They can transform existing units by fitting new doors, drawer fronts, worktops and trims or supplying and fitting a complete, new, fitted kitchen or bedroom - offering a wide range of door designs and finishes. As part of a transformation, changes can be made to the layout and, perhaps, add extra units or new storage baskets to make your existing kitchen more usable. Many existing kitchens are already designed in the most practical way and the advantages of a transformation are: reduced cost, less time taken and much less mess and disruption to the household. 3K4K team complete their marathon 16 day 3 peak challenge Last month saw the 3K4K team ride into Bishops Waltham town square 16 days after departing, having completed their marathon 3 Klimbs 4 Kids challenge. They were greeted by over a hundred cheering family, friends and well-wishers. Over the course of the 16 days the team cycled in excess of 1400 miles and climbed the three highest peaks in the UK (Snowdon, Scafell Pike and Ben Nevis) in some fantastic weather and through some stunning countryside. 3K4K cyclist and team leader Ady Smith commented, “I am really proud of the team in completing the challenge, it is a fantastic achievement. The support we have received before during and now on our return has been fantastic and I would like to thank all those involved. I would also like to thank all those who have sponsored us and helped us raise much needed funds for our chosen charities – Leukaemia Busters and The Piam Brown Ward. I would also like to thank all of our sponsors, in particular Marquis Motorhomes who really pulled out all the stops for us and provided us with 2 support vehicles”. On the 12th July the 3K4K team of nine cyclists, from Bishops Waltham set off on an epic 1400 mile bike ride in order to complete the three peaks challenge. Cycling from Bishops Waltham the 3K4K team headed north to Snowdon, Scafell Pike and Ben Nevis after which they turned their bikes south and headed home. Their trials and tribulations can be found on www.3klimbs4kids.org or http://www. facebook.com/#!/3Klimbs4Kids If you would like to help the team with their fundraising donations, please visit (for Leukaemia Busters): http:// www.justgiving.com/3k4k and (for The Piam Brown Ward): http://www.justgiving.com/3K4K-Cycle-Ride .

Busy Bees welcome local MP to Open Day The sun shone on Busy Bees pre school as staff and children welcomed Mike Thornton MP to its open day in July. The MP for Eastleigh chatted to staff and parents about the much loved pre school and even joined in some fun activities with the children. The Open Day gave visitors a chance to experience a typical Busy Bees session and really get to know the pre school by talking to staff and parents. There were a huge range of activities for children to enjoy including the enclosed outside area where the trikes and the sand and water tables were extremely popular. Indoors, children enjoyed painting at the easels, drawing and playing with modelling clay, dressing up and cooking in the toy kitchen and playing with the large dolls house. Staff also opened the ‘Snack Bar’ where the children tucked into a healthy snack of banana, apple and a biscuit. Busy Bees Supervisor Vanessa Sketcher said: “It was a great oportunity for prospective parents and their children to get to know our lovely pre school better and several have put their names down to start next year which is wonderful news.” Mike Thornton MP said: “I was very impressed with the Busy Bees, they have such a range of fun activities on offer for children and parents, and you could see how much the kids were enjoying the chance to play, socialise, learn and let their creativity run wild on the paint boards, in the sand pit and in the reading corner. Some of the painting skills on display were truly stunning, Horton Heath has some budding Da Vincis on its hands I think! “The pre-school is offering the community of Horton Heath and Fair Oak a wonderful service with the great facilities, and the dedication and friendliness of the staff really shone through. Preparing children for the next step to Infants School is important, and Busy Bees clearly fits the bill, providing a fun, accessible and safe environment five days a week.” Busy Bees is located in the Horton Heath Community Centre and is open Monday to Friday for children from 2 years 9 months until they start infant school. For further information please pop in to Busy Bees or call 07582292048.

MR MENZ NEEDS YO U R H E L P! Mr Menz celebrates its eighth Birthday this year. Kim and the Mr Menz staff are well known for their charity work in the past, raising £5,000 for Cancer Research by taking part in the Race For Life. This wouldn’t have been possible without the loyal support of their customers. This year, Kim has adopted a German Shepherd from Fareham based charity German Shepherd Rescue, and after getting to know the people who run the charity, has decided to do some fundraising for them. She started this by doing a car boot sale, with all proceeds going to the charity. With the help of her customers, who donated all sorts of items, she managed to raise £550. This is how you can help: If you have any unwanted sell-able items, please donate them by dropping them into Mr Menz during opening hours. Proceeds from the next car boot sale will be split between Cancer Research and German Shepherd Rescue. Kim is also taking part in the Great South Run in October, once again raising money for Cancer Research. If anyone would like to sponsor her there is a sponsorship form at the salon, which she is hoping to fill up. She would like to thank everyone for their continuing support.

Patchwork Day Nursery and Pre School, based at Perins School, celebrated its 20th Birthday with a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party at the popular Alresford nursery. In December last year the Patchwork team launched a campaign to trace children who had attended the facility over the years, along with their parents and past staff, to attend a reunion party. “The party was fantastic! We were thrilled with the turn out and it was brilliant to see so many familiar faces to celebrate this important occasion with us,” commented Nursery Manager Nicola Baxter. The party included an afternoon tea with a raffle, games and entertainment, catering for all ages. Patchwork parent Anna Nicolaou commented, “It was such

CRY put on first fashion show catwalk, which he did! CRY would like to say a massive thank you to all their partners – Wildern School and the D@rt Centre, sponsors – ‘That’s Original’ and auctioneer, as well as the Deputy Mayor of Eastleigh and Matt Le Tissier for taking the time to come and support the evening. They would also like to thank all the children, designers, models, and volunteers who spent many months working together to put on this show. A big thank you to Lindsay Snuggs, their Events Officer, for all her hard work, and also for being a fantastic host on the evening alongside her co-host, Gaz Simms. And finally thank you to their supporters who came on the night and raised £1,500 towards the Hosanna Orphanage in Myanmar and to their photographer Phil Green, whose photos you can now view online at www.excipio.me For more information about Care and Relief for the Young (CRY) children’s charity, please visit WWW.CRY.ORG.UK or pop into one of their local charity shops in Eastleigh, Hedge End and Woolston.

On Thursday 4 July, CRY put on its first Fashion Show. The aim of the evening was to raise funds for the Hosanna Orphanage in Myanmar, to provide food, water, shelter, healthcare and education to over 30 children. The Fashion Show was a little different to what you might expect. It was all about ‘upcycling’ – a new term being used in many creative circles today. Basically the idea is to take second hand unwanted goods and redesign them to create something new and ‘in style’. It started off with furniture, setting off the ‘shabby chic’ trend, so CRY decided to try it with clothing. CRY has charity shops in the South of England, so what better way than to combine this valuable resource with a fun and innovative fundraising evening. A team of designers hand-picked donated items from their charity shops, up to the value of £15 and then spent a few months reworking these pieces of clothing to create trendy new outfits. But it didn’t stop there. Children from Wildern School Textile Club also got involved by creating their own ‘upcycled’ outfits, using all sorts of fun products to create their looks. CRY was able to auction some of the outfits at the end of the evening. Special guests were the Deputy Mayor of Eastleigh Tony Noyce and his wife Janice, along with former Southampton football player Matt Le Tissier and his his wife Angela. Matt was a good sport when he was put on the spot by being asked to later ‘strut his stuff’ down the

Young spor ting hero announced in Locks Heath Tom Murley, was presented with the Locks Heath ‘2013 Young Sporting Hero’ Award for his outstanding achievement in sport. The award was handed over on 15th August 2013 at Locks Heath Shopping Village by Ian Goodridge, Centre manager. Tom suffers from the condition cerebral palsy, which has affects all four of his limbs, meaning he cannot walk and relies on a wheelchair to get around. However, Tom is a huge lover of sports and before he became wheelchair bound he proved everyone wrong. Tom’s parents were always told he would never walk or swim; however Tom not only gained a swimming certificate, but started to walk at the age of four. Tom also competed in his school’s Sports Day and always managed to get the crowd off their feet! Unbelievably Tom learnt how to ski and even competed in races, regardless of him hardly being able to walk. Even though Tom now has to use a wheelchair, he is an inspiration to everyone to loves sport. He has never given up on his love for sport and has now discovered wheelchair basketball, which his coaches say he has a natural talent for. After having received his award Tom said: “I am honoured to receive this award, because sport is so important to me. I hope others in the same position as me will start to get involved in sports because there really is something for everyone. Ellis Murly, who nominated his twin brother Tom, commented: “He is incredibly determined and doesn’t let his disability get in his way. He is an excellent role model for anyone who participates (or wants to participate) in sport, and I am very proud of him. He deals with so many challenges in his daily life that would be unthinkable to most of us. He is an inspiration to both able-bodied and disabled people, and he gains the respect and admiration from anyone who meets him.” Ian Goodridge, Centre Manager for Locks Heath Shopping Village, commented: “There were many incredible individuals nominated for this award but it was Tom’s dedication to overcome the seemingly impossible that really shone for us.”

Southampton Airport team raise over £2,000 for Sophie’s Appeal Southampton Airport team raise over £2,400 for Sophie’s Appeal by climbing three mountains in a day. A team from Southampton Airport has raised over £2,400 by scaling the three highest mountains in the UK, in less than 24 hours. The group, dubbed ‘The Misfits’, hatched a plan to raise as much money as possible for Sophie’s Appeal, by pushing themselves to their limit completing the Three Peaks Challenge. Six months of planning followed with the team regularly training locally at Butser Hill and St Catherine’s Hill. The teams first ever attempt at the challenge saw them climb Ben Nevis (4,406ft) in Scotland, Snowdon (3,560ft) in Wales and Scafell Pike (3,206ft) in England in just 23 hours 59 minutes. This resulted in a Bronze Award from the Three Peaks Challenge organisers. The group raised over £1,200, which was then kindly match funded by their employer’s charity committee, The Southampton Airport Community Fund. Sophie’s Appeal is a local charity particularly supported by airport staff as Sophie’s father, Mike Barringer, works there. Many staff knew Sophie and have been inspired by the achievements of the charity since it began in 2003. Mike helped the group with their adventure by driving the 500 miles between the mountains. He said: “The support and fundraising achievements by my colleagues has just been overwhelming. These crazy people have done an absolutely amazing thing, all to help sick children and their families with much needed support. I’d like to thank them from the bottom of my heart.”

HINTS TO HELP SOLVE A CROSS FIGURE PUZZLE Essential equipment: Pencil and eraser. Supply of scrap paper. Handy but not essential: Calculator. List of squares roots (from 10 to 316). Hints: The cross figure puzzle is constructed like any conventional cross-word puzzle, except that all the answers are the figures from 1 to 0. No answer starts with zero, some end in zero. There are no fractions or decimal points. A palindrome reads the same from either end. Any number that is a double obviously ends in 2, 4, 6, 8 or zero. Similarly any number that is a half of another number can end in any number, whilst the original number must be even. Numbers squared end in 1, 4, 5, 6, 9 and 0. A good place to start is to run through all the clues, entering even and squared numbers as appropriate (in pencil). Where the answer is an addition or multiplication of two or more other numbers, investigate the largest and smallest possible answers. Where some of the figures inside a squared number have been established, some of the possibilities for the square root can be found by inspection and elimination using a list of square roots. Basically, once some of the answers are calculated, just keep working round. Remember to work backwards. (If A+B=C. then A=C-B).

* The Completed Cross Figure Puzzle will be revealed next month

FINANCIAL & LEGAL SERVICES

Moore McCusker Associates Over a million families will lose child benefit in 2013 with half a million having to fill out a self-assessment tax form each year to continue receiving the benefit. Many will also be asked to pay back the benefit by way of an income tax charge. If one parent has income of over £50,000 a year, the family will receive less child benefit. Income includes everything that would normally be declared for tax purposes. It is still important to complete claims for any new children, even if parents don’t actually get any child benefit. For each week you are entitled to the cash, you could qualify for National Insurance credits which can help to protect future entitlement to the state pension. The parent with the highest income will be liable to the charge and will have to complete and submit the tax return. If the tax return is not submitted on time they will receive a £100 late filing penalty. Taxpayers who do not complete a tax return because all their income is taxed at source, will now have to fill out a self-assessment form. HMRC has not written to all those are affected to explain what to do. If they already fill out a self-assessment form, they will need to include the information relating to child benefit in their tax returns for 2012/13 and beyond. Moore McCusker of Moore McCusker Associates says that, “This is a complicated system which is resulting in confusion and resentment among taxpayers.”

He advises that taxpayers who find themselves with a tax return to complete for the first time should deal with it immediately. “There is nothing to gain by delaying”. They should have received most of the information necessary by 19 May. Taxpayers with additional tax to pay should aim to have their tax return as soon as possible so that they can budget for the tax liability due by 31 January 2014. Moore recommends taxpayers to, “Keep your papers in order in a folder to enable you to prepare your tax return”. In his experience, as filing deadlines approach, tax papers go missing – so start prepping early. “If you wish to use a tax adviser, remember that not all accountants are tax advisers. The Chartered Institute of Taxation provide a search facility at www.tax.org.uk/about_the_ciot/find-a-cta “Of course, if a husband and wife have different incomes with one earning £60,000 and the other £35,000, they may wish to transfer income earning assets between trhem so that the lower earner receives more income thus reducing the higher earner’s income to less than £60,000 Warsash Accountants and preserving the child Year End Accounts benefit claim”. • PAYE Moore McCusker can be • Bookkeeping contacted on moore@ • VAT mooretax.co.uk or by calling 01489 247047 0844 244 8330
