Swim School success at Open meet having recently turned 10 years of age. They relished the chance to show the coach what they could do and delivered fine performances. Joshua Beaudro swam hard to finish in first place in 100m breaststroke and collected a gold medal. He later added a bronze medal after finishing in third place in the 100m back stroke. Joshua also delivered a personal best in 50m breaststroke. Kyle Kirkland, also 10, was awarded a bronze for his hard fought third place in 50m backstroke. The two day meet saw the Locks Heath team amass nine Gold, ten Silver and 13 Bronze medals along with 66 personal best times as well as Qualifying Times for the 2015 Hampshire County Championships. Ten year old Scott Hutin and eleven year old Shannon Lamb collected six medals each. Scott received two Gold, two Silver and two Bronze medals. Shannon received three Gold, one Silver and two Bronze medals. Ten year old Evelyn Hall also went home well decorated with a Gold, two Silver and two Bronze medals. Thomas Larby, also ten years old, took four medals (three Silvers and a Bronze) as did his thirteen year old sister Jessica (a Gold, two Silvers and a Bronze). Nine year old Mia Day gained a medal of each colour and eleven year old James Hall took two Bronzes . May Fletcher (Gold), Jan Stoop (Bronze) and Hannah Roberts each went away with a medal. series of events and activities which explore sound in its widest context. This will be from instruments, musical forms, workshops and concerts. The project will culminate in the Summer Term 2015 with a participatory project involving pupils from Brookfield and their six feeder primary schools. Based around the concept of sound and embracing English, Maths, Science, Music and Technology, Brookfield will develop close working relationships with University students and lecturers plus a range of professional musicians funded by Turner Sims. Phase One begins on 17 November with poetry writing about the ‘sound of place’ with students being inspired by Max West, the Southampton Poet Laureate. Phase two will be launched on 27 and 28 November. Dr Steve Dorney from the University of Southampton Engineering Department will be inspiring students’ thinking about acoustics and acoustic properties.

Brief History of Parkers Photographic Back in April 1925 our founder Reginald Parker Snr. opened this store, which we still operate from today. After serving his apprenticeship in a Photographic Studio in Commercial Road Southampton, he then joined the merchant navy as a ships photographer, which allowed him to see the world and take many fascinating photographs of different countries which was beyond most people’s dreams at that time, this gave him the idea to open his own Photographic Store. At this time people were getting into taking Black and White roll films with their box brownies etc. and needed somewhere to get them processed, so we started a photo processing laboratory at the back of the shop to fulfil this need. It was so successful we started a delivery service to process films for local chemists and camera shops. In 1965 we were the first in Southampton area to open a new Laboratory to process colour films. With our Camera Department we were able to offer the complete service to all our Customers.

In 1962 Reginald Parker Jnr. the current Managing Director, joined the firm to manage the ever growing Camera Sales. In 1970 Mr Reg Parker Snr. retired and at the same time we sold the colour laboratory to a much larger company, allowing Mr Reg Parker jnr. to concentrate on the camera side of the business. With expansion in mind we purchased the old post office next door in 1986, we opened one of first Kodak Express Colour Labs in the Country, enabling our customers to have their colour films processed in One Hour. Stephen Parker joined the firm after leaving University as sales director. His knowledge in Digital Photograph is second to none. Stephen has opened and equipped three photo studios for customers to hire and take our in house photo shoots, also he has masterminded our own web site, enabling us to sell online. He is now in control in the general running of the business to this present day.

The Centenary Quay chapter in the Woolston regeneration story In just a few years Crest Nicholson’s Woolston based development, Centenary Quay, has evolved from a neglected stretch of land to a thriving and vibrant neighbourhood community. P.J. Drew (Engravers) Ltd Signs and Graphics In March 1965, Mary and I married and moved from Slough to Stubbington. Just a month later I followed in my Father’s footsteps and started my engraving business. To begin with I occupied part of another company’s workshop in Holt Road, Southampton, and then I worked from the canteen of Bardic Systems in Northam. After a few months I decided that I needed my own premises and found a shed in what was then called Whites Shipyard, now called Willments Shipyard, in Woolston, for the great sum of £65 per quarter. It was a rat infested property by the Itchen River with an outside urinal in a corrugated lean to that was shared by many. Every morning I had to open the door to the workshop and throw in tin cans to scare off the rats. The business grew and, after a few years, when I had employed more engravers, I purchased a section of land in Lower Vicarage Road and built the unit that we still occupy today. I went on to purchase the old Sholing Fruit Co. building next door and started a screen printing business – Henly Screen Printers Ltd – named after my wife’s maiden name. In the early days both of my daughters, Donna and Linda, used to come and work for me during their school holidays and eventually worked for me full time until they both left to start families. Donna has since returned and taken over the whole operation. With the help of the team Gary, Darren, Richard, Aaron, Emma, Geoff, Darren and Liam, she is doing a grand job of keeping the company progressing with new technology and has opened a shop on Portsmouth Road in addition to continuing to run our Lower Vicarage Road factory. We also have possibly the world’s oldest paper boy in the form of Bert, who, in spite of retiring from us in 2009 after 16 years service, stills comes in every morning with a newspaper for us.

Strands Hair Studio Strands Hair Studio, the hair colour, style and cut specialist is celebrating over 30 years of trading. Local man takes on “Tough Mudder” in mankini
A Whiteley man took on the Tough Mudder challenge last month in a mankini.
Frank Parker, 21, donned the sling swimsuit made famous by Sacha BaronCohen character Borat Sagdiev when he took on the gruelling obstacle course on
October 26. It was the 10th endurance event that he has taken part in recent months. He managed to raise £1,100 for Help the Heroes, after pledging to dress up in the unflattering garment.
Tough Mudder events feature between 10–12 mile-long military-style obstacle courses with challenges involving fire, water, electricity and heights. Frank said of the experience: “I was quite nervous at the ‘Icebar’, which is a skip full of ice. You had to dive down and go through tires before you could surface and climb out. It is 0 degrees and so cold.” “I would definitely do it again – but not in a mankini.” The event, held at the Matterley Bowl in Winchester, had close to 7,000 participants, raising over a million pounds for the army veterans charity.

Collingwood’s cake and coffee collection
Civilian and Military personnel from across HMS Collingwood took to the kitchens in order to fundraise for the annual Macmillan Cake and Coffee morning. Captain Steve Dainton CBE RN, Commanding Officer of HMS Collingwood kicked off the collection of Coffee Mornings
in aid of Macmillan with poignant words stating: “I am always impressed by the amount of events that personnel across Collingwood do in support of charities from big national ones to small local ones. Everyone is aware of the great work and support that Macmillan provides.” Several departments from across the Phase 2 training establishment decided to take part in the annual Coffee Mornings including the Chaplaincy, Medical Centre, Royal Navy Leadership Academy, Babcock Departments and the Executive Department. Able Seaman Charlotte Gilbert, who organised the Chaplaincy Macmillan Cake
and Coffee Morning, commented: “Many of my friends and family have been touched by Cancer. One of my colleagues had just received the diagnosis of terminal cancer. Often there’s nothing you can do. The Macmillan Cake and Coffee morning gives people the chance to raise money for future suffers.” Special thanks were given to Tracey Edgar, IBake of Gosport who donated lots of cupcakes and a cake towards the cake sale. This was the third successful year for the team from the Babcock Integrated Training Integrated Training Support Centre (ITSC) as they held a Macmillan Coffee morning where attendees had the chance to play some of the games that Macmillan had provided for organisers. Games included ‘Guess how many beans are in the jar’, ‘Guess how many 100s and 1000s are on the cake’ and ‘Spot the double shot’. For a competitive edge, guests were asked to vote on whose cakes were the best. Collectively, Departments across HMS Collingwood have raised over £1300.

Council awarded £50,000 for district heating scheme study Eastleigh Borough Council has been awarded over £50,000 by the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) to carry out a study into a possible district heating network in West End. A district energy centre at the Ageas Bowl would provide low cost, low carbon, heating and electricity to several commercial sites including the Ageas Bowl stadium, Holiday Inn Express, Virgin Active Health Club and the new Hilton Hotel at the Ageas Bowl. Eastleigh Borough Council is one of 32 local authorities in England and Wales to have been awarded grants through the Heat Networks Delivery Unit (HNDU). Cabinet Lead for Environment & Sustainability Cllr Louise Bloom, said: “This improves air quality by having fewer emissions and also supports our ongoing commitment to tackling climate change and offers the opportunity to grow the scheme to include residential homes in the future.” District heating networks supply heat to a number of buildings or dwellings from heat generated at a central source and supplied through a system of insulated pipes. Heat production is more energy efficient, delivers carbon savings, and can reduce consumer bills through more competitive wholesale fuel prices. It is planned that the feasibility study will be carried out and completed by spring 2015.

motoring We may be entering the tail end of 2014, but if I’m honest it feels like 2015 is already here. At The Loop we’re looking well ahead into next year, previewing some of 2015’s most exciting new cars. Expect all of them to do well, but some to be rarer than others. Niche cars like the Honda Civic Type R must be worth a few points in your mental book of I-Spy Cars and the new Audi R8 will be far from common. 2015 will be a vintage year for new releases though, and who knows what I’ll try out first hand next year. Thinking of changing your car next year? Read this before you go any further, as we preview some of the most important and exciting new cars set for 2015 launches. In no particular order, here’s the cars we reckon will make the most impact next year.
Jaguar XE This will be Jaguar’s most important new car release in decades. The XE will be competing in the cut-throat compact executive market sector, and will be competing alongside established competitors, mainly from German manufactures. This highly competitive market is one Jaguar haven’t had a presence in since 2009, after the X-Type’s demise. Jaguar has a lot riding on this car, but we have every confidence that they can make it a success.
Audi A4 Audi A4 buyers will for the first time have the option of hybrid technology. The usual petrol and diesel engines will still be offered though, but our prediction is that these more traditional ways or propulsion will continue to make up the bulk of Audi A4 sales. It will also be lighter, so improved handling and fuel economy is to be expected.
Honda Civic Type R Honda’s ninth generation Civic may have been out since 2011, but we’re still having to wait for the high performance Type R...Not for much longer though. The next Honda Civic Type R is due next year, and has undergone some radical changes. A traditional Type R mainstay has always been the use of naturally aspirated engines, but the new car will use a turbo charger, a first for the Civic Type R. This will be mated to a 2.0 petrol engine producing over 276 bhp. Expect it to be rather brisk...
Ford Mustang Is this the most exciting car coming to the UK in 2015? For the first time Ford’s iconic and much loved Mustang will be officially imported to the UK. While it may be an allAmerican icon, many will see it as the spiritual successor to the Ford Capri, and that has to be a good thing. Donkey jackets and fully dice at the ready then? Not quite. The new Mustang will be a very modern machine, and should be able to fight its European rivals on a level playing field: efficiency and handling are to be dramatically improved. Naturally, a V8 engine will be offered, joining an engine from Ford’s Ecoboost family offering over 300 bhp.
Volvo XC90 The third generation of Volvo’s SUV is set to go on sale next year, and is a huge improvement over the outgoing model as far as looks go. It promises a highly up-to-date and tech laden interior, which still retains the traditional Volvo traits of quality and luxury. With Volvo being Volvo, expect safety to be on this car’s agenda. It will also boast a hybrid engine option, which twins a powerful two litre engine to an electric motor.
Honda Jazz Honda’s supermini, the Jazz is another car entering it’s third generation next year. The new car will be bigger than the outgoing model, have more engine options than before and promises improved handling. Will it be enough to make waves in the supermini pond?
Audi R8 Audi’s flagship R8 supercar will be all new for 2015. Following Audi’s established styling ethos of evolution over revolution, the car doesn’t introduce any major visual changes, sticking to the same formula as before. Again, the mid-engined configuration will remain in place for the new car. Much of the R8’s technology will be shared with the Lamborghini Huracán, although the Audi will be slightly larger than the Lamborghini, to allow for more stability and improved comfort.

VW Passat The eighth generation VW Passat will be hitting the UK’s roads in January 2015, but VW are already taking orders. As before, the Passat will be available in saloon or estate form. For the first time, it will not be offered with a petrol engine at launch. VW will offer a variety of trim levels to suite most tastes and budgets though. Most exciting is the introduction of the Biturbo diesel, which could be game changer for the Passat However, it’s (mostly) business as usual.

Navy divers explode pillars in Stoke’s Bay
Royal Navy divers recently carried out a controlled explosion on two concrete and wood pillars in the aim to remove them and relieve sailors in the Solent of tangled nets and boating hazards. For years the two pillars have stood eight metres tall from off Stokes Bay, Gosport. They were the remains of an old pier used by Queen Victoria for safety and privacy crossing the Solent in the 1880s. The pier was constructed 1862-63 and the railway opened on 6 April 1863 to transport passengers to the ferry terminal on the pier, from where they could journey on, by steam boat to the Isle of Wight. With an advertised crossing time of 12 minutes, a 45 ton iron steamer began
making five passages per day, averaging 15 minutes per crossing and a 300 passenger capacity. The remaining pillars had proved to be an underwater nuisance over the decades with many sailors and fishermen scraping hulls or getting their fishing nets caught on them. As a result Royal Navy’s Southern Diving Unit Two (SDU2) were asked if they could remove the columns to gain experience and improve safety on the water. Leading Diver Luke Halbauer said: “There were two obstructions that were under the surface of the water, invisible unless at low tide for many years, causing problems for sailors using this part of the Solent.” “We first went down to

Why put off to tomorrow, what you can do today?
Taxpayers need to file their 2014 tax returns by 31st January 2015. But despite the best efforts of HM Revenue & Customs, taxpayers insist on leaving tax return preparation until the last minute. This coincides with the festive winter period which means nothing gets done in the month up until 2 January. This leaves less time to file and pay any tax owed before the 31 January 2015 deadline. The main advantages of filing a tax return early are as follows. Peace of Mind With your tax return completed and submitted early you can relax and enjoy the holiday period without a tax cloud looming over you. Cash flow management Early filing of your tax return, gives you time to plan for the tax bill and to manage your cash flow. If you pay your tax bill late, HMRC will charge you interest and late payment surcharges of up to 10%. Another benefit of filing early is that if your tax liability is less than £3,000 and you submit your tax return by 30th December 2014, you can choose to have your tax liability collected through your PAYE tax code which means it will be deducted from your wages or pension over the following year. Tax payments aren’t accelerated Even if you file your tax return early, you need only pay the tax liability by the normal due dates of 31st January 2015 and
if applicable, 31st July 2015 Tax refunds are made quickly If you file your tax return early, you should receive any tax refund you are due fairly soon after you’ve submitted it; HMRC do not wait until 31st January to pay you. Therefore, if you suspect you have overpaid tax and are due a refund, you should really prepare your tax return as soon as possible. Time If your affairs have changed this year and you have, losses or a significant amount of additional income, then preparing your return early can gives you the time to consider any tax planning opportunities which could lead to tax savings. Having plenty of time to prepare your return reduces the risk of errors being made, because you aren’t rushing to get it finished. Contacting HM Revenue & Customs Getting hold of HM Revenue & Customs is difficult at times, but it’s even more difficult around the tax return deadline. Avoid leaving your tax affairs until December or later; just in case you need to speak to them and can’t get through. If you are due a tax refund, you’re also likely to experience a longer turnaround time if you file your return during their peak times. Penalties HMRC have changed the penalty regime for late tax returns, and these are now significantly more than they used to be.
For example, the initial £100 penalty used to be reduced if you paid the tax on time or was capped to your tax liability. But the £100 penalty is now automatic. If your tax return is more than three months late, £10 daily penalties start to accumulate up to a maximum of £900. A penalty of the higher of £300 or 5% of your tax due is then charged if your return is 6 months late and again if it becomes over 12 months late. And all of these penalties are in addition to one another; rather than in place of. This can mean penalties for late tax returns can top over £1,600. Accountants & Advisers Using an accountant should take away the stress of filing a tax return and leave you to concentrate on running your business. Not only should penalties and interest be avoided, but accountants may be able to save or defer you tax. They should also keep you informed of your tax position and abreast of any changes in the tax regime. If you plan to use an accountant to deal with your affairs, you should be aware that some firms may charge you a premium if you deliver your records to them close to the deadline because they may have to pay overtime to staff in order to complete the tax returns in time. Moore McCusker, a local Chartered Tax adviser advises: “Taxpayers should provide the information to their advisers as quickly as possible so that if there is a problem the accountant can be held responsible”.

Rosetta comet landing site confirmed

Philae’s landing site, located on the smaller of the comet’s two lobes, was confirmed on 14 October. The Rosetta probe is conducting an unprecedented survey and analysis of the comet, a remnant of the early phases of Solar System’s 4.6 billion year history. Site J was selected after a hazard assessment was made of several potential landing sites, including a detailed boulder census. Rosetta will release Philae at 8.35am on 12 November at a distance of approximately 22.5km from the centre of the comet. Landing will be about seven hours later at around 3.30pm. After the release of Philae, Rosetta will manoeuvre up and away from the comet, before reorienting itself in order to establish communications with Philae. All being well, Rosetta and its lander will begin communications about two hours after separation. During the seven-hour descent, Philae
will take images and conduct science experiments, sampling the dust, gas and plasma environment close to the comet. It will take a ‘farewell’ image of the Rosetta shortly after separation, along with a number of images as it approaches the comet surface. It is expected that the first images from this sequence will be received on Earth several hours after separation. Once safely on the surface, Philae will take a panorama of its surroundings. The first sequence of surface science experiments will begin an hour after touchdown and will last for 64 hours, constrained by the lander’s battery. Longer-term study of the comet by Philae will depend on for how long and how well the batteries are able to recharge, which in turn is related to the amount of dust that settles on its solar panels. In any case, it is expected that by March 2015, as the comet moves closer in its orbit

towards the Sun, temperatures inside the lander will have reached levels too high to continue operations, and Philae’s science mission will come to an end. The Rosetta orbiter’s mission will continue for much longer. It will accompany the comet as it grows in activity until their closest approach to the Sun in August 2015 and then as they head back towards the outer Solar System. This unprecedented mission will study how a comet evolves and give important insights into the formation of our Solar System, and the origins of water and perhaps even life on Earth. With funding from the UK Space Agency and the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC), Rosetta is a mission with significant UK involvement from industry and science. UK scientists are involved in ten of the 21 experiments that Rosetta will carry out during its mission.

OSIRIS images of Rosetta’s comet show streams of dust fired into space
Rosetta’s comet 67P/ChuryumovGerasimenko has started to show an increase in visible activity. In the past months most of the dust emitted from the body’s surface looked like it originated from the neck region which connects the two lobes, images obtained by Rosetta’s scientific imaging system OSIRIS now show jets of dust along almost the
whole body of the comet. Currently, more than 450 million kilometres are separating 67P from the Sun. Based on a rich history of ground-based observations scientists expect a comet’s activity to pick-up noticeably once it comes within 300 million kilometres of the Sun. While the overall activity is increasing, the mission’s designated landing site on the

“head” of the comet still seems to be rather quiet. However, there is some indication that new active areas are waking up about one kilometre from landing area J. These will allow the lander’s instruments to study the comet’s activity from an even closer distance. To signify the importance of the Rosetta space probe, the European Space Agency (ESA) created a short film called ‘Ambition’ via collaboration between Platige Image and the ESA. Ambition was Directed by Tomek Bagiński and stars Aiden Gillen and Aisling Franciosi. Filmed on a location in Iceland, it was screened on 24 October 2014 during the British Film Institute’s celebration of Sci-Fi: Days of Fear and Wonder, at the Southbank in London and is available on YouTube. The editor was on the phone when Sally returned to the office. “So yes, we do intend to run the story, Max. Hi There! magazine has a duty to inform its readers… No, of course we’re not trying to ruin your client… Well, he should have been a bit more careful in his choice of lady friends, shouldn’t he? There’s no need to take that attitude, Max. The fact is – “ Slamming down the receiver, he turned to his assistant. “He rang off! Know what? I think perhaps we will have a go at ruining his client.” “There’s a couple of guys out there, Mike. I said you might be able to give them ten minutes. They’ve been waiting patiently for – “ “People shouldn’t think they can just walk in, Sal. Tell them to make an appointment, or else hand them over to one of the underlings.” Sally was getting used to her new boss’ brusque manner, though certainly not getting to like it. “They insist on seeing the editor himself, and you’re free until eleven, Mike. They’ve got what might be a good story. One of them claims to be incredibly old, although to look at him you’d – “ “Incredibly old! Everything’s incredibly something these days – incredibly difficult… an incredibly good time - there are other adjectives, you know.” “You’re too fastidious for this end of the publishing business, Mike,” replied Sally, tactfully refraining from pointing out that incredibly was in fact an adverb. “Actually, I was just repeating what his agent said. At least, that’s what he called himself – did all the talking.” “So how incredibly old does he reckon his client is?” “A hundred and fifty. Mind you, he certainly doesn’t look that old, but the way I see it – “ “Well, if he can prove he’s a hundred and fifty it’s got to be good for a column or two at least. Okay, Sal, go get ‘em.” “Do sit down, gentlemen,” said Sally, ushering in a sharp-featured fellow of about thirty and a smooth faced, sandy haired man with prominent blue eyes who looked little more than sixty. Mike glared at the latter. “I take it you’re the one who’s “incredibly old” – a hundred and fifty, you say?” “Yes this is Joe,” replied the younger man. “My name’s Tony Wilkins and I’m acting as his

agent. The thing is, you see – “ “You’re right, he is incredibly old – incredibly as in unbelievably! Sally, what were you thinking of? Wasting my time!” “I said he didn’t look a hundred and fifty, Mike, but – “ “I thought you meant he looked only about a hundred and ten.” “But don’t you think a fraud would have tried to appear a bit more convincing?” “Good point, lady,” said Wilkins. “If you’ll allow me to explain, Mr Editor…” “Go on, then. Make it snappy.” “Thank you. Now, I work at a hostel for destitute men. Yesterday Joe here wanders in. He’s in a very confused state of mind and no wonder. You see, he’d been abducted by aliens and they’d just returned him to Earth, and so – “ “Oh, I see! Of course their plastic surgery techniques would be centuries ahead of ours, wouldn’t they?” Wilkins flushed. “I don’t think you’re taking us seriously.” “Oh, but I am, and I’m thinking you’re a serious waste of time.” “We may as well hear him out now, Mike.” Sally was curious to know what might be coming next. “Thank you, lady. I’ll be brief. Joe here was born in 1864, making him a hundred and fifty years old, right? The thing is, though – and this is the crucial point – he was abducted way back in 1906. Now, I’m sure you know about time travel – “ “I do know it’s about time you travelled. Show them out, Sal.” “Wait, Mike, I think I understand what he’s getting at. There was this thing on the telly about Einstein’s Theory of Relativity… They reckon time slows down for you, relative to the place you set out from, when you travel through space at very high speeds.” Grabbing pen and notepad, Sally continued, “Born 1864… abducted in 1906… at the age of… forty-two… right, Joe?” “That’s right, miss.” “Oh, so he can speak, then!” said Mike in mock astonishment. “He’d have been in a different time zone, Mike, for… crikey! a hundred and eight years! But it wouldn’t have been a hundred and eight years for him.”

Wilkins beamed at Sally. “A very smart young lady you’ve got here, Mister Editor. Smart in more ways than one.” “Never mind the gallantry, it’s me you’ve got to impress. Okay,” Mike continued, turning to Joe, “now we’ve established that you can speak… these aliens - what did they look like? Little green men were they?” “Not green, no… pale complexion. About our size… two arms, two legs. Massive heads… a bit like the Mekon in the Dan Dare comic strip.” Mike gave a hoot of laughter. “Gotcha! Away from Earth since 1906! The Eagle comic came out in the 1950s and it folded years ago.” Joe opened his mouth, perhaps to speak, but if so, Wilkins beat him to it. “We happen to have an old Eagle Annual at the hostel. I showed it to Joe after he’d described his aliens to me.” “Got an answer to everything, haven’t you?” “It’s not a problem, when you’re telling the truth.” The editor turned again to Joe. “Must have been pretty scary for you.” “Only at first. They were very reassuring – told me I wasn’t in any danger.” “Speak English, did they? Or did you have to learn Alien?” “They didn’t speak, not speak as such… They… they…” “Communicated telepathically, Joe,” prompted Wilkins. “Yeah, they communicated telepathetically.” Ignoring Mike’s sniggers, Joe continued, “When you’re thinking, you sort of hear the words in your mind – it was like that. They could read my thoughts too.” “So, apart from the obvious delights of your company, what did these aliens want you for?” Sally could tell that her boss was beginning to enjoy himself, relishing the challenge to expose what he saw as a pair of fraudsters. She felt a bit sorry for the gentle-mannered Joe. If he was trying to deceive them it was surely the glib Wilkins who had put him up to it. It was the agent who replied to Mike’s question. “It seems they wanted to examine our human species. Asked thousands of questions about his life on Earth. And they conducted all sorts of tests – memory tests, comprehension tests, even mental arithmetic tests, didn’t they, Joe?” “They did, yeah. “
“And all conducted “telepathetically,” of course. I like that word of yours, Joe – that word that isn’t a proper word at all – seems appropriate somehow.” Wilkins frowned. “Look, if you’re going to keep making snide remarks…” “What other tests did you have to perform, Joe? Anything a bit more practical? No, Mr Wilkins, let him answer for himself.” “Practical… well, they did try to teach me to move objects, just by the power of thought.” “I’ve heard of that, Mike, it’s called telekinesis.” “I know what it’s called, thank you. And were you able to do it, Joe?” Joe gave a modest smile. “Not very well. Didn’t have a powerful enough mind, I suppose. I could often get things to wobble a bit, but I wasn’t much good at moving them from place to place.” “See that milk jug?” said Mike, pointing to the tray on Sally’s desk. “Make it wobble.” “Oh, I don’t know… I haven’t tried it since I’ve been back.” “Try it now. Don’t worry about spilling the milk, Sally’ll clean it up.” “Oh will she!” “Yes, Sally, she will and she’ll do it with a smile, because Hi There! magazine will have landed an amazing story. But don’t bother about a dishcloth just yet. Go on, then, Joe – convince me.” There was a hint of defiance in Joe’s voice as he said, “All right, I’ll give it a try. But don’t be surprised if it doesn’t work.” “I promise I won’t be.” With a look of intense concentration, Joe stared fixedly at the jug for about sixty seconds. Nothing happened. “It’s no good… I can’t… I don’t feel in the right state of mind…” “Oh, what a pity!” Wilkins placed a comforting hand on his companion’s shoulder. “Joe said he had his doubts. It might only work in a space environment. This doesn’t disprove his story.” Mike drummed his fingers on the desk. “Proof… how do we get proof? I know, let’s have a bit of family history. Full name, address, relatives. We might even be able to trace some of your descendants. Why, yes! Great, great, great, granddad Joe did disappear in 1906, never to be seen again.” “If only that were possible,” said Wilkins, shaking his head sadly. “But Joe can remember almost nothing of his life prior to his abduction. He’s not even sure of his surname – thinks it
might be Brown. My guess is that all those mind experiments he was subjected to may have somehow wiped his early memories.” “How very convenient! With the emphasis on the ‘con’! I’ve heard enough – on your way now.” “You mean you’re not interested in buying Joe’s story?” “I wouldn’t have it as a gift.” “In that case we shall be offering it to Swell magazine.” “I can honestly say I wish you the best of luck – nothing I’d like more than to see them make fools of themselves. Their office isn’t far from here. Left as you go out and they’re halfway down the fourth street on the right.” Wilkins got to his feet. “I know where they are, and I just want to say, I think you’ve been incredibly rude.” “If you knew me better you’d say I’d been incredibly patient. Show them out, Sal – incredibly quickly, if you don’t mind.” Mike’s feet were resting on his desk when Sally returned; a sure sign that he was feeling extra pleased with himself. “Talk about a pair of con men! I knew the family history angle would have them stumped.” “That Joe – he did seem very upset, Mike.” “Don’t you mean incredibly upset? Well, he would wouldn’t he? Thought there’d be some money coming his way. Let’s have another coffee, Sal, we’ve got twenty minutes before the boy band ex-groupie is due. Good old sex, drugs and rock and roll! Beats Abducted by Aliens crap any day.” Sally began to make coffee (Mike wouldn’t drink the stuff from the machines.) “This milk’s gone off,” she said, holding the jug to her nose. “And I bought it only this morning… But this seems perfectly all right and it’s the same milk,” she added, sniffing the remaining contents of the plastic container. “I know it sounds crazy, but could Joe’s attempt to move the jug have somehow –“ “Don’t be ridiculous. Just a coincidence. It’s quite warm today.” “Not that warm, surely? This milk’s curdled – look, smell.”
Mike did so. “Ugh! Could one of them have slipped something into the jug?” “Neither of them went near it. Besides, it’s not as though they knew you were going to challenge Joe to move the thing; they’d hardly have come armed with a milk contaminator.” Mike was looking worried now. “I wish I’d probed a bit deeper; not that I really believe their story, but I’d hate Swell to put one over on us. The big boss wouldn’t like that one bit. He’s still stroppy because HIi There! failed to get the heart-rending story of that woman from the TV cookery competition – the one who had the used cotton bud planted in her Bakewell tart.” “Yes, Swell really went to town with that story, didn’t they? My Nasal Cotton Bud Nightmare… We could have run Joe’s story from the “as-told-to-us” angle, Mike; we don’t have to vouch for the truth of everything we print.” “True… I wonder if they’re on their way to the Swell office? I don’t suppose I’d be able to catch up with them now…” Sally held out a scrap of paper. “Actually, that Wilkins bloke did give me his mobile number, just in case you changed your mind, but I didn’t think you’d – “ “Give it here! Why the hell didn’t you say before?” “Before what? Only a moment ago you were talking as though – “ Mike raised an imperious open hand. The gesture was somehow more offensive than a plain old “Belt up” would have been. Sally watched him frantically jabbing up the number; there were actually beads of sweat on his brow. She hesitated; but only for a moment. No, she couldn’t resist it: “You’ll need to be incredibly tactful,” she said sweetly.
