Summer Fun Peaking, Colorama Beauty is Next
We took a peek and autumn is just around the corner. But sun worshipers can take solace in the fact that Old Sol plans plenty of summer sun and fun for several more weeks yet. Indeed, August can be the peak of vacation time in the north as families carve out together time before the start of school.
Dean S. Acheson
Looking across the landscape we see the arrival of thousands of motorcyclists for the Fall Ride to Tomahawk Sept. 12-15. The rumble of Harleys, Hondas, Victorys, and other brands of motorcycles will be heard from Wausau to Hurley, from Park Falls to Crandon. The highlight of the week is the Friday night Thunder Parade where upwards of a thousand bikes embark on a nearly 20-mile tour of the countryside around Tomahawk. Mid-September is the start of Colorama in the Northwoods. The shutter clicks of cameras will sound like a swarm of cicadas as people capture the beauty of leaves bathed in hues of golds and reds against a backdrop of forest evergreens. Nearly every community will roll out the red carpet to welcome visitors to harvest dinners, fall festivals and cranberry bog tours. The leaves themselves will be shaking around Crandon the Labor Day weekend during Crandon International Off-Road Raceway’s championship races featuring high-powered trucks and agile buggies. The larger 800-horsepower beasts roar, spit fire and fling dirt as they gallop toward the finish line that bring tens of thousands of fans to their feet. Superior welcomes fire-breathing creatures of a different kind for their annual Lake Superior Dragon Boat Festival races off Baker’s Island on Aug. 23-24. It’s one of the largest dragon boat festivals in North America, organizers say. Friday night on-shore festivities are planned with racing all day Saturday. The Chequamegon Fat Tire Festival in Cable and Hayward is filled with spinning wheels with the two races set for Saturday, Sept. 14. Nearly 3,000 bicyclists will take part in the three-day festival that begins Friday. All in all, we have to say Sol continues to smile down on the land they call “Up North.”

Rutabaga Festival Welcomes Canoe/Kayak Races (CUMBERLAND) – Bag five days of fun by attending the 81st annual Rutabaga Fest Thursday through Sunday, Aug. 21-25 in Cumberland. The event celebrates the root vegetable known as rutabaga, that in the U.S. is a staple of stews and casseroles, served mashed with carrots or baked in a pasty. Admittedly, it’s an oft-forgotten veggie but you won’t forget the fun you had at this year’s celebration. Sponsored by the Cumberland Chamber of Commerce, the Rutabaga Festival features the STIPES show on the midway starting Thursday, live entertainment on the main stage, and lots of festival food and drink throughout the celebration. Most events get rolling Friday through Sunday including the truck pull on Friday.

Unleash the Dragons! (SUPERIOR) – The distinctive dragon boats that race each August in Superior don’t actually breathe fire and smoke, but one doesn’t have to look far or wait long to see fire and smoke. As in the flamecolored racing regalia worn by a Canadian women’s team (nicknamed “Women on Fire”) or the cheers of the 22-member crews when they “smoke” the competition. Nearly a hundred teams will gather for the 12th annual Lake Superior Dragon Boat Festival on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 23 and 24. It’s one of the largest dragon boat races in North America. Racing begins at 8 a.m. Saturday just off Barker’s Island, headquarters of this popular event. Finals begin at 5:55pm. Spectator admission is free but plan to hop the free shuttle bus from Mariner Mall parking lot, 69 N. 28th St., as vehicular traffic is limited on the island. Friday afternoon’s schedule includes a parade of teams (on land), opening ceremony of “Waking the Dragon,” concerts and the fireworks show. Then on Saturday, enjoy the races, craft fair, festivaltype food, song and music, sword demonstrations, magic show, children’s activities and more.

Explore the Wilson Hills Trail The Turtle-Flambeau Scenic Waters Area in Iron County offers five trails designated for hiking; there are also many miles of old logging roads if you care to explore the backcountry.
The Hidden Rivers Nature Trail is a 2-mile interpretive trail located off Fisherman’s Landing Road. The following trails accommodate both hiking and biking pursuits: Big Island Trail, Deadhorse Trail, Wilson Hills Trails and Little Turtle Trail are hunter/walking trails that are great for hiking any time of year. Little Turtle Trail is also a favorite of bird watchers. Wilson Hills Trail offers 5.5 miles of maintained trail in two segments between Wilson Lake and the Bonies Mound area of the Turtle-Flambeau Flowage. To access the trails, from County Highway FF, go south on Popko Circle East approximately 3.6 miles to Wilson Lake Road East. Take Wilson Lake Road East 1.1 miles to a woods road, bearing south (under the power line). There are several access points along the woods trail. The trail is mowed every 3-5 years. For more hiking, biking and paddling opportunities in Iron County, including the other four hiking trails mentioned above, pick up a copy of Iron County’s Active LiFestyle booklet available at local chambers of commerce offices.

Beef-A-Rama in Minocqua
roast of 20 pounds! The kids’ one-mile race starts at 8:15am and the 5K and 10K participants set off at 9am.
(MINOCQUA) – Minocqua’s famous Beef-A-Rama returns for the 49th year to downtown Minocqua on Saturday, Sept. 28. It features a spirited roast beef cook-off, fabulous feasting on beef sandwiches, live music, a run/walk, kids race, craft show and more. A street dance in downtown Minocqua on Friday night precedes Saturday’s many festivities scheduled from 9am to 8pm.
Torpy Park is the site for the arts & craft show and the Minocqua Lions’ beer and corn tent. The Rotary Club’s beer garden will be on Chicago Street. The Kids Korral in the downtown includes live performance in the morning, petting zoo, face painting, pumpkin decorating and games. To accommodate the festival folks and shoppers, Main Street (Oneida Avenue) will be closed to vehicles from 7am to 4pm. There will be a free shuttle service from 7am to 8pm with stops at Burger King, Boardwalk Shops, Parking Lot E, United Methodist Church of the Pines (latter two downtown) and Island City Lanes.
Come early Saturday morning the grill masters will be on the Island of Minocqua, setting up their “kitchens,” decorating them with unique themes, prepping their roasts and wondering if they are going to bring home the bacon – that is the top prize in their division. As the 120 or so roasts slo-owly cook to perfection, spectators pepper the chefs with questions: what are your secret ingredients, do you favor a wet or dry rub, and can I get a taste? Over at Veterans Park, runners and walkers of all ages and abilities are getting ready for the Rotary Club’s Rump Roast Run. The top male and female in the 5K and 10K get a unique prize: a beef
To slack the early hunger pangs, head over to Torpy Park and Chicago Street where they will begin serving beef sandwiches at noon. The Lincoln Boys and Under Water People will be playing on the main stage at Torpy Park. Over on Chicago Street, enjoy the music of Mama’s Little Hippies and Oil Can Harry. “Grillogists” Mad Dog and Merrill will be showing off their grill skills downtown and also at the Farmer’s Market where there’s a Veggie Rama 8am to 1pm. The highlight of the festivities comes at 2:15pm when the famous “Parade of Beef” – with chefs and their teams in costumes and with mini-floats – make their way down Main Street. The thousands of people packed along the parade route break out in applause as they continue to Torpy Park. There the many volunteers slice, stack and serve beef sandwiches. In all, more than a thousand pounds of beef is consumed by the hungry masses!

WOODRUFF
It’s Sharp – Just Axe a Lumberjack The logging of northern forests is a significant part of Wisconsin’s history. At Scheer’s Lumberjack Shows in Woodruff and Hayward visitors can learn about the logging history of the state and see modern-day lumberjacks compete in events that were part of the competitions held during that era.
World class athletes compete in 10 different lumberjack events.
Logging was difficult work and several of the events visitors will see at the show demonstrate just how dangerous the activity could be. Not surprisingly, the two most dangerous events of the show include swinging an axe. Axes used in Scheer’s Lumberjack Show, and in all lumberjack competitions, aren’t purchased at a local hardware store. Axes preferred by the professional competitors are made in New Zealand or Australia. When asked why his chopping axe had to make such a long journey to get into his hands, Sam Fenton, manager of Scheer’s Lumberjack Show and a competitor in the underhand chop event at the Lumberjack World Championships, responds – “Sharp!” The axe has to be extremely sharp and able to hold an edge. Sam explains that it costs about $100 to get his axe sharpened and after it’s done he could use it to shave his face – really. Lumberjacks combine that edge with physical strength in two of the events featured in Scheer’s Lumberjack Shows. In the Underhand Chop the lumberjack stands on top of a platform called a log dog and straddles a 12” aspen log between his legs. He then chops the log in half with swings of the axe, being very careful to avoid his feet and legs. Accuracy prevents him from losing a toe and upper body strength will make him a winner.
Kids Matinees Kids cross-cut saw with the lumberjacks & get a free souvenir – a great tradition at Fred Scheer’s Lumberjack Shows.

The Spring Board Chop is an interesting event that also requires an accurate swing of the axe. It demonstrates the primitive method of climbing a tree that was used to get above the fanning root system at the butt. Using his axe, the lumberjack notches a vertical standing log and wedges a board into the notch. The lumberjack then climbs up onto the board and chops a vertical-standing log in half. This is very dangerous because the lumberjack is chopping six feet in the air on a very narrow board. Strength, accuracy and balance combine to prevent an accident and make the lumberjack a winner. These and eight other events are featured in Scheer’s Lumberjack Shows in Woodruff and Hayward. The show is educational and combines athleticism with comedy -- a great family adventure. 800-353-4511 • 5 Star Marketing & Distribution • 5StarMandD.com

Giraffe Feeding Now Open
Thank you for letting my son Waylon feed “Teeke.” Best $5 I’ve ever spent. He’s only 22 months old and he hasn’t stopped talking about the giraffe since July 4th when we were at your zoo.
For the first time ever at Wildwood Wildlife Park, you can hand-feed the new reticulated giraffes. You get an incredible view as the world’s tallest animals lean down to nibble fresh veggies out of your hand. For a $5 fee, you’ll receive a serving of tasty giraffe treats. It’s an experience you won’t forget. “The kids are going to go crazy,” Judy Domaszek, Wildwood Wildlife Park Zoo Director said when describing the experience with that long eighteen to twenty inch tongue taking food right out of their hands. It’s a fun way to really connect people to nature.”
Zoo of the Northwoods 2nd Largest Zoo in Wisconsin!
Everyday is an amazing day at the Wildwood Wildlife Park where you experience up close and personal encounters with handfeeding Whitetail deer, camel, aoudad, llama, pig and goat. Choose either an 18-mile or the 36-mile route on paved roads. Registration begins at 8am (coffee, juice & cookies available), and the riders will leave at 9:20am from Don Burnside Park located off County A. The route goes through downtown Three Lakes and continues on Highway 32 past many of the 28 lakes on the Three Lakes Chain of Lakes. As riders continue their journey, they will find themselves in the beautiful Nicolet National Forest surrounded by lakes and forest as they follow rolling hills and winding roads. There’s a planned break for all at the 9-mile mark. Those on the shorter route will then head back to Burnside Park. It Takes A Village
plifies the varied talents and interests of Hayward’s residents as well as its visitors.
At Scheer’s Lumberjack Village, located on Hwy. B, 1/2-mile east of Hayward, a talented and diverse team of individuals coordinates efforts to provide guests with hours of fun at one location. The Lumberjack Village, owned by Fred Scheer is the venue for his Lumberjack Shows, a quintessential northern Wisconsin attraction since 1981.
Though Mr. Scheer has a high energy level, he does not personally manage all the shops and amenities at the Lumberjack Village. Those who do, bring an even broader collection of interests and talents to the team. Linda Fenton, owner of the Namekagon Cone ice cream shop located in the Lumberjack Village, was the Iditarod’s Teacher on the Trail in 2013. Sue Scheer, owner of Mainstream Boutique in the Lumberjack Village, serves the world’s cross-country skiing community as the president of the American Birkebeiner board. And what would northern Wisconsin be without a professional chainsaw carving artist? Peter Thoreson displays and sells his rustic carvings right at the Lumberjack Village; you’ll notice them when you pull into the parking lot on Hwy. B.
Here a visitor can watch world-class athletes perform 10 of the same events that are part of the Lumberjack World Championships. An elite skier, world champion log roller and boom runner, and inline skate and mountain bike enthusiast, Fred Scheer exem-
The most popular professional in the Lumberjack Village this summer is Corey Elliott, chef at the newly opened River Deck Restaurant. Corey holds a culinary arts degree from the Art Institute International of Minnesota and has earned a reputation locally for his innovative and eclectic cuisine. The restaurant’s everyday menu features unique and flavorful salads and sandwiches that combine fresh ingredients and local products. Every evening the restaurant features two dinner entrees in addition to its regular menu. When in Hayward, plan a stop at Scheer’s Lumberjack Village where you can experience fabulous food at the River Deck, followed by Wisconsin’s best ice cream at the Namekagon Cone. Ladies can browse in the Mainstream Boutique while the guys check out the chainsaw carvings. And everyone will enjoy world-class entertainment at a Lumberjack Show and a round of golf at the Lumberjack Village Mini-Golf. 800-353-4511 • 5 Star Marketing & Distribution • 5StarMandD.com

Museum Caters to Children (EAGLE RIVER) – Sometimes children need a special place all their own -- even while on vacation. Filling that need in numerous ways is the Northwoods Children’s Museum in Eagle River. The museum also has an art center and a seasonal exhibit area, including “Turkey & Traditions” in November and a holiday theme in December. Children with special needs and their family have their own evening at the museum. Each event is free due to the generous sponsorships of the Machon Agency in Three Lakes and Northland Pines High School. Each is led by special education professionals and includes a meal, fun activities and the opportunity to network with other families. Held from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Reservations required for planning purposes at 715-479-4623. The Northwoods Children’s Museum is open year around, but with a reduced schedule from Labor Day to Memorial Day: TuesdayFriday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Sunday, noon to 5 p.m. In the summer, the schedule is Monday-Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, noon to 5 p.m. Many play items in the museum are also carried in their Discovery Store, so you can buy toys, puzzles, books and craft items for home or at the cabin.
