Fareham College Students Achieve an exceptional 98.8% pass rate in Level 3 Qualifications

Fareham College Level 3 students and staff are today celebrating an outstanding overall advanced level pass rate of 98.8%. Over half of the students achieved high grades and nearly a third achieving the highest grade possible. Fareham College’s Principal and Chief Executive, Andrew Kaye, said: “A huge congratulations to everyone. We are incredibly proud of our students for achieving these outstanding results which are a true testament to their hard work and commitment.

“Our strive for excellence through continual improvement is at the core of everything we do and these results truly reflect the benefits our students gain learning from our industry-experienced teachers in great facilities and using the most up-to-date equipment. “Level 3 qualifications have the great advantage of opening the door to different career paths. They offer the same route into university as A Levels and a number of our students are taking this route in September.

A huge thank you to Fareham College for the motivation, support, teaching and incredible facilities. I don’t think I could have done it without you. Knowing I have the results I need to go to university is great. I am really proud of my achievement and am feeling very confident now looking forward to my future.” Jackie Parnell, Level 3 Beauty Student added: “I actually studied A Levels for two years previously but then decided I wanted a change of direction. So, I moved to Fareham College because I believed it could take me through the qualifications I needed to achieve my dream of starting my own beauty business. “Today marks the start of the rest of my life. I’m over the moon with my results and all my hard work and commitment means I can now forge ahead. I am very excited about my future”. Andrew Kaye added “Excitingly, moving into the next academic year, we are taking applications from students for the all-new T Level qualifications.

“Other students want to take advantage of Fareham College’s close business links by going straight into the work place. Students who have taken this option have secured full time employment or apprenticeships in organisations such as McLaren, Carnival, NATS, Hampshire County Council and South West Railways.

These courses starting in September 2020 provide a technical alternative to A Levels, with the added benefit of extended industry placements.The first courses are in education and childcare and digital production, design and development. Again, we are leading the way in offering a choice of qualification to put every student onto the career path of their choice”.

Level 3 Student Lewis Robertson studied IT Practitioners, and achieved D*D*D has chosen the university route. He said: “I’m absolutely thrilled to have achieved such excellent grades for my Level 3 qualification.

SWEATER WEATHER Transitional dressing is an art form in itself, and as Thomas Marrington explains, The humble turtleneck is a surprisingly versatile piece that will help get you through it WITH EASE

If you know me at all, you know that I love the colder months. Heavy coats, boots, scarfs and gloves - that’s my comfort zone. Nothing makes me happier than realising that, for the first time in months, I need a jacket before stepping out the door in the morning. OVERSIZE TURTLENECK JUMPER, H&M, £24.99

Whilst I realise that many will think this unusual, it’s always been the case for me. A big part of my love for the chilly weather is the clothes that accompany it. As someone not particularly fond of his body shape, it thrills me beyond belief to cover it up as stylishly as possible. With this in mind, I’m a huge fan of a turtleneck. During my time buying clothes on this Earth, I’ve gone through a fair number of them. For the record, I have a few favourite stores to buy them from. Cos is fantastic, but can be pricey and is also difficult to access outside of the major cities unless you shop online. I’m also a big fan of Uniqlo’s offerings, and “A big part of my love for THE chilly weather IS the clothes that accompany it”

whilst their prices are great, ditto on the difficult to access front. Beyond those, there are the easier to get ahold of - Zara, H&M and Topshop being three of the best. Whilst the knitwear at H&M can be a little dicey, it’s so well priced that you won’t particularly mind a bit of bobbling. It gives it a lived-in look, anyhow. Zara and Topshop are slightly better for this, and Zara’s styling is always a little elevated. Case in point, this layering hero item pictured here.

Sleeveless turtlenecks sound like an oxymoron, but what they actually are is a layering godsend. Pop on over a long-sleeve black T-shirt and you have yourself a cosy get-up to get to work in. Once you’re at the office and that hideous indoor heating is trying to cook you alive, simply pop to the loo and slip off the T-shirt - the wide sleeve holes on the jumper provide ample ventilation whilst still keeping you from being chilly.

Deleting digital - how to remove your digital footprint Nine years on from my own father’s funeral and I have now given up trying to close his Amazon Account…and his email account…and his Itunes and so on. It is becoming increasingly important to consider your position in the digital world and the size of your ‘digital footprint’ in a highly progressive online world. Your digital footprint represents all the information about you that exists on the internet as a result of your online activity. This could be from what you post on social media pages, your emails to colleagues and friends or even just what you have previously searched on google. Many of you will have accounts set up across the web, some of which you use frequently and some you probably don’t remember creating. From ordering something on Amazon to setting up a newspaper prescription through a website, it’s easy to lose track of where you started and what terms and conditions you’ve agreed to. So, what can you do about your digital footprint after you’ve gone? While some people may not mind that information about them online can always be accessed, others are more concerned about their ‘online personality’ outliving them.

Here’s what you can do...

● Appoint someone as your online executor. ○ Pick someone you trust as you will be figuratively giving them a key to your online world. This will allow your chosen someone to either memorialise your accounts (popular for social media pages) or to close accounts down completely in order to protect your online presence from issues like identity theft. ● Make sure you understand the privacy settings of the websites you have signed up for and are aware of all your passwords. ○ Unless you leave your ‘online executor’ all your passwords, you should be aware that it can be very difficult to shut down your accounts. Google and Facebook in particular have a very lengthy process, which is not always successful, to allow someone to gain access to someone’s account without the passwords. ● Have a formal document statement prepared regarding how you want your online accounts to be handled. ○ Do you want them shut down? Do you want them to remain as a memorial where people can share memories and anecdotes? Do you want emails to be sent to inform people of your passing? This will all have to be in writing.

700th Callout for Hampshire Search and Rescue

Hampshire Search and Rescue (HANTSAR) recently responded to a call from the police to look for a missing child, who was thankfully found safe and well whilst the search teams were en route. This was the 700th Callout for our all-volunteer charity, to search for vulnerable missing people on behalf of the police, since our formation in 2003. This is not a cause for celebration, but it is a milestone in our history. We mark it by remembering how many people we have set out to help and how much time and effort our volunteers have contributed through their commitment to the local communities over the years.

Solent Local Enterprise Partnership to launch Maritime UK Solent The Solent Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) has announced it will be launching a new UK body, one of the first of its kind to be established in the UK, to bring together the Solent’s marine and maritime strengths and assets and champion the region as a globally significant maritime hub. Steered by the LEP, Maritime UK Solent will help its members to develop international links to grow their businesses and provide them a direct route to Government with the help of Maritime UK. The hub will convene, advocate and provide leadership for the sector in the Solent region. It will also encourage collaboration and best practice sharing to improve knowledge, reach and understanding of the sector within the region. In addition to this, the body will hold regular themed networking events, offer advice on marine and maritime matters in the Solent region and monitor and analyse relevant economic figures and data to foresee potential future challenges and opportunities. The new body was announced by Kevin George, a Solent LEP Business Director and Chair of the Board for Red Funnel, the Isle of Wight ferry operator, at a recent event held by the Department for Transport (DfT) at the 1851 Trust in Portsmouth, to launch its 2018/19 Maritime Annual Report. Further activity will follow in September during London International Shipping Week when the LEP will fully launch Maritime UK Solent. Kevin George said: “From the

Local teenager Edward Ralls (17) was selected by Fareham College, and sponsored by the Rotary Club of Fareham, to take part in the Rotary Youth Leadership Course (RYLA). The RYLA course, held at the Tile Barn Activity Centre in the New Forest, ended on Sunday 21st July and Edward came home brimming with enthusiasm and equipped with new life skills which will aid his future career prospects. President of the Rotary Club of Fareham, Bp Michael Cleaves, said: “We sponsor one or two young people in the Fareham area each year to go on a RYLA course to improvetheir self-confidence, leadership, teamwork and communication skills. Fareham College assist by selecting, from all their students, the candidates who they think will benefit the most. I’m delighted Edward has enjoyed and benefited from our sponsorship and we look forward to hearing of his experiences shortly.” Developing leadership and teamwork skills feature highly on the course with practical and theoretical problem solving. These aim to enhance the existing skills of candidates and Edward enjoyed the challenges posed. As Edward said “I had to quickly learn how to work with people I had only just met in teamwork situations, such as low ropes, where you had to appraise each other’s abilities to support each other in the best way. I definitely learnt new skills but was also given the opportunity to recognise leadership skills I already had!”

Copacabana Ball drives charity Roxby Garage forward

funds for the Rose Road Association last month. Drummers, dancers, magicians and other performers wowed the crowd at the event hosted by BBC’s Tony Husband. The headline act, indie band, Super Hands played into the night. Kicking off the dancing with Barry Manilow’s classic Copacabana. The aim of the evening was to raise funds for the Rose Road Association, which provides care and support for profoundly disabled children and young adults. Over £10,000 was raised at the event, enabling the charity to purchase a much-needed accessible vehicle. Autumn is the Best Time to Plant Trees

Just as daffodils herald the arrival of spring, so the gradual change of colours on the leaves of our trees tell us autumn is gently on her way. Yet, despite the descent of mists at sunrise and a slight chill in the morning air, the gardening season is far from over.

Warm Earth

Did you know autumn is the most perfect time to plant a tree? The earth is still warm from the summer sun and moist from the autumnal damp atmosphere. Planting now gives the roots of a young tree time to settle and become established before the spring stimulates new top growth.

Vibrant Colours

There is quite a selection of ornamental trees available that provide vibrant colour during the autumn. This includes the Japanese Acer and the native British tree, the hawthorn. An ornamental tree is usually very showy and tends to be specifically designed for the domestic garden so they are cultivated not to become too large.

You probably do not associate pretty pink blossom with winter months, yet this is exactly what you will get with the Prunus ‘Autumnalis Rosea’, a winter flowering cherry. It begins to

flower from later October right upuntil March when the the flowers are quickly followed by a small fruit, which is highly popular with the birds. It serves as an ideal specimen tree in the middle of the lawn while its deciduous leaves also provide fine autumnal colour. Still on the trail of cherry trees, there is the Prunes avium ‘Stella’, which, sadly does not blossom during the winter months. However, it is not only the first stone fruit tree to blossom in the spring, it also provides a fantastic crop of large sweet and juicy red cherries in late June.

What about fruit trees? We would especially like to draw your attention to the Pippin, which produces, arguably, the most famous flavoursome apple in the world. Most apple trees are pretty in shape and the Pippin is no exception. Winter blossom? Or the promise of cherries and apples? Or perhaps a Salix Purpurea Pendula - a handsome American weeping willow? Finally, when you are planting your tree dig in some daffodil bulbs around the base to help remind you that spring will not be far away!

Bat conservation gets a boost in Bishops Waltham and Titchfield

Protected species of bats have been given new homes and their old ones preserved on the roofs of two co-operative convenience stores. Bat boxes have been secured to The Co-operative Food stores in Titchfield and Bishops Waltham to help protect the local bat population. There is also a new bat tile on the roof of the Titchfield store to help bats to get in and out of the loft area. The conservation work was carried out by Southern Co-op - the regional, independent co-operative after a series of surveys were commissioned last year. Emma McVie, Southern Co-op's Project Manager, said: "We are always mindful of the environment when we are looking at refurbishment or building works but it is so satisfying to know we have made a difference. "When we were looking at replacing the roof in Titchfield the age of the building meant there was a high likelihood of bats being present and this was confirmed during one of the surveys when a single common pipistrelle was recorded emerging from beneath a lifted roof tile to the rear of the building. "We made sure we protected them and their access to the loft when we finally replaced the roof in March. We also placed an extra bat box on the side of the building to give other bats a new home should they need one." The bat tile included in the roof is a modified tile which has a hole just big enough for a long-eared bat to access. The bat surveys in Titchfield also recorded three species of bat foraging and commuting within the local area - a common pipistrelle, a noctule and a long-eared bat (either the brown long-eared bat or the grey long-eared bat). These are European Protected Species. A further three bat surveys were carried out in Bishops Waltham with a detailed external and internal inspection of accessible structures to compile information on bat entry/exit points and bat roosting locations.In Bishops Waltham, there were two species of bat found in the area but no roosting bats on the site itself. They were the common pipistrelle and soprano pipistrelle. According to the Bat Conservation Trust, in the UK, bat populations have declined considerably over the last century and are still under threat. Emma added: "Despite not finding roosting bats, we still wanted to make sure we protected the bat population and gave them a home for the future so we have installed two bat boxes on the side of the

building. "I have learnt a lot about bats and hope that the new boxes will become homes to new two-winged families in the area." Bats play several roles in the environment including helping to pollinate flowers and spread seeds as well as being a pest control by eating insects. NAVY TEAM SUPPORTS ELSON JUNIOR SCHOOL INITIATIVE

A group of Year 6 pupils from Elson Junior School have just ‘graduated’ from their 5-week course working with naval personnel from HMS Collingwood on a variety of leadership activities looking at the Navy’s core values.The naval personnel from Victory Squadron worked with 9 children from the school, providing 5 1- hour sessions, weekly at the Gosport premises, with the final one taking place at HMS Collingwood, for the graduation ceremony. The sessions focused on helping the children develop utilising the Navy’s C2DRIL; Courage, Commitment, Discipline, Respect, Integrity and Leadership, and how these qualities can be incorporated into the Navy’s various roles. Lieutenant Peter Taylor and Leading Physical Trainer Bradley Lotts visited the school to deliver a variety of activities including knot tying, flag work, marching practice and various fun team

HOOD FINDS FINAL RESTING PLACE AT HMS COLLINGWOOD

A fine print of HMS Hood, signed by the ship’s last survivor, has a new home in the building in HMS Collingwood that bears its name. The print has been kindly donated by Mrs Linda Oxford, who discovered the print when clearing out her late husband’s possessions. John Oxford served at HMS Collingwood during the 1970s, firstly as a trainee and ultimately as a trainer, and Linda thought he would be pleased to learn that the image had found a home at the Establishment. HMS Hood, commissioned in 1920, was the Royal Navy’s last battle cruiser and, by the start of the Second World War was in

building and leadership tasks. Lieutenant Taylor was the Liaison Officer for the programme. He said “It has been a real rewarding experience watching the development of these pupils over the past 5 weeks. They met the challenges set out for them with courage and commitment which are 2 of our Naval core values” When asked how things had gone Rebecca Hull, Family Link Worker based at the school said, “This has been brilliant. It was aimed to raise their aspirations, to try and help them see how the things they learn in school can help them throughout their lives, that school is not just about academic lessons, its about them developing as individuals.” Commander Mark Walker, Commanding Officer, HMS Collingwood, had the honour to present the pupils with their certificates. On addressing them afterwards, he gave them an overview of his role and his career. When he asked them if they had enjoyed themselves he got a resounding “YES!”. danger of becoming obsolete. A major rebuild was planned but the outbreak of war scuppered these plans and she entered battle without the proposed modifications. On 24 May 1941, as she took part in the Battle of the Denmark strait, she engage the German battleship Bismarck but sustained a direct hit, sinking swiftly with the loss of 1,415 men. Only three crewmen survived. John Oxford’s print was signed by the last of the Hood’s survivors Ted Briggs, who died on 21 September 2004. Linda Oxford explained why she decided to donate the print saying, “I knew my husband had spent time here during his naval career and I’m pleased I’ve been able to do something to remember that. I spoke to both of my sons and they agreed this is a good decision and I hope my late husband would be pleased too.” Commander Mark Walker as Commanding Officer of HMS Collingwood received the print on behalf of the Establishment. ENGINEERS CELEBRATE THEIR 182ND BIRTHDAY

Personnel from across HMS Collingwood came together recently to celebrate the “birth” of the Engineering Branch of the Royal Navy, nearly two centuries ago. Although steam propulsion was introduced to the Royal Navy in 1812, the early ships were manned by civilian engineers employed on an ad hoc basis. By 1837 with 27 steam vessels in the Fleet it was clear that more formal management arrangements for engineers were needed and so early that year the post of Comptroller of the Steam Machinery and Packet Department was created. Then on 19 July 1837 an Order in Council was issued placing engineers onto a permanent footing, “with such rank and pay as appears to be fitting for persons charged with the performance of such important and responsible duties”. On 19 July every year, engineering staff at HMS Collingwood invite personnel across the Base to celebrate with a rousing chorus of “Happy Birthday” and a specially decorated cake. This year, the cake was cut by the youngest engineer present, 18-year-old Engineering Technician (ET) Shaun Allan, who has only been at the Establishment for 4 months. He said, “I’m enjoying my time here at HMS Collingwood. I joined the Royal Navy because I wanted to travel the world and fix things!” ET Nathan Mukoro, 19, shares his birthday with the Engineering Branch. He said, “I have an engineering background because my uncle was an engineer which is why I chose this branch. It’s like a family now!”

HMS COLLINGWOOD SAILOR CELEBRATES BASE’S FREEDOM OF STAFFORD

Chief Petty Officer (CPO) Leigh “Bobby” Ball was proud to represent HMS Collingwood at a recent ceremony in Stone, Staffordshire. The occasion was the official “swearing-in” of the new mayor of Stone, Councillor Mark Green, at the Parish Church of St Michael and St Wulfad, followed by a march through the town by serving members of the military, civic officials, local army and sea cadets and members of the St Vincent Association. HMS Collingwood is privileged to hold the freedom of the Borough of Stafford and Stoke after inheriting the honour when Gosport training establishment HMS St Vincent closed in 1969. The Base was named after Stone-born Admiral of the Fleet John Jervis, 1st Earl of St Vincent, who served alongside Nelson and Collingwood and a figurehead depicting the Admiral still welcomes visitors to HMS Collingwood today. CPO Ball was the first representative from HMS Collingwood to take part in the ceremony for 5 years and was honoured to be asked to ring “eight bells” on the St Vincent

Lieutenant Commander Tim Lawrenson explained why he felt the birthday commemoration was so important. He said, “We need to celebrate engineering because, across the country, we’re not producing enough engineers. If we don’t take pride in what we do, why would anyone else want to do it? In difficult situations we do a great job and the Royal Navy recognises the skills we’ve got. On ship, this signifies the end of the watch and officially marked the end of the previous Mayor’s tenure and the start of the new. Bobby said, “I thoroughly enjoyed the event, and despite the rain, it was an impressive sight to see everyone marching through the town. I live in Staffordshire, which is why I was asked to attend on behalf of HMS Collingwood. Even though I am due to leave Collingwood in October, I’m keen to continue to represent the Royal Navy in future ceremonies here. CHARITIES RECEIVE DONATIONS FROM HMS COLLINGWOOD OPEN DAY 2019 Representatives from local and naval charities, paid a visit to HMS Collingwood recently to attend a special reception. During the event each charity was presented with a donation from monies raised during the Establishment’s Open Day on 1 June. Donations were made to: The Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity, The Mayor of Fareham’s Charities: Fareport Talking News, 1350 (Fareham & District) Squadron Air Training Corps, The Rowans Hospice, The Rainbow Centre, Warsash Sea Cadets, 5th Gosport Sea Cadets, HMS Collingwood Volunteer Cadet Corps, 9th Platoon Army Cadet Force, Charlie’s Beach Hut. Also in attendance at the event were representatives from some of the Open Day’s Commercial sponsors, whose support made the event possible; Babcock International, Cobham Aviation Services, Centerprise International, Lockheed Martin UK and Saab Seaeye. Other sponsors unable to attend on the day were MBDA and Hendy Ford. Commander Mark Walker, Commanding Officer, HMS Collingwood, welcomed the visitors and presented the cheques to the charities. HMS COLLINGWOOD INVITES VETERANS TO CEREMONIAL DIVISIONS

Personnel taking part in HMS Collingwood’s Ceremonial Divisions recently had more critical eyes watching them than usual as the Base welcomed three veterans to view the event. Stanley Richardson, Ray Pinn and Gerry England watched as over 700 sailors from across the Maritime Warfare School and HMS Collingwood paraded in front of Reviewing Officer First Sea Lord and Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral Tony Radakin CB, ADC. Stanley Richardson at 99 years of age was the oldest veteran present, starting his Naval career at HMS Ganges at the age of 16, where he was the “button boy” climbing to the very top of the famous mast that stood there. He went on to serve at the Battle of Taranto and also helped clear the jungle, using elephants, in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) to create airstrips. During D-Day Stanley served at nearby HMS Daedalus working around the clock to service and repair the aircraft that flew 400 missions from there and recently unveiled a plaque to commemorate those pilots. Stanley was accompanied to Collingwood by his son Stuart and his daughter-in-law Karen. Speaking for his father, Stuart said, “Stanley was so thrilled to be invited to HMS Collingwood by Commander Mark Walker and was so proud to be presented to the First Sea Lord Tony Radakin, a fellow Northerner, and they chatted happily together along with other senior officers, which Stanley so loved. He is a hero to all our family

and to be back with the Royal Navy/Fleet Air Arm he said this was probably the best day of his life and, in his 100th year, a great honour. He said he was so lucky to make it through the war years and he was only doing his job.” The Base welcomed two other veterans to watch the proceedings, Ray Pinn and Gerry England, representing the Royal Marines and Royal Navy respectively, whose visit was organised by the Portsmouth branch of Age UK. Boasting over thirty years’ service between them, they had served across the world including Malta, the Far East and the Caribbean. The veterans were also delighted to meet Collingwood’s Volunteer Cadet Corps, representing the younger generation and the possible future of the Royal Navy, who marched smartly behind the adult sailors, earning a salute from the First Sea Lord and a warm round of applause from the other VIPs. Berry, has just completed her first Triathlon. Swimming 400 metres, cycling 25 km and running 5km; Sarah completed the course in less than two hours. “This cause is important to me as both my father and my step children's mother died far too young as a result of cardiac arrest and my husband, Mike, had a double by-pass operation four years ago. So heart disease has affected our family in a number of ways.” Meon Valley Heartstart, is a British Heart Foundation (BHF) affiliated group in our local area. It provides free emergency life-saving skills training in Southern Hampshire. As a small organisation, completely run by volunteers, it's only source of income is donations. Last year alone it trained over 4,600 people in how to save a life. For the past couple of years Sarah has helped out in a voluntary capacity raising their local public awareness. Sarah said: “I am so delighted that so many family and friends have donated to this cause; thank you.” The BHF estimates that only 8% of people in the UK who suffer a cardiac arrest out-of-hospital will survive. This number could be increased substantially if more people knew how to administer CPR. This is a major component of what Meon Valley Heartstart teaches in schools, to community groups and to the general public. Cooking up delights with surplus food to save it from going to waste

The team of cooks at the children’s centres were awarded a prize for team of the year, for its innovation and creativity making fabulous meals from surplus food which would have normally been wasted. Jackie Warren CEO at Growing Places explains; “We all know that food waste is a real issue and by joining with FareShare we can do our bit to reduce food waste and reduce our food bills too, without compromising on nutritious meals for our children and families. "However, having a membership with FareShare means our cooks never know what produce is going to arrive so they must be so creative with their menus. They involve the children and team members in creating fun, nutritious meals that the children and adults thoroughly enjoy. “There is a buzz about food as the children see what arrives and the cooks talk to them and share ideas for foods that they have never seen or tasted before, like artichokes, asparagus and different types of mushrooms. “There is usually a lot of seasonal fresh produce and this really takes some imagination as to how to use it all.”

Local children’s care centres, Growing Places, with settings in Waterlooville, Fareham and Havant have been invited to attend a specially developed Tesco Community Cookery School, for its campaign to cut food waste. Tesco Community Cookery School working with Jaime Oliver and its top food development chefs have extended the invitation to the centre’s cooks after it joined with a project called FareShare, last year, which is a charitable organisation who work with supermarkets to reduce food waste in the area.

We redistribute good food that would otherwise go to waste to frontline charities and community groups that support vulnerable people. By ensuring good food is not wasted we turn an environmental problem into a social solution. For more than 25 years FareShare has been working with the food industry to identify quality, in date surplus food that can be redistributed to charities. FareShare reaches over 1,960 towns and cities year and supports 925,000 people every week. The 11,000 charities and community groups that receive food through FareShare provide a lifeline to vulnerable people, including homeless hostels, children’s breakfast clubs and lunch clubs for older people. By receiving food through FareShare, these organisations are better able to provide nutritious meals alongside life-changing support. Food poverty in the UK • 8.4 million people in the UK, the equivalent of the entire population of London, don’t get enough food to eat • People in food poverty are those who don’t have continuous access to affordable, nutritious food. It includes those on low or no income, but also encompasses people affected by physical or mental illness, addiction, relationship breakdowns and so on. Food waste in the UK • 1.9 million tonnes of food is wasted every year in the supply chain in the UK • Wrap estimates at least 250,000 tonnes of surplus food from the food and drink industry could be redistributed to feed people each year. This is enough for at least 650 million meals for people in need. • FareShare currently handles approximately 7% of the surplus food available in the UK. • Last year FareShare redistributed enough food for 46.5 million meals. The majority of this food is fresh, such as fruit, vegetables, meat and dairy products. • ‘surplus’ applies to any food that does not have a commercial outlet but is within date and can still be consumed. It has become surplus for various reasons including overproduction, errors in forecasting, incorrect labelling and damaged packaging.

The food helps charities do more: • 70% indicate that the quality of food they are providing has increased. • FareShare enables charities to reinvest £2.3 million a year into other areas and support services, such as general overheads and bills, activities and training for clients or additional staff. The food has an impact of beneficiaries too: • 77% of FareShare’s charity members agree that FareShare food has improved their clients’ diet. • 62% agree that FareShare food means that clients worry less about money. • 75% say the food enables them to better engage with their clients.

Fareham Nomads Swimmers SMASH the British Summer Championships, National Summer Meet and the Swim England Open Water Championships.

Fareham Nomads swimmers certainly did themselves and the club proud at the recent British Summer Championships, English National Summer Meet and the Swim England Open Water Age Group Championships. The prestigious British Summer Championships 2019 were held across six days at Tollcross ISC in Glasgow from 23–28th July. The Championships form part of a broader Performance Pathway Strategy aimed at increasing and supporting junior talent on the journey towards senior medal-winning performance, as well as offering more athletes across the home nations an opportunity to compete at one of the end of season events. 3 Fareham Nomads swimmers qualified for the British Championships. (Joe Davies, Lydia Parker and Charlie Holyer). • Charlie Holyer swam in the 400m Freestyle (13/14 years age group) and placed 16th with a time of 4.25.15. He also swam incredibly well in the 200m Freestyle and got through to the finals with a time of 2.03.64 (placing 10th in the final). • Joe Davies swam in the 100m Backstroke (16 years age group) and placed 19th with a time of 1.01.55 he was also in the 200m Backstroke (16 years age group) and placed 11th with a time of 2.11.85. • Lydia Parker swam in the 200m Freestyle (15 years age group) and placed 18th with a time of 2.11.27. The National Summer Meet 2019 is Swim England’s biggest domestic swimming event of the year and was held at Ponds Forge, Sheffield from 31 July – 4 August. The Summer Meet forms part of a swimming competition structure in Great Britain whereby the top ranked swimmers in each event are invited to compete at the British Swimming Summer Championships.

The next ranked swimmers at English affiliated clubs – or those who have chosen to be ranked as an English swimmer – are invited to compete at the English Nationals. 3 Fareham Nomads swimmers qualified for the English Nationals - Lydia Parker, Hannah Cooper and Charlie Holyer. • Charlie Holyer took the competition by storm and brought home several gold medals and impressive personal best times. Charlie swan in the 1500m Freestyle with a time of 17.07.04 and came home in first place with a gold medal. He also came first in the 800m Freestyle with a time of 8.58.02, plus he placed 8th in the 100m Freestyle earning him a place in the finals where he finished 10th with a time of 57.92. • Hannah Cooper swam in the 100m Breaststroke and placed 4th with a time of 1.15.10 earning herself a place in the finals where she placed 3rd and brought home the Bronze medal. • Lydia Parker competed in the 100m Fly and placed 5th with a time of 105.62. In the finals Lydia placed 6th with an impressive time of 105.49. Swim England Open Water National Age Group Championships 2019 were held on the 5th August at Thrybergh Country Park, Rotherham. Fareham Town Youth FC is expanding its girls section

With the addition of the following teams next season: U8 (current school years 1 and 2) U9 (current school years 2 and 3) U10 (current school years 3 and 4) U11 (current school years 4 and 5) U12 (current school years 5 and 6) U14 (current school years 7 and 8)

U9 to U14 teams will compete in the Hampshire County Girls League on Saturday’s, and in addition the U10 and U11 team’s will compete in a Sunday mixed competition. The teams currently train twice a week with a number of friendlies and tournaments booked in over the summer period.All players within the set-up are coached to a high level, using a clear technical programme, with player development at the forefront of everything we do. The teams also have a robust system of play which is embedded across all age groups.In addition, the club also runs two SSE Wildcats’ Centres for girls in current school years 1-6. We are especially looking for players at the U8, U9, U12 and U14 age groups and have limited spaces at U10 and U11. A Hampshire artist, who works in oils and mixed media, has had two paintings selected for a Royal society exhibition.

Claire Wiltsher from Lyndhurst has had Spatial Connection 2, measuring 50 x 50cm and Time Collector VI, measuring 100 x 100cm selected for the important Royal Society of Marine Artists Annual Exhibition 2019. Her winter seascapes are inspired by Welsh coastal regions while her moody greys, blues and ochre reflect a tradition of British romantic painting. The society received over 1,200 entries this year, which makes this achievement all the more impressive. The exhibition from October 8 to 19 takes place at Mall Galleries, London.

Solent LEP announces new funding to back business and productivity in the region The Solent Enterprise Partnership (LEP) is announcing a broad range of funding that will help all sizes of businesses and organisations, with the aim of supporting job creation, safeguarding existing jobs, increasing profitability and helping the economy to grow in the region. It is calling on those looking to start-up new businesses, those looking for money to get a particular project up-and-running, or those who need funding to support large-scale projects or programmes to come and talk to them about the funding available. The LEP is particularly keen to receive applications that will support emerging strengths highlighted through consultation work with Solent residents and organisations in order to develop a Local Industrial Strategy for the region that will take it successfully into 2050. This includes: · Marine and Maritime · Advanced Manufacturing · Aerospace · Defence · Life Science and Healthcare · Digital and Creative Industries · Oil and Gas · Information Economy · Visitor Economy · Construction · Clean / Green Technology In addition, the new funding will support proposals to improve access and understanding of technical data, as well as those that enhance employer-led skills training in the region. Ian Diamond Appointed as UK's National Statistician Her Majesty the Queen, on the advice of the Prime Minister, has appointed Professor Sir Ian Diamond as National Statistician. Sir Ian succeeds John Pullinger, who retired at the end of June. The National Statistician is the Chief Executive of the UK Statistics Authority, Permanent Secretary of the Office for National Statistics and Head of the Government Statistical Service. As Chief Executive of the UK Statistics Authority, Sir Ian will be an executive member of the Board of the UK Statistics Authority. Sir Ian’s career spans many areas of social and official statistics. Most recently, he served as Principal and Vice Chancellor of the University of Aberdeen, and prior to that held the role of Chief Executive of the Economic and Social Research Council. He is also a Fellow of the British Academy, Royal Society of Edinburgh and the Academy of Social Sciences. Sir David Norgrove, Chair of the UK Statistics Authority, warmly welcomed Sir Ian’s appointment: “I am delighted that we have appointed Sir Ian as the UK Statistics Authority’s new Chief Executive and National Statistician. I’m separating from my partner - are there alternatives to Court proceedings?

It is always very difficult when a relationship comes to an end or breaks down; even if you both agree that it’s just not working anymore you can be losing your best friend, your lover and your confidant all in one go. Action on climate change at heart of bus industry’s vision for the future • Working with government to make all new buses ultra-low or zero emission from 2025. • Reduced travel costs for job seekers and apprentices. • Bus journey time targets proposed for transport authorities to speed up services. • Introduction of price capped daily and weekly ticketing in urban areas. • Joint project to develop sustainable transport for rural areas. • Target of one billion extra bus passengers a year by 2030. Bus operators across England are setting out a bold strategy to work with government to improve services, help tackle climate change and get a billion more passenger journeys by bus by 2030. The new strategy Moving Forward Together has been launched today by the Confederation of Passenger Transport (CPT). The strategy includes new commitments from the industry, including a pledge to work with government to make every new bus an ultra-low or zero emission bus from 2025 The CPT is the voice for bus and coach operators across the UK, representing over 95% of the bus industry including the major operators Arriva, First Group, Go Ahead, National Express and Stagecoach as well as hundreds of smaller operators. Additional commitments in the strategy include reducing travel costs for job seekers and apprentices by 2021, introducing price-capped daily and weekly tickets across multiple operators by 2022 in urban areas and working with government to develop innovative sustainable solutions to rural transport. Alongside the industry’s commitments CPT is calling on the Government to introduce a national bus strategy to help deliver better bus services across England. This would include bus journey time targets for local transport authorities, speeding up millions of journeys to work, school and leisure and encouraging more people to get on the bus. Graham Vidler, CPT Chief Executive said: “Buses are already the cleanest form of road transport and have a crucial role to play in tackling environmental issues and helping to meet important targets on improving air quality and reducing carbon emissions. “With the right support from government to make the transition the bus industry will buy only ultra-low or zero emission buses by 2025, reducing CO2 emissions by half a million tonnes a year.” Buses are a vital part of the UK’s infrastructure with passengers generating

£64 billion of economic output annually. Each person takes around 50 bus trips per year and 60% of all public transport journeys are taken by bus. Every day, over two million people all over the country travel to work by bus, and a million more to school or college. Graham Vidler continues: “We can do even more to tackle climate change and improve air quality by getting people out of their cars and onto the bus. If everyone switched just one car journey a month to bus, there would be a billion fewer car journeys and a saving of two million tonnes of CO2 a year. “Better bus services are the key to shifting travel habits and growing the significant economic contribution the industry makes. We know that congestion remains the biggest barrier to increasing passenger numbers in towns and cities and that many rural communities feel current bus services don’t meet their needs. We’ll continue to invest in better buses with better facilities and simpler ticketing. We need government to incentivise local authorities to cut congestion and work with us to examine new ways of delivering transport services that work for more isolated communities”. Buses Minister, Baroness Vere said: “Buses link people with work, school, friends and family and are vital to helping drive down emissions by providing a greener travel option. “That’s why this Government is spending an additional £200 million on boosting bus services. This is on top of £250 million already spent each year, as well as funding for a range of low-emission technologies across the sector. “The Confederation of Passenger Transport’s strategy emphasises the importance of the bus industry and I look forward to working with them to continue to bolster bus services across the country.”

MERCY SHIPS International Surgical Care Mission Charity works to improve the Health Care systems of many developing countries, by providing direct surgical facilities aboard a hospital ship. It reduces the backlog of surgical patients. It is estimated that more than 17 million people die every year from conditions requiring surgical care. Rotary in Great Britain and Ireland is working to coordinate a $1million contribution to this cause. If you would like to contribute to this cause, please get in touch. Longstock Water Gardens is owned and managed by Waitrose, the garden covers seven acres and the crystal clear river Test flows for two and a half acres, connecting the two islands and woodland valleys of Longstock and Leckford together. It was created by the Beddington family in the 1930's and further developed by John Spedan Lewis in the 1940’s as a place to reflect and relax, resulting in a true spectacle, hosting an array of plants from around the world. BW Rotary club organised a summer Sunday outing in August.

HART is the Humanitarian Aid Relief Trust, and local Trustee and Board member Jo Russell, (pictured), gave a presentation to the club on the subject in July. Their mission is to support people suffering from conflict and persecution in places with no international attention or outside help. One of their slogans is: ‘Without healthcare, people die’: they work with local partners to deliver emergency health care provision in conflict regions, making medicine available for people who would otherwise die from preventable disease and treatable wounds. BW Rotary will be presenting HART with a cheque to support their work. It will take him until 10th October, with some breaks to meet up with Rotaract Clubs and friends along the way. The Complete Hyperloop Passenger Experience in Virtual Reality Debuts at SpaceX INDG and AltSpace, the computer graphics (CG) specialists, in Los Angeles, 16 July 2019 unveiled the most holistic and immersive virtual reality (VR) experience of a Hyperloop journey, from entering the station to travelling in a pod, in a vivid production that gives a glimpse into the future of high-speed transport. The panoramic VR experience was unveiled at Elon Musk’s SpaceX headquarters in California while hosting the 2019 SpaceX Hyperloop Pod Competition. Mr Musk conceived Hyperloop in 2013 as a revolutionary highspeed ground transport system. His concept is now being worked on around the globe by the world's top engineers, architects and designers. The VR experience is a virtual model of the Hyperloop being developed by the award-winning team at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) in the Netherlands. The hyper-modern design and streamlined 3-D experience, which echoes AltSpace and INDG’s vision to offer an unparalleled digital experience, has been created for the Dutch team as it competes in the 2019 Hyperloop Pod Competition. It is the third year that Delft Hyperloop is competing in the SpaceX Hyperloop Pod Competition having won first place in 2017. This year, twenty teams from around the globe will compete to achieve the fastest top speed along the fully enclosed 1.25 km test track. This is the second Hyperloop VR experience INDG has worked on, previously creating an interactive model and exploding view of TU Delft’s entry to the inaugural SpaceX competition. For this year’s launch and as creative lead, INDG, the CG specialists focusing on physical goods, brought AltSpace onboard to help virtually bring the Dutch team’s ‘Atlas 02’ pod to life. The result is an experience that reflects INDG’s strong eye-for-detail in creating photorealistic 3-D content. Being responsible for the visual and technical aspects of the VR experience, AltSpace was invited to recreate wide-ranging station facilities, the pod’s minimalistic interior and exterior design, as well as panoramic views, infographic screens, and navigational signage. November 5, 6 - Taurids Meteor Shower. The Taurids is a long-running minor meteor shower producing about 5-10 meteors per hour. It consists of two seperate streams making it unusual. The first stream is produced by dust grains left behind by Asteroid 2004 TG10. The second is produced by debris left behind by Comet 2P Encke. This annual shower runs from September 7 to December 10, peaking on the the night of November 5. The first quarter moon will set shortly after midnight leaving dark skies for viewing. Meteors will radiate from the constellation Taurus, but can appear anywhere in the sky.

2019 Cosmic Calendar of Astronomical Events September/ November September 23 - September Equinox. The September equinox occur at 07:50 UTC. The Sun will shine over the equator and there will be nearly equal amounts of night and day throughout the world. This is also the first day of autumn in the Northern Hemisphere and the first day of spring in the Southern Hemisphere. September 28 - New Moon. The Moon will be on the same side of the Earth as the Sun and so it will not be seen in the night sky. This phase occurs at 18:26 UTC. This is the best time of the month to observe galaxies and star clusters due to the lack of lunar light interference. October 8 - Draconids Meteor Shower. The Draconids meteor shower produces about 10 meteors per hour. Being produced by dust grains left behind by comet a comet first discovered in 1900 known as the 21P Giacobini-Zinner. The Draconids is unusual due to it being best seen in the early evening instead of early morning. It is an annual shower running from October 6-10 and peaks on the the night of the 8th. The first quarter moon will set just after midnight which means dark skies will help in viewing the meteors. Meteors will radiate from the constellation Draco, but will appear anywhere in the sky. October 13 - Full Moon. The Moon will be located on the opposite side of the Earth as the Sun with its face being fully illuminated. This phase occurs at 21:09 UTC. This full moon was known by early Native American tribes as the Full Hunters Moon because at this time of year the leaves are falling and the game is fat and ready to hunt. October 20 - Mercury at Greatest Eastern Elongation. The planet Mercury reaches its greatest eastern elongation of 24.6 degrees from the Sun. This means it is the best time to view Mercury as it will be at its highest point above the horizon in the evening. Look for the planet low in the western sky just after sunset. October 21, 22 - Orionids Meteor Shower. The Orionids produces up to 20 meteors per hour at its peak, and is produced by dust grains left behind by an ancient comet, Halley. This annual shower runs from October 2 to November 7 with its peak on the night of October 21 and the morning of October 22. Meteors will radiate from the constellation Orion, but can appear anywhere in the sky.

November 11 - Rare Transit of Mercury Across the Sun. The planet Mercury will move directly between the Earth and the Sun. Viewers with telescopes and approved solar filters will be able to observe the dark disk of the planet Mercury moving across the face of the Sun. This is an extremely rare event that occurs only once every few years. The next transit of Mercury will not take place until 2039. This transit will be visible throughout all of South America and Central America, and parts of North America, Mexico, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. The best place to view this event in its entirety will be in the Americas. November 12 - Full Moon. The Moon will be located on the opposite side of the Earth as the Sun with its face being fully illuminated. This phase occurs at 13:36 UTC. This full moon was known by early Native American tribes as the Full Beaver Moon because this was the time of year to set the beaver traps before the swamps and rivers froze. November 17, 18 - Leonids Meteor Shower. The Leonids is an average shower, which produces up to 15 meteors per hour at its peak. This shower is unique in that it has a cyclonic peak about every 33 years where hundreds of meteors per hour can be seen. That last of these occurred in 2001, it is produced by dust grains left behind by comet Tempel-Tuttle discovered in 1865. This annual shower runs from November 6-30, peaking on the night of the 17th and morning of the 18th. The second quarter moon will block many of the fainter meteors this year, patience being a virtue you should be able to catch quite a few of the brightest ones. Meteors will radiate from the constellation Leo, but can appear anywhere in the sky. November 24 - Conjunction of Venus and Jupiter. A conjunction of Venus and Jupiter will be visible on November 24. The two bright planets will be visible within 1.4 degrees of each other in the evening sky. Look for this impressive sight in the western sky just after sunset. November 26 - New Moon. The Moon will located on the same side of the Earth as the Sun and will not be visible in the night sky. This phase occurs at 15:06 UTC. This is the best time of the month to observe galaxies and star clusters because there is no moonlight to interfere. November 28 - Mercury at Greatest Western Elongation. The planet Mercury reaches greatest western elongation of 20.1 degrees from the Sun. This is the best time to view Mercury since it will be at its highest point above the horizon in the morning sky. Fareham College Awarded Share of £8.65 Million From the Department of Education Pictured: Andrew Kaye, Principal and CEO, Fareham College. Fareham College, rated Outstanding by Ofsted and winner of the TES FE College of the Year in 2018, has been awarded a substantial amount of funding from the Department for Education (DfE) T Level Capital programme which will enable the college to invest nearly £1m to further develop its world class facilities in 2020. The Further Education and Higher Education college is amongst only eleven T Level providers in the country set to benefit from a share of a £8.65 million investment, helping to build new classrooms and refurbish buildings before the new technical qualifications are rolled out nationally in September 2020. Fareham College has been awarded £446,625 from the DfE which has been match funded, bringing the total to £893,250. This is the first round of funding from the £38 million T Level Capital Fund, which is designed to ensure those opting to undertake T Levels are furnished with the knowledge and skill sets required to flourish in their chosen careers, whilst exceeding the needs of future employers. Fareham College’s Principal and Chief Executive, Andrew Kaye, said: “Today’s announcement by the Government is testament to the commitment we have made towards making the implementation of T Levels at Fareham College exemplary. “We are a major advocate of these new technical

qualifications and this capital investment will ensure our students continue to learn in an excellent environment, utilising our state-of-the-art facilities and equipment. “We are an innovative and entrepreneurial organisation and this investment will ensure our T Level students leave us feeling empowered to confidently make the best decisions for their futures and are fully armed with the skills they need to realise this. For our employers, our students will have the skills the workplace needs and demands to compete on a global playing field.” From next September, Fareham College will be delivering T Level courses, which are intended as a technical alternative to A Levels, in two areas, Digital Production, Design and Development and Education and Childcare. Fareham College has always been committed to offering its students modern working facilities with the very latest equipment and career-led curriculum. This is reinforced with the construction of its brand new £4.1m Civil Engineering Training Centre (CETC), which will deliver over 1,600 groundwork and civil engineering apprenticeships in its first five years, opening in September. Mr Kaye concluded: “The education sector is moving at such a fast pace and the implementation of T Levels could be one of the biggest changes to be seen in a generation. As a college we are delighted to be amongst the top elite in the country taking the lead with a qualification that is set to transform technical education.”

The choir has members from all local villages, and is formed from the four main vocal ranges: Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Bass. Although each range is currently well-represented by existing members, the organisers welcome applications to join regardless of voice type, to join the waiting list for when vacancies arise. Oktoberfest returns to bring steiner-swigging fun to Southampton Oktoberfest, the world’s most famous Bavarian festival, returns to Southampton this October. Taking place over Thursday 24 to Saturday 26 October, Oktoberfest Southampton is planned to be bigger and better than ever with special events planned for businesses and Prosecco lovers. The festival, which will again take place in Southampton’s Guildhall Square, has already welcomed more than 10,000 people since it launched in 2017. It gives guests the full Oktoberfest experience, with traditional Bavarian food, indulgent world-class beverages and live music, including a traditional Oompah band.Oktoberfest Southampton will be doing things differently this year with the launch of Big Werk Night Out, a special night for businesses across the South to come together for an epic work social, and the first ever Ladies Day. Spooky Wizard Weekend returns to Watercress Line this Halloween weekend

The Watercress Line is calling witches and wizards of all ages to come and make magic and mischief this Halloween with the return of the railway’s popular Wizard Weekend. The event returns with an exciting array of activities from on 26th - 27th October, 11am-4pm. It invites visitors to dress up as a Halloween spook and take unlimited rides on the Wizard Express steam train in one of the Watercress Line’s Harry Potter style coaches and walk in Harry’s footsteps on the real Kings Cross footbridge from the films. Visitors are also encouraged to borrow the railway’s Hogwarts costumes to dress up in character and take a selfie Little ones will also have the opportunity to watch how to make a witch’s broomstick, get their face painted into something scary and try their hand at some Halloween crafts. While spectacular owl and falcon displays, a host of creepy crawly creatures and the spooky miniature railway also promise to entertain the whole family.
