EAGLE RIVER – An enchanting sleigh ride through a scenic wooded trail in northern Wisconsin awaits those stopping by at Rocking W Stable just north of Eagle River. All ages will enjoy their holiday sleigh rides beginning Saturday, Dec. 14. Their final day to hitch up the teams for sleigh rides is Jan. 1, so make reservations now for family and

Now in their 23rd year, the Rocking W Stable folks are proud of providing a family tra dition of Northwoods hospitality and charm. This is truly a unique way to experience the beauty of the Northwoods with a festive twist. Rides are offered daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and each lasting about an hour. Wagons are used if there is little or no snow cover. Their sleigh drivers, office managers and campfire tenders all look forward to provid ing you a wonderful sleigh ride experience, said a spokesperson. What can be more magical than watching youngsters gaze up in wonder at the towering, but gentle Bel gians, Shires, North American Spotted Draft, and Percherons draft horses! A Percheron at 2,000 pounds can weigh more than a VW Beetle!

MAKE RESERVATIONS

You can make reservations (strongly preferred) by calling 715-617-6779. However, they do their best to accommodate walk-ins. Payment is either by cash or check. They are not set up for credit cards. For pricing, visit rockingwstables-kartway.com.

Rocking W Stable has seven big sleighs, holding 18 to 22 people each; three 4-seater sleighs, holding 6-10 people each and one vis-à-vis sleigh, holding 1-5 people.

If romance is in the air, including engagements or wedding anniversaries, cozy up with a loved one or the wedding party in one of their smaller sleighs. Scheduling a birthday party is another possibility. Private rides, such as business-sponsored, are available. With notice, they are happy to help create lifelong memories around these milestones.

Hitching a ride on the sleigh or wagon is like sitting around a table family-style. Every one is welcomed. So, bring a friend or the entire family or if solo, they will fit you in with a friendly group.

GOING ON THE RIDE

The majestic draft horses pull the sleighs through the three-mile trail at a leisurely pace. The snow-covered trees and the jingle of bells tinkling to the rhythmic stride of the horses will have you thinking you’re in a Currier & Ives landscape. You might see white-tailed deer (including some impressive bucks), fox, red and gray squirrels, and chipmunks.

At the halfway mark, everyone gathers around the campfire to warm up and to sip hot chocolate.

Rocking W staff offer the following suggestions: Dress warm and bring a blanket to snuggle under for added warmth. You can bring snacks and beverages. The horses are happy to receive apples or carrots. (Hint: Drivers and office staff have never met a cook ie they didn’t like.)

Photos of the horses, the trail and campfire are also encouraged. Then share stories and post the photos on Facebook or Instagram. Your photos also make great personalized Christmas cards!

Rocking W Stable is located at 1890 Pleasure Island Road just off Highway 45 on Eagle River’s north side.

Say It with Us – ‘Friluftsliv’

The Northwoods of Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan is your ideal winter getaway. Close to home, yet far enough away to escape big city pressures, and with numerous activities to keep all members of the family engaged and happy.

We’re waiting for Mother Nature to deliver enough snow to ski and snowmobile and for the extended cold to make lake ice safe for fishing and snowmobile travel. (Some ski resorts and cross-country destinations get an early start because they make their own snow.)

If it’s too early for the kids to make snow forts, suggest they make pillow forts as you bake their favorite cookies. In the evening, take them for a drive or walk to admire the

Just past the holidays will be weeks and weeks of great snowmobiling, ATVing and cross-country skiing, along with ice fishing. Winter festivals, tournaments and races on the weekends will draw you in whether as a participant or spectator.

No matter the depth of the snow and lake ice, it’s good to get outside in the Northwoods and breathe in the crisp air.

The Northwoods is a wonderful place for friluftsliv (pronounced free-loofts-liv), the Norwegian philosophy that encourages people to connect with nature and spend time outdoors.

And wouldn’t you know it, we’ve been living all these years pursuing friluftsliv in the land they call “Up North.”

The trails going through Spooner offer easy access to a variety of lodging and din ing options, spe cialty retail stores, and a large parking area for vehicles and trailers while you are out on the trails.

Hard-working local snowmobile clubs have developed a top-notch trail system that crosses public and private lands, lakes, streams and bridges. The varied terrain includes hardwood and evergreen forests, wetlands and farm fields. You’ll see towering pines, rolling hills and deep valleys. Nearly 1,000 lakes in the area offer more than 30,000 acres of lake riding. Most trails are maintained from early December through March, depending on conditions. Always check trail conditions prior to riding. Trail maps are available at supporting member businesses as well as the Washburn County Information Center located at 122 N River Street, Spooner.

Explore Dickinson County’s Winter Recreation

DICKINSON COUNTY – Don’t let winter slide by without visiting the greater Iron Mountain area, billed as “the Gateway to the U.P.” Iron Mountain borders Wisconsin and has all the lodging and trail amenities you desire for a snowmobile or fat tire bike trip to the beautiful Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

The 140 miles of groomed snowmobile trails in the county networks with the rest of the Upper Peninsula and northern Wisconsin so there’s no shortage of trail riding available for the adventurous.

The scenery on the trails is simply “breathtaking.” The trails traverse deep woods, pass by vertical granite outcroppings glistening with frozen waterfalls, and to a crossing of the Menominee River via a trestle bridge. Dickinson County enjoys well-groomed and marked trails thanks to the volunteers of the Tri-County Snowmobile Club. When it’s time to refuel the body, check out the local restaurants and taverns offering food from monster-size hamburgers to mouth-watering steaks and Friday night fish frys.

Surging in popularity across the UP is fat tire biking. The sport features mountain bikes with “fat tires” of about 3.8 inches wide that allows riders to get outside on groomed trails when heavy snow falls. The following trails are part of the Dickinson Trail Network and are regularly groomed each winter for fat tire biking.

Fumee Lake Natural Area -- The Fumee Lake Natural Area has 14 miles of trails that range in difficulty, length and terrain. Some 4.4 miles are single track. The local users recommend these regularly maintained trails: Little Fumee Lake Loop, Big Fumee Lake Loop and South Ridge Loop. The North and South Mountain Loops are also groomed. Follow the Fumee Lake trail map for other trails and to decide which is best for your skill level.

Millie Hill Trails -- This set of trails in Iron Mountain features top-notch, single-track mountain biking year-round that you can ride with a fat tire bike, too. Built to International Mountain Bike Association standards, Millie Hill ensures sustainability, erosion resistance and minimal environmental impact. Millie Hill itself is a 200-foot vertical drop with access to eight unique trails that range across difficulty levels.

Norway South Trails -- Marion Park in Norway is the trailhead for 9 miles of groomed, single-track fat tire biking trails in this system. The following are the groomed trails: Oak Crest Connector, Ez Eh, Bear Hunt, Panorama, Racing Stripes, Paper Route, and Squatch/Jackalope Hybrid.
