Hunter walking trails serve variety of interests COUNTYWIDE – More than 25 miles of hunter walking trails are maintained in Florence County, especially attractive for grouse and deer hunters in the fall and winter. The county’s Forestry and Parks Department mows the trails and wildlife openings annually and seeds them periodically with clover. The trails are open to anyone throughout the seasons. From September through December, trail users are encouraged to wear blaze orange (a requirement for deer hunters). The Wild Rivers Interpretive Center in Florence has a brochure on the trails. Call 888-889-0049 or visit exploreflorencecounty.com for more information. Lake Emily Trail is located 1/4 mile east of Highway 101 on County Highway D. It can also be accessed from Elm Road off Highway 101. The 2.5-mile long trail has 12 wildlife openings.

Bush Lake Trail is located east of Fire Tower Road in Homestead. Fire Tower Road is located approximately 5 miles east of Highway 101 on Highway C. Four access points on the east side of Fire Tower Road and two access points on the north side of Spur Lake Road. 12 wildlife openings and 11 total miles of trail. Lamon Tangue Creek Ruffed Grouse Area is located across from Bush Lake Trail on Fire Tower Road. It includes approximately 6 miles of trails. Designated a ruffed grouse area, it is very scenic. Halls Creek Trail can be accessed across from LaSalle Falls Road, Halls Lake Road, and Fire Lane Road – all located north of Highway C. This 10-mile road has 5 wildlife openings. Winchester Trail is located at the east end of Roach’s Fire Lane, which intersects Highway N about 7 miles south of Florence. Then east 3 miles. Trail starts north of the DNR Barrens Property and has 4 miles of road. Several miles of Wisconsin Electric property roads are accessible from this trail. Other possibilities include, Bessie Babbit, 3.25 miles; Kretz, 1.5 miles; Burma 3.25 miles and Grandma’s Beaver Pond, 2 miles.

Be twice as nice with ‘Christmas in Florence’ FLORENCE – On Saturday, Dec.1 from 10am until 3pm the Florence Chamber of Commerce is hosting its ninth annual Christmas in Florence at the Florence High School gym and cafeteria. There will be more than 70 vendors in the gym offering a large variety of unique hand-made arts and craft items, as well as other gifts for sale to help with your Christmas shopping. There are many activities for kids. Sitting on Santa’s lap is always a big hit as well as listening to stories from Mrs. Claus. They arrive at 10:30am. Your children will love making hands-on craft projects with the school’s TORPEDOS students. Homemade chili, Christmas cookies and other delicious food items will be for sale in the cafeteria. The musical Yadro family will perform in the library from 10-11am. And the FHS Jazz Band and Show Choir will perform in the auditorium from 11am to noon. This event is free and includes a chance to win many door prizes.

Walking hand-in-hand with nature FOREST COUNTY -- Forest County is blessed with a number of trails that can satisfy a desire for a short walk or which can accommodate extended hikes through the forest and by picturesque lakes. Bring water as some trails don’t have drinking water nearby. Watch for poison ivy, especially at far end of Michigan Rapids Hiking Trail. Here’s a look at some of the popular trails in Forest County:

Laura Lake Trail Trail Length: 2-1/4th mile loop Difficulty: Moderate, uneven, narrow trail with some exposed rocks and roots Directions: Follow Highway 8 north and east from Laona 14 miles. Turn left on FR 2163 and drive 5 miles north to Laura Lake Campground. Trail head between boat ramp and swim area. Limited parking available. Dendro-Eco Nature Trail Trail Length: Approximately 2/3rds mile loop Difficulty: Moderate, wide trail with some gentle slopes Directions: From Laona, follow Highway 8 north 3 miles to FR 2131. Turn right onto Peshtigo River Road (FR 2131) and go east 4 miles to Peshtigo River. Cross bridge and trailhead is on left. Parking for 3-4 vehicles.

Oct. 13 Laona – Fall Craft Fair

Directions: Follow Highway H east and south of Laona for 5-1/2 miles to FR 2136. Turn left and go east 5 miles. Look for sign on the left and gravel access road on the right. Parking for 3-4 vehicles. Ed’s Lake Recreational Trail Length: 6 miles, all loops Difficulty: Varies from easy to difficult. Directions: Trail head located on Highway W midway between Crandon and Wabeno. Look for a large sign along the northeast side of the highway. Parking for 12 or more vehicles. Knowles Creek Interpretive Trail Length: 2/3rds mile Difficulty: Easy and wheelchair accessible Directions: From Highway 32 in Wabeno, drive east 9 miles on Highway C. Turn right at Knowles Creek Impoundment sign and follow gravel road south to parking area and trail head. Parking for 4 vehicles. Otter Springs Skiing and Hiking Trail Length: 8 miles in total length. The beginners trail is about 3/4ths of a mile long. Difficulty: Intermediate trails are hilly and more challenging. Second trail is 1-1/4 miles in length with hills and curves. Directions: 4 miles east of Crandon off Highway 8, north on 2378. Pickerel Lake Walking and Biking Trail Length: 2 miles Difficulty: Paved with easy walking and biking. Directions: Located 18 miles southwest on Crandon on Pickerel Lake Road. From Crandon, take Highway 55, turn onto Pickerel Lake Road by Hills Still Supper Club and go approximately 4 miles.

Michigan Rapids Hiking Trail Trail Length: Approximately 2 mile loop. Difficulty: Moderate, uneven and rocky terrain. Some wet areas in early spring. Directions: From Laona, follow Highway 8 north about 3 miles to FR 2131. Turn right and go east approximately 12 miles to FR 2134. Turn right and go south ½ mile. Look for trailhead sign on left just south of Peshtigo River crossing at Burnt Bridge. Parking for 3 vehicles. Halley Creek Bird Trail Trail Length: 1 mile Difficulty: Easy, flat with some exposed rocks and rocks.

Cardinal Park Walking Trail Trail length: Approximately 3/10th of a mile Difficulty: Easy walking with flat terrain and smooth surface. Includes a section of wooden trail, also easy walking with wooden bridges crossing small wetlands. Directions: In Crandon, take East Madison Street past the county courthouse to Cardinal Park. Paved trail circles park; wooden trail located far end of park.

Back to the Past on Rustic Road-34 ALVIN â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Located in the Chequamegon Nicolet National Forest is a rustic road that has changed little over the years. Designated R-34 in the stateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s inventory of official Rustic Roads, this scenic route includes the Old North Road, the very first road in the Town of Alvin. Rustic roads are great routes to travel any time of the year, but especially so during the fall colors. They are lightly traveled and the maximum speed limit posted is 45 mph. Unique brown and yellow signs mark the routes of all officially designed rustic roads. Of course, there are many other roads in Forest County that are worthy of a drive as many go through the national and county forests and along sparkling blue lakes. R-34 is no exception as it threads its way nearly nine miles through a heavily wooded area, including a 50-year-old pine plantation abundant with wildlife. The entire area teems with possibilities for hunting, fishing, hiking, skiing and snowmobiling.

PESHTIGO – Peshtigo Harbor Unit is a 4,894-acre property located off County Hwy. BB near Peshtigo in Marinette County. Many recreational opportunities exist at the state-owned property, namely biking, birding, canoeing, cross-country skiing, fishing, hiking, hunting, trapping, wild edibles/gathering and wildlife viewing.

This area has extensive marshes at the mouth of the Peshtigo River and bottomland hardwood forests along upstream portions of the river. A little over half of the property is forested with a mixture of oak, aspen and red maple. A self-guided canoe trail has been established on the Peshtigo River running through the wildlife area. Starting at the east side boat landing in the city of Peshtigo, this water trail meanders through an upland hardwood forest, eventually changes to flat marshy estuary, and ends at the mouth of the river in the bay of Green Bay for a total of 11 river miles. An informational brochure is available at the canoe launch below the dam in Peshtigo. It provides ecological and historical information on several sites along the river.

Woods Road Ski Trail is probably the most interestDec. 1 Crivitz -- Snowmoing XC ski trail around. As bile Show & Swap: Middle you ski, you can also look Inlet Fire Dept. for wildlife tracks and learn about how these animals endure the winter. Stations along the trail tell about many wild animals here. The mostly flat landscape and many loop options along this sixmile trail system make it an ideal place for kids and beginners. If snowshoeing is your thing, you can do that here, too. Whatever you choose, just get out and enjoy the beauty of winter on this trail. Take the Peshtigo exit from Highway 41. Once on Business 41 in Peshtigo, go south on West Front Street (first street west of the bridge). This street eventually turns into Hale Road outside the city limits. After a few miles, turn left onto Harbor Road, then right onto Hale School Road. After about one half mile, the ski trail will be on the left. Parking is limited. Winegar Pond is a favorite for avid birders or those just wanting to take in some natural beauty. It offers needed habitat for waterfowl and shorebirds along the bay. It’s also a great place to see birds rare to this region as they rest during migration seasons. To get there, follow Pond Road off County Road BB.

The wildlife area can be accessed from either side of the Peshtigo River downstream from Peshtigo. Take Front Street to Hale Road and follow Harbor Road to the wildlife area on the south side of the river. County Highway BB provides access on the north side of the river.

Wausaukee Fall Festival features more than 100 vendors, crafters WAUSAUKEE -- The 10th annual Wausaukee Fall Festival on Saturday, Oct. 6 features more than 100 vendors and crafters, who will be lined up along Main Street. In celebration of the 10th anniversary, hours have been extended: 9am to 5pm, with the event held rain or shine.

In addition, there will be music by Daze 2 Nights, free horse-drawn wagon rides, free face painting for kids, helicopter rides, a wide variety of food, including booyah by Pastor Fredâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Food Pantry, bake sales, food, refreshments, Black Husky Brewing, farmerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s market, and more.

Vintage/Antique Snowmobile Show & Swap set at Crivitz

CRIVITZ – The 15th annual Vintage/Antique Snowmobile Show & Swap will be Saturday, Dec. 1 at the Middle Inlet Fire Department, at Hwy. 141 and Marinette Cty. Rd X, about five miles north of Crivitz. The North East Wisconsin (N.E.W.) Low Buck Vintage Riders club is the event sponsor. Food and refreshments will be available all day. Sled and swap registration starts at 8am with the awards ceremony at 2:30pm. Visitors will see many original and restored classes from antique (1960s) to classic (1980s plus). Admission is free to spectators.

Two color tours for Marinette County COUNTYWIDE – Marinette County has beautiful scenery, especially in the fall when tree colors are at their peak. Here are a couple of suggested tour routes for you to enjoy whether in the car or truck or on the back of a motorcycle or bicycle:

Start your trip on Pike River Road. Going east four miles are the Ceremonial Indian Dance Rings, 8.5 mile mark north to the first bridge on the Pike River and 12.1 mile mark north to the second bridge.

Dave’s Falls Park is approximately 10 miles north of Wausaukee on US Hwy. 141. Park entrance is located just south of the Village of Amberg and will be on the left side of the road. The park provides spectacular scenery, paths along the river on both sides; high and low rock climbing areas, a bridge spanning the river, playground and restrooms. Take your camera and be prepared to enjoy hiking the trails. Playground, restrooms, picnic tables and well water are also available. Dave’s Fall’s is a county park and there is a car-parking fee when you enter the grounds.

This is a 26-mile loop encompassing Wausaukee to Amberg and back south to Wausaukee. With time spent hiking you should plan a full day trip.

Continue on Pike River Road to Hwy. K, turn left and visit Bulls Falls, exit K onto Hwy. 41 south and a few hundred feet to Dave’s Falls Park entrance to your right. This tour takes you past numerous historical locations, rivers, rapids and parks. Stop for a picnic or hike the river’s edge.

Kick off the holiday season on Saturday, Dec. 1 at Winter Wonderland, Oconto’s holiday light display in Holtwood Campground, 300 Holtwood Way. Hours are 5-8pm. See the dazzling lights up close on a self-guided walking tour and enjoy free hot chocolate and cookies. Whether you’re looking for a family activity or a romantic night out, it’s definitely worth checking out. Strollers, child wagons and wheelchair friendly. Parking will be available throughout Holtwood Sporting Complex and Aageson Pool parking lot.

Gillett -- Christmas in the Park

The event includes a 5K run or walk and a 1-mile kids’ run. There are various age categories. The start of the 5K is at 9am with the kids’ run at 10:30am. Parents or guardians can run with their children. This is a trail run, so there may be roots, mud, water and uneven terrain. While there you can tour the eco-friendly facility and view a demonstration of how their new “green building” creates and stores energy, allowing the facility to become energy self-sufficient. Proceeds from the event will support school programs for local elementary and middle schools. Additional donations are encouraged and are tax-deductible. ‘Mercer Muskie Madness’ Tournament welcomes anglers MERCER – The seventh annual “Mercer Muskie Madness” Tournament is set for Friday and Saturday, Oct. 19 and 20 with headquarters at the sponsor, Gateway Lodge and Resort in Mercer. Eligible tournament lakes are Turtle Flambeau Flowage, Fisher Lake, Spider Lake, Oxbow Lake, Echo Lake, Grand Portage Lake, Pike Lake, Mercer Lake, Lake of the Falls, and Trude Lake, according to tournament director Wayne Riebe of Gateway Lodge. Tournament entry fee is $175 for each two-member team ($200 after Oct. 1), which includes the Friday lunch and the banquet dinner and awards ceremony Saturday night. There will be a number of raffles with quality prizes. Tournament anglers are encouraged to check in and register Thursday, Oct. 18 from 6-7pm at Gateway Lodge. Venison Feed kicks off gun-deer season

TOMAHAWK – This year is the 53rd annual Venison Feed in Tomahawk, and deer hunters from near and far will gather in Tomahawk Friday, Nov. 16 the day before opening of the gundeer season to chow down on venison burgers and to swap tales.

The burgers are free (donations are accepted) along with a bag of chips and a soda. Volunteers will grill in excess of a thousand burgers that come off the grills hot and tasty. Usually, there’s enough for a second serving.

It’s a long-standing tradition that brings out the bearded old-timers, as well as youngsters of both genders looking forward to their first deer hunt with parents, grandparents, uncles and aunts, and cousins. Truth be told, there’s some non-hunters who show up for the burgers (which are reinforced with beef for texture).

A few non-profit groups will be selling chili, bakery and other treats for hunters on the eve of this nine-day gun-deer season.

The grills are set up in front of the post office block, Wisconsin Avenue, which is closed off to vehicular traffic. The serving begins at 11:30am until gone. The event is held rain or shine.

Area hunters donate the venison, which the Tomahawk Area Chamber appreciates. The chamber and its business members say the Venison Feed is also in appreciation for the economic boost that hunters, their shopping “widows” and tourists in general gives the community.

Make it a special time with ‘Christmas in Minocqua’ MINOCQUA – Santa has made his list, checked it twice and everyone in the Minocqua area is nice! So he and Mrs. Claus will be making an early visit to downtown Minocqua on Saturday, Nov. 24. They will be arriving in a horse-drawn wagon at about noon. Santa and Mrs. Claus will first ride around downtown before stopping at Gaslight Square. They will make a loop down main street (Oneida) to Park Avenue and then north on Flambeau Street, to Front Street and back down Oneida Street waving to the good people of the area, before unloading Santa’s sack of treats provided by local merchants. The pair will visit with children at the Gaslight Square Shoppes from 1-4pm. Bring a camera to take pictures of your child with Santa. Children’s crafts and activities will also be happening at the Square. At 4:30 p.m. Santa and Mrs. Claus will lead the way to Veterans Park for carols and the official lighting of the Christmas display at approximately 5pm. Enjoy the decorations downtown, take a horse-drawn wagon ride, visit Santa’s reindeer at the Minocqua Museum and nibble on warm roasted chestnuts while doing your holiday shopping at the numerous unique stores on the Island. Many of the merchants are planning special activities and sales for the day. There are plenty of holiday activities off the Island as well.

Three Lakes Pumpkin Fest rolls out the fun THREE LAKES – Discover your inner Charlie Brown (and Lucy, too) at the 26th annual Three Lakes Pumpkin Fest on Saturday, Oct. 13, at the Three Lakes High School. Hours are 9:30am to 3pm. No admission fee, but suggested is a non-perishable item for the local food pantry. The Three Lakes Fire Department Auxiliary sponsors the event as a fundraiser for the all-volunteer fire department. The all-inside show features more than 100 crafters with a dazzling array of handcrafted items, ranging from jewelry to stained glass to woodwork. This is a juried show with prizes awarded. You can spend more than a couple hours exploring all the vendor booths that fill the gymnasium and line the connecting hallways. There’s also a farmer’s market outside. THREE LAKES – The fifth annual Three Eagle Half Marathon & 5K will be Saturday, Oct. 13 on the Three Eagle Trail, a 13-mile crushed limestone trail connecting Eagle River and Three Lakes. Runners will enjoy the beautiful Northwoods during the peak autumn colors. The chip-timed, point-to-point race gets underway at 9am. From April to November, the trail is open for mountain biking, hiking, horseback riding and wildlife viewing. Horses may use the four feet of trail to the right. There are no fees for trail use. The trail surface for much of the route is crushed gravel; about three miles are surfaced with limestone screenings. Winter use centers on snowmobiles and ATV/UTV from early December through March 31 in both counties. The trail is named for the huge quantities of eastern white pine that were shipped on the route between 1876 and 1988 by the Wisconsin Central Railroad. After the railroad abandoned the line, the rails were torn up and the rail bed converted to a multi-use recreation trail. The Price-Taylor Rail Trail Commission maintains the trail. The northern portion of the trail (crushed gravel) runs through the terminal moraine left by the last Wisconsin glacier some 12,000 years ago. Hardwood and white pine forests cover the hummocks and hills. A restored railroad depot in Ogema is a perfect place for a photograph. The northern forests give way to flatter landscapes of neat and picturesque dairy farms and wetlands in the south (trail is crushed granite). Many active beaver dams can be seen adjacent to the trail and the trail crosses several brooks. For more information, call Price County Tourism Department at 715-339-4505. Back again this year are the Haunted Ice Shanties, sponsored by the Presque Isle Fire Department, and located outside the fire barn on School Loop Road. Move from shanty to shanty to check out the uniquely decorated shanties, and to get a little bit more candy yet. A campfire sits in the middle of the shanties for those who need a little warm-up, and this year they will have fun games to play.

The 3K will start on the bike and hike trail behind the chamber office, wind around community roads and back on the bike and hike trail. Family registration will get you two goodie bags, according to the sponsor, the St. Germain Chamber of Commerce. The Jingle Bell Run/Walk will finish in time so you will be able to enjoy the “Lighting Up St. Germain” holiday parade, carols, visit with Santa and town Christmas tree lighting, all from 5-7pm. The parade route will “jingle jangle’ from Paul’s Rent-All to the St. Germain Fire Department. At the parade’s end, all are welcome to join Santa in singing carols and lighting the town’s Christmas tree.

Your choice: Star Lake Nature and Hiking Trail STAR LAKE – Nurture your inner self with a hike on the beautiful and historical Star Lake Nature and Hiking Trail, which juts out on a peninsula into Star Lake. There are two loops on the site: the short loop is a mile-long interpretive nature trail; the long loop is a hiking path, 2.5 miles long. This historical trail winds its way through what was in the early 1900s a pasture for horses hauling logs from the surrounding woods to the Star Lake Mill. This trail is also the site of the first tree plantings in Wisconsin. The red pine plantation research plot trees that are still on this site were planted as two-year old seedlings in 1913 from seed stock grown at the old Trout Lake Nursery. Today the site bears little resemblance to a horse pasture or early tree farm. It’s filled with mature trees and picturesque trails that wind along the shores of Star Lake. The trail includes scenic boardwalks, interpretive signs, and bypasses ferns and wildflowers. In the winter, it’s a nice place for snowshoeing. To get to the trail take County Hwy. K to State House Road. The trail entrance is at the end of the road, past West Star Lake Campground.

Jordan Buck Heritage Hike follows footsteps of legendary deer hunt DANBURY – This fall before Wisconsin’s gun-deer season is an appropriate time to take a walking tour of Jim Jordan’s legendary hunt that resulted in the harvest of a world-record white-tailed buck in Burnett County.

DANBURY – The Forts Folle Avoine Historical Park near Danbury invites visitors to experience life as it was like in the early 1800s, including the upcoming Dagwaagin Fall Encampment on Saturday, Oct. 6, from 10am to 4pm. “Dagwaagin” is an Ojibwe term for fall and “Gabeshiwin” is Ojibwe for camp. This fall gathering features several re-enactors demonstrating flint knapping, fire starting, rope making, duck decoys constructed from cattails, and more -- think of it as a mini-rendezvous along with shorter tours of the historic site and Ojibwe Village. The clay ovens will be fired and several primitive camps will be set up. Tomahawk throwing and archery are included in this event.

TURTLE LAKE – Bring a hearty appetite to the second annual Wisconsin Colorfest & BBQ Bash in Turtle Lake, where the BBQ will be smok’n’ delicious on Friday, Oct. 5 and Saturday, Oct. 6. Chicken is featured on Friday and ribs on Saturday. This event is an official Kansas City Barbecue Society’s state sanctioned competition and will showcase 25 cooks. The Village of Turtle Lake has set aside nearly $7,000 in prize money for the top winners in four separate categories in the professional barbecue contest. Attendees will judge People’s Choice entries and prizes will be awarded to the top five contestants. The Sterling Trail offers seven miles of closed loop wooden trail. Sterling Trail is open from June 1 through Nov. 15. Off-road motorcycles are not allowed on this trail. The Clear Lake-Clayton Trail, another multi-use trail, is also open year round. It follows 11 miles of railroad trail. There is an ATV/UTV trail through the Village of Clear Lake. Off-road motorcycles allowed spring/summer/fall. Motorcycles not licensed for highway use cannot use that village trail. The Gandy Dancer Trail does not allow frozen ground ATV/UTV on the Polk County segment.

Cattail Trail runs from Amery to Almena for a total of 18 miles of which 12 miles are in Polk County. The trailhead is at Amery where rest rooms and picnic areas can be found. Along the trail you will spot lots of wildlife. The trail is a former railroad bed that runs across six bridges. The multi-use trail is open to off-road motorcycles spring/summer/fall.

Visit Nelson Lake for fishing, relaxation NELSON LAKE –No better place can be found for fishing, relaxation and outdoor beauty than in the Nelson Lake area, located just six miles north of Hayward. With some of the area’s best walleye fishing action and pristine waters, the 2,503-acre Nelson Lake caters to anglers, kayakers, canoeists, and all water enthusiasts alike. A dam built in the mid-1930s on the Totagatic River created the flowage that is Nelson Lake. The shoreline is virtually untouched by human development. There are four public boat landings, including one below the dam, and about a dozen private landings at resorts and campgrounds. A county park with picnic tables, grills and restrooms is located next to the dam.

A number of lodging facilities and campgrounds will bring your soul in touch with the outdoors. Bring the bikes and ride little-traveled roads to your heart’s content. Canoeing remains popular in the Northwoods, but kayaks seem to be overtaking their silent paddling partners. There are tons of wildlife to see here, including eagle nests, a couple osprey nests, along with a number of loons and trumpeter swans on the lake. Whether you fly fish for trout and panfish, cast for northern pike and bass, or use a float to fish for walleyes, the Nelson Lake area has plenty of what you seek. Boardwalk takes visitors through unique wetland STONE LAKE – Wetlands in northern Wisconsin host rare as well as common species of plants and wildlife, but we can view them only from the fringes where the wetlands meet terra firma. That is, unless you happen to be in Stone Lake where a 500-foot boardwalk meanders through a 17-acre wetland.

Officially known as the Stone Lake Wetland Park, the park in the center of the downtown can be accessed either behind The Last Frontier Antiques on Hwy. 70, or at the main entrance at Hwy. 70 and 3rd Street North. You can stroll along the wide boardwalk across the sphagnum bog to the upland Ridge Walking Trails.

This is a “young” park, having been dedicated in 2007. There are 14 benches of rest along the boardwalk and 1.5 miles of woodland walking trails. There are two large picnic areas, a gazebo seating about two dozen with a scenic overlook of the 523-acre Stone Lake, and a 30-foot covered bridge next to the mini-mall. The walks of the covered bridge carry photos and articles describing all steps in the development of the Wetland Park. Stone Lake is located on Hwy. 70, about 19 miles east of Spooner and 16 miles south of Hayward.

SPOONER – The local tourism office and businesses invite ATV and UTV riders to head north to Washburn County and explore the beauty and attractions along the county’s ATV Scenic Tour.

Washburn County’s trail system is one of the premier trail systems in Wisconsin. More than 100 miles of trails connect to surrounding counties, making it one of the largest trail systems anywhere. The majority of the trail system is located on county forestland, managed by the Washburn County Forestry Department. Three clubs lend a hand to maintain the trail system: Minong Trails Club, Rolling Hills ATV & Snowmobile Club, and the Birchwood Bobcats.

The trail system is open from the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend through snowmobile season. Best seasons to take in the ATV Scenic Tour are summer and fall. The ATV Scenic Tour highlights over 35 points of interest located along the 100+ mile ATV/UTV system in Washburn County. They include historical sites such as an old homestead site where you can see remnants of the foundations of the original buildings, old growth forests, museums, and the Namekagon River (part of the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway).

All of Washburn County’s ATV trails are also UTV friendly and welcome side-by-sides up to 65 inches wide. You’ll find many amenities along the trail, including picnic areas, shelters and of course, friendly businesses to welcome you.

Fall color tours are big on the ‘wow’ factor

The Western Upper Peninsula Visitors Bureau has mapped out four scenic tours sure to amaze even Arnold Schwarzenegger himself. For all the listings, visit explorewesternup.com. Among them is the Lake Superior Shoreline Tour. Highlights include Little Girls Point, Lake Superior, Gogebic County Forest, Superior Falls and Saxon Harbor. This tour takes in a little of everything the area has to offer. You begin in Ironwood at the intersection of U.S. 2 and Lake Road (the Holiday Gas Station is there). Take Lake Road north. You will travel about 15 miles. At this point you will enter the Gogebic County forest and begin to go downhill. Halfway down this hill is a spring with good drinking water. As you continue on Lake Road (513) you will come to Little Girls Point. This park is a great place to get out and stretch your legs. Take some time to walk the beach and listen to the waves of the Big Lake. This stretch of land is rich in history. It was the site of Indian villages and resting points for the Jesuit missionaries, most notably Father Jacques Marquette, as they traveled from St. Ignace to Madeline Island in 1669. As you continue west you will come to Superior Falls and the mouth of the Montreal River. This is another good spot to get out and explore. As you cross the Montreal River you will enter Wisconsin. Shortly after this you will see the signs for Saxon Harbor. But alas, it’s currently closed and under reconstruction from a devastating storm that struck in July 2016. Even though you have to skip Saxon Harbor, keep this place in mind for a return trip in 2019. This place is part of the Old Flambeau Trail serving the Chippewa Indians from La Pointe to

Lac du Flambeau. As you return to the main road you will intersect with U.S. 2. Turn left and it will bring you back to Ironwood.

IRONWOOD & LAKE GOGEBIC – In the words of a famous Hollywood actor, “Go now!” Because the autumn colors won’t last forever. From early to mid-October, the leaf colors along the Lake Superior shoreline are, well, incredible!

You can start the Lake Gogebic Fall Color Tour from either end of the lake. As you drive around the lake take the time to stop in at one of the restaurants for lunch or dinner as your view is over the lake. Lake Gogebic is the Upper Peninsula’s largest lake. At 18 miles long and 3 miles wide, the driving distance around the lake is a little over 38 miles. From U.S. 2 east of Marenisco take M-64 north. After a few miles you will be on the south end of Lake Gogebic. About a mile further you will see hiking signs. This trail leads to a scenic overlook of the lake. As you continue up the west shore there are two restaurants; The Gogebic Lodge and the Fishtales Resort. Both have great food with dining rooms that overlook the lake.

The west shore also features three parks. Gogebic County Park is the furthest south, the State Park is in the middle and Ontonagon County Park is on the north end. M-64 will intersect with M28: go east to take you into Bergland. Here you will find gas and supplies. About one mile east of Bergland is East Shore Road, turn right and follow the road until it comes to M-64 on the south end of the lake. Turn left and you will return to U.S. 2.

‘Light to Night’ Festival set at Copper Peak

BESSEMER – Join Copper Peak near Bessemer for their first-ever end-of-season “Light to Night” Festival on Saturday, Oct. 13. Hours are noon to 8:30pm. Jack Frost Festival is back IRONWOOD – Like the beautiful snowfalls that blanket the Northwoods, the Jack Frost Festival in Ironwood has you covered for family fun and excitement – and treats – for weeks to come! Along with the magical “Festival of Lights” parade, there will be snocross racing, pro vintage snowmobile racing, a cross-country ski race, and visits by Santa and Mrs. Claus. Events begin Nov. 14 with the 6pm tree lighting ceremony held at the Historic Ironwood Depot. Nov. 30 -- “Jack Frost Friday” from 5:30-7:30pm in downtown Ironwood, with carolers, crafters, business window decorating contest winner award, and with businesses open late.

Dec. 1 -- Santa and Mrs. Claus in residence at River Valley Bank, downtown Ironwood, from 3-5pm. The Jack Frost Festival of Lights Parade, downtown Ironwood, starts at 6pm. See downtown lit up with amazing floats, windows decorated with lights and businesses open for you to stay warm. Enjoy this festive activity and see downtown Ironwood in full glory! The Gogebic Range Concert Band will have a concert at the Historic Ironwood Theatre, 7:30pm. Dec. 7 -- The Claudettes Dance Ensemble performs at the Historic Ironwood Theatre at 7pm (also on Dec. 8 at 7pm and Dec. 9 at 2pm.)

Calendar Alpha Fear Factory – it’s open until the last scream dies away

ALPHA – Get ready for a haunting good time at Alpha this October. The third annual Alpha Haunted House in Alpha will be open for business – and your screams – on two evenings, Friday and Saturday, Oct. 26 & 27.

Located in the old Alpha Porter School at 402 Main Street, the Haunted House is a multi level haunted house with four sets of stairs to go up and down to each level (not handicap accessible). Smoke machines and strobe lights help with the scare effects in the rooms. Shirts and hoodies will be available for purchase.
