award winning kitchen makeovers

After Makeover

Upto 50% cheaper than a new fitted kitchen

Before Makeover

We had several quotes & design suggestions from other companies before meeting Ben. From the first meeting we were impressed with Ben’s understanding of our needs & he gave us excellent practical ideas. We particularly liked that he was able to show us samples there and then, without the need to visit a show room. Dan & Mitch (our fitters) were brilliant- they were friendly, respectful of our home, involved us in decisions along the way and, without doubt, made the process far less stressful than we imagined it would be! We have been recommending Happy Kitchens to everyone we’ve shown off our fantastic new kitchen to. Thanks so much guys - Mr Fog

At Happy Kitchens, we offer a wide range of makeover services ranging from replacement worktops, kitchen doors, splashbacks, hinges and wirework to new appliances and much more. We also offer new kitchen design and installation services too.

Fareham College ranked best for learner satisfaction in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight The UK’s College of the Year, Fareham College has ranked top, amongst FE Colleges in the Hampshire and Isle of Wight region, in the FE Choices Learner Satisfaction Survey 2017 to 2018. The survey, which measures learners’ satisfaction with learning and training funded by the Department for Education, revealed that Fareham College’s score was the ninth highest of 170 providers (General FE, including tertiary colleges) nationally, and the highest in the region. Speaking about the results, Nigel Duncan, Principal at Fareham College, said: “Student satisfaction is something that we consider as a true measure of our College’s performance. We want to ensure that every student leaves us feeling ready for whatever direction they wish to take, but also that they made the right choice in choosing us to help them get there. This survey shows that our students are particularly happy with the way they are taught, which is testament to the fantastic teaching and support staff who I feel very privileged to work with.” The learner satisfaction survey can be downloaded from GOV.UK: https://www.gov.uk/government/ statistics/fe-choices-learner-satisfaction-survey-2017to-2018

Autumn Stars

of

Est. 45 years

Titchfield

We are right in believing many of the plants that are now lighting up our borders, are deeper reds, mauves, yellows and oranges such as asters, Rudbeckia, Sedums and Achillea. Yet, there are still plenty of plants and shrubs about that provide the lighter colours of summer. These include the beautiful and delicate Japanese Anemones in pale pinks and white with is yellow centre. It is such a fair flower, somehow it seems that it must surely belong in the borders at the height of summer, rather than alongside the darker blooms of sedum, aster or golden rod. Also, further pale hues include white, pink and blue hydrangeas along with phlox, garden pinks, and roses. All these will last until the first frosts. Autumn bedding will see you through the winter months for colour. There is plenty to choose from including winter pansies, violas, cyclamen and bedding dianthus. These come in a wide range of colours from the paler shades of white, pink and yellow to deeper hues of red, purple and blue. The perennial aster will fill your borders with wonderful lilacs from lavender blue to white or hazy blue. These masses of tiny daisies are a real treasure at this time of year and it is no wonder that aster means ‘star’ in Latin. And remember, autumn is the ideal time for planting fruit trees, roses and hedges as it enables plants to settle in happily in the soil, still warm from the summer sun, before winter sets in.

Nomads Launch Bid For New School Pool Fareham Nomads is launching a bid to build a new swimming pool to secure the future of the club in the Borough of Fareham. Since 1974 the club has used the swimming pool at West Hill Park School, in Titchfield, for the training and development of members, from learn to swim to world record holders. However, due to the age of the pool and increasing repairs it has become necessary to forward plan. Emma Rowsell, Chair of Trustees for Fareham Nomads Swimming Club, said: ‘Forty four years later and the swimming pool at the school is becoming old, resulting in ever increasing costs to maintain the necessary standards. ‘The pool is also coming towards the end of its useful life. As the pool is the main training location for Fareham Nomads if nothing were to be done then the future of the club could be at risk.’ The club aims to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to swim and currently has over 250 members, including more than 200 local children. Mrs Rowsell approached West Hill Park School to ascertain the viability of building a replacement pool within the school grounds. The school governors reviewed this as a concept and are in agreement in principle to releasing a parcel of land for this purpose subject to the school having full access rights during the school day for its normal activities for pupils. Fareham Nomads will fully manage the new pool, providing swimming lessons and coaching to its own members, local residents and other groups outside of times used by the school and club. Mrs Rowsell added: ‘Fundraising will be a large focus in funding the development of the site and this will fall under the control of Fareham Nomads Swimming Club. ‘West Hill Park School will also plan to undertake its own fundraising, linked to its centenary, with a view of providing additional funds to purchase items for the internal fabrication of the new build. 6

contactus@loopmagazine.net

‘This is an exciting development of a much-improved swimming facility for the club, school and local community.’ If the project proceeds with the appropriate planning and fundraising endeavours, the new pool will enhance further the school’s outstanding facilities and the development of the pupils under its care. It will also boost the growing reputation of Fareham Nomads as the go-to competitive club in the area and allow them to provide swimming lessons to a greater number of children. It will also continue to allow access to a swimming pool for a much wider section of the community and give Fareham Nomads the opportunity to expand our activities to reach a much bigger audience. For further enquires regarding fundraising or sponsorship opportunities, please email chair@farehamnomads.co.uk. If you would like to make a donation to our charity you can do so at https://mydonate.bt.com/charities/farehamnomads.

Café Bar Re-Opens At Nuffield Southampton Theatres

Officers’ Association Sword Awarded To Kent Sailor

Nuffield Southampton Theatres (NST) today announces the opening of the café bar Tyrrells at its new venue, NST City with award winning chef to the stars Jay Geddes in the kitchen. The new look theatre café bar will be serving healthy seasonal Hampshire food designed to mix and match and share.

Sub Lieutenant (SLt) Edward Timpson was recently awarded the Officers’ Association Sword by Britannia Royal Naval College as he begins his deployment at HMS Collingwood, near Fareham in Hampshire. The award of the “Officers’ Association Sword” from Britannia Royal Naval College is presented annually to the Officer Cadet who has demonstrated the strongest adherence to the Naval Service values and ethos during Initial Officer Training.

Southampton chef Jay Geddes has cooked for Adele, Rihanna, Beyoncé, the England national football team and the royal family. He has also worked at some of the south’s top restaurants and hotels and is a keen advocate of local produce. At Tyrrells, he has designed a menu of mix and match small plates divided into land (meat), sea (fish) and earth (anything grown naturally) with many choices for vegans and vegetarians. Jay Geddes, Chef at Nuffield Southampton Theatres said “I have designed a menu featuring small plates which can be enjoyed and shared when time is short; at lunchtimes and just before a performance. With this concept, I can also change the menu regularly and seasonally. All of our food is made fresh and sourced from a small radius, within 25 miles. ” NST City opened earlier this year in February. The venue in its first seven months of operation has sold over 35,000 tickets and received national critical acclaim for its NST productions The Shadow Factory, Streetcar Named Desire and SS Mendi Dancing the Death Drill. NST’s current world premiere production, Women in Power (running till 29 September) is a musical comedy. NST runs NST City alongside its existing theatre, NST Campus, on the University of Southampton’s Highfield Campus. For full menu and table reservations visit nstheatres.co.uk

Sub Lieutenant Edward Timpson is presented with the Officers’ Association Sword by guest of honour Admiral Sir Philip Jones KCB ADC, First Sea Lord, Chief of the Naval Staff. Edward, originally from Sandwich in Kent, joined the Royal Navy in 2009 and is currently based at HMS Collingwood as a Weapons Engineering Officer. He has previously served aboard HMS Turbulent, conducting anti-piracy and counter narcotic operations in the Arabian Gulf and was also involved in operations off the coast of Libya during the conflict in 2011. Furthermore, as part of the Royal Navy Presentation Team Edward has worked hard visiting schools to inform the general public of what the Royal Navy does for them. He cites his best deployment as service on a submarine east of the Suez Canal as it allowed him to put all the training he’d received into practice in a job that he acknowledges very few people get to do. Thanks to his job with the Royal Navy, Edward has also visited India, Bahrain, UAE, Portugal and Greece.

It will see one hundred Veteran and Serving Personnel walking the

hundred miles from the Menin Gate in Ypres and arriving at the Centotaph in London in time to take part in the National Service of Remembrance on Sunday 11th November. The walkers will be taken to Ypres and will then need to cover 25 miles a day to get back to London, staying with host families along the way. The first leg, Ypres to Dunkirk is especially poignant, spanning as it does two of the most important locations of both World Wars. There’s also a family connection for David as his grandfather served at Ypres during World War I as a driver and David has subsequently read of his shocking experiences in his wartime diaries. David said, “I wanted to do the walk because he fought there and also because being an ex-serviceman myself, it’s good to support these charities. Also, you don’t often get to walk down the Cenotaph and the camaraderie will make it fun. There will be lots of banter and the walk itself is very well-organised for such a large distance.” Haig Housing was created in 1916 and exists to provide practical housing assistance and advice to Ex-Service personnel and/or their dependents. David is hoping to raise £1000 to help the Charity’s efforts and donations can be made via Justgiving account ‘DavidWheatley6’ and just follow the ‘donate’ section. He added, “With my personal connections through my grandfather, Albert E Winchcombe to the conflict and with the upcoming commemoration, it’s a very personal thing for me to do.”

Christmas Parties at The Race Centre If you’re wondering how to improve on last year’s office Christmas party, then look no further than The Race Centre in Chandler’s Ford. The facility is home to 10 fully linked professional racing simulators, each with full driving controls and whopping 3 metre HD projection screens! More races follow, with the aim of getting as much track time as possible.

Do you know anyone who is lonely, isolated or just in need of a helping hand? Could they benefit from some help and companionship? In an ideal world we would all take the time to care for the older people around us. But the truth is, despite our best intentions, these people are often the first casualties of our busy lives. Now there’s a way to ensure they no longer have to face days alone with just the TV for company. Our carefully vetted, lovely Companions will visit them, taking the time to listen, fill their days with chat and activity and help with practical needs. We help people remain independent by providing friendship and assistance at reasonable rates, which are far less than those of traditional Care companies, typically £16 per hour.

Funeral Planning Myths: When someone needs to make funeral arrangements for a loved one or a friend, it is the funeral directors role to guide them through this process. Without being patronising or trying to sell things they don’t really need, they must ensure all the relevant options are covered. During this process the family rightly ask a lot of questions and I thought it would be helpful over the next couple of submissions to discuss briefly some of the myths that we get asked about from time to time, (and some quite a lot!). Myth 1 - Funerals have to cost a fortune - This is very current. Shop around, ask around. It’s not easy when you’re bereaved but visit a couple of funeral directors to see what they’re like. We are all different, we don’t all charge the same, and sometimes there’s a very good reason for that. If anything costs are coming down at the moment. So try to be a bit critical and understand what you’re getting. Myth 2 - Funeral directors need to do everything. Increasingly families are becoming more involved and not just doing the flowers and carrying the coffin. A friend of mine recently arranged her father’s funeral with minimal help from me. Myth 3 - Embalming is compulsory. While there are sometimes benefits embalming is not compulsory and is usually an additional cost. Your funeral director should discuss this with you. It should not be seen as the solution to a perfect chapel visit. (See 7) Myth 4 - The ‘Ashes’ aren’t genuine. The cremation takes place in a

single cremator, which is cleared after each cremation. They are as genuine as they can possibly be. Myth 5 - Funeral Directors sign the official secrets act (I really have been asked this). As much as I would like to be James Bond, NO. Myth 6 - An open coffin chapel visit will provide closure. There is no standard ‘need’ that everyone experiences the same way. Some will feel the need to say their final goodbyes. Others would prefer to remember them how they were. There really is no such thing as a silly question so feel free to ask us mail@ahfreemantle.co.uk or we’ll cover further myths next time.

MOVEMENT DESCRIPTIONS Dumbbell workout

Summer is slowly backing out the door and the days are getting chillier and soggier with growing frequency. This can leave many of us wanting just a little bit more time seeking refuge in the fortress of our duvets from the calling of life! I am often heard saying ‘Get up, get out and get it done!’ and I stand by that. However, sleep is a too often underrated currency that we short change ourselves on. It should come as no surprise that sleep is vitally important to our bodies and minds for growth, repair and development. This is the time when the true magic happens and you get stronger, faster and most importantly, recharge. Too many people get too little sleep in exchange for ‘just one more episode’ on Netflix or getting lost in a sea of social media. Sleep is not just about quantity but also about quality. If you set yourself up for success and commit to a routine, something wonderful happens. You feel more rested, you’re able to focus more and perform better.

Bench press - Lay on a bench and hold the dumbbells in line with your upper chest with your palms facing towards the feet end. Plant your feet wide to provide a support base and then push the weights up until your arms are extended. Lower the weights under control back to the start.

This month challenge yourself to get better sleep with some of these simple changes. If you’re not ready to implement all of them, try to change at least a couple and build on it over time. 1. Turn off the TV The band of blue light emitted by TV sets can act like a trigger to signal the brain to stop producing melatonin, a chemical produced in the brain to help regulate sleep. Turning off the TV 30 minutes before going to bed can help reduce this effect. 2. No phones in the bedroom Mobile devices can have the same effect as TV. There are a growing amount of studies to show that the blue light filter you can get in newer models have little or no effect on the blue light effect. The other factor is having your phone right there is a temptation to go scrolling. Before you know it, an hour has disappeared and you have little more that sore eye and a cat meme to show for it!

Front Squat - Start with feet shoulder width apart and the weights rack by your shoulders. Squat down, keeping your heels on the floor, until your hip crease goes lower than your knee. Make sure not to let your knees fall inwards. Keep your glutes contracted and push back up.

3. Dim the lights Try to visualise how humans existed thousands of years ago. We didn’t have electricity and we lived our days mostly on the cycle of the sun or low lights like candles. Turn off your big lights in the evenings and get some lamps or dimmer switches to help you wind down. 4. Ditch the caffeine You don’t need to be told this but it’s a hand reminder on the effect of caffeine. If you’re using it to wake up in the mornings, its easy to see what effect it will have taking it in the evening. Ty to limit your caffeine intake during the day but ditching it altogether at least 6 hours before sleep. Have a great month and I’ll leave you with this. Get to be early so you can get up, get out and get it done!

Bent over row - With feet shoulder width apart, Bend over, keeping your back flat. Imagine you’re on a rowing machine and draw those weights up towards your chest before lowing under control back to the start.

Workouts Dumbbell workout Choose a fairly light weight but one that challenges you. This is a high repetition workout where you’ll be moving a lot. Perform each movement for 45 seconds and rest for 15 seconds. Rest for 60 seconds between rounds and perform 3-5 rounds depending on your time and ability. Bodyweight workout Choose from one of three levels. This will be the repetitions you do of each movement except for the low plank which is the seconds you hold the movement for. Overhead Press - Start with feet shoulder width apart and the weights rack by your shoulders. Press the weight up and overhead until your arms are fully extended.

HEALTH & WELLBEING Hanging Knee Raises - Whilst hanging from a pull up bar, depress your shoulders and get into position as if you were going to do a pull up. Draw your knees up towards your chest and lower back down under control. Don’t swing in this movement, its strict form and good control all the way.

Renegade row - Start in a pushup position with a dumbbell in each hand and feet shoulder width apart. Keep you back flat and body tense whilst you row one dumbbell. Lower and repeat on the other side.

Box Jumps - Find a suitable box that is secure and safe to jump on. Squat down a quarter depth and explode up to jump on top of the box with both feet flat. Stand up on top of the box so that your hips are extended and then step down and repeat.

Reverse Lunges - Start with feet shoulder width apart and weights own by you sides. Take a step backwards with one foot and into a lunge. Make sure to keep your core braces and control the front knee. Don’t allow the knee to go past the toes. Bodyweight workout

FOOD

Spicy Breakfast Hash Fire up your taste buds and your day with a brekkie of champions. You can chop everything up the night before and sling it in a pan in the morning to make it super easy when you’re walking around with a zombie on! Bodyweight row - Find a low bar or paralette and get into a position as in the first image with hands shoulder width apart. Pull yourself towards the bar until your chest touches it. Make sue to stay tight and keep your core contracted and tense throughout.

Shoulder tap Push up - Perform a standard pushup but at the top of each movement, take one hand off the floor and touch the opposite shoulder under control. Alternate sides.

Ingredients: 75g mixed peppers 20g chopped chorizo 1 spring onion, chopped 130g sweet potato, peeled and cut into small chunks 2 eggs 1/2 tsp smoked paprika Pinch of chilli flakes 1/2 tsp oregano Method: Whack the sweet potato in a microwave for a couple of minutes to soften up. Meanwhile, mix the peppers, onion and chorizo together in a pan on a medium heat. Add the potato, herbs and spices and mix well. Now create a hole in the centre and crack the eggs in. You can pop a lid on at this point to help the eggs cook faster. Plate up and tuck in!! Protein: 21 / Fat: 21 / Carbs: 36 contactus@loopmagazine.net

It’s Time to Celebrate Hamble Sailing 22

MAGAZINE

Hamble River Sailing Club (HRSC) will be 100 years old in 2019! We are thrilled to share the news that the Hamble River Sailing Club (HRSC) will commemorate its Centenary in 2019. With so much to celebrate, we have organised a year of festivities under the theme ‘Then. Now. For Future Generations’. Past and present members will come together through events and activities, on and off the water. Together we will reflect upon our achievements, make plans for future generations and raise the profile of sailing on the River Hamble. The programme will kick-off

at the end of November with an evening review of the last 100 years of HRSC. Photo credit: Paul Wyeth/pwpictures.com

“We are really looking forward to bringing everyone together to reflect on our achievements and inject new momentum into supporting sailing at all levels and for all ages on the River Hamble,” comments Stephanie Merry, Commodore at Hamble River Sailing Club. “We have come a long way since our ambitious and humble beginnings in 1919. It is a privilege to have this opportunity to mark this special occasion, improve club facilities and support a growing talented membership.” From humble beginnings to a thriving sailing community HRSC was founded in 1919 by seven Hamble men to ‘encourage the sport of small boat sailing and racing’ for the parishes along the banks of the River Hamble. The club has not only honoured this pledge for nearly a century, but over the last 50 years has extended to include yacht racing. From our early days in a wooden storage hut in the kitchen garden of the “Bugle Inn”, the present clubhouse now resides at the southern end of the Parish Dinghy Park. The overall aim of the Centenary year is to raise funds, so we can improve and expand upon the existing clubhouse facilities and enhance our fleet, as well as raise awareness to extend our membership. Since Basil Lubbock MC stepped down as the first Commodore, we have had 27 successors and on water the club was always at the forefront, supporting new classes and ideas. With a growing list of sailing achievements, HRSC is one of the premier sailing clubs in the country. Most notable was the year when six of the 13-man Great Britain Olympic sailing team were HRSC members and they brought back a Gold and Silver medal in 1972. We have since developed the Hamble Winter Series, now the premier Autumnal series in the UK calendar. Hambledon Vineyard (photographed on front cover) is preparing itself for its best grape harvest to date, but this success story has not happened over night. As the oldest commercial vineyard in England, Hambledon is steeped in historical importance, with Hambledon village also being known as the cradle of cricket. Major General Sir Guy Salisbury-Jones first established the vineyard back in 1952 with the help of the Pol Roger family, and at this time produced dry, still wines until the vineyard changed ownership in the 1970s. Sadly, the vineyard fell into disrepair until 1999, when Ian Kellett purchased the house and the vineyard. Following essential soil and climate analysis, Ian decided to replant with the three grape varieties most commonly found in the Champagne region – Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, to return Hambledon Vineyard to its former glory. Today, Hambledon makes approximately 100,000 bottles of NV English Sparkling wine a year in the traditional method from 25 hectares on pure chalk and is working towards a 1 million bottle production, purely from estate grown fruit, within the next 20 years.

Support Local Producers This Christmas

Whether you are sticking within the Hampshire borders or hopping across the water to the Isle of Wight, local producers have a huge variety of food and drink offerings all year round. If you are stuck for gift ideas, how about creating your own hamper from local produce? This doesn’t have to mean spending hours driving around to farm shops – simply head to your local Southern Co-op retail store with a Local Flavours range. Jams, chutneys, juices, chocolate and top tipples are all made right here in Hampshire. Isle of Wight producers are also worth sampling with popular ranges from The Garlic Farm, such as their Vampires Revenge, and the IOW Cheese Company’s blue cheese. Gemma Lacey, Southern Co-op’s Director Sustainability and Communications, said: “More than a decade ago we made a commitment to support local producers through our Local Flavours range and we are spoilt for choice. “Being based in Hampshire, we have a huge range of delicious food and drink made right here on our doorstep. Knowing where our food comes from is so important and so is supporting our local economy. Our local producers can also bring the food alive to help us understand exactly what goes in to the food on our plates.” For a family friendly hamper, Swanmore-based The Meon Spirit Company offers a range of juices made from farm picked apples including their apple and elderflower juice. Hand-baked in Bosham, Lorama Foods creates yummy sponge cakes, and Chichester’s Montezumas produces luxury chocolates from 100% black to their sea dog chocolate flavoured with sea salt.

Want something sweeter? Try the strawberry jam handmade from seasonal fruit by The Real Jam & Chutney Company in the New Forest. If you want to include a special brew in your hamper then look no further than Bishop’s Waltham’s Upham Brewery with beers made from water from their very own bore hole on the brewery site. If you are more of a baker, then check out Claytons Eggs. Freshly laid in West Wellow, their stronger taste will add flavour to any baking creation – not to mention give your sponges a yellow glow to make fellow bakers green with envy. Local Flavours ranges are stocked in the majority of Southern Coop retail stores including stores located in High Street in Bishop’s Waltham, Hambledon Road in Denmead, The Square in Wickham and The Square in Titchfield. Former Fareham College student wows at first solo art exhibition Photographed below: Fareham College Principal, Nigel Duncan with former student Joshua Langley A talented ex-student from Fareham College, the UK’s college of the year, has successfully launched his first solo art exhibition at Winchester’s Fulflood Gallery. Joshua Langley, who found a passion for art as a toddler, drafting complex sketches of people and places, studied art and design at Fareham College where he achieved great results. Now a promising artist with his own website www.joshualangleyart.com, Joshua was looking for a place to showcase his work and chose Fulflood Gallery because of its track record in launching successful solo shows from budding artists. Joshua showcased his ‘plein air’ paintings of Winchester at an exhibition on the 8th and 9th September at the gallery. The collection of 21 original oil paintings capture the beauty of the historic medieval city and Joshua’s talent for painting

landscapes. Nigel Duncan, Principal of Fareham College was one of the attendees at the exhibition and said: “Josh is a very talented artist, painting portraits, landscapes and special commissions. I am delighted that Fareham College has played a part in helping him to follow his dream and launch his first solo art exhibition. Our art department provides an exceptional learning environment for students and Joshua’s achievements are testament to that. The exhibition was a great success. I am sure it will be the first of many.” Speaking about finally seeing his collection on display, Joshua added: “I’m delighted to have accomplished my goal and have my first solo exhibition, and excited about the prospects of being a gallery artist. Winchester offers some amazing landscapes opportunities that can only be fully experienced and captured by setting up and painting on the spot. Personally, this represents a massive step as a landscape painter.” Joshua hopes to collaborate with the gallery again and continue to exhibit his art. His ultimate desire is to exhibit nationally and move towards showcasing his work in the capital. To find out more about Joshua’s work, visit: www.joshualangleyart.com

Local man represents GB in Long Distance Duathlon World Championships in Switzerland

2.

Andy McGhee, aged 40, father of 1. four from Hedge End, took part in Duathlon World Championships at the weekend coming 14th in his age group, running 30km and cycling 48km in eight hours four minutes. The championships known as ‘Powerman Zofingen’, in Switzerland, is the biggest duathlon event and has been running for 30 years. Andy was selected for Team GB on his past running and cycling performance in competitions in the UK. His day job is managing director of Pinnacle Performance Gym in Hamble. A gym he founded back in 2011. He also completed seven marathons in seven days barefoot to raise funds for Southampton General Hospital children’s ward back in September 2015. His endurance and commitment to health and fitness is incredible. Andy commented; “I was in the British Army earlier in my career and still have that sense of pride for my country. To be selected to take part in this event as part of Team GB was amazing. The race was a huge experience. The race didn’t go to plan, but I finished in a respectable time considering my lack of experience at this distance. “It was an honour to wear the GB suit in my first season as a duathlete and I can’t wait until next year’s Euro Championships! “For me family and fitness are key to my happiness and overall wellbeing. It requires commitment, dedication and determination. I love what I do and hope to perform well at this event and be proud of my achievements.” 1 . Andy in action on the 48km cycle 2. Newton’s Space Saplings; can you give them space to grow? Festival, the only event in the UK combining the discoveries of Newton with interpretations of his legacy. Organisations can bid for one of the 8 remarkable saplings, explaining how they will give them space to grow, engage new audiences and promote curiosity. Science Minister Sam Gyimah said: From gravity to Granny Smiths, Sir Isaac Newton has captured our imagination for more than 300 years. Inspiring the next generation of scientists is at the core of our modern Industrial Strategy and now partners across the country have the chance to do just that by getting their green fingers on these special space saplings. The pips were taken from the iconic Flower of Kent tree at Woolsthorpe

Seeds from Isaac Newton’s apple tree, which were blasted into space with Tim Peake, are now young trees and in need of a new home. The apple pips were taken to the International Space Station on the British ESA astronaut’s Principia mission, where they spent six months floating in micro gravity as part of the ‘Pips in Space’ project. Now the UK Space Agency, the National Trust and Kew, who worked together on the project, have teamed up with South Kesteven District Council (SKDC) in Lincolnshire to launch a competition to find partners that share a commitment to inspire future Newtons to host the trees. The bidding was launched on the 12th September at Newton’s birthplace, Woolsthorpe Manor, during the media launch of this month’s SKDC-backed Gravity Fields

SPACE TIMES Manor, Isaac Newton’s family home near Grantham, Lincolnshire, which is cared for by the National Trust.

Newtons, attract the most visitors and offer a legacy route for maximum impact.

The tree, which still bears fruit every year was said to have prompted Newton to question why the apple fell, leading to his world-changing work around gravity. His landmark work, called Principia Mathematica, was chosen as the name of Tim Peake’s mission to acknowledge the debt of all space travellers to Newton’s work. Jeremy Curtis, Head of Education and Skills at the UK Space Agency, said: We are thrilled that our friends at Kew have managed to nurture these precious young trees to the point where they can begin independent lives. Now we need to find good homes for them across the UK to help as many people as possible find out about the intertwined stories of Newton, gravity, physics, space travel and horticulture. Maybe one of the trees will one day inspire the next Newton!

Apply for a Space sapling: CLOSING DATE: Midnight 1 January 2019 https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/woolsthorpemanor/features/newtons-space-saplings-needhomes

Jannette Warrener, Partnerships Manager, Woolsthorpe Manor, said: As partners of the UK Space Agency and The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, the National Trust is looking forward to seeing how the space saplings might inspire the next generation of future Newton’s. Newton’s passion for scientific endeavour and study never waned. At Woolsthorpe Manor we want to keep that passion for scientific discovery alive and we would like these saplings, as they mature and grow, to light a fire of discovery in the next generation of scientists. On their return from space in 2016, the well-travelled pips went to Wakehurst Place, part of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, where they spent 90 days sitting on a bed of agar jelly at 5 C to simulate the winter cold needed to trigger germination. Spring arrived for them in May 2017 when they were warmed to 15 C and the young seedlings started to emerge. They have now been nurtured into ‘space saplings’. Dr Anne Visscher, Career Development Fellow, Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, said: We are delighted to be part of such an important project. The seeds taken from the apple tree that inspired Newton have been on an amazing journey. Since their return they have been grown and monitored at Kew’s Wakehurst site in Sussex where we will continue to care for them until they find new homes around the country to tell the story of Newton, space travel and seed science. The UK Space Agency, National Trust, and Kew will be undertaking a rigorous selection process from bidders, and are looking for national partners who share their commitment to inspire future

The winners will be announced in early 2019 with a handover of trees at Woolsthorpe Manor.

Elon Musk and SpaceX announce 1st tourist for ‘moon loop’ Elon Musk has been in the news a lot recently, from his SpaceX headquarters in California he announced that it will send Japanese billionaire and online fashion tycoon Yusaku Maezawa with a group of artists on a loop around the moon and back to Earth in 2023. On Monday (September 17, 2018), SpaceX unveiled its plans to send the first private passenger around the moon in a Moon LOOP. The passenger will be Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa age 42 and if all goes according to plan, it will be the first journey to the moon by humans since 1972.

Maezawa (@yousuck2020 on Twitter) is the founder of Zozotown, Japan’s largest online fashion mall. His net worth is $2.9 billion. He is also an art enthusiast and said he planned to invite six to eight artists from around the world to accompany him on his trip to the moon, drawing them from a global pool of painters, photographers, musicians, film directors, fashion designers, and architects. He said they’d be asked to “create something” on the return to Earth, adding for reporters: These masterpieces will inspire the dreamer within all of us.

The moon missions of the 1960s and early ’70s required giant rockets called Saturn Vs which are as tall as a 36-story building, (about 111 meters tall). To date, the Saturn Vs are the only launch vehicles that have carried humans beyond low Earth orbit. SpaceX said its moon flight will launch via an as-yet-unbuilt rocket, named the Big Falcon Rocket (BFR). The BFR is expected to stand 118 meters high, taller than a Saturn V. SpaceX has said it hopes this rocket will someday carry people to Mars. No BFR has yet been built, and Musk cautioned: “It’s not 100 percent certain we can bring this to flight.” As of today, only 24 humans all being Americans have travelled from Earth to the moon and only 12 have ever set foot on the moon. Maezawa and his artistic team will not land on the moon themselves but they will travel on a free return trajectory, carrying the BFR to

Auto Brite Smart Repairs Express Bodyshop Have you ever returned to your car, only to find it has been damaged? Maybe a door ding from a careless opening of a door, or a misjudged parking manoeuvre causing paint damage to your bumper? Or perhaps you have scuffed a low wall, scraped a gate post or had the misfortune to suffer mindless vandal damage to your paintwork? All of these minor types of car body issues are the type Auto Brite has specialised in for 24 years. We know how inconvenient it can be to have your car away in a bodyshop for days whilst it is being repaired. We also know how you may not fancy having it repaired on your driveway, or perhaps you don’t have one. At our Express Bodyshop, we only carry out minor repairs, not full resprays or major accident damage. We will repair, rather than replace, anything from a scuffed mirror casing or a split bumper, up to a scraped full side of a car, meaning we can offer a faster turnaround for these minor, yet very important repairs. Whether you have a car which you would like to look great again, or you have a car due to be returned at the end of its lease with some damage needing sorting, we have a reputation for offering a quality, convenient and value service, every time. We are a husband and wife team, who treat every customer as we would wish ourselves to be treated, with care and honesty. Hopefully you are fortunate enough to not require our services, but just maybe it would be worthwhile keeping our advert just in case!

Can You Help Cats Protection? The Fareham & Waterlooville branch of Cats Protection are in urgent need of Fundraising Volunteers. The role includes some administration, organising “pitches”, occasionally manning the “Stalls”. You would receive total support from our Fundraising Co-ordinator and would be providing an essential role to help care for all the cats and kittens that come into our care. Give An Assistance Dog The Best Start In Life VOLUNTEERS are needed to offer the best start in life to a puppy training to be an assistance dog for charity Canine Partners. The Midhurst based charity is looking for puppy parents to provide their puppies with the love, care and skills they need to get ready for the next stage of their training. Lynne Candler, a 55-year-old mum of two and grandmother of one from Waterlooville, Hampshire, is a puppy parent in Canine Partner’s Fareham puppy satellite with her third puppy, Smithy. “I saw Canine Partners on TV and at the time I wasn’t working and wanted to do something rewarding, challenging, thoroughly enjoyable and social,” says Lynne. “You feel so excited once you’ve made the decision to become a puppy parent as you patiently wait for that call to say they’ve got a puppy for you.” Canine Partners trains amazing assistance dogs to transform the lives of people with disabilities, boosting their confidence and independence. The dogs are taught a range of everyday tasks including picking up and fetching items, opening doors and dressing a person. They can even help to load and unload a washing machine and they can fetch help in an emergency. Puppies-in-training live in the volunteer’s home from around eightweeks-old until they are ready to start advanced training when they are between 12 and 14 months, at the Southern Training Centre near Midhurst or the Midlands Training Centre in Leicestershire. “Smithy is just like any other dog but with more things he needs to learn,” says Lynne. “Training during the day usually involves going into shops, practicing recalls, playing, socialisation, and often some coffee and cake for me.” Canine Partners’ expert trainers are on hand to support puppy parents, as training involves home visits, one-to-ones, town visits and puppy classes in order to socialise the puppy and get them used to all situations they may need to be in as a fully trained canine partner. “We go on trips to the bank, local shops and even to the hairdressers,” says Lynne. “He uses stairs and lifts and he walks under subways and over bridges, we will also take a trip on the bus to visit the local town.” To become a puppy parent in one of Canine Partners’ 13 puppy satellites across the country you need to be aged 18 or over, not work full time and be willing to make a long term commitment. “They steal your heart and as time draws nearer you dread the call to say they have a date for your puppy to go into advanced training,” says Lynne. “When they go the house is quiet and the toys are packed away, you swear you won’t do it again because it’s too hard to give them back but then when you get the news they’ve been partnered you burst with pride.” To find out more about becoming a puppy parent for Canine Partners, please visit caninepartners.org.uk/ get-involved/volunteering/puppy-parents/, call 08456 580 480 or email info@caninepartners.org.uk

The theatre’s building itself started life as The Market Hotel in 1850. In 1914 it became a cine-variety venue, converting to a fulltime cinema in 1924. This cinema lasted for the next 50 years until 1974 when the cinema was closed. Threatened with demolition an action group was formed comprising of six Winchester thespians that were anxious to save the building for use as permanent theatre which Winchester lacked at that time. A charitable trust was formed and subsequently purchased the building in 1977. Theatre Royal Winchester was then opened the following year on 1 November 1978 by the esteemed actor/playwright Robert Morley. Deryck Newland, Chief Executive comments “It is important that this milestone in the theatre’s history is marked accordingly. It will be a great opportunity for those volunteers and staff who were instrumental in the early years to gather in the theatre to reminisce and celebrate their achievements whilst enjoying some entertainment. The evening will also look to the future and our plans for the building and wider organisation ensuring that the theatre is still here in another 40 years.” Phil Yates, a founder member of the ‘gang of six’ that saved the building comments, “I hope to meet up again with some of the staff and volunteers from the early years. It will be an evening full of nostalgia I am sure.” If you were a volunteer or staff member at Theatre Royal Winchester from 1977 to 1985 please contact Kirstie Mathieson on 01962 844 600 or via email Kirstie.mathieson@theatreroyalwinchester.co.uk

70s!

FASHION

THOMAS MARRINGTON TALKS THROUGH THE SECOND (THIRD? FOURTH? Fifth?!) COMING OF THE 70s, and how to get the look for less

A lot of fun can be had in choosing to dress in relatively bad taste. Case in point - the revived again, back from the grave, simply REFUSING to die trend that is all things 70s. Unlike the last time we saw the 70s make a return to the runway a little over five years ago, this time there’s less of a focus on psycadelic prints and flared denim and much more emphasis on quintessentially 70s textures. Corduroy is the big ticket item here. Having had a bit of a renaissance in trucker jackets and trousers over the last few years, H&M, Faux Fur Coat, £79.99

now it firmly sits in the “one material fits all” category. Fancy a double-breasted two-piece suit in a rusty corduroy? Zara leads the pack. Or perhaps you just feel like a pair of classic overalls, cropped into a skirt? Once again, corduroy to the rescue, courtesy of literally any high street store. Rusty, earthy browns, oranges and tans are your best bet for nailing not only a thoroughly retro vibe, but making sure to still fit in within the Autumnal crowds.

ZARA, DOUBLEBREASTED COAT, £119

“There’s a beauty in the cast-aside choices of fashion gone by” Faux fur isn’t sequestered to any particular decade of fashion, but there’s a particular brand of nylon-esque faux fur, evidently and proudly not the real deal, that sits very comfortably in the era of flares and tiedye. In order to up the garish factor, it’s obviously an essential requirement that at least one type of animal print be incorporated. Leopard is not only a classic, but pratically a neutral - anyone who dares contest this, go ahead and try pairing this coat from H&M with any outfit you own. Naysayers, you’ll be pleasantly surprised at the outcome. The takeaway message from this season is to embrace that which you may have turned your nose up at in the past. There’s a beauty in the cast-aside choices of fashion gone by, none more so relevant when updated in 2018-fitting slim-line cuts, with affordable price tags to match.

Australia, beyond Sydney. Australia is so vast, unless you have unlimited time it is almost impossible to see everything in one visit. Therefore it is important to prioritise what you are looking for from your holiday, whilst Sydney and The Great Barrier Reef are high on most people’s list of must visit destinations, yet Australia has so much more to offer and if good food and wine are high up that list then South Australia should be on it. Adelaide is approximately 2 hours flying time from Sydney or an amazing 4-day drive along the Great Ocean Road from Melbourne. This is a city that never seems to fail in surprising our clients with its elegance and culture, easy to get around with minimal traffic and a centre that is only a mile square. Adelaide is known for its festivals, alfresco dining and Mediterranean climate, a charming city that is full of life. With its rugged coastline to the south and the Barossa Valley to the north it is surrounded by beautiful scenery and it is the Barossa Valley that attracts so many people to discover the secrets of South Australia. Australia’s leading wine region with such famous names as Penfolds, Jacobs Creek and Wolfblass are all based in the Barossa, there is ample opportunity to take in wine tasting as well as wine making displays and informal dinning. In fact food is central to this winemaking region and any diets should definitely be put on hold until your return home. With its diverse European culture, it has taken the best of each and brought them together, so from French cheese to German bread and meat or Mediterranean olives and fresh fruit, you will find it all here, put together in Australia’s own unique style.

Perth, the gateway to Australia

Perth and South West Australia is another area that is easily overlooked but has so much to offer and also boasts the shortest travelling time from the UK with Qantas now running a direct flight from Heathrow to Perth, reducing the travelling time down to 18 hours. Perth is a great place to start your holiday at with Kings Park and the Swan River 2 of its major attractions. Kings Park is actually larger than New York’s Central Park and has many great walks to enjoy along with its Botanical Gardens, whilst The Swan River offers a great way to see the city skyline and learn a little bit of its history at the same time, and what’s better than a twilight cruise watching the sun go down. A short drive or ferry ride from Perth you will find the city of Fremantle, from here you can take a ferry to Rottnest Island to meet the famous Quokkas or just enjoy Fremantle’s Café Culture, visit the local brewery, Little Creatures and take a tour of Fremantle Prison which has a wealth of fascinating history.

Add the remaining butter and stir in the flour as soon as the butter has melted. Cook for 30 seconds, stirring constantly. 3. Slowly pour the milk into the pan, just a little at a time, stirring well between each adding. Gradually add 250ml/10fl oz of the reserved stock and the wine, if using, stirring until the sauce is smooth and thickened slightly. Bring to a gentle simmer and cook for 3 minutes. 4. Season the mixture, to taste, with salt and pepper. Remove from the heat and stir in the cream. Pour into a large bowl and cover the surface of the sauce with cling film to prevent a skin forming. Set aside to cool. 5. Preheat the oven to 200C/180C Fan/Gas 6. Put a baking tray in the oven to heat. 6. For the pastry, dust the side with flour and roll the sheet of puff pastry out turning the pastry frequently until around 5mm/¼in thick and 4cm/1½in larger than the pie dish. Lift the

pastry over the rolling pin and place it gently into the pie dish. Press the pastry firmly up the sides, making sure there are no air bubbles. Leave the excess pastry overhanging the sides. Cut the chicken breasts into 3cm/1¼in pieces. Stir the chicken, ham and leeks into the cooled sauce. Pour the chicken filling into the pie dish. Brush the rim of the dish with beaten egg. Roll out the reserved pastry for the lid. Cover the pie with the pastry lid and press the edges together firmly to seal. Trim any excess pastry. Make a small hole in the centre of the pie with the tip of a knife. Glaze the top of the pie with beaten egg. Bake on the preheated tray in the centre of the oven for 35–40 minutes, or until the pie is golden-brown all over and the filling is piping hot.

FISH PIE Serves 2

Ingredients: • 454g potatoes, peeled, boiled and mashed • Pinch saffron, infused in a teacup of hot milk • 3 tbsp butter • Handful of peas • 280ml milk • 225g white fish • 110g smoked white fish • 2 tsp plain flour • 2 tbsp chopped chives Method: 1. Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/gas mark 4. Beat the potato with the saffron milk and 1 tbsp of butter. Taste and season with salt and pepper. 2. Pour the milk into a wide pan, and place the fish fillets, skin side up on top. Bring slowly to the boil, cover the pan and turn off the heat. Leave to stand for five minutes, or until any skin can be peeled off and the fish flakes easily. 3. In another pan, melt 1 tbsp of butter and stir in the flour. Cook for a minute, then stir in the milk from the fish pan. Cook, stirring, until thick and smooth (put it through a sieve if necessary). Stir half the sauce and all the chives gently into the fish, letting it fall in large flakes: add more sauce if necessary. 4. Scrape the mixture into an ovenproof dish. Top with the potato, and dab the last of the butter on top. Bake for about half an hour, until browned. (I piped the mash on but by all means just scrape it over).

and commercial customers not to idle their engines when waiting to board or disembark from the ferries. The campaign is designed to raise awareness of the issues and improve the air-quality for customers and staff working at the terminals and on-board as well as those living and working in Southampton and East Cowes. See redfunnel.co.uk/anti-idling

Red Falcon to become testbed for latest environmental initiatives. ‘Red Goes Green’ is the name given to Red Funnel’s new long-term environmental strategy announced in September. It seeks to showcase the environmental successes of recent years and highlight a wide range of new green initiatives, including measures to change consumer behaviour in line with the company’s commitment to operate in an environmentally sustainable and sympathetic manner. With a focus on improving air quality, increasing recycling rates, reducing waste & packaging and encouraging sustainable travel, many of the ideas will require testing and MV Red Falcon will be used for this purpose. To raise public awareness, the ship has been rebranded with a green funnel and logo and the main passenger thoroughfare on B Deck will shortly display information about the measures being taken and how the public can get involved. Fran Collins, Red Funnel’s CEO commented: “Environmental protection and sustainability has been part of our brand ethos for many years. In the mid-90’s, we voluntarily switched to using lesspolluting low-Sulphur fuel which recently became mandatory in UK waters and in 2011 we were also one of first ferry companies to achieve ISO 14001 accreditation in recognition of our processes and systems to protect the environment.” “Our new ‘Red goes Green’ strategy incorporates discounts for electric vehicles, the trial use of eco-friendly Biofuel and a pledge to reduce waste, improve recycling and encourage changes in consumer behaviour. In summary, it marks the next step in a journey with our customers, suppliers and partners to safeguard the natural environment and reduce our ecological footprint.”

Headline initiatives in more detail: Discounts for electric vehicles Red Funnel will be one of the first ferry companies in the world to offer a discount for pure electric vehicles. Initially in place for bookings between now and the end of this year, for travel up to 31 March 2019, the owners of pure electric cars/small vans can enjoy a 25% discount when pre-booking online at redfunnel.co.uk/ electric Biofuel From early October, the main engines and generators on Red Falcon will operate exclusively on Green-D Bio-Fuel. Red Funnel expects to see a significant reduction in the amount of Sulphur Dioxide, Nitrogen Dioxide, Carbon Dioxide and soot particles in the exhaust gases which is good news for the environment. The longterm trial, one of the first in the marine sector, will help determine the impact, if any, on maintenance regimes, reliability and fuel consumption. See redfunnel.co.uk/biofuel Anti-idling campaign In partnership with Southampton’s Clean Air Network, environmental charity ‘tec’ and a local school, Red Funnel is upweighting its anti-idling campaign to politely encourage more private

Single use plastics and coffee cups Red Funnel is striving to reduce and ultimately eliminate the use of single-use plastics in unison with the IW Council’s plastic-free Island campaign. Plastic straws, cutlery and plates have already been replaced with ecofriendly alternatives and a reusable hot drinks mug made from recycled material will be retailed shortly. A discount on hot beverages is also available to customers who bring their own travel mug. See redfunnel.co.uk/plastic Isle of Wight Beach Clean As part of this year’s Isle of Wight Day, Red Funnel is donating £15,000 to support the clean-up of the Island’s entire coastline over the weekend of 22-23rd September and has published some attractive ferry offers to encourage beach-clean volunteers from the mainland to help with this mammoth task. Red Funnel staff will also be removing plastic and other litter from the beach at Ventnor and Steephill Cove on Saturday 22nd September. See redfunnel.co.uk/ beachclean for more information. WHAT’S ON THE BISHOPS WALTHAM GARDENING CLUB With Autumn well on its way, there is so much to do in the garden. One major job is tidying up the overgrown plants, but don’t be too strict, as many creatures rely on some cover to protect them over the Winter months, and leave some seed heads -especially Hydrangeas- which will protect next year’s buds. Don’t destroy Hedgehogs, Frogs, Toads, Newts and the myriad of creatures that have sought shelter under that lovely pile of sticks that you have placed for them – the bonfire for 5th November! ALWAYS move to a new location if you can and, even if you can’t, ALWAYS check underneath before lighting, you may be surprised. This month sees the Club’s Annual Social Evening but next month we will hear what’s happening in the gardens half a world away – in Australia. We usually meet on the 4th Wednesday of the month, except December. The meetings are held at 1.45 pm in St Columba’s Church Hall, Hillson Drive, just off Highlands Road.
