Editor’sCOLUMN

Don’t let summer slip away

nightlife in the Northwoods.

Summer is in full swing and vacation is calling. And vacation’s kids are called “gataways,” “weekender” and “day-trip.” So bundle up the kids (before they have to go back to school) and think about cool lakes, fun festivals, and hot

There’s plenty of “wow” activities, including cruis’n’ the lakes on your personal watercraft or pontoon, zip line flying, and crunching the single-tracks with your mountain bike. And we have just touched the active possibilities for you and your family or best bud.

Dean S. Acheson

On the other side of the spectrum are the relaxing moments in front of the campfire, counting the number of shooting stars in an evening, floating down a river on a tube, visiting museums and historical sites, and just sleeping late with nary a care in the world. Unfortunately sleepyhead, nature’s alarm clocks (called birds) are early risers and love to chirp! This issue of Action magazine bridges late summer and early fall. There are weeks of warm weather in front of us – a few of those days in early August probably will be very warm. But we have literally thousands of lakes across the Northwoods to cool you off. September brings early harvest and with it you can do your own harvesting of fall festivals, some of them centered on the cranberry harvest. Speaking of harvest, early fall is excellent for catching walleyes, bass and panfish. Turn the pages and let’s get you going on trip ideas because your new favorite vacation spot is the land they call Up North!

Majestic trees frame ‘Assessor’s Trail’

FLORENCE – According to local folklore, the majestic hemlocks and hardwoods that frame Assessor’s Interpretive Trail in the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest was saved from the logger’s axe in the 1920s due to a tax assessor’s foresight and wisdom. The assessor, Ed Krueger, reportedly told the owner of the land he would increase the tax assessment if the tract of virgin timber were cut. Apparently, in those days, a tax increase ranked just behind a forest fire for being feared! The trail winds through majestic hemlocks and hardwoods for a deep-woods experience. As you walk this interpretive trail you’ll come upon the towering “Assessor White Pine,” named after the famed assessor.

Northwoods REGION

The trail is on the east end of Lost Lake adjacent to the Lost Lake Campground. Just a mile in length but stopping and reading the some 50 interpretive signs along the way will take at least an hour. But don’t hurry: there are fascinating cultural and natural details to learn in this outdoor classroom and you don’t want to marginalize this deep-woods experience. The trailhead is at the parking lot (see directions below). The trail transverses gently rolling terrain with benches for resting midway. One loop of the trail is wheelchair accessible. The trail connects to Ridge Trail. From Florence, take Hwy. 70 west for 15.5 miles to FR 2450. Turn left and go south 1 mile to FR 2156, then 3 miles southeast to the Lost Lake Campground entrance. Turn left and follow signs to the trailhead. Parking for approximately 6 vehicles.

Florence County Fair offers lots for families

The fair has something for everyone including exhibits by county residents, animals, horse pull, mud runs, great music all weekend, food, games, pie eating and cricket spitting contests, a magic and science show, a classic car show, cycle and tractor show and so much more! The U.P. Garden Tractor Pullers will be featured at 6pm Friday. The mud bog bog takes place at noon Saturday. The classic car and motorcycle show and draft horse pull are both on Sunday. There is a $5 admission fee for ages 13 and up. Children 12 and under are admitted free. The admission fee covers the entire fair. The county fair park is located at 5505 County Hwy. N, one-third mile south of U.S. 2 in Florence.

Get down and dirty at mud runs

AURORA – Ever since the Aurora Mud Runs’ inception in 1985, they have been drawing thousands of people to Aurora to watch trucks speed through the mud in a 180-foot long pit. The event draws more than 75 drivers from across the Midwest, with vehicles ranging from standard street trucks all the way up to 1,200-horsepower trucks. This year’s event will be Sunday, Aug. 6 at the George Weber Memorial Park. Gates for the public open at 10am. Vehicle registration begins at 7 a.m. Races start at noon.

The annual fundraiser raises money for a new hall to house the Aurora Homestead Rescue Squad unit. Rescue squad personnel will be serving food and drinks.

Welcome aboard the Lumberjack Steam Train LAONA -- The Lumberjack Steam Train in Laona is a memorable experience for the entire family, and is especially enjoyed by history buffs.

The fully restored 1916 Vulcan steam engine worked hard for the Connor Lumber and Land Company for decades, and it is still on the job pulling passenger cars and cabooses to the Camp 5 Museum Complex from the vintage depot on U.S. Hwy 8, just west of Laona.

Shop. The Choo Choo Hut Restaurant is handy for a meal. The Nature Center gives a good look at Northwoods wildlife and ecology, and later in the season, you can lose yourself in the corn maze.

Many visitors love the Fall Festival runs with views through the windows of the vintage train car of the gorgeous fall colors.

While there, you can visit the logging museum and hitch a ride with the Green Treasure Forest Tour that tells the story of sustainable logging.

After the last run of the summer season on Aug. 19, the fall runs begin on Sept. 2, with additional runs Sept. 9, 16, 23 and 30. Departure time is 11am with a train leaving every hour until the last run at 2pm. Cowboys will rob the train on Sept. 30. The reenactors will be wearing clothing from the Old West.

The petting zoo entertains the youngsters, but adults enjoy time there too. There is shopping and treats at the Cracker Barrel Gift

The USDA Forest Service manages the Argonne Experimental Forest, located in the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest, as a living laboratory to study methods for managing second-growth northern hardwoods. There are 17 designated stops along the nine study areas where hikers can view signs and learn more about northern hardwoods and forest cutting. From Hiles, take Hwy. 32 north 2 miles to Experimental Road (FR 2184). Turn right and go 1.5 miles north to Forest Road 3905. Turn right and go east 1/8 of a mile to the trailhead on the left.

Northwoods REGION

Then it’s time to find the Scott Lake Trail and Shelp Lake Trail. From Hiles, take Hwy. 32 north 2 miles to Experimental Road (FR 2184). Turn right and go north 3 miles to Scott Lake Road (FR 2183). Turn left and go west 2.5 miles to a small parking area on the right side. The walk will take you past a towering stand of white pines and hemlocks about 300 years old and follows the wetland around Scott Lake. The boardwalk to Shelp Lake is located on the north side of 2183. This short but winding trail takes you north through large, old hemlocks to a bog surrounding the lake, providing close-up views of bog plants. The bog and lake is a designated State Scientific Natural Area. Gray jays, black-barked woodpeckers and boreal chickadees can be found here.

Council Grounds State Park may become your favorite park

MERRILL – The 508-acre Council Grounds State Park just north of Merrill – itself known as “The City of Parks” – has an abundance of amenities that draws thousands of visitors season after season. In addition to the campground, there is a nice beach, interesting trails, asphalt roads for family biking, day picnic areas, playground, boat launch, shelters, handicapped accessible fishing trail/pier, and opportunities for canoeing, kayaking and fishing the Wisconsin River or the flowage (Lake Alexander) behind the dam. The campsites are large and the area heavily wooded. The Friends of Council Grounds State Park rents canoes, kayaks and paddleboards in season. There is also an adaptive kayak available for rental. Items can be rented at the park office when the office is open. Council Grounds is located just west of Merrill. From U.S. Highway 51, exit onto State Highway 64 (Main Street) and go west about 2 miles through downtown Merrill. Turn right on State Highway 107 (Grand Avenue) and go about 1.8 miles. Turn left on Council Grounds Drive and go about 0.5 mile to the park entrance station.

Crazy Daze at Merrill

MERRILL – Don’t miss the crazy deals and steals that Merrill merchants will offer during the 63rd annual Crazy Daze on Thursday, Aug. 10. The Merrill Area Chamber of Commerce sponsors the event. Two blocks of downtown will be blocked off for the sales, which will be going on throughout the day. Businesses will have different events throughout the city. Dorinda’s Dance Studio will have downtown performances at noon and 5pm. Other contests will be held on the center stage. Food and merchandise vendors will be located on Main Street by the courthouse. We didn’t have full details of the 2017 event when this issue went to press, but last year’s Crazy Daze included the Lions’ duck drop, Grandpa’s Farm, corn, hamburger and pie eating contests, bouncy house, and drum competition.

Underdown Recreation Area is a hidden gem

Late summer and early fall is a perfect time for hikers, bikers, campers and horseback riders to become acquainted with the Underdown Recreation Area. Known simply as the Underdown, it’s a 7,000-acre forest of pine, aspen and northern hardwoods owned and managed by Lincoln County. Dozens of small lakes dot the property. The Underdown Trail system includes 21 miles of marked bridle trails, mountain bike trails, snowmobile trails, and cross-country ski trails that loop around and through the Underdown region. Hikers and bicyclists can enjoy the numerous woods roads and trails found in this area. But caution ahead: sections of the bike trails are very challenging and are not for novice riders. One of the three segments of the Ice-Age Trail in Lincoln County traverses 6.1 miles diagonally across the Underdown. Another segment winds through 16.2 miles of Lincoln County Forest in the Harrison Hills area. These segments are very rugged and have many steep climbs, including Lookout Mountain, the highest point on the Ice Age Trail at 1,920 feet above sea level. The third segment is 4.8 miles long and follows the Wisconsin River through Newwood County Park. There are two fall events in 2017: Aug. 19 -- Thunderdown in the Underdown, which is a mountain bike race, and Aug. 26-27 -- Underdown Running Event.

Explore Marinette County by ATV/UTV Sprawling Marinette County – known for its breathtaking 14 major waterfalls – is also home to a network of wide, well-groomed, award-winning ATV/UTV trails that offer over 300 miles of riding pleasure. And, Marinette County’s forests total 230,000 acres, giving everyone room to roam. Most of the Marinette Trail System is open year round, with the exception of early spring when trails close to protect them from erosion. The majority of the county’s year-round ATV/UTV trails are located in the northern half of the county. Trails run from Lake Hilbert in the far northwestern corner of the county east to the Michigan border and south to the Peshtigo River State Forest. Trailhead locations: Three park-n-ride locations serve the north

end of the trail system: in the Town of Dunbar via Hwy. 8, north of Pembine via Hwy. 141 and Barlow Lake Road, and in Athelstane on Eagle River Road via County A. There are numerous park-n-ride locations in the southern portions of the county as well. Two popular locations are west of Crivitz: County W and Bushman Road and County W and Parkway Road. McClintock County Park, in the Town of Silver Cliff, offers both a park-n-ride location as well as an ATV accessible campground. No matter which loop or trail you ride, you won’t be disappointed. The system accesses county forestlands as well as a few of the county’s waterfalls. You’ll ride rolling hills, twisty trails, sandy flats and forest roads. You can choose to cover as much ground as possible, or pick a backcountry loop and explore it at a more leisurely pace.

McClintock Park on the west side of the trail system is a good place to start. Located just off Parkway Road (Cty I), this 320acre county park offers parking, 10 rustic campsites, a picnic area and three bridges over the Peshtigo River. The falls are a series of cascades under the bridges that connect smaller islands within the park. Stately pines frame hardwoods that are particularly colorful in autumn. ATVs are not permitted in the day use areas, however a parking lot for ATVs is available across the road from the day use area. Riders camping at the park can access hundreds of miles of ATV trails in Marinette and Florence counties. ATV riders who enjoy primitive camping can also take advantage of the county’s policy of allowing camping anywhere along the trail system in the county forest for up to two weeks at a time. Copper Culture State Park Visit the nation’s oldest ‘Copper Cemetery’

OCONTO -- The Copper Culture State Park features a Native American burial ground from the Copper Culture People, artifacts from which were dated to about 6,000 years ago. The site is in the city of Oconto with the burial area about 150 yards north of the Oconto River. The site is on the National Register of Historic Places. The 48-acre park was established after discovery of the artifacts in 1952. The burial ground of North America’s earliest metal users, the Oconto site is the oldest dated cemetery in eastern North America (and oldest Copper cemetery in the nation). A tour guide will walk you through the displays to help demonstrate the significance of this site, giving an early look at Archaic Indian lifestyle, an early trade network and first copper toolmakers in the country. A foot trail leads from the parking area to a stone monument at the location of the burial ground. The Oconto County Historical Society operates the Oconto Archaic Copper Museum, which is on the grounds. It is housed in a Belgian farmhouse built in 1924 by Charles Werrebroeck, the only example of this style of old-world architecture in the Oconto area. The museum is open 11:30am to 4:30pm Saturdays and Sundays, Memorial Day to Labor Day. Admission is free, although donations are appreciated. While at the park, visit the 15-acre short-grass prairie, have a picnic lunch, hike along the woodland paths or fish the nearby Oconto River. Use of the park grounds is free, no state vehicle admission sticker required. However, there are no campgrounds. Lodging is available in the greater Oconto area. For additional information, visit ocontoctyhistsoc.org. From U.S. Highway 41 south, exit State Highway 22. At the roundabout, turn right on Copper Culture Way. At the stop sign, turn left to enter the state park.

Minocqua Dragon Boat Festival awakens

The opening ceremony unfolds at 8am at Torpy Park with the official welcome, team introductions, “Dotting the Eye of the Dragon,” with an explanation about what will transpire. As noted on the event’s website about the Dotting the Eye ceremony: “The spirits of the dragon boats sleep in the mountains until they are awoken by Taoist priests during the Eye Dotting Ceremony. The Awakening of the Dragon ceremony is conducted to cleanse the area of competition, to bless the competitors and their boats, and to charge the boats and their crews with the Spirit of the Dragon and the Goddess of the Sea.” Races begin at 8:30am, with race heats leaving every 10 minutes. The final round will be at 3pm with awards to follow. Teams race 300 meters from east to west, finishing in front of Torpy Park’s swimming beach in an intense display of strength and teamwork. Awards will be presented for race winners and spirit awards, including best-dressed drummer, best-decorated tent, and highestpledge earner. There will be at least 22 teams racing. Each team consists of between 16 and 20 paddlers and one drummer. Teams are guaranteed a minimum of two races. Live music and food concessions on the upper level of Torpy Park and throughout downtown Minocqua will make this a favorite destination. Then there’s the “cow plop” contest, mechanical bull and beef eating contests to serve up more zaniness. Swinging an axe while standing on a springboard can be a scary event. -- Contributed photo

It’s sharp – just axe a lumberjack

WOODRUFF -- The logging of northern forests is a significant part of Wisconsin’s history. At Scheer’s Lumberjack Shows in Woodruff and Hayward visitors can learn about the logging history of the state and see current lumberjacks compete in events that were part of the competitions held during that era. Logging was difficult work and several of the events visitors will see at the show demonstrate just how dangerous the activity could be. Not surprisingly, the two most dangerous events of the show include swinging an axe.

Axes used in Scheer’s Lumberjack Show, and in all lumberjack competitions, aren’t purchased at a local hardware store. Axes preferred by the professional competitors are made in New Zealand or Australia. Ask a lumberjack in Scheer’s Lumberjack Show why his chopping axe had to make such a long journey to get into his hands, and he’ll respond – “SHARP.” The axe has to be extremely sharp and able to hold an edge. It costs about $100 to get an axe sharpened and after it’s done a guy could use it to shave his face – really. Lumberjacks combine that edge with physical strength in two of the events featured in Scheer’s Lumberjack Shows.

In the Underhand Chop the lumberjack stands on top of a platform called a log dog and straddles a 12” aspen log between his legs. He then chops the log in half with swings of the axe, being very careful to avoid his feet and legs. Accuracy prevents him from losing a toe and upper body strength will make him a winner. The Spring Board Chop is an interesting event that also requires an accurate swing of the axe. It demonstrates the primitive method of climbing a tree that was used to get above the fanning root system at the butt. Using his axe, the lumberjack notches a vertical standing log and wedges a board into the notch. The lumberjack then climbs up onto the board and chops a vertical-standing log in half. This is very dangerous because the lumberjack is chopping six feet in the air on a very narrow board. Strength, accuracy and balance combine to prevent an accident and make the lumberjack a winner. These and eight other events are featured in Scheer’s Lumberjack Shows in Woodruff and Hayward. The show is educational and combines athleticism with comedy -- a great family adventure.

Welcome to Tomahawk Fall Ride The 36th annual Tomahawk Fall Ride for MDA is upon us, and tens of thousands of bikes are rumbling through our cities, towns and countryside as riders take in the gorgeous scenery and enjoy the Northwoods hospitality. Tomahawk is the epicenter of the Sept. 14-17 Fall Ride, but communities 30, 50, even 75 miles away feel the positive economic impact of these riders. Granted, one can’t strap a sofa on the back of a bike, but restaurants, lodging facilities, taverns and various retail shops (especially bike shops) see a huge surge in business during Fall Ride. There’s also the turnover impact of those dollars as owners and staff of the businesses in turn spend money on other businesses, including furniture stores. Not to mention the number of non-profit groups that use proceeds from Fall Ride weekend to fund their mission. Chief among them is the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). In addition, many riders will return to the Northwoods for fishing, biking (pedal as well as motorized), kayaking, ATVing, snowmobiling, skiing, visiting attractions from zip lines to zoos – and bringing their families with them to experience the charm and magic of the Northwoods. Awaiting Fall Riders in 2017 are dozens of live musical performances from the downtown Tomahawk street dances, SARA Park, Bubba’s Big Party at Nokomis and taverns throughout the area. The Thunder Parade on Friday night brings out the lawn chairs and cameras as eager spectators line the parade route.

The Tomahawk VFW has taken on the downtown Tomahawk promotion, including a M*A*S*H theme, and we’re sure Fall Rider participants will be pleased with their efforts. Riders can demo Harley-Davidson’s 2018 line-up of bikes, tour one of the local HarleyDavidson manufacturing plants, go on Fun Runs sponsored by MDA, purchase tickets to win a new Harley, dine at food vendor booths and at restaurants, sit near a large bonfire in the Tomahawk Regional Chamber’s welcome party, and enjoy the camaraderie of like-minded riders. To the riders, we welcome you to the land they call Up North. Enjoy your stay and come back to visit us again. And ride safe!

Tomahawk veterans, merchants welcome riders Tomahawk Fall Ride for MDA, Tomahawk Veterans Fall Ride By Pat Haskin, For the Tomahawk VFW TOMAHAWK – Join the fun at the Tomahawk Veterans and MDA Fall Ride to Tomahawk, Sept. 14-17. The Tomahawk Veterans Fall Ride, in downtown Tomahawk, and the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA), which is responsible for activities at SARA Park in Tomahawk, have joined forces to help make 2017 a memorable and enjoyable experience for visitors and supporters of veterans and MDA.

2017 Fall Ride Guide

Tomahawk is located on the beautiful Wisconsin River with many tributaries leading to the wonderful lake structure created by dams. There are actually 26 dams on the Wisconsin River -many in this area.

3

The area’s winding roads around these waterways invite bikers of all ages to go touring. Those returning year after year continue to expand their riding area. It is not unusual to find bikers going into the Upper Michigan and then returning to the Friday evening Thunder Parade (last year saw nearly 1,000 bikes). Over at SARA Park, MDA hosts the Harley-Davidson demo rides and mobile museum that comes up from Milwaukee. They will have pins and T-shirts at SARA Park. The 2017 Tomahawk Veterans and MDA Fall Ride kicks off on Thursday, Sept. 14 at 8am at the Tomahawk Community Bank, at the end of Wisconsin Avenue, hosting the MASH blood drive.

After giving blood that meets the needs of veterans, accident victims, emergency surgeries and planned medical procedures, you are invited to the Wurl-Feind-Ingman Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2687 for a great breakfast to renew your energy. Historic Downtown Tomahawk will be reminiscent of the old TV show M*A*S*H. Brush up on your MASH and 1960s trivia. You will be challenged! There will be street dances in the downtown both Friday and Saturday evenings with well-known bands such as Johnny Wad, HYDE, Rising Phoenix, Bad Down and others lead-in singles or groups. There will be plenty of tasty homemade food provided by the local non-profit organizations. (The money they earn keeps them fluid for a year until the next Veterans/MDA Fall Ride.) Downtown you will find the MASH theme prevails with the MASH tent, Rosie’s Bar and The Swamp. Pick up your Tomahawk Veterans Fall Ride pins for both 2016 and 2017 at either Rosie’s or The Swamp. Never Forgotten Honor Flight folks will be on hand as will our local Wounded Warriors In Action Foundation from Phillips. Visit the MASH tent to find out about the many veteran support organizations. Haven’t you wondered what purpose they all serve? You will get a chance to visit with and rub shoulders with veterans who have served this vast country. A great percent of our visitors themselves are veterans. Our downtown merchants welcome you! We salute you! See you there!

2017 Fall Ride Guide

Go on a Fun Run Again this year, MDA invites you to go on one or more of their Fun Runs during the Fall Ride. It’s a great way to see the fall colors as you travel the scenic routes from Tomahawk, while checking out the local establishments.

Enjoy the lake view at Spirit Cove Tavern TOMAHAWK – Nestled on the scenic Spirit Flowage, the Spirit Cove Tavern welcomes Fall Ride participants and everyone else to experience the good food and drinks prepared by owners John and Michelle Hogan.

The number and routes had not been determined in time for our deadline, but the maps will be available for purchase at SARA Park at the MDA tent. There is no set time for departure. Riders can purchase as many maps as they’d like and ride at their own pace. For each stop visited, have it stamped on the Fun Run card. Once all stops have been stamped, the rider can then turn in the card to SARA Park and be entered to win some nice prizes.

They guarantee that you won’t leave hungry. They prepare all your favorites with homemade recipes, including fish fry, burgers, tenderloin and tacos. The hand-tossed pizza is made with homemade dough; the burgers and Poutine are fresh made. And you have to try the tenderloin tips with John’s amazing red wine gravy over rustic mashed potatoes. Sometimes you gotta go old school! They have a great Friday fish fry, and the grill is fired up on BBQ Saturdays with brisket, country ribs and burgers so delicious off the grill. Whether you have dining in mind or not, you can relax and enjoy the beautiful lakefront views from the bar. Spirit Cove is open Tuesday-Sunday, from noon to midnight. They are on ATV and snowmobile routes, and of course for those with boats, accessible by water. Located at W7788 E. Bilby Rd., Tomahawk; off County Road O; phone 715-453-2230.

Fall Ride for MDA gives hope to local families By a MDA spokesperson

helps them well into their adulthood. MDA summer camp gives them the courage to be independent and have confidence.

Now is a very promising time for MDA. We are seeing progress from the dollars that are raised and those supporting Tomahawk Fall Ride at SARA Park have a lot to do with that progress.

Educational Seminars- Kids are living longer, going to college and starting careers. These seminars coach them how to navigate higher education and the workforce as someone living with a disability.

There are two MDA offices in the state of Wisconsin. The MDA Green Bay office covers 39 different counties in Wisconsin and up into the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and serve over 800 clients living with muscular dystrophy, ALS (also known as Lou Gehrig’s), and other muscle debilitating diseases. Seventy-seven cents of every dollar goes directly to the clients we serve. SARA Park is the only location where 100% of the proceeds raised, goes to the Muscular Dystrophy Association. All proceeds of bike raffle tickets purchased at the MDA tent downtown, BP in Tomahawk, and at SARA Park go directly to MDA. The money that is raised for MDA at SARA Park stays local to Northern Central Wisconsin.

Support Groups -- MDA wants not only our clients to have support, but support for the families that love them too. Research -- MDA’s overall mission is to find treatments and cures. Really, that is what our clients and their families are hoping for too. Your donations are making a huge difference! In the past 10 months or so, for the first time ever, there have been three MDA funded FDA approved drugs for neuromuscular diseases. Two have been approved for Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) and one for Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). In the past 6 months, a second treatment for ALS was FDA approved.

Where does the money go? MDA care centers -- MDA clients are able to see a neurologist, pulmonologist, occupational therapist, physical therapist and equipment specialists all in one appointment. MDA Summer Camp -- For our kids living with muscular dystrophy or other muscle debilitating diseases this is known to be the best week of the year. Not only is it fun and a place where they can just be a kid -- it allows them to learn to advocate for themselves and their needs. What they experience and learn at camp,

View from top of Timm’s Hill is breathtaking OMEGA – An excellent place to take in the nature’s fall canopy of color is from the top of Timm’s Hill, the highest point (1,952 feet) in Wisconsin. Timm’s Hill is located within Timm’s Hill County Park and requires a final short climb by foot to reach its summit and the observation tower for a 30-mile view of the vast Northwoods.

2017 Fall Ride Guide

The entire area is heavily forested with northern hardwoods and is spectacular during the fall color season. But anytime during the year rewards you with a stunning view. From the summit, you can also see Bass Lake and Timm’s Lake. The park gate is open 7:30am to 9:30pm May through October. The park’s hiking trails includes Timm’s Hill National Ice Age Trail and a trail to the observation tower. They also connect to the Rib Lake Trails. The park has a boat landing, fishing pier, picnic tables, grills, shelter and vaulted toilets. Once there, consider stopping at High Point Village Resort. Enjoy morning coffee, lunch or evening meal at their Hill of Beans Restaurant. For more information about the resort, call owners Kathy or Lyle Blomberg at 715-767-5287 or visit highpointvillage.com. Here’s a Colorama route suggested by the Price County Tourism Department: Prentice / Ogema (25 miles round trip): Start your trip in the village of Prentice. Follow County C south where you will experience a breathtaking view of Timm’ s Hill. After spending time at Timm’s Hill County Park, take County C back to the intersection of Highway 86. ‘Pork in the Park’ Ribfest now serving thousands

15

MERRILL – Join the Merrill Area Chamber of Commerce for their fifth annual “Pork in the Park” Ribfest on Saturday, Sept. 16, from 11:30am to 4pm on the Merrill Area Recreation Center (MARC) grounds. This popular event is growing each year and drew more than 3,000 visitors last year! Come out and try all the different styles of ribs cooked by the grill masters in this fun – and very tasty – cook-off. Chamber CEO Debbe Kinsey reminds you to place a vote before 2pm to help select the People’s Choice Award recipient. Along with ribs they will have corn-on-the-cob, steak and chicken sandwiches, and ribbon fries. Ed and Sharon’s Wagon will be serving their famous cheese curds. Merrill Youth Hockey Association will be selling beer, soda and water. The craft and vendor sale is returning so you can stroll around for a bit of exercise and make room for more ribs! You can pick up a Pork in the Park T-shirt at the chamber office for $15 each. The chamber will also draw the winners of their raffle grills (yes, two!) at this event. Only 300 tickets ($20 each) are being sold, so they just might be all sold out by the time Pork in the Park rolls around. But if not, open your wallet and buy a ticket or two. First place prize is a Primo Grill XL Oval. Valued at $2,645, this cast iron workhorse is a charcoal grill. Second place prize is a Treager Pro Series 22 smoker style grill valued at $800. Third place prize is $250 in cash, and fourth place prize is a grill utensil/tool set. Proceeds from the raffle will benefit the community programs sponsored by the chamber. Veterans will fondly remember their names: “Log Slog,” “Triple Threat,” “Icy Hell,” and the “Lambeau Leap.”

BarronCOUNTY Great paddling found on Red Cedar River

There are numerous recreational opportunities throughout the rolling hills of Barron County, much of it found around its numerous lakes and rivers. A top producer of outdoor enjoyment is the famed Red Cedar River.

The headwaters of the Red Cedar is at Mikana where Red Cedar Lake drains its excess water through a small dam. The small pool below the dam holds a few bass and walleye, and as we’ve discovered over the years, some snags. The river flows south through Rice Lake, Cameron and Sand Creek on its journey to the Chippewa River west of Eau Claire.

Paddlers will discover several excellent landings courtesy of the county along the route. No camping is allowed at these landings, however. The county does have three county-owned campgrounds and there are several private campgrounds at Rice Lake, Cameron, Barron and Chetek areas. Overall the stretch of river from Mikana to Rice Lake is shallow:

Calendar of Events

Aug. 12 Rice Lake – Fly-In Celebration: Rice Lake Regional Airport. Aug. 12 Cameron – Classic Car Show: Pioneer Village Museum. Aug. 19-20 Turtle Lake – Moon Lake Threshing Bee: 7am to 5pm. Threshing, flea market, miniature stream train, and more. Aug. 19-20 Cameron – Old Fashioned Country Fair: Pioneer Village Museum. Sept. 8-10 Cameron – Bluegrass Festival: Pioneer Village Museum.

While the fishing can be good along the previous stretches, county officials say the next stretch is excellent for fishing. From Sawyer landing to Johnson landing is 3.8 miles long and a float of about 2 hours, depending on water levels. Deep holes situated along outside bends are good choices for fishermen. Other access points can be found at the “OO” landing, 4.7 miles and three hours south of Johnson; County “D” access to the County “I” landing, 2.7 miles or an 1.5 hours down the river; and finally, for the Barron County stretch, to the “A&I” landing,

They will be busy at the Moon Lake Threshing Bee

TURTLE LAKE – You can’t get any closer to the land this – the Moon Lake Threshermen’s Association’s 33rd annual Threshing Bee the weekend of Aug. 19-20, which will showcase steam powered machinery used by our farming ancestors. The event takes place at the George Sollman’s farm, five miles

south of Turtle Lake, 862 2-3/8 Street, Clayton. Steam threshing, stone flourmill, steamed powered sawmill, steam powered rock crushing and rope making are on the “work schedule” both days for the threshermen. A number of demonstrations include the lumber planing, lath mill, antique sewing machines, maple syrup cooking, and blacksmith shop. Saturday’s activities include a sawdust pile for kids, sanctioned pedal pull for kids and adults, slow tractor race at 2pm, followed by a parade, with music by The Badger Dutchmen band from noon to 3pm. Sunday will bring an antique and classic tractor pull starting at 11am, parade at 1:30pm, and more music, this time by the Little Falls Music Makers. The weekend includes train rides for kids, face painting, flea market, treasure hunt and a raffle. Company C 8th Wisconsin volunteers will have a Civil War encampment. There will be displays of antique tractors, cars and trucks, fire trucks, along with a large miniature farm display and more.

The Red Cedar enjoys a fine reputation for fishing; smallmouth bass and walleye are plentiful while northern pike and panfish will keep you occupied at other times. Great blue herons and eagles are frequent visitors to the river and an early morning or late evening float might reward you with the sight of a doe and its fawn drinking at water’s edge.

perfect for novices and for a leisurely trip. Paddlers will find the access point just behind the original 1884 log dam. A 3- to 4-hour trip of 7.4 miles takes you to the Red Barn landing. The next access/ exit point is 3.8 miles further south to the UW-Barron County Campus. The next stretch of 2.8 miles, and 1.5 hours, takes you to the Sawyer landing.

Crex Meadows features colonies of nesting herons, breeding eagles and osprey, sharp-tailed grouse and trumpeter swans, Karner blue butterflies and Blanding’s turtles as well as large concentrations of sandhill cranes, waterfowl and eagles in the fall. The Crex Meadows Visitor Center offers a number of educational events and workshops throughout the year. There are several hiking trails for visitors to enjoy. They vary in length, ranging from about 1 mile to 3.5 miles, but all are easy to walk. Stop in and get a trail map before you begin! The Hay Creek Hiking Tail is an out-and-back trip. The trail is approximately 1.5 miles long and winds through a forested area to the Hay Creek Flowage. Access is near the Crew Meadows Wildlife Education Center. An observation platform located at the south shore of the flowage affords you views of ducks, geese, herons and osprey. There’s an osprey nesting platform on the east end of the flowage. The Upper Phantom Cross Country Ski & Hiking Trail contains four loops totaling 3.7 miles. The loops are color-coded and a map of the trail system is located at the parking lot on East Refuge Road. A portion of the trail follows the Upper Phantom Flowage. Another parking lot is on the north end of the trail, off Main Dike Road. The Education Center sponsors any number of events both inside and outside during the year.

Fish Lake Wildlife Area Fish Lake Wildlife Area is a 14,000-acre property that is located about 5 miles south of Grantsburg off Highway 48/87. Much like Crex Meadows, visitors can hunt, trap, view wildlife, and participate in other outdoor recreational activities on Fish Lake. Also like Crex, Fish Lake has a 1,200-acre refuge that is a no-entry area (most of the time). Everywhere else on the property is open to recreational activities. Wildlife viewing is the most common use of the Fish Lake property, especially in the fall for viewing thousands of sandhill cranes and other migrating birds. Many people gather near the Grettum refuge to get a close look at this spectacular migration. The Education Center is located at the intersection of Hwys. F and D. It’s open seven days a week from March into early November. For more information, visit crexmeadows.org.

2017 Hayward Schedule

HAYWARD -- At Scheer’s Lumberjack Village, located on Hwy. B, one-half mile east of Hayward, a talented and diverse team of individuals coordinates efforts to provide guests with hours of fun at one location.

Though Fred Scheer has a high energy level, he does not personally manage all the shops and amenities at the Lumberjack Village. Those who do, bring an even broader collection of interests and talents to the team. Linda Fenton, owner of the Namekagon Cone ice cream shop located in the Lumberjack Village, was the Iditarod’s Teacher on the Trail in 2013. Sue Scheer, owner of Mainstream Boutique in the Lumberjack Village, serves the world’s cross-country skiing community as a member of the American Birkebeiner board. When one’s inner dinner bell rings, by far the most popular professional in the Lumberjack Village is Corey Elliott, chef at the River Deck Restaurant, located right next to the Lumberjack Show grandstand. Corey holds a culinary arts degree from the Art Institute International of Minnesota and has earned a reputation locally for his innovative and eclectic cuisine. The restaurant’s menu features unique and flavorful salads and sandwiches that combine fresh ingredients and local products. The menu expands in the evenings to include five dinner entrees and every week Corey creates a featured entrée to add to diners’ enjoyment. The restaurant offers cocktails, beer and a selection of fine wine. When in Hayward, plan a stop at Scheer’s Lumberjack Village where you can experience fabulous food at the River Deck, followed by Wisconsin’s best ice cream at the Namekagon Cone. Women can browse in the Mainstream Boutique. And everyone will enjoy world-class entertainment at a Lumberjack Show and a round of golf at the Lumberjack Village Mini-Golf.

Focus on the historic Ironwood Theatre

IRONWOOD – Ironwood has held onto its many historical buildings that framed its early years, each worthy of a visit. Chief among them is the famed Ironwood Theatre, which is almost restored to its original grandeur that has attracted generations of visitors from the silent film era to today’s productions. The Ironwood Theatre in downtown Ironwood was built as a vaudeville and silent movie palace in 1928 at a cost of $160,000 (equivalent of approximately $2 million today). The theater flourished during The Hollywood Golden Age of the 30s, 40s and 50s. The Ironwood Theatre was donated to the city in 1982 and was placed on the National Registry of Historic Places in 1985. Today, a nonprofit organization operates the theater and hosts numerous shows per year, such as recitals, music festivals, children’s plays and plays performed by the Gogebic Range Players. Noteworthy historic features of the theater include the Barton Organ, an original fixture from the 1928 opening still in operation and the restored Proscenium Mural on the theater’s ceiling. The theater can seat 732 patrons.

The nearly fully restored theater is located at 113 E. Aurora Street. For more information on the theater and upcoming performances, visit ironwoodtheatre.net or call 906-932-0618.

Downtown walking tours The Ironwood Chamber of Commerce invites you to take one of two self-guided tours of historical sites in Ironwood’s downtown district. The first tour of the commercial district highlights 12 sites, starting with the original Ironwood Historical Society building on McLeod Avenue and visiting Theatre North, the 1925 Sears Roebuck building and the 1892 railroad depot and ending at the Carnegie Library, built in 1901. The second tour of the residential district begins at the 1921 Memorial Building and includes stops at the 1895 Curry House and the 1925-built L.L. Wright High School and ends at the 1886 Church of the Transfiguration.

Discover the legend of Little Girl’s Point

GOGEBIC COUNTY – Whether you’re staying in Bessemer, Ironwood or one of the nearby communities, don’t miss an opportunity to visit one of the nicest stretches of sand beach in the western U.P. Little Girl’s Point offers legendary summer sunsets, and is a bit of a legend in itself.

making the first forays into the waves. Also available are swings, picnic tables, pavilion, grills and restrooms. For more information call 906-932-1913. Little Girl’s Point is located 18 miles north of Ironwood on County Road 505.

Western U.P. MICHIGAN

Legend has it that the “Point” is the site where an Ojibwa maiden became lost in the “Great Forest” on her wedding day. According to the legend, the daughter loved nature and exploring the land. Fearing that marriage would curtail her explorations, she ran away on the day of her wedding to Little Girl’s Point, and was never seen again. Famed explorer Henry Schoolcraft was the first translator of Ojibwa native legends and heard about the sad tale in the 1820s. He wrote the story down and “Leelinau, or the Lost Daughter, An Ojibwa Tale,” touches our hearts still today. Today, the “Point” offers more than romantic sunsets. It’s the site of a campground (30 sites) and day use park. The park is located on a high Lake Superior bluff with a nice level parking area with direct access to endless stretches of sand beach. You’ll see couples sunbathing, youngsters agate hunting, families chowing down at picnics, and dads with their small children
