“Where Racers Begin”
Could it be true? Jay Jay Day is considering slowing down from racing full time at the end of this season? Could it be true? Day easing off the throttle during Pro Trucks features has improved his results? It might seem hard to believe for a driver who used to throw caution to the wind and get to the front by any means necessary. But spend a few minutes talking with the 24-year-old Day, and you’ll quickly discover the Theodore, Ala., native has matured from the driver he was several years ago when he raced the Butler U-Pull-It Bombers wide open every single lap. “I’ve kinda slacked up and slowed myself down,” Day said. “By doing that, I’ve gotten a lot faster. My tires are lasting the whole race. It’s showing up in the points.” Indeed Day’s new style has paid dividends early this season. As the Pro Trucks return, Day — a Pro Trucks feature winner this year — trails series leader Okie Mason by five points in what Day is calling his last year to battle for a points championship. Married with daughter Addison, now 4, and wife Shelby expecting the couple’s first boy this fall, Day will scale back his racing schedule when 2015 arrives.
“This’ll be my last year to run for points,” he admitted. “If we could get (the track championship) at Five Flags, that’d be incredible. After winning the championship in Mobile last year, and coming so close at Five Flags — and now I’m leading it — I wanna do my best to try and win it. “I’d like to win the Gulf Coast (title between Pensacola and Mobile). It’d be amazing to end the season like that.” That’s why Day is trying to go out with a bang in 2014. He hopes his good fortunes continue tonight. It certainly is a new Day from the one fans and rival drivers had grown accustomed to when he was dominating Bombers features between Pensacola and Mobile a few seasons back. Day was a brash personality who enjoyed mixing it up outside of the car just as much as he did when he was in the seat. For that reason alone, he became a driver you couldn’t take your eyes off of. These days, Day has trashed the bravado in favor of being a doting father to little Addison — who, by the way, wants nothing to do with racing. -(Read the rest of Chuck’s story on our web site.)
