April 29th Blizzard Race

Super Late Models to Go 125 Laps The early racing action has been “Fast and Furious” so far in 2016 at Five Flags Speedway and I don’t see the pace slowing any time soon. The Allen Turner Hyundai Pro Late Model twin 50’s back on April 15th turned out to be a pair of barn burners as the racers treated the fans to some great racing action in both events. Derek Thorn and Bret Holmes took home the win in their respective races but neither win came easy. For the first time in 2016 the Deep South Crane Rentals Super Late Models will fill the pits and race for 125 laps in the Universal Fabricators 125. This will be the first of four Blizzard Series races for this year and points will count toward both the Southern Super Series and the Blizzard Series.

Oklahoma’s Donnie Wilson has been on the hot streak so far this year and is coming off two wins in his last trip to Nashville. He expects to be in position to take home his first ever win at America’s Favorite Home Track. To do so he will have to out run some stiff competition such as David Rogers, Bubba Pollard, Cole Anderson and a host of others. If it’s anything like what we’ve seen so far this year at Cordell Georgia, Opp Alabama and Nashville Tennessee, I would suggest to our fans that they sit down, buckle up and get ready for some good ole fast paced, door slammin, flat out southern style Super Late Model racing at its best. Joining the Super Late Models are the Pro Trucks (extended to 40 laps), Sportsman & Bombers. I hope everyone enjoys tonight and know you can look forward to some great racing this year.

A Dif’rent Arrangement

By Chuck Corder Good things come to those who wait. Even if waiting is the hardest part. These words are usually saved for motivational posters and cheesy song lyrics. But, sometimes, the cliché becomes the reality. It certainly did for Ryan Luza. After winning the Allen Turner Hyundai Pro Late Model track championship last season at Five Flags Speedway, the 19-year-old Texan driver hoped the title would springboard him into a Super Late Model ride. But, for months, crickets was all he heard. “We knew we needed to move up, but there weren’t any opportunities,” the college sophomore said. “Nothing seemed to come together.”As the calendar turned to 2016, Luza and his family-based team began making plans for another PLM season. That is until February when two of Luza’s own crew members and longtime family friends stepped up to the plate. Thanks to some timely sponsorship, Luza has his SLM team. “I’m ready. I’m really excited,” Luza said. “I’ve been counting down the days since I knew we were going to be able to do this. I haven’t even really sat in a Super Late Model before. So I’m gonna have to learn as much as I can in a little amount of time.” (Read the rest of Chuck’s story on our web page).

Could Byron be the future of stock-car racing? He, of course, hopes so. With close ties to NASCAR superstars, a K&N Pro Series East championship already under his belt and now a Camping World Trucks Series rookie season in full swing, the 18-year-old driver certainly has a blossoming resume fitting of a young gun. But, perhaps, the question can be better framed by massaging it: Could William Byron’s story be the future of stock-car racing? The Charlotte Country Day School senior eschewed the traditional path that most young drivers follow. Forever a fan of the sport since age 6, Byron was an “iRacer” before he hopped behind the wheel of actual car. He competed online against other racing enthusiasts, some of which are drivers, at iRacing.com, a subscriptionbased simulation service for computers. Five Flags Speedway fans will judge for themselves tonight. (Read the rest of Chuck’s story on our web site).
