical & Modern’ moves away from colour to white and off white to create an equally superb, but very different effect for our gardens and outdoor spaces.

Another new item for this year are the ‘easy-lock’ tree stands – no need to struggle with the tiresome chore of securing your tree in a container and keeping it straight! These days have gone! Happy Christmas everyone and do drop in to see the elves! Hambrooks of Titchfield 01489 572285 www.hambrooks.co.uk

Dear Editor There is one article about Lord Mayor of Portsmouth in last month’s issue that reads: “Having been influenced by another man in the same role as his, and with his priorities set on meeting as many members of public as he can, who knows if he (Lord Mayor) will inspire another child to become a Lord Mayor of the near future.”
I write to you just to let you know that there is a little girl, Amber-Rose Cullum, 8 years old, who studies at Whiteley Primary School, who has recently been inspired by the Lord Mayor of Portsmouth. It happened on the 18th September 2016, at a Chinese Moon festival party in Yanwoo restaurant, organized by the Portsmouth Chinese Association. Lord Mayor David Fuller was invited and attended, also kindly donating £200 to the Portsmouth Chinese Association. All of the people in attendance that night were touched by his donation and his support to Chinese people in Portsmouth. At the event, Councillor Fuller was happy to have photos taken with everyone, and my daughter Amber was keen to have a photo with the Lord Mayor, and was especially interested in the Lord Mayor’s chain. He took it off and put it on her neck and they had a photo together. AmberRose was very excited and asked a lot of questions about the chain like ‘What is the special chain made of?’, and ‘What are the words on the chain?’ When she heard that it was all of the previous Mayors’ names on the necklace, she was surprised and asked what would happen if the chain one day became too long! Amber was inspired after meeting with the Lord Mayor, and the next day she couldn’t wait to tell her classmates and teachers about the Lord Mayor’s special necklace story. She says she wants to be a Mayor one day like the Lord Mayor David Fuller. Amber-Rose is still working hard every day hoping that she may one day achieve her dream as Cllr Fuller did. Best regards Renee Cullum. 10 | The LOOP

Everetts Hedge End Store has had a Makeover! Friday saw the completion of Everetts Hedge End store refit. And they marked the occasion with a fun filled open day. The store was officially opened by their eldest known customer; Gerald Foley, who is 100 years of age and has been a customer of the Hedge End store since he moved to the area 19 years ago. 4 generations of his family live locally and they all attended the event. The event was well attended by the local community and as well as entering a prize draw, guests were treated to goodie bags, and the children had their faces painted. The refit gives the store more space and a new and bigger consultation room. Pharmacy Manager Nicky Billingham said ‘The refit gives us a much better and larger space so we are able to offer the best possible service to our local community and it will hopefully help us to achieve our long term goal of becoming a Healthy Living Pharmacy in the future.’

Gifts for Christmas Are you looking for a gift that is a bit different? The perfect Christmas gift? How about ticking off something from the bucket list? Or a ‘taster’ before embarking on a PPL/NPPL course? The answer may be on your doorstep with a trial flying lesson. Phoenix Aviation is a CAA registered Flying School at Lee-on-Solent Airfield, offering trial lessons with its fully qualified and highly experienced flying instructors. From just £75 you, or the lucky recipient, could be learning to fly in a C42 Microlight ! Phoenix Aviation started operating from Lee-on-Solent Airfield in 2008, with a group of just a dozen private pilots and one leased aircraft. At that time the future of the Airfield was in doubt, and there were no facilities which could be used as a base for operations. Once the threat of imminent closure of the airfield was removed, Phoenix was able to locate into a portacabin, and purchase its first aircraft - a Piper PA28 Warrior. The Club’s activities were soon extended to include flying training for the Private Pilot’s licence, and further aircraft were purchased to accommodate a rapidly growing membership. The Club also branched out into microlight hire and training, using two new Ikarus C42 microlights. At the end of 2014, Phoenix moved into purpose-designed facilities on the second floor of the Control Tower, with excellent views across the airfield. Today Phoenix operates seven owned-aircraft - five 4-seater light aircraft and two 2-seater microlights. The membership of around 130 pilots and students is supported by 12 highly experienced and professional flight instructors. The scale of the operation may have increased, but Phoenix is still run by flying enthusiasts for flying enthusiasts, with the emphasis on making aircraft hire and flight training as affordable as possible.
No lower or upper age limits apply for learning to fly, but for practical reasons teenager and upwards is recommended, and you can’t log hours for your licence until aged 14. Check out our advert and for more information visit www.phoenixaviation.co.uk or call us on 023 9255 2703.

Gifts for Christmas Wickham – Your Christmas awaits! This season it might be worth keeping it quaint and festive by visiting one of Hampshire’s smaller delights for unique gifts, convenient and very reasonably priced parking in the lovely village of Wickham, Hampshire. It now boasts many independent shops and boutiques with largely unique gifts that you cannot get from high street shopping.
Shopping The large traditional village square has dotted around it many cafes, tea rooms, sweet shops, home decor and boutiques that offers many gift ideas for Christmas. You might find yourself in one of the two shopping malls, Warwick Lane or Bay Tree Walk that boasts a coffee house, tea room, chocolates, gifts, fashion, hair, beauty, antiques, collectibles and many other boutique style shops. In fact the village has a good reputation for its antiques, collectibles and furniture, with one of those being that of Chesapeake Mill, which was built using the timbers from the United States frigate Chesapeake, which was captured by the Royal Navy during the War of 1812. The home décor, furniture and gifts continues around the square with J’adore la Maison which is bursting at the seams with gift ideas and offers Annie Sloan painting workshops too! Hemmings and RG Warwick Yard provide a whole manner of the daily essentials for DIY and building materials and are mostly
traditional hardware stores located just off of the square. Ideal gift ideas if tools and gardening are a passion!
Eating Please do stay a little longer if you can! Take a break from Christmas shopping and consider anything from afternoon tea, coffee house with freshly made Paninis, cafe with all day breakfasts and even an entirely vegan restaurant.
Making the evening last longer? With plenty of fine dining and pub grub options available it’s suitable for any budget. Wickham tickles the taste buds for most offering Indian, British, Italian and Gastropub foods, so you may want to consider all the options before you dive in.
Walking Situated just a few minutes’ walk away is the tranquility and peace of the water meadows. Walk along the banks of the river if the weather permits or walk along the ‘old train line’ if you just want a nice walk through the countryside crossing bridges instead of roads. If its history you are after, just walk around the village itself and take the many beautiful buildings that surround the square and meander down Bridge Street past the Chesapeake Mill and over to the Church.
Village with history... shopping with choice!

Award winning Taste of Wickham festival continues to grow The third outing for the Taste of Wickham festival in September saw its record attendance, greatest number of stalls and greatest weather yet. Over 6,500 people attended this year’s festival, up by nearly a third from last year, and provided attendants with its biggest and most varied programme of events and entertainment to date. The event also celebrated its biggest and best year to date by winning the Hampshire Award for Rural Enterprise from the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE). Many stalls displayed local and regional foods, drinks and produce, many of which were used in the cookery demonstrations in the marquee. Many more stalls showed the varied talents of other Wickham-centred businesses and organisations. The event’s sponsors and supporters – who included The Southern Co-operative, Byrne Runciman Estate Agents, and Coffin Mew, Solicitors – enabled the event to keep to its policy of free entry and free parking. The organising committee give huge thanks to all the sponsors, to the supporters and to the many volunteer helpers. Entertainment on the day included live music, a bouncy castle, Swanmore Dancers, A Capella singing from the Acca Voce Ladies Choir, and the Pompey Pluckers Ukulele band. After such a successful year it will be difficult to top when the event returns to Wickham in September 2017.

Speedy start to season for Fareham Nomads Nomad’s head coach John Molyneaux, said: “Although we came second behind Bracknell and Wokingham A team, it was the fight against Walker Tigers which was tight, as we finished just ahead of them by two points. I am proud of our team who raced hard. They were also supported by swimmers and parents on poolside who cheered the loudest.”
Fareham Nomads had a speedy start to the season by finishing second in the first round of the National Arena Swimming League gala, in what proved a close and competitive race. A determined team of Fareham Nomads swimmers raced Bracknell and Wokingham A team, Walkers Tigers, Alton and District, Guildford City C team, and Bracknell and Wokingham B team in the Division One West competition on Saturday 8 October at Bracknell Leisure Centre.
Christopher Finch, Amelia Boyes, Ryan Ireland, Hannah Cooper, Joe Davies, Izzy Talbot, Ellen Jewell, Charlie Hoyler, Jessica Davies and James Baxter all won their individual races to score Fareham Nomads maximum points.

With prices starting at just £15 for a small box; Boxxfresh price-matches the retailers wherever possible, ensuring that customers can appreciate not just superior freshness but great value as well. Getting your 5-A-Day delivered to your door couldn’t be easier!
Have a Boxxfresh Christmas Founded in 2015 by Kelly Barfoot and her husband Jon, Boxxfresh is a Titchfield-based veg-box delivery service with a mission to connect seasonal, locally grown produce to local consumers and to inspire them with easy-to-follow weekly recipes. We met them both recently at the Loop offices in Warsash to discuss the story behind the business and what’s ahead for 2017. “Being married into a farming family certainly kick-started my passion for fresh produce,” Kelly recalls, telling how she learned to appreciate the quality difference of freshly picked seasonal vegetables. ‘Knowledge from the farming side, in terms of growing seasons and how to taste the difference in varieties was a real advantage when I began cooking and developing recipes,” she reflects back on what inspired her in the early days.
Christmas truly is a wonderful time of year; but at Boxxfresh, they certainly know that it can be a bit of a juggling act ticking all the boxes on the to-do list! So let Kelly and her team take the hassle away this festive season by giving you a helping hand in the kitchen; whether that’s hints and recipe ideas from their blog (www.lovelife-livewell.com), hand selecting an abundant box of fresh produce or putting together an award winning cheeseboard box to finish off the big day. Boxxfresh festive boxes start at £25. For more information, please contact the Boxxfresh team at info@boxxfresh.com
Kelly credits her family as her test-pilots and has built an impressive repertoire of simple and tasty everyday meals that she is confident anyone, no matter how unskilled or time-pressed, could master at home. ‘Helping people to access better quality vegetables was the initial idea behind launching the business, but making the service useful to our customers so that they can enjoy cooking everything they order is another benefit of the service, and is the key to happy customers’. ‹Produce is the star of the show at Boxxfresh and with so many fantastic local fruit and vegetable growers within a 30 mile radius, we’re spoilt for choice on the south coast,’ agrees her partner Jon. The idea to link local growers with local consumers continues to go from strength to strength, drawing customers via the internet, social media and word of mouth referrals. ‘What makes Boxxfresh different from other home-delivery services is that our customers choose exactly what they want from a weekly list of available produce, which gets emailed to them from Boxxfresh every Monday morning. Bespoke customer orders are returned to us by corresponding email and then we personally deliver to customers every Friday - in time for the weekend,’ informs Jon, reassuring us that that the process is designed to be as hassle-free as possible.

Butternut Squash, Mushroom & Kale Salad Sweet butternut squash, earthy mushrooms, crunchy kale and salty feta cheese; this delicious winter salad one to remember… Ingredients to serve 4: 1 small butternut squash 4 handfuls of kale torn off the stalks and finely shredded 200g chestnut mushrooms, sliced 1 clove garlic, flattened with the back of a knife 1-2 green chillies, finely diced Method:
Olive oil Sherry or red wine vinegar Sea salt Freshly ground black pepper 200g feta cheese
1. Pre-heat the oven to 180°c/350°f/ gas mark 4. 2. Cut the butternut squash into half moons by cutting it in half lengthways, scooping out the seeds and slicing it widthways into 1cm slices. Place them all in a roasting tray, add the crushed garlic, drizzle with 1 tbsp of olive oil and mix everything together with your hands to ensure an even coating. Roast in the oven for 30-35 minutes or until tender and golden brown. 3. Meanwhile, in a large mixing bowl, whisk together 2 tbsp of vinegar, 3 tbsp olive oil, a pinch of black pepper and a pinch of salt. Add the shredded kale to the bowl and thoroughly coat the kale in the dressing, lightly massaging the kale leaves as you do then set aside. 4. Heat a large frying pan over a medium heat, add 2 tsp of olive oil followed by the sliced mushrooms and green chilli then allow them to gently cook for 5 to 6 minutes, stirring regularly, until they have softened and cooked through. 5. Once the squash is cooked, removed it from the oven and allow to cool just for a minute before adding it to the kale, along with the mushrooms and gently combining the ingredients. Serve in individual bowls or on a large serving board with a scatering of mixed seeds and the feta cheese crumbled over the top.
Cauli Caesar Salad This is a Caesar like no other; it’s great to quickly through together to accompany cold meats, baked fish or as part of a picky board to feed a crowd. Serves 4 Ingredients: 8 tbsp natural yogurt
1 red onion
The zest and juice and 1 lemon
4 handfuls of spinach leaves
2 tsp of natural anchovy paste or 4 anchovy fillets, finely chopped
Freshly ground black pepper
1 tsp wholegrain mustard
3 sprigs of rosemary
1 small glove of garlic, mashed
2 handfuls of freshly shaved parmesan
1 small cauliflower
olive oil
2 handfuls of mixed nuts
Method: 1. Over a medium heat, toast the nuts for 2 minutes, until they turn lightly golden. Transfer to a board and allow to cool before roughly chopping. 2. Heat a 2 tsp of olive oil in the same pan over a medium to high heat. Remove the rosemary from the stalks and sprinkle them evenly into the pan. Allow to fry for 1-2 minutes, stirring regularly, until they have turned a slightly darker colour become crisp and no longer make a frazzling noise. Transfer to some kitchen paper to drain of any excess olive oil and set aside. 3. To make the dressing, combine the yogurt, lemon zest, lemon juice, anchovy, wholegrain mustard, garlic, 2 tbsp olive oil and a good pinch of black pepper in a medium sized mixing bowl. Mix together thoroughly and set aside. 4. Remove the outer leaves from the cauliflower, cut it in half then slice each half, lengthways, as thinly as possible and place in a large bowl. 5. Peel and finely slice the red onion and add to the bowl along with the spinach leaves. 6. Drizzle the dressing over and then, with your hands, mix everything together, ensuring an even coating of dressing. 7. Pile the salad in a big serving bowl or board, scatter over the parmesan shavings, sprinkle over the toasted nuts, followed by the crispy rosemary. contactus@loopmagazine.net

Flying the Flag for Warsash Pupils from Hook-with-Warsash C of E Academy have enjoyed a wonderful opportunity to see Warsash from a whole new angle as they climbed more than 50 steps to enjoy the views at the top of the Warsash Clock Tower.
The children were invited to the Clock Tower by the owners, Simon and Kerry Woodham, as part of an annual competition to design a new flag to fly at the top of the tower. All of the pupils from Hook-with-Warsash Academy were invited to take part and the runners-up, and winner of the competition, were invited to the tower to see the new flag being flown. The runners-up included: Bertie E (year 4), Ffion C (year 4), Bertie W (year 1), Daisy C (year 3) and Sophie W (year 3). The winner of the competition was Francesca Nice (year 5) who was presented with an engraved clock of her own as well as some flowers kindly donated by local florist ‘Warsash Bloom’. Her ultimate prize, of course, is to have the honour of seeing her design flying at the top of the tower in the village for everyone to see. Kerry’s mother, who was invited to judge the designs and choose the winners, said, “Francesca’s design was chosen because everything about Warsash is included in her flag: the Pink ferry, the Harbour Master’s office, the church, the sea, the school, the Clock Tower, the Strawberry fields and even the lobsters’ cages are all represented in her design. Francesca has also chosen some lovely bold colours, including a beautiful sunset, for everyone to enjoy.”

Francesca said, “I am really going to enjoy seeing my flag every time I walk by the Clock Tower- I might even be able to see it from my bedroom window!” Mrs Willoughby, Headteacher of Hook-with-Warsash C of E Academy said, “The children were so excited when they found out they had been invited to visit the Tower. As a school we welcome links with the community and it is really lovely that the school are invited to take part in this competition every year. It is particularly exciting for the children to see a flag designed by one of the pupils flying at the top of the Clock Tower for everyone to see. Thank you to Simon, Kerry and her parents for welcoming us so warmly and making the children feel so special.”

But why grow underground?
we have ambitious growth plans. Above all it’s fantastic to source produce so fresh in the heart of Britain’s largest city. When I first met these guys I thought they were absolutely crazy; but when I visited the tunnels and sampled the delicious produce they are already growing down there I was blown away. The market for this produce is huge.”
OUR PRODUC
Michel Roux Jr.
Growing Underground, founded in 2014 by childhood friends from Bristol Richard Ballard and Steven Dring, sustainably grow fresh micro greens and salad in former World War Two air raid shelters 33 metres below the streets of Clapham, South London. Crops are grown year-round using the latest hydroponic systems and LED technology in the tunnels, which provide a pesticide free environment for the crops to grow in. As well as this the greens are left unaffected by external weather conditions and seasonal changes. The tunnels are also in the perfect location to distribute to customers, resulting in less export food miles and reducing the need to import crops. The company claim that they will not travel farther than the M25 to distribute their crops, resulting in an almost self-sustainable cycle.
There are a total of eight shelters dating from the Second World War in the capital at Chancery Lane on the Central Line and Belsize Park, Camden Town, Goodge Street, Stockwell, Clapham North, Clapham Common and Clapham South on the Northern Line. Work on the shelters started in November 1940 at the height of the Blitz and, when completed in 1942, each shelter was 366m long and equipped with bunks, medical posts and kitchens to harbour around 8,000 people each night.
S P R I N G 2 016
They were originally used by the government and General Eisenhower directed D-Day landings from the Goodge Street shelter in June 1944. Five of the tunnels were then opened to the public as bombing intensified in 1944. The tunnels are now owned by TfL, who rent them out to storage firms. Before they planted their herbs and vegetables, GU had to remove hundreds of bunk-beds that hadn’t been used since the Second World War.
FE E DING THE CITY Growing Underground currently only supply to wholesalers and restaurants, but are aiming to be inCITY the retail market in the FROMlocal WITHIN THE near future, meaning you could soon be purchasing the fresh
Richard Ballard said: “My business partner Steven and I have always been interested in sustainable cities, reducing energy usage and how to use redundant space in our cities, so this was the perfect opportunity for us. The advancements in LED lighting technology mean we can do this more affordably and efficiently and because we’re underground at a constant temperature we don’t need to add a lot of heat, which they often have to do in conventional farming.” The company prioritise sustainable growing practices, and are currently working on becoming carbon neutral, and claim that their unique hydroponics system uses 70% less water than traditional ‘open-field’ farming methods. Celebrity chef and British two star Michelin chef Michel Roux Jr. is also part of the board of directors. Roux immediately showed interest when he caught word of the venture. 40 | The LOOP

25,000 take part in iconic Great South Run weekend Runners signing up for next year’s 10 mile event can take advantage of 25% off their entry fees, for a limited time only. For more information, visit Greatrun.org/South It was a weekend to remember for Portsmouth and Southsea as the South Coast played host to 25,000 runners over the weekend for the Great South Run, the world’s leading 10-mile running event. Staged for the 27th time, the Great South Run comprised of four events across two days for all ages and abilities, with Chris Thompson and Tirunesh Dibaba winning the elite races on Sunday. Thompson had fallen short on his previous four attempts in Portsmouth, but used his experience of the course to spoil Andy Vernon’s homecoming party and take his first victory on the South Coast in style. The triple Olympic champion and nine-time World champion cruised home to a maiden victory, sealing an Ethiopian one-two with Dibaba taking victory in 51.49, and compatriot Senbere Teferi more than a minute behind in 52.51. Elizeba Cherono, who won last weekend’s Great Birmingham Run, was third in 53.54. Lily Partridge was the first British female over the line in 54.41. The Great South Run featured a 10 mile tour of Portsmouth, with a fast and flat course that has been graced over the years by worldclass athletes such as Mo Farah, Liz McColgan, Paula Radcliffe, and Sonia O’Sullivan.
Camberley’s Thompson clocked 47.23 with Vernon, from nearby Fareham, finishing in 48.09. Matt Sharp was third over the line in 48.18. While he was made to wait for his win, Dibaba won the women’s race on her 10-mile debut in Portsmouth.

The event, staged in the city since 1991, gave participants the unique opportunity to run through Portsmouth’s Historic Dockyard, passing iconic landmarks such as HMS Victory, HMS Warrior and the Mary Rose Museum. The weekend of sporting action began on the Saturday with the Great South Run 5K where race walker Tom Bosworth set a challenge where any runner beating his time would gain free entry into 2017’s event.
The Olympian finished in a time of 20.12, with 40 runners crossing the line before him to claim their prize for the 5K next year. Thousands of children took centre stage in the Junior and Mini Great South Run shortly afterwards on Clarence Esplanade, with Blue Peter presenter Radzi Chinyanganya entertaining the crowd. Radzi was on hand to cheer on the 2,000 children taking part in the biggest children’s running event in the south, for kids aged between three to 15 years old – where participants were encouraged to turn out in fancy dress. For the 10-mile event on Sunday, where an estimated £4million was raised by runners for charity, Olympic athletes Alan and Della Pascoe returned to Portsmouth where their athletics career began to be official starters. Alan is best known for winning Commonwealth and European gold in the 400m hurdles and Olympic silver in the 4 x 400m relay and previous British 100m record holder, while Olympic semi-finalist Della competed in the sprints at the 1968 Mexico Olympics and the 1972 Games in Munich. Olympic gold medallist sailors Hannah Mills and Saskia Clark joined the couple on the start line to set off the elite women before Alan and Della sent the runners on their way. Entries are open for the Great South Run, Great South Run 5k and the Junior and Mini Great South Run which will take place over the weekend of October 21-22 2017. Runners signing up for next year’s 10 mile event can take advantage of 25% off their entry fees, for a limited time only. For more information, visit www.Greatrun.org/South contactus@loopmagazine.net

The Rainbow Centre Welcomed Sophie Christiansen After returning home victorious from this year’s Paralympic games in Rio with three gold medals under her belt, Sophie Christiansen visits the adults and children in the Rainbow Centre in Fareham, where she is one of its patrons. The Rainbow centre provides support for children with Cerebral Palsy and adults suffering with a stroke, MS and Parkinson’s, adult Cerebral Palsy, Head Injuries and their families. Sophie, who has cerebral palsy herself, takes her role as patron very seriously. With her Sophie brought one of the gold medals she won in the Rio 2016 Paralympics, and was dressed in her Paralympic gear. The medal proved very popular with both the children and the adults at the centre, who all wanted to try the medal on. Lara Bull, CEO of The Rainbow Centre, said: “Having been encouraged, challenged and inspired through childhood Sophie understands how important it is to ensure that our children and adults believe how much can be achieved through determination, hard work and a positive mind set. This visit has given them memories they shall cherish forever. What a fantastic role model she is.”
Sophie first represented Great Britain in Athens in 2004, aged just 16, followed by Beijing, London and now Rio. Whilst Sophie was at the centre the children held their own Paralympics watched by both parents and adults, had photos taken with Sophie and sang the national anthem. The Rainbow Centre is unique in the region providing ‘conductive education’, a highly specialised form of learning to local children and adults affected by Cerebral Palsy, Stroke, Parkinson’s, Multiple Sclerosis and head injury – helping them to lead their lives as independently as possible. Melinda Bodi, Service Director, said: “We are incredibly lucky to have Sophie as our patron. She is a true inspiration to our children and adults and we are extremely grateful that she has taken time out of her very busy schedule to come to the centre and see everyone. It’s a day we will never forget”. If you would like more information about The Rainbow Centre, call 01329 289500, or email at larab@rainbowcentre.org or www.rainbowcentre.org. 44 | The LOOP

Elated Rickham and Birrell claim second SKUD18 bronze Gracious Alexandra Rickham and Niki Birrell admitted they were “elated” after matching their London 2012 feats by taking SKUD18 bronze on the final day of the Rio 2016 Paralympic regatta today (Saturday 17 September). The Brits entered the day still in with a shout for silver, trailing the Canadian duo John McRoberts and Jackie Gay by a single point. But in a ding-dong battle around the racetrack, where the positions were changing hand throughout, McRoberts and Gay ultimately sailed over the line third in the race, four seconds ahead of the Brits in fourth, to take the silver medal. Dan Fitzgibbon and Liesl Tesch (AUS) wrapped up gold with two races to spare yesterday. But with Monika Gibes and Piotr Cichocki (POL) lurking just four points off the medals in fourth spot before racing, and then taking line honours today, Rickham and Birrell couldn’t hide their delight at finishing on the podium again. Rickham and Birrell’s medal, along with Helena Lucas’ bronze in the 2.4mR, means that the British Sailing Team has achieved its pre-Rio target of two medals. Rickham said: “We feel relieved. It’s been a long, very hard week. We came here to contest for the gold, but that slipped away really quite quickly, and we’re just so happy to have got the medal. “It was close to being silver but John and Jackie sailed a fabulous regatta and they really deserved that medal. We’re just elated. It’s great to be able to come away with another medal.” Birrell continued: “To have two Paralympic medals is just surreal. They don’t come easy and I’d like to thank everyone who has ever helped us in our SKUD programme. Thank you so, so much. Now I’m looking forward to going home and seeing my wife! 50 | The LOOP

“Rio has been fantastic, we’ve really enjoyed it. To get all 11 races in is awesome. We came for gold but we’re super happy with bronze because this week we’ve had to fight so hard in our boat for every metre and every position.” As the Poles and Ryan Porteous and Maureen McKinnon (USA) rapidly raced to the front, the battle for the decisive positions was unfolding behind them with the British, Canadian, Australian and Italian boats involved in a four-way fight. After two laps of the three had been completed, Rickham and Birrell held the advantage over McRoberts and Gay, with the Brits having the one boat between them they needed to win the silver medal. But with that one boat being the Australians, who have dominated the class this week, Canada and Britain were left in a straight head-to-head to the finish line. Rickham added: “It was a really stressful race. On the start line we were really concerned because we were really close to the line so we were a bit worried we were over and we wouldn’t have known until the end. “But we had good boat speed and Niki was making some really good calls. It was really difficult on the course, up and down with massive shifts at the top of the course underneath Sugarloaf Mountain so it was anybody’s game. “Behind the Poles there must have been positional changes five or six times so it was hard but we’re really, really happy.” To follow the team’s fortunes visit www.rya.org.uk/Rio2016, follow @BritishSailing on Twitter and like us on Facebook at www. facebook.com/britishsailingteam.

Pony Magic Pony Magic was launched in April 2009 to provide a new service offering shetland pony hire and pony rides across Hampshire. A second branch was opened a year later to cover the London and Surrey areas. We have a team of adorable Shetland ponies. They are small, cute, cuddly and sometimes a bit cheeky! The Shetland pony is one of Britain’s native breeds that originate from the Shetland Islands. They are small no bigger than 10.2hh, yet extremely strong for there size, hardy, tough and full of character! Our aim is to give children (MINIMUM AGE 2) a safe and gentle introduction to riding and interacting with ponies while building confidence and having fun!
20 minute trial riding session at our base for just £10 with this ad! Invite our Shetland ponies along to your event this year to include: • Private parties • School fetes and fun days
• Village/country shows • Pantomimes and TV work
We also offer riding tuition and countryside walks for children from the age of 2. We offer a professional service and are fully licensed and insured for all our activities. Visit our website www.ponymagic.co.uk for details or call 07780 667122
Weekly pony riding tuition and countryside walks are offered at Bursledon in Hampshire (INDOOR ARENA available). We offer weekly riding sessions all year round at our Hampshire branch on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons, also Saturday mornings. These 20 minute riding sessions are designed to be fun for younger children, helping them to gain confidence in a safe environment without pressure. Our Shetland ponies are very appealing to small children and the session can consist of a countryside walk or a more structured lead rein lesson in the arena. Riding hats are provided. We also introduced a simple progress scheme, which has proved to be very popular, to recognise the achievements of our little riders and help them to progress in logical steps to more advanced riding and pony care when they are older. During the 20 minute session children can learn new things each week and collect stickers for each of 4 levels to earn rosettes and certificates! Book today for a 20 minute trial session for just £10!! Our ponies are also available to hire for many types of event, school fetes, country shows, community and charity events as well as visits to rest homes, Weddings, pantomime and TV work. For the pony mad child why not invite our gorgeous ponies along for a really special pony party with the chance to ride and make friends with the ponies in your own back garden! A typical pony party lasts for 90 minutes with 2 ponies and handlers and would be suitable for up to 20 children (aged 2-8). Generally we start by introducing the ponies to the children and allow them time to do some grooming. The children can then take turns to ride the ponies around the garden. Pricing starts at £210 and includes a colourful rosette for each child! We also have a Pony Magic shop that stocks a range of children’s riding kit and clothing also pony party bags, gifts and pony party accessories. If you are looking for ideas for a great day out why not visit one of the great farms/venues we work with where you can ride one of our ponies and look out for our regular pony activity days, details on our events page. Garden of Remembrance
£1,000 has been approved by the Allchurches Trust and the other is still being considered.
Work is now starting to create a new Garden of Remembrance at St. Mary’s Church in Warsash.
The fundraising has included a sponsored cycle ride around the 90-mile perimeter of the Diocese of Portsmouth. Retired vicar the Rev Bill Day and volunteers Peter Upward and Shaun Francis raised £1,700 towards the project – not bad considering they have a combined age of 189! Toddlers from the group meeting in the church hall also raised £400 via a sponsored toddle. There has also been a sponsored slim, Smartie tube challenge and a concert by the Starlight Singers. A quiz night will also take place on November 19. Alongside the new Garden of Remembrance will be a Book of Remembrance, which will be kept in the church. It will be mounted on three wrought iron supports similar to the church’s current altar rail. Bereaved families can ask for the names of their loved ones to be included in the Book of Remembrance if they meet one of three criteria:
Contractors are now converting an unused area of scrub land at the back of the churchyard into a tranquil garden for the interment of ashes. This will extend the use of their churchyard in future, and allow Warsash residents to remember their loved ones in the peaceful surroundings of their local churchyard. After a summer of fundraising and finalising the design, work was expected to start in mid-November. If all goes according to plan, the first interment in the new Garden of Remembrance should take place in the New Year. Worshippers have spent the summer fundraising towards the £11,500 project, and submitted two applications for grants. One of
How Clean is Your Tile? Natural Stone, Porcelain and Ceramic tiles are beautiful to look at and are worth every penny of your investment! but what happens when they get dirty? Do they lose a little of their ‘wow factor’? Are you tired of getting down on your hands and knees to scrub grout lines or have you just given up? Well, fear not for the Hampshire Tile Doctor is here to help. They offer free advice and free quotations on how to clean and restore any sort of natural stone, be it Marble, Travertine, Limestone, Terracotta, Slate, Victorian tiles, etc. Imagine your natural limestone entrance hall floor tiles, your terracotta or slate kitchen floor tiles, or your ceramic bathroom wall tiles, even your granite worktops and splash-backs being made to look as if they were freshly laid.
• their ashes are interred in the Garden of Remembrance at St. Mary’s; • they have been buried or interred elsewhere in the churchyard of St. Mary’s; • they have been buried or interred elsewhere, but they have an association with the church or parish. Entries will be at the vicar’s discretion and the church will use three different symbols in the book to indicate the category of the entry. The church is inviting a contribution of £25 for each entry to go towards the cost of building the garden, maintaining it and the costs of maintaining the entries in the Book of Remembrance. Also, have you ever noticed the difference in shade of colour of the grout at the very edge of the room, which should be almost as new and the grout in the middle of the floor? It can be surprising how, even with regular mopping, the grout always looks dirty. Why? Because the grout channel attracts dirt which mopping often glides over. So why not let The Tile Doctor clean the grout so it looks new again? The old days of mops and toothbrushes are gone forever! And what if the grout is also badly stained? No problem, they can even re-co|our the grout for you from a range of subtle colours. After the cleaning process they apply a professional coating of an impregnating sealer, which sinks into the tile and/or grout and gives an invisible protective barrier that will leave your floors so much easier to clean. Sadly, some tile fitters never seal the tiles or grout they lay, which means you could damage your floor by spilling some everyday products you have in your kitchen or bathroom.

The USA with Amity Travel The USA continues to be a top seller in the UK tourist market and it is easy to see why with such stunning scenery, awe inspiring canyons and some of the world’s most Iconic manmade structures. With so much to see, holidays in the USA tend to be multi centre itineraries, and one of the best ways to get around is by car, with the low cost of fuel, the plentiful supply of hotels and motels along the popular routes and reasonably uncongested roads (outside of the big cities), it all makes for a great adventure.
At Amity Travel we find the most popular self-drive holidays to be to the Canyon lands and National Parks of the Western States and/or the Pacific Coast. Amity Travel have been tailoring such holidays to suite your own personal requirements for many years and can not only save you time and money but take away all the stress of arranging such complicated itineraries. You may well be thinking that such a full on itinerary is not going to be cheap, but it does not have to cost an arm and a leg either, with some great deals on flights outside of the school holidays and with a mixture of 4 star city hotels, National park lodges and motel accommodation it can work out very reasonable indeed. For the best of the west as well as ideas on east coast itineraries, USA Rail holidays, ranching holidays, not to forget Florida, call the Tailor made experts at Amity Travel today.

First acts announced for the 2017 Wickham Festival The Levellers; 10cc; Seth Lakeman; The Selecter; Show of Hands and The Fisherman’s Friends are among the first artists confirmed for next year’s Wickham Festival. The award-winning 4-day Festival will once again be held on fields just outside the village of Wickham on the first weekend in August, Thursday 3rd to Sunday 6th August 2017. Next year’s Wickham Festival will be the 10th staged in Wickham and Festival organisers are promising return bookings for many of the most popular acts to have performed at previous events. As well as the artists mentioned above, other acts already confirmed include The Dhol Foundation; Lau; Eliza Carthy & The Wayward Band; 3 Daft Monkeys; Oysterband and The Goat Roper Rodeo Band. The 7,000-capacity Festival will have live music on four stages plus a host of other attractions including storytelling; street theatre; dance displays; a ceilidh; childrens entertainers; a digital funfair; laser arena; traditional crafts fayre; exotic foods fayre; Real Ale & Cider Festival and Late Night Festival Club. The Wickham Festival attracts an audience from across Britain and Europe with people also travelling from North America and even Australia to attend. It’s estimated to be worth over £1 million to the local economy with shops, pubs, restaurants, hotels, taxi firms, petrol stations and infrastructure suppliers all benefitting. Festival organiser Peter Chegwyn says he hopes to make the 10th Festival to be staged in Wickham the best yet. “Our reputation for being a very safe, relaxed and family-friendly Festival means our audience is increasing every year. Musicians love performing here because the crowds are so enthusiastic while the local community seem to have embraced the Festival and enjoy the life and business it brings to the area.” ‘Earlybird’ weekend season tickets are now onsale. Anyone buying before the end of December can save £40 on every adult ticket, £20 on under-16 tickets, with under-10s gaining free entry. Full details of next year’s event and how to buy tickets online or in person can be found on the Festival website. 64 | The LOOP

Seaside Cat Hotel At the Seaside Cat Hotel, we aim to give our guests a relaxing, luxury experience, a real home from home. The Hotel has been carefully designed around the needs of our feline guests, and is fully compliant with latest licencing conditions.
Package Options We offer two packages to enable our guests to have the purrfect holiday with additional upgrade options for cat holiday heaven. Our Four-star package is inclusive of meals from the Captains Table Menu selected to our guests’ personal taste. Our attention and celebrity style service come as standard, with the individual needs of each guest being our priority.
All our rooms are divided into a private heated cabin for relaxing and an individual promenade area to stretch your legs, enjoy some birdwatching or sleep in the sunshine. We offer two all-inclusive packages incorporating our regular Captain’s Table Menu. For a touch of luxury why not enjoy the Five Star option which includes our Bedtime Butler Service. In addition, you can upgrade your package to include a Gourmet Dining Day or as a special treat, our feline Afternoon Tea Tasting Experience is the ideal choice. Our aim is that each guest will have the perfect holiday, and return home relaxed and rejuvenated. We always provide each guest with a small gift to take home for Mum and Dad.
Accommodation All of our deluxe rooms are en-suite, have a daily maid service and an evening steward. This ensures that our guests have all they need during the day and overnight. A daily massage, grooming session and personal trainer led activity are included in the daily timetable. Cabin facilities include a cosy relaxation pod, an open bed to doze and a massage centre, for a rub in those hard to reach places. All cabins have an aromatherapy diffuser designed for felines to help our guests relax and chill out while away from home. For a restful sleep we provide our guests with soft bedding and bespoke handmade quilts to snuggle into. All cabins have thermostatically controlled heating, to maintain a warm homely feel whatever the weather. Each promenade area is exclusive and not accessible by other guests. If you wish to relax in private the lower areas have solid divisions. To see what everyone else is doing and nosy at the other guests, the higher areas are slightly more public. For a good view of the hotel gardens and to enable birdwatching, each promenade area has its own lookout tower. This is also a great place for a spot of sunbathing,
For that extra touch of holiday luxury, the Five-star package could be just what you are looking for. All meals are selected from the Captains Table menu, along with our Bedtime Butler Service. As a nightly treat, our Bedtime Butler will bring a milky drink designed for felines and some tasty nibbles, to end the day in style. Who doesn’t like something special at bedtime!
Upgrade Options At the Seaside Cat Hotel we aim to offer luxury options for our guests. To enhance your holiday why not upgrade and add a Gourmet Dining Day or the ultimate treat a Feline Afternoon Tea.
The Gourmet Dining Day The Gourmet Dining Day menu has been carefully selected and taste tested by our resident food critics Eric (the Ginger) and Evie (the Tabby). They have selected meals created by Canagans or Natures Menu Country Hunter for our guests. The dry kibble chosen by our taste testers for this luxury dining experience is a Canagans choice. This is grain free and comes in two varieties, free range chicken or Scottish Salmon. Both varieties offer at least 70% meat content along with carefully selected vegetable and botanicals for balanced nutrition. We will carefully select the accompanying wet meal choices for you. If it becomes obvious that our guests are not enjoying the choice we make, we will keep offering a different recipe until our guest decides which one is their favourite.
Feline Afternoon Tea If our guests are celebrating a special occasion, or want to have a one-off luxury meal, the Feline Afternoon Tea, with new and exciting sweet treats to try is ideal. These irresistible meals combine fruit and meat, and our guests love them. A selection from the following interesting recipes is carefully selected for the ultimate tasting experience; Chicken with Pineapple, Tuna with Papaya, Chicken with Apple, Tuna with Mango.

About Us
The Seaside Cat Hotel has been developed with the input of the whole family, including Eric (the Ginger) and Evie (the Tabby), our resident food critics. While our guests are with us they become part of our family, and are given lots of love and cuddles, or peace and quiet if that’s what they want. I now have my dream job, looking after animals I adore. I have lots of new cats to love, some to get clean, healthy and with new loving families. Others to pamper and return to their parents happy, healthy and relaxed.
The Team Linda is the first point of contact should any of our guests need anything at all. She is always popping into their rooms to check they are enjoying their stay, and is the main provider of all the services at the hotel. All maintenance at the hotel is done by Nigel and when at the hotel loves to meet the guests. He will take on various duties around the hotel when help is needed, in accordance with Linda’s exacting standards, or else! Our resident food critics Eric (the ginger) and Evie (the tabby) take their job very seriously, and can often be found sleeping on the sofa after a busy taste testing session.
As my family grew up and spread their wings, I finally had some time for myself. My true crazy cat lady was making a bid for freedom, and I had persuaded my ever tolerant husband to agree to have a Cats Protection foster shelter in our garden. We both found it so rewarding to nurture a cat back to health or encourage a timid cat to become more confident. Once our work is done, off they go with a kiss, to a new forever home.
Terms And Conditions
A seed was sown, and the idea of offering a safe, secure, modern, luxury Hotel for cats to stay while their Mum and Dad are away from home, was born. We wanted our Hotel to offer a personal service, and in order that we can get to know our guests and be able to adapt to their individual needs we decided to only have six double rooms. They are each carefully designed to give a calm and relaxing environment, a real cat holiday heaven.
To ensure we have the most up-to-date information about our guests a completed booking form must be received on or before the first day of the stay.
Our minimum stay is 3 days. Check in and check out days are included to give peace of mind if you are delayed arriving or departing. A deposit of £39.00 (equal to our minimum 3 day stay) secures a booking. We kindly ask that this is paid within 14 days of the booking being made. The balance remaining is payable at the end of the stay.
Unfortunately, guests from different households cannot share a room. If a booking is cancelled less than 8 weeks before the first day of the stay, we will be unable to refund the deposit.

Aisle be slimmer After looking at her holiday pictures Louise knew she had to do something about her weight. The time had come to face her weight demons. That week she attended her nearest slimming world group and has not looked back since. Louise has spent her whole life being the “fat friend” but after struggling to find clothes for her holiday it was beginning to affect her confidence and life. Louise works as a pharmacy technician and being on her feet all day it was beginning to affect her health with bad knees and aching joints. Louise had tried to diet before but always felt hungry and never seemed to lose anything.
Some of their favourites were bolognaise, cottage pie, fish and chips and homemade burgers. They now plan their week of menus and found it actually saved them money. Louise explained “by cooking from scratch it was saving a lot of money and batch cooking always helped when Greg was away.” At the end of the day if you were hungry there was always something you can eat without coming off plan. You can still enjoy life, enjoy meals out, take always, alcohol and eat chocolate. It just helps you make healthier choices.
At her heaviest Louise was 16stone 5lbs and it was time to do something about it. The consultant at her local group instantly welcomed Louise “I was worried about walking through the door on my own, wondered if I would be the biggest one there and would I be laughed at, but I couldn’t have been more wrong.” The group was so welcoming and it had such a buzz to it, everyone was celebrating great losses and giving support to those with disappointing results with the emphasis of drawing a line under it and having a fresh start. By food optimising Louise started to lose weight. In her first week she lost 6lbs. “I couldn’t believe it I didn’t feel like I was on a diet, I never went hungry.” A few months into the plan Louise felt happy in herself again, developed more energy and her knees and joints stopped hurting. That summer Greg (her now husband) proposed to her and this gave Louise the extra incentive to fit into her dream dress. Food became a joy for the first time ever. She didn’t feel guilty by having large portions and finally started cooking meals from scratch. Greg was so supportive and would always get the slimming world magazines or recipe books out to try new meals.
Louise believes staying to group kept her motivated and on track. She has met some wonderful people, who have inspired and helped along the way, and are now lifetime friends. Sticking to plan Louise managed to lose 4 stone 7lbs in 10 months and reached her target weight all in time for her first wedding dress fitting. Trying on dresses she always thought she would have a layered dress to hide the weight but trying on dresses she couldn’t believe she would wear a dress to show off her new figure. Louise’s only regret was not joining slimming world sooner. I will never forget on my wedding day family saying how amazing I looked and if it wasn’t for the wedding dress they wouldn’t have recognised me. I felt like a new person. Louise had enjoyed her journey so much she decided to become a slimming world consultant so that she can help and support others to feel good and reach there own goals. Louise’s advice to others is “don’t hesitate pop along to your local group, it will change your life for the good.”

If I can share my experience, expertise and knowledge to ensure Alex has the best possible training, then I have done my bit to give something back to my profession as a financial advisor - which has been a great career for me personally. “To help Alex to work with ideas to acquire clients and provide them with outstanding service is very satisfying. I personally think that if there were more professional service providers willing to share knowledge, people could be assured of high standards across every professional industry.” Clegg believes that during this time of economic instability and uncertainty, it is the perfect time for qualified professionals to take the lead in ensuring that best practice becomes the standard for the industry.

When a marriage or relationship breaks down the parties have to divide between them the assets (or debts) they have accumulated. But what if they cannot agree - how can they avoid the trauma and expense of arguing the matter before a Court? First, nothing can be finalised without both parties making complete disclosure of their assets. Some people might not like this but there is no realistic alternative. Therefore, be prepared to produce copies of pay slips, bank statements, shares and building society accounts and anything else showing what money you have and where it is. It must be up to date. Secondly, remember that the children come first. They almost certainly did when you were together and that will not change just because you are now divorcing. The children will need somewhere to live. The parent they live with will need an income to provide for the children. Thirdly, get good legal advice early on from some one who is a specialist. In today’s world changes come about quickly and you need up to the minute expert advice. Perhaps you do not feel ready to take any action but need advice to understand exactly where you stand. We are good listeners and will give you balanced, considered advice to help you to have the confidence to make the decision which is right for you. Stagecoach Fareham and Hedge End has been running for over 13 years and in that time the school has had the privilege to develop some wonderful talents. Each week over 200 students aged 6-18 attend our Main Stages classes and receive an hours training of each of the three disciplines of singing, dancing and drama by teachers, all of whom have a background in performing professionally. We currently run four Main School classes; Thursday 5pm-8pm at Bridgemary School in Gosport, Friday 4.30pm-7.30pm at Wildern School in Hedge End and Saturday 10am-1pm and 2pm-5pm at Whiteley Primary School in Whiteley. We also offer Early Stages classes for 4-6 year olds, at all three venues, which provides students with 30 minutes introductory training in each discipline. Taking classes in singing, dance and drama has been proven to build a child’s self-esteem and confidence, giving them skills they can use to only in performance but in everyday life. We pride ourselves on helping each child develop at their own pace and providing a friendly environment where children can learn, d evelop and most of all have fun.
own performance troupes. Over the years our students have performed in many theatres including The Mayflower Theatre in Southampton, Kings Theatre in Southsea and Her Majesty’s Theatre in London’s West End. This December, 16 students are making the trip to Shaftesbury Theatre in London to take part in Stagecoach’s Annual Charity Gala, an invitation only event celebrating some of the best ‘stand out’ performances over the course of the year, highlighting students’ achievements whilst raising money for Charity. The group of students aged 10-16 will be performing an 8-minute piece including songs from the musical Annie that they first performed at Her Majesty’s Theatre in November 2015.
Over an academic year Main School and Early Stages students get to experience a Skills Term where we invite outside companies in to do workshops and focus on honing specific skills in each discipline, a Demo Term where students work towards producing pieces to show to parents at the end of term showcase and our end of year Show Term. All Main School students will get the experience of performing on a stage with professional sound and lighting, whilst our Early Stages students get their first taste of costumes and make-up.
We will also be returning to Shaftesbury in April 2017. Over 45 students aged 11-18 years from across all four of our Main schools, auditioned for a place in the performance troupe who will travel to London to perform two 8 minute pieces; one based on the musical Les Miserables and the other focussing on Motown Music. 28 successful students began rehearsals in November this year ready for the performance in Spring.
We also offer additional performance opportunities for those students who show a real wish to be involved in the theatre be this through professional touring productions approaching us for children to perform in their shows or through our

Memorial garden unveiled at Defence Diving School A dedication service for Royal Navy Clearance Divers (RNCD), has been held at the newly unveiled special memorial garden created at the Defence Diving School (DDS), Portsmouth. The project to create the memorial garden began two years ago when the Chairman of the Royal Navy Clearance Divers Association (RNCDA), Warrant Officer Steve Vernon, together with DDS staff, forged the idea. The RNCDA was formed a little over 6 years ago, but had previously existed between 1947 and 1960. The idea behind creating this dedicated area at the Horsea Island site is to remember all former RNCDs who have lost their lives. With no real idea of where to begin, Steve made contact with Fareham College who have students on course who are required to spend a certain amount of time with industry to develop their skills. Identifying students on the landscaping and builders courses, Steve worked with the college to bring students on to the site to create this special area, with the Association raising funds for all the materials along the way. The students who completed the work attended the service held in October, together with former and current RNCDs, which included several who had been divers during the Second World War together with members of the earlier Association. Captain Jim Nisbet, a Navy Diver, was the Guest of Honour at the event, and unveiled the plaque at the garden. Addressing the guests at the service, he said: “I am truly honoured, delighted and humbled to be here today and to be asked to unveil this memorial garden plaque. It is a magnificent and long overdue memorial to the branch, great credit to the Association for making this happen.”

Hampshire Search and Rescue mark 500th call-out The Lord-Lieutenant of Hampshire and Assistant Chief Constable have congratulated the Hampshire Search and Rescue team (HANTSAR) on their 500th call-out since starting out back in 2003. The voluntary Lowland Rescue organisation was founded to support the Hampshire Constabulary in the search for vulnerable missing persons, and have now assisted the police on 500 occasions in the search for missing persons. HM Lord-Lieutenant of Hampshire, Nigel Atkinson Esq, said: “I was delighted to recently receive an update from Hampshire Search & Rescue and, as always, I am very impressed with the commitment the volunteers give to the local community in Hampshire. Since 2003 they have continued to support Hampshire Constabulary in the search for vulnerable missing persons, and have always provided great a great assistance and service.”
“We are very lucky to compete at the level that we do and we wouldn’t be there if it weren’t for the team of wonderful people that surrounds us. With very little prize money in F1 sidecars, we are heavily reliant on our sponsors’ generosity to enable us to follow our dreams. We are extremely grateful for Jim Gildea and Total Waste Removal’s unconditional support throughout this season, we couldn’t have done it without them.” Ricky Stevens & Ryan Charlwood, October 2016
HANTSAR is also a registered charity, and was awarded with the very prestigious Queens Award for Voluntary Service back in 2011. Tony Privett, HANTSAR Chairman, said: “We are extremely proud of all our volunteers, past and present, who have attended on 500 occasions to assist the police to search for vulnerable missing people. The commitment shown by our volunteers is amazing especially when you consider, as well as attending searches day or night, in sunshine, rain or snow and anywhere in Hampshire, they also fund all their own costs for travel and equipment. “I would like to take the opportunity at this 500th milestone to thank all of our current and previous members for their dedication to helping the people of Hampshire.”

P&O Round up Out with the old and in with the new for P&O ferries this month, as the cruise companies ships get innovative updates in food and entertainment.
The new menus, which will be available across the fleet on the black tie evenings, comprise some of Marco Pierre White’s favourite dishes prepared in a fresh and exciting way in order to provide a flavour of the most popular ports of call. These include:
Looking forward, a major new entertainment hub called The Dome will be among the star attractions to feature on the biggest cruise ship built for Britain.
• Poached Hampshire Chalk Stream trout with caper mayonnaise served with fennel, cucumber, smoked halibut and brown shrimp salad
Featuring an impressive clear sky dome, a pool with a retractable stage, water feature and whirlpools, The Dome will act as an allweather venue for all day entertainment and informal dining.
• Crispy pork cheek with chorizo patatas bravas
At night The Dome – one of four primary entertainment spaces on P&O Cruises new 180,000 ton ship – will come alive with aerial performances, projection onto the roof and immersive shows.
• Salt Marsh lamb loin with mint, garlic and chicken mousseline
An uninterrupted half-mile Promenade around the ship on Deck 8 provides easy access to al fresco dining at a range of restaurants and relaxation areas under shaded pavilion awnings. Cutting-edge designers and architects will work on creating the next generation ship, the first new-build in five years when it enters service in early summer 2020. Celebrated Broadway star Ruthie Henshall is set to bring the West End & Broadway to P&O Cruises ship Arcadia with an original new stage show; Money Makes The World Go Round. The show is based around the music of acclaimed song-writing duo Kander and Ebb, and features popular songs from shows such as Cabaret, Chicago and Flora the Red Menace. In addition to the iconic songs the show will be underpinned by interwoven musical themes drawn from the Kander and Ebb repertoire, and performed by a band configured to recreate a 1920’s ‘jazz orchestra’ feel. Meanwhile in the kitchen renowned chef Marco Pierre White has created a series of new gala dinner menus combining British tradition with a sense of occasion, using local and speciality ingredients.

My next position was at New Park Garage in Locks Heath where I put all my training to full use, acquiring a greater range of vehicle knowledge.
Later I was given the opportunity to move to Cheltenham with a Lancia Fiat franchise as their Workshop Foreman. I was soon promoted to Service Manager and then General Manager dealing with all three of their franchises. In 1992 I decided to move back to the Southampton area to start my own business. Having been based in Botley for the past 21 years, I have now built up a good local client base, many of whom have stayed loyal throughout the years. In 1999 I applied to the Ministry of Transport to become an M.O.T testing station which was very thorough and after a short wait we were approved as a registered Vehicle Testing Station. In 2007 we were nominated to become a Checkatrade company and at this point also decided to become a Limited Company. During the company’s growth there have been many challenges and I wish to thank so many of my clients who have stayed loyal with their support. We now look forward to the future and to welcoming new customers assuring them of our best and reasonably priced service.

Local astronaut receives honorary Doctorate at the University of Portsmouth At Portsmouth Guildhall on the 2nd of November astronaut Tim Peake spoke about ‘The mystery and magic of space and what’s yet to be discovered’ at an event, hosted by the University. Tim was awarded an honorary Doctor of Science by Vice-chancellor Professor Graham Galbraith. Speaking about his six-month mission aboard the ISS and how he conducted scientific experiments on behalf of the international community. Tim graduated from the University of Portsmouth in 2006 with a BSc in flight dynamics and evaluation prior to him being selected as an astronaut for his six-month mission aboard the space station. Professor Galbraith said while awarding Tim the Degree “It’s a great honour for us to welcome one of our most celebrated alumni back to the University for this prestigious event…“It gives me great pleasure to award Tim with an honorary degree. This is the highest honour a university can bestow on a member of the public.” Tim considered it a team award, in recognition of the work of support he received by countless people and colleagues making his mission possible: “What a huge honour it is to receive that degree and it is made even more special as I received my first degree from the University of Portsmouth 10 years ago. His address to the 1,500 audience was hosted on stage by University astronomer Dr Jen Gupta “Unfortunately that 10 years isn’t an indication of how youthful I am but indicates that I attained a degree later in life at the grand old age of 34, showing you can still achieve your goals later on in life.” Tim spoke of his passion for discovery in physical and life sciences, detailing experiments on inanimate things and on
himself. Adding because of such experiments, we were getting closer all the time to being able to send humans into space further and for longer. “Solving the problem of how we can survive long-term in space makes a human mission to Mars within our grasp.” When Tim was asked by a member of the audience if he hoped to go into space for a second time, he laughed and said: “I’m available for work, but I have to wait my turn. It may take another two to three years.”
The results of a schools experiment led by Tim Peake have been released Six hundred thousand school children have discovered that seeds that have been in space grow almost as well as those that have stayed on Earth. Suggesting vibrations during launch, temperature changed, cosmic rays and microgravity were not able to prevent seeds from germinating and growing after exposure. Children from 8,600 schools and other children’s organisations such as the scouts and guides across the UK received seeds of the salad plant “rocket” that had flown in space for six months. The children grew them alongside the ‘control’ rocket seeds which had remained on Earth. The findings indicated that, on average, the space seeds grew less well than seeds that had remained on Earth – albeit ‘very slightly’. This experiment provides further support that rocket seeds can be flown and stored on the ISS for six months without having any significant impacts on their ability to germinate and grow on Earth. “Of course, the environment and cultivation conditions are very different in space than on Earth, but this is the first step in knowing that astronauts have the potential to grow their own food for long duration space missions.”

Saturn’s Rings Shine in Spectacular Photos Cassini launched in 1997 and arrived in the Saturn system in 2004. The spacecraft will continue studying the ringed planet and its many moons through September 2017, when Cassini will perform an intentional death dive into Saturn’s thick atmosphere. The $3.2 billion Cassini-Huygens mission is a collaboration involving NASA, the European Space Agency and the Italian Space Agency. NASA’s Cassini spacecraft captured this detailed image of the structure of Saturn’s rings.
Sue Biggs, the RHS’s director general said that the rocket science experiment “celebrates the creativity, curiosity and independent thinking of children and young people across the UK, as well the teachers and leaders who inspire them”. The results of this experiment will be useful to scientists trying to find ways of growing food in space as more than 320,000 individual measurements were collected - making the experiment scientifically robust and one of the most detailed of its kind ever carried out.

The structure of Saturn’s iconic rings has been revealed by NASA in amazing detail in a stunning new photo by Cassini spacecraft. Individual ringlets are visible in the photo, which Cassini captured on the 24th of September, when the probe was roughly 456,000 km from Saturn and positioned 4 degrees above the ring plane. In the photo the ringlets display is varied, and NASA officials said that it is unknown why this occurs. “Ring scientists are debating the nature of these features — whether they have always appeared this way, or if their appearance has evolved over time,” NASA officials wrote. Saturn’s rings are composed of 90-95% water ice. Scientists aren’t sure where the rings originally came from but many
theories exist to their creation from remnants of icy moons or even pieces of dwarf planets that strayed too close to the giant planet four billion years ago, during a period known as the Late Heavy Bombardment.

Downhill all the way for two Sarisbury Junior School Pupils! Sarisbury Junior School has been celebrating the success of two of their pupils who have recently been selected by the English Schools Ski Association (ESSKIA) to join the 2017 English Schools Primary Ski squad. Sarisbury started a school ski team two years ago and have been competing in regional slalom races and have been steadily growing their squad, picking up podium positions and competing against other established regional skiing schools at the Southampton Alpine Ski Centre. This latest success, came as a big surprise to pupils Abi Miles (year six) and Geno Hounsham ( year five) when Mr Stockton the headmaster announced the great news during a school assembly. The two children will now spend time with their new National squad members at the Hemel Hemstead Indoor Ski centre in January and will also travel to the Netherlands to train at Snoworld one of Europe’s largest indoor Ski centres. The ESSkIA Primary squad is the first stepping stone for young skiers who can eventually progress, if selected through the Junior and Senior Ranks and eventually a chosen few compete at the ISF World Schools ski Championships. The school is very proud of their achievements and wish them every success their sporting venture.

Pupils on the road to safety Recently HMS Collingwood’s onsite Nursery received a visit from 2 of the establishment’s Royal Navy Police (RNP). The RNP made their way across the naval base to Woodentots Nursery ready to give an interactive and educational session to the 3-4 year old pupils. The aim of the activity was to enforce the Road Safety Campaign within the local community, whilst allowing the children to engage with personnel to change the cultural attitude towards the Police from an early age.
The children having an interactive session on learning to cross the road safely.
Master at Arms (MAA) Marie Bradley and Leading Regulator (LReg) Sophie Hurlo began by discussing road safety to the children, demonstrating how to safely cross the road and explaining each meaning of the three traffic light colours. MAA Marie Bradley commented “It’s great to engage with the children to promote road safety and it also helps to build the familiarity between them and the Police.” After the Woodentots pupils had mastered their safety skills, they had the chance to explore an RNP vehicle, followed by getting messy with some finger printing on DNA cards. Freeing up Space on your Hard Drive after the Windows 10 updates… As some of you may have noticed, Windows has rolled out another update for its latest operating system. This has changed the appearance of the Start menu, and given a new Notification panel. What you may not have noticed, is that it has kept a copy of the entire Windows folder on your hard drive. Microsoft did a similar thing when they first introduced Windows 10, adding a Windows.old folder into your local drive. This time however, they have made it slightly harder to get rid of… First, search for “Disk Cleanup” in the search bar, then click on “Disk Cleanup”. A dialogue box will appear prompting you to select which drive you wish to clean (see Image 1) Usually this will be the C:.
Image 3
Clearing the files can take some time (See Image 3), depending on the size, so bear with it. As you can see from Image 2, the “Previous Windows Installation” folder is over 20GB in size, so this will free up quite a lot of space!!
Quick Tip - Ghostery One of my favourite browser extensions, Ghostery, lets you block trackers that haunt you when you visit a web page. These tools hide in the background and tell advertising companies and social media sites, that you are on that site. For example, when I visited www.dailymail.co.uk, Ghostery listed 20 trackers.
Image 1
Ghostery’s new update (Version 7) adds a vital warning when you are blocking a tracker a web page needs in order to function properly. Several other changes have also been made, most being cosmetic, but don’t worry, the basic operation is still the same. When you visit a website, the blue Ghostery icon at the top right of your browser displays the number of trackers it has found. Click this to see which trackers it has caught. Ghostery 7 is available on Opera, Chrome, Internet Explorer and Firefox and can be found by visiting www.ghostery.com. Don’t forget that you can always contact us for free impartial advice. Just give us a call at Hypersonic for hardware and software support, tuition, web design, data retrieval, commercial and home networking, all with an efficient and friendly service. Call Wayne or Gareth at Hypersonic IT 01489 582666. Email: wayne@hypersonic.co.uk
Image 2
Once you have selected the drive, another dialogue box will appear. Select “Clean up system files”. Now you will have a list of items that you can select and remove. From this window, you can delete “Temporary Windows Installation Files” and “Previous Windows Installations”. Remember that if you do this, you will be unable to go back to the previous version of Windows. You can also clear the “Recycle Bin” from this screen.

Together we can make a difference Community spirit was in full force at Hook-with-Warsash C of E Academy as volunteers pulled together to tidy the school’s environmental area. Parents, staff, pupils and friends were invited to the school to help tidy up the area which includes a pond, meadowland, woodland and sensory garden. The area is open to local community groups to use and is frequently visited by local pre-schools and Scout groups. A new addition to the Environmental Area includes a Storyteller’s chair to encourage children to share stories and develop their confidence as they talk in front of the class. The children had a wonderful time digging, clearing, chopping and even planting new plants. The volunteers were well-fed by the school’s PTFA volunteers who provided a tasty range of goodies to keep the troops motivated. Headteacher Sara Willoughby said, “I am always overwhelmed by the people who give up their Sunday morning to help with our Dig Days. They have been an amazing difference to the area. We still have some areas that need to be developed and are seeking funding for this. We would like to invite any local groups who are interested to come and use the area which also includes an Environmental classroom which has some resources for ponddipping and identification charts. We still have some areas that need to be developed with some hard-landscaping but this will be a big project and we are seeking funding for this.” The local Co-op store is already is helping Hook-with-Warsash Academy to raise funds and already members of the Co-op have helped raised over £800 towards the development of the Environmental area. Each member is issued with a membership card and when buying Co-op own-brand food they can select a local charity to support. Hook-with-Warsash is the only school in the area to have struck this arrangement with the UK wide retailer. It means that 1 per cent of every purchase can go to the school, to raise valuable

funds. The money raised will go towards renovating the much valued school environmental area, which headteacher Sara Willoughby opened as the youngest teacher on the staff in 1990. “This sizeable space is a fantastic way of introducing our pupils to the wonders of nature,” explains Sara. “It’s an area where the children can discover about bugs by hunting for them. It is also available to the wider community by being wheelchair and blind friendly thanks to intelligent landscaping. Unfortunately over time the planters, which are at wheelchair height, have decayed and it needs refreshing.” Nick Crofts, President of the Co-op Member Council, adds: “We aim to do business a better way, and what better way than to give back to communities as a reward for shopping with us. Our members have a unique opportunity to make a difference locally simply by using their Co-op card when they shop with us. Co-ops are here to support their members and the communities they live in, and the money raised will provide much needed funding for Warsash C of E Academy which contributes to improving local life.” The school has received quotes for up to £10,000 to do this work. Mrs Willoughby is keen to hear from any local businesses wishing to further support this project. Sara can be reached on: admin@hookwithwarsash.co.uk or tel. 01489 572393.

Community News Stubbington & Hill Head Voluntary Care Group
West Hill Park Community Choir
As Public Transport has become much depleted and with fewer routes available, Members of our Communities have found it more and more difficult to attend their Medical Appointments, not just to Hospital but also to Dentists, Opticians, Podiatrists and Physiotherapists and even G.P.’s Surgeries. This does not only apply to the Elderly who no longer have their own transport but to younger people temporarily incapacitied. We have a very efficient Group of drivers in Stubbington who have provided service to take Members of the Community to their appointments, wait for them and return them home with just the petrol cost (based on mileage) to contribute.
Sunday 4th December, 4.00pm, Crofton Old Church (off Titchfield Road, Stubbington) – a concert given by West Hill Park Community Choir in aid of Church funds. Entry is free - Donations welcome.
Our Group has been in existance for over 25 years and is much appreciated and indeed copied. However it can only continue so efficiently by new volunteers joining as the long serving drivers have to retire. If you can donate a few hours occasionally, at your choice, and with no cost to yourself, and if you like to assist members of your local Community, then just contact our Duty Co-Ordinator on 07074 775112 (Mon-Fri. 9.00-6.00pm) who will pass on your offer and you will be contacted. We also offer a Befriender Service for the Housebound or to give temporary short term respite for a Carer to pop out for a short time and we would welcome additions to that group, especially men for visits to those who prefer to chat about sport rather than shopping.

For 145 years St Mary’s Parish Church has been offering all parishioners a place where their loved ones can be laid to rest, and where they can come to remember them, to reflect and pray. The churchyard is now almost full, but the Parochial Church Council has been working on ideas to prevent the community being deprived of this treasured facility. The most striking one will be the creation of the Warsash Garden of Remembrance at the east end of the church, where ashes can be scattered and people can still come for tranquil recollection. There will be no memorials on the site, but a Book of Remembrance will be kept in the church where names will be recorded. However, this will involve a significant amount of work in re-ordering and clearing the churchyard, as well as creating a place in the church for the Book of Remembrance, and the designing and planting of the Garden itself. This has been estimated to cost almost £11,000. With no extra funding existing for this, the church is working hard to raise the money. hoping to involve the community in this important local project.

What’s On Shane Richie and Jessie Wallace Launch Mayflower Theatre’s Pantomime Extravaganza Robin Hood! Staged at Mayflower Theatre for the first time, Robin Hood is produced by Qdos Entertainment, the world’s biggest pantomime producer, and the company behind last year’s record-breaking production of Aladdin. Featuring Mayflower Theatre’s hallmark of outstanding entertainment Robin Hood will be packed full of action, adventure and comedy with plenty of glitz and glamour for theatregoers of all ages. Michael Harrison, Managing Director of Qdos Entertainment’s Pantomimes said “We are thrilled to be bringing Shane and Jessie together to star alongside each other in pantomime for the first time. Mayflower Theatre audiences are in for an unmissable production full of laughter, music, special effects and a fantastic 3D sequence.”
Swapping soap-land for the shores of Southampton, the muchloved EastEnders stars Shane Richie and Jessie Wallace launched this year’s spectacular family pantomime Robin Hood at Mayflower Theatre, which runs from 17th December 2016 – 8th January 2017. Having established themselves as one of the nation’s favourite partnerships during their time playing Alfie and Kat in EastEnders, Shane and Jessie have won numerous awards and millions of fans for their portrayal of Walford’s much-loved couple. Robin Hood marks their first pantomime together with Shane in the title role of Robin Hood and Jessie as the beautiful Maid Marion. Shane Richie’s numerous television credits include Oliver Twist, Skins, New Tricks, Minder, What We Did on Our Holidays, Making Dad’s Army and Benidorm but is best known for his role of Alfie Moon on BBC1’s longest-running soap, a part written especially for him. Shane has also hosted a number of high-profile gameshows including the primetime lottery quiz Win Your Wish List and Decimate. Jessie Wallace has become a national treasure thanks to her performance as Kat Slater in EastEnders. Her other television credits include ITV’s The Bill and Wild at Heart and her critically acclaimed leading role in Miss Marie Lloyd - Queen of the Music Hall for BBC Four. Earlier this year Shane and Jessie toured in Peter James’ The Perfect Murder and recently completed filming their own six-part drama series based on their EastEnders characters’ lives in Ireland. Joining them in Southampton’s premier pantomime will be sitcom and pantomime star Jeffrey Holland, last seen at Mayflower Theatre in Jack and the Beanstalk in 2012, as Nurse Nancy. Jeffrey has delighted television audiences for decades in his hilarious appearances in iconic British television shows such as Hi-de-Hi!, You Rang M’Lord? and Oh, Doctor Beeching! as well as starring in numerous pantomimes for Qdos Entertainment. Completing the cast will be West End star Pete Gallagher as the evil Sheriff of Nottingham, comedian Peter Piper as Friar Tuck, illusionist Phil Hitchcock as Merlin, actors Jamie Kenna and Danny Potts as Little John and Will Scarlet and musical theatre star Ashleigh Gray as the Spirit of Sherwood, last seen at Mayflower Theatre in the leading role of Elphaba in Wicked two years ago. They will be joined by The Acromaniacs as Robin’s band of Merry Men. 96 | The LOOP
