Plan your fall escape to the Northwoods

The Northwoods from early October to mid-month is ablaze with fall colors, sunny days and evenings crisp and cool. There are still a few community festivals and numerous craft fairs to harvest in October with November days on the cusp of winter outdoor fun.

Dean S. Acheson

Although we understand the reason (air pollution) for not burning leaves in the fall, we miss the smell that used to hitchhike on the evening breezes. Thusly, on Friday night we’ll plunk ourselves next to the campfire in the backyard and watch the embers dance and sparkle in the gathering dark and remember to douse the fire with plenty of water before retiring! Saturday morning beckons us to rise early as the rays of the sun have already painted the treetops. We load up the SUV, attach the bikes and head out for a day trip. Mountain biking has grown to be a very popular sport in the Northwoods, but we aren’t mountain bikers. A paved bike trail is our thing, and we too can enjoy being

surrounded by gorgeous fall colors as the trail weaves and dips into the woods with vigor. Pedaling requires occasional energy renewals, and we find it’s ample reason to stop at a roadhouse after a long ride for a burger and our favorite craft beer. The apple orchards are too far away and the pumpkins heavy so come Sunday it’s back into the SUV minus the bikes as we go in search of red apples for pie making and golden pumpkins to decorate the front lawn. At the pumpkin patch, the grandchild picks out his pumpkin while this scribbler and grown son eye the biggest and meanest pumpkin they think they can stuff in back of the SUV. The wallet lighter by a few ten spots, the SUV stuffed with the monster pumpkin we managed to shoehorn in, and the day shaping up to be a pretty nice outing, we take the long way home to enjoy the fall colors. Later, there are apples to peel, pumpkins to move (now where did that forklift go!), and blessings to count for living in the land they call “Up North.”

Bring the family to ‘Christmas at the Fort’

DANBURY – Give a Christmas present to the entire family this year with a trip to the Forts Folle Avoine Historical Park, which is hosting “Christmas at the Fort” the weekend of Dec. 6 & 7 and again Saturday, Dec. 13. The kids will enjoy the outing, learn about a period of Wisconsin’s history that dates to the early 1800s, and possibly reward you back, Mom and Dad, with a nifty present they pick up from the Elves’ Shop! Admission is free to the Fort, with nominal charges for sleigh rides, face painting, Elves Store, and food and beverage. The 2014 theme is “A Northwoods Noel,” an entirely appropriate one as the Visitor Center, buildings and groups will be richly decorated with wreaths, hundreds and hundreds of sparkling mini-lights, and if Mother Nature cooperates, pristine snow on the ground.

Inside an authentic teepee waits Angelique, the knowledgeable and entertaining storyteller who will educate you about America’s fur trade era. Over at the blacksmith shop, the smithy will fire up the forge and demonstrate the making of iron tools and horseshoes. Santa & Mrs. Claus will be waiting for the children in the Karlsborg Schoolhouse where they can tell Santa their Christmas wishes. The Gift Shop is prepped for Christmas and offers a splendid choice of gifts, including handcrafted jewelry, pottery, art work, trade knives, Christmas ornaments, books about the fur trade, Native American crafts and a variety of nature related topics. At the Elves Store children can select affordable gifts for family and friends with the assistance of patient clerks ready to assist with selections. For more information, visit theforts.org or call 715-866-8890. The Fort is located at 8500 County Road U near Danbury.

On those two Saturdays, The Fort will be open from 11am to 6pm. Sunday hours are 11am to 4pm. Be sure to bid for items featured in the silent auction (Dec. 6 & 7 only) inside the Visitor Center. Items may be picked up Dec. 13 or Wednesday through Friday 10am to 3pm. Or call for other arrangements, 715-866-8890. Sled dog racers get a jump on winter PEARSON – We’re going to let you in a secret. Sled dogs and their human handlers don’t need snow to have a fun time racing! Each fall the Dirty Dog Dryland Derby -- featuring some of the best sled dog teams in the region -- takes place on the Ma-Ka-JaWan Boy Scout Reservation in Pearson north of Antigo.

It’s organized by the Wisconsin Trailblazers with the Langlade County Sled Dog Club and the boy scouts. This year’s ninth annual running takes place Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 25 & 26. There are two general classes: Class A -- professional event with trophies and cash prizes; and Class B -- sportsmen with trophies. All individual classes are International Sled Dog Racing Association sanctioned, except for Junior events. Races start at 9am Saturday and 8am Sunday. The number of dogs in harness and type of rig determines the individual classes. You’ll see teams with bikes, scooters, carts and even dogs partnered with running mushers. Routes are either 1.5 or 2.5 miles in length. The public is invited to watch and to visit with drivers. You are asked to leave your personal dog at home however as they become a distraction to teams preparing to race. There is free admission and parking and home-cooked food available for purchase at the race site. For the latest updates on this race, and information on other races scheduled, visit witrailblazers.org or call Beth Castaldi at 715882-8080. Newbold Town Trail is an easy family ride NEWBOLD – Gather up the kids or your trail partner and head to the Town of Newbold Hike & Bike Trail for a relaxing bicycle ride on one or more of the four road loops on the east side of the Wisconsin River. Even in mid to late October, you can catch some tree color along the river. The main trailhead is at the Newbold town garage, corner of River Road and Bridge Road. The trail is packed gravel, level and easy for young riders. Maps of the bicycle routes can be found in a box mounted on the east side of the Newbold town shop. This is the “launching point” for several routes of various lengths. Directions: From Hwy. 47 at McNaughton take Bridge Road east over the Wisconsin River to River Road. The main trail is an 8.1-mile roaddedicated and packed gravel trail from McNaughton to Rhinelander. One suggested route is north on River Road, which is the first gravel road after you cross the Wisconsin River and before the town garage. This intersects South Shore Road. At this intersection turn left or west. It is a short distance to the wooded bridge and a town park with restrooms and picnic area on the Wisconsin River. It’s a popular place to launch canoes. There are several retail and dining establishments along the route, many of which provide vehicle parking for bicyclists. If you are looking for another way to spend a quiet afternoon, perhaps a scenic canoe trip on the Wisconsin River during the late fall colors is just the ticket. Many people enjoy paddling from the Newbold Memorial Park, located at the wooden bridge on River Road, down to the new Fredrich’s Landing on Bridge Road. Ample parking is provided at both locations. A slow, relaxing trip on this section of the Wisconsin River can take about four hours. This time of the year, the water is chilly so make sure you wear a life jacket in case the canoe tips over.

Wildlife Center announces photo contest deadline MINOCQUA – The Northwoods Wildlife Center (NWC) in Minocqua invites amateur photographers to enter their favorite photos in the NWC’s annual Photo Contest, which will culminate in an evening gala Saturday, Feb. 22 at the Campanile Center for the Arts in Minocqua. The contest has four categories: North American Wildlife, Nature, Pets, and Youth. The Wildlife category offers a $100 first prize; the others have $50 first place prizes. Photos with the top four votes in the Wildlife category will be eligible for the Artist of the Year designation. Entry fee is $10 per photo. This contest is for amateur photographers. Though they may be accomplished photographers, amateurs are classified as those who do not make more than 25% of their annual income through photography. The entry deadline is Feb. 19, either postmarked by that date or brought to the center. Entries must meet other criteria, such as size and matting, so be sure to check northwoodswildlifecenter.com for complete contest rules. E-mail the center at general@northwoodswildlifecenter.org with any questions. Entries will be showcased and ballots cast by

the public during the Photo Gala, from 6-8 p.m, Feb. 22 at the Campanile Center for the Arts. A panel of judges makes the final determination of the Wildlife category. Proceeds benefit the Northwoods Wildlife Center, whose mission is to treat and rehabilitate sick and injured wildlife for successful release back into the wild. Part of their core values is to educate the public about wildlife and the important roles they play in the world that we live in. On average each year the not-for-profit center takes in between 700 and 1,000 mammals, birds, reptiles and the occasional amphibian for treatment and care or transport when necessary. They also sponsor tours of the facility and hold wildlife-related education classes for families – some 30,000 people annually who get a better understanding of wildlife and their habitats.

Explore Flambeau River State Forest’s Special Places WINTER -- The Flambeau River State Forest was officially established in 1930 and for more than 80 years, it’s been sought out by campers, boaters, hikers, fishermen, hunters, photographers and anyone else who loves outdoor beauty. The 90,000-acre forest lies mostly within Sawyer County. The North and South Forks of the Flambeau River join within the park, offering over 75 miles of mostly undeveloped river. Of special note are three places of splendid scenery and recreational opportunities that await your next visit. For more information about

the forest, call the forest headquarters in Winter at (715) 332-5271. Little Falls/Slough Gundry Bring along a picnic lunch, fishing poles and camera as you venture into this area. You’ll hear the roaring rapids long before you arrive at the river’s edge. Huge boulders split the rushing water and elegant pines on the banks tower over everything. This area is located in the far southeastern part of the state park off Highway M. No glass bottles are allowed in this area. Sobieski Flowage This area was a former cranberry farm that lay dormant for many years. After the State of Wisconsin purchased the land, many hands set to work rejuvenating it to a working medium size flowage that now provides a feeding area for waterfowl, nesting habitat (the former cranberry beds) and several miles of hunter/hiker trails. This scenic area is just south of Little Falls/Slough Gundry. Bass Lake Bass Lake was designated a wilderness lake nearly a quarter century ago in order to protect its fragile beauty. No camping, no motorized vehicles or motorized boats (and no overnight mooring of boats) ensure that this 94-acre lake and its surroundings are protected for generations to come. Fishing opportunities are a big plus, too. Bass Lake Wilderness Area is on the far eastern side of the state park. From the intersection of Highways W and M, take Tower Hills Road north. Bass Lake Road is to the right off Tower Hills Road.

Special speaker set for Wolf Awareness Week MANITOWISH WATERS – The North Lakeland Discovery Center, in collaboration with the Timber Wolf Alliance (TWA), will celebrate National Wolf Awareness Week Oct. 12-18. “Wolf Awareness Week, held during the third week of October, is a time when organizations around the country work together to get out information on this charismatic and often misunderstood species,” according to the Discovery Center website. Dr. Erik Olson, assistant professor of Natural Resources at Northland College in Ashland, will give a presentation on “Wolf Management and Ecology in the Great Lakes” on Wednesday, Oct. 14, 5-7pm at the Discovery Center. The presentation is part of the center’s ongoing “Nibbles N’ Knowledge” series. Cash bar and complimentary appetizers from 5-6pm, program from 6-7pm. Cost is $10 for members, $13 for others.

surrounded by birch trees on a knoll with the ground covered by pristine snow.

The timber or gray wolf is an elusive animal, seldom seen by humans. Most sightings occur when the wolf crosses a highway or trail. The wolf stands about two and a half feet tall. Adult males weigh 75 pounds on the average, the female about 60 pounds. Adult males however can weigh as much as 100 pounds. A typical pack is about five animals.

In addition to events centered on Wolf Awareness Week, the Discovery Center hosts wolf howling trips into wolf territories in the greater Lakeland area as a means to survey their populations. They also sponsor trips to learn about wolf and coyote tracks, and how to differentiate between the two, as well as status and ecology of Wisconsin wolves.

Since 2008, TWA has been housed at the Discovery Center. Do you dare walk the halls of Evil Falls? EAGLE RIVER – You talk the talk, but can you walk the walk … through the halls of Evil Falls – House of Tormented Souls! Bring your best friend, your wife, your husband, your teddy bear – because you’ll want someone to hold onto during this haunted house experience at Eagle River. Open every Friday and Saturday in October, and also Saturday, Nov. 1, the “House of Tormented Souls” welcomes all who dare enter the 13 distinct areas within the haunted house, specifically designed to provide scares and frights based on lost or tormented souls in their environments! Marcus Dread resides at the House of Tormented Souls. His demented character searches out weak humans whose mind, body and spirit are unstable and their souls split from their physical being making them perfect prey. Helping The Soul Collector is his partner, Karena D. Cay. The soulless, forsaken dark

bride will do anything to help Marcus feed on the souls of those who enter Evil Falls. This is an indoor event so don’t let any rain scare you away. A large tent accommodates a concession stand and those waiting to enter. There is no minimum age but they won’t have a “kids matinee,” so use your own judgment on whether the kids can handle it. “We’ll have some creepy characters hanging around outside to help set the mood for those in the waiting line on busy nights,” said Karen Cropsey of Evil Falls – House of Tormented Souls. There will be on-site parking as well as additional overflow parking courtesy of Dollar General next door and Family Dollar across the street. Tickets available on-site only, no on-line sales. Hours are 7-10pm Oct. 3-4 and 7-11pm on other October dates and Nov. 1. For more information call 715-477-0808 or visit evilfalls.com. Evil House is located inside the arena at the site of Eagle Falls Adventure Golf and Laser Tag, 1040 E. Pine Street, between the Shell Station and Dollar General. Listen for the screams!

ATVing adventures start in Washburn County COUNTY-WIDE – More than 100 miles of ATV trails linking to an ever-growing Northwest Wisconsin ATV trail system makes Washburn County a premier ATV destination. Multiple loops throughout the county, linking to the Wild River Trail, create an ATV experience like no other. Ample ATV parking areas and access to lodging and restaurants make planning an ATV vacation easy. ATV trails open the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend and stay open through the winter. Fall is an especially enjoyable time to explore the area trails and take in the breathtaking fall colors. The county forest does allow limited motorized vehicle access on roads and trails within the forest. The Washburn County Forest is split into 31 integrated resource management units, each unit designated as open to motorized travel; open to motorized travel on designated roads and trails; or closed to all motorized travel. The county has 49,000 acres of forest open to motorized travel on all established roads and trails; 78,000 acres of forest with roads open to motorized travel on a two mile density, and 21,000 acres closed to all motorized travel. The Washburn County ATV Scenic Tour is now available for ATV enthusiasts to learn about over 35 points of interest located along the ATV system. If you have ever been riding on a trail and wondered what river you were passing by or what the giant fish along the trail represented, you’re in luck! The new tour highlights points such as those and many more including historical sites such as an old homestead site where you can see remnants of the foundations of the original buildings. Visit washburncounty. org for more information about the tour and for free trail maps.

MERCER – There will be no shortage of fishing tales told – and some new ones created – during the 2014 Mercer Muskie Madness Challenge on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 17 & 18. The Mercer Area Chamber of Commerce, The Turtle-Flambeau Flowage Association and Gateway Lodge & Resort are the tournament sponsors.

At least one team member must attend a rules briefing meeting either on Thursday night, Oct. 16 from 6-8pm or Friday morning, Oct.17 at 7am. The Thursday night attendees will have a chance to win some great prizes. Tournament fishing times are from 7am to 8pm Friday and from 7am to 5pm Saturday. A unique feature of this tournament, entering its third year, is that each team member (two per boat) may have two lines in the water using one artificial bait and one live bait! This evens out the odds for the less-than-experienced muskie angler. Last year, Chris Wallis recorded the tournament’s largest muskie at 49 inches. Tournament anglers can fish any of the following 10 designated lakes within the Turtle-Flambeau Flowage River System: Fisher Lake, Spider Lake, Oxbow Lake, Echo Lake, Grand Portage Lake, Pike Lake, Mercer Lake, Lake of the Falls, Trude Lake, and the Turtle-Flambeau Flowage. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three teams. A point system determines winners. Based on a full field of 60 teams, the first place prize payout will be $2,400. Each team that successfully catches
