New Season Starts On New Tires

I

t sure doesn’t seem like almost four months ago we closed out the 2010 season with the most thrilling Snowball Derby to date. A hometown driver, a “GIRL”, a teenager, Johanna Long broke all kinds of records by winning the biggest independent short track race in America. And hats off to the staff here at Five Flags Speedway for all the National Awards won over the winter. By the way; National Speed Sport News voted the 43rd annual Snowball Derby as “The Best Annual Short Track Event of the Year”. Who would ever think the 2010 season could be topped?

Oklahoma’s Donny Wilson. He is coming off of second place finishes in the Snowball Derby and the Rattler 250 in Opp, Al. He’s overdue. Chase Elliott last year’s Series winner is at a NASCAR event this weekend. Look out for Johanna.

e begin our season as the Nation and the US Navy celebrates 100 years of aviation in Pensacola. Get ready because 2011 looks to be even better as some tweaks and adjustments have been made. Our goal is to speed up the program and have you home earlier. We welcome Buddy’s Home Furnishings as the Blizzard Series sponsor for the year.

lso new on the schedule this year are five 100 lap Pro Late Model races which should bring the car count up, and make for some good racing for the Pro’s. Gone is the 40 lap PLM feature.

ew Hoosiers for both SLM and PLM start tonight, designed to go the 100 lap distance. Why we say “Stock Car Racing”...see back page

y witnessing the car count at the first two Super and Pro Late Model events at Lanier Raceway (Ga) and South Alabama Speedway (Al) it certainly appears that racing is alive and healthy for 2011. We expect a strong field of cars tonight with drivers such as Chris Davidson, Augie Grill, Bubba Pollard and Wayne Niedecken. If I had to bet on a winner right now, I would have to go with DW...

C

ongratulations to NASCAR driver Rick Crawford, past Snowball Derby Champion, who is taking over active management of Mobile International Speedway.

n closing, check out our new website. Tune in to “In The Groove” on BLAB-TV as Tim and I keep you updated on all the scoop. BTW, does anyone remember the Demolition Derby? Next time, bring a friend!!

A new building to house the speedway office is under construction next to the main ticket gate. It’s part of a long range plan to upgrade speedway operations. Last year we completed installation of a sewer line from the pit and office area. We hope to move in by July 1st. A $50 gift card is given to the first driver each nite whose car is hauled off on Fletcher’s Rollback

America’s Best Short Track Race is The Snowball Derby Wow! What an honor and surprise to receive this award. It was presented to General Manager Tim Bryant during Daytona Speedweek at the annual track promoters meeting by the prestigious Speed Sport News magazine. Thank You.

We are asked on occasion, “How can I get more involved with motor sports here at 5 Flags”? There are several ways. Sponsor a car, buy the driver tires, or help in other ways. See the driver after the races in the pits. We also offer event and series sponsorships. Events like Fireworks Night, Media Night, Kid’s Bicycle Races, Pole Winners, Modified Series, Snowball Derby etc. Sponsorships can include a party on the Turn 4 Speed Deck for your employees and customers. Just call the office MondayFriday 9-5. Ad space is available on the pit wall, the back straightaway, and even here in the free newsletter we give out at each race. Call the office Mon-Fri 944-8400.
