Everyone can pick a song at any given time and relate it to the way things are going for them at the moment. For D. J. Vanderley (Pro Late Model), and Mike Goraum (Bomber) it would have to be the old Jerry Reed song “When You’re Hot, You’re Hot”. Vanderley has won every Pro Late Model feature to date for 2010 at Five Flags Speedway, and on the weekend of April 16 & 17 he made it back to back wins, as he also won at Mobile International Speedway. After rolling a 6 at Pensacola and a 5 at Mobile (for the invert of starting positions) he showed a lot of patience working his way through the field and come up with “Snake Eyes” at the end of both nights. Question is, can he three-peat this week? Goraum on the other hand is almost perfect for 2010. He won on March 19 and again on March 26. A mechanical problem kept him away from victory lane on April 9 but he returned on the 16th to make it three out of four feature wins. Even though both Vanderley and Goraum have great starts this season, doesn’t mean they can let up. They are leading the points in their respective divisions but by a slim margin. See back page. Usually when a driver tends to dominate his class the fans start to “Boo” them. I’ve not heard that towards these two, and that’s perfectly ok because they have paid their dues and both of them are really great individuals.
Photo Courtesy of Darrell Bailey I bet you thought I forgot about Steve Buttrick! Every Sportsmem driver knows who he is after the last two feature races. I’ve watched this guy race at Southern Raceway to know it was only a matter of time before he rose to the top. Before I turn out the lights on the drivers in this article, I want to say “Thank God” that Steve Britt survived a horrifying crash on April 17th at Mobile International Speedway. Steve had a vicious impact into the wall at one of the worst angles you could possibly have. He escaped with several bruises, but overall is going to be ok. The Pensacola racing community and the 5 Flags racing family here, send out condolences to the family of Roxann Dawson, who passed away this past weekend. Roxann and Tom started the Snowball Derby 43 years ago. Tonight we welcome STRIDE the community-based mentoring program (Students Taking Responsibility In Developing Excellence). It targets at-risk kids to improve academics, behavior and self image. They are seeing motorsports for the first time in their lives. Welcome to the youth group from The Campus Church at Pensacola Christian College. Until next time, I’ll “See ya at the Races”. -Steve Stokes.
