award winning kitchen makeovers

After Makeover

Upto 50% cheaper than a new fitted kitchen We had several quotes & design suggestions from other companies before meeting Ben. From the first meeting we were impressed with Ben’s understanding of our needs & he gave us excellent practical ideas. We particularly liked that he was able to show us samples there and then, without the need to visit a show room. Dan & Mitch (our fitters) were brilliant- they were friendly, respectful of our home, involved us in decisions along the way and, without doubt, made the process far less stressful than we imagined it would be! We have been recommending Happy Kitchens to everyone we’ve shown off our fantastic new kitchen to. Thanks so much guys - Mr Fog

At Happy Kitchens, we offer a wide range of makeover services ranging from replacement worktops, kitchen doors, splashbacks, hinges and wirework to new appliances and much more. We also offer new kitchen design and installation services too.

Beautiful Bedding Plants Now is the ideal time to put in of your summer Est. 45 years bedding and to obtain a good display you can recondition your garden borders with fertilizers, manure or top soil.

Titchfield

Moisten the soil first with the garden hose if your soil is very hard, as this will make it much easier to dig in the fertilizer. With such dry conditions, the fertilizer or manure will add essential nutrients to the soil and help to retain moisture. It is also a good idea to add a mulch as this will help moisture retention as well as acting as a soil conditioner as it breaks down over the next year.

Popular Petunias So which bedding plants? We will begin with the ever-popular colourful petunias. These wonderful annuals brighten our borders with colours ranging from the deepest to the palest pink, mauves, blue and white and they will flower until the first frosts.

New Guinea Bizzy Lizzie

Then there are marigolds with their bold and brassy yellow heads or the dark blood red flowers of the salvia or geranium family for those of us wanting to make strikingly colourful statements this summer.

Hanging Baskets Then, what English garden would be complete without our hanging baskets full of flowers cascading down our walls, adorning our front porches and brightening up our fences? And how drab and empty our patios and terraces would be without our colourful containers full of petunias and trailing lobelia.

Swan River Daisy

Swan River Daisy Or what about Brachycome? More commonly known as the Swan River daisy with its fragrant flowers in various shades of the brightest blues with delicate lacy foliage. Certainly, our baskets and planters would not be the same without this staple flower. Bacapo is also another favourite for hanging baskets and containers with its abundance of blue, pink or white tiny flowers. What about the Bidens plants? With its bright golden yellow flowers and semi trailing habit it looks great in either baskets and or planters. Get planting! Hambrooks of Titchfield 01489 572285 Petunias

Little Canton An exciting new modern Chinese restaurant situated on the banks of the River Hamble in Bursledon. Formerly known as Riverside Chinese Restaurant, the restaurant underwent a large-scale refurbishment last year, which aimed to modernise the site and concept in order to offer a new dining experience to the area. Despite the new name, the restaurant is still run by the same family that has done so for over 25 years. With stunning views of the River Hamble, neighbouring boatyards and Bursledon Bridge, it is an ideal place to wine and dine the night away.

The Food Little Canton’s menus were created with the help of the School of Wok Consultancy, which is headed by renowned celebrity chef and author Jeremy Pang who worked with the Little Canton team personally. The menus include a mixture of classic Chinese dishes and modern Chinese fusion dishes, which offers diners the choice of traditional Chinese comfort food alongside dishes that are new, exciting and altogether different. You can find options such as a classic sweet and sour chicken with mixed peppers and juicy pineapples alongside a modern black pepper and black bean glazed short-rib claypot. The menus aim to use modern, international cooking techniques and ingredients in perfect fusion with traditional Chinese cuisine. Uniquely, Little Canton has a ‘no added MSG (Monosodium Glutamate)’ policy. Instead of using the additive, they choose to use quality ingredients and enriched vegetable and meat stocks to achieve fresh and clean tasting dishes with an intense depth of flavour.

a fantastic, lively atmosphere. This makes the venue perfect for parties, celebrations or just a fun night out with friends and family. Locals also have the added benefit of being able to have a great night out without having to travel into either Southampton or Portsmouth city centres.

Takeaway and Delivery Service

Dancing the night away

For those who prefer to enjoy their guilty pleasure in the comfort of their own home, Little Canton offers a takeaway and delivery service. Customers can either pick up their order from the restaurant, which provides a perfect excuse to enjoy a quick drink at the bar, or they can have their meal delivered directly to their home. Delivery is provided free of charge for orders over £15 and within a 3 mile radius of the restaurant. They will still deliver to certain areas over 3 miles away, but this will be subject to a delivery charge.

Most Fridays and Saturdays are disco nights at Little Canton. Guests are given the unique opportunity to let their hair down and have a dance with dinner and drinks. The resident DJ provides great music and entertainment for all ages, which usually creates

Funeral Procession Etiquette The traffic is moving at a snail’s pace, you can’t see why, and you are frustrated. What you may not realise is that you are being held up by a hearse. Walking in front of the hearse a few weeks ago, during a funeral procession, we were overtaken by several cars. One of which passed so close that we had to stop. Research completed into attitudes towards funeral corteges has suggested that traditions are slipping away. Whether it’s caring less, simply not knowing or something else, less respect is shown today than it was even 10 years ago. So what should you do if you see a funeral procession? ...if you’re driving... The standard etiquette is to just accept it. Hearses normally drive at around 20-30 mph, so stick to the same speed and turn off and find another route when you can. Beeping the horn and trying to overtake are not generally advised, although the latter is OK if you’re on a dual carriageway. ...if you’re a pedestrian... Stopping what you are doing is usually welcomed and the good old fashioned doffing of the cap or removing your hat altogether still goes down well.

...if you’re travelling in the opposite direction...

...if you’re crossing the road...

There is no real issue but people often think there is. There is no expectation for people to stop or move across the road but revving the engine is frowned upon.

It is appreciated if people do not cross the road in front of a funeral cortège but standing by a zebra crossing can be confusing and hearse drivers will generally stop to be sure. It’s best to make it plain you are allowing the cortège to proceed by standing back.

There are no legal rules to follow when a cortège is passing, but the points above are very much appreciated by not just us but by the bereaved. Very simply, if it was a funeral for your loved one, how would you expect others to act towards them and you?

Local taxi firm scheduled to visit Brain Tumour Research facility tour

Gearing up for this year’s visitors to the Festival

Aqua Cars joined the national ‘Wear a Hat Day’ campaign, for Brain Tumour research, last month, and raised more than £250 on the day and will continue its support throughout 2018.

Graham Quick, one of the resident builders on the site has been busy building bird boxes for the woodlands, to encourage the birds with nesting boxes.

Senior management team of local taxi firm Aqua Cars are scheduled to visit The Centre of Excellence, University of Portsmouth Brain Tumour research facility soon to find out more about the charity and the research it does.

Hopefully with an increase in population the dawn chorus will be even better this year for campers and visitors to the festival.

Aqua Cars, has been operating in Portsmouth for more than 27 years and is passionate about the local community and supporting local charities. Rowans and Macmillan are two charities the staff at Aqua have always raised funds for in the past few years a total of £6,000 was split between the two organisations. Brothers, Barry and Ronnie Leng, co-owners of Aqua Cars bought the company in June 1990, when at the time they were both drivers for the small firm of just 16 vehicles. Now Aqua Cars has more than 700 cars in its fleet and has state-of-the-art-back office technology monitoring and tracking approximately 85,000 journeys per week. Bruce Hall, Operations Manager at Aqua Cars said: “Our staff and drivers did a great job of supporting the Wear a Hat Day campaign and between them collected money through a bake and cake sale.”

New Forest Folk Festival, 4th – 8th July at Powell’s Farm, Plaitford, Romsey, is getting ready for folk fans to flock to the festival, especially the birds in the surrounding woodland.

The biggest draw however is of course the headlining acts. Hampshire’s very own twin stars, Ward Thomas, who played Isle and Wight and Glastonbury Festivals last year, plus Steeleye Span and Feast of Fiddles. Other acts for 2018 include TRADarrr, Julie Felix, CoCo and the Butterfields, Reg Meuross, Matt Black, Polly Morris, and many more for further information visit www.newforestfolkfestival.co.uk Tickets are going fast, there is a cap on the numbers, so book early to avoid disappointment.

Dave Campbell, Assistant Manager added: “We have 72 number of staff on site and of course 775 drivers at the firm, all of them keen to support local charities. It will be good for us to visit the centre of excellence to find out more about the charity so we can share that with the staff and get a better understanding of how the money is used in the research of Brain Tumours.”

Nick Curtis, his wife Helen and his brother Keith and their families, organise the festival, at Powells Farm, the family’s home for six generations.

If you want to know more about how you can get involved with Wear A Hat Day Campaign visit www.braintumourresearch.org

Nick Curtis, who engages the acts for the festival said; “We are very excited about this year’s festival. We had a record number of visitors last year and the weather was amazing for us too.

Jo Jo Curtis, Nick and Helen’s daughter, manages the bar too and black lab Bertie is the festival mascot which completes the family unit. The festival is well known as the small family run festival with the Big line-up and this year is no exception.

“The feedback we had was very positive again and the growing numbers of people attending and talking about us is just great”.

Keith Curtis, who organises the marketing and advertising for the festival added; “We love the way word is spreading about our little festival. It’s important to us to keep our unique family run festival as the audience wants it. Up close and personal going above and beyond expectations year on year”. Fashion

The Trend Edit The eyes of the world watched on as Prince Harry married Meghan Markle in a fairytale ceremony at Windsor Castle. With some of the world’s biggest celebrities in attendance, Thomas Marrington finds the best high-street alternatives to the designer outfits on display

Of all the many celebrities in attendance at May’s Royal Wedding, few have the sort of power and iconic status that Oprah Winfrey so easily commands. Heading in on the tails of Idris Elba and his fiancée Sabrina Dhowre, Winfrey entered the ceremony in a stunning dusty pink Stella McCartney creation. There are a few reasons why what she wore is so perfect for a summer wedding; the pale pink is flattering on virtually every skin-tone, but especially great for darker skin (Serena Williams wore a similarly-toned Versace dress); the sleeves are perfect for hiding common problem areas on the arms, whilst shortening them creates a more youthful, casual effect, seen in this doublelayered lace version by Phase Eight. Pale pink is practically nude, which many consider to be a neutral. All the better to pair with a white hat a la Winfrey, or even a navy version. Plus, since this rule also applies to bags and shoes, you can afford to experiment with a less expensive dress in this shade, then add in more luxe accessories you’re more likely to rewear. Stylish, practical, non-fussy and budget aware - what more could you ask for? Phase Eight, Lace Dress, £140

Princess Diana’s look-alike niece stole the show in a Dolce & Gabbana pick that played perfectly on the season and the perfect weather of the day. The deep forest green colour paired with the embroidered flowers from the waist down feels modern yet traditional. Green is an interesting choice for a wedding in itself - typically seen as a more masculine colour, Lady Kitty Spencer expertly plays the deep earthy hue off against her alabaster skin tone and creamy blonde hair - the resulting contrast is eye-popping and highlights her collarbones with the squared off neckline. Plus, the ultra-demure length is superbly modest, and the flowing skirt feels more feminine than many of the heavily-featured bodycon silhouettes seen throughout the day. As a finishing touch, her velvet amber pumps peeping out beneath the hem of her dress meld beautifully with the deep green - red would have clashed too heavily, so the subtle gemstone orange is a smart choice. For a far more affordable take, head to House of Fraser and pick up this Jolie Moi offering, on sale now, for a mere £24. House of Fraser, Jolie Moi dress, £24

12 | The LOOP

contactus@loopmagazine.net

Fashion Like Oprah Winfrey, human rights lawyer and recent American Vogue cover-star Amal Clooney chose to attend the wedding in custom Stella McCartney, this time in a vibrant springtime yellow. On the arm of her husband George Clooney, Amal presented as her usual self - poised, polished and camera-ready. With her Lebanese ancestry, Amal’s dark hair, tan skin and hazel eyes provided the perfect base for the bright yellow dress, matched by her hat and golden pumps, all the better to showcase the seasonal hue. For many, such a statement colour would be overpowering. On blondes for example, the colour could serve to highlight redness in the skin and brassy tones in the hair. Especially good for women with tan, olive and dark skin tones, yellow is still not the easiest colour to wear - to avoid a clownish look, avoid clashing colours when it comes to accessories. Instead, go for a cohesive look like Amal and match your hat to your dress.

Next, Karen Millen, Pencil Dress, £180

This Karen Millen pencil dress, £180 at Next, is a fantastic dupe for Amal’s McCartney creation, whilst benefiting from a slightly more covered neckline which will elongate the neck through its deep v slit, although the cap sleeves may require one or two sessions hitting the dumbbells to make the most of.

After causing quite a stir at the 2011 Royal Wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie were decidedly more low-key than their internet-breaking appearance seven years ago. The recently engaged Princess Eugenie was praised for her subtle and stylish Jackie O-esque attire. Pairing a baby-blue thigh-hitting dress with a pillbox white hat, Eugenie brought a thoroughly retro look into the current decade by keeping her makeup fresh and modern, with a glowing tan and a flowing fringe. Whilst her sister still opted for something a little more dramatic, Eugenie showed that with age comes a certain grasp on style. The duck-egg blue colour is an excellent choice for the season, plus the cool tone emphasises the warm golden glow of her tan. Definitely not just one for the boys, the high street has some wonderful blue styles in a range of shades opt for the pastel end like Eugenie, or go deeper and darker like Victoria Beckham with a chic navy ensemble. At Reiss, this beautifully cut feather pattern dress is a little more daring than Eugenie’s option, I’ll admit, but its sheer beauty and fairytale romanticism will ensure you’re the best dressed person at the wedding. Fair warning however - you may well upstage the bride.

Auto Brite Express Bodyshop If you have lived in this area for a while, you may recognise the name, or any of the vans in the pictures. In 1994, St.John started trading as Auto Brite, offering a SMART repairing service to the local area, specialising in small to medium damage repairs to vehicles on the customers’ driveway. Over time, the vans grew larger to carry the ever-developing equipment and the areas St.John covered expanded also, as well as the services and types of repairs he offered. After 19 years of trying to perform perfect repairs in less than perfect conditions, the decision was made to move to a unit and offer the same service, but from a better environment. In

2013 Auto Brite opened an “Express bodyshop” in Segensworth, offering a same day, convenient paint repair service. Computer Know How! – Seamless, super-fast Wi-Fi, everywhere… In this edition of Computer Know How! Maintaining anonymity in an online world. Personal data has gotten to be so valuable in the online world that it has been called the new oil. Billions of pounds are made and spent collecting and harvesting your data as we browse the internet. It may be that that is the price we have to pay to keep the internet free. The main argument for this is that without the adverts that target you using this data, websites wouldn’t make any money, and would have to charge you. Although this argument has subsequently been blown out of the water with the recent Facebook/Cambridge Analytica scandal. Some data collection may be acceptable – surely though there has to be a line drawn somewhere. We will be going over a few ideas that can help you stay anonymous in this guide. These tips are easy to use and can be adopted fairly easily into your normal routine – without too much hassle and settings changes.

Turning off Location Data Where you are located is a big thing for advertisers. Using this data, they can work out where you live, work and plenty more information about your lifestyle. Disabling your location data can be disabled in your usual internet browsers, each of them in a very similar way. Using Chrome as an example – click the top righthand menu, then select Settings and head to Advanced Settings. Next scroll down till you see Privacy and Security, select Content Settings, then Ask before accessing option underneath the Location heading. On the next screen makes sure all of the blue sliders are turned off. If you would rather, you can always enable the Ask before accessing slider, which will then inform you if a site is trying to access any of your information.

Force sites to use HTTPS Websites are protected with either HTTP or HTTPS. These are different ways of encrypting the traffic between your internet browser and the website itself. That S at the end stands for Secure. If your URL starts with https, it is using the most secure standard of encryption, making it harder for people to get hold of your information. Most browsers now show this as a little green padlock at the start of the URL as well. Unfortunately, it is not as easy as simply enabling HTTPS on sites that do not support it, that’s done on their end. Some sites have it as default now, but many do not. However, there is an extension that is available for most browsers that has been developed by the privacy campaign group Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) and the anonymous browser Tor. It works in Chrome, Firefox and Opera. Once installed, it simply forces websites to use HTTPS if they can, meaning that you have as much protection as possible! You can download the extension here https://eff.org/https-everywhere.

Use a more private Web Browser Which browser is best at protecting your privacy? Well that is a difficult question to answer, as it really does depend on how you configure your browser. If you don’t like the idea of Google getting its hands all over your data, then don’t use Chrome. Firefox may be a better choice for you! It’s developer (Mozilla) promises not to share your data with others, and last year created 16 | The LOOP

a whole tab specifically for privacy settings. The company have also stopped advertising on Facebook following the Cambridge Analytica scandal. Other options are available, like Opera (https:// www.opera.com/) and Vivaldi (https://vivaldi.com). Opera has its own VPN (virtual private network) built in and an advert blocker! Vivaldi offers a much more customisable feel, allowing you to style your own settings and appearances. If you want to go a few steps further, you could always try Tor. First developed by the US Navy, Tor is a privacy software that disguises your identity by shifting your web traffic across multiple servers, building up layers upon layers of encryption, kind of like the layers of an onion (Tor even stands for The Onion Router). It gives you a different IP address every time you send or request data, disguising your actual IP. Some antivirus programs don’t like Tor’s methods of disguising your IP and so may cause some conflicts when you’re downloading things, but it is safe to use. To get Tor visit this site https://tinyurl.com/3esme2n. There are many more tips and tricks that go deeper into your privacy settings in Windows as well as your Internet browser settings. Give these three tips a try and see what you think! Unfortunately, it won’t necessarily stop every single pop up, but it is certainly a good place to get started. Web security is definitely something that is now starting to be taken a lot more seriously, with the government rolling out some pretty hefty legislation with the upcoming GDPR changes. Stay tuned for more information on the upcoming changes in the next edition!

Difference between Spyware and Malware This is a question we often get asked, so we figured where best to answer it than right here! Let’s start with Malware. Basically, malware is a combination of “Malicious” and “Software”. It’s used to describe any computer code with bad intentions. Not every piece of malware is harmful, but by definition all malware is definitely unwanted. Spyware is actually a particular type of malware. Ordinarily you would be unaware of any potential Spyware presence on your PC, with no real difference in performance or behaviour. However, if we look a little deeper, the spyware could actually be snooping on your activities and sending information to other people along with potentially private information. Ransomware is another type of malware. This malware works, by contrast, in plain sight. Alerting you that your OC is infected and that unless you pay a ransom within a certain time period, your information could be deleted from your PC and potentially sold online! Good security software deals with all types of malware, so make sure your antivirus and other security software is up to date! Don’t forget that you can always contact us for free impartial advice. Divorce... £500 + VAT * Of all the ups and downs life has to throw at us the breakdown of a relationship is one of the hardest to deal with. Whilst struggling to deal with the emotional fall out the harsh reality of considering the financial consequences is a huge burden but essential to resolve early on. When a marriage or relationship breaks down the parties have to divide between them the assets (or debts) they have accumulated. But what if they cannot agree - how can they avoid the trauma and expense of arguing the matter before a Court? First, nothing can be finalised without both parties making complete disclosure of their assets. Some people might not like this but there is no realistic alternative. Therefore, be prepared to produce copies of pay slips, bank statements, shares and building society accounts and anything else showing what money you have and where it is. It must be up to date. Secondly, remember that the children come first. They almost certainly did when you were together and that will not change just because you are now divorcing. The children will need somewhere to live. The parent they live with will need an income to provide for the children. Thirdly, get good legal advice early on from some one who is a specialist. In today’s world changes come about quickly and you need up to the minute expert advice. Perhaps you do not feel ready to take any action but need advice to understand exactly where you stand. We are good listeners and will give you balanced, considered advice to help you to have the confidence to make the decision which is right for you. Driver Belcher has a dedicated family law team with extensive experience of helping people to resolve the difficulties arising from the ending of a relationship. We are accredited specialist members of Resolution, which promotes a non-confrontational approach to resolving legal matters in a practical way. Kiwi Encounter Picture yourself sitting by the pool relaxing after hard days sightseeing, a good book in one hand and your favourite tipple in the other, around you are the well manicured lawns of a subtropical garden with views the Coromandel Hills and Firth of Thames. You wander indoors via the terrace, through the patio doors to be welcomed by the open stone fire, beamed ceiling and antique furniture of this most beautiful of Guest lounges. Welcome to New Zealand. It doesn’t sound bad does it? This is just one of the many unique accommodations that you could find yourself staying at by speaking to the staff of Amity Travel about arranging a self drive holiday of New Zealand. Amity Travel believes that your holiday adventure should be a Kiwi experience from start to finish and that includes where you stay. With a large portfolio of boutique B&BS, farmhouses, eco-lodges and self catering cottages and apartments there is little need to stay in one of the multi-national hotels that could be anywhere in the world. New Zealanders are a naturally open and friendly society, keen to share their personal experience and knowledge of their local area, this can be a massive bonus picking up little tit bits of advice (such as avoiding tourist traps) that help you to get the best out of your holiday time. Many of the homes will treat you like long lost friends rather than paying guests, offering you the option to

dine with them in the evening or to partake in local events, giving you the kind of holiday memories that will live with you forever. Variety is the spice of life and you get plenty of that with so many different styles of accommodation, one day you will find yourself waking up to glorious views across a picturesque bay whilst staying at a state of the art lodge perched high on a cliff top and the next you will be opening your curtains to views of rolling hills and farmland before heading off for breakfast on the terrace of a very rustic homestead from a bygone era. Farming is big part of the way of life in New Zealand and many of the farms have opened themselves up to the public offering you the chance to stay on a working farm, where you can try your hand at milking the cows, feeding the chickens or just take a guided walk. EcoLodges are at the forefront of modern tourism and New Zealand is leading the way here too, these self sustainable lodges offer a very different stay to anything else on offer and are a welcome addition to any holiday. So while hotels have their place, with such a variety of accommodation as you work your way around the stunning landscape of these beautiful islands there really is no excuse for staying in identical hotel rooms night after night.

Health & Beauty Beauty Boutique launches in Titchfield A VIP launch party was held last month to officially open the Beauty Boutique at 41a The Square, Titchfield. Talented, Taz Bayley, founder of the business, invited her loyal clients and friends to thank them for their continued support and encouragement to take the next step in her business venture. Self-employed as a mobile beauty therapist, Taz soon realised she had to work from a base owing to the volume of appointments. Working from her home in Fareham she decided the time was right to open her own Beauty Boutique to serve her current client base and offer a wider range of treatments.

“I have collaborated with some fellow beauticians to offer a wider range of therapies to ensure there is something for everyone when they come to visit us.” Kerrie Wells, attending the event said; “I wish Taz every success in her business, she has the skills and vision to really flourish. I am already a client and love coming to her for my treatments. Taz is so lovely, and full of ideas to bring out your best features.” Taz, has developed her own unique style blending classic traditional with the popular new style of airbrush makeup, after training in Florida working with some extremely talented photographers, models, actors and actresses. She is highly experienced both behind and in front of the camera. If you want to know more about Taz and the Beauty Boutique visit her Facebook page www.facebook.com/ tazbayleymakeup.

Taz commented; “I am so excited to finally launch the Beauty Boutique and share the event with clients and friends who have supported me on my business journey so far. It was my way to say thank you to all of them and to showcase the salon and my plans for it.

Fast-track trainees speed through apprenticeship training at HMS Collingwood An eager group of trainees recruited under the Royal Navy Undergraduate Apprenticeship Scheme (UGAS) enjoyed a taste of naval life at HMS Collingwood recently. The recruits spent time at the Royal Naval Leadership Academy (RNLA) as part of their accelerated training programme which should see them serving as Petty Officer Engineering Technicians on board HM Submarines within four years. The trainees all joined the Royal Navy in September 2017 and now, for the first time the intake includes recruits from the Fleet Air Arm. Recruits must have a proven educational background, namely a minimum of 5 A* to C Grade GCSEs and 160 UCAS points from STEM subjects before they are interviewed and selected with the expectation of first time success at every stage of training. Upon completion of Leading Engineering Technician Qualifying Course (LETQC), the graduates will be as qualified as recruits who have completed training in the traditional time-frame but will then spend seven to eight months at sea as LETs to obtain practical experience, before returning to complete Petty Officer professional training. At the RNLA, the group tackled carefully crafted exercises designed to test and encourage leadership abilities and boost team-building, skills essential for their future in the Royal Navy. Warrant Officer (WO1) Scott Matthewson explained the value of the exercises. He said, “These tasks break down barriers within the groups and introduce leadership skills. Trainees on the UGAS scheme get promoted quicker and paid more. The Royal Navy is currently short of engineers and we don’t want them failing their leadership course because the accelerated training leaves them lacking experience.” Leading Engineering Technician (LET) Owen Guy was part of the UGAS group and commented, “I’m going on LET course soon but I’d had no leadership experience within the Royal Navy. This helps you dive straight in without too much pressure but it takes you out of your comfort zone.” Leading Aircraft Controller (LAC) Stephen Bergmann came to HMS Collingwood from his base at RNAS Culdrose in Cornwall and agreed. “This course is good for the future of aircrew and the leadership experience is good. The best part of this has been the course leaders, they are really great leaders themselves and we can aspire to be like them and copy their style.”

Push up jacks Start in the top position of a push up. Lip your feet out to a wide stance and lower yourself into the push up before pushing back to the start position, jumping your feet back in

Average Geoff Why exercise? Either you’ve been living in a cave for the last few years or you’ve heard about all of the many benefits of exercise: it helps control your weight; it reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and some cancers; it strengthens your bones; and it improves your mental health and mood. The centre for disease control and prevention recommends that adults get at least 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity activity (e.g. running) every week and muscle strengthing activities twice a week that work many major muscle groups.

1

2

Reverse lunges

With everyone rushing about to get things done and please others it’s all too easy to neglect ourselves and let our health lapse.

Start standing upright and step one foot back, dropping into a lunge as in the image. Don’t allow your knee to whack the floor and control the movement before returning to the start and repeating the other side.

It’s not selfish to take some time out of your day for you...it is your day after all!

Leg raises

Granted, that sounds like a fair bit if you’re just starting out. However, remember that this is over the whole week. That’s just 15 minutes over 5 days if you wanted to go for the minimum. Add up all the commercial breaks from your tv shows or the time spent on social media and you’ll easily find time.

If you wake up one day to find you’ve neglected your health and are suffering, how can you expect to help others to the best of your ability? There’s a reason that airlines recommend you out your oxygen mask on first before helping others. Make the time for yourself and form habits that your future self will thank you for.

2

Adopt the same grip as in pull ups. Keeping your legs straight and toes pointed, lift your legs to waist height and lower in a controlled manner. If you need to scale it bend your legs and lift your knees high.

In this issue I’m over at Hamble Sports Complex which is an awesome location with tons of great activities to get you moving and loving fitness. We’re working on some strength based movements as well. If you can’t do pull ups yet, buy a resistance band and loop it around the bar. Get your feet in the band and use it to help lift you up above the bar.

1

1 Burpees From standing, drop down as in the images, thrust your legs out to the top of a push up. Perform a push up and reverse the movement back to the start, exploding into a jump at the top.

For both workouts this month perform each movement for 30 seconds and then rest for 30 seconds. Once you’ve done each one, rest for 2 minutes and repeat for 3-5 rounds. As always, have a great month, focus on what you want out of life and get up, get out and get it done!

Workout 1 Pull ups Hold the bar a little wider than shoulder width and with an overhead grip. Pull yourself up so your chin is over the bar. Try to imagine putting your elbows in your back pocket to keep your shoulders in line

1 cup oat flour 1 tsp. baking powder Pinch salt 1 large egg 1/4 cup pure maple syrup/honey 1/4 cup milk 3 tbsp natural peanut butter 1 tsp. vanilla extract *Optional 36g chocolate protein powder or 2 tbsp cocoa & 1 extra tbsp of oat flour

Pumas are ready for the new season... are you!!

LocksheatH

PUMAS RUFC

As the season drew to a close the Pumas reflected on what has been a great season and are preparing for the next come September. In this issue, our Director of Rugby Alan Palmer and Chair of our youth Section Richard Hadley share their thoughts. If their enthusiasm inspires you to play the game then come along during our summer events to try us out. You won’t be disappointed.

Alan starts by saying, “Our 1XV have had a great season and have been promoted to Hampshire 1 and are already getting in shape for the new challenge of a new season. We have had great numbers at training all year long, with our young coaches being truly inspirational. The boys have a really developed a healthy attitude to their game. They have shown real character and dug deep when needed. We are in good shape for the next level. Our 2XV also had a great year by completing a full fixture programme without the need to Alan Palmer cancel a single match and as we continue to grow this side will only get stronger.

It’s non-contact and a great way to stay in shape. Just contact Alan at directorofrugby@locksheathpumas.com for details. “We will be running our Annual Touch Tournament on the 30th June (again on Hunts Pond Road Recreation space from 11.00am – 6.00pm and are welcoming squads of 10 players. Each squad has to have an under 18 player, a woman player and an over 35. It’s a great day out for you to take part in or to come along and watch. Checkout the Pumas website www.locksheathpumas.com for registration details. For anyone interested we will be running a sprint training program throughout June (Tuesdays and Thursdays) starting Tuesday 5th June from 7.00pm onwards at the Mountbatten Centre Portsmouth PO2 9QA. “Our Pre-season Training starts Tuesday 3rd July at 7.00pm running Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7.00pm at Hook with Warsash School, Church Rd, Warsash SO31 9GF. The sessions are open to anyone wishing to see if they like the sport. So come and join us and find out what a friendly bunch we are and if you have children our successful Puma Cubs (minis and juniors) have just finished their first season. Richard over to you…”

“We are still anxious to boost our senior men’s squad and are looking to raise a ladies team to start training. So if you fancy returning back to rugby or you have always wanted to try, then now is your chance as we are a Club that will welcome you!!

Youth Chairman Richard Hadley says “Formed as the Mini/Midi section of the Pumas in August 2017, the first season for the “Puma Cubs” has been a roller coaster ride! The idea was to offer Rugby to a new local audience, and initially an Internet campaign, coupled with a recruitment day held at the Whitley shopping centre, led to taster sessions being run within the Locks Heath ward. Meanwhile, contact had been made with Hook-with-Warsash School and by late September the Puma Cubs had established Sunday mornings as Youth Rugby morning, with regular training sessions held from 10.00am every Sunday at the School.

“However, the summer months don’t stop us. We play Touch Rugby every Saturday during the summer starting at 10.00am at Hunts Pond Road recreation space, Titchfield Common. The session is open to any member of the public (all abilities and genders very welcome) that may wish try the Touch Rugby out.

“As we drew a curtain over the first season of the Puma Cubs in May, our official membership stood at 65, ranging from U6 to U11. All of this is testament to the support of the local parents and children, for whom the Puma Cubs had clearly captured their imagination.

30 | The LOOP

contactus@loopmagazine.net

“Over the summer months, we will be holding more recruitment drives with the senior Club as we support local School and Community Centre fairs and fetes. All of which hopefully not only promotes the Club in general as a whole, but continues to add weight to our efforts to provide a permanent home to the Club, where the Senior and Junior Pumas can train in one locale, and with luck one day, one of the first Puma Cubs will represent the Pumas Senior side. “Our pledge to the parents was to promote Safety, Fun and Rugby. To that end we have been working hard over the summer to get many of our coaches onto the required RFU Coaching courses, First Aid courses and our Safeguarding Officer Hayley Selby has been tirelessly ensuring that all that we do complies with Child Safety regulations. “Whilst we are keen to attract new members across all the age ranges, it is at the U12, U11 and U10 where our numbers have Richard Hadley been thinnest and we are particularly keen to bolster our numbers in these age ranges. Rugby has been proven to improve children’s confidence, teaching teamwork and discipline in an age where our youth are all to often accused of a lack of respect towards society, and watching the young people who have formed the first Puma Cubs develop and grow as teams and individual is truly humbling, and a joy to witness. “Finally, I would like to extend my personal thanks and the thanks of the collective Club to local investors without whom the whole project would have been a great deal harder to fund and get underway. Sincerest thanks go out therefore to PLM homes, SPS Sporting Partnerships, the Rugby Bastion and first aid support from the Alex Wardle foundation.” Our second season begins in early September, at the Hookwith-Warsash school along Church Road and we look forward to continuing our very close relationship with the School. We would be delighted to welcome new prospective members, and I welcome any questions you might have personally by email at chairman@locksheathpumacubs.com.”

Jonathan Elsmore 1XV Player of Season with Joe Marler - Harlequins, England and British Lions.

Chairman George Winch finishes off by saying. “Rugby is at the heart of a community. The values that our players have shape and define you. The Pumas have just had our Season Awards event where Harlequin, England and British Lion Joe Marler, came down to present the awards to our players and speak on the values that are in the game. We may be a junior rugby Club but we have a far greater reach than many of the bigger Clubs on Hampshire. We have a great range of social activity that brings together not only our players but their wives/girlfriends/ boyfriends/mums and dads/grandparents and other supporters willing to follow the Club.” So get ready for the new season and start by joining us in our Summer programmes. You won’t be disappointed!! Contact George at chairman@locksheathpumas.com contactus@loopmagazine.net

The culinary event, on-board Dutch-owned Princess Caroline, will take guests on an evening tour of the south coast on Thursday 16th August - with proceeds going to Cancer Research UK. “This is a great chance for people to come together for an evening of wonderful food, good music and beautiful views of the south coast - and to raise money for this amazing charity at the same time,” said Franny. “Cancer Research UK will benefit from the proceeds of the evening, and that makes me very happy. Asparagus Risotto Verde Ingredients 1 pound asparagus Handful parsley tops or spinach leaves Salt 3 tablespoons butter 2 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil 1/2 cup finely chopped shallot or onion 1/2 cup pinot grigio (or other dry, white wine) 1 cup Arborio rice 4 cups of light broth 1/3 cup freshly grated Parmigiano Reggiano Fresh lemon juice from half a lemon Thinly sliced red radish, watercress and fennel fronds (optional) for garnish

Instructions

doesn’t turn brown); add the shallot and 1 teaspoon salt and cook it softened, 1 minute or so. Add the rice and stir to coat with the fat, cook until the rice begins to crackle, 1 minute. 3. Pour in the wine, stir it around and boil until it’s evaporated. Pour in 2 cups of the stock, bring to a steady bubble and cook until absorbed, stirring frequently for 7 – 10 minutes. 4. Add another cup of stock, another 1/2 teaspoon salt and continue cooking until almost absorbed. Watch carefully at this point – the rice will be nearly ready when the grains have swelled in volume and the liquid becomes thickened. Taste the rice – it should be tender all around, and very slightly al dente at the core. Add more liquid if needed, 1/4 cup at a time until you feel it’s done. There should be some thick, starchy liquid still left in the pot. You might not use all the stock.

1. To make the risotto: Bring a small pan of salted water to a boil. Trim off the bottom inch of the asparagus and discard. Cut off the first 3 inches of the tips; slice the remaining stalks into 1-inch lengths. Drop the tips into the water and cook 1 minute; remove with a slotted spoon to a bowl filled with ice water. Drop the chopped stalks into the boiling water and cook exactly 3 minutes. Immediately remove the stalks with a slotted spoon and put in a blender along with the parsley or spinach. Add a pinch of salt and 1/2 cup of the cooking water and puree until very smooth.

5. Remove the pan from heat and stir in the reserved asparagus puree, remaining butter and half the cheese. Stir in the lemon juice and taste the risotto for seasoning, adding more salt to taste if needed. Gently stir in the asparagus tips.

2. Heat 1 tablespoon butter and the oil in a heavy pot over medium-high heat until the butter melts and sizzles (but

6. Serve in bowls, topping each one with some radish, watercress and fennel fronds with additional cheese on the side.

Local Talent – Artist Alan Akerman LOOP Magazine received a lovely phone call from the wife of a very talented local artist last month and we wanted to share his amazing work with our readers.

“I have in the past painted scenes in the Meon Valley and River Test. I normally like to include a river or stream for the reflective element.”

Alan Akerman has lived in the area for over 50 years and belongs to the Warsash Art Group, we asked him where his favourite place in Hampshire to paint:

Alans take on the Landscapes and Seascapes really capture light well with good perspective to make really impressive artworks. Alan said to us that he was inspired to paint because of “living in such a beautiful part of the UK with the countryside and particularly the whole of the South Coast. I am very keen on painting the sea, the rougher the better to try and capture the movement and light.” Alan’s Grandfather and Great Uncle were crew and lost in the Titanic disaster which has drawn Alan to marine art Alan added that “My father could draw pretty well and I trained as a draughtsman and enjoyed sketching which led me into oil painting.” With work and family commitments Alan was not able to explore his hobby fully, now in retirement this has enabled him to dedicate more time to paint more compared to the early day’s. We have picked a couple of Alans very impressive artworks to show you, if you would like to browse his impressive gallery or even would like to buy one of his works, scan the QR code or visit www.alanakerman.com.

Do you know anyone who is lonely, isolated or just in need of a helping hand? Could they benefit from some help and companionship? In an ideal world we would all take the time to care for the older people around us. But the truth is, despite our best intentions, these people are often the first casualties of our busy lives. Now there’s a way to ensure they no longer have to face days alone with just the TV for company. Our carefully vetted, lovely Companions will visit them, taking the time to listen, fill their days with chat and activity and help with practical needs. We help people remain independent by providing friendship and assistance at reasonable rates, which are far less than those of traditional Care companies, typically £16 per hour.

Jonathan Pie to star at Wickham Festival Jonathan Pie will headline the Comedy Stage at the 2018 Wickham Festival. The internet sensation rocketed to fame playing the role of an offair television reporter giving his forthright and uncensored views of the latest news and political events. The character is the creation of Tom Walker who last year drew a huge crowd to the Wickham Festival for a Q&A. It proved such a success that he is now returning to the picturesque site and bringing the full stage show which recently drew sell-out crowds to venues across the country.

Festival organiser Peter Chegwyn said: “We are thrilled to have Jonathan Pie topping our comedy bill on Friday 3rd August. It is a real coup for us. “I guess we might have to put out a parental guidance warning because of the language but it is a late-night set. I know it will be a huge draw for people attending the festival. “His show is unique. It is absolutely hilarious but also quite thought-provoking. Last year’s on-stage interview with Tom Walker was a great success so we are delighted to have him back, this time in character.” Organisers are looking to build on the success of last year’s inaugural comedy stage and Pie will be supported by several other top acts which have yet to be announced. Chegwyn added: “Last year was the first time we had tried a late-night comedy tent and it proved hugely popular so this year we are making it even better. “Once the music finishes, many festival-goers are not quite ready to turn in. They are often looking to wind down and maybe enjoy another drink so this is a good way of providing entertainment without the noise affecting our neighbours. “It is all included in the admission price which is another reason why tickets are selling so well. The line-up is looking incredibly strong and advance tickets sales are reflecting that. It is looking like a bumper crowd so fans are advised to buy early.” With chart-toppers Squeeze confirmed as the prime headline act, tickets have been selling fast for the 2nd–5th August event in the picturesque Hampshire village. One of Britain’s top bands of the past 40 years, the hugelypopular new wave icons will 40 | The LOOP

top the bill on Saturday 4th August supported by John Ilsley of Dire Straits, the Tom Robinson Band and Ferocious Dog among others. Rock legend Steve Harley has been confirmed as the main attraction on the opening night, Thursday 2nd August along with the South and the Dhol Foundation. They join Show of Hands and Kate Rusby on Friday 3rd August and folk icon Richard Thompson who closes the event on the Sunday night backed by the Undertones, the Blues Band and the Red Hot Chilli Pipers. Chegwyn added: “We are well up on sales from this time last year with many people booking even before we had announced

a single act. They trust we will always have a top quality lineup – and just as importantly the unique atmosphere will never change. “The festival has a real family-friendly feel with plenty to entertain young children as well as a great range of food, drink and craft stalls plus four days of fantastic music.” Weekend tickets are currently on sale at £140 with Under 16’s admitted half price and Under 10’s gaining free admission. A weekend camping pass is £30 and parking is free. See www.wickhamfestival.co.uk for more details.

Titchfield in Bloom In 2017 seven ladies living in the historic and picturesque village of Titchfield got together for the first time at a meeting to discuss entering Titchfield village in the South & South East in Britain in Bloom competition. The village had never been entered before in this Nationwide competition and the ladies decided to take this project on.

Receiving the award at Ferneham Hall from the Mayor. Left to right: Nicky, Pamela, Sue, Gloria, The Mayor, Coral, Jane and Julie.

There are very few front gardens in the village and many residents opened their gates as the walk continued.

Here are 5 of us planting last year from left to right Pamela, Coral, Gloria, Jane and Nicky

Apart from their enthusiasm and the encouragement they received plus a small budget the Bloomers of Titchfield as they are now known, were determined to make their mark. Titchfield had very little planting around the village and gradually the residents old and young joined in and supported the Bloomers. The local businesses in and around the village especially the Garden Centres added their support in a big way to this project. The RHS judges arrived in early July to judge the ladies on their efforts and spent 11/2 hours walking a designated route around the village. There are various categories that you are judged on with headings such as Community, Sustainability, Conservation, Recycling and Horticultural Achievement which are just a few.

In September 2017 they travelled to Sussex for the Awards Ceremony where over 400 people were gathered from the South and South East. The large village category was announced and to the Titchfield Bloomers complete surprise they were awarded Silver Gilt, apparently unheard of for a first time entry. They attended another Awards Ceremony at the Ferneham Hall in Fareham where they received an award from Fareham in Bloom entitled the Community Gardening Award for their dedication to South and South East in Bloom. The team is very grateful to all who helped them last year and they had their own awards ceremony in the Parish Rooms in the village to thank them. This year they are together again, you can spot the Committee: Gloria, Nicky, Coral, Pamela, Julie, Sue and Jane around the village in their bright green polo shirts as they have entered Titchfield village once again in this Nationwide competition and the Royal Horticultural Society judges will be visiting Titchfield village in early July. This year the team is aiming for gold and they intend to keep on Blooming in 2018.

P&O Cruises names new ship Iona as a “celebration of the sea and our island nation” P&O Cruises new ship, which will join the fleet in May 2020, is to be named Iona. In a competition held last year, over 30,000 people put forward suggestions for the name of the new 180,000 ton ship, from which a short-list was then drawn and one name was chosen. P&O Cruises senior vice-president Paul Ludlow said: “We are an island nation and as Britain’s favourite cruise line it seems very fitting to highlight one of our most notable islands and celebrate the geographic diversity of the UK, especially as we can trace back our roots to the Scottish Isles. “Iona played a significant part in shaping the history of our nation and we hope that with this very special name our new ship will shape the future of holidays at sea for generations.” The sea was a powerful force in the history of the Inner Hebridean island of Iona and is still today a crucial link to trade and a thriving tourism industry, requiring two sea crossings to reach the island.

Ludlow said: “Iona is known for its peace and tranquillity, stunning landscape and, most importantly, the view of the ocean from almost every point on the island. This mirrors our primary intention when building the ship, which was to make the sea the star. “Throughout the design process we were mindful that we were building a ship, not a hotel, and the intrinsic beauty of the sea, the vistas of the coastlines and ports of call should be at the fore and visible as much as possible from all areas of the ship.” The name was unveiled by BAFTA award-winning TV presenter Stephen Mulhern in a magic reveal set on Iona, which is protected by the National Trust for Scotland, where he was joined by several of the islanders. Spoor-ty Harvey selected for GB and is looking for a sponsor Dedicated schoolboy Harvey Spoor has been selected to represent Great Britain at the European Deaf Swimming Championships Harvey, 13, was diagnosed with hearing loss at the age of four and through the Elizabeth Foundation, at Queen Alexandra Hospital, Spoor has been able to lead a normal life and integrate into the local community. The Fareham Nomads swimmer is now training hard ready for when he takes to the water in the Europeans championships in Lublin, Poland, between 2nd and 7th July 2018. With no funding available from sports associations or the Government to subsidize the cost of attending training camps and representing GB at competitions Spoor is looking for sponsors to help him achieve his dream. Michael Spoor, Harvey’s father, added: ‘This opportunity for Harvey to represent Great Britain follows his involvement with the Great Britain Deaf swimming Club (GBDSC) at a national level since 2016 whilst training and competing for Fareham Nomads Swimming Club inclusively at a regional level. ‘The European championships are hopefully the first opportunity for Harvey to represent Great Britain with the World Championships taking place in 2019 in São Paulo, Brazil and the Deaflympics in 2021 in either Los Angeles or Dubai.’ Deafness is not recognised under the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) classifications and therefore not included in

Paralympic competitions and as such separate competitions, including the Deaflympics, are held to allow deaf competitors to compete on an equal platform. At the 2017 Deaflympics, held in Samsun, Turkey; Great Britain won seven medals in the pool out of the nine in total the overall team picked up. Michael added: “The fact that deafness is not recognised as a disability by the IPC also means that it does not attract any Government, Sport England or National Lottery funding and therefore the costs associated with attending the training camps and representing Great Britain at competitions is borne by the individuals themselves. “UK Deaf Sport has been campaigning for a number of years to the Government for a change in the funding for deaf sport to align it with other Paralympic disciplines but until there is a change deaf sports people will have to continue funding the training and representation of for their country themselves.” Harvey currently holds nine Great Britain Deaf age group long course records and seven GB Deaf age group short course records for the 13-years age group. Harvey has recently returned from the GB Deaf National Swimming Championships and training weekend at Loughborough University. He was delighted to take the 14-years and under titles in the 200 Individual Medley, 100 Freestyle, 100 Backstroke, 100 Butterfly and 100 breaststoke. The Year 8 schoolboy, at Crofton, said: ‘To swim fast and pick up five trophies was amazing, it makes all the training worthwhile. I can’t wait for the summer to compete in Lublin.” If you would like to sponsor Harvey, please email michaeljspoor@talktalk.net or visit www. gofundme.com/harvey-spoor-deaf-euro-swimming. contactus@loopmagazine.net

SPACE AGENCY UK Space Times 2018 This year so far has offered many astronomical delights for skygazers and it gets better. While amazing astronomical phenomena are in the offing, these events are just a few of celestial moments worth circling on your wall planner for 2018. July 15th: Moon Meets Venus At local sunset, UK sky-watchers should look for the thin waxing crescent moon to appear in a close encounter with the planet Venus this will take place low in the southwestern sky. Although North American onlookers will have the best view the two worlds at their closest—they will appear to be separated by less than about three lunar disks. July 27th: Total Lunar Eclipse A second chance for the year to witness the moon go dark on the evening of July 27th, when a total lunar eclipse will cross South America, Europe, Australia, Africa, and Asia. This time, the eclipse will take place about half a day after the moon reaches its farthest point from Earth. The total eclipse begins at 8.30pm BST (3.30pm ET). During this event, the moon will travel through the darkest part of Earth’s shadow, potentially making this a particularly deep total eclipse. July 2th: Mars at Its Best This year, Mars will be especially close to Earth shortly after opposition, coming within 35.8 million miles of us on July 31st. This combination means that Mars will be at its biggest and brightest since 2003, and it won’t get this close to us again until 2035. On the same date as the total lunar eclipse, Mars will seem to glide close to the moon just as it reaches its peak visibility for the year. The red planet will be at opposition, when it sits opposite to the sun in the sky, from our perspective. During opposition, Mars will look like a super-bright orange star in the southern sky. As Mars does not have a perfectly circular orbit 48 | The LOOP

around the sun, the red planet gets nearer and farther from Earth over time. While the planet will look spectacular to the naked eye, keen backyard astronomers with telescopes will have exceptional views of various Martian surface features, such as its white polar caps and dark volcanic plains. August 11th: Partial Solar Eclipse At sunrise on August 11th, a partial solar eclipse will greet skywatchers across the high northern regions of North America and Europe, as well as Greenland, Iceland, and Asia. The most spectacular views from land will be from remote sites in Russia and large portions of northeastern China, such as around the city of Harbin, where the moon will cover 37 percent of the sun a few minutes before local sunset.

UK’s space sector. Space delivers tangible benefits to everyone in the UK, improving communications, travel and security amongst much else. We will build on our successful partnership with Government to create high value jobs and growth across the UK for the benefit of all. I thoroughly commend this strategy to the Government.” Download the report from UKspace

Marsquakes from Mars

August 12th-13th: Perseid Meteor Shower Considered one of the most intense annual meteor showers, the Perseids regularly produce up to 60 shooting stars an hour at their peak. This year promises to be particularly good in terms of performance, since the peak will coincide with a dark, moonless sky on the night of August 12th and into the predawn hours of August 13th. The thin crescent moon will set during the early evening, creating excellent viewing conditions across the Northern Hemisphere.

UK space industry sets out vision for growth The Prosperity from Space strategy sets out a vision for enhanced growth in the UK space sector over the next decade. Published by the Space Growth Partnership on Friday 11 May 2018, the strategy focuses on four sector priorities: Earth information services including navigation, analytics and security; Connectivity services – global connectivity anywhere from any device; In-space robotics – for science enterprise, consumers; Low-cost access to space. The strategy aims to double the value of space to wider industrial activities from £250 billion to £500 billion, generate an extra £5 billion in exports and attract £3 billion of inward investment. Minister for Investment, Graham Stuart, said: “Too few people are aware of the success and significance of the UK space sector or its vast potential for future growth. The Government welcomes this contribution from the UK space industry and is determined to support our emergence as a commercial space service hub with an increasing global market share backed by new partnerships in science and trade.” The space sector will actively encourage diversity and inclusion in its workforce and interact with 1 million young people per year in a bid to increase interest in careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). Andy Green, Chair of the Space Sector Council and President of UKspace, added: “This sector-led strategy sets out the ambition of the companies, institutions, academics and entrepreneurs of the

A new mission to Mars, supported by the UK Space Agency: InSight will be the first to study the heart of the Red Planet. Involving Science from the United Kingdom will be the first to study the heart of the Red Planet and measure ‘Marsquakes’ from its surface. The NASA InSight mission, which stands for Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy and Heat Transport. Launching under pre-dawn skies from the central coast of California at the Vandenberg AirForce Base on May 5th, 2018 at 4.05am PDT (7.05am EDT). The mission launch period opened May 5th until 8th of June 2018 with daily launch windows, lasting 2 hours per day which were 5 minutes apart. InSight launched from Launch Complex 3 on an Atlas V-401 rocket provided by United Launch Alliance, a joint venture of Boeing Co. and Lockheed Martin Corp. The Atlas V is one of the biggest rockets available for interplanetary flight. This is the same type of rocket that launched the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter in 2005. InSight is the first mission to another planet to leave Earth from Vandenberg Air Force Base as usually launches occur from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center and fly east, over water. That’s because launching towards the east adds the momentum of Earth’s eastward rotation to the thrust of the launch vehicles. The Atlas V-401 however is powerful enough to fly south towards the sea from Vandenberg Air Force Base and it was more available at this time to accommodate the missions 5-week launch period. The launch is just the beginning of any space mission. The trip to Mars will take about six months with a mileage of around 301 million miles and landing on Mars will take place on November 26th 2018. The InSight Lander will use cutting-edge instruments to delve beneath the surface and investigate the interior of Mars to improve our understanding of how such planets formed. It will also study tectonic activity and meteorite impacts, both of which could provide valuable knowledge about these events on Earth. The UK Space Agency has invested £4 million in one of the key instruments on board; the short period Seismometer (SEIS-SP). This will be on the surface of Mars to measure seismic waves from Marsquakes. Scientists expect to detect anywhere between a dozen and a hundred of these tremors up to 6.0 on the Richter scale over the course of two years. Sam Gyimah, Science Minister, said: “The UK is playing an important role in this exciting mission to unlock the deepest secrets of our nearest neighbour in the solar system. An instrument that started life in a London university laboratory will end it on the surface of Mars detecting quakes and me3teor strikes for the first time. It’s a great example of the imp3ortance of international collaboration and our work with the space sector as part of our Industrial Strategy, to ensure the UK remains at the forefront of pioneering science and exploration.” The mission will conduct six science investigations on and below the surface of Mars to uncover the evolutionary history that shaped all of the rocky planets in the inner solar system. Father’s Day Cruise for SS Shieldhall in busy June and July schedule Southampton’s own heritage steamship, SS Shieldhall, sets sail on twelve cruises during June and July, including a Father’s Day trip on Sunday 17th June with the popular Shieldhall Stompers Jazz Band on board. Dad’s - and all visitors - are sure of a treat as alongside the live music there will be an opportunity to visit Shieldhall’s renowned Engine Room and Boiler Room once the cruise is underway. Descending down stairs, visitors can see Shieldhall’s two triple expansion steam engines go about their paces, and feel the heat of the Boiler Room where the temperature regularly exceeds 100 degrees Fahrenheit! After visiting the depths of the Ship, visitors are also encouraged to see the Bridge, where the Captain and his team control the ship, and communicate to the Engine and Boiler Room teams through the ship’s telegraphs. On the Father’s Day Cruise, there are limited opportunities to ‘toot the Shieldhall whistle’ for £5, as she passes the outgoing cruise ships Britannia, Norwegian Jade, Queen Mary 2 and Ventura. Passports are available to help children explore the ship and collect stickers from her volunteer crew at various points of interest. There is a full range of refreshments on board, including bacon baps, quiche, delicious Caymanas Rum Cakes and New Forest Ice Cream. Plus real ale from local brewery Flack Manor and Titanic bottled beers. Tickets for the Father’s Day cruise are £40 adults; £10 children and £90 for a family (2 adults / 2 children) and can be purchased online at www.ss-shieldhall.co.uk or by calling the Ticket Manager on 0844 357 2329 (calls cost 7p per minute from landline, calls from mobiles may vary). Shieldhall’s volunteers have been boosted by the announcement of her National Historic Ships 2018 Regional Flagship status – the Shieldhall so becoming the first ship to hold the distinction of holding either the National or Regional Flagship status on two occasions. A National Historic Ships spokesman noted: ‘SS Shieldhall was National Historic Ships UK’s first National Flagship in 2009. This year (which marks her 30th anniversary in current ownership), she has been awarded regional status in recognition of her continual and extensive sailing programme in the Solent area which has seen passenger numbers increase exponentially each year.’ Graham Mackenzie, who oversaw a HLF project completed on Shieldhall in 2017, was thrilled at the award: ‘There are approximately 200 vessels on the National Historic Ships Register, all distinguished by being of pre-eminent national or regional significance;

spanning the spectrum of UK maritime history; illustrating changes in construction and technology and meriting a higher priority for long term conservation. Our humble passenger-cargo vessel stands alongside such famous ships as the SS Great Britain, the Royal Yacht Britannia, HMS Victory and the Cutty Sark. What Shieldhall offers of course is the opportunity to go out to sea in a steam ship, and to get up close to Shieldhall’s ‘jewels’ – her mighty triple-expansion steam engines - as they go about their paces. It is a great credit to our volunteers that Shieldhall is still introducing the experience of steam at sea to new generations, some 63 years after she was first constructed.’ Shieldhall today is the largest operational, passenger-cargo steam ship in Britain. A member of the National Historic Fleet she serves as a sea going tribute to Britain›s maritime heritage. HMS Collingwood Volunteer The fifth Taste of Wickham Band support Mayor Making Festival Sunday 9th September 2018 10.00am - 4.00pm ceremony in Fareham Once again preparations for this highly successful event

The HMS Collingwood Volunteer Band provided the musical accompaniment during the Mayor Making Ceremony in Fareham recently. The event, which took place in Ferneham Hall, Fareham on Thursday 10th May, saw Councillor Mrs Susan Bayford inaugurated as the Mayor for the year 2018/2019. Band Colour Sergeant Dave Edwards said “After playing in the visiting dignitaries and invited guests into the hall for the annual Mayor Making Ceremony with suitable background music, the band heralded the arrival of the Mayoral Procession with something slightly different and unexpected to the gathered congregation, with ‘I am the One and Only’ by Chesney Hawkes. Not an expected choice for such a regal procession I grant you but none the less gained the approval of the gathered dignitaries and seemed to fit the opening sequence of events. This choice of music was not too dissimilar to the retiring Mayor’s choice which had to be of course ‘My Way.’” The Ceremony progressed throughout the morning with an eclectic mix of music provided by the HMS Collingwood RN Volunteer Band adding that special touch to the investiture of the new Mayor of Fareham Borough Council.

are already well advanced, stalls are being reserved, the entertainments and demonstrations planned and organised... The brightly striped gazebos always look cheerful, filling Wickham’s medieval Square to overflowing, but most people just like what they find under the canvas - stalls showing the displays of goods and services offered by the shops, businesses and organisations based in and around Wickham. Food and drink in abundance, of course, but a taste of many others – furnishings and home decoration, florists, gifts, clothing, youth and community activities... We are all becoming more and more aware and appreciative of the quality and variety of locally-produced food and drink. (Especially noticeable last year was the growth of local gin distilleries – a welcome addition to the scene for many of us!) The much appreciated programme of cookery demonstrations, generously supported once again by the Southern Co-operative, will feature several local chefs showing how to produce wonderful meals in our temporary kitchen in the large marquee, no doubt to packed audiences once again. As part of the cookery theme, we are hoping to feature a Bake-Off for local entrants. Full details will appear on the Taste of Wickham website soon. www.wickhamsquare.co.uk/tasteofwickham. The programme of children’s activities and entertainments, live music, local groups performing their musical and dancing shows keep the audiences of all ages amused and entertained. And then there are the goats – always a popular centre of attraction! The free and easy atmosphere, aided by free entry and free parkand-ride, is enjoyed by growing numbers of visitors. Aiming to make this year even better, we aim to repeat the full occupancy of the stalls again and we encourage all the visitors to visit the shops and cafes which are open in and around the Square. Ben Sawyers, Chairman of the Organising Team said: “Once again we look forward to welcoming residents and visitors to our lovely village square – not just to enjoy its medieval feeling and atmosphere, but to see, sample and appreciate the variety and range that we have to offer – many items exclusive to Wickham. “We continue to appreciate the enormous help, support and sponsorship given to us by The Southern Co-operative – without their help we would not be able to keep this a totally free event for visitors. We also very much appreciate all the (free), cheerful and generous help given by the many volunteers, whether individually or through their organisations and clubs. We couldn’t do it without you. We still need more volunteers to help both before and on The Day – so please get in touch as soon as possible if you feel you could give an hour or two of your time - or more!”

Red Jet 7 to enter the water at the end of the month Red Jet 7, Red Funnel’s new Hi-Speed passenger ferry, which is under construction by Wight Shipyard in East Cowes on the Isle of Wight, is due to enter the water for the first time at the end of May. Work on the £7m vessel is well on track, with the passenger accommodation already resiliently mounted on the two hulls and the specialist job of installing the four engines, generators and waterjets almost complete. The bridge is also taking shape with most of the electronic equipment, control systems and touch screens now in situ and ready for testing. A specialist Isle of Wight based contractor is also about to start the painstaking job of vinyl wrapping the superstructure in Red Funnel’s striking Red Jet livery, which was revealed for the first time on Red Jet 6.

Stand Up To Cancer Bake Sale The spirit of “The Great British Bake-Off ” came to HMS Collingwood recently in the shape of a “Stand Up to Cancer” fundraiser.

Judges Warrant Officer (WO) Mark Thomas and Lieutenant (Lt) Al Martin from the Apprenticeship & Education Centre had the enviable task of choosing between sausage rolls and sponges, quiches and cakes, millionaire shortbread and a splendid millefeuille, all baked to perfection.

Trainees enjoying the choice of goodies on offer.

Organisers of the HMS Collingwood Stand Up to Cancer Bake Off, Louise Bavister and Roz Wrixon.

Staff from the Royal Navy Apprenticeship & Education Centre, based at HMS Collingwood’s Ramsay Building, donated an impressive array of sweet and savoury goodies with some entered into the Stand Up to Cancer Bake Off challenge organised by Roz Wrixon and Louise Bavister. Local firms Print & Sew Station and Doing the Rounds, from Stoke Road in Gosport donated two commemorative aprons for the winners and takeaway bags respectively. 58 | The LOOP

WO Thomas and Lt Martin agreed that the standard was excellent but the winners were Richard Adey in the savoury category with his Pork and Caramelised Onion Sausage Rolls and Cathy Montgomerie who scooped the sweet prize with her Carrot Cake. Both winners are from the Coaching for Training Network team. After accepting his prize, Richard said, “I like making savoury dishes but I’ve never won a baking contest before!” Cathy added, “I like baking as a hobby and this is just a bit of fun. It’s a good thing that people will organise events like this and it’s great to raise money for charity too.” They have raised £408.61 so far for this worthy charity. Warsash Neighbourhood Forum is Coming In Autumn 2017 the Special Housing Update of the Fareham Local Plan 2036 caused a stir in Warsash. Many people felt that Warsash was unfairly earmarked for a disproportionate number of new homes. Consequently, a number of concerned people decided that we should try to prepare ourselves - and have a stronger voice - should similar overwhelming developments be proposed in the future. The 2011 Localism Act enables communities to form neighbourhood forums and neighbourhood plans to give them a bigger say in local democracy. As a result of complains about traffic, parking, housing, etc, our neighbour Titchfield established a neighbourhood forum two years ago. We feel that a neighbourhood forum in Warsash is the democratic way for us to influence future development in the village. It will enable everyone to have a voice so that we can develop a plan to ensure the village flourishes in the way we, the residents, would like. We held our first meeting with nine people in February. We had 16 people at our third meeting in March. We now have 28 members and rising. Our Constitution is being prepared. We currently have the following working groups whose work will eventually feed in to the plan: Neighbourhood Planning; Health & Wellbeing; Environment; Project Planning; Transport, Cycleways, Green Links and Hamble Ferry; Footpaths; Heritage & Historic Village; Youth Voice; Community Cohesion; Businesses; Education: Website & Social Media; and Archaeology.

Austin A30/A35 Owners Club Southampton and New Forest Group Our meetings are held on the second Thursday of each month at the Empress of Blandings near Cadnam, meetings normally start at 7.30 for 7.45pm. Our club is open to anyone who is interested in Classic Cars, and our mission is to attract new members. We have one of the best spare parts departments of any motor club. Parts are sold new, restored, and used at affordable prices helping to reduce the cost of classic car motoring. Our parts director Robert Prinn and his brother Rick are experts, and we believe the best Austin A30/A35 specialists in the UK. Our last meeting at the Empress of Blandings took place on the 10th May, another well attended meeting, and we were able to welcome new members. We enjoyed a film called RJ Mitchell and the Supermarine Spitfire Story to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the RAF. Our club continues to grow, and our calendar is packed with motoring and social events for 2018. Club members enjoyed a very memorable “Drive It Day” tour of the New Forest followed by Sunday lunch, and more recently a Skittles night which was great fun. All enthusiasts welcome. For more information go to www.austina35sotongroup.co.uk

Fareham Borough Council is very supportive. We had our first meeting with their officers in early April and they have supplied us with guidance documents. In due course we will be applying to them to designate a Forum and define the precise boundaries of our neighbourhood area. Our local councillors, Trevor Cartwright and Mike Ford have also given us their full support. So if you have ideas, and feel you would like to make a difference to the future of Warsash, please make yourself known to us and come along to events we will be holding in the future. We would like everyone in Warsash to be involved in the decision making. We are currently building a website. Meanwhile, please contact us at the following email address info@warsashforum.org Best wishes, Warsash Neighbourhood Forum.

Red Funnel sponsors Isle of Wight Day 2018 Red Funnel is financially backing an Island wide coastal beach clean from 22-23 September, which is an integral part of this year’s annual Isle of Wight Day celebrations. The Isle of Wight has 67 miles of coastline and whilst its beaches are amongst the cleanest along the south coast, plastic and other man-made debris continually gets washed ashore to the detriment of wildlife and the marine environment. The objective of the island wide beach clean is to encourage communities and visitors to help remove as much plastic and litter as possible over one weekend and enjoy some fresh sea air in the process. There’s even the chance of finding some dinosaur bones and other fossils along some stretches of coastline! Red Funnel plans to offer significant ferry discounts to people on the mainland who would like to come over and help, and it will be encouraging as many of its own staff as possible to don their gloves and assist with the clean-up. Commenting on the plans, Kevin George, Red Funnel’s Chairman and CEO said: “Isle of Wight Day is a great opportunity for local communities and visitors to rally around a single cause which was highlighted so vividly in the Blue Planet series. This is likely to be the biggest beach clean the Island has ever seen, helping both the marine ecology and the overall appeal of some of the most beautiful coastline in the south.” 62 | The LOOP

contactus@loopmagazine.net

Robin Courage, Chairman of Isle of Wight Day said: “Once again, Isle of Wight Day is the day for the whole community to come together to tell the world about this stunning place. So this year we are encouraging everyone to join in the country’s largest ever beach and coastal clean-up over the weekend of September 22nd and 23rd. Let’s celebrate our 67 miles of beautiful beaches and coastal paths by ridding them of the unwanted waste that the seas have dumped there.” To find out more about Red Funnel’s Isle of Wight Day offers please visit www.redfunnel.co.uk/beachclean.

Community News Fareham College students host Memory Café to help local people with dementia

Health and Social Care students from Fareham College are helping local people with dementia through the college’s Memory Café. Every Friday morning from 10.30 – 11.30am, people living with dementia are invited to join students over a cup of tea and a slice of cake to take part in fun and engaging conversations and a variety of activities, including arts and crafts, board games, card games and quizzes. The Memory Café allows students to put their skills into practice in a safe place, offers carers a break and people with dementia the opportunity to laugh, joke, have fun and engage with a variety of people in a wonderfully welcoming environment.

Stephanie Couper, HCE Lecturer and Curriculum Area Lead at Fareham College, who helped setup the Memory Café, said: “The Memory Café builds bridges between generations, which is lovely to see and it is something we are seeing more and more of recently, where nurseries and care homes are teaming up to provide intergenerational care. There is always a lot of laughter during the sessions here at Fareham College, and a lot of people with dementia are really benefiting from the interaction; remembering old memories and feeling happy and positive. “We hope the local community will make the most of our Memory Café and we hope to see lots of new faces there soon.” Local Gosport gentleman, John Jacques, has lived with dementia for the past two years. He recently attended the Memory Café at Fareham College and gave a talk to the students and staff about his craft of wood turning. His wife, Pam Jacques, spoke about John’s experience: “The Memory Café allowed John to engage and interact with people of a different age, who he usually wouldn’t get the chance to talk with. He completely came out of his shell during the session when talking about his old skills and showing the bowls to the students. He was laughing and seemed so happy. It’s not often we get to see this side of John anymore – the café really helped him.” The Memory Café runs every week, on a Friday morning from 10.30 – 11.30am, term time. The sessions are open and available for people to just turn up and get involved. To find out more about the Health and Social Care courses available at Fareham College, visit: www.fareham.ac.uk/courses/level-2-diploma-inhealth-social-care/.

Local community buy all Items on wishlist for QA Childrens Ward An Amazon wish list, which was made up of over 200 items of toys, clothes, arts and crafts and books has been bought by the local community in just a few days. Staff from the Children’s Department at Queen Alexandra Hospital are extremely thankful to everyone who has purchased items from the list, as the items will now be distributed to the children being looked after there.

Claire Roberts, Sister on the Starfish Ward who organised and managed the list said, “I was told about wish lists by a nurse friend whose ward had already set one up. I thought it was a really simple idea and Some Paediatrics wish list items. could see how our children’s wards could benefit from it. Many of our parents ask us what they can give to say thank you, and it’s often difficult to think of things on the spot, and to be sensitive of price. With the wish list, families and friends could go to Amazon and choose something that they would like to buy us. “We have been bought items from baby socks to phone chargers, hot chocolate for the parents and board games. Personally I have been overwhelmed by the generosity shown, and this is going to have a massive positive impact on our unit.”

Our next step is to compete in the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain on 15th September at The Centaur at Cheltenham! And moving to 2019, we will be competing in the 3rd Section, following our success of promotion from this years Regionals Contest. Congratulations from us at LOOP Magazine, and with their recent success in mind, Gosport Solent Brass would like to invite you all to their first concert of 2018!
