Transform your kitchen in days at under half the cost of a new kitchen We are now taking bookings for January 2018 and places are filling up fast. Treat yourself to a new kitchen this Christmas and receive excellent discounts when you wrap up your order before the end of 2017.

We Bring the Showroom to You Kitchen pictured above:

“We had just moved and wanted to update and bring colour and a contemporary feel into our existing kitchen but wanted to avoid the large Corporate Companies. We found the answer in Happy Kitchens when Ben brought his showroom to us, and the experience of choosing units and colours turned out to be an exciting one, rather than daunting and disappointing. When it came to installation, the team of fitters including Martin, James and Mitch were spot-on with their time keeping, efficiency and workmanship. We were consulted where decisions mattered and nothing seemed too much trouble. We are both thrilled with our kitchen and can’t believe the transformation. Post customer service is as important and they can’t be faulted. They even returned to check all the units a week later for any ‘tweaks’. A happy team, led by Ben and we would 100% recommend them. They deserve to do well. Thank you” – Jane Wareham

Christmas Legends Do you know that many Christmas traditions have pagan origins very strongly of linked to nature and our Est. 45 years landscape? The Pagan winter solstice goes back thousands of years when evergreen trees were brought into the home and decorated with wax candles to create light symbolizing the sun, moon and stars. Called Yule trees and along with the simple decorations of holly and candles, this festival marked the darkest days of winter. Interestingly, and also linked with nature, another legend associated with the winter solstice is that of the annual ‘battle of the Oak and Holly Kings ‘where the Oak King overcomes the Holly King to reign until the summer solstice.

Titchfield

The Show Begins So the event of the Christmas tree as we know it today evolved slowly over the centuries. The first known Christmas tree went up in the UK at Windsor Castle in 1800. Small wax candles, apples, nuts, dates, sweets and coloured paper flowers decorated and added light to the branches.

Themed Christmas Trees

It was an associate inventor of Edison’s who created the first set of electrical Christmas lights and in 1890, the Edison company published a brochure offering lighting services for Christmas. By 1900, commercial premises were beginning to string up lights in their shop windows. An Edison advert at that time offered bulbs, which you could rent, along with their lighting system for use over the festive season.

Seasonal décor is becoming increasingly sophisticated and it is on-trend to have trees dressed not only singular colours or a maximum of two colours, but also as a theme. There are decorations and baubles that symbolise style, humour, vintage items, toys and animals. We can now have trees to keep both the adults and the children happy! We can recreate the atmosphere of a white Christmas with a silver and white tree or amuse the children with a red and green tree decorated with imps and elves! Or indulge in some nostalgia from a more recent bygone age and make a vintage tree adorned with the bright ornaments and tinsel of four decades ago.

Fairy Lights Small Christmas lights only became known as fairy lights after the light opera company D’Oyle Carte in 1882 used tiny incandescent lights in the hair of their players in a comic production about an immortal band of fairies. However, it would be another century before fairy lights came into more general use because until the mid 1950’s most households, either did not have electricity or could not afford it. This meant that until this time, it was still very popular to use candles to light up Christmas trees.

White Christmas In recent years, it is rare that we see a white Christmas. It was the Victorians who first used illustrated snow scenes at Christmas. Not least because of Charles Dickens timely story ‘A Christmas Carol’. Also, Britain was still in the middle of a mini ice age with many of the Victorian winters seeing substantial snowfall. In 1836 on the 25th December, snow depths reached 15 feet with drifts of up to 50 feet!

Inspired by Nature It seems current festive trends reflect a strong demand for man made decorations and artificial trees, which are very difficult to tell from the real thing. Yet, the simplicity and special touch of nature still inspires us. So we use a combination of both contemporary decorations and foliage we can gather from our gardens and the landscape. Holly and ivy to drape over mantelpieces, wreaths of evergreen branches to adorn doors and casual bunches of mistletoe to hang in halls. It seems, in the midst of the winter solstice, we still have a hankering to return to the ancient world of nature, which of course, was the very reason, so long ago, those pagan and mid winter, traditions first began. NEW Complimentary therapies NOW available at Veterinary Surgery Heathside Veterinary Surgery in Locksheath has been offering clients a holistic approach to pain management for their pets which has proven to be an often-effective part of the management of painful conditions such as osteoarthritis, spondylosis, hip and elbow dysplasia and following acute injuries, orthopaedic and soft tissue surgeries. Myotherapy: Sarah Curtis, RVN a Registered Galen Myotherapist uses deep massage techniques and manipulations to relieve muscular tension, a common consequence of postural and loading changes when an animal suffers from sore or painful joints “When our pets have sore joints, they change the way in which they stand and move and will recruit other muscles and joints to compensate. Over time, these recruited muscles become tense and painful too and will have a massive impact on a pet’s ability to function and exercise. Myotherapy will ease tension, reduce inflammation and pain and will quite often improve joint range of motion as muscles crossing a joint become more flexible. The majority of pets undergoing myotherapy treatment really enjoy the experience and owners will also learn some of the techniques to use at home to maintain the improvements”

She also uses myotherapy in patients recovering from orthopaedic surgery, on sporting dogs to improve their muscular health and fitness and those suffering from repetitive strain or acute muscular injuries. K-Laser therapy: This provides drug-free pain relief for joint and soft tissue conditions such as osteoarthritis, hip dysplasia, strains and sprains, spondylosis, gingivitis, otitis externa and will hasten the healing time of wounds. Laser therapy uses a specific wavelength of light which has a therapeutic effect on damaged cells. It increases cell metabolism by improving the transport of nutrients across the cell membrane and waste products away therefore creating an optimum environment for healing, reducing inflammation, stiffness and pain. “Pets tolerate this really well as no sedation or restraint is required and each treatment lasts around 3-10 minutes. All they have to do is sit still whilst the laser is focused on the target area, biscuits or stuffed kongs help to make the experience enjoyable!” If you wish to have further information, please do not hesitate to contact Danielle Giles: dgiles29@googlemail.com or the surgery 01489 607001

Polar Bear Necessities Each year, in the fall, on the west shore of Canada’s Hudson Bay, Polar Bears gather along the shore on the outskirts of Churchill, waiting for the bay to freeze in order to begin the annual hunt for seals. This makes Churchill the self-proclaimed “Polar Bear Capital of the World”. Every fall you can expect in the vicinity of nearly 1,000 bears to pass through Churchill. The annual Polar bear trek to Hudson Bay provides a fantastic opportunity to see these magnificent animals. Amity World Travel offer tours that range from one to seven days in length that can easily be bolted on to a tour of the Canadian Rockies/ Alaskan Cruise, etc or work as a stand-alone holiday. The only way to reach this remote settlement is by plane or a 40-hour train journey from Winnipeg – our recommended option is to fly from Winnipeg and spend 3 or 4 nights in Churchill, this will allow for 2 full days spent viewing the bears.

Your two days of Polar Bear viewing will be spent in the Tundra Buggy; Tundra Buggy’s can only be described as a portacabin on oversized wheels. However they are without doubt the most comfortable and safe way to experience the bears in their natural environment. The Buggy will follow a system of established trails,

12 | The LOOP

contactus@loopmagazine.net

stopping at leisure to enjoy the scenery. Meandering across the cold landscape in the morning light, the tundra looks a bleak, unforgiving wilderness, with low, battered willow bushes dusted with snow, frozen pools, tidal flats and the odd spruce. Despite the bleakness the sage green and pale turquoise tints of the ice have a peculiar beauty about them, contrasting with the golden brown leaves clinging to the trees and the red and yellow ochres of lace-like lichens on the scattered rocks. As you weave your way towards Hudson Bay there is a good chance that you will catch the unmistakable outline of the bears plodding along the horizon, their coats honey-coloured against the pure white of the snow. Upon reaching the shores of Hudson Bay you can expect to find an abundance of polar bears, the majority will carry on with their daily life, as if you are not there. Curiosity will get the better of some and you can expect male bears to approach the buggy, puling themselves up against the side to do a spot of people watching, whilst the mothers will just lay close by with their young in tow. With the opportunity to take photos from the observation deck to the rear of the buggy and a highly knowledgeable guide to keep you informed on all that is going on around, you will find the day soon passes and before you know it you will be heading back to town. The Polar Bears of Churchill are undoubtedly a holiday experience that will live long in the memory, with a choice of tour operators offering an array of options from Adventure tours to the more luxurious and inclusive; it makes sense to speak to Amity World Travel first. Their experienced staff will be able to steer you through the myriad of choices and take the strain out of tying it all together with any plans you may have for before and after your time in Churchill. The season is short as the bears will be off as soon as the sea ice has formed, which is usually by mid-November, with the high demand to witness this annual migration, early booking is highly recommended.

Locksheath Pumas Most people don’t know but Locks Heath Pumas Rugby Club has been in existence and playing competitive rugby for coming up to 20 years. The objective for the Pumas is to be a Community based club offering Rugby Union for all that wish to play it. The Pumas continue to grow in strength and now offer 2 men’s teams playing competitive rugby in Hampshire 2 for their 1XV and Solent Merit League 3 for RUFC their 2XV. Club Chairman George Winch says “in the last 8 months we have capitalised on all the new housing projects being developed in and around the Locks Heath area and the general mood in how England Rugby for both men and women is being viewed. Rugby is a popular sport and people want to play and see entertaining rugby. Our recruitment drive last summer saw us capture 26 new members and get 7 former players back to the club”.

LocksheatH

PUMAS

The senior club has started the season well with the 1XV looking to achieve promotion to Hampshire 1. This is partly due to the fact during the summer the Pumas asked their current Director of Rugby Alan Palmer to undertake a Head Coach role. Alan then quickly set about appointing up a coaching team consisting of current and ex Pumas. Alan says “one of the biggest issues was to get our coaches to understand the challenges we face in terms of what facilities we have and can utilise. Who better to understand these than current and former players. Our new coaches are very innovative and drew up a programme based upon what we can achieve in terms of fitness and skills but above all keep it fresh and entertaining for the players. This is a talented group of players who are ambitious and play with great character throughout the teams”. As well as senior rugby the Pumas have recently launched a Mini/ Junior club aptly called the Locks Heath Puma Cubs. The Puma Cubs offers age grade rugby to children aged between 5 – Under 12. Winch continues “it has always been a dream of ours to start developing the rugby players of tomorrow by offering fun rugby sessions for children. The government and Council set a lot of targets re our children having a range of physical exercise and many schools concentrate on football and cricket as the 2 major sports. So we are working with several schools to add this as an extra activity on Sunday mornings. Not all children want to play football and they love the fun, discipline and meeting new friends involved in the sport. As it is our first attempt at this I decided to only limit the Puma Cubs to a certain age range but

16 | The LOOP

contactus@loopmagazine.net

the demand from parents has been phenomenal. We ran a few taster sessions in the summer and have over 100 children already registered which has created a logistical challenge in getting enough coaches qualified to help run the sessions”. To help run the Puma Cubs a new Youth Committee was formed consisting of parents and senior club advisors. The Puma Cubs Chairman is parent Richard Hadley. Richard says, “the new Youth Committee are there to help manage the safety and wellbeing aspects of all the children. England Rugby have clear guidelines on how we should operate a mini and junior section to the Club and we are continually assessing and talking to other local clubs as to the areas to avoid any challenges we need to overcome. The community rugby spirit has really pulled together to help us. We have spoken to local schools and made an arrangement with Hook with Warsash school in allowing us to use their pitch area on Sundays. Here we have a safe environment with toilet and shelter facilities should the heavens open.” If wish to get your child involved please mail Richard Hadley pumacubsrugby@gmail.com or visit our website www.locksheathpumas.com As well as the Mini and Junior section the Pumas now have 83 senior playing members which has given them another headache in where can they get a facility to bring all this activity together. They train at several locations, play their matches at Brookfield Community school and socialise at Abshot Community Centre. Winch says “for the last 3 years we have been requesting that

the council offer us an area within the Western Wards which we can develop out as a club facility for rugby to benefit all the community. The demand is here and now as we continue to grow. Any piece of land where we can build pitches and a clubhouse would be ideal. Our objective is to bring both the Pumas and the Puma Cubs together and create an environment for all wishing to play the sport to have fun and be safe. If there are any landowners or developers who are able to help us do this I would love to talk to them.”

The Pumas aim is to keep looking for a permanent home and keep encouraging people to play the sport. If wish to play, help us in our quest for a ground or just like information to be a sponsor or support the club, it would be great to hear from you. Kindly reach out to George Winch chairman@locksheathpumas.com. The Pumas are dedicated to “bringing rugby to the community and the community to rugby”. Come and join us. contactus@loopmagazine.net

By @blakes_garden Before I start with some seeds you can plant this time of the year, it is important to label every seed row that you sow, it can get disorganised really quickly if you do not know what the youngling seed sprouts are when they erupt from the soil. To dive straight in, plants like antirrhinum (snapdragon) or laurentia (isotoma) for container plants need a long growth period before flowering, December and January is the perfect time to sow antirrhinum seeds in a propagator or cool greenhouse for good results. Sowing indoors there are some plants also to consider for 2018 flower season, begonias, geranium (pelargonium) and dianthus (carnations), to add lobelia for Cyclamen in the woods containers, hanging baskets and bedding. Sweet peas can be Started off indoors now too in gentle heat and pansies for a colourful summer display, why not sow a bird of paradise seed for something more exotic?

January is great to start sowing celery in a heated propagators. If you are thinking of entering any shows or competitions, kick start your celeriac and celery now. Sow exhibition onion seeds to give the onion time to grow as big as possible, varieties such as Alias Craig and Bunton’s showstopper won’t disappoint. Now is the time to think also about your rhubarb, they are hungry eaters so December is a good time to plant with plenty of organic matter, order crowns in January to plant in contactus@loopmagazine.net

spring or sow some seeds in a heated propagator to give them the best start. Salad leaves and spinach can be grown on a bright windowsill indoors, put a few potatoes next to the salad to start them chitting (sprouting) for some summer first early potatoes. For an early summer crop grow and plant strawberry plants undercover now, in a cold frame or under cloches for some sweet summer berries. Sow hardy broad beans outdoors if the ground isn’t frozen. It’s surprisingly easy to grow your own mushrooms too this time of the year. Try growing a mushroom log in your garden, Bird of Paradise alternatively mushroom kits are cheap and easy to grow some amazing varieties indoors. Blackberries and raspberry canes can be planted anytime from now until spring. Plant gooseberries and currants now and blueberries in acid soil. Finally for optimum cyclamen growth they can be planted now until March as they prefer cooler temperatures, they will give a spectacular red white Cyclamen and pink display next year. Did you know? Celery or Apium graveolens, is a vegetable with many benefits as it is an excellent source of antioxidants and beneficial enzymes, in addition to vitamins and minerals such as vitamin K, vitamin C, potassium, folate and vitamin B6.

Average Geoff With the cold months well and truly on us it can be tough to stay motivated and driven to get out of bed or get up off the sofa and work out. Sometimes the cold and dark weather can grind us down and make it easy for little excuses to creep in whilst we allow ourselves to be a bit lazy.

Maybe you wake up and your life isn’t quite where you want it to be. Perhaps you’ve not lost the weight you wanted to, you’re not as strong as you want to be or you something just isn’t how you want it to be. There’s your motivation to get out of bed and do the necessary to change what you don’t like and make it happen. Life happens and events occur that are out of our control. But you and only you can control how you react to those events and how you’re going to move forward and grow. I’m going to leave you with a task. If you’re going to make any new years resolutions then I want you to write it down and put it somewhere you’ll see it every day to keep you checked in and give you the best chance of success. If all else fails, remember this well used fitness quote - “Summer bodies are built in winter.” Stay strong and focused and I’ll see you all in the new year.

Low Fat Cheesecake

Base

(Makes 2) Whoop!!! Get stuck in to a weekend treat without the guilt with these crazy low fat cheesecakes. The actual cheese bit is made with quark, a cream cheese made with skimmed milk so its 0% fat!!! On it’s own I find quark just tastes like...white! However, mix it up with some blueberries and you’ve got some serious dessert gains!!

1/4 cup oats

2

1/4 cup dates 1/4 cup hazelnuts

The Cream Cheese 1/4 cup blueberries + extra for topping 3/4 cup of quark 1 tbsp honey

Method Soak the hazelnuts and dates in water for at least 4 hours, drain and shove it in a processor with the oats. Blitz until you get a chunky base. Press it into 2 egg poaching rings and sit on some parchment paper on a baking tray. Now get the blueberries into a pan and gently heat whilst smooshing with a fork until it turns to liquid. Allow it to cool slightly and then put it through a sieve to get all the lovely smooth juices into the quark.(You can just fling them in but it won’t be as smooth) Add in the honey and mix well. Spread it on top of the 2 bases and level out. Top with the extra blueberries and get them in the freezer for at least an hour. When you want them, poke them gently out of the ring from the bottom and leave to soften slightly for about 20-30 minutes. contactus@loopmagazine.net

Beating the winter blues This is the first of what we hope will be many bi monthly columns written by Liz and Hazel; we are two registered nurses with over half a century of combined nursing experience working for the both the public and private sector in the UK and abroad. We are now entrepreneurs with a flourishing consultancy and care company within the local area, ensuring the health, wellbeing and dignity of our clients enabling them to remain at home. Once more with the clocks going back the days are now shorter and the long dark evenings are looming. For us, a favourite time of year; the result of happy childhood memories of conkers and the vibrant colours of autumn. However, for some, this time of year is dreaded as one can become socially isolated. Isolation isn’t age specific and can apply to any of us with a long-term health condition, those with a physical or learning disability as well as the elderly and frail. The fear of slipping on wet leaves or ice or the sheer effort of getting wrapped up warm to go out can put people off. Some people choose to be alone but for many this isn’t the case. In the 21st Century, times have changed. Families are friends are now much more likely to be far flung than ever before which exacerbates the feelings of isolation, and new rapidly changing technology is needed to help us maintain those ties and bonds

How can we as a community help reduce the loneliness and isolation? • Please do be aware of your neighbours particularly if elderly, or have a known disability. • Are their curtains being drawn in the mornings? • Is their milk being taken off the doorstep, the newspaper and mail from the letterbox? • Are they out and about or receiving visitors? Don’t be afraid to knock on the door for a quick chat to reassure you both that they are not alone… You are both likely to feel really good after doing so. • Offer to take them out for a coffee and shopping • If the weather is very cold or wet, are they warm enough? Equally in the hot weather are they drinking enough?

What can we do for ourselves? • Embrace new technology! Ask for a tablet or laptop for Christmas, (second hand are easily available) and ask a young person to teach you the basics or find a local computer club. If nothing else, this will enable you to see your family or friends when you talk to them… so much better than just a phone call!

• ‘Don’t sweat the small stuff’ Some things simply not worth fretting about. • Play your favourite CD, sing along to your favourite artist. • Move around as much as you are able. • Take up a new challenge, join a new group • Volunteer at the local primary school; Children make us smile every day. • Arrange events to look forward to and get excited about: These brighten our days • Take responsibility for yourself and your own wellbeing: if you live alone, consider assistive technology; This will alert individuals of your choice that you have a problem, thus resolving it quickly. There are many additional services available now to reassure family members of those living alone: e.g. Pendant alarm; fall monitors; door sensors, temperature sensors are just a few. www.assistive-technology.co.uk is a site that can give you more information. • Planning ahead (for a time when you may not be so well and able to make decisions) means you remain in control of what happens to you and when. Discuss with your family and your GP. Write it down and put it somewhere safe. Let those who need to know, know. Thus giving you and all who care about you peace of mind.

It’s a Christmas knockout Personnel across HMS Collingwood came together recently for an afternoon of knockabout fun and games and to enter into the Christmas spirit at the annual It’s A Knockout tournament. The event kicked off in spectacular fashion as Santa, bearing a strong resemblance to Leading Physical Trainer (LPT) Jack Basher, sped into the Base’s Sports and Recreation Centre in his sleigh waving a bottle. Unsurprisingly, he lost control of his reindeer and crashed but officers from the Base’s Royal Navy Police (RNP) were quickly on the scene to handcuff him and take him away. Luckily they must have relented because he soon returned to lead nearly two hundred people in twenty teams around a series of festively-themed challenges.

Winchester’s residents help keep Air Ambulance flying Winchester residents have helped raise a staggering £24,000 for Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance, by using council clothing recycling points around the district to turn their unwanted clothing, shoes and textiles into cash. Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance provides exceptional prehospital critical care to those who need the highest level of urgent medical treatment, whenever they are in need and wherever they are. The charity rely on donations to keep the Air Ambulance in service. On 13 December 2017, Cllr Jan Warwick, the City Council’s Portfolio Holder for Environment presented a cheque for £24,000 to Dr David Sutton of Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance at the charity’s airbase in Thruxton. Cllr Warwick said: “By filling our textile banks, residents have been not only helping to reduce our waste and improve our recycling performance but are also supporting a really worthwhile cause. We are therefore thrilled to be handing over this cheque today thanks to the generosity of the people of Winchester. Our immense gratitude goes to all at Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance for their difficult but important work, which they carry out in the in the most challenging of circumstances.”

“Angry Elf” LH Toft sends a smiling challenger flying.

These challenges included carrying presents along an inflatable runway wearing a bungee harness, collecting items of clothing hampered by an angry elf (aka Leading Hand (LH) Toft) in a bouncy castle and Reindeer Rodeo. Less physical stances tested joke-telling skills in “Make Scrooge Laugh” and carol singing ability in “Serenading the Snow Queen” (Anne Cotter, Admin for the PT Department). The final challenge required each team to decorate a lucky crew member for Christmas. In all twenty differently themed challenges provided fun for the participants, many of whom joined the PTIs in donning fancy dress. Each team donated a chocolate Selection box as their entry fee with these being donated to the Children’s Ward at Queen Alexandra Hospital to spread a little festive cheer among the youngsters there. Christmas confectionary boxes were awarded to the winners of the competition, the Victory Squadron Staff, by HMS Collingwood’s Commanding Officer, Captain Rob Vitali, Royal Navy.

Capt Rob Vitali, RN with the winning team – the Victory Squadron staff.

The afternoon was organised by LPT Jack Basher who has only recently joined HMS Collingwood and this was his first major event. He said, “Newly joining HMS Collingwood from PT Course, it was a pleasure to organise the Christmas It’s a Knockout. As my first event, it was a fantastic competition with an outstanding turn out from the ship’s company. All personnel and myself enjoyed an afternoon of Christmas competitiveness and I look forward to organising similar events in the future.” 26 | The LOOP

Rachel Leaman, Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance Head of Income Generation added “It costs in excess of £9,000 a day to maintain our life-saving service and we can only do this thanks to the outstanding support that we receive from the communities that we serve. The generous donation of £24,000 from Winchester City Council will help us to continue our life-saving work.” To find out where your nearest textile recycling bank is visit: www.recyclenow.com/local-recycling. Tyrrells to be restaurant partner at NST City, Southampton Spencer Bowman, Founder and Managing Director of Mettricks Hospitality, said, “As we approach the launch of the most exciting cultural space to come to Southampton this century I am thrilled that Tyrrells has been chosen to be NST City’s restaurant partner, overlooking the stunning Guildhall Square. As a proudly local hospitality business with a real commitment to quality, hospitality and our city community, I feel a very real responsibility to live up to the famous Tyrrells name. We aspire to create one of our city’s landmark restaurants and bars befitting the location – as well as bringing Mettricks speciality coffee.”

Credit: Tyrrell & Green

Opened in 1897, Tyrrell and Green was one of Southampton’s most famous department store names renowned for its quality and service, with a proudly local Southampton twist. In 2018 the famous name will return to Southampton in an exciting new partnership between NST City and Mettricks. Reinterpreted but with the same devotement for quality and service, Tyrrells will bring the finest food, drink and coffee to the heart of Southampton’s new Cultural Quarter. The restaurant takes inspiration from the finest local food which will be served with the best hospitality. The bar will serve up beers from some of our city’s most exciting breweries alongside fine wines and crafted cocktails. The café will serve Mettricks coffee and the finest loose teas alongside home-made cakes, afternoon teas and light bites. All these facilities within a landmark building. Tyrrells will be open every day for you to enjoy the exceptional food while visiting the theatre. Tyrrells is looking forward to welcome all the visitors to Southampton, in February 2018.

Jay Geddes, Head Chef of Tyrrells, said, “I feel very privileged to be leading the food team as we launch Tyrrells. Having grown up locally I have a strong affinity with the city and I am passionate about bringing great food to the area. Dining is all about trust, the customer comes to us trusting we will give them an amazing experience. I take it very personally. Our aim is to give the most complete experience we can to each and every single person that we serve. At Tyrrells we will be using quality local produce, to create delicious dishes.” Sam Hodges, Director of Nuffield Southampton Theatres, said, “Reconnecting communities with the rich heritage of this city is very important to us as storytellers and theatre-makers. The launch of Tyrrells on the original site of one of Southampton’s landmark institutions from the past as part of what we hope will be one of its landmark institutions of the future feels absolutely right. We couldn’t be more delighted to be partnering with Spencer and his Mettricks group on this bold new venture.”

We have fitted all manner of adaptations in all manner of cars, from family saloons, small city cars, high end sports cars and even classic cars. We have a number of solutions available to view at our showroom/ workshop in Cadnam and would be more than happy to arrange a time for you to come and see them. We can direct you to various video clips of other adaptations and sometimes arrange for you to see them already fitted on other customers vehicles. As a small family run business we offer a personal service and our aim is always to work with our customers to achieve their goals.

There are hundreds of adaptations available to help make life a little easier. They mainly fall into three categories:

Assistance to drive The most common adaptations within this category are hand controls and steering wheel aids, however there are numerous other adaptations that can help keep you mobile for longer. For example, easy release handbrakes, folding accelerator pedals and pedal guards.

Assistance getting in and out of the vehicle This section covers transfer plates, swivel seats and person lifts, but simple items such as swivel cushions and handibars should not be underestimated.

Stowing and transporting of wheelchairs or scooters Boot hoists enable you to transport not only yourself but your wheelchair or scooter. People are often surprised by the vehicles that hoists can be fitted in. The main consideration for a hoist is the height of the item that it is to lift and the maximum opening of the vehicle’s boot. This is something we are happy to measure up and advise on. In addition to hoists there are platform lifts and chairtoppers.

The Trend Edit

Inspired by the everlasting cool of French chic, these four runway-approved trends hand-picked by Thomas Marrington will carry you through Winter in true Parisian style.

A VELVET DREAM

As we find ourselves in party season, the time has come once again to invest in an outfit that will carry us through multiple parties without breaking the bank. For those on a budget, this excellent fitted velvet dress by H&M is an absolute steal at £9.99, and a very festive berry red to boot. Paired with chic black ankle boots, undone hair and a carefree attitude, be the epitome of Parisian chic at every office party, family gathering and New Year’s celebration this December.

H&M, FITTED VELVET DRESS, £9.99

A FAUX FUR FANTASY

MICHAEL KORS AW17

News came early November that Italian fashion powerhouse Gucci was going fur free in their collections, news that will no doubt delight animal activists around the world. They join Stella McCartney, Ralph Lauren, Vivienne Westwood and Armani in their decision, which has been celebrated by many. For a cruelty-free Christmas, shrug on a faux fur coat. Technology has meant that good quality faux fur is now indistinguishable from the real deal, but that doesn’t mean you have to pay through the nose for it. French socialite Jeanne Damas is regularly photographed in her cropped faux fur jacket, whilst Queen of cool Caroline de Maigret wore an animal print version to a recent fashion week event. As the temperatures drop, few things will keep you warmer, or as stylish. There’s a reason the fur trade is still alive - it adds an instant glamour, elegance and timeless element to any outfit, but it’s important to stick to cruelty-free options, as this helps end to decrease the demand for real animal fur. Zara has an excellent option at just under £100. Stay bundled up and even pull up the hood for maximum warmth in this classic, naturaltoned option. This winter, think of faux fur as a neutral - it goes with literally anything. ZARA, FAUX FUR COAT WITH HOOD, £99.99 32 | The LOOP

CHRISTIAN SIRIANO AW17

Few things feel as luxuriantly sumptuous as velvet, and in the category of sumptuous, even fewer things are as easily accessible. New technologies mean that velvet and velour, its even cheaper counterpart, are making a huge impact on the high street. Having recently travelled around France’s stunning Southern region, I can indeed confirm that velvet it very much on the menu for chic French girls. Look no further than style icons Ines de la Fressange and Clémence Poésy for proof.

A BILLOWING WONDER

CHLOÉ AW17

A few years ago, Burberry debuted a monogramed, block-patterned cape that literally sent the fashion world into a frenzy. At just under £900, the musthave item was not exactly budget friendly, and so the trend persisted, flooding the high streets with look-alikes galore. Now, three years on, the humble cape remains a winter staple. However, for those constantly on the go, the unsecured nature of the cape means the constant hassle of it slipping off, flying open with a gust of wind or simply getting in the way. This is where the poncho comes in. Since French style is, to a large extent, about looking as though the minimum effort required was put into assembling an outfit, a gorgeously warm poncho in lieu of a coat or a cape is a fabulous all-in-one option that reduces fuss, maximises maneuverability and sacrifices nothing when it comes to style. Parisian fashion house Chloé was particularly enamoured with them this season, giving the silhouette an equestrianesque approach. For something more priced a little more accordingly, Reiss’s investment piece poncho comes in at a cool £165. Still expensive, but worth every penny.

REISS, PONCHO, £165

A STAR-LIGHT STATE OF MIND

Take this shimmery shift dress from Marks & Spencer’s, coming in at an affordable £89 and quite literally the ideal dress for dancing - the fabric will move with a beautiful twinkle, and every eye in the room will be firmly trained on you. Fair warning, you may well upstage the disco ball - but it’s December, so that’s more than alright.

BALENCIAGA AW17

There is always something to be said for metallics at Christmas, but this season, they are officially marked as In by the likes of high-fashion houses Balenciaga, Off-White, Lemaire and many more designers, who chose to showcase brightly metallic silver pieces on their Autumn Winter 2017 runways. There are many ways to incorporate silver into your outfit; the most subtle is a statement bag, be it a clutch or a shoulder tote, which will elevate a simple look without overpowering it. But since it is the party season, I see absolutely no reason not to go full on pedal to the metal, hell for leather (or rather more aptly, sequins).

Sailor’s new book reveals forgotten marine’s life A new book about the Royal Marine Lieutenant (Lt) George Cutcher has been revived by a sailor based at HMS Collingwood. The book that highlight the Lieutenant’s career, is a vivid piece of history that was overlooked until now. Engineering Technician Richard M Jones, specialises in researching forgotten historical events. He received the diary from one of his colleague which had it from his great-great grandfather from World War One. Offering to scan the document and get it bound he was also keen to find out more about the impressive diary and its content.

Through the collection of memorabilia, Richard found out that George Cutcher was persuaded to join the Marines instead of the Royal Navy and so he began his career at Spit Head during Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee Review of the Fleet. After serving across the world on several ships, George ended up in Dartmouth as a Physical Training Instructor. Here, he manage to save the life of the future King Edward VIII during his over-ambitious gymnastic display. In July 1915 George served in the Gallipoli Campaign and in January 1916 he is promoted to Lieutenant and in the summer of the same year he is sent to the combat zone of Somme to take part in the Offensive. Due to his mental and physical health’s deterioration he is invalided back to the UK is March 1917. He kept his link to the sea alive by becoming an attendant of the Time Ball Tower at Deal, an essential aid to marine. When the World War II started, being unable to fight, he wrote letters to those suffering in combat and encouraging them through his personal experiences. George retired in 1962 and died aged 87 in 1967. Richard Jones launched his book, “The Diary of a Royal Marine, The Life and Times of George Cutcher” a way for him to be remembered forever. The launch took place in Gosport and all the profit will to the Royal Navy and Royal Marine Charity.

Divorce... £500 + VAT * Of all the ups and downs life has to throw at us the breakdown of a relationship is one of the hardest to deal with. Whilst struggling to deal with the emotional fall out the harsh reality of considering the financial consequences is a huge burden but essential to resolve early on. When a marriage or relationship breaks down the parties have to divide between them the assets (or debts) they have accumulated. But what if they cannot agree - how can they avoid the trauma and expense of arguing the matter before a Court? First, nothing can be finalised without both parties making complete disclosure of their assets. Some people might not like this but there is no realistic alternative. Therefore, be prepared to produce copies of pay slips, bank statements, shares and building society accounts and anything else showing what money you have and where it is. It must be up to date. Secondly, remember that the children come first. They almost certainly did when you were together and that will not change just because you are now divorcing. The children will need somewhere to live. The parent they live with will need an income to provide for the children. Thirdly, get good legal advice early on from some one who is a specialist. In today’s world changes come about quickly and you need up to the minute expert advice. Perhaps you do not feel ready to take any action but need advice to understand exactly where you stand. We are good listeners and will give you balanced, considered advice to help you to have the confidence to make the decision which is right for you. Driver Belcher has a dedicated family law team with extensive experience of helping people to resolve the difficulties arising from the ending of a relationship. We are accredited specialist members of Resolution, which promotes a non-confrontational approach to resolving legal matters in a practical way. We will however ensure a firm and robust representation to fully protect your position should negotiations fail. Eric Robinson Solicitors Recognised as Leader for Corporate Crime

Finance & Legal Sevices

The Criminal Defence Team at Eric Robinson Solicitors is proud to have been listed and praised in one of the most prestigious annual guides to the legal profession, The Legal 500, for a second consecutive year. After an incredibly busy twelve months which has included the winning of contracts, opening of new offices and substantial increase in work from the corporate sector, it is with great satisfaction that Criminal Defence Team at Eric Robinson Solicitors learned it has once again been named as one of the leaders in its field by The Legal 500. The team, which comprises 15 fee earners plus support staff, is the only one to represent Hampshire in the South East region after clients gave testimony to ‘the attention the team affords to each case and client, which is undoubtedly the reason it receives so many repeat instructions’. The guide highlighted the firm’s work on a range of fraud cases with examples including the defence against accusations of conspiracy to defraud and launder money in a £12m carousel fraud scheme, a Company director in a £1.7m VAT matter and a six-week trial at Southampton Court concerning the avoidance of duty paid on imported tobacco. ‘Of course a lot of our work is supporting individuals who have been arrested and police stations who need representation for those in custody, but an increasing number of business people are calling us when they find themselves facing accusations of wrongdoing,’ says Senior Associate, David Franklin, who leads the team and was noted in The Legal 500 for being ‘impressive in his preparation of cases and client care’. ‘There is a stereotypical view of criminal activity and a stigma that can inhibit people asking for help, but it doesn’t take much

Senior Associate and Head of Eric Robinson Solicitors’ Criminal Defence Team, David Franklin.

for someone in business to find themselves under investigation and in need of robust defence to explain their circumstances.’ In response to winning a new contract for the region, the last 12 months have seen the Criminal Team operate from new offices in Portsmouth, Basingstoke and Bracknell. ‘We are very proud of the team, all their hard work and the industry recognition they have received for another year in The Legal 500,’ says Managing Partner, Catherine Maxfield. ‘They have achieved a great deal in promoting how important the services they provide can be to a wider range of people than most realise.’

Cherry Chocolate Fruitcake

Ingredients 2 cups dried cherries chopped

Fruitcake

1/2

cup brandy or rum

3/4

cup unsalted butter

1/2

We hear the same common concerns about fruitcake. First, does it really keep for weeks safely? Second, isn’t fruitcake really rather awful-tasting?

1

Let’s address the first concern. Fruitcake does keep for weeks! The buttery, eggy batter is dense with dried fruit, candied fruit, nuts, and often alcohol (traditionally brandy or rum). Dried and candied fruit have what we call “low water activity;” bacteria often require moisture to reproduce, so cakes packed with dried fruit are safe to keep for weeks, and will remain shelf-stable if tightly wrapped. To make sure your fruitcake doesn’t dry out, unwrap it every few days and brush it with rum or brandy. Next up: the taste. Fruitcake is likely the most maligned dessert in the history of baked goods. Too many poorly made versions, sticky with dyed candied fruit and overly sweetened with sugar, have given fruitcake a bad rap. That’s a shame, because the equation of buttery cake batter laced with good dried fruit and your favorite toasted nuts and doused with rum is nothing short of brilliant.

cups sugar

1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon vanilla extract teaspoon almond extract

3 large eggs 2 cups of all purpose flour

Instructions Combine the dried cherries with brandy, rum, or water. Cover and microwave for 1 to 2 minutes, stir, then set aside to cool. Preheat the oven to 325°F. Lightly grease the pans of your choice: two 8 1/2” x 4 1/2” loaf pans, five 7” wooden bakers, six 7” paper bake & give pans, one 12-cup bundt-style pan, or two 6-cup bundt-style pans. In a large bowl, beat together the butter, sugar, baking powder, salt, flavors, and cake enhancer. Beat in the eggs one at time. Stir in the flour alternately with the milk. Combine the dried cherries and their liquid, candied cherries, Jammy Bits, chocolate chips, and nuts. Stir into the cake batter. Spoon the batter into the lightly greased pans, filling them about three-quarters full. Bake for 50 to 100 minutes; the smaller the pan, the shorter the baking time. When done, the cakes will be a light golden brown all over, and a cake tester inserted into the center will come out clean. Remove the cakes from the oven. If you’re removing them from the pan(s), wait about 10 minutes, then turn them out onto a rack. If you’ve baked them in paper pans, they can stay right in the pan. If you’re using simple syrup, brush the warm cakes all over, continuing to brush until you’ve used it all. If you choose not to use the syrup, you may wish to brush the warm cake(s) with brandy or the liquor of your choice. When completely cooled, wrap well and let rest at least 24 hours (or for up to a month, brushing with liquor or syrup weekly), before serving. Yield: 1 large bundt-style cake; 2 small bundt-style cakes; 2 standard loaves; or 5 to 6 smaller loaves.

Looking for a special present? The perfect present? How about ticking off something from the bucket list? Or a ‘taster’ before embarking on a PPL/NPPL course? The answer may be on your doorstep with a trial flying lesson. Phoenix Aviation is a CAA registered Flying School at Lee-on-Solent Airfield, offering trial lessons with its fully qualified and highly experienced flying instructors. From just £85 you, or the lucky recipient, could be learning to fly in a C42 Microlight! Phoenix Aviation started operating from Lee-on-Solent Airfield in 2008, with a group of just a dozen private pilots and one leased aircraft. At that time the future of the Airfield was in doubt, and there were no facilities which could be used as a base for operations. Once the threat of imminent closure of the airfield was removed, Phoenix was able to locate into a portacabin, and purchase its first aircraft - a Piper PA28 Warrior. The Club’s activities were soon extended to include flying training for the Private Pilot’s licence, and further aircraft were purchased to accommodate a rapidly growing membership. The Club also branched out into microlight hire and training, using two new Ikarus C42 microlights. At the end of 2014, Phoenix moved into purpose-designed facilities on the second floor of the Control Tower, with excellent views across the airfield. Today Phoenix operates seven owned-aircraft - five 4-seater light aircraft and two 2-seater microlights. The membership of around 130 pilots and students is supported by 12 highly experienced and professional flight instructors. The scale of the operation may have increased, but Phoenix is still run by flying enthusiasts for flying enthusiasts, with the emphasis on making aircraft hire and flight training as affordable as possible.

No lower or upper age limits apply for learning to fly, but for practical reasons teenager and upwards is recommended, and you can’t log hours for your licence until aged 14. Check out our advert and for more information visit www.phoenixaviation.co.uk or call us on 023 9255 2703.

Sophie following her passion

Baby Ballroom

I started riding before I could even walk, but my passion for dressage started around the age of 10. From a young child I knew what I wanted to do with my life and career. I’ve been willing to work hard to succeed with the support of my incredible parents.

C.J. Dancing offer dance classes for all.

When I was 9 I had an amazing opportunity to be given the ride of a 14’2 Welsh D mare. I rode my first dressage test on her, after 2 years I found myself winning my first ever dressage championship at the age of 11. We were then winning all of our dressage tests and I won the under 16’s South East dressage championship and under 21’s South East dressage championship.

If you have a child who enjoys watching Strictly Come Dancing, why not let them try a Ballroom class? It’s fun, social and who knows they might just become the next Strictly star! A New dancing programme ‘Baby Ballroom’ has just started on 5Star, following the lives of different young ballroom dancers who compete or dance just for fun. If you are looking to try a local dance school, look no further than C.J. Dancing who teach in Titchfield and Warsash. Adult classes are also available from the complete beginner to the advanced dancer. Please see their website: www.cjdancing.com for more details, or call Claire on 07786 175188.

In September 2014 my parents bought me an advanced 16’2 chestnut gelding, he has taught me how to ride and compete the advanced movements. On the 1st November 2016 i started training with Jo Wood. Jo has helped me with my horse on a few lows but a lot of highs. The improvements started to show dramatically in my training and competing. I then became part of Jo conscientious team, another exciting opportunity.

Would you like a mooring on the Hamble River? Vicki Wilson has given me a fantastic opportunity to ride to compete Firenze |||. This horse has given many miles under my belt, I look forward to compete this horse in the future along side competing Wild River. Academy of Cheese Courses at Edgcumbes Founded in 1981 by Frank Edgcumbe-Rendle, Edgcumbes Coffee Roasters and Tea Blenders is a family business with a simple love of coffee and tea. Expanding in 2015, the roastery moved to a converted Dutch barn with an on-site cafĂŠ and shop to showcase their freshly roasted coffee beans, loose leaf tea and a delicious home-made sweet menu. With their passion for quality artisan food and drink, Edgcumbes have teamed up with another foodie business and cheese-experts Flavour Tastings to offer new national Academy of cheese certification courses. From January, Level 1 Academy of Cheese courses will be run at their site near Arundel and is one of only a handful of places in the UK to offer them. In these courses participants learn how to taste cheese like a professional as well learn more about how cheese is made, matured and presented.

Edgcumbes and Flavour Tastings are both passionate about educating and inspiring people to know more about the food and drink they consume. These two local foodie businesses are set to tantalise our tastebuds for some time to come! For further information please see: www.flavourtastings.co.uk/academy-of-cheese-training www.edgcumbes.co.uk

As a special offer LOOP Magazine readers can get ÂŁ10 off Level 1 Academy of Cheese Courses by entering LOOP10 at the checkout on Flavour Tastings website.

Excitingly, it also involves tasting 25 artisan cheeses from all over Europe. The new National Academy of Cheese exams are equivalent to WSET for wine connoisseurs and offer a great opportunity to learn more about cheese and result in a nationally recognised qualification. An added bonus is that participants on courses at Edgcumbes will also learn more about being an artisan food business. The courses also include a tour round the roastery and the opportunity to see how coffee beans are transformed into a delectable drink.

Email: jason.hall.5691@gmail.com Mobile: 07590 042373 Facebook: ‘Jason Hall - Art Gallery’ Have you ever thought of having a painting, drawing or sketch created of your pet, boat of just a favourite place as a gift for a birthday, Christmas or other special occasion? Well it’s actually easier than you think. I’m a local artist who has been creating artworks for individuals and businesses for over 35 years. I always pride myself on the personal service that I offer and aim to deliver that special picture capturing the essence of whatever subject I am painting. I work in most mediums from simple pencil and pen through to oil and acrylic paints, and can vary the style of painting to suit the subject. In contrast to my fine art work I also like to create art that makes people laugh and have been cartooning for many years. I always have a lot of fun creating my cartoons and as a keen people watcher and traveller I never run out of humorous material. In fact I have a huge backlog of cartoon ideas just waiting for the right moment to put down on paper. As a result of this, another area that I have always found rewarding is creating custom cards for Christmas and other events for people and companies. So if you want an unusual, unique, personal and funny Christmas card I’m the person that you need to speak to. Painting and drawing has always been a big part of my life, something that I have done since I could first hold a pencil. I have had no formal art training, but have a natural talent which I have developed over the years. The subjects that I cover are quite diverse, ranging from aviation, maritime and automotive pictures through to wildlife, pets and portraiture. I had my first pictures published in the 1980’s in Hong Kong and since this time my aviation cartoons have been featured in several books and I have exhibited and sold both cartoons and fine art paintings at the Mall Galleries in London and other local art exhibitions. So if you would like to know more, see more examples of my work or just have a chat about an idea that you have I would love to hear from you. Email: jason.hall.5691@gmail.com 48 | The LOOP

Around the world in a clean machine Portsmouth-based Team Britannia looks forward to their attempt to break the round the world powerboat record, as onboard journalist Clive Tully explains There can be few record-attempting projects like Team Britannia that have been eight years in gestation – indeed, if you add the original aim to break the round the world powerboat record in Spirit of Cardiff (which didn’t quite make it), you’re talking about a dream nearly 20 years in the making! But through all of this, Portsmouth engineer and businessman Alan Priddy has remained doggedly focussed. “It would have been a lot easier if we were trying to get sponsorship for a sailing attempt,” he admits. “Powerboats don’t seem to have such a broad appeal, particularly when it’s just one racing against the clock.” The official UIM record of 60 days 23 hours 49 minutes has been held by New Zealander Pete Bethune and his boat Earthrace for nearly 10 years, with the previous record held by the British boat Cable & Wireless Adventurer – also for 10 years – which in itself illustrates just how difficult it is compared with sailing records which fall far more frequently. It’s probably best illustrated by Priddy’s latest after-dinner talk entitled “A funny thing happened on the way to the start line” – a light-hearted retelling of the many “now you see it, now you don’t” offers of sponsorship which have come and gone. But despite all the setbacks, Team Britannia’s boat is under construction – indeed, not far off completion – with launching and sea trials hoped to take place in early 2018, with the record attempt later in the year. While the 2002 Spirit of Cardiff attempt in a 33 foot RIB entailed a tortuous route around the north Pacific rim with a total of over 30 refuelling stops, Priddy’s latest boat – to be named Excalibur – is nearly three times the size, and will complete the 23,000 mile circumnavigation with just six or seven refuelling stops. Key to this incredible range is a unique hull design claimed to be 30% more fuel efficient than anything else afloat, along with a massive 30,000 litres fuel capacity spread over six large tanks. It all gets rather more exciting when you include the Clean Fuel factor. Alan Priddy’s development of Clean Fuel has taken place in parallel with the boat project. Mixing water with diesel might sound like the recipe for seized cylinders, but do it right, and you have the means to cut pollution dramatically. Particulate Matter (known as PM) and various Nitrous Oxides are the stuff of smog in every major city throughout the world, and governments are aware that this pollution is responsible for thousands of chronic illnesses and premature deaths every year. Banning diesel vehicles is one drastic solution, but the problem could be solved instantly if they were all burning the water in diesel mix of Clean Fuel. It all comes down to an emulsifying agent which is combined with the water and diesel in a patented mixing process.

Team Britannia gathering in London 50 | The LOOP

contactus@loopmagazine.net

“Team Britannia will showcase the benefits of Clean Fuel by mixing it for use as we go,” explains Priddy. “Water will come from our reverse osmosis watermaker – standard issue on many ships and boats to create potable water from seawater. The Clean Fuel emulsion, water and diesel are piped into the mixing unit – about the same size as a small sewing machine – and the resultant blend pumped into a small holding tank ready to feed the two Fiat Power Train engines. Mixing on the fly gives us the maximum range possible from each 30,000 litres fill of fuel. Data will be fed to Team Britannia’s website so people can track fuel usage, engine temperatures and lots more, which we hope will be of interest to scientists and techno-geeks alike.” The boat itself has been built by ABC Marine on Hayling Island, and while some components have come from as far away as Italy, Priddy has tried to get local involvement as much as possible. Potentially, once the boat has proven its worth, that means setting up a production line to satisfy a demand for copies of Excalibur – it has potential in military, search and rescue, customs and law enforcement roles as well as luxuriously kitted out for private use. All could provide jobs for skilled workers in the Solent area. While the core of Priddy’s crew encompasses people who have accompanied him on previous adventures, five of the 12 places are for former members of HM Forces sponsored by Blesma, the charity for limbless ex-servicemen. These include Lee Spencer, a former Royal Marine who in February 2018 will attempt a solo row across the Atlantic, and Daisy Coleman – invalided out of the Royal Artillery after tours in Iraq and Afghanistan – and now carving an exciting career as a champion P1 powerboat racer.

Broadly speaking, an attempt to circumnavigate the world by powerboat stands the best chance in either spring or autumn. There’ll be news in the New Year about the boat’s launching, and sea trials – you can follow Team Britannia via their website and social media. Kath’s Garden Kath Stratton, 68, lives near Southampton and she is now retired after working in sales and raising four children. She is also one of the four finalists of the 25th year of the National Garden Competition. Kath, together with her husband, Clive, 73, moved into their house eight years ago and after refurbishing the house, she started to untangle the space that today is one of the most marvellous gardens in the country. She confess es that making the garden has been a challenge. The garden has a size of 75ft by 65ft and despite the fact that Clive is no gardener, he has always supported and encouraged his wife to carry on in difficult times. But in order for a garden to be a meditative, happy and peaceful place, first it requires sacrifice, vision and work as on the space were woody shrubs growing. Furthermore, Kath decided from the beginning to follow her vision and not to be influenced by other gardens or by any specialists’ advices from books or magazines. But all the mistakes bring experience and so Kath has learnt a lot of tips for succeeding with her garden. While clearing one tier at a time, she realised

Gardening

the garden was much more spacious and that meant she will need more plants. She brought an orange begonia and a huge hosta which she divided and planted in more spaces of the garden. But there is also a mixture of flowers such as potentillas, lavateras lavateras, azaleas, ceanothus, heucheras and hardy fuchsias to create a colourful space. At the top of the garden, is one of the most special features, a gazebo lined in the interior with shells which makes the garden simply magical. Kath’s garden will be opening under the National Garden Scheme on 28th and 29th next July and she is happy to know that other people can enjoy it too.

Wickham Festival confirms first headline act

Folk legend Richard Thompson has been announced as the first headline act for the 2018 Wickham Festival. Widely regarded as one of the most talented guitarists of his generation, Thompson will close the four-day event on Sunday August 5 with his electric trio. He has been described by the Los Angeles times as the “finest rock songwriter since Dylan and the best electric guitarist since Hendrix” winning the prestigious Ivor Novello award in 2011 and earning an OBE. Equally adept on both electric and acoustic guitars, the founding member of Fairport Convention has been included in Rolling Stone Magazine’s top 20 guitarists of all-time. The three remaining headliners are set to be announced soon adding to a strong line-up which already includes the Undertones, Tom Robinson, Kate Rusby and perennial favourites the Red Hot Chilli Pipers. Organiser Peter Chegwyn said: “We are delighted Richard Thompson has agreed to headline. He is one of the most iconic musicians on the scene and someone who is regularly requested by our fans. “His unique style and wide catalogue of songs will provide the perfect end to what we are sure will be another very successful event. “We are close to finalising some other exciting major acts which will be very popular and we also have a very strong programme both in the Big Top and on the other stages. “Bookings are already going exceptionally well partly on the back of last year’s hugely successful event and partly on the back of our reputation for always delivering a great line-up with a fantastic atmosphere.” Weekend tickets are currently on sale at £120 with Under 16’s admitted half price and Under 10’s gaining free admission. A weekend camping pass is £30 and parking is free. See www.wickhamfestival.co.uk for more details. 56 | The LOOP

Astronomers Predict spectacular display from Rare Stellar Encounter in 2018 Astronomers are getting ready for a high-energy display coming in early 2018, soon a stellar object about the size of a city, meets one of the brightest stars in our galaxy. The cosmic light show will occur when a pulsar discovered by NASA’s Fermi Gammaray Space Telescope swings by its companion star. The pulsar is known as J2032+4127 (J2032 for short), and it is the crushed core of a massive star that exploded as a supernova. Being highly magnetized and in the shape of a sphere It is about 12 miles across, weighing almost twice our sun’s mass, spinning seven times a second. The rapid spin and strong magnetic field of this pulsar, produce a lighthouse-like beam which can be detectable when it sweeps our way. Most pulsars are found through radio emissions, but Fermi’s Large Area Telescope (LAT) detects them via gamma ray pulses which are the most energetic form of light.

Found in 2009 through a so-called blind search of LAT data. Two dozen pulsars were discovered via Fermi in the first year of LAT data, including J2032. Once radio astronomers knew where to look they were able to detect J2032. A team at the Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics at the University of Manchester in the U.K. kept an eye on the object from 2010 through 2014 noticing something very odd indeed. Detecting strange rotation variations, and changes in the rate at which the rotation slows down. Something that had never been seen in any other isolated pulsar. Scientists soon realised that these variations were caused by

another star and the pulsars motion around it. This has become the longest-period binary system containing a radio pulsar, the star which it orbits is named MT91 213 and classified as a Be star, 15 times the mass of the sun and shines 10,000 times brighter. Be stars drive strong outflows, called stellar winds, and are embedded in large disks of gas and dust. 60 | The LOOP

Following an elongated orbit lasting about 25-50 years, it will wiz around its companion in early 2018, plunging through the surrounding disk and triggering what we hope, are astrophysical fireworks. Several features combine to make this an exceptional binary. Out of six similar systems where the massive star uses hydrogen as its central energy source, J2032’s has the greatest combined mass, the longest orbital period, and, at a distance of about 5,000 lightyears, is closest to Earth.

Cosmic rays have been used to reveal a new void in Egypt’s Great Pyramid Cosmic rays may have just unveiled a hidden chamber within Egypt’s most famous pyramid as an international team used muons, which are high-energy particles generated when cosmic rays collide with our atmosphere, to analyse inside Egypt’s Great Pyramid. Muons have the ability to penetrate deep into rock, getting absorbed at different rates depending on the type of rock encountered. Careful placement of muon detectors within and around the pyramid was essential for the team to see how much material the particles passed through. The more mass an object has, fewer muons will hit a detector, less mass, and more muons get to that detector. Analysis of the number of muons that arrived at different locations around the pyramid and their angle of travel the team mapped out cavities within the ancient structure. This technological type of exploration known as muon radiography is perfect for sensitive historical sites which could be damaged by excavation as it uses naturally occurring radiation and causes no

damage to the structure. Successfully mapping the pyramid’s three known chambers namely, the subterranean chamber, the Queen’s chamber, and the King’s chamber, additionally the connecting corridors. A new large void above the Grand Gallery that connects the King and Queen’s chamber appeared however. This new unexplored for thousands of years void is approximately the same volume as the Grand Gallery and 30 metres long. Three different muon detectors were used for this discovery, the nuclear emulsion film within the Queen’s chamber. Similar to photographic film being exposed to light to make a photo, the emulsion reacts to muons and makes a record of their paths. With exciting initial findings and a potential cavity, they confirmed it by placing an instrument that sends a flash of light when struck by muons within the pyramid. Outside the pyramid, they also used detectors that record muons indirectly when the high-energy particles ionise the gas inside. After several months in position to record muons, all three methods confirmed a void in the same location. Journal reference: Nature, DOI: 10.1038/nature24647

Austin A30/A35 Owners Club Southampton and New Forest Group Our meetings are held on the second Thursday of each month at the Empress of Blandings near Cadnam, meetings normally start at 7:30 for 7:45. Our club is open to anyone who is interested in Classic Cars, and our mission is to attract new members. We are most fortunate to have one of the best spare parts departments of any motor club, run by dedicated members. Parts are sold new, restored, and used at affordable prices helping to reduce the cost of classic car motoring. Our parts director Robert Prinn and his brother Rick are experts, and we believe the best Austin A30/A35 specialists in the UK. Parts are sold throughout the UK, Europe and USA. Club members at the end of October had a very entertaining skittles night at Wellow Golf Club. Just one of many interesting social events arranged for club members, who repeatedly ask for this bi annual event. Our last meeting at the Empress of Blandings took place on the 9th November. Members were treated to a fascinating film show titled Rolls Royce in India. During the next few months there will be more social activities to look forward to including a road run to Goodwood at the end of March and hopefully an opportunity for selected Austin’s to drive around the world

famous circuit. Plans for Drive It Day in April are advanced and will include lunch. During 2018 there will be many social and motoring events to look forward to. Members strive to create a welcoming and friendly atmosphere. For more information go to www.austina35sotongroup.co.uk contactus@loopmagazine.net

Computer Know How! Using Out of Date Software?? Time to Trade Up for some New Apps! In this edition of Computer Know How, we will be looking at some new programs that you can use instead of some of the older and sadly unsupported programs we need to replace. Running old, unsupported programs, which are no longer updated can put your computer and therefore your personal data at risk. In theory, hackers can find vulnerabilities in any programs that you use, letting them in to your files and giving them the ability to gain control of your PC. Most software developers combat this by releasing updates periodically which fix those security flaws (like all of those Windows 10 updates). Unfortunately, though some programs are forgotten or abandoned in favour of new ones. In some cases, this could be because the software has reached the end of its natural life, or the company behind it may no longer be around. Regardless of the cause, when programs are left without being updated for a long period of time, they become unsafe to use – this is when you need to replace them! We will be looking at a few of the main culprits, which we have found to be the most commonly used - Windows Live Essentials 2012, Microsoft Office 2007 and Picasa.

Windows Live Essentials 2012 Microsoft’s free collection of handy tools include several fan favourites, Windows Live Mail, Windows Messenger, Photo Gallery and Movie Maker being the most commonly used in this package. Essentials has been hugely popular over the past years, but have fallen by the wayside since Windows 8’s (somewhat fateful) conception as it was never really fully supported. Windows 10 was never really all that compatible with it either. Despite a rather loyal fanbase, Microsoft called time on Windows Essentials in January this year, ending all support. Let’s break down Windows Live Essentials 2012 into its core components – starting with Windows Live Mail. Frequent readers of Computer Know How will know we covered this in a previous editorial, suggesting either Mozilla Thunderbird, or EMClient. Visit either www.emclient.com/ or www.mozilla.org/en-GB/thunderbird/ to download! Windows Messenger has basically been replaced with Skype, and as Microsoft now own Skype, you can use your existing Microsoft account email address with Skype. Another bonus is that Skype already comes installed on Windows 10. For users of Photo Gallery, Windows 10 comes with the Photos app which lets you organise your pictures into albums. Users of Movie Maker will have to wait a while for Windows to upgrade the Photo app with the Story Remix tool, in the meantime Shotcut is a simple open source editing tool that gets updated frequently. Visit www.shotcut.org/ to download.

Microsoft Office 2007 Those of you still clinging to the last vestiges of Office 2007, I am afraid time is up! Microsoft with the latest update, have stopped supporting this Office suite. We have recommended a couple of free options to the Office programs, if you want to avoid either upgrading to the latest Office (2016) or subscribing to Office 66 | The LOOP

contactus@loopmagazine.net

365. Either OpenOffice, which receives a few updates per year, or LibreOffice, which has just received a large update! Both of these are compatible with documents created in Office. For OpenOffice visit www.openoffice.org/download/ and for LibreOffice www.libreoffice.org/download/download/. Another option is to use GoogleDocs. If you have an existing Google account, these are already available to you, they are more basic than office, but are designed to run online, meaning that w hatever you create in GoogleDocs is available wherever you are online. Visit www.google.com/docs/about/ for more info.

Picasa This is another super popular program, Google’s brilliant photo manager and editor was loved by millions. Google did however create a successor, Google Photos (www.photos.google.com) Google’s online tool lets you manage, edit and share your photos. Its editing tools aren’t a comprehensive as Picasa’s but it is really easy to sync all of your photos across all of your devices, including phones, tablets and PCs. On a final note, be prepared for another large Windows 10 update, dubbed The Fall Creators Update. This update adds a whole bunch of new features to Windows 10’s already quite impressive arsenal. We will be looking a bit more closely at what is coming to the new update in the next issue! We wish all of our readers a Merry Christmas, and a successful New Year! Stay tuned for more editorials coming to LOOP magazines near you in 2018. Don’t forget that you can always contact us for free impartial advice. Birds of Hamble Common Hamble Common is 55 acres of coastal heath owned and managed by Eastleigh Borough Council and assigned Special Scientific Interest because of its wide range of habitats. It is the main focus for the Hamble Conservation Volunteers and for those who have not heard of the Common before, it is a downward pointing triangular shaped area bounded by Southampton Water and the River Hamble. This is the final article of a series in which we describe the resident and visiting birds that depend on the unusual habitat provided by the Common.

Birdlife in the Winter Hamble Common supports overwintering goldfinch, greenfinch, meadow pipits and reed buntings that search for seeds in small flocks. The reed buntings are attracted by the purple moor grass seed that is abundant on the Common. There are also mixed flocks of long-tailed, blue and great tits and smaller numbers of goldcrest foraging in the trees.

Stonechat - I R Wats

As the climate changes and we experience more mild winters, some birds have changed their behaviour and it is possible to see over wintering chiffchaff (a small olive coloured warbler) and blackcaps on the Common, although the majority of summer visitors head south for the winter. The local year-round residents - robins, blackbirds, dunnocks, song and mistle thrushes - all hold out by foraging as much as possible during the short winter days across the Common and the woodland fringes.

Black-tailed Godwit - Richard Ford

Redwings often visit for short periods in the winter looking for berries – these are small thrushes that travel down from Scandinavia when the weather gets really harsh. They can be identified by a small orange/red patch under their wings and they usually travel and forage in small groups. Occasionally, fieldfares can also be heard “clacking in the tree tops; these again are visitors from Scandinavia from the thrush family which are more like a mistle thrush in size and they can be identified by their call and their blue/grey heads. Hamble Creek offers the chance to see small numbers of teal, brent geese, black-tailed godwit, lapwing, redshank, greenshank, little egret, mallard, little grebe and a kingfisher, all either foraging in the deep mud or fishing in the shallows. Reed Bunting - Andrew Balmer

Although the goldcrest is our smallest British bird they seem very trusting and quite often let you approach quite closely to observe them feeding in the lower branches of trees. 68 | The LOOP

contactus@loopmagazine.net

The foreshore at low tide offers the opportunity to view large numbers of overwintering waders and geese and small numbers of ringed plovers - with occasional visits from small flocks of more unusual visitors like avocets. The ringed plovers can be fiendishly difficult to spot against the shingle on the beach as they blend in

so well; they are very smart little birds with shortish orange legs and black and white head and chest markings.

Redshank - Richard Ford

More mundane but no less essential for the safety of wildlife, dogs and children are our twice monthly beach cleans, it is disappointing that these are necessary but the quantity of rubbish left during a year fills over 300 black refuse bags. Lapwing - Andrew Walmsley

Redwing - Richard Ford Oystercatcher - Andrew Walmsley

When the weather gets colder flights of up to 250 dunlin can be quite spectacular when they are moving along the shore and very occasionally you may witness a mini murmuration, when the flock arrives on the shore or leaves as the tide rises. Eventually, winter will give way to spring and by that time the birds that make the Common their home all year round will be staking out territories and pairing up in anticipation of the longer daylight hours and the opportunity to raise young.

Hamble Conservation Volunteers We are the Hamble Conservation Volunteers, a group of local enthusiasts committed to preserving the habitat and amenity of Hamble Common for the benefit of the community and wildlife. We assist Eastleigh Borough Council by providing support for a variety of activities. The scrub clearance that takes place on the Common each winter is essential for the retention of its keystone heathland habitat particularly the small but significant areas of bell heather. This autumn scrub clearance will be crucial because cattle have not grazed during the summer and the scrub has enjoyed unrestrained growth. We also provide a large number of bird boxes that protect our birds during the nesting season from predators such as grey squirrels, magpies and woodpeckers.

Long-tailed tit - Andrew Walmsley

Can you help? Most of our tasks are manually intensive and there is no substitute for numbers but there are roles for almost all agility levels. Whether you are an individual or a company looking for a rewarding project for your Corporate Responsibility programme, we are keen to hear from you. If you are interested in joining us please take a look at our web-site. Please note that we have a new site: www.hambleconservationvolunteers.org.uk contactus@loopmagazine.net

Artwork given new lease of life as part of Chesil Extra Care Scheme Community artwork commissioned by Winchester City Council has been given a new lease of life and will be displayed in permanent locations around Chesil Street. The ‘We found it in Chesil’ project was created to run alongside the Chesil Extra Care Scheme development in Winchester. The artwork, which was displayed on the hoardings of the site ,was produced by French artist Laurence Dube-Rushby. After the hoardings were taken down as part of the landscaping work, the community groups involved with the project enthusiastically took ownership of the designs and they are now being displayed in new venues including St Johns House, All Saints School and Chesil Theatre, the artwork is also being displayed at the entrance to Chesil Tunnel.

Success after success as Fareham College shortlisted for FE College of the Year Award Fareham College is in the running to become Further Education (FE) College of the Year after the Times Educational Supplement (TES Global) published its shortlist for this prestigious national award. Recognition of Fareham College’s achievements are coming thick and fast at the moment following the recent news that the college was awarded ‘outstanding’ following its Ofsted inspection in October. Fareham College is now one of only four FE colleges in the country to have achieved the top grade in the last two years.

The artwork was inspired by the stories, memories and images of Chesil Street that people shared with Laurence. Each design was influenced by people and groups engaged with the project including All Saint’s School, Chesil Theatre, residents at the St John’s Charity, businesses including Black Boy, Steele Funeral Directors, The Chesil Rectory and other local organisations including Winchester City Mill, Winchester Area Tourist Guide Association and Hampshire Cultural Trust. Cllr Caroline Horrill, Portfolio Holder for Housing Services and Leader of the City Council said: “It was my very great pleasure to officially unveil the art designs last year and to meet Laurence and the team of people who engaged with the project. I am delighted to see that the project has a positive legacy now these community led designs have found a more permanent home.” For more details of the project visit www.winchester.gov.uk/ community-recreation/arts/public-visual-arts/we-found-it-in-chesil.

Fareham College’s Principal, Nigel Duncan, commented: “We are delighted to have been shortlisted for this award which is testament to the hard work, commitment and talent of all our staff at the College. We are also very proud of our students’ accomplishments. I believe we have created a very special learning environment which is benefitting our whole community.” MP for Fareham, Suella Fernandes MP, added: “Fareham College is a great champion of technical and professional training and apprenticeships. It is doing brilliant work to support the next generation of skilled young people in our area. The College’s ‘outstanding’ Ofsted inspection really reflects the innovative leadership of Nigel Duncan and his management team as well as the staff and students who work so hard.” Fareham College is one of only eight colleges across the United Kingdom that has been nominated for the TES FE College of the Year award. The College currently teaches over 1,500 full-time learners, 1,000 part-time or adult learners and a further 1,000 apprentices. Student employment prospects at Fareham College are exemplary, with 98% of students and apprentices, of all ages, progressing to positive destinations that include employment, apprenticeships or further study. The College is highly regarded for its technical training and comprises a new Centre of Excellence in Engineering, Manufacturing and Advanced Skills Training (CEMAST). The commercial value of this facility is reflected in the partnerships that exist between the College and major companies such as BAE Systems, GE Aviation, Virgin Atlantic, Coopervision, Burgess Marine and Jensen Motorsport. The recent Ofsted inspection stated that at CEMAST ‘apprentices benefit from excellent, high quality resources that exceed industry requirements’. Fareham College Deputy Principal, Andrew Kaye, said: “It is great that the enormous effort that has been put in over a number of years by staff and students alike is now being recognised and that Fareham is competing with the very best colleges from across the country. There is no room for complacency though and we will continue to press ahead with our plans to make Fareham College even better in the future.” The winners of FE College of the Year will be revealed on Friday 23rd February in 2018 at the Grosvenor House Hotel.

Hampshire Farmers’ Market 2018 Every weekend of the year, visitors of Hampshire Farmers’ Market can discover the delights of wonderful food and drink, as well as gifts or cards. All the present producers at the market, must source at least 20 per cent of their ingredients from Hampshire or within a 20-mile radius. Furthermore, any produce grown, reared or raised must spend at least 50 per cent of its time with the producer. Also, traceability is very important for both producers and visitors so the markets are assured that everything is fully traceable. Beside the markets, you can find the producers at the Shamrock Quay Festival in May, the Watercress Festival and Hamble Festival in May and the New Forest & Hampshire County Show in July. New festivals to look forward to in 2018 include Open Farm Sunday on 10th June, Fleet Festival of Food on 23rd September and Oxford Street Southampton Christmas Festival on 1st December. Community News River Park Leisure Centre

The Team take a break

River Park Leisure Centre promises a clearer water for the swimmers from now on, thanks to a £35.5K investment in the new swimming pool technology by Winchester City Council. The investment has been used to improve the swimming provision and to enhance the quality of water in both the main pool and the learner pool. The improvements include the installation of a new ultraviolet system which uses UV light to sanitise the swimming water. This means that the amount of chlorine will be significantly reduced which is essential for the swimmers with a sensitive skin. Lisa Griffiths, portfolio holder for health and well-being commented: “I am so pleased that we are able to offer leisure centre customers a better swimming experience. This investment in the leisure centre will improve both the air and water quality, resulting in a more comfortable swim for everyone.” Other improvements include an anti-wave lane rope to improve the swimming experience and to reduce disturbances in the water, a new giant inflatable for making the pool time fun. Stuart Urquhart, general manager at River Park Leisure Centre said: “We are really pleased that this investment will enhance our customers’ swimming experience and hope that it will inspire even more people to be active and enjoy the sessions on offer.”

Christmas Shoebox Appeal Every year, Hamble Valley Rotary organise the collection of Shoe Boxes from local schools. Yes, shoe boxes but with a difference, they are filled with suitable items for children in disadvantaged situations to brighten up their Christmas! A big thank you to the children (and their parents) in our area who continue to be very generous with their donated items and are proud to be involved in a project that benefits less fortunate children in the world. The items are for education, health and hygiene purposes, for example: school equipment, hats, gloves and scarves, socks, toiletries and sport items and of course TOYS! to fit in a standard shoebox. Grown ups are also welcome to fill a box, not just pupils! So get ready next October if you want to take part in this good cause. Take a look at www.rotaryshoebox.org and you will see the happy faces of the children opening their boxes and discovering their gifts! Consult our website: www.hamblevalleyrotary.co.uk and on Facebook. The Carol Float will be touring the streets in and around Botley and Hedge End with Father Christmas and his elves collecting funds for local causes. Thank you for your continuous generosity. Santa is very touched by the smiles from the little ones as well as the parents and grand-parents who all look forward to seeing him! Best wishes for a Merry Christmas and a peaceful New Year! contactus@loopmagazine.net
