Editor’s COLUMN Come alive with a trip to the Northwoods
Dean S. Acheson
Whether you’re up for a hot air balloon ride or a down to earth adventure, there are plenty of opportunities to do so this winter in the Great Northwoods.
crappies and 30-inch northern pike that hit last season. Instead, the Marcum camera revealed just a 3-inch perch pecking at the jig and waxie.
You might want to stop by the snowmobile races on the ice ovals, or do a bit of cross-country skiing and downhill skiing at any of several ski resorts found in the Northwoods. The thousands of miles of snowmobile trails are already humming with the sounds of sleds traveling through forests and across fields.
We pulled the tip-ups, packed up and headed to another nearby lake where we scored a meal of perch and bluegills.
Over at the snow tubing facilities, the excited cries are from the kids zipping down the hills. You may not be able to carve your initials in the trees, but you can carve up the ice with your skates either on ice-skating rinks on land or on the lake. Fishing of course is a hugely popular in the Northwoods, which boasts thousands of lakes. We got skunked on our first outing this year to our favorite ice fishing spot. No monster 14- and 16-inch

At the time of this writing we’re anxiously waiting word that it’s safe to travel across frozen Lake Superior to view the ice caves up in Bayfield County. Some years they are accessible; some years they are not. But when they are accessible, expect to be “wowed.” There are sleigh rides, sled dog rides, groomer rides, and more to experience. We have plenty of options for snowmobile or skiing vacations, lodging and packages. You can spend a day or an entire week exploring the trails, the food and hospitality, and the only regret you’ll have is leaving the land they call “Up North.”

EVENTS
Florence County -- more lakes than you can shake a jig stick at Countywide -- With 265 lakes and a few river flowages, there are many places to fish in Florence County. Ice fishing is a social activity aimed at curing cabin fever as well as catching some fish to eat. The most social form of this activity happens at ice fishing derbies. For a small entry fee, participants have the chance to win prizes while having fun with family and friends and meeting many new acquaintances.
Leff’s Fishing Derby The seventh annual Leff’s Fishing Derby will take place on Saturday, Feb. 17. Headquarters is Leff’s Bar. You can fish any Florence County waterbody for this event. Entry fee is $5 with 100% payout. Fishing begins at dawn and ends at 4:30pm. There will be raffles and food to enjoy. For more information, call 715528-5151. The Pete “Toad” Church Ice Fishing Derby, sponsored by the Aurora-Homestead Conservation Club, will be Saturday, Feb. 24 on the Pine River Flowage. Entry fee is $7 for adults, with kids 12 and under free entered free. Registration starts at 6am on the ice or pre-register at Bob’s Midland in Aurora. Fishing hours are 6am to 3:30pm. Cash prizes will be awarded, and food and soda will
be available. For more information, call 715-589-4400. Check ExploreFlorenceCounty.com events tab for the latest information. Tip-up fishing for northern pike is a relaxing family activity. Northern pike feed actively throughout the daylight hours, so you don’t have to brave the dark and cold. And once you get your tip-ups set, you can sit back and watch your tip-ups or throw a football or play a game of badminton or snow-golf on the ice. The best lakes in Florence County to catch northern pike through the ice are Patten Lake, Twin Falls Flowage, Fay Lake, Seidel Lake and Sea Lion Lake. If you are looking for a trophy pike, give Lake Ellwood or the Brule River Flowage a try. There aren’t as many fish per acre in these two lakes, but the fish there are monsters. If you are looking to jig for panfish, the better waters are the Spread Eagle Chain of Lakes, Sea Lion Lake, Twin Falls Flowage and Halsey Lake. Or if you prefer walleye, Lake Emily, Patten Lake and the Brule River Flowage are the hot spots through the ice. So call ahead to make sure the ice is thick enough and then pack up your ice fishing gear, shanty or bucket and come join the fun.

Discover Florence County’s snowmobile trails COUNTY-WIDE – There are nearly 180 miles of beautifully groomed Blue Ox Trail-Riders’ snowmobile trails -- and many more miles of snowmobile trails in the Nicolet National Forest -- waiting to be discovered in Florence County. The county is located in the “Wild Rivers Country” of the Northwoods. Florence County rests against the Wisconsin-Michigan border and boasts breathtaking scenery that includes rolling hills, endless miles of rivers and streams, towering pines and hardwoods. You would be hard pressed to discover an area as unspoiled as this. The Nicolet National Forest Trails vast network of nearly 500 miles of signed, groomed trails is complemented by hundreds of miles of unplowed National Forest roads, all available to the public.
NORTHWOODS region
As soon as a substantial snowfall occurs, members of the Blue Ox Trail-Riders (comprising snowmobile and ATAV members) spring into action. The club owns and operates four Bombardier groomers to cover the county. The trails are groomed at least twice a week except for the rail grade at 4-5 times a week. Plenty of lodging facilities and eateries can be found along the routes. Like other clubs, the Florence volunteer members are also out there in summer and fall brushing, signing, raising funds and much more to maintain and expand the trails. The trail system exists because of the cooperation and generosity of private landowners in allowing trails to cross their property. Please stay on the trails and be respectful of private lands! Consider becoming a member of the club. They host Thursday morning rides and Saturday family cookouts during the riding season. Rides start at 10 a.m. from the Resource Center in Florence, travel at moderate speed and usually are about 90 to 110 miles in length. There are stops along the way to view wildlife and scenic areas. A lunch stop is always on the schedule. For more information, contact the Wild Rivers Interpretive Center at 888-889-0049, florencewisconsinwi.com or go to blueoxtrailriders.org.

‘Braapfest’ enters 10th year of fun on the ice
NORTHWOODS region
SPRINGSTEAD – Kick back with a bunch of fellow sledheads at the 10th annual Braapfest on Feb. 23-24 sponsored by and hosted at Springstead Lake Lodge in Springstead. Braapfest’s roots are in riding and collecting vintage and classic snowmobiles, so you’ll see a lot of those at Braapfest. But a full range of modern sleds will be there also. While the antique and classic sleds are the backbone of the event, there will be other happenings, including live music. Flashback will begin playing at 8pm Friday with Refuse to Rust starting at 8pm Saturday, both inside the lodge. Beginning at 2pm Saturday, there will be drag and oval racing on the lake. New this year is slush pit racing. Entry to the festivities on the lake is free, as is the parking. As is tradition, sledders who arrive early that week go on social rides starting at 10am Wednesday. On Thursday they will ride late model sleds north for the day. On Friday, they will run vintage sleds to Price County for lunch and to visit some fun places. The “big day” on Saturday features a huge vintage ride (modern sleds welcomed, too) starting at 10am with a lunch stop included, then returning around 2pm for the races – including race sleds. The lodge is located at 1065N Springstead Road, Springstread. Visit springstreadlakelodge.net for updates and more details.

LINCOLN COUNTY XC skiing, snowshoeing offered on Treehaven trails TOMAHAWK – Those who strapped on their “big shoes” for the annual Treehaven Tromp snowshoe race at Treehaven were saddened to learn that the event will not be held in 2018. But that doesn’t mean they – and perhaps you -- shouldn’t forget that Treehaven has miles of cross-country skiing and snowshoeing trails still open to the public. Located between Tomahawk and Rhinelander, Treehaven is owned and operated by UW-Stevens Point College of Natural Resources Originally the Treehaven Tromp was a Braveheart Snowshoe Racing Series qualifier for the season-ending race, but rules were changed and any snowshoe race became a qualifier for the Series. That cut the number of participants at Treehaven Tromp by more than half, and the organizers thought it best to discontinue it.
NORTHWOODS region
We hope the Treehaven Tromp will someday return, but in the meantime there are 1,400 acres of “north country” forest and wild lands to explore via their trail system. Treehaven’s facilities rest on an ancient glacial ridge that overlooks forest and wetland habitat that hosts an abundance of wildlife species including osprey, deer, black bear, wolf, coyote and fisher.

ONEIDA COUNTY Rhinelander says: ‘Drop us a line’
RHINELANDER – Ice fishing season is here! Hodag Country is known as the Ice Fishing Capital of the World for good reason. Rhinelander has some great ice fishing lakes. Here’s a quick guide to experiencing worldclass ice fishing in Rhinelander. In the heart of Rhinelander, you’ll find Boom Lake, a flowage on the Wisconsin River that offers reliably productive fishing. Other good bets: Lake George (southeast of Rhinelander), Lake Julia (south of Rhinelander) and the Willow Flowage (west of Rhinelander). Visitors have access to all these lakes via public landings.
The 240-acre Lake Julia is one of the more popular fishing lakes in Hodag Country. Whether you’re looking for panfish, northern pike or walleye, Lake Julia caters to any angler. Public access can be found at a boat launch on the west side of the lake.

In the Woods! Answer the call of the forest... Did you know that nearly 75% of Phelps is national or state forest land? That’s a lot of woods to explore! Phelps boasts of 30 acres of land per resident, which means that when you are in the woods, you can find true peace and quiet. What a perfect setting for your Phelps adventure! In the spring months, the sunshine and warmer temperatures draw out the wildlife and wildflowers. The forest floors are covered in trilliums, forget-me-nots, and many other local flower species. If you tread lightly, you may even spot a fawn through the trees. Spring is a great time for bird-watching, as well. The mild temps of Northwoods summers are ideal for exploring the Nicolet National Forest and geocaching is an excellent way to get the whole family involved. There are hundreds of caches around the Phelps area, perfect for an hour or a whole day of treasure hunting. Or make it a weekend with rustic wilderness camping. Do you look forward to your fall color tour all year long? Each autumn, Mother Nature selects her brightest crayons and colors the Phelps landscape with blazing reds, yellows and oranges. With the many country roads and trails, Phelps is an ideal destination to enjoy this colorful season. Winter months bring a new view - snow-covered trees sparkling in the sun with a blanket of white beneath them. Welcome
aunting wails of loons echo across still waters. Tall pines whisper and bow gracefully with the breeze. Nearby, children are laughing and the whine of a fishing reel’s drag protesting the pull of a mighty muskie is just within earshot. And some say they can still hear the sound of a far-off train whistle blowing in the distance - - a ghostly remembrance of logging days gone by. It seems a bit like heaven, until suddenly, you realize that you have found yourself in Sayner/Star Lake. The two villages, linked by a lovely seven-mile drive along rustic Hwy N and Hwy K, comprise the Town of Plum Lake. Aside from the richness of the area’s natural wilderness, Sayner and Star Lake offer an abundance of fine restaurants, a challenging nine-hole golf course, housekeeping resorts, tennis courts, pristine lakes teeming with muskie, bass and walleye, groomed snowmobile and cross-country ski trails, paved bike trails, marked hiking trails, a fully-dressed library, historical museums, a quilting emporium, and unique retail shops complete with haute couture from Paris. Truly, finding yourself in Sayner/Star Lake will guarantee a vacation you’ll want to replicate over and over again.

Annual Events Draw Visitors to Sayner -Star Lake
the parade’s annual theme.
very first weekend in May, hundreds of rubber stamp enthusiasts throng the streets of Sayner. And this year, the 21st Annual Sayner Spring Stampede is expected to be the best Stampede in the event’s history.

Scheduled for May 4th & 5th, this year’s Stampede will provide a fun and energizing atmosphere that will include an expansive Rubber Stamp Convention and Used Stamp Sale where artists can exchange trading cards, register for a chance to win cash prizes, and participate in many Make & Take projects at exhibitors’ booths. Classes offered will provide instruction allowing participants to create art reflecting inspiring sentiments with beautiful imagery. “It’s wonderful to see the results when this group of creative people share their ideas and experience with one another,” says Jill Lemke, Stampede Coordinator. For more information about this popular event, please contact Jill Lemke at jaknjill2@frontier.com

GreenWeavers
Dedicated to the Art of Fashion
GreenWeavers Gift & Apparel offers women’s apparel from across the globe while providing personal fashion consulting Shopping for women’s apparel can be daunting, but at GreenWeavers, women find their quest for style can be fun, focused, and inspiring. “Most women have a vision of how they want to look, but finding the right clothing to define one’s own, unique style takes time, energy and patience,” says Wendy Kimbrell, GreenWeavers owner. “Because we’re all so uberbusy, many women simply don’t have time to explore the possibilities of their wardrobes. “At GreenWeavers, we do the work for them.” ‘The work’ begins with GreenWeavers personnel procuring unique fashion not offered in mainstream retail outlets or online. Often, GreenWeavers offers international apparel that has never been seen in the U.S. In addition, GreenWeavers is different than the average urban boutique in that it offers significantly more space and inventory. “Most urban boutiques are forced to pay astronomical rents for teeny spaces,” says Kimbrell. “Because of our location, GreenWeavers can offer a huge volume of designer clothing at lower prices.”
GreenWeavers offers a huge volume of designer clothing at lower prices. GreenWeavers Owner Wendy Kimbrell
Located in the center of town on Sayner’s Main Street, GreenWeavers has been providing fashion advice and apparel for 17 years. Boasting more than 3,000 sq. ft. of retail space, there is plenty of room for patrons to relax and take their time to find just the right ensembles. “Some women literally spend the entire day here,” Kimbrell laughs. “Even the men are happy about that, because we’re right across the street from The Sayner Pub, where husbands often pass the time watching a game, or shooting the breeze with the locals.” Everyday wear abounds at GreenWeavers, which provides pants, shirts, tunics, dresses, skirts and coats for women wishing to spruce up their work and play wardrobes. Special occasion apparel for reunions, parties, conventions and cruises is vast and varied. Artsy accessories like shoes, jewelry, scarves, shawls, handbags and hats are always available in abundance. And when it comes to wedding apparel, particularly for mothers of the bride or groom, GreenWeavers is ready to oblige. But looking good doesn’t have to be dictated by a special occasion, Kimbrell says. “Women should look fantastic wherever they go,” she says. “Because when you look good, you feel good.” Jeanne Schmidt, GreenWeavers assistant manager, agrees. “It’s especially rewarding when we achieve a particular style, or look, that a customer has been searching for but never has been quite able to find,” she says. “When that happens, women literally light up, and walk out of the store feeling fabulous, satisfied and empowered. Women should feel like that every day, wherever they go.” Schmidt adds that GreenWeavers sales associates always offer honest advice and never try to sell patrons clothing that does not look terrific on them. “It’s so important to find garments that accent the finer attributes of your body type,” she says. Sizes at GreenWeavers range from Extra Small to Double Extra Large, so women of all shapes and sizes can make the most out of what the boutique has to offer. And they do make the most of it. Chicago resident Loretta Pierson, for instance, travels from Chicago to GreenWeavers twice annually. “I’ve been shopping for my clothes at GreenWeavers for 14 years now, and I simply won’t buy clothes anyplace else,” Pierson says. “Why would I?”

Bike Trail maps are available at Sayner Mobil Express on Main Street, as well as several other Sayner businesses. The Vilas County Bike Trail offers 45 miles of paved forest trails exhuming scents of evergreen, wildflower, and loam. Six-feet wide with hills just challenging enough – you won’t have to walk your bike uphill! For a more rugged experience, head to Razorback Ridges. Here you will experience a different type of ride on 30 miles worth of mountain bike trails. Don’t have a bike? Not a problem. The Corner Store, located on Highway N in Sayner, has bikes to rent, and a full supply of Vilas

Says Corner Store owner Mary Debilzen, “We are your one-stop-shop for creating the perfect Northwoods Wisconsin experience.” The Corner Store has served residents, campers, and visitors in the surrounding area for over 70 years. Centrally located within the Northern Highland - American Legion State Forest and the Sayner-Star Lake area, The Corner Store is directly adjacent to over 40 miles of paved bike trails, 12 miles of mountain bike and cross-country ski trails, and is near many lakes and campgrounds. The Equestrian

Equipped with indoor and outdoor riding arenas, this lovely facility also provides a heated barn with several box stalls. Horse clinics and workshops are offered year-round. The facility is also available to rent.
The Golfer
Plum Lake Golf Course, located on the south shore of Plum Lake, offers a challenging nine-hole course rich with history and the sounds and fragrance of the best of the Northwoods. Founded in 1912, it is the oldest nine-hole golf course in Wisconsin, featuring a turn-of-the-century clubhouse, wrap-around porch, and a beautiful view of the lake.
On the Water
Swimming, boating and water sports opportunities abound in Sayner/Star Lake. For instance, Sayner’s Crystal Lake is located next to one of the cleanest, clearest, safest swimming beaches in the Midwest. At just under 90 acres in size and a maximum depth of 67 feet, the water is clear and deep. It’s a favorite for scuba divers as well as recreational swimmers. Crystal Lake beach is perfect for families of all ages. Come and picnic at the lovely picnic area next to the beach, or camp at several well-equipped campsites on the state-owned property. Before you head onto the water, check out the canoes and kayaks available for rent at Up North Traders, located on Main Street in Sayner. Kayaks and paddleboards are also available to rent at The Corner Store on Highway N. Next, you’ll need to choose from the wonderful lakes in the area to paddle on. Just refer to the map on pages 20 & 21 in this booklet. If a canoe or kayak is not your cup of tea, head over to The Star Lake Store where you can rent a boat and motor on a trailer. Errington’s Resort also has boats available for rent. And at Sayner’s Nortech Marine, patrons can choose from an array of boats to rent or buy. Nortech also offers full-service boat, pier and lift repair. More than just a Fish Story
nglers who cast their lines across the rich waters of Sayner/ Star Lake’s fishing lakes are likely to return to shore either with fish-filled live wells, or a trophy muskie large enough to mount. And when those anglers tell Sayner/Star Lake fish stories, they’re probably true.
“The combination of Plum Lake, Star Lake and Razorback Lake gives this community the best smallmouth fishing in America,” says Mike Errington, a licensed guide based in Star Lake. “And if you’re looking to catch a muskie, the population in the Irving, Ballard, and White Birch lake chain is just incredible. Encompassing 7,554 acres of water, Sayner and Star Lake are located in the headwaters of two drainage basins – the Manitowish River basin flowing to the west and the Wisconsin River basin flowing to the south. The two communities, which comprise the Town of Plum Lake, offer 31 boat landings, as well as 50 named and 95 unnamed lakes. Beneath the surface lies an abundance of smallmouth bass, walleye, crappie, bluegill, perch, northern pike, and of course, muskie. Several smaller streams are managed for trout, while Sayner’s Plum Creek receives the most attention from trout anglers.
Teeming with Fish
Partly due to the 18-inch minimum required to keep a smallmouth bass or walleye (a regulation imposed by the Department of Natural Resources to control crayfish populations in the Town of Plum Lake)
10
and partly due to the simple fact that smallmouth bass and walleye thrive in the cold water temperatures of Wisconsin’s Northwoods, the fisheries in the Town of Plum Lake are teeming with fish, and the smallmouths are getting “huge,” Errington says. “This summer, I caught 16 smallmouths over six pounds and two of those were over seven pounds,” he says. Aside from trophy muskies and smallmouths, which often appeal to more experienced anglers, Plum Lake’s fisheries also offer an abundance of panfish that most children and beginners can catch easily.
Bait and gear aplenty
In Sayner, anglers can stock up on bait and gear at Up North Traders, which rents boat motors, canoes, and kayaks. It also sells live bait, fishing tackle, and fishing licenses. Sayner’s The Corner Store also offers bait and fishing supplies, as well as kayak and paddleboard rentals. If you’re in Star Lake, the Star Lake Store is your destination for live bait and fishing licenses. And at Nortech Marine, take your pick of an array of boats to rent or buy, as well as a fully stocked supply of inboard and outboard motor parts. Nortech also offers repair services for boats and lifts, as well as storage facilities. “Sayner/Star Lake is a great place for a family fishing getaway,” says Errington. Now that’s one fish story you can count on.

Lake resident and owner of Hintz’s North Star Lodge, purchased and restored Star Lake’s original 90-year-old, one room schoolhouse and converted it into to a gallery/gift shop and museum.
Meanwhile, Friends of Star Lake, along with Hintz, replicated the town’s Old Milltown Depot which is directly adjacent to the Old Schoolhouse Gallery. The group recently relocated the Frederickson House -- the Star Lake home of two beloved sisters for nearly 100 years and an original logger’s home -- to become part of the historic community park. The Fredrickson house will serve as a museum illustrating Star Lake’s history and will be full of artifacts dating from 1895. The Depot serves as a museum dedicated to Star Lake’s railroad days. Just down the road is the picturesque Fredrickson Bait Shop, made from an old boxcar, which rests on the shores of Star Lake – just as it has since the area’s logging days. The bait shop has been an integral part of the Star Lake community and has been painted and photographed by many artists over the years. End your journey through history by having a memorable dinner at Hintz’s North Star Lodge. The Lodge on Star Lake was built in 189495 as a home and retreat for railroad and lumber company officials and guests. The Waldheim Room, where dinner is served, is one of the two remaining original buildings on the property.

Volunteers needed for crane count at Crex Meadows, elsewhere
NORTHWEST region
GRANTSBURG – Volunteers across the state will be listening for the prehistoric calls of sandhill cranes in the early morning hours come Saturday, April 14 as the Midwest Crane Count (sandhills mostly, but some whopping cranes) gets underway. The International Crane Foundation in Baraboo sponsors the event. Help volunteer to count cranes throughout wildlife areas in Burnett County on Saturday, April 14 from 5:30-7:30am. A mandatory training session for new and returning crane counters will be hosted at Crex Meadows State Wildlife Area on Friday, April 13 from 6-7 p.m. Pre-registration required, contact: Deb Larsen, dlarsen@hazelden. org or 715-483-9603. Tally sheets will be collected. A free breakfast will be served afterwards. The count helps researchers monitor the general population trend of sandhill cranes in the upper Midwest. Wisconsin has by far the largest number of sandhill cranes in the upper Midwest. The 2017 Midwest count tallied 11,072 birds in Wisconsin, making up the vast majority of the 12,377 counted in the six-state survey. Crex Meadows State Wildlife Area is a 30,000-acre property of wetlands, brush prairies, and forests scattered across a gently rolling landscape located in western Burnett County.

Rusk County Museum Complex appeals to all ages LADYSMITH – Looking for ideas for a family outing that is both fun and educational? You might want to visit the Rusk County Historical Society Museum at the county fairgrounds in Ladysmith.
Exhibits include an original wooden schoolhouse, replica pioneer log cabin, antique farming and logging equipment and even a NATO tank. The artifacts housed in the 10 buildings located on the museum complex number over 9,000 and are of interest to all ages. Before you get there, we have to take you back to the turn of the century. Rusk County was originally named Gates County when it was formed in 1901 from the northern portion of Chippewa County. The new county was named after Milwaukee land speculator, James L. Gates. The county was later renamed Rusk in 1905 to honor Jeremiah M. Rusk, a three-term governor of Wisconsin.

The Little Red School House continues to be the premier exhibit at the Museum. The Gates County Courthouse houses many artifacts from the years 1901-05. In addition to those two, the complex includes the museum offices and display building, logging and farm displays, horse drawn farm implements, teacher’s cabin, Weyerhaeuser Section car house, Glen Flora jailhouse, Jones LeCount building, log cabin, railroad artifacts, a 56-ton M 60A2 NATO tank, CCC camp marker, mining visitor center and a gazebo. The museum is open weekends only, Memorial Day through Labor Day, from 12:30-4:30pm, or by appointment: 715-415-3114. Admission is free although donations are certainly welcomed and help the society’s mission. The Rusk County Fairgrounds is just off Highway 8 in Ladysmith.

NORTHWEST region
NORDIC WOODS TRAIL-- Considered by many to be the best in the county. This Washburn County Forest trail meanders through a kettle moraine area that is both scenic and diverse. The trail is groomed and tracked periodically and can accommodate both the diagonal and skating skier. It is also the location for the Wilderness Loppet Race held the first weekend of January. There are two Adirondack shelters along the trail. There is a onemile novice trail at the south entry. Difficulty: beginner to advanced. Glide & Stride Ski Club maintains the trail. COLLEGE STREET PARK TRAIL -- Lighted trail located at the north end of College Street in Spooner. A delightful trail close in to town, featuring rolling hills, hardwoods and scenic variety. BEAVER BROOK TRAIL -- This scenic hiking trail is located south of Spooner off Cranberry Marsh Road.
