AN ARTISTIC EXPEDITION TO THE NATIONAL GALLERY
E
SOL students went on a day trip to the National Art Gallery at Trafalgar Square travelling by the London underground from Tottenham Hale to Leicester Square. They then used a map to find directions to the gallery from the station. The students took in the wonderful sights and sounds of Trafalgar Square as a host of artists displayed their talents to the public. Once inside the National Art Gallery the students were given a treasure hunting task where they had to locate the paintings on their sheets and fill in some information about it eg. who painted it, which year etc. “I found the task challenging and it was fun to locate the paintings and read the information cards which often we skip,” says Mete. “I travelled to central London by tube for the first time. It was a wonderful experience,” says Asha. “Trafalgar square was buzzing with tourists. Some people had painted their face and body and stood like statues. Some were performing tricks on their bicycles while some played music or drew paintings,” says Shrpesa.

Learning In the Real World
R
eading is actively encouraged by ESOL tutors who embed new books and newspaper articles into ESOL curriculum during classroom learning and also actively promote the use of local libraries to expand the knowledge of grammar and vocabulary. Students are recommended bi-lingual story books and simple grammar books for ESOL learners. A trip to the local library in Edmonton helped students register themselves and get an orientation of the resources available at the library and online that they can access to improve their learning and assimilation in UK society.

I am now planning to study tourism but will take some ESOL classes with it to improve my English skills. I am applying at colleges to do this combined study. liked Five E more than I expected to. The people and the teachers I met with where just phenomenal people. I feel more confident, and now feel like I can walk into an interview knowing what i’m going to talk about and what types of question might come up. My class mates, I was put with to study, were fun and exciting people to work with. Our teacher made the activities fun , with brain teasers and word play which added more excitement and talking points, but overall I had fun while I learned and earned a qualification

Through this job fair 5E were able to recruit 45 16-24 year old individuals for the Skills Boost Enfield project, of which 70% have found sustainable work and are now off benefits as a result.

I am glad that I walked into 5E Ltd
I
started my first course at Fivee Limited, I was not sure where what I wanted to do? Waiting at the reception area not even know what course I should start with. The centre manager (Mr Amit Desai) walks by and asks me “How can I help you?” and answering that question changed my life. I spoke to the course advisor and before doubting myself I was in a Level 2 course, the trainers I worked with were passing on their knowledge and I grabbed the opportunity to learn and my confidence started to build in terms of leading to fixing and repairing PCs and servers. Successfully completed my Level2 qualification. Mr Amit’s words and mentorship gave me the courage and confidence to challenge myself by taking on the Level 3 & 4 course (best decision I ever made) and I am proud to say that I have achieved certifications that has international recognition (MCSA, CCNA, VCP, MCSE, Vcap, Checkpoint, CCNP, Private Cloud, ITILv3) in addition important procedures and process how to manage projects, improve myself, customer services and many more. I worked really hard towards achieving these qualification by attending extra sessions, early morning and late evenings, using the Fivee’s fully equipped labs was assuring and the library facilities at Fiveegave me the best reading resources possible. Enough about me, I would like to praise and thank all the trainers who have taught me, the skills and knowledge that they passed on is my foundation to success Finally I would like to thank Mr Amit who has pushed me to this achievement and success, also a BIG thank you to the management to keep an institute (Fivee) in operation for people who wish to achieve in life. Job that works around my children’s schedule!
A
s a single mother with 3 children and being unemployed for over a year, I never thought that I would ever find a job that would accommodate the schedule of my school children or even consider the length of time that I have been out of work for. I was referred to 5E not knowing what to expect, but that all changed when I met my Advisor Terry. He outlined his desire to get me back into work and refused to consider the length of time I had been unemployed. He fixed up my CV, put me on employability courses which improved my confidence and helped me with my job search. As a result of that hard work, I was put forward for an interview with CO-OP and was offered a job as a sales assistant doing 16 hours a week. My colleagues are great and I am enjoying every single minute of it. A little push sent me a long way
“I
stopped working many years ago as I was physically ill and needed to visit the hospital frequently—at least 3 times a week for treatment. After my health improved, the task of having to live a normal life by taking responsibility of my own future now felt daunting. I first enrolled on some short courses and took up voluntary work which at least helped me get out of my front door. I then started searching for a new job. At first this proved difficult (but not impossible) as I had no previous experience whatsoever but I eventually found a job. I now work as a support worker for a housing association. I just want to thank my adviser Ann for pointing to me some of my positive qualities and giving me a little push when I needed it, which helped me realise that I do have some usefulness in the world of work. Also thank you 5E and other members of staff who in other valuable ways helped me in my journey to find work.”

Since arriving I have achieved a degree in Public Relations at London Metropolitan University which I finished in June 2010 gaining a 2:1 as a result. Afterwards, I continued with my masters degree in Corporate Social Responsibility. The first thing I noticed when I came to Maximus was a banner saying ‘Your Journey Starts here.’ Since the start of my journey, I have received a great deal of support through my personal adviser Maria Verde who kept me motivated for the last two years. Maria has a warm welcoming persona and was always tremendously helpful and available to give guidance through my times of struggle. Through her excellent motivational skills, I was able to build my repertoire of working experiences through volunteering and professional experience. I have been working within the African charity sector as a Project Administrator for the ‘Our Shared Heritage’ project at IROKO Theatre Company for over a year. In addition, I have been in a role of a Church Administrator at Church of the Farm on the Broadwater Farm estate in Tottenham for the last eight months. I am still on my way to find full– time employment but I know one day I will look back on it and say “What a journey—But I made it!”

y adviser Maria showed me passion, care and is full of knowledge and experience. Being with her I felt comfort, joy and happiness as she listened to my concerns. She helped me deal with my health problems positively as I have been on ESA for many years and was concerned working full-time. However she advised me of the benefits of working part-time and to continue with working on my therapy oils which I have been doing for many years at home and never thought of making it into a business. The idea of working self employed part-time really interested me and she made me feel great about myself and showed all her support and care. I have now signed off as a self-employed Herbalist & Aromatherapy Specialist. She also discussed

I now do my therapy treatments at the weekends. She is a wonderful person to work with and I feel grateful and privileged to know her.

If I got into WP sooner, I would have found a job sooner!
“B
efore entering the work programme, I had no knowledge of what it entailed. I realised straight away that my adviser, Selina was more keen to help me. She listened to me and advised me accordingly. She consistently motivated me to do better and strive for excellence, even when I felt like settling she always reminded me of my initial goals. While on the program I did my CSCS and SIA. My first job was working in a school where I worked part-time but I always wanted to return to full time work. Selina never stopped believing that I could get the job I always wanted. One day I called my the company I used to work for and they offered me work. I was so happy. As Selina always told me to stay positive, I couldn’t wait to tell her the news. Her face, when i told her, just made my day! I appreciate all the help given by the advisers, as my time on the work programme was certainly pleasant and useful. I should have been sent to the work programme straight away when I first signed on. I would have been in work sooner!”

I was taught everything about finding employment
“S
elina has been very understanding and patient with me throughout the time I have been on the work programme. I have completed courses in helping me get back to employment. They involved CV writing workshops, interview skills workshops and also a Level 2 in Childcare. Selina helped me with my CV. She also guided me on how to speak in an interview, how to fill application forms, what clothes to wear for an interview and how to conduct myself. She taught me a lot and this helped me find employment as a care assistant. I am grateful to her for where I am today.”

I can come to my 5E family when I need support
“I
am 19 years old. I was unemployed for a year after leaving sixth form. I had no motivation towards looking for job opportunities because I lacked confidence. I was referred to 5E by my Work Coach at Job Centre Plus who felt that I would benefit from Skills Boost. Skills Boost helped me in a way like no one else has before. I was able to boost my confidence, learn interview techniques and produce an appropriate detailed CV. I liked the way my Tutors and mentors connected with me and supported me I now see them as another family because I can come to them when I need support. I enjoyed Skills Boost because I was able to meet new people and make new friends who were similar to me. My tutors and mentors supported me gaining a work placement with B&M which I am currently still at. With my work placement I am gaining skills like team working and customer service. Through this work placement I have been able to secure a job with B&M as soon as my work placement is finished and its all thanks to Terence, Denise and Ibsa for their support and guidance. I have been able to gain a lot of knowledge, motivation and confidence in myself and I would not have been able to do it without 5E so I would like to say a huge Thank You!

My tutor, Andre was a really big help as he helped all of us through different things and knowing how to change and perfect our CV’s.
