Grand Designs So now that warmer days are approaching, encouraging the more of reluctant of us to venture Est. 45 years once more into our gardens, do you like what you see or does your garden need some extra special attention?
Titchfield
Perhaps you have been meaning for some while now to have it redesigned and have not got round to making any decisions? Well, now is the time to start planning so that your new garden is ready for you to enjoy this summer. The majority of us believe we can design our own gardens, which of course we can. However, for it to be a little more special and to bring together the house and garden in a complimentary manner, we really do need the talented eye of a good designer. Nobody understood this better than Gertrude Jekyll whose pioneering work in the early 20th century still has influence today on garden design. The garden she created at Upton Grey Manor in Hampshire in 1908 was restored 20 years ago and remains one of the most authentic Jekyll gardens in existence. Jekyll had strong ideas about structure, proportion, colour, texture and scent too, but most important of all, her ‘design’ principles stayed as close to natural beauty as possible. She enjoyed both the formal and informal styles and would often mix the two, creating gardens that had separate sections yet flowed naturally from one area to the other. Having our gardens professionally designed is known to add value to the property so it is worth considering using the experts and Gertrude Jekyll would certain approve! If you would like to have an informal chat call to one of Hambrooks’ professional designers call 01489 572285. www.hambrooks.co.uk

New Race for Life Kids Event Launched in Southampton Southampton boys and girls are being invited to get muddy for a good cause - at a brand new event from Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life.
Whether they plan to wade their way through the mud or make a big splash, every muddy step they take will help to bring forward the day when all cancers are cured.”
The city has been chosen to host Race for Life Pretty Muddy Kids for the first time on The Common on Saturday 30th June.
One in two people in the UK will be diagnosed with cancer at some stage in their lives, but the good news is more people are surviving the disease now than ever before. Cancer survival in the UK has doubled since the early 1970s and Cancer Research UK’s work has been at the heart of that progress.
Pretty Muddy Kids is a new exciting obstacle course designed just for children - with added mud, thrills and spills. From scramble nets and space hoppers to mud chutes and muddy pools, children will face a range of fun and muddy obstacles to crawl under, clamber over and charge through. The Race for Life family of events also includes the traditional 5k, 10k and Pretty Muddy courses, which thousands of women will take part in at the same venue on Saturday 30th of June and Sunday 1st July. By taking part in Pretty Muddy Kids, children in Southampton can have fun with friends and help raise valuable funds to beat cancer sooner at the same time. Money raised will help Cancer Research UK scientists find new ways to prevent, diagnose and treat the disease, helping save more lives. Georgina Horne, Cancer Research UK’s Southampton Event Manager, said: “We can’t wait to bring Race for Life Pretty Muddy Kids to the city for the very first time. The obstacle course promises plenty of fun, thrills and spills and we hope children will rally their friends, family and schoolmates to sign up and make a splash for Cancer Research UK. “Race for Life events are not competitive and children can complete the Pretty Muddy Kids course at their own pace climbing, jumping, walking and laughing their way around.

Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life, in partnership with Tesco, is an inspiring women-only series of 5k, 10k, Pretty Muddy, Half Marathon and Hiking events which raise millions of pounds every year to help beat cancer sooner by funding vital research. Cancer Research UK’s life-saving work relies on the public’s support. Thanks to the generosity of its supporters, the charity was able to spend over £35 million on research in the South East on some of the UK’s leading scientific and clinical research helping more men, women and children survive. Georgina continued: “Pretty Muddy Kids has all the fun and camaraderie of our much loved Pretty Muddy events - but with an extra dose of muddy fun for the little ones. It promises to be a fantastic event for all the family so we urge people across the city to sign up right now.” The entry fee for Pretty Muddy Kids is £10.00. The event is open to boys and girls aged from 5 to 12 years old and there is a minimum height requirement of 1.2m. All children must be accompanied by a supervising adult, who have free entry to the event. To enter Race for Life Pretty Muddy Kids today go to raceforlife.org or call 0300 123 0770.

Computer Know How! – Dropbox – Not Just a Pretty Cloud Storage Facility… Dropbox has risen to become one of the web’s most popular cloud services. Since it’s launch (10 years ago now!) it has matured and expanded greatly, but are you using all of its new-fangled features? To be fair, I wouldn’t blame you, as they aren’t shown off by Dropbox, but don’t worry, we’ll get you up to speed in this edition of Computer Know How!
Save Space By default, Dropbox syncs all of your files across every computer you have it installed on. This isn’t a problem if you have a fast PC with oodles of storage space, however on a laptop with a smaller drive, that could get you bogged down pretty quickly! To choose which files or folders you would like to sync to a particular PC, open up your Dropbox client and go to Preferences. Select the Sync tab, then click on Select Folders to Sync, then simply uncheck the items that you don’t want synced to that PC.
Recover Lost Files Remember that file you accidentally deleted? Have no fear, Dropbox will hang onto those “accidentally” deleted files for 30 days. If you need to resurrect one, you’ll need to head on over to the Dropbox web page, found at www.dropbox.com. Sign in, and click on Files in the sidebar, then go to Deleted Files. Simply click on the file that you want to recover, then click on Restore. You also have the option to Delete Permanently if you have any sensitive data that you definitely want rid of.
Accessing Dropbox On-the-Go Dropbox also has a mobile app, available on both Android and iOS devices, letting you browse and view your synchronised files from anywhere. You can also download your file straight onto your phone or tablet, letting you edit them in whichever app you want! After making the edits, make sure you put them back in Dropbox by selecting the Share option!
!!!!!! Important Updates !!!!!! Intel Processor Vulnerability Massive security vulnerabilities in modern CPUs are forcing a redesign of the software at the heart of all major operating systems. Since the issues—dubbed Meltdown and Spectre—exist in the processor itself, Windows, Linux, Android, macOS, iOS, Chromebooks, and other operating systems all need to protect against it. And worse, plugging the hole can negatively affect your PC’s performance. Everyday home users shouldn’t panic too much though. Just apply all available updates and keep your antivirus software vigilant, as ever. If you are concerned, Intel have provided a tool that scans your system, and lets you know if you are at risk, this can be found here https://tiny.cc/2cdeqy. To make sure that your system is up to date, go to the manufacturers website and download the latest drivers. Obviously, we are here to help if you need us! Call Wayne or Gareth at the office or drop us an email!
Save Bandwidth Slow internet speeds? To save using all of the Internet Bandwidth while syncing changes across Dropbox, head back over to Preferences, then switch over to the Bandwidth tab, make sure that the LAN Sync option is enabled! This will use your local network to synchronise files between neighbouring PCs and Macs that are logged into your Dropbox account, meaning quicker syncing, and less hogging of your precious internet connection! If you are wanting to go even further, you can even tweak the download and upload rates which, by default, are set to no limit and an automatic limit. Specifying a lower cap may allow other web services to run significantly smoother on slower broadband connections. Bear in mind that this will slow down the syncing procedure of Dropbox, sharing is caring!

You can download a program called ProduKey for free, which scans the Windows system file and lets you know your product key. You can find it here https://tiny.cc/zv8eqy. For every £1 raised, Solent Mobility matched it doubling the total collected to £320.00. People popped in throughout the day to sample the tasty treats and donate to the firms chosen charity for this year’s Christmas event. How to write and deliver a better eulogy Years ago I conducted a funeral where a family member stood up to pay an extremely short tribute to his Uncle.
“He liked to drink and he liked to fight”. It really was short! Everyone laughed though. It was, after all, the truth. It captured the Uncle perfectly. But it got me thinking about what needs to be considered when planning a good tribute. A good eulogy is a personal tribute to the person who has died, summing up the key events of their life, but more importantly, describing their personality and what made them special to the people attending the funeral. At A H Freemantle we suggest families consider the following 5 points: • Less is more…no it really is. The temptation to cover every detail is overwhelming, particularly if they have had a long life. But typically around 4-5 minutes is about right. • Keep it personal…Short stories rather than lists of facts are more interesting to listen to. Ideally these will be stories where you were involved. Make sure it’s more about them than you though! • Keep it positive...If there are difficult topics to cover the congregation will probably already be aware. You don’t need to break the news to them during the funeral. • Keep a written copy to hand. Don’t risk standing up with only bullet points. If overcome with emotion someone else can stand in and help with a speech written in full. Use a large font if you’re typing it out. • Keep it conversational. Talk clearly and slowly. Look at your listeners and make eye contact while talking to them. You are sharing your personal experiences with them, they are as privileged as you are to be a part of this, but that doesn’t mean you need to lecture them. Always remember that everyone there is behind you 100% so stay calm and take your time. For further advice visit www.ahfreemantle.co.uk or call us 01489 885525 James Keen is Managing Director of A H Freemantle Funeral Directors.

Kick-start 2018 and sign up to Race for Life in Portsmouth Portsmouth women are being encouraged to kick-start the New Year by signing up now to Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life. Every day, 130 people are diagnosed with cancer in the South East. That’s why the charity is urging women of all shapes, sizes, ages and abilities to choose their event - Race for Life 5k, 10k or Pretty Muddy - and pledge to take part on Southsea Common in Portsmouth. The 5k and 10k events take place on Saturday 7th July and Pretty Muddy is scheduled for Sunday 8th July. By signing up to Race for Life right now, women in Portsmouth will make a real difference in the fight against cancer. Money raised will help Cancer Research UK scientists find new ways to prevent, diagnose and treat the disease, helping save more lives. Jenny Ainsworth, Cancer Research UK’s Portsmouth Event Manager, said: “January is the perfect time for women in Portsmouth to commit to getting a little more active in 2018 by signing up for Race for Life and taking on a new fitness challenge. “For those who need some extra encouragement to get moving, Race for Life offers the ultimate motivation. That’s because by taking part and raising money, participants will be helping to fund vital cancer research. It’s time to mark the New Year and make a resolution to remember. By joining like-minded ladies committed to the cause, local women can unite against a disease that affects us all in some way.” Jenny added: “Race for Life events are non-competitive and participants can choose to walk, jog or run around the course. Whether they’re planning a 5k stroll, a 10k sprint or a muddy splash around the Pretty Muddy course, every step women take will help to support life-saving research.” One in two people in the UK will be diagnosed with cancer at some stage in their lives, but the good news is more people are surviving the disease now than ever before. Cancer survival in the UK has doubled since the early 1970s and Cancer Research UK’s work has been at the heart of that progress.

Use the next three paragraphs if Pretty Muddy Kids took place in the town for the first time last year: Last year, Race for Life Pretty Muddy Kids took place for the first time in the city. The children-only, non-competitive 5k obstacle course - with an extra helping of mud - received a whole-hearted welcome from the thousands of children who took part. Thanks to their support and enthusiasm, this exciting event will be returning and organisers are urging kids to secure their place as soon as possible. Jenny added: “We’re delighted to be able to bring Pretty Muddy Kids back to Portsmouth as it’s a fantastic addition to our Race for Life family of events. It has the same fun and inclusive atmosphere of our much loved 5k and 10k events - but with added mud, thrills and spills. “Pledging to take part in Race for Life is a great incentive for women to pull on their trainers and join thousands of ladies across the UK who are coming together in the fight against cancer. Money raised is helping to drive research to help beat over 200 different types of cancer - so every person, step and penny raised makes a real difference.” To enter Race for Life today visit www.raceforlife.org or call 0300 123 0770.
The year to Volunteer - Portsmouth Race for Life Needs You! PEOPLE in Portsmouth who are looking to make a resolution with a difference, and connect with their local community, are being urged to volunteer at Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life. By signing up to Race for Life’s volunteer team, and joining the fight against cancer, Portsmouth’s men and women will be playing a crucial part in beating this devastating disease. As the countdown starts to the 5k, 10k and Pretty Muddy events on Southsea Common in Portsmouth on Saturday 7th July and Sunday 8th July, organisers are calling on people to sign up as helpers at www.raceforlife.org Jenny Ainsworth, Cancer Research UK’s Portsmouth Event Manager, said: “This New Year, why not make a pledge to make a difference. The atmosphere promises to be electric as people from all walks of life unite in the fight against cancer. Mayflower Theatre sees Red…and Gold
history. In conjunction with this we have looked at comparable theatres from across the UK built around the same time as ours. The paint samples taken from our walls revealed several different colour schemes over the years including grey, cream, yellow and even a vivid pink scheme in the 1970s.”
Mayflower Theatre today unveiled its highly anticipated new colour scheme which will be in place following a multi-million pound refurbishment of the theatre’s auditorium in 2018. The new red and gold scheme is a tribute to the glamourous 1920s heritage of the Grade II Listed building. The theatre’s last major auditorium refurbishment was over 30 years ago, when the building was painted its current colour-scheme of turquoise, ocean blue and salmon pink. Michael Ockwell Mayflower Theatre Chief Executive, said, “Since we announced our Mayflower 90 Auditorium project in April, the one question I keep getting asked is about the colour scheme. We spent a long time working with paint analysis experts to rediscover what colour schemes have been used over our 89 year
The Mutt House
We decided on a Red and Gold scheme as it celebrates the tradition and heritage of our building, while also meeting the practical needs of a modern theatre. We sincerely hope that the community embraces this exciting new colour scheme and shares our vision to protect and enhance the legacy of the theatre.” The theatre will begin testing samples of paint before Christmas, Michael added, “It’s not a case of popping down to the local DIY store for some sample pots of paint, we have to do this large scale – roughly a 20ft section of wall in the balcony will be painted, and then we have to shine our new lights on this area to see the final effect”. The theatre will close from 10 June to late September 2018 for the refurbishment, which will also include new seating, as well as other major improvements to the levels of comfort, accessibility and efficiency at the theatre. So far the theatre has secured £2.6 million towards its multimillion pound auditorium refurbishment. This is thanks to audience donations, as well as significant gifts from the Garfield Weston Foundation and Backstage Trust. As a charitable trust which receives no direct public subsidy it is seeking public help to raise the remaining funds needed.

The Old Mill A new beautiful restaurant for Botley set in a unique historic setting. Botley has a new restaurant and its situated within the Botley Mills, the newly opened Old Mill Restaurant is serving quality British cuisine put together with locally sourced ingredients, and is rapidly building a reputation as a great place to enjoy a lunch or dinner. This is only part of the story though as the new team undertook a huge renovation project to create three beautiful dining rooms, making it one of Hampshire’s most unique venues. The main dining room with its stunning original features including a waterfall and milling hopper is a great place to spend time, in an atmospheric environment with family and friends, whilst the Ruston Room still has the original millstone housing in place, as well as the fantastic early 1900’s engine that the room takes its name from as its centrepiece, making it a truly special place to enjoy your dining experience, and finally the Heritage Room housing mill artefacts provides a more intimate setting, with its low key lighting and beautiful décor, making it great place to spend an evening. (This room is also available for private dining or special celebrations such as birthdays or Christmas) The team behind the Old Mill live locally in Curdridge and Hedge End, they came together to create something they believe will appeal to people wanting to enjoy great food & wine, served by caring staff in a unique setting.

Exploring Indochina With Amazing sights, ancient history, beautiful scenery and diverse culture, Indochina offers an abundance of memorable travelling experiences. This increasingly popular destination clearly has much to offer on the tourist trail and whilst Thailand is an old hand when it comes to tourism its neighbours are less so. Vietnam is a great first stop on the map. It’s viewed as the next most developed country in the mainland region after Thailand and while not as unknown and untouched as parts of Cambodia and Laos, it combines enough authenticity without being too remote and inaccessible. It has a trodden tourist path which you can take via a north to south or south to north route with some off the beaten track towns in between
The tailors in Hoi An are as much a compulsory traveller must-do as the beautiful town itself and much needed relaxation can be sought at the beaches in Na Trang and a trip to the local hot mud springs.
Hanoi is a popular starting point, travelling south down to Ho Chi Minh. Hanoi is a fast-paced exciting city, with motorbikes whizzing past you from all directions and where bustling Vietnamese life teems from every nook, cranny, side-street and market. Cruise along the tranquil waters of Halong Bay for a couple of days, marvelling at the spectacular scenery from the junk boat before soaking up the royal history in Hue.

The Vietnamese are friendly, open and interested in learning everything about you as you will be with them. You’ll experience not only the country’s ancient history but be stunned by its most recent, from the Viet Cong underground combat base that is the Cu Chi Tunnels to the war victims you will pass on the street. Explore at every opportunity, try local dishes (Vietnam’s reputation for great food is true) and feel your head spin as you try and adapt to the pace and chaos all around you. Vietnam is changing fast, but bicycles and mopeds still greatly outnumber cars, so now is the time to visit this most fascinating and colourful destination, whilst so much of its unique character and traditions is still in evidence! Vietnam works as a great stand alone destination, however it works equally as well in tandem with its neighbours Cambodia and Laos.
Call in for a coffee and chat
Of the Three countries of Indochina, Laos is the most frequently overlooked, which is a shame for it has much to offer with its picturesque and laid back capital of Vientiane, the golden temples of Luang Prabang along with some of Asia’s best Mountain scenery, Angkorian ruins hidden in its southern reaches; whilst its rivers conceal quiet jungle covered islands, vast limestone caves and cavernous underground rivers, you can easily spend two weeks just exploring the highlights of Laos. Cambodia is the Southeast Asia of countless postcards; the temples of Angkor are undoubtedly Cambodia’s biggest draw. Built between the 9th & 13th centuries and abandoned to the jungle in the 15th century, Angkor is fascinating to explore, from the smiling faces of Bayon and the vine entwined “Tomb Raider temple” Ta Prohm, to Mayan like Pyramids. Yet there is so much more to explore, take a boat ride to the floating villages of Tonle Sap Lake and visit the opulent palaces and colonial heritage of Phnom Penh or jungle trek in remote Mondulkiri Province. There are many touring options to choose from when travelling around Indochina and whilst Escorted Touring has been the most popular style of holiday, more and more tourists are looking at independent travel as an option, particularly in Vietnam. For tourists looking to visit 2 or all 3 countries in one visit and are short on time, Small Group Touring may be the answer, it has many of the advantages of Escorted Touring but in a more personal style that also allows you to access areas that you cannot always reach in a larger group.

With the brighter days upon us, we notice the dust and mess in our houses more, and spring traditionally inspires us to take the opportunity to clean the house and declutter, but how about adding another spring clean this year… that of our bodies too? Spring is a great time to dust off those trainers, oil the chain on the bike, pull it out of the shed and go for a ride to enjoy our wonderful surroundings, or for a walk to look for the first bluebells. We can start to have lighter meals, bursting with seasonal vegetables and fruit, alongside plenty of nonalcoholic fluids to detoxify us after all the winter drudgery and Christmas feasting. We should also take this time to look in our medicine cabinets, remove what’s out of date and replace it. Prescribed medications that are no longer being used should be returned to your pharmacist for safe and correct disposal as they mustn’t be thrown in the bin or flushed down the toilet. Sadly, even if many of us take up this advice, viruses will be still making their rounds which in turn means that, our NHS continues to remain strained and under pressure. The regular reports persist; of people being left on trollies in corridors, surgery being cancelled due to a lack of beds and people being sent home too early to free up beds. Therefore, it is so important to heed the regular publicised advice about who to approach when you are unwell and to keep your medicine cabinet well stocked, thereby taking responsibility for our own health and wellbeing, whatever the time of year.

When you call for an urgent appointment, you will speak to a ‘care navigator’ who will ask you some questions about your problem and place you on the triage list for a health professional to call you back. Your consent will be obtained to share your information with the healthcare professionals at the Hub and for them to access your medical records. Continuity of care and confidentiality is robust and adhered to. All your notes from your consultation will be visible to your own GP. There are links below explaining the service more fully. Please do take the time to read and understand them. Finally, here at Lapis Care We have heeded our own advice with the ‘Spring Clean’ theme and we have recently moved offices. We are now based next to the entrance to the Meon Valley Marriot Hotel at Unit 9, Shedfield House Dairy. The office is open during usual office hours and the kettle is always on, please feel free to pop in for a cuppa and a chat and even advice. You are always welcome. Trust in Blue Retired local police officers team up to provide uniquely trusted and highly vetted handyperson service with ‘Trust in Blue’ Retired police officers with a passion for indoor and outdoor maintenance are taking up tools to provide peace of mind to people and businesses in the Solent area tackling the ongoing problem of finding a trusted and reliable handyman. Typically police officers retire after 30 years service and many are still eager to continue playing an active and productive role in their communities. All Trust in Blue handymen are required to prove themselves capable and experienced in home maintenance works before joining the network and all are interviewed and Enhanced DBS (CRB) Checked. Managing Director, Nick Orde-Powlett, hopes that the company’s unique and rigorous selection process will bring security and peace of mind to people in the area: “Our vetting process is second to none. All of our handymen are friendly retired police officers with many years working in the local community under their belt – they understand peoples’ concerns and fears better than anyone else and they genuinely care.” Jake Stevenson, Trust in Blue Handyman, states: “Having served as a police officer I am aware there are a small number of trades people who are out to take advantage of clients and I understand it is sometimes daunting for them to allow a stranger into their homes. We understand peoples’ fears and we will provide a professional and trustworthy service at a fair price that is agreed prior to any work being carried out. As a company we will do the smaller jobs that some builders and tradespeople are not prepared to do. However for me it is not all about doing the work and rushing off, sometimes it’s about 26 | The LOOP

The sixth volume in the British Historic Town Atlas series was launched on Wednesday 15 November 2017, at a reception hosted by the City Council. Using maps, photographs and illustrations - many of which published for the first time - the Atlas, which is also the eleventh volume in the Winchester Studies series, begins with the period of Roman history when Winchester was known as Venta Belgarum, the capital of King Alfred’s Wessex and later a judicial centre and important county town. The Atlas, edited by Professors Martin Biddle and Derek Keene, was published jointly by the Historic Towns Trust and Winchester’s Excavations Committee and includes the first comprehensive survey of the Roman city and its history to be published in over a hundred years, as well as documenting Winchester’s later growth and development drawing on the results of the most recent archaeological and documentary research. Cllr Caroline Horrill, Leader of Winchester City Council said “In Winchester, we pride ourselves on our history and heritage. Today, as we closely examine the topography and layout of our evolving district, this compilation of maps, photographs and illustrations offers a fascinating insight into developments undertaken by past generations. Our archaeology and heritage will continue to be protected as we look to build a positive future for Wintonians. We are pleased to have Professor Biddle chairing the archaeology panel for Central Winchester as this ensures that his vast knowledge is harnessed for the public good.” Dame Mary Fagan, Patron of Winchester Excavations Committee said: “Congratulations to Martin and his team as well as Giles Darkes, the Historic Towns Trust cartographer, on this magnificent and fascinating book. We are grateful to Winchester City Council for its support and for hosting the reception.” Nigel McNair-Scott, Winchester Excavations’ Vice Chairman, also announced a drive to raise £1million over four years to finish the publications of Winchester Studies, to complete the analysis of the wealth of archaeological and other evidence as well as enabling the literature and materials to remain publically accessible. The British Historic Towns Atlas of Winchester is published by Oxbow books and can be purchased here: www.historictownsatlas.org.uk/atlas/volume-vi/winchester

Choir to perform new work by Handel Portsmouth Festival Choir is recognised for its innovative programming. This year their Musical Director, conductorcomposer Tom Neal, has discovered a version of the Easter Passion of Christ, written by that favourite of oratorio composers, Handel. Because the Bach Passions are so frequently performed at Easter, this beautiful work has been somewhat overlooked. However, it has now been published in a new edition, researched by internationally known tenor soloist and musicologist, Neil Jenkins. Choir members are very excited that Neil Jenkins himself will sing the lead role of the Evangelist in their performance of this work on Sunday 18th March 2018. The music is completely new to all the members of the choir, but because they are familiar with Handel’s style from singing the ever popular Messiah, they are enjoying rehearsing music which while quite new to them seems strangely familiar. For this special occasion the choir will be accompanied by the Chichester based early music group, the Consort of Twelve. They are an ensemble of musicians from Hampshire and Sussex who specialise in the performance of Baroque music using the styles, techniques and instruments of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. They too are thrilled to be taking part in this performance of the Handel Passion.

Nuffield Southampton Theatres continues to build momentum following NST City opening World premieres, critically acclaimed visiting productions, and performances from the biggest and best acts on the comedy circuit all feature in Nuffield Southampton Theatres’ (NST) inaugural programme for its brand new performing arts venue, NST City, which recently opened with the world premiere of Howard Brenton’s The Shadow Factory. Coming up at both NST City and NST’s original home NST Campus, in 2018, are three more world premieres, including SS Mendi: Dancing the Death Drill, adapted from the book by Fred Khumalo and part of 14-18 NOW the UK’s arts programme for the WW1 centenary; a new version of Aristophanes’ comedy Women in Power; and a new musical adaptation of David Walliams’ Billionaire Boy. Visiting productions include the Sebastian Faulks’ mesmerising story of love and courage Birdsong; a riotous reinterpretation of one of Shakespeare’s best loved plays, A Midsummer Night’s Dream – direct from critically acclaimed London and international festival runs; and a comedy love letter to the schools and music of the 90s Education, Education, Education. The opening of NST City has also given NST the opportunity to expand its core programme to introduce music, film, dance and circus; continue to develop its comedy and spoken word strands; and feature the very best studio scale theatre from all over the country in NST City’s brand new studio theatre, including Palmyra and Noisy Holiday – both supported through NST’s artist development programme, Laboratory. Director of Nuffield Southampton Theatres, Samuel Hodges, said: “2018 is an exciting year for the theatre. I am very proud of our inaugural season that features four world premieres,

international collaborations, both new talent and household names, untold local stories of national significance, and a brand new programme of studio theatre, music, comedy, film, circus and dance across our two venues. “This season marks a seismic step change for NST and for the city of Southampton’s cultural life. It is a season which champions new work, in the knowledge that theatre can respond most urgently to the world we live in today. A season which looks back to ancient Greece, to 16th century Spain, to both World Wars, and even to 1980s Reading in order to talk about what’s important today. It asks questions about historical whitewashing, about consent, about community, and about faith. It’s going to be a big year.”

Squeeze to headline 2018 Wickham Festival One of Britain’s top bands of the past 40 years, Squeeze have been announced as the latest headline act for the 2018 Wickham Festival. The hugely-popular new wave icons will top the bill on Saturday August 4 supported by John Ilsley of Dire Straits, the Tom Robinson Band and Ferocious Dog among others. They join Kate Rusby who stars with Show of Hands on Friday August 3 and folk legend Richard Thompson who closes the event on the Sunday night backed by the Undertones, the Blues Band and the Red Hot Chilli Pipers.
the Junction, Tempted, Labelled with Love, Pulling Mussels from a shell… and many more. They join Sunday headliner Richard Thompson who is acknowledged as one of the most talented guitarists of his generation; he will close the four-day event with his electric trio. He has been described by the Los Angeles times as the “finest rock songwriter since Dylan and the best electric guitarist since Hendrix” winning the prestigious Ivor Novello award in 2011 and earning an OBE. Equally adept on both electric and acoustic guitars, the founding member of Fairport Convention has been included in Rolling Stone Magazine’s top 20 guitarists of all-time.
The Thursday headliners are expected to be revealed soon although The South and the Dhol Foundation have already been confirmed. Organiser Peter Chegwyn said: “The line-up is already looking incredibly strong and advance tickets sales are reflecting that. “We still have a couple of names to add but we are delighted to have so many top acts signed up so far in advance. It is exciting that as our reputation grows we are getting a lot of bands approaching us and wanting to play here. “Squeeze are a fantastic addition to the bill. Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook are widely regarded as two of the finest songwriters of their generation and their energetic sets always get the crowd dancing.” Dubbed the heirs to Lennon and McCartney, the duo have enjoyed huge chart success with such hits as Cool for Cats, Up

Chegwyn added: “Richard Thompson is one of the most iconic musicians on the scene and someone who is regularly requested by our fans. “His unique style and wide catalogue of songs will provide the perfect end to what we are sure will be another very successful event. We already have a very strong programme both in the Big Top and on the other stages as well as the usual entertainment and activities for children. “Bookings are already going exceptionally well partly on the back of last year’s hugely successful event and partly on the back of our reputation for always delivering a great line-up with a fantastic familyfriendly atmosphere.” Weekend tickets are currently on sale at £130 with Under 16’s admitted half price and Under 10’s gaining free admission. Finance & Legal Successful Separation? Keep Talking The breakdown of a relationship is upsetting, difficult and in many cases, truly devastating. Couples and families in this situation go through a multitude of emotions; hurt, anger, grief, bitterness, frustration, fear and uncertainty about the future, but the key to moving forward is, however painful, communication. Finding constructive ways for couples to deal with separation in a non-confrontational way is better, both financially and emotionally, for everyone involved and one of the most popular methods is that of ‘Mediation’. Mediation can play a major role in helping couples wishing to divorce resolve a variety of issues including childcare, finances and shared assets. It is a private and confidential dispute resolution process in which an independent, neutral person, the ‘Mediator’, is appointed to support both parties in reaching an amicable settlement before there is a need to spend further time and often a great deal of money in Court. Mediation provides the forum to calmly explore the motivations and agendas of parties in order to potentially open up a whole range of solutions that can satisfy both individuals and reach a mutually acceptable, lasting agreement for the future. At the core of mediation is the concept of confidentiality. Mediation involves not only joint meetings attended by the mediator and both parties, but also private meetings between the mediator and the individual parties alone. This can usually help avoid the raw emotion that is inevitable in a lot of initial face-to-face meetings. What is discussed in those meetings remains entirely confidential, although the financial aspects can be disclosed.
Vicki Rawlins, Head of Family Law, and Beverley Pym, Head of Mediation at Eric Robinson Solicitors, are two of the firm’s fully qualified Mediators and they have made a video explaining their role. Divorce... £500 + VAT * Of all the ups and downs life has to throw at us the breakdown of a relationship is one of the hardest to deal with. Whilst struggling to deal with the emotional fall out the harsh reality of considering the financial consequences is a huge burden but essential to resolve early on. When a marriage or relationship breaks down the parties have to divide between them the assets (or debts) they have accumulated. But what if they cannot agree - how can they avoid the trauma and expense of arguing the matter before a Court? First, nothing can be finalised without both parties making complete disclosure of their assets. Some people might not like this but there is no realistic alternative. Therefore, be prepared to produce copies of pay slips, bank statements, shares and building society accounts and anything else showing what money you have and where it is. It must be up to date. Secondly, remember that the children come first. They almost certainly did when you were together and that will not change just because you are now divorcing. The children will need somewhere to live. The parent they live with will need an income to provide for the children. Thirdly, get good legal advice early on from some one who is a specialist. In today’s world changes come about quickly and you need up to the minute expert advice. Perhaps you do not feel ready to take any action but need advice to understand exactly where you stand. We are good listeners and will give you balanced, considered advice to help you to have the confidence to make the decision which is right for you. Driver Belcher has a dedicated family law team with extensive experience of helping people to resolve the difficulties arising from the ending of a relationship. We are accredited specialist members of Resolution, which promotes a non-confrontational approach to resolving legal matters in a practical way. Assemble the cake Take the cooled cakes and carefully slice the domed top off of each to provide a flat surface. Slice each cake in half with a sharp knife so you have got 4 thin cakes. Place the bottom section onto a board, using a small dollop of frosting to secure it in place. On top of the bottom layer of cake add a tablespoon of jam and smooth down with the palette knife, leaving about half an inch to the edge, you don’t want your jam to seep out the edges. Repeat on every layer of the cake apart from the top one. Place some frosting on the top layer of the cake then spread it all over and down the sides, covering the cake entirely. Now add the chocolate fingers. Work your way round the cake, pressing them lightly into the frosting to hold them in place. Add the strawberries to the top of the cake leaving them whole. Put as many as you can fit on.

Frosting 1. Cream the butter on its own for about 5 minutes on a medium speed. 2. Sift the icing sugar into the creamed butter and then mix together on a slow speed. Gradually increase the speed until it forms a thick paste. 3. Add the prosecco and whisk together for one minute. Set aside. 38 | The LOOP

Space Times Tim Peake – Thoughts on the solar system Having not been a great fan of heights, astronaut Tim Peake found his first leap of faith out of an aircraft at 14,000ft far more terrifying than going into space interestingly. He said he found Sandhurst was an incredibly positive experience for him and he held a military career serving as a Major in the Army as a helicopter pilot. Tim describes himself as a very ordinary person, but having orbited the Earth a mere 2,720 times one thing that did strike him most was how vast the Pacific really is, as during an orbit the entire planet beneath him is blue. With many spectacular views a lot of the time into the darkness of space, or back at the Earth while floating in a weightless environment, still must have been an extraordinary experience. Although Tim found coming back down to Earth much harder than going into space, compared to initially being physically enabled in the rocket ride up into orbit, Earth’s gravity is punishing on the body when he returned he felt nausea, dizziness, vertigo and inability to balance, having to learn how to walk again and for three or four days he just wanted to sit in a chair! There was a huge effect on his body as a result of human spaceflight with cardiac and optical changes muscular skeletal changes, and having to readjust to Earth after 6 months in space with rehabilitation programmes and tests on his physiological function, it was a commendable task in itself just coming back. Tim is a strong believer that there could be life elsewhere in the universe and highlights the moons around Saturn and Jupiter with icy crusts and liquid oceans beneath them. As Tim knows where there is water could be life, he believes that we could find single-celled microbiological life forms past or present, in our own solar system. Hinting that we may be very close to
finding past signs of life on Mars within a few years. Suggesting of course also that single cell life forms have the potential to develop into more complex forms of life. Tim also believes that all world leaders should have to go into space, at least theoretically. Astronauts get to experience what is known as the overview effect, this experience you get once you have seen the Earth from space gave Tim a real sense of how fragile our ecosystem is, how frighteningly thin our atmosphere is, the huge areas of pollution and deforestation across continents. Continuing to describe that when we look up we see blue skies, it is certainly not the same environment to being in space as an astronaut, when you look up you see the vast darkness of nothingness and it is not warm and welcoming, suddenly you realise how vulnerable we are on a small rocky planet and that we do need to look after our home.

Should we brace ourselves for Tiangong-1 Chinese space station?
An illustration of China’s Tiangong-1 China Manned Space Agency
As the Chinese space station is returning from space will it come crashing into Earth? Pieces weighing up to 100kg could make it to the surface when speculated out of control 8.5 ton laboratory breaks apart in our atmosphere. Tiangong or “Heavenly Palace” was launched in 2011 and was a great achievement for China forming a part of an ambitious scientific push to turn China into a space superpower. Tiangong was used for both unmanned and manned missions but in 2016 after months of speculations, Chinese officials confirmed they had lost control of the space station and that it would crash in 2017/2018, as we saw nothing in 2017 we are due its arrival to Earth. Chinese space agency notified the UN that it expects it to crash land between October 2017 and April 2018. With a steady orbital decay in recent weeks it has started falling faster below 300km in denser atmosphere, the rate of decay is getting higher. Although most of the space station craft is expected to burn up in the atmosphere, some parts may still weigh up to 100kg when they crash
Ageing satellites set to be given a life extension using UK Space Drones. A company in the UK aims on launching small space vehicles that could give ageing communications satellites an extended life span, by the small drones docking with craft in orbit, controlling them until they run out of fuel. Effective Space which is based
into Earth although the chance that anyone will be harmed is considered remote it is being closely watched by China and the United Nations “Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space” with a carefully monitored descent as predicting where it is going to land would be impossible to determine even within the days ahead of its landing. The potential crash zone is southern Europe and further south to South Africa. The European Space Agency is issuing regular updates about the space stations decent to Earth, and the current window of estimated surface contact is 17th of March to the 21st of April and re-entry will take place anywhere between 43°N and 43°S (e.g. Spain, France, Portugal, Greece, etc.). However the ESA added that it will never be able to give a definitive time location prediction but areas outside the danger zone can be excluded. The craft is expected to burn up entering the atmosphere and the remaining wreckage will fall without endangering the surface, into a designated area of the sea. There is one small concern with the station, it is carrying a highly toxic chemical called hydrazine, used as rocket fuel but exposure to humans is believed to cause symptoms such as seizures and nausea with long term contact causing cancer. It is worth remembering that in the history of spaceflight, no known person has ever been harmed by space debris re-entering to Earth.
in London has signed a $100 million contract to extend use of two satellites for a large communications operator to be announced soon. Set to be sent in 2020, two drones will be sent into geostationary orbit 36,000km above the surface of the Earth. Attach themselves to satellites and keep them in correct orientation for up to 5 years. Daniel Campbell MD of Effective Space describes how many satellites are designed for service for 15 years and when that time has come, communications hardware will remain effective but there is a failure for propulsion systems to maintain the correct orbital position. This is a cost effective method to keep stations in the correct orbit for several more years. Effective Space has their headquarters in the UK and their technology originated from their research centre in Israel. In the UK development, manufacturing and satellite operations will be based and companies such as Qinetiq, Oxford Space Systems and Neptec are expected to contribute to its development. The UK Space Agency, which acts as both a regulatory and funding body, said: “The UK can thrive in the commercial space age as . . . innovative companies develop new products and services. We engage regularly with these companies and offer a safe and competitive regulatory environment for new commercial ventures to support our growing space sector.”

Burpees
We’re right into 2018 now and the festive season with all its tasty treats is distant memory. If you made any new years health and fitness resolutions, have you stuck to them?
Starting in a standing position, crouch down, kick your legs pack to a Push up position, perform a Push up and them reverse the movement, jumping at the top.
It’s right around now that people’s good intentions start to crumble as things get tough or you lose that fire and determination you started with. I want to share some tips to help you stay on track and reach your goals: 1. Last time I spoke about writing down your goals and keeping them somewhere prominent. If you haven’t done that already go and do it now. Seeing your goals several times a day will remind you what you’re doing and why you’re making changes. 2. Get an accountability buddy. Find a workout buddy or several of them. Have someone to go and workout with or cook a healthy meal for each other once a week to add a fresh dose of peer pressure to stay on track and keep your buddies in the game. 3. Share your goals and progress. This can be as simple as telling some work colleagues what you’re doing and why. It could also be creating a social media account such as Instagram and posting your workouts and healthy food as a diary. It will keep you motivated to watch what you eat and you may even inspire others.

Fitness is an essential part of life and I truly believe that it’s way easier if you can find activities you enjoy. It can be anything from a long walk, a muddy obstacle race, lifting heavy stuff, dancing or scaling a mountain. It shouldn’t matter to anyone but you what you enjoy doing to stay active. If you’re one of those people who gives themselves the excuse “I just don’t like....’ insert activity here” (running, walking, step class etc) then you haven’t found what you truly enjoy and will help change your life.
3
Stop making excuses to yourself, stop finding ways to hide from effort and find your passion. Have an awesome day and get up, get out and get it done!!! Workout 1 is a superset so you’re going to perform 10 reps of the first movement then straight into 10 reps of its partner movement. Rest for 1 minute and repeat for 5 rounds before moving on to the next pair in the same format. Workout 2 is a HIIT workout with 40 seconds work and 20 seconds rest for each movement. Comolete the cycle 3-5 times, depending on your fitness level or available time.

A small local business with a big punch As some of our readers may be aware, our featured waste removal company‘Rubbish Clearance and waste Removal Ltd’ has over the past couple of years been sponsoring JG Speedfit Kawasaki’s double championship winning sidecar team. Whilst discussing this with a customer whilst clearing their garden and workshop the customer asked Jim Gildea, (owner of Rubbish Clearance and Waste Removal Ltd) “Why don’t you support someone local with their sport?” Jim drove away apparently pondering this before phoning his customer back and saying “good point, -any suggestions?”
Jim Gildea said “I suppose I like to support the sports I wish I had done myself, and now that I’ve talked with Floyd and those around him that know him, I think supporting him this year is a win for both of us, he gets a little financial help with training fee’s etc and we get to be associated with a very nice and really really talented local athlete, who I’m sure will promote our company in the same professional and effective manner he takes care of his own business in the ring! I’m going to encourage Floyd to start a ‘Floyd Moore boxing page on face book so other enthusiasts can support and follow him too! I’m also looking forward to going to see him train and to fight, and to see how he helps coach the kids coming into the gym on occasion – it’s a sport I know nothing about so it will be really interesting! We have asked Jim to keep us informed and let us know how Floyd gets on in 2018, we will do our best to keep all our readers updated too!”
Floyd Moore, a local boxer was suggested! Floyd started boxing at Titchfield when 15. He turned professional with Michael Bailingail at 19. Floyd has had 23 fights so far with 15 wins (9 by Knock-out), lost 6 and drawn 2. He has won the British and international masters belts and is a two time southern area champion. He weighs in at 9 stone 9lb and fights in the lightweight division. So. As well as honouring previously arranged commitments to the JG Speedfit Kawasaki Team in 2018 Rubbish Clearance and Waste Removal Ltd (Total Waste Removal) will be giving this local boxer, who is up at 5.30am every day, getting on with his day job, a helping hand.
Spirit of Enterprise and Mugs of Hot Chocolate Warm Brookfield’s Budding Apprentices Hazel Robinson – who coordinates the student leadership programme at Brookfield - stated: “The ‘Apprentices’ initiative is intended to develop an instinct for entrepreneurship, confidence and team working - three critical skills in today’s world. But it also identifies very clearly those students who have strong leadership potential, at the start of the process to select the next team of head boys, head girls and prefects.”
In spite of the cold, damp weather in recent days, teams of Year 10 students at Brookfield Community School in Sarisbury Green near Fareham have been busy outdoors. With a spirit of enterprise that Lord Sugar himself would admire, teams from the different colour houses set out to make as much money as possible from a £20 ‘grant’ provided by the Friends of Brookfield School. Given just a few short planning sessions, in which each team had to produce a properly costed business plan, the students had just one week – in break times and after school – to sell their wares. These ranged from festive packages of sweets and warming, creamy hot chocolate to a full car wash and polish. 48 | The LOOP
contactus@loopmagazine.net
One eager car wash customer was Chair of Governors, Eloise Appleby. Her muddy white car was transformed in no time by a team from Purple House, which is dedicated to inspirational Olympian Bradley Wiggins. While the students washed the grime away, she was also able to buy and enjoy a mug of hot chocolate from a mobile drinks service being provided by other ‘Wigginsians’. Mrs Appleby commented: “This is a great way to apply classroom learning from a range of subjects into a ‘real life’ setting. I am impressed that from a standing start just two weeks ago, these little businesses have sprung into life and been well supported by staff and students alike. I have been interested to see how effectively they have used social media to organise their teams and promote their products, especially when we hear so much bad news about young people and their phone ‘addictions’.” The teams have been nothing if not competitive, aiming for business success in order to secure glory for their various houses. Results of the 2017 Apprentices’ Challenge will be declared at the end of term. The money raised goes back to the Friends of Brookfield School, which raises money all year round to help fund additional equipment, opportunities and reward schemes for all students.

Locksheath Pumas
LocksheatH
PUMAS RUFC
Since our last article Locks Heath Pumas rugby club have continued to grow. More senior and youth members have joined our ranks and are enjoying rugby life. All are recognisable around Locks Heath as the senior team members all are presented with a Club Tie after playing in their first competitive league match and our youth players (the Puma Cubs) are presented with their proud Beanie hats which I have seen them wearing with pride. The Club has started to develop a real sense of belonging despite still being split over many locations. The senior men’s sides currently train on different days both at Hook with Warsash school and West Hill Park school. They play competitive league matches at Brookfield School which offers the only rugby playing pitch in our immediate area and socialise currently at the Abshot Community centre.
Chairman George Winch says, “for the last 20 years our nomadic existence had served the Club well, as we were able to offer our members a good standard of rugby packed with a great social atmosphere, for both them and their families. However, with the dramatic growth of the Club this has started to create extra challenges and costs for all our members”. This is highlighted by the cost of hiring training pitches during the week, as well as a rugby pitch to play on each Saturday. Winch continues, “we try where possible to control our costs each week but pitches, fuel and running costs for our transport, medical treatment, kit cleaning and food provided for the opposition and our players each week are just some of the expenditure we have to fund. With no clubhouse of our own we cannot raise revenue across a bar and are limited to only our players membership and sponsorship to generate income.”
Even with the Puma Cubs the high costs are starting to be realised. Youth Chairman Richard Hadley says, “The senior club gave us some start up cash to help us get the initiative up and running and we also secured a great sponsorship deal from local builder PLM Homes Ltd, who are very keen to see the safeguarding of the children maintained. So this money will allow us to fund the training of our coaching staff and build on getting the right equipment for the Puma Cubs. We have tried to keep the membership as competitive as possible as we recognise it will take us at least one season to get ourselves fully operational. Each week we continue to grow and it is great to see the children having great fun.” The Puma Cubs have the children’s well-being in their thoughts by making the training energetic by getting them burning the calories and providing fruit at the end of every session. A hot drink is available for all the parents watching from the touchlines. So what is next? Well the Pumas need your help!! Winch continues “We need to bring all elements of our Club under one roof. The safeguarding of our members is of paramount importance as well as the role the rugby club can play within the local community. We have the growing demand from the area and have a great team of committee members and volunteers to help shape the club for many years to come, but what we need is land!!
52 | The LOOP
contactus@loopmagazine.net
“At the moment we seem to operate as separate clubs due to the various locations we find ourselves using. It would be great to watch a mini / junior player rise through the Club to eventually run out in the 1XV as a senior player. But they will only get this drive if they are around a familiar rugby club atmosphere watching the current 1XV players play some great rugby.” The Pumas need help from Councillors, developers, and land owners, planners, lawyers and anyone who has this project experience and a willingness to help us drive our vision forward. The Pumas have been in discussions with Fareham Borough Council for over 5 years now and still no land can be accommodated towards them. Their local Councillor Sarah Pankhurst is an avid supporter of the request to find a space for the Club. There are various plots of land that used to be marked as recreational land such as down Hook Lane that continue to get overlooked. Drainage on this reclaimed landfill site used to be an issue but the Pumas would look to use the expertise of the RFU (Rugby Football Union, who govern rugby clubs) to help fund and supply modern drainage techniques. But other land must surely be available?
The Pumas need your assistance and would welcome a discussion with anyone who may be able to help drive the club forward. We are not going to forget our history and how the Club has got to this point pretty much on its own, but we now have to recognise the need for help from experienced and dedicated people outside the Club currently, who can help us move to the next level whilst continuing to “bring rugby to the community and the community to rugby”. Follow us at www.locksheathpumas.com Facebook – Locks Heath Pumas Rugby Club.
The need for action is now. Another Rugby World Cup is only 18 months away and the vibe for England to bring home some silverware will start to begin momentum. Funding the type of project we are looking at will require support from not only the Club itself but the RFU, England Rugby, Sport England and the local community, but they need the land to start this dream. So the short term goal is finding a new permanent home, but the long term aim is to re-energise and find network of local sponsors to help us raise monies. Winch finishes by saying, “At this time we can run the club ok through our membership but from time to time we need investment for larger items like portable floodlights as ours after 20 years have just had enough. To help the sponsor we are happy to promote their business through our growing membership, website, social media, promotional stands and any other outlet we can. If you are interested in hearing more about what we could do please contact the Puma Chairman, George Winch (chairman@locksheathpumas.com). contactus@loopmagazine.net

Danny Wilson - Hampshire Strawberry Grower (1930-2018) During the late 1970’s and early 1980’s by his own admission, “he made a lot of money out of Ostara”. As with many good ideas, it wasn’t long before the “big-boys” cottoned on, and prices for late season fruit started to decline as volumes increased. So in 1985, following his second marriage, he decided on a fresh start, selling up in Hampshire and taking on a moribund Apple Farm in Tickenham, near Bristol. With his trademark energy and enthusiasm, he quickly grubbed out most of the trees, replacing them with Soft Fruit and Vegetables, and built up a substantial Farm Shop and PYO business. As might be expected, Strawberries always took pride of place - by this time, he was converted as was the rest of the industry, to the ubiquitous Elsanta.
Danny was born on New Year’s Eve, 1930 in the village of Titchfield, located in the South Hampshire Strawberry belt. At the time of his Birth, around 2000 Acres of Strawberries were grown in the surrounding area, mostly destined for London and other Metropolitan Markets and transported by Train and Road transport. Such was the importance of the industry locally, that School Holidays were scheduled to coincide with the peak harvesting period in early June. (Partly to ensure sufficient labour to harvest the crop, but also a practical measure to avoid large scale absenteeism). Strawberries were therefore part of Danny’s DNA and following National Service and 5 years in the Merchant Navy, he returned to the family home in Locks Heath in 1955. Under the encouragement of his father, Danny started growing the highly prized Royal Sovereign variety on several rented parcels of land. The earliest fruit produced under Glass cloches in mid May, could sell in Covent Garden Market for up to 1 Guinea per 2lb chip (around £25/kg in today’s money). As the strawberry season was very short, an additional income was required and Danny worked as part-time postman, part-time Strawberry grower for a number of years, slowly building up the Strawberry business by taking on extra land and by switching to the higher yielding Redgauntlet variety - which in the mild South Hampshire climate produced a second (late-summer) crop when forced under glass or polythene cloches. By 1967, with 4 acres of production, Danny was able to become a full-time Strawberry grower and continued to build the business, ably supported by wife Pamela, (who he met and married, soon after returning to Locks Heath). Always an innovator, and a keen follower of trials and experimental work done at nearby Efford EHS, Danny was one of the first Hampshire growers to move into raised bed production with trickle irrigation under walk-in tunnels to improve earliness, yields and extend the season of production. Following Britain’s accession to the Common Market in 1973, the high prices Hampshire growers obtained for their early fruit declined, as imports from Italy and Spain rapidly increased. By 1976, Danny realised that the early market was finished for small growers like him, but noticed that there were still good prices for his late season fruit. Realising that the mild Hampshire climate could be utilised at the other end of the season, he started experimenting with “perpetual” (Everbearing) varieties. Initially he grew Aromel, but this was too soft. On seeing the Dutch variety Ostara at Efford EHS, Danny thought, “he might be on to a winner”, and he quickly switched most of his 9 acres of production to this variety. 54 | The LOOP
contactus@loopmagazine.net
In 2010, at the ripe old age of 80, Danny finally decided to retire, and having remarried Pamela 13 years before, he made good on his promise to return to Hampshire. Settling in a nice little bungalow in Locks Heath, only yards from where he first started growing Strawberries, his circle of life was complete. However, not content with a sedentary life, he quickly converted the unproductive lawns and flower beds surrounding the bungalow into a productive fruit and vegetable garden, again with his beloved Strawberries (Elsanta and Redgauntlet) occupying pride of place! As well as being a hard-working and active Fruit Grower, Danny was always interested in politics. Unusually for his chosen profession, he was a life-long Labour supporter. He was an active NFU member most of his farming life too, and represented his fellow growers at Branch and County levels in Hampshire and Avon. For 3 years he also sat as County representative on the NFU Horticultural Committee at Headquarters in London. Danny was a great Horse Racing and Country Music fan. With the Goodwood Festival in August and the Wembley Country Music Festival at Easter being focal points in his calendar. Danny remained extraordinarily fit and active despite his advancing years until being diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia early in 2017. A particularly aggressive variant of Alzheimer’s, it killed this vigorous and energetic man in less than 1 year! Danny Wilson who sadly passed away on 11th January 2018. Danny is survived by wife, Pamela, 3 sons (1 from his second marriage), a daughter and 4 grand-children.

The Legion invites the Nation to say ‘Thank You’ • The Legion is launching a movement to say ‘Thank You’ to a generation who shaped our society
To mark the final year of the World War One centenary, The Royal British Legion is inviting the public to take part in a movement to say ‘Thank You’ to the First World War generation who served, sacrificed and changed our world.
The Legion’s Director General, Charles Byrne, said: “The end of the First World War centenary is a chance for each of us to say thank you in our own ways and in our own words not only to those who gave their lives, but those who returned, those who worked in the factories and on the land, and those who pioneered advances in medicine, technology and the arts in response to the experience of the war.
The charity is calling on the nation to remember not only the 1.2 million British and Commonwealth Armed Forces who lost their lives, but also those - military and civilian - who played their part on the home front and those who returned to build a better life for the benefit of generations to come.
“Whilst the 100th anniversary of the armistice that ended the fighting 100 years ago marks a poignant time of reflection, it is also a time to look forward to the future with the promise to make it a better place. Everyone living in Britain today has a reason to say ‘Thank You’ to this special generation.”
During the last 100 days of the centenary from 8th of August to 11th of November, the Legion is inviting the British public from all cultures and faiths, community groups, schools, companies and sports clubs to join the movement to express their gratitude to those who gave themselves to the war and its aftermath, and rebuilt a better nation from its darkest hour.
The Legion is asking the nation to plan their ‘Thank You’ activity to take place from the 8th of August onwards, while the first day of daylight savings – itself an outcome of the First World War – will be a focus for ‘Thank You’ activity on Sunday October 28th.

Community News Sailor’s new book reveals forgotten Marine’s life A sailor based at HMS Collingwood has revived an overlooked slice of history with a new book highlighting the career of Royal Marine Lieutenant (Lt) George Cutcher. Engineering Technician (Weapons Engineering)1 Richard M Jones specialises in researching and documenting forgotten historical events so was intrigued when a colleague showed him his greatgreat grandfather’s World War One diary. Offering to scan the fragile document and get it bound for the colleague to give as a family Christmas present, Richard realised he wanted to know more about Lt Cutcher especially when he was told of the impressive collection of memorabilia amassed by him over his long life.
George Cutcher’s diary
He was unable to fight in World War II but instead wrote letters to those who’d suffered in combat, drawing on his personal experiences of the stresses of war to raise morale and hope. George retired in 1962 and died aged 87 in February 1967. Richard Jones launched his new book about George’s life “The Diary of a Royal Marine, The Life and Times of George Cutcher” at a recent event in Gosport, attended by members of George’s family. His book is available from shipwreckdata@yahoo.co.uk and all profits will go to the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity, RNRMC.
Some of George Cutcher’s memorabilia and photographs
Speaking of George Cutcher, Richard said, “I’d have loved to have met him, I think he’d have had a lot more stories than I’ve written but I’m proud to say his life is now remembered forever.”
In July 1896 George Cutcher was on his way to join the Royal Navy when a Royal Marines officer persuaded him to enrol in the Marines instead. From there, after basic training at Deal Barracks, George began his career at Spit Head during Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee Review of the Fleet.
Photos courtesy of Mandy Shearing
After serving on several ships across the world, George finally ended up at Dartmouth as a Physical Training Instructor where he managed to save the life of the future King Edward VIII during the latter’s over-ambitious gymnastic display! In July 1915 George served in the Gallipoli Campaign where British Forces alone lost over 21,000 men. Evacuated in January 1916 and promoted to Lieutenant, in June of that year George was then sent straight to another challenging combat zone – the Somme, where he took part in the Offensive. With his mental and physical health deteriorating, George was finally invalided back to the UK in March 1917 and ultimately left the Forces. Keeping his links to the sea, he became attendant of the Time Ball Tower at Deal which, at the time, was an essential aid to marine time-keeping and began his own Freemasonry Lodge – the Globe and Laurel Lodge, globe and laurel being the symbol of the Royal Marines.

Successful Christmas collection by The Lions December was a full-on month for the Meon Valley Lions. Most evenings and Saturdays saw us out and about charity fundraising with Father Christmas, from East and West Meon in the north, down to Knowle in the south. It was great that Santa got to see so many excited children and thanks to some wonderful local support again this year, our Christmas collections raised £4,700.14 for our charity account. We’d like to thank everyone who donated so generously again in 2017 – you can be sure we will be working hard in 2018 to ensure it is spent wisely on local groups and individuals in need. 62 | The LOOP

Each year, what turns up in our collections buckets becomes that little bit more intriguing and bizarre. In amongst the notes and coins, we also amassed an astounding assortment of foreign currency and random items, including US and Canadian dollars, Rupees, Colones (Costa Rica), something unidentifiable from the Middle East, a Gettone-Telefonico phone, some obsolete half-pence pieces, two buttons, a washer and a Philips cross-head screwdriver bit. The usable foreign currency was auctioned amongst the Lions for £15.20 and Lion Roger Morfill is now figuring out how to organise a holiday that takes in Europe, USA, Canada and Costa Rica via India, so he can spend the cash.

Community News Resounding success for ‘Rocky Appeal’
HMS Collingwood welcomes new Commanding Officer
Despite the wind and rain on the day, hundreds attended the Christmas Charity Fayre in aid of the Rocky Appeal earlier this month, raising £2,054.00 for the Da Vinci Robotic Centre at QA Hospital.
Sailors and staff at HMS Collingwood have welcomed their new Commanding Officer, Captain Rob Vitali, to the Fareham establishment.
Jeannette Jones, local business owner and networking professional, worked tirelessly to bring the event to fruition, pooling her resources and calling on fellow networkers to volunteer on the day. A great opportunity for small business to display their wares and create a fabulous display of gifts and products for Christmas. Also wellbeing therapists and make-up artists and stylists, brought that extra special sparkle for customers to enjoy and relax and indulge in. Jeannette commented: “I am so grateful to everyone who braved the weather and came along to the event and for all those who helped with setting up, taking down and taking part in this event.

Masonic Lodge give donation to Childrens Unit A local family have recently handed over a generous donation of £1500 on behalf of the Taverners Masonic Lodge to the Children’s Bubbles Fund at Queen Alexandra Hospital, Cosham. 5 years ago, daughter Savannah suffered a stroke at aged 4. She was admitted to QA where she and her family spent a week in the Children’s Department where she made her recovery. Dad Ben Paterson said: “Our family has visited this Department quite a few times with various ailments over the years, Jacob is quite accident prone for example. I am part of a Masonic Lodge, the Taverners Lodge, and we had two chosen charities for 2017, one of which was The Children’s Bubbles Fund. We did various fundraising events throughout the year like a raffle, race night and ladies’ night. The service at QA has always been exceptional, there’s always plenty for the kids to do, so this money will go towards continuing that.” The Children’s Bubbles Fund resides within Portsmouth Hospitals Charity, based at QA. Portsmouth Hospitals Charity aims to support the patients of Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust by improving existing facilities and by providing additional equipment, supporting research programmes and innovation in the development of services and education to both patients and staff. 64 | The LOOP

An award winning American artist holds an exhibition An award winning American artist holds an exhibition in Sherfieldon-Loddon, Hook this March. Marjorie Collins, who is known for her floral still life paintings, will exhibit 30 of her watercolours at Sherfield Gallery at Sherfield School from Friday 16th March when there is a private view from 6.00 to 7.00pm. The exhibition then runs until Thursday 19th April. Viewing is by appointment from 9.00am to 5.00pm Monday to Friday. “One of my favourite paintings in the exhibition is A Passion for Peppers,” says Marjorie, who lives in Oxford. “It was inspired by the colourful assortment of peppers I saw in the supermarket - in fact when I was looking at them, I ran into a friend who asked ‘are you going to cook or paint these?’ I replied that by the time I would be finished painting them, they would not be fit for cooking or eating.” Marjorie likes to paint reflections and has a large collection of metal bowls. She will often combine one or more with colourful food backed by a complimentary fabric usually geometric in pattern.

Further success was achieved by the authority’s Parks, Open Spaces and Waste & Recycling Services teams, who were ‘highly commended’ at the same event, having made the list of finalists in the Best Overall Performer and Most Improved categories. APSE is the organisation dedicated to promoting quality in the delivery of frontline services to local communities. Its awards are based on independently verified data, assessed against a range of
