Introduction

Pufferfish are amazing critters. Pufferfish are cute but they are also very deadly .They are the 2nd most poisonous creature on Earth. They will inject poison into any creature that ate them or harmed them.

DID YOU KNOW?

Body

This diagram shows you how a pufferfish puffs up.

Some pufferfish have no scales at all. They only have rough skin or spicks.

Pufferfish have a unique body. Their bodies are the shape of a tube. They are 1 inch to 2 feet long. Pufferfish don’t have scales. Their skin is thick and rough. Some species have spines on the skin. Pufferfish are poor swimmers so they cannot escape danger quickly. Their body helps them survive. The pufferfish swallow air or water to make them puff up about, 10 times their own size. This way it will make it harder for the predator to swallow them. Scientists say pufferfish developed this method themselves. Pufferfish are amazing creatures.

Toxin

Most pufferfish have toxin in their bodies. Some Pufferfish are brightly colored. This tells how much toxin is in a pufferfish. The toxin pufferfish produce are called tordotoxin. Toxin is not located in all parts of the fish. One pufferfish contains enough toxin to kill 30 adult men. Pufferfish are amazing creatures but also very deadly.

This puffer is very colorful. It has a lot of toxin.

Mating Pufferfish have a unique way of Mating. The male pufferfish flaps their tale as they swim along the sea floor, creating a magnificent circle (see side). The male makes this circle to attract their mate. The male will lead the female to shallow waters, so she can lay her eggs. After the progress they will swim back to the deep ends of the ocean. A pufferfish mate circle.

Young

Baby pufferfish ( it’s tail is still clear so you can’t see it fully)

A pufferfish’s young are inserting .The pufferfish’s egg is extremely light. It will float on the waters surface. In a weeks time they will hatch into a small and clear baby pufferfish. When they first hatch, the baby pufferfish’s fry are not fully developed so the baby pufferfish will grow a hard shell to protect them-self.Then after the fry is fully developed, the hard shell will break off, so the baby pufferfish can develop its tail and fins. When its tale and fins are developed, it will start to gain opacity. When you can fully see the baby puffer, it will start to go down into deeper water.

The only predator to the pufferfish is the shark. Sharks can eat pufferfish without getting poisoned. Their toxin is not effective to the shark.
