The dark days of winter naturally lead us to think about light. Perhaps in particular, light in our gardens. Port and Lemon supports UK Marine Conservation via charity partnership with Sea-Changers Port and Lemon has become the latest business to form a partnership with the marine conservation charity, SeaChangers. Sea-Changers supporters can now raise money every time they spend over £10 on the Port and Lemon website by simply using the code SEACHANGERS at the checkout.

This action will save the customer 10% on their shopping basket total and Port and Lemon will generously donate 10% of the sale price to Sea-Changers.

Port & Lemon design home items, gifts and cards that have a quirky mix of nostalgia and wit that is inspire by the sea. Their range of contemporary home and gifts is bold, colourful and produced in the UK, and designed by Tracy Evans and Kate Cooke in their Hampshire studio.

The money will feed into Sea-Changers’ grant fund which is distributed to UK based marine conservation projects. SeaChangers is a charity with a simple mission: to give back to the sea. The charity is run by volunteers who develop bespoke partnerships with businesses that care about the marine environment, with the aim of raising money for a UK based marine conservation fund.

Sea-Changers distribute the donated money, in accordance with their funding policy, to a range of projects engaged in: direct marine clean up action, education and awarenessraising about marine conservation issues, species and habitat protection, and conservation research. Many of the projects funded undertake grassroots community conservation work that simply would not take place without the Sea-Changers grant.

Since being set up in 2011, Sea-Changers has awarded over 120 grants to projects right around the UK.

Some examples of the projects that received funds in 2018 are: • Basking Shark Scotland who will be running a series of clean ups in the remote islands of Argyll transporting their volunteers via ribs and an inflatable dinghy.

• Shetland Amenity Trust who are using the funding to produce a film about the UK’s successful voluntary litter pick which involves 20% of Shetland’s population volunteering to clean its beaches and coastlines annually.

• Environment Plymouth will be running local workshops (Plastic Surgeries) on the dangers of plastic pollution and the alternatives available for local traders.

• Plastic Clever Salcombe’s ‘Kids Against Plastic’ campaign, which will empower children to help make change in their community and reduce the ‘big four’ plastic polluters.

Grateful patient raises money for the ward that saved her life Carolyn Edginton has raised an amazing £689.77 for the Critical Care Ward at Queen Alexandra Hospital, Cosham.

Carolyn raised the money, by taking part in ‘The Drop’, a daring leap from a 25 metre high platform at the Spinnaker Tower in August, after the Ward saved her life from Sepsis in January 2017.

Before the event, Carolyn said, “I wanted to do something to raise funds for the Ward that saved my life. I was admitted to the Critical Care Ward in January 2017, with what ended up being Sepsis. I collapsed in hospital ready for a routine appointment on January 5th 2017 in Surgical Outpatients. I had no idea I was so poorly, but my organs were railing due to the Sepsis and I needed the support of the Critical Care Team to keep me alive.

I was in hospital from 5th January, in a coma for 21 days and came out on 10th March in a wheelchair, after my family were 6

told that I wouldn’t survive three times. However thankfully I did!

I am still seeing a Consultant now; however my three boys are my lifeline and without them I wouldn’t be here. When you’re that ill you don’t really remember much, but my family have told me how unwell I was. Now I’m fit again I want to give something back and do something that highlights the brilliant work of the QA Hospital Teams.”

Next year, Carolyn will bravely be taking part in the Spinnaker Tower abseil to raise funds for the Renal Department, who she is also hugely thankful to.

“We Will Remember Them”

by Peter Ridley, Alan Inder and Tony Kippenberger Amid the national commemorations for the centenary of the end of the Great War, the small town of Bishop’s Waltham has recorded the stories of its sixty-one servicemen who laid down their lives in this “war to end all wars”.

“We Will Remember Them”, written by Peter Ridley, Alan Inder and Tony Kippenberger, is published by the Bishop’s Waltham Society at £8.99. The 156-page book is packed with details of the men, their families and the war itself. With more than 50 photographs, it captures the effect that this brutal conflict must have had on the men and women of a quiet rural town in Hampshire.

The Bishop’s Waltham servicemen signed up to many different kinds of service on both land and sea, their common bond being that they all lived in or near a town of about 3,000 people.

A town that had a brewery, nine public houses, five butchers, five bakers, two banks and two blacksmiths. A town whose families were closely linked by kinship and marriage and one that would directly feel the loss of so many of its young men.

The youngest was just 16 when he was killed.

The town’s first fatal casualty died of his wounds near Merville in November 1914 and the last died at his mother’s house in July 1919. Five men lost their lives on the same day at the Battle of Jutland, two families lost three of their sons during the course of the war. The men fought on the Western Front, at Gallipoli, in Mesopotamia, in Serbia and Italy.

Peter Ridley conducted extensive research and has written biographies of all these men. While originally focused on the names recorded on the town’s War Memorial, the work also took into account two Rolls of Honour commemorating those who died in the Great War, one held in Bishop’s Waltham Museum and the other on the wall of the local church, St Peter’s.

Alan Inder is the instigator and overall editor of the project.

He has also written about the main cemeteries and memorials where these men from Bishop’s Waltham are buried or commemorated.

They lost their lives fighting in a conflict that was seen at the time as the biggest war the world had ever known. It was fought on many separate fronts between many different nations, on land, sea and in the air. Tony Kippenberger provides a brief background to the Great War and explains the different military fronts on which these men fought.

This gives the reader a context for the battles and actions in which they laid down their lives.

The book tells the stories of where the men and their families lived, where they fought and how they died.

It’s hard to imagine the impact their deaths would have had on a small market town. Throughout the book are war poems chosen to reflect not just those who gave their lives, but also those who lived with the consequences of this terrible conflict. This book remembers them too.

UK College of the Year to lead one of 21 Maths Centres for Excellence in the UK

The maths Centre for Excellence that Fareham College will spearhead will comprise a network of post-16 providers.

Fareham College, the TES UK College of the Year, has been appointed as the ‘exceptional post-16 institution’ to lead one of the new 21 Centres for Excellence for mathematics in the UK. The news was announced by the Secretary of State for Education, Damian Hinds MP at the Conservative Party Conference in Birmingham this week.

The £40m programme has been invested to support the post-16 sector to improve maths teaching across the country.

It will be rolled out over five years and is expected to create new and enhanced teaching approaches for maths, through best practice sharing.

The Fareham College Centre for Excellence will comprise:

Eastleigh College; Isle of Wight College; Southampton City College; Sparsholt College; Havant & South Downs College; St Vincent’s College and Highbury College. It will also be supported by the Hampshire Inspection and Advisory Service, and the Pioneer Teaching Alliance.

Andrew Kaye, Deputy Principal of Fareham College, commented: “We are delighted that we have been successful and look forward to working with our network to make the programme a success. Maths is a vitally important academic discipline, but there are many students who struggle to get enthusiastic and engaged with the subject. Spot On Productions are searching for the next stars of the stage for ‘Bugsy Malone’.

Chart-toppers Gilbert O’Sullivan and Ralph McTell are among the first acts announced for the 2019 Wickham Festival The pair – two of Britain’s top singersongwriters – will provide a fantastic finish to the festival on Sunday August 4.

McTell is best known for his classic ballad Streets of London while O’Sullivan had a Number One hit with Clair and made the top three with Alone Again (Naturally).

They join the hugely popular Level 42 who have already been confirmed as headliners for the Friday night.

Originally from the Isle of Wight, they have a string of hits including Lessons in Love and Something About You. And with a huge name ready to be confirmed for the Saturday night, the line-up is already looking one of the strongest ever.

Organiser Peter Chegwyn said: “We are absolutely thrilled to be welcoming Gilbert O’Sullivan and Ralph McTell who will be a perfect fit for us and will be a great way to bring down the curtain on another wonderful weekend.

“But the most important thing about the event is the unique atmosphere which remains the same, prompting so many to come back year after year.

“The festival has a real family-friendly feel with plenty to entertain young children as well as a great range of food, drink and craft stalls plus four days of fantastic music.

Funeral Myths busted Continuing our theme from the last article we discuss some of the myths associated with the funeral industry. Funerals are a tough subject to deal with, whether it is your own you are seeking to arrange or on behalf of someone else. One of the hardest parts of the funeral is the arranging of it and this is made more complex by the number of myths and misconceptions many of us have about the entire process.

Myth - you must pay a charge if you move a body over county borders. This is incorrect, although you do need to notify if you plan to take a body outside England and Wales - so if you are in England and want the funeral in Scotland, you would need to notify the appropriate local authorities.

Myth - burial in a cemetery or cremation at a crematorium are the only options. Even this isn’t completely true - you can also opt for a private land burial. This is a relatively straightforward approach that removes many of the restrictions placed by cemeteries but does require some forward planning.

Myth - a hearse is compulsory to move a body. This isn’t the case. All you need is a vehicle large enough to carry the coffin and people to help you move it at either end of the journey.

Myth - A minister needs to say the committal. This depends on whether the ceremony is religious or not, but in line with there being no rule about having a ceremony at all, there is no law that a minister is required.

Myth - Curtains must close at the crematorium at the end of the service. This is untrue. There is an argument that drawing the curtains helps with closure at the end of the service, but many families prefer leaving the curtains open to enable them to pay their very final respects.

Fear is the barrier that stops so many people from doing what they love, trying something new or achieving their potential.

Workout descriptions WORKOUT 1

1 Push up Jacks In a standard push up position, lower yourself down and you hop your feet out wide. Jump them back in on the way up like your lower body is doing jumping jacks.

Often it’s a fear of not fitting in or being afraid that other people will judge them for trying something new or taking a step out of the crowd.

Whether its a type of exercise you like, starting out on a new adventure of some sort or even just beng loud and having some silly fun with your kids in public.

2 Jumping Lunges Start in a lunge position making sure your knee doesn’t extend far in front of your knee. Explode up and switch legs in mid- air, landing softly in a lunge on the other leg.

When I started this whole Average Geoff thing 2 years ago I was well aware that heckling and some teasing would come my way and also that some would see a negative side to it.

This did not and still does not deter me. I know what I want and what I enjoy doing.

If you feel scared of others views, ask yourself ‘Why am I doing this?’ The answer should raely be just to fit in. Be brave, Be bold, Take that step, be a bit mad, do the thing you want to do and stop being so scared of what other people think at the sacrifice of your own life.

Other people’s thoughts about you are just their perception.

It does not make it a fact.

Once you stop worrying about the perception of others and move towards things you enjoy, something amazing happens. Your outlook changes, your ability to see opportunity changes and suddenly you’re not afraid anymore.

So get up and take active steps towards what you enjoy and what will benefit you. Perception is not always fact!!

WORKOUT 1

3 Squat Thrusts Think of this like a really easy version of a burpee. From standing, crouch down and put you weight through your arms, thrust your legs out into a plank position and then reverse the movement.

Standard HIIT workout of 4 seconds work and 15 seconds rest for each movement. Repeat the cycle for 3- 5 rounds, depending on your ability and available time.

WORKOUT 2

20 seconds of each movement with no rest between the three. After you’ve done each of the movements for 20 seconds each, take 20 seconds rest and repeat for a total of 10 rounds.

1 Feet elevated mountain climbers Raise your feet onto a bench and get into an elevated push up position. Bring one knee to yur chest and return to the start, alternate sides with speed but also good form.

5 Bench dips Place your hands on the bench with your back to it.

Put your legs out straight and keeping your back near the bench, lower yourself down and push back up. You can bring in your legs to make it simpler.

2 Hop overs With your hand either side of the bench, stand on one side of it. Explode with both feet together over to the other side of the bench and repeat.

Chocolate almond energy balls (recipe below) 3 Hands elevated push ups Like a normal push up, keep your elbows in by your sides but with your hands on the bench.

Sunday is a great day to get a few foodie bits prepped for the week to help you stay on track and away from the biscuit tin. Plus, they’ve got the added bonus of a little energy boost to help you push through.

These balls are super easy to make and taste really rich and chocolatey. Trust me, go and make these now!!!!

Ingredients:

4 Step ups Put one foot on the bench and drive up until your hips are fully extended and your other foot joins your first. Step down with your first leg and alternate sides.

400g Dates 200g Ground almonds 1/4 cup Chia seeds 2 tbsp Cocoa 2 heaped tbsp of Nut butter of choice 2 tbsp flavourless oil (I used coconut) Flaked almonds (optional)

Method: Soak the dates in water for about an hour. Drain them and stick them in a blender and blitz to a smooth consistency.

Add in everything else apart from the flaked almonds and mix until you get a thick dough.

Roll into balls about the size of a walnut.

If using the flaked almonds, roll the balls in them and press in a little. If not, skip this step.

Whack them in an airtight container and they’ll stay good for a few weeks.

Fareham Town Youth Girls Football Team Kick Start Girls Football in Fareham!

After setting up the new team we are seeing more girls coming along to start their footballing journey with us.

Currently we now have 18 girls playing or just attending training and we are still looking for more girls to join us on our journey.

Whether your daughter has played before, or looking for a new challenge then you will be more than welcome at our club.

We currently play in the Under 14’s league, so if your daughter is school year 8 or 9 she will be eligible to play for us.

The girls are enjoying the training sessions and are really keen to improve, Gemma Hellier from Fareham Academy and ex Portsmouth player has kindly come along and taking a training session with the girls which they loved and her support was much appreciated.

Our first outing as a team we got to a final of a summer tournament and we won our first game of the season in the newly combined Hampshire Girls Youth League and although we have come up against some really strong established teams the girls are improving every game.

Support from the local community is growing and local firm ‘Carpetzone’ have kindly sponsored the girls training kits which look great.

The coaches Simon and Rees are now on their Level 2 in Coaching Football course so that they can deliver improved training sessions and further improve the girl’s techniques and ability.

Could you become a Girlguiding volunteer - helping today’s young girls reach their full potential?

Girlguiding Itchen Valley Division covers Hedge End and Botley, already enabling 460 girls in 18 units to experience the fun and adventure that guiding offers. We currently have five Rainbow units (age 5-7), seven Brownie units (age 7-10), five Guide units (age 10–14) and one Ranger unit (age 14-18), which is fantastic!

BUT all our units are full and have waiting lists, so more leaders are desperately needed to support the existing units and allow new ones to be opened.

Housing is expanding rapidly in this area, set to grow by 4000 homes in the next 10 years. All of the new girls this brings deserve access to Girlguiding and the life changing experiences and rewards that it offers.

We are looking for: Uniformed volunteers – you need to be 18 or over, undergo a DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check and will be given training in first aid, safeguarding and leadership skills.

Non-Uniform volunteers – you need to be 18 or over and undergo a DBS check. You will be given assistance as needed and can support a unit in many different ways, such as unit helper, treasurer etc.

Right now, we desperately need to open a new Rainbow and Guide unit, followed by other units for all ages in the near future.

But we can’t do this without volunteers – could you help?

Maybe you and a friend could take on a new challenge together?

Being a volunteer in Girlguiding offers so many opportunities and rewards, for you personally and for the girls. It is a safe, all-girl environment, where they take part in a very varied programme.

What they do in Guiding stays with them as they grow into adults. They develop the skills and confidence needed to reach their potential - as students, colleagues, parents, friends and citizens becoming the young women they want to be.

Trio claim medals at Europeans Three Fareham Nomads swimmers took to the podium to represent Great Britain at the European Masters Championships.

John Molyneaux, Laura Molyneaux and Noémie Plumridge, all swimming in the 30–34 age category, were masterclass at the prestigious international event in Kranj, Slovenia.

Irish-descendant John, 30, put on an impressive display claiming gold in the 200-metre backstroke in a Masters personal best time of 2.11.94, two seconds ahead of the rest of the field.

The former head coach of Nomads hit the 50m backstroke touch pad second in a time of 28.58.

John also achieved fourth place in the 200m individual medley in a time of 2.14.94, which was a Masters personal best time and just over a second outside of the British Masters record for his age group.

Noémie, 31, was presented with a bronze medal for her remarkable display of 30.59 in the 50m butterfly.

The French-born swimmer also took on competitors in the 200m butterfly to finish seventh in a time of 2.42.18.

Laura, 30, swam a Masters personal best time in the 400m freestyle to claim a silver medal in 4.41.61. The following day her second silver medal in the pool came in the 200m backstroke in a time of 2.29.39 - missing the gold by just nine hundredths of a second.

Laura also swam in her first international open water race and finished fourth by a second in the 3,000m event in a time of 36.33.8.

Masters coach Stewart Crowe said: ‘Fareham Nomads Masters swimmers are among some of the best that I have had the pleasure to coach during my long connection with the club.’

Windows 10 Support Info, an Adobe Reader update and some Photography Apps.

Oh, and finally, the promised Music Player recommendation…

In this edition of Computer Know How, we are going to be covering some information about maintaining your support status on Windows 10, telling you about an important security update if you use Adobe’s tool to read PDF files, and introducing you to a couple of cool free photo apps. And we will finally get you the lowdown on the brilliant free music player and organiser that we promised last issue, but it failed to make the cut.

Windows 10 Updates

In the last edition of Computer Know How we opened the topic of the Windows Lifecycle and provided some information about Windows 7 and Windows 8.1. The newest Windows for Home users is Windows 10, and Microsoft is committed to supporting it until 2025 - but the caveat is that you need to apply updates to maintain the supported status. The oldest supported version as of now is Windows 10 version 1709 and the current version is Windows 10 version 1809.

You can check the version you are running by typing About in the Type here to search box Microsoft release Windows updates twice a year for Windows 10 via the Semi-Annual Channel (SAC), targeting March and September. Updates are cumulative, with each update built upon those that preceded it; you should always install the latest feature update (version), before your current version reaches end of service, to remain supported by Microsoft.

Because the updates are cumulative, they get larger, so please be patient in allowing the update to be downloaded and note that your computer will need to reboot for the update to complete.

Adobe Acrobat Reader DC

This is a very commonly used application for reading PDF files, so very many of you will have it installed. Adobe has recently released security updates for Adobe Acrobat Reader for Windows to resolve an important vulnerability. Successful exploitation could lead to an inadvertent leak of the user’s hashed password. Adobe recommends users update to the latest version. Run Acrobat Reader and choose Help > Check for Updates.

Musicbee

In the last edition the headline mentioned a new Music Player recommendation, but there ended up being insufficient space to include the detail. So, now, here it is: MusicBee is a freeware media player for playback and organization of audio files on Microsoft Windows 7, 8 and 10. There is also an option to synchronise with your Android device, where you can then control playback with your preferred Android App. Importing your music library to MusicBee is easy, and if you currently use either iTunes or Windows Media Player there’s a simple wizard.

The appearance is customisable, and the capabilities include using your Android phone as a remote control, and even synchronising the colours on your Philips Hue light!

This product is rated 5 stars by trusted review sites. Techrader describe it as “a brilliant free music player and organizer” and TechSupportAlert, make it their “editor’s choice” and describe it as a “musical Swiss Army Knife” with “excellent tagging and music managing features”.

Hambledon Vineyard Best Harvest Hambledon Vineyard is preparing itself for its best grape harvest to date, but this success story has not happened over night. As the oldest commercial vineyard in England, Hambledon is steeped in historical importance, with Hambledon village also being known as the cradle of cricket.

Major General Sir Guy Salisbury-Jones first established the vineyard back in 1952 with the help of the Pol Roger family, and at this time produced dry, still wines until the vineyard changed ownership in the 1970s. Sadly, the vineyard fell into disrepair until 1999, when Ian Kellett purchased the house and the vineyard.

Following essential soil and climate analysis, Ian decided to replant with the three grape varieties most commonly found in the Champagne region â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, to return Hambledon Vineyard to its former glory. Today, Hambledon makes approximately 100,000 bottles of NV English Sparkling wine a year in the traditional method from 25 hectares on pure chalk and is working towards a 1 million bottle production, purely from estate grown fruit, within the next 20 years.

£1,000 donated to special Southsea cause A support service for people facing desperate situations in Southsea has been gifted with a cheque for £1,000.

Colleagues at Southern Co-op’s new funeralcare branch in Albert Road, Southsea, celebrated its opening last Wednesday [14th November] and announced their new charity partner, The LifeHouse.

Fareham College’s innovative Civil Engineering and Groundworks Apprenticeship (CEGA) was created in response to a regional skills shortage.

Fareham College has been shortlisted for the Tes FE Award 2019 for Apprenticeship Programme of the Year. The awards recognise the most outstanding individuals and institutions that the FE sector has to offer.

Tes FE editor Stephen Exley said: “Excellent practice exists right across the further education sector, and those shortlisted for the Tes FE Awards are the cream of the crop. Our judges were extremely impressed with the calibre of entries.”

“We had more entries for this year’s categories than ever before, and the standard was higher than ever. To be shortlisted is an extraordinary achievement.”

Nigel Duncan, Principal of Fareham College, added: “At Fareham College we recognise the important role apprenticeships play in supporting industry and equipping young people with the confidence and technical skills to succeed in the workplace. In recent years, we have invested significantly in apprenticeships provision, which has resulted in nearly 1000 apprentices now studying annually at the College.”

The charity is a kitchen, resource and support centre that serves hot food in Albert Road, Southsea, with an aim to show ‘there is a way out’ and ensure everyone has the opportunity to improve their situation through the variety of care and services on offer.

Mike Morell, Chair of Trustees at The LifeHouse, in Southsea, said: “We are so glad to partner with the Co-operative Funeralcare as their chosen charity partner of the year as they are such a close neighbour and an organisation with an unparalleled reputation.

The innovative Civil Engineering and Groundworks Apprenticeship (CEGA) was created in response to a regional skills shortage resulting from an aging workforce, a boom in new-build projects and current insufficient levels of training, all believed to be hindering civil engineering growth and expansion in the south of England.

To tackle the problem head-on, a group of 11 local civil engineering employers set up the Solent Civil Engineering Employers Group (SCEEG) in conjunction with Fareham College to create a training programme that would address these issues, support the construction industry across the region and beyond, and have a positive economic impact through creating more job opportunities.

The result of this collaboration has been the design of a purposebuilt civil engineering training centre comprising a two-acre simulated construction-site, tailored to the delivery of a specialist employer-led Civil Engineering and Groundworks Apprenticeship programme.

The curriculum enables participants to develop the skills needed to work on a variety of construction sites, and get paid a competitive wage while gaining a recognised qualification. Surrounded by the resources, machinery and materials found in fully operational building sites, apprentices are based at the Civil Engineering Training Centre (CETC) for a 20-week initial training period to ensure they are ‘site ready’ and armed with the relevant skills, certifications and licences to hit the ground running when they fulfil the rest of their apprenticeship with one of the consortium’s member employers. It also incorporates ride on roller and forward tipping dumper training. The Centre will be delivering a wider range of training programmes for the civil engineering industry when phase two opens in 2019.

The winners will be revealed at a gala awards evening at the Grosvenor House Hotel, Park Lane, London on Friday 22 March 2019.

100 years of Remembering our Fallen Heroes Warrior’s story as a short play and included WW1 songs including ‘It’s a Long Way to Tipperary’ and ‘Keep the Home Fires Burning’ to sing along with their special guests. Elderly visitors to the school remarked that it was a pleasure to see the children perform and ‘the emotion and enthusiasm shown by the young actors, no more than 10 years old, caused many a tear to fall’. They also enjoyed reflecting on the service afterwards with a ‘good old cup of tea and cake’ with some of the staff and children.

The pupils have also been fighting their own battle with the war on plastic by making poppies out of old plastic bottles.

Pupils at Hook-with-Warsash C of E Academy invited members of the local community to a special Remembrance service commemorating 100 years since the end of World War One. The children told the true story of Warrior the War Horse who served on the frontline in many key battles during World War One. Warrior was a bay thoroughbred who was born in the Isle of Wight and owned by Jack Seely. He was trained to charge as part of the cavalry and carried Jack safely at the frontline in many key Battles during World War One including the Battle of Ypres and the Battle of Passchendaele in which Warrior became entrenched in deep mud but was dragged out by the soldiers around him. He became known as ‘The horse the Germans couldn’t kill’.

When Warrior returned from the war he took part in parades all across the country and in 1922 he won the Isle of Wight Point to Point race. In 2014 a bronze statue of Warrior was unveiled at Carisbrooke Castle in the Isle of Wight. Sailors and staff throughout HMS Collingwood today said a fond farewell to Commander David Johnston, Executive Officer at the Base since January 2016.

Navy and civilian colleagues lined Collingwood’s Royal Sovereign Avenue to wish Commander Johnston well as he marched to the Main Gate where he ceremonially handed over the cane to his successor Commander Mark Walker.

Commander Johnston said, “It has been an absolute privilege to have undertaken the role of Executive Officer in HMS Collingwood. The highlight has always been the people, with 7% of the Royal Navy here on any given day, from those just joining from HMS Raleigh or BRNC to the senior Commanding Officers’ Designate Course and all the Warfare and Weapon Engineer career and training courses in between. I wish Commander Mark Walker every success in this fascinating and rewarding role and I have no doubt he will enjoy his time here as much as I have.”

respected aviators. He recently served in Navy Command with particular responsibility for the delivery of the Landing Platform Helicopter Initial Operating Capability in the Queen Elizabeth Class carriers.

Fareham College students take Navy fitness tests A group of students from Fareham College visited HMS Collingwood recently to undertake some Navy-style fitness tests.

The group were all studying for the College’s Extended Diploma in Uniformed Public Services which gives a flavour of life in the three Forces and Police disciplines. As part of this course, the students were put through their paces by HMS Collingwood’s Physical Training Instructors (PTIs) at the Establishment’s Sports and Recreation Centre.

The aim is to introduce the students to the Basic Fitness Tests new recruits to the military would face which gives students a good idea of their own basic level of fitness.

Firstly, they tackled the official Royal Navy Swim Test with an impressive number of the group passing first time. They then entered the sports court where they competed against each other

to achieve the greatest number of press-ups, followed by sit-ups all within a fixed time limit. From there they went straight into a 1.5 mile run around the Base, encouraged and supported by the PTIs all the way.

Danny Thomas accompanied the group and said, “Some of the group are returning to HMS Collingwood after competing in the Junior Leaders’ Field Gun Competition at the beginning of July.

Fareham College has really good links with HMS Collingwood and the PTIs are superb, they’re very busy but very accommodating to us.”

Ben Hall, one of the students, took a moment from his fitness test to explain why he had enrolled on the course. He said, “I’d like to be a Royal Navy mechanic, like my grandfather.

I’m really enjoying this today. It gives you an idea of what to expect when you join up.”

Louanne Sprigg agreed, saying, “I want to join the Royal Navy too and this means you get to experience a bit of what Navy life will be like.”

Volunteers from The Women’s Royal Naval Service Benevolent Trust (WRNS BT) visited the Base with multiple stalls providing a range of mouth-watering goodies ranging from lemon drizzle cake to chocolate brownies, carrot cake to cupcakes and for those looking for the perfect gift, Christmas cards and books written by WRNS were available.

One of the most successful sales was held in the Chaplaincy which is where Leading Hand Brendan Antenbring decided to treat his class of nine sailors, hard at work on a Leading Engineering Technician to Petty Officer course, to a whole carrot cake!

Lieutenant Commander Jane Pitzii joined the Royal Navy in 1989 and was on hand to encourage personnel to part with their money for such a great cause. She said, “As well as this annual cake sale and other events including Open Day here at Collingwood, we also have a presence at HMS Sultan’s events.

This doesn’t just raise funds but also raises awareness of the Trust and what we do.”

Sales were also held in HMS Collingwood’s Wardroom, the Main Gate and the Sports and Recreation Centre and raised a total of £746.88 for the charity.

HMS Collingwood host South Korean Naval Officers A group of South Korean Officer Cadets were welcomed to the Royal Navy’s largest training establishment when they visited HMS Collingwood recently.

The Cadets first received a brief from staff at the Royal Naval Leadership Academy, outlining how personnel are trained and mentored in leadership techniques, both through classroom teaching and via the Academy’s Low and High Ropes courses.

The group then split into two, with one group visiting HMS Collingwood’s state-of-the-art simulator in the Navigation Training Unit. Using nine screens on a cylindrical wall, this offers an immersive 270° experience, providing training to personnel from a wide range of disciplines. It can simulate all weathers, sea-states and accurate geographical features from around the world. The Cadets learned how it has recently been used extensively to train the crews of the new QEC carriers enabling them to hone their skills on a virtual Bridge before taking control of the actual ships.

The Cadets observed how a shell is fed through the feed system arriving in the gun turret. They also visited the Phalanx Close Range System where Chief Petty Officer Dave Howie delivered a comprehensive system brief including the history and development of the system.

The Cadets were impressed by the simulated aircraft engagement which concluded with a drill firing demonstration. They appeared enthused and asked plenty of questions during this part of the visit.

Warrant Officer Engineering Technician (Weapon Engineer) Mark Stevenson accompanied the Cadets throughout their visit and said, “Having visited South Korea with the Royal Navy it was interesting to interact with the Korean Cadets and note the interest they took in a very comprehensive demonstration of equipment’s and capabilities.”

The Cadets were from training ships ROKS Chungmugong Yisunshin and ROKS Dae Cheong and the visit to Collingwood formed part of a four-day stopover in Portsmouth.

WRNS delight sailors with festive bakes

The Women’s Royal Naval Service Benevolent Trust was formed in 1942, its objective being to provide relief in cases of necessity or distress among its members and their dependants.

Although the Women’s Royal Naval Service was disbanded in 1993, the WRNS BT continues to help over 230 families each year, spending in the region of £300,000.

SPACE TIMES January 3, 4 - Quadrantids Meteor Shower: The Quadrantids is an above average shower, with up to 40 meteors per hour at its peak. It is thought to be produced by dust grains left behind by an extinct comet known as 2003 EH1, which was discovered in 2003. The shower runs annually from January 1-5. It peaks this year on the night of the 3rd and morning of the 4th. The moon will be a thin crescent and should not interfere with what could be a good show this year. Best viewing will be from a dark location after midnight. Meteors will radiate from the constellation Bootes, but can appear anywhere in the sky.

January 6 - New Moon: The Moon will located on the same side of the Earth as the Sun and will not be visible in the night sky. This phase occurs at 01:28 UTC. This is the best time of the month to observe faint objects such as galaxies and star clusters because there is no moonlight to interfere.

January 6 - Venus at Greatest Western Elongation: The planet Venus reaches greatest eastern elongation of 47 degrees from the Sun. This is the best time to view Venus since it will be at its highest point above the horizon in the morning sky. Look for the bright planet in the eastern sky before sunrise.

January 6 - Partial Solar Eclipse: A partial solar eclipse occurs when the Moon covers only a part of the Sun, sometimes resembling a bite taken out of a cookie. A partial solar eclipse can only be safely observed with a special solar filter or by looking at the Sunâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s reflection.

The partial eclipse will be visible in parts of eastern Asia and the northern Pacific Ocean. It will be best seen from northeastern Russia with 62% coverage.

January 21 - Full Moon, Supermoon: The Moon will be located on the opposite side of the Earth as the Sun and its face will be will be fully illuminated. This phase occurs at 05:16 UTC. This full moon was known by early Native American tribes as the Full Wolf Moon because this was the time of year when hungry wolf packs howled outside their camps. This moon has also been known as the Old Moon and the Moon After Yule. This is also the first of three supermoons for 2019. The Moon will be at its closest

approach to the Earth and may look slightly larger and brighter than usual.

Total Lunar Eclipse. A total lunar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes completely through the Earthâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s dark shadow, or umbra. During this type of eclipse, the Moon will gradually get darker and then take on a rusty or blood red color. The eclipse will be visible throughout most of North America, South America, the eastern Pacific Ocean, western Atlantic Ocean, extreme western Europe, and extreme western Africa.

January 22 - Conjunction of Venus and Jupiter: A conjunction of Venus and Jupiter will be visible on January 22. The two bright planets will be visible within 2.4 degrees of each other in the early morning sky. Look for this impressive sight in the east just before sunrise.

February 4 - New Moon: The Moon will located on the same side of the Earth as the Sun and will not be visible in the night sky. This phase occurs at 21:03 UTC. This is the best time of the month to observe faint objects such as galaxies and star clusters because there is no moonlight to interfere.

February 19 - Full Moon, Supermoon: The Moon will be located on the opposite side of the Earth as the Sun and its face will be will be fully illuminated. This phase occurs at 15:53 UTC. This full moon was known by early Native American tribes as the Full Snow Moon because the heaviest snows usually fell during this time of the year.

Since hunting is difficult, this moon has also been known by some tribes as the Full Hunger Moon, since the harsh weather made hunting difficult. This is also the second of three supermoons for 2019. The Moon will be at its closest approach to the Earth and may look slightly larger and brighter than usual.

February 27 - Mercury at Greatest Eastern Elongation: The planet Mercury reaches greatest eastern elongation of 18.1 degrees from the Sun. This is the best time to view Mercury since it will be at its highest point above the horizon in the evening sky. Look for the planet low in the western sky just after sunset.

Marsquakes’ mission successfully lands on Red Planet

A couple of issues ago, LOOP’s very own Space Times UK ran a feature on a unique mission to Mars. And it has successfully landed, sending back images and will soon begin the first study of the heart of the planet. Artist’s impression of the InSight landing phase.

The NASA InSight mission supported by the UK Space Agency landed at 19:53 GMT on Monday, 26 November. The probe will study the inside of Mars to learn how planets, moons and meteorites with rocky surfaces, including the Earth and its Moon, formed. The lander’s instruments include a seismometer to detect ‘Marsquakes’ and a probe to monitor the flow of heat beneath the surface of the planet.The UK Space Agency has invested £4 million in the short period Seismometer (SEIS-SP).

This will be on the surface of Mars to measure seismic waves from Marsquakes. Scientists expect to detect anywhere between a dozen and a hundred of these tremors up to 6.0 on the Richter scale over the course of two years. InSight carries three instruments designed and built in the UK as part of the seismic package. These microseismometer sensors were developed by Imperial College London and integrated with electronics built by the University of Oxford. The UK team is led by Professor Tom Pike at Imperial, who designed the sensors to withstand the shock and vibration of the launch from Earth and landing on Mars. The sensors can detect motion at sub-atomic scales with the help of the electronics built at Oxford under Dr Simon Calcutt, with support from STFC RAL Space. Prof Tom Pike said: “We were able to turn on the microseismometers during the cruise to Mars and they performed perfectly, showing they survived the rigours of launch as they left Earth. But every landing on Mars is risky and we were waiting nervously at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) to get the first signal back from the successful landing.”

The lander will take several weeks to deploy two of its three instruments, the seismometer and probe on to the Martian surface. The UK will have a team of instrument scientists from Imperial and Oxford at JPL in California to help with this process, including selecting just the right spot for the robot arm to deposit the seismometer. Prof Pike added: “We should be listening for Marsquakes for at least two years, and we hope considerably longer. It is critical that we set down the instrument in the best place to ensure we’re stable, and then follow up with adding a cover to shield our sensors from the wind.”

The instrument team will be joined by UK seismologists from Bristol, led by Dr Nick Teanby, Imperial, led by Professor Gareth Collins, and Oxford led by Dr Neil Bowles, to analyse the data from all of the mission’s instruments. Dr Neil Bowles, from the University of Oxford’s Department of Physics, said: “The InSight SEIS-SP seismometer is one of the most sensitive and challenging instruments we have worked on for spaceflight in Oxford. After launch in May and successful instrument checks during the cruise to Mars, the team are absolutely delighted to witness the landing. We’ve shown that a traditionally delicate scientific instrument is capable of being launched on a rocket and the next challenge is to see how it behaves on the surface of the planet.” “With our partners at Imperial College London, STFC RAL Space and the UK Space Agency, getting the SEISSP seismometer assembled and qualified for flight has been a significant effort. After nearly a decade of preparation, building and testing we are incredibly excited that the science ca now start.”

The mission, which took off from California in May this year, will conduct six science investigations on and below the surface of Mars to uncover the evolutionary history that shaped all of the rocky planets in the inner solar system. Anna Horleston, a researcher at Bristol University, said: “I’ve studied seismic data from all over the world but to get the chance to study data from Mars is just something else. To finally see it arrive and to get to test out our techniques on real Martian seismic data is so exciting.” The UK instrument will work together with seismometers from France, as well as major contributions from Switzerland, Germany and the US. Other instruments on board include RISE, a precision radio tracking of the lander that can determine the direction and motion of the rotation of Mars and the HP3 (Heat Flow and Physical Properties Probe) which will study heat flow by embedding a temperature sensor under the surface of Mars.

Ingedients: 2 tbsp olive oil 2 carrots sliced 2 celery sticks diced 1 onion diced 6 garlic cloves sliced Sea salt and black pepper Half a glass of dry white wine 1 pint of chicken stock 1 and a half pound of of skinless chicken breast and thighs 1 pack of egg noodles Half a squeezed lemon 2 tsp on dill 2 tsp of flat leaf parsley

Method: 1 Heat oil in a large pot or Dutch oven over medium heat.

Add carrots, celery, onion, and garlic. Season with salt and pepper. Cook, stirring occasionally, until softened and golden brown, 8 to 10 minutes. Add wine and cook until syrupy, 1 minute. Add chicken stock and chicken pieces. Season with salt and pepper. Bring to boil over high heat. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer until chicken is cooked through, 40 to 45 minutes.

2. Remove chicken; shred thighs with two forks and chop breasts into large bite-size pieces. Return meat to pot; discard bones.

3. Add noodles to soup and cook, stirring often, until tender, 6 to 7 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in parsley, dill, and lemon juice. Season with salt and pepper.

Lobster thermodor - serves 2

Ingedients: 250ml milk 3 bay leaves ½ small onion, thickly sliced 6 black peppercorns 1 cooked lobster (about 750g) 45g butter 15g plain flour 50g shallots, finely chopped 120ml dry white wine 1 tsp English mustard 1 tsp chopped fresh tarragon 1 tsp chopped fresh chives 1 tbsp double cream (optional) Pinch of cayenne pepper 40g Gruyère, finely grated

Method: 1. Put the milk, bay leaves, onion and peppercorns in a small pan. Bring to the boil, then set aside for 10 minutes for the flavours to infuse.

2 . Meanwhile, remove the meat from the cooked lobster and cut it into small, chunky pieces. Keep the tomalley (the grey-green liver) and any roe separate. Put the cleaned out half-shells in a small baking tray. Preheat the grill to high.

3. For the sauce, reheat the milk gently. Melt 20g of the butter in another small pan, stir in the flour and cook for a few seconds. Strain in a little of the hot milk and whisk until smooth. Gradually whisk in the rest of the milk, bring to the boil, then lower the heat and simmer for 5 minutes, stirring now and then. You should be left with 200ml sauce with the consistency of thick cream.

4. While the sauce is simmering, melt the remaining butter in another small pan, add the shallots and cook gently until soft but not browned. Add the wine, turn up the heat and simmer rapidly until the liquid has almost disappeared. Stir in the white sauce, together with the mustard, tarragon, chives, cream (if using), cayenne pepper and 25g of the grated cheese. Season to taste with salt and black pepper.

5. Stir the lobster meat into the sauce, with the tomalley and any roe if you wish, then divide the mixture equally between the cleaned half-shells. Sprinkle with the remaining cheese, slide under the grill, then cook for 3-4 minutes until golden and bubbling. Serve with new potatoes and a light, green salad. contactus@loopmagazine.net

Teachers, parents, volunteers and children at Orchard Lea Junior School, Fareham picked up their trowels to give the school grounds a make-over last week.

Making the most of the autumn sunshine and outdoor opportunity a group of willing volunteers created different areas of the school grounds into interactive sensory spaces where children can learn and play.

Mrs Wildern who teaches year 3 pupils at the school organised the day’s activities with the help of Deputy Headteacher Mrs Thornbury.

They structured the learning benefits to dovetail with the curriculum. Teaching children to take responsibility for their surroundings and the environment.

Overgrown and out of bounds

Mrs Wildern added; “We are so grateful to the parents and volunteers who have supported the project and delighted at how well the children reacted to getting involved. They really loved it and showed a great deal of pride at the end results.

“I think we covered a multitude of key learning skills, from working together, sharing and caring for the environment and showing how by working together we can make a real difference.”

Deputy Head Teacher Mrs Thornbury concluded; “Having a supportive group of parents and volunteers behind this kind of project is priceless. Thank you to all the staff and children for their hard work too.”

Personal Assistants (PA) in Care New website to link paid carers with local vacancies People looking for a rewarding career in Hampshire can now register on a new website that puts them directly in contact with those seeking a Personal Assistant (PA) in Care.

Caroline Larkins, Claire’s former PA in Care, who is now a Social Worker with Hampshire County Council, said: “I cannot list the amount I have learnt these past three years.

I may no longer be Claire’s PA but she will forever be my friend.

“What you learn can lead you anywhere, skills applicable to life in general. You are not only changing Claire’s life but also yours. It’s not just a job, it’s supporting a friend.”

A PA in Care is an important and caring role to support someone to live an independent and active life. Their exact tasks vary depending on the needs of the person for whom they care, but could include help with washing and dressing, preparing meals, driving or household tasks such as cleaning and laundry.

More and more people are managing their own care needs by taking control of their budgets and directly employing either full or part time PAs in Care.

The Hampshire PA Finder website, which has been designed and created by NHS West Hampshire Clinical Commissioning Group, Hampshire County Council, voluntary sector partners and individuals and their families who already use PAs in Care, will link PAs in Care with people who want to employ them.

Klodjan Merkaj is currently one of Claire’s PAs. He said: “Before becoming a PA in Care I had worked in residential care homes for 10 years. I would never change this for anything in the world.”

Local woman, Tracey Yeomans, has won a place in the prestigious final of Mrs Galaxy UK Local woman, Tracey Yeomans, has won a place in the prestigious final of Mrs Galaxy UK. Hamble lady makes it to finals of Mrs Galaxy UK, Tracey recently won the title of Mrs Southampton Galaxy. This means that she will be competing in the grand final in March with women from all over the country. Tracey spoke to LOOP Magazine: “I am super pleased to contact you to say I have made it to the finals of Mrs Galaxy UK and will be representing Southampton in March with a chance to win an all-expenses paid trip to Orlando to compete in the internationals next year.

“As part of my year as a finalist, I am hoping to get involved within the community and help raise awareness at local events provide assistance, support local charities, and want to get as involved as possible.”

Tracey mentioned that she has done a fair bit of charity work in the past and often coordinated events at a residential home for approximately 2 years, including fish & chip lunches, pamper evenings, quiz night’s and cabaret shows. Tracey added, “I miss doing this and now my little boy is not so much a baby anymore, I’m hoping to be able to find things to fulfil my need to bring happiness to people’s lives in whatever ways I can.”

Tracey was so shocked to have made it to the finals, although is so excited to represent her home City and looks forward to all the charity work and involvement that comes with the title.

The winner of Mrs Galaxy UK will travel to the USA with contestants from all over the world to compete in the International final. Stepping into a new year holds the promise of a new start, tantalising on the tongue with the potential of what could be. For our wardrobes, we can make our own set of resolutions a great one to start with would be to shop smarter and shop less, to collectively reduce the impact of fast fashion on our planet. It’s an ironic issue to bring up in a shopping column, I’m aware, but one that bears mentioning nonetheless.

Immerse Yourself in Japan

Think Japan and up pops images of geisha, sushi and neon-lit mega cities. Maybe sake too and a tea ceremony. Whatever images Japan inspires you, it’s safe to say that they will be uniquely Japanese. It’s one of the great joys of travelling there, that cultural uniqueness and the fact that the unique culture is so incredibly rich. It’s also wonderfully easy to immerse yourself in that’s why it’s not really about seeing Japan, but more about experiencing Japan!

Why is Japan’s culture so unique?

Japan was one of the few countries in the world that was never colonised by Europe. In fact, between the 17th and 19th centuries, Japan completely isolated itself from the rest of the world. These long years without outside influence, many fascinating traditions developed and over time became so deeply ingrained in the culture that they still remain very much a part of modern life. When Japan was brought back into a rapidly modernising world in the 1850s, it dived straight in and is today one of the world’s most technologically advanced countries. So, in combination with these old traditions, you have an ultra-modernity that has inspired vast forests of skyscrapers, cutting edge technology and colourful, often wacky, youth culture.

So, how do you experience Japan?

Japanese culture is so easy to find and immerse yourself in – it’s still so much a part of everyday life. People still worship at ancient temples, geisha still entertain, people still dress in kimonos for special occasions and everyone still eats traditional, seasonal food. But they also travel by bullet train, many live in huge modern cities, go to robot restaurants and maid cafes, dress up as their favourite manga characters and sing karaoke. What’s more you can do all that too! Here are our favourite places to experience Japanese culture:

Tokyo

Japan’s capital city might look like the ultimate modern mega city, and it pretty much is, but amongst the sky-

city. Here you can explore the 8th century Todai-ji and meet herds of friendly Sika deer – in the Shinto religion they are believed to be messengers of the gods. There’s also a traditional Japanese garden, Isuien, to wander, a space so full of meaning and philosophy it’s hard to believe!

Mt Fuji

Japan’s most iconic sight, the perfectly symmetrical cone of Mt Fuji is not only visually impressive but an essential element of Japanese culture. It has long been worshipped by Buddhists, as a gateway to another world, by Shintoists as the very spirit of nature, and by the written word and paint brush of many a writer and artist. It is also an essential element of any trip to Japan to look upon Mt Fuji and revel in its spectacular natural surroundings.

When’s the best time to visit Japan?

Japan is a destination that can be visited year-round, but we recommend spring or autumn. With the spring comes the beauty of the cherry blossoms (though be warned, this needs to be booked well in advance) and a wonderfully festive atmosphere as the pink blooms are celebrated! Autumn brings splashes of vibrant fall colour to parks, temple gardens, forests and beyond, a sight that is equally as magical.

Japan is a hot destination right now but come 2019 and 2020, with two major sporting events taking place on its soil, it’s going to get even more popular! Imperial capital for over 1,000 years, Kyoto is the best place to discover traditional Japan. You can explore temples and shrines such a Kinkaku-ji, Fushimi Inari-taisha. In fact, any of the city’s 17 UNESCO-listed monuments, to get a taste of the past before thoroughly immersing yourself in it with a few of the many experiences that you can do here. Take part in a tea ceremony, learn the art of origami and eat kaiseki; you can even dress up as a geisha – what better way to understand the significance of each?

Hiroshima and Miyajima

A world famous name for a tragic reason, we recommend Hiroshima because it perfectly represents the nature of the Japanese people. Almost completely rebuilt after 1945, it is a friendly, cheerful and forward-looking city that is a pleasure to explore. Take time to reflect in the Peace Memorial Park and definitely try okonomiyaki! The holy island of Miyajima, just a short ferry ride away, home to the famous Itsukushima Shrine, is well worth a visit too!

Screen Time: How much is too much?

Cwtch Education is a charity dedicated to educating children, and those who care for them, about how to keep safe online and in relationships; including cyberbullying, self-esteem, social media use, exploitation and gaming.

We know from working with parents and teachers that they are increasingly worried about the time children are spending on technology. Research has shown that it’s not just the amount of time that is spent on devices that’s important, but what they are using it for and whether they are being responsible and maintaining a healthy balance.

What can you do?

Many parents with very young children have told us that they use TV and tablets to entertain children while they are getting on with chores or need a bit of peace! The NSPCC and AAP have studied the effect of screen time on the speech/language, social and psychological development of pre-schoolers. They suggest that babies shouldn’t have any intentional screen time at all and those aged two to five should only have supervised access to age specific apps and TV programmes for around an hour a day.

• Set a good example to your children. If you’re on technology all the time, don’t be surprised if they end up doing the same.

Technology can be used in lots of amazing ways by school age children, but they should be made aware of the accompanying pitfalls. TV, reading, and listening to music are all passive activities that aid relaxation but too much can result in less physical activity and fresh air! Interactive use such as browsing, creative apps and gaming can develop certain knowledge and skills but also result in exposure to unsuitable content and inappropriate material and cause sleep problems. Communication can be improved using video and social media, but this can increase the risk of online grooming and often leads to friendship issues, bulling and feeling under pressure to look or behave a certain way.

• Talk with your child about the amount of screen time they have, how they use it and create a plan for what would be healthy. This will depend on their age and may have to change as they get older.

• Plan device free times and create screen-free zones i.e. bedrooms/dining table. This will improve family communication and quality of sleep. Only having devices in family spaces has been shown to reduce the risk of grooming, access to inappropriate material and cyberbullying.

• Set Parental Controls and firewalls for blocking and monitoring content and limit when devices can be used.

Swimming

LHSS competed as a team in the Club Championship’s held at Waterlooville on the 12th, 13th and 20th of October 2018.

Many of the team were new to the squad and to competing.

In total the team entered 132 swims resulting in an impressive 82 personal bests and 5 club records.

Amongst them they all successfully won numerous gold, silver and bronze medals.

A special mention goes to the young Girl only age 7 Ella Harrison, she secured gold in her 100 IM and 25 fly, silver in 50 breast and bronze in 50 free. Congratulations on the medal’s but also secured 3 club records in the 25 fly, 50 breast and 100 IM. Joshua Beads worth (8) also new to competing managed to win 3 medals in total, gold in 25 fly and 100free and silver in his 50 free.

He too managed to secure a club record in the 100free.

For the older children Amelia Ayling (13) was on form winning a total of 5 medals, gold in her 200 fly, 200 back, 100 and 400 free and silver in the 50 free, she also successfully managed a new club record in the 200 fly.

It was a successful day for many of our swimmers as not only was it a first for many but also the first time many were awarded medals.

Medals were awarded for the first time to the following swimmers, Mia Bryne 9 and under gold in 50m back and silver in 50m freestyle.

Finley Taplin 9 and under won 5 golds in 400 free, 50 free, 50 breast, 50 fly and 50 back. A fine young boy that is showing great potential.

Ruby Goddard (10) is proving to follow in her sisters’ successful footsteps and won gold in 200IM, 400 free, 50 breast, 100 breast and 50 free.

Rebecca Pike 13/14 age category won bronze in the 100 breast.

Eva Beaudro (10) won gold in her 100m free.

Josh Henderson won bronze in 400m free.

Katie Jones bronze 50m breast and silver in 100m breast.

Young Lucy Selby has waited 2 years for a medal from swimming and then along came 5, training and persistence is paying off.

Lucy won gold for 400m, 100m, 50m free and silver for 100m and 50m breast.

Medals or not Lynda Reid was proud of each and everyone of her swimmers, keep up the good work kids! A long yet fun and successful weekend with some great results.

Sunday 4th November proved to be yet another successful day for LHSS who travelled to Haslermere to compete n the Autumn Sparkler Meet.

The swimmers were well and truly on form as they completed a total of 89 swims resulting in winning 2 gold, 7 silver and 11 bronze medals.

An impressive 4 personal bests and 2 more Hampshire qualifying times.

Young Daisy Smith (10) is growing in confidence and has been training hard, this was rewarded on Sunday when she not only won her first ever medal silver in the 50 free races but also secured herself an HQT. Mia Day (13) also managed to secure an HQT in the 200free also earning second place. Mia also won silver in the 100IM, and bronze in 100 back.

Toby Ellis (10) is another swimmer that’s improved recently, he is going from strength to strength. Another good day of swimming, 2 gold in 100back, 200 free, 2 silver in 50 back, 100IM and bronze in 100 free.

Sisters Grace and Ruby Goddard were on form, Grace (13) winning bronze in 50 back, 50 free, 100free and 100 IM, Ruby (9) winning silver in 50 back.

Taylor Collins (14) won bronze in the 50 back, Finley Taplin (9) bronze in 50 free, Toby Godwin (10) bronze in 100 free and Scott Hutin (13) bronze in 100 IM. Joshua Beaudro (14) won silver in 100 back and bronze in 200 free.
