DESTINATION PLUS Anywhere, everywhere Winter has officially arrived and whether you hanker for zooming across the frozen lake surface on a snowmobile, or making silent tracks on cross-county ski trails, the great Northwoods is the perfect destination for you. There are literally thousands of lakes flush with walleye and northern pike, as well as perch and crappies, for anglers to discover here. (Some in the fraternity, including this scribbler, spend wa-ay too much time hunkered over our underwater video cameras, mesmerized by the northern or muskie mugging for the camera!) Several downhill ski facilities are within a ski pole reach, offering lots of thrills and far less costly than a trip out West. Pair with an

overnight lodging option, and you have the makings for a great get-away for couples and families. Overlooked sometimes, but offering top-notch entertainment for the entire family are the sled dog races. You can find them in Langlade, Lincoln, Vilas and Bayfield counties. Just listen for the excited barks of the canine athletes just before the gates open! Snowmobile races are very popular, including at the famed World Championship Derby Complex in Eagle River, the “525” races at Wausau, the straightaway drags at St. Germain, sno-cross at Hayward and other venues. Each county, each town has its special charm and offerings for you to explore and enjoy in the land they call “Up North.”

Florence County XC ski trails

Lake Emily – This cross-country ski trail is groomed for both classical and skate skiing every Thursday during the snow season. The rolling terrain is a medium difficulty experience. You can do a 2.5-mile loop or by adding the south loop you can ski 4 miles through county forestland near Lake Emily.

Hall’s Creek Trail -- The gentle rolling terrain on the Hall’s Creek Trail will allow you to travel 7 miles with a low difficulty rating. Maps of the area are available at the trailhead to ensure that your experience through this forest is a safe one. Or stop by the Wild Rivers Interpretive Center or obtain a map through their website exploreflorencecounty.com by clicking on the maps and brochures tab.

Directions: From Florence go south on State Hwy. 101 and then travel east on County Hwy. D one half mile. The parking lot is on the south side of the road.

Directions: South on County Hwy. N 7.5 miles, west on County Hwy. C 2 miles, north on LaSalle Falls Road 2.5 miles to LaSalle Falls parking lot on right. Trail is across the road.

FLORENCE – When the snow flys in the Northwoods, cross-country skiers turn to Florence County for three ski trails. The Florence County Forestry and Parks Department maintains the Lake Emily and Halls Creek ski trails. The U.S. Forest Service maintains the Lauterman Trail. Updated conditions of these trails can be obtained by calling the Wild Rivers Interpretive Center at 888-889-0049 or going online to skinnyski.com or travelwisconsin.com. Below is a comprehensive list of the three trails that are groomed and tracked.

Lauterman Lake -- The gentle rolling slopes traverse to steep terrain, giving this trail system a medium to high difficulty level as you trek 9 miles through the Nicolet National Forest. You will find the Lauterman Trail to be an exciting experience, which, in the summer, is used by bicyclists who like the difficulty level with its steep terrains. Directions: From Florence take State Hwy. 70 West approximately 8 miles. Turn left into the Lauterman Trail parking area.

Endless possibilities with Forest snowmobile trails COUNTYWIDE – Forest County has 405 miles of state-funded snowmobile trails for riders to explore and enjoy.

Various services, food, lodging and retail stores are available along the trails.

Five snowmobile clubs work throughout the year, but especially during the snow season to ensure they are signed, well maintained and groomed. Those clubs are The 100 Mile Snow Safari, Blackbear Sportsmen’s Club, Lumberjack Memorial Trails (LMT), Three Lakes/Brule Trails, and Tombstone/Pickerel Trails.

The trail systems

The trails run though the heart of the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest as well as over thousands of acres of county, state and industrial forestlands. With 92% of the land base being forested, the trails take you through endless miles of pristine forests. As always, be respectful and responsible on both public and private property so that you may continue to have these trails.

100-Mile Snow Safari - approximately 150 miles of marked and groomed trails through the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest, linking all areas of Forest County. Lumberjack Memorial Trails - over 90 miles of trails in central and southern Forest County. These trails link to the 100-Miler as well as the Townsend trails. Three Lakes/Brule Trails - over 80 miles of groomed trails through the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest, linking northern Forest County to Florence, Vilas and Oneida counties as well as Upper Michigan. Tombstone-Pickerel Trails - over 20 miles of groomed trails in southern Forest County with numerous pit stops and resorts as well as providing a link to the Langlade County trail system. Blackbear Sportsmen’s Club Trails - over 40 miles of groomed trails, linking the Crandon area north and west to trails in Oneida County. Development of ATV/UTV trails, routes, and trailheads is always ongoing in Forest County. As a result of the coordination and cooperation of the U.S. Forest Service, Forest County ATV clubs, citizens and townships, Forest County has over 300 miles of ATV/ UTV routes and 47 miles of

The two state trails in Forest County are the Nicolet State Trail and the Wolf River State Trail. The Nicolet State Trail is located in eastern Forest County. It is 32 miles long connecting with Oconto County to the south and Florence County to the north. The Wolf River State Trail is 15 miles long and is located in the central and southern part of the county.

Both trails are abandoned railroad corridors that have been surfaced with gravel and are open year round for ATV, UTV, dual-sport motorcycle, and snowmobile use. These state trails are the only snowmobile trails in the county that are open year round to ATV/UTV use.

Ice fishing derby marks 30th year POUND – The White Potato Lake Sportsmen’s Club’s 30th annual ice fishing derby will hand out a number of cash prizes to successful anglers on Saturday, Jan. 19. Tournament headquarters is Wouter’s Front II on the shore of White Potato lake. Fish registration is from 8am to 3pm. Cash prizes will be awarded for the first, second and third largest fish in the categories of

northern, bass, walleye, perch, bluegill and crappie. Your derby entry ticket is also your chance to win one of the hourly drawings. For more information, call 920-897-4162. There will be many separate raffles, some with large cash prizes; along with music, hot lunch and refreshments throughout the day and all housed in a large heated tent. Advance tickets can be purchased beginning at 3pm Friday at Wouter’s. There will also be a kids raffle, free for those age 12 and under, with each child going home with a prize. That drawing will be at 2pm and winners must be present to claim the prizes.

Star-studded field at High Falls Radar Run CRIVITZ – The first of three High Falls Radar Runs will take place Saturday, Jan 26 on the High Falls Flowage. The other dates are Feb. 9 and 23. Sponsored by the Twin Bridge Water Ski Team as a fundraiser, the events will present trophies for top speeds in all classes, including non-studded, studded, stock, improved, and modified. Spectators will see antique snowmobiles, motorcycles, ATVs, UTVs and more. Registration begins at 8:30am, with racing from 9am to 4pm on the 800-foot track. The Iron Snow Shoe Associate Club will be selling food and refreshments. The radar run site is just off Boat Landing 3 Road, 12 miles northwest of Crivitz. Parking on land is available. Marinette to host Da Santa Speedo 5K Run/Walk Run MARINETTE – Costumes are highly encouraged for the Da Santa Speedo 5K Run/Walk set for Saturday, Dec. 8 in Marinette. The River Cities Community Pool is the event sponsor. You don’t have to run or walk, say the sponsors. Skipping and dancing are also options, just as long as you fill the streets with holiday cheer. MENOMINEE – Next door to Marinette, Menominee is having some fun this winter, as only the Yoopers can. The 10th annual Da Yooper Winterfest will be Saturday, Jan. 26, from 10am to 3pm at Menominee Marina, 920 Doyle Drive. COUNTYWIDE -- Marinette County has over 600 miles of snowmobile trails for you to explore. The trails are scenic, wide, well groomed and clearly marked. The trail system opens anytime after Dec. 15 each year depending on the snow conditions. Marinette County trails are all tied into the statewide system. Ice fishing derbys set on Shawano Lake SHAWANO – Anglers will want to mark their calendars for a couple of hard water fishing tournaments on Shawano Lake. The Bonduel Lions’ 50th annual ice fishing derby will be Saturday, Dec. 29 with fishing on Shawano Lake. Headquarters is at Bamboo Bar, W58884 Cedar Ct., Shawano Lake. Fishing hours are 7am to 4pm, with cash prizes for various fish categories to be awarded. There is also a raffle drawing. There will be a meat raffle in the afternoon and cash raffle drawings beginning at 6pm. Fishing derby tickets are $5 each or 3 for $10 and are available at various outlets, including bait shops and taverns. A drawing from the fishing derby tickets will net the winner $500. The fourth annual Operation Tip-Up Ice Fishing Derby will be Saturday, Jan. 19 (this weekend is also Wisconsin’s free fishing weekend – no license needed) out of Cecil Bay on Lake Shawano. Anglers will compete to haul in the largest northern pike, walleye, bass, perch, crappie and bluegill in two divisions: adult and under 15. SEELEY – Compete or tour. Or both, if you decide to race the Seeley Hills Classic Ski on Saturday, Jan. 12 and follow it up by skiing the non-competitive Birkie Trail Tour on Sunday, Jan. 13. Both events start at Seeley. The Classic Ski features classical technique 42K and 22K races in an out-and-back format with a start time at 10am at the Hwy. OO warming building on the Birkie Trail. Online registration available at seeleyhillsclassic.com The Seeley Hills Classic is the second-largest annual classic cross-country ski event on the Birkebeiner Trail. The 42K race is sanctioned by the US Ski & Snowboard and is an American Birkebeiner qualifying race. The marathon race also connects some of the biggest cross-country ski events across the region, as the Seeley Hills Classic is the first of six races in the CXC Marathon Cup series. The Penman Prizes are awarded to the top three finishers of both the male and female divisions of the 42K race: $1,000 for first, $250 for second and $125 for third.

Birkie Tour

The Birkie Tour will begin at the American Birkebeiner trailhead. Park, start, and finish in the same location. The three recommended distance options are the 47 km, 28 km and 16 km. The Birkie Tour is an untimed, “open-track” style event on a loop course up to 47 km. Spend the day skiing with family and friends with a morning start time window, aid stations along the trail, and food and beverage at the start/finish when you’re done. You can get credit for skiing a Worldloppet event. Registration available at Birkie.com. Onsite registration and bib pick up in the Great Hall at the Birkie trailhead from 8am until 9am. Skiers may depart from the Birkie Trailhead between 9am and 10am. There is a discount for signing up for both the Birkie Tour and the Seeley Classic.

Overall winners of the 42K and 22K races will receive an award, as well as the top two in each age class plus the wooden ski class. Age class winners in both races will receive pottery plates produced by Eckels Pottery of Bayfield. The first 500 skiers registered will receive a Swix classic ski hat, and each finisher receives a bowl of soup and roll at the Sawmill Saloon in Seeley after the race, where awards and raffle prize drawings will be held.

Winter riding the ATV/UTV trails in Burnett County COUNTY-WIDE – There’s no reason to put your ATV or UTV away when the snow flies in Burnett County. In addition to the 56 miles of summer ATV/UTV trails, Burnett County boasts 87 miles of “frozen ground” ATV/UTV trails and 130 miles of winter ATV/UTV trails. Additional miles of ATV/UTV routes provide connections to its neighboring counties of Douglas and Washburn. ATVs/UTVs are not allowed on the Gandy Dancer Trail except from Dec. 1 through March 31 once trails are officially open. Of course, all ATVs/UTVs must be registered or licensed. Certain county roads have segments open to ATV/UTV travel; check with townships you plan to ride in for additional information. From Dec. 1 through March 31, ATVs are allowed on state-funded winter trails when a four-inch groomed snow-base is present and trails have been officially opened. If there’s no snow, the frozen ground ATV winter trail will be open for use once the ground is frozen. Along the routes and trails, the blue blazers indicate winter-use ATV/UTV trail. Celebrate the holidays with ‘Christmas at the Forts’ DANBURY – If you missed the opening weekend (Dec. 1-2) of Christmas at the Forts, there’s one more opportunity. But it’s just around the corner – on Saturday, Dec. 8, from 11am to 5pm.

Warm up outside with cocoa, a hot dog, popcorn or warm up inside with home-cooked wild rice soup or chili. Take care of that nice person on your Christmas list with a unique present from the gift shop. Admission is free, but some events such as sleigh rides, face painting and treats carry a fee. Forts Folle Avoine Historical Park is located on 80 wooded acres along the Yellow River. The Burnett County Historical Society operates the park, a National Register of Historic Places site.

The Turtle Lake Lions Club’s 2018 holiday display in Turtle Lake Village Park (227 Maple St. North) will once again glitter for all to enjoy throughout the month of December until Tuesday, Jan. 1. Lights remain lit each evening from dusk until 11pm. The displays include a wide variety of Christmas lights, props and other visually striking holiday themes. Admission is free and you can either stroll through the park or drive your vehicle to view them.

Pat’s Landing is hosting its seventh annual Tipper Tourney on the west side of the famed Chippewa Flowage on Saturday, Jan. 5. Snocross race set at Hayward

HAYWARD â&#x20AC;&#x201C; The Great Northern Sno-X Series will bring exciting snowmobile snocross racing to Hayward the weekend of Jan. 12-13.

Flambeau River Candlelight Ski and Hike WINTER -- Get outside this winter and enjoy lighted trails at the Flambeau River State Forest. Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s no better opportunity to do so than the 27th annual Flambeau River candlelight ski and hike on Saturday, Feb. 2. Hours are 6-9pm. A 1.8-kilometer loop of the Flambeau Hills Trail will be groomed, tracked and brightly lit with more than 600 glowing candles. The trail winds through the heart of the forest and is wide enough for diagonal striders and skate skiers. Hiking and snowshoeing are also welcomed on the trail during this event.

Picnic tables and a large grill will be available, with refreshments and snacks provided. There will also be large warming fires maintained throughout the night. Trail pass fees are waived during the event. This event will take place regardless of snow conditions -- if there is no snow, take a candlelight walk. The Flambeau Hills Trailhead is located on County Highway W, about 21 miles west of Phillips and 15 miles east of Winter.

Don’t miss the ‘Light Your Engines’ parade

HAYWARD – Rumor has it that the “Light Your Engines” parade in Historic Downtown Hayward is Santa’s favorite, according to the sponsors of this A “Lure” of Lights event set for Saturday, Dec. 8. The parade and other events listed below are part of the annual A “Lure” of Lights promotion – a series of family-oriented events spectacularly set against the backdrop of a downtown ablaze in thousands and thousands of Christmas lights! (Lights turn on at dusk each evening.)

The parade begins at 6pm on Main Street. The parade will include various lighted vehicles, including snowmobiles, ATVs and tractors. Downtown Hayward is where you will want to be again on Saturday, Dec. 15 for “Hot Chocolate Crawl Round 2.” From 11am to 4pm, you can visit downtown area businesses in search of Hay-

ward’s tastiest hot chocolate. Each participating business will give you a sample of their finest blend in hopes you will cast your ballot for them. Cold weather doesn’t stop Hayward from having some fun outside. Witness the third annual “Chilly” Cook-Off and Winter Beer Bar set for Saturday, Dec. 22, from noon to 3pm on Main Street. Local culinary legends will submit their best chili for you to enjoy. Cast a ballot for your favorite and help determine the next chili champ. There will be games for the family and s’more pits as always. For those 21 years of age and older, The Whistle Punk will be serving up your favorite winter brews. Northwoods Blizzard Blast A Flurry of Winter Fun Planned for the Northwoods Blizzard Blast

(Conover, WI) The 6th annual Northwoods BLIZZARD BLAST is planned for Sat., Feb. 16 at the Conover Park. Featuring activities for winter enthusiasts of all ages, the event is sure to entertain both participants and spectators alike. Children will revel in the Dogsled Dash event as well as face painting and pony rides. Chilly Charlie’s Children’s Carnival features winter games with prizes for all children. Children will also enjoy creating art in the snow as well as sledding and skating. Giant Ski Races will challenge a group of four to ski together and stay in sync and upright while strapped to a pair of 18 foot long custom made skis. Recliner Races, Ice Bowling and Slap Shot Hockey will be held on the ice rink in the center of the park. The baseball diamond will host the Snowshoe Baseball games. Demonstration and instruction in snowshoeing and archery will be held throughout the day. For a more serene activity, climb aboard a Horse Drawn Sleigh Ride. Rides will depart the park every 15 minutes and travel through scenic forest lands. Activities on the park grounds kick oﬀ at 10:00am and end at 4:00pm. There is no admission fee to the park. Single event tickets are available for purchase for those who want to get in on the action. Proceeds raised at the event go to area Fire & EMS departments. The Northwoods Blizzard Blast Artisan Bazaar is held the same day from 9:00am until 4:00pm in the Conover Community Center adjacent to the park. Handcrafted winter wear, seasonal crafts and jewelry will be showcased. Try tasty samplings of artisan breads, dips, cheeses and candy and take home your favorites. Wildlife art, hand carved wooden creations and chainsaw carvings will also be featured.

The Taste of Conover Not Just a “Taste” It’s hard to believe that a small town in Northern Wisconsin can have some of the best restaurants in the state. About twelve years ago members of the Town of Conover decided to put together a “Taste of Conover” to introduce the area to what they consider, great food! The restaurants jumped at the chance to have people taste their specialty items. The Taste of Conover was set up in the town park with live music, tents to get out of the sun, activities for kids, and the great aroma of delicious food. Apparently, that was all that was needed – everyone turned out. One thing about Conover, they don’t do anything in a small way. People expected “a taste” and came away with a plate full. And, there were 15 different vendors, so, of course, everyone had to try everything. NO ONE went away hungry. Lots of beverages were consumed to wash down the food. Kids had butter dripping off their chins from the slow roasted corn on the cob (made for a very slippery day for them in the bounce house). Other kids took turns in the dunk tank – a great way to cool off on a hot day. AND, the food was sold out quickly.

Now, twelve years later, people come from all over the state, the last Sunday in June, to the “Taste of Conover”. People have told us that they plan their vacation around the event because Conover actually has some of the best food in the state. Lots of improvements have been made. Lots more food. Serving trays are provided so everyone can carry lots of food items to their favorite spot under the tent to listen to music, have a beverage or two, and go back for more. The kids are still enjoying it all. You can find almost any type of food, a lot locally grown, some gluten free, some organic, something for everyone. It has become a relaxing Sunday afternoon in the park, tummies full, containers to go, and smiling faces. Town History The man for whom our town is named is Seth H. Conover, who came from Plymouth, Wisconsin, and was a prominent cheese buyer. Conover’s hobbies were fishing and hunting. He came to the Northwoods on the logging trains that the timber industry used to get wood to the mills of Central and Southern Wisconsin.

Seth Conover became quite friendly with some of the oﬃcials of the CNW Railroad and went on hunting and fishing trips with them. He was familiar with our area and felt that the location of present Conover was as close as possible to Big Twin Lake where he enjoyed fishing. After stopping at the same place for several years, the railroad men began referring to it as Conover’s Place and decided to build a station there. In time it was formally designated Conover on the railroad maps. In 1891, seventy-three acres of land were deeded to Seth Conover on Big Twin Lake and later became Lakota Resort. Guests to the resort were met at the rail station in Conover by a team and wagon for transport. Tourists came from the city and stayed for the season. On January 3, 1907, the town of Conover was formally set aside from the town of Eagle River. Conover is truly a wonderful place to visit because of its natural beauty and rich past. Conover-Phelps Trail

Map link: https://www.vilaswi.com/rail-trail/ Length: 7.6 miles The Conover-Phelps Trail will shortly connect its two namesake communities along the former Chicago & North Western Railroad, providing views of woodlands and wetlands along the way. The Conover-Phelps Trail is a mixed trail surface. Recently completed at the west end of the trail starting at the Conover Town Park are 3.2 miles of hard surface for biking and walking along with three scenic water crossings in its first few miles. From Muskrat Creek Road east to the trailhead, find 8.5 miles total of hard surface trails ideal for hiking and mountain biking. Parking and Trail Access: A parking lot and restrooms are available on the west end of the trail in the Conover Town Park at 4679 Park Circle in Conover.

Decker Lake Trails

The Decker Fire Lane is mowed on a three-year rotation and is not plowed during the winter. Parking and Trail Access: From the intersection of Hwy 45 and County Hwy K in Conover, continue west on County Hwy K approximately 5 miles to Decker Lake Fire Lane. Turn south on Decker Lake Fire Lane to various parking areas.

Deep Lake Trails

Terrain is level and winds through stands of aspen, pine, and northern hardwoods. There are ADA compliant picnic sites at Range Line Lake and Deep Lake. Range Line Lake also has a carry-in canoe launch. There is a disabled accessible fishing pier at Deep Lake. Deep Lake Road is part of the Vilas County Snowmobile Trail System and is not accessible by vehicles during the winter season. Parking and Trail Access: From the intersection of Hwy 45 and County Hwy G north of Eagle River, continue west on County Hwy G approximately 1.25 miles to Croker Road. Turn north on Croker Road and continue about 2 miles to Deep Lake Road and the first of several parking areas.

Eagle River – Land O’ Lakes Bike Route

The route follows quiet forested roads and lakes along the way. The ride is relatively easy with some gentle hills. There is an opportunity for food and rest about halfway along the route. Parking and Trail Access: From the intersection of Highway 45 and County Highway G on the north side of Eagle River, continue west on County Highway G approximately .3 mile to Adams Road and a parking area (Oldfield Park) on the south side of Highway G.

Heart Lake Trail

Heart Lake Road is part of the Vilas County Snowmobile Trail System and is not accessible by vehicles during the winter season. Parking and Trail Access: From Conover, continue west on County Hwy K approximately 2 miles to County Hwy S. Turn north about 1.5 miles and watch for the Heart Lake Trail signs on the east side of the road.

Langley Lake Trails

A segment of trail on the northern edge of the trail system is disabled accessible for hunting. No parking areas are plowed in the winter. Parking and Trail Access: From Conover, take County Hwy K west approximately 7 miles to a parking area at Langley Lake Road just before the intersection with East Laura Lake Road.

Ski Hill Trails

Muskrat Creek Trail

Map link: https://www.vilaswi.com/muskrat-creek-trail/ Length: 6 miles The terrain is gently rolling through stands of aspen, pine and oak. This area is adjacent to a Spruce Grouse Management Area. Fire Lane Road and Muskrat Creek Road are town roads which are plowed through the winter season. The southern segment of this trail system is part of the Vilas County Snowmobile Trail System. Parking and Trail Access: From the intersection of Hwy 45 and County Hwy K in Conover, continue east on County Hwy K approximately 2 miles to Muskrat Creek Road. Turn north on Muskrat Creek Road and continue about 1 mile to the start of parking areas.

Pioneer Creek Cross-Country Ski Trail Map link: https://www.vilaswi.com/pioneer-ski-trail/ Length: Various lengths This 1.5 ski trail via access at the Conover Town Park (which has picnic tables, a playground, ADA accessible heated bathrooms and a plowed parking area in winter) is connected by a newly created .6mile connector to the Pioneer Creek Trail system oďŹ&#x20AC;ering additional trail loops for cross-country skiing. The trails are mostly rolling hills for novice and intermediate ski level (some steeper hill climbs at the gravel pit road and the two-way trail to Pioneer Creek Trail). The trail loops pass through a variety of forest types such as young jack pine, aspen, oak and large white pine. Trail will be groomed weekly or as needed. During non-snow seasons, these loops, along with other loops, are open for hiking and hunting with several entry points accessible for disabled hunters. Additionally, several loops of this system are open to equestrian riding via a connector trail from the Torch Lake Loop of the Equestrian Trail System to create almost 20 miles of signed equestrian trails. Additional trail enhancements are planned. Parking and Trail Access: From the intersection of Highway 45 and County Highway K, continue east on County Highway K approximately Â˝ mile to the Conover Town Park at 4689 Park Circle.

Pioneer Creek Trail

The first .25 miles of the Ski Hill Road is a Town of Conover Road and is plowed during the winter season, making the system accessible for winter enjoyment. A portion of this trail along with connecting corridors to Torch Lake Trails and Pioneer Creek Cross-Country Ski Trails, has created almost 20 miles of signed equestrian trails. Additional trail enhancements are planned. Parking and Trail Access: From the intersection of County Hwy K and Hwy 45 in Conover, continue south on Hwy 45 about 4 miles to Ski Hill Road. Turn east on Ski Hill Road and continue about .25 miles to parking area.

Torch Lake Trails

Portions of the Torch Lake Road and River Road are plowed during the winter, giving access to the trails. The rolling terrain with the variety of habitats and proximity to the Wisconsin River make this area an excellent choice for wildlife viewing. A portion of this trail along with connecting corridors to Ski Hill Trails and Pioneer Creek Cross-Country Ski Trails, has created almost 20 miles of signed equestrian trails. Additional trail enhancements are planned. Parking and Trail Access: From the intersection of County Hwy K and Hwy 45 in Conover, continue south on Hwy 45 about 2 miles to Torch Lake Road. Turn west on Torch Lake Road and go about 1 mile to a parking area. Or from Torch Lake Road continue on Hwy 45 another mile to River Road. Turn west on River Road and continue about 1 mile to additional parking areas and trail access.

White Squaw Lake Trail

Portions of this trail, via the Pioneer Creek Cross Country Ski Trail, are utilized to create almost 20 miles of signed equestrian trails. A part of this trail, Pioneer Creek, is a County Forest Road which is not plowed during the winter season. Parking and Trail Access: From the intersection of Hwy 45 and County Hwy K in Conover, continue east on County Hwy K, just past the Town Park and watch for the Pioneer Creek Trail signs on the south side of the road.

Terrain is rolling hills. Roads accessing these trails are town roads and are plowed during the winter. A part of this system, east of White Squaw Lake Road, also serves as a snowmobile trail. Parking and Trail Access: From the intersection of Hwy 45 and County Hwy K in Conover, continue west on County Hwy K to County Hwy S. Turn north on County Hwy S and continue to Baker Lake Road. Turn west on Baker Lake Road and continue approximately 7 miles to White Squaw Lake Road. Turn north on White Squaw Lake Road and continue about .5 miles to the first of several bermed access points.

Equestrian Conover is your starting point of adventure on horseback. Among the woods and waters surrounding Conover are Vilas County Horse Trails which are a well maintained network of riding lands connected to the River Road Equestrian Campground. The campground showcases a new toilet building, a hand pump well, room for portable pens, mowed open areas for camping and a graveled day use parking area. Covering nearly 20 miles in three marked loops each equestrian route is linked by connector trails. It’s a classic Northwoods landscape featuring gently rolling terrain and mixed hardwoods dotted with pine trees. The marked loops have wide grassy surfaces and are non-motorized. Most of the connector trails are located on old railroad grade, remnant of the historic era that is respectfully shared with motorized recreational vehicles. Plan your equestrian adventure today!

Off-Highway Motorcycle Oﬀ-road motorcycling is a new opportunity to have adventure and fun in Conover! The single track trail system is for both Limited Use (non-DMV registered) and Dual Sport (DMV registered) motorcycles. To ride on this system, both types of motorcycles are required to purchase an OHM permit from the Wisconsin DNR. Located across from the Tamarack Springs Campground and open for your enjoyment from May to October is approximately 8 miles of family friendly and beginner skill level trails. We have 11 major lakes, the Wisconsin River, and numerous smaller lakes and streams for your enjoyment. Spend a perfect summer day canoeing or kayaking searching for wildlife. Enjoy a relaxing afternoon cruising along our many shores in the pontoon boat with the family. If you are an angler, the fishing opportunities are endless here in Conover, from catching pan fish with the kids, to landing a trophy musky, or fishing one of our many trout streams. Upper Buckatabon Springs State Natural Area

This natural area features a complex of at least five undeveloped soft-water springs and spring ponds that drain into the upper reaches of the Wisconsin River. Club-spur orchids grow along the spring pond margin while emergent and floating-leaved aquatics are found within the springs. Associated wetlands include shrubby shore fen, alder thicket, northern sedge meadow, and tamarack swamp. The surrounding uplands support good quality stands of mixed red pine and white pine with some mature jack pine present locally. A tiny stand and scattered inclusions of old growth red pine occur on a narrow ridge and a steep side slope in the northeastern corner of the site. Fire scars are common on many of these larger trees. Along some of the swamp margins are mature second growth stands of spruce and fir with scattered large remnant white cedars. Mature big-tooth aspen with red oak is present in the northeastern most forty. Upper Buckatabon Springs is owned by the DNR and the Board of Commissioners of Public Lands. It was designated a State Natural Area in 2010. From the intersection of US Highway 45 and County K West go 4.7 miles west to Buckatabon Creek. The site lies north of the road.

Wisconsin River Centennial Trail Trip 1

This first trip from the Dam on Lac Vieux Desert to the River Road Landing in Conover runs the gamut from narrow but passable (be prepared for beaver dams and deadfalls) through twists and turns (may need to walk through a stretch of low hazard rapids) to broad floodplain with occasional oxbows and moderately fast current. There are some portages (by the dam, across the road, and some beaver dams). There are also several landings suitable for take-out or put-in. There are also two campsites (one night only) along the route at Rummels Road and the Buckatabon Creek.

This trip segment from the River Road Landing in Conover to the beginning of the Rainbow Flowage crosses the broad floodplains through Watersmeet Lake (slow current with boat traﬃc) to the Otter Rapids Dam area. From the Dam to Hwy O, the tailwater area is fast with many boulders. The river channel narrows through the wooded uplands and marshy lowlands to the beginning of the Rainbow Flowage. Winds can make crossing the flowage diﬃcult. There are portages by the dams along with several landings suitable for take-out or put-in. No camping is allowed on the reservoir shoreline.

Beaches & Parks Hunter Lake Park & Swim Area

This park is located on the southeast shore of Hunter Lake at 5710 Hunter Landing Road. The swim area is accessed via the sandy beach. There is no lifeguard on duty. The park contains 2 fire rings with attached grates and 6 picnic tables. There are informal horseshoe pits and a swing set in the play area, and an unimproved boat launch, providing boating and fishing opportunities. The comfort station is located near the parking lot.

Torch Lake Park & Swim Area

The park is located at 4689 Park Circle. Playground equipment, basket ball court, pickle ball court, soccer fields, baseball backstop, sledding hill, hockey, ice skating, pavilions and picnic shelter, and heated restrooms.

Geocaching is a real-world, outdoor treasure hunting game using GPS-enabled devices. Participants navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates and then attempt find a geocache (container) hidden at that location. Just go to www.geocaching.com and sign up for free. All ages will enjoy this ever growing outdoor activity. It’s a great way to learn about the area. There are over 92 caches in the Conover area so come on over and have some fun!

Camping & Campgrounds Conover is your starting point of adventure for camping. Our plentiful lakes and streams and abundant forests oﬀer endless camping opportunities. Conover has campgrounds with all the amenities close to the lakes and our many trails, remote campsites that you can reach by paddle and a campground that you and your horse can enjoy too!

Area Vilas County Campgrounds Tamarack Springs Campground

This campground is located at 5025 Tamarack Road oﬀ County Highway S, west of Conover. Campground is open May to October on a first come, first served basis, at a cost of $10.00 a site per night. The campground accommodates tents and small trailers. There are nine campsites. Each campsite includes a fire ring with attached grill and a picnic table. Vault toilets and water pump. There is a day use picnic area with grills and picnic tables. This campground has direct access to the Vilas County ATV trail and the Oﬀ-Highway Motorcycle Trail Head.

Buckatabon Creek Campground

This campground is located near the junction of Buckatabon Creek and the Wisconsin River. The campground is for primitive camping, and includes two free standing cooking grills, a fire ring with attached grill, a picnic table, latrine and a small shelter. There is no motor vehicle parking at this campground. This campground is walk-in or boat access only. A self-registration station is located on premises. A camping permit of $5.00/night is required. Camping is limited to 10 consecutive days per site. The camping permit can be obtained by mail or in person at the Vilas County Parks & Recreation Department.

Torch Lake Campground & RV Park

Torch Lake Campground & RV Park is located at 5130 Torch Lake Road, 1½ miles south of Conover. The campground/ RV park oﬀers 21 campsites, with the Campground Host occupying one site. Each guest site includes water & electrical hook-up, a fire ring with adjustable cooking grate, and a picnic table. Free wi-fi is available. There is one comfort station building and a dump station. There is one dedicated ADA guest site within feet of the comfort station, this ADA compliant guest site includes an elevated fire ring with adjustable cooking grate. This Campground/RV Park has direct access to the Vilas County ATV trail system and is a short walk from Torch Lake Park & Beach.

River Road Equestrian Campground

This campground is located at 5065 River Road oﬀ US Highway 45, south of Conover. Camping is by permit only (on-site self-registration) and limited to 10 consecutive days. Sites are $10.00 per night. There are six primitive campsites around a large common area. The center common area has 2 picnic tables and a large fire ring/grill. The campsites accommodate equestrian trailers. There is a pump for fresh water and one toilet building (ADA compliant) located at this campground, as well as a manure bunker/pad for your 4-legged friends. The campground accesses the Equestrian Trail system.

Rummels Road Camping

This campground is located on the east bank of the Wisconsin River just south of Rummels Road which is approximately 2½ miles north of Conover oﬀ US Highway 45. The campground is for primitive camping, and includes a free-standing cooking grill, a fire ring with attached grill, a picnic table, latrine and a small shelter. There is no motor vehicle parking at this campground. This campground is walk-in or boat access only. This campground is just a few miles south of the world-famous Headwaters of the Wisconsin River at Lac Vieux Desert Lake, where the County also maintains an historical marker, scenic park and picnic area. A self-registration station is located on premises. A camping permit of $5.00/night is required. Camping is limited to 10 consecutive days per site. Iron County Winter Blast is a well-rounded party MERCER -- The Mercer Sno-Goers Snowmobile Club will host their annual Winter Blast celebration on Saturday, Jan. 19 at the snowmobile barn in Mercer. The snow-filled, family-friendly event is open to the public; you don’t have to be a snowmobiler to join in the fun.

The club’s poker run starts Dec. 14 and ends Jan. 19 with the drawing at the Winter Blast party. Poker run sheets can be picked up at local businesses.

Glacial activity created great scenery ANTIGO – The Yukon Territory Loop with its many steep hills and sharp turns will challenge even veteran cross country skiers traveling to the Jack Lake Area Cross-county Ski Trail in Langlade County. But Yukon Territory is only one of several loops contained within the 15-mile trail that carves its way through hardwoods and aspen woods of this county forest. Options exist for those less skilled or those with children. The trail is courtesy of Langlade County Forestry & Recreation Department; the beautiful scenery is the result of glacial activity thousands of years ago. The trail system accommodates all skiing abilities and ages. For instance, the Green Thump Loop is a beginner’s loop with only a few gentle hills. Other loops fall between Yukon and Green Thump in difficulty. The groomed and tracked trail offers eight loops of both traditional and skating style skiing. It passes through pine and spruce forests as well as bogs and other wetlands. Glacial features of the area include terminal moraines and drumlins. Parking is off Highway J where the Green Thumb Loop begins. A donation box is also located here. Donations help offset the costs grooming, tracking and equipment purchase. Restrooms and adjacent shelter are located midway through the network of loops. The Outside Passage Loop crosses a snowmobile trail twice so caution is advised.

Just a mile south of the X-C ski trail system is Veterans Memorial Park where the Jack Lake Trails can be found. The trails are a favorite of snowshoers and hikers. The trail meanders along three underdeveloped glacier lakes, wetlands and bogs as well as northern hardwood, aspen and conifer forest types. Directions: Approximately 12 miles north of Antigo on Hwy. 45, then east on County J for 2 miles to the Junction of Pence Lake Road and the road to Veterans Memorial Park. Other ski trails in the county are Kettlebowl Ski Hill, Gartzke Flowage, and Moccasin Lake Road ski trail. For more information call the Forestry & Rec Department at 715-627-6300. MERRILL – If someone mentions sled dog racing, you’re likely to think of Alaska’s great Iditarod race. But you can experience a version of this popular spectator sport in Merrill during that community’s Winterfest celebration Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 26-27.

4-, 6-, and 10-dog, 1- and 2-dog skijoring races (pulling a cross-country skier), as well as kiddie and celebrity races. Spectator admission is free. But leave your personal dog at home as it can be a distraction to the sled dogs.

Other happenings

If you love dogs – and these four-legged athletes really do love racing – than you’re in luck with the Merrill Winterfest sled dog races, put on by the Wisconsin Trailblazers Sled Dog Club. More than 100 mushers compete in the International Sled Dog Racing Association-sanctioned races, which feature a cash purse and trophies for the top six places.

Winterfest also includes other events, including a co-ed volleyball tournament at Kate Goodrich School, with start time 8am Saturday and ice drags also Saturday at nearby Council Ground State Park. Past Winterfest events have included an ice sculpturing contest, open ice-skating at the Smith Center, cardboard sled races and kids coloring contest.

Steeped in tradition and heritage, the sprint races are held at the Pine River Elementary School, W4165 Hwy. 64. Races begin at 10am Saturday and 9am Sunday. There will be 3-dog junior,

Ice Drag Racers compete

MERRILL – The Merrill Ice Draggers invite the public to witness dragsters, muscle cars and trucks blaze down the eighth-mile strip of ice on Lake Alexander during the 2019 World Championship Ice Drags held at Council Grounds State Park. Track speeds for many can reach 100 mph in less than seven seconds on the 660-foot course. Keith Krueger set the course record in a bottle-fed supercharged dragster in the Outlaw class at 5.431 ET and 141.6 mph! The series features single elimination in 15 divisions, including 4-wheel drive classes and 2-wheel drive classes for cars, trucks and dragsters. Vehicle registration is from 9-11am with racing underway at noon. Get a preview of the action on Saturday, Jan. 19, which is the “test & tune” day for racers and their support teams. The winter weekend warriors have four official race dates.

‘The 525’ features championship oval racing in Wausau WAUSAU – Many of the nation’s top pro and semi-pro snowmobile racers will descend on Wausau for the 15th annual Wausau 525 Snowmobile Championship on Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 26-27. They will return for another USSA-sanctioned “525” Double Header race on Feb. 23-24 at the Wausau track. The “525” is part of United States Snowmobile Association (USSA) Pro Star Cup Tour, which is a nine race series. The “525” honors the memory of Philip “Flip” Merwin (#525) who lost his life in a snowmobile racing accident in 2003. Fund raised from the events help local non-profit groups and individuals.

About the January races In addition to the drivers and their extremely fast sleds racing on the third-mile banked ice oval, there will be vendor expo areas, popular local teams and special motorsports features all weekend on both race dates.

Gates open at 8am on both days for spectators. There is a gate admission fee, but kids ages 12 and under get in free. There’s also free spectator parking, along with food and beverages and warming areas.

Saturday’s schedule for the January race also includes the youth snowmobile races sanctioned by Wisconsin Kids Snowmobile Racing Association (WKSRA) and Wisconsin Kitty Cat Racers (WKCR), and on Sunday the Badger State Games youth snowmobiling races will join the action. Inside the heated exhibition building fans will find all the amenities: food, beverages and spectator seating. There is a heated bathroom facility and plenty of parking on site. Fans can also snowmobile to the track via the county snowmobile trails. Snowmobile parking and a helmet check are available and those arriving by snowmobile receive a $2 discount on admission. Oneida County Lights of the Northwoods to shine even brighter

RHINELANDER -- The “Lights of the Northwoods” show premiered for the first time last year in Rhinelander’s Hodag Park. And you said “Wow!” This year, you may have to put “Wow” in all caps, as the organizers are promising to make the second year even bigger and brighter than before. The lights and grand displays will be visible from Dec. 14-23, with community events set for Dec. 14-16 and Dec. 21-23.You can either drive or walk through the park. The show is free to enter, but food and money donations are encouraged. Last year’s event had hundreds of people show up to view the various displays. “We set a very lofty goal and it was a very bold goal to put 50,000 lights in the park,” said event president Shawn Will. “This year with the added interest from the community, we’ve actually set our goal to more than double that.

Oneida County 40 Come out for ‘Fatbikes by Candlelight’ MINOCQUA – If you got a fat bike for Christmas (you were extra nice this year, right?), bring it out to the Northwoods Zip Line Trail in Minocqua on Wednesday, Dec. 26 for an evening of trail riding, fat bike demos, a roaring bonfire and hot drinks. Sponsored by the Lakeland Area Mountain Bike Organization (LAMBO) the “Fatbikes by Candlelight” event starts at 5pm. Admission is free. The event is billed as family-friendly, so it’ll be a fun opportunity to introduce the kids to fat biking. Or, maybe it’ll be mom’s and dad’s turn. The trail is located just south of the Island of Minocqua (look for the Zip Line sign). The 3.5-mile trail is groomed for winter fat biking, so you can bring your fat bike out anytime. Considered fast and accessible for riders, the trail was developed with support from the Northwoods Zip Line folks, the town of Minocqua (which owns the property) and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.

Discover the RASTA winter trails RHINELANDER AREA -- Rhinelander Area Silent Trail Association (RASTA) builds and maintains trails in the Rhinelander area for mountain biking, hiking, snowshoeing, skiing and fat biking. Here’s a look at their three cross-country ski trails and one fat bike trail: Cassian Ski – 9 miles in length in each direction, and as its name implies the trail is located in the Town of Cassian. The Cassian Trail is also located on gentle rolling terrain, and is designed to accommodate users with a wide range of skills. The Cassian Trail is groomed for traditional tracked skiing. Nose Lake Ski – located in the Town of Woodboro and offers 7 miles of trail groomed for traditional tracked skiing. The gentle topography makes this system very popular with skiers possessing either a beginner or intermediate skill set. Another popular feature of the Nose Lake Trail is that dogs are permitted. Washburn Ski – the largest and most popular of the three ski trails, is located adjacent to Perch Lake Park in the Town of Woodboro. The Washburn Ski Trail is 12 miles long, offering 4 miles of trail groomed for tracked skiing, and 8 miles of trail groomed for ski skating. As a result of the hilly topography found throughout the Washburn Lake Area, these trails are best suited for skiers possessing an intermediate to advanced skill set. Enterprise Fat Bike – The Enterprise Winter Silent Sports Trail is located 8 miles south on Hwy G. Watch for Oneida County signs. The trailhead is on Zimmer Road. The trail is groomed for fat-tire biking, and has different ability levels. The trail has both an 8-mile loop and a shorter cut off loop about 2-3 miles. Dogs are permitted on this trail, but they must be under voice control at all times.

The other exhibit, “Out My Window” is by Colleen Ansbaugh. A nationally recognized fiber artist, she was most recently featured in “Quilt National 2017: The Best of Contemporary Quilts.” The Out My Window series is a colorful travelogue of what she saw out the car window on her journeys through Up North Wisconsin.

Winterfest fun arrives in full force PHILLIPS – The 2019 Winterfest celebration in Phillips on Friday-Sunday, Jan. 25-27 offers a lot of see and to participate in for all ages and skill levels, says the Phillips Chamber of Commerce. Sleigh rides on a winter’s night PRESQUE ISLE – The Presque isle Chamber of Commerce invites you and your family to enjoy a horse-drawn sleigh ride on Friday, Dec. 14 during the community’s Olde Tyme Community Christmas observance. The free sleigh rides will be available from 6-9pm and leaving every half hour from Pipke Park. ‘Marvel in Manitowish Waters’ promises fun for all MANITOWISH WATERS – Finding family-friendly events and activities during the holiday season (Dec. 26-31) is a snap if you visit the town of Manitowish Waters during that chamber of commerce’s annual “Marvel in Manitowish Waters” celebration. No worries if you splurged the household budget on Christmas gifts as “Marvel” activities are either free or low cost. Some are being held indoors so no problems either with bitter cold if it happens.

Winter Family Play Day The North Lakeland Discovery Center will host a number of free drop-in activities on Thursday, Dec. 27 (Winter Family Play Day) that are fun for all family members. Join in for winter scavenger hunts, snow critter building, crafts and horse-drawn sleigh rides. The center is also hosting a chili cook-off from 11am to 1pm. A chili lunch is available for a small fee. Enjoy snowshoeing at Camp Jorn and North Lakeland Discovery Center, and multi-day open house with crafts at Koller Library. Vilas County Fast times at St. Germain Radar Run

at noon, the immensely popular Bikini Run at 1pm, and the Snow Outlaw Winter Nationals finale at 2pm. Expect additional drag racing all day Saturday and into the night as well as the top drag racers compete for over $14,000 in purse money. On the shaved ice track, the fastest speed run on Saturday wins a $500 cash purse. Top speed run also wins recognition on the Sno-King traveling trophy on display at the Snowmobile Hall of Fame in St. Germain. There’s a new $500 cash purse for a new track record currently set at 173.1 mph. Trophies and prizes will be awarded at the Whitetail Inn at 5pm Saturday. ST. GERMAIN – Northern Wisconsin’s premier lake ice event, the St. Germain Radar Run, returns to St. Germain on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 1 & 2 with fast sleds, the famed Bikini Racers, food and refreshments – and a new event!

“Freezin’ for a Reason” -- A Pink Carpet Gala will be Saturday, Jan. 19 at the Whitetail Inn. It’s an elegant evening of appetizers, music, raffles and silent auctions to benefit Pink Ribbon Riders and local Bikini Run contestants. Come and “Dress to Impress!”

The event draws thousands of spectators as they watch snowmobiles dash down the two tracks on the West Bay of Little St. Germain Lake -- “The largest winter speed run event in Wisconsin!” The radar runs take place on the 660-foot packed and groomed snow track, and the speed runs take place on the 1,000-foot shaved ice track. Drag racing in 3 classes takes place all day Friday and Saturday. There is spectator parking with bus shuttles on land. There is parking on the ice (at your own risk) for vehicles and trailers. Both days, there will be music and large heated beer tents with hot food provided by the Bo-Boen Snowmobile Club. A “vendors row” with snowmobile related gear is also planned. New this year are added heated tents for vendors plus a concierge tent hosted by Boondock Nation, Clutch Energy Drinks and Snow Outlaws. Friday’s events start at noon and they go until 8pm. In addition to the radar runs, practice speed runs and spectator dag races, there will be “Friday Night Under the Lights” racing from 5-8pm and the Snow Outlaw drag racing at 6pm. New drag racing classes have been added in addition to the Snow Outlaw races with over 125 new racers expected filling 3 new venues. Snow outlaw class, open mod, and lake racer. The Arctic Warrior 5K/10K Snowshoe Race will wind through the beautiful trails in St. Germain and alongside the obstacle course race. The Arctic Warrior Obstacle Course Challenge is a team event so round up friends and family members (suggested team size is 2-6). The race course winds around Little St. Germain Lake and through trails of towering pines that will challenge you though variety of adventure obstacles including, fire walking, tire shuffle, snowmobile pull, dumpster dive, snow hill climb, slack line challenge, snow tunnel crawl and a snowball target launch. The Most Spirited Arctic Warrior Team will be recognized at 3:30pm at the Wild Bear Grill & Pub. Each registered racers will receive a finisher buff and free bowl of soup at the finish. In addition, the snowshoe racers get a long sleeve t-shirt and the obstacles racers get a long sleeve ¼ zip t-shirt.

EAGLE RIVER – Catch all the excitement – the thrills, the spills, the favorites and perhaps championships upsets – at the World Championship Derby Complex featuring today’s high-tech sleds and vintage iron during back-to-back weekends of racing in January 2019. The Derby has new owners and a new name, with exciting news to share as they plan events throughout the entire year at the iconic Eagle River facility, known far and wide as the “Indianapolis 500 of Snowmobile Racing.” The two events in January draw tens of thousands of snowmobilers from all over North America. The racers themselves will compete in junior, amateur, semipro and professional divisions on the oval track and on the sno-cross course. The Eagle River track will first host the Vintage World Championship Snowmobile Derby the weekend of Jan. 11-13. Come for a whole weekend of classic racing and remember the “good old days” of snowmobile racing. Snowmobiles from 1985 and earlier racing are eligible for vintage racing. Watching vintage racing is like stepping back in time … you will see Ski-Doo, Moto-Ski, Arctic Cat, Polaris, Yamaha, Skiroule, Rupp, Mercury, Sno-Jet, John Deere and Chaparral snowmobiles, amongst many other brands. There will be racing on the half-mile banked ice track as well as in sno-cross competition. The Vintage champion is crowned after that Sunday’s final race at 3:15pm. The following weekend, Jan. 17-20, is the 56th annual World Championship Snowmobile Derby featur-

ing over hundreds of professional and amateur racers in the largest and most prestigious snowmobile competition in the sport. Many of the drivers race sleds at speeds over 100 miles per hour on a solid ice oval, and for the high-flying pilots it’s through a demanding sno-cross course. Lots of vertical excitement for the fans! Don’t miss Friday Night Thunder under the lights where the competition for the Sweet Sixteen pole position race takes on the world famous ice oval to see which World Champ driver will sit on the pole at 3pm Sunday in the Pro 440 class finale. They go head-tohead, bar-to-bar for 30 laps of non-stop action! The winner will be crowned the 2019 World Champion. And returning this year for Friday Night Thunder, you will be able to see the Pro sno-cross racers compete for prize money and trophies. Also, the Pink Ribbon Riders will compete in the ”Dash for Cash” with a two-lap race in their bikinis around the sno-cross course. Then, “Screaming Eagle Saturday” will show off the best of the sno-cross racers when they “Jump for Dollars” on the famed “Table Top” sno-cross track. Lantern-lit skiing and snowshoeing offered SILVER CITY -- Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park, located on the south shore of Lake Superior near Silver City in Ontonagon County, is offering cross-country skiing and snowshoeing by lantern light in late December, and on Saturday evenings in January and February.

Iron County’s Groomed Trails - Your Gateway to the Western U.P. -- Iron County boasts more than 260 miles of extensively groomed and well-marked snowmobile trails, drawing riders from throughout the region and beyond to enjoy scenic journeys that are a trademark of trails here. The wide open trails traverse abandoned railroad beds, weave through varied wooded terrain and cross lakes for excellent sledding. Snowfall totals are between 90 and 120 inches each season. The season opens Dec. 1 and closes March 31. The county trail system includes Amasa, Crystal Falls, Iron River, Sidnaw and Kenton areas. The Iron Range Trail Club (906-265-7152) maintains and grooms about 150 miles of trail. Additionally, the Chippewa Snokats Snowmobile Club (906- 875-3117) grooms and maintains about 100 miles of trail. Iron County serves as a hub for not only local trails, but far beyond. If you’re more of a nordic skier that enjoys the trails cut through the wilderness, then you’ll love our diverse cross country ski trails. You can choose the sequestered Lake Mary Plains Pathways in Mansfield Township. One of the local favorites is the Ge-Che Cross-Country Trail. This trail system weaves around three lakes: Hagerman, Brule and Ottawa through the U.S. Forest Service’s Ottawa National Forest in southwest Iron County. Ge-Che (“Big Lake” in Ojibwe) was named for Lake Ottawa. The trail totals nine miles over gentle and rolling terrain and connects Lake Ottawa with Hagerman Lake across the road.
