Springtime Blues Although you can plant most shrubs either in the spring or autumn, there are one or two exceptions to this rule, which includes Ceanothus. More commonly known as California Lilac or Blue Blossom, with its dense clusters of blue flowers it is one of the very few blue flowering spring shrubs. While there are also summer flowering deciduous varieties, it is the evergreen spring flowering types that make such a wonderful spectacle early in our growing year. Whilst it is considered hardy, the Ceanothus requires the right conditions to settle in and survive and this includes planting it when the weather begins to turn milder.

of

Est. 45 years

Titchfield

In its native land of California there are over 60 available species ranging from ground hugging varieties to ones that will grow into small trees in all shades of blue from the palest hue to a almost deep violet. Choose your variety carefully and bear in mind the size of your garden as once happily established they will grow rather rapidly. This is particularly important as Ceanothus do not care to be pruned back hard and will only tolerate a light snipping here and there. For ground cover select Ceanothus thyrsiflorus repens and for a medium shrub ‘Concha’ or ‘Puget Blue’, while Ceanothus ‘Cascade’ will grow into a small tree after about 10 years. Also, be mindful of where you plant Ceanothus as they will not survive in an exposed site and really need a southerly aspect. If you can plant against a sunny wall they will thrive very happily in rather dry arid conditions. In the first year of planting you will need to ensure the roots do not dry out too much and afterwards you are advised to leave your Ceanothus well alone. In fact once established they seem to thrive better if you seriously neglect them!

Marine Matters At LOOP Magazine we like to encourage local people to share their story’s with us so what better way to do this than to ask the local BRIG RIB dealers and Suzuki Authorised dealer for the River Hamble if we could interview one of their clients and find out why they decided to go afloat for their recreational time. We talked to Tony Brooks, who recently purchased a new boat with his partner Teena Daniels, and asked what they loved about boating and how they got started. LOOP: What made you decide to explore boating as a leisure time activity? Tony: My partner Teena and I wanted a hobby that we could do together and be of equal ability. Neither of us had experienced powerboating before. The initial idea came from a conversation I was having with my daughter Tahla, who said how much fun she had canoeing on the River Hamble with her friends at the start of last summer. That got me thinking about buying a couple of canoe’s as a bit of fun to use in the summer, but this quickly developed into, what about purchasing a powerboat! Before we knew it, we had completed our RYA Level 2 Powerboat Course and we started researching powerboats and RIBs (Rigid Inflatable Boats). LOOP: How did you decide what type of boat to buy? Tony: Soon after we had made the decision that a powerboat was going to be our desired mode of transport on the water, we started our research. Only living a mile or so from Warsash, it seemed an obvious place to start looking in earnest, as Hamble is widely considered to be the epicentre of the boating world along the South Coast. I first met Lisa Walker and Henry Hillier of Marine Matters, based at Stone Pier, Warsash in August 2016. Knowing very little about boats, they were both very constructive with their advice on what type of boat to buy. Henry wasn’t at all pushy with his sales approach, In fact, completely the opposite. He encouraged me to think about the type of boating we wanted to do and to look at as many boats as possible, incorporating sea trials to understand the pros and cons of each type of craft. We knew a little about RIBs having driven two different types and sizes from our level 2 power boating course. I knew this type of boat with a deep V hull was capable of coping with the varied conditions of the Solent, able to carry multiple passengers safely but also a type of boat you can have fun in. Marine Matters held a sea trial day for different craft they had displayed at the Southampton Boat Show in September 2016. Henry had made available a BRIG Navigator 610, a BRIG Eagle 650 and their flagship rib a BRIG Eagle 780, the largest boat in the Brig line up to date. After trialling several other types of RIBs and different hard-hulled boats over the next few weeks, we decided the Brig Eagle 780 was the boat for us and we purchased “Tripple T” from Marine Matters. LOOP: Where do you keep your boat and why did you choose that location over others? Tony: We keep our boat at Universal Marina in Sarisbury Green, which is literally five minutes’ drive from where we live, meaning it is very convenient. Like most marina’s, Universal provide a dry stacking facility and a great service, which means we don’t have to worry about launching and retrieving our boat as they do it for us with an hours’ notice. They also have Bistro 8 bar and restaurant there which is fantastic for a nice lunch after a few hours on the water. Ultimately, it suits us being conveniently located and everyone at Universal Marina is very friendly and helpful. They don’t pass judgement because we are new to boating, which means we enjoy the experience all the more. LOOP: Have you done any boat training courses and if yes how has that helped your boating experience? Tony: We were both shocked to discover you don’t actually need a licence to buy a boat. It’s not like driving a car, you can effectively buy the biggest boat you can afford and get on the water. This means you are potentially in charge of an extremely lethal method 6 | The LOOP

contactus@loopmagazine.net

of transport. We decided, that if we were going to do this for enjoyment together and take out passengers, we needed to be as competent and safe as possible. Successfully completing our RYA Level 2 Powerboat Course with Marine Matters helped us to achieve this. The trainers are fabulous and we would recommend training with them. Training courses give you the confidence you need to be able to carry out boating enjoyably and safely. Putting into practice what you have learnt gives you the confidence to explore further and go out as often as you can. LOOP: Where do you like to go with your boat? Tony: Our boating is currently done on the Solent or Southampton water. The Solent offers various sea states and gives us the opportunity to test the capabilities of the boat and our understanding of the conditions. The Solent can be absolutely calm one day and really lumpy the next, so it can be challenging. LOOP: What is the best thing about having your own RIB? Tony: Undoubtedly the freedom to go where you want, when you want, subject to weather conditions and exploring different locations by sea or travelling up different rivers. LOOP: What are your aspirations for the future use of your RIB? Tony: As we get more competent, our trips will get more extensive which will be a real sense of achievement. In May of this year, we are carrying out a longer journey which will incorporate driving around the South East coast to Margate and then up the River Thames to St Katherines’ Dock. This trip is being organised by Marine Matters and there will be a number of boats on the trip, so it should be great fun. LOOP: What does life on the water give you that you don’t get from other activities? Tony: I have always played sports, such as golf or clay shooting for example. These sports when played at a competitive level require lots of concentration. A lapse in concentration means you have a bad hole or a missed shot. As a family we have to concentrate when driving our powerboat for obvious reasons, but for some reason I don’t think about the stresses of work and life when I’m on the water. Boating on the sea is a magical place to be when you treat her with respect. LOOP: Why did you choose to buy a boat from Marine Matters? Tony: Knowing nothing about boats, Lisa and Henry were both brilliant and very patient from the outset. There was no hard sell in any way, only solid advice, with Henry offering trials of various different craft and explaining the benefits and pitfalls of different types of boats. Their customer service is exceptional if they can help in any way, they are more than happy to do so, nothing is too much trouble and this is important when you first start out in powerboating. If this interview has “floated your boat” visit www.marine-matters. co.uk or call them on 01489 579589 and discuss the possibility of spending your family time on the water this summer.

Warsash Wasps Sports & Football Club Celebrates 40th Anniversary Local football club, Warsash Wasps, is this year celebrating its 40th anniversary, and is holding a special reunion day on Saturday 20th May at its New Road, Warsash ground. Local dignitaries, key sports & leisure staff from Fareham Borough Council and the Hampshire Football Association will attend the official naming of a new purpose built coaching and changing room building, named after the late Kirk Long who was a key figure in the development of the club in recent years. The club is hoping that as many ex players, coaches and parents from the club’s 40 year history will return to help celebrate the achievements made in the last 40 years and to see a display of photographs and other memorabilia. To help build up a complete history, the club is also asking if anyone has any photos of Warsash Wasps grounds, staff, players or matches, if they would kindly use the link below to send them to the club where they will be built into a planned club history record, laid down for future generations: www.warsashwasps.co.uk/2017/01/24/40th-anniversary-celebration If you would like to come down to the club’s ground, meet old friends and share memories from the club’s past, current players and club officials would love to welcome you and show you the club’s current facilities. George Dufty - British Pro Champion Kitesurfer So, a general question to all our readers…. What has the LOOP Magazine got in common with the extreme sport of kitesurfing and Hedge End? The answer, George Dufty and a manoeuvre called a KiteLoop.

up he puts a on board which is very similar to a wake board as you would see being towed behind a speedboat and he is away. His home spot is at Hill Head, Stubbington where he first learned to Kitesurf and is the current (two times) British Pro Freestyle Kitesurfing champion having won the title for the second time in 2016 after being undefeated in all three championship rounds through the summer of 2016 culminating at the final round in Hunstanton.

George is 20 years old and lives right on our doorstep in Hedge End. First though let me tell you what kitesurfing is if you don’t know already, Kitesurfing is the combination of many extreme sports but to name a few there is; paragliding, surfing, wake boarding, snowboarding, skateboarding, traction kiting and many others. It works by using a large kite effectively like a sail connected to George by 25m lines a control system and then a harness. Next

George first won the British title in 2013 becoming the youngest pro rider to do so at the age of 17 and is now one of only three riders to have won the title twice and has been training very hard this winter abroad to retain his title in 2017. In April 2016 he finished 5th in the World Junior Championships in St Pierre La Mer in the south of France. The category of “junior” was under 20. On the full World Pro Tour he finished with a world ranking of 36 due mainly to not being able to attend more of the tour stops. This is something that he hopes to address in 2017 with the world tour kicking off in Leucate in the south of France on the 10th of April. George is a global team rider for Liquid Force Kites, an American brand based in Oregon and is also sponsored by Tiki wetsuits from Braunton, Devon and Hampshire Kitesurfing Centre, a local business in Hill Head where George is one of the more sought after instructors and where he also runs coaching sessions when he is in the UK. So, the answer to the second part of the question was mention of the kiteloop. This is a manoeuvre where the rider, when maybe already 10-15 metres above the water, directs the kite in a complete circle (the loop) causing further lift and altitude. A move only safe for advanced riders, because to get this wrong means losing lift altogether dropping the rider back into the water like a stone. The pictures with this article show George drying out his kites before heading off to Brazil, grabbing his board in a training session in Australia and of course, George part way through performing a kiteloop. We will follow George during the summer and provide an update on how he gets on in both the UK Pro Championships and the Pro World Tour…

DIVORCE..£500 + VAT * Of all the ups and downs life has to throw at us the breakdown of a relationship is one of the hardest to deal with. Whilst struggling to deal with the emotional fall out the harsh reality of considering the financial consequences is a huge burden but essential to resolve early on. When a marriage or relationship breaks down the parties have to divide between them the assets (or debts) they have accumulated. But what if they cannot agree - how can they avoid the trauma and expense of arguing the matter before a Court? First, nothing can be finalised without both parties making complete disclosure of their assets. Some people might not like this but there is no realistic alternative. Therefore, be prepared to produce copies of pay slips, bank statements, shares and building society accounts and anything else showing what money you have and where it is. It must be up to date. Secondly, remember that the children come first. They almost certainly did when you were together and that will not change just because you are now divorcing. The children will need somewhere to live. The parent they live with will need an income to provide for the children. Thirdly, get good legal advice early on from some one who is a specialist. In today’s world changes come about quickly and you need up to the minute expert advice. Perhaps you do not feel ready to take any action but need advice to understand exactly where you stand. We are good listeners and will give you balanced, considered advice to help you to have the confidence to make the decision which is right for you. Driver Belcher has a dedicated family law team with extensive experience of helping people to resolve the difficulties arising from the ending of a relationship. We are accredited specialist members of Resolution, which promotes a non-confrontational approach to resolving legal matters in a practical way. Eric Robinson Solicitors Announces “Fixed Fees”

Finance & Legal Sevices

Hampshire law firm, Eric Robinson Solicitors, has caused a stir in the local business community with the introduction of fixed fees across all its departments, including commercial services. Whether starting, buying or selling a business, purchasing or negotiating a commercial lease, or dealing with internal matters from shareholder agreements to employment issues, Eric Robinson Solicitors now offers fixed fee services so businesses know how much they are investing in legal services right from the very start. ‘Our client feedback has always complimented us on our honest and transparent approach, so we wanted to take it to the next level,’ explains Catherine Maxfield, Managing Partner and Head of the Commercial Team at Eric Robinson Solicitors. ‘In our experience, clients are greatly reassured by knowing how much our involvement in a matter will cost them from the outset. It allows them to focus on the issues at hand instead of worrying what costs they are accumulating and will be charged in the future.’ ‘In uncertain and potentially challenging times, Start Up businesses and SMEs need to be given support and every opportunity to succeed. Very few businesses can afford to operate without knowing what financial commitments they are entering into and the legal profession needs to move in line with other business services by showing its affordability and value for money.’ ‘We may be the first law firm in the region to offer fixed fees across all our services, but we believe that this is the way forward.’ To find out more, call 023 8022 6891 or visit www.ericrobinson.co.uk

Woodlands Nursery Over 13 years ago, we had a dream to set up a family business in Childcare. We wanted our children to be cared for in a warm and homely environment that they would thrive in and attentive staff that would look after them as if they were their own. The transition from home to nursery should be a positive one for our children and for parents it is essential they know their children are happy, loved and flourishing. With all of this in mind Woodlands turned from a dream into a reality. Our driving force was to be more than a setting, to become an extended family. We took our time to find the right management team that would share our values and enthusiasm for leading the highest level of care; they have all been with us from the start of our journey and are still going strong. Our ethos has always remained the same, to place our children at the centre of everything we do and to continuously reflect on our practise to ensure we are providing the highest level of care. Since we have been open we have far exceeded what anyone thought possible having received an OUTSTANDING rating from OFSTED since 2008. We invest in our staff, employing only those who will inspire the children we care for and go above and beyond. We motivate our staff to achieve more in their careers, supporting them through receiving Foundation Degree’s, management qualifications and degrees. Our staff attend courses based on their interests, providing our children with different learning experiences, making every day different, fun and enjoyable. We have staff dedicated to ensuring the best parent experience of our setting, our Parent Liaison Coordinator meets and reassure all our new parents. We understand what a huge milestone it is for you as a family to leave your children with us and how important it is that you trust and enjoy the setting. As our staff have grown and

become parents themselves this philosophy has embedded itself to the greater extent. We understand that our role as practitioners is to not only help our children grow and learn now, while they are with us but to inspire them to become responsible young people. We do this by helping them learn about their community, their place in it and their responsibility to it. Our children do this by celebrating religious festivals, visiting those in our community and fundraising for local charities. It became apparent after establishing Woodlands, that not only did our staff share our vision and children enjoy it but our parents and families did too. We grew quickly and we knew it was important to ensure the same Woodlands magic, homely environment and family feel remained. We take time to ensure everyone is celebrated, valued and supported to reach their potential. We hope to exceed parent expectations and the experience of childcare for each and every one of our families that we care for. When we made the decision to open a second setting we knew it would be a long road to find the right environment that would fulfil our needs and match our philosophy. We were not willing to compromise on what we have taken a decade to achieve and putting our name to something, it had to be perfect. We purchased our new site “Woodlands Also” on Segensworth Road at the start of 2016 and spent just under a year transforming it to what you see today. It has been a labour of love. Our staff, children and parents have all been involved in making it a warm, homely environment that has our ethos embedded in to it, ready for the next generation of Woodlands children! We are honoured that our staff have delivered our dream come true and although we have gone above and beyond what we ever hoped to achieve they will still continue to raise expectations of childcare, inspire the next generation and care and celebrate every single child that embarks on their journey with Woodlands, as though they are our own.

Woodlands Also Pre-School now OPEN! Woodlands Early Learning have been consistently providing OUTSTANDING childcare since 2008, Woodlands Early Learning are proud to introduce their new Pre- School, Woodlands Also. We are currently taking registrations for children aged 2 years 6 months to school. An Extension of Woodlands Early Learning who has been awarded OUTSTANDING since 2008.

For more information please call us on 01489 605495 Or Check our website www.earlyroots.com

To achieve our goal of creating an exceptional nursery, it has been vital to invest in both suitable property and staff. It has been a labour of love renovating the building to create the space you see today, inside and out. No expense was spared in making it perfect for our children, providing a homely environment to help them learn and flourish. We are beyond proud of our new setting and can’t wait to show you around.

Finding the perfect final resting place When someone you love passes away, there are so many things to be sorted out that, for some, making the final decision – what to do with a loved one’s ashes – can seem a decision too far. Every year hundreds of sets of ashes are left sitting with funeral directors while the families think about the options – some have cremated remains dating back over 50 years.

A place of peace and tranquillity

Mrs P of Gosport had been agonising over what to do with her parents’ ashes for a decade: “I’d popped them in the wardrobe but didn’t realise how much it was playing on my mind. Then I found Portchester Memorial Gardens. After selecting a plot there it was like a weight had been lifted and I enjoyed the best night’s sleep I’d had in years.”

Six acres of beautiful landscaped gardens offering a final resting place for the burial of your loved one’s cremated remains along with an individual memorial.

Mrs P loved the beautiful, well-maintained garden setting, selecting the plot herself and topping it with one of a choice of 50 personalised memorials and vases. With a range of lease prices starting from as little as £400 for ten years – less than a pound a week – there are options to suit all pockets. For advice on laying your loved one’s ashes to rest in an award-winning landscaped garden, contact the sympathetic team at Portchester Memorial Gardens on 01329 828250.

Westquay Southampton’s premier retail destination has become even bigger and better since the opening of the new leisure-led scheme at Westquay, offering visitors not only retail but also a wide range of dining and leisure facilities to enjoy. Home to over 100 shops, including major department stores John Lewis and M&S as well as popular brands such as Victoria’s Secret and Apple, Westquay has all shopper needs covered, and with the completion of the new development the centre now has over 20 new fantastic dining outlets to suit all tastes including Red Dog Saloon, Franco Manca, Cau and The Diner, some of have made making their debut outside London. The new site has also created an entertainment hub for the city, offering visitors the latest in amusement from the state-of-theart 10 screen luxury cinema, showing all the latest blockbusters and also a 12-lane bowling alley, helping to cement the centre’s position as the leading retail and leisure destination on the South Coast.

In addition, Westquay recently hosted it’s own spectacular Festival of Light, part of a wider programme of events created for the city throughout the year in Westquay’s public Esplanade. Interactive art installations and digital light projections were commissioned for the occasion as well as digital mapping on the old historic walls surrounding the centre. The development’s completion marks a significant regeneration in Southampton, boosting leisure economy and local employment opportunities with over 1,000 jobs created – 640 in the scheme’s construction and 500 as a result of the now ongoing hospitality and catering opportunities. With a catchment of 1.3 million people Westquay will help to keep Southampton’s spending power in the city and will draw in new visitors from the surrounding areas.

Alongside this expansion Westquay has continued their efforts to take part in community-led projects that enrich the area and give back to its residents. The Walkway Art competition was part of this incentive and saw hundreds of submissions from local artists eager to have their work displayed on the walkway between Marks & Spencer and the new development. The submissions included high quality sculptures, photography, graphic design and oil paintings – all a testament to the creative talent in Southampton and the winning four pieces are currently on display. contactus@loopmagazine.net

Business Communications Phone calls across the Internet In this ever-increasing Internet dependent world, you may have heard a lot about Hosted Telephony options and how business can save a lot of money by utilising the Internet for your business calls. Whilst this is generally true, careful consideration needs to be taken as it’s not as simple as just opting for a hosted telephony service. Hosted Telephony tends to mean that someone else hosts a phone system and you pay a subscription to use an extension from this phone system. The system is a large enterprise system partitioned for each tenant or business account. All you require on your site is a handset and an Internet connection. In principle, this is a good idea, in reality though I’d like to ask you the question, do you rent or buy your home? Do you lease or do you purchase your car? Do you pay an ongoing cost for a service when you can buy the equipment outright?

that the hosted option continues to keep costing you well over £1,000 a year, for as long as you want the service. The system option can still connect to the Internet for its calls, but also can take standard lines giving you resiliency if the internet fails. You can have remote workers in branch locations across the Internet, you can have call recording, you can have voicemail delivery to e-mail and some additional features that hosted is unable to deliver. If the monthly charges are inviting, you can always look at leasing the cost of a system, with ownership at the end. One of the reasons hosted is being pushed so much is that it’s good for the telecoms companies as it’s a recurring revenue, but is it good for the customer? Of course, it’s not that simple. In some scenarios hosted is the best option for a customer but you should ask yourself, do you want to be renting your phone service, per user, per month for ever? For a comparison for your specific business talk to Working Technologies, no cost, not contract, no obligation, just good honest advice.

You are using a service and as such you pay a cost. A cost per user per month for as long as you require that service. A quick calculation will show you why this is sweeping through the industry. Working Technologies can supply a phone system using the internet for calls with 10 extensions costing less than £2,250 A single hosted user costs anything from £6.99 to £20+ depending on what package you require. Considerations such as do you want the phone included? Do you want some free calls, although nothing is for free?, Do you require anything outside the standard offering? Let’s take a middle ground on the monthly cost. 3 years charges for a mid-range solution for 10 users is over £4,000 compared to £2,250 for the system option. Not forgetting

Surprise party as local lady celebrates turning 90 years young! So when Joan Lingwood, the eldest of 10 children moved here 29 years ago from Pimlico London, I doubt she imagined partying with all these friends and family, celebrating her 90th birthday. Although Joan and Ken both originated from London, they had travelled plenty and even spent some time living in Australia before moving into the area. Joan holds an audience well with her stories of being evacuated, working in the NAAFI at 14 and the variety of other jobs she did. Although they never had children of their own, they have had many dogs which they have loved as if they were their children. Shortly before Ken passed away, 2 years ago, Joan became the owner of her latest dog, Wally, a Bichon Frise. Although only 4 years old Wally has to work hard to keep pace with young Joan. Joan is well known in the local area for her small frame, brisk walking pace and endless pocket filled with treats for all the dogs she meets on her twice daily walks. Joan attributes her health and agile walk to a diet of cream, dark chocolate, cheese and red wine – just the one glass a day though! Behind the armour of this petite, yet straight talking lady lies a woman with a golden heart. She is the neighbour that everyone needs. Not only does she take delivery of parcels, co-ordinate the window cleaner, babysit, dogsit and cat feed, she makes a good friend with a never ending coffee supply. Now I guess you can understand why nearly 40 friends and family wanted to arrange a surprise party to mark this special occasion. They plotted and planned behind her back; and tell me that’s pretty incredible considering “nothing” usually happens in the neighbourhood without Joan knowing! Present were Joan’s brother, sister, niece, nephew and cousin as well as her original, past and present neighbours as well as friends.

Waughmantennis - Gary Waughman Hi, I’m Gary Waughman, founder of Waughmantennis - I have been playing and coaching tennis for 25 years and in that time have worked with all levels of player ability, something I am passionate about. Currently I am running the tennis coaching programmes at two sites, Colden Common Tennis Club near Winchester and Abshot Country Club in Titchfield. As well as this I am developing tennis in schools and have seven primary schools where we implement our before and after school clubs. School tennis sessions are having a very positive effect on children and reports have stated that children who attend the morning sessions are more alert & ready for the day, compared to those that don’t. Getting children active and seeing their enthusiasm for tennis is so motivational and can only lead to a better future for them, both for their fitness & future direction. Tennis is unique sport which not only combines the individual element of decision making but also camaraderie in competition and training.

The kid’s tennis sessions are split into age groups; Red Ball Mini Tennis are for the 4-7 year olds, Orange Ball Tennis Sessions are for the 7-9 year olds, Green Ball Tennis Sessions are for 9-10 years old and our Yellow Ball Sessions are for 11 plus. Initially our coaching sessions are aimed at age groups but once a child has attended we then look at ability not age. We then manage children accordingly through the Program. Tennis doesn’t discriminate against age though and we have players ranging from 4 years to 70+ Not only are our players enjoying group and individual coaching sessions at our venues but also our Cardio Tennis Fitness Sessions are really taking off. Mixed adult groups (of all ages, no tennis skills required) are benefitting from the 60-minute workout classes which are held weekly on court. The workouts are done to music and feedback from our clients is that they are loving being outside, working hard and burning as many as a 1000 calories per session. Group and individual tennis coaching sessions are also available and are tailored to the individual, as of course, no two players are the same. I firmly believe that every player is unique, they learn differently, perform differently and as a coach I tailor my teaching methods accordingly. Tennis is all about having fun and as the Spring and Summer approaches its a great time to dust off your rackets and get on court. A few tips for those starting out or indeed picking up the game; • Early Preparation! Be ready for that ball - turn your hips and shoulders round before the oncoming ball bounces on your side • Get your racket back! Again, early preparation is key. • Exaggerate your follow-through stroke and catch the racket in your opposite hand. • Make sure you are having fun It’s never too late to enjoy tennis and our philosophy at Waughmantennis is that children and adults should have easy access to the game. They should be able to play at whatever level suits them best. In order to maintain this, our sessions are very much centred around games based coaching & having fun. We want people enjoying playing and not getting frustrated. Why don’t you come and have a go??

Fareham celebrates 10 years as a Fairtrade Borough Fareham recently celebrated ten years as a Fairtrade Borough with a successful new stall in Fareham Shopping Centre, marking the beginning of Fairtrade Fortnight.

The centrepiece of the stall was a tea set surrounded by delicious Fairtrade goodies, to illustrate the theme of this year’s Fortnight: ‘Put Fairtrade in your break’. Group members were on hand to give out Fairtrade bananas, chocolate and other treats (kindly donated by the Co-op), and to explain to shoppers how choosing Fairtrade products gives us a delicious break, while also breaking the cycle of poverty for rural communities in the developing world. Fareham’s Mayor Cllr Connie Hockley, with her consort Cllr Geoff Hockley, came along to show their support for Fairtrade, as did Executive Leader of Fareham Borough Council Seán Woodward, and Cllrs Pam Bryant and Louise Clubley. Chair of the Borough Fairtrade group, Rachel Hicks, said: “It’s been great to chat with people today, and send them away with a new understanding of the benefits of Fairtrade. Fairtrade is a really simple way to make a real difference to poor communities in the developing world. By choosing products that bear the Fairtrade mark, you can be sure that your purchase will give those who produced it a fair price and a better life.” Details of local events are available at: www.fftb.org.uk/hfn/page. php?id=diary

Get in the SWING at Felpham Model Railway Exhibition The very popular annual exhibition of a local area group of railway modellers will be a Mecca for adults and children who have any interest in this fascinating hobby. The show, which is the largest of its type in this area, is expected to attract visitors from all over the South to enjoy the many model railway layouts on display (fifteen are already booked to appear) and visit the stands of many suppliers of new and second hand model railway equipment, books and tools. As well as the ‘Ride on railway’* (weather permitting), there will also be the team of caterers ready to supply home prepared food and refreshments throughout the day.

The organizers are the South Downs Group of the 7mm Narrow Gauge Association who call the show, SWING 2017. S.W.I.N.G is an acronym for “Small and Wonderful Industrial and Narrow Gauge” although the group have interests in all aspects of industrial and narrow gauge, and modelling railways in general. We have a reputation for presenting an exhibition that showcases some of the best (generally small) layouts to be found on the circuit and to do this in a welcoming and friendly atmosphere. Come and join us - we can promise an interesting and worthwhile visit. This year, under 16 year olds will be permitted FREE ENTRY to the exhibition if they are accompanied by an adult. Several of the group members, most of which live in an area from Emsworth (Hants) to Worthing (West Sussex), have their own layouts, which they are pleased to discuss with visitors, giving help and advice on many aspects of building and operation. This year, visitors attending the exhibition may be invited to an informal open day later in the year at a local venue, to view some of these layouts and learn what the friendly group can offer to established modellers and those new to the hobby. The SWING Model Railway Exhibition will be at Felpham Community College, Felpham, Bognor Regis, PO22 7NU on Saturday 6th May 2017 from 10.00am till 4.30pm. For further details see our website www.swing.model-railway.org.uk *A fare is charged for this attraction.

Row on the beautiful Upper Hamble Try rowing on Saturday 29th April Hamble River Rowing is a friendly, recreational club based at the Jolly Sailor in Bursledon. We row very stable boats – ‘gigs’, normally with four rowers and a cox. In summer months, up to 50 people can row at our social rowing evenings on Tuesdays. Some Tuesday evenings become supper rows, for a curry in Botley or a steak in Hamble. Sunday morning rowing is popular right through the year with up to 4 boats rowing down to Hamble for coffee or up to the Horse and Jockey at Curbridge. The Upper Hamble is a beautiful stretch of water and trees, a hidden gem. Tucked in amongst the trees there are one or two ‘beaches’ where we can row for a picnic in the warmer months. The Hamble river is a wonderful place to see wading birds and wildfowl. At high tide, you may spot a kingfisher darting across the water. If you are very lucky you may even see a seal bobbing out of the water. Some members enjoy friendly competition and take part in the Hamble River Raid, Netley and Bursledon Regattas and the Thames Great River Race. This year 2 boats will go to the Ocean to City Race in Cork. Last year we had some exiting expeditions to Ashlett Creek, Chichester Harbour and a row up the Beaulieu River to the village. New expeditions are in planning, with Keyhaven, Langstone Harbour and Yarmouth tempting destinations. Another trip to Beaulieu is on the cards by popular request.

Rowing is social, good exercise, easy to learn and great fun. The Club welcomes new members; complete beginners are very welcome. When you come, you should be on the water rowing with experienced rowers within 10 minutes of arriving. Rowing can be addictive, once you try you will want to come back again. On Saturday 29th April, the Club is holding an Open Day at the Jolly Sailor, Land’s End Road, Bursledon. Come along and try a row in the company of experienced helpers, between 1200 and 1600. If you can’t come on the Saturday you will be welcomed after 1800 on Tuesday 2nd May, or any Tuesday evening when the tide is high enough for rowing. It is possible to park in the road near the pub or it may be easier to park at Bursledon station and follow the sign up the hill. Come and find us on the pontoon. You can check when we row by checking the Rowing Diary on www.hambleriverrowing.com

Birds of Hamble Common Hamble Common is 55 acres of coastal heath owned and managed by Eastleigh Borough Council and assigned Special Scientific Interest because of its wide range of habitats. It is the main focus for the Hamble Conservation Volunteers and for those who have not heard of the Common before, it is a downward pointing triangular shaped area bounded by Southampton Water and the River Hamble.

On the foreshore and creek, the ducks and waders start to thin out as the breeding birds move off to find nesting sites further north. The blacktailed godwits start to change to their breeding plumage to add a little colour just before they depart for Iceland or northern Europe. Late spring sees the arrival of our summer visitors, mainly a selection of warblers – cettis, reed, willow and chiffchaff. In recent years the Common has had a thriving population of breeding whitethroats. If you are lucky and observant you may see a passing dartford warbler; in the last few years these birds have been making use of the open Common when not in their breeding grounds in the New Forest. Stonechats also become more noticeable often giving dog walkers a telling off for coming too close to their territory. The warning call the male gives has been likened to the sound of clicking two pebbles together.

In the first of a series of articles we describe the resident and visiting birds that depend on the unusual habitat provided by the Common.

Birdlife in the Spring Spring on the Common provides visitors with the opportunity to spot some scarce and occasionally spectacular birdlife. Dunnocks, also commonly known as hedge sparrows, will be nesting and in full song. They are very active little birds and unusual in that they often don’t form pairs to breed but will instead form a loose trio of birds to raise a family.

For the very observant there can be sightings of nightjars feeding on the multitude of flying insects on warm evenings and roosting through the day on the wood stacks left by the Conservation Volunteers after a morning of removing scrub from the Common.

Hamble Conservation Volunteers We are the Hamble Conservation Volunteers, a group of local enthusiasts committed to preserving the habitat and amenity of Hamble Common for the benefit of the community and wildlife. We assist Eastleigh Borough Council by providing support for a variety of activities. The scrub clearance that takes place on the Common each winter is essential for the retention of its keystone heathland habitat particularly the small but significant areas of bell heather. We also provide a large number of bird boxes that protect our birds during the nesting season from predators such as grey squirrels, magpies and woodpeckers.

Can you help? Most of our tasks are manually intensive and there is no substitute for numbers but there are roles for almost all agility levels. Whether you are an individual or a company looking for a rewarding project for your Corporate Responsibility programme, we are keen to hear from you. If you are interested in joining us please take a look at our website: www.hamble-conservation.co.uk/common.html 42 | The LOOP

Bringing Alive Netley Military Hospital The beautiful and peaceful Royal Victoria Country Park at Netley was once the bustling home of the world’s first purpose-built military hospital, which stretched for a 1/4 mile along the shores of Southampton Water. Opened in 1863, the hospital was in operation for 100 years, treating military personnel from across the British Empire, including during the Boer War and First and Second World Wars. The main hospital building had 138 wards and beds for up to 1000 patients at a time but during the world wars, hutted hospitals were installed on the site by the Red Cross, significantly increasing its capacity.

Netley Hospital Heritage Days Date: Saturday 20th May and Sunday 21st May Time: 10.00am – 4.00pm Venue: Empire Room, Royal Victoria Country Park Find out about the heritage of the Netley Military Hospital and the people who worked and were treated here. With exhibitions, object handling, guided walks and hands-on activities there is plenty to occupy everyone from the very young to the young-atheart.

Get Involved Our project to tell the story of our heritage and bring Netley Military Hospital alive is creating a number of volunteer roles in interpretation, education, performance, tours, talks and visitor engagement, and we have an ongoing need for help in other areas across the Park. If you are interested in making a difference to your park, making new friends, using your skills and learning new ones, please get in touch. Email jo.basham@hants.gov.uk or call 023 9224 4064. Aged 12-16? Why not join our Vicky Park Youth Group The hospital became a leading institution in the research and treatment of tropical diseases; the most notable discovery being the vaccine for typhoid by Sir Almroth Wright. It was also one of the first military training hospitals - home to both the Army Medical School and the Queen Alexandra’s Royal Army Nursing Corps. The hospital’s role in training doctors for the British Army found its way into Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s first book, ‘A Study in Scarlet,’ as the place where John Watson, investigating partner of Sherlock Holmes, was trained. In June 1917, during WW1, the Red Cross ‘Welsh Hospital’ treated the poet Wilfred Owen for neurasthenia, a form of shell shock. After the evacuation from Dunkirk in WW2, the hospital was filled to capacity and was fully occupied until handed over to the United States Air Force on 15th January 1944. The US doctors moved into a new hutted hospital at the rear of the main building and the Navy took over the Victorian wards, apparently using their jeeps to get down the 1/4 mile long corridors! The hospital was returned to the British Army on 19th July 1945. The large number of casualties returning home from the front lines, experiencing shell shock and other psychological traumas, led to the hospital becoming a pioneer in psychiatric care. Today, little is left to indicate the scale and grandeur of the original building; the Chapel is all that remains. The Heritage Lottery Fund awarded Hampshire County Council’s project, ‘Royal Victoria: Uncovering the Stories of Netley Military Hospital,’ a heritage grant in 2016. The £3.1m project will enable the Grade II* Listed Chapel to be conserved and established as a focal point for heritage interpretation and activities, creating a sustainable future for this much-loved local landmark and providing many new opportunities for people and communities to become engaged with this very special site.

FREE Heritage Activities at Royal Victoria Country Park Archaeology Open Day Date: Saturday 8th April Time: 10.30am – 3.30pm Venue: Royal Victoria Country Park Get ‘hands-on’ with archaeology! Carry out a geophysical survey with the University of Winchester’s Archaeology Department and reveal the hidden history of Netley Military Hospital! Join the Maritime Archaeology Trust on their ‘Discovery’ Bus and explore the secret world of underwater heritage. Take a guided walk around the park and cemetery. 44 | The LOOP

Australia Your Way There are a great many tour operators offering holidays around Australia, of which the majority are by a pre-planned touring route on a coach, which is all very nice but it doesn’t allow you to personalise it and put your own stamp on the holiday. At Amity Travel we believe that the best way is to see Australia is by a self-drive itinerary where you choose where you want to go and for how long. This may all sound quite daunting but that is where Amity Travel comes in, with our expert knowledge and experience we can guide you through the planning making it as simple as possible and all at a very reasonable cost. A typical itinerary would maybe start by flying into Sydney, this gives you a couple of days to explore the incredible landmarks such as the Sydney Opera House or a chance to relax on Bondi Beach before your tailor-made adventure begins. From there, head up the coast to Brisbane for a night of sightseeing and delicious food on the River Dinner Cruise, before an opportunity to visit the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary the following day. You will need your cameras at the ready for your close-up with one of Australia’s national animals, and could even adopt one to remember your visit for years to come. Moving up through Queensland, the possibilities are endless. A trip across the water to Fraser Island is a must with its idyllic scenery of Lake McKenzie and gorgeous untouched beaches as far as the eye can see. And your final destination may well be the best of them all; the Great Barrier Reef. There are boat tours galore depending on what you would like to see most, along with stunning, picturesque walks that any seasoned traveller would revel in. And of course, scuba diving and snorkelling is always an option for those who have dreamt of swimming with fishes for the day at one of the seven natural wonders of the world. Alternatively, if the East Coast appears a little too city-based for your taste, then there is so much more that Australia offers. A flight into Adelaide will give you a more cultural start to your trip, with plenty of Art Galleries and Museums to quench your inquisitive thirst for more knowledge, as well as incredibly beautiful nature trails to explore to your heart’s content. Next on the itinery may be a journey inland towards the Outback to witness the infamous natural features of Ayers Rock (Uluru), and could experience going around the hugely impressive landmark at sunrise or sunset on a camel, making your journey even more special. Heading up through the Northern Territory,

Alice Springs offers another side to Australia with the oldest aboriginal art in the world and a lava-like sunset at Anzac Hill that you will not see anywhere else in the world. Your final stop across the heart of Australia would be Darwin, rounding off your journey with anything and everything you could desire; from putting your feet up on a sun-lounger by the beach to searching the flea markets for the best bargain, and from visiting an aviation museum to a water park, you will never want to leave. The truth is that it doesn’t have to be Australia. We at Amity Travel will organise your every hope and desire to create a holiday anywhere in the world that you will always cherish. You tell us what you want to do and where, and we will build your trip piece by piece. Whether it is a city break away for three nights in Europe to a three month adventure across several continents, we can make your dreams a reality. Navy team tackle mammoth walk for charity

FREE QUOTES

Two Royal Navy Senior Ratings and a Royal Navy veteran recently walked from the home of English Rugby to the home of Welsh Rugby to raise funds for armed forces charity Help for Heroes. Chief Petty Officers (CPO’s) Andy “Gibbo” Gibbs & Philip “Knocker” White, both serving at HMS Collingwood, along with James “JC” Cameron-Wood, a member of Black Rod’s staff at the House of Lords, started the 180 mile journey at Twickenham aiming to carry the Gilbert match ball for the Wales v England RBS 6 Nations fixture in Cardiff in February.

Finance available on new boilers * 10 year warranty, part and labour

Day four of the trek saw a substitution when “JC” returned to his day job to be replaced by CPO Kevin Bentley, also from HMS Collingwood. They passed the halfway point in Gloucestershire, crossing the Forest of Dean and heading into Wales on schedule to deliver the ball to Welsh Captain Alun Wyn Jones at the Captain’s run on 10th February.

T&Cs apply Up to 97% efficiency

CPO “Gibbo” Gibbs, a veteran of five similar walks, said: “This has been one of most organised and well executed walks we have carried out, which was well supported on both sides of the border by rugby clubs and local and the national press. Morale never waned, even in the pouring rain that welcomed us to Wales on Tuesday.”

Service plans available

The team not only raised £5,580 for Help for Heroes on the walk, but also crucially increased the profile of the charity’s work along the route. The team are now only £7,300 away from raising an incredible total of £500,000 for the charity since November 2008. You can follow their efforts via Twitter: @TEAMDIFH, Facebook: www.facebook.com/doingitforheroes, and donations can be made through: www.justgiving.com/DIFH.

Push The Boat Out this Summer Want to try something completely different this year? Something to get the air in your lungs, that will let you clear your mind, give your body a bit of a work out and that you can do with your whole family if you wish? Sailing could be your answer. Whether you’re a regular sailor, new to the sport or simply want a day out with the family, Push the Boat Out (13-21 May 2017) provides the perfect opportunity for everyone to get out on the water and have a great day out. RYA Push the Boat Out is all about people connecting with their local sailing club or provider and discovering just how easy it is to get involved in a fantastic social outdoor sport. Why not try something new at one the RYA ‘have a go’ taster sessions at your local sailing club? With two weekends and five weekdays, clubs and centres across the region will be running even more activities to appeal to a wide range of people, showcasing what the sport offers, from the freedom of being on the water, to the social buzz, the thrill of racing and the fact there really is something for everyone. Your idea of sailing might be big, expensive yachts and a life on the ocean waves. But hundreds of people regularly go down to their local sailing club every month across the south, sailing small sailboats or windsurfing with friends- just loving the buzz of being on the water. You could be one of them.

“You will be able to get out on the water with experienced sailors that you will find to be exactly like you in a boat which is suitable for you, whatever your age, ability or experience. That is why sailing is one of the most inclusive sports around. You might want a leisurely sail with your family, to experience something a bit faster and adrenaline fueled or just potter about with your partner, and you can.”

As Susie Moore, RYA Regional Development Officer for the South explains: “Whatever you think about sailing, Push the Boat Out will change your mind.

Don’t worry about kit, packing a lunch or anything else; every Push the Boat Out event will provide all the equipment you need with refreshments available.

58 | The LOOP

contactus@loopmagazine.net

You will also discover you don’t even need a boat to learn to sail locally, as the county’s clubs and centres have ones you can use, and if your whole family found you enjoyed messing about in boats so much you wanted to join a local club it could cost just £20 a month, or even less, for all of you. Still think sailing isn’t for you?

Susie added: “Sailing benefitted from significant investment from the RYA and Sport England in the past four years. Many clubs now have excellent, accessible clubhouse facilities, which include comfortable lounges, up-to-date changing areas and rooms dedicated to learning to sail and knowledge improvement. You will discover all this at Push the Boat Out.” So grab a towel and some old trainers you don’t mind getting wet and sail into summer with Push the Boat Out. Summer and NatWest T20 Blast are fast approaching!

The home of Hampshire Cricket will be sure to offer: giant inflatables, facepainting, a fun-fair and a fantastic range of food and drink too! Hampshire’s first home match of the 2017 tournament, Middlesex’s visit to the Ageas Bowl on Friday 14th July, is sure to be a scorcher – it could be the start of something special!

The nation’s favourite domestic cricket competition, NatWest T20 Blast, returns this summer and the Ageas Bowl is pleased to announce the relaunch of its group ticketing scheme ahead of the competition, rejuvenated as T20 Blast Group Experience. Groups of ten or more are sure to be thoroughly entertained and perfectly positioned for all the key moments in this year’s competition, whilst making a significant saving on the standard ticket price, receiving a generous discount of up to 15%. Beginning with a mouth-watering clash against Middlesex on Friday 14th July, Hampshire contest seven home T20 Blast matches at the Ageas Bowl this summer, including an ‘el clasicoast’ encounter with Sussex Sharks on Thursday 20th July and concluding with the visit of Somerset on Friday 18th August – both sides will be seeking revenge after Hampshire victories last season. From splayed stumps and big sixes to outlandish catches and thrilling finishes, NatWest T20 Blast has got it all! And aside from the gripping entertainment on the field, the Ageas Bowl has a vast array of free family-friendly activities to be enjoyed throughout the cricketing action, ensuring spectators have the ultimate Ageas Bowl experience.

What’s more, the Ageas Bowl will be delivering a stress-free bus service to and from the ground; whether travelling from Southampton, Eastleigh, Warsash or Winchester – with various pick-up points en-route - spectators can make saving of £12 per person on the equivalent on-the-day match ticket and parking. For all enquiries regarding group offers at the Ageas Bowl this year, please contact Stuart Giles on 023 8047 5606, via email at group.experience@ageasbowl.com or visit www.ageasbowl.com/cricket.

Same Name, Different Game…BEEFY’S Is Back! Newly redesigned and refurbished, the Ageas Bowl’s BEEFY’S Restaurant and Bar is back! BEEFY’S, a concept created by England cricketing legend, Sir Ian Botham, has relaunched as a British tapas bar and brasserie restaurant, with a passion for the countryside at its heart. Its inspiration is rooted in Sir Ian Botham’s love for our countryside, from fishing the great rivers of the UK to field pursuits and the bounty they produce. The bar and restaurant at the home of Hampshire Cricket have seen a complete overhaul and now offer a stunning new layout, with craft ales and a selection of mouth-watering tapas available from BEEFY’S new bar. The new-look restaurant includes a chef’s table and is equipped to accommodate any size of party, with the stylish and intimate space affording stunning views over the picture-perfect Ageas Bowl and surrounding countryside. The restaurant’s all-new menus and cuisine, include a vast feasting menu which has been developed for Sunday lunches and special occasions. Sir Ian Botham said: “I’m really excited by the relaunch of BEEFY’S Restaurant - the new concept and menus are fantastic and it encapsulates my passion for British country produce and high quality seasonal food.” Sir Ian, universally referred to by his nickname ‘Beefy’, is a passionate supporter of the country way of life and a keen advocate of using the very best quality ingredients from nature’s larder along with classic methods of cooking. This approach delivers some stunning dishes which let the ingredients do the talking; it doesn’t get much better than Chalk Stream trout, Exmoor red deer, Hampshire watercress, game charcuterie, Old Winchester cheese and Scottish loch salmon, all given the lightest of touches and allowed to shine.

The Ageas Bowl’s Chief Executive, David Mann said: “We are extremely proud of the new BEEFY’S Restaurant and Bar. It is the culmination of many months of hard work with our staff, consultants, suppliers and of course Sir Ian all making significant contributions to deliver something that we hope both hotel guests and local residents will really enjoy.“ BEEFY’S is open for dinner seven nights a week, whilst its famous Sunday lunches are sure to delight. To book your table and experience the very best of British cuisine and hospitality, please contact the BEEFY’S team on 023 8202 7097, via email at beefys@ageasbowl.com or visit www.beefysrestaurants.com.

The range of wines on offer at BEEFY’S have also been personally selected by Sir Ian himself – including BMW wines which was developed in partnership with the well-renowned winemaker, Geoff Merrill, and his great friend Bob Willis. contactus@loopmagazine.net

Health & Fitness Average Geoff It’s great to be back for another issue to bring you some workouts to help you reach your goals. Around this time of year many peoples best intentions and resolutions have started to lose momentum or derailed altogether. Life happens and it can be hard to stay focused when your attention is being pulled several different ways but I want you to remember why you got started or why you want to get started. Visualise where you want your goals to take you, be it weight loss, muscle gain, a fitness event or that extra confidence to do what you’ve never done. See that vision every day and plot a path of how you’re going to get there and stay focused. This month I’ve dropped into Anytime Fitness over at Locks Heath to bring you two workouts. One is all bodyweight and can be done anywhere if you cant get to the gym and the other can be done with just a kettlebell. Pick a weight that is challenging but not too heavy. Don’t let your ego lead you to injury!! Both workouts are 5 rounds of each with 40 seconds work and 20 seconds rest for each movement. I’m also bringing a post workout meal you might want to consider incorporating into your nutrition plan. Feel free to tweak it according to your needs.

2

Shoulder Press Left: Hold the kettlebell in the ‘racked’ position over your left shoulder. Keep your core engaged as always as you press the kettlebell up. Repeat the same for the right side in the next movement

As always you can find more workouts, food and motivation by going to: Instagram: @average.geoff Twitter: @average_geoff Facebook & Youtube: search ‘Average Geoff’ To find out more about Anytime fitness, you can find them at www.anytimefitness.co.uk Get up, get out and get it done!

Burpee High Pulls: Start by standing back a little from the kettlebell so you don’t smash your face! Squat down and place your hands on the floor, kick back into a plank position and perform a pushup. Come back to the squat position and do a little jump forward to the kettlebell. Keeping a straight back, Pull the kettlebell up to just under your chin and lower back to the floor. Do a little jump back and repeat.

2

Kettlebell Swings: Grab the Kettlebell with both hands, bending your hips with a slight bend in your knees.Pick up the Kettlebell, letting it swing slightly between your legs and then swing the Kettlebell forward to about chest level, using a hip-snapping motion. Let the bell drop without any restriction and hike it between your legs. REMEMBER: Keep your back straight and your glutes tight throughout the duration of the Kettlebell exercise. Keep your heels down and your core tight throughout the duration.

Microsoft Office Alternatives… When you think of office software, Microsoft Office is probably the first one that springs into mind. This is hardly surprising, as so many computers come with a copy of it pre-installed. Unfortunately, in many cases it is just a trial version, after which you will need to set up either a subscription for Office 365, or fork out for an Office 2016 licence which is costly. Word processing, spreadsheets and presentations have become daily tasks for many people now, from school work all the way through to typing letters out to the family, there are few people that can actually get by without the use of these programs. But what if you don’t fancy the idea of paying out for your office software? Thankfully, there is quite a selection of free office software available, and in this edition of PC Know How, we will be going over the newly updated LibreOffice.

LibreOffice is a powerful office suite, with a clean interface and feature rich tools, and as you would expect from un upgrade, runs faster and smoother than its predecessor. LibreOffice includes several applications that are compatible with Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Publisher. LibreOffice also works with the newer DOCX and XLSX type files commonly used in the newer versions of Microsoft Office. Some new features also include support for signing PDFs and embedding them into documents, templates for presentations in Impress (the LibreOffice equivalent to PowerPoint) and they also show the keyboard shortcuts in the right-click menu.

Birds Nest Soup

Going the extra mile

A City in Malaysia is under threat of losing its proud World Heritage status because of its controversial birds’ nest farming industry.

Moonlit Memories Walk celebrates 10th anniversary

George Town is the capital city of the state of Penang, Malaysia, and was awarded World Heritage status back in 2008 by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO). However their status as a World Heritage site is under major risk of being revoked, following warnings from UNESCO in 2013 to cease the conversion of old houses in the town to attract Swiftlets to nest there. Malaysia is the world’s third largest producer of edible birds’ nests, in an industry that is estimated to make in excess of $450m a year, predominantly through exports to China, where the nests are considered a medicinal delicacy. In October last year Sri Lankan customs seized and destroyed over $500,000 worth of birds’ nests that were destined for sale in China. The customs officers explained that they disposed of the nests to ‘demonstrate our commitment to protect endangered species’, although Swiftlets’ conservation status is at ‘least concern’. Local residents in George Town have complained about the noise pollution cause by loudspeakers set up by the farmers to play bird calls in an attempt to attract the Swiftlets. Crystal Swiftlets, a Malaysian based supplier of Swiftlet farming equipment, believes that a compromise must be reached. The company has said that if properly enforced regulations were to be applied, it would diffuse the tension between the local residents and the farmers. However Swiftlet farmers have previously stated that they would only be willing to cease farming in Georgetown if the Malaysian government were to compensate them. The swiftlet nests are comprised of small sticks and twigs that are held together by saliva. These nests can sell for more than $1,500 a kilogram, but local residents now believe that the industry has ran out of control, and fear that if it continues to fuel controversy, then George Town could lose its World Heritage status, of which the local residents are immensely proud. In 2005, the Malaysian Swiftlet Farmers Association estimated that around 10% of George Town’s 4,000 houses had been converted into swiftlet farms, but informal counts suggest that the number may be much higher today.

Moonlit Memories Walk, the flagship event for Rowan’s Hospice, celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. Over the last nine years, almost 10,000 people have taken part in the walks, raising an impressive £1.8 million overall. Rowans Hospice is looking for local companies to sponsor the Moonlit Memories Walk in its 10th year, to ensure that more money can be spent on care for local people. This year’s event takes place on 10th June, starting at 10pm with a choice of a 10-mile or 6-mile route along Southsea seafront, through Portsmouth Historic Dockyard and past the Spinnaker Tower. Local companies and organisations can get involved by entering teams of walkers or providing marshals to help direct the walkers and give them cheers of encouragement around the course. A corporate partnership can be beneficial to both parties as sponsoring a mile of the walk will provide promotional opportunities to hundreds of local people. Eliza Dunn, Corporate Fundraiser at Rowans Hospice, said: “We are extremely grateful for all the corporate support we receive; including gifts, volunteering and sponsorship. Any help we receive from businesses enables the Hospice to continue to provide essential care for people affected by life-limiting illnesses in Portsmouth and South East Hampshire. “By sponsoring the Moonlit Memories Walk you will not only be giving local people the opportunity to take part in a special event to remember and celebrate the lives of loved ones but also their fundraising will directly benefit others who need the services.” For more information about corporate partnership opportunities with Rowan’s Hospice, contact Eliza Dunn, Corporate Fundraiser, on: 023 9223 8532, or alternatively email: fundraising@rowanshospice.co.uk.

Bistro 8 Artist exhibiting at Bistro 8. Teaming up with Gallery 7 who’s owner artist Victoria Mead is coordinating various one man shows as well as exhibiting works from the following artists. Exhibition is being set up from Monday 13 March. For more information please call 01489 854259

Philip Lyons Philip’s main subject is the Cornish landscape. Not just its rugged coast but its quiet, sleepy creeks and its lush green valleys and the buildings in the landscape. What is important to Philip is finding a balance between abstract ideas and depicting the real place. He exhibits widely..

Mike Moss Born in Preston, Lancashire in 1948. Emigrated to Australia in his twenties and later travelled to New Zealand where he held his first exhibition. Returned to the UK to attend both Preston and Plymouth Colleges of Art before eventually settling in Cornwall. In 1984 Michael won the Western Morning News Open Art Competition and in 1991 he was a prize-winner in the EccoGoodhousekeeping Open Exhibition. Exhibiting three South West Opens and in 1996 he won prizes in the Mixed Media and Drawing categories of the Society of Artists for Cornwall. In 1997 he was a prize-winner in the Sterts Open Competition and in 1998 he won two prizes in the Watercolour and Drawing sections in the Society of Artists in Cornwall. In 2006 he won the Watercolour prize at Stuart House. ..s.

The work is highly influenced by the landscapes of North Cornwall and she uses this as an inspiration for her abstract forms. She exhibits her work in her gallery and in many others in the southwest as well as further afield. She studied at Falmouth School of Art and Brunel University and is an exhibiting member of the CCA. She is happy to undertake commissions.

Francis Spice Originally from Somerset I moved to Cornwall in 1998. I had worked with clay for a number of years making hand modelled figures and animals. I then studied ceramics and design at Cornwall College and in 2008 I completed my Higher National Diploma. My work now is mainly hand built slab work. From a flat piece of clay I cut out my desired shape before assembling the piece together. I use under glazes, glazes, stains, oxides and gold lustre to decorate my work. Each piece is fired 2-3 times. My inspiration comes from everything and anything.

Richard Gibson The boxes I make are based on the pattern developed by the Shaker communities in America during the 19th century. Inspired by their simplicity and work ethic, all the boxes are made by hand and use hardwoods sourced locally and sustainably including from some of the well-known estates such as Stock Gaylard, Westobirt and Heligan. In addition to the traditional stacking box design where on size fits inside the next for ease of storage, I also produce contemporary pieces based on the same principles such as range of trays and egg carriers.”

John Griffiths Interested in the essence of landscape and its timeless and spiritual quality. Favourite artists include Turner, Cezanne and Paul Henry. His work is highly textured and although previously working in watercolours he now concentrates mainly on mixed media and oils using materials from the location. Inspired by the rugged landscapes of North Cornwall, Ireland and the dramatic and colourful landscapes of the Languedoc in southern France. His work has been purchased by the National Trust and he exhibits widely. Commissions undertaken. 72 | The LOOP

Saul Cathcart is a contemporary, landscape artist living in and working in Cornwall. He paints exclusively in situ, so he can respond to his surroundings directly. As a result, his paintings have great observational skill and a unique energy. ‘Working out in the landscape is where it all happens. The painting can be pushed in many different directions and allows for spontaneity in the marks I make. My paintings are about relaying my emotions on to canvas as well as capturing a place.’ Saul studied Fine Art Sculpture at Winchester School of Art and gained a fine art degree in 2001. Since then he quickly returned to his first love of painting and started re-exploring the Cornish landscape he grew up with. He has regular shows in Cornwall and Devon.

Peter Levy Peter Levy was born in Hampshire in the 1950’s and has lived there, near the Solent and the River Hamble for much of his life. It is this coastline that inspires his ceramics and glass pieces. Peter studied 3D design at The University of Portsmouth before completing an MA in Fine Art and he has been working as a professional artist ever since. He is a successful and popular local artist, whose work is exhibited in many prestigious galleries across the country. contactus@loopmagazine.net

Local astronaut returning to space On 15th December 2015, former army pilot Major Tim Peake blasted off into orbit from Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan in a Russian Soyuz capsule alongside NASA’s Tim Kopra and cosmonaut Yuri Malenchenko. After settling in to life on the ISS, Peake made history on 15th January 2016 when he became the first British astronaut to complete a spacewalk. Alongside fellow astronaut Tim Kopra, Tim ventured through the air lock to carry out key repairs on the space station. It was announced in January 2017 by Local Astronaut Tim Peake that he will be going back up to the International Space Station (ISS). Whilst speaking at the London Science Museum, Major Peake announced he will be taking on a second European Space Agency (ESA) mission in the future. Venturing back to the ISS to carry out more work. The Science Museum on January 26th on Twitter confirmed the news. Tim said he was greatly excited about returning to space. Telling sky news - “It’s what every astronaut wants to do,” “Myself and my classmates from 2009, we are all going to get the second mission to the space station which is wonderful. “The work that is being done on board the space station is incredibly important and tremendously exciting as well. “It is only natural to want to return. The one thing you miss is the view of planet Earth, of course. It is the most spectacular thing you can possibly see.” Greg Clark, secretary of state for business, energy and industrial strategy said: “Tim Peake’s Principia mission inspired a generation, and showed just how far science can take you. “Our space sector supports industries worth more than £250 billion to the economy, employing people in high-skilled jobs every corner of the UK. It has enormous potential to grow further – showing why we have placed

such an emphasis on science, innovation and skills in our plans for an Industrial Strategy.” The announcement was made at the science museum next to the Soyuz TMA-19M spacecraft that launched Major Peake into orbit and returned him to Earth, as it was unveiled for public display, the capsule sits amongst other exhibits charting the history of space exploration. In June 2016, Tim said he would return to space “in a heartbeat”. Adding that “the best place you could possibly, as a professional, wish to be,” speaking to assembled media at the ESA astronaut centre in Germany. Peake made history when he became the European Space Agency’s (ESA) first British astronaut, as well as the first British astronaut to visit the ISS. He will now make history again as the only Brit to visit the station twice. He follows in the footsteps of Helen Sharman, who became the first British astronaut in 1991 when she flew to Russian space station Mir, as part of a privately funded mission.

Funding awarded to schemes to support space entrepreneurs The UK Space Agency has awarded just under £150,000 to three business incubation centres across the UK

resources and collaborating on events and initiatives with other business incubators. Just under £50,000 has gone to a joint scheme between the National Oceanography Centre’s Marine Robotics Innovation Centre, in Southampton, and the University of Portsmouth’s Innovation Space. The money will be used to provide an innovation hub in Southampton with world-leading expertise in developing next generation Marine Autonomous Systems and an incubation centre in Portsmouth. The space sector is a UK success story, with growth averaging over 8% a year over the last decade, a turnover in excess of £11 billion a year and ambitious plans to achieve 10% of the global space market by 2030. Much of this growth is anticipated to come from companies using space-derived data or services in a broad range of different sectors. Helen Roberts, Regional Growth Manager at the UK Space Agency, said:

These awards will support entrepreneurs and small companies in the space industry. The Agency is working with UK industry to deliver world-class science innovation support, in line with the Government’s Industrial Strategy, which emphasises the importance of science, innovation and skills. The business incubation centres in the Solent, Scotland and the South West of England, will support start-up companies by providing advice and support, giving access to facilities and 78 | The LOOP

“We are delighted to extend the network of incubators supporting space sector start-ups to cover even more of the UK. “These new business incubators add to the existing network of SETsquared, Leicester Dock, UNIP in Nottingham, Loughborough University, Business Durham, Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) at its Daresbury Laboratory site, Glyndwr Innovations in St Asaph, North Wales and the European Space Agency’s business incubator at Harwell. “We look forward to working with them and seeing them help exciting new businesses to develop and flourish.”

Shooting Stars – What are they and when to see them A “falling star” or a “shooting star” has nothing at all to do with a star but are caused by tiny bits of dust and rock called meteoroids. As falling into the Earth’s atmosphere, they can be seen to be ‘burning up’ as they go producing a strong streak of light. The short-lived trail of light the burning meteoroid produces is called a meteor. If any part of the meteoroid survives burning up and hits the Earth, that remaining bit is then called a meteorite. In fact, we see a meteor’s streak not because the particle is “burning up,” but instead because air molecules along its path become flash-heated to thousands of degrees. Meteors can occur at any time on any night and appear in any part of the sky. On most night’s a half dozen of these sporadic (random) meteors appear hourly. Some cultures have always had strong beliefs and superstitions in the meaning of shooting stars. Traditionally shooting stars also meant a new birth and changes in one’s life and also a wish for a better life. In old Greece falling stars were believed to be rising or falling human souls. According to Jewish and Christian tradition fallen stars reflect fallen angels and demons. In more common beliefs though, it’s a good omen, when one makes a wish when one sees a falling star, the wish will come true – ‘apparently’. Similar superstitions are widespread even in cultures remote from Europe: in Chile, you must pick up a stone in the same moment, and in the Philippine’s, tie a knot in a handkerchief. At certain times of year, you are likely to see a great number of meteors in the night sky. These events are called meteor showers and they occur when the Earth passes through the trail of debris left by a comet as it orbits the Sun. These meteor showers are given names based on the constellation present in the sky from which they appear to emanate from. However, it is important to understand that the meteoroids (and the meteors) do not really originate from the constellations or any of the stars in the constellations, originating from the way the Earth encounters the particles moving in the path of a comet’s orbit. Associating the shower name with the region of the sky they come from helps astronomers know where to look! The LOOP predicts the best meteor shower in 2017 will

now be the Geminids in mid-December. Derived from the Greek word meteoros (meaning “high in the air”), meteors are bits of interplanetary debris slamming into Earth’s upper atmosphere at altitudes of 80 to 120 km (50 to 75 miles). The particles themselves are not large — typically they’re no bigger than big sand grains, and something the size of a pea can create a meteor that’s dramatically bright. That’s because they strike at 30 to 70 km (20 to 45 miles) per second, and all that kinetic energy is rapidly dissipated by frictional heat. For the best possible viewing experience, find a dark location, make yourself comfortable in a reclining chair, and wear plenty of warm clothing (as appropriate).

Goodwood Festival of Speed 2017 ‘Peaks of Performance – Motorsports Game-Changers’ This year sees the 25th running of this fabulous event in the grounds of Goodwood House from June 29th – July 2nd. This years’ main theme ‘ Peaks of Performance – Motorsports Game Changers’ refers to the racing machines that were so fast, powerful and complicated that the rules had to be changed to rein them in. Cars such as the 1,000 bhp turbocharged Grand Prix machines of the 1980’s, the unlimited Group 7 sportscars from the glory days of Can-Am, the 750kg formula European Championship leviathans of the mid-1930’s and the winged Group B rally cars. If you prefer your action on two wheels rather than four, then you are in for a treat with 500cc Grand Prix bikes from the two stroke powerband era, 200bhp Moto GP machines as well as World Superbike winners. All these cars and bikes can be viewed at close quarters in the main paddock and Cathedral paddock where you will often spot many of the drivers and riders too. The weekend kicks off on Thursday 29th June with the now customary Moving Motor Show. This is an ideal opportunity to view the latest road cars on the manufacturers stands and see them demonstrated on the Hillclimb. For the first time, this year will also see cars from the Supercar Paddock being demonstrated on the Hill. Entry price is much lower on this day with fewer crowds and you will still be able to view all the cars, bikes and modern F1 cars in the paddock. All the non hillclimb action will be taking place, such as the GAS area, Rally Stage and shopping area.

The main hillclimb action starts on Friday with all the timed runs and demonstrations. As in past years there will representation from most of the current F1 teams with many star drivers expected over the weekend. At the time of writing the specific teams and drivers have yet to be confirmed but usually include Mercedes, McLaren, Ferrari, Williams, Renault etc. If you want a break from the hillclimb action, then there is always plenty to see elsewhere. The Cartier Style et luxe Concours on the stable lawns always excites bringing together a collection of landmark cars each year, and being judged by celebrities from the automotive and art and design worlds. Live off road motor bike and BMX bike action in the GAS arena is always a big crowd puller with amazing stunts by the best riders in their field. The Rally Stage further up the hill makes for spectacular viewing as both modern and historic rally cars blast through the forest stages in clouds of dust, many being driven by top rally drivers both current and past. The off road 4x4 demonstration area is another popular destination further up the hill. If you fancy a bit of shopping there are trade stands selling car books, models, clothes, leather goods and general lifestyle products galore. Please note that entry is by advanced ticket only and tickets sell out early so don’t delay ! Contact: www.goodwood.com

Community News Hampshire Search and Rescue

single most significant contributor to air quality problems in Southampton and Eastleigh. The scheme will include helping taxi operators to improve their fleets through the replacement of high polluting diesel vehicles with clean hybrid and electric vehicles. Work will now begin on how this can best be delivered directly to taxi and private hire operators to help them upgrade existing diesel vehicles to cleaner alternatives

New Country Park planned for Bursledon

At its recent AGM, Hampshire Search and Rescue (HANTSAR) thanked Linda Taylor as she stood down from her role as the charity’s secretary. She was presented with an engraved vase by Deputy Lieutenant of Hampshire, Rear Admiral Henderson CB CBE DL. Linda joined HANTSAR in 2003, training as a Search Technician and then as a Search Team Leader. For the past 12 years she has acted as secretary to the management committee. She has combined this volunteer work with her busy life as a foster carer, fostering over 100 children over the years. She will continue helping HANTSAR as a Support Team member.

Southampton and Eastleigh council’s team up in breath of fresh air An exciting partnership between Eastleigh Borough Council and Southampton City Council has been awarded £254,000 to support the introduction of ultra-low emission taxis into the fleets of taxi and private hire operators across the two authorities. The funding has been awarded by the Government Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA), following a successful joint bid to the 2016/17 Air Quality Grant programme. Cabinet Lead for Transport, Cllr David Airey, said: “We are delighted to have received this support to help us take practical steps to manage air pollution. This funding will allow us to support local businesses to encourage more sustainable transport and improve air quality. We hope that providing a positive message about alternative vehicle technologies as well as supporting the local taxi and private hire trade will help to improve the environment for their customers, along with everyone who lives and works in our area.” Poor air quality affects the health of residents and impacts on the local environment. Road transport is recognised as the

Council Leader Keith House and Chair of Bursledon, Hamble and Hound Local Area Committee Cllr Tonia Craig on the site of the new country park.

Bursledon is set to gain a new Country Park for local residents, after the Council recently purchased the site that was previously used for Car Boot sales. The Council bought the site to secure green space for the future, reduce traffic on Hamble Lane by providing a new access road onto Bursledon Road from Taylor Wimpey’s housing site, and to develop around 180 new homes. The previous landowner has been keen to sell the site for years, following outline planning permission being granted in 2015. The new parkland area will be 10.5 hectares in size, and will include a mix of public open space areas, play equipment, new footpaths and improvement to existing public rights of way. The existing grass fields will be managed to improve potential habitats for wildlife. This will include mown paths through these fields offering a variety of walking routes with specimen trees and benches. New woodland planting along the existing copse and stream will improve this area as a wildlife haven. Existing trees and hedgerows will be kept to provide a network of ‘green’ links around the perimeter of the site. Council Leader, Cllr Keith House, said: “This exciting development to provide a new country park, secure the green gap, reduce traffic on Hamble Lane and provide homes for local people has been made possible by the Council’s investment in the site. As part of the Council’s investment portfolio, it will also help us keep council tax down and protect local services.” contactus@loopmagazine.net
