“My wife and I felt that our kitchen was looking tired and needed an update. We had already had the worktops changed, but felt that the whole appearance needed to be updated. So we called in Ben from Happy Kitchens who showed us examples of what could be achieved and we decided to go ahead. The Happy Kitchens fitters were brilliant, their workmanship is second to none and they were very helpful when questions arose. The trans-formation has been incredible and worth every penny. We would definitely recommend them to others thinking about updating their kitchens.” Mr and Mrs Smith

The green, green grass of home Ornamental lawns have been a feature in Europe for centuries, yet nobody of Est. 45 years loves lawns like the English! Why is it we feel that no English garden is complete with the final touches of a lush and emerald green lawn?
Titchfield
However, the lawns that are being laid are increasingly artificial with one in four homes no longer having a real lawn.
New generation The first artificial grass products were all the same rather gaudy vivid green colour and the surface was quite rough. Today some artificial grass has a higher stitch count making the fibre feel thicker and softer. Also, the new generation of artificial grass comes in an array of different shades of green with variegated strands to give it a more natural look. Now the mantra is you can have a great looking lawn all year round with very little maintenance.
Natural or fake? Artificial grass came on the scene over 45 years ago and once an object of ridicule, fake grass is now an acceptable feature in our gardens. Furthermore, in 2010 the Chelsea Flower Show allowed its first show garden to use artificial turf. Artificial lawns have come a long way since they first appeared on the market and from a distance, many of us would not be able to tell the difference between a fake or fresh lawn.
Dogs love it
No muddy paws or shoes Much of the reason for turning to artificial grass is because we are now a ‘time poor’ nation. We want a product or feature that is low maintenance and trouble free. For families this makes for a more enjoyable outdoor life at home as they can now have a ready made outdoor carpet! No muddy shoes, or paws, no bare patches and the material is permeable, which ensures rainfall and other fluids drain through the surface effortlessly. So good it looks real
For those of us with pets, the grass can be hosed down when necessary and simply brushed up to keep the grass looking good as new. So with no mowing and hardly any maintenance, what is there not to like about it?
Magic of fresh grass Despite the obvious virtues of artificial lawns and certainly for the smaller or contemporary gardens, it is an extremely popular choice, who amongst us does not love the earthy smell of freshly mown grass during the summer or the soft magical feel of soft grass on bare feet? Further qualities of fresh grass are its contributions to a number of key ecosystems and the fact lawns help to filter out pollution, dust particles and help to reduce urban noise thanks to its ability to absorb sound waves.
Artificial lawns blend well with water features
So, regardless of all the benefits of fake grass against the work that goes with real grass, nothing will ever quite beat the charm of a beautiful traditional lawn. contactus@loopmagazine.net

Wickham Festival is “Best Yet” “We had a few issues with the weather but we overcame them and really turned it around. We have had so much praise from people who loved it and really appreciated our efforts. I really must thank all the crew and backstage staff who were magnificent. “We had record ticket sales and a lot of those were first-timers many of whom have already told us they will be back next year which is really gratifying after all our hard work.” As a thank you, fans who attended the festival can save £60 on an adult weekend season ticket for August 2-5 next year if they buy before Tuesday August 15 at the reduced rate of £100 or £50 for children aged 10-16. Under 10’s will again get free admission. Chegwyn added: “It is our way of rewarding those who came this year and put up with the mud on the opening day. Many festivals would have cancelled but we spent more than £30,000 to get the event on.
This year’s Wickham Festival has been declared the biggest and best yet after breaking box office records. More than 20,000 music fans poured into the tiny Hampshire village to see the likes KT Tunstall, 10CC, Show of Hands and the Levellers. The event endured a difficult start as unprecedented rain turned the site into a quagmire just hours before it was due to open.
“We brought in diggers to clear the mud, tractors to tow vehicles and we covered the site in straw – and it worked. The fields there are remarkably quick to drain and it was wonderful to see so many people enjoying the festival. Our reward genuinely is to see so many happy, smiling faces. “We had some fantastic bands and for the first time we introduced a late night comedy stage which was a big success. We brought in Tom Walker aka internet sensation Jonathan Pie and that proved so popular we had to put his Q&A on the second stage. “The bands all said how much they enjoyed playing here and what a good time they had and much they valued our hard work. We were delighted to see so many people having such a good time. We look forward to welcoming them back next summer.” Weekend tickets for August 2-5, 2018 cost £160. Those aged 10-16 get in for half price with Under 10’s admitted free. Those renewing by cheque or cash before August 15 will save £60 on an adult weekend ticket, online renewals save £50. Full details can be found at www.wickhamfestival.co.uk or on twitter @festivalwickham or email eastfest@talk21.com
Many other festivals might have cancelled – Hope and Glory was called off in Liverpool this weekend - but organisers refused to be beaten and staff worked tirelessly to not only get the event on but to turn it into a triumph. Organiser Peter Chegwyn said: “We have had a fantastic festival; the feedback has been phenomenal. 6 | The LOOP

What starts as a mild response to sudden noise can escalate as pets fail to cope with the emotional challenges generated by fireworks. This can lead to a rise in anxiety that continues long after the firework season ends; increasing fear generally and seriously affecting their quality of life....and yours! Surgeries are able to offer some excellent advice on preparing your pets for the firework season and how to help them remain calm. There is a greater choice of effective nutraceuticals and medications available. If you would like some advise, please contact the surgery to arrange a FREE consultation with one of our nursing team who will be happy to help. Heathside Veterinary Surgery 01489 607001

Sponsored Walk in aid of Rowans Hospice
Nuffield Southampton Theatres
Wednesday 25th October Children will have the opportunity to take part in a sponsored walk in aid of Rowans Hospice, around Portsmouth Historic Dockyard and HM Naval Base. The event takes place during the October half-term break. The event has raised thousands of pounds to support people living in Portsmouth area affected by life-limiting illnesses. All children aged 0-16 must be accompanied by an adult who can accompany up to four children. The walk starts at 6.30pm and goes past HMS Victory which will be illuminated in all her glory, into the Naval Base which will specially be opened for the public and back to Boathouse No. 7 where all children receive a medal, snack and drink. Everyone attending will have the opportunity to light a candle in St. Ann’s Church, to make a memory star and place it on the memory board. The event is supported by Rowans Meerkat Service and there will also be volunteers who have experienced a significant bereavement and who were supported by the service themselves, such as Georgia Hodges who is using her experience to help other children to deal with the loss of someone dear. The cost is £5 to register a child and an accompanying adult can Georgia walk for free.
Southampton’s new theatre opens with the world premiere of Howard Brenton’s The Shadow Factory – 7th February to 3rd March 2018. Director of Nuffield Southampton Theatres, Samuel Hodges, announces the inaugural production at Southampton’s new city centre theatres NST City –the world premiere of Howard Brenton’s The shadow Factory. The production opens on 15th February and runs until 3rd March. The play is set in Southampton in the autumn of 1940. The Battle of Britain rages in the skies and a Luftwaffe drops 2,300 bombs in three raids, devastating the city and destroying the Woolston Supermarine Spitfire Factory. But from the chaos, a story of courage and community spirit emerges. The play displays scenes in Government bunkers, the town and parties as bomb falls. The Director, Samuel Hodges, says he has been stroked by the plays’ significance that should be taken as an example in the future: “We famously live in a particularly segregated country right now – and our political leaders do nothing to reassure us that cohesion and empathy will be at the forefront. This story is both epic in its power and impact, but also incredibly human – it’s about individuals coming together, overcoming personal bias and mistrust, to achieve something great on their own terms”. The Director, further adds that working with Howard Brenton is an honour especially for the new theatre the for Southampton’s fastrising artistic and cultural quarter. Howard Brenton has written over 50 plays including Danton’s Death staged at the National Theatre same as Paul, Anne Boleyn (Shakespeare’s Globe), In Extremis (Shakespeare’s Globe and retitled Eternal Love). He had also wrote 13 episodes of the first four series of the BBC Television Drama Spooks, winner of BAFTA 2003 Best Television Drama Series. NST City will include a flexible 450 seat main house theatre, a 135 seat studio, screening facilities, rehearsal, workshop spaces and bar and restaurant managed by Southampton’s 2017 Business of the Year winner, Mettricks. NST City will show high quality professional work from local, national and international artists and allow the programme to include dance, film and music.

easyJet set to fly from Southampton Airport for the first time The new network point becomes airline’s 139th airport New flight to Geneva takes-off in December 2017 and is set to appeal to Ski passengers. easyJet, Europe’s leading airline, has today announced it is to start flying from a new UK airport with a new route from Southampton to Geneva. It will be the first time the airline has ever operated from the South Coast airport and aims to provide passengers from across the region with additional options for winter ski holidays or connecting through the Swiss hub. Flights from Southampton to Geneva will start on 14th December 2017 and operate three times a week throughout the winter on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. easyJet expects to fly over 10,000 passengers a year in the first winter served by its Airbus A320 aircraft. Flights are on sale from today on easyjet.com, app and GDS with fares starting from as little as £31.99* one way per person. Ali Gayward, UK Country Manager, easyJet: ‘We are delighted to be announcing that we will commence flights from Southampton - a new airport on easyJet’s already comprehensive route network.
About easyJet easyJet is Europe’s leading airline offering a unique and winning combination of the best route network connecting Europe’s primary airports, with great value fares and friendly service.
Dave Lees, Managing Director, Southampton Airport, said:
easyJet flies on more of Europe’s most popular routes than any other airline. easyJet carries 73 million passengers annually, of which around 20% are travelling on business. easyJet flies over 260 aircraft on more than 800 routes to over 139 airports across 31 countries. More than 300 million Europeans live within one hour’s drive of an easyJet airport.
“We are very excited to announce that easyJet will be commencing operations to Geneva three times a week from Southampton Airport this winter. I am sure that our customers from across the region will be pleased to have even more choice for reaching the ski slopes from December onwards. We look forward to welcoming easyJet to Southampton later in the year.”
easyJet aims to be a good corporate citizen, employing people on local contracts in seven countries across Europe in full compliance with national laws and recognising their trade unions. The airline supports a number of local charities and also has a corporate partnership with UNICEF which has raised over £8m for the most vulnerable children since it was established in 2012.
*Fares per person, one way, based on two people travelling on the same booking.
The airline takes sustainability seriously. easyJet invests in the latest technology, operates efficiently and fills most of its seats which means that an easyJet passenger’s carbon footprint is 22% less than a passenger on a traditional airline, flying the same aircraft on the same route.
“Many people are already starting to plan ahead for their winter holidays and with flights to Geneva from Southampton, passengers from across the region are able to take advantage of our low fares.”

Southampton Airport celebrates busiest summer on record Fantastic news for Southampton Airport this month as it announced that is has just enjoyed a record breaking summer after 445,556 passengers travelled through its doors during July and August, an increase of 4.2% compared to the same period last year which saw 427,388 passengers flying through. August proved to be the airport’s busiest month on record so far with 225,682 passengers whilst 219,874 passengers used the airport in July. Prior to this year, the airport’s busiest month had been in August 2016 when 219,757 passengers took to the skies! The airport also announced that it hopes to see the trend in passenger numbers rising, as the year heads into winter, especially with the introduction of its shiny new airlines, easyJet and powdair. This will be the first time that easyJet has ever operated from Southampton, something which passengers and staff alike are very excited about. Flights to Geneva will start from the airport on December the 14th and will operate three times a week on Tuesday, Thursdays and Sundays with prices starting from only £32.99*. powdair is a brand new airline which aims to make flying to Switerland for ski much easier by putting passengers right in the heart of all the top ski resorts. powdair will connect passengers to their favourite winter resorts such as Verbier, Crans Montana, Anzère, Nendaz, Thyon 4 Vallées (Val D’Herens), Portes du Soleil (France and Switzerland) and Zermatt via Sion Airport at the very heart of the Valais region. Flights to Sion will be on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays and will start on 15th December.
more people to Southampton Airport this winter.” Not only is Southampton Airport buzzing over its busiest summer ever but it also recently announced that it had surpassed the 2 million passengers in a rolling year mark. Between May 2016 and April 2017 the airport welcomed 2,029,873 passengers, the highest number since commercial flights began nearly 100 years ago in 1918! The airport attributed its increased passenger numbers to the number of new airlines that it launched last year. In 2016, the airport welcomed four new airlines including KLM with worldwide flights via its hub in Amsterdam, bmi regional which launched a new service to Munich and Aer Lingus which launched direct flights to Cork. It was also the first airport in the UK to offer scheduled flights with European based airline, Volotea, to Majorca and then Ibiza for 2017. *one way per person based on two people flying
Dave Lees, Managing Director at Southampton Airport, says “It is brilliant to be able to announce yet another record breaking summer here at Southampton Airport. It is a clear indication that when the routes are on offer, people would rather fly from their local airport than travel to London. We hope that the arrival of our new airlines for ski, easyJet and powdair, will bring even contactus@loopmagazine.net

Head to the Western Cape this winter, for Whales, Wine and Wild Flowers South Africa has always been seen as a long-haul destination and consequently requires at least two weeks out of your annual holiday allowance, that is until recently. Now all of a sudden more and more tour operators are offering it as a short break destination, and whilst 3 nights would be pushing it you can see why it is possible to put together a stay of between 4 and 7 days without feeling the need for another holiday upon your return. Firstly whilst the flying time is around 11 hours the time difference is never more than 1 hour from the UK, meaning you shouldn’t find yourself waking up at 3am ready to tuck into your holiday bacon & eggs, nor should you be completely exhausted and ready for bed by mid-afternoon. Secondly with more and more airlines now offering a premium economy cabin or extra leg room for a supplement, you can now travel in relative comfort at an affordable price. All of which means you don’t need several days to acclimatise as you would if heading off to the Far-East or west coast of America for example.

The two South African cities that can be reached with the minimum of effort are Johannesburg and Cape Town, whilst the first is known more as a centre of business and gateway to the country as a whole, the latter is very much a centre of tourism in its own right. Cape Town is the heartbeat of the Western Cape, this young vibrant city is not shy to walk the line between tradition and innovation offering something for everyone from history and culture to the excitement of parasailing and abseiling down the side of Cape Town’s great Icon ‘Table Mountain’ this is a city that you will want to return to again and again. There is much to see and do, for the first time visitor a city tour is always a good way to start, you will find that most tours will visit the Malay Quarter, Castle of Good Hope, the V&A Waterfront before finishing with a trip up Table Mountain by cable car; at 1067 metres above sea level you will find the view to be truly breathtaking and a great way to end your first day. Further trips out should include a walk around Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden, on the eastern slope of Table Mountain you will discover one of the world’s most beautiful botanical gardens with over
4000 indigenous plants. Robben Island, this island jail was once a lunatic asylum and a leper colony, but is best known as the place where Nelson Mandela and scores of other political visitors did time, it can be a humbling and inspiring day out in equal measure. Depending on time further days out should include the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve, the Diamond Works and a Township tour.
Call in for a coffee and chat
If you are looking to stretch your stay to a full week, you would be wise to hire a car for a few days and head out into the winelands of the Stellenbosch, Paarl and Frannschoek before moving onto the coast and Hermanus, home to possibly the best land based viewing point for a spot of whale watching on the entire planet, especially so from July to October when the Southern Right Whales visit to calve and nurture their young. All in all the Western Cape makes for a great winter destination and whether you are planning to visit for a few days or a few weeks, your first port of call for the best in planning and advice should always be Amity Travel Private Client.

Computer Know How! Windows Live Mail – The End of an Era In this edition of Computer Know How, we are looking at what we can use instead of everyone’s favourite free email client, Windows Live Mail. Unfortunately, Windows has stopped the support for its trusty Windows Live Mail, it hasn’t had an update since 2012 and has gotten quite clunky in its old age. Thankfully, there are a few really good (and free!) alternatives that are just as easy to use, and packed full of features for you to try out! We are going to be looking at 2 of the most popular choices, Mozilla Thunderbird and eM Client.
1. Mozilla Thunderbird Thunderbird comes from the same developers as the Mozilla Firefox web browser. The best thing about Thunderbird is that you don’t get pestered by pesky adverts asking you to pay for the full version. Thunderbird also comes with a setup wizard that you can use to import your messages, contacts and calendars. It looks very similar to Windows Live Mail, and lets you open emails in separate tabs, meaning that you can open multiple emails at the same time, and switch between them seamlessly. Thunderbird is available to download from the Mozilla site at https://www.mozilla.org/en-GB/thunderbird.
Depending on your email provider, you do always have the option of using their own browser based email access, like Outlook.com for Microsoft Hotmail or Outlook emails. The downside of these are that you would only be able to access your emails online, rather than having a separate program to have them backed up. Don’t forget that you can always contact us for free impartial advice. Just give us a call at Hypersonic for hardware and software support, tuition, web design, data retrieval, commercial and home networking, all with an efficient and friendly service. Call Wayne or Gareth at Hypersonic IT 01489 582666. Email: wayne@hypersonic.co.uk.
2. eM Client eM Client is a full featured email client with a modern, yet simple user interface. It also offers calendar, contacts, chat and task integration. If you have ever used Outlook, you will notice quite a few similarities in how it looks and feels. The best thing about eM Client is that when you first launch it, it can migrate your email account straight out of Windows Live Mail, or any other email clients, with a single click. This makes switching from Windows Live Mail nice and easy! Just click on what you want to import, hit finish and job done! You can customise the colour scheme of eM Client, depending on your personal preference, for nostalgia go with Classic (it looks very similar to Windows Live Mail). The only downside to eM Client is that in the free version, you can only have up to 2 email accounts, however if you are after a simple move from Windows Live Mail, and have 1 or 2 accounts, we would definitely recommend giving this program a shot! eM Client is available to download here http://www.emclient.com.

Divorce... £500 + VAT * Of all the ups and downs life has to throw at us the breakdown of a relationship is one of the hardest to deal with. Whilst struggling to deal with the emotional fall out the harsh reality of considering the financial consequences is a huge burden but essential to resolve early on. When a marriage or relationship breaks down the parties have to divide between them the assets (or debts) they have accumulated. But what if they cannot agree - how can they avoid the trauma and expense of arguing the matter before a Court? First, nothing can be finalised without both parties making complete disclosure of their assets. Some people might not like this but there is no realistic alternative. Therefore, be prepared to produce copies of pay slips, bank statements, shares and building society accounts and anything else showing what money you have and where it is. It must be up to date. Secondly, remember that the children come first. They almost certainly did when you were together and that will not change just because you are now divorcing. The children will need somewhere to live. The parent they live with will need an income to provide for the children. Thirdly, get good legal advice early on from some one who is a specialist. In today’s world changes come about quickly and you need up to the minute expert advice. Perhaps you do not feel ready to take any action but need advice to understand exactly where you stand. We are good listeners and will give you balanced, considered advice to help you to have the confidence to make the decision which is right for you. Driver Belcher has a dedicated family law team with extensive experience of helping people to resolve the difficulties arising from the ending of a relationship. We are accredited specialist members of Resolution, which promotes a non-confrontational approach to resolving legal matters in a practical way. We will however ensure a firm and robust representation to fully protect your position should negotiations fail. Finance & Eric Robinson Solicitors Wins Conveyancing Legal Sevices Accolade
There was cause for celebration for one of the region’s largest legal property teams when Eric Robinson Solicitors was named ‘Conveyancing Firm of the Year for the South of England’ a t the Modern Law Conveyancing Awards 2017. Professionals from across the UK property industry gathered for a black tie ceremony at the stylish Rum Warehouse in Liverpool to celebrate their nominations for the annual Modern Law Conveyancing Awards.
‘Our evidence shows this is what our clients want and appreciate. Things change, move forward, so any conveyancing firm wanting to be part of the future cannot afford to ignore it. We have made the conscience effort to embrace technology, innovation and progress, so it feels really satisfying to win this particular award.’
From a shortlist of five specialist firms from across the South of England, a judging panel of experts chosen from across the property industry chose Eric Robinson Solicitors as winner of the category in recognition of its client service, commitment to staff of over 20 fee earners and members of the department’s support team, and innovation within the sector. ‘Of all the awards to win, I think this title best sums up what we have been working to achieve over the past twelve months,’ says Partner and Head of Conveyancing at Eric Robinson Solicitors, Paul Sams. ‘We strive to keep one step ahead of developments in the industry. We introduced a 24 hour, 7 days a week phone service a few years ago, then opened our offices at weekends and most recently caused a stir when we introduced a ’28 day guarantee’ earlier this year.’

Debby at ghd partnership Ltd advises on party wall matters Are you or your neighbour considering building an extension or doing any building works? Does the Party Wall etc. Act 1996 apply to you? Not many people are aware that the Act has been in place since 1st July 1997 and must always be considered prior to works starting on site. The Act requires Building Owners to serve Notices on their neighbours when: • Building on or up to a boundary line; • Carrying out works to a wall or structure built on the boundary line; • Excavating in close proximity to the neighbour’s property. The Party Wall Act sets down the rights & duties of owners undertaking such works and provides protection to both property owners. The Party Wall Surveyor’s duty is to examine the proposed works, ensure that they are properly designed and are executed in a manner which is not likely to cause damage to adjoining buildings or property. In the unlikely event damage does occur, the party wall surveyor will ensure that these are rectified. ghd partnership Ltd are happy to give free and impartial advice with respect to any proposed building works that you or your neighbour may be considering. We are members of the Faculty of Party Wall Surveyors and are qualified to help with party wall disputes. Please feel free to give Debby a call on 07909 695860.

Universal Marina, Crableck Lane, Sarisbury Green, SO31 7ZN. www.universalmarina.co.uk Reception – 01489 574272 Universal Marina is at the end of a tree lined track off Crableck Lane, a wonderful walk along the River just down from Sarisbury Green. With berthing and dry stacking for over 350 boats, we also offer boat lifting up to 75 tons and exceptional waterside services in partnership with Vortec Marine. The ethos of the marina is one of sustainability. At its centre the people at Universal Marina are bound by their passion for the water and work to create a vibrant dynamic leisure facility surrounded by 70 plus acres of tranquil natural habitat; a hidden gem. Universal Marina offers endless leisure possibilities to a wide variety of guests and clients, in the pursuit of an innovative and unique experience. On shore side we have ‘Bistro 8’ riverside restaurant, ‘Nature’s Quay’ wellness centre, ‘Man Over Board’ water sport activities, ‘Five Oaks Trout Fishery’ and the new Club House with a range of accommodation and hospitality, opening in November. The Universal Marina community includes over 35 tenants providing a variety of skills and services based in a wide range of offices, workshops and other commercial space. Our aim is to create a sustainable environment in which all of our clients enjoy excellent services in an inspiring and desirable setting. Here’s our latest news…
8 metre World Champions - Congratulations to the Universal Marina team! Avia Willment (Universal Marina Owner and MD) and her team proudly brought the World Championship Cup home from Hanko in Norway at the end of August. On ‘Miss U’, the team members were Avia at the helm, Rich Burlingham - trimmer, Neil Harrison – tactician, James Hemingway - bow, Marcel Herrera - pit and Ian Smyth - trimmer. Avia Willment said “I am tremendously proud of the crew. It has taken 17 years sailing these tricky metre boats both in the 6 metre and 8 metre class. The 8 metres were used as practise for the Americas Cup and were pre-war Olympic boats. So we feel we have worked our way through the fleet from the classics into the moderns. It just goes to show that persistence and hard graft wins!” This wonderful success story has an astonishing synergy with the ethos of teamwork and shared passion enjoyed working at Universal Marina. “Thank you team!” Avia Willment first started competing in the 8 metre international category back in 2000 in the classic division. ‘Miss U’ was launched in La Trinité, France in 2014. The 48 foot yacht is the only tandem keel boat in the fleet and was designed by Jacques Fauroux, built by Skeens in Gosport – the project manager and tactician being Neil Harrison. The yacht was finished on site at Universal Marina and prepared for the Norway World Championships by Ian Smyth at Liquid Marine who was also on the crew.

Richard Burlingham, General Manager at Universal Marina said ‘We are so proud to bring back the cup. We literally had a blast in Norway, as if winning wasn’t enough; we were delighted to compete against King Harold of Norway who had his 80th birthday celebration whilst we were there. Avia cheekily presented him with a bottle of the local ‘Isle of White Mermaid Gin’ as a memento of ‘Miss U’ – a state of the art and distinctive boat with a mermaid on her bow.’ ‘Miss U’ will race again in the 2019 8-Metre World Championships, to be held here at home in the Solent, so hopefully will have many supporters to cheer her on.
There’s something fishy going on at Universal Marina

Bicep curls – Start with feet shoulder width apart and toes pointing forward. Hold a weight plate at waist level. Curl the weight up, keeping your elbow still and tucked into your sides.
Average Geoff With Autumn arriving and winter on the horizon it can be all too easy to start skipping workouts and losing you focus on what you eat. We more often excuse ourselves from the hard work necessary with whispers of “It’s too dark” or “its far too cold”. This is when you need to draw on that motivation that got you started and get excited again. Do you want to keep the results you’ve worked so hard for or fritter it away with snooze buttons and multiple trips to the fridge? Like I’ve said before, get yourself some goals. At this time of year people focus on getting in shape for the Christmas party season and to look great for family gatherings. If that’s not your thing then I’ve got a great little tip that’s often glossed over or ignored....summer bodies are built in winter!!! Despite what you see on 6am infomercials or Facebook adverts, quick fixes do not, in fact fix anything. What you want will take time and it will take dedication so start now and rock up at summer looking like you’ve earnt it!! To warm you up in the chilly mornings to come I’ve got a heavenly baked oats recipe thats spot on to fuel up after a morning workout. This months workouts are both High Intensity Interval workouts and both are 3-5 rounds of 40 seconds work and 20 seconds rest (depending on your fitness level). Choose a weight that truly challenges you instead of letting you just go through the motions. If you don’t have a weight plate you can pretty much lift whatever you like...within reason, your dog may not be up for it! As always, head over to the following with any questions and to find mountains more workouts, recipes and fitness tips Instagram: @average.geoff Facebook & youtube: Search ‘Average Geoff’ Have a great day and get up get out and get it done!!

After steadily gaining traction on the high street in recent years, the upcoming season may well prove to be the best yet for affordable options in a diverse range of colours and tweaks - however, keep it classic with this trend. Stick to camel, grey and black for the most versatile options.
There are few things in a wardrobe that, come the cooler months, can be more satisfying than slipping on a well-fitting overcoat. Sharply tailored, fitted through the shoulders and hitting the middle of the thigh, a wellmade overcoat has the ability to elevate any outfit to a higher, more sartorially aware status. No longer just for businessmen, this classic style in wardrobe-staple black is an investment piece that will pay for itself time and time again in cost-per-wear. Seen on the A/W 2017 runways of designer-ofthe-moment Vetements, as well as Martine Rose and Balenciaga, overcoats have emerged in a big way as a serious contender for the
VETEMENTS AW17
This version by H&M is double-breasted for extra ease and ultimate comfort, even when unbuttoned. Slouchy enough to be superlouche, tailored enough to pair with a suit, it’ll take you from day to night, weekday to weekend, no changes necessary.
H&M, DOUBLE-BREASTED WOOL-MIX COAT, £79.99
MENSWEAR: PUFFED UP
BALENCIAGA AW17
The ultimate in comfort and practicality, puffer jackets have experienced, in recent years, a renaissance almost unheard of in fashion. Not a single show-goer would be seen without one oversized, fitted, with elongated sleeves, vested - whatever the variation, it’s easy to style and perfectly versatile. It’s unusual for such a utilitarian piece to be embraced so wholeheartedly by the fashion community, but, as we saw with trainers more than five years ago, it can prove highly successful. For men, this is an easy trend to work with. Simply

go with the most classic option available - slim fit, evenly padded, long-sleeved and zipped down the middle. In a neutral shade, not only does it provide warmth and comfort to a far greater degree than it’s slim size would betray, it makes for the ideal layering option once the truly cold months set in. Worn under a classic coat when it’s freezing, or on its own when you have only a slight chill to combat, it’ll be your mostworn piece from October to February. This version from Zara is the perfect example - light enough to avoid over-heating, yet cosy enough to hunker down in.
WOMENSWEAR: RED HOT
EMPORIO ARMANI AW17
When it comes to choosing a new coat, there can be a fine line between basing your decision on style, and basing it on practicality. We all need something we can wrap up in; a well-stitched blanket to cover and protect us on our morning commute to work, or for lazy Sunday walks through town. But isn’t it tiring to see the same old drudgery passing us by - muted tones of grey, once ‘pastel’ pink that has now, in fact, turned to grey, a dubious camel colour that has with the abuse of time, you guessed it, become faded and grey? Stand out from the crowd, and break up with boring.
2017 collection - so too did Valentino, Chloé and Giambattista Valli - and as an edgier alternative to the muted pinks and purples that usually dominant winter store racks, it works beautifully. Around Autumn, it feels fresh, seasonal and looks perfect paired with a neutral-toned outfit underneath, then when Winter comes around, you have an everyday dose of festivity to get you through the darkening days. This version from M&S is beautifully constructed, and it’s classic shape off-sets the vibrant colour to bring things down to earth.
Emporio Armani chose an electrifying red as the anchor of their Autumn Winter
M&S, Wool Blend Coat, £119.99
WOMENSWEAR: TEDDY BEAR For high-street lovers, the great news is that quite literally every conceivable option can be found with some careful sleuthing, usually for under £100. Topshop is one of the best outlets for this trend consider the borg cocoon coat, in a neutral cream shearling style. Whilst it’s easy to be drawn into candycolours and exaggerated sizes, sticking with natural tones opens up endless opportunity to mix print and colour into the rest of your outfit. So pull it on, snuggle up and warm yourself thoroughly whilst enjoying one of the key trends of the season - just try to refraim from drifting off. TIBI AW17
Teddy bear coats have been circling the style zeitgeist for a couple of years now. Popularised by fashion bloggers, stylists and models due to the vast range available on the high street and their super-luxe appearance, they’ve proved a sticking trend over several fashion seasons. For the Autumn/Winter 2017 catwalks, designers such as Tibi, Marni, Miu Miu and Nina Ricci sent varying degrees of fluffiness down the runway. Models such as Bella Hadid and Kendall Jenner have also shown their affection for this super-comfy coat style, ideal for keeping warm whilst dashing between shows during the freezing New York Fashion Week climate.

Autumn Fruit Pie Ingredients 800g (1 3/4lb) cooking apples, such as Bramley 1 tbsp lemon juice 100g (3 1/2oz) caster sugar 2 tbsp cornflour tsp ground cinnamon 225g (8oz) blackberries fresh cream, custard or vanilla ice cream, to serve
Pastry 360g (12oz) plain flour, plus extra for dusting 185g (6oz) cold butter, cut into small cubes about 2 tbsp milk, to glaze 2 tsp caster sugar, to glaze
Method Make the pastry: put the flour in a large bowl with the butter. Rub together with your fingertips until you have incorporated all the butter. Add about 6 tablespoons of cold water until the mixture holds together. Gently gather up, then pat into a ball. Wrap in clingfilm and refrigerate for 30 minutes. Cut off just over half the pastry and leave the rest wrapped. Lightly flour the work surface and rolling pin. Roll out the pastry into a circle about 35cm (14in) across. (See below, Make a light pastry crust.) Carefully line the pie tin with the pastry. (See below, Line the tin without stretching.) Place a baking sheet in the oven and preheat the oven to 220째C (200째C fan/425째F/gas 7). Quarter, peel and core the apples, then cut them into slices about 5mm (1/4 in) thick. Put them in a large bowl and toss with the lemon juice. Mix the sugar with the cornflour and cinnamon in a bowl, then toss with the apples. Tip in the blackberries and briefly toss everything together. Be gentle when tossing, or the fruit will break up. Tip the fruit into the pastrylined tin. Roll out the remaining pastry and cut into long strips, to make the lattice its a simple up and under (look at the picture for details) Put the pie tin on preheated baking sheet and bake for 15 mins then reduce the temperature to 180째C/gas mark 4 and bake for a further 35/40 mins, remove the pie and let it sit for 5/10 mins to allow the juices to settle. Blue Abyss are set to be the World’s largest diving pool and private astronaut training facility in the UK and on the night they gave a brief overview of how humankind has always striven to explore, firstly here on Earth and in our oceans, and more lately into outer space. They highlighted that the more we strive to explore space, the more we benefit from exploring our oceans and generated a lot of interest from visitors to the museum.

Locks Heath Rotarian Chris Milburn invited the club members to visit the Titchfield Festival Theatre (TFT) where they could see the restoration of a special piece of musical history for the South of England, an original Compton organ that he and some colleagues were installing at the Titchfield Festival Theatre (TFT). The Compton theatre organ was first used in the Forum Theatre in Southampton in the 1930’s, and was heard entertaining the troops during WWII. It was used there until the 1970’s when it was removed and lived in a private house until 2013. Thanks to theatre organ enthusiasts, including Rotarian Chris Milburn, this fabulous musical instrument was bought back from East Anglia and is now being restored and rebuilt in the theatre. Taking time, money and love, it is expected that this multifaceted, magical and LOUD organ will be fully restored within the next few months and supporting the theatre in its programme of entertainment. Rotarians were treated to some amazing music from the nearly finished organ before transferring to the Titchfield Tithe Barn for a BBQ and fellowship.

Cinema organist Bernard Tilley found this amazing Compton built, special edition organ in Suffolk. He joined forces with Chris Milburn and Lyndon Ford from the theatre they were determined to, “Bring it Home”!! Bernard felt really strongly about saving this organ and so it was put into storage until such times as he could find people as enthusiastic as he about this wonderful organ. In January 2017 the organ in thousands of pieces was moved to The Titchfield Theatre following completion of a new floor. The theatre Director Kevin Frasier has been incredibly supportive and could see that this organ would be a fabulous asset to the theatre and its audiences for a very long time to come.
Let’s create you a bespoke bedroom to suit your home, taste and budget.
On the 5th March the team, without any documentation or instructions started building the main chamber and on the 1st July the organ was playable. Bernard said “Rotarian Chris is unbelievable”, (Well we know that). “He has achieved the impossible.” There is still a long way to go, and more funds are required, but the console is looking great and thanks to Ryan a junior member of the TFT team the illuminations work and change colour just like they are supposed to.

Birds of Hamble Common Hamble Common is 55 acres of coastal heath owned and managed by Eastleigh Borough Council and assigned Special Scientific Interest because of its wide range of habitats. It is the main focus for the Hamble Conservation Volunteers and for those who have not heard of the Common before, it is a downward pointing triangular shaped area bounded by Southampton Water and the River Hamble. This is the penultimate article of a series in which we describe the resident and visiting birds that depend on the unusual habitat provided by the Common.
at various points around the Common before continuing their journey south. Dartford warblers take up temporary residence again on the common amongst the gorse, hunting spiders and insects as they disperse from their breeding grounds on the heaths of the New Forest.
Teal - Andrew Walmsley
Late autumn is the best chance to see large mixed flocks of goldfinches and greenfinches near the shore line. Small flocks of meadow pipits arrive and if you are lucky you may witness an evening departure of hundreds of pied wagtails that have congregated near the Hamble Point Marina to hop across
Birdlife in the Autumn Autumn sees the passage of birds that have spent the summer elsewhere, but fly to the coast to find a point to hop across the English Channel. A handful of wheatears, bold distinct little birds, can be seen at this time of year as they move south and stop off
Wheatear – Andrew Walmsley
Southampton Water to Fawley Oil Refinery to roost for the night. Also along the foreshore look up for passing swallows and house martins following the shoreline of Southampton Water and beyond, until they take the plunge and head off across the Channel. There is something quite stirring about watching these small birds heading out to sea heading ultimately for Africa. Late autumn starts to see curlews and oystercatchers drifting back to the foreshore from their breeding grounds inland to re-join the nonbreeding birds that have stayed through the summer. At this time of year there is also a chance of seeing a peregrine falcon patrolling the shoreline of Southampton Water for a hunting opportunity. A quiet wait at the edge of the creek at low tide may throw up some rarer visitors in the form of a kingfisher, greenshank or green sandpiper as well as the first returning black-tailed godwits feeding in the silt at low tide. When the tide is turning little egrets can often be seen hunting the large numbers of small fish that follow the tide in and out of the creek. At high tide you may see little grebes fishing further out and the islands at the mouth of the creek harbour roosting waders such as lapwings, oystercatchers and grey plovers. This is the time of year when looking out from Hamble Point towards the spit at low tide you may be rewarded with the sight of a small flock of visiting avocets.

The common is now full of life especially insect life. There is a chance to see kestrels hunting across the common during the day and in late evening time in the wooded fringes you may happen upon a Tawny owl or more probably hear the classic twit twoo call. Most of you will know that this is a two bird call with the female owl calling and the male owl responding.
Once the common starts to bring on the warm autumn hues it produces blackberries, seeds and acorns before becoming a little more desolate in deepest winter. For such a small patch of countryside surrounded by built up areas, the Common supports a multitude of plants, animals and birds and can still at times feel quite rural with good views onto the Hamble river and Southampton Water. On clear days there are vistas of beautiful sun rises and sunsets year round over water.
Hamble Conservation Volunteers We are the Hamble Conservation Volunteers, a group of local enthusiasts committed to preserving the habitat and amenity of Hamble Common for the benefit of the community and wildlife. We assist Eastleigh Borough Council by providing support for a variety of activities. The scrub clearance that takes place on the Common each winter is essential for the retention of its keystone heathland habitat particularly the small but significant areas of bell heather. This autumn scrub clearance will be crucial because cattle have not grazed during the summer and the scrub has enjoyed unrestrained growth. We also provide a large number of bird boxes that protect our birds during the nesting season from predators such as grey squirrels, magpies and woodpeckers. More mundane but no less essential for the safety of wildlife, dogs and children are our twice monthly beach cleans, it is disappointing that these are necessary but the quantity of rubbish left during a year fills over 300 black refuse bags.
Can you help? Most of our tasks are manually intensive and there is no substitute for numbers but there are roles for almost all agility levels. Whether you are an individual or a company looking for a rewarding project for your Corporate Responsibility programme, we are keen to hear from you. If you are interested in joining us please take a look at our website: www.hamble-conservation.co.uk/common.html

Autumn gardening Jobs to do in October/November – By @blakes_garden
It is essential this time of year to prepare for winter frosts, tender plants need protection at the first sign of frost usually between September and November. In autumn tender plants should be cut back and mulched over with some organic matter, or lifted out of the ground and stored over winter. This decision should be made based on the local climate and the plant itself. Luckily for us southerners! In milder areas of the UK and in sheltered well drained areas of a garden it could be possible to simply cut back the tops of tender plants and leave them In the ground covering them over with a mulch, however in exposed and cold areas even the hardy perennials may need a heavy mulch over winter. Plants such as tender cannas, dahlias, gladioli, and tuberous begonias have rhizomes, tubers or corms that can survive over winter in a dormant state if stored correctly. To avoid frost damage, find a cool dark location and dry off the tubers and leave them there until spring. The same principle can be applied to tender perennials too, however to protect these, lift and pot them from the ground and store in a sheltered location. Lift and pot up tender perennials, such as chocolate cosmos, pelargoniums (most commonly known as geraniums), gazanias and coleus, put them in your greenhouse to protect them over winter. Alongside protecting the tender plants, why not get your green fingers out and plant some informal waves of spring bulbs in a lawn? For early spring colour you include daffodils, crocuses, and snake’s-head fritillaries. Apart from looking good they are a nifty indicator that the gardening season has started. If you wanted to get some colour into your garden now and over the winter season, you can plant up a colourful pot display with plants such as winter pansies, heathers, cyclamen and skimmia’s. Now is also a brilliant time to plant conifer hedges and evergreen shrubs whilst the soil is still warm.
DID YOU KNOW? SPRING BULBS: Daffodils contain galantamine and can be extracted for use in the treatment of the early stage of Alzheimer’s disease and Saffron is

Preparing for next year there are other jobs to be done in the garden in autumn. Such as taking cuttings of shrub herbs like lemon verbena which is popular in deserts, and rosemary and thyme in October. Hardwood cuttings from healthy fruit bushes including gooseberries, currants and blueberries in November. Cover salad plants with frost protective fleece to prolong the crop and sow batches of hardy peas and broad beans outdoors for early crops next year.
Do you happen to have a fig tree? With large fruits that have failed to ripen? Take them off and leave the smaller pea sized fruits to develop ready for harvesting next year. And don’t forget to mulch the flower beds with manure, clean out the greenhouse, removing the debris from within can prevent overwintering pests and diseases to develop, and wash the glazing to allow for more autumn daylight to enter as each UV

ray counts! After that insulate the greenhouse roof and walls with bubble polythene (bubble wrap) and bring the tropical plants like bananas, amaryllis, potted fuchsias and citrus plants in, keeping them frost free and cool over winter. If you have finished those jobs, you could always rake the lawn, driveways and paths or your borders and collect up all of the fallen leaves, if you store them in some gardening bin bags, these will rot down into leaf mould which is great to mix into the soil next year. Apply autumn lawn feed to revive the grass after the rigours of the summer season and check your shed is waterproof and secure and for the winter, clean and store your tools and patio furniture in it.
will be having a bonfire, remember to check your bonfires carefully before lighting them up as hedgehogs or other wildlife may have snuck in when your back was turned in seek of shelter. I think that is enough to be getting on with until winter arrives, take a moment to find me on Instagram @blakes_garden and sit back and enjoy the spectacular autumn display!
While you are cracking on with the jobs and as the cold encroaches, wildlife will be finding shelter to have a cosy winter too. Give wildlife a home or hotel by building a log pile in a corner or at the back of a border. They will thank you for it by naturally cleaning up the bits you missed! If you

Dig Day Keen volunteers braved the winter weather to help tidy the Environmental Area at Hook-with-Warsash C of E Academy. All the budding helpers were kept busy by cutting back trees, clearing paths and trimming hedges.
The Environmental Area at the school has a pond, willow tunnel, sensory garden and woodland. The area allows pupils at the school to study pond life and compare different habitats within the school grounds. The garden is maintained by volunteers including parents, pupils, teachers and even grandparents. The school allows the local community to use the area and is regularly visited by local pre-schools and other groups such as Brownies and cubs. Pupils at the school enjoy the chance for Welly Walks in the grounds during which they spend time exploring the area and learning in the outdoors whatever the weather! Hook-with-Warsash C of E Academy would like to thank all the helpers who came on the day and gave up part of their weekend to make a big difference to the school. We would also like to thank the school’s dedicated PTFA who provided delicious homemade food to keep the volunteers refreshed. If you are part of a local group and would like to use the area please feel free to contact the school on 01489 572393.
