Swanwick Marina Boat Show 2017 Premier Marinas, owner and operator of nine marinas on the South Coast, gets set for two shows in one as it confirms it will be holding a Motorboat and RIB Show at Swanwick Marina on both Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th March from 10.00am to 4.00pm, with a second pre-season show focusing on bigger boats. The Motorboat and RIB 2017 show will be a showcase for all types of stackable boats up to 11 metres, including new and used sports boats, RIBS and small fishing boats. The free event will also showcase Swanwick Marina’s dry stack facility, which can hold up to 80 boats. Premier’s staff will also be on hand to talk about Premier Marinas dry stack facilities at Gosport and Falmouth Marina in Cornwall. Besides boats and watercraft for sale there will also be advice on motorboat training and insuring your craft; a range of electronics and Premier will be inviting visitors to take part in a free prize draw to win a year’s dry stack berthing for a boat up to 8m. Alongside this show, Premier will also be running a Pre-season Boat Show over the weekend,
where onsite brokerages will showcase a range of new and used power and sail boats ashore and in the water. Nicola Walsh, Certified Marina Manager at Swanwick Marina, said: “Following the successful launch of the Motorboat and RIB Show at Gosport Marina last year, we’re looking forward to hosting it again, alongside a Pre-season Boat Show here at Swanwick. It will be a valuable show for those who are keen boating enthusiasts who want to know about the benefits of dry stack, and for serious buyers who want to view a variety of large and small boat brands. Boaters like to buy a boat earlier on in the year so they are back on the water in time for the long Easter weekend in April.” With free onsite car parking available, a marine focused tenant community and the Boat House Cafe serving breakfast, lunch and evening suppers to visitors, Swanwick’s Boat Show will offer an insight into the most sought-after boats for 2017, in a relaxed and serene setting. Other upcoming Premier Marinas events include Southsea Marina Fishing Show (May 6th) and the British Motor Yacht Show (May 19-21).

The Emirates Spinnaker Tower Big Drop The Lord Mayor of Portsmouth will be Abseiling down the Spinnaker Tower on the 30th April at 11.30am with five other Mayors from across Hampshire. Cllr Faith Ponsonby from Havant, Cllr Des Scott from Eastleigh, Cllr Lynn Hook from Gosport, Cllr Cathie McEwing from Southampton and Cllr Jane Rutter from Winchester, who will also be fundraising for their own chosen charities.
The reason why myself and Lady Mayoress have chosen these three charities: The reason for choosing these three charities are firstly we are a military city and our service men and women and their families need are continuing support for many projects undertaken by this charity and we as a city need to remember what these service men and women have done and continue to do for the people of our country. The Oncology and Haematology department at Queen Alexandra Hospital in Cosham, have over 800,000 patients that go through their doors every year and we thought this machine that we would like to purchase would have the biggest impact on the city helping thousands of people. The reason for supporting Help 4 Special children is that so many families are unable to afford a family holiday when they have a disabled or sick child and there is always the other siblings to consider as they have to go without, because there brother or sister is so ill. There are financial implications and travel implications that stop families from being able to go on a normal family holiday when you have a sick and disabled child, but with the purchase of the Rest Bight Care Holiday home and with the help and support from, help 4 special children, families will be able to go on holiday. It is sometimes all about fun and memories and being together as a family and not all about treatment and constant hospital visits. We thought that each charity would touch the hearts of every family in Portsmouth in some way and benefit from us raising this money.
The three chosen Lord Mayor’s charities for this year This year the Lord Mayor of Portsmouth Cllr David Fuller and Lady Mayoress Leza Tremorin have chosen these three Local

Portsmouth charities to raise money for. The first being the Royal Navy and Marines charity: This charity will fund many projects ranging from supporting our injured service men and women to helping their families when support is needed. The second charity will be the Oncology and Haematology department at Queen Alexandra Hospital. At present this department alone looks after over 800,000 patients every year, medically treating every type of cancer and blood disorder and the patients have to wait up to five hours to receive their blood results. The results will indicate if they have an infection or not, which then determines what treatment they can have. The machine that we would like to purchase will give the patient a result within 10 minutes of having their blood taken and this will enable treatment to be administered as soon as possible. Help 4 Special Children want to send terminally ill and disabled children and their families on holiday for respite care. We would like to send the families to a holiday camp in Selsey were they can use all the facilities but be near to home if they need to return urgently. When you have a child with a disability or terminal illness this carries a financial implication and for some families all they have is memories and we would like to afford this Respite Care Holiday Home to give those families’ good memories of fun times. It shouldn’t be all about hospital visits and endless treatments. We would also like to give are heartfelt thanks to Swinton Insurance for sponsoring this event and for all the support of the Emirates Spinnaker Tower and Gunwharf Quay’s for giving us excess and ongoing support.
How to donate to The Lord Mayor’s Appeal Big Drop/Abseil If you would like to donate please go onto our website at www.localgiving.org/appeal/spinnakermayors Or please send a cheque made payable to HIWCF Addressed to: Marcella Payne, Lord Mayor’s Charity Coordinator, Lord Mayors Office, 2nd Floor, Guildhall, Portsmouth, PO1 2AB.

Simple Minds Acoustic Tour 2017 Following the release of their 19th studio album ‘Simple Minds Acoustic’, Simple Minds will be doing a 14 date acoustic tour of the UK in 2017, coming to the Southampton Mayflower on Thursday 1st June. The band will be performing their career-spanning collection of songs re-imagined acoustically, and will be joined on the road by support act The Anchoress. Following their 2014 album ‘Big Music’, which received across the board praise, with Mojo magazine declaring it “Their best album in 30 years”, ‘Simple Minds Acoustic’ continues the bands artistic quest with a one-off album release of stripped down and reimagined songs, spanning their eclectic and illustrious career. On ‘Simple Minds Acoustic’ the band have found a way of doing the acoustic thing without losing their essence, and a dozen Simple Minds songs loved by millions now sound, more organic and even more likely to leave a lasting imprint. The synths are no more – but the Celtic soul remains. The fact that the album sessions entailed a sentimental return to their Glasgow roots for Jim and guitarist Charlie Burchill helped, with some songs recorded in Gorbals Studio, a former railway workers’ social club located a stone’s throw from the high-rise estates of the city’s South Side where the pair took their first musical steps. It was in this building that frontman Jim Kerr and guitarist Charlie Burchill played their first gig as teenagers in a school glam-rock band, and emotions were understandably high on their return. The band began 2016 by putting together an acoustic set for the Zermatt Unplugged Festival in the Swiss Alps. Having spent weeks working on meticulously layered acoustic arrangements of their best-loved songs for that 90-minute performance, they began hatching plans to record them. As a group who formed in the punk era and found their mojo through a shared love of Bowie, Kraftwerk and electronic dance, Simple Minds are not natural acoustic adventurers, but they have done a remarkable job here, adding fresh nuance to brilliant songs without trampling on sacred memories.

Average Geoff Hi guys. I’m Average Geoff and I run health and fitness pages on instagram, facebook, twitter and youtube for free as I’m passionate about my mission to help people get healthier and live better lives through food choices and exercise. I’m a guy with a full time job and a young family and I want to motivate and help others see that it’s still possible to be fit and healthy with a family and work by making small lifestyle changes. I so often speak to people wanting to make a lifestyle change but not knowing where to start, feeling intimidated or struggling with motivation. This HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) session is a great fat burner and despite being simple it’ll really leave you feeling like you’ve had a great workout. As an added bonus HIIT training will also have your body burning calories for hours after you work out so you’re getting more results for less time working out. This bad boy can be done in as little as 18 minutes so no excuses for not having time! If you have trouble performing a movement you can scale it to your specific needs until you’re ready to progress to the next level. See the version in the photo inserts. This workout is 30 seconds of each movement with 30 seconds rest. Do 3-5 rounds depending on your fitness level and available time.

Health & Fitness How to motivate yourself into regular exercise Frank Mangna; known as Mr FunkyFit is a motivator, personal trainer, fitness writer and the owner of Studio Red Fitness in Southampton.
How to motivate yourself into regular exercise! Exercise is not for everyone, but it’s surely needed by everyone. Life is definitely much better when you feel fit and healthy. You have more energy, you get less stressed, you cope better with anxiety and worries, you become more creative, your moods are constantly elevated, you get better sleep, you can combat depression, you feel motivated, you get good sleep, your confidence goes up and you have great self esteem. With all these benefits you still face the challenges of keeping yourself fit and staying motivated. So here’s a few ways to help you get started and hopefully keep you motivated to exercising regularly. Love yourself; Loving and respecting yourself will encourage you to stay focused and help you to stay away from putting junk food into your mouth. Loving yourself will constantly remind you of the negative effects of being overweight, feeling lethargic and generally inactive. Find an activity you love; finding an activity you love will keep you motivated. You can be competitive and constantly challenge yourself or others within that activity or sport. Join classes or clubs; Classes or fitness clubs are great for motivation because you’ll meet fun people with the same goal as you. There’s nothing like exercising with a group of fun, energetic, inspired people. Make friends with such people as they will help you to stay on track.
Knee raise shoulder press
Set a goal or find an event; Events like weddings, birthdays or even work parties can be your goal posts. You can make events your bench mark to losing weight or just generally improving you fitness. Take short steps; many people become overly ambitious when they start exercising. They over do it! You need to ease the muscles in order to avoid severe muscle pain discomfort and injuries. Extreme diets and weight loss fads should be avoided as they will only give you short term results. Don’t try to do too much too soon. Start small and ease your way up, work gradually and be consistent with it.
Squat knee raises
Celebrate; some achievements might seem small to others but great to you. You might have walked to work or lost a few pounds, learn to pat yourself on the back and feel good about those small accomplishments. So here we go! Now that you’ve got all these ideas, why not start a healthy active lifestyle and make this year your healthiest year ever. Good luck. New discovery in jellyfish provides shortcut in soft robotics A new discovery in the way in which jellyfish continue to survive in the ocean following the loss of limbs could prove helpful in the development of self-healing robotics.
re-arranging its remaining limbs until they were equally distributed around its body. In doing this; the animal had recovered its ability to survive.
According to a study published in ‘Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences’, moon jellyfish – instead of re-growing lost limbs like many sea creatures – re-arrange their remaining limbs, ensuring that they can continue to survive in the ocean.
The way in which a moon jellyfish’s tentacles are organised and spread around its body is critical to the creatures’ survival in the ocean. This shortcut to healing can be a real lifesaver for such a small, soft creature, with 33-47% of seafloor invertebrates like the moon jellyfish suffering injury at any given time.
The study, published in 2015, caught the attention of Marine Biologists worldwide, and more surprisingly robotics experts. Some believe that the moon jellyfish’s unique ability to self-repair could teach us how to build robots that can heal themselves. The discovery happened almost by coincidence when Michael Abrams, a PHD student at the California Institute of Technology (CALTECH), and his assistant were studying a chandelier-like jellyfish with the ability to transform back into a polyp at any stage of its life. However, this species of jellyfish proved difficult to obtain, so Abrams and his assistant began conducting ‘old-school’ experiments on the moon jellyfish. The pair amputated two of the jellyfish’s eight symmetrical arms, fully expecting the limbs to re-grow, which is the case with many marine invertebrates. But the young jellyfish, instead of re-growing the lost limbs, spent the following 18 hours 28 | The LOOP
contactus@loopmagazine.net
This process of spreading its remaining tentacles equally around its body is called ‘symmetrization’. This process neither creates new cells nor destroys old cells, but instead relies on the sheer power of muscle contractions of the remaining tentacles to spread them out. This new discovery puts to bed long unanswered theories about jellyfish with fewer than eight limbs. Previously, these unexplained anomalies were thought to be caused by anything from an accident or collision to a mutation of some kind. The study of symmetrization could help investigators prevent accidents happening to artificial bodies in ‘soft’ robotics; a relatively new field of engineering in robots that is inspired by soft animals such as worms and octopuses. The main obstacle in soft robotics is that in being soft, these robots are especially vulnerable to punctures and cuts from sharp objects. Until now, researchers have attempted to overcome this problem by creating a new way for soft robots to re-grow lost tissue. However, with the discovery of symmetrization, scientists believe that they have encountered a shortcut. John Dabiri, a biophysicist at Stanford University, said: “Jellyfish have shown us what is perhaps a simpler and more elegant solution: re-distributing tissue to maintain function in a different body than you started off with. Put simply: not re-generating what was lost, but restoring function with what you have”. The study of the symmetrization method of the moon jellyfish could also provide new insights for scientists studying regenerative medicine. In essence; this was a very lucky discovery that could lead to breakthroughs in more than one area, and could see self-healing/repairing robots entering the world.
AI Technology: progression or dangerous territory? The main obstacles giants like Google and Microsoft encounter when it comes to innovation in AI technology, is the competition from other companies concerning how much of your life it wants to manage. In short; how much information are we willing to give? Although AI technology is seen as progression and looked upon as a positive, several scientists have warned that putting too much faith and giving too much information – or intelligence – to AI Technology could lead to a huge backlash; and even the end of the world. Professor Stephen Hawking has himself warned that creating robots that think for themselves could pose a threat to our existence. Hawking admitted that primitive forms of Artificial Intelligence have so far proved very useful and have personally assisted him in communicating with other people, but fears that there could be dangerous consequences of creating something that could match or surpass humans. Others are less pessimistic about the continual development of AI Tech, but the uncertainty surrounding the subject has been widely discussed. We cannot know what would happen if a machine were to exceed human intelligence, and so we cannot know if it would help us, or render us obsolete and either ignore or destroy us. 2017 is thought by many to be the most important year for technology to date, following the new discoveries and boundaries broken in 2016 – especially when it comes to Artificial Intelligence (AI). Artificial Intelligence, at its base definition, is the theory and development of computer systems that are able to perform tasks that would traditionally require human intelligence. This can include: visual perception, speech recognition, making decisions, and translating between languages. So according to this definition, artificial intelligence is already rampant throughout our world, as it includes everything from Google Translate on your computer, to Siri in your IPhone.
Artificial Intelligence has also recently stepped into some classrooms in the UK through an education company called Third Space Learning. This year, Third Space Learning will become one of the first examples of AI software being used to monitor, and hopefully improve teaching. The platform is aimed towards pupils struggling with maths, in particular children from disadvantaged backgrounds. The company has analysed over 100,000 hours of audio and written data from its tutorials, with the aim of identifying what makes a good teacher and a successful lesson. Initially the company’s tutors will receive automated interventions from the teaching software during lessons when it detects that a lesson may be veering off course.
Soft Robotics: the future is here Robots up to this point have always been fairly clunky and complicated; lightyears away for those we have come to expect from films and television. But advancements in soft robotics could herald a new era in technology, and could see futuristic robots become a reality. For example, towards the back end of 2016, researchers at Cornell University in the US published a paper detailing progress made in a mechanical hand that is closer than ever to mimicking human being’s sense of touch. The mechanical hand, dubbed the ‘Gentle Bot’ is even capable of identifying and selecting the ripest of three tomatoes simply by touching and prodding the fruit. The Gentle Bot uses a hand-shaped balloon with waveguides (stretchy, optical LED sensors) built in to feel and identify objects. In the short term soft robotics has already begun to be utilised in packaging fragile food, and this kind of technology will continue to be applied to manufacturing and other similar industries where soft robotics can be of help.
The Future, however, is where it will really begin to get interesting and exciting. Scientists and roboteers hope to one day create prosthetic limbs that are wired to the brain which will work, in theory, like a normal human hand. Although this may still be some years away, it is now conceivable through the new discoveries and research in soft robotics. contactus@loopmagazine.net

Chicken and Chorizo Broth A fantastic quick and simple meal that you can knock up in less than 10 minutes. The key is its strong flavours from the rosemary, thyme and a little bit of sage, which really bulk up the flavour of the beans. Serves 6–8 4 tablespoons olive oil 1 onion, finely chopped 125g chorizo picante, finely chopped 6 boneless skinless chicken thighs, roughly chopped 1⁄2 teaspoon smoked hot paprika 5 garlic cloves, finely chopped 2 sprigs of rosemary, leaves picked and finely chopped 2 x 400g tins flageolet beans, drained and rinsed 800ml chicken stock 150ml double cream 50g unsalted butter 1 small bunch of flat-leaf parsley, roughly chopped sea salt and freshly ground black pepper 500g sliced wheat and rye bread Heat a large sauté pan until hot, then add half the olive oil, the onion and chorizo, and cook for 2 minutes. Add the chicken and fry for a couple of minutes, then add the smoked paprika, garlic and rosemary, and stir in the beans. Add the stock, cream and butter, and bring to the boil, then simmer for 5 minutes until the chicken is cooked through. Add the parsley and season to taste with salt and peppper. Heat a griddle pan until hot, then drizzle the bread with the last of the olive oil and griddle on each side until charred. Serve the bread with the soup. 32 | The LOOP

Double Baked Chocolate Meringue Brownie This is an incredible recipe! The texture of the two contrasting layers, one gooey and rich and the other crunchy with a marshmallow centre, makes this recipe really special. Serves 8 Preparation time: 25 minutes Cooking time: 1 hour 10 minutes For the brownie 250g (8oz) unsalted butter, plus extra for greasing 350g (11½oz) dark chocolate, roughly chopped 300g (10oz) light muscovado sugar 5 large eggs, separated
Meanwhile, make the meringue. In a large, clean, dry bowl, whisk the egg whites to stiff peaks, adding the sugar a little at a time, then add the vanilla extract. Sift the cornflour and cocoa powder together, then fold into the meringue until the mixture is even and glossy. Remove the chocolate brownie from the oven and cover the top with the meringue. Return to the oven for a further 25 minutes, or until the meringue puffs up and a crust forms on the top but the centre is still soft. Leave to cool in the tin. The centre will collapse slightly. Serve warm with crème fraîche or vanilla ice cream.
For the chocolate meringue 4 egg whites 225g (7½oz) golden caster sugar 2 tsp vanilla extract 1 tsp cornflour 50g (2oz) pure cocoa powder Preheat the oven to 180°C (fan 160°C)/350°F/ gas mark 4. Grease a 22cm (8½in) diameter springform cake tin and line with baking paper, making sure it is at least 5cm (2in) above the rim of the tin. To make the brownie, melt the butter and chocolate together in a heatproof bowl set over a saucepan of barely simmering water, making sure the surface of the water does not touch the bowl. Add the sugar, stirring until it has completely dissolved. Remove from the heat and add the egg yolks. In a clean, dry bowl, whisk the egg whites to soft peaks. Fold a couple of tablespoons of the egg whites into the chocolate mixture, then fold in the remaining whites using a rubber spatula. Spoon the mixture into the prepared tin and bake in the oven for 40 minutes.

DIVORCE..£500 + VAT * Of all the ups and downs life has to throw at us the breakdown of a relationship is one of the hardest to deal with. Whilst struggling to deal with the emotional fall out the harsh reality of considering the financial consequences is a huge burden but essential to resolve early on. When a marriage or relationship breaks down the parties have to divide between them the assets (or debts) they have accumulated. But what if they cannot agree - how can they avoid the trauma and expense of arguing the matter before a Court? First, nothing can be finalised without both parties making complete disclosure of their assets. Some people might not like this but there is no realistic alternative. Therefore, be prepared to produce copies of pay slips, bank statements, shares and building society accounts and anything else showing what money you have and where it is. It must be up to date. Secondly, remember that the children come first. They almost certainly did when you were together and that will not change just because you are now divorcing. The children will need somewhere to live. The parent they live with will need an income to provide for the children. Thirdly, get good legal advice early on from some one who is a specialist. In today’s world changes come about quickly and you need up to the minute expert advice. Perhaps you do not feel ready to take any action but need advice to understand exactly where you stand. We are good listeners and will give you balanced, considered advice to help you to have the confidence to make the decision which is right for you. Driver Belcher has a dedicated family law team with extensive experience of helping people to resolve the difficulties arising from the ending of a relationship. We are accredited specialist members of Resolution, which promotes a non-confrontational approach to resolving legal matters in a practical way. We will however ensure a firm and robust representation to fully protect your position should negotiations fail. For further advice please contact Victoria Baker at Driver Belcher Solicitors on 01489 785737 or email vbaker@driverbelcher.co.uk.

The Wickham Festival attracts an audience from across Britain and Europe with people also travelling from North America and even Australia to attend. It’s estimated to be worth over £1 million to the local economy with shops, pubs, restaurants, hotels, taxi firms, petrol stations and infrastructure suppliers all benefitting. Festival organiser Peter Chegwyn says he hopes to make the 10th Festival to be staged in Wickham the best yet. “Our reputation for being a very safe, relaxed and family-friendly Festival means our audience is increasing every year. Musicians love performing here because the crowds are so enthusiastic while the local community seem to have embraced the Festival and enjoy the life and business it brings to the area.” ‘Earlybird’ weekend season tickets are now onsale. Anyone buying before the end of December can save £40 on every adult ticket, £20 on under-16 tickets, with under-10s gaining free entry. Full details of next year’s event and how to buy tickets online or in person can be found on the Festival website.

The Gregg School
Education
What do an Oncologist, an Opera Singer, an Engineer, an Olympic Medallist, a TV Producer and a Nuclear Physicist all have in common? The answer is they all studied at The Gregg School in Southampton. For a school that does not select its students on the basis of academic ability, The Gregg has an enviable reputation for adding value to children’s educational outcomes. The independent school, which has 300 girls and boys on roll aged 11 to 16, prides itself on its holistic approach to education, placing equal emphasis on academic success and the development of character education - communication, self-esteem, resilience, confidence-building, decision-making and leadership qualities - that enhances students’ ability to work both independently and interdependently at college, university and beyond. Small classes – the average is 15 – provide an environment which enables students to receive bespoke teaching and learning, ensuring each and every child achieves their very best. Year 6 children who sit the School’s Entrance Assessment on Saturday 4 February will automatically be considered for Academic Scholarships which offer fee discounts of up to 33%. In addition, there are a limited number of Scholarships available in Art, Music and Sport.
Hampshire primary school theatre production a success Pupils from Hook-with-Warsash C of E Academy filled theatre seats at Ferneham Hall for three consecutive nights as they performed their sensational school production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.
Over 300 pupils from the school were involved in the school production with Year 6 pupils taking the lead roles performing on stage. Year 6 were supported by the choir consisting of children from years 3, 4 and 5. Pupils from years one and two were also invited on stage to join in with singing and to perform some special Egyptian style moves during the Pharoah’s song. The children were accompanied by the school band which consisted of: year 3 teacher Judy Meads on piano; Martin Macbeath on bass guitar; Simon Lowes, a governor of the school, on drums; Sarah Thorne, Reception teacher, on violin; Ethan Childs on trumpet and Alex Kimish playing the saxophone and clarinet. Both Ethan and Alex are ex-pupils of the school and were invited back to help with the school’s all singing and dancing production. The stage was awash with colour as all pupils dressed up for this special show in a range of Egyptian outfits and sang their hearts out throughout the whole performance. Joseph was played by year 6 pupil Daniel Mills who learnt all of the songs off by heart and was absolutely word perfect all three nights. Headteacher Sara Willoughby said, “The school’s performance of Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat was truly remarkable. I am normally racing about backstage putting on microphones but I was able to watch at the front this time and the overall effect of the show was breath-taking. The children sang their hearts out and their energy was inspiring. The show really is a true example of team work as members of staff and children throughout the school work together to make it such a success. I would like to thank everyone: parents, children and staff for their support; not many children get the opportunity to perform on a real stage like this and it is the hard work and dedication of all the staff and children that makes such a wonderful opportunity happen.” contactus@loopmagazine.net

Education St Anne’s – An Outstanding School St Anne’s is an outstanding school with a strong moral purpose: to work together to strive to ‘be the best that we can be’. The Catholic ethos, girls’ school status at Key Stages 3 and 4 and mixed Sixth Form College make St Anne’s hard to beat as the best place to educate the region’s girls from 11 to 18 and boys 16 to 18. St Anne’s was judged to be outstanding in all areas at the recent Ofsted inspection in March 2016. Inspectors described St Anne’s as a ‘warm and caring community where pupils flourish’ and found that ‘Pupils are happy at St Anne’s’. Headmistress, Lyn Bourne said ‘We are delighted with the outcome of our inspection.’ ‘In their summary of key findings for parents and pupils, they said “Pupils’ behaviour is exemplary; outcomes are outstanding; governance is first-rate and leaders and teachers have imparted the pupils with a very strong work ethic, a love of learning and a desire to excel”.’ ‘I couldn’t be more proud of my team of staff and students. In the words of the Ofsted report, I have a “dedicated and professional team who are all highly committed to achieving the best for every pupil.” We have worked hard to ensure the development of teaching and learning is at the heart of everything we do so it is particularly pleasing to have the ‘Quality of Teaching, Learning and Assessment’ judged to be ‘Outstanding’ across the school and in the sixth form.’
In addition to the ‘Outstanding judgement in March, it was confirmed that the school remains in the top 13% of schools nationally for progress and in the top 9% for attainment, with the release of the Government’s analysis of the 2016 results. This means that students at St Anne’s continue to achieve the highest standards and make the best progress in the country. Feedback from a recent formal external evaluation was also extremely positive with two main findings highlighted: This school is extremely well led. As a consequence it is a happy and exciting place to learn. Staff morale is very high. Pupils are very well cared for here and they make exceptionally good progress.’ It is easy to see why a recent visitor to the school described St Anne’s as not just ‘Outstanding’ but ‘In the stratosphere’! If you would like to find out more about St Anne’s please visit the website or contact the school to arrange a visit in person you will be most welcome. Limited places are available in some year groups. Applications to the Sixth Form for September 2017 are welcome. Tel: 023 8032 8200 Website: www.st-annes.uk.com email: info@st-annes.uk.com

Computer Know How! The panic and rush of Christmas and New Year has finally subsided, 2017 has settled and it’s back to business as usual. In this edition of Computer Know we are taking a look at something that effects everyone, Passwords! So perhaps it’s time for some Password management? How many companies have you had to set up an account for? And how many times have you used the same password? Or been told that your password isn’t secure enough, or doesn’t contain the specified number of particular characters… Well fear not! We have found an ideal solution for managing all of those super long, and super complicated passwords!
Password Managers Keep your login details secure with multi-factor authentication and generate uncrackable passwords. What is multi-factor authentication??
The built-in password generator will create long, randomised passwords that protect you from being hacked. What’s even better is that LastPass can AutoFill login details on supported sites. You can sign into LastPass on multiple devices, so all of your details can be accessed wherever you log in. LastPass even syncs automatically, meaning it is always up to date. You can also add notes for memberships, prescriptions, Wi-Fi passwords, and anything else you may want to keep safe! Don’t forget that you can always contact us for free impartial advice. Just give us a call at Hypersonic for hardware and software support, tuition, web design, data retrieval, commercial and home networking, all with an efficient and friendly service. As you may have noticed, some accounts, like Google have started asking for what is known as multi-factor authentication. This is where you have to provide not only a password to login, but also a security code that may be emailed, or texted to your mobile phone, adding another layer of protection. Passwords are a necessary evil. It is easy to mock the people using ‘password’ for everything, but creating and then remembering strong passwords that are unique to each site can be a real pain. Thankfully, these password managers not only do the remembering part for you, but in many cases, they will even type them in! Here at Hypersonic, we recommend the app called Last Pass. It offers a great, free option for unlimited Password Storage.
LastPass securely remembers your passwords, so you don’t have to, just remember your master password, and let LastPass take care of the rest. Simply install the extension for LastPass in your browser by visiting the LastPass site at www.lastpass.com. Create an account that you can sign in to on all of your devices, so that you can link them. Then create your Master Password.

Paralympic hero Mickey Yule visits Hampshire Highways Depot Paralympic weightlifter and Invictus Games Gold medal winner Micky Yule recently visited Hampshire Highways Bishops Waltham Depot to personally thank the Amey and Pavenet teams for their support of Help for Heroes. In 2010, whilst serving as Staff Sergeant with the Royal Engineers in Afghanistan, Mickey Yule unknowingly stepped on an IED (Improvised exploding device), losing his left leg and suffering significant injuries which eventually led to the amputation of his right leg. Mickey thanked the organisations for working together to supply a new driveway that allows easier access to his Hampshire home, and for their continual support to the Help for Heroes charity. Whilst at the site Mickey received a tour of the depot and spoke about his life experiences, answering questions posed by the depot workforce. Mickey said: “I am very grateful to the Amey and Pavenet teams for their hard work in enabling my home to become more accessible. It was a privilege to spend time with them and express my gratitude in person.”

Leading public service provider Amey, military charity Help for Heroes and civil engineering firm Pavenet decided to work together to support Micky, as the 38 year old from Edinburgh was experiencing great difficulty in getting up his gravel driveway. Yule’s family approached Help for Heroes to see if they could help, and a plan formed to make the driveway much more accessible, with the charity granting funds to pay for all materials and Amey and Pavenet kindly offering their expertise and time for free. Following over 100 hours of labour the gravel driveway was replaced with block paving, allowing much easier access for Micky.

Focus on Botley History of the Botley Mills A mill has existed in Botley since Saxon times. There has been some speculation about two mills. This may have been a reference to another mill further upstream from the known site at Mill Hill but records show that in 1536, a man named Thomas Everard rented the mill consisting of ‘two mills under one roof with stream for £15 a year’. This description probably meant two water wheels each driving one pair of mill stones and hence the site has always been referred to as ‘Botley Mills’. The known ownership of the mill commenced with a Saxon named Cheping. After the Norman occupation the Manor of Botley and its mill was owned by Ralph de Mortimer, a French nobleman who fought with William at the Battle of Hastings in 1066. The Manor remained in the Mortimer family until 1304, when possession was given to St. Elizabeth’s College, Winchester. When Henry VIII dissolved the Monasteries in 1536, the Manor was presented to Thomas Wriothesley, who became the 1st Earl of Southampton. It passed from father to son until it reached the fourth earl who, having no male heir, left the manor of Botley to his granddaughter Elizabeth Noel, wife of William Henry Bentinck the 1st Duke of Portland, in whose family it remained until 1775. The Manor was then sold to the Rev. Richard Eyre and in 1833 it was bought by James Warner. Warner and his descendants retained the manor into the 20th century, but they sold the mill in 1838 to William and James Clarke. Ownership of the mill passed to The Botley Flour Milling Company and then to the Appleby family. The Appleby’s had been involved in milling for about three hundred years, owning mills in the North of England before moving to the South to purchase the Botley Flour Milling Company in 1928. Ownership of the mill has remained with the Appleby family ever since. During the period of ownership by the Lords of the Manor, the mill was let out for rent and records exist of the tenants and the rentals paid from 1536 until 1838. One such tenant was Robert Stares who rented the mill from 1782 until his death in 1798 and became known as ‘King Stares’.
52 | The LOOP
contactus@loopmagazine.net
Stares lived in Sherecroft, the house to the east of the mill and the long wall running alongside the house is thought to have been built by him. It was during Stares’ tenancy that the mill was rebuilt and enlarged and the main central building was constructed in 1770. To the east and originally detached, is a four storey building of 1880, constructed as a store for wheat sacks. In 1921 it was converted into a roller flour mill. Between these buildings is a narrow five story grain silo built in the 1950s, which later became an animal feed (Provender) mill. To the north of the Mills, the river Hamble was embanked to form a mill head which provided the power to drive two backshot waterwheels each driving a pair of millstones. By the late eighteenth century steam power was introduced to supplement water power and in 1892 a roller mill was introduced and driven by a turbine. The waterwheels were removed in 1908. The roller mills were subsequently powered by a gas engine, later an oil engine and finally by mains electricity. Roller milling ended at Botley in 1990.The millstones providing stone ground wheat meal flour, continued to be driven by water power until 1993. Grain and coal was imported and flour transported by barges, which were poled on the tides of the Hamble to and from ships moored at Bursledon. With improved roads and access to the railway, river trade ceased in 1914 and the quay in front of the mill was covered over in 1960 to make the present car park. Two major floods in the eighteenth century caused extensive damage to the Mill, and in 1852 the road bridge was washed away and in 1886 following intensive rain on Boxing Day, the mill incurred considerable damage. It was later reported that the banks of the river above Durley Mill had burst and came with such tremendous force and met the high tide at Botley. Disaster again struck the mill when a devastating fire in 1980 destroyed the 19th century animal feed plant at the Mill and during the following few years, the processing of flour and animal feeds was transferred to the new site at Hedge End becoming Dukes & Botley Agriculture Ltd. The historic Botley site now incorporates a parade of small shops and it was hoped to turn the Mill into a working mill museum by the Appleby family; but financial support for the project has not been forthcoming and progress has stalled.

Getting started! If you’ve been inspired to start sailing this year here are five top tips to get you on the water 1. You don’t need to buy a boat Dispelling the myth that you don’t have to own your own boat, all good clubs and centres will have training boats that, for a small fee – often as little as £5 for two hours, you will be able to borrow. This will give you the chance to try different boats. 2. Sailing clubs are more inclusive than ever Never tried it? Your local club will probably run regular sessions where you get out on the water with an experienced sailor. If not contact them and ask. Training centres also run taster sessions with qualified instructors for a small fee. Don’t forget to look out for open days too, they are the perfect chance to look around your local, meet members, and generally get a good feel if it’s the club for you. 3. Get a good start Training is the best and quickest way to build skills and confidence. The RYA’s certificate schemes in sailing,

windsurfing and powerboating are internationally renowned and provide the perfect stepped approach to learning and progression. You’ll certainly find a course suitable for your needs. 4. If at first you don’t succeed…. Don’t get put off. No-one’s going to be perfect from the start. Look for a club or centre that gives you lots of opportunities and time to learn and practice as your progress through your formal training, with informal coaching and open sessions with safety boat cover. 5. Throw yourself in at the deep end Not literally! But one of the main reasons people stay in sailing is the social side. Clubs are generally very welcoming and friendly so get to know people, be inspired by their enthusiasm, and take advantage of their…most sailors are happy to share their knowledge and stories. Visit www.rya.org.uk/startboating to start your adventure.
Rural survey shows public wary of ‘damaging developments’ A survey conducted by the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE) shows what the public think are the biggest issues for the local countryside in Hampshire.
Talking to and influencing MPs about the dysfunctional planning system, and helping communities with Neighbourhood Plans, both also scored highly in the survey. CPRE Hampshire’s Director, Michael Rescorle, said: “The partnership with Hampshire Farmers’ Markets, which has been running for two years, has enabled us to engage with the public. More than 900 people have completed our surveys and the results influence our projects and campaigns. “I am grateful to Hampshire Farmers’ Markets for the opportunity to have a stall at their markets and for providing the hamper which, as last year, contained excellent examples of local food and produce.” Participants in the survey were entered into a free prize draw to win a hamper from Hampshire Farmers’ Markets producers.
2016 marked the Hampshire branch of CPRE’s 50th Anniversary, and to mark the event the charity asked people at Hampshire Farmers’ Markets across the county their thought son what their priorities should be over the coming year.
This year’s winner was David Aston of ‘Four Marks’, near Alton. David and his wife Cheryl, who are CPRE members, were presented with their hamper at Alton Farmers’ Market by Market Manager Tim Arnold and CPRE Hampshire Director Michael Rescorle.
A clear majority of the 364 people who completed the survey (78%) said responding to planning applications to prevent damaging developments should be the main focus for the charity in 2017. This was closely followed by 76% of participants who would prioritise campaigning for a Green Belt in South Hampshire.
In Hampshire CPRE has almost 2,000 members and a team of hard-working volunteers. To find out what they have been doing in your area to help protect the countryside visit www.cprehampshire.org.uk. To find your local Hampshire Farmers’ Market visit www.hampshirefarmersmarkets.co.uk.

The Stranglers tour comes to New Year - New Hair Timezone Southampton Based in Barnes Lane, Sarisbury Green, is a warm friendly Salon Following the sell-out success of their Black and White tour in March last year, The Stranglers will be back on the road in March 2017.
that Sandy has successfully owned for 16 years. She would like to introduce two new stylists to her team:
This time the band will showcase the Classic Collection, coinciding with the re-release of the entire Stranglers studio album catalogue from the period 1977-82. Having been together for some 40 years now, the band will draw from their expansive and impressive catalogue, treating audiences to an exciting mix of material, all bearing the distinctive style of one of Britain’s most enduring bands. Expect the signature driving rhythms and occasional dark humour, complimented by the trademark rumbling basslines and swirling keyboards. Originally named the Guilford Stranglers after forming in the town of Guilford, Surrey back in 1974, the group emerged out of the English punk rock scene of the 1970’s, shaping their own individual and unique sounds through hits such as ‘Peaches’, ‘No More Heroes’ and their huge 1982 hit ‘Golden Brown’. Currently riding high on a resurgent wave of popularity, they continue to live up to their title as one of the longest serving and continually successful bands to have originated from the UK punk scene. With record-breaking, sell-out shows and festival appearances throughout the UK and the rest of the world, public demand to hear and see the group has never been so high; true testament to their considerable musical talent and the quality of their songs. Joining them on tour will be the legendary reggae-influenced punk rock band of the same era, Ruts DC, who promise to deliver a memorable addition to the tour. The Stranglers will bring their live show to the O2 Guildhall Southampton on Monday 20th March 2017. ©Twitter @StranglersSite

Finding the perfect final resting place When someone you love passes away, there are so many things to be sorted out that, for some, making the final decision – what to do with a loved one’s ashes – can seem a decision too far. Every year hundreds of sets of ashes are left sitting with funeral directors while the families think about the options – some have cremated remains dating back over 50 years.
A place of peace and tranquillity
Mrs P of Gosport had been agonising over what to do with her parents’ ashes for a decade: “I’d popped them in the wardrobe but didn’t realise how much it was playing on my mind. Then I found Portchester Memorial Gardens. After selecting a plot there it was like a weight had been lifted and I enjoyed the best night’s sleep I’d had in years.”
Six acres of beautiful landscaped gardens offering a final resting place for the burial of your loved one’s cremated remains along with an individual memorial.
Mrs P loved the beautiful, well-maintained garden setting, selecting the plot herself and topping it with one of a choice of 50 personalised memorials and vases. With a range of lease prices starting from as little as £400 for ten years – less than a pound a week – there are options to suit all pockets. For advice on laying your loved one’s ashes to rest in an award-winning landscaped garden, contact the sympathetic team at Portchester Memorial Gardens on 01329 828250.

The hotel has only 6 rooms to give that celebrity style attention. Our deluxe rooms are en-suite, have a daily maid service and an evening steward. This ensures that our guests have all they need during the day and overnight. A daily massage, grooming session and personal trainer led activity are included in the daily timetable. Accommodation is divided into a private heated cabin for relaxing and an individual promenade area to stretch your legs, enjoy some birdwatching or sleep in the sunshine. Cabin facilities include a cosy relaxation pod, an open bed to doze and a massage centre, for a rub in those hard to reach places. All cabins have an aromatherapy diffuser designed for felines to help our guests relax and chill out while away from home. For a restful sleep we provide our guests with soft bedding and bespoke handmade quilts to snuggle into. All cabins have thermostatically controlled heating, to maintain a warm homely feel whatever the weather. Each promenade area is exclusive and not accessible by other guests. If you wish to relax in private the lower areas have solid divisions. To see what everyone else is doing and nosy at the other guests, the higher areas are slightly more public. For a good view of the hotel gardens and to enable birdwatching, each promenade area has its own lookout tower. This is also a great place for a spot of sunbathing,
We offer two all-inclusive packages incorporating our regular Captain’s Table Menu. For a touch of luxury why not enjoy the Five Star option which includes our Bedtime Butler Service. In addition, you can upgrade your package to include a Gourmet Dining Day or as a special treat, our feline Afternoon Tea is the ideal choice. Our aim is that each guest will have the perfect holiday, and return home relaxed and rejuvenated. We always provide each guest with a small gift to take home for their Mum and Dad. We always welcome clients who wish to view before they stay, so please give us a call and come and see us and meet the staff.

Strong Growth for the UK Space Industry The Agency’s latest survey of the UK space industry, carried out every two years, shows that the sector has continued to grow strongly.
Produced by London Economics, the ‘Size and Health of the UK Space Industry 2016’ represents the definitive latest source of information on the UK space sector. This year’s report shows that space continues to be a key infrastructure for the UK, supporting more than £250 billion of output across the economy with telecommunications, navigation, earth observation and meteorology services. The sector is now estimated to directly employ 38,500 people. With output per worker almost three times the UK average, the sector is highly productive and has a workforce that is among the most highly skilled in the economy, with three in four employees holding at least a primary degree. Firms are also positive in their expectations for the future. 7 in 10 responding businesses expect their income to grow over the next few years, and over half expect export sales to grow. Exports are an important source of income for the sector, accounting for over a third of revenues in 2014/15.

It is now worth £13.7 billion to the UK economy and confidence amongst businesses is high.
With a range of improvements to method and more than twice as many companies responding, this year’s report provides the most robust evidence yet on the main characteristics of the UK space industry and on perceived challenges and opportunities looking forward. Survey responses are supplemented with detailed secondary research and analysis to give the most accurate overview possible.
Lunar calander for 2017 Once a month the moon is full and where better to observe its orbit than Earth. The same side of the moon always faces Earth, giving rise to the ‘dark side of the moon’ intrigue. in reality, the “full moon” is never perfectly full, only when the moon, Earth and the sun are in perfect alignment is the moon, 100% full. This alignment produces a lunar eclipse and sometimes a full moon is full twice in a month or four times in a season, this is known as a blue moon.

Full moon names often correspond to seasonal markers, for example the Harvest Moon occurs at the end of the growing season in September. The Cold Moon occurs in ‘frosty’ December, primarily in the northern hemisphere. In the Southern Hemisphere, the seasons are switched and thus, the Harvest Moon occurs in March and the Cold Moon is in June. Common names for full moons south of the equator. Here’s how a full moon works:
Photograph by Blake Hopley KJ, BSc(Hons), MSc (Port)
Full moons in 2017 Many cultures throughout history and the planet have given distinct names to each recurring full moon. This is when full moons will occur in 2017:
The moon, a sphere that travels once around Earth every 27.3 days also takes about 27 days to rotate on its axis. Therefore, the moon always shows us the same face, there is no single “dark side” of the moon. As the moon revolves around Earth it is illuminated from different angles by our sun. On average, a moon rise occurs about 50 minutes later each day, this means sometimes it can rise during daylight and other times during nighttime hours. The moon phases work as follows: A new moon is when the moon is between Earth and the sun, so the side facing toward us receives no direct sunlight, and is lit only by dim sunlight reflected from Earth. A few days later, as the moon rotates around Earth, the visible side of the moon contactus@loopmagazine.net

gradually becomes more illuminated by direct sunlight giving rise to a thin sliver edge called the waxing crescent. One week after new moon, the moon is 90 degrees away from the sun in our skies and from our point of view, is half illuminated, known asl first quarter, because it is about a quarter of the way around Earth. A few days later, there is an increase in the area of illumination, when more than half of the moon’s face appears to be getting sunlight and this phase is called a waxing gibbous moon. When the moon has moved 180 degrees from its new moon position, the sun, Earth and the moon form a line. The moon’s disk is as close as it can be to being fully illuminated by the sun, so this is called full moon. Next, the moon moves until more than half of its face appears to be getting sunlight, but the amount is decreasing. This is the waning gibbous phase. Days later, the moon has moved another quarter of the way

contactus@loopmagazine.net
around Earth, to the third quarter position. The sun’s light is now shining on the other half of the visible face of the moon. Next, the moon moves into the waning crescent phase as less than half of its face appears to be getting sunlight, and the amount is decreasing. Finally, the moon moves back to its new moon starting position. Because the moon’s orbit is not exactly in the same plane as Earth’s orbit around the sun, they rarely are perfectly aligned. Usually the moon passes above or below the sun from our vantage point, but occasionally it passes right in front of the sun, and we get an eclipse of the sun. Each full moon is calculated to occur at an exact moment, which may or may not be near the time the moon rises where you are. So when a full moon rises, it’s typically doing so some hours before or after the actual time when it’s technically full, but a casual skywatcher won’t notice the difference. In fact, the moon will often look roughly the same on two consecutive nights surrounding the full moon.

Community News Celebrating Christmas at Locks Heath shopping village centre The voices sang and the bells rang for a day of fun and festivities on Saturday 17th December 2016. Locks Heath Rotary who have been supporting lots of local charities for many years now changed their usual collections campaign to a one day entertainment and fun day! In close cooperation with Steve Dacombe the Village Manager a programme was created to have live music and singing to help the jolly shoppers to enjoy their shopping experience.
Heartening was to get feedback from shoppers who reported that they like the ‘live’ music, some were heard signing away to ‘jingle bells’. The spokesperson went on to explain that
Locks Heath Rotary redistributes its charitable collections to other local charities (see list) and for many years has used the centre to promote itself to the wider public and raise the awareness of others less fortunate both locally and internationally.
The entertainment was provided by The Solent Singers, Maria Brigid Ryan, Ellie Rawlinson, aged 12 on her first ever public performance, Philippa Milburn and the Croftones Choir. Musical accompaniment throughout the day was provided by Rotarian Chris Milburn. The Rotary gang also provided, thanks to the generosity of local shopkeepers and Rotary Business Partners, ‘Mulled wine and mince pies’ supported by Alexander Hadleigh Wine Merchants, thanks Del. Another attraction was the ‘Bacon Rolls’ supported by Grover Butchers. Locks Heath Rotary members assisted by members of the Inner Wheel Club of Locks Heath armed with collecting tins placed themselves all around the walk ways hoping to tempt shoppers to place loose change, or notes if feeling merry after a couple of ‘mulled wines’ in their tins, the proceeds of which go to our general charity fund, much of which is used to help worthy causes in the ‘local’ community. Locks Heath Rotary spokesperson commented that it had been a spectacular day and whilst it had been in a new format the local community had supported us very well indeed. Our grateful thanks go to all the shoppers who helped us raise a little short of £900. Thank you and well done. contactus@loopmagazine.net

What’s On Strictly Come Dancing’s Pasha Kovalev announces new touring show for 2017
Pygmalion ‘The science of speech. That’s my profession. I can place any man within six miles. I can place him within two miles in London. Sometimes within two streets.’ How far do accents define us? Is status still dictated by our mother tongue? Sam Pritchard directs a radical new staging of Bernard Shaw’s acute comedy Pygmalion, a hilarious and poignant tale of two opposites, Henry Higgins and Eliza Doolittle, attempting to find a common language. This celebrated play was first staged over 100 years ago, and is still recognised as one of the most enduring and thoughtprovoking comedies in theatres today. In this new staging by Sam Pritchard, Associate Director at the Royal Court & 2012 winner of the JMK Award for Directors, a contemporary world is carved onstage using cutting edge sound and video technology which both examines class identity and questions how much our accents define us in modern day Britain. The cast includes: Alex Beckett, Ian Burfield, Gavi Singh Chera, Flaminia Cinque, Natalie Gavin, Racheal Ofori, Liza Sadovy and Raphael Sowole. The play, a co-production between Headlong, Nuffield Theatres Southampton and West Yorkshire Playhouse will be touring the country, arriving at Nuffield Southampton Theatres on 25th April and will run until the 13th May.
Strictly Come Dancing 2014 winner Pasha Kovalev will bring his new show ‘Let’s Dance the Night Away’ to the UK in March – May, coming to Fernham Hall on the 25th March 2017. Pasha arrived in the UK and onto our Television screens in 2011 when he and his dancing partner, British actress Chelsee Healey, finished as runners-up in BBC One’s Strictly Come Dancing competition. Kovalev again finished as runner-up in the competition in 2012, with his partner and Girls Aloud singer Kimberley Walsh. In 2013 he danced with Countdown presenter Rachel Riley before finally winning the coveted trophy in 2014 with his dancing partner and television presenter Caroline Flack. In the years following his strictly success, Kovalev took his ‘Life through Dance’ and ‘It’s All About You’ tours around the UK. He will be joined again by his spectacular dancers including special guest Anja Garnis, as well as local dance communities and live singing. This promises to be a hugely interactive show and reaches out to local dance communities as well as entertaining fans of Pasha, and fans of dancing. 80 | The LOOP
