Tulip Mania We know spring has arrived when we see the first wave of daffodils fill our gardens of with sunshine yellow swiftly Est. 45 years followed by the colourful hues of the tulip. However, this spring we may find that our tulips do not raise their lovely heads, as they dislike waterlogged soil and with the results of our wet winter, may well have perished. There are so many varieties with the Garden Hybrid group being the most popular and these range in height from 9 inches (23cm) to 30 inches (75cm) including Garden Party (pink edged white), Queen of Sheba (Orange & Red) or La Tulipe Noire (purple/black). Something to remember for this coming autumn if indeed your tulips do not make an appearance this year.

Despite the fact we often believe the tulip originated from Holland this is far from the case and their history is as colourful as they are! It was during the Ottoman Empire in the 1500’s that the tulip was cultivated for the Sultan and there were strict laws forbidding the sale of tulips outside the capital city. It was only when a Curator fled to the Netherlands to escape religious persecution and took with him a great collection of tulip seeds and planted them in the Leiden Botanical Gardens that tulips became linked with the country. Today the Dutch export 1.2 billion bulbs annually.

Also, four hundred ago this month saw what was called ‘Tulip Mania’ on Dutch soil when the price of tulips reached manic heights to suddenly collapse. This episode is generally known as the first ‘economic bubble’ as many investors suffered from the fall in stock and as a consequence Dutch commerce took a tumble affecting both the English and German markets. A colourful history indeed!

The Legion invites the Nation to say ‘Thank You’ The Legion is launching a movement to say ‘Thank You’ to a generation who shaped our society.

Activity to take place in the last 100 days from 8th August to 11th November.

To mark the final year of the World War One centenary, The Royal British Legion is inviting the public to take part in a movement to say ‘Thank You’ to the First World War generation who served, sacrificed and changed our world.

The charity is calling on the nation to remember not only the 1.2 million British and Commonwealth Armed Forces who lost their lives, but also those - military and civilian - who played their part on the home front and those who returned to build a better life for the benefit of generations to come.

During the last 100 days of the centenary from 8th of August to 11th of November, the Legion is inviting the British public from all cultures and faiths, community groups, schools, companies and sports clubs to join the movement to express their gratitude to those who gave themselves to the war and its aftermath, and rebuilt a better nation from its darkest hour.

The Legion’s Director General, Charles Byrne, said: “The end of the First World War centenary is a chance for each of us to say thank you in our own ways and in our own words not only to those who gave their lives, but those who returned, those who worked in the factories and on the land, and those who pioneered advances in medicine, technology and the arts in response to the experience of the war.

“Whilst the 100th anniversary of the armistice that ended the fighting 100 years ago marks a poignant time of reflection, it is also a time to look forward to the future with the promise to make it a better place. Everyone living in Britain today has a reason to say ‘Thank You’ to this special generation.”

The Legion is asking the nation to plan their ‘Thank You’ activity to take place from the 8th of August onwards, while the first day of daylight savings – itself an outcome of the First World War – will be a focus for ‘Thank You’ activity on Sunday October 28th.

The act of saying ‘Thank You’ is personal to every individual, therefore to encourage the greatest involvement the Legion will suggest a variety of ways of participating in ‘Thank You’ activity and will provide ideas and share people’s planned activity throughout the year.

In 2018, the Legion will ask the general public to use their extra hour from daylight saving time to say ‘Thank You’. Daylight saving time was introduced by Germany and then the UK during 1916 to minimise artificial lighting and save fuel for the war effort, so it feels particularly relevant for the ‘Thank You’ movement.

Legacies born out of the First World War include: • The greater role of women in the workforce and public life which contributed to the first women gaining the right to vote in 1918 • Men without property were also given the right to vote in the same year • Advancements in medicine such as blood banks, x-rays and reconstructive surgery • Development of everyday products such as the wrist watch, the trench coat, or the humble teabag • Inspiration for arts and letters which gave us the great war poets and compositions by Elgar, Vaughan Williams, and Holst even JRR Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy was inspired by his service on the Somme • The birth of the poppy as a symbol of sacrifice and of hope – it was the subject of John McCrae’s poem In Flanders Fields, written following the Second Battle of Ypres in 1915 The Legion was founded in the aftermath of the First World War and provided a powerful national voice with a local footprint of social clubs and branches. It campaigned for jobs and housing, provided benefit to disabled veterans, widows, and fatherless children, and led the nation in organising Remembrance, as it still does today.

The Royal British Legion’s work is encapsulated in its motto: Live On – to the memory of the fallen and the future of the living. The Legion is the nation’s biggest Armed Forces charity providing care and support to all members of the British Armed Forces past and present and their families. Nursery Children Delight Sailors with Cake Sale Personnel across HMS Collingwood flocked to sample some sweet treats at a recent Cake Sale held to raise funds for Woodentots, the Base’s on-site nursery.

Sailors and civilians alike were invited to choose between such goodies as Dutch Apple Cake, Victoria Sponge, chocolate chip cookies and many more. Some of the older children had helped to make the cakes whilst the younger members of the nursery attracted customers with loud chants of “Buy Our Cakes!” Thanks to their combined efforts the sale raised an impressive £180.

The money raised from these regular sales goes straight into nursery funds, allowing the purchase not only of new equipment, but also funding Family Days. These play an important role in bringing busy military parents and children together for fun days out and visits to local attractions. They also

provide a social network for children whose parents may be drafted away from home.

Lieutenant Jenny Kedge explained, “Recent Family Fun Days have included taking the children to a farm and also for Soft Play sessions. It’s a great opportunity for parents and children to get together with their peers. We hold these cake sales every term and they’re always hugely successful because of the amazing support we receive from all the staff at HMS Collingwood.”

At present the nursery is setting up an IT lab for the children, to allow them the opportunity to speak directly to parents deployed elsewhere via Skype and FaceTime and proceeds from the cake sale will help fund this equipment.

Ways to say goodbye….

My father passed away 7 years ago and, despite his son being a funeral director, our family still had very little clue as to what he wanted at his service. So what chance does everyone else have?

It’s not an easy topic of conversation, but most families should have a discussion, at some point, to decide on what sort of funeral they would prefer. It might be a very brief conversation at the pub ‘I would rather be buried/cremated’… or even ‘ I really don’t care, I wont be around’ but at least it’s a start. Don’t underestimate how many times we hear from bereaved families that they have been left no instructions.

There is no legal obligation to hold a funeral service at all. But here are some ideas to get you thinking A religious funeral: Whatever your religion, the customs and traditions of a familiar structured service can offer great peace of mind in your place of worship. There is flexibility to add personal touches such as musical or spoken tributes. If you haven’t been to church for a while, it doesn’t matter. They are well suited to large gatherings and the service has no time limit.

A non or ‘less’ religious funeral: In recent years funerals have edged away from the ‘very traditional’. The emphasis is on the life of the person, not the beliefs of the person officiating. The service will reflect their character through words, music and personal reminiscences.

Green and woodland funerals: These are environmentally friendly alternative to traditional burials. Biodegradable coffins are used in woodland settings and a tree or wooden plaques replace traditional headstones. A good example is The South Downs Natural Burial Site in East Meon.

Burial at Sea: While not widely encouraged, burials can be performed off the western end of the Isle of Wight. We will handle all the paperwork for you and its not as expensive as one might imagine.

Crematorium Service: This can be either religious or non-religious and you can nominate your own minister/celebrant, or we will do this for you. Local crematoriums include Havant, Portchester, West End, Southampton and Romsey. They vary in price and appearance.

Leaving instructions makes it straightforward. Unlike my dad, please give your family a clue.

Petanque Players raise funds for Poppy Appeal Each year the club raises funds for the Poppy Appeal, mainly through a petanque competition held on Remembrance Sunday which attracts players from many local clubs and even some from as far away as Wales.

This was the highest amount raised yet, but the Club is aiming to do even better this November, as it will be the actual centenary of Armistice Day. Cobbetts Boules Club, based at Burridge Sports and Social Club, have presented a generous donation of £800 to the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal. The club was pleased to welcome Daimon Brown, Poppy Appeal Organiser for Hedge End and Botley, to receive the cheque and talk to the members about many ways the money may be spent to support ex-servicemen and their families.

Taste of the South Festival Returns for 2018

Citizens Advice Q&A

Taste of the South Festival returns to Dorset for a second year this July and is set to showcase the region’s top talent, variety of food and drink, art, culture and artisan products. The two-day festival, which will be held at Chapel Gate, Christchurch, over the weekend of July 21st – 22nd, celebrates all things local from across the entire South of England.

Lesley Rose, Advice Services Manager for Citizens Advice Winchester District offers advice on how to tackle damp issues with a private landlord.

Entertainment, live music, tastings and award-winning chef demonstrations, will ensure wide-ranging ‘great day out’ appeal for families, visitors and locals at the start of the summer holidays.

Q. I live in a privately rented two-bedroom house and the damp in the living room is aggravating my three-year-old daughter’s asthma. I’ve told my landlord but she’s not taking action.

What can I do?

A. Resolving damp issues can be difficult - especially as the cause of the problem is not always obvious. Also, by raising any disrepair complaint to a private landlord it’s important to realise that there is a risk of retaliatory eviction.

First, make sure you’re not doing anything that could be contributing to the damp, such as drying clothes indoors or blocking vents. Once that’s done, you have two potential routes available.

The first is to report the problem to the Environmental Health department at your local authority. This route is best if you’re unsure what’s causing the damp, but it’s also an option if you think your landlord is responsible.

Tell your council the damp is causing your daughter’s asthma to worsen and provide evidence, including letters from your GP, photos of the damp, and a copy of your tenancy agreement.

Set to tantalise and inspire, the ingredients are being prepared for an even bigger and better event, building upon 2017’s inaugural success at Poole Park. Over 13,000 visitors attended the event last May and featured 80 + exhibitors.

Potential exhibitors – producers and craftspeople from Cornwall to West Sussex – are encouraged to secure their places as soon as possible.

The festival is organised by Dorset-based ROUTEpr, who are adept at creating interest on a local and national level using an imaginative media mix to connect participants with their audiences.

Jackie Phillipson, Taste of the South organiser and co-founder of ROUTEpr, said: “Taste of the South is a festival for everyone, from start-ups and SMEs to award-winning producers and artisans. It offers excellent opportunities to showcase high quality products, sell and sample wares and engage with other like-minded talented professionals”.

“In the food and artisan areas you will find the best in fresh and finished produce plus independently crafted, beautifully designed gifts and gadgets, often made by hand over several generations.

These items are unlikely to be found on the mass market nor in department stores – you will be buying something unique, built to last.”

The local authority can issue an awareness notice, which tells your landlord there’s a hazard in the home and what she needs to do to fix it, although it does not require her to take action. The authority can also serve the more serious improvement notice, which requires your landlord to carry out the work and also offers you some protection from retaliatory eviction.

Alternatively, you could take her to court. Your landlord may be held responsible for repairing the damp but this will depend on the cause - such as a broken heater or window - and the terms of your tenancy agreement.

If she is responsible, the court can grant an injunction and possibly award compensation. Seek advice from us before going down this route because the legal process can be complex. You may also be entitled to legal aid.

Crab toasts Serves 4-8 500g fresh brown crab meat 40ml lime juice 6 drops Tabasco 1/2

- 1 tbsp mayonnaise

Salt and black pepper 8 thick slices of dense white bread such as sourdough or Poilâne Clarified butter, for spreading 1 tbsp chives, chopped A pinch of fleur de sel or Maldon sea salt Handful of watercress

Method Mix together the crab meat, lime juice and Tabasco and stir well. Now add the mayonnaise.

How much depends on the mixture - if it’s quite wet, add only 1/2 tbsp; if it is thick, add 1 full tbsp. Season with salt and pepper, to taste. Then put in the fridge until you’re ready to serve.

Just before serving, lightly brush the slices of bread with the clarified butter, then either chargrill on both sides or place in a hot oven (about 200°C/400°F/Gas Mark 6) for about 5 minutes, to toast.

Spread the crab mixture onto the grilled or toasted bread, sprinkle with chives and fleur de sel, and serve immediately.

Push the Boat Out this May There’s something for everyone as RYA Push the Boat Out gives you the chance to try sailing and windsurfing for free or low cost this May. If you’re on the lookout for something completely different, whether you’re bored of the gym and want some outdoor health and fitness, are a bit of an adrenaline junkie, need something to switch your brain off from everyday life or simply want a sociable new activity you can enjoy with your partner or family, pop down to your local sailing club or centre during Push The Boat Out and have a go.

What’s it all about?

Throughout May, Push the Boat Out 2018 promises even more opportunities for people of all ages to discover the wonderful world of sailing and windsurfing.

Last year more than 30,000 people got out on the water at venues up and down the country and over 7,500 signed up for more activities, with many becoming members of their local clubs.

No matter what your experience, if you turn up to a Push the Boat Out taster session you’ll get that chance to sail or windsurf under the watchful eye of an experienced sailor or instructor. If you’re a beginner they’ll show you the ropes and tell you what you need to get going. They make everything easy to understand and get you ready to have a go.

There’s no need to worry about the equipment, everything needed is provided by the venue including a buoyancy aid or life jacket.

All you need to do is turn up with some warm clothes, a pair of old shoes and a waterproof jacket in case it rains.

“Many people don’t know about the opportunities that are available in their local area to get out on the water and try sailing or windsurfing, or they may think it is too expensive or they need their own equipment. Push the Boat Out aims to prove this is not the case”, explains RYA Director of Sport Development Alistair Dickson.

All ages welcome The beauty of Push the Boat Out is that the events are open to people of all ages and abilities.

Jean Hughes is 86 and was invited by friends to her local sailing club’s free Push the Boat Out open day last May. She loved her sailing tasters so much she signed up for a two-day RYA Start Sailing course spending the rest of her summer Saturday’s learning the ropes and improving her skills.

Her only previous sailing experience came when her family brought a small dinghy which they put on the roof of the car and took to Bala Lake to try out it out. However that attempted didn’t go to plan and they had to row the boat back to shore!

Jean admits her experience this year has been a little more successful. “Learning to sail was on my ‘bucket list’. I have always enjoyed new challenges and thought sailing would open up a new world of experiences. It is certainly living up to my expectations and I am really enjoying getting out on the water, especially being able to ‘lean out’ when going fast!

“I have gone to the club on Saturdays when possible and found the people there very friendly. I’m so thankful God has given me good health so that I have been able to try this with help and encouragement from everyone at the sailing club.”

Nina Harrison, who lives in Dunblane, also started to sail at a Push the Boat Out Open Day in Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park. Although she had no previous sailing experience the 11 year old got bitten by the bug so quickly she spent the rest of this year taking part in junior training at her club.

She has made such rapid progress she attended her first RYA Scotland Zone Championships at the end of September and has since taken part in IOCA training at her local club and two RYAS winter academies.

Nina said: “I really enjoy learning and sailing in high winds. I even sailed in the tail of Hurricane Irma, which was the highlight of my week and an amazing experience! One of my favourite things to do out on the water is hiking and racing because it’s always pushing you to your limits.

“I think if I keep up my hard work I will be able to get onto the British team as sailing is my new passion. If I had it my way I would spend all my time on the water practicing.”

Monster trucks to roar at the HMS Sultan Summer Show 2018 Monster Trucks ‘Big Pete’ and ‘The Grim Reaper’ will be roaring into life as part of an action packed Father’s Day weekend for all at the HMS Sultan Summer Show 2018.

Taking place on Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 June, the Show regularly attracts around 25,000 visitors from across the South for a day packed full of high quality Arena Entertainment, interactive games and displays, craft and steam fairs and an enormous funfair. In addition, the 2018 Show will include a huge Fun and Games Arena packed full of free activities to enjoy.

Appearing alongside the Monster Trucks in the Main Arena will be Team Green Rockets Children’s Motorcycle Display Team.

Performing adrenaline-fuelled stunts, this talented troop of young boys & girls will astound you with their airborne stunts & formation riding performance. Local youngsters from the Royal Naval Volunteer Cadet Corps will compete in Field Gun Competition and, in keeping with the best of Naval Traditions, the award winning HMS Sultan Volunteer Band will be marching to a music medley. If that wasn’t enough a procession of classic steam vehicles will bring back memories of halcyon days.

The free Fun and Games Arena will offer a great mix of modern and traditional games and activities including inflatables, a petting zoo, Creepy Crawlies and exotic creatures and inflatables.

2018 is the Year of Engineering and HMS Sultan, as the home of Royal Navy Marine and Air Engineering training, will be looking to celebrate this at the Show. There will be a variety of hands-on Science, Technology, Enigineering and Mathematics (STEM) based activities including interactive displays of static aircraft and military hardware.

Due to the searing heat, and the abundance of mining equipment, people have built their dwellings underground to keep them cool during the hot summer days.

Located about one hour’s drive, north of Brisbane and just a little inland from the Sunshine Coast, this park is a truly amazing paradise for nature lovers. There are hiking tracks, ranging in difficulty, leading through the forests to various lookouts, which once your reach them offer panoramic views from craggy volcanic peaks that tower above the surrounding landscape.

The mountains are located in the traditional lands of the Gubbi Gubbi people, and Aboriginal legend says the mountains are all members of a family. Once you’ve finished hiking and exploring the area it’s a quick drive to the gorgeous beaches of the Sunshine Coast.

Litchfield National Park Just south of Darwin this national park is filled with things to see and do ranging from Ranger guided tours and activities, swimming in local swimming holes, hikes, camping, 4wd tours, and much more. With stunning waterfalls, gorges, and viewing platforms, this park is truly a treat for the eyes.

Broome Located in the North West, it is somewhat isolated but well worth the making the effort to visit. The dry season is the time to visit and there is plenty to see and do from visiting The Horizontal Falls, riding Camels or taking Pearl Tour, to just relaxing on the

Steamship Shieldhall preparing for first weekend of sailings!

Southampton’s own heritage steamship, SS Shieldhall, is preparing for the 2018 sailing season. Shortly setting out for Falmouth for her biennial Dry Docking, Shieldhall will – if all goes to plan – return looking spick and span, ready for a busy programme that will take in some 24 sailings out of Southampton and Poole.

Currently listed as the No 1 ‘Thing to Do’ on TripAdvisor for Southampton, there has never been a better time to plan a cruise on Shieldhall. 2017 saw the completion of a £1.4 million HLF refit, including essential maintenance carried out to the hull, a refurbished Saloon and new interpretation. For 2018, Shieldhall will commence sailings over the late May Bank Holiday weekend. Highlights of the programme include sailings scheduled to witness the spectacle of the Round the Island Race and the Cowes Fireworks. Sailings will continue at intervals until mid-September, including two docks trips over the Heritage Open Days Weekend. This year marks 30 years since Shieldhall was taken into preservation by the charity that still operate her today, the Solent Steam Packet Limited. All crew on Shieldhall are unpaid volunteers, who look to keep the magic of steam at sea alive for future generations!

Shieldhall’s first sailing will be on Sat 26th May, with a Southampton Docks Cruise between 4.00pm – 6.00pm. On Sun 27th May, Shieldhall welcomes Titanic enthusiasts aboard for a 3hr cruise (3.00pm – 6.00pm), retracing Titanic’s trip down Southampton Water with references to the ‘New York Incident’ and the impact the White Star Liner had on Southampton. Guest author Ann Roberts will give a presentation on Titanic’s Captain E J Smith in the Shieldhall Saloon, and visitors are welcome to see Shieldhall’s steam driven steering gear, very similar in nature to that employed on the Titanic. On all cruises, Shieldhall will pass close to the mighty cruise ships berthed in the Docks, with the afternoon cruises seeing the departure of the cruise ships, always the opportunity to sound the Shieldhall whistle as she passes by!

Shieldhall is the largest operational, passenger-cargo steam ship in Britain. A member of the National Historic Fleet she serves as a sea going tribute to Britain’s maritime heritage. Exciting new education initiatives announced in Southampton Sarah Stannard, City College Principal, said: “Our aim is to develop the highest-quality and most inspiring education offer we can for our students as part of our ‘education quarter’. I believe the work we are undertaking will yield real value for our students whilst strengthening our bond with Solent University.”

An example of the collaboration between the College and University is already in place, with the University’s Warsash School of Maritime Science and Engineering operating partially out of new facilities at City College’s campus in St Mary’s.

New plans will build on this, with the introduction of a mentoring scheme where students from the University will mentor students from City College to encourage more Southampton students into education, and Solent is also guaranteeing an interview for every City College student who applies.

A decision has been made regarding future partnership arrangements between City College and Southampton Solent University, as plans progress to develop the city’s education offer.

Solent University and City College have been exploring a variety of options as part of a shared ambition to develop new opportunities for learners of all ages. One of the options considered was a formal merger but instead the decision has been made in favour of a new closer working partnership between the two institutions.

The focus has been moved to continuing a closer alignment to ensure local students can access the education, training and skills they need to further their careers. This will involve sharing facilities, teaching expertise and creating a smooth transition for students who wish to go on to University.

With the changing of the seasons, the inevitable influx of brand new shiny, spangly trends hits the high streets, filtered down from the runways of high fashion houses such as Chanel, Dior, Prada and many more.

Quite often, these trends will last but a season, quickly moving to the back of our wardrobes, likely never to be seen again. But then, there are the times where a look emerges that, when reflected on, is clearly recycled from the past. And why is this? Because inevitably, it’s a look that will work.

This is the case for textures because, at its essence, it’s a trend that is so versatile it can be applied to literally any shape, colour or style of garment.

Consider a biker jacket in classic black leather.

It’s a style staple for sure, but in moss green suede a la H&M, it becomes a modernised Mulberry-esque statement piece able to elevate any outfit. The nap of the suede gives a naturally velvety variation of colour to the garment which reflects light and makes movement shimmer, plus it looks uber luxurious.

Another easy way to add texture is with fringing. The upsides of fringing are endless, whilst the only real downside is the extra awareness required when riding escalators, so as not to get caught in the mechanism (it’s a thing). Zara’s beaded top is an excellent example of this.

The wide mesh means you’ll need a vest or t-shirt underneath, but it’s a wonderful way to add real interest to an otherwise plain outfit. If the clicketyclack of beads get annoying, however, consider Topshop’s sequin fringe jacket. The far more lightweight fringes flutter rather than swing, catching the light as they move. Be warned though, this isn’t one for the introverts.

For a more subtle flirt with fringing, try River Island’s emerald green bejewelled fringed box bag. It’s big enough for a phone, purse and keys, and not a lot else, but you won’t mind the limited space when you look down and catch sight of your jewellery-box bag sparkling back up at you. Even better, it would elevate any simple outfit in a flash. If it feels a little ostentatious for you,

consider a furry bag - the purse equivalent of a pet.

Fluffy as they come and in a romantic pinky-red, it’s one not to be missed from New Look.

Some Very Very Important Persons visit Botley’s newest Restaurant

The Old Mill Restaurant in Botley was honoured to be chosen

by Project 71 and 15 WWII veterans as the venue to hold their annual reunion on St. Patrick’s Day. The veterans who saw action in Dunkirk, Arnhem, Bastogne, Normandy Germany and Japan enjoyed a very special Irish themed lunch.

Also present was Derek (a Spitfire pilot) and Molly (a Naval Officer) who was part of a very “special” team from Bletchley Park who was also sent to Washington as part of her wartime service.

We have all seen films such as Enigma, A Bridge to Far, Saving Private Ryan, Battle of Britain and the TV series - Band of Brothers, but the people in this group who came to The Old Mill all experienced and lived through the challenging real life events from WWII that these films are based on.

During the lunch the menu included a very special Irish stew, followed by a Bailey’s cheesecake and of course some 12 year old Irish Whisky (some in coffee’s but a fair few not..) and there was of course a request for rum from the naval contingent…

After lunch there was some music provided by a duo who played the violin and guitar, at which point a few of the veterans showed us a few moves that would put many youngsters to shame.

The veterans where then taken round the restaurant set in the Old Mill building by James (one of the owners who is also a P71 volunteer) where he pointed out the historical features such as the waterfall that used to power the mill wheel, the magnificent British Ruston engine and the mill stone housings that are still predominant features in the dining rooms.

One of the group regaled us with a story of how in WWII, just before the invasion on D-Day there was a line of tanks parked on Mill Hill in Botley all the way up toward Shedfield and two of the tank crews at the time painted the numbers 91 & 92 on the wall as you head out of Botley. Apparently the numbers are still there, albeit very faint. Two of the veterans did make mention of a possible night mission to touch them up, but did say they might wait until the weather was a bit warmer.

At one point in the afternoon there was a Soldier, a Sailor and a Spitfire pilot sitting together sharing their stories with the Old Mill team and the young waitresses were enthralled.

All in all we were honoured, privileged and proud to have been able to share an afternoon with this wonderful group in our beautiful local restaurant.

Project 71 is a not for profit group that is run by volunteers and exists to provide support for our local veterans who come from Hampshire. They do not have huge funds or celebrity support but undertake lots of fundraising activity to take the veterans on trips to Belgium, Holland and Normandy each year to let them pay their respects to fallen comrades as well as organising

events much closer to home, visiting and transporting anyone who needs assistance and providing equipment to aid the vets day to day. Charity Chefs’ Challenge On Friday 1st June, food lovers have the opportunity to enjoy culinary theatre at its best as they watch award-winning chefs compete to impress. The emphasis of the evening is on light-hearted fun, involvement and learning how to create impressive food in minutes. Witness tricks of the trade and theatrical food magic.

MC, Chef Patron Alex Aitken from The Jetty will expertly guide us through the evening. Raising the temperature in the on-stage kitchens will be Executive Chef, Craig McColm and Daniel Noonan from The Jetty Southampton Harbour Hotel.

Executive Chef Andy Mackenzie and Season’s cookery school manager, chef Sylvain Gachot will be representing Lainston House hotel. TV’s favourite chocolate master Mark Tilling, winner of Bake Off: Crème de la Crème, will complete the evening. Chas, a sponsor and pie lover has challenged the chefs to each bring along their best pie, to be tasted and judged by sponsors Accord accountancy, Audi Southampton, Compass Wealth Management, Fisher & Paykel, The Myers Touch, David Mellor Jewellers, Airways Optical and Concorde Insurance Brokers, Ringwood Brewery will be on stage advising on which ales to drink with the pies.

Expect audience participation, Q&A’s and a few lucky winners will be eating at the chefs’ table.

The venue for the evening will be Thornden Hall, a purpose built performance Hall with comfortable tiered seating, large stage and screen for detailed close up shots of the Chefs’ work. The Hall is within Thornden School, Chandler’s Ford SO53 2DW. There’s ample free parking and a cash bar.

The audience start their evening with pre show nibbles and tastings served from 6.45pm, including a welcome glass of Prosecco or Ringwood Brewery ale, delicious canapés from Vanilla catering and tastings from Waitrose. 7.30pm show, a complimentary New Forest ice cream will be served in the interval, and all for £25.

Bright young sparks rise to Royal Navy Engineering Challenge Youngsters from across the UK gathered at HMS Sultan, Gosport recently in order to compete in The Royal Navy Engineering Challenge - Exercise Clean Sweep to mark the Year of Engineering 2018.

Held in partnership with University Technical Colleges (UTCs) and affiliated employers, schools, Babcock and BAE Systems, the Challenge which involved building a remote-controlled vessel capable of recovering objects on the seabed aimed to inspire young people to engage further with science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects.

75 teams competed in the Challenge, with several of the teams enjoying the opportunity to experience 24 hours of Naval life, including a night on board HMS Bristol.

This year’s Challenge was affiliated with the aircraft carrier HMS Prince of Wales, sister ship to HMS Queen Elizabeth, the Royal Navy’s newest and largest-ever warship.

The task was to build a remote-controlled vessel that can recover objects on the sea floor that need to be removed before the ship arrives in port.

With the event falling in the Year of Engineering, the event gave everyone involved the chance to demonstrate how organisations across the engineering industry, such as the Royal Navy, Babcock and BAE Systems are encouraging young people into STEM careers.

Outside of competition itself, the youngsters were given the opportunity to enjoy several STEM-related displays and activities including tours of the Establishment’s facilities such as helicopters, gas turbines and diesel engines.

Prizes were awarded across six different categories between groups aged 14-16, 16-18 for apprentices from industry aged 18-24, with teams Extracting Compass from UTC Swindon, Impact from HAE UTC and Eaton by a Shark from Eaton Aerospace Systems overall winners in the respective categories.

UTC Portsmouth which opened in September, entered six teams in the competition for the first time. Year 10 student Parys Reid said: “Every other time trial that we have done we have kind of just sank and our design has changed a lot since we started. We have kind of ended up with a double decker of a boat with our electrics at the bottom and our crane on top.”

“We only opened in September and this has been the first opportunity that we have had to see what the other UTCs are like and it’s been really interesting. I hope we can get to take part again next year.”

Freya Long, Design and Tech Engineering Teacher at UTC Portsmouth said: “I think they’ve enjoyed what they’ve done.

There’s lots of problem solving that’s been going on and they’ve tried to do quite a lot and might have benefited from doing more testing, but most teams have stayed afloat.”

“I’m so proud of them and it’s given us a lot to work on for next year and looking to see what lots of other teams have been able to produce has been really useful.”

When such incidences happen, we might think ‘I’m losing my mind’ and question whether this is the start of dementia, when in fact it can be simple factors such as tiredness, stress, certain illnesses and medication that can cause our memory to not work as well as it should. Even not having enough fluid on board can make a difference in how we function and think.

These symptoms are likely to feel scary but having early knowledge and understanding empowers us to make choices and decisions over the issues that matter to us. An early diagnosis means developed treatments to slow the progression of the dementia can be initiated, thus enabling the person living with the condition (along with their families and friends) time to, most importantly, enjoy life, adjust to the diagnosis and plan for the future.

Sarisbury Sparks Allstars Netball Club

A fine charity catch!!

It was a cold, grey and very damp morning that greeted the Meon Valley Lions recently, as they turned out to organise the 43rd Charity Ford Open Fishing Festival, on Weston Shore.

In its heyday, over two hundred fishermen took part in this fishing festival and the pitches extended from Weston Shore in the west, right round to the Hamble in the east. The Ford transit plant has since closed, but Peter Oates and members of the Ford Sports and Social Club have worked hard with the support of the Transport and General Workers Union, to keep the competition alive. It is still a popular event amongst the sea-angling community and we attracted a large group of plucky sea-anglers again this year, including 74 senior and 4 juniors.

If the Lions and fishermen found the conditions a little challenging, it didn’t seem to adversely affect the fishing itself, with one of the most successful catches landed in recent years. In the last five years of competition, no junior has caught a single fish.

This year however, two were successful and Charlie Cramer and Matthew Tay were both awarded prizes of rods and reels for their efforts.

Sarisbury Sparks Allstars Netball Club, based in Sarisbury Green, Southampton, was founded in September 2017 by Karen Watkins and Nikki Dunning; and are affiliated with the England Netball Association.

Dezign Ideaz Ltd, a local product design company that has developed several sports equipment products, has helped to fund the start-up and currently sponsors the club through the 2017/2018 season.

Although the club is currently setup to coach under 12’s, Nikki and Karen have big plans for the club’s future and are hoping to secure further funding to enable the club to grow and extend to other age groups, as well as offer ‘Back to Netball’ and ‘Walking Netball for Adults’.

The club’s philosophy is to encourage netball players to enjoy the friendship, social aspects and competition of the game - emphasising skill development, team participation and commitment.

Karen and Nikki are committed to developing players at all levels of skill and experience and have both been awarded their UKCC Level 2 Coaching qualification.

The Allstars have had a team compete in the All About Netball Junior Winter League, where they proudly finished in third place for their age division. Not bad at all for their very first season playing together! They are hoping to do even better in the Summer League!

They are keen to grow their netball family and always welcome enthusiastic new players.

This charity event raised £822, a sum the Lions will now round up to £1,000 for donation to the Winchester based hospice, Naomi House and Jacksplace. It’s a tradition that we channel the proceeds of the Fishing Festival to this deserving charity and this year’s contribution takes the total collected through the fishing festival down the years, to in excess of £45,000.

Houghton Lodge and Gardens in Stockbridge is looking forward to a season of exciting art exhibitions featuring professional artists as it continues its collaboration with Creative Coverage, the Hampshire arts organisation.

The first exhibition from April to June will feature floral, still life and fungi paintings by Ingrid Skoglund, George Paul Sainsbury and Peter Thwaites as well as hanging glass pictures by Susan Purser Hope, elected Chair of the Contemporary Glass Society.

Then from June to August will feature photographs by Sarah MacDonald and paintings by Sara Barnes, Nancy Jones, Michael Jevon and Pat Regnart.

The final exhibition of the year from August to October will feature paintings by Jan Gay, an elected member of the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, Stuart Stanley, a council member of The Society of Graphic Fine Art, Sue Colyer and Nerissa Deeks.

CPRE Hampshire Launches Countryside Awards 2018

CPRE Hampshire has announced the launch of its Countryside Awards for 2018, with new incentives for businesses, groups and individuals to enter and champion the work they do standing up for the countryside that makes Hampshire so unique. The Countryside Awards are designed to celebrate our beautiful, diverse and thriving countryside and all those who sustain it so that that everyone can value and enjoy it. The spirit of this can be found in a diverse range of projects, buildings, businesses, services and social enterprises – from large to grass roots level. To date over 100 projects have been recognised, since the inception of the awards 11 years ago. The Countryside Awards - sponsored by Southern Co-op – are divided into four categories, each supported by its own sponsor. NEW this year is ‘Hampshire’s Choice’. For the very first time, the public will be asked to vote, from all the finalists, who they think should win a cash sum of £500, giving potential applicants even more incentive to get their award submissions in.

Sales boom for 2018 Wickham Festival The 2018 Wickham Festival looks set to be the most successful yet.

With chart-toppers Squeeze confirmed as the prime headline act, tickets have been selling fast for the August 2nd-5th event in the picturesque Hampshire village.

Rock legend Steve Harley has been confirmed as the main attraction on the opening night, Thursday August 2 along with the South and the Dhol Foundation.

They join Show of Hands and Kate Rusby on Friday August 3 and folk icon Richard Thompson who closes the event on the Sunday night backed by the Undertones, the Blues Band and the Red Hot Chilli Pipers.

And that exciting bill has prompted a rush for weekend tickets which have been selling exceptionally well.

Land Rover BAR continue journey to bring the Cup home Land Rover BAR, Britain’s America’s Cup team lead by Sir Ben Ainslie, are now back out racing on the global sailing circuit. The senior team has joined up with Tony Langley’s British TP52 team, ‘Gladiator’ to race as ‘Land Rover BAR Gladiator’ in the 52 SUPER SERIES - one of the world’s leading high performance monohull race series that will also be contested by other America’s Cup teams from Italy and USA. The 52 SUPER SERIES comprises events in Croatia (23rd – 27th May and 20th -24th June) followed by Cascais, Portugal (17th – 21st July), Mallorca (21st – 25th August) and Valencia (18th – 22nd May).

The team will also take part in two home racing events, Round the Island Race (7th July) and Lendy Cowes Week (4th – 11th August) alongside a Spring / Summer training programme on the Solent.

“The return to monohull racing for the America’s Cup means that the 52 SUPER SERIES will be great racing for our sailing team.

Meanwhile, the Land Rover BAR Academy kicked off their 2018 season with a fourth place finish in Muscat, Oman. The youth team will race in seven further events this year - in the ‘GC32’, a foiling 32 foot multihull, with a home event in Cardiff in August 2018 Alongside the racing programme, Land Rover BAR will continue their journey to bring the Cup home. The 36th America’s Cup takes place early 2021 in Auckland, with global World Series events in the lead up, starting in the summer of 2019. The final class rule for the new boat - a high-performance foiling mono-hull – will be released to the teams within the next month. The rule outlines the design specification of the boat and the expectation is these boats will be as fast, or faster than the America’s Cup Class raced in the last America’s Cup and a huge technical challenge, requiring 12 crew to sail.

How to Take Flight Foiling has taken sailing to the next level and now, thanks to the RYA, it’s more accessible than ever.

It’s hard to describe the moment you take off for the first time across the waves in a boat or on a board.

Instructor Sommer Bailey has a go, explaining, ‘When you first take off, your head’s all over the place and it doesn’t feel real - it feels absolutely amazing.’

And where foiling was once the exclusive playground of professional sailors and racers; the kit, locations and even instructors are now in place to help a wider range of sailors and windsurfers take flight.

RYA Chief Instructor for Dinghy and Windsurfing Amanda Van Santen is at the forefront of this evolution, having spotted the need to bring foiling to mainstream sailing with three new pilot courses.

RYA First Flights, Sustained Flights and Performance Flights are designed to teach the fundamentals of foiling with a clear pathway for those looking to learn, progress or enhance their skills.

Amanda explains: ‘I wanted to make foiling more accessible and through our RYA Training Centres delivering safe tuition, I believe we are now perfectly placed to do this. Our network of participating centres, who have invested in specific equipment, provide an easier and more accessable route through; correctly set up kit; and trained Instructors in a safe environment. In as little as two hours you may have potentially experienced your first foiling take-off.’

Is foiling for me?

If you can sail a laser in a good breeze, perhaps the skill level of around RYA Level 2/3, you can learn to SailFoil.

Equally, if you can blast in the footstraps, you can learn to WindFoil. A good Intermediate is someone who can plane, adjust stance to the conditions, make effective use of the footstraps and has all the key skills to replicate that on the foil.

What conditions do you need?

Depending on the chosen equipment, conditions and technique, some boards and boats can lift in wind as light as 6-7 knots.

However, with both sail and windsurf foiling, it’s best to try your first flights in 10 knots or over, enabling you to get a feel of how much lift the foil gives and how best to encourage flight.

Tuition plays a crucial part in gaining and embedding the right skills and techniques early on. A combination of the correct coaching points, the right learning environment and good equipment set, increase the frequency of success and development.

What will I learn on a course?

The RYA First Flights taster session is aimed at introducing you to the concept of foiling, the equipment needed plus all the knowledge you need to take off. This is often the easy part, but in order to really enjoy your first foiling take offs, you’ll need to understand the subtle but critical techniques necessary to keep you in the air.

Once you’ve got those first few take-offs under your belt, and your understanding of how the kit reacts, your primary skills will start to come back to you and accelerate your foiling progression allowing you to build confidence, to steer and bring you Sustained Flights. Those looking to move beyond this can start unlocking skills such as foiling into tacks and foiling gybes on the Performance Flights course.

What kit do I need?

The beauty of learning to foil at an RYA Training centre, is that they provide the kit. This gives you an opportunity to test the water without having to shell out for loads of expensive kit.

Where can I learn?

Participating centres delivering the pilot RYA Foiling courses in the south include: Southampton Water Activity Centre, Alton Water, Andrew Simpson Weymouth and Reading, The Official Test Centre (OTC) Weymouth, with more centres being added all the time.

An activity holiday abroad with Mark Warner is another great way to learn or for more advanced tuition you could try these established and dedicated foiling centres overseas: ASF - Lake Garda and ProVela.

Local businesses join forces for the benefit of the young people at Music Fusion A local restaurant in Fareham opened it doors to welcome the young singers and musicians from Music Fusion to showcase their talents at a fund-raising event organised by a local business networking group, Portsmouth Business Exchange, affectionately known as PBE. PBE has supported the charity for the past two years, raising funds to help them continue their support of the young people through challenging circumstances in their lives through music.

The event was held at Antonio’s West Street Fareham, who served a sumptuous three course meal on a freezing Wednesday evening to 40 members and guests of PBE Jinx Prowse, CEO of Music Fusion introduced the compare for the PBE Members – local businesses joining forces to make a difference evening’s entertainment, Matt Stevens, a well-known local musician from the area, who himself benefited from the charity to focus his energy into his music and is now an ambassador supporting its work today.

Mel Gregory and Marc Smith from Solved FM organised the vent on behalf of PBE and arranged a silent auction, a Boat Experience, Golf Sessions, Easter Hamper, Broadband and Telephone service for one year and more plus an extensive raffle, with prizes donated by members.

Mel commented; “Thank you to everyone that braved the temperatures and came along to this event. Antonio and his staff were amazing in serving up 40 fabulous meals from a great choice of food.

“It never ceases to amaze me how much can be achieved in just one evening. We raised, £2,000, a staggering amount. Antonio’s also contributing £5 per head of the ticket price. This will go a long way to help the charity.”

Marc Smith added: “Our thanks also goes to local businessman Giles Cleverly of Turnpike Tyres, for making everyone dig deep in their pockets and making it fun too. But ultimately our thanks to Jinx and his young people for entertaining us with their exceptional singing and lyrical skills accompanied by such accomplished musicians. And for also sharing their experience of what the charity means to them and how it has changed their lives.”

Future masterchefs get ‘Exclusive’ opportunity with Fareham College Fareham College catering and hospitality students hosted a visit from the ‘Exclusive Chefs Academy’. Students already have the benefit of learning in industry-standard kitchens and being taught industry experts but were today given the additional opportunity to work alongside leading professional chefs from the Exclusive Hotels & Venue Group.

The day involved six Academy chefs working in pairs with Fareham College students to deliver a menu designed by the Chef Academy and give Avenue 141 customers an outstanding culinary experience. Avenue 141 is Fareham College’s commercial restaurant.

Patrick McLoughlin, Hospitality and Catering lecturer at Fareham College said: “It is great to host the ‘Exclusive Chefs Academy’ here because it has given our students the unique opportunity to work alongside professional chefs and improve their understanding of what it is like to work in a professional kitchen. We have found today enormously beneficial and I’m incredibly grateful to the Exclusive Hotels & Venue Group.”

Celebrating the women that built Southampton on the 100-year anniversary of Votes for Women Southampton Suffragettes are an inspiration for women in politics like me. On this day, it is right that we remember their sacrifice and acknowledge the magnitude of what they achieved for future generations.

On the 100-year anniversary of the Act that first gave women aged 30 and over the right to vote, Southampton City Council and Carswell Gould have launched a celebration of the women who shaped Southampton in the last hundred years and the women who are actively shaping the city in the next hundred years. The Suffragette movement was led by Emmeline Pankhurst, whose campaign for votes for women began in 1903. Approximately 8.4 million were given the Right to Vote by the 1918 Act but it would take a further ten years until the 1928 Act that women secured the same voting rights as men.

The awards will recognise the women who have made a major contribution to Southampton from across four categories; community, cultural, economic and political over the last 100 years and those who are now building the city’s future for the next 100 years.

If you haven’t quite managed to stay on track, don’t deapair there’s still good news. If you get realistic with yourself now and commit, you can still achieve great things in time for flip flop weather.

I’ve got another two blinding workouts to challenge and change you this month. For both perform 40 seconds of each movement then 20 seconds rest for 3-5 rounds depending in available time and ability level.

Burpee jacks From standing, crouch down and kick out to a high plank with your feet spread like a jumping jack.

Perform a push up and reverse the movement, exploding into a star jump at the top.

This months recipe is a super simple meal that can be whipped up in no time. If you have access to a microwave and hob at work you can prep it at home and then cook it up in less than 15 minutes....my record is 9 minutes!!!

Get your takeaway fix with way less calories and naughtiness with this months recipe. Minimal ingredients and maximum taste.

Close grip push ups Place your index finger and thumbs together on the floor to make a diamond shape and perform a push up.

1 chicken breast, diced or sliced 125g microwave rice 2 spring onions 50g broccoli

Sauce 1 clove garlic, crushed 1 tbsp coconut sugar/honey

2 tbsp sesame oil

1/2 red chilli, chopped

Jumping lunges

1/2 tsp ginger, crushed

Start in a lunge position making sure your knee doesn’t go past your toes and stays over them.

Start off by mixing your sweet chilli sauce and set aside.

Explode up and switch legs in mid air to land in a lunge on the other leg.

Next, get the chicken in a pan with a little oil and cook until browned Chuck in the broccoli and a splash of water. Cover with a lid and stir once every minute until the broccoli is cooked.

Whilst the broccoli is doing it’s thing, sling the rice in the microwave and cook.

Arrange the broccoli and rice neatly in a bowl or fling it in. Pour the sauce into the pan with the chicken to heat it through and add to the bowl.

Minister visits £2.8m skills investment at College of the Year

(The Skills Minister Anne Milton MP joined by Caroline Dinenage MP, Nigel Duncan, Principal of Fareham College, Anne Marie-Mountifield, Chief Executive of the Solent LEP and apprentices from Fareham College)

The Minister for Apprenticeships and Skills, the Rt. Hon. Anne Milton MP, visited Fareham College today to learn about the £2.8m Local Growth Fund investment from the Solent LEP into the college’s £4.1m Civil Engineering Training Centre (CETC).

commercial, industrial, transport, public sector projects and the £244m worth of capital investment the Solent LEP is making across the area. Our investment at CETC will also represent a further stage of development at the Solent Enterprise Zone.

CETC is the second flagship investment in skills awarded to Fareham College by the Solent LEP. Over 1,665 apprentices will be trained at this centre between 2018 and 2023. The purpose-built facility will offer first class training facilities which are designed to meet the future workforce requirements for civil engineering and construction businesses in the South.

“The approach to apprenticeships at the site will be truly groundbreaking, with courses designed by leading employers to ensure apprentices have the practical skills and certifications needed to start work. Those completing their qualification at CETC will be guaranteed a job with one of the Group’s employers”

Anne Milton MP, Minister for Apprenticeships and Skills said: “Fareham College is absolutely fantastic! The enthusiasm to train up young apprentices as well as older apprentices is amazing. I’m pleased to see so many people starting a successful career as an apprentice on a construction site.”

Fareham College has recently been crowned TES FE College of the Year and is judged ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted. The new facility will further enhance Fareham College’s strong reputation as the leading provider of professional and technical qualifications in the region.

Nigel Duncan, Principal of Fareham College commented: “I’m delighted to welcome the Minister to Fareham College to show her how we are meeting the future skills requirements of the local economy. We work incredibly closely with our employer partners to ensure that all our students receive high-quality training that will help them either continue their studies or move into the workplace.”

The centre will be located alongside Fareham College’s industry-leading CEMAST (Centre of Excellence in Engineering, Manufacturing and Advanced Skills Training) facility that was also backed by £6m of Solent LEP investment. The college works with major employers such as BAE Systems, GE Aviation, Airbus and South Western Railways at the site and was highly commended in a recent Ofsted inspection.

The Minister also had the opportunity to sit down and host a roundtable discussion with major civil engineering and construction businesses in the Solent region who have helped to make the new civil engineering training complex a reality. This included Blanchard Wells, Knights Brown, Dyer & Butler, Blaze, R&W, Gracelands, Aeropark and John Reilly. The employers were able to discuss with the Minister the future skill requirements of the Solent region and the UK economy more broadly.

Mark Wells, Chairman of the Solent Civil Engineering Employers’ Group, said: “The new training centre is good news for apprentices and students, good news for employers and good news for our local economy. As a group, we came together because we recognised the importance of making sure we had access to a skilled workforce. Our collaboration with Fareham College and the Solent LEP has been very productive and I look forward to seeing the new CETC being built.”

The College currently teaches over 1,500 full-time learners, 1,000 part-time or adult learners and a further 1,000 apprentices.

Student employment prospects at Fareham College are exemplary, with 98% of students and apprentices, of all ages, progressing to positive destinations that include employment, apprenticeships or further study.

Caroline Dinenage MP, stated: “My residents in Gosport are very lucky to have Fareham College on their doorstep which is an incredibly well-run college that offers students a high-quality education. The number of people with an apprenticeship has increased in Gosport recently and this is a really positive signal that more of our young people are getting the skills that they need to build a career and get on in life.”

What does it take to be a Puma?

Those that have read our previous articles in the Loop have seen us talk about the expansion of Locks Heath Pumas and the fact that we have grown into a Community based rugby club. With men’s and mini rugby teams being coached and playing each week we are reaching out to a lot of people to enjoy the sport.

But what makes us different?

Chairman George Winch says “Not having a traditional rugby club facility at the heart of the community presents us with a lot of organisational challenges for a club that is the fastest growing in Hampshire. I would like to get both the mini and senior sides playing at one location where members and parents can all socilaise together and we can plan for the future. I am still hoping that Fareham Borough Council or a landowner will help us in this quest and I am happy to meet with anyone who can offer us a solution. But what makes us different is that we are focused on our members having fun!! We always offer our members as much social activity as we can plan for and to aid us in this quest we have moved our Clubhouse to Sarisbury Community Centre, The Green, Sarisbury SO31 7AA. Not only is it a closer location to our current playing pitch at Brookfield School but it offers our members a wider range of activities not just focused around the rugby club.

There is a well serviced bar and the running of quiz nights, pool nights, dancing and fitness groups, flower arranging (big hit with our senior members!!) gin tasting sessions and band / tribute nights plus lots more. So we have invested in the Community spirit and want to help promote these activities for our members. By being a member of the Pumas you get access to the whole Community

Centre. Check out what is on at www.sarisburygreen.org.uk. We are planning to also attend the ‘Show on the Green’ on 9th June, where we will run a recruitment stand and have some games for the younger members we still hope to bring into the Club. Come along and check us out.

“So fun is at the heart of the Club along with the ‘passion to succeed’. Both the Pumas and the Puma Cubs have a great bunch of volunteers to make the Club a success. Each week throughout the season we play 2 men’s matches and the Puma Cubs have invested a lot of time in training the children and their coaches to be qualified, and able to run matches next season. This takes a lot of effort but the drive of people to make the Pumas a success is something I am very proud of. But we are not stopping at the end of the season in April.”

As the league campaign draws to a close the Pumas 1XV have been promoted to Hants 1 and the Club is already preparing for next season with the Coaching Team busily recruiting and improving training facilities where we can.

Head Coach Alan Palmer says “These are exciting times for the Pumas. We have a nucleus of young keen players in our 1XV team squad and good numbers of social players supporting our ethos of a warm friendly family environment”. Our 2XV has grown in strength and the players have all responded well to the drills and activities in training this season.

All this activity can be shown at our annual touch rugby event in July which is continuing to grow in popularity and is in aid of the Alex Wardle foundation. It is a great local event and anyone above the age of 15 can play. Keep looking at our website www.locksheathpumas.com for more information.

One of the areas we have not yet explored is the creation of a Women’s rugby team within the Club. The Women’s rubgy game has grown nationally thanks to the efforts of the England Women’s Rugby team (the Red Roses). There are many ladies eager to start learning and playing the sport and we think with all catchment area around us, that this is something we should see if we could start up. If you are interested in finding out more please contact George Winch (Chairman - chairman@locksheathpumas.com).

Please also state if already have any experience in either playing or coaching women’s rugby. If there is enough interest we will schedule a meeting to talk through all the challenges we may face.

An event that is open to all is the Pumas Touch Rugby sessions.

The Pumas will commence our Summer Touch Rugby from 5th May on Saturday mornings at 10.00am playing at Hunts Pond Road recreational space. You get to develop your handling skills and keep fit without the risk of contact. Those of you that like the excitement of the game can join in. Just turn up, introduce yourself. The programme will run until the end of June and we look forward to seeing new players, male or female, young or old.

The Puma Cubs will also be running touch rugby sessions during the summer months to keep the children interested and whilst we only take children up to the ages of 11 at the moment for full rugby sessions we will if there is a demand try and get some teenage sessions running.

Another great event we have in May is our End of Season awards where we reward our best players both on and off the pitch plus selected volunteers who have really helped the Club this season.

We are delighted to announce that Harlequins, England and British Lions Joe Marler is to be our guest speaker. This is a great coup for the Pumas in having one of England’s current squad players attending this event.

So what does it take become a Puma? Well you need to be interested in playing or participating around our great sport of Rugby Union. But this game has many outlets. 15-aside game, touch rugby, 7s, Womens game plus Minis… you decide where you or your family wish to play. You need to have fun and join your fellow members in participating in as much as the Club has to offer, be driven to achieve the best you can be, respect the match officials and have a winning mentality but also the grace to accept defeat should it happen and shake hands with your opponent.

New look Red Eagle Returns to Service Outside, new sun decks have been added to AA deck offering amazing views of Southampton Water and out across the Solent. Teak style seats have been fitted to this deck and along the promenade walk on A deck which for the first time is accessible by lift and therefore suitable for wheelchair users.

Red Funnel’s flagship Red Eagle has returned to service today between Southampton and East Cowes with a brand new look following an extensive £3m interior refit.

The refit mirrors the work carried out to Red Falcon (2014) and Red Osprey (2015) and was entrusted to Solent marine specialists Trimline, SMS and Wight Shipyard. The work involved the replacement of the passenger accommodation on B deck, the fabrication and fitting of two new stylish public lounges on A deck and new outside viewing space on AA deck.

The ship’s interior has been brought right up-to-date with a contemporary new look that now matches the best in the country and fulfils the design brief for more internal seats.

Kevin George, Red Funnel’s chairman and chief executive said: “Red Eagle marks the culmination of a £7m+ investment programme to provide our vehicle customers with a fleet-wide travel experience that matches the best in the UK ferry industry. The investment further demonstrates our commitment to the Isle of Wight as we work with partners and stakeholders to help grow the Island’s economy.”

The two main passenger areas on B deck have been completely replaced with a mix of modern seating styles and tables, subtle colours and clever lighting to create spaces which are perfect for socialising, working or just relaxing if it’s the start of a holiday.

On A deck there’s an upmarket new pet lounge and a purpose built Signature Lounge, offering customers a premium club experience. Both offer panoramic views across the Solent.

Lift access is now available from the main car decks at E and C levels to the passenger areas at B and A levels. Airconditioning has been added to keep all the passenger lounges cool in summer and cosy in winter.

Large ‘event themed’ art walls on B deck are used to accentuate the new look and a large map of the route between Southampton and East Cowes forms the centrepiece of the new lobby area. The map uses QR codes to provide more information about the points of interest that can be seen from the ferry.

For entertainment, 35 LED screens showing the vessel’s position, local points of interest and real-time travel information for road, rail and coach services have been fitted. BBC rolling news will be screened in the bar area on B deck. There is also a large touch screen in the North Lounge on A deck with games, an image library and an interactive map of the Island for visitors. Bridge top cameras are used to relay live video footage to the screens for close up views of passing cruise ships and merchant vessels travelling along Southampton Water.

Published 15 March 2018 from the Department for Transport, UK Space Agency, Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy, Sam Gyimah MP, and Jo Johnson MP, new laws were set out gaining Royal Assent, unlocking an exciting era of British space innovation, exploration and investment.

Work is already underway to ensure the next generation is involved – with over 1,000 apprenticeships in the space sector and government’s Year of Engineering campaign championing careers in STEM to the next generation of scientists and astronauts. And it is British scientists, engineers, programmers and entrepreneurs including LOOP Magazine and Space Times UK founder, Blake Hopley KJ, BSc (Hons), MSc, MResSci (Port), A molecular research scientist who works with UK Space Biomedicine and UK Space Environments Associations, along with many Space Life scientists around the UK and the world, who are at the forefront of shaping this future.

Currently UK firms rely on a limited supply of launches in other countries which leaves them vulnerable to launch delays. The Space Industry Bill will help to increase the supply of launch services closer to home, and capture a share of growing global launch demand. Government will now work to create a regulatory structure that empowers innovation, embraces opportunity and ensures UK launch activity is carried out safely and responsibly in the UK. Science Minister Sam Gyimah said: “The Space Industry Bill offers an exciting opportunity for the UK to soar to new heights and be at the forefront of the commercial space age. Through the government’s ambitious Industrial Strategy, we are working with the sector to pursue pioneering commercial space opportunities, including developing new technologies, infrastructure and services. This will open up the UK to new frontiers, transforming the way we live, and establishing us as a space flight leader.”

The Space Industry Bill will enable the first commercial space launch from UK soil, in history, creating the potential for hundreds of highly-skilled jobs and bringing in billions of pounds for the British economy. The passing of the Bill, the most modern piece of space industry legislation anywhere in the world, means British businesses will soon be able to compete in the commercial space race using UK spaceports.

This will not only ensure Britain is capable of launching small satellites and scientific experiments from our own soil, but also able to take advantage of future developments like hypersonic flight and high-speed point to point transport.

The Space Industry Bill gives companies the ability to launch satellites from UK soil, putting us at the forefront of the new space race, and helping us to compete as the destination of choice for satellite companies worldwide. With one in four of all telecoms satellites substantially built in Britain and our businesses at the forefront of hypersonic flight technology, through its Industrial Strategy, the government is working with the industry to increase its global share of the space sector from 6.5% to 10% by 2030. And if the UK can build its own spaceports, we will also be able to tap into the rapidly expanding launch market – worth an estimated £10 billion over the next decade. Satellite services already support more than £250 billion of GDP in the wider UK economy as well as products and services we all rely on.

Science Minister Sam Gyimah will also announce 8 new projects today as part of the UK Space Agency’s Space for Smarter Government Programme, which demonstrates the potential of using satellite technology to solve challenges faced by the public sector. These projects range from using satellite data and machine learning technology to support the roll out of charging points for electric vehicles, to deploying drones and satellites in the battle against marine waste. The Space Industry Bill will also create new opportunities for the UK’s business and scientific community to carry out cutting-edge research and inspire the next generation of British scientists and engineers.

Dr Graham Turnock, Chief Executive of the UK Space Agency, said, “The Space Industry Bill guarantees the sky is not the limit for future generations of engineers, entrepreneurs and scientists. We will set out how we plan to accelerate the development of the first commercial launch services from the UK, and realise the full potential of this enabling legislation over the coming months.”

The American Space Force Recently President Trump said that it would be a good idea to have a Space Force but what does really mean? With the word Force that implies with force and weaponry, and that idea is not wrong. American troops are serving right now in hundreds of countries around the world, why not extend the operation keep the world safe, into space. US forces may however, be soon fighting in territorial battles in a brave new frontier, where a lot can go wrong, in space. Recently president Trump of the USA endorsed this idea, an idea that would take the current space missions coordinated by the Air Force into a new branch of the armed forces in America with a sole focus on space. President Donald Trump said, “We should have a new force called the Space Force. It’s like the Army and the Navy, but for space, because were spending a lot of money on space,” Last year there was a congressional proposal that tried to create this new branch of the services formally. there has been an explosion of commercial satellite expansion and communications equipment since the 1960’s, nearly 6 decades ago, put there at first by countries and more recently but commercial companies used for self-driving cars, mobile phones, global commination, television, allowing potential lovers to swipe right on their dating apps, and helping drivers reach their destination.

What if one of these satellites controlling your self-driving car gets hijacked, or infected with a virus? We will need a Space Force of some description to restore the problems and fix the threats to human safety and technological security. and etc. This ‘new’ concept of a Star Trek – Federation, I mean Serving Space Force, would absorb these missions in the air that other branches of the armed forces are working on, setting out on achieving their objectives.

It would form as a part of the Department of the Air Force, similar to Marines in the Navy and it would also expand America’s military prominence in the solar system as we begin to explore new frontiers. There would be a new four-star general of the Space Force becoming the eighth member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Rep. Mike Rogers thinks that creating this new branch will be necessary for US national security and sustain their status as a world leader in space. The Air Force however is adamantly against the creation of this new branch, but could this secure everyone’s safety of passage, as we set our sails for the moon or even mars.

It is alas, unclear is this will actually happen, as a congressional effort last November to create said Space Force flopped. But, now we are in a more positive frame of mind, with president Trumps endorsement and advocating openly his support, it might become our reality for the future of human space flight.

Not to mention the space debris threatening all of that military and commercial hardware deposited in space, NASA estimated that there are 20,000 pieces of debris larger than a softball in Earth’s orbit, 500,000 pieces of debris the size of a marble or larger and many millions of pieces that are too small to register, a future crisis here too which is not dissimilar to the plastic deposited in our oceans.

Because of all of this Trump believes the US needs this Space Force to ensure the safety of space equipment, monitoring cyber and physical threats against US navigation and communication assets, therefore the Space Force will initially be a defensive operation, that doesn’t mean troops in space, yet, but where has this well told story always lead us in science fiction? This essentially boils down to the question if Trump and America wants to protect life here on Earth, safeguard US and allies assets in space, but is a Space Force the right way to do it? But as the Air forces main focus is to fly planes here on Earth, why not a separate branch to fly planes in Space? At the end of the day, our goals are to “Live long, and prosper”.

This could also mean “Space is no longer a peaceful domain” and that the front line of a future conflict could be fought in what was once the final frontier, but I am sure it is not just the USA who are considering arming military astronauts, but America feels it necessary to open a Space War Centre.

Because of the nature of space, there is now tons of military equipment, in the form of satellites that enable countries and any tech-savvy military force to navigate terrain and allow global communication systems. Plus, certain space assets can help in tracking enemy fighters, or control missiles or take pictures for intelligence. Without the space environment, it would be much harder to fight on Earth with effectiveness, hence, why Russia and China and America are all opening investing heavily into it.

An incredible experience that will no doubt be physically exhausting. So before the trip in July 2019, Daniel and the team will attend team training days to improve fitness levels and learn more about the area they will visit. It is a fantastic opportunity to build life skills, learn about other nations and cultures and develop courage, kindness and a sense of adventure. Of course all this comes at a cost ….. Daniel has to raise £2,800 to cover flights, food, trips and lodging. It’s a lot of money but worth it to gain valuable skills and life long memories.

Community News Sailing charity invites veterans to get on board for three day sailing event An expanding sailing charity for injured veterans has unveiled its plan to move into the world of competitive racing.

In partnership with Help for Heroes and The Endeavour Fund, Turn to Starboard will launch a new racing division in May from a new office at Haslar Marina in Gosport.

The charity, based at Falmouth Marina in Cornwall, was set up three years ago and believes sailing has a therapeutic effect on those affected by military operations. It recently reached a major milestone after providing 1000 sailing opportunities to veterans and has helped many gain sailing qualifications to help start new careers in the marine industry.

According to Chief Executive and founder Shaun Pascoe, the new venture will help to increase the number of sailing opportunities for veterans while honing skills for aspiring Yachtmasters on the charity’s training course.

“We are honoured to enter into the world of competitive racing which is a natural progression of what we offer and provides a great way for those affected by operations to learn new skills, rebuild confidence and connect with other veterans,” he said.

“Thanks to the incredible support from Help for Heroes and The Endeavour Fund, this exciting new venture will help show that suffering from physical or mental injuries doesn’t have to mean aspiring to less, while serving as a gateway to future opportunities in the sport.”

Over the summer months, the charity is planning to enter a series of local races and regattas including the annual Round the Island Race. The one-day yacht race around the Isle of Wight regularly attracts over 1,700 boats and around 16,000 sailors, making it one of the largest yacht races in the world.

To celebrate the launch, Turn to Starboard is holding a fun 3-day sailing event from May 24 to 26. Up to 60 veterans from all over the UK are invited to apply to sail on board 10 racing yachts especially chartered for the event.

“On day one, crew members can learn the basics of sailing in a relaxed environment with instruction from a professional skipper,” said Shaun. “The second day is some basic racing rules, tactics and general knowledge to help on the race course the following day, when each boat competes against each other in a fun regatta. “Whether you’re new to the sport or a seasoned sailor, come along and join some like-minded individuals and enjoy some time on the water. You can choose to pull on a few ropes or just sit back and enjoy the ride, it’s totally up to you. The event is about experiencing life on the water with other veterans affected by operations and having some fun, as well as maybe winning a trophy or two!”

They said, “Whilst visiting the Wards at Christmas time and after speaking to the Nurse at the time, we were surprised to find out how much the Wards needed toiletries. After visiting, we decided to put together a campaign to ask the customers to donate various toiletries that we could give to QA. We are lucky to have such generous customers that want to support the local community. We are overwhelmed with the response and are proud to drop off the donation.”

Community News Claire Wiltsher – Artists and Illustrators Artist of the Year Professional artist Claire Wiltsher from Hampshire has won an important national competition. She has received the Artists and Illustrators Artist of the Year 2018 award for her painting Spatial Connection 3, measuring 120 x 120cm. There were 2,400 entries and Claire’s painting was selected from 50 that were shortlisted. It will be on display at The Mall galleries, London until February 24.

“My work was probably one of the few more abstract styles on display,” says a shocked Claire, who received £1,000, a set of handmade brushes and a solo show at Panter and Hall gallery, London.

Claire’s land and seascape paintings capture the dynamic light effects of weather as well as exploring the drama and many facets of nature. Her style links a sound knowledge of traditional landscape painting with contemporary ideas. She has worked as a lecturer of art as well as painting. For the past five years she has only focused on her painting, working from her studio in her Lyndhurst garden.

Winchester Round Table raises over £70k for charity

Fareham College wins FE College of the Year

Winchester Round Table Charitable Trust have released figures showing that their contribution to local charities was over £70,000 in 2017. The funds were raised from a series of popular local events including the annual Bonfire night and the much-loved Santa Sleigh.

Fareham College’s status as the top further education college in the country was confirmed today as it scooped the prestigious Times Educational Supplement (TES) award for FE College of the Year.

In total, eight of the highest performing FE colleges were shortlisted for the TES award but Fareham College came out on top.

Nigel Duncan, Principal of Fareham College said: “We’re thrilled to win this award. This has been an amazing few months for us.

Ofsted ranked us outstanding, the Prime Minister paid tribute to our hard work and now we have been named FE College of the Year

by TES. As Principal, I’m delighted to accept this award but I know it wouldn’t have been possible without the inspired teaching and tireless enthusiasm of all our staff. This is also an award for them.”

At the awards evening which was hosted by comedian Alan Davies, the judges of the awards said that ‘the college has shown an innovative approach to the curriculum and to engaging with industry in a growing area’. The judges also commented on the first-class teaching facilities at Fareham College noting that the college ‘(has) added to the educational provision in the area in a complementary way and growing its market’.

10th Anniversary, Railway Exhibition The 10th and biggest annual exhibition of a local area group of railway modellers will be a Mecca for adults and children who have any interest in this fascinating hobby. This year they are supporting Chestnut Tree House, a wonderful local charity that cares for 300 children and young adults from 0-19 years of age with progressive life-shortening conditions. The show, which is the largest of its type in this area, is expected to attract visitors from all over the South to enjoy the many model railway layouts on display (twenty are already booked to appear) and visit the stands of many suppliers of new and second hand model railway equipment, books and tools. As well as the ‘Ride on railway’* (weather permitting), there will also be the team of caterers ready to supply home prepared food and refreshments throughout the day. Several of the group members, most of which live in an area from Emsworth (Hants) to Worthing (West Sussex), have their own layouts, which they are pleased to discuss with visitors, giving help and advice on many aspects of building and operation.

This year, visitors attending the exhibition may be invited to an informal open day later in the year at a local venue, to view some of these layouts and learn what the friendly group can offer to established modellers and those new to the hobby. Hampshire Conservation Volunteers Netley Common is nearer to Hedge End than Netley, and is Southampton’s last remaining piece of open heathland. It has grassland with islands of scrub and gorse, and a fringe of mixed woodland. A spring creates a boggy area of tussocky vegetation.

Archaeological features include a Roman Road and a Bronze Age burial mound. Livestock are used to help keep the vegetation in check.

On Saturday 12th May, starting at 10.00am, Hampshire Conservation Volunteers will be maintaining the fences and gates to make sure the cattle are under control. Any help would be welcome, tools are provided, just wear old clothes.

Rocky Walk For The Rocky Appeal Enjoy a steady walk on Sunday 13th May along the beautiful Southsea Seafront in aid of The Rocky Appeal. The Rocky Appeal is currently raising money for the Da Vinci Robot, which is taking surgery to a whole new level at Queen Alexandra Hospital. Join family and friends for a gentle 5-mile walk from the Eastney end of the shoreline to The Still and West Pub at Old Portsmouth. This event is free to join, just raise as much as you can to help The Rocky Appeal reach its £2.4 million target for keyhole surgery at QA Hospital. The walk takes place from the Eastney end of the seafront (by the public conveniences). Meet at 10.30am, and the walk will begin at 11.00am.

This walk will take approximately one hour; we look forward to seeing you there! Whiteley WAGs WI are a modern twist on the traditional WI with a varied and inspiring programme running throughout the year. Hedge End WI On 5th February we had the very popular ‘Free Day’ with the theme of ‘Murder and Mystery’ and at our regular meeting Barbara Bennett talked about ‘Special Operations’.

WI members were very glad to hear that they knitted and crocheted 1400 hats for the ‘Innocent’ drink bottles which raised £350 for Age UK, so we hope to do the same or better next year.

We were given red and black wool by a WI member called Vanda so that we can knit poppies to be sold by the British Legion and three different poppy patterns were distributed.

Visitors are very welcome to our large but friendly group which has many varied activities and interesting speakers.

We are continuing the knit poppies which will be collected on our quiz night on 26th June.

Other dates to be aware of are; WI Festival on the recreational ground in Eastleigh on 13th May where Hedge End WI will have a stall of mixed crafts.

May 22nd will be Hedge End WI’s Annual General Meeting, plant sale and Barnett Cup decided.

May 29th is the date of the Spring Buffet.

Botley Market Hall Celebrates Again!

The charity which owns and runs Botley’s Market Hall celebrates another successful year at its Annual General Meeting on Thursday 3rd May at 7.30pm in the Hall. It is well used, and loved, by the local community and hosts over 20 groups and clubs serving all interests and needs in the village. At the AGM, local bee keeper, Louise Evans, will give a short talk on beekeeping, then there will be an opportunity to get involved in running the Hall, either as a volunteer or on the Committee. The Hall has become a focus for top class live entertainment locally and plans are already afoot to plan more shows for the Autumn/Winter period.
