Critters are really friendly Up North

ot only are the folks in the great Northwoods friendly, the wildlife critters are too. But before we go further, we must point out that wildlife critters are just that, wild. Keep your distance both for your own safety and that of the wild animal you might encounter in the woods ... or on the road ... or on the ice. Which brings us to a mid-April day on a county road just southwest of Land O’ Lakes in Vilas County. A Saturday drive through the forest for the heck of it. And seeing a jake (young male turkey) wandering the shoulder of the road picking up tiny stones (gastroliths) to aid in its digestion. Wild turkeys are very skitterish, but this fella was all up for having his photo taken. So friendly indeed that when I exited the vehicle with the camera it trotted right up to me. Strange, because there were no houses in the vicinity that might indicate it was being fed by humans. More pictures; me lying on the westbound lane to shoot eye-level as the turkey pecked at more stones; a car approaching cautiously from over the hill before coming to a stop. The driver and I chatted – she was from the Canadian province of

Dean S. Acheson

Quebec en route by herself to the Yukon Territory! She was relieved to see that I was O.K. From her initial sighting, she saw a parked vehicle with its emergency signals on and a body lying on the road and feared the worst. Suddenly, Tom the Jake flew up on top of her car bringing laughter from both of us. After a few moments, it flew down and I bid Godspeed to the young lady. A day later: 10pm, out on the ice with my son and a pattern of six tip-downs set for crappies. The gushing of aerators keeping the pack ice away from the docks was the only sound. Then off to the distance the honking of geese searching for a place to set down carried on the soft wind. As the honking faded away, a black blob scurried into view past one row of tip-downs lit by portable lights. “Scott,” I whispered, “look over there!” It was a fat muskrat unaware of the humans perched on camp chairs. It came within 10 feet of us before it retreated into the inky darkness of night. Two days; two great memories in the land they call Up North!

Find peace, beauty and wilderness at Whisker Lake Wilderness Area

SPREAD EAGLE – Whisker Lake Wilderness Area is located on the border of the Wisconsin-Michigan border in northern Florence County, and at 7,500 acres is the second largest wilderness area in the state.

NORTHEAST Region

Its curious name was derived from the majestic pines near the shoreline of Whisker Lake. Timber cruisers from days gone by dubbed these pine “chin whiskers.” It was a miracle that even the wild fires of the early 1900s failed to “singe” these towering pines. Even today one would be hard pressed to find evidence of human activity, despite a network of hiking trails created for exploration. Those who choose to become close with nature in the wilderness area include hikers, hunters, fishermen, skiers, berry pickers, photographers and other nature lovers. Trout fishermen can find action on the area’s six small lakes and three major streams. Best bets are Edith Lake, Riley Lake, Wake-

field Creek and the Brule River. No motorized vehicles or even bicycles are allowed in the wilderness area, which is managed by the Forest Service. So come prepared! (Read this account from one intrepid wilderness backpacker, destiantonzerobars.com,) A map, compass, GPS unit and sufficient food and water should be in your backpack when you enter this wilderness area. You can pitch a tent anywhere you like, but practice “leave no trace behind.” Whisker Lake Wilderness Area is located off Hwy. 70, about 11 miles west of Florence. Access to the area is provided by Forest Road 2150, which heads north off Hwy. 70. For your protection, the Forest Service requests that you fill out a destination card at the trailhead before embarking on any trip, whether a day hike or a camping outing. To become more acquainted with this unique place, contact the Florence Wild Rivers Interpretive Center, 4793 Forestry Dr., Florence

Twin ports offer adventure, scenic beauty

ARINETTE – Marinette County has something for every outdoor enthusiast – 12,370 acres of lakes, 623 miles of trout streams, major rivers of Menominee, Peshtigo and Pike, and flowages of the Crivitz area. Among the ports of call to make this summer are the twin cities of Marinette on the Wisconsin side and Menominee on the Michigan side. Schedule a visit to the Marinette County Historical Museum, where you will find artifacts of the trading and logging eras. Exhibits include artifacts from the Menominee Indians and a miniature logging camp, representative of the many that dotted the great Northwoods more than a century ago.

NORTHEAST Region

Though another exhibit you will come to know the woman known as Queen Marinette, who ran a trading post along the Menominee River in the 19th Century. On display also are furniture and memorabilia from the home of Sen. Isaac Stephenson, a lumber baron, politician and philanthropist. Finally, be sure to visit the Evancheck log cabin, a restored reminder of farmstead in Marinette County a century ago. The museum, on Stephenson Island, is open 10am to 4:30pm Tuesday-Saturday, noon to 4 p.m. Sundays and holidays, closed Mondays. Tour groups by appointment. Call 715-732-0831 for details.

Pack a picnic lunch, take your bikes and spend some hours in the city parks in Marinette and Menominee. Red Arrow Park in Marinette has an extended beach, beautiful marshy area and nature trails, pavilion and grill area, making it one of Marinette’s most popular destinations. John Henes Park in Menominee is another good choice. The 45-acre reaction facility on Green Bay boosts 2,600 feet of water frontage. No need to pack a grill as the park has ample grills and picnic tables in addition to two shelters, pavilions, restrooms and a playground for youngsters to burn off excess energy. There is a swimming beach and the nature trails are well worth exploring. Or, consider Menominee Marina Park in Menominee’s Historical Waterfront District, a 5.7-acre park with 1,100 feet of waterfront, one of the largest marinas in the U.P., boat landing, restrooms, picnic tables, park benches and playground. After lunch it’s time to get the bikes out to explore the lakeshore and the neighborhoods. The last time we visited these twin cities, we tooled around and shopped the garage sales. Nothing was purchased that didn’t fit in the mini-packs on the bikes, but it was great fun and parking was a snap!

Oconto County has unlimited recreation opportunities

O

conto County will never run out of forest land or water for recreation – it boasts 150,000 acres of public land and over 300 lakes with unlimited opportunities for nature lovers, ATVers, sun worshipers, anglers, campers, hikers, bikers, and water skiers of all types. There are four established mountain bike trails, totaling nearly 100 miles; quiet country roads for bike touring; over 130 miles of ATV trails/routes; 10 miles of horse riding trails; and 18 parks ranging from road side stops to ones offering full amenities. By the way, Gillett lays claim to being the “ATV Capital of the World.”

Oconto County proudly preserves its history though the dedicated efforts of volunteers who maintain several museums. Be sure to visit the Beyer Historic Home & Museum Annex, 917 Park Ave., Oconto. Built by a wealthy family in the late 1870s, it was the first brick house built in the county. The furnishings, however, reflect the 1890s Victorian lifestyle. The annex contains Copper Culture artifacts, early city exhibits, carriages and even two electric cars.

Come face to face with an ancient creature: Lake sturgeon on the move

S

HAWANO – This trip suggestion is iffy ... as in “check before you go.” We outline the reason below.

NORTHEAST Region

A popular pastime for residents in Shawano is watching lake sturgeon travel to their spawning grounds on the Wolf River, including a site in the city. It’s considered one of the biggest sturgeon spawning shows on earth. The show is free and family-friendly as the fish come close to shore putting them within a few feet of the watching humans. Some of these monster fish weigh 150 Photo courtesy Shawano Country Chamber of Commerce to 200 pounds! If you time your trip just right, DNR fisheries crews may be doing a creel study. Once netted the sturgeon is brought to shore, measured, tagged and then return to the water for release. The spawning run of these ancient ones usually occurs mid-April to early May. The Northwoods has had a late spring, with snow still a foot or more deep as of this writing in the second week of April. That means the temperature of the river water may delay the sturgeon runs. Sturgeon spawning is dependent on water temperature and flow. During seasons when water flow is high and water temperatures rise slowly, spawning begins when water temperature reaches 53 degrees Fahrenheit. In contract, during seasons of low water flow and more rapid water temperature rise, spawning does not begin until water temperatures reach 58-59 degrees. They can be viewed from Sturgeon Park located on the Wolf River at the west end of Richmond Street adjacent to the Mountain Bay Trail and Shawano dam. Parking is available. The spawning run is usually over in about seven days, with the peak only two days at any given site. River flow and temperatures may alter this period of spawning. Your best bet is to call the sturgeon hotline number for recorded daily updates: 920-303-5444.

ERCER – We’re always struck by the beauty of the wild lupines seen along the roadsides in the great Northwoods. Hours are 8am to 1pm. They have mapped out several scenic routes (10, 15, 28 and 50 miles) that will take bicyclists on paved roads through rolling hills and past lakes, rivers, forests, wildlife and miles of blooming lupines throughout the southern part of Iron County. This year’s line-up includes the new 7.21-mile paved trail from Mercer to Manitowish Waters. Registration begins at 6:30am with a group start at 8am. The registration fee includes a tee, goodie bag, snacks, lunch coupon, water and SAG vehicle support. Pre-register online by May 11 for a price break. Straight Lake Wilderness State Park LUCK– Just 4.5 miles northeast of Luck is Straight Lake Wilderness State Park and Straight River Wildlife Area. The Straight River and the Ice Age National Scenic Trail meander through the 2,000-acre tract. It is one of the state’s newest state parks. The park embraces the 107-acre Straight Lake, three other flowages of 120 acres of water, and 850 acres of mature hardwood forest surrounded by a diverse complex of wetlands and grasslands. The state park is adjacent to the state wildlife area, providing nearly 3,500 acres at Straight Lake. The nearly 100-year-old trees and rare bird species that can be found throughout the park will impress visitors. It’s located within an area known as Tension Zone, an area botanists describe as a place where plant species overlap between northern boreal forest and southern prairie woodlands. Among the interesting glacial features in the “tunnel channel,” where the Straight River was funneled underground during the glacial melts. Though open now, the tunnel channel portion is quite evident. There are also two State Natural Areas in the park. State officials envision that much of the land will be used for silent sports including, fishing, hiking and non-motorized boating.

Motorized vehicles are not allowed; nor is biking. There are 10 rustic, walk-in campsites and a picnic area. No glass containers are allowed. All species hunting (deer, small game, upland and waterfowl) is allowed in the wildlife area, located north and northeast of the property, while the State Park portion accommodates only the 9-day gun deer and muzzleloader seasons. In addition to the Ice Age Trail that goes for six miles through the park, you may want to hike these three short trails in the park: Rainbow Lake Trail -- This challenging 1-mile loop trail provides excellent views of Rainbow Lake and the surrounding landscape. The trail starts at the picnic area parking lot and can be used to connect to the Ice Age Trail and the Glacial Trail. The trail has a natural surface with steep terrain. Hiking Glacial Trail -- This 0.8-mile trail provides views of the hummocky terrain left behind after the last Ice Age. The trail meanders from the Rainbow Lake Trail to the eastern boundary of the park, where it meets the Ice Age National Scenic Trail. The trail has a natural surface with some steep terrain. Hiking Straight Lake Trail -- This 0.9-mile trail traverses the highland on the south side of Straight Lake, providing some excellent views of the lake before working its way to the southern lake shore. All access trails to the campsites are along the trail, which has natural surface or gravel. For more information call 715-483-3747. Discover, explore the famous Lake Chippewa Flowage

H

NORTHWEST Region

AYWARD – The Lake Chippewa Flowage – fondly known as “The Big Chip – is a year-round destination for outdoor enthusiasts. It’s been preserved in its pristine wilderness state for future generations to enjoy. In 1924, the Wisconsin/Minnesota Power and Light Company completed the dam across the Chippewa River, backing up the waters of 11 natural lakes, nine natural rivers and countless streams and ponds to form the Lake Chippewa Flowage. It’s Wisconsin’s third largest lake (and largest wilderness lake) with over 17,000 acres of water. Chippewa Flowage fishing is some of the finest in the Midwest. It is home to the world-record muskellunge: a 69-pound, 11-ounce monster taken by Louis Spray in 1949 and upheld by the Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame as one of the best-documented world

record musky of all time. Walleye, black crappie, musky and bluegill are the most popular species among Flowage anglers today. DNR fishery management strategies are aimed at optimizing conditions for the reproduction, growth, and survival to preferred sizes of these species in particular. We’ll put in a, ahem, plug for the Lake Chippewa Flowage 2018 Musky Hunt, set for Sept. 6-8. Find details at chippewaflowage. com. Resorts and other groups also sponsor fishing tournaments on The Big Chip. Yellow perch and smallmouth bass add positive elements of diversity to the Flowage fishery. Perch numbers are on the rise and the smallmouth fishery has become outstanding in the darker, river-connected waters of the eastern basin. Largemouth bass and northern pike are present in ever-increasing numbers particularly in the clearer, weedier western basin. With its massive size, over 200 miles of undeveloped shoreline and 140 islands, a lake map is highly suggested for navigation. A map of the flowage showing all resort locations, associate memberships, fish cribs, camping islands and original lakebeds is also available. Go to chippewaflowage.com for more information. You might also consider hiring a professional fishing guide who can put you on fish in short order. If you’re a golfer, don’t forget your clubs. There are 10 golf courses within a half-hour drive of the flowage’s many resorts. And your checkbook and cards – lots and lots of shopping from unique shops of the North to name brand retailers. Various attractions and museums will keep the family busy and happy throughout your stay, too!

‘Tribute to the Trails’ – Mt. Borah Epic is calling CABLE and HAYWARD – The sixth annual Mt. Borah Epic mountain bike race will be Saturday, June 9, offering upwards of 750 big gear enthusiasts the one-of-a-kind experience that can be found only in northern Wisconsin. 9

The Half Epic race starts at 9:30am at the Hwy. OO/ Birkie trailhead and the Full Epic race starts at 10:30am in downtown Cable. The course offers an experience difficult to replicate nationwide and will leave you grinning from ear to ear upon completion. Miles upon miles of pristine single track define the Borah Epic racecourse. The challenge will require riders to surf through smooth banked turns, traverse rock gardens and navigate through twisting turns for 35+ miles.

The Epic was created in 2013 as a way to showcase the singletrack between Cable and Hayward and at the same time raise funds (to date, $72,000) for the Chequamegon Area Mountain Bike Association to support the CAMBA trails. To learn more about this signature event, visit borahepic.com. Each year, Trek generously sponsors the Borah Epic and donates a race bike to raise funds as part of the Epic’s online auction. CAMBA has built, and continues to maintain over 100 miles of pristine single-track trail, coating the northwest Wisconsin area, a place where many outdoor endurance athletes flock year-round for premium recreation, exercise and events. • Shows last approximately one hour & een minutes • Open seating - arrive early in peak season

IRONWOOD – For the first time since 1994, Copper Peak, the iconic ski-flying hill just north of Ironwood, will once again play host to another international competition – but contestants won’t be flying down, but rather they’ll be hoofing it up the steep hill. The “mountain climbing” event on Saturday, May 12 will be none other than Red Bull 400, the world’s steepest 400-meter race. The principle is simple: participants start at the bottom of the ski jump and race 400 meters uphill some 40 stories to the top of the largest artificial ski jump tower in the world. The Copper Peak event, along with two similar events on May 12 in Finland and Japan, debuts the 2018 Red Bull 400 season. The event comprises these disciplines: Full distance races for women and men; 4x100m relay races for men, mixed gender and firefighters. The unusual vertical race challenges participants’ speed and endurance, and is guaranteed to put the participants’ calves, quads and fitness to the ultimate test!

Copper Peak was built in 1969 and held its first International Ski Flying Competition in 1970. Seventeen countries competed at 10 international ski competitions there before Copper Peak closed in 1994. In recent years, Copper Peak has become a popular tourist destination as the view from the top of the jump provides a 360-degree panorama overlooking nearly 40 miles of the Midwest in every direction. They are expecting 450 competitors in seven different registration options: Individual Men’s and Women’s Solo; Red Bull 400 Solo Group Discount (10 participants); Red Bull 400 Individual Ski Patrol/Fire/EMS/Military/Police discount; Individual Men’s and Women’s Custom Heat Time; Red Bull 400 Heat Buyout (corporate option). The 2018 Red Bull 400 season is set to conquer ski jumps across Europe, Asia and North America, putting racers all over the world under the most grueling physical pressure they’ll ever face. For race information on Red Bull 400 Copper Peak visit redbull400. com. For more on Copper Peak, go to copperpeak.com.

Lake Gogebic Chamber sponsors monthly fishing contest WESTERN U.P. Michigan

LAKE GOGEBIC – The 13,380-acre Lake Gogebic is the largest inland lake in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. This impressive multi-species body of water is roughly 14 miles long and 2.5 miles wide. It’s fun when you land a lunker, and a bit more so when you get some spending money for the catch. The Lake Gogebic Area Chamber of Commerce will again hold a monthly fishing contest from May 15 through Sept. 14 of this year. You must purchase a $5 contest button prior to catching the fish. Buttons are available at many local businesses. The chamber awards $25 in “chamber bucks” each month to the holder of the largest fish registered in each of the following categories: walleye, perch, northern, and bass. Fish can be checked in at the following locations: Bear’s Nine Pine Resort, Gogebic Lodge, Hoop-N-Holler Tavern, Root Cellar, The Timbers Resort, and West Shore Resort. Proceeds from the contest help lake projects that will enhance the fishery for future years on Lake Gogebic. As noted, there are multiple species of game fish in Lake Gogebic; however, the pristine lake has a fantastic smallmouth fishery. Smallies from 18 to 22 inches are common. Crankbaits and Twister tails on lead jigs are favorite bait choices while fishing shorelines during spring. The east shore has many rocky points and is popular with fishermen searching for the bronzebacks. Later in the summer, most fishermen switch to minnows, leeches and night crawlers and use a slip-bobber or floating jig in weeds and on mid- to deep-water structure for these never-quit fighters. For tournament information and fishing opportunities in the area, visit lakegogebicarea.com or call 888-4643242.

Visit ‘Little Girls Point’ and learn about its legend

RONWOOD -- Don’t miss an opportunity to visit one of the nicest stretches of sand beach in the Western U.P. Little Girl’s Point offers legendary summer sunsets and is a bit of a legend in itself. Legend has it that the “Point” is the site where an Ojibwa maiden became lost in the “Great Forest” on her unwanted wedding day. Today, the “Point” offers more than romantic sunsets. It’s the site of a campground and day use park. The park is located on a high Lake Superior bluff with a nice level parking area with direct access to endless stretches of sand beach. You’ll see couples sunbathing, youngsters agate hunting, families at picnics, and dads with their small children making the first forays into the waves. Also available: swings, picnic tables, pavilion, grills, restrooms and electric hook-ups for campers. For more information call 906-932-1913. Little Girl’s Point is located 17 miles north of Ironwood on County Road 505. The Legend Leelinaw was the daughter of an Ojibwa hunter whose lodge was at the base of the Kaug Wadjuu, the area now known as the Porcupine Mountains. As a young girl she loved to climb to the upper heights of the Kaug to look over the pine forest stretching to the west known as the Manitowak, or Sacred Forest. The furthest she could see along the Superior shore was the point of land we now call Little Girl’s Point. The Ojibwa seldom visited the Manitowak because they believed it to be inhabited by the Puk Wudjinees, the Little Men of the Forest, who possessed strong magical powers. When bad weather or

the hunt might force Ojibwa hunters into the Sacred Forest they never failed to leave an offering of tobacco and meat for the Puk Wudjinee when they departed. The hunter’s daughter did not share the superstitious fears of her parents and one day she ventured to its outskirts of the Sacred Forest. Hearing of her adventure her parents and the tribe’s elders warned her of the dangers of the place and its magical inhabitants. They warned her to stay away, but this only increased to frequency of her visits, going further into the forest each time, until she reached the point itself. Leelinaw’s mother, fearing that bad spirits were enticing her daughter into the forest, followed her. Deep in the Sacred Forest she saw her leaning against a tree and murmuring: “Spirit of the green wood plume, shed thy leaf perfume, Such as spring from buds of gold, which thy tiny hands unfold. Spirits, hither spirits repair.” And like an answering echo, the rustling leaves seem to say: “Maiden, think of me not a tree, but thine own dear lover free: Tall and youthful in my bloom, with the bright green nodding plume. Thou are leaning on my breast; Lean forever there and rest.” When Leelinaw became old enough to marry, her parents chose a husband for her, and fixed a date for the wedding. On the day of her wedding she once again ventured into the Sacred Forest and disappeared. A search was made, extending into the night, but the bride returned no more to her father’s lodge at the base of Kaug Wudjoo.
