Closer Look at 2 Drivers; Marine Battey and Champ Spears By Chuck Corder
It’s quite a day for Casey Battey. After 8½ years that included two overseas deployments and a heroic rescue effort, Sgt. Battey can honorably walk away from the U.S. Marine Corps. Tonight, he will get his first taste of asphalt racing as part of the Southern Vintage Racing Association exhibition race at Five Flags Speedway. For Battey, it promises to be a bittersweet day of celebration, reflection and, hopefully, a gentle initiation to Pensacola’s high-banked oval. “I haven’t gotten a clue,” Battey said of what he is anticipating come,. “I know asphalt is less forgiving, but I’ve never raced it before.” A native of Menifee, Calif., a town north of San Diego, Battey’s father competed in Baja events throughout California’s deserts. Battey was still in diapers when his old man put him on a dirt bike. “Our family vacations were going out to the desert for four or five days and riding dirt bikes,” said Battey, who raced motocross as a kid before eventually following in his father Baja footsteps once in high school. Ben Spears’ ties to Five Flags aren’t unlike most drivers. Thirty years ago, his father was one heck of a hotshoe. At 12, he competed in the annual kids bicycle races. B u t unlike most drivers that eventually chase checkered and track championships, Spears never had an opportunity to mold his childhood dreams into a reality. That is until tonight when the 35 year old will lead a field of openwheeled coupes and trucks for a special exhibition feature. “I’m excited to get out there and make some laps,” said Spears, who won the inaugural SVRA championship this year. “It has always been a dream of mine to get out there. It’s a dream come true just to be on the track with all the legends that I’ve seen out there. It’s hallowed ground for racers.” In the late 1980s and into the early ’90s, his family leased the track. “It’s always been a part of my life,” he said. “I’ve sold popcorn, peanuts, put up light poles in the infield, painted the walls — you name it.” Read all of Chuck’s story on the web: www. fiveflagsspeedway.com
