Editor’s Column Travel Dreams Come Alive in the Northwoods At some point in the future, we’ll mark our past experiences as: Before COVID, After COVID. I’m hoping we’re at that turning point where life more fully resumes its normalcy. There are clear signs it is: this issue highlights just some of the many public activities we’ve grown to love and cherish that are returning. A year ago, many, if not most, of the tournaments, radar runs, celebrations, productions, etc., fell by the wayside as people and sponsoring organizations cancelled them or held them virtually due to COVID-19 concerns. Now, most are back on the winter calendar, albeit a select number with social distancing guidelines. But it’s safe to say it’s a
good time to come Up North to get rejuvenated. There are ski hills to conquer, numerous cross-country ski trails in which to immerse one’s self in the deep woods, and thousands of miles of snowmobile routes to explore. Lest we forget, no other area in the Midwest can boast as many freshwater lakes as we do. Or as many fish! Wherever your journey takes you, you’ll meet the people who make the Northwoods so special, with friendly smiles, a wave of the hand, and helpful advice when you’re turned around. There are small cities and even smaller towns – some without a stoplight -- to greet you and your fellow adventure seekers. We’re proud of where we live and hope you find a meaningful connection to this place, we call Up North! Dean Acheson, Editor

ComeOverToPlover.com Portage County has hundreds of miles of snowmobile trails COUNTYWIDE -- Wisconsin is where snowmobiling was born and continues to offer some of the best snowmobiling opportunities you are likely to find anywhere. More than 200,000 registered snowmobiles hit Wisconsin’s 25,000 miles of groomed trails each winter. The riders discover new trails, meet new friends and enjoy amenities on the trails, such as restaurants and other pitstops. Portage County has nearly 300 miles of groomed scenic snowmobile trails to ride on. While the trails may open a bit later than those further “Up North,” they are still a lot of fun when they do. The county has six snowmobile trail zones (openings and closings specific to each). The snowmobile trail hotline for trail conditions is 715-343-6277. Wisconsin requires snowmobiles riding the trails in Wisconsin to have a state trail pass. If you are a member of a club and a member of AWCS, (Association of Wisconsin Snowmobile Clubs) that trail pass will cost you $10 per year. Non-members will pay $30 per year.
Alliance of Portage County Snowmobile Clubs
Central Region
Looking to meet fellow snowmobilers in Central Wisconsin? There are 10 snowmobile clubs that belong to the Alliance of Portage County Snowmobile Clubs. monthly meetings (September—May), club members from each of the 10 localized clubs share information on current local activities and events. To see a map of Portage County snowmobile trails, go to the Alliance website (portagecountysnow.com). The Town of Plover has motels, restaurants, pubs and other attractions that will make your stay enjoyable. Some lodging facilities in the county have direct access to snowmobile trails in Portage County. Most offer ample parking for trucks and trailers and you may be able to drive your snowmobile to a nearby gas station. Along your travels, or at one of the many places to stop and eat, you might encounter members of the Plover Spuds on Snow. This club doesn’t have any trails of its own to maintain. For years, the Plover area didn’t have a snowmobile club and secondly, the trails that run through Plover were already established and being maintained by neighboring clubs. Belonging to a club allows members to access different village roads to get to trails, as well as support the businesses that support them. The Spuds meet monthly to discuss snowmobiling concerns and to socialize after the meetings. Club rides are featured, as well as meeting for dinner and the Christmas party. Members take part in fundraisers. During the warmer months they golf and camp together. The Plover Spuds on Snow meets the third Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. at Smiley’s Bar and Grill in Plover. The meetings are open to all interested.

The course is easy to moderate.
After the Feb. 5 events, there will be an awards ceremony and meal at the Mercer Community Center.

Frozen in Time: Our Love for Ice Fishing LAND O’ LAKES – You’re never far from a quality fishing lake while visiting Land O’ Lakes. This Vilas County community near the border with Michigan is surrounded by hundreds of glacial lakes that, for the most part, are good fish producers. The lakes are pristine and have abundant numbers of panfish and gamefish for those anglers toting ice augers and pulling sleds. For the most part, they’re after walleye, northern pike and panfish. But bass and trout are also caught. Among the favorite lakes is Black Oak Lake, a very clear 564-acre lake, located just east of Land O’ Lakes. It has a mean depth of 34 feet and a maximum depth of 85 feet. Access is via a public boat landing on County Highway B. Lac Vieux Desert Lake is also popular with fishermen. In the past, the Phelps-Land O’ Lakes Lions Club has held their Great Northern Ice Fishing Tournaments on this large lake that tops out at more than 4,200 acres and with a maximum depth of 38 feet. No word yet for on any 2022 tournament, so check with the local chamber of commerce for an update. Lac Vieux Desert holds good numbers of muskies, perch, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, northern pike and walleyes. It’s a lake that draws trophy hunters as well as people of all ages who enjoy brisk panfishing. Access is from one of the lake’s two public boat landings. You’ll find one ramp on the lake’s west store and a second ramp in Michigan off Misery Bay Road.

Land O’ Lakes Welcomes Mushers, Canine Racers LAND O’ LAKES – Happy trails and happy tails will be much in evidence in Land O’ Lakes the first weekend of February 2022. That’s because the popular Three Bear Sled Dog Race will return after last year’s absence. Slated for Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 5 & 6, the event will see upwards of 80 or so race teams competing for top honors and cash prizes in various classes. Teams are mostly from the Midwest, but a few teams from Canada, Montana and New York have also competed in the past. They added a purebred division for this year, along with the usual skijoring 2-, 4-, 6- and 8-dog divisions. Races start at 10 a.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. Sunday and go through the afternoon each day. This race is very spectator-friendly, with the start and finish on the town hall grounds in downtown Land O’ Lakes. Indeed, spectators can smooze with the dogs and mushers as they await their turn on the course that runs just south of town. Just be sure to check with the handlers before approaching the dogs, as they may be busy getting the dogs harnessed and ready to run. Too, leave your own dog at home, as they are a distraction to the race dogs.
Northcentral Region
This will be the 41st year that the Three Bear has been held. Last year’s event was literally washed out after severe flooding in the fall delayed trail brushing until it was too late. This year, thanks to donated equipment, they reconfigured the course so it lies entirely within Vilas County, and thus avoiding a swampy area. Kids can enter their dog (some team owners lend a dog) in the mutt races, scheduled for noon on both Saturday and Sunday. In addition to the above, the town’s ice-skating rink will be open (ice skates will be available), along with a bonfire, food at the fire department and hot pasties on the grounds. Check out the retail sales around town. Saturday night features a “mushers’ ball” at Gateway Lodge, open to the public. The local humane society is accepting donations of dog and cat food and kitty litter. For updates and more information, follow them on their Facebook page or visit Land O’ Lakes Chamber’s website, golandolakeswi.com.

Merrill Hosts Unique Races MERRILL – The sounds of dogs yipping and spinning tires will herald the return to Merrill of two popular winter events.
Merrill Winterfest Sled Dog Race
Northcentral Region
The International Sled Dog Racing Association-sanctioned races, sponsored by the Wisconsin Trail-blazers Sled Dog Club, will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 22 and 9 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 23 at Pine River School for Young Learners, 4165 State Hwy. 61. Spectator admission is free.
30
There will be 3-dog junior, 4-, 6-, and 10-dog, 1- and 2-dog skijoring races, as well as kiddie and celebrity races. Once the dogs are at the starting line, the excited barking ends as they get down to business of doing their favorite thing – pulling the lightweight sled and the musher along the snow-covered race course. Visitors can find refreshments and raffles inside the school. You can follow the club schedule on Facebook or visit witrailblazers.shutterfly.com. Upcoming sled dog races include the Willow Spring Round Barn Sled Rally on Feb. 19-20 in Wausau and the Heal Creek Dog Dash on Feb. 26-27 in Rhinelander.
Merrill Ice Drags Races Merrill Ice Drags will kick off the race season on Saturday, Jan. 15 on Lake Alexander at Council Grounds State Park, with registration beginning at 9 a.m. and racing starting at noon. They host various classes from rubber tire to outlaw.
Dec/Jan 2022 | UpNorthAction.com
The event includes more than 15 race classes, including for classic muscle cars, high-speed “rail” cars, souped up trucks and SUVs, even family cars and minivans. An average of 50 racers compete for cash, prizes and trophies. Drivers come from as far away as Ohio, Indiana and Iowa to race. The track setup is a hybrid of Mother Nature and man-made technology. It features frozen snow banks separating the two drag tracks, a modern timing system, a two-story race control tower and a “Christmas tree” stuck in the frozen snow. Some of the racers run “nailies” – tires with 3,000 to 3,5000 drywall screws protruding from the tires for the absolute best ice traction. The volunteer workers actually plow four lanes at season start; rotating the two tracks so they can flood and freeze the battered lanes once the races are done. The club notes they host “the fastest 1/8th mile drag auto racing on ice in the world.” The world record -- 141.6 MPH and 5.431 ET in 660 feet – was set on this track! They race for five consecutive Saturdays (weather permitting), and end with the grudge match/bracket races. Admission to the race is free. If you want a closer look, there is pit gate admission with a fee. Under six years of age admitted free. Parking on the ice is free; parking in the state park’s lots will require a state park sticker.
We look forward to helping you with your marketing needs in 2022!

Here Fishy, Fishy, Fishy! Here’s the Line on Tournaments Northern Wisconsin becomes an ice angler’s dream destination once the lakes develop a solid layer of ice, with endless opportunities to bring home a bag limit of northern pike, walleye, and panfish. No longer content to shiver in the cold, or be frozen in one spot, today’s ice angler is mobile, aided by his or her ATV or snowmobile; encased in modern fabrics and footwear that keep the cold at bay; and helped by astonishing electronics to locate and catch fish on the fly. Typically, you only need an auger, bait bucket, live bait, a couple tip-ups and a rod to ice fish. And while savvy veterans have their “secret” lakes, truth be known almost any size lake can be a producer. Check with a local bait shop for lake advice as you pick up minnows, waxies and artificial bait for your outing. Remember, too, that professional fishing guides don’t rest on their laurels after the warmer months. Many, if not most, are well schooled in ice fishing too. Some also have cozy ice shanties that you can rent for the day or longer.

Double your family fun by taking in one of the dozens of fishing tournaments in the region. Many are run by civic organizations that use the proceeds for good causes, including restocking the lakes you fish!

Explore the UP by Snowmobile Snowmobiling in the Upper Peninsula is always excellent because of the large amount of snow that blankets the area with upwards of 300 inches each season due to the lake effect snow off Lake Superior. Some 155 miles of snowmobile trails radiate from Lake Gogebic like a giant spoke wheel, taking riders to all parts of the Western Upper Peninsula and down into Wisconsin if they wish. The scenery is what you would expect for a near wilderness area – expansive forests, cedar swamps and scenic overlooks. Riders often stop on the trail bridges to view the pristine rivers and streams far below. Gogebic Area Groomers do a great job of not only maintaining trails, but also in updates on the trails so that guests know what to expect before they arrive. You can follow Gogebic Area Grooming on Facebook and on their website at gogebicareagrooming.com. There are plenty of opportunities for a day’s ride on groomed and marked snowmobile trails, getting you back to your lodging for an evening meal before resting your head on the pillow and visiting dreamland. But if you want to explore vast distances with an overnight stay before returning, here’s one recommended route:
U.P. Michigan Region
Lake Gogebic to Iron Mountain: Saddle up and take Trail 1 or 13 south to Trail 2, east to Watersmeet, through Iron River and stopping at Iron Mountain for your overnight stay – a trip of approximately 130 miles. The next morning, head north on Trail 5, then east on Trail 16 to Crystal Falls where you head north on Trail 111 to Trail 15 north, to Trail 8 and go west through Kenton, Bruce Crossing, Ewen and Bergland – a trip of approximately 150 miles.

Registration and a vendor display will take place Friday from 4-10 p.m. at the Memorial Building Auditorium.
On Saturday, they will begin the SISU race on the ABR Trails. The course ends in Historic Downtown Ironwood’s new City Square Park. Racers can expect well-groomed trails that pass through forested landscapes, ups and downs among rocky outcrops, gentle sections along the Montreal River and a former railroad grade, and a few twists and turns through the Miners Memorial Heritage Park. Top finishers will be awarded locally crafted age group awards. But everyone can purchase commemorative SISU souvenirs. Afterwards, stop by at the Historic Ironwood Theatre where you can unwind with the music of the Black River Band, libations and the camaraderie of fellow skiers.
