Jo and Jones vs Veteran Jr. Niedecken With the final checkered flag in sight for the 2014 regular racing season here at Five Flags Speedway, look for tonight’s racing action to be fierce in three of the four divisions that will be spread throughout the pit area. You might ask “Why any different from any other night?” The answer is simple. Less than a hand full of races are left on the regular season calendar and the final checkered flag is in sight for the championship title that will go to only one driver in each division. Only 18 points separate the top three in the Allen Turner Hyundai Pro Late Model Division. Johanna Long leads over Garrett Jones and Wayne Niedecken Jr. After tonight it will then be decided on Saturday night, September 27th at the “Whataburger Night of Champions” race. The three of them know it’s down to tonight and September 27th, when a Champion will be crowned.
They should also expect plenty of competition from a large field of out of towner’s who will be on hand for their last “Tune up” before the Night of Champions 100 lap event. Some of the driver’s rumored to be here are R.S. Senter (Georgia), Kurt Jett (Jacksonville, Fl), Ryan Luza (Texas) and no telling who else! The points spread is also tight in the Beef O’Brady’s Sportsman division as Shanna Ard leads Brannon Fowler by a mere 2 points!! Wow, to say taking it down to the wire between two highly competitive driver’s is an understatement. You might also be wondering about the Butler U Pull It Bombers, and if this class is any different in the points standings. Well, Michael Nelson has been on a roll the last few races and has managed to close within 17 points of leader Robert Balkum.
To top all this off we will also see the return of the Vintage Cars for the second time this year. We all will agree that these old Coupes and Sedans will bring back old memories and a ton of excitement. Who knows who our 2014 champions will be in any of the divisions? Adding to the excitement, the next race event on Sept 5th will be double features for Bombers, Sportsmen, Pro Trucks and Super Stocks. Full points awarded for each leg of the twin features. Hold on to tonight’s ticket. It is good for free admission Saturday and Sunday afternoon at the annual Home Expo at the Bay Center downtown. It’s a 5 dollar saving for each ticket. Until next time….We’ll see you at the races….and make sure you bring a friend.

By Chuck Corder Vintage Cars Roar Back to 5 Flags as Local Divisions Jockey for Points What can Five Flags Speedway do for an encore? That’s a sensible question to ask after a massive crowd was rewarded earlier this month with the track’s annual editions of the Demolition Derby and Faster Pastor feature. We’re still on cloud nine after watching an unthinkable field of 18 Demolition Derby clunkers decimate each other and Pastor Wes Alvarez of My Father’s Vineyard spinning across the finish line and still somehow topping three other area clergymen 2 weeks ago. On the heels of that whirlwind night, the famed half-mile oval is sure to create a few more memories tonight when the Southern Vintage Racing Association turns back the clock.
The old-bodied, 1934 Ford and Chevy coupes and sedans return for the second time this year, hoping for its own entertaining encore, following a great show in June. But the vintage cars aren’t the only showcase worth the price of admission. With points battles raging through the pits, storylines abound for the three local classes. Tonight marks the next round of doublefeature racing for the Allen Turner Pro Late Models, and hometown girl Johanna Long hopes to protect her slim, 11-point lead over defending track champion Garrett Jones. With only three features remaining after this week, the Beef “O” Brady’s Sportsman and Butler U-Pull-It Bombers figure to battle to the season’s final checkered flag.

What do fathers want for their sons? A thousand scholars and therapists could argue their opinions until they’re blue in the face. But above most shrewd assumptions is the idea of becoming a father, lucky enough to have your son carry on the family legacy. Twenty-one-year-old Nathaniel — “Thumper” to stranger or friend — Grice is making his life’s current mission to do just that for his father, Roger — “Scooter” to stranger or friend — Grice. Tonight the Grice men will have a shot at track history when their 1934 Ford sedans compete in the Southern Vintage Racing Assoc. 20-lap feature. Scooter has raced Modifieds off and on for the last 20 years. “Nothing would make me happier than if me and my dad could finish first and second,” Thumper Grice said. “That’d be awesome. I don’t wanna run second to my dad, but if I can’t win, I sure would love to be right behind him.” Thumper made his old man proud earlier this summer in June when he drove Scooter’s No. 83 to a runner’s-up finish during the Association’s first appearance of 2014. An emotional Thumper won the hearts of many that Friday night in Victory Lane. He was overcome with joy that the Grice name had once again earned a podium finish at the famed half-mile oval. --Read more on our web site.

There’s little that’s subtle about Aleck Alford. From the cowboy hat to his 6-foot, 280-pound frame, the 27 year old former Pace High School football star stands out from the crowd. Almost as much as the 1932 two-door Chevy coupe Alford drives whenever the Southern Vintage Racing Association convenes. Bearing the No. 7 — a number, traditionally, associated with good fortunes — dressed with a lucky, lime-green trim and sporting a horseshoe on the front end, a casual observer might think Alford has yet to lose this season. A casual observer could not be more wrong. From a scorched hand, courtesy of a radiator cap, to an emergency appendectomy to his rear-end being a magnet for opponents, Alford is desperate to break the pattern of misfortune. “If we didn’t have bad luck, I guarantee you, we’d have none,” said Alford, who has already gone through four rear ends in 2014. The mechanic/technician by day, Alford hopes to adjust his luck tonight. Alford, running his first full season with the Southern Vintage Racing Association, is eager to make his driving debut at the famed half-mile asphalt oval.
