INDABA 2015 Africa’s Top Travel Show has come a long way in Durban...
I
NDABA is the biggest platform for African tourism businesses to meet global buyers and showcase their products and services. The three-day event brings together Africa’s best tourism and travel trade offerings, attracting potential clients from all over the world.
In 1979 the first Tourism INDABA took place in Johannesburg. It was no doubt a very small gathering of stakeholders, hoping to make an impact on the industry. In subsequent years, the INDABA remained a limited affair, holding their first Durban event in 1987 - at the then Durban Exhibition Centre - drawing a crowd of just 188 exhibitors. The event didn’t visit the sunny shores of Durban again for two years until 1990, when the Durban Exhibition Centre once again hosted the event – managing only slightly better than before by drawing 200 exhibitors. The Durban Exhibition Centre then hosted the INDABA for a further five years from 1992 to 1997, with a special travel workshop replacing the INDABA in 1994 due to the first South African democratic elections. The total number of exhibitors for this five year period was an impressive 1830 - a number that spurred further growth for the event.
4
http://www.5stardurban.co.za
Meanwhile construction of the Durban ICC had begun in 1994 and was officially opened on 8 August 1997 by President Nelson Mandela, which has seen the event held here even since. In 2000, it took over management of the Durban Exhibition Centre and in 2004 the ICC Arena expansion was officially opened on the site of the old Durban Prison. The resulting complex, now called the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Conference Centre Complex (ICC Durban, ICC Arena and DEC-Durban Exhibition Centre), is the largest flat floor, column-free exhibitions and meetings space in Africa. Scott Langley, Marketing and Sales Manager at the ICC Stated in an interview with The SA-Mag; “The whole project ran smoothly with government backing. At the time it was an extremely ambitious concept to approve a convention centre, as there was nothing like it anywhere in South Africa. There was a lot of history there and the new building has retained the old guard tower and a couple of the external walls, one of which has a number 5Durban
of murals painted by artists, which depict the civil rights struggle in South Africa and in particular the Bill of Rights; We have kept these historical monuments as a reminder of our past and we feel this is quite apt, given that the building is now very much a centre of enlightenment and emancipation through the events that we host. We feel it is good to hold the extremes in parallel” In the past 17 years, the Durban hosted INDABA has attracted many thousands of international buyers, exhibitors and media representatives. The event doubled in size in 2006, with number of visitors peaking in 2010 when the event saw a staggering total of 1820 Exhibitors. More than 400 exhibitors have already booked their places on the tradeshow floor for 2015 - and this number no doubt set to soar as the event draws near. South African Tourism is working to make sure that INDABA 2015 exceeds the business expectations of both exhibitors and buyers. Chief Executive Officer, Mr Thulani Nzima said: “Every single INDABA element must give exhibitors an unrivalled and effective platform to showcase their products and services and to do business. INDABA belongs to them. INDABA is the single biggest platform for African tourism businesses to come and meet global buyer delegates. This tradeshow attracts the cream and the best cross section of the African tourism and travel trade which in turn, attracts the best buyers in the world to INDABA.” This year Tourism INDABA and ‘We Are Africa’ will collaborate again, as they did in 2014, under the banner: ‘Two Shows One Africa’ – bringing both the Cape Town event and the Durban event under one banner. Nzima is optimistic that it will be a successful partnership, bringing the best exposure possible to African tourism products and seeking to “firmly establish the week of 4-11 May 2015 as the continent’s not-to-be-missed travel showcase.” For more information, visit http://www.indaba-southafrica.co.za

GOING TO THE
Races
Back a winner this Durban July with a host of talented local designers
F
ashion has always been a huge part of going to the races, with many men and women opting for a day at the races to see, and be seen. Over the years, fashion has changed, but the golden standard as set by Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady still prevails, with wide brimmed hats, eccentric accessories, new-age materials and brave models. The Durban July has taken on the role of being one of the biggest fashion events of the year in South Africa, giving designers and fashionistas a spectacular opportunity to “strut their stuff ” and be noticed! Greyville Racetrack - always the gracious host – has managed year after year, to entice young designers, fashionistas and punters alike to take part in the gleeful frivolity of fancy-dress, as some may call it.
Ken Teddell, the marketing manager for Gold Circle announced recently that the theme (as there is always a theme at the races) would be “The Captains Table”. This is a rather broad theme, and allows decadent indulgence for designers and fashionistas, as the underlying theme is “posh” – just as if one was dining at the coveted Captains Table! This year’s poem The Captain’s Table explains: The anticipation mounts, the crew are prepped and ready The passengers are welcomed, the excitement… yes, it’s heady The cruise ship’s mighty horn booms, we’re off on our way We jostle for position, to enjoy this thrill-packed day We’ll party with old friends, maybe make some new Dress posh to impress, who knows who we’ll bump into But what we’re really after, the ultimate it seems, The exclusive gilt-edged invite, the one you see in dreams The era is irrelevant, it’s always been the same When one’s invited to The Captain’s Table, one has to up one’s game Dress is all important, whether you be King or Queen You’ll feel like a celebrity, the place to see… and be seen Crystal and silver will shine, splendid food and fine wine The Vodacom Durban July – a massive ship, sail with us, enjoy the trip. … 5Durban

TAKING DURBAN TO THE WORLD The city of Durban has been winning hearts and holiday budgets across the world, and 2014 was certainly a good year as far as international media attention goes, with everyone from The New York Times to the New 7 Wonders group finding this little piece of paradise far too appealing to overlook. A
only truly South African city, with a rich cultural heritage, and a working society of all races and creeds - nowhere else in the world will one find such a rich tapestry of culture and diversity. The city is alive and growing, with burgeoning talent everywhere. “Street Art” has become commonplace, and it has transfigured some of the less beautiful parts of the city into spectacular works of art.
Most South Africans will tell you that Durban is favoured for the pristine, Miami style beaches and promenade, the fantastic weather, and genuinely good value for money, among other things. For the longest time Durban has (unintentionally) remained one of the best kept secrets from most international travelers, but the recent spike in attention – and development - seems to be steering the tourism sector in Durban toward international greatness, with international tourists being romanced and attracted by the plethora of cultural experiences, tropical holiday weather, and just about the most beautiful scenery in the country. Durban is slowly becoming a gateway to tourists seeking the full “beach & bush” safari experience, and most will find themselves enchanted by the cultural diversity. Durban is the
2014 saw the revival of the 8 Morrison warehouse, located in the heart of the Rivertown Precinct, 2 city blocks east of the International Convention Centre. This 1905 warehouse (old beer hall) bought by Propertuity (developers of the Maboneng Precinct, Johannesburg) has since become a hub for creativity, lifestyle and culture in the city. This, together with the I Heart Market at Moses Mabhida Stadium has created a fantastic “handcrafted” movement, where clever and crafty purveyors of their crafts are introduced to the growing population of “buy handmade” aware shoppers, and is without a doubt one of the best places to find unique wares in Durban.

ccording to recent statistics released by Durban Tourism, Durban appears to be far in the lead when it comes to a top regional destination. Over 70% of visitors to the KwaZulu-Natal province opted to visit Durban, with the sunny seaside city being a clear favourite among domestic travelers – Durban is, after all, South Africa’s playground.

The past year also saw the development continuing on the beachfront promenade, which stretches from Umhlanga to Ushaka Marine World and, when completed will certainly be a world class stretch of some of the finest coast Africa has to offer. Dotted along these golden beaches one will find prestigious hotels, lavish homes and some of the best fun one could hope to have. The Estuary at the Umgeni River mouth is set to be renewed, and the Durban Green Corridor initiative is bringing eco-tourism to the forefront, offering fantastic nature and cultural experiences just a stones throw from the bustling city.
“Durban is currently producing millionaires faster than any other city in South Africa”
With all this going on, it is hard to believe that the city of Durban could possibly have any more up its’ sleeve, but think again! Durban is currently producing millionaires faster than any other city in South Africa, and with this comes some serious luxury – The northern suburbs of Durban have become a playground for the rich and famous, and is surely a destination of choice for discerning luxury travelers. Durban has long been known for warm and gracious hospitality, and this seems set for growth and an injection of luxury, with Suncoast Casino and Entertainment World planning large scale development and expansion. With the USA, UK & Europe being the city’s top source for international tourists, the City is obviously doing something right – 2014 saw over 7 million local and international tourists visit Durban (an increase of around 12% on 2013 figures), the majority of whom visited during
Easter and the off-peak season - with a direct spend of over R19 billion. That’s quite something for the underdog

T
he Comrades was run for the first time on 24 May 1921 (Empire Day) and, with the exception of a break during World War II, has been run every year since. The move toward this ultramarathon was started by World War I veteran Vic Clapham, to commemorate the South African soldiers killed during the war. Clapham, who had endured a 2,700-kilometre route march through sweltering German East Africa, wanted the memorial to be a unique test of the physical endurance of the entrants. The constitution of the race states that one of its primary aims is to “celebrate mankind’s spirit over adversity.” 1920s - Forty-eight runners entered the first race in 1921, but only thirty-four elected to start. The course at the time was tarred only for the final few kilometres into Durban. A time limit of 12 hours was set and Bill Rowan became the inaugural winner, clocking 08:59 to win by 41 minutes ahead of Harry Phillips. Of the 34 starters, only 16 completed the race. Arthur Newton entered and won the race for the first time in 1922. He went on to win the race five times and emerge as the dominant Comrades runner of the 1920s. When he completed the down run in 06:56 in 1923, there were only a handful of spectators on hand to witness the finish because so few thought it possible that the race could be run so quickly. The first woman to run the race was Frances Hayward in 1923, but her entry was refused, so she was an unofficial entrant. She completed the event in 11:35 and although she was not awarded a Comrades medal, the other runners and spectators presented her with a silver tea service and a rose bowl. In 1924 the Comrades had its fewest starters ever - just 24. Four years later, in 1928, the time limit for the race was reduced by an hour to 11 hours. 1930s - Hardy Ballington emerged as the dominant runner, recording four victories in 1933, 1934, 1936 and 1938. The winner of the 1930 race, Wally Hayward, became one of the greatest legends of the Comrades Marathon, winning a further four times in the fifties, and becoming the oldest man to complete the race in 1989. In 1932 Geraldine Watson, an unofficial entrant, became the first woman to complete both the up run and the down run. 1940s - After Ballington’s domination of the 1930s, Comrades was stopped during the war years from 1941 to 1945. In 1948 a Comrades tradition was born when race official Max Trimborn, instead of firing the customary starter’s gun, gave a loud imitation of a cock’s crow. That tradition still continues to the present day, with Trimborn’s recorded voice played over loudspeakers at the starting line. 1950s - A full twenty years after he won the race for the first time, Wally Hayward recorded his second victory and followed that up with wins in 1951, 1953 and 1954. He represented South Africa at the 1952 Olympic Games in Helsinki, where he finished tenth in the marathon. Hayward retired from the Comrades after establishing new records for both the up and down runs and equaling the five wins of Newton and Ballington. In 1958, the race was won for the first time by Jackie Mekler, who went on to win the race five times, finishing second twice and third twice. 1960s - The Comrades grew considerably, from 104 starters in 1960 to 703 starters in 1969. Due to the bigger fields, cut-off points were introduced at Drummond and Cato Ridge. Mekler became the first man to break the six-hour barrier in 1960, finishing in 5:56:32. The 1961 winner was George Claassen, a school principal and father of well-known Wynand Claassen, Springbok rugby captain during 198183. Claassen junior also finished the Comrades ten times in later years. In 1962, the race attracted foreign entries for the first time as the Road Runners Club of England sent over four of the best long-distance runners in Britain. English runner John Smith won the race, an up run, in under six hours, missing out on the course record by 33 seconds. Watching the stragglers come in hours later, Smith commented to former winner Bill Cochrane that the other people completing the race were getting as much applause as he had received. “You are now witnessing the spirit of the Comrades,” replied Cochrane.

“ one of its primary aims is to ‘celebrate mankind’s spirit over adversity’ ” In 1965, English runner Bernard Gomersall broke Mekler’s down run record with a time of 5:51:09. In 1967, Manie Kuhn and Tommy Malone were involved in the closest finish in the history of the race. Malone appeared to be on his way to a comfortable win and was handed the traditional message from the Mayor of Pietermaritzburg to the Mayor of Durban at Tollgate with a lead of two minutes over Kuhn. He entered the stadium in the lead with only 80 metres left to go. Suddenly Kuhn appeared only 15 metres behind and closed in quickly. Malone put in a burst for the line, but with only 15 metres left he fell to the ground with cramps. He attempted to get up again, but with the line within reach Kuhn flew past to grab victory. The mayoral message was forgotten as both runners embraced. 1970s - The Comrades had over 1,000 starters for the first time in 1971, with over 3,000 in 1979. 1975 was a momentous year in the history of the Comrades Marathon - apart from this year marking the Golden Jubilee, the 50th running of this world classic long distance race, it was also noteworthy for the introduction of a number of innovations and indeed a substantial character change in the race. For the first time in its long history the event was officially opened to runners of all race groups as well as female competitors. In the same year, Vincent Rakabele finished 20th to become the first black runner to officially win a medal. Elizabeth Cavanaugh became the first women’s winner in a shade over 10 hours. 1976 saw the emergence of Alan Robb, who won the first of his four Comrades titles. Robb repeated his win in 1977, 1978 and 1980, including breaking the tape in Durban in 1978 in a record 5:29:14, almost 20 minutes and four kilometres ahead of runner-up Dave Wright. 5Durban
Comrades Marathon
LOOKING GOOD AT 90! This year, The Comrades celebrates its 90th edition and will see over 20,000 runners take on the “up” race from Durban to Pietermaritzburg. We take a look at the long, proud history behind the world’s oldest and largest ultramarathon.
1980s - The Comrades began with a field of 4,207 in 1980 and topped 5,000 for the first time in 1983. In 1981, Bruce Fordyce won the first of his eventual nine Comrades titles. An outspoken critic of apartheid, Fordyce and a number of other athletes initially decided to boycott the 1981 event when organisers announced that they would associate it with the 20th anniversary of the Republic of South Africa. Fordyce ultimately competed wearing a black armband to signal his protest. He repeated his victories in 1982, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1986 (a record 5:24:07 down run), 1987, 1988 (a record 5:27:42 for the up run), and 1990. In 1989, Sam Tshabalala became the first black winner of the Comrades. Schoolteacher Frith van der Merwe won the women’s race in 1988 in a time of 6:32:56. In 1989, Van der Merwe ran 5:54:43, obliterating the women’s record and finishing fifteenth overall. In the same year Wally Hayward entered the race at the age of 79 and finished in 9:44:15. He repeated the feat in the 1989 Comrades, where he completed the race with only two minutes to spare and at the age of 80 became the oldest man to complete the Comrades. 1990s - The size of the starting field was in the region of 12,000 to 14,000 runners. In 1995 prize money was introduced, attracting more foreign competitors. The traditional race day of May 31, formerly Republic Day, was changed to June 16, the anniversary of the Soweto uprising. In 1992 Charl Mattheus, crossed the finish line first, but was later disqualified 5Durban
after testing positive for a banned substance. He claimed it was contained in medicine he had taken for a sore throat, but Jetman Msutu was elevated to the winner, thus becoming the second black winner of the Comrades. In a sad twist for Mattheus, the substance for which he was banned was later removed from the IAAF’s banned substance list since all evidence pointed to it having no performance enhancing properties. Mattheus also suffered much negativity in the public eye but later managed to redeem his clean image with an emphatic faultless win in the 1997 down run beating a strong local and international field. 2000s - The 75th anniversary of the Comrades Marathon in 2000 was the largest ever staged, with a massive field of 23,961. An extra hour was allowed for bronze medal finishers to celebrate the milestone. In 2010, on its 85th anniversary, the race gained a place in the Guinness World Records as the ultramarathon with the most runners. 14,343 athletes - the largest field since the turn of the millennium - finished in the allowed 12 hours. Identical twin sisters Olesya and Elena Nurgalieva won a combined ten Comrades titles from 2003–2013, while three-time champion Stephen Muzhingi became the first non-South African winner from Africa in 2009. Stephen Muzhingi also became the first athlete to win three races in a row (2009, 2010 and 2011) since Bruce Fordyce in the eighties. Russian runner Leonid Shvetsov set both down and up course records in 2007 and 2008, respectively. The Comrades has come a long way since that 34-runner race of 1921, however the spirit of sacrifice, selflessness, comradery and courage that the race embodies remains true to this day. We wish the best of luck to all those competing in this year’s milestone event

Working in the Japanese tradition with thick chun glazes sifted by hand from wood ash, colours of rich resonant tenmokus, fatty whites and shades of celadon, he then decorates the pots with specially imported Japanese brushes. The kiln which he designed and built himself is fired about eight times a year with paraffin oil to a temperature of 1380 degrees Celsius. It takes 18 hours to fire and 3 days to cool. The city fathers commissioned the new town hall in 1903, choosing what they termed a ‘bold and progressive’ design submitted by architect Stanley Hudson. Hudson set about creating a replica of the Belfast City Hall in Northern Ireland. In addition to the mayor’s parlour and municipal chambers, the building houses a public library, auditorium, and the Durban Art Gallery and Natural Science Museum.
